00:00It seems as though the smile on craig mish's face is a little bit wider
00:04On this tuesday morning our mlb insider and the host of newswire which starts at 11 a.m
00:10Eastern time joins us here on the early line craig
00:14Let's just call a spade a spade, right?
00:15You've been a little bit skeptical of the new york yankees reaching the ultimate mountaintop of mlb
00:21This season and now down in an o3 hole
00:24You seem to have been correct. We will get your assessment on this fall classic and what if anything
00:31Lays ahead or lies ahead after game number four if there even is a game five
00:37Here on this tuesday on the early line. We appreciate your time
00:41Of course and look I for one
00:44Would always prefer a long series regardless of who wins or loses
00:49But I don't think there's any question
00:51That it's extremely doubtful that we're going to get a long one here in the world series
00:55Yeah, it really is based on track record history
00:59And of course the dodgers holding a 3-0 series advantage
01:02Could this be the last time that we round every single base during the mlb season?
01:08If it is it was fun. It's time for the daily basis
01:12Craig
01:17There is
01:18Got to involve joe lisi one last time if it is in fact the final time craig
01:23Let's go back to game three the dodgers win four to two freddie freeman yet again
01:28The hero a two-run home run in the top of the first walker buehler has been absolute nails since the second inning of game
01:36three of the nlds
01:37Against san diego. He has pitched 12 innings of shut out baseball
01:43But craig with what you saw in game three, was it indicative?
01:47Did it represent what you thought could be the key differences here in this world series between la and new york?
01:54Yeah, I give the yankees a lot of credit, you know all season long. I thought they were, you know, pretty fraudulent
02:00a couple of really good pitchers
02:02couple of really good hitters
02:04Uh, you know made the jazz trade to sort of ignite the clubhouse which it did for a while
02:10But if you watch the yankees this season
02:13What you're seeing right now is indicative of what we saw at least twice probably three times
02:19And by the way last year too where there were these pockets of times
02:24Where they just really struggled to score runs. I guess the only difference is
02:28Is that when that happened judge was hitting at that time and I think it's exacerbated now because he's not hitting and it's happening too
02:35Judge hit all season long
02:37So what's happened now is you're seeing what happened in early april and then in june and then in july and then now it's happening again
02:44Where they've just been an all or nothing team offensively. There were some signs of this against cleveland. You remember cleveland
02:51Was probably the least opportunistic team to play against them in the postseason
02:55They had the bases loaded several times one out yankees kept getting out if you play those games over and over I think cleveland
03:02Uh has a better result, but I give the yankees credit for getting this far. I think it's a flawed team ben
03:07And in in order to change things up, they're gonna have to add some offensive pieces this offseason to avoid this all or nothing result
03:17Okay, I gotta I gotta ask you because I
03:19Find people are still scratching their head
03:21How good could g and carlos stanton have been overall if he had stayed healthy throughout his career?
03:28Because does this shock you at all?
03:30Like he is the best hitter that the yankees have right now him and soto without them forget it
03:35This is where they wouldn't even gotten here. But why does he in your opinion show up in?
03:42October when other guys can't for some reason
03:45Yeah, I mean look joe it's a fair point to ask but I think it's a really
03:50Easy question that you're asking me to answer
03:53Which is he is just like a lot of other players with that
03:58I mean, maybe there aren't exactly like that body type joe
04:01But you know the best example that I could give you is and again steroids aside
04:05You could ask me if jose canseco
04:07Wasn't on steroids and wasn't hurt like 80 percent of the time for the last 10 years of his career. What would he be?
04:14uh players like this with that big body type joe the legs just go man like they go a few years in
04:21And after stanton won the mvp and he got traded from the marlins to the yankees. It was a really steep decline
04:27He's always had that power. He continues to have that power
04:30But you saw last night can't even run really anymore from third to home
04:34So I think that through history, you know, eric davis is another great name
04:38He played for the reds for a long time once the legs start to go and those big muscular body types start to fail
04:45It's over quickly. They have a really short shelf life
04:48Most of them stanton is really an outlier joe to be honest with you
04:52Like he's had probably better a career than I thought he was going to have especially if you look back the last few years
04:56with all the injuries
04:58Has been clutch in this postseason no doubt for the yankees when they have been devoid of much offense outside of giancarlo
05:05And juan soto so greg game number four
05:09Is tonight the dodgers are a slight money line underdog against the yankees?
05:14No starter named or opener named just yet for la on the other side
05:19It will be louise heel getting a start for new york
05:23You look at game four you look at the series odds overall
05:26It's probably not a question of if rather just when do the dodgers sweep the yankees in the 2024 world series?
05:35Or will we at least see a fifth game?
05:38I don't think so. I I think it ends tonight. I I think that in sports in general
05:43There's you know
05:44Always the saying if you're not sure just let the trend be your friend and the trend is the yankees aren't hitting
05:50The dodgers are doesn't matter who the dodgers pitch. They're getting the yankees out bullpen guy bueller gratterall doesn't matter
05:58Uh, if the yankees were to wake up tonight ben as an example and score six runs
06:02I could see a path to getting to six games
06:05But what have you seen?
06:08In the first three games beyond game one with nesta cortez needing it out
06:13What have you seen from the yankees that leads you to believe that all of a sudden tonight is going to be the night?
06:18I I don't see it
06:20So I I think it does end
06:23And uh, and again great season for the yankees too. I have absolutely nothing negative to say. It's just at some point
06:29They're going to have to get I mean it's not that they need more players
06:33Like jazz like i'm not saying that but more players to get on base and when the big home run hitters don't hit
06:39Score some runs. Otherwise, they just don't have a lot of those guys
06:42So craig when it goes final we'll celebrate the dodgers
06:45But I just want to ask this as a quick follow-up if it is an embarrassment in the world series
06:51And certainly on track for that there will be some in the bronx
06:55Looking for something new will there be changes to the yankees organization this offseason?
07:00I don't think so. I I think that you celebrate winning a pennant and getting to the world series
07:04You've seen changes with a lot of the teams that did not qualify for the world series across the board
07:09But me personally I say no I say the yankees run back
07:13And then the juan soto sweeps the hicks begin this winter craig mesh. We appreciate it
07:19We'll have more of the early lineup now
07:21Game number four of the world series tonight in the bronx. Can the yankees stave off elimination?
07:28Avoiding a sweep and force at least a game five
07:32Or will the dodgers win championship number eight in its franchise history?
07:37With a clean sweep of the yankees and only four games in the 2024
07:42World series here are where the odds stand at this moment
07:47The yankees a home favorite tonight inside yankee stadium louise heel gets the start for new york still tvd for the dodgers
07:54We expect an opener we'll dive into the potential names in just a second eight and a half
08:00Is the total based on regulation joe all three of our games have stayed under this number?
08:07It was freddie freeman's walk off grand slam
08:10In the home half of the 10th on friday night in game number one that pushed us to the over of eight
08:16And a half but joe, it's a very simple question. Really will the yankees get swept or avoid the sweep tonight in game number four?
08:25I don't know but it feels to me like forget the side
08:30It feels like the the total is the way to go in this game here. Uh
08:35You know, but they've scored seven runs the yankees in these three games, right?
08:39Uh, the dodgers have only scored 14 and four of those came on you mentioned it the freeman grand slam there
08:46Uh in the extra inning, so it's not like with all the studs and firepower we got in these lineups
08:53That's not a whole lot of runs here, uh ben at all
08:56And we're still hovering around what eight and a half and if you're figuring the yankees are not going to figure it out tonight
09:02against the bullpen
09:03Uh because they haven't figured it out in the first three games
09:05Then how in the world are we getting nine runs in this game the yankees? It's going to be all hands on deck
09:11Uh regardless because this is the series so they're in must win
09:16I it just feels like the under no matter what is going to be the way to go
09:20Because even if the yankees are to win
09:23They're going to have to hold the dodgers lineup and keep these guys off the base pass
09:28They're going to have to limit the runs here regardless. So I think the under is the way to look in this one
09:33Yeah, and listen it will be a bullpen game for the dodgers
09:37We have seen them do that various times in this postseason
09:40In pretty critical moments, of course
09:42You first look at what they did in game number four in san diego against the padres when everybody thought uh-oh
09:49This dodgers team is in danger of getting bounced in the ds
09:52Once again for the third time in the last six years by san diego dave roberts turns to ryan brazier to open things up
10:00He uses eight arms and the dodgers of course
10:03Blank the padres win game four win game five and now here we are into the world series with la just one win away
10:11from its eighth ever
10:13World series championship, of course, there is the sweeping
10:17Precedent here in the world series
10:19This will be the 23rd time in a best of seven world series a team has taken a 3-0 series advantage in the prior
10:2722
10:283-0 series leads in the fall classic
10:3119 have ended in a sweep only three have even reached a fifth game
10:37Never have we gone past game number five
10:41In fact the last time even a 3-0 series lead happened that extended to a fifth game the 1970
10:49World series nine times since it's been a clean sweep. Have the yankees ever been swept in the world series?
10:57Yes, three times way back in 1922
11:011963 against these dodgers in 76
11:05Against the cincinnati reds, so we're not entirely sure yet
11:09Joe who is going to open the game for the dodgers michael kopech was in there at the end
11:15Of game number three gave up the two-run shot to alex verdugo in the home half of the ninth ryan brazier
11:22Through a full inning. He has often been the guy to open for la
11:26We do know who is starting for new york
11:29It's the rookie in a very significant spot trying to keep his club's season alive
11:35That is luis our guy don't call him. You know what he'll on the hill tonight inside yankee stadium
11:41Joe, he did start game number four of the alcs against the guardian against the guardians was fine
11:47Four innings of work only three base knocks two
11:51Earned runs, what can we expect out of heel in the biggest spot of his young career tonight against los angeles?
11:59But you know you mentioned that start against the guardians ben. That's his only starts in september 28th
12:04So it's he's he's pitched once in a month
12:07and
12:08That is not great. He's only got really three pitches here and we have a dodgers team
12:16That is not chasing anything
12:18Uh, they're walking a ton in this series
12:22They're not striking out unlike the yankees who have struck out 31 times in this three-game series here the dodgers
12:29Not so much. They're gonna take a ton of pitches here
12:32They're gonna make this kid work and that was that would be what scares me the most
12:37So I don't know what his walks prop is
12:39But I guarantee you louis. He'll probably going over
12:43Uh his walk prop here tonight given the fact that the dodgers
12:47Are not going to chase bad pitches and make his life easy
12:50So I would expect maybe a few more walks than usual here for uh for the rookie
12:57Yeah, so I don't see a walk prop out on fan duel
13:00Just the strikeout prop, of course for louise
13:03He'll part of that could be because the dodgers have not named their starter their opener tonight
13:08Hasn't released all of that not even an outs prop yet for louis hill in this game
13:13He is walk prone. You saw some of the numbers that he had made out his rookie season in the
13:19Opening game of his playoff career against the guardians in game four
13:24He did register three walks. That was really the issue joe last night for clark schmidt
13:30He walked four. He only gave up two base knocks, but he allowed three
13:34Earn runs part of that was the two-run shot to the third batter of the game frederick freddie freeman
13:40Who is now in a home run in five consecutive world series games all three here in the 2024 fall classic
13:48the final two
13:49Of the 2021 world series as in atlanta brave
13:53against the houston
13:55Astros, so joe, let's look at the offensive side of the scope for this game
14:01The dodgers
14:02Have really been pretty solid throughout the entirety of this postseason
14:06One through nine in one's a little bit banged up. That's joe
14:10Hey, otani mookie betts has been consistent freddie freeman has been the main spark plug
14:15Tommy edmund has been good mookie bets and kike hernandez both in rbi
14:21Last night in regulation
14:23If you were to tell most yankees fans that in the opening three games of this world series the yanks have only allowed 10
14:29Runs you'd be like, all right, pretty cool. It's just the yankees haven't done much offensively on the other side
14:37Let's start with the dodgers
14:38Joe, who is the biggest key offensively once again if la is going to win a world series and a clean sweep in game
14:45number four tonight
14:47Well, you're gonna have to figure out ways, uh
14:50To keep the top half of that order off the base because the bottom half of that order for the dodgers
14:55Ben has come through with some big hits at big moments in this series, uh so far so
15:02Uh, they can't make a difference if they don't get on base
15:05So I I do think you got to stop letting freeman beat you
15:10Uh at some point in this series, you got to stop that. I don't think otani
15:15Well, we know he's not 100 and those swings he took last night were not great at all
15:20So I don't think he's going to be as big a factor. I do think it's going to be the
15:25The guys in the bottom half of this order
15:28Don't put them in a spot to get singles and uh and drive in runs
15:33Make sure that the top half of the order
15:35Sits down here tonight and is not running on the bases, which means you better not be giving them free passes
15:42Which I think maybe would be a huge ask out of this, uh staff of the yankees
15:47Shohei otani is just one for eleven in this world series with two runs scored and one extra base hit
15:54He has drawn two walks. He's been pretty disciplined only three strikeouts
15:58But but again, it's not like this is the otherworldly nl mvp winning shohei otani that is now banged up
16:05It's really been everybody else. It's been freddie freeman
16:08It's been mookie bats kike hernandez has continued to put up prolific production in the postseason
16:13Tommy edmund had a home run in game number two
16:17He was the nlcs mvp and there is no doubt
16:20Joe, one of the best advantages for the dodgers throughout this postseason
16:24Certainly here in the world series against new york has been that depth because the yankees ain't got it
16:30Not even close. So outside of soto and stanton. Will somebody step up?
16:35Will a judge rise tonight with the yankees season on the line?
16:39We'll talk about it next game number four
16:42Will the world series end in a sweep or might we even see a fifth game in the bronx?
16:49Tomorrow joe tonight in game number four
16:51We talked about it louise heel gets the start for the yankees
16:54We expect an opener and a bullpen game
16:57For the dodgers who exactly that first pitcher on the mound tonight in the bronx is going to be
17:03Has not been listed by dave roberts as of yet again
17:06We'll remind you of the history of a team holding a 3-0 series lead in the world series
17:12In the very very very very very very very very uphill battle the yankees have to climb to even see a fifth game joe
17:19Let alone a sixth game, which has never happened in the history of the world series when a team has been down. Oh three
17:27But if they're going to start to climb up the hill, they need their best players to perform in a big way
17:33Jim, garland stanton has done that one soto pretty darn good as well
17:39Aaron judge has been absolutely awful. He is one of 12 here in this world series
17:45He has seven strikeouts aaron judge in this postseason is six of 43. That's a 140 batting average
17:52He has two home runs in six rbis all of that offensive production coming in the first three games
17:58That's it of the alcs
18:00Against the guardians and yet joe the odds makers give aaron judge the most likely chance to hit one over the wall
18:07Tonight it's plus two
18:1050 i'm not going to ask you if it's worth cashing that ticket what I will ask you is this
18:15What do the yankees finally need out of aaron judge if they're going to stave off elimination and avoid the sweep tonight in game four?
18:23It was funny. We were just talking I said the best thing to happen tonight
18:27But the yankees is aaron judge gets up there in the first inning and breaks a bat and bloops a single over the first baseman's head
18:34Uh, you've got he's got to get
18:37Some confidence he's got to be able to breathe here
18:41And the only way he's going to be able to breathe and at home is ben is getting a hit
18:45It doesn't need to be a home run. It doesn't need to be a mammoth show
18:49He just needs a hit and the longer it takes for him to get that
18:54The worse it's going to get for him because mentally I think it's starting to wear on him
18:59We're talking about a dude with over 250 postseason at bats. He's barely hitting a buck 50
19:04I I mean it's embarrassing on so many levels for him and they're on the verge of being swept. So any sort of
19:12Hit I think in the first inning will give judge credit. Don't expect a home run. Do not expect a home run
19:19He looks lost man. Flaherty had his number big time in game one. I'm like, oh boy
19:24This could be tough and he has not shown any sort of resilience here in either game two
19:30Or three stanton has been that guy
19:33For new york six playoff home runs all six coming in clutch moments in the sixth inning or later last night
19:39It was alex verdugo delivering a two-run shot to bring even a sliver of life and optimism to yankee stadium
19:47Of course, we know frederick freeman freddie freeman's price to hit a home run tonight something he has done in five
19:54consecutive world series games including all three and somehow joe, it's six to one
20:00I would think it'd be a little bit shorter on freddie freeman not saying he's going to make it four in a row
20:05Here in the world series with a long ball, but I thought the odds makers would have adjusted ever so slightly
20:11I I the only two guys. Yeah, you would think uh, but the only two guys
20:16I would even look at from a yankee perspective would be soto and stanton
20:20Uh with both those guys having the short porches and an opportunity
20:24It's the only guys we can trust to put the bat on the ball here in any way shape or form
20:29I don't think otani's shoulder is good enough. Uh one way or the other
20:33Uh, but you know the one guy that maybe we have not heard, uh from here is maybe mookie betts
20:39We're not giving him enough, uh credit here to be able to uh, park one at a pretty good price
20:45In rbi last night for the dodgers that extended the lead early kike hernandez
20:50The only guy for la that had multiple base knocks last night
20:54The dodgers had just five hits the yankees had the same amount of base hits
20:58The dodgers actually stranded a ton more offense in the third and fourth innings
21:03Yeah, we'll remember gene carlos stanton's early rounding third and getting housed at home
21:08But still the dodgers had gavin lux do the same on a bunt from tommy edmund that quickly went home
21:14And he was ruled out on a play at the plate. Nestor cortez came in the inning later got out of a jam
21:21The dodgers actually left a ton more offense out there in game number three
21:26But they will not be complaining as la holds a 3-0 series advantage
21:31Here is where the odds makers have adjusted the price on freddie freeman joe
21:35He's going to win world series mvp and absolutely deservingly. So because he's minus 1900
21:42minus 1900 right now
21:44You can take a flyer on stanton or soto if you think the yankees pull off the improbable something
21:49We have only seen once ever in the history of mlb best of seven series and the yankees know that all
21:55To well, I guess maybe you could take a flyer on another dodger
21:59Perhaps if this gets extended to six or seven and the dodgers still end up on the winning end
22:06Don't see that happening. And here is why I do not see that happening. Joe again
22:10This is the 23rd time in a best of seven world series one team has held a 3-0 series advantage in the previous 22
22:1919
22:20Have ended in a sweep only three have even ever made it to a fifth game
22:26Never have we seen a team hold a 3-0 series advantage and even have to play a sixth let alone
22:34seventh game
22:35So joe, it's a question of not if
22:38But when and i'm really starting to feel like it's tonight. I know the yankees have the hope
22:43I know the yankees are the favorites. I don't think there's really anything they do better than la at this moment
22:49So i'll give the edge the dodgers even in a bullpen game
22:53It's I mean listen the the options even for the bullpen are not great
22:57for the dodgers here tonight in a closeout game, but
23:01When you're up three nothing ben you give yourself a whole lot of room for error
23:05Don't you and given the fact that uh, we've just not seen any signs of life
23:10From anybody not named soto or stanton in this lineup. It's very hard to look towards the yankees
23:16But you know, it is yankee stadium. It is october. This is where legends are made. I can tell you this if if
23:24Judge does finally break out tonight
23:27Uh that nobody in new york will remember that he was batting 120 heading into this game, but
23:34Until the end of the world series if they do fall in five
23:38But to joe's point we're gonna have plenty of time throughout the rest of the week to talk about the overall season
23:44Outlook in review the dodgers expected to win a world series with everybody they invested in this offseason
23:51Their one win away from doing just that the yankees fall short
23:54But at least they have won the pennant for the first time in 15 years. We'll talk about the season overall at a later date
