00:00The wet weather across northern parts continues as we go into the weekend.
00:04Hello, thank you for joining me for your latest weather update from the Met Office.
00:08At the moment we have high pressure building across southern areas, which is why the weather
00:12is going to turn increasingly settled here.
00:14But for more northern parts it's a messy wet picture for many, low pressure in the frontal
00:19system as we go through Thursday, bringing some heavy rain across northern areas.
00:23You can see across Scotland, northern England and northern parts of Wales into the Midlands
00:28there will be outbreaks of rain, and some totals could build up particularly over Cumbria,
00:32perhaps as we go through Thursday we could see around 80mm, but because it's coming over
00:37quite a long period we're not expecting any major impacts.
00:40A drier picture across northern Ireland as we go through into the afternoon, and also
00:44drier for many central southern parts of England and Wales, perhaps some bright sunny spells
00:48developing, though it is going to be quite cloudy.
00:50And because of the cloud, temperatures not rising particularly high, near normal for
00:54the time of year, highs around 18-19 celsius in the south, cooler than this further north
00:59and feeling markedly cooler in the cloud, the wind and the rain.
01:03As we go through the end of the day on Thursday we're going to see most of that rain across
01:07northern areas clearing away for a time, though notice it will affect Orkney and Shetland
01:11as we go through the night.
01:13Then there will be a quieter spell before more rain pushes its way in across parts of
01:17northern Ireland, southern Scotland, northern England and perhaps northern parts of Wales
01:21as we go through the early hours of Friday morning.
01:24For many it is going to be a breezy night and a cloudy one too, so I'm not expecting
01:28temperatures to drop much, in fact across parts of northern UK temperatures will only
01:32drop a degree or so compared to the daytime highs.
01:35So it is going to be a mild and breezy and perhaps damp start on Friday morning for some
01:40of us, particularly damp across northern areas, again some heavy rain likely across parts
01:45of northwest England, southern Scotland, into north Wales and across northern Ireland it
01:49is going to be a fairly wet day as we go through Friday.
01:53Also a spell of rain affecting again Orkney and Shetland, but in between these two zones,
01:57notice across parts of Scotland there could be some dry and for eastern parts of Scotland
02:02some sunny weather to be had, although it is looking quite blustery, particularly towards
02:05the coasts.
02:07Also some decent dry sunny weather across more central southern parts of England and
02:10Wales and here with some warm air being dragged up from the south we're likely to see temperatures
02:15rising to around 22 or 23 Celsius and even further north temperatures do look like they'll
02:21be a touch higher than on Thursday.
02:23Later on Friday we're going to see more wet weather pushing its way in from the west affecting
02:27particularly western parts of Scotland as we go through Friday night.
02:31This is due to a front that's going through something called frontogenesis, so it's going
02:35to become more active, it's going to invigorate and that means we are going to see some heavy
02:39rain as we go through this weekend, we are likely to see totals really building up as
02:43we go through Saturday into Sunday especially across western parts of Scotland.
02:48We are likely to see some localised flooding, there could be some disruption to travel as
02:51well so do take care if you're in this neck of the woods.
02:54But that whole front does push its way northwards and that does two things, it allows the more
02:58settled weather in the south to become more widespread as we go through the weekend and
03:03we're going to drag in some warm air from the south.
03:05As a result temperatures on Sunday could reach highs of around 26 or 27 Celsius which is
03:11unusually warm for the time of year.
03:14Aidan will have more information on the weekend forecast in our weekend weather video which
03:18is available on our YouTube channel later this afternoon, otherwise you can keep up
03:22to date across our social media.
