06 January - National weather forecast presented by Alex Deakin

00:00Hello. Much of the country had a dry Friday, but don't expect that to continue this weekend.
00:07Further heavy showers to come across all areas thanks to low pressure. Now, on Friday we
00:12were kind of between two weather systems, but that's changing. These weather fronts
00:16are bringing in cloud and outbreaks of rain from the west, many places becoming soggy
00:21by Saturday morning. Gusty winds as well accompanying this rain, which will be particularly heavy
00:26for parts of Wales and southwest England, with saturated ground here that could cause
00:31some problems. So we do have a couple of Met Office yellow weather warnings in place. Eastern
00:36England may not see that rain until the middle of Saturday morning, and it should be clearing
00:40from Northern Ireland. As it does, temperatures dipping down into single figures, but for
00:45most places, temperatures actually rising through the night. And these are the numbers
00:49as we start the weekend. A mild start then, but a soggy Saturday morning, some heavy bursts
00:55of rain still, particularly for Wales and southwest England. It is all moving eastwards,
01:00so that rain arriving across East Anglia and the southeast where it'll linger maybe for
01:04most of the day. And that rain could continue on the east coast of Scotland until quite
01:08late in the afternoon too. Following on, it'll turn drier and brighter for a time, but also
01:14following on, plenty of showers zipping along on increasingly gusty winds. That wind will
01:21also bring a fresher feel. Temperatures actually dropping again through the day, so through
01:27the afternoon, many places in single figures. And feeling cooler, certainly when the showers
01:31come along, and because of that wind, which will continue to strengthen. It's going to
01:35be a very gusty night, Saturday night, across the northwest of Scotland. Severe gales likely
01:41to develop here, and the gusty winds elsewhere will continue to throw showers in from the
01:46west. So be prepared for that if you're heading out on Saturday night. And be prepared for
01:50showers on Sunday as well, because that's how it's looking. Showers across most areas,
01:55particularly for Wales and southern England, where for some it'll be a very wet day. Maybe
01:58not too many for northeast England in the morning. Parts of northeast Scotland and southern
02:02Scotland may not see too many showers either, so much of Sunday could be dry. And elsewhere,
02:08there'll be gaps between the showers. It will at times brighten up with some sunshine. But
02:12as I say, the showers never too far away. Still a blustery day. The winds may ease a
02:16touch come the afternoon. But gusty conditions, and that will make it feel cooler. Certainly
02:22that it has done for most of this year. These temperatures are actually pretty close to
02:25the average for the time of year, but lower than they have been. Add on that wind, it
02:29will feel a good deal fresher, I suspect. And that's not the end of the wet and the
02:33windy weather either, because the outlook even into next week is dominated by low pressure
02:38systems. Warm clears away during Sunday night, and we may get a brief dry spell from a bit
02:44of a ridge across the south on Monday. But here comes another set of weather fronts and
02:48then waiting in the wings after that. Plenty more areas of low pressure that are all heading
02:53towards the UK from the west. The Atlantic will continue to dominate our weather for
02:59much of next week, with more wet and windy weather to come. To keep up to date with the
