08th March - Scotland weather forecast for Sunday afternoon presented by Luke Miall
Transcript
00:00Hello, and welcome to your Scotland forecast brought to you by the Met Office. We saw some
00:05fairly heavy rain through Saturday and Saturday night, but today we've got a mixture of sunny
00:10skies and some scattered heavy showers, some of them quite blustery at times and it is
00:15feeling on the cool side out there. Let's take a look at the picture through this afternoon.
00:20We've got the best of the sunshine across more southern parts of Scotland through the
00:24day. We'll see fewer showers here and we'll see some sunshine breaking through across
00:28the northeast as well. But otherwise, it's a fair mixture of sunshine and heavy showers.
00:33Some of those showers could give some hail, mixture of the odd rumble of thunder and some
00:37sleet and snow up over the highest tops of the mountains through central Scotland. So
00:41here it will be a wintry flavour to our weather. All of us feeling fairly cool, though southwesterly
00:47winds just taking the edge off those temperatures coming in in the high single figures at the
00:52very best. Don't take the graphics too literally because almost anywhere could see some showers
00:57through the evening. But generally, western areas will start to see them becoming more
01:01focused and eastern areas will turn drier and we may just start to see a few running
01:05into Dumfries and Galloway by the end of the night. Otherwise, with clearer skies across
01:10eastern areas, it is set to turn colder. Temperatures dipping low enough for a touch of ice, especially
01:15where we've seen showers through the day and there could be some frost around first thing
01:19as well. Elsewhere, temperatures holding up, especially where we see those showers continuing
01:24throughout the night. But overall, not a bad start to Monday morning, a cold one for
01:27some of us, but bright for many. A few showers continuing to just move across southern Scotland,
01:31but most of them will fade away. So we will see a period where most places are dry and
01:36will keep hold will hold on to the dry and bright weather across eastern areas through
01:41much of the day. But it's out towards the west where we start to see the next weather
01:44front coming in, and that's going to bring some heavy rain, strong southerly winds, quite
01:48a gloomy afternoon to come here with that rain really setting its way in, preceded by
01:53some hill snow over the highest ground as well. Keep a few showers in the far north
01:57of Scotland, but as I say, things are generally better across the east of the country through
02:03the afternoon. As we go through the evening then, we continue to see that rain pushing
02:07across hill snow across the highest routes, but that generally turns back to rain as the
02:12night goes on and the winds begin to ease down. But we keep a lot of cloud, we keep
02:16a lot of rain across the south, really only clearer skies start to develop in towards
02:21the northwest as we go through the overnight period. So we keep with the unsettled weather
02:25as we look ahead in towards Tuesday. More in the way of showers I think by then, and
02:30across the far north of Scotland it will stay on the chilly side. But elsewhere, temperatures
02:34getting into double figures, so where we do see any sunshine, feeling a little bit more
02:38like spring. But again, with those heavy showers pushing through, we will see further heavy
02:43rain and also the risk of hail at times too. Things then are set to turn a bit colder as
02:48we look ahead towards midweek onwards, the risk of some winteriness to those showers
02:52returning across much of the country. Marco will be back later on with an update for you.
