00:00So, up until about a week ago, originally, we would have been here on this Monday to start off a new week and we would have said the Major League Baseball regular season is over. Day off today to set the stage for the opening of the wild card round tomorrow. All four sets. The best of three to begin the expanded Major League Baseball playoffs about to begin. But of course, we had the rain out in the postponement based on the effects of Hurricane Helene in Atlanta.
00:27So, the Braves and Mets scheduled for a doubleheader. Would it even be necessary? It, in fact, is. We will get to the National League playoff picture. What is at stake? What remains? The outcomes and the clinching scenarios on this Monday.
00:42For DRS, the American League is set. Here is the postseason picture in the AL. The Guardians only played 161 because they could not catch the Yankees. New York will be the top overall seed in the American League playoff picture.
00:57Cleveland also that opening round by. The Astros clinching the American League West about a week and a half ago. The Orioles sweeping the Twins to end out this weekend. Despite Baltimore not really needing the series, they a large cushion for that top overall wild card.
01:13And because of the Twins slide to end out the year and the hot play out of Detroit, it's going to be the Royals and the Tigers in the final two American League wild card spots. Detroit did drop its final two games of the year after beating the White Sox on Friday to make history in Major League Baseball. The White Sox now officially the worst team we have ever seen in the modern era.
01:37We've seen 121 L's. That the most we have ever seen since the year 1900. So a little bit of reshuffling in terms of the AL Central teams into the postseason, but that's how it looks in the American League.
01:50Yeah, it's some fun. It's fun to get new teams in, right? We didn't anticipate the Tigers making it in like to see that same thing with the Kansas City Royals played well down the stretch or should I say almost the opposite? Detroit was awesome down the stretch in Kansas City sort of backed away, but they still found their way in and that's the thought process around 162 game season.
02:05There's games that you win early and middle of the season count just the same as those wins or losses late in September. So they got in the interesting parts going to be game number one Houston and Detroit probably going to be frame Revaldez taking on Tarek Scoble like the total that game is what three and a half for that game.
02:20That's going to be crazy to watch you play out and that's yeah, that's the one scenario that I look at and say to myself like the Tigers aren't a great baseball team, but they do have the best pitcher in baseball in the short series.
02:32And if you Houston like come on like I understand the Royals are quite we couldn't get the Royals in this spot here. So that's going to be a series to watch right off the bat. But also keep in mind the Dodgers are the number one overall seed in baseball. The Philadelphia Phillies are the two seed here.
02:44So I was watching that over the weekend to see if the Yankees might be able to claim or even the Guardians who got that game rained out. So looking longer down the line, it'll be interesting how it plays out, but we always thought at least I thought the Yankees would be that top overall seed in the American League and they did get that.
02:58Yeah, they did absolutely get that they will enter this October as the American League pennant favorites. Of course, the Yanks have failed to win a pennant since their last American League pennant in their last World Series crown back in 2009.
03:12The Astros who will host the Tigers and Tarek Skoobel in this best of three wildcard set have reached the American League Championship Series each of the past seven years. The Guardians though have that second best price with the opening round by and DRS.
03:28We are about to have the conversation based on the results now in the expanded postseason. This is the third year of the expanded playoffs and the additional wildcard team in MLB rest versus rust opening round buys wildcard teams needing to win game after game after game down the home stretch of the regular season.
03:48Can they carry the momentum now into the playoffs six and a half by the way, the total for tomorrow's opener in H-Town between Frambois Valdez and Tarek Skoobel the Astros minus 178 to win the set. We will preview all of those games tomorrow. So now to the National League where things are still interesting. The Dodgers are the number one seed.
04:10They had the best record in baseball best record in the NL over the Phil's despite Philadelphia having the season series advantage only 10 cents though DRS separate these two teams to win a National League pennant. The Brewers also winning the National League Central not the opening round by finishing two games behind Philadelphia plus 950.
04:32We do not know necessarily the wildcard spot. San Diego will be the top team. They have already quenched that playoff berth. Here is what is at stake in the doubleheader today in Atlanta. It's the Braves and the Mets for to the winner of game one will already guarantee their playoff berth. If the two teams split the two National League East teams, New York and Atlanta into the postseason.
04:59If the Mets sweep, it's the Mets in the Diamondbacks on the opposite side. If the Braves sweep both of the two games today at home in the a it's Atlanta and Arizona DRS still something to be determined on now the final day of this Major League Baseball regular season.
05:18Yeah, Diamondbacks did this to themselves here. Oh, it's unfair. Like no, you had 162 games to try to settle this and you pull into this tie. So you look at the doubleheader. It's the worst case scenario for the Diamondbacks because you look at so I guess a team theoretically could sweep but if one team wins game number one, whether it be the Mets of Atlanta Braves there, they have to play somebody they're going to pitch their worst pitcher and their worst bullpen efforts and their worst lineup.
05:41You can possibly have on that active roster going up against another team. That's going to be pressed up against it. Like I believe let's just say it's the Atlanta Braves. I think Schwellenbach is going to start game number one here. They lose that, you know, they go to Chris Sale in game number two against probably a Mets tomato can where they're going all in to win it.
05:57It's a tough scene here overall for the Diamondbacks is they're not going to get in but that's the fruits of the labor over 162 where you left yourself to be watching a doubleheader to see how you can get in but also keep in mind it is sort of unfair and I thought Major League Baseball played this terrible last week because you probably could have squeezed some of those games and knowing the weather was there change maybe a location or two moved up a game and maybe didn't need this but I think most of us were cheering on outside of Braves fans and Mets fans that we wanted to see a doubleheader on Monday just because the intrigue but also keep in mind you play a doubleheader.
06:27Today and get on a plane. You are playing in the next city tomorrow night back in playoff mode. So it is a distinct disadvantage for both of these teams. But once again, you'd rather get in then knock it in. I think both of these teams will be taking flights out tonight and both of those guys will be in the playoffs not actually having a flight home like the Mets like a seasons over where we get in those tee times at for sure.
06:49Listen, you're rolling right? We know what 162 is in MLB. It's not unheard of like it might be in the NFL or even the NBA or the NHL to play back-to-back nights to start off the postseason now for Arizona just want to say this they lost five of the last seven games.
07:03They won 11 to yesterday to even stay in playoff contention to avoid a sweep against a Padres team that watched the Dodgers clinch the NL West against them before entering this weekend. Arizona looks firmly at themselves. They were 26 and 8 following the all-star break until August 25th.
07:21They were the hottest team in baseball. But from that point DRS from August 25th on they were 75 and 56 at that moment. They were 14 and 18 or 14 and 17 down the stretch. They had a losing record in the final month plus of this MLB regular season now to the games today.
07:43Arizona is desperate for a team to win both in the Atlanta Braves are at least favored to win game one. No game two odds out just yet. We're not sure who the starters are going to be Spencer Schwellenbach gets the start for Atlanta the Braves greater than a dollar and a half favorite at home against the New York Mets and Tyler McGill gets the start for the Amazons.
08:06I'll just say this about Schwellenbach, of course out of Nebraska. So I like the kid his first six starts or his first. Yeah, six starts in the June at the end of June. He was one in four with a 568 era. He actually won the opener against the Mets on Tuesday night. The Braves victorious 5 to 1 Schwellenbach is what his last three starts. He was one in four with a 561 era at the end of June from that point.
08:32He's now eight and seven with a 347 era. He gets a huge honor to start today against McGill and the Mets at home.
08:42Yeah, by the way, both of these pictures in pretty good form. You look at that last 60 days been you look at Schwellenbach a 3.29 X fit, but also Tyler McGill 3.40. Here's the interesting part of course people that like to bet Major League Baseball going to watch this game and bet accordingly.
08:57It's very hard to predict even on a total. The reason I say this are you throwing your best bullpen guys you game number one band when you're down four to two in the seventh inning like let's honestly think about that like the chances of coming back would be slim in a regular season game.
09:11You absolutely would do that. But are you going to use your high leverage guys knowing that you probably need in the game number two. It's a wild atmosphere really is the final final day of the MLB regular season.
09:22We will play 162 in Atlanta. In fact, not just 162 but 161 and 162 between the Braves and the Mets. Here is what is at stake today in the doubleheader in the ATL.
09:39If the Braves sweep, it will be the Braves and the Diamondbacks making the postseason. If the Mets sweep, it will be the Mets and the Diamondbacks making the postseason.
09:47If they split, it will be both of the National League East mates, the Mets and the Braves making it to the postseason. DRS you seem pretty convinced the most likely scenario is a split today and it kind of tracks because the winner of the opening game clinches that playoff berth.
10:06Do they take their foot off the gas for game number two? Do they not care? Will they already be starting their preparation for the opening game of their wildcard round in the postseason which is not later this week but tomorrow in whatever city they have to travel to.
10:23So again, do you think the most likely scenario is both the Braves and the Mets into the postseason after a split today in Atlanta?
10:31With ease, like with ease. I don't think the Diamondbacks in that minus 300 price, let's just say yes or no to make the playoffs here. That no is an absolute great bet here. I don't want to pay that many dues.
10:41Think of how this plays out. The reason why in Major League Baseball, Ben, you have a ghost runner in extra innings is because you don't want to have games turn into doubleheaders here which could blow up your entire bullpen for the next week and a half and burn your next day starter in the meanwhile.
10:56You're trying to get those games over sooner. So, well, Donnie, why would you equate that to the games today? Think about this. If Major League Baseball had its way and the Diamondbacks said this is how it should be fair, both teams should try their best in this doubleheader regardless of the outcome, which is not the case.
11:10So if you are the Mets and you win game number one, you're not going to throw the starter that you would throw basically in game number one of your wildcard series.
11:17And then also if you had your close your closeout game number one in a three to two game closeout game number two, therefore saying, well, he can't pitch the next three days, which means you would burn two playoff games.
11:26That's not happening here. The team that's going to win game number one is basically going to forfeit game number two. Yes, you still have professional players out there, but your top five guys in your one through nine will not play.
11:36Your worst starting pitcher is going to pitch. Your lowest level bullpen guys are going to pitch against the other team, throwing the kitchen sink at that game, just the need to win that to get to the postseason.
11:49So from a Diamondbacks perspective, it should be minus a thousand for them to make the playoffs because I just can't see a sweep in this doubleheader. It just doesn't make sense for either team to do this.
11:59Forget about, oh, there's a game out there. We play to win. No, you don't. You play to win game number one, game number two. You're already on your plane, making reservations to get to your next city.
12:09It is a good point, DRS. And yes, this is a divisional duel. There is bad blood between Atlanta and New York.
12:16Oh, what great joy it would be to keep this team out of the postseason with an upset victory in game two.
12:23The realistic potential of that when your outlook is going to be on the playoffs is very, very different and not just your outlook, but your managerial decisions, not the guys in the offensive lineup, but who's going to start.
12:36How many bullpen arms are you going to throw? Because again, you don't have two, three days off to figure it all out.
12:42You are playing tomorrow in a game that will have playoff implications to start out a best of three wild card set.
12:51So DRS, then how do we even handicap game 161? The Braves will throw out Spencer Schwellenbach.
12:58They're greater than a dollar and a half favorite at home, minus 152, the updated number on FanDuel.
13:04For the Amazons, it's going to be Tyler McGill. We talked about Schwellenbach throughout this season.
13:09For six starts of his rookie campaign through the end of June, he had a one and four record with a 5-6-1 ERA.
13:15Entering today, he actually won the opener of this three-game set against the Mets last Tuesday.
13:23That ERA is sub-3-5 now. He has been so much better, an 8-7 record.
13:29How do you handicap game 1 and 161 between Atlanta and New York?
13:34Hard, because typically during a regular season, because I consider this a playoff game, regular season, where are the angles that we like to pursue, Ben?
13:41Bad pitchers over the past 60 days really struggling. You don't get that.
13:43Schwellenbach's got an ERA of 2.90 over the past 60 days. Tyler McGill, 1.98.
13:49Here's the question, Ben. Forget about handicapping game number 1.
13:52What's the handicap on game number 2 at this? Because what is that line going to be?
13:56Let's just say that Atlanta loses game number 1.
13:59Sale takes the mound against just a complete buffoon bullpen effort here for the Mets.
14:04Honestly, is that minus 400 or higher? Something that we usually don't see?
14:09Is it minus 500 or higher?
14:10Because I don't think we've ever seen one team throwing a baseball game versus the best pitcher in the National League.
14:17That's going to be interesting to watch. And look, I want to see it play out that way.
14:20I want to see what that game number 2 line is going to be.
14:23The odds makers have no clue. We're not entirely sure who is going to start in either of the scenarios.
14:29We would expect to see sale if the Braves lose.
14:32What do the Mets do? Luis Severino, quote, in play. A lot unknown.
