00:00live right here on the early line October baseball continues at least for
00:08one more day in the wild card round on this Thursday one of our four wild card
00:14sets yet to be determined tonight in Milwaukee the best two words you could
00:18hope for in the wild card round game three Brewers Mets Craig Mish is here to
00:24preview that game to tell you how the series will end out to look back on what
00:29we have seen so far through the opening round of the MLB postseason all of that
00:34our MLB insider the host of Newswire which starts at 11 a.m. Eastern Time
00:39each and every weekday here on the spiz Grizz Craig as always we appreciate the
00:44time thanks for being here yeah of course yeah I mean I was hoping for more
00:48than one game three but I guess Ben beggars can't be choosers the last two
00:52years have been none right so let's get it going tonight we have at least one to
00:58be determined and we'll look back on everything that has happened so far in
01:02the wild-card round you heard the crowd enthusiasm before the break let's touch
01:07them all it's time for the daily basis
01:14all right Craig let's look back on the National League wild-card series that
01:18has been determined in only two games the Padres sweep the Braves San Diego
01:23was a hefty favorite entering the set Atlanta shorthanded no Chris Sale in
01:28this series the story of the year for the Braves with all of their injury
01:32issues it got a little dicey last night Robert Suarez comes in and shuts it down
01:37for San Diego the Padres advance to the NLDS 5 to 4 the victory Craig what was
01:43your main takeaway from this National League wild-card set between Atlanta and
01:47San Diego yeah I think Ben coming in the Braves were in the worst position of any
01:52team entering the postseason once Chris Sale was out I think the writing was on
01:57the wall whether they lost in San Diego in two or in three they were not meant
02:02to move on they had way too many injuries every team has them I
02:05understand it's not an excuse but the bottom line is is they didn't have their
02:10best pitcher they didn't have their best hitter they didn't have their second
02:14best pitcher and when I say second best you can pick it is it Strider is it sale
02:17I don't know they didn't have either so credit to the Braves for the season that
02:22they had and getting themselves in on that last extra day of the season but
02:27very clearly they were outmatched by the Padres they fought them last night
02:31they'll be back next season Ben make no mistake about it yeah it's up breaks for
02:36the Braves all the way through it's just amazing that they actually did make the
02:38playoffs and you can say the same thing for the Houston Astros we have an
02:41expectation of them being dominant in the playoffs but just getting there at
02:4512 games under 500 heading into the summer seemed like that was gonna be a
02:48long shot they made it there they didn't perform all that great against the
02:51Detroit Tigers had an unbelievable bullpen day yesterday and then off of
02:55the school will start the day before but if you look at that graphic on the
02:58screen since 2017 it was a rite of passage you at least made the ALCS they
03:03didn't do that this year so that streak has been snap Craig and also what's the
03:07future for the Houston Astros yeah there's a couple of factors in here for
03:12Houston I think the first thing is is that all of these years of them
03:16cultivating and bringing up young talent development through the minor leagues I
03:20think we're coming to an end there so I'm not really sure how they're gonna be
03:23able to pick up the pieces you know Verlander is no longer who he was he
03:27said he's gonna continue to pitch next season I don't think it'll be with
03:29Houston Alex Bregman said goodbye Alvarez was hurt Tucker missed most of
03:34the season you know Altuve is not 28 anymore it's a good question Donnie I'm
03:38not really sure which direction the Astros are going to go and on the flip
03:43side of this though I think you know it's fair to say I I don't I don't think
03:46I fired right on any of these games in the postseason but the one thing that I
03:49will say is that a month ago you know we were all laughing when I said just
03:53take the Tigers to go all the way because you know honestly like the team
03:57that gets hot right now is is really all that matters no indictment on Houston
04:01whatsoever we've seen this happen time and time again in the postseason the
04:04teams that are hot at the end of the year advance it's a tournament just like
04:08basketball at this point whoever gets hot in March moves forward whoever gets
04:11hot in September moves on in October Detroit was 55 and 63 on August 10th
04:18eight games below 500 they have won 33 of their last 46 and their first
04:23playoff series win since 2013 but Craig for most of this year once Houston
04:29started to figure it out midway through June and into July it was the Yankees
04:33the Orioles and the Astros all tightly compact at the top of the AL pennant
04:38odds well Houston and Baltimore have been set packing after only two games
04:44the Guardians earn that other opening round by as the to seed in the American
04:49League Craig I'm going to make you talk about what are the teams that you don't
04:53like to discuss that's the number one seed in the AL the New York Yankees now
04:57an even money plus 100 favorite to win the American League pennant something
05:03the Yanks have failed to do since their last World Series crown in 2000 and 9
05:09how does the pathway out now for the Bronx bombers to actually get back to
05:13the World Series most pressure they've had I would say going into this thing
05:18then as of as of right now I mean no disrespect to any of those teams in the
05:23American League Central that remain and I don't think the Yankees have to win
05:27the World Series fellas but if they don't get there there's going to be
05:32carnage man there really is I mean they should be able to go through Cleveland
05:38and win this thing if Cleveland ends up being the last team standing with New
05:42York but you know for me at this point I think it is fair to say the Yankees
05:46are the best team in the American League they've got the rest there's nothing
05:50more to say if they go down I would expect some massive changes in New York
05:55there's really no excuse for them at this point but to win the World Series
05:57you never know that's a lot to ask guys but I'll just say the American League
06:01carnage in New York for one side of the Yankees could it be carnage in New York
06:05for team number two that's in New York Mets as the underdogs tonight at a minus
06:09130 price favorite tonight for the Brewers in a total of seven and a half
06:12Craig who advances the face the Philadelphia Phillies this should be a
06:17good one if the narrative presses on then it's the Mets right like that's
06:21kind of the way that this postseason has gone you just take the underdog and go
06:24about your business I think the Mets will go to Milwaukee and win I do I do I
06:29think that's probably the right play you know all these teams that have been at
06:33home and have been favorites they've really shown nothing and you know
06:36especially guys the Orioles of all teams not scoring run that's the way
06:40they go down we spent a year talking about how the Orioles didn't get enough
06:42pitching to move on yeah what they didn't get enough hitting all of a
06:46sudden I'll tell you October baseball man it is so unpredictable but I'll roll
06:50the dice with the Mets Craig some questions for the O's for sure and
06:55Orioles offense that recorded one run and 11 hits and two playoff games this
07:01week against the Royals Craig mish as always we appreciate the time we'll see
07:05you next week as the division series will already be underway we'll see on
07:10newswire as well 11 a.m. Eastern Time in just about 40 minutes the baseball
07:14breakdowns continue game three tonight in Milwaukee next winner take all game
07:19three in the only wild-card series yet to be determined tonight in Milwaukee
07:25it's the Brewers and the Mets in the decisive game that will determine who
07:30heads to the NLDS to take on the Philadelphia Phillies with red October
07:35soon to begin in the city of brotherly love DRS in all three games the Milwaukee
07:40Brewers have been booked as a favorite the Mets won outright in game number one
07:44eight to four the brew crew came back last night to catch that favorite price
07:48at minus 118 again I will stress the Amazons enter game two with the upsetting
07:55game number one needing just one more win to advance to the NLDS as a minus
08:00320 series favorite hope you bet the Brewers there because you would have had
08:04a wonderful middling opportunity or cash out option because Milwaukee is
08:10the home favorite tonight for game number three Tobias Myers gets the start
08:15for the brew crew he's been pretty solid in the month of September Jose Quintana
08:20gets the start on the other side for the Amazons that line is not what it is now
08:26as the market is working in favor of Milwaukee minus 130 in favor of the
08:31Brewers total is seven and a half how does Donnie right side handicap game
08:36number three tonight in Milwaukee first I would have to say is I would had no
08:40hedging opportunities tonight Ben because I would have thought the Mets
08:43would have won yesterday and never would have met the Brewers and the reason why
08:45we talked about or teased it throughout the show is the Mets chance to shut the
08:49door on this series was yesterday the better pitcher on the mound the hotter
08:53team and you also had a three-to-one lead you let that slip away which now
08:56flips over to today and also you start with that seven and a half I'm going
08:59under in this game I'm gonna explain why then we'll get to the side
09:02perspective Jose Quintana last 30 days in Major League Baseball 92 batters he's
09:06faced having an 035 ISO power number and a weighted on base percentage of 202
09:10that's absolutely fantastic let's go to the opposite side and go last 30 days
09:14for Tobias Myers he has a 105 ISO and a 278 weighted on base percentage that is
09:19fantastic as well so right off the bat you're getting two pitchers in decent
09:23form but you know me I like to look at analytical numbers and take that 60-day
09:27outlook of how these guys have been pitching not just say like oh you had a
09:30good starter to down the stretch if we go back 60 days
09:34Jose Quintana 57 innings pitch a 3.47 ERA which is actually good but take a
09:40look at his X FIP number 4.49 that's in the danger territory conversely here
09:45Tobias Myers 56 and two-thirds innings pitched over the past 60 days a 2.86 ERA
09:51and an X FIP of 3.87 so yesterday I thought the better pitcher was on the
09:56mound for the New York Mets that's not the case tonight the better pitchers on
09:59the mound here fill the Milwaukee Brewers if we're looking from plate
10:02appearances right-handed batter excuse me right into pitchers against that Mets
10:06lineup over the past 30 days Lindor, Vientos, Nimmo, Alonzo the usual
10:11suspects are the guys that you want to be leaning on but also if you're
10:14flipping it over to the other side and saying okay Jose Quintana left-handed
10:17pitcher what shakes out here for the Brewers Contreras, Sanchez, Hoskins,
10:23Freilich and Ortiz decent options but having said that last night I love the
10:27Mets bats cashed a parlay by the second inning it was fantastic I don't have
10:31that same love for this game tonight because you need participants what I
10:34mean by that is I need to see that offense which can hit left-handed
10:37pitching or right-handed pitching whatever it might be right but also I
10:41need those pitchers to help me out and if we're getting ISO power numbers you
10:44know at 035 like Quintana that doesn't bowl on also handicapping in a game
10:50number three is extremely hard why because we don't know how long these
10:53pitchers are gonna go in a perfect world they both go shut out through eight
10:56innings you let the bullpen and the ninth inning and extra innings and bail
10:59you out that's not the case you might have a pitcher Ben that doesn't give up
11:03a hit through four innings what's the first two runners on in that next inning
11:07where he's only at 46 pitches he's removed from that ballgame because if
11:11you lose there is no tomorrow so good luck on this game tonight I think it
11:14stays under and I think the Brewers win but from a prop perspective I'm
11:18I'm steering clear this one Ben the 26 year old Tobias Myers in his first year
11:23fully up in the bigs nine and six with a three era as you saw he picked up his
11:29ninth win of the year in his last start of the regular season Saturday against
11:33who these Mets Milwaukee one two of three in their final regular season set
11:38against the Amazons hoping to do the same tonight and Donnie you mentioned
11:42how much the bullpen is going to factor into this game you almost get that
11:46picture-perfect recipe for Pat Murphy tonight from Myers last start against
11:50New York on Saturday four innings of work shut out baseball allowing just one
11:54hit in five case that would be more than they could hope for tonight in Wisconsin
11:59Jose Quintana the veteran as compared to the 26 year old Myers but only two
12:05stints in the postseason with Chicago the Cubs in 2017 the Cardinals back three
12:10years ago in 2022 he has appeared in five postseason games he has made four
12:16playoff starts he has an 0-1 record 18 and two-thirds innings of work what a
12:24game we have tonight to decide the final spot in the division series and in that
12:29round the winner heads to Philadelphia on Saturday
