00:00It's the Daily Bases.
00:09Seventh straight Craig Mish for the New York Mets in the hunt
00:13for that third and final National League wildcard spot.
00:16The Braves are playing the Rockies. So bad news for New
00:19York. Atlanta has won both of the first two games of that set
00:22still a half game deficit for the Amazons to make up but they
00:26are doing all they can. Seven consecutive victories for the
00:29Mets. What has spurned on this late charge out of New York?
00:34Yeah, the stars are shining for them. Pete Alonso and more
00:37importantly Francisco Lindor. I mean those have been two big
00:40reasons. The pitching has been good. They're finally being able
00:43to close out some games. Although the bullpen has been
00:45shaky all season long, but you know, it's sort of incredible
00:48to think that a year ago the Mets said goodbye to Scherzer
00:51and Verlander and Robertson and Canha and all these other
00:54players and they're much better this year without them. I don't
00:56know what that speaks to but look, they're playing very good
00:59baseball at the moment. I think they're going to fight this
01:01thing all the way right down to the end. Guys, this is like a
01:04horse race that's coming down the stretch with them and the
01:06Braves and it's just kind of like too close to call at the
01:08moment. So I feel like, you know, my best advice would be
01:11to sit back and enjoy this thing and see who ends up winning
01:14because for me, it's just flip that coin right now. They're
01:16both playing good baseball. I don't know. Yeah, camaraderie
01:20there for the Mets. Certainly there and also with the Atlanta
01:23Braves trying to stay just ahead of the Mets, the Philadelphia
01:25Phillies back to winning, the NLEs playing great baseball at
01:28the top of it. If we go to the West Coast here, I thought it
01:30was interesting yesterday. The San Diego Padres, obviously one
01:33of the better teams in baseball and ultra talented. Hugh Darvish
01:36returns back to the mound and I was saying to myself, Greg,
01:38what happens if Hugh Darvish gets back to what he has been
01:40doing over, let's just say, the past decade and what boost that
01:43could be for the San Diego Padres? Not the case, though,
01:46in that first game back. Two and two thirds innings pitched,
01:48four hits, three earned runs, four strikeouts and a home run
01:51given up in this game. What did we see how to do, Hugh Darvish
01:54and also, Craig, what are the expectations for us for Hugh
01:56Darvish in the month of September? I mean, Musgrove
01:59pitched very well his last time out, Donnie. I think that's
02:02more important than Hugh Darvish. I mean, Hugh Darvish has been
02:05gone a while. I believe he's on the restricted list. Didn't see
02:08a lot of reporting on that either. So I'm not really sure
02:11exactly what's going on there. And so I'm not surprised to see
02:13these initial results. He's had really good regular season
02:17success. I'm not sure about his postseason success. So look, I
02:21think they would like to get him going. If I'm sort of
02:24predicting, Donnie, what would happen in a three-game wildcard
02:28series, maybe he'd pitch game three. I don't think he'd pitch
02:31game one or game two. He could be their third or fourth
02:33starter in a seven-game series. So the Padres will hope, but I
02:37think we got to call it what it is at this point. They've
02:39gotten this far kind of without him. So they're just hoping
02:42that they could get anything, I think, to get him into the
02:45postseason and pitching well. I wouldn't say that he's a
02:47candidate to not be on the postseason roster just yet.
02:50But he's going to have to pitch well the last month to be on
02:53it. Jackson Merrill, a three-run home run to bring San
02:57Diego back to start their comeback against the Tigers
03:00yesterday. Fernando Tatis walking it off for the Padres
03:03at home in extra innings. Yu Darvish's first start since the
03:07end of May. We expect to see Yoshi Yamamoto for the L.A.
03:11Dodgers on Tuesday, at least next week at some point for the
03:14first time since the middle of June. Despite how hot the
03:18D-backs and the Padres have been, Craig, since the All-Star
03:21break, the Dodgers have been keeping pace, a four-and-a-half
03:24game lead in the National League West, because they are
03:26getting healthy at the right time. What will the addition of
03:29Yamamoto do for the Dodgers' World Series outlook?
03:33Yeah, I mean, this is really big to get him back and, Ben,
03:36maybe for him to make a five-inning start, a six-inning
03:39start, and then maybe one more before the postseason begins
03:42because you know he's going to be in that rotation down the
03:44stretch. But you said it right. I think the Dodgers have played
03:47themselves through the first half of the season, showcasing
03:50everybody that they had. Everybody's playing, but at
03:52different times, players have been out. You know, Mookie Betts
03:55missed a long period of time during the season. They're going
03:57to get right at the right time, and anything less than getting
04:01to the World Series for the Dodgers is a failure. So this
04:03will be a big help for them. We'll see if they get there.
04:06Afternoon baseball, Craig. I guess you have two games in the
04:081 o'clock hour. The one full focus on here is the Houston
04:10Astros taking on the Cincinnati Reds, Brown versus Louder.
04:13Heavy favorite on the road for the Astros at a minus-162
04:16price and a total that is listed at 9. Any thoughts tonight?
04:19Houston and Cincinnati? Well, I do have some thoughts, and this
04:24will be important for us to have this conversation next year
04:27when I'm throwing out these season win totals and we're going
04:30over this stuff. Let's not forget what happens over the course
04:34of the season. And I'm more focused on that. I'm already
04:37looking toward next year with this stuff. So, and you know,
04:39we're going to hit the two totals we gave out the beginning
04:41of the year. Guys, the Reds are 12 and 26 in one-run games
04:46this season. They played a lot of close games and they lost
04:49almost them all. Two different opinions. Number one, I don't
04:53ever give this kind of play out usually on the show. I don't
04:56think I've done it once all season long, but I probably
04:58would play the Reds plus a run and a half because they're
05:00playing so many one-run games and losing. So we don't care
05:03if they win or lose. We just care if they fall within a run.
05:06And then the second thing is we got to keep a close eye on
05:08that Reds win total next season because that 12 and 26
05:11could be 26 and 12 next season. One-run games are impossible
05:15to predict on a year-by-year basis. It is probably the
05:18luckiest stat in all of baseball. It just shows that one
05:22year you were lucky and one year you were not. Believe me,
05:25the Reds will have a much better record in one-run games
05:27next season. We're going to keep an eye on that going into
05:29next year. There has been some promise in Cincinnati last year
05:34the late charge to try to get back in the NL wildcard chase
05:37this year. I'll be at six games below 500, but they want
05:40three straight looking for the sweep of the great American
05:43ballpark against the Astros this week. All right, Craig
05:47Mish debut of the NFL season tonight in Arrowhead. Chiefs
05:51a three-point favorite against the Ravens 46 and a half the
05:54total. What's your early lean? Early lean on all of the NFL
05:59games this week is overs on first halves. I think the
06:04kickoff rule is going to play a big factor in the first half
06:08of NFL games. I'm going to take the over in the first half of
06:12the Chiefs Ravens 23, 22 and a half depending on where you can
06:16get it. I think it'll normalize over the course of the season,
06:19but points are going to go up by two or three this year with
06:21the kickoff rule. I think the first half is the first place
06:24to look. Craig's normally an under guy too and over out of
06:28Craig Mish. We're on the early line next. Only a nine game
06:32slate in Major League Baseball on this Thursday, probably
06:35understanding that the National Football League is the focus
06:38today and of those nine games for the nine in the afternoon
06:42hours in their respective ballparks. We start in San
06:46Francisco. It's the Giants and the Diamondbacks San Francisco
06:49looking to avoid a sweep against Arizona booked as
06:52nearly a dollar and a half favorite at home. Blake Snell
06:55gets the start against Merrill Kelly seven and a half is the
06:59total slightly on its way up. The D-backs have won both of
07:03the first two games of this set yesterday. Zach Allen no hit
07:07baseball through six innings did throw a hundred pitches. So
07:10didn't get the chance to prolong the no hit bid against
07:13the Giants, but Arizona has won the first two in San Francisco
07:16and by the way yesterday, my favorite team total of the
07:19night was the Arizona Diamondbacks. They played six
07:21runs to cash that over. It's going to be much harder to
07:24score runs today. Birdsong yesterday. Not a great pitcher
07:27Blake Snell, maybe the best overall pitcher in baseball
07:30over the past 60 days. Why do I say that? Take a look at this
07:3310 games started over the past two months here. 62 and two
07:37thirds innings pitched here. How about an ERA Ben of 1.30
07:41with an X-fifth of 290 absolutely tremendous pitchers
07:45ballpark. He should be able to be dominant tonight and you
07:47take a look at that Arizona Diamondbacks lineup today
07:50struggling over the past 30 days against left-handed pitching.
07:53This should be a great performance out of him against
07:55a pretty good lineup on the opposite side Merrill Kelly.
07:58Look at his last 30 days been 98 batters. He's faced an ISO
08:01307 against a weighted on base percentage of 427 against
08:05he's been absolutely hammered. This is the pitching mismatch.
08:08If we have 15 pitchers been on the card today 60 days minimum
08:12of 20 innings. You got number one verse number 15. There
08:17should be a win for the Giants today. Blake Snell was so
08:20great in August really since his return in July in July. He
08:24did not win a decision but had a 0.75 ERA only allowing
08:29two earned in four starts seven earned in six starts in
08:33August 2 and 0 with a 164 ERA. Meanwhile, you look at Merrill
08:39Kelly who made his return in the month of August since the
08:44end of April for Arizona gave up 16 earned runs DRS, but
08:49does not have a loss on the resume and actually won two
08:53games despite a 675 ERA. The Giants have been struggling
08:58though. They've lost fourth grade six of their last seven
09:01nine of their last 12 no longer really in postseason
09:04consideration in the National League next up on this nine
09:08game slate around MLB. We go to San Diego. The Tigers had a
09:14five-nothing lead early yesterday Detroit playing much
09:17better baseball. They've won 10 of their last 14 before the
09:21Padres rally and eventually walk it off in extra San Diego
09:25minus 158 is a home favorite today total of eight against
09:29the Tigers. What do you like? Don't really like the pitchers
09:32all that much in either side. But having said that you're
09:34still pitching out in Petco, which is the true pitchers
09:36ballpark. My team Perez hasn't had a great season by any
09:38stretch and over the past 60 days for him 53 and a third
09:42innings pitch in ERA right around four and an expert
09:44number of 4.57. Here's the problem. The Detroit Tigers
09:47not a great offense by any stretch, but they haven't hit
09:50left-handed pitching all that well over the past month. You
09:53take a look at Matt Bierling and Hunter Torkelson outside
09:55of them. Everybody else pretty much below par. If we flip it
09:58over to the other side take a look at Casey Mize on the
10:01mound coming back. He's only had 25 batters that he's faced
10:04over the past 30 days been okay against them. It's just one
10:07of those where you look at it Detroit's not going anywhere.
10:09The Padres need this game. I know it's not the best way to
10:11bet things but you took a look at Martine Perez. I think you
10:14can hold down that Detroit offense. You have a lockdown
10:17plan on the opposite side with San Diego. I'll go that route
10:20late about that minus 150 price or so Padres win this baseball
10:23game. The Padres the top team in the National League
10:26wildcard still a half game in front of Arizona Detroit was
10:30eight games below 500 on August 10th. They've won 15 of 22
10:34since back to an even 500, but San Diego looks for the sweep
10:38at home today. Next we go to Atlanta. The Braves have won
10:42both of the games against the Rockies bouncing back from the
10:45weekend series defeat to Philadelphia. You take out the
10:48weekend in Philly Atlanta's won eight of their last nine and
10:52they've needed to to hold off the Mets fill that half game
10:55advantage for the third and final National League wildcard
10:59spot. The Braves a hefty favorite yesterday with Charlie
11:02Morton on the bump minus 270. They were a hefty favorite in
11:05the opener with Chris sale near a $3 favorite today against
11:08the Rockies who have been eliminated by the way from NL
11:11playoff contention. Yeah, it's it's paint by numbers in this
11:14game. You should get an easy victory for Atlanta Ronaldo
11:16Lopez here past 60 days 2.37 era. He's been phenomenal since
11:20he's been pitching for the Atlanta Braves and an expert
11:22number of 3.30. Here's the issue. Austin Gomber can't get
11:25right out right-handed bats are going to get a ton of right-handed
11:28action tonight. Only two batters Ozuna and Merrifield have below
11:32average ISO power numbers against left-handed pitching
11:34over the past month. They should rake they should pitch. Well,
11:37it should be another easy victory for the Braves over the
11:40Colorado Rockies total is a first two games. Both Atlanta
11:44victories. The game has stayed awesome.
