00:00:00Exciting here wonderful atmosphere. The humidity has really grown. It's quite moist out there temperature in the air 28 degrees
00:00:07Not quite as warm as it was yesterday, but still plenty warm enough for a motor race
00:00:13Track temperature is not too high though. James really certainly not as high as we saw in qualifying yesterday
00:00:18And this is a track that doesn't absorb the heat like some of the others
00:00:22You'll see it's lighter in color on Dennis was talking to me about this this morning
00:00:25Saying it's a lighter texture in color and it doesn't soak up the temperature
00:00:29And I don't think that's going to play a big factor this afternoon
00:00:32We understand that they're cleaning up Alonso's car that caught fire on the grid and Marquez is going into that
00:00:37So maybe they've given Alonso the healthier car team tactics
00:00:42Understandably Alonso tends to be faster than Marquez so I can understand why Paul Stoddart
00:00:47Would do that if that is indeed what he's done
00:00:50Technical problem, but a beautiful sight then as the cars head out into the forest
00:00:56This is such a narrow track James really does feel
00:00:59Narrow in a formula one car over 200 miles an hour because it's bumpy you can't run side-by-side very closely with another car without
00:01:06feeling that you're gonna, you know touch at some point quite easily and
00:01:11Then there's very much a desperately like breaking points and threading one by one through these tight chicanes
00:01:17I was interested to hear what you're saying on the grid about taking the wing off some of the cars of
00:01:21Taking the wing off they want to go faster in a straight line clearly overtaking today the absolute priority
00:01:26I think the only chance that McLaren have got of beating Williams today is to try and get track position
00:01:31Basically, and that's to be faster down the straights if they don't do it quite early on in the in the process
00:01:36Then their rear tires will start to fade
00:01:38I believe because the car slides around a lot more in the corners with less downforce
00:01:43Remember these cars are like aeroplane wings upside down
00:01:46The wing is pushing the car into the racetrack take away some of that wing you take away some drag you go faster in the
00:01:52Straight lines, but you struggle in the corners to really maximize it and get all the grip
00:01:58You need a real festival of color here in the stadium section
00:02:02There's Ferrari's master strategist Ross Braun and there is the Williams team Sam Michael with his back to you
00:02:08He's the main strategist Patrick head on the right there
00:02:11Interesting that they're in heated discussion about something but casting around some of the team managers
00:02:16They're all saying we don't think it's going to rain this afternoon
00:02:19It's definitely boiling up a little bit in the sky and it's a little bit windy out there
00:02:23But no team that I've spoken to is expecting rain during this race one Pablo
00:02:27Montoya then brings the field round his first pole position in Formula One
00:02:31But by no means his first pole position in serious motor racing
00:02:36He was the pace setter over in America in the car championship
00:02:39One ten races over there, of course one the very prestigious
00:02:43Indianapolis 500 last year chip ganassi's team his teammate there Ralph Schumacher
00:02:48He has one pole to his credit so far this season
00:02:50He's alongside him first Williams front row for almost four years a fantastic sight hacking them behind him and Michael Schumacher as well
00:02:58And Coulthard tremendous excitement into the first corner. Remember what happened last year?
00:03:03Michael Schumacher you saw pressing a button on the steering wheel that is part of quite a lengthy process
00:03:07He has to activate his launch his automatic start control and there are the two Menardis
00:03:14Lining up coming out of the pit lane
00:03:17So it's going to be an all-action start no doubt into this fast first corner 110 miles an hour in normal circumstances
00:03:23Three lights four lights five lights, you know what happens next
00:03:28Go
00:03:29Great stuff. I'm on target Ralph Schumacher's away. Well, there's also alongside him into the first corner and one of the Ferraris
00:03:35It's been left behind. It's Rubens Barricano
00:03:38Luciano Berti rolls it Luciano Berti got tangled up in a huge roll. That's sure to bring out the red flag
00:03:44I think you'll have to be is Michael got away slowly and then
00:03:48Just did not accelerate properly at all as Rubens Barricano is at the inside and there is the damage once again
00:03:55Michael Schumacher out of this race in the first corner, but the car parked absolutely in the middle of the racetrack
00:04:01Surely they will a red flag and safety cars standing by it says on the computer. That's obvious
00:04:06Will they be able to control this?
00:04:08That's a long lap here
00:04:09Of course James a minute 40 or so before they're going to get round to this part of the racetrack
00:04:14So it's a Williams one two and Barrichello up into third place
00:04:18Past Hakanen as one of the Saubers has a go at passing
00:04:22He'll get a penalty with that if he does not yield back to David Coulthard the Sauber must let Coulthard back through Bertie then
00:04:30unsighted did not see the slow Ferrari ahead of him and just launched off the back of it and the Ferrari and the
00:04:38Emergency vehicle still right in the middle of the track just towing now
00:04:42For the second time then in two years Michael Schumacher out at the first corner of the German Grand Prix
00:04:47They're pulling his car off the racetrack as one Montoya in the leading pack enter the stadium section
00:04:52They're going to make it by about 20 seconds safety car on the track. Good decision
00:04:56I think yes because and they've not put the red flag out because they have now dragged the stricken Ferrari out of the racing line
00:05:04Completely the safety car will pick them up
00:05:06That is more than anything to enable them to clear up the inevitable carbon fiber debris that I can see all over the racetrack
00:05:14Michael Schumacher, of course will have some feelings about this
00:05:16He might think this race possibly should have been stopped
00:05:19So we've given him a chance to get back into the pits to get into his spare car and start the race all over again
00:05:24But just look at this debris carbon fiber. It's enormously sharp very light material
00:05:28But pick it up in your tires and it'll just put a little slice in them
00:05:31Which when you're going at 220 miles an hour down the straight tire could let go at any time. Yeah, that's critical here
00:05:37These high-speed circuits where the tires are absolutely on the ragged edge
00:05:41Anyway, that's totally critical for a puncture and the drivers quite sensibly trying to pick their way through that
00:05:49But even a little shard can give you a puncture as you said
00:05:51Will there be some discussions going on right now with the drivers on the radio?
00:05:54I know when you were a Grand Prix driver
00:05:56You were always a big wheel in the Grand Prix Drivers Association
00:05:58You talked on the radio with the race organizers when a circumstance was too dangerous when it was too wet that kind of thing
00:06:04Will they be saying look get this stuff off the racetrack as quick as possible. Here's another look at the restart
00:06:08For sure, they will be they have now red flagged at this race. So the race is red flag
00:06:13I think there's too much debris on the track
00:06:14They've had to do that and now we're seeing a replay this time Michael Schumacher was slow away
00:06:19I was watching him out of the window, but then he just stopped accelerating completely
00:06:23Look, the pack goes around him and oh look completely unsighted behind the Jordan was Luciano Berti
00:06:30Collects and arrows of Bernal D on the way that car then is a sledge and it's just heading its way straight
00:06:37To the scene of the final part of his accident. The race is stopped. It's on lap one
00:06:43Therefore it'll be a whole new restart Michael Schumacher can take to the grid in the spare car
00:06:49that is why you're seeing the
00:06:51Action going on there Michael Schumacher can start this race. What a crazy start
00:06:57What a crazy start to the German Grand Prix, you're going to get it all over again folks
00:07:02The only bit you won't get was another gridwalk, but you'll get everything else
00:07:04You got a new start new parade lap and we will have a new formation situation
00:07:101426 then there's a 20-minute restart procedure
00:07:13They go into the whole new procedure and that has already been declared at 226 local time
00:07:19126 of course in the UK when they're going to restart this race and
00:07:24Well, a lot of people might say there'll be some
00:07:27Some chat in the paddock about oh, of course, they had the red flag because it's Michael Schumacher and it's Hockenheim and it's Ferrari
00:07:33But I firmly believe there was much too much debris on that racetrack
00:07:38And here we go then with another replay Berti
00:07:40Unsighted behind the Jordan moves across the track has not read the speed differential because he's not been able to see it and really that's
00:07:47a lucky escape for three drivers
00:07:50Particularly Enrique Bernalde because Luciani Berti went right over the top of him
00:07:54He's seen situations like that in the past and there's another angle then Michael slowing down
00:07:58He's effectively out of this race James at this point. Look and now he certainly is
00:08:02through through this incident now and
00:08:05That is a horrible horrible accident and isn't it amazing?
00:08:09They've only just left the start line and look at the energy and look at the speed with which he
00:08:13Continues despite having ripped off his wheels and bodywork
00:08:16Look at the speed where he now connects with the tire barrier and that is virtually from a standing start
00:08:22We're hearing now that Michael Schumacher
00:08:24They're going to check but Luciano Berti is okay to apologize. No doubt for an awful awful situation
00:08:30There's a strong sense of brotherhood between these Grand Prix drivers that test themselves to the limit against each other every two weeks
00:08:37Michael just checking that he was okay, but we're hearing that Schumacher had a gear problem
00:08:42He lost didn't have any second third or fourth gears as he accelerated up through the box
00:08:47So restart is going to come up around the corner and all to play for still here at Hockenheim
00:09:12Oh
00:09:19Okay
00:09:21Oh
00:09:37You have but if you can make sure the fans get in there so we get a true flow of air as soon as possible
00:09:44Yes, that's rude Patrick
00:09:51I
00:10:21You
00:10:51You
00:11:07It's just gone 11 minutes past 2 here in central Germany and we should be watching a Grand Prix
00:11:14Underway, but as a result of a major accident into the first corner at the original start we have a red flag
00:11:21The race will start in another
00:11:2415 minutes time so we're going back to the formation on the grid
00:11:29All the cars are there and there is Michael Schumacher who has now got into the spare car
00:11:33He was involved in the incident with Luciano Berti into turn one
00:11:36And here is the truck just sweeping up the bits of carbon fiber debris
00:11:40Which of course is so potentially damaging to the tires on the cars, it was a good decision
00:11:45I think to stop the race
00:11:47But really there's hacking and and David Coulthard have a discussion really one wonders whether or not they might in the red flagged it a little
00:11:54Bit earlier even Ted Kravitz. What can you tell us? Yeah, James. I'm down here back on the grid
00:11:58Of course, some of us can get back onto the grip the pit wall. I'm right opposite Michael's car
00:12:02There is a calm sense of all right. Let's just do it one more time
00:12:06It is an incredible letoff for Schumacher. It was looking terrible for his World Championship
00:12:10Hope's not that they were that bad. Anyway, but it was looking just the thing for David Coulthard
00:12:15However, he now is into the spare. He looks calm. I mean, he's not, you know, just tickulating around or anything
00:12:20He's okay. The losers here though. I think James are all the other cars the McLarens and the Williams
00:12:25They've already been through the stresses of a start Schumacher is effectively in a new car
00:12:32That's an important point but there is enough time with this 20-minute gap this set procedure that all of the
00:12:39Team managers know very very well. They keep a little piece of laminated paper in their pocket with the exact procedure to go through this again
00:12:48Rubens Barrichello will be disappointed with that restart
00:12:50He was up from sixth on the grid to third already had a wonderful start did a Rubens Barrichello and a very calm
00:12:58Montoya and this this is the time when Grand Prix drivers really earn their money James when you know
00:13:04It sorts out those that can keep their head in the heat of the moment and those that can't and you just hanging around
00:13:10Just keeping your pulse down breathing normally a little reset button in your head and okay
00:13:15It's a start of yet another Grand Prix. No problem
00:13:17What about when you've been up in the air rolling through the hour thinking back?
00:13:20Of course to the Australian Grand Prix 96 when you did that in the Jordan and barrel rolling into that corner
00:13:25Running back to get into the spare car. Can you really just flick a switch and say right new start?
00:13:30I've forgotten everything that just happened to me. I've forgotten rolling through the air at over a hundred miles an hour. Absolutely
00:13:35You're here to race
00:13:36You've spent three days now getting ready for this Grand Prix plus pre-race testing and all of the other
00:13:42Aspects of coming to this the 2001 German Grand Prix and if you can race if you can get into the spare car
00:13:49That's all you're thinking about. There's no nothing else enters your mind at all
00:13:54A lot of work there going on down on David Coulthard's car
00:13:58Furious discussions at the front
00:14:00They've got the opportunity of course just to make any last-minute changes things that they perhaps wish they'd done on the grid first time
00:14:06Round and they're a well-oiled operation
00:14:08The McLaren team as are most of the teams in this field Formula One the level
00:14:12Standard of professionalism really has gone through the roof in the last few years
00:14:17But it's a slightly more sparse grid we're looking at
00:14:19As Peter Sauber on the left and his young protégé Nick Heidfeld another outstanding
00:14:24Qualifying performance by the Sauber team. They really are very strong about to
00:14:29Announce that they're going to have the Ferrari engines for another two years, which really is the cornerstone of their competitiveness
00:14:34I reckon. Yeah, I think that's important for Sauber
00:14:37I hear that they could or they need a lot more sponsorship money to certainly if they're going to maintain
00:14:42The pace they've had this year and improve it for next year
00:14:45But they've they've been the sensation of the season really you have to say Sauber underperformed for so many years with
00:14:51sometimes a lot of very good equipment and decent sponsorship and
00:14:57But this year they finally delivered we're hearing the crowd cheering the
00:15:01Prancing horse there looks rather more like Bambi at the moment, doesn't it?
00:15:06just after it was born sadly with its wheels pointing in the wrong direction, but
00:15:11Other winners then in all of this, of course other Minardi team they can now once again
00:15:15go to the back of the grid and hope that they don't catch fire this time around and
00:15:20They can start the race proper instead of starting from the pit lane wouldn't make a huge amount of difference to them because they were
00:15:25On the back of the grid anyway
00:15:27Yes, the two Minardis are now on the grid where they should be as Pedro de la Rosa
00:15:32Outqualified Eddie Irvine this weekend. That was an important milestone for him the Jaguar team Irvine really has had the upper hand
00:15:38throughout the season
00:15:39But de la Rosa this time around just getting the edge and that will have done his confidence a power of good
00:15:45So Luciano Berti has made it out of the pit lane just with about 40 seconds to go
00:15:51He's made it out of the pit lane in the prost the guy of course that was upside
00:15:55We're not quite upside down but flying through the air
00:15:58So he should we think be making his way around the back of the track now
00:16:02He will arrive on the grid with plenty of time to spare
00:16:08Of course when we go again, it'll be exactly the same procedure
00:16:11There is Luciano Berti who says Grand Prix drivers are made of anything other than the hardest of steel
00:16:16Coming round just making it out as Martin was saying in time to get onto the grid
00:16:22And this is a good moment. I think
00:16:25As Luciano Berti comes around to take up the grid while Montoya of course sitting on pole
00:16:30Ralf Schumacher
00:16:32Alongside him a good moment before the restart to take a quick break
00:16:38Mick Ainsley Cowlishaw it was hard to see what happened at the start there
00:16:48Did either of your cars pick up any damage?
00:16:50Yeah, we caught a lot of damage with Enrique
00:16:52We've actually changed the engine cover front wing and a rear wing
00:16:55So the rest of the car is okay
00:16:57Jos fortunately missed anything so he's fine
00:16:59Thanks very much. Best of luck
00:18:39Oh
00:18:50It's the German Grand Prix the restart off will be going off in about six or seven minutes time
00:18:55Delighted to tell you that both Michael Schumacher and Luciano Berti who were involved in that first corner accident
00:19:01They have both got into the spare cars and both will take the restart
00:19:06Louise Goodman, I believe has some news for us. Yes. I just had a quick one with the Prost doctor
00:19:09He said Luciano. He okay. He toughy. So Luciano obviously feeling no pain either battery so pumped up with adrenaline
00:19:15He's not sure what he's feeling. There is one slight injury though
00:19:18There's an ambulance outside the Jaguar pit at the moment
00:19:21One of the mechanics tripped over rushing back to the grid, but he seems to be okay
00:19:25Yeah, I wonder I don't think Luciano Berti will feel quite so good tomorrow morning when all the aches and pains come through
00:19:30Wouldn't surprise me at all
00:19:31If he hasn't shunted the vertebrae in his back up a little bit because it was a very very heavy landing
00:19:36He did actually go completely over and then landed on its undertray minus enough wheels for it to be
00:19:43Really a very very painful landing. So that is the view then from the high cam of the cars ready for the restart
00:19:51and Mika Hakkinen
00:19:53Looking moderately happy with life doesn't he looks it looks pretty calm and cool some of the drivers
00:19:59Elected to stay in the car thought de la Rosa looked a little bit heavy in the eyes when we saw him we paired into
00:20:04His crash helmet a few minutes ago
00:20:06Most of the drivers got out had a walk around and I think we're treating it as just another Grand Prix star
00:20:12I think that's the best thing to do James. Otherwise, you're sitting in the cockpit just doing this is the second major accident for
00:20:19Luciano Berti
00:20:21This season, of course in the qualifying at the Australian Grand Prix as you will recall
00:20:26He had a very substantial accident in the Jaguar which he was then driving transferred across the cross team
00:20:32Around about the Spanish Grand Prix time. Let's take another look at the restart Martin. This is the best angle
00:20:36I think this one
00:20:37yeah, and the Bertie then is unsighted behind the Jordan that's going to flash through the picture now and
00:20:43Suddenly realizes he's closing in on the back of that Ferrari hits the brakes, but it's way too late
00:20:47luckily did not land directly in the cockpit of
00:20:50In the arrows and then just skidding across and the wheels staying within the bounds of the racetrack, too
00:20:56So the spectators were safe
00:20:58There's a big big fence there anyway to scoop that sort of thing up
00:21:02but what it did leave was an awful lot of debris understandably right across the racetrack and
00:21:08Even under safety car conditions, they weren't really prepared to allow the cars to pass through there
00:21:14We've had sweepers on the racetrack
00:21:16We've had sweepers on the racetrack trying to get rid of all of that carbon fiber when it breaks up James
00:21:20It's really sharp and dangerous stuff and cuts the sidewall
00:21:24And then what happens is the tire just grows and grows and grows. You don't initially feel a puncture
00:21:29it grows at those high speeds well over 350 kilometers an hour and
00:21:34And then just let's go when you least need it to at the end of the long straights
00:21:39So the safety car moves off four minutes to go
00:21:42Four minutes to go you see four lights on the top there for red lights
00:21:44That means four minutes until the race will start just time for me to tell you a nice story
00:21:49I heard about um, Juan Montoya as we looked there at Mika Hakkinen
00:21:54Montoya's young man raced in Colombia
00:21:56Got as far as he could through karts and single-seaters and Formula Vauxhall Viva and whatever else they had
00:22:00Over there realized he needed a bigger wider platform
00:22:04But of course he had no money
00:22:05His father is an architect not a terribly successful one and he needed a break
00:22:09So he went looking for a racing series where there would be prize money available for the young drivers went to America
00:22:15The big problem then was how does he get to America from Colombia every fortnight?
00:22:19Just so happens his father had a friend who was in the flower export business
00:22:24Exporting carnations fresh carnations to the United States and every two weeks
00:22:30Montoya and his father would sit in the back of this plane with blankets and thermal coats on them with the flowers
00:22:36To get up to America so that he could race
00:22:38That's the commitment that's got this kid all the way through and it's got him now to pole position here of a German Grand Prix
00:22:44And being one of the front runners in this sport
00:22:45I thought when I was talking to him on the grid, it was just a bad aftershave
00:22:48But obviously it was spent too long spent in the cargo hull of a flower aircraft
00:22:53But anyway, it's coming up roses today so far on pole position, of course still for the restart and
00:23:00Well, we didn't really sort of look at them too much. Did we on the on the the first start?
00:23:04They were clearly one and two. I don't know which way around it was. I assume it was Montoya first
00:23:08we were all busy watching Michael Schumacher and all the antics going on around and behind him and
00:23:15Also quite interesting on that first lap
00:23:17We saw the Sauber going through the runoff zones at the chicanes and there's a the drivers have spoken to Charlie Whiting the race director
00:23:23about that because
00:23:25You're not allowed to gain a position but by going through those escape roads
00:23:29You can have a go at somebody if it doesn't work out go through the escape road tuck back in behind them
00:23:33You've not gained but you've certainly saved yourself from losing some positions as you would normally do if it was grass or a gravel
00:23:39Trap or whatever and there's there's a timing loop every 200 meters around this racetrack as there
00:23:46At every other Grand Prix circuit in the world
00:23:48And if the race director can see where somebody's had a clear speed advantage on the exit of a chicane
00:23:54Although he hasn't made a position up
00:23:56He will still be penalized we had that in the Formula 3000 race yesterday
00:23:59where a driver made a pass won the race because he had a better runoff of jumping the chicane before and
00:24:06They'll be looking very carefully at that today
00:24:10Also an opportunity I would thought Martin to have taken a look at your competitors to see how much rear wing they've got running
00:24:15Today, of course
00:24:16You've seen what kind of straight line speeds that they can do
00:24:18And maybe the opportunity just to just trim your your settings on the grid this restart
00:24:22Just to give yourself a better chance against your main rivals
00:24:25Yes, they'll all have wing covers on of course on the grid as long as they can I can see them now on
00:24:30the Williams as we see another replay of the start and
00:24:36Look for the red Ferrari now falling back through the field and Bertie then very very unsightly
00:24:42Wasn't he behind that Jordan and bang?
00:24:46That is the end of that just for a little while and well as we've said luckily all of them
00:24:53Back in cars back on the grid ready for another attempt this afternoon
00:24:57The engines have fired up now and Schumacher very concerned there about Bertie's health
00:25:04I think that's what that little discussion is all about. Are you okay? Because Michael knows how easy it is to do that and
00:25:11Remember that Michael had lost his gears. So effectively he was out of that Grand Prix
00:25:15Yes a lucky escape for all the men talk a little bit about race strategy now
00:25:19It's a 45 lap race, of course here at Hockenheim
00:25:22They use about 160 kilos of fuel
00:25:25We're expecting the one stoppers to come in around about like 25 to 30. Look at Montoya pointing slightly outwards
00:25:32It's an interesting angle haven't seen that one before normally the drivers point in at each other
00:25:36Certainly trying to block anyone coming through
00:25:39Great shot there of the two Williams is
00:25:42Fantastically proud day for Sir Frank Williams and Patrick head. They really are back now at the top of Grand Prix racing
00:25:47Yeah, this is the dummy grid, of course the dummy grid
00:25:50so they will now go around on the formation lap this lap counts as one of the Grand Prix laps and
00:25:57It's when they when they come around again is when they'll be getting their car pointed
00:26:02Where they wanted to be the inside of the track here is very dirty
00:26:05It's not the racing line at all
00:26:07But it does tend because I think it's fresher Tama does tend to have very good grip down the inside here
00:26:12I noticed them when the cars just went off into the tire covers off as we ride on board
00:26:16They would make a hacking and that Montoya had a brand new set of tires on the others all had a set of tires that
00:26:20Looked slightly scuffed. They'd done a lap or two, but Montoya definitely had a brand new set of tires. That's interesting decision
00:26:26Yeah
00:26:27Well, they they certainly both started the first Grand Prix as it were with brand new tires on and I think because this is a whole
00:26:34New Grand Prix a whole new start to the afternoon
00:26:37They can elect to do that if they choose to do so
00:26:40so Montoya leads them then down into the second chicane and of course standing starts are
00:26:46In recent years reasonably unusual for Montoya over there in IndyCar racing where they have rolling starts where he won the championship
00:26:53Of course, so for him on pole
00:26:56For a standing start is something he hasn't done since his Formula 3000 days
00:27:01Will be greatly helped of course by the introduction of launch control new systems that get the cars computer-controlled
00:27:07Driver just presses a button now and when the lights go out
00:27:10He just car takes over and does the rest hurls the thing at the first corner since the introduction of launch control
00:27:17They now get up to a hundred miles an hour
00:27:19Even faster than they did before takes just under four seconds to get one of these things from a standing start
00:27:24To a hundred miles an hour. It's a staggering thought isn't it?
00:27:26They're all doing well over a hundred for the time
00:27:28They arrive at the first corner Jean top on the right there
00:27:31The sporting director Ferrari Norbert Haug there on the left from Mercedes-Benz a lot of pressure on Mercedes today
00:27:37BMW have them on the back foot intense competition here in Germany between the two
00:27:42Leading car makers both have many thousands of employees and guests in the grandstands here
00:27:48I know that Mercedes have 5,000 tickets just for their employees
00:27:52In this wonderful motor drone as they call it
00:27:55Fantastic stadium next year, of course, this circuit will be redeveloped be even more
00:28:00Stadium sections
00:28:02Is the local hero?
00:28:04Michael Schumacher
00:28:06But all eyes focused once again on the front row one Montoya and Ralph Schumacher
00:28:10David Coulthard, of course who's starting alongside Michael Schumacher on the grid will be grimacing slightly thinking
00:28:16I could well have done with him out of this race today for my world championship chances
00:28:21So a big save then so far for Michael Schumacher to be able to restart this Grand Prix
00:28:27But the reset button has been hit then and they've all got an equal chance once again
00:28:35Today's
00:28:36attention the atmosphere
00:28:39Their adrenaline's already been pumped to the limit once this afternoon. It's about to be pumped to the limit once again
00:28:47Everything is in place
00:28:49Two lights three lights go on four lights five lights up for the second time this afternoon
00:28:54It is go
00:28:56Montoya away
00:28:57Well, also Ralph Schumacher Michael Schumacher much better but Coulthard right alongside him into turn one
00:29:02Who's going to come out in front?
00:29:03It's very even Stevens between the two of them Bertie not surprisingly rather tentative through that corner for the first time
00:29:09But Coulthard and Michael Schumacher are going at it Hammer and Tom's and Rubens Barrichello looks to make a move
00:29:14Yeah Barrichello then all over the back of Coulthard can Coulthard find a way around the outside of the Ferrari into turn one
00:29:20Hacking and then losing a lot of speed as he heads down into the terminal speed zone down there
00:29:25Somebody's locked his brakes and another big accident
00:29:28Surely that must be Della Rosa the first of the Jaguars off the line running into the back of I suspect Nick Heidfeld in the Sauber
00:29:36So we have a Williams one to a Ferrari third and now my David Coulthard coming back
00:29:42It is Della Rosa in the Jaguar. We don't know the other Sauber driver yet
00:29:46It is how Heidfeld Heidfeld in the other car who does made it back past Rubens Barrichello a Benetton then across the escape road
00:29:54It's all happening
00:29:55Will they have to put the safety car out again and still the Ferrari and McLaren absolutely side by side
00:30:02That's Barrichello and Coulthard one more time
00:30:06That's going to get very tight Barrichello getting smart
00:30:09They're realizing it wasn't going to pay off and look how much more grunt he's got coming out of that chicane
00:30:15We don't know if it's wing level
00:30:16We know that Coulthard took a lot of wing off before the start of the Grand Prix for the warm-up this morning
00:30:21And still Coulthard with the racing line then and Barrichello making it stick around the outside and the Sauber now having a go of Raikkonen
00:30:30So Coulthard losing out then to Barrichello that time around that's a massive scrap for what is fifth and sixth places
00:30:37Fantastic wheel-to-wheel racing here at Hockenheim Coulthard seems to be dropping back though
00:30:41Has he got a problem? I want to look at the gap now already between himself and Barrichello
00:30:45Or indeed are they carrying different fuel loads? That's one possibility
00:30:48Coulthard went wide in the first part of that Sud curve
00:30:51So that's why he dropped back Coulthard getting right up into the marbles at the top there
00:30:55So Montoya leads then James from Ralf Schumacher by 1.4 at the end of the first lap
00:31:01Yes then it's Michael Schumacher third
00:31:02Here's the accident again Martin as de la Rosa hits into the back of Heidfeld
00:31:06Just misjudged his braking point from the looks of things
00:31:09That was the man I said sat in his car looking like he was getting stewed didn't I?
00:31:13I thought de la Rosa looked a bit intense in that car and he's massively outbraked himself
00:31:18And then just hung on to the brake pedal and straight into the back of Heidfeld
00:31:23Shame there for Heidfeld, shame for de la Rosa too but clearly de la Rosa's fault
00:31:27So Montoya a 1.4 second advantage over his teammate Ralf Schumacher at the end of that first lap
00:31:33But Ralf Schumacher has set the fastest first sector time on the second lap
00:31:37So these two are pushing each other very hard
00:31:39Michael Schumacher is third, Micke Häkkinen fourth, Barrichello is fifth, Coulthard down to sixth
00:31:44Kimi Räikkönen pressing very hard in 7th place in the Sauber
00:31:47Eddie Irvine has done well, he's in 8th place just what Jaguar needed
00:31:51Because they've got a very fast race car and they're enormously frustrated always by their performance in qualifying
00:31:56This gives Irvine possibly a platform for the afternoon to really do something
00:32:009th is Trulli and 10th Villeneuve
00:32:02And Barrichello now lining up, Micke Häkkinen
00:32:05So are the Ferraris running lighter or are McLaren just way off the pace at the beginning of this Grand Prix?
00:32:11They were some 5 seconds adrift at the end of the first lap already
00:32:16So McLaren under pressure, Ferrari holding station really
00:32:20Michael looking pretty strong there in 3rd place actually
00:32:23At least still got the Williams in sight down the long start-finish straight here
00:32:28And look at Barrichello then all over the back of Häkkinen
00:32:31Never mind Barrichello, look at the gap now between Montoya and Ralf Schumacher
00:32:35After over 2 seconds the Colombian is really pushing hard, pulling away from his young teammate
00:32:41Similar age, both 25 within the heart of this Williams team
00:32:45And they're both desperate to make their mark
00:32:47Some great scrapping going on also through the field
00:32:49Barrichello and Häkkinen very close together in the battle for 5th place as well
00:32:53Jenson Button fans, he's 13th at the moment, not bad, up from 17th on the grid
00:32:58Montoya sets a new fastest lap
00:33:01Yeah, remember Montoya led the Brazilian Grand Prix
00:33:04And Barrichello, look how close he is now
00:33:06Häkkinen will have to go to the inside
00:33:08But the sort of speed differential we saw last time around
00:33:10Barrichello can go right down the outside
00:33:13And that was like taking candy from a baby, wasn't it?
00:33:16That was so easy because really when the drag is coming in heavily at the end
00:33:21They're doing 220 miles an hour at the end of those straights
00:33:24Really the Ferrari looked a lot cleaner through the air
00:33:28Whether it's wing level or whether it's just aerodynamics, we don't know
00:33:31Whether it's fuel indeed, you mentioned before
00:33:33They could be running a little bit like Gerhard Berger
00:33:35Won this race back in 1997 on a two-stop strategy
00:33:38Let's have a look at it from Micah Häkkinen's perspective
00:33:41Just breezes past, doesn't he?
00:33:42Absolutely, and I can see now that that's earlier in the race actually
00:33:47I think that's how Michael took third place at the start of the Grand Prix, James
00:33:52That's down the outside
00:33:53And Häkkinen's car seems to hit a brick wall, doesn't it?
00:33:56And just stops accelerating
00:33:58And they're just into the early part of the braking zone anyway there
00:34:01And the Ferrari's menacingly...
00:34:03And there is the accident behind
00:34:05De la Rosa miles out of bed with his braking
00:34:07Panicked really
00:34:08Once he realised he was a bit deep
00:34:10Just hit the middle pedal
00:34:11And it did not slow down
00:34:13It will never slow down while you've got your wheels locked up
00:34:16It's just the same as on the road
00:34:18And Montoya then, his lead up to 2.5 seconds last time around
00:34:24Well, there was nothing between Ferrari and McLaren in this morning's warm-up
00:34:27It was very close indeed, as it was yesterday in qualifying as well
00:34:31So what has happened with the McLarens this afternoon?
00:34:33Have they got an endgame in mind?
00:34:36Are they carrying more fuel?
00:34:37All these things are possible
00:34:38Or simply have they got the wrong wing angles?
00:34:40David Coulthard unhappy with his car yesterday
00:34:42But Micah Häkkinen very happy with his
00:34:44Now look, Barrichello then, has he passed Häkkinen?
00:34:47Yes, he has
00:34:48So, well, we saw that, didn't we?
00:34:50So, Barrichello then immediately pulling out a big gap on Micah Häkkinen
00:34:55And beginning to hone in on the back of Michael Schumacher now
00:34:58So we're wondering, is he on a lower fuel load?
00:35:01Because it really did seem remarkably easy, didn't it?
00:35:03It certainly did
00:35:04Montoya at the front though, continuing his relentless progress
00:35:07Away from everybody else
00:35:09He is now 2.5 seconds clear of his teammate
00:35:12And would you believe it?
00:35:135.4 seconds clear of Michael Schumacher
00:35:16In a league of his own at the moment
00:35:18Of course, a long way to go in this motor race
00:35:20Strategy will play a role
00:35:22Reliability most definitely will play a role
00:35:24As we see Zonta, I think, putting a nice move on Villeneuve
00:35:27That's for 10th place
00:35:29And indeed, Ricciardo Zonta standing behind Harold Frentzen
00:35:33Who was sacked on Wednesday, I believe
00:35:35By Eddie Jordan
00:35:36Putting a nice move on Jacques Villeneuve
00:35:38Making his way through the field
00:35:40Olivier Panis, in fact
00:35:41Sorry, I beg your pardon
00:35:42That's the battle for 12th place between Panis and Zonta
00:35:44Trulli and Villeneuve are 9th and 10th
00:35:51So Montoya then, a new fastest lap
00:35:54A 1.42.2
00:35:56That is 2 seconds underneath the lap record, James
00:35:59Of this racetrack already
00:36:01We've seen lap records slaughtered all around the world this year
00:36:05Haven't we?
00:36:06With the latest Formula 1 cars
00:36:07Sensational speeds they're doing
00:36:09And they're down already in the low 1.42s
00:36:12He was some half a second faster that time around, James
00:36:16And the dust you see in the background
00:36:18As they just run a little bit wide on the exit of Turn 1
00:36:21Nothing like as dramatic as it first appears
00:36:24The pace of development in Formula 1 is relentless
00:36:27And certainly the biggest leaps at the moment being made by the tyres
00:36:30Michelin on this
00:36:31Williams you're looking at have won Montoya, of course
00:36:33And Bridgestone with Ferrari
00:36:36And McLaren
00:36:38And the gaps have come down so much
00:36:403, 4 seconds a lap we are faster than last year
00:36:43Mainly due to the tyres
00:36:44Well, of course, Williams are very much attached to Michelin for the future
00:36:49We understand that the Ferraris will be with Bridgestone for the next 4 years
00:36:54So, what will McLaren do?
00:36:56What would you do if you were McLaren, James?
00:36:59I think I'd go Michelin, wouldn't you?
00:37:00I would like to see McLaren go with Michelin
00:37:02I think that would be really good for Formula 1
00:37:05To see them go a different way from Ferrari
00:37:07They've been their principal competition really for the last 4 years
00:37:10Now you can see that Michelin together with Williams and BMW are getting very strong
00:37:14As Zonta misses the chicane
00:37:16He'll have to be careful to feed himself back in in the right place
00:37:18And I think he has done that
00:37:20Very cleverly done
00:37:21Because if you gain a place by jumping through the chicane like that
00:37:24You will get a 10 second stop and go penalty
00:37:26Extremely expensive round here
00:37:28And we've seen it cost people over the last few years
00:37:30Yeah, I went down one of those escape roads backwards once in Alige
00:37:33And still got penalised
00:37:35And had a stop and go penalty which I never did understand
00:37:38You normally get a fine to go with that as well
00:37:40But anyway, look
00:37:42The Ferraris line are stern
00:37:44Barrichello just 7 tenths behind
00:37:46Michael Schumacher there, 3rd and 4th
00:37:48Hakkinen, 5th and 6th
00:37:49But they're lapping well, well over a second a lap slower
00:37:53Than the leading Williams at the moment
00:37:55So it didn't look like it after the warm up
00:37:57That Williams were going to run and hide
00:37:59Certainly did after qualifying yesterday
00:38:01But right now, they are disappearing
00:38:03They're a full 7.6 seconds ahead of 3rd place man
00:38:07Michael Schumacher
00:38:09Well it's been a race with plenty of drama at the start
00:38:11We're looking at Mikko Hakkinen's wife Eiria there
00:38:14And one of the other dramas we had of course
00:38:16Was the Minardi scenario
00:38:18Where both of them were off the grid, the original grid
00:38:20Alonso's car caught fire
00:38:22Marquez's car was pulled into the pit lane
00:38:24I can tell you they're running last, 19th and 20th
00:38:26And amazingly Martin
00:38:28As we look at David Coulthard's girlfriend there
00:38:30Marquez is already 11 seconds behind his teammate
00:38:33And we're only 5 laps into this motor race
00:38:35Yeah, and for some reason Coulthard's fuel flap is open
00:38:38On the wrong side of the car
00:38:39They're held on by Nasser Jordan
00:38:41With some damage by the looks of it
00:38:43Looks like he's got his front wing hanging out
00:38:45And getting in there
00:38:47It's gone now completely
00:38:49So that was truly, we believe
00:38:52So Jarno truly then has clearly run into the back of somebody
00:38:56No, it's Zonta, I'm sorry
00:38:58It's new boy Zonta, the man who replaced
00:39:00Heinz-Harald Frentzen
00:39:02But according to the computer printout
00:39:04Well we saw him
00:39:06Making that mistake at the chicane
00:39:08And Riccardo Zonta
00:39:10Not exactly covering himself in glory
00:39:12On his Grand Prix debut
00:39:14With Jordan
00:39:16Here's what he did
00:39:18He's just tagged, look
00:39:20Into the very high speed middle part
00:39:22Of the track
00:39:24And he went to use the slipstream he'd picked up
00:39:27And the piece of road he was aiming at
00:39:29Just disappeared
00:39:31As the arrows pulled across
00:39:33It wasn't too dramatic
00:39:35It just was, well that could have been a very nasty incident
00:39:37It's almost Martin like Jordan
00:39:39Have put a curse on themselves this weekend
00:39:41Haven't they, they've fired Heinz-Harald Frentzen
00:39:43Before the weekend, before even his own home Grand Prix
00:39:45There are banners throughout this stadium
00:39:47Saying Jordan go home
00:39:49He hates you
00:39:51And throughout the weekend they've just had a catalogue of disasters
00:39:53Engine blow-ups, car failures
00:39:55In qualifying yesterday for Trulli
00:39:57And again in the warm-up this morning
00:39:59Now Zonta has lost his front wing
00:40:01And Jordan will want to forget
00:40:03The 2001 German Grand Prix
00:40:05As Zonta comes into his pit
00:40:07It's all part of the soap opera of Formula 1 though isn't it
00:40:09You can go from hero to zero very quickly
00:40:11But you can also go from zero to hero as well
00:40:13In this game, just as quickly
00:40:15And Eddie Jordan knows that only too well
00:40:17Let's talk about a man then who's turned his fortunes around
00:40:19That's got to be Juan Montoya
00:40:21Yesterday Frank Williams said he thought
00:40:23That Montoya had had a really good talk to himself
00:40:25After Montreal where he almost got into a fist fight
00:40:27With Jacques Villeneuve in the driver's briefing
00:40:29He was over-aggressive in Monaco
00:40:31Over-aggressive in Montreal
00:40:33And this weekend he really has shown
00:40:35He's turned it all around
00:40:37And Luis has news for us
00:40:41Luis doesn't have news for us right now
00:40:43But what we're looking at here
00:40:45Is Barrichello being allowed past Michael Schumacher
00:40:47Up into third place
00:40:49Somewhat confirming I think
00:40:51Our idea
00:40:53That he may well be running on low fuel
00:40:55At the start of this Grand Prix
00:40:57Got off the line like a rocket
00:40:59And he's been seething
00:41:01Scything past cars
00:41:03And Michael quite clearly letting him go through there
00:41:05But I'm surprised how much gap Michael's then
00:41:07Allowed to develop so quickly
00:41:09But Barrichello then
00:41:11Now getting after those Williams
00:41:13He's nine seconds behind the leader
00:41:15Won the race here last year
00:41:17Rubens Barrichello from 18th place
00:41:19On the grid
00:41:21He started this race from 6th
00:41:23And well, he's certainly challenging now
00:41:25Luis Goodman
00:41:27This time with Pedro de la Rosa
00:41:29Pedro, was that maybe a slightly over-optimistic move?
00:41:31Yeah, I made a mistake coming into the second chicane
00:41:33I braked too late
00:41:35Just as simple as that
00:41:37Sometimes you have to take risks
00:41:39I made a good start
00:41:41It was not that I braked too late
00:41:43It was just later than I would
00:41:45It's just that they were stuck in the first chicane
00:41:47Really slow
00:41:49Everyone was in first gear
00:41:51And I arrived there completely too quick
00:41:53And could not stop the car
00:41:55Locked, hit Nick
00:41:57And that was the end
00:41:59Thanks Pedro
00:42:01Yeah, they're always slow in the chicanes on the first lap
00:42:03As everybody's jockeying for position
00:42:05That's a guaranteed, that's not a maybe
00:42:07That's a definitely
00:42:09Already then, Barrichello has opened up
00:42:11On Michael Schumacher
00:42:13Schumacher lapping
00:42:151.4 seconds slower
00:42:17Than the two Williams
00:42:19That are running first and second at the moment
00:42:21And Montoya's lead then
00:42:23Up to 4.7 seconds
00:42:25And as you can see now for yourself
00:42:27Barrichello, 4.3 seconds further down the road
00:42:29In third position
00:42:31Can he make this lower fuel load work for him
00:42:33This afternoon
00:42:35He's got a heavy and hard afternoon ahead of him
00:42:37And that presumably then
00:42:39Is Zonta
00:42:41Pulling out of the race
00:42:43There must be some other form of damage
00:42:45On Zonta's Jordan
00:42:47From when he tagged
00:42:49With the arrows going down the straight
00:42:51Ricardo Zonta then retires
00:42:53From 20th place in this German Grand Prix
00:42:55Montoya still leading after 8 laps
00:42:57From Ralf Schumacher
00:42:59Barrichello up to third
00:43:01Having been let through by his team leader
00:43:03Michael Schumacher
00:43:05Montoya is the rival who is down in 6th place
00:43:07Between the two of them still
00:43:09Mika Hakkinen, Kimi Raikkonen holding on in 7th place
00:43:11Another strong performance
00:43:13From this young Finnish driver
00:43:15Then Eddie Irvine in 8th
00:43:17Just 6 tenths of a second behind Raikkonen
00:43:19Trulli is in the fight as well in 9th
00:43:21Jacques Villeneuve is in 10th place
00:43:23And we're looking at the race leader
00:43:25Juan Montoya and this is what he got a reputation for
00:43:27Over in the United States
00:43:29Pulling away from the start
00:43:31A very aggressive, feisty racing driver
00:43:33He's a fantastic physical presence
00:43:35Montoya, big, powerful forearms
00:43:37A real barroom brawler
00:43:39Louise, what can you tell us?
00:43:41Well, I'm stood here with Nick Haifa
00:43:43Let's get the other side of the story
00:43:45Nick, Pedro, admit your responsibility for that one
00:43:47Presumably you'd agree with him
00:43:49Yeah, I mean, I think everybody who saw it on the TV
00:43:51Has to say that it wasn't my mistake
00:43:53But I'm out of the race
00:43:55And your face is registering your disappointment
00:43:57Yeah, I mean, we've been very strong
00:43:59All weekend, I've been on P7
00:44:01For the last two days
00:44:03And that's the maximum we can achieve
00:44:05And another really bad thing
00:44:07Is that it's the third or even the fourth time
00:44:09That I'm hit in the waist
00:44:11And nothing I could do about it
00:44:13Bad luck, Nick, thanks
00:44:15Yeah, definitely a very ambitious move there
00:44:17By, or mistake it really was
00:44:19By de la Rosa, which he was good enough to admit
00:44:21We're just watching a slow-mo
00:44:23Of the oversteering McLaren there
00:44:25Of David Coulthard
00:44:27With the fuel flap
00:44:29The Formula 1 cars have a fuel flap
00:44:31On both sides, because depending on the
00:44:33Direction of the racetrack
00:44:35And whether the pit's on the inside or the outside
00:44:37Of the racetrack
00:44:39You fuel left or you fuel right
00:44:41You fuel right-hand side of the car
00:44:43From the driver's perspective here
00:44:45So that is just a redundant flap this weekend
00:44:47That has managed to come up by itself
00:44:49And that will not be helping the aerodynamics
00:44:51On this high-speed
00:44:53Low-downforce racetrack
00:44:55I mentioned before that Eddie Irvine
00:44:57Has a better race car than he has a qualifying car
00:44:59And he's putting some moves now
00:45:01On Kimi Räikkönen, this is the battle right
00:45:03On your screens, I think the directors
00:45:05Cottoned on to it too, just 6 tenths of a second
00:45:07Between them as they went over the line last time
00:45:09And Irvine has been monstering him
00:45:11Through one or two of the chicanes on this lap
00:45:13We'll see what Kimi Räikkönen is made of
00:45:15Shortly, I think, and here's the
00:45:17Scrap going on for ninth place
00:45:19Trulli is leading from Villeneuve
00:45:21And Panis in this scrap, this is really the middle race
00:45:23With the BARs and the Jordans
00:45:25Scrapping it out for perhaps the last
00:45:27Of the points positions, but at the moment
00:45:29You have to say, Sauber have got the upper hand
00:45:31On these two teams, not what we expected
00:45:33But it's certainly what's being played out here
00:45:35I think Panis is ahead now, he's near Villeneuve
00:45:37So Panis somewhere has
00:45:39Snuck past Villeneuve
00:45:41To take that tenth place, yes indeed
00:45:43He has, so three
00:45:45Honda-engined cars
00:45:47Then a Leinster and the other one
00:45:49Out of the race with Zonta, tripping over
00:45:51Early on, tripping over
00:45:53And Arrows, and losing the nose
00:45:55And probably damaging the suspension as well
00:45:57And this is a very good scrap in the middle of the field
00:45:59Ninth, tenth and eleventh
00:46:01Then, but if, I tell you
00:46:03If those Williams are
00:46:05One stopping this afternoon, this is a whitewash
00:46:07Because they're romping away a second
00:46:09A second and a half per lap
00:46:11From the Ferraris
00:46:13And the McLarens
00:46:15In particular, and if they only
00:46:17Have to stop once this afternoon, they're going to win it by
00:46:19A country mile
00:46:21And it's Montoya turning the same sort of lap times
00:46:23On this last time through as Barrichello
00:46:25So he's going quickly as well, we think he's running low fuel
00:46:27Gives you an idea of the
00:46:29Kind of pace of the Williams at the moment, this is a good scrap though
00:46:31Olivier Panis in the white B.A.R
00:46:33Chasing down Jarno Trulli
00:46:35In the yellow Jordan
00:46:37A scrap for ninth place, yet Jack Villeneuve
00:46:39Has either been passed by his teammate
00:46:41Or allowed his teammate through
00:46:43To attack Trulli, this of course
00:46:45The battle for honour amongst the two
00:46:47Honda teams, a fierce scrap between them
00:46:49This season, both using the same
00:46:51Works Honda engine, and this is really a racetrack
00:46:53Where you can see whether the chassis is better, he's making a move
00:46:55Yeah, he's making him go
00:46:57The long way around, is Jarno Trulli
00:46:59And has Panis got enough at the end
00:47:01Of the straight? No, he clearly has not
00:47:03And he really got on
00:47:05The brakes quite early there, did Olivier Panis
00:47:07Realising it wasn't going to work that time around
00:47:09Braking absolutely is critical
00:47:11Here it seems this weekend, it's really been
00:47:13Underlined, you've got to get your braking right
00:47:15Not just in qualifying to go quickly
00:47:17But in every sense, to make your overtaking manoeuvre
00:47:19And of course, in De La Rosa's case
00:47:21Not to go crashing into the back of another car
00:47:23Absolutely, but Panis
00:47:25Certainly getting on his brake pedal very early
00:47:27In that manoeuvre, I think he gave up on that one
00:47:29Very early in the process
00:47:31But Montoya there, locking his unloaded
00:47:33Inside left into Sachs
00:47:35Hairpin, but no ABS brakes
00:47:37On these cars, of course, unlike
00:47:39Most road cars these days
00:47:41No ABS is allowed
00:47:43And a good thing too
00:47:45I don't think there should be
00:47:47Automatic gearboxes either
00:47:49A fundamental aspect of driving
00:47:51A racing car is turning the wheel
00:47:53Pressing the throttle, controlling the engine power
00:47:55And knowing how hard
00:47:57And exactly how to and when to
00:47:59Brake, and Luis
00:48:01Is down in the pits
00:48:03With Ricciardo's on to Ricciardo, and he said to me
00:48:05Just before the race, I'm having a nightmare weekend
00:48:07I think you just added to that, what happened?
00:48:09The race was quite okay
00:48:11The car seems okay in the race
00:48:13But when Verstappen made a mistake
00:48:15On the gymkhane
00:48:17I catch his toe and I was going
00:48:19To overtake him
00:48:21I was beside him
00:48:23And he just closed the door
00:48:25I don't know if he didn't see me there
00:48:27But I was completely beside him
00:48:29And I, you know, touched
00:48:31My front wing, then was gone my race
00:48:33You're obviously trying to keep this drive
00:48:35Not the race you wanted, really
00:48:37Sorry? You're trying to keep this drive
00:48:39Not really the race you wanted
00:48:41It was a very difficult weekend for me
00:48:43Of course I felt some pressure
00:48:45But I made some mistakes
00:48:47On the weekend
00:48:49Also some problems
00:48:51It was very difficult
00:48:53And there you saw Panis finally getting braver
00:48:55On the brake pedal
00:48:57Down the outside of Trulli
00:48:59I don't really know why Trulli allowed that
00:49:01Apparently to happen so easily
00:49:03But Trulli looked like he was on the ragged edge
00:49:05Trying to slow down as well
00:49:07On the inside line, and Trulli now picking up the toe
00:49:09But he does not
00:49:11He tries to have a go at the last moment
00:49:13That was really clumsy
00:49:15Totally clumsy of Trulli
00:49:17He was going to have a go
00:49:19He's shaking his head in the cockpit
00:49:21And rightly so
00:49:23Like, I'll have a go, no I won't
00:49:25Yes I will after all
00:49:27And that is the net result of a silly spin
00:49:29I could have done that
00:49:31Ridiculous by Jarno Trulli
00:49:33Very strange mistake
00:49:35Montoya leading then on lap 12
00:49:377.4 seconds now
00:49:39As they cross the line
00:49:41He really is in control of this motor race
00:49:43But there's a long way to go yet
00:49:45We haven't had the pit stops
00:49:47An awful lot can still happen
00:49:49Here's another look at the move
00:49:51Yes, and Trulli then locking up on the inside
00:49:53This is the first chicane
00:49:55And then, no sorry, it's the second chicane
00:49:57So it was almost a carbon copy
00:49:59Of what happened when he went up the inside
00:50:01Of the previous chicane to that
00:50:03And let's see another replay
00:50:05Well, just
00:50:07Just a silly pathetic spin really, wasn't it
00:50:09And the man on the move at the moment
00:50:11Is Rubens Barrichello
00:50:13Just 2.6 seconds now
00:50:15Behind Ralf Schumacher as we take another look
00:50:17At the spin of Jarno Trulli
00:50:19Barrichello going faster
00:50:21Than Ralf Schumacher that last lap
00:50:23By two tenths of a second, he's eating in
00:50:25To the advantage, Michael Schumacher and Mikko Häkkinen
00:50:27Are fourth and fifth and they're lapping
00:50:29Some 1.3 seconds a lap
00:50:31Slower than that battle
00:50:33For second and third places, Eddie Irvine
00:50:35Comes out of the pits
00:50:37Yes, Irvine, the only remaining Jaguar
00:50:39Delarosa, out of the race
00:50:41On the first lap
00:50:43Irvine was running strongly in eighth, he's on the softer
00:50:45Michelin tyres, the only team to run
00:50:47Those of the Michelin runners
00:50:49And quite clearly is on a two stopper
00:50:51This afternoon, so Montoya then
00:50:537.4 seconds ahead of Ralf Schumacher
00:50:55Barrichello just
00:50:572.6 seconds further down the road

00:58:31Jenson button having a good afternoon. He's up into eighth place and running on the same sort of pace actually as
00:58:38for example
00:58:39Coulthard and panis and cone vilna the runners that are now just ahead of him in terms of positions on the racetrack
00:58:46So jenson button
00:58:47Certainly having his strongest run for the benetton team
00:58:53Good to see jenson button
00:58:55Working his way back up towards the front
00:58:58Story going around the paddock this weekend that the odds that you and I talked about yesterday in qualifying martin of nine to one
00:59:03On montoya getting a pole position david robertson who is jenson buttons manager was telling you and I both about it
00:59:10The story is he put 10 grand on it
00:59:12As montoya goes past the back marker minardi there and made 90 000 pounds from the bet not bad work
00:59:17Well done him, but I would imagine there that montoya would grimace a little bit remember when he
00:59:23Peerlessly led the brazilian grand prix only to have a lapped car verstappen at that time running to the back of him and
00:59:31It was just just to see him pass and chop back in front of that minardi
00:59:35Just brought that picture back in my mind. So we have seen this man. This is a ralph schumacher
00:59:40Because we have seen montoya
00:59:42Able and comfortable to lead a grand prix even in his first season of grand prix racing
00:59:47And he does seem to have the confidence and the mental strength to do that and this then
00:59:51Is barrichello who has pit stopped once up behind the sole remaining mclaren of david coulthard
00:59:58They are currently then fourth and fifth
01:00:01Yes, this is a battle and ferrari will want
01:00:04You see the crowd on their feet willing the ferrari on or possibly willing the mclaren on with that mercedes powerplant
01:00:10They have a huge following here in germany mercedes-benz ferrari though will want rubens to give david coulthard a very hard time
01:00:17Because he's the main championship rival of michael schumacher with 27 laps of this grand prix remaining
01:00:24This is lap 18, but it's strange, isn't it?
01:00:26We're 100 kilometers 60 miles from stuttgart the main base of mercedes-benz as you watch
01:00:34Bertie, he's having an exciting afternoon. He's been upside down once he's in another car and
01:00:39Recovering there from a spin by the looks of it. He's currently running in 10th place though
01:00:44We've had a lot of retirements, of course add to that list definitely
01:00:48Raikkonen and irvine and louise's with mika hackenen. Yeah, mika
01:00:51We could see some kind of fluid coming out of your car. What was the problem a whole radiator?
01:00:57Well, uh
01:00:59Disappointing obviously we were going well
01:01:02Even we were running that time. I think we have a fifth
01:01:05running that time but
01:01:07I was very confident with the car that way we can bang a good result into the today
01:01:11I was looking for the finishing in podium, maybe third maybe second never know but uh
01:01:16Just a lot of vibration channelly arrived from behind me a lot of smoke
01:01:22And I lost the drive and engine just stopped
01:01:26Thanks mika
01:01:27David kuthar defending his corner heavily there and that's where we saw barricado pass earlier in the race when he had a lighter
01:01:34Fuel load and uh kothar really seemed helpless down the straights, didn't he with the ferrari in his slipstream?
01:01:41And uh, despite having knocked the wing off that car
01:01:44They're just not fast enough in a straight line
01:01:46These two were wheel to wheel in the early stages as rubens barricado put a move on david kothar
01:01:51He's looking to do it again
01:01:52Term one is not really the place but he'll be biding his time
01:01:55Thinking about the tight chicanes at the end of the long straight here the first chicane
01:01:59They'll be breaking from over 200 miles an hour down to 60 miles an hour and that might just be the place
01:02:05For rubens barricado to go for a rematch with david kothar
01:02:09Strange to see though that kothar is still a lamp to the slaughter because they're carrying roughly the same fuel
01:02:14If not barricado would actually be carrying a little bit more fuel in fact on a two-stopper kothar getting very leery though
01:02:21And that's what you hear. David kothar talking about. He said I don't like the balance of the car
01:02:25It's too oversteering the chicanes. That's what he means when the back end is stepping out
01:02:28He struggled on that in qualifying. He was blistering his tires barricado
01:02:32Trying to go the long way around and david just squeezing him gently one more time
01:02:38This is a good scrap these two go back a long way back into
01:02:41British formula 3 when they were head-to-head for that championship barricado taking that formula 3 championship
01:02:48from david kothar
01:02:49But uh, you can't help but look at looking it's not very scientific
01:02:53But looking at it, there doesn't appear to be a big difference in the rear wing level
01:02:57Although there are many other aspects that are to do with drag of the car
01:03:01And uh, look how close look how hard barricado can punch out of those chicanes and make up that distance already before he gets
01:03:09Into the slipstream. It's not just kothar's car that's been struggling
01:03:12This is a rematch exactly of what happened before and once again barricado goes around the outside of the sax curve and he is
01:03:20Absolutely flying this afternoon rubens barricado a real point to prove the german fans here the ferrari
01:03:26Legions, they love it. Absolutely. Love it. Rubens barricado then up into fourth place
01:03:32Is here the ferrari?
01:03:34Legions, they love it. Absolutely. Love it. Rubens barricado then up into fourth place
01:03:40Still leading is montoya after 20 laps morale schumacher second 9.2 seconds behind his teammate michael schumacher now
01:03:4827 seconds a drift of the colombian and kothar still having terrible problems to get that car
01:03:54Pointing in a straight line out of the corners and barricado
01:03:58Fourth and kothar fifth here it is again
01:04:00And this is the third chicane. This is the beginning of the move and uh, kothar running
01:04:06Raggedly around the outside really desperately trying to find some grip and and uh barricado able to keep anita
01:04:12Tidy line just punch out of the corner and uh, well, this is a brave move here
01:04:16No doubt about it
01:04:17You're risking you're relying on the guy on the inside
01:04:20Not just giving you a little tag and sending you off into the gravel trap
01:04:24I remember you saying a while ago martin. This is a blind bend as well when you come into the state
01:04:27It's very difficult to see so you're committing yourself to a line around the outside of a corner. You can't see
01:04:32Yeah, you've been honking through the forest for best part of a minute and not an awful lot going on apart from the occasional
01:04:38big stop and all of a sudden
01:04:40The trees disappear and you come into this stadium area and that corner always catches you by surprise now
01:04:46It doesn't matter how many times you go around it
01:04:49And it is a difficult corner to see as somebody sort of almost switches the lights on and takes the trees away
01:04:55And the race leader montoya then coming up to lap 13th place
01:05:00Bernoldi in the orange arrows and he will do that easily then up into the first chicane
01:05:06And he will also be grimacing one more time. I'm lapping and arrows
01:05:09Please do not run into the back of me. I can win my first grand prix this afternoon
01:05:15Montoya coming here, of course off the back of two races where his teammate ralph schumacher
01:05:22refused to let him through
01:05:24French grand prix ralph schumacher said the radio wasn't working british grand prix
01:05:29He said i'm not moving over
01:05:31Patrick head of the williams team said well, maybe maybe we would have made a place up. We've seen again the
01:05:36Barrichello and I can tell you that the williams pit crew are out ready for one of the two drivers
01:05:41We don't know yet which one it'll be
01:05:43That's the ferrari boys celebrating barrichello's bravery, but we're about to have our first williams pit stop
01:05:51And it's coming up shortly on lap 21 a strange time to be making a pit stop really
01:05:56not neither fish nor foul neither a
01:05:59Two stopper nor a one stop it might just be that they've entered the window
01:06:02And I think they'll just get montoya in now get him out safely because he's so in control of this race. Yeah
01:06:07It strikes me you're better
01:06:10While the track is still they're still putting rubber down
01:06:13And uh is a little bit less green shortening up that first stint
01:06:16You've got a slightly lighter car on the start line as montoya does indeed take to the pit lane
01:06:21Slightly lighter car gives you a better
01:06:24Percentage chance of getting into the first corner at first and then you can still make sure you're on a one stopper
01:06:30And i'm assuming they will fuel that car now to the end of the grand prix
01:06:34Well, let's wait and see there should be about 11
01:06:37Possibly even 12 seconds with the fuel going in took a while to get the nozzle on though slightly delayed start
01:06:42To the refueling process the tire men are already only takes three seconds to put the tires on
01:06:47And they've got a problem with the fuel hose
01:06:49Williams have got a problem with the fuel hose. They've had to go for ralph schumacher's fuel hose
01:06:53This is a disaster for one pablo montoya time evaporating
01:06:57He's going to need eight nine ten seconds with the fuel and ralph schumacher leads the german grand prix
01:07:02And michael schumacher may well get montoya as well a catastrophe
01:07:07For the colombian he's out of the pit lane now and here comes the ferrari
01:07:13that's going to be nip and tuck when he gets around the corner, but of course michael then has the
01:07:18Momentum, but he also has to stop yet. So what a disaster
01:07:22for
01:07:23In fact, that's barrichello, isn't it? So he's he's uh, he's dropped about 15 seconds behind michael
01:07:29That still puts him in reasonable shape. Michael still has to stop yet. So, uh, well disaster for montoya
01:07:35Absolutely
01:07:36It normally takes about 26 seconds to make a pit stop here. That's how much time you have to take out of your race
01:07:42He's lost 41 seconds in that a disaster, but now he's got to fight back and that is going to be worth watching
01:07:50So we've got a schumacher one two now effectively ralph leads michael by 18.9 seconds as you can see
01:07:58and
01:07:58Surely that puts ralph in with an easy chance then to win the grand prix providing
01:08:03He doesn't have fuel rig problems or any other pit stop problems
01:08:07I still think montoya's got more than enough speed to beat michael schumacher this afternoon to take second, but that win now all of a sudden
01:08:14looking
01:08:15Highly unlikely you'd have to say well montoya had a seven second advantage over ralph schumacher
01:08:21Before he came into the pit stop. I worked out why he made the pit stop then it's because he was about to catch
01:08:26The trolley pannis bertie battle for 10th place and that would have taken him a long time to carve through
01:08:32That's why the lead drivers are coming in for their pit stops now and here comes the ferrari into the pit lane
01:08:39Michael schumacher
01:08:40Currently second then after montoya's drama. Can he regain the track?
01:08:46In front of montoya. We're looking for montoya. Can't see him at the moment. Yes
01:08:51He's coming past now. So montoya will stay ahead. He did have a healthy lead
01:08:56Of course here montoya does stay get ahead then of michael schumacher
01:09:02So he's into second place now on montoya. Michael schumacher should be able to rejoin without losing too much ground
01:09:08Pit stops always have such an influence on the grand prix, don't they because things can go wrong. There's always that possibility
01:09:14I think montoya's third place. He is definitely behind barrett kellow
01:09:18So montoya out into third place now ralph then the new leader has to make his stop this time around
01:09:27Of course barry kellow has to make a second pit stop. He's on a two-stop strategy
01:09:31Everybody else on one michael slows down. Michael schumacher has got problems. We saw at the first start
01:09:36He didn't have any gears in the car. He's only just made his pit stop and something has gone catastrophically wrong
01:09:41He's not pulling off the racetrack though, which is a strange move for him
01:09:45He obviously thinks he's going to get it restarted again
01:09:47I just didn't want to go into the grass. I think but it uh, clearly the car has found he's dumping the steering wheel
01:09:53He really should have pulled that out
01:09:56Out of the racing line as brother ralph then pits for his one and only scheduled stop of the afternoon
01:10:03Leader ralph schumacher into the pits. Let's see if it works out
01:10:07Okay for him
01:10:08They had the fuel hose on first time around but clearly no fuel was coming out of montoya's hose
01:10:13They had to go for the spear
01:10:16There's montoya entering the stadium now I can see he's behind rubens barrichello
01:10:20Ralph schumacher is going to regain the lead of this race
01:10:23It's all turned around. It's all going off here at hockenheim. Michael schumacher's out
01:10:28Mikahakinen is out ralph schumacher is now leading and and we've got bertie off again
01:10:33What an eventful afternoon he's having and that's term one where of course he's already been in those
01:10:38In that conveyor belt with the incident on the first start so bertie
01:10:43I think you'll see him coming through the picture just missed his braking point on the way
01:10:46It's very bumpy on the way into that corner
01:10:48It is easy sometimes for the chassis to just bottom out and you just miss the turn in basically
01:10:54And go straight into the gravel trap and there's michael schumacher waving out
01:10:59There's quite a big grandstand out there actually down at that first chicane
01:11:02But unusually then we're seeing a ferrari out of the grand prix
01:11:07Kultad will then be taking some points out of michael schumacher's world championship lead if
01:11:13He can get to the end of this grand prix
01:11:15David kultad is currently running in fourth position. Well, the gap is 37 37 points going into this grand prix
01:11:23If kultad takes the three points for fourth place that he's in at the moment
01:11:26That gap will go down to 34 with just five grand prix left jenson button exiting the pits
01:11:32He was in seventh when he made that pit stop. So button out now then and past him goes truly and
01:11:40panis, so
01:11:41Jenson button having as we said the best weekend so far of his benetton career
01:11:47Michael not looking too gutted
01:11:48Of course
01:11:49He has got that healthy 37 point lead and kultad has yet to get to the end of this grand prix
01:11:53What I want to see now is will montoya really put the hammer down?
01:11:58We know from what he's told us on the grid. We know from what frank williams has said
01:12:02They're they're allowed to race each other. Will that now be the case? Will he set about closing?
01:12:07Whatever the gap is we're going to find out what that gap is this time around now that they've settled down after their pit stops
01:12:14And uh, they're coming across the line and smoking. He's smoking smoking
01:12:18You can't see it on your screen has blown up right in front of us martin
01:12:22One montoya is out of the race unbelievable turn of fortune for the colombian driver
01:12:28Well, I mean how quickly can it go wrong for him?
01:12:30Just like in brazil leading the grand prix easily and through no fault of his own with fuel problems with an engine problem
01:12:38And remember he only ran this car for seven minutes this morning. He wanted to minimize the on track time
01:12:44Clearly there's an achilles heel. We've seen it now for ourselves
01:12:48It was a blue smoky sort of I would guess engine failure. I'd be surprised if it's not an engine failure
01:12:54That's the pit lane. That's why he saw the car flashing through despite having jumped over the wall there
01:12:58He's crossed the pit lane
01:13:00So ralph schumacher then leads from rubens barrichello by 10 seconds and kultad now up into third place
01:13:07Yes more points for david kultad more points beating into the lead of michael schumacher in the world championship
01:13:13It isn't over yet
01:13:14And one montoya had another terrific afternoon hasn't he through no fault of his own? He's out of this race
01:13:20Michael schumacher also out of the race just signing a few autographs as well
01:13:23His luck at this circuit has really been poor over the years only won once back in 1994
01:13:29You think of all the years that michael schumacher's been competitive. Here's another look martin at uh, montoya's demise
01:13:34I think it's our first look really, isn't it?
01:13:35We just happen to see him out of the window here of the commentary box smoking and that obviously is the right bank
01:13:41of the bmw v10
01:13:43letting go there and
01:13:45Good night, and thank you from juan. Pablo montoya
01:13:49Well, this is the circuit on which a nutter walked out last year and caused chaos in the grand prix. It's an eventful race
01:13:56It's been eventful for all of these men who are now reduced to the role of spectator luciano berti
01:14:02He's certainly had quite a time of it this afternoon michael schumacher mika hakkinen's on the sidelines pedro
01:14:07De la rosa nick heidfeld kimmy reichen and eddie irvine
01:14:11And of course one montoya 12 cars still running after 26 laps
01:14:16And of those cars that haven't stopped yet third place man coutard fourth place man fizzy keller
01:14:21Believe it or not in the bm in the uh, benetton. Sorry and jano truly seventh place, man
01:14:27We saw him spin off earlier on he did recover of course down in seventh at the moment
01:14:32He is also yet to stop the fuel this afternoon. They must be coming in quite soon indeed, of course martin
01:14:37This is one of these rare races where a lot of front runners drop out michael schumacher mika hakkinen montoya
01:14:43From the front running teams. It's an opportunity for the smaller teams to fill their boots get some points
01:14:47It looks like fizzy keller at the moment a lacey
01:14:50They're in the points fizzy keller fourth a lacey fifth. That's fizzy keller making his stops. It'll drop him out
01:14:56But he's not he's a quite a big
01:14:58Uh gap over villeneuve. He'll come back behind villeneuve. He may just be on the fringes of the points after this stop
01:15:04nevertheless
01:15:05An opportunity for all of these guys to get some much needed points
01:15:09McLaren mechanics in the pit lane two for this man david coulthard there you see it
01:15:14So coulthard in a solid third place. He was 29 seconds ahead of fizzy keller
01:15:19So should easily be able to retain that third place just down the road in front of him by six seconds
01:15:27Is barrichello second place man barrichello is also yet to stop but of course
01:15:31So has david coulthard and we've seen the ferrari is faster this afternoon for whatever reason than the mclaren
01:15:38So this is your leader then moving into lap 28 ralph schumacher
01:15:4410 seconds ahead of barrichello barrichello yet to stop again
01:15:48And coulthard in for his one and only stop of the afternoon quite late, isn't it?
01:15:52the end of lap
01:15:5427 for coulthard ted kravitz. Yes, james
01:15:57There were looks of resignation at williams when by montoya flew up
01:16:01So coulthard into the pit now had to be a set of scrubbed brick stones on him. Just looking at the tires
01:16:07Oh, no, the fuel tight hose does go off. It's an okay one stopper. The tires were in a terrible state though around 10 seconds
01:16:14I thought it seemed not too bad actually if that clock of eight eight and a bit seconds
01:16:18Um of fueling seemed pretty good for me for one step
01:16:21Of course
01:16:21He now has less distance to go to the end of the race than he has traveled so far
01:16:25So and is that smoke I just saw coming out of the back of coulthard's car as he
01:16:30May have been may not have been but I thought I saw just as we cut. Yes, it is
01:16:34Look coulthard. I think that's coulthard the other side of that bridge out of the race
01:16:39Yes, it is david coulthard out of the race so often happens james you make a pit stop
01:16:45The temperatures just rise above a critical point you hit the rev limiter to leave the pit lane and bang out
01:16:52It goes just like montoya well spotted absolutely amazing indeed. David coulthard is out of the race
01:16:58The front runners dropping like flies. We've only got two cars from what are considered to be established top three teams
01:17:05Still running in this german grand prix and they are ralph schumacher and rubens barrichello rubens in second place just 9.9 seconds
01:17:13Behind ralph, but of course rubens has to make another stop. Jacques villeneuve is enjoying the afternoon
01:17:18He's now up promoted to a podium position in third place
01:17:23Fissy keller up to fourth panis is up to fifth and jenson button
01:17:27For the first time this season is in a points paying position in sixth place
01:17:31Now that'll be critical for bennett on to score some points right now
01:17:35They're headed to be at the far end of the pit lane for next year when they reshuffle the pack
01:17:39Based on championship positions. That's the stricken
01:17:42McLaren of david coulthard and that is the european minardi of what must be
01:17:49uh
01:17:50No, it's marques marques is in the pit. So, uh
01:17:53Marques having a dismal afternoon to norbert. How then both of his cars. He's the mercedes-benz sporting boss
01:18:02Both of his cars now out of this grand prix
01:18:04And uh being the bmw people will be sitting on all of their crossed fingers and toes
01:18:10They would like to win this race or maybe for the second consecutive year
01:18:14This man rubens barrichello can win the german grand prix for his second grand prix victory ralph schumacher
01:18:20Leads from barrichello coulthard showing third on the computer, but now out of the race so that elevates
01:18:26Villeneuve into third fizzy keller is fourth panis is fifth
01:18:31Button is now sick. Alessi seventh truly eighth and bernaldion ninth verstappen rounding out the top ten
01:19:01So
01:19:31So
01:20:01So
01:20:32So
01:20:53Lap 30 of this 45 lap topsy-turvy utterly crazy german grand prix. We've seen it all this afternoon
01:21:00We've seen a first corner accident involving michael schumacher. We've seen a car rolling through the air. We've seen a restart
01:21:08Many of the front runners have dropped out some of them after pits up some of them with engine blow-ups
01:21:12And it now means there's this man juan montoya led until his pit stop dropped him down into third place a disastrous refueling for him
01:21:21Dropped him right down and then his engine blew up and it's meant that jack villeneuve in the bar
01:21:26Is up in a possible podium position
01:21:28It means that fizzy keller in the benetton had such a miserable season so far
01:21:32He's now in fourth place in a points paying position
01:21:34The second bar of panis is in fifth and jenson button is still holding on although in sixth place
01:21:39Although he's got jean alessi breathing all over him
01:21:42I think this is showing just how dominant michelans are around here the harder michelin tire
01:21:46Which the two benetton boys are using look at them
01:21:49They're right up with the bar hondas there
01:21:52They're fourth and sixth at the moment ba honda third and fifth
01:21:56And then well if eddie jordan went home from the british grand prix feeling very very unhappy
01:22:00How's he going to feel this afternoon?
01:22:02This is going to launch if they finish like this launch the bar honda team ahead of jordan in the world championship by at least
01:22:10two points and
01:22:12No sign of any points and then miyano truly in the sole remaining jordan back in eighth place
01:22:17So, uh, really poor old eddie having a dismal time of it at the moment, but no such problems for ralph. Schumacher
01:22:2511.3 seconds ahead of barrichello and like we know, uh for sure ralph. Schumacher will have been told that
01:22:33Barrichello has to come in one more time and that surprisingly is the bar team getting ready for another pit stop
01:22:41We're expecting panis in this time around so
01:22:45That's actually looking even better than for the benetton boys
01:22:48Indeed it is
01:22:49The bar team have got some work to do
01:22:52They're 12 points at the moment in the constructors championship to jordan's 15
01:22:56So they could just do with at least four points this afternoon to get them ahead
01:23:00Of the jordan team would put them up into fifth place in the world championship. Amazingly
01:23:05Both those two teams are still behind sauber
01:23:08With that fantastic season that's ever been having in fourth place so far
01:23:12And benetton looking as though they might well have a real cash cow of an afternoon
01:23:18here at hockenheim remember
01:23:201997 when gerhard berger made his great comeback after injury in the benetton and won this race
01:23:26for the benetton team
01:23:28It's been a good track for them over the years michael schumacher's won here for them
01:23:32And maybe they're going to get some big points today. Here's panis though in the pits
01:23:35Yeah, he was giving it plenty on the way into the pit lane as well
01:23:37wasn't he panis knowing that he's got to
01:23:40Stop and get back out and try and catch those benettons if he wants to get a decent points all this afternoon
01:23:45As you said earlier on james
01:23:47This is payday for the midfield and lesser teams when the big boys have a bad day out
01:23:52Then this you must maximize these days
01:23:54This is where you score your points and where you get all of the tv money etc for the following year in
01:24:00Several millions of dollars and barack. Hello's crew waiting for him. Then he comes out of second place
01:24:06He is a full 59 seconds ahead of third place man villner
01:24:11So unless there's any major dramas, of course rubens will
01:24:16Emerge clearly in second place, but also clearly a long way behind the leader ralph schumacher rather annoyingly
01:24:23He's going to have to lap the two arrows once again. They've gone past us
01:24:27So he's got like there's a delay here fuel hose isn't even on fuel hose had to go back on again, didn't it?
01:24:32so similar circumstances to
01:24:36Similar circumstances then to montoya, but that's still not going to compromise his second place with regard to third
01:24:42But just puts him even further behind of course ralph schumacher. What a breathless afternoon
01:24:47We've had martin here the general gromfrey just shows you you can never take anything for granted in this sport
01:24:51Can you someone looks like they're sailing off into the distance and everything next thing, you know
01:24:55They have a problem in the pit stop the fuel hose won't go on the engine blows up
01:24:58They catch a back marker and the whole picture just turns around
01:25:02it's
01:25:03It always I find it curious look they're looking at the fuel rig
01:25:07I mean that team like all of the teams will spend uh, you know
01:25:10Several hundred million dollars the key teams any of the big teams and then something as silly as a fuel hose will not work
01:25:16But they are supplied
01:25:18By a company called intertechnique. They are delivered to the teams
01:25:22The teams are allowed to clean them and check the filters and that sort of thing
01:25:26But it is carefully controlled the flow rate. Otherwise, you'd have a big advantage during the grand prix if you
01:25:31Made your machine deliver its fuel much faster than
01:25:35Standard and quite clearly then some gremlins in those refueling rigs that makes a bit of a mockery of the situation
01:25:44Indeed, it does new rigs this season
01:25:46And there were some complaints about them and testing of them in before the season started a few teams had some problems
01:25:53We haven't seen those problems so far
01:25:56In the 11 grand prixs, but in round 12, we've certainly seen plenty of problems
01:26:00On the intertechnique rigs. Let's just take you through then the cars still running on lap 33
01:26:06We look at the two arrows of bernaldi and verstappen running line of stern
01:26:10We have ralph schumacher leading by 14 and a half seconds from rubens barrichello
01:26:14Jack villeneuve is third
01:26:16And fisichella fourth button fifth
01:26:19Alessi is sixth
01:26:21Pannis is seventh
01:26:22Trulli eighth bernaldi ninth
01:26:25Verstappen tenth and alonso the last classified runner one lap down
01:26:30In 11th place and in fact the margin between ralph schumacher and barrichello now has gone through on the computer
01:26:35Allowing for barrichello's lost time in that pit stop
01:26:38It's now 47.7 seconds
01:26:40So ralph schumacher with 12 laps to go can afford to just take it a little bit easy
01:26:45We've seen one bmw engine blow up this afternoon
01:26:49We don't want to see another one michael having a quiet sunday afternoon chat
01:26:53They'll be getting the sandwiches out next and the black coffee won't be having a bit of a perhaps having a game of cards
01:26:58Yeah, those marshals can dine off that for a long time can't they the day that michael stopped us and had a chat with us
01:27:03but
01:27:04Michael would be mighty relieved. Kulthar has dropped out of the race too. Of course. He was heading for probably four points and
01:27:12Would have kept the championship at least
01:27:15Well, it's still alive because there's still mathematically a chance and as michael would be only too aware as he was heading for the barriers
01:27:20In monza last week having a huge accident during testing that it can turn around so quickly
01:27:25But of course i'd needed those four points today
01:27:28He certainly did because we now have just five races to go in this year's world championship, and he's still
01:27:3537 points behind the german which means he really has got to
01:27:39Score maximum points at every single race for the remainder of the season. You just have to say
01:27:44But with the pace we've seen this weekend
01:27:47Uh from the williams team that is highly unlikely louise goodman's with david. Yes. I am indeed david
01:27:52It's really turning into a race of attrition
01:27:53Do you take any consolation from the fact that michael's gone out as well?
01:27:57Not really. No, i'm not
01:27:58I'm more interested in me finishing the race. First of all, it's obviously very disappointed wasn't particularly quick in the race
01:28:03Anyway, so much oversteer. I think I had enough for the whole grid
01:28:07and I was just trying to keep the car on the island and obviously tried hard to uh,
01:28:12Battle with rubens for the first half of the lap and then again
01:28:15Laterally, but uh just weren't on the pace today not been a good weekend at all for you really has it?
01:28:19No, it's been been very difficult weekend balance of the car
01:28:22Has been somewhere else and we haven't been able to achieve it. Um, and then
01:28:26Obviously I was a bit worried when I saw me can't have the problem because we've been pretty reliable all year
01:28:31But obviously this is a unique circuit and after the pit stop it was obviously just too much for it. Thanks
01:28:38I'm traveling home with david tonight. That's going to be a bit of a grim plane journey
01:28:42I think that's going to be a bit of misery because that's not the result he needed today. But um,
01:28:47What can you do really?
01:28:48You can only press the throttle pedal and keep turning the steering wheel and if it won't keep running
01:28:52Not so much you can do about it. But third place man villeneuve then he is currently 24 seconds behind barrichello now
01:28:59That pops up on screen as i'm talking about it because of course barrichello had a very very slow pit stop
01:29:05So villeneuve in a podium position
01:29:12Good afternoon for a number of these smaller teams
01:29:17Villeneuve holding on in third place
01:29:19That'll be his second third place of the year back at the spanish grand prix villeneuve
01:29:23Up on the podium once again, and of course he's just recommitted hasn't he to bar for next year. Both drivers are staying at bar. So
01:29:32Currently they're running third and pannis with that second stop of his has dropped down to seventh place
01:29:37There's another side to this as well martin, which is bmw williams are chasing mclaren in the constructors championship 20 points
01:29:45Mclaren were ahead of them in second place before this race
01:29:48This will be 10 for ralph if he can get to the finish and that will bring that margin right down there
01:29:52frank williams and patrick had a
01:29:53Determined to get second place in the constructor this year and I know that ralph schumacher
01:29:57Is gunning for david coulthard in the drivers championship as well
01:30:01The gap between them was 13 points as we see. Yano trulli pulling out of eighth place in the race the gap between them
01:30:07Ralph schumacher and david coulthard was 16 points going into today's race
01:30:12It'll be down to just six with five races to go
01:30:14So mclaren certainly can't eight take anything for granted lap 35
01:30:18Then ralph schumacher leading rubens barrichello
01:30:21Villeneuve holding on in third place ahead of fisikella fourth button fifth and alaci in sixth place
01:30:41So
01:31:11So
01:31:41So
01:32:11So
01:32:13So
01:32:15So
01:32:17So
01:32:40That's remaining in the german grand prix james allen and martin brundle with you a very happy looking patrick head
01:32:4750 happy possibly
01:32:49Their man ralph schumacher leading this race looking very comfortable with a 49 second lead
01:32:54The 50 of him which will be unhappy is the one which has been reflecting
01:32:58On the fortunes of one pablo montoya who led this motor race
01:33:01Looked like he was going to win it and then a sequence of events first a poor fuel stop
01:33:05And then an engine blow up put him out of contention
01:33:11And louise goodman can tell us a bit about montoya's situation
01:33:14Yeah, he was indeed 100% unhappy as you uh, as you would imagine
01:33:17He has actually left the circuit already without speaking to any of the journalists
01:33:21He did have a quick word with ann bradshaw the team press officer
01:33:23None of it apparently repeatable on the family show
01:33:26So I think you can judge your own conclusions from that but I can confirm it was an engine problem that put him out of
01:33:30the race
01:33:31So montoya then joining the other
01:33:3412 people that are currently out of this grand prix truly then has dropped
01:33:38There's 10 runners truly out engine problem. It looked like kultar engine problem marquez stopped in the pits montoya engine problem
01:33:46Michael schumacher looked like electronic or fuel to me on the side of the road
01:33:50Luciano berti went off into the barriers in turn one
01:33:54Reikinen some kind of problem when he was in the pit
01:33:57Same with irvine dropped out of the race after or in a pit stop hackanan
01:34:01Fluid pouring out of a radiator on the left-hand side of the car
01:34:06azonta
01:34:07What happened to him? That's a long time ago. Hyde felt knocked out of the race when de la rosa the first retiree
01:34:15Smashed into the back of him at the first chicane of the second part of the race
01:34:19There was a restart because there was a big accident michael schumacher's ferrari lost drive
01:34:24Heading down to turn one of the first start and was slammed into the back of by luciano berti
01:34:30Debris all over the racetrack. They had to restart this grand prix has been incident packed afternoon plenty
01:34:37for the photographers the journalists and the tv crews around here to report home about the headlines tomorrow will scream of
01:34:44Cars up in the air of leaders out of the race. It's been a very eventful german grand prix martin
01:34:51I have to ask you as we have just five or six laps to go a difficult one this I think imagine today
01:34:55Who is your driver of the day in the german grand prix? That's got to be montoya a great pole position
01:35:01he's certainly I think
01:35:03Lifted himself on a new level this weekend for his grand prix career and was just easily leading the race
01:35:09Wasn't he the problems he had were absolutely no fault of his own. So montoya surely the driver of the day
01:35:15It's an indication of just how much montoya has got his act together this season
01:35:19That in the four races that you and I have commentated on together. He's been your driver of the day three times
01:35:23Is that right? Yeah, that's interesting. But um, you know
01:35:27Maybe montoya stopped the silliness of having fights with villeneuve and and making unnecessary comments
01:35:33Maybe he's realized that these guys that are winning grand prix's and winning world championships are so
01:35:38Focused they don't dilute their effort in any way
01:35:41They just focus on what they need to do and the people around them to get the performance
01:35:47They need and I think there's a comfort new confidence level in montoya and ted is down
01:35:53Yes, martin, it really is incredible how much of a car breaker this circuit is but it is a sign
01:35:57I think of how stressed the cars and the engines are these days. It is ironic
01:36:02Therefore the benettons who they've got some of the least power in the pit lane with that rena are currently fourth and fifth
01:36:08They can just keep going all afternoon. I can tell you at williams ralph has just had a pit board
01:36:13Which just says oil pump oil pump so there's still five laps for something to go wrong with that williams
01:36:19Yes, yeah, that'll be topping up a tank somewhere. They've got telemetry on the car. The pits will know
01:36:25any
01:36:26Any levels fluid levels on the car that's oil water hydraulic pressure, whatever
01:36:31And quite clearly they want him to top something up or put some kind of auxiliary
01:36:36pump on
01:36:37You're looking at the battle and it is a battle for fifth place between jenson button
01:36:42And jean alessi button doing extremely well to keep the frenchman behind him
01:36:46We know how hard jean likes to charge. He's had points already this season. He's hungry for more
01:36:52Button desperate to get as many points as he possibly can
01:36:54It's been one of them been a very barren season for him
01:36:56His teammate fisikella is seven seconds ahead of him and he would dearly love to just keep exactly where he is now for these remaining
01:37:03five races five laps
01:37:06here at hockenheim, that's
01:37:08Olivier pannis who's dropped down to seventh place as a result of his second pit stop martin
01:37:13Where do the teams go from here?
01:37:15We've we've it's been a bit of a watershed race this for a lot of people hasn't it?
01:37:18This german grand prix certainly from a championship point of view. Kulthar's really got a mountain to climb williams look like they're
01:37:24Really there for the remainder of the season mclaren. They've just not been at the races all weekend
01:37:28Where where do they all go from here?
01:37:29Do you think it's a tough call here james because they've got to decide whether they're going to put all of their energy and focus
01:37:34into next year's car now already the the most of the
01:37:38Key teams will have those pending and underway to a large extent
01:37:43So, you know, where do you put your resources?
01:37:45Do you put them into a season that's slipping away from you or do you put them all into next year's car?
01:37:51Certainly mclaren do have a lot of work to do and I think it has to be said that mercedes-benz engine
01:37:57Is not as powerful as it needs to be does not allow them to run the downforce
01:38:01They have to run ferrari
01:38:03Appear to have a good all-round package decent reliability
01:38:07Although michael schumacher parked on the side of the racetrack, of course, but williams bmw. They must be
01:38:13Extremely happy. We're heading towards monza spa
01:38:17Suzuka high high downforce or high speed circuits where you need a lot of power
01:38:23And they do seem to have a great package underneath them
01:38:26The fastest speed hit this afternoon has been
01:38:29357 kilometers an hour riccardo zonto managed that obviously running very low wing on that jordan honda
01:38:36357 kilometers an hour. What's that?
01:38:39225 miles an hour roughly. I don't know to be honest
01:38:42Um zonto just remembered why he went out
01:38:44He was just trying to pass an arrows wasn't he tagged his he said he was alongside him
01:38:49but actually tagged his nose on the right rear wheel of an arrows and then
01:38:55Pitted for a new nose and then had to pit again. So obviously some kind of suspension damage I would imagine
01:39:00So let's talk a little bit about ralph schumacher with five laps to go. Is he going to win his third grand prix?
01:39:07Of the season he's been in formula one now for five years. This is when he's really beginning to come into his own
01:39:13He's hitting his best form
01:39:15With the bmw williams team 77 grand prix's in his young career
01:39:20And he started four times this year from the front row had a big crash on friday lost an awful lot of track time
01:39:26He's done well to bounce back from that
01:39:29You have to say he wouldn't be in this position
01:39:31Had it not been for the misfortune of his teammate one montoya for the second grand prix
01:39:36Of this 2001 season montoya been the dominant driver led as he did in brazil and just like in brazil bad luck
01:39:44Has put him out
01:39:46There it was an accident with the stappan here
01:39:49It was a refueling problem and then an engine blow up
01:39:53Nevertheless ralph schumacher will take the points whichever way they come because he's got just four laps to go
01:39:58and this is the ongoing battle between button and alaci and
01:40:02Button fans i'm afraid to tell you that alaci's got the gap down now to under a second
01:40:07And jenson's gonna have to be right on his game to keep
01:40:11This man behind him. Have you noticed how high button sits in the cockpit compared to alaci? They're completely different driving positions
01:40:16Yes, he always has actually I noticed that in the williams last year
01:40:18I mean, he's a taller driver than alaci but not to that extent. I think obviously jenson likes a better view
01:40:24Of close to the front of the car for maybe being more accurate on the curves. Jenson is a very smooth driver
01:40:31I think that's to a certain extent why this benetton hasn't necessarily suited him this year
01:40:36he needs a car that needs a very gentle hand on it and
01:40:40He doesn't tend to pick them up by the scruff of the neck and maybe that's what this car's needed earlier on in the season
01:40:46button as you point out very much under pressure you can almost
01:40:50If there was a little window in the front of his crash
01:40:52I mean for sure you'd see the teeth of jean alaci gritted trying to catch that benetton
01:40:57So he's already in the points as a lazy and sick, but uh, he would like two points
01:41:01I'm sure for his third point scoring race of the season. I'm sure when you're driving these things martin
01:41:06You're not aware of what you're doing. You're just concentrating on driving. Do you ever catch yourself sort of snarling or ever catch yourself?
01:41:12Doing anything strange inside the crash and we're breathing very hard or anything like that in situations like this
01:41:17Oh, you talk to yourself nearly all the time. And uh, yeah, I there's michael listening to uh,
01:41:22Well, I don't know. I'm assuming it's the race. It certainly won't be cricket will it or whatever but
01:41:27Sometimes you get out at the end of a grand prix and your jaws ache because you've clenched your teeth
01:41:31Certainly in monte carlo where you're concentrating and working so hard and your jaws actually hurt
01:41:37Interesting, you should say that my dentist believes that the reason david koulthard's cheeks are the shape
01:41:41They are is because he grinds his teeth too much. I don't know if that's true or not
01:41:44We'll have to take it up with him sometime
01:41:45Here's a nice super slow-mo of ralph schumacher locking up his left front tire and those michelin tires
01:41:51Martin have been the story really of this weekend, haven't they?
01:41:54Yes, indeed. You'd think that uh, the wide front of michelin would hurt the straight line speed
01:41:58I remember when we used to come here with a tirrell, uh with a normally aspirated engine
01:42:03We used to try and pump the front tires up to reduce the bulge at the bottom of anything for a bit less frontal area
01:42:10and a narrower front tire tirrell even
01:42:13tried I think uh
01:42:15Front wheels front tires on the rear at one point as a as an experiment
01:42:19To see if they could get down these straights faster with less frontal area, but it doesn't seem to have hurt
01:42:24This bmw is I think aerodynamics have moved on an awful long way in that time and the drag really
01:42:30is lessened and minimized by some very clever work around the front wing and
01:42:36The barge boards and how they control the air flowing over the car from the very tip of the nose
01:42:45More points on the horizon for jean lacey
01:42:49He's had a good
01:42:52Season center part of the season got a point in monaco and two points in canada. That's the two arrows cars
01:42:58They've only got one point so far this season. They're not going to get anything today
01:43:01They've been together pretty much the whole race
01:43:03And ricky bernaldi has been in front of joss verstappen his more experienced teammate
01:43:08Bernaldi extremely lucky still to be in this race
01:43:10He had luciano berti vaulting over the top of him at the first stop
01:43:13But it looks like verstappen is now putting some moves on bernaldi. He wants to get past him
01:43:18You can see bernaldi getting past verstappen here
01:43:21Yeah, it's bernaldi down into the third chicane. Does he make the move at stick?
01:43:25We assume he did because later on we saw him ahead of verstappen
01:43:29So that's a a really good scrap for eighth and ninth. They're over a lap behind unfortunately
01:43:35So they're they're probably best part of five miles behind the leader in this race. Such is the pace of
01:43:42Ralph schumacher staggering, isn't it? He's backed off a bit now, though
01:43:46He's only got two laps to go. In fact, he's only got one lap to go
01:43:49At the end of this one ralph schumacher
01:43:52And he's lap pace has dropped off into the one minute
01:43:5647s
01:43:57As ribbons barrichello, he'll be reasonably pleased with his afternoon's work started this race sixth on the grid managed to get himself up into second place
01:44:07And uh jack villeneuve will be happy as well. He qualified outside the top 10
01:44:11And it looks like he's on his way to second podium of the season for the british american racing team
01:44:16They'll go away with their heads held high. They will
01:44:19not
01:44:20overtake jordan
01:44:22In yes, they will overtake jordan if he gets four points
01:44:24Yes, they'll move into fifth place the constructors bar ahead of jordan if he finishes there and look at button now
01:44:31He's moved up behind fizzy keller to just eight tenths of a second whether fizzy keller was in traffic or made a mistake
01:44:38I don't know but button then
01:44:41suddenly in sight of fourth place man fizzy keller and a lacey relentlessly
01:44:47Charging them down fighting hard with the steering wheel very aggressive style. John a lacey almost unnecessarily aggressive
01:44:55but
01:44:56There then fourth fifth and sixth
01:44:58But ralph schumacher has left turn one for the final time of this grand prix and still around there
01:45:05At the third chicane, he's got the whole stadium to go yet his second place man barrichello
01:45:1050 seconds behind although of course that's not all on track performance barrichello lost a good 20 seconds
01:45:17When the refueling rig did not function properly. Yes, indeed
01:45:20And he started a long way behind on the grid as well and he was on a two-stop strategy
01:45:23So he's he's done well this afternoon rubens barrichello to give ferrari something to take away from here
01:45:29They won't be too unhappy though because their main rival in the championship david korthal is going to go away empty-handed
01:45:35And that really gives michael schumacher a very comfortable position 37 points
01:45:39He is in front with five grand prix's to go but today has proved I think that even though the championship looks like
01:45:45It's heading michael schumacher's way
01:45:47We still have some extremely exciting grand prix racing in front of us in the remainder of this season
01:45:51Anything can happen in the remaining races williams look like they're strong. They're going to fight back and it's going to be great
01:45:58I'm sure between now and the end of the season david korthal was fighting to catch up with michael schumacher
01:46:05Now he's fighting to fend off ralph schumacher as you said earlier
01:46:08He'll be just six points behind second place in the championship man
01:46:12David korthal if he completes this lap and collects the full 10 points this afternoon just the stadium to go then with some williams
01:46:20Mitchell in bmw circuits like monza suzuka and spa coming up korthal is going to have to be at his very best
01:46:26To keep them behind him. It's been about williams bmw all weekend
01:46:31It was about montoya in qualifying and for the first 20 odd laps this afternoon
01:46:35It was also about the colombian
01:46:37But right now it's about ralph schumacher the 25 year old younger brother of the local hero wins his third grand prix
01:46:45Of the 2001 season well done to everybody at michelin williams and bmw and well done to ralph schumacher
01:46:52A very solid drive from second place on the grid and when it counted he was there to pick up the pieces
01:46:59And rubens barricado will come around in second place
01:47:01There's michael schumacher managing even a smile because his younger brother has won yet again
01:47:06He said to me actually michael the other week that it gives him enormous pleasure when his brother wins
01:47:10Even though sometimes it means he doesn't win himself. I think he's genuine about that too
01:47:15by and large so
01:47:17Can you imagine how it must feel you're 26 years old?
01:47:19You're just winning your home grand prix in front of this
01:47:23Magnificent amphitheater and mostly ferrari flags waving it has to be said and that's why there's such a din as second place man
01:47:31Barrichello crosses the line his strategy this afternoon was very much to get him on the podium
01:47:36It's not one to win the race with and that's certainly mission accomplished in that respect then
01:47:42So this is villeneuve who's just 2.1 seconds ahead of fizzy keller and butternan
01:47:48Over the line fifth alasi sixth. They're the final point scorers and there was a total of
01:47:552.9 seconds between the lot of them. Yes, very close indeed
01:48:00And there is still the championship leader. Michael schumacher on 84 points. Kulthard has 47 ralph. Schumacher
01:48:07Goes the wrong way
01:48:09Over the chicane and make sure he doesn't collide with ricky bernalder on his way out
01:48:13but kulthard 47 points and
01:48:16Ralph schumacher has overtaken rubens barrichello now with this victory
01:48:20He moves up into third place in the championship six points behind. There's a great sight, isn't it? Sportsman to the last
01:48:27Likes to see his brother do well and the encouragement he gave him as a youth when he was carting
01:48:33It's been a reasonable day for the schumacher family
01:48:36And in the constructors championship ferrari looking pretty imperious got more than twice the points of mclaren in second place
01:48:44And williams in third sauber fourth bar have jumped in front of jordan, but a very happy man. No doubt. It's sir. Frank williams
01:48:50He's talking now with ted kravitz frank. Congratulations one went bang, but one survived
01:48:55One had a problem
01:48:57After a very sensible race when it became clear. He was almost unstoppable
01:49:03It was very fine performance by the team and by bmw quite remarkable really were you surprised?
01:49:08I mean, what did you expect it coming here to circuit that suited your car so much?
01:49:12Well from the more of the weekend
01:49:15Qualifying and from the morning warm-up. We thought we'd
01:49:17probably ease away from the rest of the
01:49:20Field not as much as we we didn't imagine why but would disappear that quickly
01:49:25But um, the only real worry is to finish the race. It's they use 73 percent full throttle around the circuit
01:49:31It's very hard work for any engine. So it's the third win of the year. Why not one more at monza, right?
01:49:36Well, I when I was brought up I was told never ever be greedy. It always catches you out, but one will be very nice
01:49:43Thanks, frank
01:49:45A nice reply there from sir. Frank williams. He must be very happy martin, but he's really back in business now, isn't he?
01:49:50Yeah, they are
01:49:51It's taken a while hasn't it when that flywheel starts slowing down and all of the teams they usually take three or four seasons to
01:49:58Start turning it around and building it back up again, but they have some momentum now. There's no doubt about that
01:50:04It's a home win
01:50:06It's a home win for ralph schumacher. No doubt about that either
01:50:10And isn't he happy that's his physio?
01:50:12And the rest of the team congratulating him
01:50:15There'll be some kind of party tonight. I would imagine willie weber there. You just saw the manager of both schumacher brothers
01:50:21Hasn't he done? Well managed to make himself a fortune former hotelier
01:50:26Decided when he discovered michael schumacher. He probably didn't need to be in the hotel business anymore
01:50:30And now he's discovered ralph as well
01:50:32He certainly will never be making any room service again in the future ralph schumacher
01:50:37Monaco
01:50:39Wins his third grand prix of the season. There's rubens barrichello coming in
01:50:43He's had a decent afternoon as well the right strategy as you said martin
01:50:47for the ferrari team
01:50:50And rubens picking up another six points. He's really been a regular podium visitor this season
01:50:55Adding them to his third place the australian grand prix second at malaysia third in san marino third in austria second in monaco
01:51:04Third in france and third in britain and again second today pretty consistent form from a man who quite often gets written off as being
01:51:11the nearly manry
01:51:13Yes, he won this race. Of course last year. We saw him
01:51:15Sobbing his eyes out on the podium with the brazilian flag and remembering it in senna and it was a great moment for
01:51:22rubens barrichello and
01:51:25brazilian motorsport in general, but
01:51:28I think he'd be moderately pleased with today villeneuve
01:51:31I think will be extremely pleased with his second podium of the year for bar a team that he is
01:51:38More involved in than is normal with the driver
01:51:41He is a fundamental part of bar and normally you're just a an em and a sort of an employee
01:51:47Type situation and I think jack is has more of a say in the management of bar than most drivers do
01:51:55I just saw fissi keller there going through the shop. There's jensen button got his first points of the season for fifth place
01:52:02So that's five world championship points in one afternoon for benetton
01:52:07it's been a long long time coming for this team, but
01:52:11Five points takes them puts them nicely into the championship
01:52:14Yeah, it does puts them into seventh place and and ahead amazingly of jaguar. I mean
01:52:19Irvine was having a good run today, wasn't he but jaguar down there were just five points
01:52:24To their name at the moment, uh not working out for them. Michael schumacher has made it back to the pits
01:52:30He'll want to see the podium procedure with his brother and see his brother before he goes up onto the podium
01:52:35of course all good tv i'm sure michael, uh
01:52:40looking
01:52:41I mean michael's not going to be too upset as he wasn't going to win the race
01:52:44So ralph has and kultad scores no points
01:52:47So that's why michael's got a bit of a spring in his step by and large. You see the championship situation
01:52:54Going down through to 18th place only 22 drivers in formula one
01:52:59which means that
01:53:00four
01:53:01Have yet to score a point pretty good
01:53:03Uh knockings for uh for everybody. Everybody's been collecting some points throughout the season
01:53:07It's spread out fairly evenly in the lower orders. It's not quite as simple as that because obviously you've got zonta in now replacing
01:53:13Frenton that you end up usually with more than
01:53:16That quota more than the the grid numbers by the end of the season
01:53:20but only 10 finished today 10 cars over the line and
01:53:2512 cars not making it to the end of one of the hardest fastest but shortest grand prix's of the year time-wise
01:53:34It's been a very eventful afternoon first corner accidents
01:53:38restarts
01:53:39Leaders dropping out front runners dropping out. We lost mika hakkanen. We lost michael schumacher
01:53:44The mechanical failure we lost david koulthard as well and one montoya the engine blow up
01:53:50Taking nothing away though from ralph schumacher
01:53:52There's dr
01:53:53Mario tyson the man who's done so much to make this bmw engine what it is. It's amazing really martin
01:53:59this is only their second year back in formula one last time they were here was
01:54:03It was the dark ages. It was the turbo era. There's michael schumacher
01:54:07Going out to celebrate his brother's success. I wonder if ralph actually noticed him there he is though
01:54:12They love a hometown victory a hundred thousand air horn blowing flag waving germans
01:54:19Most of them are waving red ferrari flags
01:54:21But there are more and more waving ralph schumacher williams blue flags and the german national anthem. We will hear
01:54:48So
01:55:19So
01:55:34It's a story that's sweeping the nation the younger brother comes good don't they love it
01:55:48So
01:56:19So
01:56:34So ralph schumacher wins his third grand prix of the season nice to see that jacques villeneuve has given up the bilbo baggins look and
01:56:39Has become more clean cut and he's shaved his beard off got a nice haircut. What's becoming of him?
01:56:44He's got a new 19 year old ballerina girlfriend from new york, I think that might be something to do with it apparently
01:56:50But uh, it's nice to see three different chassis three different engines on the grid two different tire suppliers amongst those
01:56:57Three men standing on the podium formula one then in rude health at the moment. No doubt about it
01:57:04certainly is
01:57:05rubens barrichello
01:57:07Yet to find the top spot of the podium in 2001
01:57:11One
01:57:12He's certainly been alongside enough times this season five races to go though. He still could do it
01:57:18There is the clean cut clean living boy himself
01:57:22jacques villeneuve
01:57:24Nice to see him back up there many of us regret that he's been in the boonies since his 97 world championship victory
01:57:33So the champagne ceremony begins it's been a wonderful afternoon of motor racing high event and high drama
01:57:40Third win of the season for ralph schumacher and a few more I fancy before this season is over
01:57:54Thank you james
01:57:56Thanks to martin brundle
01:57:58As well ralph schumacher a big victory for him his first podium actually in the german grand prix only the strong survive around here 10
01:58:05Finishes a little pat on the back to host broadcaster rtl for the quality of their coverage williams putting the squeeze on
