00:00:00Come back to the a1 ring. It's 20 degrees for race six of f1
00:00:052001 the austrian grand prix don't forget after the action the result of our competition plus
00:00:10Ross kent's dramas as a jordan mechanic, but now we join martin brundle and murray walker beautiful day for it murray
00:00:17Absolutely sensational day jim and this wonderful scenery all around us
00:00:22It is the most picturesque grand prix circuit in the world without a doubt now
00:00:26You've had the scene set superbly for you by martin
00:00:29I'm going to repeat the key points because so very often at this austrian grand prix the opening first two
00:00:36Corners have in effect settled the race last year
00:00:39You've seen the footage of michael schumacher being punted off by zonta his teammate rubens barrichello
00:00:46Being hit for by jano trulli. Well, they come surging up to that first corner here uphill
00:00:52You can see it's the bottom left corner on the graphic you're looking at
00:00:56They tackled it at about 80 miles an hour
00:00:58But there's going to be a solid lump of 22 of them and then there's the long climb up to turn two
00:01:04Which they reach some?
00:01:06185 miles an hour rubens barrichello their fourth on the grid now michael schumacher as is his way today
00:01:14Was last out of the garage. Everybody was on the grid and at quarter to the hour
00:01:20Just before the last possible moment he could leave the garage
00:01:23He did so rolled out onto the grid
00:01:26Everybody melted away as the ferrari cut its way along the tarmac into that pole position
00:01:33It's the first time that michael schumacher has been on the front row of the grid in austria
00:01:38He's never been higher than fourth on the grid before and this is the only grand prix race as you look at him now
00:01:44But he has not won
00:01:46Is he going to do it today? Well
00:01:48He's won in australia, he's won in malaysia
00:01:52He's won, of course in spain
00:01:55And he's got these row of pole positions
00:01:58Only one pole position this year has been denied him and that was david kuhlfeldt the san marino grand prix
00:02:05now
00:02:06What a what a struggle mclaren have got seventh and eighth on the grid and in front of david kuhlfeldt
00:02:13There is nick heidfeldt. Nobody's mentioned heidfeldt yet today
00:02:16The young german driver in the sauber very much the team of the season as far as i'm concerned
00:02:22superb effort with their ferrari engines to be up in
00:02:26Sixth position for heidfeldt and ninth position for newcomer kimmy reichmann
00:02:30So kuhlfeldt and hackinton have got heidfeldt and trulli and barry keller and schumacher and montoya to pass
00:02:37Before they can get to grips with michael schumacher
00:02:40Assuming and what a big assuming it is he gets around the first corner and clears off. What do you think?
00:02:46Michael had a bit of a cloudy face as he came to the grid
00:02:49A few dignitaries standing in the way of his grid slot
00:02:52He didn't look too happy at all when I was down there mary just before
00:02:56Walking along the grid and he's really got a job on his hands this afternoon to fight off
00:03:01Those bmw williams he knows they've got five or six kilometers
00:03:05Straight line speed advantage on him plus when they're in his slipstream
00:03:08It could be as high as 10ks and I think montoya knows that if he gets away reasonably well
00:03:13And of course, they've got launch control now. They should all get away
00:03:16Quite well the inside of the track very very dirty saw one or two of the runners
00:03:21Thinking ahead and trying to clean up that side of the grid this morning during the warm-up fastest
00:03:26Of course hackinnon and second kuhlfeldt
00:03:29Every other session this weekend and mclaren has been fastest up until when it really mattered in qualifying
00:03:34They got the setup wrong. They didn't react fast enough. They hit traffic. It was windy
00:03:39It was dusty and they've given themselves quite a headache for the afternoon
00:03:42If michael schumacher can get away early on in this race, I think then he could be
00:03:48Extending his world championship advantage today. So michael knows the early stage of this race are absolutely critical
00:03:55Yeah
00:03:56As you look at ralph schumacher ahead of him on the grid is his teammate
00:04:00Juan pablo montoya and montoya is fearless the colombian
00:04:05He's won in america has been champion of america. He's won the indy 500
00:04:10And you look at jano trulli and now at uh, pablo montoya himself 22 cars on the grid
00:04:17jenson button right at the back in the benetton and his teammate
00:04:21Fisichella in front of him the benettons are still climbing that massive mountain
00:04:25taso marquez in the european minardi is 22nd on the grid at any moment now the
00:04:32Parade lap the formation lap will begin now. There are 71 laps in this race
00:04:37It's a short track 2.7 miles long and away they go. Talk us around martin
00:04:43Yes, no, they don't want to use the launch control too much off the grid
00:04:46They want to lay two black lines of as much rubber as they can get down to give themselves a better chance next time around
00:04:52That's a very steep hill as I hope you can see on the grid walk up there into turn one means you can break
00:04:58Super super late, but it's dirty on the inside
00:05:01Along sweeping straight then down towards turn two, which has another uphill arrival zone
00:05:07And again, this does tend to be an overtaking slot
00:05:11But the it's got to be a willing party that you're overtaking into there two cars cannot get around there safely
00:05:17At the same time they almost always end in tears
00:05:20Towards how the old track used to be now just for a little while as they head down
00:05:25Into turn three tricky corner the cars always look quite slow and clumsy through there a bit of off camber
00:05:31The track falls away from you
00:05:33and
00:05:34Cutting back now to the mclaren mercedes-benz pit
00:05:38Hopefully we'll go back on track
00:05:40Yes, we will as they head through turn five a really fast left-hander where they lean right on the outside of the racetrack
00:05:47Straight into another left hand if you any problems out of one corner you're straight into the next one
00:05:52Tends to have a snowball effect then a pretty easy turn seven before they come over
00:05:57The crest here into the corner where they've all been flying off the racetrack through practice
00:06:03And qualifying it's a high speed arrival
00:06:06something
00:06:07Around 150 miles an hour over the crest of the hill there
00:06:11And immediately feed the car in over a new white line that marks the pit lane entry
00:06:16And this is the final corner where they have to launch off the curb try to catch the car the other side
00:06:20Keeping as much throttle on as possible into game once once again rather that pit straight up the hill towards turn one
00:06:28So just remember it is this first turn that's going to be critical michael schumacher
00:06:34Nearest you on the right hand side then montoya behind michael schumacher his brother ralph behind montoya is rubens
00:06:42Barrichello, then jano trulli nick heidfeld in the sauber and in row four the two
00:06:48McLarens as jason button brings up the rear the last grid that is the 11th row of the grid look at montoya
00:06:56Watch for the lights when they come there. They are it's going to be five when they all
00:07:01Go out the race will begin. There'll be a pause after the fifth light
00:07:08And it's go they get away a good start a brilliant start and the two jordans are left on the line
00:07:16And up and it's the two williams in the lead already montoya leads and ralph schumacher is in second place
00:07:22Michael schumacher down to third position and look at that hacking in two. So we've got a sauber a jordan
00:07:29McLaren, there's another car also on the grid. So launch controls are still not sorted out
00:07:35We've got a williams one two a ferrari three four cool card then too many cars to clear on the line
00:07:41Murray, I wonder if they'll have to bring the safety car out so many cars to get out of the way
00:07:45Yeah, it's a very short lap. It's reichen and who is stuck down there
00:07:49But and off goes the jordan and they're pushing it away from the line
00:07:53Let us hope that they are able to clear those cars because it's a magnificent start for the two williams
00:07:59Bmws and montoya leads a grand prix as he did in brazil and it is mika hacken who is sitting on the line
00:08:06Mika hacken and who was eight the man who has done so badly in the world championship this year
00:08:13And double world champion already, but lap one montoya leaves ralph schumacher michael schumacher barry kello is still in fourth position
00:08:20He started there
00:08:21I think they have to bring the safety car out married too many cars to clear away
00:08:25And let me have a look if I can see any kind of notice the safety car is deployed as you can now see on
00:08:30Your screen, they cannot clear hacking out of the way. He's not really in a super dangerous situation
00:08:36Clearly they can't find neutral. There should be a separate reservoir of energy to pull that car into neutral
00:08:42You lose all the hydraulic power when the engine dies should be a separate source of energy
00:08:46It's not working on the mclaren. And when you see a replay of the of the start both williams bmws
00:08:53Flying off the line michael schumacher appearing to get away
00:08:56Well, but just not going anywhere once he got up to speed and we saw four cars stalled on the line
00:09:02You can see them bumping along
00:09:04They're actually turning the engine over as they're trying to push that mclaren along and really he's going to have to get out
00:09:09And they're going to crane it off because says I don't know. That's it shakes his head
00:09:13Well, what a terrible terrible season it is for double world champion. Micah hackett
00:09:18Three failures to finish already in australia in brazil and in spain where he had that problem and here again
00:09:25It looks as though he's not going to even start the race and here is the replay now
00:09:29Watch the two white and blue bmws. Look at montoya on the dirty side of the track
00:09:33And what a sensational start from ralph sumac straight past his brother and his brother is challenged
00:09:39But michael schumacher turns in he's cleared that first corner this year. Mike martin. Take this one again
00:09:45Look, they're just having a dive all over the place
00:09:47So now i've never seen so many stalled cars on the grid both jordan's then
00:09:51Hacking in and reikinin and no dramas at the first corner
00:09:54We're missing some key players by the time we get there and look at williams 1-2
00:09:59Kluptart appeared to have a good start look past virtually past both ferraris
00:10:03But then lost out somehow is now back down in fifth place and look at that
00:10:07That's a sinking feeling in your heart if you're eddie jordan and a disaster all of these fandango electronics look and they're just
00:10:15Failing they're failing the drivers. They're failing the teams just goes to show the best electronic brains in the world
00:10:21Couldn't solve that problem now with the safety car out and there's the replay again
00:10:25And that that that start from ralph schumacher's is one of the best I have ever seen in grand prix racing
00:10:30Straight up to his teammate now the order now
00:10:33We're on lap three, of course with the safety car still out with montoya leading ralph schumacher in the williams bmw
00:10:40Michael schumacher third his teammate rubens barrichello is fourth david kulfard who started seventh has gained two places
00:10:47He's up to fifth and here's that star look at ralph just hooked it up beautifully
00:10:51But montoya keeps the inside line doesn't really squeeze his teammate and ralph knowing he's going to have to yield
00:10:57Michael just did not get away look like there was much too much power being
00:11:02Taken out by his launch control moved off the line. I stood looking out of the window while you're talking about
00:11:07Michael schumacher moving away nicely as the lights went off but just didn't go anywhere and the williams bmws just launched
00:11:14But the start of the austrian grand prix was not ralph schumacher. It was eddie irvine
00:11:2013th on the grid one three and he's in sixth position now in the jaguar
00:11:25I don't think he'll be expected to stay there because jaguar is still working very hard on the car
00:11:29But you can see it bobbing and weaving as he goes into the right hander at turn four
00:11:34Now now they've got the car inside the white lines that show either end of the pit lane itself. Murray they can
00:11:41Start and the mechanics can start hackerman's car as the same with frentzen and truly and he can get back into the race
00:11:48If they can restart it now, we understand the safety car is coming in this lap and uh,
00:11:54The race director charlie whiting will not be pleased to see a mclaren parked right across the fast lane of the pits there
00:12:01Well, I'll tell you this there's been a lot of discussion about whether ron dennis the boss of the mclaren team
00:12:07would ask mika hackerman to defer to
00:12:10Mick
00:12:11To uh, david coulthard as coulthard is doing so well in the championship compared with hackerman
00:12:15I don't think there's any doubt that that will have to happen now
00:12:18It's going to be no points for mika hackerman in this race
00:12:21And david coulthard is in fifth position as the race is going to restart now
00:12:25Watch out because they're all tied up together and it's montoya
00:12:30schumacher
00:12:31Ralph schumacher michael barrichello david coulthard and there's a gap to eddie irvine behind eddie
00:12:37Irvine is joshua stephan in the arrows. He's come up from 16th to 7th position another terrific start
00:12:44The austrian grand prix is go again, and this is lap four out of 71
00:12:49Hacking and then driving down the pit lane. Murray just saw him get up and running. He was parked in the fast lane
00:12:55Benetton came through
00:12:56I don't know who that was who pitted but uh hacking and no problems. He's now back in the race
00:13:01Of course, he's lost those two laps and there you see then an overhead shot of mika hackerman
00:13:06Joining the race one last at the moment frentzen is the only retiree of those four that stalled on the grid
00:13:13Yeah, and heights harold frentzen was in eighth position in the world championship
00:13:18Looking to do much better this year in the jordan, which is going so so much better, but no luck here in austria
00:13:25And it's still close up at the front between coulthard
00:13:29And montoya just two seconds when this lap started shaking his head sitting in the jordan in the garage
00:13:35Heights harold frentzen from munchen gladback who's at three times a grand prix winner now
00:13:42Remember the uh, the williams bmws are on michelin tires and rubens barrichello
00:13:49Very saucily having a look at his team leader michael schumacher as they go into turn one
00:13:55The gap between the two is very close. Look at verstappen right up behind verstappen
00:13:59Clearly on lower fuel and that is truly off the road truly out of uh
00:14:05What is 19th place? He stalled on the grid. Remember verstappen was shaping up. Did he pass the mclaren?
00:14:10Yes, he did verstappen then up into fifth place having passed
00:14:14Coulthard who appears to be very slow at this stage of the race now that back arrows with the asia tech engine is
00:14:21Blindingly quick in a straight line and that's what happened to trulli trulli
00:14:25Hit I think was it pedro de la rosa or was it eddie irvine whichever is one of the jaguars
00:14:31He is out of the race
00:14:32So it looks as though both the jordan drivers are taking an early bath because we are now on lap five
00:14:38And verstappen I suspect mika hacken and tours in retires from the fourth time in six races
00:14:45He's only had two points finishes at the san marino grand prix and malaysia replay
00:14:50Of yano trulli going off at turn one lap five now
00:14:55Well truly would already been a lap down whichever jaguar he was fighting. He would have been a lap down
00:15:00Because of his start line problems, but already then in the gravel track for him and look at barricado hustling teammate
00:15:07Michael schumacher third and fourth place and montoya then with a one second lead over his teammate barricado shaping up then
00:15:14To have a look at the inside into turn two. Can he make it around michael?
00:15:18That was close. Yeah, i'll have you chuck your nose off says michael schumacher
00:15:22But just verstappen look at him in the eye now
00:15:24I was saying earlier on I suspect he's on a two-stop strategy that car is blindingly quick in a straight line
00:15:31We saw him do wonderfully well in the malaysian grand prix in the wet
00:15:35They seem to have a very good control system on the car
00:15:38But verstappen is closed right up now to rubens barricado in the ferrari race order lap six montoya
00:15:45Ralph schumacher michael schumacher rubens barricado
00:15:48There's two seconds covering the first four covering the first five and josh verstappen has just made the fastest lap of the race
00:15:55So far in the arrows michelin tires first and second bridgestone third fourth and fifth and in sixth position
00:16:02David coulthard is in the points. David coulthard started seventh. He got up to fifth
00:16:07He's been passed by josh verstappen an incredible drive by the dutchman josh verstappen in the orange arrows
00:16:14He has a look at barricado barricado does not have a look at michael schumacher this time
00:16:20It's coming up to turn two that barricado starts to close or has done in the past on michael schumacher
00:16:26But it looks as though michael has got the legs on his teammate at the present moment as montoya ralph schumacher michael
00:16:34barricado
00:16:36And it is williams bmw williams bmw ferrari ferrari
00:16:39What a change at the front the mclarens only one of them in the points and the other out of the race
00:16:44Well, we saw montoya
00:16:46Carelessly leading the brazilian grand prix, of course
00:16:48Marie wondered if he'd feel under pressure leading his first grand prix back then
00:16:52He made no mistakes at all until ironically verstappen ran into it as he lapped him
00:16:57But uh, there's a good squabble down the field and that must be irvine panis villeneuve
00:17:04And bernaldi in the second arrow, so, uh, we're looking there at uh, eight ninth tenth and eleventh and as you can see
00:17:11It's very close. Yeah, the two arrows are doing well
00:17:14Bernaldi enrique bernaldi from brazil new to grand prix racing formula one this year
00:17:19And the williams team in the garage look impassively at their man as they cross the line
00:17:24And already we have exceeded one at tenth the distance in the austrian grand prix
00:17:30and josh verstappen
00:17:32Driving magnificently now that is heidfeld behind notes reichannan. Kimi reichannan in seventh position behind
00:17:40David kruppard the man in the points in the mclaren and out of the race already
00:17:45Hugs harold fredson mika hackanan and fissi keller has retired in the benetton
00:17:5119 left out of the 22 who started lap 8. Yes
00:17:54It was obviously reichannan then who got away
00:17:57Well, it was heidfeld in the sister sauber that stalled on the line not reichannan heidfeld down in 18th
00:18:03Truly down in 19th the other two stallers on the grid are both out of the race hackanan and fredson
00:18:09They're unable to get those cars running. You saw hackanan
00:18:12Pulling in the pit garage nose first
00:18:13He knew his day was over and now verstappen's got up onto the back of barricada can't do too much about the ferraris
00:18:20Surely he's on a lower fuel load significantly lower i'd imagine and as the main players now settle into the race
00:18:28And the pattern begins to be set. So the question now is what about fuel stop strategies?
00:18:32Well, I would expect joss verstappen to come in first and if he's on the two-stopper
00:18:37He'll probably come in round about lap 23
00:18:40We're on lap nine at the present moment with the two ferraris and verstappen third fourth fifth absolutely together
00:18:47And if verstappen's on the two-stopper, I say he'll come in round about lap 23
00:18:51Then the others are on a one-stopper. I think the earliest we can expect anybody to come in will be round about lap 38
00:18:58But I expect everybody to stay out for as long as they possibly can
00:19:03Start with a heavy fuel load come in late take on as little fuel as possible
00:19:08To save as much time as possible and then sprint out and the michelin tires are going to be stronger
00:19:14They believe in the second half of the race than in the first
00:19:18The bridgestones are very stable throughout the race and it's mitchell in leading mitchell in second
00:19:23And then the bridgestone runners the two ferraris and joss verstappen and look how tight it is around the circuit
00:19:30Now I am surprised martin that uh, michael schumacher is not doing better than this
00:19:35He got pole position absolutely magnificently. You think he's playing some sort of a waiting game doesn't look like it
00:19:42Specter's quite fat on fuel to be honest marie, and i'm sure cool card is having had a poor grid slot
00:19:48I'm, sure both mclaren's were on low fuel, but uh, montoya leads from schumacher ralph michael schumacher third
00:19:55And that was bernaldi passing eddie irvine there
00:20:00So bernaldi making his way through the field barricado fourth verstappen fifth cool card in six. We'll be back shortly
00:20:42This is michael schumacher
00:20:48Volgens mij was daar een williams die even van de baan geleed
00:20:53Dit is cool tight. Dit is raiconen
00:20:58Dit is panisse
00:21:01Dit is bernaldi
00:21:03En daar inderdaad ralph schumacher met een probleem ralph schumacher
00:21:08Tergent langzaam op weg naar de pits
00:21:12Foreign
00:21:23I mean brakes is too risky to me. Sorry
00:21:28I'm coming in too risky
00:21:42Is
00:22:12Foreign
00:22:26Who has just retired he has rolled into the pit lane having lost his place there it goes schumacher
00:22:34Michael through there goes barricado there goes verstappen in the arrows
00:22:39So verstappen is now up into fourth position and montoya is being pushed very hard indeed
00:22:44That's the replay then of ralph schumacher falling out of the race some kind of technical problem on the way into turn three this
00:22:52Happened earlier on in the race to eddie. Irvine seems to be going backwards down the field
00:22:56Squeezing villeneuve. They just just the gentlest of kisses and villeneuve
00:23:01Into a bit of a pendulum speed swing there irvine still holding down ninth place
00:23:06Certainly on his back foot jack having to take to the grass
00:23:09Yeah, he lost it initially didn't he off of the actual curbing and grass on the way in as uh, eddie
00:23:15Probably didn't see him coming up there. So uh jack will recover from that spin
00:23:19We don't know what the problem is with ralph schumacher. And now look the two ferraris are hustling
00:23:25Montoya montoya has fallen off the pace by some eight tenths of a second
00:23:29Remember what I said to you on the grid the michelins apparently go away then for 10 to 15 laps
00:23:35After the early stages of the running and hopefully come back to them later in the stint
00:23:41And now you're seeing all the signs of that as the two ferraris verstappen and kulfa home in on montoya in the lead james
00:23:50Yeah, ralph schumacher knew the game was up martin as he rolled down the pit lane
00:23:53The engine was switched off the mechanics have had a really good look at the car and it's a right rear problem
00:23:58I think it's a suspension failure could be a brake problem, but it's more likely to be a suspension failure
00:24:02But as you say these tires and michelin tires montoya's struggling. All right
00:24:06Thank you james because now michael schumacher is right up with montoya's williams bmw pushing very hard indeed
00:24:13But columbian is under pressure with a massive capital p and rubens barrichello is hanging on to michael schumacher
00:24:20And absolutely fabulous. Look at the way josh verstappen in the orange arrows is hanging on to the three cars ahead of him
00:24:26They must have a lot of horsepower
00:24:28It compared with him, but that asia tech engine is very strong indeed
00:24:32They've been developing and he's running very low downforce
00:24:35But he's managing to hold the car on the track and that is through to lap 14 out of 71
00:24:40Well, the bmw was too much grunting up the hill for michael to have a look but montoya really struggling through the corners
00:24:46The tires grain, let me tell you what that means
00:24:48They get little the rubber rolls on top of the tire and instead of the tire sitting on the track
00:24:53You're squirming around on the little balls of rubber. You can't slow the car down
00:24:58You can't turn it in and you can't get on the power and look he's just absolutely
00:25:03A victim to be overtaken. All he can do is make that car as wide as possible
00:25:08But surely they're going to pass him easily as some say when they do they'll all go past him
00:25:13But he's certainly clearly making a good job of holding them up
00:25:17But he just has not got the grip to turn in or get out of the corners, but he's holding him
00:25:22Rubens barrichello, of course, he's keeping michael schumacher respectable
00:25:26Verstappen is keeping barrichello respectable barrichello
00:25:30He's looking for a way past schumacher who's got to hold him back and at the same time try to attack montoya
00:25:35And that has given david kuthard the opportunity to close him a bit and reichanen is in a six
00:25:41but no there the the
00:25:44The sauber is right up with them now because montoya is slowing up the race
00:25:49You see first second third fourth fifth sixth and in seventh position olivier pannis in the bar is closing on them
00:25:58And montoya is struggling something has got to give
00:26:02Well, the tires are letting him down. We know at this stage
00:26:05We know how fast that car is in a straight line
00:26:08Providing he can keep parking it in the middle of the apex
00:26:11And of course while you're fighting a guy who's holding up creating a traffic jam
00:26:16You've got to watch him and you've got to watch your mirrors as well murray because everybody'll be trying to make and somebody is being
00:26:22Black flag. It's a black flag. It's going
00:26:25It's truly yano. Truly is being black flag
00:26:29Apparently he left the pit lane while the red light was on you're not allowed to leave the pit lane until there's a green light
00:26:35Showing there's somebody who watches the approaching track
00:26:38And if he sees cars bearing down on the end of the pit lane, he'll give him a red light
00:26:43Yes, the only time the red light comes on at the end of the pit lane is when the
00:26:48The snake behind the safety car is coming around as it enters the beginning of the pit zone
00:26:52The red light goes on you're not allowed to join until the whole crocodile has passed the end of the pit lane truly clearly
00:26:59Ignoring that and can montoya keep this lot behind him while he waits those few laps
00:27:05For his tires to come back in at the moment. He's managing to do it. Well
00:27:1025 year old mark. Pablo from
00:27:13Bogota in columbia is an incredible man. He's totally unfazed
00:27:19This is the best chance that michael schumacher's had so far marie
00:27:22Sorry to interrupt you, but can he go around the outside?
00:27:24We know michael can break a lot later and still he's coming back michael's got to think of his world
00:27:30Through goes barrichello. Sorry martin through goes barrichella off goes montoya off goes michael schumacher
00:27:36Michael schumacher tried to dive inside montoya who had to go wide he's gone onto the gravel and so rubens barrichello has grasped his opportunity
00:27:44And now williams have got to fight back. We've seen schumacher go out of the race. What's happening to montoya?
00:27:50There he is inside or ricky bernalde. So montoya has slipped from first to seventh places
00:27:56Yes, and montoya deciding he would that was silly actually he should have let michael go he should realize
00:28:02That he's not in a position to fight for this race michael went down the outside
00:28:06He had a much better braking capacity
00:28:08We know that's a tire related thing at this stage of the race and the colombian just would not yield and it's cost him
00:28:15And it's cost schumacher dearly question for historical enthusiasts
00:28:20When was an arrows last on a podium position a long time ago?
00:28:26And it's josh verstappen now in third position
00:28:28The hungary 97 remember damon nearly won the race lost it on the very last one at the hunger oaring but verstappen then
00:28:36Very fast, whatever fuel load he's got in that car
00:28:39so
00:28:40Montoya has got a clear track in front of him
00:28:43But a lot of cars in front of him and david kohlfeld is now right up there with vios verstappen
00:28:49It's barrichello leading it is verstappen now in second position
00:28:53And behind verstappen is david kohlfeld. It's getting very stretched indeed
00:28:58As michael schumacher closes in sixth position on olivier panis
00:29:04replay
00:29:04Here we go
00:29:05Then michael saying okay, you're going to cover the line
00:29:07Well, i'll have to go down the outside and the colombian getting back off the brakes
00:29:11Look losing the back of the car really just almost sacrificed himself in that corner
00:29:17So as not to lose the lead and michael schumacher definitely paid the price
00:29:21He had no option but to try to go around the outside of him
00:29:23The colombian doing such a good job of blocking the racing line and he's perfectly entitled to do that
00:29:28But as he got off the brake pedal, he left himself way too little space to slow the car down
00:29:33Luckily for michael
00:29:34He didn't stall in and watch montoy lose the back of the car have to turn into the slide
00:29:39And begins to take up the space that michael thought he would go around michael then taking a few risks
00:29:45There you have to say to try and get around the outside of that williams
00:29:48Well, I don't know if you've registered this but this is a quite incredible drive by kimmy raikkonen
00:29:52As enrique bernalde in the arrows comes in he's obviously going to retire
00:29:57He's not going up to his tire changing position into the garage goes bernalde from eighth position
00:30:03That means eddie irvine moves up and kimmy raikkonen in the salvo is in fourth place
00:30:08There he is in the blue and white car followed by olivier panis behind olivier panis is michael schumacher
00:30:13Fastest lap of the race michael schumacher one minute 12.2
00:30:18And that is about half a second outside the lap record
00:30:21Yeah, michael over a second faster than anybody else while he closed the gap to pan is obviously recovering from that
00:30:27Turn two incident with montoya a man with a smile on his face at the moment will be david kuhlgaard his main
00:30:34Championship protagonist now behind him his teammate once again out of the race hacken and stalling on the grid
00:30:40And never really getting his car up and running
00:30:42He must surely know that verstappen in second place will be stopping earlier than he does for fuel
00:30:48So kuhlgaard feeling pretty happy with life
00:30:50The only problem he's got is that michael schumacher is still very much in this race albeit sixth place right now
00:30:57Lap 19 then out of 71 you see in front of you the top seven
00:31:01But here they are again rubens barrichello leading the austrian grand prix from joss verstappen by six tenths of a second
00:31:08David kuhlgaard who started seventh is now third
00:31:11Kimi raikkonen who started ninth is now fourth olivier pannis in the bar fifth michael schumacher
00:31:18Who slipped off is now up into sixth position and challenging montoya who was leading is in seventh place
00:31:25Eighth is eddie ervine ninth is villeneuve
00:31:28Tenth is the second jaguar of pedro de la rosa driving in his second race for the team. They're doing much better here
00:31:35Retirements frentzen is out peckinen is out missy keller is out ralph schumacher is out trelli is out
00:31:4217 of the 22 who started are still running now strangely then montoya running back there in seventh place
00:31:49He's now back on the kind of pace
00:31:51He was running at the start of this grand prix
00:31:53Seems like the graining and lurgy problem from his tires have actually gone away and he's now back on pace
00:32:00But it's too late for him so baricello from verstappen by 7 tenths of a second only kuhlgaard a further 1.4 down the road
00:32:08We'll take a break
00:32:30A extra stop
00:32:35Schumacher
00:32:46Montoya
00:33:01But
00:33:10Retired
00:33:26Yeah
00:33:30You also
00:33:32think
00:33:36And
00:33:39Okay
00:33:45Yeah
00:34:00Schumacher
00:34:17Patrick
00:34:26Just approaching one third distance as you look at
00:34:30Pablo montoya in the williams
00:34:32He is in seventh position not making any impression on michael schumacher
00:34:36Indeed, he's dropping back a bit after having run wide and gone onto the gravel
00:34:41But michael schumacher and there he is in sixth position
00:34:44Has not managed to get ahead of olivier panis in the bar
00:34:49And panis can't do anything about kimmy reichen and who's in fourth place in the salvo
00:34:54David kuhlgaard who started in seventh position looks as though he's good for world championship points
00:34:59He's missed a consistency this year. He's already scored in all the five world championship races this year
00:35:06He's the only man to have done so and I think james allen has got news for us
00:35:10Yeah, just trying to work out what the strategies everyone is on rubens barrichello
00:35:13David kuhlgaard kimmy reichen olivier panis and michael schumacher. I reckon are on quite a lot of fuel
00:35:18They can go perhaps as long as lap 44 45 46 if necessary
00:35:22Verstappen we've said is lighter on fuel. I believe montoya probably is as well
00:35:27So that means that reichen and is looking very good here
00:35:30But the guy to focus on for me is david kuhlgaard
00:35:33I do believe that with a bit of patience and the mclaren who have a fantastic pit stop record
00:35:38They can actually win this race here today if kuhlgaard is a little bit lucky
00:35:41Yeah, and at the moment michael schumacher's on one world championship point and david kuhlgaard is on four world championship points for third position
00:35:51so he's closing the gap by some three points and he's
00:35:55Eight points behind michael schumacher in the championship at the present moment
00:35:58But there's a long long way to go in this race david kuhlgaard there. He is supremely fit
00:36:04And the mclaren team were obviously stung to the quick by their failure to do well in qualifying yesterday
00:36:11And that is the arrows team. Well, only one arrow is left in the race
00:36:14So bad news then for verstappen. He's going so well, obviously, we all knew he had less fuel than the cars
00:36:21He's running around but he's coming in at a third distance just over a third distance a normal
00:36:26Two stopper then for verstappen and that will put him down the order nonetheless a good run from him in the early stages
00:36:33Right kuhlgaard then moving up to second reichen and then up into third place at this stage of the race
00:36:39Barrichello a new fastest lap up front on a one twelve point two and kuhlgaard just about matching him in second place
00:36:47Well, if kimmy reichen and moves into third position as into the pits comes yos verstappen
00:36:53It'll mean to say that salva are in a podium position for the second time this year
00:36:58The second's taking away out goes yos verstappen now
00:37:02the first uh
00:37:04the first seven have gone through we're waiting for eddie irvine now in eighth position as
00:37:10Verstappen comes up to the exit from the pit lane at turn one eddie irvine and villeneuve have gone through
00:37:17So it looks to me as though yos verstappen who came in from seventh place has dropped to 10th position
00:37:22David kuhlgaard, of course has moved up a place. There is the race leader rubens barrichello. He's three seconds now
00:37:29No, he is. Yes. He's three seconds ahead of david kuhlgaard
00:37:33And kimmy reichen and in third place panis is fourth michael schumacher has been elevated to fifth position
00:37:40Only one of the leaders has yet made a pit stop and that of course was the man
00:37:44We've just seen yos verstappen as panis continues to bottle up michael schumacher panis now in fourth place
00:37:52Yes, I don't think verstappen will be that far down. He could still have maintained at seventh place
00:37:56So working out quite well for verstappen at this stage of the race as james said these guys could well go
00:38:03well over 40 laps
00:38:04I think with the amount of fuel and michael schumacher losing out on the exit of turn one there in the turbulent air
00:38:10Of the bar honda and nothing he can do is nowhere near close enough to have a nibble panis an old hand these days
00:38:17Not going to make too many mistakes and we're on board with villeneuve then who is chasing eddie irvine in eighth
00:38:24Remember they've already touched once in this race
00:38:27and uh
00:38:30Causing a spin on this very corner for jacob
00:38:33well, if any team
00:38:35There is the bar and the ferrari really really badly and michael
00:38:41Michael schumacher then has managed to get ahead of panis panis must have a problem. He lost so much time in that
00:38:48One straight and corner. I wonder if panis has got some kind of problem then already look losing two or three hundred meters to michael
00:38:55Schumacher, hopefully we'll get a replay of that one schumacher then now staring at the back of the
00:39:02Sauber of the 21 year old and look here's panis and uh, michael
00:39:07Then really taking an easy run up to the inside and do they touch? No, they don't I wonder why panis lost so much time
00:39:14Maybe we'll find out shortly
00:39:16Well, whatever that's a very very slippery corner turns one and two have been claiming driver after driver in practicing and qualifying
00:39:24And you hit the gravel there you get a lot of dust you get onto the grass you lose momentum
00:39:28Of course because you're going uphill
00:39:30And panis is definitely dropping back as reichanen in third position can now see the scarlet ferrari in his mirrors
00:39:38And the gap between reichanen and michael schumacher is just under two seconds and the comparative lap times were
00:39:46Well, there was only a tenth of a second in it to michael schumacher's advantage on the previous lap
00:39:50But that was when he was battling with olivier panis and he's pulling away from the bar
00:39:55Closing on the salvo in front of him. We're on lap 26 now
00:40:00So we are more than one third of the way through the austrian grand prix 71 that race
00:40:06Well, let me remind you what's happened so far both jordan stalled on the grid
00:40:09And as did heidfeld in the sauber and mika hakkinen in the mclaren
00:40:15At the first corner that williams are one and two montoya leading well ralph staying with him ralph schumacher
00:40:21Schumacher dropping out then with some kind of technical problem and then the tires going away
00:40:27On montoya's car tripping over with michael into turn two barrichello takes over the lead then verstappen was running
00:40:34Well, he's had to pit early. He was on a low fuel load and bernalde is out in the arrows
00:40:39He retired mechanical problems truly black flag flag disqualified
00:40:43For leaving the pits under the red light while the safety car was going past and uh, ralph
00:40:49I've talked about physicale just a retirement early on hakkinen and frenzen
00:40:53Never getting up and running in this race after stalling on the grid as you look at the battle for third position
00:40:59Kimi raikkonen in the blue and white a salvo patronus ferrari engine is being challenged by the ferrari ferrari
00:41:06The ferrari of michael schumacher who's taken 1.6 seconds out of his 1.9 second lap
00:41:13I thought it was a macquarie. It was it was a minardi
00:41:16It was taso marquez who was slowing up and michael schumacher now. There he is. There is marquez in the european
00:41:24Minardi touring out of the race. Well, he was in the 15th position ahead of vic heinfeld who had the bad start
00:41:32Of course in the second salvo. He's still running now in 15th position, but he is a lap adrift
00:41:38Kimi raikkonen continues to resist the efforts the sterling efforts of michael schumacher to get past him
00:41:45But surely it must be only a matter of time
00:41:47The ferrari is quicker and look at the experience of michael schumacher compared with raikkonen
00:41:52It'd be interesting to see how raikkonen handles this. He's been so
00:41:55Supremely impressive and confident in these early stages michael great drive there out of turn two
00:42:00Surely just in the sweet spot for a good tow all the way down
00:42:05We know the works ferrari engine must have more power than the customer ferrari engine and there you see it clearly for yourselves
00:42:12back into the podium position
00:42:15michael schumacher who slid off at turn two in that
00:42:20Confrontation with juan pablo montoya who is now in the points incidentally
00:42:25Montoya with verstappen having come into the pits is now in sixth position replay as at the grasser curve
00:42:32Schumacher takes third position interestingly schumacher holding his hand up to raikkonen to say thanks for letting me through
00:42:39I think it's really thanks for being mature and sensible about this
00:42:43I don't think raikkonen was making it too easy for michael schumacher
00:42:46Michael feeling the need to thank him and there's michael
00:42:50Lining up must have been a replay earlier in the race as he was lining up to pass panis
00:42:54Probably getting on for another 20 laps before the leaders come in for their sole pit stop
00:42:59But the top six on lap 29 out of 71 rubens barrichello 2.3 seconds ahead of david kuhlfein
00:43:07Who is four seconds ahead of michael schumacher who has just passed kimi raikkonen who is fourth fifth is olivier panis in the bar
00:43:15Sixth is montoya the previous race leader. We are leaving spielberg, but come back to us soon now
00:43:32Team
00:43:45Thank you
00:44:01Foreign
00:44:15Foreign
00:44:18Pit board for michael schumacher
00:44:23Schild with cool tights

00:44:44Eddie urvine is
00:44:59Foreign
00:45:15Foreign
00:45:36Lap 31 out of 71 in austria. None of the current top six have made a pit stop yet
00:45:43Rubens barrichello david kuhlfein is two and a half seconds behind him
00:45:47But michael schumacher in the ferrari is now closing on the mclaren in second place
00:45:52Michael schumacher's previous lap was nearly a second faster than david kuhlfein
00:45:57Kimi raikkonen has been banned there. You see david kuhlfein. He's coming up to pedro de la rosa in the jaguar
00:46:04Yeah, of course i've had two very bad laps in traffic and look how close michael schumacher is and schumacher is on that lap
00:46:121.4 seconds faster than either barrichello in first place or kuhlfein in second place a
00:46:18Storming drive now from michael schumacher. He still easily has the ability to win this race
00:46:25Well, let's just remind ourselves about mika hakkinen who was in tenth place in the world championship
00:46:31With just four world championship points when he started this race the double world champion
00:46:36He has failed again his car failed to get going it was his fourth retirement from six races
00:46:42It really does look now as though mika hakkinen is out of the championship from this year
00:46:48And that he will have to defer to his teammate david kuhlfein
00:46:52Who's had those five points finishes from five races this year who is in second position this this year now here
00:47:00And he is some three and a half seconds behind rubens barrichello as we ride with the bar
00:47:08Of jacques villeneuve with eddie irvine's jaguar. There he is. There is villeneuve
00:47:13Who suffered an engine failure in the warm in the?
00:47:16warm the half hour warm-up this morning
00:47:19Changed cars and he's out in the spare car now as barrichello turns into turn one
00:47:25Now the climb up to turn two as he builds to
00:47:29185 miles an hour down through the box into second gear from seventh to 40 miles an hour on the apex
00:47:37Stop it sliding
00:47:38Just nip over the curbing there
00:47:41Keep your left wheels off the grass down to turn three the gersa curve second gear 55 miles an hour
00:47:48There is jean alessi in the blue crossed about to be lapped by david kuhlfein who has got
00:47:54Michael schumacher bearing down on him ron dennis there and michael schumacher is now
00:48:001.7 seconds one tenth of a second slower than kuhlfein on the previous lap and he has lapped alessi
00:48:06He has lapped alessi and does michael schumacher get held up. Yes
00:48:10He does slightly behind alessi alessi now yielding but kuhlfein there
00:48:15Just a little bit and kuhlfein now with a bit of breathing space in front of him has fallen to
00:48:203.8 seconds behind the traffic has not played into his hands at all and the ferrari both ferraris gaining
00:48:26Kuhlfein now very much the meat in a ferrari sandwich
00:48:30Yeah, we ought to be seeing some pretty quick laps soon because the fuel load is dropping all the time
00:48:35Of course the best lap we've had so far was michael schumacher one minute 11.6
00:48:3911.6
00:48:41Which is actually a new lap record david kuhlfein created the lap record last year one minute 11.78
00:48:48So michael schumacher has already broken the lap record his fuel load is dropping the weight of the car is going down
00:48:56david kuhlfein
00:48:57Michael schumacher and the gap just over one and a half seconds
00:49:02But michael schumacher is going faster on this lap than he's been before
00:49:06Exactly as I was just saying as the fuel load goes down he goes faster
00:49:11He's just gone through the first of the three sectors on this circuit faster than anybody
00:49:16But what a battle is developing behind it because we've now got blacked cars
00:49:21And it's happening all the way down the field as reichen and panis and the others close up on them
00:49:26That's the big fight then is a montoya. You're now looking at closing in on panis fifth panis sixth montoya
00:49:33Remember he fell back to seventh when he had the coming or near coming together with michael schumacher into turn two
00:49:40And there's clear air at the front. Now. We're going to see who's got the pace villner then
00:49:45Passing and uh montoya. I think that must be uh, eddie irvine with some kind of problem louise
00:49:51I sat here with mika hackett and mika the second race in a row
00:49:54We've seen him occur and fail to get away off the line cleanly presumably. It's the electronics yet again
00:49:59We simply don't know
00:50:01We simply don't know the team will investigate tonight and also tomorrow whole day to understand what has happened and
00:50:08We don't know. Was it my mistake or was it?
00:50:10Technical failure in the car. It's very complicated to see that
00:50:13So many races into the championship now so few points on the scoreboard. Is this the end of your championship hopes?
00:50:20Well, it doesn't look too promising does it
00:50:23Thanks mika, oh bless him. He's a lovely bloke a very phlegmatic about it because uh,
00:50:30Mika, mika hackett and as I said earlier on it only got four world championship points compared with michael's
00:50:3736 when the race started he's got no world championship points from this race michael schumacher
00:50:43If he finishes he's going to get at least four I think and he's uh, he's continuing to challenge david kuhlbart
00:50:49but now the interest is developing with the
00:50:53Bridgestone and the michelin tires the top michelin driver is montoyle with ralph schumacher
00:50:59His williams team mate out of the race a montoyre is sixth new fastest lap then number one
00:51:0511.1 for michael schumacher as I said clear error at the front and what did barry keller do a 118 kuhlgart a
00:51:11114 michael schumacher a
00:51:1411.1
00:51:15So there you can see the pace and michael schumacher. This is critical for kuhlgart
00:51:20He knows that if he lets schumacher past surely
00:51:23Barry keller will be told to yield if it's a ferrari one two barry keller will have to yield and it'll be 10 points for
00:51:28Michael and uh four points for david if he ends up in third place
00:51:32So he's somehow got to stay ahead of that ferrari of michael schumacher's so that ferrari cannot bring team
00:51:39Play into it. Yeah a present moment with the ferrari's first and third. They're on a potential 14
00:51:47Constructors world championship points compared with mclaren six for david kuhlbart
00:51:52So the gap is extending by eight points and ferrari were already 18 points ahead of mclaren
00:52:00Ferrari who won the constructors championship in 1999
00:52:04But lost the drivers championship and then they won it again last year, of course
00:52:08So they're looking for a hat trick to prove that they really really really are back at the top of formula one
00:52:15As historically they have been in the past, but they've had major gaps now
00:52:20There is the sauber diving out to take
00:52:23John alasi pursued by montoya and panis and panis. There is montoya
00:52:30He is in sixth position and you're looking now the battle for fifth and sixth panis and montoya
00:52:36Yeah, strange. We saw panis really fall away from the pace didn't we and michael schumacher passed him easily in a straight line
00:52:41Whatever his glitch was it's it's fine now
00:52:44So uh reichen in fourth 2.2 seconds ahead then you can see reichen in at the front
00:52:49That is a lapped cross and panis coming under pressure montoya
00:52:53Not close enough up there into turn three and they are just four tenths of a second apart last time past the pits
00:53:00And it's even less now
00:53:02So a good scrap number look at reichen and up there in fourth place and he clearly is not on a light fuel load
00:53:08They're 37. This is the 37th lap of the race and the jaguar team mechanics coming out into the pit lane
00:53:15I would guess it's for eddie. Irvine who is in eighth position. There's quite a gap between him and jasper stephen
00:53:22He's got jack villeneuve right behind him and montoya is continuing to press now
00:53:27Look at the gap between reichen and there is alasi about to be lapped and panis running wide in the last turn montoya
00:53:34Then just easily breezing up the inside and panis will not get back as they head up into one
00:53:39So montoya takes over sixth place
00:53:42And michael schumacher is continuing to fly
00:53:45He's now less than a second behind david coulthard replay alasi in the blue car montoya dives inside
00:53:53panis' bar
00:53:55Gains the place is up into fifth position with reichen and schumacher coulthard and barrichello ahead of him
00:54:02We're looking at rubens at barrichello the man who won the german grand prix last year
00:54:07His sole win for the marinello team eddie and the jaguar exits the pit lane de la rossa
00:54:13It was then that jaguar were waiting for so, uh from 13th place. De la rossa came in for a pit stop
00:54:19He's been lapped already
00:54:21Everybody up to jack villeneuve in ninth place has been lapped at this stage of the race and it's really a head-to-head
00:54:27Between coulthard at 11 6 for barrichello and 11 3 for coulthard and 11 2 8 8 just eight tenths of a second behind then
00:54:35For michael schumacher not much to choose. So who is behind schumacher that you're looking at now?
00:54:40Well reichen and his fourth montoya is fifth panis is in sixth. Those are the points position yosfa stappan
00:54:47Who was going so well in second place is still close to the points
00:54:52He's seventh position in the arrows having made one pit stop the highest runner to have stopped eddie
00:54:57Irvine is still out there eighth position jack villeneuve just behind him is ninth jean alessi
00:55:03Who you've just seen lapped by the three leaders is tenth and jenson button in the
00:55:09Benetton by virtue of staying out, although he's been lapped is higher than he's used to this year
00:55:14He's in 11th position and here in austria last year jensen button finished to find fifth in his first grand prix
00:55:22For the williams team now button then in 11th place bertie in the prost is 12th
00:55:27Both the prosts are still running fernando alonso in the european minardi is in 13th place
00:55:33Ahead of a lapped nick heidfeld and pedro de la rosa who has just been in the jaguar as the ferrari
00:55:40The mclaren and the second ferrari complete their 39th lap. We're now into the the
00:55:46last third of the race
00:55:48So kuhlfeldt then once again a fraction slower than michael schumacher the gap remains at eight tenths
00:55:54And they're both homing in on barrichello barrichello
00:55:57Just two seconds in the lead as he negotiates the small uphill apex of turn two and a minardi
00:56:05Cruising and that clearly must be alonso because marquez out of the race earlier on
00:56:11well fine drive by alonso the very
00:56:15Lowly funded minardi team compared with the top constructors of ferrari
00:56:20williams jordan mclaren
00:56:22Benetton, of course and now look at this battle here. It is
00:56:26On your right in the black and silver car david kuhlfeldt
00:56:30Second in the world championship and the man who leads him in the world championship is now big in his mirrors
00:56:36It is michael schumacher
00:56:38Not much in it, but michael schumacher is on the quickest lap of the race at the present moment
00:56:42He's gone through both the first and second sectors faster than anybody else has been this afternoon
00:56:48The temperature by the way is creeping up. It started at 28 degrees the track temperature
00:56:53It's now 33
00:56:55But still michael schumacher goes across the line as we ride with heidfeldt now heidfeldt in the sauber
00:57:02Let's let's barton talk us through from the drivers. He's heading down into turn three
00:57:07And there's locking brakes there because it's a downhill slope and you have to start turning in
00:57:11You unload the right front as you turn in so easy to snatch your brain
00:57:15And it's a question of balancing the car through here looking for that curb on the outside getting on the power as soon as you're confident
00:57:21And before you can see the curb and a long long left hander
00:57:24This is turn seven, which is an absolute nothing for a formula one car and we head to a very exciting
00:57:30Minardi pitstop and a very exciting one pablo montoya
00:57:34Is closing on kimmy reichen and he's about to make the fastest lap of the race the colombian and the williams
00:57:40bmw with its
00:57:42outgoes
00:57:43Jenson button in the benetton and montoya is just about one and a half seconds now behind kimmy reichen and
00:57:50As there is barry kello. Now. Look how close it is. Barry kello then kuhlfahrt then michael schumacher
00:57:57Then we're going to see reichen and but there's about a 12 second gap between schumacher
00:58:01Michael and reichen and from finland, but montoya is closing fast on the sauber, right?
00:58:08Cooked up took nine tenths out of barrichello on that lap in his fastest lap of the race
00:58:12He's responded to the scarlet ferrari filling his mirrors and now look it's much more even stephens 1.1 behind barrichello
00:58:200.8 ahead of michael and uh nearly kukdart's got his work cut out this afternoon
00:58:25He's going to feel pretty bruised at the same time. He's had to fight both these ferraris off james
00:58:29What can you tell us it's the crucial phase of the race here martin?
00:58:31We're building up towards the pit stops now just up to two seconds between the top three
00:58:36That's enough for a mistake to decide the outcome in the pit stops
00:58:40It takes 26 seconds to come in here put the fuel in the car and get back out again
00:58:44And as I say we're into the area now where a mistake could decide it the stroke of genius or just simply good pit work
00:58:49Well, you've just seen fizzy color talking to alan for main and that's montoya slowing montoya slowed right down
00:58:56Having closed up on kiddie reichen and you can see the cars passing him
00:59:00It looks as though we are about to see the second williams bmw retirement
00:59:05Yes, the crestfallen people in the garage are taking the gloves off
00:59:09They know that it's now time to pack up their equipment the second retirement
00:59:14But williams and bmw and michelin have again shown that they are very much a force to be reckoned with in grand prix racing
00:59:22They're still developing the car. They're still developing the tires
00:59:25They've done a fabulous job
00:59:27But the austrian grand prix is over for them and that means to say the panis will now be in fifth position
00:59:33And josh mustaphan the gallant josh mustaphan who made that early pit stop in the arrows having been in second position is back
00:59:41in the points
00:59:42martin reminded me about that brilliant drive of damon hills in hungary in
00:59:471997 when against all the odds in the arrows
00:59:50He took and passed michael schumacher to lead the race a brilliantly exciting and inspiring moment
00:59:56Well, josh mustaphan is doing a sterling job at the present moment, too. Oh steady on
01:00:02He's just coasting it downhill, that's uh, yes, that's uh, juan pablo montoya
01:00:07He's getting it away from the track very sensible indeed into a position of safety where there's no danger of it being helped as harry
01:00:15kello
01:00:16Kulfa michael schumacher the gap between them in total two seconds on lap 43
01:00:21Out of 71 over the line. They go to complete the lap into their 44th lap
01:00:28So michael the quickest one that time around the gap down to just six tenths of a second now
01:00:33And back on board with heidfeld your current 12th place, man
01:00:37Remember, he stalled on the grid and that's why he's already a lap down in this race
01:00:42A long time to get those four cars running safety car out initially
01:00:46I felt very struggling to keep the back end of that car under control as he uh,
01:00:51Is uh chasing there?
01:00:54That is uh villeneuve, so quite wise because he's a lap behind
01:00:58Yeah
01:00:58So lap 44 both the ferrari's very much in the hunt only one of the mclarens with hekkinen out
01:01:03Both the salvas are still running with raikkonen very much in the points
01:01:08Both the bars are running with panis in the points
01:01:12Only one of the arrows that of josh for stappan is running both the jaguars eddie. Irvine is in seventh place
01:01:18And pedro de la rosa is still running. There's a ferrari man coming out into the pit lane
01:01:23This is going to be the first pit stop for one of the top three contestants
01:01:29barrichello and schumacher and there is the
01:01:33Michael schumacher third position and barrichello stays out as he comes up behind the jaguar
01:01:39Yes, and he's going to get a clean run up the inside
01:01:41So that works out well for barrichello you lose a bit of time having to turn in early
01:01:45But uh, kan kultad and david and michael schumacher
01:01:50Claire the jaguar before turn two any little tiny piece of traffic and there's a bit of gamesmanship, isn't it?
01:01:56They've gone back in again any tiny piece of traffic look and it has delayed them slightly
01:02:01It's absolutely critical at this stage as james said this pit stop will be critical and the in and out laps will be equally as critical
01:02:08Panis in from fifth position the gap between him and for stappan was 22
01:02:13Seconds the gap between him and reichen and ahead of him was 14. It was 11 seconds
01:02:19And so there's john alici coming in in the front from ninth position as out goes the bar
01:02:26Of olivier panis looks like a good stop back fifth position. He may well have retained the
01:02:33No, I don't think so. I think that uh,
01:02:36Verstappen's probably got through but verstappen, of course has got to make another stop
01:02:41Whereas panis will not but james, can you update us? Well, no, you called it a piece of gamesmanship
01:02:46It's exactly what it was the ferrari mechanics coming out mclaren guys looking ready to respond. It's like a chessboard
01:02:52They know these mechanics down here. They know that they could well decide the outcome of this race
01:02:56It could swing any one of three ways fantastic atmosphere
01:02:59I can't remember a race which would hinge just as this will hinge on the pit stop
01:03:04Well, there is panis back in the hunt in the honda powered bar
01:03:08Both the jordans are out
01:03:10Of course
01:03:10There's four honda powered cars the two bars and the two jordans a tremendous battle between them all the way through the season
01:03:18Because they both want honda patronage next year and jordan
01:03:21I would have said they've got the best chance for bar doing best here and ferrari are out again
01:03:26And then we didn't see the last lap, but barricada lost a half a second to both kufar and schumacher
01:03:31There you can see they're much closer and I don't think they're sandbagging this time
01:03:36I believe one of the ferraris will definitely be in the pits this time around which one will it be?
01:03:42Verstappen is in the pits for his second stop, too. Will it be barricado? Will it be michael schumacher?
01:03:47There's nine tenths between the three of them. How far can kufar go on his fuel?
01:03:52And this is and it's schumacher schumacher in the pits
01:03:56From third position now it is up to rubens barrichello
01:04:02And david kufar to really get the hammer down now to try to improve their advantage as michael schumacher stops
01:04:09If I was ferrari i'd be asking uh, james
01:04:12Can you tell us anything? Well looking about 9.3 seconds would be an ideal stop pretty quick
01:04:16That was a really nice stop. He's in the game. He's really in the game here guys
01:04:20Yeah, remember they're two thirds of the way through the race
01:04:22So this shouldn't be too long for fuel james
01:04:24But if I was ferrari now i'd be asking barrichello to ease up
01:04:29On this next lap and try to hold kufar up if they want to bring championship leader. Michael schumacher into play
01:04:36Yeah, it's a tough one for paul rubens
01:04:37Of course, he's supposed to have equal rating with michael schumacher and you can see the salvo there of kimmy reichenman
01:04:44Who was in fourth place? They got a left rear wheel problem. It's cost him. I would think at least 10 seconds that and it
01:04:52Will have prejudiced his chance to stay ahead of olivier pannis as he exits the pit lane
01:04:59Yeah, he was about 10 seconds ahead of pannis
01:05:01We'll see where that shakes out
01:05:02But kufar really needs to get on it kufar's lost a half a second in the middle part of this lap
01:05:08Crucially and uh, I think I saw a bit of traffic in the background
01:05:11So not a great lap then for kufar just when he needs one and the second ferrari's in the pits marie
01:05:17Barrichello straight in at the end of the next lap and uh good moves there from both ferrari
01:05:23David kufar who won the brazilian grand prix and has been in the points at every other race this year leads in austria
01:05:31But as i've said in the past, it's a false dawn because rubens barrichello has made his stop
01:05:37Michael schumacher has made his stop
01:05:39We're on lap 48 out of 71 and david kufar has yet to come in. He's got to really really hit it in this lap
01:05:48Well, it's all down to the drivers then for the ferrari team. No more pit stops
01:05:52They can of course play the team tactics over the radio
01:05:55But can mclaren now pull out some kind of supersonic pit stop?
01:05:59How far can david kufar go on his fuel load? There's michael locking up a right front
01:06:05I would imagine into turn three on his out lap running a little bit wide. Look. Yes on the grass bad
01:06:11If that's the outlap, it's a replay. We don't know exactly when it was but not what michael needed
01:06:16And is david kufar coming in?
01:06:18No, he is not david kufar and in comes a jacques vielder from seventh position in the var
01:06:25As a lacey goes through here is race leader. David kufar and he's just done. He's just done the fastest lap of the race
01:06:32He's really pushing it one minute 10.8
01:06:35Under one minute 11.7
01:06:38One minute 11 seconds and that is an absolutely terrific race super fit david kufar
01:06:45He's really got his dander up and after that bad race that he had in spain last year when he fought his way through
01:06:52After a bad start up into fifth position to get two points louise goodman
01:06:56I said he was one pablo montoya one pablo race for the pies, but ultimately lows for you. What went wrong in the end?
01:07:01Uh, we lost hydraulic pressure and we lost the gears and floor and everything
01:07:05I got an alarm two corners before and I knew that was gonna be
01:07:08Tell me about that incident with michael schumacher
01:07:11Oh, you know, he broke quite late I break him late as well when I said he was going to go for the outside
01:07:15Uh when I went to break the bell a bit harder the bell was a bit long. It's been long all weekend
01:07:21and just like the rear tires and
01:07:23Wrong wife. Thanks for talking to us
01:07:25Uh, rubens barricano is still ahead of michael schumacher
01:07:30David kufar is still ahead of both of them but has yet to come in as eddie irvine in the points
01:07:36Does so in the jaguar our jaguar going to get their first world championship point this year
01:07:41Let's hope so
01:07:42But kufar won 10.9 that time around not quite as quick as the lap before but still significantly quicker
01:07:48Than schumacher or barrichello and this could just play beautifully into kufar's hands michael
01:07:55We think made a mistake on his own lap. That's why he's ended up
01:07:59The second of the price some 3.4 seconds down he is at the moment
01:08:04So that gives kufar a bit of breathing space but can yes
01:08:07Look here they come. Can they launch kufar back onto the track ahead of barrichello schumacher slightly out of play at this time
01:08:16traffic in the way crucial lap what drama as the
01:08:20McLaren mechanics with the tires in the heaters when they brought them out
01:08:23They've got those heaters off now and jorna lacey is in front of david kufar
01:08:28He must move over and let the mclaren through or david kufar is being balked and loses time and he gets past
01:08:33As he comes down to turn eight in this nine corner circuit and into the pit lane inside the white line
01:08:41And that is rubens barrichello
01:08:43Who is in second place with michael schumacher behind him david kufar james james
01:08:49It's going to be very marginal. We all know that he had a 25.2 seconds lead
01:08:53But of course his stationary time will be less. He's taking less fuel on board than the two ferraris did
01:08:58Did he do enough on his in lap? He's revving the engine gunning the engine eight point north. It's he might well do it
01:09:04Well, he's down the pit lane now. He's he's at the speed limit at the moment
01:09:08Now look for the ferraris on the right and it looks as though david kufar is going to do it
01:09:12He's coming up to the uphill section and I cannot see the ferrari yet. Yes. Look look
01:09:18david kufar still leads
01:09:21Barrichello is second schumacher is still third now david kufar has got to get the remaining heat into those tires
01:09:28But it looks to me as though he is safe
01:09:31He's now lap 51 out of 71 20 laps to go if david kufar wins this race
01:09:37It is going to be an absolutely magnificent drive from seventh on the grid after that bad qualifying session yesterday
01:09:45But now all the top three men have completed their single stop
01:09:49He'll be three or four corners getting his tires up to full operating temperature understanding exactly the car that's underneath him
01:09:56And then I think kutat has the faster car this afternoon
01:10:01They're all on exactly the same fuel load
01:10:03Of course, they're all fueled to go just to the end of this motor race kutat has track position. It takes
01:10:10Any teamwork of him being scuppered behind the ferraris out of play, of course and uh, that must be is that de la rosa?
01:10:17Is it pulling uh, no, it's de la rosa. Sorry. Yeah de la rosa pulling out of the race
01:10:22He was down in 12th place
01:10:24And uh, of course now the ferrari can still ease michael up into second place
01:10:29But kutat and mclaren are now controlling the race
01:10:33Well now what are going to be the ferrari orders as off goes veal now pit lane speeding penalty 10 seconds
01:10:39It's going to cost him while he's stationary plus the time that it takes him to get into the pit lane slow down to
01:10:45Mandatory 50 miles an hour and then accelerate out again. He was in eighth position. He's going to lose the place
01:10:52No, he may not because john alesi was 53 seconds behind him
01:10:56Good news for kimmy raikkonen in fourth place that long pit stop when they couldn't get the left rear on
01:11:01Still enabled him to stay in fourth place. So kutat leads by 1.3 last time around
01:11:08And michael schumacher from barricada michael schumacher 3.1 seconds further behind raikkonen
01:11:1425 seconds behind in fourth panis fifth verstappen in the final point scoring position. We'll be back very shortly
01:11:38Is
01:11:51He's
01:12:07Is
01:12:38Schumacher
01:12:44Oh
01:12:58But it's yellow
01:13:08Foreign
01:13:10What is wisdom
01:13:12Schumacher
01:13:14Foreign
01:13:36Lap 54 replay and michael schumacher nearly goes off. He just managed to collect the ferrari, but he's lost time
01:13:44And rubens barrichello is on a tremendous charge. Look at him second place
01:13:49And he's only a second behind david. Kulbarn. Look back and you see michael schumacher
01:13:55What are going to be the ferrari team orders? Are they going to let rubens barrichello stay ahead?
01:14:00Well, michael
01:14:00We've now seen two mistakes from him in the last corner last time around
01:14:04And also on the outlap that scuppered any chance he had of taking the lead
01:14:08Remember they were nose to tail virtually as they went in for the pit stop
01:14:12But cool thought has not got 10 points in his pocket at all
01:14:15Yeah, for whatever reason on this set of tires or in this stage of the race
01:14:20He has not appeared to have the advantage over barrichello
01:14:23In fact, it's swapped around now barrichello the faster by two or three tenths of a second and it's michael
01:14:30Who can't quite keep up? Yeah, it's amazing this formula one business. Remember david kulfard
01:14:34We showed him before the race began when he was talking about his awful seventh position on the grid for him
01:14:40And he said but never mind you don't get points for where you go on the grid
01:14:44You get points for where you finish in the race and we could still win it. That is optimum optimism and determination
01:14:51He could still win it. He's on lap 55. He's got 16 of these 2.7 mile laps to go
01:14:58But rubens barrichello there in the ferrari
01:15:01He's trying for his second grand prix victory
01:15:04The first one that he had was at hoppenheim last year when he came from 18th
01:15:08One eight 18th on the grid to win the race in appalling weather conditions
01:15:13I think the mclaren doesn't work as well with a fueler
01:15:15Remember at the beginning the race kulta passed by verstappen struggling to hang on yet
01:15:20Set a new fastest lap and a new lap record just before his pit stops on very low fuel
01:15:26And he'll be very relieved to find and there he is running wide in turn one again
01:15:30He'll be very relieved to find that he was actually a few hundreds faster last time around than his pursuer rubens barrichello
01:15:38Michael schumacher also now getting up to full racing speed. Yeah, you don't get points for the fastest lap
01:15:43I think you ought to do personally and one for pole position. That's my personal opinion
01:15:48But david coulthard nearly a second faster here today than he was last year when he put up the then
01:15:54Record lap and he's gone round in one minute to 10.8
01:15:58So that's nine tenths of a second quicker eddie irvine there in the jaguar
01:16:02He just saw him in seventh position going over the crest
01:16:05He's going to be caught and passed and lacked for the first time by david coulthard shortly
01:16:11And look at barrichello now the gap as they go across the line is still nine tenths of a second now
01:16:16Is eddie irvine going to move over and let the flying two first through?
01:16:20Well, he'll get the blue flags and there's been a little bit of needle between irvine and cool
01:16:24Recently they accused each other of blocking in qualifying and and david's felt eddie did not let him through as easily as he might
01:16:31Have done while he was lapping him in previous races. We'll see what happens this time around
01:16:36But barrichello and michael schumacher now
01:16:39Was a 111 for half a second quicker than cool time full time's got his work cut out
01:16:43I think we're seeing a little bit here also if it's much easier to chase than be chased especially on this racetrack
01:16:49The the fine line between loads of grip and the limit of the racetrack and a dusty trip through the gravel traps is
01:16:56Absolutely tiny and coulthard then trying to keep it on the road
01:17:00But those ferraris are not going to let him have it easily right on lap 57 now out of 71 12 of the 22 starters left
01:17:08David coulthard rubens barrichello michael schumacher. You've seen them together in the same shot
01:17:13In his fourth olivier pannis his fifth joshua stephan is sixth eddie irvine still just out of the point seventh position
01:17:20Of not yet to be lapped. He's about to be lapped field nerve is eighth in the second
01:17:25Alici is ninth 30 is in the 10th position
01:17:30And now barrichello is right with david coulthard
01:17:35And for the record 11th is button and 12th is heiter the rest of retard
01:17:39Coulthard losing eight tenths to michael schumacher and over half a second to barrichello
01:17:43He lost momentum in the last corner with the the jaguar in front of him barrichello having a clean run
01:17:49And this is the net result coulthard needs to get the hammer down now. He needs to try to get himself
01:17:54A one one and a half seconds advantage this next five laps is his opportunity to reassert himself in this race at the moment
01:18:01He's on the defensive. That's reichen and ford. Michael schumacher on the previous lap was faster than barrichello
01:18:08Faster than coulthard the gap is down to 2.7 seconds between coulthard leading michael schumacher third position
01:18:15Ferrari on 10 world championship points mcclaren on 10 world championship points coulthard on 10 world championship points
01:18:23And championship leader michael schumacher on four world championship points. He could still all change
01:18:30But kimi reichen and there is looking good for another points position
01:18:35He finished in sixth place this year in his first ever grand prix in australia
01:18:40He really is a man to watch and the rumors are that ferrari are after him
01:18:45One eleven five that time around for coulthard and quicker than barrichello. It's really
01:18:51Twoing and throwing up the front coulthard leads by 0.9. Michael schumacher further three seconds behind
01:18:57We're going to take a very short break. We'll be back to see how the final stages this race unfold
01:19:05Yo winning it from mickey lauda in 84 with the mclaren porsche
01:19:10and then
01:19:1185 and 86 ellen prost with the mclaren porsche
01:19:15In 98 hakim with mclaren mercedes and last year. There's also mika hakim
01:19:24Little schumacher
01:19:35Foreign
01:20:05The
01:20:36Schumacher
01:20:52And barrichello
01:21:06Martin clay
01:21:15About
01:21:1712 minutes for the
01:21:19Austrian grand prix and david coulthard you can see the gap there now as he turns into turn three
01:21:26Between him and the scarlet ferrari of rubens barrichello with michael schumacher starting to close on both of them
01:21:34It could be and probably will be a cliffhanger
01:21:37Finish barrichello gets a sniff of coulthard out of one towards turn two
01:21:42He's much quicker under braking for whatever reason is the ferrari on the mclaren?
01:21:46But uh coulthard having a nightmare afternoon in traffic always losing out accepting when it really mattered
01:21:52Remember those stunning one ten eight one ten nine laps
01:21:56He put in to launch himself ahead of barrichello and on barrichello's lap as coulthard made his pit stop barrichello
01:22:03Had two or three cars to pass and it gave
01:22:07Coulthard this comfort zone, but the rest of the afternoon
01:22:09He's always seemed to lose out just catching the traffic at the wrong time
01:22:13But when they're in clear air, he's still got a fraction of a second advantage over rubens and michael schumacher
01:22:20Just now 2.2 seconds down the road
01:22:22I've said this so many times before but i'll say it again
01:22:25Catching is one thing passing another and rubens barrichello is only just inching up on the mclaren and david coulthard
01:22:33Who's a very wily campaigner?
01:22:35He's driven in a heck of a lot of grand prix in his time and he can make that car in his
01:22:41113th grand prix with all his experience and determination
01:22:45Knowing that if he can finish first
01:22:47He's going to have four more world championship points than finishing second
01:22:51Can make that car very wide and make it very difficult for barrichello to pass him in which case barrichello could then have?
01:22:58michael schumacher in his wheel track, so it's
01:23:02ferrari second ferrari third mclaren leading
01:23:06Magnificent drive paul micah hackerman must be sitting in the garage now looking gloomily at the monitor and thinking that could have been me
01:23:14But he has had his day world champion in 1998 world champion in 1999
01:23:20And david coulthard has deferred to him not only in the championship but in the races
01:23:25Says many times in the past he richly deserves to do well and my goodness
01:23:30Isn't he doing well seventh on the grid first in the race?
01:23:33That's what I mean about turn two. Look how late barrichello is on the break
01:23:37I wouldn't really want to swap places with coulthard right now. This is massive massive pressure
01:23:43the the whole of the corporate world of mclaren and mercedes-benz and a couple of hundred million dollars worth of
01:23:50Annual budget sitting on his shoulders. He's got to drive it on the ragged edge one slip and it looks silly
01:23:56He cruises too much. He's going to be eaten alive by the two prancing horses that are menacingly
01:24:03Galloping along behind him. Can coulthard keep his head under pressure?
01:24:07He has done before can he continue to do it for the final eight laps of this race?
01:24:11And then will ferrari if barrichello can't have a go at coulthard will ferrari make him?
01:24:18Yield and give an extra two points to michael. Schumacher
01:24:22P2 to barrichello
01:24:24And that is his board now, but let us not forget. Micaela schumacher third position and on the previous lap
01:24:32He was half a second faster than either david coulthard or rubens barrichello
01:24:37He still is itching up the gap between himself and david coulthard is 1.5 seconds on lap 64
01:24:43Out of 71 on this very slippery track out of the race goes jensen button in the benetton
01:24:49Up come the fire marshals with flames licking out of the exhaust outlets
01:24:54They need to get the fire extinguisher on that very rapidly indeed before it takes hold
01:24:59Although it may be just an oil fire
01:25:01I heard barbecue sales have been very strong in the uk over this lovely sunny weekend and jensen decided to join in with you
01:25:08From 12th position only 11 left now heidfeldt is left. He's 11th. He's been lapped twice
01:25:14Bertie is 10th in the prost. He has been lapped twice. Alessi is ninth. Both the prosts are still running
01:25:20He's been lapped twice. Jacques Villeneuve is eighth and has been lapped. Irvine is seventh and has been lapped
01:25:26Jasper stappen is sixth has been lapped only five cars are on the same lap, which is lap 64
01:25:33And three of them are virtually together. This is the replay of the engine locking up and spinning
01:25:38Jensen button out of the racing gulfed in flames at the back. They die down pretty quickly. He's out of the car
01:25:44He's okay engine sees there may be some oil and uh
01:25:48That is luciano bertie then
01:25:51Spinning himself out in turn one. That is not where button went off
01:25:55I'm wondering if there's any oil where button went off to let hide felt through and they were on the same lap
01:26:01So the saubers are now 10th position for nick heidfeldt and fourth position for the magnificent
01:26:07Kimi raikkonen as michael schumacher is now bearing down joe ramirez on the left the veteran man at
01:26:15McLaren is one of the top people in formula one
01:26:18Absolutely in thrall with how his man is doing his man being david kohlfeldt lap 65
01:26:25And the scott from twynham with the sultana proudly on his helmet
01:26:30I cannot find the words to say what a superb job
01:26:33David has done and is doing to resist the pressure now, but now we're getting to the crunch point
01:26:39Is rubens barrichello going to move over and let michael schumacher take up the attack because schumacher is lapping faster
01:26:47Than rubens barrichello only a tenth of a second or so, but every tenth counts turn one kohlfeldt turn one barrichello turn one
01:26:56That's how close it is michael schumacher, isn't it amazing three different drivers two teams a totally different philosophy different engines the whole
01:27:05Ethos of formula one is you must create your own car and that's why they're so different despite very tight regulation
01:27:12and yet still
01:27:1466 laps into the race. We've got 2.8 seconds between the three cars
01:27:20They are so so close so evenly matched
01:27:22Yeah, and how the caron have closed up on ferrari james allan ferrari technical director ross braun sitting on the pit wall
01:27:29He has a button for each radio either side of his belt. He pushes the button. He speaks to both drivers
01:27:34He's been talking to both of them constantly
01:27:35But barrichello must be dreading the push on his button, which is going to tell him to move over out of the way
01:27:40They've done it before here
01:27:41They did it with irvine two years ago as I recall just to get an extra couple of points for michael schumacher
01:27:46There could be no doubt they're going to do it today
01:27:47Not half as much as button and his button because he was out of that car like a jackrabbit when he saw that the back
01:27:53Of it had caught fire rightly
01:27:54So luciano berti is being caught to be lapped by raikkonen raikkonen in fourth place another sterling performance
01:28:02luciano berti down in 11th position and the fin goes through the brazilian driver moves over and
01:28:09Rubens barrichello just puts his left rear off the track onto the grass raises a puff of dust
01:28:16He may have lost just a hundredth or a tenth of a second. That will help michael schumacher
01:28:20There he is turn two 40 miles an hour
01:28:24Down goes his foot on comes the traction control
01:28:27Limiting the revs that get through to the rear wheel as much as is necessary and look how close it is now between second and third
01:28:36Two ferraris together I say again 10 world championship points for the for the ferrari team
01:28:4210 world championship points for the mclaren team if they stay where they are. This is lap 67
01:28:4868 69 70 and 71 to go very little time left. I think david coulthard can do it
01:28:56Just a couple of tenths on this lap. I obviously had a bit of a difficult corner somewhere in the middle sector
01:29:02What is a very very short lap, of course?
01:29:05So uh coulthard 1.6 second lead last time around it's clearly significantly less this time
01:29:11down to 1.1
01:29:12So coulthard having a bit of a scruffy lap a lot of very very poor
01:29:17Final sector and coulthard once again murray back under pressure. Yeah back under pressure, but he is the man to resist it
01:29:25He knows that that clear track ahead of him means that he can choose his line
01:29:29He's not got any problem is it closing up on people at the present moment if he can keep it cool
01:29:35Stay on stay on the racing line. The speed differential between the mclaren and the ferrari is not enough
01:29:40Maybe we're going to see why it was a scruffy lap
01:29:42Although I think this is up into turn one and it was in the middle sector. He lost it
01:29:46I think it's just one of those uh, slow-mo replay jobbies. They like to give us to just check with on our toes murray
01:29:53but uh
01:29:55Again then slower in the first sector of this lap
01:29:57We'll be getting the second sector up on our computers anytime soon doesn't look too bad for him
01:30:02Does it no but but both rubens barrichella and michael schumacher have gone faster in that sector by two tenths of a second
01:30:09Than david did you can see now you can see the amount of tarmac between the mclaren there and the two ferraris behind him
01:30:17He's diminishing but that's another lap that david has completed another lap that he has not got to do
01:30:24He's on lap 69 now
01:30:26He's only got this one and the two others after it to complete the lap now
01:30:31Have we got a new fastest lap again? No, it's still david coulthard one minute 10.8
01:30:361.8 seconds only separates the top three
01:30:40reikonen is 38 seconds behind the leaders four
01:30:44Panis is 47 seconds behind the leaders fifth and the bar
01:30:48Joss verstappen has got eddie irvine catching him
01:30:51There's only 5.2 seconds in it and eddie irvine is doing it at the rate of half a second a lap. It's not enough
01:30:57It looks as though arrows are going to get that world championship point for sixth place and that jaguar are not
01:31:03They both deserve it. Only one of them can get it
01:31:07Whoa slap 69
01:31:10Out of the nikki lauda curve into the garrard berger curve
01:31:13Coulthard responds the fastest man of anybody on any of your previous 68 laps through the middle sector of the lap
01:31:20Coulthard knows he had a couple of untidy ones put himself back under pressure and he's responded and said okay catch me if you can
01:31:29Well 28 world championship point for david coulthard
01:31:32Will become 38 if he wins this race
01:31:3536 points for schumacher will become 40. Talk about head-to-head. Look at this 111.00
01:31:42111.099 for barrichello and 111.030 for michael schumacher
01:31:48There was a total of six hundreds of a second between all three of their last lap
01:31:54So, uh, really coulthard just cannot break away from this pressure
01:31:58No, he can't break away, but he's on lap 70 now if he can just hang on he's only got
01:32:042.7 miles to go at the end of this lap to give him an absolutely brilliant victory
01:32:11It would be the 11th of his career and certainly one of the most richly deserved
01:32:17well
01:32:18Ferrari don't look too confident as out of the nikki lauda curve into the garrard berger curve up to turn
01:32:26seven in this nine turn course goes david coulthard over the
01:32:32Crest and just look michael schumacher is with barrichello
01:32:37Unless one of them goes off. I cannot see there being a change on this last lap
01:32:41I've said that sort of thing before only for it to change dramatically
01:32:45They are now on their 71st and last laps turn one eight turns to go
01:32:52climb climb climb seventh gear
01:32:54185 miles an hour brake hard down to second gear 40 miles an hour coming up to turn two
01:33:01This is it
01:33:03seven corners to go for mike for david coulthard
01:33:07Will rubens barrichello be told and will he do as he's told more importantly?
01:33:12and uh
01:33:13Is that a cruising barrichello? No, it isn't just taking a slightly different line surely before the end of the lap
01:33:18He will have to let michael schumacher go past. I believe he will get that call
01:33:24As does I know james down in the pit lane
01:33:27But coulthard then appears to have the fresh air between himself and the two ferraris that he needs barrichello is going to make
01:33:35Michael wait until the absolute last moment if he's going to do it at all
01:33:39And there are just two corners left in the austrian grand prix of 2001
01:33:44For david coulthard now as he sweeps out of the right hander down to the last corner of the circuit and the race
01:33:51And david coulthard wins and michael schumacher is second
01:33:56Wow, there is team orders michael schumacher
01:34:00Gets six world championship points david coulthard gets ten and a bitterly bitterly unhappy
01:34:08rubens barrichello defers at the last moment
01:34:12He will not be at all happy about that
01:34:15But remember when david deferred to mika hackenen as they approached the line in the australian grand prix
01:34:22Well, that's about a reason one of coulthard's great wins from seventh place on the grid
01:34:27I don't know what the opposite of brain fade is but uh, surely coulthard was the master this afternoon
01:34:34And uh, really a stunning drive from him did what he had to do when he had to do it kept his head under supreme pressure
01:34:42Barrichello will be on the podium with a face like a wet monday morning and deservedly
01:34:47So I think with a little bit more luck in the traffic
01:34:50He could have won this race and there is the uh,
01:34:53synchronized swimming act of ferrari as michael crosses the line a half a car ahead of a
01:35:00Inevitably disgruntled rubens barrichello who made him work for it. Look didn't he right to the last few meters?
01:35:05Well, there's nothing new about it. I remember when
01:35:08Senna in canada moved across at the last moment rather grumpily on orders from ron dennis to let geir hardberger win the race
01:35:16And this is a team sport I keep reminding people and the team knows that
01:35:22Michael schumacher has got a better chance of winning the world championship for drivers than rubens barrichello has because
01:35:30Michael schumacher had 36 points when this race began rubens barrichello was 22 behind him and james allen is in the pit
01:35:37Martin brundle just described that little switch is synchronized swimming. It had to be done there ross
01:35:42we got a championship and
01:35:45We're hoping rubens could have a go at him, but it just wasn't quite there and obviously the starts were our main problem
01:35:52But uh
01:35:54That was a good race, but not the way we wanted it
01:35:56It was a very good race and for once mclaren not for once
01:35:59They've done it a few times to you
01:36:00They actually did you on the strategy in a way didn't they the pit stops?
01:36:02They they ran it they got the lead and they managed to keep it. Well, it wasn't a voluntary choice
01:36:07I mean, obviously everyone's running to maximum capacity
01:36:10And uh, I think coming with mclaren that was as far as we could go so there's nothing much else to do
01:36:17And montoya obviously screwed michael's race
01:36:20Otherwise, we wouldn't be in that position, but it's a load race road racing. So
01:36:25We'll recover. Thanks very much russ. Well
01:36:28Michael schumacher started this race eight points ahead of david coulthard
01:36:32He is now four points ahead of david coulthard as a result of that superlative drive by the scotsman
01:36:38And rubens barry kello deferring on team orders to michael schumacher. You've heard ross braun say why?
01:36:44Barry, kello is still in third position and ralph schumacher is still fourth
01:36:49Nick, heidfeld is still in fifth position and yano trulli is still sixth
01:36:53But really that's of academic interest from now on it looks as though the 2001 world championship
01:37:00As we go to monaco in two weeks time for the seventh out of 17 races
01:37:05Is going to be down between michael schumacher and david coulthard
01:37:10Driver of the day david coulthard. That's part a part b driver of the day. Kimi raikkonen just 40 seconds behind the leaders
01:37:18in his
01:37:19Sauber petronas with of course the customer ferrari engine in fourth place there as I said, so raikkonen a stunning day
01:37:27And uh, well, they don't look such bad friends after all do they coulthard and eddie irvine and villeneuve coming another good mate of david's
01:37:34And uh coming in everybody wants to shake his hand. Yeah, that's the fifth
01:37:39world championship points for the sauber team this year and
01:37:45I I bitterly regret some of the things I said about the team and them not expecting me not expecting them to do
01:37:51Well this year before the season began
01:37:54Well rubens barry kello, you can look at it. Look at his eyes
01:37:58He's not happy he's not happy at all. Why should he be why should he be drove a terrific race?
01:38:03He was ahead of michael schumacher. Joe ramirez taps him on the shoulder. John tot has a word with him
01:38:10What do you think the word was?
01:38:11Maybe the check should be bigger next time rubens
01:38:15Yes, well, I don't think ruben rubens
01:38:18Like a lot of people is interested in money, but he's interested in prestige. He got ahead of michael schumacher
01:38:24He was staying ahead of michael schumacher
01:38:26But I say again and you heard what ross braun had to say
01:38:30there is a world championship involved and michael schumacher is more likely to win it than barry keller is
01:38:36It matters to ferrari. It matters to maranello. It matters to fiat. Of course, who are the money behind ferrari?
01:38:43so it is
01:38:44Understandable, even if it is very bad news for rubens barry keller
01:38:48But wonderful wonderful news for david coulthard his 11th victory
01:38:53Terrible news for mika hakkanen olivier panis finished us in fifth position and has again
01:39:00Beaten his teammate jack villeneuve
01:39:03And it was a very close thing between in the world championship for them because panis was in 11th place
01:39:10And villeneuve was in ninth position and panis should have actually moved ahead of him in the constructors championship
01:39:17there is now
01:39:1818 points between ferrari and mclaren as there was when this race began
01:39:24Williams, of course have scored no points. Jordan has scored no points
01:39:29Sauber in scoring a close right up to jordan. Just one point ahead. Well done
01:39:36His 11th win a great great great great race for a great great scottish gentleman
01:39:43And the british national anthem for david coulthard and of course for the mclaren team
01:40:13So
01:40:15So
01:40:42Now the end of a great race which was
01:40:46Won by a mercedes-benz engine and a very serious word here
01:40:50The mercedes-benz engine is made by the ilmore concern
01:40:55In britain at brixworth and sadly paul morgan the mor part of ilmore with his partner
01:41:03mario illion
01:41:04Was killed in an air crash yesterday and formula one agrees for him and our hearts go out to everybody who knew
01:41:12And was involved with paul and his family
01:41:16He said he was not with the mario yesterday when he was killed
01:41:20Mario has flown back to the uk but sadly as you say paul morgan died michael schumacher then second place
01:41:28And rubens barry keller
01:41:31In third position he has the trophy to take home
01:41:34another
01:41:35Four world championship points for the brazilian
01:41:39But it was david coulthard's day
01:41:41Was mclaren's day
01:41:51But victory for david coulthard ahead of michael schumacher and rubens barry keller at the end of a really inspiring
01:41:59And of course david calls that abstaining from that procedure in respect for paul morgan
01:42:04So
01:42:09In two weeks time it is the
01:42:12monaco grand prix
01:42:14But here in austria, you can see the triumphant trio there on the podium
01:42:21All righty, thanks to martin. He was certainly due david coulthard a winner in austria at last his brain in gear throughout a superb race
01:42:30We'll hear from david in a few minutes time from michael schumacher and from rubens barry keller to absolutely delighted alexander
01:42:36Verts, he's going to join us in the studio. There's our competition result and ross kemp as the jordan mccaff

01:43:09Hi, he's the developer
01:43:16The
01:43:30Stats
01:43:38Foreign
01:43:46The one
01:43:59Congratulations
01:44:02Gentlemen first second and third in the austrian grand prix david coulthard the winner michael schumacher in second and rubens barry keller in third place
01:44:10David mika hacken and said earlier today that it's a very sad weekend for mclaren
01:44:16But at the end of it you brought uh, at least some cheer to the team
01:44:20Yeah, and that's uh, just to explain why I wasn't spraying the champagne for for those at home
01:44:24We don't realize we lost a very important member of the the uh, the team paul morgan this weekend
01:44:29and
01:44:30and
01:44:31Winning this grand prix. I think is a big boost for everyone in the team
01:44:35Now looking at the way the race ran you ran an incredibly long first stint longer than anyone else
01:44:40And then you emerged in the lead. Was that the tactic from fairly early on in proceedings?
01:44:46Yeah
01:44:47From where I was in the grid obviously having qualified seventh
01:44:49It was important to to start heavy and just to have the options open depending on how the race went
01:44:55I was able to lean the engine out early on after the first few laps and save quite a
01:45:00Few laps of fuel as well as obviously with the safety car and that enabled us to go quite long
01:45:06David thank you very much
01:45:09Michael um, you didn't have the dream start to the race from pole position
01:45:12You were led away by both williamses. Can you put your finger on why you dropped back?
01:45:19Not really we had some kind of problem
01:45:22Certainly the car didn't start in the way it was supposed to start and basically I didn't manual start afterwards because
01:45:29there is some kind of problems, but i'm sure we will find out and
01:45:33you know, all these systems are still very new and
01:45:36Like we have seen with david something happened to him in barcelona with these systems now it happened to me
01:45:41And I guess a few other people will still get surprises until everything is really reliable
01:45:46Having worked your way up to second place after your brother retired
01:45:50There was then the moment with uh, Juan Pablo Montoya that took both of you off the circuit
01:45:54Could you talk us through that move?
01:45:58I was a little bit upset obviously because
01:46:01There was no way he could make that corner and all he was trying to do is to to
01:46:05Take me me with him out of the circuit and I mean he was lost anyway and to do something to me
01:46:11To do something to me then I thought it wasn't really
01:46:14What he should have done because I I had to go into the grass. I couldn't turn in I nearly hit him
01:46:18uh, so
01:46:20He was wasn't ideal, but that's the way it had had gone and i'm sure be sure I will have a work with him
01:46:27But that meant that I was I think in sixth or seventh position and I had to make my I had to work my
01:46:32Way through the traffic which wasn't easy because the michelin drivers had problems with their tires
01:46:38So it would have been normally
01:46:40Sooner or later. I would have passed
01:46:42Juan Pablo, but the other guys were on bridgetons and that was much more difficult
01:46:46I had to wait until they did a few mistakes
01:46:48and then I took my chance to Panis and to Raikkonen which both behaved very accurate and
01:46:55That allowed me to
01:46:56Come back into the race and pick up to the two guys in front
01:47:01Michael, thank you very much
01:47:04Rubens
01:47:05You were second until the last corner
01:47:09And then you pulled over to let michael through why was that?
01:47:12The team has asked me to to do that
01:47:17Are you very unhappy about that?
01:47:19No, i'm i'm unhappy about the situation. I was uh winning
01:47:23uh, almost a whole grand prix and then of course, uh, david went longer and
01:47:28I lost the race basically like that
01:47:30That's that's why i'm i'm feeling unhappy
01:47:33Thank you
01:47:34Thank you. Rubens
01:47:35David back to you. The deficit was eight points to michael before the start of the race now
01:47:39It's halved to four points going to monaco
01:47:43What do you think about the rest of the season?
01:47:46Excuse me. Well, I think as you can see
01:47:48The grand prix's are going to be very close
01:47:50not only between ourselves and ferrari, but
01:47:53Williams as well. So it's really going to come down to who gets their car and the tire working well in monaco
01:47:58But it's a circuit. I enjoy i've gone well down the pass. So
01:48:00You know, there's everything to play for
