00:00:00You're back with us on a beautiful spring day in Ferrari country, Imola, not far from Bologna in northern Italy
00:00:06Watch out for a super competition after the race
00:00:09But now enjoy the San Marino Grand Prix on ITV with Martin Brundle and Murray Walker. Afternoon, Murray
00:00:16Afternoon, Jim. I'm in my usual state up here. High tension
00:00:21Heart beating like a trip hammer, whatever that is
00:00:24Well, four degrees on Thursday. It was when we arrived here
00:00:29Very very much anorak time and raincoat time. Look at it now, blazing sunshine, blue skies
00:00:3614 degrees and that is good for Michelin. Now the Michelin tires
00:00:43Go better in the heat. Look at Brazil
00:00:46They were really really worried on Thursday, Friday and yesterday to a great extent. They're much happier now
00:00:54especially
00:00:55Master Ralf Schumacher, third on the grid
00:00:59It isn't actually the first time he's qualified in Formula One ahead of his brother Michael
00:01:05But it hasn't happened very many times. Now the prospects for the start here are absolutely incredible
00:01:11There he is, David Kulfaer. The last time he was in pole position here at Imola, he won the race, 1998
00:01:18Mika Hakkinen, there he is, really on the boil, totally focused. Wife Eirja here to
00:01:24Provide the support that he finds so very very helpful and behind them
00:01:29With arguably the greatest power of all, the BMW engine in the Williams
00:01:36Ralf Schumacher ready. He hopes to burst through at the start, take the lead, take advantage of his
00:01:43Tires and get away
00:01:45But not if brother Michael can do anything to stop him. Look at him, fourth on the grid, Rubens Barrichello behind him
00:01:52Sixth on the grid. What's your reading?
00:01:54I think this is a very very difficult race to read, Murray. Clearly the McLarens are working better as we've seen
00:02:01In Brazil too. Ferrari on the harder tyre, we know the only team to go that route
00:02:06I think the dark horses are very much the BMW Williams on their Michelin tyres
00:02:12The Jordans, Eddie said watch out for our men
00:02:14But I think they'll be keeping a watching brief rather than really getting in the thick of the action
00:02:19And because of the wet dry nature of the weekend
00:02:22I don't think anybody absolutely knows for sure. Michael's been being
00:02:25Supremely confident that he is on the right tyre and everybody else is on the wrong tyre
00:02:29That may prove to be the case as the afternoon goes on. Track temperatures are up, but it's not a significant factor
00:02:36I don't believe at this time
00:02:38So really difficult to call. Who might be one stopping in there?
00:02:42I'm sure James is taking you through some of this already
00:02:44But Montoya must be the biggest candidate to do that down there in seventh place
00:02:49The rest of them, this race has almost always won on a two-stopper
00:02:52It's just a question of what will Michael Schumacher do to try to maximize his relatively lowly grid position of fourth and
00:03:01Get ahead of the McLarens and that's going to be absolutely fascinating
00:03:04Yeah, let's just remind ourselves what this one-stop, two-stop, three-stop stuff is all about
00:03:09I've had it suggested that teams like Arrows and Joseph Verstappen is down
00:03:1417th on the grid, his teammate Bernaldi 16th as we look at Michael Schumacher
00:03:19Might even go three stops because by so doing you can start off with a much lighter fuel load
00:03:25Take advantage of that to get ahead of the people who are on a heavier fuel load in front of you
00:03:30And if you've timed it right it can work out well at the end
00:03:33I would be very surprised if that happened as Martin says
00:03:37Everybody last year that mattered did two stops, but you never know especially
00:03:42with Ross Brawn the Ferrari
00:03:44Tactician and Michael Schumacher his ally in the cockpit because they have pulled some flankers in the past
00:03:51Which have been brilliantly successful
00:03:54The Sun continues to shine I do believe there's going to be no problem at all with the weather here as the grid is
00:04:00Clearing because it is blue skies overhead blazing sunshine this track just over three miles long
00:04:07You're going to see it and Martin will talk you around
00:04:10But it is a course which unlike a lot of them these days
00:04:14Has the benefit the advantage the excitement of not only every kind of corner but gradient as well
00:04:21Both uphill and downhill. Yes, and it's an anti-clockwise circuit and unusually
00:04:26Pole on the left-hand side there
00:04:28Although it's a left-hander first because it's bumpy particularly on the right-hand side of the track the line
00:04:33Tends to be all the way down the left
00:04:35So pole position man gets the cleanest side of the racetrack because that's David Coulthard
00:04:41And they'll all try and lay a little bit of whatever type of rubber
00:04:45They're on down on their grid hatching to give them a bit of extra bite next time around
00:04:51And everybody's got away. All right
00:04:54I'm just looking out of the window at the grid as I talk to you as they go into the first
00:05:00chicane the Tamburello
00:05:02Which is where Ayrton Senna so tragically lost his life and there were two or three
00:05:06Chicanes put in as a result of that to slow things down a bit and this is the veal nerve chicane
00:05:12Before Tosa the left-hander but a Formula 3000 car dropped it on the exit of of that Tamburello chicane
00:05:18It's an enormous crash in the wall. So it's still a very very fast area particularly on the exit
00:05:23They're now heading uphill
00:05:25Over the blind crest into Pirate. Oh, that's a wonderful corner really beckons you in and says right attack
00:05:31We have some fun through here and a Formula One car works
00:05:34Beautifully and then just falls down as a much steeper hill than it appears there from this
00:05:39Helicam shot that first aqua Minerali can be a bit tricky. A lot of people get caught out there
00:05:44It's a little bit bumpy on the way in later in the race
00:05:47It tired or your tires a little bit used in second hand
00:05:50It's easy to run wide through there and then you're guaranteed to have an accident and stay in the gravel trap
00:05:55then the high chicane the Variante Alta and
00:05:59New patch of tarmac in there a couple three years ago just on the exit and again providing
00:06:04You don't launch too heavily across the curbs
00:06:06You've got to use the curbs
00:06:07But you've got to somehow bring the car down in an even way front and rear so you can get straight back on the power
00:06:13Again, and then a big downhill
00:06:16Sweeping stop into
00:06:18Rivazza one and all you're looking at there is the wall ahead of you and often Marshall's you can see Marshall's and other people
00:06:24It's a straight ahead position. There is not good at all, but a lot of grip under braking Rivazza two then then an easy
00:06:32170 miles an hour right-hand sweep before you have to punish the brakes and
00:06:38Slow down just one final time towards the end of the lap
00:06:42Yeah, David Coulthard starting well
00:06:45He's well ahead at the present moment
00:06:46But he'll slow down because the last thing that he wants is for the grid to take a long time to form 22 starters
00:06:53Yes, I think David's probably arrived at his grid slot a bit too early there. He really needed to back that pack up
00:06:59He's going to be an awful long time sitting on pole position
00:07:03Does that matter of course it matters if you overheat the clutch and you have difficulty engaging first gear
00:07:08Which they probably won't do until the first of the five red lights come on and I remind you about the starting procedure
00:07:15Lights one at a time until all five are on then there's a pre-programmed pause when they go out
00:07:20It is go David Coulthard on the right Mikko Häkkinen on the left
00:07:25This grid is still forming watch Ralph Schumacher in the white
00:07:30Blue Williams BMW the man with a yellow helmet as the tail end Tarso Marquez lines up on the grid
00:07:3822nd the lights in the top left corner of your screen 62 laps one on two on three on
00:07:45four on
00:07:46five pause
00:07:48And it's go it's go and it's good for David Coulthard
00:07:52And Ralph Schumacher is already past Häkkinen
00:07:55And he's got a lead, he's done it, fabulous
00:07:59Ralph Schumacher is now going to use that grunt to pull away the Williams BMW
00:08:05From Coulthard and the top, Jordan has also gone ahead in third position
00:08:12That's Jarno Trulli, so two dramatic changes right at the start of the San Marino Grand Prix
00:08:18Williams BMW, Ralph Schumacher leads
00:08:21And then behind him in second place it is the McLaren of David Coulthard
00:08:26Then it's Jarno Trulli, Mikko Häkkinen down from second to fourth
00:08:29And Michael Schumacher down from fourth to fifth
00:08:32What an opening!
00:08:33Coulthard then, too much wheel spin on the start, I think he rolled slightly early
00:08:37The red lights were on for a very, very long time
00:08:40Hopefully there's been no jump starts
00:08:42But Coulthard lighting up the rear wheels, Ralph getting the perfect start
00:08:47Slotting down the inside
00:08:48And while we said those Williams could well be dark horses
00:08:51This is a dream start for them
00:08:54So where is Juan Pablo Montoya in the other Williams BMW?
00:08:59Can't tell you at the present moment
00:09:01All I can tell you is that Matsukane is last at the present moment
00:09:05He's already been passed by Jenson Button and by Taso Marquez in the European Minardi
00:09:11So there is Häkkinen, there is Schumacher and there is Montoya going through
00:09:16Look for the Williams, there's Schumacher
00:09:18And Montoya is ahead of Panis in the BAR who started in front of him
00:09:24Yes, that was a good run
00:09:25It's very unusual to see an overtaking maneuver into that final chicane
00:09:29Just shows the straight line speed of that Williams
00:09:31And look, Ralph Schumacher pulling away
00:09:340.9 of a second lead at the end of lap 1
00:09:37And Montoya already on his way through the field up into P6
00:09:41Michael Schumacher is his next target
00:09:43And look, truly off the road, he should just save that
00:09:46He should keep his position
00:09:48He'll be a bit of a handful when he gets to the top of Piratella
00:09:51And Rubens Barrichello is dropping back
00:09:54He started 6th in the Ferrari
00:09:56He is now in 8th position
00:09:58He's been passed by Montoya
00:10:00He has been passed by Olivier Panis
00:10:02And Barrichello really does need to impress in this race
00:10:06Well, apparently there is an investigation underway for potential jump start
00:10:12I don't know who that might be
00:10:13But we'll have to wait and see
00:10:15We'll keep an eye on the computer
00:10:17Could have been Ralph, of course, with that stunning start
00:10:19Kulkar was definitely looking like he edged forwards
00:10:23But I don't know if that was after the light
00:10:26And here's a replay
00:10:27So that's a little bit too late to check for a jump start
00:10:30But it just shows you the way that Williams catapulted off the line
00:10:34And then truly making it stick up the inside of Hakkinen
00:10:37To take 3rd place
00:10:39Power with a capital P
00:10:40Now here's Schumacher again
00:10:41Watch him, right hand side
00:10:43He gets right alongside the white line
00:10:45All the cars have got an electrical sensor underneath them
00:10:48In the track to see whether they move before they should
00:10:51I don't think it was Kulkar
00:10:52I think what we're watching here
00:10:54That was Kulkar lighting up his tyres
00:10:56I think it would be a BAR that jumped the start
00:10:59If I had to make a guess
00:11:00But we think it's one of the BARs that jumped the start
00:11:05So that could well be Pannis
00:11:07Well, the BARs were 8th and 11th
00:11:09Pannis starting in front of Villeneuve
00:11:12As he has done before this season
00:11:14Honours even
00:11:15Two starts in front for Villeneuve
00:11:17Two starts in front for Pannis
00:11:19And the race is now starting to settle down a bit
00:11:21Ralph Schumacher has obviously made the fastest lap of the race
00:11:25It's early days, we're on lap 3
00:11:27But already he is leading David Coulthard
00:11:29From pole position, Coulthard
00:11:31By 1.4 seconds
00:11:33Jarno Trulli is 3.6 seconds
00:11:35Look, look, look at the gap down there
00:11:37As the Williams BMW streaks away
00:11:40And in 4th position
00:11:42It's Häkkinen ahead of Schumacher and Montoya
00:11:45So it is exactly as Williams, BMW, Schumacher
00:11:49And I'm going to call him Ralph from now on
00:11:52It's going to get very confusing if I don't
00:11:54So Ralph is the man in the lead
00:11:56And Ralph is Schumacher
00:11:58Now, what we don't know of course
00:12:00For any of these cars
00:12:01Is what their strategy is
00:12:03Strategy and tyres are that vital
00:12:06All important
00:12:07Here is the race leader
00:12:08Is he on one stop?
00:12:10Is he on two stops?
00:12:11There is the second man
00:12:12David Coulthard
00:12:13Jarno Trulli
00:12:15Micah Häkkinen
00:12:16Michael Schumacher
00:12:17Pablo Montoya
00:12:19Pannis
00:12:20And Barrichello
00:12:23Well, certainly the speed of Schumacher
00:12:25He's over half
00:12:267 tenths of a second faster
00:12:28On that lap than David Coulthard
00:12:30Who's another 7 tenths faster than anybody else
00:12:34So Schumacher and Coulthard at the front
00:12:36Just easing away
00:12:37And look, the Ferraris are now nose to tail
00:12:39That must mean there's been a mistake
00:12:41Or Montoya has
00:12:43Something's happened
00:12:45Because we've got the Ferraris now
00:12:47Michael Schumacher has dropped down to 6th place
00:12:49Montoya is ahead of him
00:12:52Yes he is
00:12:53And according to the track
00:12:54There he is
00:12:55There is Montoya
00:12:56Behind him is Pannis
00:12:57So he's coming through the field
00:12:59It's Juan Pablo Montoya
00:13:01The Colombian
00:13:02Who has been so sensational already this season
00:13:05He's starting to make his way up through the field
00:13:07He started in 7th position
00:13:09He's now 5th
00:13:10Yes, well I'd like to see a replay of that
00:13:12Either Michael's made a mistake
00:13:13He has
00:13:14And yes, look
00:13:15Very, very slow
00:13:16Out of the last corner, Michael
00:13:18Lost a lot of drive
00:13:19And then clearly
00:13:20Picks it back up again
00:13:21So, some
00:13:22Some kind of gearbox problem then
00:13:24We think even Barrichello now
00:13:26Has passed Michael Schumacher
00:13:28Does he have a gear shift problem?
00:13:30Well, remember
00:13:32Montoya passed
00:13:34Michael Schumacher
00:13:35Brilliantly in Brazil
00:13:37Yes, he's behind
00:13:38He's behind his teammate
00:13:39Barrichello Mari
00:13:40So, Michael Schumacher then
00:13:42Clearly with problems
00:13:43We're going to have a lot of people
00:13:45Leaving early this afternoon
00:13:46If the Ferraris don't do better than this
00:13:48Because they are
00:13:49Down, down, down
00:13:51Ralf Schumacher
00:13:52Lap 5
00:13:53Here he is
00:13:54He's whizzed well through
00:13:56That was Montoya
00:13:57Followed by Panis
00:13:58And you can see
00:13:59That they are
00:14:00Very close now
00:14:01And still obviously
00:14:02All 22 running
00:14:03Mazzucconi is last
00:14:04Marquez is last but one
00:14:06And the other
00:14:07Minardi is 20th
00:14:09Jenson Button is in 19th place
00:14:11So he's gained two places
00:14:13And Bernaldi in the arrows
00:14:15Has slipped down through the field a bit
00:14:17And Barrichello runs wide
00:14:19Michael Schumacher
00:14:21Had an opportunity to get past there
00:14:23But he was too far back
00:14:24They're in Tosa now
00:14:26That's about an 80 mile an hour corner
00:14:28Climbing up towards the Piratella
00:14:30Which they take at about
00:14:31100 miles an hour
00:14:32And then start to drop
00:14:33Downhill
00:14:34Over the crest now
00:14:35Here is Ralf Schumacher
00:14:37Nearly a three second lap
00:14:39Three second advantage
00:14:41Over David Kulfa
00:14:43Driving beautifully
00:14:44He has yet to win a Grand Prix
00:14:46Of course
00:14:47Ralf Schumacher
00:14:48Ex-Jordan
00:14:49Now with Williams
00:14:50Well we better hope
00:14:51Those Ferraris are on a one stop
00:14:52And very heavy with fuel
00:14:53In these early stages of the race
00:14:55The optimum stop point
00:14:56As I understand is about
00:14:58Lap 32
00:14:59I think they'll go
00:15:00Further than that
00:15:01If they are one stopping
00:15:02But at the moment
00:15:03They're 7th and 8th
00:15:04And already
00:15:0511 seconds behind
00:15:06This man
00:15:07Ralf Schumacher
00:15:08Your leader
00:15:09If they are two stopping
00:15:10I would expect them to come in
00:15:12In this 62 lap race
00:15:14As Ralf Schumacher
00:15:16Roundabout lap 27
00:15:18And the roundabout lap 48
00:15:20That's the battle between
00:15:21Trulli and Häkkinen
00:15:22Followed by Montoya
00:15:24In 5th position
00:15:25And the Ferraris
00:15:26In line abreast
00:15:28Down in 7th and 8th place
00:15:30And Michael Schumacher
00:15:31Is in 8th place now
00:15:3328 seconds now
00:15:35Covers the grid
00:15:36A field from Ralf Schumacher
00:15:38Leading to Matsukane
00:15:40In 22nd place
00:15:41Jenson Button
00:15:42Just to let you know
00:15:43Is down in 19th position
00:15:45Had a reasonable start
00:15:46Appears to have
00:15:47Lost one place
00:15:48He was 18th I think
00:15:49In the early stages
00:15:50So now
00:15:51Barrichello
00:15:52Collected himself up
00:15:53After that small mistake
00:15:54Homing in on Pannis
00:15:56But no information yet
00:15:57On who jumped the start
00:15:59If anybody
00:16:00Well there are a lot of
00:16:01Glum faces around me
00:16:02We're in the
00:16:03We're in one of the grandstands
00:16:04Opposite the garages
00:16:06And there are thousands
00:16:07Of Italians around us
00:16:08Very quiet
00:16:10And looking at
00:16:11Very very unhappy
00:16:12Because after all
00:16:13Michael Schumacher
00:16:14Had already won
00:16:15Six races on the trot
00:16:17And there is
00:16:19The BAR
00:16:21Chased by
00:16:22Barrichello
00:16:23The BAR of Olivier Pannis
00:16:25And Barrichello
00:16:26Leading Michael Schumacher
00:16:27And the two Ferraris
00:16:28As I said before
00:16:30Way down the field
00:16:31They're not even in the points
00:16:32At the present moment
00:16:33Point, a puff of smoke there
00:16:35From the back of
00:16:36The Honda powered BAR
00:16:38Of Frenchman Olivier Pannis
00:16:40Who incidentally
00:16:41Is showing the way
00:16:42To Jacques Villeneuve
00:16:43This season
00:16:44Villeneuve down in
00:16:45Tenth position
00:16:46Of 1997
00:16:47World
00:16:48Champion
00:16:49If Michael Schumacher
00:16:50Had a gearbox problem
00:16:51It appears to have
00:16:52Sorted itself out
00:16:53And the European
00:16:54Minardi
00:16:55Of Alonso
00:16:56As you point out
00:16:57Is
00:16:58Obviously
00:16:59Out of the race
00:17:00But
00:17:01We're going to see
00:17:02Why now
00:17:03Oh that's the kerb
00:17:04I was telling you about
00:17:05At the high chicane
00:17:06And you really can't use it
00:17:07As heavily as that
00:17:08And well that's made a miss
00:17:09Well that's the first race
00:17:10In four
00:17:11That the
00:17:12Minardi team
00:17:13Who struggled
00:17:14So hard
00:17:15Since Paul Stoddart
00:17:16Has taken them over
00:17:17To get onto the grid
00:17:18At all
00:17:19For the first race
00:17:20In Australia
00:17:21It's the first race
00:17:22Where they have had
00:17:23Any damage at all
00:17:24And hopefully
00:17:25That's not going to be
00:17:26Too expensive to fix
00:17:27Now look
00:17:28Pannis is definitely
00:17:29Holding up
00:17:30Barry Keller
00:17:31In seventh position
00:17:32I don't think he's
00:17:33Holding up Michael Schumacher
00:17:34There's quite a gap
00:17:35Between the two Ferraris
00:17:36Now
00:17:37But the gap
00:17:38Between
00:17:39Schumacher
00:17:40Who is fifth
00:17:41And Pannis
00:17:42Who is in sixth position
00:17:43Is just about
00:17:44One and a half seconds
00:17:45Well Pannis
00:17:46Getting very ragged
00:17:47But he's got the
00:17:48Inside line now
00:17:49Into the Variante Alta
00:17:50And
00:17:51And they can't overtake
00:17:52Anyway
00:17:53Yellow flags are waving
00:17:54For Alonso's Minardi
00:17:55That hasn't been
00:17:56Cleared away yet
00:17:57So
00:17:58Rightly so
00:17:59Ruben's backed off
00:18:00But Pannis
00:18:01Had the line anyway
00:18:02Martin let me just try
00:18:03A wild one on you
00:18:04I don't think
00:18:05This is the case
00:18:06Clutching for straws
00:18:07On behalf of Ferrari
00:18:08Enthusiasts
00:18:09Heavy fuel load
00:18:10That's why
00:18:11They're going slow
00:18:12Well I'm hoping so
00:18:13Otherwise
00:18:14They really have
00:18:15They've just made
00:18:16A big mistake
00:18:17On these tyres
00:18:18By judging them
00:18:19From the green track
00:18:20On Friday
00:18:21You've got to look
00:18:22At their pace
00:18:23Which is in the
00:18:241.29s
00:18:25Now
00:18:26Coulthard is
00:18:27On 28.0
00:18:28So
00:18:29Some one and a half
00:18:30Seconds a lap
00:18:31Faster
00:18:32Is David Coulthard
00:18:33You've got to assume
00:18:34And hope
00:18:35Those Ferraris
00:18:36Are both on heavy fuel
00:18:37Oh and as
00:18:38Jos Verstappen
00:18:39In the arrows
00:18:40I was hypothesising
00:18:41Just might be on
00:18:42Three stops
00:18:43Starts coasting
00:18:44And
00:18:45Alonso
00:18:46Is out of the race
00:18:47It looks as though
00:18:48Verstappen is as well
00:18:49And look at
00:18:50Little Räikkönen there
00:18:51In the Sauber
00:18:52Hanging on
00:18:53With his Ferrari
00:18:54Customer Ferrari
00:18:55Engine there
00:18:56Hanging on
00:18:57To the two
00:18:58Works Ferraris
00:18:59Of Barrichello
00:19:00And Schumacher
00:19:01Of course
00:19:02So Räikkönen then
00:19:03Is in 9th place
00:19:04Coulthard has now
00:19:05Closed that lead down
00:19:06Here in the top 10
00:19:07Lap 8
00:19:08Ralf Schumacher leads
00:19:09David Coulthard
00:19:103rd is Trulli
00:19:114th is Häkkinen
00:19:125th is Montoya
00:19:136th is Paddis
00:19:147th is Barrichello
00:19:158th is Michael Schumacher
00:19:169th is Kimi Räikkönen
00:19:17And in 10th place
00:19:18Jacques Villeneuve
00:19:19In the B.A.R.
00:19:20And here are Paddis
00:19:21Barrichello
00:19:22Schumacher
00:19:236th, 7th, 8th
00:19:24Barrichello's got a great chance
00:19:25This time around
00:19:26He's going to have to try
00:19:27And go round the outside
00:19:28You've got to do it
00:19:29Rubens
00:19:30You've got to get past him
00:19:31He can't turn in on you now
00:19:32And that was a good move
00:19:33From Barrichello
00:19:34Had to do it
00:19:35I was going to say
00:19:36Can Michael follow through
00:19:37While Paddis is running wide
00:19:38But Olivier
00:19:39Who is a crafty campaigner
00:19:40He's been racing a long time now
00:19:41This is his 94th Grand Prix
00:19:42Shut the door in Michael's face
00:19:43Oh no, you're not going to
00:19:44And as you say, Michael
00:19:45Martin
00:19:46Look at the way
00:19:47Kimi Räikkönen
00:19:48Only his 4th Grand Prix
00:19:4921 years old
00:19:50In the Sauber
00:19:51Is hanging on
00:19:52I talked to Willy Ramm
00:19:53The Sauber designer
00:19:54This morning
00:19:55And I said
00:19:56You've got to do it
00:19:57You've got to do it
00:19:58You've got to do it
00:19:59You've got to do it

00:20:25You've got to do it
00:20:26You've got to do it
00:20:27You've got to do it

00:21:08You've got to do it
00:21:09You've got to do it
00:21:10You've got to do it

00:21:12You've got to do it
00:21:13You've got to do it
00:21:14You've got to do it
00:21:15You've got to do it
00:21:16You've got to do it
00:21:17You've got to do it
00:21:18You've got to do it
00:21:19You've got to do it
00:21:20You've got to do it
00:21:21You've got to do it
00:21:22You've got to do it
00:21:23You've got to do it
00:21:24You've got to do it
00:21:25This lap of the race, 1 minute 27.554
00:21:29Compared with the lap record of 1.27.5
00:21:34So he's just two tenths of a second off
00:21:37Fredson's all-time lap record here on this circuit
00:21:411.25.5 in the Williams
00:21:44Yes, it's a 25.5 then is the outright lap record
00:21:47But Coulthard in second and Ralf Schumacher in first
00:21:50They are just leagues ahead of anybody else in lap time
00:21:54Just about two seconds a lap faster now than this man Trulli
00:21:58And Häkkinen then is getting held up at a similar pace
00:22:01So Schumacher, Ralf that is
00:22:03And David Coulthard waltzing away with a 12-second gap up front
00:22:07Jarno Trulli in fifth position
00:22:09That is an improvement of...
00:22:10There he is, an improvement of two places on his grid position
00:22:14For the start of the race
00:22:16Jordan's doing very, very much better this year
00:22:18In comparison with last year
00:22:20Because they are, after all, in fourth position
00:22:23In the Constructors' Championship
00:22:25Behind Sauber, notably, in third place
00:22:28Ferrari and McLaren, of course, first and second
00:22:31With 15 points behind them
00:22:33Schumacher, Ralf leads
00:22:34David Coulthard second
00:22:36A big gap between Coulthard and Trulli
00:22:38A big gap in Formula 1 terms
00:22:40A very big gap
00:22:4110.2 seconds
00:22:43And Ralf Schumacher
00:22:45A man who has 1414 years of karting experience behind him
00:22:50Where it's real cut and thrust, wheel to wheel
00:22:53Devil take the hindmost up
00:22:54He's reveling in it
00:22:56We're reveling in it
00:22:57You can join us soon
00:22:58We're going to a break
00:23:45We're going to a break
00:24:15We're going to a break
00:24:45It's hot up here, Mibeler
00:25:12Hot in terms of temperature
00:25:14It's starting to get that way
00:25:16And hot in the race
00:25:17Ralf Schumacher still leading David Coulthard
00:25:20And now the fastest man on the track
00:25:22Ralf Schumacher, that is
00:25:241.7 seconds
00:25:25Jarno Trulli in the Jordan is still third
00:25:28But Martin and I have just been talking
00:25:30And I think both of us believe that Montoya
00:25:33There he is in fifth place
00:25:35Followed by Barrichello Ferrari
00:25:37And Michael Schumacher Ferrari
00:25:39Could be on a one-stop strategy
00:25:41Whereas the men in front of them
00:25:43More likely to be on a two-stop
00:25:45In which case things are going to dramatically change
00:25:48In about 15 laps time
00:25:51We'll see
00:25:52Yes, but of course
00:25:53If you say it takes about 28 seconds to make a stop
00:25:56Already by lap 12
00:25:58They are some 20 seconds behind
00:26:01So it doesn't look like he's working out at the moment
00:26:03Hakkinen getting a bit ragged out of tows
00:26:05He's been in the dirty air of that Jordan
00:26:07Through all 12 of the laps
00:26:09And I think really struggling
00:26:10Hakkinen out of position I would say
00:26:12But it's a wonderful duel up at the front
00:26:14Ralf Schumacher and David Coulthard
00:26:16Absolutely slugging it out
00:26:18Lap time for lap time
00:26:19James, what can you tell us?
00:26:20Well, down at Ferrari here
00:26:21No drama whatsoever
00:26:22They don't seem particularly agitated
00:26:24Even when Michael Schumacher had that moment
00:26:26Coming out of the final corner
00:26:27It must have been some sort of glitch
00:26:28But they don't seem too concerned
00:26:30I think you're right
00:26:31It's a terrific duel at the front
00:26:32But I think what we're seeing today
00:26:33Is split strategies within the team
00:26:35I think they've sent one car out
00:26:36With a slightly lighter load than its teammate
00:26:38So you'll see the Ralf Schumacher-David Coulthard partnership
00:26:41Coming in a little bit earlier, I think
00:26:43Than Montoya and Hakkinen
00:26:45It looks to me also as though
00:26:46Michael has got a lot of fuel on board
00:26:48There's a long way for this thing to play out
00:26:50But the key thing is what you just said there, Martin
00:26:52Michael is 20 seconds
00:26:54Michael Schumacher 20 seconds
00:26:55Behind the leaders already after just 10 laps
00:26:57And he really has got his work cut out
00:26:59If he's going to make a one-stopper work for today
00:27:01Well, we're on lap 14
00:27:04And I'm going to give you the gaps now
00:27:06So that you can take that into account
00:27:08Schumacher-Ralf is 1.8 seconds ahead of Coulthard
00:27:1117.8 ahead of Trulli
00:27:14And you can see on the caption there
00:27:16What the others are
00:27:18So now let me take you back to the track
00:27:20As you look at Montoya
00:27:22Juan Pablo Montoya
00:27:24You saw him talking to Louise Goodman
00:27:26On that Amsterdam trip
00:27:28He really is an extremely nice
00:27:30Very balanced chap
00:27:32And he's getting a bit major grip on Formula 1
00:27:35Yes, they've dropped Kimi Raikkonen now
00:27:37Off the back of the two works Ferraris
00:27:39Because we saw Schumacher and Barrichello
00:27:42Make the move into Rivazza 1
00:27:44Raikkonen has not been able to pass Panis
00:27:46And he's tucked up behind him still
00:27:48They've fallen over 6 seconds behind
00:27:50Which is a great shame
00:27:51So it's giving the Ferraris a bit of breathing space
00:27:53In 6th and 7th place
00:27:55Lap 14
00:27:56Coulthard having another attacking mode
00:28:00He's quicker in that first sector
00:28:02Than anybody regularly
00:28:04He's got the car set up extremely well
00:28:06He's been working with his mechanics
00:28:08They had to rebuild the car
00:28:10After the first day's practice
00:28:12Because he had gone off and damaged it
00:28:14They were here until 4 o'clock in the morning
00:28:16The McLaren mechanics
00:28:18Back again just a few hours later
00:28:20To do the usual stuff that they have to do
00:28:22For the qualifying and other practice sessions
00:28:25And look at the way they are closing up on each other now
00:28:28As coming towards us
00:28:30Trolley, Hakkinen
00:28:32He's riding now with the race leader
00:28:34Ralf Schumacher
00:28:36As he laps Tarso Marquez
00:28:38In the Minardi
00:28:40The European Minardi
00:28:42On lap 15 out of 62
00:28:44Yes, and what's interesting is Ralf's quickest
00:28:46Through the longer, twistier middle section
00:28:48Which suggests his tyres
00:28:50Are very much in good shape
00:28:52And he's able to pull now about 3 tenths of a second
00:28:54Out of Coulthard through this part of the racetrack
00:28:56Aquaminerale
00:28:58And up through the top chicane
00:29:00That suggests that Schumacher's car
00:29:02Is in very, very good shape
00:29:04He said yesterday
00:29:06I just hope it's not wet during the race
00:29:08We're going to be in real trouble if it is
00:29:10Well, it's 26 degrees now
00:29:12It's getting hotter all the time
00:29:14And the Michelins love the heat
00:29:16Michelin is still feeling their way back
00:29:18Into Formula 1
00:29:20Feeling their way back very successfully I might say
00:29:22Because this is the fourth race of the year
00:29:24Out of 17
00:29:26And they are leading it at the present moment
00:29:28And Montoya in the other Michelin
00:29:30Shard at Williams
00:29:32Is in fifth position
00:29:34They are very much the stars of the French
00:29:36Manufacturer's teams
00:29:38Curiously though, look, Michael Schumacher
00:29:40Is only just hanging on to the back of this pack
00:29:42Isn't he Murray? He really is struggling
00:29:44To match the pace
00:29:46Only by a few fractions of a second per lap
00:29:48But he's just hanging on, he's not really
00:29:50Joining the party
00:29:52He did his usual trick just before the race
00:29:54Of sitting passively in the car
00:29:56On the back of it
00:29:58You have to get onto the grid 15 minutes before the race starts
00:30:00Or you have to start from the pit lane
00:30:02He left it until 16 minutes
00:30:04Before the race started
00:30:06Before he actually came out of the garage
00:30:08And then he calmly sat at the end of the pit lane
00:30:10For a while and did a practice start
00:30:12He's pretty experienced at this stuff
00:30:14He's getting towards
00:30:16150 Grand Prix
00:30:18Since the first one that he drove in
00:30:20In 1991
00:30:22And there is Jarno Trolli, Mikko Häkkinen, Montoya
00:30:24Barry Kello
00:30:26And Michael Schumacher
00:30:28The gap between them is about
00:30:30Two seconds
00:30:32And here is that Raikkonen-Panis
00:30:34Battle for what it would be
00:30:36Eighth position
00:30:38And Kimi just cannot find a way past
00:30:40Panis really, he has not got a good race set up
00:30:42At all, really fighting that car
00:30:44And Villeneuve a further second down the road
00:30:46Villeneuve baffles me this year
00:30:48Martin
00:30:50He had a terrible debut year
00:30:52With Villeneuve the year before last
00:30:54After he had left the Williams team
00:30:56He got better last year
00:30:58The car is much better this year
00:31:00But somehow Villeneuve
00:31:02Doesn't seem to be on it
00:31:04In comparison with the way Panis is going
00:31:06Could it have something to do with the after effects
00:31:08Of that colossal and terrible crash
00:31:10He had at Melbourne in Australia
00:31:12Don't think so, I think he's just struggling
00:31:14To really get the car hooked up
00:31:16Panis is doing a particularly good job
00:31:18He's not doing much for Jacques Stock
00:31:20This was one of Jacques' great drives last year
00:31:22This race, tremendous drive
00:31:24To finish fifth
00:31:26A charge all afternoon
00:31:28But he hasn't got the car to his liking so far
00:31:30Lap 17 now
00:31:32And the gap is extending
00:31:34Getting bigger
00:31:36Between Ralf Schumacher and David Coulthard
00:31:382.1 seconds
00:31:40As again, David Coulthard goes fastest
00:31:42In the first sector
00:31:44It's very much a battle
00:31:46Between the Williams BMW
00:31:48And the McLaren Mercedes
00:31:50Let us not forget that McLaren are powered
00:31:52By that mighty Mercedes-Benz engine
00:31:54Which is made by the
00:31:56Ilmore Concern at Bricksworth
00:31:58In England
00:32:00And a mighty fine engine it is
00:32:02It's a new one this year
00:32:04But it doesn't seem to be up to snuff
00:32:06As far as the BMW is concerned
00:32:08Honda are there as well, of course
00:32:10In terms of engine, we've got BMW leading
00:32:12We've got Mercedes-Benz second
00:32:14We've got Honda in third position
00:32:16In Jarno Trulli's Jordan
00:32:18And the Italian
00:32:20Jarno Trulli is now nearly
00:32:2221 seconds behind Ralf Schumacher
00:32:24Jordan lost a lot
00:32:26Of their key personnel over the winter
00:32:28They've got an enormous amount of strength
00:32:30And depth. Here is Ralf Schumacher
00:32:32Crossing the line. David Coulthard
00:32:34Holding that watching brief in second place
00:32:36They're now on lap 18
00:32:38Out of 62. Yes, and a new fastest lap
00:32:40As you can see for Ralf Schumacher
00:32:42That was four tenths faster than David on that last lap
00:32:44So the gap now up to 2.6 seconds
00:32:46And Ralf very much putting a spurt on
00:32:48In this sector of the race
00:32:50We're going to take a short break
00:33:14So
00:33:44So
00:34:14So
00:34:44So
00:35:06Impressed with Jarno Trulli
00:35:08I'm impressed with Jarno Trulli
00:35:10He's in third place at the moment
00:35:12Very strongly
00:35:14The highest that he's ever finished in a Grand Prix
00:35:16Is one second place in his career
00:35:18He's going well
00:35:20The Jordan is quick, the Jordan is reliable
00:35:22They're benefiting from their association with Honda
00:35:24You're looking now at Jarno Trulli
00:35:26There he is third
00:35:28Ahead of Mika Häkkinen who can't do anything about it
00:35:30Montoya can't do anything about Häkkinen
00:35:32In front of him
00:35:34And here is a replay
00:35:36Of a very bizarre accident that happened
00:35:38To Kimi Räikkönen who was sitting in ninth place
00:35:40I can only assume
00:35:42It's some kind of suspension failure
00:35:44He went off all by himself going up the hill
00:35:46A very, very strange accident
00:35:48Never seen a car in the wall there ever
00:35:50Not even in the rain
00:35:52It's an impossible place to go and crash
00:35:54Up front, Kulthar really had to step back on it
00:35:56Ralf Schumacher
00:35:58Put in some blistering low 1 minute 26s
00:36:00And Kulthar
00:36:02Appeared as if he couldn't respond initially
00:36:04Now he's also got down
00:36:06Into the mid 1 minute 26s
00:36:08The current lead, Ralf Schumacher
00:36:10Is 3.4 seconds over David Kulthar
00:36:12And it really is
00:36:14A slug at the front
00:36:16They're just going for each other
00:36:18They got some 25 seconds
00:36:20Over the third placed man Trulli
00:36:22And Jensen Button then in from
00:36:2417th place
00:36:26For what is a very early pit stop
00:36:28If that's a scheduled stop
00:36:30Yeah it is, it looks like a scheduled stop
00:36:32He's come on and taken on some new
00:36:34New Michelin tyres
00:36:36Lap 27 was when I was
00:36:38Expecting the first people to come in
00:36:40But since we're just about 1 third
00:36:42Through the race, lap 21
00:36:44Out of 62
00:36:46Here are the top 10 with gaps
00:36:48Ralf Schumacher leads Kulthar by 3.5 seconds
00:36:50And Trulli
00:36:52Who is 3rd by 25 seconds
00:36:54Häkkinen who is 4th by 27
00:36:56Montoya who is 5th by 28
00:36:58Barrichello who is 6th
00:37:00By 28.5
00:37:02Michael Schumacher who is 7th
00:37:04By just under 30
00:37:06Panis who is 8th by 40 seconds
00:37:08Jacques Villeneuve up into 9th place
00:37:1041 seconds behind Ralf Schumacher
00:37:12And in 10th place the 2nd Jordan of
00:37:14Heintz Harald Fritz
00:37:16And now I really am expecting things
00:37:18To change after the
00:37:20First round of fuel stops
00:37:22I'm expecting some of these people
00:37:24That we're looking at right now
00:37:26As they are strung out along the circuit
00:37:28With Michael Schumacher not making
00:37:30Any headway at all on Rubens
00:37:32Barrichello I'm expecting things
00:37:34To change because I'm
00:37:36Expecting some of them to go through
00:37:38When the others do their one stops
00:37:40We'll have to just wait and see what that is
00:37:42Rubens Barrichello incidentally
00:37:44Who has had a lot of criticism
00:37:46From other drivers
00:37:48Particularly Ralf Schumacher
00:37:50On account of the fact that there have been
00:37:52Cummings together with his Ferrari
00:37:54In every race this year
00:37:56Needs to finish well up in the top
00:37:58Six and at the present moment he's only
00:38:00In 6th position and James Allen
00:38:02Is in the pits. Yeah I've switched over
00:38:04Now to the McLaren garage where there's a bit
00:38:06Of gloom on the part of Mikko Häkkinen
00:38:08That he's being held up and all the cars
00:38:10Behind him as well. Montoya and the two
00:38:12Ferraris being held up by Jarno Trulli
00:38:14It's not something they expected for Trulli
00:38:16To be so far forward. Obviously it's
00:38:18Increasing the sort of disparity between
00:38:20The top two runners Ralf Schumacher and David Coulthard
00:38:22And everybody else. The picture is not quite
00:38:24As it seems at the moment
00:38:26Obviously Ralf and David are making
00:38:28Hay while the sun shines
00:38:30But the first round of pit stops for those two
00:38:32Is going to be around about lap 23 to 26
00:38:34There's a lot of subtle variations
00:38:36Going on in fuel load
00:38:38Different versions of two-stop strategies
00:38:40There's a long, long way to go in this race
00:38:42It's very, very finely poised
00:38:44Lap 22. Let's just consider
00:38:46One third of the way through the race
00:38:48The implications for the
00:38:50World Championship. David Coulthard is in
00:38:52A strong position because he's six points
00:38:54Behind Michael Schumacher at the present
00:38:56Moment. You're looking at Barrichello in sixth
00:38:58Position. And David Coulthard
00:39:00Is currently on six points
00:39:02For second place. Michael
00:39:04Schumacher is currently on no points
00:39:06For seventh place. So if things
00:39:08Stayed as they were, and they're not going to
00:39:10Believe me, David Coulthard
00:39:12Would be tying with Michael Schumacher at the
00:39:14End of the race. Well, Benetton, the third
00:39:16Benetton we've seen in the pits. You saw Jenson
00:39:18Button stop for a second time while James
00:39:20Was talking about some race strategy
00:39:22Clearly some kind of refuelling problem
00:39:24For Jenson Button's car, but this is very
00:39:26Very early in any compounds
00:39:28The misery, I'm afraid, of
00:39:30The Benetton team currently running down in
00:39:32Fourteenth and eighteenth. I'm not sure
00:39:34I completely subscribe to the idea
00:39:36That Trulli's holding everybody up
00:39:38So Hakkinen is one and a half seconds
00:39:40Behind him and lapping roughly
00:39:42The same pace. Clearly
00:39:44It would have damaged Hakkinen's tyres a bit earlier
00:39:46On in the race, but he's not. Look, there it is
00:39:48See for yourself. Not exactly climbing
00:39:50All over his gearbox, is he? No, there's
00:39:52Räikkönen being taken home on the back
00:39:54Of the motorbike. No, I'd
00:39:56Second that. I would say that Jarno
00:39:58Trulli is driving an absolute blinder
00:40:00Of a race to stay the way he is
00:40:02Ahead of Hakkinen, Montoya,
00:40:04Barrichello and Schumacher
00:40:06And down
00:40:08There is
00:40:10Ralph Schumacher leading the
00:40:12San Marino Grand Prix. It's nice to have a
00:40:14Look at him, because he's out on his
00:40:16Own. He's nearly four seconds now
00:40:18Ahead of David Coulthard, driving
00:40:20A calm, cool,
00:40:22Calculated, immaculate race
00:40:24Making the most use he can
00:40:26Of that BMW power and the tyres
00:40:28That he's got, and his own
00:40:30Experience, and he
00:40:32Is seemingly on his way
00:40:34To a debut
00:40:36Victory in Formula 1, but
00:40:38In order to do that, he's got to do another
00:40:4040 laps into the pit lane
00:40:42Comes Tarso Marquez
00:40:44He has not retired, as you can see
00:40:46In the European Minardi
00:40:48I think it's very significant what's going on in the front
00:40:50Of this race. Remember, had it stayed dry
00:40:52And with no problems in
00:40:54The previous Grand Prix in Brazil
00:40:56Either Ralph Schumacher or Montoya
00:40:58Either of them could have and would have
00:41:00Won the race, so
00:41:02I'm absolutely sure that
00:41:04You know, we're looking at
00:41:06Michael Schumacher, I believe
00:41:08He's got a front left puncture
00:41:10So a miserable afternoon continues
00:41:12For Ferrari, and luckily
00:41:14He knew there was a Benetton coming around the outside
00:41:16Michael's going to lose some
00:41:18Half a minute on this. Hopefully it won't delaminate
00:41:20Murray, and start ripping the
00:41:22Suspension, but there you can see
00:41:24A punctured left front
00:41:26And he's got to go carefully, such that
00:41:28Doesn't do further damage. Well spotted
00:41:30Was that instinct, or could you really see it?
00:41:32You could just see the car was hanging
00:41:34Low on the left front from the overhead shot
00:41:36Incidentally, we may have a look at the magic
00:41:38Front brakes on the Ferrari
00:41:40They've got some special combination
00:41:42Of circumstances as a result of which
00:41:44There is far less wind
00:41:46Resistance, but anyway, that's all
00:41:48Academic. It looks as though Michael Schumacher
00:41:50Is going to have to do another of his
00:41:52Classic recoveries if he's going to go anywhere
00:41:54In this race. And look, the people he
00:41:56Was running with are right down at Tosa, and he's
00:41:58Cruising around Rivazza at the far end
00:42:00Of the circuit. He's already half a lap
00:42:02Behind, and that's not going to help his
00:42:04Championship chances at home
00:42:06So, looking good for David Coulthard
00:42:08Even if he just finishes second
00:42:10In this race, he would be tying
00:42:12For the lead of the World Championship
00:42:14With Michael Schumacher, assuming Schumacher
00:42:16Does not finish in the points, but he's going to
00:42:18Struggle even Michael Schumacher to do that
00:42:20Now the Ferrari team already, they're going
00:42:22To attack the car, up goes the front
00:42:24Up goes the back, on goes the fuel filler
00:42:26Obviously they're pulling up and changing
00:42:28All the tyres and wheels at this point
00:42:30Force majeure, they've got to do it
00:42:32Long, he's a long fuel stop
00:42:3412 seconds
00:42:3613 seconds nearly
00:42:38And out he goes, and Michael
00:42:40Schumacher as
00:42:42He goes by, that's Tasso Marcus
00:42:44So now Michael Schumacher is
00:42:46Running last, 19th
00:42:48And last, retirements from
00:42:50Kimi Raikkonen, Jos
00:42:52Verstappen, and Fernando
00:42:54Alonso from the
00:42:56San Marino Grand Prix, 16
00:42:58Left over, 22 who started
00:43:00You've just seen, and are now
00:43:02Seeing, Ralf Schumacher
00:43:04Jordan is there, and James Allen
00:43:06More news. Yeah, disastrous as the Jordan
00:43:08Guys come out, they're obviously going to make a pit stop
00:43:10Probably for, who is it?
00:43:12Trulli's in the pits in fact, yeah, absolutely
00:43:14Just looking at that, Michael's been very
00:43:16Unlucky today, but he was slightly lucky also
00:43:18Because that puncture happened on lap
00:43:2025, which is just inside the
00:43:22Window where he could have fuelled it to go to the finish
00:43:24You saw that the fuel nozzle was on for a very
00:43:26Very long time, it's been a very
00:43:28Strange afternoon for Ferrari
00:43:30They made a mess of things in Brazil
00:43:32They got the setup of the car wrong, threw away the race
00:43:34They've had a terrible time so far
00:43:36Heaven knows where this will get Michael
00:43:38He's got a lot of ground to make up, but I do believe
00:43:40Guys, he's fuelled to the finish
00:43:42Repeat this after me, nothing
00:43:44Stays the same in Formula 1
00:43:46For very long, and you're getting a marvellous
00:43:48Demonstration of that now
00:43:50Ralf Schumacher leads, David
00:43:52Coulthard second, Jarno Trulli has
00:43:54Been into and out of the pits
00:43:56And you're looking at Rubens Barrichello
00:43:58Now, fighting in
00:44:00Sixth position, the points, he's on
00:44:02One world championship point at the
00:44:04Present moment. Yes, Coulthard just
00:44:06Taking a second out of
00:44:08Ralf Schumacher's lead last time around
00:44:10But I think it's because they're in traffic
00:44:12As you watch now
00:44:14Haken and Montoya and Barrichello
00:44:16Once again, much liner
00:44:18Stern, aren't they? So, Coulthard
00:44:20Then, he's now going through the traffic
00:44:22And that's Michael Schumacher out
00:44:24Touring in, all the body
00:44:26Language and everything, James, you're on top of it
00:44:28Absolutely extraordinary, the Ferrari guys
00:44:30Weren't ready for this at all, there was suddenly frantic
00:44:32Activity in the garage and Michael Schumacher
00:44:34Obviously has sustained some damage
00:44:36On that car and as a result of the
00:44:38Puncture and a catastrophic afternoon
00:44:40For Michael Schumacher comes to an end
00:44:42Well, it's his first retirement
00:44:44For about ten races
00:44:46And he's been right up at the top in all
00:44:48Of them. It has to happen sometime
00:44:50Even two, three times
00:44:52World champion Michael Schumacher
00:44:54Yeah, but that was curious, he came in and clearly
00:44:56Nobody was expecting him, he wasn't on the radio
00:44:58And he sort of swerved into the middle of the pit lane
00:45:00It feels like it was a free practice session
00:45:02Luckily somebody else wasn't making a pit stop
00:45:04At that time, which they could so easily have been doing
00:45:06And you're not allowed to reverse
00:45:08In the pit lane, that is a big fine
00:45:10And immediate exclusion, but it looks like
00:45:12He's out of the race anyway. So, now
00:45:14Lap 26, out of 62
00:45:16All eyes on Ralf Schumacher
00:45:18Leading and David Coulthard second
00:45:20Because the gap between them and Mika Häkkinen
00:45:22Who is now in third position
00:45:24Is some 33
00:45:26Seconds between Ralf Schumacher
00:45:28Leading and Häkkinen who is third
00:45:30Are they on a one-stopper?
00:45:32Are they on a two-stopper?
00:45:34And when I say who, they, who do I mean?
00:45:36Well, I don't know, it could be any way
00:45:38But into the pit lane
00:45:40Now comes the Prost
00:45:42Just checking to see whether it
00:45:44It is Matsukane
00:45:46The Argentine driver
00:45:48Who is in 14th
00:45:50Position, not bad for him
00:45:52Because Matsukane, the highest
00:45:54He's had this year, is 12th
00:45:56Place in Malaysia
00:45:58Now, look at him surging through the field
00:46:00As he exits the pit lane
00:46:02The third, fourth
00:46:04The fourth, third, fourth, fifth, sixth men
00:46:06Go bursting past him
00:46:08Led by Mika Häkkinen third
00:46:10Now Montoya is up into fourth place
00:46:12As a result of Schumacher
00:46:14Michaels' retirement
00:46:16Into the pit lane comes Heinz Harald Frentzen
00:46:18From second position
00:46:20One point, one place off the points
00:46:22Yes, so
00:46:24Frentzen then was running
00:46:26Ahead of Trulli, who'd already made his stop
00:46:28Remember, Trulli in the sister Jordan
00:46:30Running third right from the beginning
00:46:32Of this Grand Prix
00:46:34And Frentzen rejoined, we didn't see where
00:46:36He fed back into the pack
00:46:38But we're absolutely sure now
00:46:40That the Ferraris were one-stopping
00:46:42I think Montoya too
00:46:44If Ralf was one-stopping at the front
00:46:46He's just done it, 125.5
00:46:48Has Ralf Schumacher
00:46:50That is an amazingly fast time
00:46:52The lap record, that 5.13, 5.24
00:46:54Hang on, I can tell you
00:46:56The lap record is 25.53
00:47:00He's beaten him by one hundredth of a second
00:47:02New lap record for Ralfi
00:47:06And he added 1.3 seconds to his lead
00:47:08Coulthard cannot respond to that
00:47:10If Ralf Schumacher stays out
00:47:12To some lap 35 or 38
00:47:14Or something, and who was that
00:47:16Coming in the pit, the Montoya
00:47:18It was Montoya coming in from fourth position
00:47:20The first of the two Williams BMWs
00:47:22To stop
00:47:24Undergo the jacks
00:47:26Up go the cars
00:47:28On go the tyres
00:47:30In goes the fuel hose, down it comes the fuel
00:47:32You see the mechanics
00:47:34They lift their hands and out he goes
00:47:369.5 seconds
00:47:38From Montoya
00:47:40On lap 27
00:47:42James pointing out down in the pit lane
00:47:44That is Montoya's first ever Grand Prix pit stop
00:47:46First time he's made it to a pit stop
00:47:48He's rejoined
00:47:50In good shape
00:47:52And it's Ralf Schumacher now
00:47:54Continuing to put down the pedal
00:47:56He's on another very quick lap
00:47:58On lap 28 out of 62
00:48:00Second place man Coulthard
00:48:02In this lap we believe
00:48:04The McLaren mechanics out in the pit lane
00:48:06We can see, so traditionally
00:48:08The higher of the qualifying McLarens
00:48:10Come in first
00:48:12Or have first shoulder when they want to come in
00:48:14In pit, he's in
00:48:16And we're looking at the wrong guy
00:48:18We're looking at the wrong guy
00:48:20But now here is Häkkinen and Häkkinen has got Rubens Barrichello
00:48:22Right behind him
00:48:24Remember, Montoya who was between them
00:48:26And there is David Coulthard
00:48:28Who was in second place, James, sorry
00:48:30Tyre wear pretty significant
00:48:32I have to say, remember
00:48:34The McLaren are running the softer the Bridgestone tyres
00:48:36And the mechanics are walking past me now
00:48:38Carrying what amount to slicks really
00:48:40But Coulthard driving very nicely today
00:48:42Great fight between him and Ralf Schumacher
00:48:44And I heard what you were saying before guys
00:48:46About how well Trulli was driving
00:48:48And it was no slur on him at all
00:48:50But because it's so difficult to pass here
00:48:52I think the guys behind him were just stacked up
00:48:54Biding their time
00:48:56For sure McLaren felt that Häkkinen has lost ground
00:48:58But we'll see now whether they can make it up
00:49:00And look, this is Montoya
00:49:02Chasing Trulli
00:49:04So the computer hasn't shaken it all out yet
00:49:06After those stops
00:49:08Is that Frentzen or Trulli?
00:49:10We think it's Trulli
00:49:12They've got great straight line speed
00:49:14Will he be able to have a nibble at the inside?
00:49:16And Trulli covering his line very, very well
00:49:18I'll take the inside
00:49:20Look at that!
00:49:22Montoya says I'll have the inside on the next corner
00:49:24And I'll have the place, thank you very much
00:49:26Good afternoon, off I go
00:49:28And Montoya moves back
00:49:30Into the point six position
00:49:32Well that was candy for my baby, wasn't it?
00:49:34I mean, Trulli put his car in the right place
00:49:36And then didn't commit, didn't go for it
00:49:38Schumacher in, Ralf Schumacher in
00:49:40Sorry Martin, Ralf Schumacher in
00:49:42Race leader, seven seconds lead
00:49:44Over David Coulthard
00:49:46In the McLaren Mercedes
00:49:48Nice clean stop
00:49:50Eight seconds, out he goes
00:49:52Ralf Schumacher now
00:49:54I was busy talking about him
00:49:56I haven't seen David Coulthard go through
00:49:58But I guess he must have done
00:50:00Looking
00:50:02Ralf had a seven second lead, Murray
00:50:04He put those fast laps in
00:50:06So there Coulthard, I just heard the McLaren go fast now
00:50:08So Coulthard very much now
00:50:10In second place, Hakanen in, Hakanen in
00:50:12Yes, and Barrichello then
00:50:14Is going to move up to a temporary third place
00:50:16So, watch this one
00:50:18Carefully, Micah Hakanen
00:50:20Double world champion
00:50:22Yet to do well this year
00:50:24He's only got one world championship point
00:50:26Has Micah Hakanen
00:50:28He's had a very bad start to the 2001 season
00:50:30And virtually a slip
00:50:32Right front again on that
00:50:34So it does appear then that both
00:50:36Ferraris were one stopping
00:50:38As we said, we thought that Montoya
00:50:40Was one stopping and the other Williams
00:50:42And clearly he wasn't
00:50:44So really, McLaren the first to blink
00:50:46On the pit stops up at the front
00:50:48But only by one lap
00:50:50Ralf Schumacher then maintaining his lead
00:50:52And Villeneuve who had been in fifth position
00:50:54Exits the pit lane in the B.A.R
00:50:56Incidentally
00:50:58The Bridgestone right front of Micah Hakanen
00:51:00In the warm up this morning
00:51:02Lasted five laps
00:51:04Five laps
00:51:06And it was virtually a slip
00:51:08There have been confident predictions
00:51:10That if a team does well
00:51:12And finishes on what are in effect
00:51:14Slick tyres as opposed to four groove tyres
00:51:16There'll be a protest from somebody
00:51:18Because they might be judged
00:51:20To have an advantage by having more grip
00:51:22But anyway
00:51:24We're on lap 31 now
00:51:26We're riding with Ralf Schumacher
00:51:28In the Williams BMW
00:51:30Up to the Tamburello
00:51:32Left, right
00:51:34Now he accelerates away
00:51:36He's doing 185 miles an hour
00:51:38And with flames coming out of the back
00:51:40Of the Prost
00:51:42That is, I'm just checking whether it's
00:51:44Mazzacani or Alessi
00:51:46It is
00:51:48It's Mazzacani
00:51:50Yeah, it's Mazzacani retiring
00:51:52In the Prost with its Ferrari engine
00:51:54Last year's Ferrari engine
00:51:56A blaze at the back
00:51:58It's probably an oil line that's broken
00:52:00A bit of oil break
00:52:02Catching fire
00:52:04Hopefully the marshals will be on it
00:52:06Yes, there they are, they're very, very good
00:52:08I remember when Gerhard Berger had his terrible crash
00:52:10At the Tamburello in the Ferrari
00:52:12And it caught fire with him inside it
00:52:14The Italian marshals were on it
00:52:16Incredibly quickly
00:52:18And very, very efficiently
00:52:20As Mika Häkkinen dives out of the slipstream
00:52:22Of Mazzacani's Minardi
00:52:24I'm sorry, of Marche's Minardi
00:52:26In 18th place to Lapid
00:52:28I don't really know what happened to Jarno Trulli
00:52:30Whether he's had a problem or a very slow pit stop
00:52:32But Trulli then
00:52:34Has ended up behind Häkkinen
00:52:36Remember Häkkinen tucked up
00:52:38For the first 27 laps
00:52:40Of this race, behind Jarno Trulli
00:52:42And Trulli has not worked out
00:52:44For him at all, Villeneuve
00:52:46Villeneuve, and he smites
00:52:48The steering wheel in frustration
00:52:50First with one hand, then with both of them
00:52:52It is not his day
00:52:54It is not his year so far
00:52:56Jack Villeneuve, the Honda engine
00:52:58Erupts and pushes out
00:53:00A great burst of smoke behind him
00:53:02And he pulls off the course
00:53:04Very smartly indeed, now
00:53:06We are rather more than halfway through the race
00:53:08We're on lap 32 out of 62
00:53:10As Jack stumps off
00:53:12I am not at all
00:53:14Happy about this
00:53:16And Ralf Schumacher is leading
00:53:18David Coulthard by
00:53:209.3 seconds
00:53:22Barry Kello
00:53:24Barry Kello is in third place
00:53:26And has yet to stop
00:53:28Mika Häkkinen is in fourth place
00:53:3020 seconds behind him, it's going to be nip and tuck
00:53:32There is Barry Kello, incidentally
00:53:34Montoya is in fifth place
00:53:36And he has stopped, and Jarno Trulli
00:53:38Is sixth and has stopped
00:53:40So we've just got the Ferrari that you were looking at
00:53:42A moment ago, as Eddie Irvine comes in
00:53:44From second place in the Jaguar, to stop
00:53:46Yes, and quite clearly then
00:53:48The risk that Ferrari took
00:53:50With the harder tyre and the one-stop
00:53:52It is not working, it is not working
00:53:54Barry Kello is 20.2 seconds
00:53:56Behind the leader, Ralf Schumacher
00:53:58And they've all got to stop one more time
00:54:00You know, I'm always
00:54:02Worried about saying
00:54:04Something is going to happen, because so often
00:54:06It doesn't, but I will ask a question
00:54:08Are we about to see
00:54:10An historic race
00:54:12The return of Williams
00:54:14To victory, accompanied by
00:54:16BMW and Michelin
00:54:18Because Ralf Schumacher
00:54:20Certainly got a major grasp
00:54:22On this race
00:54:24The last race that Williams won
00:54:26And it was not with a BMW engine then
00:54:28It was with a Renault engine
00:54:30Was the European Grand Prix
00:54:32At Horef in 1997, when he won the world championship
00:54:34Barry Kello in then
00:54:36So third place man, Barry Kello in
00:54:38On the ideal stop point
00:54:40At the end of lap
00:54:4233, so Barry Kello
00:54:44In for what will be his one and only
00:54:46Stop of the afternoon
00:54:48No, and I'll tell you why
00:54:50Because Mika Hakkinen is bearing down
00:54:52I haven't seen him go past yet
00:54:54And it looks to me as though Rubens Barry Kello
00:54:56Has retained his third position
00:54:58In the Ferrari, yes he has
00:55:00Rubens Barry Kello is still third
00:55:02After his pit stop, there is Mika Hakkinen
00:55:04In the background
00:55:06Yes, they've changed the strategy then
00:55:08They've elected to short fill it
00:55:10And keep track position over Hakkinen
00:55:12And now they know that
00:55:14With their fresh tyres and not too much fuel on board
00:55:16Barry Kello should be able to pull out
00:55:18An advantage, but they're racing for the final place
00:55:20On the podium, subject to reliability
00:55:22Ralph Schumacher, David Coulthard
00:55:24Way out front
00:55:26Right, let's quickly establish what is happening
00:55:28Michael Schumacher is out of the race
00:55:30No points for the first time for about 10 races
00:55:32His brother Ralph leads on lap 33
00:55:34Out of 62
00:55:36David Coulthard is second
00:55:38Barry Kello is third in the Ferrari
00:55:40Both McLarens are in the top six
00:55:42Because Hakkinen is fourth
00:55:44We are leaving here
00:55:46And as usual, we will be back
00:55:48Join us then
00:56:44And we are leaving
00:56:46And we are leaving

01:45:46And it is the British national anthem for winners
01:46:16And stay tuned for a great competition that we've got coming up after the break, but meantime
01:46:43Ralf Schumacher, get used to the fizz and the bubble of champagne as it goes down your
01:46:50back into your face to signify that you have won, won, won.
01:46:55He's got a great feeling and he's going to feel it again.
01:46:58Ralf Schumacher wins his 70th Grand Prix then of his career, the 104th career win for the
01:47:04Williams team.
01:47:05David Coulthard gets his victory, Dickie Stamford's already got his, Rubens Barrichello for third
01:47:15position from Germano Bellini who is the president of the FAMS, that will be happening any second
01:47:22now.
01:47:23What a great experience, you only get it once in your life, the first time that you have
01:47:27won a Formula One World Championship Grand Prix, and that is Ralf Schumacher's pleasure,
01:47:36victory, honour here in Italy.
01:47:39Yes, and Bernie Efteling does a very nice little touch when you win your first Grand
01:47:43Prix, not that I have, but no, Coulthard has, and he sends a very nice linen metal plaque
01:47:50that's nicely inscribed.
01:47:51And here it is, Ralf, feel it, enjoy it, well, well done.
01:47:57Well done.
01:48:27Well done.
01:48:57Well done.
01:49:27Well done.
01:49:57Well done.
01:50:27Bernie Efteling, Rubens Barrichello, third for Ferrari, Ralf, you spent a lot of years
01:50:30watching Michael Schupp, your brother, clock up over 40 Grand Prix wins, and now you've
01:50:35done it yourself.
01:50:36Talk us through the start, last year you got on the grass at the start, this year, the
01:50:39same again.
01:50:40Yes, it was the same situation, but this year I was a bit further, and luckily David gave
01:50:45me the space, and yes, I think it was a clean start, besides that, from there on I was in
01:50:50front and I couldn't even believe it, to be honest, and then pulled the gap out, and after
01:50:55a few laps I thought he was going to go a bit quicker, so I had to push again, because
01:50:58I had to watch after my brakes a bit, and from there on it was a pretty long race, I
01:51:03must say, I mean, it took ages, to be honest.
01:51:07But notably you led every single lap of the race, David was about three seconds behind
01:51:11when you came in for your first pit stop, but I noticed after that pit stop, and after
01:51:15your second, you were very quick, straight out of the pits.
01:51:18Did your tyres heat up super fast, you were very competitive?
01:51:21Yes, I mean, as we saw in previous races, we just were caught out by a bit of bad luck,
01:51:26really, I mean, the Michelin is a great tyre, especially in race conditions, it's doing
01:51:31a great job, and we saw that today, I mean, everything went perfect, the car setting was
01:51:35great, and the engine, obviously, so, you know, that's why we have the result.
01:51:40Thank you very much, Ralph.
01:51:41David, could I have your version of the start, because you were on pole position, but Ralph
01:51:45came through from third place, and then he seemed to open out a little bit of a gap on
01:51:49you before you started stabilising it.
01:51:51Yeah, no, I moved a little bit just before the start, I had to stop the car, and then
01:51:57that's when the lights changed, so I then got too much wheelspin, and to be honest,
01:52:00I thought that I was going to be swamped at the start, but I presume Mika must have made
01:52:03a bad start as well, and then I sort of sensed Ralph was on the inside, and I was getting
01:52:08ready to move that way, and then obviously I had to move to make sure that there was
01:52:12enough space for us all, and then I was interested to know just how quick he would be in the
01:52:17race, and obviously, to my great disappointment, I found out he was quicker than I was, so,
01:52:22you know, congratulations to Ralph on his first victory, and to William's BMW.
01:52:27We mentioned how Ralph seemed very quick after his pit stops, but your second set of tyres,
01:52:31they didn't seem to be, from the outside, as competitive as your first and third sets
01:52:35of tyres, is that correct?
01:52:37I had a little bit of inconsistency, set to set, which made it difficult for me to be
01:52:42really pushing the whole race, so I'd say that, in actual fact, this is probably the
01:52:45most difficult Grand Prix I've had this season, in terms of balance, but if you can still
01:52:50pick up six points in those situations, then, you know, it all helps with the championship.
01:52:54Absolutely, thank you very much, David.
01:52:56Rubens, Mik starts from Ralph and David, but yours seemed to be very slow away.
01:53:02Were you carrying a lot of fuel, because you then ran on for 30 laps, fully half of the race?
01:53:07Well, I think we had a great strategy, to be honest with you.
01:53:12I had a slow start, I had too much wheelspin, you know, I could follow everyone, I didn't
01:53:18know how many times they would stop, and I was just trying to...
01:53:25I mean, Émile, it's very, very difficult to do that, I was losing time behind Mik,
01:53:31and luckily I had three more laps when he came into the pits, so I could go fast, and
01:53:38then my race was decided there.
01:53:40It was a great race for me, because I started from so far back.
01:53:44It was good to come up, do some quick laps, and finish on the podium.
01:53:49Now, in the very early laps, Mikael appeared to make a mistake, and you moved past him.
01:53:53I don't know if he had a problem, but then later in the race, obviously, Mikael came in.
01:53:58Was it relayed to you what the problem was with his car, and did you start thinking it
01:54:01could happen to yours as well?
01:54:04I didn't know what was going on with Mikael.
01:54:07I saw that he had a problem with the balance, and probably he wasn't very good on braking,
01:54:13so when I saw him going wide, I took my chance, and I saw that I was quite fast.
01:54:19I was quite happy with the balance of the car throughout the weekend.
01:54:24I think it got us, by surprise, the traffic in Qualify, and the start, you know, falling
01:54:30back to eighth place.
01:54:32Otherwise, I think we could have fought with the big guys.
01:54:39Thanks very much, Rubens.
01:54:40Back to you, Ralf.
01:54:41Is this the start of something big for Williams, BMW, and Michelin, three marked companies
01:54:46that are getting back onto the big stage?
01:54:48Well, I mean, it might be a bit early, but we have been pretty strong the whole season.
01:54:53Obviously, have been caught up by some bad luck still now, but I think we have to keep
01:54:58on working.
01:54:59We have a great package together.
01:55:00We just need to improve it, bit by bit, and it might be possible.
01:55:03We'll see.
01:55:04We try our best.
01:55:05Thank you very much, Ralf.
01:55:07Now, Rubens and first, Ralf, in your own languages, please.
01:55:10Yes, perhaps the start of something great for Williams, Michelin, and for BMW.
01:55:16A great trio, with a good driver, Ralf Schumacher, who won his first Grand Prix here today.
01:55:22And that was thanks to a good start.
01:55:23He was lucky that David Coulthard wasn't completely gone, and let a small gap pass him.
01:55:29And so Ralf Schumacher could take the lead, and not be behind him anymore.
01:55:33David Coulthard left pole position, the car moved a bit before the start, and had to
01:55:37stop it again.
01:55:38And then it was gone.
01:55:39Bad start.
01:55:40Yes, then he had to let Ralf Schumacher pass, and he thought to himself, well, I just have
01:55:45to see how fast Ralf Schumacher is in the race.
01:55:48Yes, he couldn't have thought of that, because he never saw Ralf Schumacher again.
01:55:51Coulthard, happy with his six World Cup points, important for the fight for the world title.
01:55:56Rubens Barrichello thought he had a good race, and fell back to 8th place.
01:56:01He had a bad start, and ended up 3rd, because he was able to drive three more laps to the
01:56:06pitstop of Mika Hakkinen, and make the difference there.
01:56:08But all in all, he was satisfied with Rubens Barrichello.
01:56:11Well, Tommy, the first victory for the man you raced against, Ralf Schumacher.
01:56:16So it was a great day for you.
01:56:17Yes, absolutely.
01:56:18He was my own teammate, and I traveled with him for a year, from hotel to hotel, and from
01:56:23circuit to circuit.
01:56:24And further?
01:56:25Yes, and yes, we also did a lot of crazy things, of course, but those are things we
01:56:28keep to ourselves.
01:56:29Okay.
01:56:30No, I think it's great.
01:56:31I congratulate him on this, and I will definitely call him again.
01:56:36Fine.
01:56:37And then we go to Spain in two weeks, to Barcelona.
01:56:42That is the fifth race in the world championship.
01:56:45Here is the result of the fourth.
01:56:47And what does it say on top?
01:56:49For the first time in the history of Formula 1, Ralf Schumacher.
01:56:53Not Michael Schumacher, no.
01:56:55The other one.
01:56:56I think it has never happened before that two brothers in Formula 1 have won a Grand Prix.
01:57:03Kulthard is in second place.
01:57:05Barrichello is third.
01:57:07Hakkinen still has three World Championship points ahead of him.
01:57:10But he is clearly now in the shadow of David Kulthard.
01:57:14He has to play the role of second driver for the rest of the season.
01:57:18And then the two Jordans in fifth and sixth place.
01:57:22Bernol, who had to move out with Eros at the finish line, is crying.
01:57:27Yes, unfortunately.
01:57:28Too bad, too bad.
01:57:29I hope it will be a lot better in Barcelona.
01:57:32Eros showed quite a bit last year that they were able to drive very fast lap times.
01:57:37I am curious how they have the traction control for each other.
01:57:41I would very much like to see our Dutchman drive ahead again.
01:57:44It's good for the enthusiasm.
