00:10:24The next station is St. Mary's–St. Pauli.
00:10:30An explosive start then, once again, to the second Grand Prix of the 2002 season.
00:10:35There goes Michael Schumacher, now down in 21st place.
00:10:39That was Heinz-Harald Frentzen's arrows you could see in the pit lane.
00:10:42Whatever the problem is, he's not been able to get to his own garage as Schumacher resumes in 21st place.
00:10:48What's your betting he can still win the race?
00:10:50I don't think so. No, I think this–Rubens, Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher up to 2nd place now,
00:10:55Räikkönen 3rd and Coulthard 4th, and you can't bet against Montoya as well,
00:10:58but this is going to be a terrific scrap.
00:11:00We often talk, Martin, about what the World Championship would look like if Michael Schumacher retired today.
00:11:05Well, we might find out who would be supreme on a day like today.
00:11:08Well, I don't count him out yet. I mean, he's not a full lap behind,
00:11:12and we know he is supreme around this racetrack.
00:11:15He's been on pole four consecutive times, he's won the race three times,
00:11:21and, of course, he had to give one away to Eddie Irvine.
00:11:24And don't write Michael Schumacher, it's going to be thrilling to see him coming back through the field.
00:11:29Barrichello over the line then, and he leads by 2.3 seconds now,
00:11:35and the two McLarens a further couple of seconds behind Ralf Schumacher.
00:11:40They're 4th and 5th, Heidfeld in very close company with Coulthard.
00:11:44Remember I said at the beginning, the midfielders who are too stopping,
00:11:47I think, could put the McLarens under a lot of pressure in the early stages of these races.
00:11:52And Jenson Button is sick, also in close company with Coulthard in the McLaren.
00:11:57Bad news from the pits, that Takuma Sato in the second, Jordan, has also had to come in for a nose cone.
00:12:02So that Jordan obviously involved in some kind of close contact in the early stages.
00:12:07We're waiting for the computer to work itself through,
00:12:09so we can see exactly what the margin is between the race leader.
00:12:13Both Jordans in the pits, there's Fisichella, big problem.
00:12:15And he's shot past his pit, and they'll have to pull him back, I wonder.
00:12:20And it looks like they came together.
00:12:22And look, one's lost its front wing, one's lost its rear wing.
00:12:25They obviously had a squabble into the pits.
00:12:27And Fisichella pushed straight through the garage zone.
00:12:31And not a good St. Patrick's Day for the Jordan team, no doubt about that.
00:12:35But putting a front wing on is a whole bunch easier than putting a rear wing on.
00:12:39Rear wing connected to the gearbox and strongly connected.
00:12:43Front wing just with 4 clips.
00:12:45There aren't too many rules that exist between teammates in a Formula 1 team.
00:12:48But there is just one, and that is don't take each other off in the race.
00:12:51Unfortunately, the two Jordan boys have done just that.
00:12:54Now the computer has righted itself.
00:12:55Michael Schumacher is setting fastest sector times left, right and centre.
00:12:59But he's going to have to, because he's 45.3 seconds behind this man,
00:13:03his own teammate, Rubens Barrichello, in an identical Ferrari,
00:13:07with presumably the same tyres.
00:13:09Well, definitely the same tyres, and presumably a similar strategy.
00:13:12So now we're going to see what Michael can do.
00:13:14He's got traffic between them as well to make up
00:13:16if he's going to try and win this motor race ahead of Rubens Barrichello.
00:13:19And I suppose the question then would be,
00:13:21would Barrichello be asked to move over? Surely not.
00:13:23But that's a long, long way in the future.
00:13:25That's your race order at the moment, though.
00:13:27If I was right that they were fueling Michael Light to get him down to the first corner.
00:13:31Once again, Michael poorly away, as he was in Melbourne.
00:13:34Did not leave the line nicely.
00:13:36But he could well now be on the wrong strategy, considering his track position.
00:13:40They expected him to be out front and comfortably leading.
00:13:44He's right out back and plumb last.
00:13:46Which is great news for us watching it.
00:13:4921st place at the moment.
00:13:51Michael Schumacher, 19th, he's made himself up to now.
00:13:54He's just putting himself right on that and carving his way.
00:13:57The next car he's going to have to pass is Mark Webber in the Minardi.
00:13:59Then it's Alex Young, Eddie Irvine, rather,
00:14:02sluggish in 16th place in the Jaguar,
00:14:04with his teammate Pedro de la Rosa just in front of him in 15th.
00:14:07It's been a tough, tough weekend for the Jaguar team,
00:14:09as it has for the BAR team as well.
00:14:12And they're just in front in 13th and 14th as well.
00:14:15Here's your race leader.
00:14:17It'll be really interesting now to find out when Barrichello has to pit.
00:14:21I'm pretty sure it will be before the Williams.
00:14:25I assume they don't have as big a fuel tank,
00:14:27and I would be surprised if they're as heavy as the Williams.
00:14:30I think that's why you're seeing this lead build at the moment to 2.7 seconds.
00:14:35The winner on the start line was Jarno Trulli.
00:14:38He made up five places, currently running eighth.
00:14:41Renault's sixth and eighth.
00:14:43Montoya, then, up to seventh place, James.
00:14:45I haven't seen any of it, unfortunately, on the screen,
00:14:48but Montoya screaming his way back through the pack.
00:14:52And Michael Schumacher is now up to 19th.
00:14:55He took 1.1 seconds out of Ruben's Barrichello lead on the last lap alone.
00:15:00Yes, the other big winners from the start were Ralf Schumacher,
00:15:02who was fourth, now second.
00:15:04David Coulthard, who was sixth, now fourth.
00:15:07Mikasalo went up from 10th to ninth.
00:15:09Heidfeld went up from seventh to sixth.
00:15:11And Kimi Räikkönen as well, a terrific start for him.
00:15:14He was fifth on the grid, and he's now third.
00:15:19So it'd be really interesting to pick up Montoya, I think.
00:15:22There's where the next action's going to be.
00:15:24He's 1.4 behind Jenson Button in sixth.
00:15:26He's another 1.4 behind Heidfeld in fifth.
00:15:30And here, then, is a replay of the start.
00:15:32Hopefully, we'll get it in the corner of our screen.
00:15:34The Ferrari slowly away.
00:15:35Michael recognized it instantly and went to cover his grand.
00:15:39A very abrupt move.
00:15:40You're allowed to move once, and Michael takes that to the extreme,
00:15:44as in anything he does behind the wheel of a racing car.
00:15:47Here's an overhead view, and you can see...
00:15:50Oh, the car on the back of the grid didn't get away at all.
00:15:53There are three abreast, then, heading into Turn 1,
00:15:56and it's quite clear that Montoya thinks he's going to go around the outside,
00:16:00and Michael says, I mean, none of that.
00:16:02I'm assuming Michael...
00:16:03They cut away just at the juicy bit there.
00:16:05I'm assuming Michael would have then understeered a little bit wide,
00:16:09having come at such an acute angle into Turn 1 there,
00:16:12and just brushed with Montoya.
00:16:14I think the point was, though, that Montoya kept his foot in, didn't he?
00:16:16It's quite a wide first corner there,
00:16:18and he decided he's going to go right around the outside.
00:16:20We've seen David Caulfield do that in the previous years,
00:16:23go around the outside of Michael Schumacher,
00:16:24and Montoya obviously learned from that experience.
00:16:26A fantastic move, and look what it's done for him.
00:16:29Not a lot. He's in seventh.
00:16:30But it's done even less for Michael Schumacher.
00:16:32Now down in 19th place.
00:16:34As we look at Ralf Schumacher, currently second.
00:16:36What's the margin?
00:16:373.3 seconds.
00:16:38So keeping Barrichello relatively honest,
00:16:40Barrichello only dropping in by about, well, a tenth on that lap.
00:16:44I don't think Williams would be too unhappy about that,
00:16:46but luckily it seems as if Montoya did not pick up a puncture.
00:16:50So often the side wing end fencers,
00:16:52although they're now radiused more nicely,
00:16:54can just cut a tyre if, in fact, that wing did make contact with a tyre,
00:16:59which is what most often happens.
00:17:01But Montoya appearing to be okay.
00:17:03He's narrowed the gap to Jenson Button in sixth place,
00:17:06down to just half a second.
00:17:08So hopefully we can pick that strap up at some point,
00:17:11because that's where all the action is at the moment.
00:17:13Michael Schumacher remains 19th,
00:17:16and ironically lost a couple of tenths last time around to Rubens Barrichello.
00:17:22He's now 43, and look.
00:17:24So he's carrying, look, he's carrying Michael's wing with him.
00:17:29That eventually then gets spat out back into the racetrack,
00:17:33and Michael with a car that just would not want to turn.
00:17:36All the rear, normally it's something around 40% aero split on the front,
00:17:4160% on the rear, and Michael would have 100% on the rear,
00:17:44but just about, and zero on the front,
00:17:46and your car feels like a speedboat.
00:17:48It'll be interesting to see also whether Montoya's car sustained any other damage.
00:17:51If you look carefully on these cars, just behind the front wings,
00:17:54you can see aerodynamic devices,
00:17:55and in fact it looks as though Ralf Schumacher's missing one there,
00:17:58but just behind the front wheels there is an aerodynamic device,
00:18:00which also helps to create the downforce,
00:18:02which presses these cars down onto the track,
00:18:05and Montoya may well be missing parts of that,
00:18:07but he's the kind of racer who'll just keep his foot hard to the floor,
00:18:10keep on pressing until the chequered flag.
00:18:12He's currently 13 and a half seconds behind Rubens Barrichello, the race leader,
00:18:17and just in front of him is Jenson Button on the racetrack with Nick Heidfeld as well.
00:18:21Those three circulating very much together
00:18:23looks like a pretty good scrap.
00:18:25You can just see at the top of your screens there
00:18:27as the two McLarens came through.
00:18:28Räikkönen, as he has been all weekend, ahead of Coulthard,
00:18:31and there's that scrap I'm talking about right at the top of the screen.
00:18:33Looks like Montoya's ready to make a move on Button.
00:18:35Will he follow that?
00:18:36And he's made it, hasn't he?
00:18:37There he is.
00:18:38Made it stick.
00:18:39That Williams has had 3 or 4k advantage on everybody else,
00:18:423 or 4km per hour advantage down the straight,
00:18:45and he made it pay off there, didn't he,
00:18:47and pulled out of the slipstream right at the inside of Jenson Button,
00:18:51taking over 6th position.
00:18:53So Barrichello leads by 3.5 seconds now.
00:18:56Räikkönen from Ralf Schumacher, Räikkönen third,
00:18:5910 seconds behind Barrichello, Coulthard a further 1.1 behind that.
00:19:03I mentioned a second ago, Martin,
00:19:04that Räikkönen has really been in front of Coulthard all weekend, hasn't he?
00:19:08Seems to have just come here straight away and just got on the track.
00:19:11Coulthard's had all manner of problems throughout the weekend.
00:19:13It does seem that Kimi's been better hooked up for whatever reason,
00:19:16no doubt about it,
00:19:17but strangely off the pace, really, the McLarens 3 qualifying,
00:19:22although I don't think they'll be too unhappy at the moment.
00:19:24They're lapping, they're about a second a lap slower than Barrichello.
00:19:28Remember, that's about 25 kilos of fuel,
00:19:31so if they are heavily gassed up, then they may be OK at this stage.
00:19:35You know, this is a race that's going to come to us towards the end,
00:19:38and certainly watching Montoya and Michael Schumacher recovering through the pack
00:19:44is going to be very exciting.
00:19:45We're hearing that there's an incident involving car number 6,
00:19:48which is one Montoya, under investigation by the stewards.
00:19:51That's presumably the incident at the start.
00:19:53They're having a look at it,
00:19:55so let's hope they don't decide to punish him by giving him a black flag,
00:19:58stop-and-go penalty, anything like that.
00:20:00I remember saying in my pre-season previews
00:20:04that I thought those two were going to get together,
00:20:06not in spectacular accident fashion,
00:20:08but, you know, there's a seniority got to be established there.
00:20:12You were saying yesterday to me, James,
00:20:14that Montoya's passed Michael four times,
00:20:16and Michael passed him for the first time in Melbourne,
00:20:19but those two really are trying to stamp their authority.
00:20:22Michael to maintain it, Montoya to seize the high ground,
00:20:26and I think we're going to see a lot more of those two getting together.
00:20:29Well, let's hope they don't collide too often.
00:20:31I was talking to a member of Schumacher's camp,
00:20:33and in fact, he's going to get a drive-through penalty, Montoya,
00:20:36so one Montoya is going to be called into the pit lane.
00:20:40I'll tell you exactly how much time he'll lose.
00:20:42He will lose 20 seconds doing that.
00:20:44That's how long it takes to come into the pits and go back out again.
00:20:46And that, of course, then, is at 120 kilometers per hour
00:20:49from the start of the speed limit area
00:20:51to the white line at the exit of the pits.
00:20:53I've never seen that penalty applied before.
00:20:56Normally, it's a stop-and-go.
00:20:57I wasn't even aware that penalty existed, I have to say.
00:21:00It does now.
00:21:01It certainly does, and I know the stewards do have a certain amount of discretion on these things,
00:21:04but they've clearly seen something we haven't,
00:21:07because I couldn't really see anything other than Montoya trying to go around the outside,
00:21:11and Michael not willing to yield.
00:21:13Nothing I saw that suggested Montoya got it wrong.
00:21:16It may be that he monstered somebody else on his way through a different incident.
00:21:20We're presuming it's the incident at the start, but it might not be true.
00:21:23Here's the Jaguar team.
00:21:24They've been having a very tough weekend so far.
00:21:26That's Pedro de la Rosa.
00:21:27Looks like yet another nose change,
00:21:29and in this case, it looks like the bolts holding on the nose won't come off,
00:21:32or either that, or they can't get the jack underneath,
00:21:35but it's taking a long time.
00:21:36You can see the clock ticking away for de la Rosa,
00:21:39so obviously a lot of close contact in these early laps.
00:21:42It's only lap nine now, and a lot of nose cones have been changed.
00:21:47They want the car back up again.
00:21:49Clearly, they put a secondary stay underneath for safety or whatever,
00:21:55and that wasn't completely clear.
00:21:57They had to re-lift it up, so a very costly nose change for the Jaguar team.
00:22:01De la Rosa dropping from 15th place down to 19th,
00:22:04but we're looking at the scrap on track between Enrique Bernoldi
00:22:07and the Arrows in 11th place, in 10th place to make that,
00:22:10who's got ahead of Felipe Massa in the Sauber.
00:22:13Now, Arrows all weekend have been really quick
00:22:16when they've had the car on the track,
00:22:18but they've had a number of technical problems,
00:22:20as they had in Australia two weeks ago.
00:22:22Yesterday, though, in qualifying, Frentzen managed to get 11th place,
00:22:25showing this car has got some speed in it.
00:22:27Now, this is Jarno Trulli in the pits.
00:22:30Trulli in 14th place.
00:22:32Maybe he's got close contact damage as well.
00:22:35Couldn't possibly be in a scheduled stop, of course.
00:22:38They're on lap nine at the moment.
00:22:40Frentzen, you were talking about, who started so well on the grid,
00:22:43is down in 21st place.
00:22:45He must have been that Arrows we saw in the distant background
00:22:48when Michael Schumacher came in for his nose change
00:22:51at the end of the first lap of the Grand Prix.
00:22:53Barrichello's lead now up to 4.3 seconds.
00:22:57Action all the way through.
00:22:59Toyota having a good day.
00:23:00They're currently 8th and 9th, Salo and McNish.
00:23:04So, they're running well.
00:23:06This could be another one of those days
00:23:08where the tail end of the points are going to be dished out
00:23:11to teams that are not normally receiving them.
00:23:14Well, let's hope so. We saw a lot of that in Australia.
00:23:16But Rubens Barrichello, the race leader at the moment,
00:23:19as we enter lap 10,
00:23:21he's got an advantage of 4.8 seconds now over Ralf Schumacher.
00:23:25And it's interesting to look at Rubens' record around here,
00:23:28because he was 3rd in 2000 on his first appearance here for Ferrari.
00:23:32Last year, he was the runner-up.
00:23:34So, to complete the sequence, he's looking for that win this weekend.
00:23:37And Montoya, I think, is taken to the pit lane
00:23:39for his drive-through penalty.
00:23:42And as you say, that means negotiating the pit lane entry.
00:23:45120km an hour through the zone and back out the other end.
00:23:49We're not seeing it on screen,
00:23:51but I saw him flash past the commentary box window.
00:23:54So, Montoya, you're allowed to take any penalty
00:23:57within the next three laps.
00:23:59You have to take them. Ted in the pits.
00:24:01Martin, just looking at the body language of Sam Michael,
00:24:04who's the Williams tech boss, after Patrick Head, of course,
00:24:07who's the chief tech boss,
00:24:09it was a sense of injustice.
00:24:11It was a matter of who did the worst thing first.
00:24:13And they clearly believe that Michael's really severe chopper
00:24:16against Montoya was worse than what Montoya did.
00:24:19But then, of course, they would think that.
00:24:21Montoya just looked up at Sam Michael as he came through for that drive-by,
00:24:24as if to say, well, what he did was much worse than what I did to him.
00:24:28I know. I can well understand them being a bit miffed.
00:24:31If they haven't seen anything more than we've seen up here in the commentary box,
00:24:35there's nothing to suggest that Montoya was doing anything other
00:24:38than trying to lead a Grand Prix.
00:24:40But, of course, the other way of looking at it
00:24:42is that Michael's been punished already, hasn't he?
00:24:44He's right down the back of the field.
00:24:46He lost 47 seconds as a result of the incident.
00:24:48But, well, I'm sure we'll be debating that one afterwards
00:24:50in the press offices and in the bars of Sepang at the moment.
00:24:53Jarno Csoli retiring from the race.
00:24:55We saw him in the pits just a moment ago, and that's him going out.
00:24:59And we hear that Olivier Panis has stopped out on the circuit as well.
00:25:02So reasonably high attrition rate already.
00:25:04There is Panis in the BAR. A rotten weekend for him as well.
00:25:07Only managed to get out for the last 10 minutes of qualifying yesterday
00:25:10just due to a lot of technical problems with that BAR car.
00:25:13So he'll want to forget Sepang 2002.
00:25:15Yeah, the sad thing about BAR this weekend is they've not been reliable particularly,
00:25:19and they've been slow as well.
00:25:21So, as you said, they'll want to forget that.
00:25:23Villeneuve is currently in 12th place.
00:25:26Michael Schumacher up to 15th with the various retirements
00:25:30and people generally having problems having nose changes.
00:25:35So Schumacher is losing ground.
00:25:37I wonder if there was some other damage.
00:25:39You were talking about other aerodynamic pieces around the barge boards,
00:25:42particularly around the side of the cockpit.
00:25:44I wonder if Michael Schumacher lost some other bits
00:25:47because he's not having anything like the kind of pace we expected.
00:25:50Well, we'll find out soon.
00:25:51But at the moment as we work on lap 11,
00:25:54it's Rubens Barrichello leading from Ralf Schumacher by almost 5 seconds now.
00:25:58Then another 9 seconds back is Kimi Räikkönen.
00:26:00David Coulthard is with him.
00:26:02So is Nick Heidfeld and Jenson Button still in 6th place.
00:26:20Well, a pretty explosive start again to the Grand Prix
00:26:34and McLaren looking pretty good at the moment, you have to say.
00:26:37It looked like they were going to run a strategy that would work for them
00:26:41as everybody tries to do every time they go racing.
00:26:44But McLaren often stronger on Sunday in the race than they are in qualifying.
00:26:48Quite often they get the setup just a little bit wrong
00:26:50but then they come out of the box very strong on Sunday afternoon.
00:26:54Leiners turn, then they go over the timing beam.
00:26:589 tenths of a second behind Räikkönen and his Coulthard.
00:27:02And Heidfeld a further 1.4.
00:27:04Really not challenging quite as hard as I thought he would, Heidfeld and Sauber.
00:27:08Not perhaps showing the pace we expected after their stunning winter testing time.
00:27:12But nonetheless, 5th at the moment.
00:27:14Button is 6th and Montoya rejoined in 9th place and is currently absolutely flying.
00:27:20On board with him now as he heads down into turn 14, I believe that was.
00:27:26Sadly we've cut straight away.
00:27:28That's Barrichello, just come out of turn 8 on the next lap of course
00:27:32and into turn 9 negotiating the Jordan.
00:27:36Both Jordans then have had problems.
00:27:39They ran into each other, lost a front wing, one of them
00:27:43and the other lost a rear wing.
00:27:46And it seems as if Fisichella has come back into the race after that wing change.
00:27:51Yes, Fisichella two laps down on the rest of the field.
00:27:54We've also got Frentz in the lap down.
00:27:56We saw him in the pit lane right at the start.
00:27:58Jarno Culli we've seen has already retired from this race, as has Olivier Panis.
00:28:02So we've got 18, in fact De La Rosa is a lap down as well after that wing change.
00:28:07So only 17 cars still on the lead lap.
00:28:11And Rubens Barrichello still out in front.
00:28:14This is exactly where he wanted to be.
00:28:31Back live at Sepang, Malaysia.
00:28:33This is the right place to be because it's all going off here today.
00:28:36Rubens Barrichello leads this motor race ahead of Ralf Schumacher,
00:28:39Kimi Raikkonen third and David Coulthard fourth.
00:28:42Where's Michael Schumacher you may ask?
00:28:44Well, he's down in 13th place after an incident at the first corner with Juan Montoya.
00:28:49Montoya has been given a drive-through penalty, came through the pit lane two laps ago
00:28:54and he is now back in ninth place.
00:28:56He's 34 seconds behind the race leader and he's going like a rat up a drainpipe.
00:29:01Last time through a new lap record for him, fastest lap of the race.
00:29:05He's got his foot well and truly hammered onto the floor.
00:29:08Yes, I think he's an angry Montoya out there at the moment.
00:29:11And catching McNish and Salo very quickly.
00:29:14The two Toyota runners currently in seventh and eighth.
00:29:17So Montoya I think will be sweeping to those easily.
00:29:20The fastest man on the racetrack at the moment.
00:29:22And already looking at these computer times on another stunning lap.
00:29:26You're watching the race leader 5.2 seconds ahead.
00:29:30I think Ralf Schumacher is looking pretty handy.
00:29:32He's in second place. Car looks good.
00:29:34We know those Michelins come in and the further they go.
00:29:37And when they get rid of a bit of meat off of them.
00:29:40And keep an eye on Ralf Schumacher. I think he's looking pretty strong.
00:29:44Well, there's always the question that arises at this sort of stage.
00:29:46As we look at Michael Schumacher carving his way through the field in 12th place.
00:29:50Of what strategy everybody is using.
00:29:53It certainly looks as though Rubens Barrichello and Ralf Schumacher are on a similar sort of fuel though.
00:29:58Judging by their lap times.
00:30:00No more than two or three tenths of a second apart in speed.
00:30:03I certainly hope for Rubens Barrichello's sake that Ralf Schumacher has got a similar load of fuel.
00:30:07If he's got more fuel on board.
00:30:09Then he is looking very, very strong indeed.
00:30:11The McLarens, however, generally lapping about a second to a second point four slower than the lead bunch.
00:30:17And so that may mean they're carrying a little bit more fuel.
00:30:20So they're not completely out of the picture.
00:30:22Well, you've seen lots of cars in the pits here on F1 ITV today already.
00:30:25But only two that are completely out of the race.
00:30:27Panis stopped out on the track.
00:30:29Truly retired. Pushed back into the garage.
00:30:31They got Fizikela going again in the Jordan.
00:30:33He's two laps behind.
00:30:35They changed his rear wing.
00:30:37And Sata, who lost his front wing, running into the back of Fizikela.
00:30:41Two Jordan teammates.
00:30:42He's up to 17th place, but is also a lap down.
00:30:47Terrific scrap here between the arrows of Bernoldi in 10th place.
00:30:51Massa in 11th place in the Sauber.
00:30:54Powered by a Ferrari engine.
00:30:56And right behind them is Michael Schumacher, the reigning world champion.
00:31:00Also, I would imagine, fairly angry after what happened at the start.
00:31:03Let's have a look and see if he's lost any other parts of his bodywork.
00:31:06No, it looks like the car is intact.
00:31:08Currently lapping Schumacher.
00:31:10Well, that last lap was about three seconds slower than the race leaders.
00:31:14So obviously having trouble just getting his way through the traffic.
00:31:17But he's not closing, is he, on that Sauber very quickly?
00:31:19No, he did a 40.4. One minute 40.4.
00:31:22So it's about nine tenths.
00:31:24He cleared Villeneuve on that lap to take 12th place, James.
00:31:28So, kind of okay pace.
00:31:30He's matching Barrichello up front, it has to be said.
00:31:33But it's Montoya, the man who's putting in the times.
00:31:36And Montoya remains ninth, but is now right behind the Toyotas.
00:31:40And this, then, is Michael Schumacher in 12th, just behind Massa and Bernoldi.
00:31:46The two Brazilians squabbling over the end of the top ten.
00:31:52Well, Ferrari won't want the Sauber to hold them up for too long.
00:31:55Sauber are a loyal customer of Ferrari.
00:31:57They benefit greatly from their partnership with them.
00:31:59In fact, many people would argue that the reason the Saubers are so competitive,
00:32:03and let's not forget Nick Heidfeld is currently in fourth place,
00:32:06having got past David Coulthard unseen by us.
00:32:08So that's how competitive Sauber are today.
00:32:10How will Massa do with Schumacher coming up down the inside?
00:32:13It looks like an easy-peasy chocolate squeezy, and indeed it is.
00:32:16Coulthard has dropped back to seventh.
00:32:18Coulthard's got a problem.
00:32:20He was seventh over the line with a very, very slow lap time, David Coulthard.
00:32:26And he's down in seventh position.
00:32:28We haven't seen him coasting, but it does suggest he's got a problem.
00:32:32Michael then easily clears the Sauber.
00:32:35As you say, it's effectively a B team for Ferrari, really.
00:32:38Luis is in the pits with Jarno Trulli.
00:32:40That's right, I am indeed. An early bath for you today, Jarno.
00:32:43What put you out?
00:32:45I had a problem with the temperature at the end of the first lap.
00:32:49It's a shame because the car was running very well.
00:32:52I did a great start, overtook several cars on the braking, like Fisichella and Salo.
00:32:58Unfortunately, the temperature was too high.
00:33:01We came back, we checked the radiators, but there was nothing to do.
00:33:04There appeared to be various incidents on the first lap.
00:33:07Did you see anything of any of them?
00:33:09No, honestly, I just tried to keep away from the troubles.
00:33:12Thanks, Jarno.
00:33:13Just to update you on Olivier Pan, it's the other car out of the race today.
00:33:16That was a clutch failure.
00:33:18Thank you, Luis.
00:33:19So, Trulli then just with technical problems.
00:33:22What is the problem with Kulthar?
00:33:24That is Michael Schumacher in 11th place, trying to get past the arrows of Bernaldi.
00:33:31Bernaldi's got some good traction, good acceleration.
00:33:34Look at that, able to keep stretching it out.
00:33:37Remember Monaco last year, David Kulthar got stuck behind Enrique Bernaldi for about 50 laps.
00:33:42Schumacher won't have those kind of problems.
00:33:43This is a much easier track to overtake on.
00:33:45It is. Bernaldi getting a major wobble on the way into 7th.
00:33:48You can see the Ferrari in his mirrors.
00:33:50As you rightly point out, James, he's not one who's well known for just skipping out of the way.
00:33:55Michael then with a very good slipstream.
00:33:57Kulthar in the pit lane.
00:33:59Looks like he's got technical problems once again.
00:34:01Don't tell me it's another day when he's not going to score any points.
00:34:05Michael in good shape.
00:34:07Ted in the pits.
00:34:09Martin, it is another problem for David Kulthar.
00:34:12Oh, no, he's retiring. He's retiring.
00:34:14I better get out of the way because he's coming straight for me.
00:34:17Engine sounds. Well, he's still running, but it is definitely terminal for David Kulthar.
00:34:21Just a couple of seconds before we saw that,
00:34:23Adrian Newey did his usual thing of rushing off the pit lane, going to look at the telemetry.
00:34:28But that's it. He's out of the race.
00:34:30Zero points then from two Grands Prix for Kulthar.
00:34:33You saw as Ted was explaining that to us.
00:34:36And look, is that Bernaldi coming back again at Michael?
00:34:39Michael passed him down into Turn 1.
00:34:41Bernaldi came back at him and he'll turn in on you, Michael.
00:34:44You won't get through there.
00:34:46Amazing.
00:34:47This reminds me of back in 1990 when Jean Alessi in a Tyrrell had the audacity to overtake Ayrton Senna.
00:34:53And Senna couldn't quite believe it.
00:34:55He went past him and then Alessi passed him again.
00:34:57And that's exactly what we've got here today.
00:34:59Enrico Bernaldi, would you believe it, in an Arrows, powered by a customer Ford Cosworth engine.
00:35:05The same engine that you'd find in the back of a Jaguar has just overtaken Michael Schumacher in a Ferrari.
00:35:10Well, I never thought I'd live to see that.
00:35:12Well, it is for position, of course, and it's for a tenth position in this Grand Prix.
00:35:17So he's fully entitled to have a go back.
00:35:20No problem at all there.
00:35:21And I'd like to see Michael, having gone up the inside of him into one.
00:35:24And look at the extra grip Michael's got under braking.
00:35:27And that's where he's obviously going to pass him.
00:35:30He'll have another go at him into Turn 15, I'd imagine.
00:35:32And if not, back into Turn 1.
00:35:34But clearly Michael got out of shape somewhere in 1 and 2.
00:35:37And Bernaldi just came back.
00:35:38He's covering the line, but I think he's not going to hold him off this time around.
00:35:41Michael on an acute line.
00:35:43If Bernaldi's smart, he'll get a nice early run out and see if he can pick up that slipstream once again.
00:35:48But his car's not good enough under braking to repass him.
00:35:52Montoya, a new fastest lap of the race.
00:35:54Still not in the 1.38 yet, where the lap record is, but it's a 1.39.392.
00:35:59And Michael now is clear and will scamper off.
00:36:03Well, he certainly made it look easy for the second time, Michael Schumacher.
00:36:06A nice pass, no problems at all.
00:36:09Bernaldi, you have to say, gave him the space.
00:36:11But, well, that will have added a couple of noughts, I would imagine, to Bernaldi's wage claims for next season, won't it?
00:36:16He's proved that he's a real racer.
00:36:17He can take on the best in the world.
00:36:19Well, the man to watch at the moment, though, Martin, as you rightly say, is Juan Montoya.
00:36:22He's now, well, he's still 37 seconds behind the race leader.
00:36:26But he's closing in fast on Mika Salo in 6th place.
00:36:29That's the last of the points-paying positions.
00:36:31I haven't talked much about Toyota yet today, but Salo currently 6th.
00:36:35Alan McNish, Alan McNish's teammate, doing a super job at the moment in 8th place
00:36:39as Barrichello comes to put another lap on, looks like, well, it must be Sato.
00:36:47Or is it Fisichella? It's Fisichella. He's going three laps down now, Fisichella.
00:36:52Rubens still lapping in the 1.39s.
00:36:54Ralph Schumacher there now, a new fastest lap of the race.
00:36:57We're getting into the sweet spot where those Michelins have reduced the amount of rubber in the tread
00:37:02where they seem to pick up an awful lot of front grip.
00:37:05So the two fastest cars now by several tenths of a second on each lap.
00:37:10A Ralph Schumacher 2nd place and Montoya 7th place in the BMW Williams.
00:37:16And there's the confirmation.
00:37:17But that's going to change. That's now a 1.38.8 for Montoya.
00:37:21They're flying.
00:37:23They're trading fastest laps, the two Williams drivers.
00:37:25They'll both be being kept informed by their race engineers via the radio
00:37:30of the kind of pace that each other is setting.
00:37:32And we know, we know, don't we, how intense the rivalry is between these two drivers.
00:37:36They almost want to beat each other more than they want to beat Michael Schumacher.
00:37:40That's how hard they push.
00:37:41Montoya, though, the man with the fastest car on the track at the moment, as you say, Martin,
00:37:45a 1.38.872.
00:37:47And that's getting close to the fastest lap we've seen in race conditions so far this weekend.
00:37:52Well, the outright lap record here set in 2000, because we had rain last year, of course,
00:37:56was a 1.38.5.
00:37:58So they're homing in on that.
00:38:00Barrichello leads by 5.6 seconds from this man, Ralph Schumacher.
00:38:05Raikkonen, 16 seconds behind him in third place.
00:38:21An exciting motor race indeed, as we often have here in Malaysia,
00:38:25as you watch the race leader, Rubens Barrichello, putting yet another lap on Heinz-Hauer Frentzen.
00:38:29So Frentzen now two laps down on the leaders in 18th place.
00:38:33Just run you through some of the other people we haven't really talked about very much today.
00:38:37We know that Salo, as I say, was in 6th place with Montoya breathing down his neck in 7th.
00:38:41Behind them, McNish in 8th place.
00:38:44Michael Schumacher now up to 9th, having passed Enrique Bernaldi.
00:38:48As you look at the Michelin man there, he's one of the senior technicians, that guy,
00:38:51looking at the timing screens, realising, as we were saying,
00:38:55that the Michelin tyres are coming into that sweet spot now.
00:38:58The performance is really starting to come through.
00:39:01Felipe Massa is 11th.
00:39:03Jack Villeneuve is in 12th place for BAR.
00:39:05Eddie Irvine still going strong in 13th place for Jaguar.
00:39:09And then it's the two Minardis, and would you believe it,
00:39:12Alexander Jung, the local boy, Malaysian born and bred,
00:39:15is ahead of his teammate, Mark Webber, who was the hero of Melbourne.
00:39:20For Minardi.
00:39:25Still then, the Williams, the two fastest drivers on the racetrack.
00:39:28They really look menacing.
00:39:30I think Barrichello now will start to come under pressure.
00:39:33Ralf has him in his sights.
00:39:35Barrichello was going out of Turn 3.
00:39:37Ralf was negotiating Turn 2 already.
00:39:39They're getting quite close.
00:39:41Well, we were talking before, when Michael Schumacher went out,
00:39:46had to go into the pits and change his nose cone,
00:39:48how he would cut through the field.
00:39:49Well, in terms of position, he's certainly done that.
00:39:51But in terms of the time, he finds himself behind the race leader.
00:39:54He's now three seconds further back relative to Barrichello
00:39:58than he was at that time.
00:40:00He's now 50 seconds behind Barrichello as we were at lap 20.
00:40:04Getting relatively close to the window now
00:40:06for the two stoppers to make their first stop.
00:40:09It's a 55 lap race, 194 miles the race distance.
00:40:14And it's been interesting already,
00:40:16but it's about to get a whole bunch more interesting.
00:40:36You're back live at Sepang.
00:40:37You can see Sauber making a pit stop,
00:40:39but more significantly in the background there,
00:40:41the Ferrari mechanics.
00:40:42That's Nick Heidfeld now you're looking at.
00:40:44The Ferrari mechanics, though,
00:40:45ready to welcome one of their two drivers.
00:40:48And we're waiting to see which one it is.
00:40:49It's Michael Schumacher has come into the pit lane.
00:40:52There he is in the top of your frame,
00:40:54coming in from ninth place.
00:40:56So this is probably Ross Brawn
00:40:58deciding to do something a bit different
00:40:59to try and get Michael up the field.
00:41:01Either that or he's got a problem.
00:41:03Now, I still think they feel Michael light
00:41:05in this sure knowledge that he was going to be
00:41:07into the first corner first
00:41:08and just dive off into the lead of this race and stretch.
00:41:11But he's not been fast
00:41:13considering how little fuel he's had on board.
00:41:16Relatively then just 20 laps worth of fuel
00:41:19did Michael Schumacher have.
00:41:20And that really makes it even more of a surprise
00:41:23at his lack of pace
00:41:24as he's been coming back through the field.
00:41:26Barrichello leads by 5.3 seconds.
00:41:29And Williams have consistently
00:41:31in the last three or four laps
00:41:32been faster than anybody else.
00:41:35And they're looking menacing.
00:41:36Montoya then is now just up behind Mikasalo
00:41:39in sixth place.
00:41:40Just four tenths of a second.
00:41:42So we can expect Montoya
00:41:44to be in the points anytime soon.
00:41:47And Jenson Button is just a further half second
00:41:50down the road in fifth.
00:41:52That's Alex Young coming into stop from 15th place.
00:41:55Was in front of his teammate Mark Webber
00:41:57before that stop.
00:41:58So he's running really strongly here at Sepang
00:42:00to be in front of Webber
00:42:02who let's not forget was the hero of Melbourne
00:42:04a few weeks ago.
00:42:05That's not going right, is it?
00:42:06Oh, get it in gear.
00:42:07Oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:42:08Oh, that was a bit like me when I started to drive.
00:42:10But he's got it away anyway.
00:42:12These clutches must be very awkward to get to bite.
00:42:14They're hand steering wheel mounted clutches now, aren't they?
00:42:17Yeah, I don't think it was a clutch problem.
00:42:18I think he just wasn't in gear.
00:42:19So they're actually...
00:42:21No, they're OK when you get used to them.
00:42:23But look, that's Montoya.
00:42:25He has cleared Salo.
00:42:26He is in sixth.
00:42:27And he is just behind fifth place
00:42:29men Jenson Button
00:42:30who makes a mistake in turn two.
00:42:32Montoya couldn't make anything of it.
00:42:34He also had to get out of the gas.
00:42:36But we know just how fast that car is.
00:42:38And look at the way he will now home in.
00:42:40But it'll be tough.
00:42:41It's such a short braking zone into turn four
00:42:44that really not a good chance to overtake.
00:42:47He'll now have to bide his time through five, six, seven and eight.
00:42:51He may have a slot into nine for a desperate last brake.
00:42:55But I think he'll have to wait till nearer the end of the lap
00:42:58because he's struggling in the turbulent air.
00:43:00And it seems like Barrichello is now due in the pits.
00:43:04Ferrari out again.
00:43:05Barrichello then in this time.
00:43:07So as we thought, he has a little less fuel than the Williams.
00:43:12Williams looking very strong at this time.
00:43:14Williams responding.
00:43:16They are also out into the pit lane.
00:43:18It's going to be a straightforward race
00:43:20if indeed it is Ralf Schumacher that's coming into the pits.
00:43:22There is Rubens Barrichello though, the race leader.
00:43:24Up onto the jacks he goes.
00:43:26Off come the old Bridgestone tyres.
00:43:28Brand new tyres you can see going onto that.
00:43:30A very short fuel indeed.
00:43:32That was really very little fuel going into that car.
00:43:35And where is the Williams?
00:43:36Is it going to be Ralf Schumacher?
00:43:37Or is it going to be Juan Montoya coming in?
00:43:39We're just waiting to see now.
00:43:41No sign.
00:43:45Has Ralf Schumacher crossed the start finish line?
00:43:47No, there.
00:43:48That's one of the McLarens.
00:43:49So that's Rubens Barrichello who's going to rejoin behind Kimi Räikkönen.
00:43:53So that's going to put Barrichello back on the track in third place.
00:43:56Indeed it has.
00:43:58Ralf Schumacher did not pit.
00:44:00It was Montoya who pitted.
00:44:03And let's have a listen to this pit stop as Montoya, as the Williams team.
00:44:10Hear the air guns, tyres going on.
00:44:12Selected first gear, little clunk of first gear.
00:44:15And off he goes.
00:44:16Drop to clutch, traction control working overtime.
00:44:198.6 seconds.
00:44:20He lost a couple to the Ferrari pit stop.
00:44:23Was absolutely brilliant at 6.6.
00:44:268.6 is about the norm.
00:44:28So Montoya rejoins, I suspect, in about 8th or 9th place.
00:44:33But the bad news is he's rejoined behind that Sauber, you can see there.
00:44:37And I suspect that the idea, as we look at Bernoldi there,
00:44:40who was going so well and was running in 12th place,
00:44:44he's had some kind of problem, Bernoldi, and has gone off the track.
00:44:47You can see the marshals there trying to move him.
00:44:49But I suspect what Ferrari were trying to do
00:44:51was get Barrichello back out in front of Räikkönen, and it failed.
00:44:55Räikkönen is in front on the racetrack of Rubens Barrichello,
00:44:58and there you can see it on your screens now.
00:45:00That's not what Rubens Barrichello or Ferrari had in mind here.
00:45:03No, that'll be difficult for them, of course.
00:45:05He's got fresher tyres, but a little bit more fuel on board now, Barrichello,
00:45:09having had that stop.
00:45:10They didn't fuel it too heavily, and you're right.
00:45:12I think they kept it short to try and relaunch him back onto the racetrack
00:45:17ahead of the McLaren.
00:45:18It didn't quite pay off, did it?
00:45:20Räikkönen could be leading his first Grand Prix anytime soon
00:45:23depending on when the new leader, Ralf Schumacher, pits.
00:45:27Ralf Schumacher now lapping in the 1.38s as well,
00:45:30and his lead 21.4 seconds as he crossed the line this time around.
00:45:35And if you're wondering why didn't Ralf Schumacher pit,
00:45:37well, we don't know why he didn't come in,
00:45:39but certainly the Williams mechanics,
00:45:41although they came out onto the pit apron
00:45:43looking as though they were going to go for a showdown with Ferrari,
00:45:45they decided not to do that.
00:45:47They went back in, so Ralf Schumacher still to pit.
00:45:49This is lap 23.
00:45:51You're looking at the battle for second place.
00:45:53Kimi Räikkönen in his second outing for McLaren.
00:45:57Got a podium first time out in Australia,
00:45:59currently running P2,
00:46:01with Rubens Barrichello in the Ferrari breathing down his neck.
00:46:03And we should say a word for Jenson Button,
00:46:05who's doing a super job at the moment in fourth place.
00:46:08Yet to make a pit stop, but nevertheless,
00:46:10Button in the Renault underlining the fantastic performance
00:46:13he's put in all weekend and going very strongly,
00:46:16as is Nick Heidfeld in fifth place.
00:46:19That's the scrap for second then.
00:46:21Räikkönen, Barrichello, Barrichello's stopped.
00:46:24We can assume Räikkönen is on a long one-stopper,
00:46:27so I'd be surprised if he's in any time soon.
00:46:31He's looking in good shape this afternoon too.
00:46:33Mark Webber has stopped out on the track somewhere.
00:46:36It's Cathy Auger, the wife of Mansour Auger,
00:46:38one of the part owners of the McLaren team.
00:46:41So we think Webber's joined the list of retirees,
00:46:45which is David Coulthard, technical.
00:46:47He's stopped out on the racetrack, technical.
00:46:49Jarno Trulli retired into the pit garage.
00:46:52Technical problems.
00:46:54So Ralf Schumacher's lead, 21.4 seconds,
00:46:59and maintaining it at the moment.
00:47:01So Räikkönen also now doing nicely on those Michelin tyres.
00:47:04They do seem to enjoy a good long run in hot conditions, don't they?
00:47:08They certainly do.
00:47:09Now you can see the battle for second place
00:47:11between Räikkönen and Barrichello,
00:47:12and this time Barrichello is a lot closer.
00:47:14Bear in mind, he's got fuel on board.
00:47:16He's not taken too much fuel on board.
00:47:18We haven't actually worked out exactly how much he took on,
00:47:21but it's probably not much more than about 40 kilos of fuel,
00:47:24which is probably about 15 laps worth.
00:47:27So a tactic being played here.
00:47:29We're not exactly certain how it's going to pull out,
00:47:32because we don't know how much fuel Räikkönen's got on board,
00:47:35but it's certainly going to be interesting,
00:47:37as it always is when two cars have got
00:47:39completely different race strategies on the way.
00:47:41Still trying to find out what happened to David Coulthard.
00:47:45The team don't always want to tell you, James,
00:47:47as you know well from when you worked down there,
00:47:49but particularly McLaren can understand that,
00:47:51and they don't always know immediately anyway.
00:47:53It takes a little bit of analysis to understand
00:47:55exactly what went wrong on what is a very complex piece of machinery.
00:47:59Räikkönen appears to be able to stretch his legs.
00:48:01He's under pressure, under braking,
00:48:03but around the rest of the track
00:48:06appears to have more than enough speed.
00:48:09Well, there's Felipe Massa making his first stop,
00:48:12and not a pretty tidy one too.
00:48:13We're hoping to catch a word with David Coulthard shortly.
00:48:16I'm sure Louise, if she always gets her man,
00:48:19I'm sure she will this time, never let us down.
00:48:21But Ralf Schumacher on lap 25, still leading.
00:48:24And interestingly, Schumacher was one of...
00:48:26Ralf Schumacher was one of the few drivers
00:48:27that actually went back to Europe
00:48:29between Australia and this race.
00:48:31Most of them stayed out here to get fit.
00:48:33And look at this! Räikkönen's blown up!
00:48:35That's a blown motor from Räikkönen.
00:48:38We assume it looks that way.
00:48:40It's coming through one of the...
00:48:42It's coming through the left bank exhaust,
00:48:44and it seems as if Räikkönen was squirming around
00:48:46in that last corner.
00:48:47Maybe he's losing some oil.
00:48:49And I think a lick of flame under there too,
00:48:52I saw briefly.
00:48:53So the second McLaren retires.
00:48:55Ted, what can you tell us?
00:48:56Well, I've been looking at the mechanics
00:48:58who've been taking apart David Coulthard's car.
00:49:00Now, they've been looking at the engine on Coulthard's car.
00:49:03Now, I can't say for sure because I don't know,
00:49:05but it does look like it's a Mercedes-Benz engine failure
00:49:08for both of these cars now.
00:49:09But we don't know that for certain as yet, Martin.
00:49:13Okay, well, I said yesterday that the panic gossip
00:49:16is they're a little bit down on power,
00:49:17but he certainly didn't seem to lack power down the straights.
00:49:20But unfortunately, he has lacked reliability.
00:49:23And we don't know for sure what Coulthard's problem was,
00:49:26but that pretty much looked like an engine failure, didn't it?
00:49:29Yes, Coulthard had an engine fire on Friday,
00:49:31one of the reasons why he didn't get much track time
00:49:34in the practice sessions this weekend.
00:49:37And certainly, Raikkonen's problem is engine-related.
00:49:40It's a very difficult situation when you're chasing more power.
00:49:43The temptation, I would imagine, to turn up the wick
00:49:46and get a bit more performance,
00:49:47but you've got to trade that off against reliability,
00:49:49and it's very difficult.
00:49:51There's a terrific scrap in Germany
00:49:53between BMW and Mercedes for marketing, for image,
00:49:56for brand, all that kind of thing.
00:49:58At the moment, BMW have the upper hand,
00:50:00and Mercedes under quite a lot of pressure
00:50:03as Ralf Schumacher starts lap 26.
00:50:05Jenson Button up into third place then.
00:50:07He's yet to pit.
00:50:08He's doing a great race.
00:50:10He obviously started very fat on fuel,
00:50:12so Ralf Schumacher hasn't pitted.
00:50:14He's leading, of course, 24.4 seconds ahead of Barrichello.
00:50:18They've both got to stop one more time like that,
00:50:21so that is a very close race between those two.
00:50:24And Button hasn't stopped in third place either,
00:50:27and he has to have a great chance of a podium position.
00:50:30Raikkonen is now out of fourth place,
00:50:31so Heidfeld moves up.
00:50:33Montoya then moves up into fifth.
00:50:35Yes, and we saw Michael Schumacher at the start of this race
00:50:38collide with Juan Montoya
00:50:39and go to the back of the field,
00:50:41having changed his nose cone.
00:50:42Well, he's now 80 seconds behind the race leader,
00:50:45Ralf Schumacher, in eighth place,
00:50:47but he has made one pit stop for fuel,
00:50:50so he's not a contender at the moment
00:50:52for even a podium position as it stands,
00:50:54but it may well be that as the midfield runners
00:50:56between him and the leaders,
00:50:57Salo, Heidfeld, Raikkonen, etc.,
00:51:00well, Raikkonen's out, of course.
00:51:01It hasn't come through on the computer yet,
00:51:03but as those guys come in for their stops,
00:51:05Michael Schumacher will start to move up into the picture.
00:51:08There's Jenson Button then, our new third place man.
00:51:11He's just done the fastest first sector of his race so far,
00:51:14so it seems like the car's getting better and better.
00:51:18Jaguar of De La Rosa in the pits.
00:51:21De La Rosa came out of...
00:51:23Sorry, it's...
00:51:25It is indeed De La Rosa.
00:51:27Yeah, he came in from 15th place.
00:51:29Salo pits then in the Toyota.
00:51:31He was 6th when he pitted.
00:51:33Yes, Salo.
00:51:34It looks like he's going straight into the garage, though.
00:51:36That is...
00:51:37Well, that's one kind of pit stop, isn't it?
00:51:38That's it. Kaputski for the Toyota.
00:51:41And so now, it's very interesting, isn't it?
00:51:43Because Raikkonen's dropped out
00:51:44and Salo's dropped out as well,
00:51:46and that means Michael Schumacher is now in the points
00:51:48in 6th place, would you believe, after all that.
00:51:51So Ralf Schumacher's leading from Barrichello.
00:51:53Button third, Heidfeld fourth,
00:51:55but he's made a stop.
00:51:56So has Barrichello.
00:51:57There's Michael Schumacher.
00:51:58Look how much he's chucking that car about.
00:52:00Now he's in 6th place,
00:52:01but still that matter of 80 seconds behind the race leader.
00:52:05Yes, he stopped twice.
00:52:06Once for a new nose, once for a scheduled pit stop.
00:52:09What's fun looking, though,
00:52:10is he's only 13 seconds behind Montoya.
00:52:13Wouldn't it be nice?
00:52:14I mean, they're saying on there,
00:52:15Michael Schumacher one stop.
00:52:16That's absolutely not correct.
00:52:18It's Montoya who stopped once.
00:52:20Montoya came through the pits for a...
00:52:23Obviously, his drive through wasn't a pit stop as such,
00:52:26but Schumacher has definitely been in the pits
00:52:28twice this afternoon.
00:52:30Ralf Schumacher then comes to lap Alan McNish
00:52:34and does so comfortably deep on the brakes
00:52:37into turn nine.
00:52:39Ralf Schumacher leading now by 24.8 seconds.
00:52:43The sole remaining Toyota in the race,
00:52:45Alan McNish, after the retirement of Micasalo,
00:52:48but they've certainly acquitted themselves very well here.
00:52:51I think it's fair to say.
00:52:52Running in the points for the second race in a row
00:52:55after their first...
00:52:56This is actually their Grand Prix debut season.
00:52:58So Toyota would be well pleased if they can get one car
00:53:01to the finish, but McNish looking a bit leery there
00:53:03on the way out.
00:53:04Ralf Schumacher, though, at the moment,
00:53:06beginning to pull out his gap over Rubens Barrichello.
00:53:09Last time through, he was 7 tenths of a second
00:53:12faster than the Brazilian,
00:53:14and he wants to win this motor race very badly.
00:53:18Three times a winner in last season.
00:53:20His teammate Montoya has won.
00:53:23As we have a look again at Ralf Schumacher
00:53:25lapping that Toyota.
00:53:27This is really where Ralf Schumacher's championship charge
00:53:30will have to start, because he didn't score any points
00:53:32in Australia after that collision.
00:53:34But a tidy move on McNish to lap him.
00:53:37Ralf was very committed in there, wasn't he?
00:53:39Good job Alan was letting him through,
00:53:40because I don't think Ralf would have stopped.
00:53:42That is Villeneuve on what I believe to be a scheduled stop.
00:53:46He was in eighth place when he went in the pits,
00:53:49but lapping about two to three seconds off the ultimate pace, sadly.
00:53:58Beautiful shot of the rear of the Williams there,
00:54:01going through that fantastic flick-flack change of direction
00:54:03as we see Jacques Villeneuve rejoining the race in eighth place.
00:54:07This is a wonderful venue, isn't it?
00:54:09If you're planning to go to an overseas Grand Prix,
00:54:12put this one very near the top of your list.
00:54:14It's a long way away, but it's worth the effort.
00:54:16Wonderful facility and good racing.
00:54:18And there then is a Jaguar off the road.
00:54:20Ted is in the pits.
00:54:22Martin, I'm down here at the McLaren garage with Adrian Newey.
00:54:25Adrian, it looked like engine, it sounded like engine.
00:54:28What was it?
00:54:29Yeah, on David's car, we lost power.
00:54:31We don't know the reason for that yet, but we lost power.
00:54:34He was lapping slow, slowly.
00:54:36We weren't sure what was happening,
00:54:37so we felt it was safer to pull him in and stop him.
00:54:40Not on David's car.
00:54:41David, give me an engine blower for some description.
00:54:45So yet another failure, but this time engine related.
00:54:48Do you think you can get your technical side back on track
00:54:51for the next few races?
00:54:52I hope so.
00:54:53It's disappointing we had good pre-season reliability,
00:54:56but obviously only one finish out of four starts,
00:55:00which is a pretty poor record.
00:55:03So we've just got to go back and try and understand the problems.
00:55:07Thanks very much, Adrian.
00:55:08Eddie Irvine pitting then.
00:55:10We saw him run into the back of Alex Young.
00:55:12He was lapping Young at the time.
00:55:14It was not for position.
00:55:15The front wing is wedged underneath the front floor pan.
00:55:20And there you see Eddie running wide, no front grip.
00:55:23And in fact, his front does be lifted off the ground with that problem.
00:55:27And he seemed somewhat angry and surprised that Young came across in front of him.
00:55:32But it seemed to me that Young was just taking his normal line.
00:55:35Irvine in the pits then.
00:55:36He'll be really angry about this because he qualified a miserable 20th.
00:55:39You can see his rear wheel spinning there.
00:55:40So he's obviously got some sort of problem.
00:55:42But he had qualified in 20th place.
00:55:44So to find himself in ninth after such a poor qualifying was a terrific effort.
00:55:49But is he going to get back in the motor race?
00:55:51He certainly lights up the rear tires, doesn't he?
00:55:54And well, let's see what he can do.
00:55:56This Jaguar R3 has been quite a talking point really, hasn't it?
00:56:00They're talking about maybe replacing it for Imola onwards with last year's car.
00:56:05But certainly the way it's been going this afternoon, they might have to review that.
00:56:08It's been going quite well with Eddie Irvine at the wheel.
00:56:10Yeah, actually Irvine will get away with it.
00:56:12He lost a lot of time on the way in, of course, and recovering onto the racetrack.
00:56:16But it's in a window.
00:56:17He hadn't stopped up until then.
00:56:18He's on a one-stopper for the afternoon.
00:56:20So it was pretty much in a reasonable window to take on fuel anyway.
00:56:24So that minimized the downside of that and ironically may not affect his race position too much.
00:56:30Ralf Schumacher, the lead is staying at 24.4 seconds.
00:56:35Barrichello is really pegging him at this stage.
00:56:38Ralf, of course, still has not stopped.
00:56:41He's started the race very heavy indeed.
00:56:43He's just done a new lap record of this racetrack, 138.369.
00:56:50That's a couple of tenths inside the mark and that is how well his car is going.
00:56:55And it looks like it's sticking nicely at the back end.
00:56:58He was pushing the throttle hard on the way out of 7th and 8th there.
00:57:01No problems for braking in 9th.
00:57:03He looks like he's got the complete motor car underneath him this afternoon.
00:57:10Yes, in the early stages after Michael Schumacher got involved in that collision,
00:57:14we saw Rubens Barrichello and Ralf Schumacher trading fast laps.
00:57:18It seemed that Ralf Schumacher was able to live with Barrichello when Barrichello was leading.
00:57:24Never more than four or five seconds behind him.
00:57:26And now we realize just how much more fuel Ralf was carrying at that time.
00:57:31It just shows you how well balanced this Williams car is.
00:57:34That wasn't the story of the whole weekend, certainly.
00:57:37On Friday, they were struggling to get the speed of the Ferraris,
00:57:40but by race day you have to give a lot of credit to the engineers.
00:57:44And Louise is down in the pits with David Coulthard.
00:57:47I am indeed, James. I've got my man.
00:57:48David, not a good weekend for you really at all, has it been?
00:57:51No, a terrible weekend.
00:57:52Obviously, it didn't go off on the road a good footing
00:57:54when we went out in the first session and stopped after one lap.
00:57:58I'm quite disappointed because obviously we benefited from the incident with Michael and Montoya
00:58:03and I was quite comfortable in behind Kimi because I felt I could go a lap longer at the pit stop
00:58:12and that would give me the advantage I needed to jump him.
00:58:14Of course, we don't get to find out if the car doesn't run.
00:58:17The team appear to have a bit of homework to do.
00:58:19Do you think you can get on top of these problems before we go to Brazil?
00:58:22Well, the frustrating thing is the car actually ran very reliably during winter testing
00:58:26and obviously we were maybe a little bit optimistic about our performance hopes
00:58:32based on what we did around Valencia and Barcelona.
00:58:35We never tested against Ferrari, of course.
00:58:37So, we certainly have had reliability.
00:58:39It's a fact we did more kilometres in testing than any year previous before coming to the first race.
00:58:43So, it's a bit confusing, but you're absolutely right.
00:58:46We know this isn't the way to win races.
00:58:48So, a lot of work to do.
00:58:51The only saving grace at the moment is it looks as if Michael Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya
00:58:55are not going to come away from this race with a big haul of points.
00:58:59And, of course, Ralf Schumacher and Barrichello not scoring in the first round
00:59:03because they had the big crash in the first corner at Melbourne.
00:59:06Ralf looking very, very strong this afternoon.
00:59:08He stretched that lead out to 26.8 seconds.
00:59:13And you have to think that's because he knows he's imminently due in for a pit stop
00:59:18and he needs everything he can.
00:59:20That should be enough, James, to get him back out in the lead of this race, shouldn't it?
00:59:24Well, it's going to be touch and go.
00:59:26The computer models say, as we look at Mark Webber getting out,
00:59:29a little bit of a shove to get him going in that Minardi.
00:59:31Obviously, we're in trouble getting those things into first gear and getting them out of pit stops today.
00:59:35But, certainly, I've been told that it takes about, well, 29 seconds in total
00:59:41to make a one-stop pit stop here.
00:59:43We're just past half distance in this race, though.
00:59:46There's lap 31 of 55.
00:59:48And Ralf Schumacher expected in this time.
00:59:50The Williams mechanics are out in the pit lane.
00:59:53So, we expect to see Ralf Schumacher.
00:59:55In fact, he is in the pit lane now.
00:59:57Hits the 120-kilometer board and comes down towards his pit.
01:00:01This is a very, very important stop for the Williams team.
01:00:10Look at the tires going on.
01:00:11Yeah, they're very well used already.
01:00:13And if the tires that came off are missing an awful lot of grooves,
01:00:16then I think there could be a bit of controversy at some point.
01:00:19So, we didn't get a great shot of the ones that are coming off.
01:00:22The ones going on are well scrubbed.
01:00:23They spend most of the weekend scrubbing their tires down.
01:00:26And, no, Barrichello goes through.
01:00:27So, it hasn't paid off.
01:00:28But, of course, Barrichello has got to stop again this afternoon.
01:00:31We know he's on a two-stopper.
01:00:33We know he was short-fueled.
01:00:34He did a 6.6-second stop.
01:00:36And Button has pitted from third place as well.
01:00:39Jenson Button makes his one and only, hopefully, stop of the afternoon.
01:00:43Looking very solid in third.
01:00:45He's 26 seconds ahead of Montoya in fourth.
01:00:48And we think Montoya's got to stop again.
01:00:51So, Button looking very strong.
01:00:53A miraculous pit stop was Weber, because I was told
01:00:56that he'd parked up out the back somewhere through my radio can.
01:00:59So, it was a very good stop from him.
01:01:01Well, indeed it was.
01:01:02Lap 32.
01:01:04Ralf Schumacher, you can see, out on track.
01:01:06But he's behind Rubens Barrichello now.
01:01:08So, Rubens back in the lead of this motor race.
01:01:10Jenson Button has just pitted from third place,
01:01:13which promotes one Montoya.
01:01:15And then we've got Nick Heidfeld and Michael Schumacher also still in the mix.
01:01:19Plenty more excitement, though, still to come here in Sepang.
01:01:393.7 seconds currently the margin, then, between Rubens Barrichello and Ralf Schumacher.
01:01:45We're into the pit stop window here.
01:01:47We can see cars coming in left, right and centre.
01:01:50Jaguar of Eddie Irvine is back in again.
01:01:52Presumably, some sort of problem.
01:01:55But we've had a flurry of visitors in the last two or three laps.
01:01:58This is absolutely bang on target for a one-stop strategy.
01:02:02And you have to say that Williams have played their hand very skillfully today,
01:02:06as regards that.
01:02:07They weren't always the best team when it came to race strategy.
01:02:10Certainly in the days when Jacques Villeneuve was taking on Michael Schumacher
01:02:14and before that, Damon Hill was taking on Michael Schumacher.
01:02:18Williams quite often messed it up on a Sunday afternoon.
01:02:20But so far, so good today, as we look at Giancarlo Fisichella,
01:02:24victim of part of the shenanigans on the first lap.
01:02:28This is his third visit to the pits, I believe.
01:02:31Currently three laps down in 17th place.
01:02:35Yes, two scheduled stops.
01:02:37And in fact, I think that's his first scheduled stop, James.
01:02:40I think the other stop was obviously to fix the rear wing.
01:02:43So that's his first scheduled stop of the afternoon.
01:02:45Although, of course, they would have refuelled it when he was in having the wing fixed.
01:02:51So he's completely out of kilter, actually.
01:02:54As I'm sure Eddie Jordan is feeling at the moment as well.
01:02:56It's been a brutal start to the season for him.
01:03:00Fisichella has managed to hoist the car up into the pits.
01:03:04Fisichella has managed to hoist the car up into 7th, 8th, 9th position
01:03:09through qualifying the first two races.
01:03:11But it's really been through Fisichella's own efforts that that's happened.
01:03:15This car is not, this Jordan car, is not on top of its game at the moment.
01:03:20As we look at second place man, Ralf Schumacher,
01:03:233.8 seconds behind the race leader, Rubens Barrichello.
01:03:27And there's Ralf's big brother fighting away, as always, in 6th place.
01:03:34Ooh!
01:03:47Lap 34 at Sepang in Malaysia.
01:03:50Rubens Barrichello leading the race from Ralf Schumacher in 2nd place.
01:03:545 seconds is the margin.
01:03:55You're looking at Michael Schumacher, who had pole position but is now in 6th place.
01:04:00And in 3rd is Juan Montoya, Jenson Button is 4th,
01:04:04and Nick Heidfeld still going very strongly for Sauber in 5th place.
01:04:08Now, Ralf Schumacher has made his one and only pit stop of the day.
01:04:12We are still expecting that Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher
01:04:16in the two Ferraris have to make another stop.
01:04:18So at the moment, the pendulum, which always swings from left to right,
01:04:22forwards and backwards in Formula 1,
01:04:24would appear to be very much towards Williams at the moment.
01:04:27I think so.
01:04:28Crucial stage of the race for Barrichello.
01:04:31He's really got to put some hot laps in if he wants to have a chance of winning this Grand Prix.
01:04:34No doubt about it.
01:04:35Ralf then now back in the 1 minute 40s, having set a new lap record of 1.38.3.
01:04:41Of course, he's just taken a big dollop of fuel on board to get him to the end of the Grand Prix.
01:04:46We know they short-fueled the Ferrari.
01:04:48Took just 6.6 seconds to fuel it and change the tyres.
01:04:53And a great stop for them.
01:04:55But 5 second lead it was last time around.
01:04:59The data you were looking at your screeners, James, was saying that was already a lap out of date.
01:05:04So Barrichello now needs to put in some very, very hot laps.
01:05:08What's interesting is Michael Schumacher currently in 6th
01:05:11is beginning to home in on Heidfeld, 5th place man, who's just 2.8 seconds ahead.
01:05:17You're looking at the battle for 10th place between Pedro de la Rosa in the Jaguar and Mark Webber.
01:05:23It's been an eventful day for Jaguar.
01:05:25De la Rosa has already changed the nose cone so far today.
01:05:28And look at this, Michael Schumacher.
01:05:30Oh, sorry, Rubens Barrichello carving his way through the McNish-Massa battle.
01:05:35That's the battle for 7th place.
01:05:36It's been raging for several laps now.
01:05:39And you have to say McNish is doing a super job for Toyota here in 7th place.
01:05:42He only needs one more driver to drop out and he's going to be in the points.
01:05:50Barrichello then. McNish has been very sensible with the leaders coming through.
01:05:54Remember, he let Ralph through in a very sensible way.
01:05:58And look at the speed of that Ferrari.
01:06:00Those turns are super difficult because one leads directly into there.
01:06:05The exit of one is the entry to another.
01:06:07And it's 150, 160 miles now.
01:06:10You've got to be very, very accurate and committed.
01:06:13But if you get it wrong, you fly off the road in terrifying fashion.
01:06:18But a thrill to drive, no doubt about it.
01:06:20That then is Button who's down to 4th place now after his one and only stop.
01:06:26I think he'll regain 3rd when Montoya stops.
01:06:31And Michael Schumacher is homing in still then on Heidfeld and Button.
01:06:35He's 1.4 behind Heidfeld and 3.9 behind Button.
01:06:41But we think he's got to stop again.
01:06:42Louise is in the pits with Eddie Irvine.
01:06:44I am indeed, Martin.
01:06:45Eddie, I take it Mr. Jung's not really your favourite person today?
01:06:48I don't know whether he drives that line normally or he just made a mistake and didn't see it.
01:06:54I don't know.
01:06:56I was coming in that lap or the next lap, so I had to push.
01:07:00He made it look like he was leaving me all the room in the world and just chopped across.
01:07:04Maybe that's his line.
01:07:06I don't know for sure.
01:07:08What actually caused you to stop, though?
01:07:10It looks like we lost hydraulic pressure before the pit stop.
01:07:13So as I came into the pits, it wouldn't disengage the clutch.
01:07:16And that stalled him.
01:07:18We couldn't get pressure for the clutch, so it started slipping.
01:07:22And Rubens Barrichello has made a pit stop.
01:07:25Now the key question is, does he get out in front of Juan Montoya?
01:07:27Because Montoya was just 30 seconds behind him on the racetrack.
01:07:32What's going on here?
01:07:33Where is Montoya?
01:07:34Can we see him?
01:07:35Has he already gone through?
01:07:36He'll have long gone through, James, won't he, Montoya?
01:07:38Sorry, you're talking about Montoya.
01:07:39Yeah, Ralph.
01:07:40Ralph's gone through.
01:07:4132.7.
01:07:42He'll be nowhere near, yeah.
01:07:44So Montoya will maintain his third place,
01:07:48but we're sure Montoya's also got to stop again.
01:07:51This is the battle then for fifth place
01:07:54between Michael Schumacher and Nick Heidfeldt.
01:07:59And Schumacher really in the sweet spot for a good tow.
01:08:02Heidfeldt covering the inside line.
01:08:04Michael's car is very good under braking.
01:08:06And look, it was easy in the end.
01:08:08Well, that's the second time he's made a pass on a Sauber look very easy.
01:08:11And let's not forget, as I said before,
01:08:13that Sauber are a major customer of Ferrari.
01:08:15Not saying for a moment that they would throw away valuable points
01:08:18because that was fifth place Heidfeldt was sitting in.
01:08:21And he's just given away a point, at least to Michael Schumacher, by doing that.
01:08:24But certainly did look pretty easy for Michael.
01:08:27And he's now up into fifth place.
01:08:29Still 52 seconds, though, behind his own teammate,
01:08:33the race leader, Rubens Barrichello.
01:08:35But, well, we know that the Ferraris have got to stop again.
01:08:37So a lot more to happen here.
01:08:39A lot more to shake out.
01:08:40The man who's looking strong at the moment, though,
01:08:42is this guy, Ralf Schumacher.
01:08:44And I was mentioning before, Martin,
01:08:45he's one of the few drivers that went back to Europe.
01:08:47After, as we look at Mark Webber, who's gone off the track,
01:08:50Ralf Schumacher, one of the few drivers to go back to Europe.
01:08:52He's actually got a gym in his house, apparently,
01:08:54that he can turn the humidity controls and do anything he likes with it.
01:08:57And he recreated the conditions of this place,
01:08:59hot, humid, sticky, in his gym, on his rowing machine every day.
01:09:02And he wanted to go home and see his wife and kid.
01:09:04And that's understandable, isn't it?
01:09:06And they can also put the altitude change in as well
01:09:09if they want to.
01:09:10Most teams have pretty complex opportunities now
01:09:14to simulate race conditions.
01:09:16But I still can't help but think it's best to be out here
01:09:19and fevering away on the beach
01:09:22and jogging in these intense conditions.
01:09:25The track temperature is 42 centigrade.
01:09:27The air temperature, 33 centigrade.
01:09:29Humidity, 54 percent.
01:09:32They said there was a 50 percent chance of rain
01:09:34in the second half of the race.
01:09:36No sign of it yet out of our commentary box window.
01:09:39Pressure is dropping.
01:09:41Humidity has been rising slightly.
01:09:43But it doesn't look as if it's imminently going to rain at all.
01:09:48As you can see in the mouth, Schumacher,
01:09:50there's the battle between Massa and McNish still going strong.
01:09:53So what's the pit stop situation then?
01:09:55Well, Michael Schumacher, as we see,
01:09:57that's Heidfeld into the pits from sixth place.
01:10:00It's a longish stop.
01:10:02It's a very long stop by two-stop standards.
01:10:04About three seconds he's given away there.
01:10:06So that won't be very good news for him.
01:10:09He rejoins the track, though.
01:10:11Michael Schumacher stopped on lap 20.
01:10:13So we believe he'll probably have to stop again.
01:10:15Rubens Barrichello, he's been in twice.
01:10:18Lap 21 and lap 35.
01:10:20So that's him for the day.
01:10:22David Coulthard is out of the race.
01:10:23So is Kimi Räikkönen.
01:10:24Ralf Schumacher stopped on lap 31.
01:10:26That's him for the day as we ride on board.
01:10:28Nick Heidfeld, currently sixth.
01:10:31That's turn three.
01:10:32He'll bring it over to the left-hand side.
01:10:34Doing about 175.
01:10:35You can brake late.
01:10:36You've got the hill helps you slightly.
01:10:38You have to be very smooth through the entry.
01:10:41The exit opens up nicely.
01:10:42Take it to the right-hand side.
01:10:44Ready for those wonderful turns five and six.
01:10:48Just easing out of the throttle pedal, isn't he?
01:10:50You have to be super smooth through there
01:10:52with 800 horsepower under your right foot.
01:10:54And we move off board to watch him head into turn seven
01:10:57and cut away to what is Ralf Schumacher trying to lap.
01:11:02Felipe Massa, who is having a fight with Alan McNish
01:11:07for seventh place.
01:11:08And they've been having a fight for some time
01:11:10and he's been stuck behind them for some time,
01:11:12it's fair to say.
01:11:13Always a tricky moment in a motor race at the moment.
01:11:17Ralf Schumacher doesn't seem to be making much of an impression
01:11:20on the back of this battle.
01:11:21He's got a 23-second advantage over Barrichello, though,
01:11:24so he's reasonably comfortable at the moment.
01:11:26Well, he certainly can't take it.
01:11:28He doesn't need to take a risk
01:11:29through these back markers at all, does he?
01:11:31We're sure he's not coming in again.
01:11:33So Ralf really has this race sewn up,
01:11:37providing he doesn't trip over anybody
01:11:39and providing, of course, he doesn't make a mistake
01:11:41or have a mechanical problem.
01:11:43But otherwise, performance-wise, he's got it in the bag.
01:11:46Just 16 laps to go then in this Malaysian Grand Prix.
01:11:49Ralf Schumacher, 23 seconds ahead of Rubens Barrichello.
01:11:52Juan Montoya on target for another podium finish
01:11:55if he can stay where he is in third place.
01:11:58And he's just set the fastest middle sector time
01:12:01of the race so far.
01:12:02And the reason for that is because he's aware
01:12:04that Michael Schumacher is 18 seconds behind him
01:12:07and pushing very hard indeed.
01:12:08Montoya very keen to make it to Williams on the podium
01:12:11as Massa dives into the pit lane.
01:12:13I think the fight for the final podium position
01:12:16is between Montoya and Jenson Button.
01:12:18Button's on a one-stopper, which he's made already.
01:12:22Massa goes in the pits.
01:12:23That'll be good news for the race leader.
01:12:25He won't have to risk getting past the inexperienced
01:12:28young man who's very fast and was running in eighth place.
01:12:32But Montoya's got to push hard
01:12:35if he wants to clear Jenson Button.
01:12:37And Montoya, a new lap record then on a 1.38.049.
01:12:43Button is down in fifth.
01:12:45But we believe Montoya and Michael Schumacher
01:12:49will have to stop again.
01:12:52Yes, Montoya could come in any time in the next two or three laps.
01:12:55He made his first pit stop of the race on lap 21.
01:12:58Having had to drive through the pits for an incident
01:13:01which will be long debated after this race
01:13:03between himself and Michael Schumacher at the start.
01:13:06It was Montoya that was penalized for it.
01:13:08He had to drive through the pits, lost 20 seconds.
01:13:10While Michael Schumacher, who lost his nose cone,
01:13:13had to come in and have it replaced.
01:13:15But as you say, Martin, it's going to be a battle
01:13:17between Montoya and Button for that final podium position.
01:13:20And Montoya is going to need about 25 seconds in his pocket
01:13:24to make that stick.
01:13:25We wait to see the Williams mechanics now coming out
01:13:27onto the pit apron.
01:13:28What has Montoya got at the moment over Button?
01:13:30It's about 26 seconds.
01:13:32So it's going to be very, very touch and go,
01:13:34this stop for one Montoya.
01:13:36The Williams boys are going to have to be on their toes.
01:13:38They are indeed, but I think Montoya's got it.
01:13:40If he comes out even just a few seconds behind Jenson Button,
01:13:43I think he's got the faster car underneath him.
01:13:45And you have to assume with a good straight line speed as well,
01:13:48he's got a chance of nicking that position from Jenson,
01:13:52which would be a shame for the British fans.
01:13:54But I think it's, I fear it's imminent,
01:13:56providing this is a clean pit stop.
01:13:59And we can see as Montoya comes down,
01:14:01here he is behind Rubens Barrichello,
01:14:03currently in second place.
01:14:05That's an interesting one,
01:14:06because they're actually racing each other.
01:14:08That was how close he managed to get to him.
01:14:10But Montoya dives into the pit lane.
01:14:13And on this lap, he was very, very quick, his in-laps.
01:14:16So this is a very, very tidy performance by Montoya.
01:14:19Opens the visor to let some cool air onto his face.
01:14:22And let's see what the Williams boys can do.
01:14:27Keeps the revs very calm.
01:14:28He's not blipping the throttle, that helps.
01:14:30The tyres have gone on well.
01:14:32Plenty of fuel to go in.
01:14:33It's a reasonable, reasonable stop.
01:14:36Not bad.
01:14:37No problem at all, really.
01:14:39There is the Ferrari of Rubens Barrichello.
01:14:43And there is Jenson Button.
01:14:46Jenson Button holds on to third place.
01:14:48So it didn't work out for Montoya and Williams.
01:14:51And well, good old Button, eh?
01:14:53Yeah, as we thought, Button is a few seconds ahead.
01:14:56But we know just how fast Montoya has been.
01:14:59And now for the promised second stop for Michael Schumacher.
01:15:05Barrichello is off the road.
01:15:07Looks like an engine problem, doesn't it?
01:15:09Left bank again to Rubens Barrichello,
01:15:12one of the unluckiest men in Grand Prix racing.
01:15:16Stops, pulls out of second position.
01:15:19And the amazing thing is that's the second engine failure he's had this weekend.
01:15:23He had one on Friday, which cost him a lot of running.
01:15:25And you can see the smoke pouring out of the cylinders.
01:15:28And boom, like the old turbo days.
01:15:30Yeah, I think...
01:15:31It's launched itself completely.
01:15:32He's left the trail of fluid there.
01:15:34Very sensibly, just getting straight off the racing line and out of the way.
01:15:38There is a trail of fluid.
01:15:40I don't think it'll be a big problem.
01:15:42And head down, what have I got to do?
01:15:45It's just...
01:15:47I mean, he's right up there with Coulthard, isn't he?
01:15:49At the moment of, you know, how hard have you got to try?
01:15:51How many miles have you got to run?
01:15:53How many hills have you got to climb through the winter?
01:15:55How many thousands of kilometers have you got to do of testing
01:15:58to score a World Championship point?
01:16:01Like Coulthard, he'll be sitting at the bar tonight
01:16:03telling the barman his hard luck story, no doubt.
01:16:05Because it really has.
01:16:06The opening two races this season have been a hard luck story for both drivers.
01:16:10Ralf Schumacher, though, leading from Juan Montoya, second place.
01:16:14Oh, no, here comes Michael Schumacher.
01:16:16Button is now second, and Schumacher comes into the pits, Ted.
01:16:19Michael Schumacher then in for his second stop.
01:16:21He was only 17 seconds ahead of Jenson Button,
01:16:24so he's not going to hold that place.
01:16:26Some very bald-looking Bridgestone tyres come off.
01:16:29The fuel hose is still on.
01:16:30Now it's off.
01:16:31It's a clean stop, and he's away.
01:16:33A decent stop for Michael.
01:16:35He's, I think, effectively in fourth place in this race.
01:16:40Good news for the British drivers then,
01:16:42because Button then is up into second place.
01:16:45McNish will be up into sixth place in the Toyota
01:16:48after Barrichello dropped out of the race.
01:16:51So two Brits in the top six.
01:16:53Ralf Schumacher leads from Button and Montoya.
01:17:09Looking at race leader Ralf Schumacher.
01:17:19Last won a Grand Prix in Germany last year,
01:17:22as the Jordan gives him a nice wide berth.
01:17:24All the two stoppers coming out, you can see, from the pit lane now.
01:17:28That's one of the Toyotas.
01:17:29That's McNish, the only remaining Toyota.
01:17:32He's been in from sixth place.
01:17:34And, well, the question mark there is,
01:17:37can he remain ahead of Felipe Massa?
01:17:39Oh, there is the Toyota.
01:17:40That's interesting.
01:17:42I think the other one, quite clearly, was Salo then.
01:17:45Yes, Salo had just pitted, James.
01:17:48A long stop for McNish.
01:17:51The engine is still running,
01:17:53but they're obviously running hot or something.
01:17:55What is going on?
01:17:57Quite clearly, one Toyota coming in so close to the others.
01:18:00Wrong-footed them completely.
01:18:02And that's probably cost them a World Championship point.
01:18:06That's a tough break for Alan McNish.
01:18:08He was having a great scrap with Felipe Massa.
01:18:10I was completely wrong-footed there,
01:18:12because I saw Mikko Hasalo drive into his garage a few laps ago.
01:18:15Retired from the race, but he's back in it again.
01:18:17And down in 13th place.
01:18:19Yes, he's two laps behind,
01:18:21but quite clearly, whatever it was he drove in for,
01:18:23they fixed quite quickly.
01:18:24Very quickly.
01:18:25It's unusual for a driver to bolt into the garage without,
01:18:28you know, if he's not completely sure the car's finished.
01:18:37Ralf Schumacher's lead then over Jenson Button is 48.3 seconds.
01:18:43And here is the fight for second place.
01:18:46Just six-tenths of a second.
01:18:48Montoya is behind Button.
01:18:50We're heading for a Williams one-two here this afternoon.
01:18:53Well, I don't know about that. Jenson's a real fighter.
01:18:55Don't forget, he's got a Williams contract for next year.
01:18:58He's out to prove that one of the two Williams drivers
01:19:00should be moved aside,
01:19:02so that Sir Frank can take Button back.
01:19:05It's an awful lot to play for here.
01:19:07And not least, Honor.
01:19:27Twelve laps to go here at Sepang,
01:19:29and this is the battle for second place.
01:19:31Jenson Button in the Renault ahead of Juan Montoya
01:19:34in the Williams.
01:19:35Montoya looking to make it a Williams one-two at Sepang,
01:19:38and Louise Goodman can tell us
01:19:40while she's talking to Rubens Barrichello.
01:19:42I am indeed, Rubens.
01:19:43Yet again, it's not been your weekend, has it?
01:19:45It's very unfortunate.
01:19:47I mean, it was a hard work out there,
01:19:49and I was trying the best I could.
01:19:53It was...
01:19:54The tyres were helding up together,
01:19:57but at that pace it was very difficult
01:19:59to keep on going on Williams' pace.
01:20:02It's unfortunate to have to drop out.
01:20:05And Montoya then closing in.
01:20:07He's clearly got a much faster car under braking,
01:20:11and that is good news
01:20:12when you want to overtake somebody, isn't it?
01:20:14He's got good straight-line speed
01:20:15and good braking potential in that Williams.
01:20:17Button is not going to give in easily.
01:20:19Here's an interesting situation.
01:20:21The first three drivers in this race
01:20:23are all contracted to Williams.
01:20:25Button, of course, has a Williams contract.
01:20:28He's racing at Renault,
01:20:30was Benetton, under loan, if you like,
01:20:33and Ralf Schumacher leads.
01:20:35Jenson Button, 49 seconds behind in second place,
01:20:39and Montoya just a few metres behind that in third.
01:20:43Michael Schumacher's 20 seconds behind this pair
01:20:46in fourth place.
01:20:48Yes, Button's been being paid
01:20:50three quarters of a million dollars a year,
01:20:52is my understanding,
01:20:53not to drive for Williams for the last two seasons.
01:20:56He's been farmed out to the Benetton team.
01:20:58Now Renault.
01:20:59As you can see, he's made a slight mistake there,
01:21:01and Montoya has allowed himself to get much, much closer.
01:21:04We've got just 11 laps left here at Sepang,
01:21:07and Button has really got to hang on for all he's worth.
01:21:10If he can prove to Sir Frank Williams
01:21:12that he's the man that should slide into that team
01:21:14instead of either Montoya or Ralf Schumacher.
01:21:16Not an easy sell, that, really, is it?
01:21:18No, it's not.
01:21:19But he's keeping his head in this situation.
01:21:22With Ralf Schumacher and Montoya going so well,
01:21:25it's going to be tough for Jenson,
01:21:26but he may say,
01:21:27hey, who cares?
01:21:28Look, I've got a pretty good car,
01:21:29and look how close Montoya is.
01:21:30We know he's supersonic under braking,
01:21:32and well done, Jenson.
01:21:34He's given him a bit of space,
01:21:35but not too much.
01:21:36Hang on in on the apex,
01:21:37but brake a bit in the middle.
01:21:39Slow him down.
01:21:40Nicely done.
01:21:41Very nicely done.
01:21:42And put him out of rhythm,
01:21:44otherwise he'll nail you into turn four.
01:21:46It's such a small braking zone into four.
01:21:48It'll be a good man who can do it,
01:21:50but Montoya is a good man,
01:21:51and he has done it.
01:21:53Look at that.
01:21:54Very, very good driving from the pair of them.
01:21:56Yes, brilliant driving from both of them.
01:21:58It just shows you when you've got a corner
01:22:00that goes one way,
01:22:01giving into a corner going the other,
01:22:02you can go round the outside,
01:22:03you can try it on,
01:22:04and look at the joy.
01:22:05There's Caroline,
01:22:06who does the catering at the Williams team,
01:22:08and she's absolutely over the moon.
01:22:10They call him Monster, don't they,
01:22:12the Williams team?
01:22:13They call Juan Montoya the Monster.
01:22:15He certainly monstered Jenson Button there,
01:22:17and it'll be interesting to see
01:22:19if Button has any kind of reply.
01:22:21I should just point out to you
01:22:22that Alan McNish,
01:22:23who was running in sixth place,
01:22:25has had a very long pit stop.
01:22:27Some sort of problem with the tyres,
01:22:29we believe, from the Toyota team.
01:22:31The two cars came in very close together,
01:22:33the Salo and McNish,
01:22:34and it's now dropped him back behind Massa.
01:22:37Those two were having a great scrap,
01:22:38so as you can see on your screens there,
01:22:40McNish now out of the points for Toyota,
01:22:42but very much up on the podium
01:22:44are these two drivers,
01:22:46Juan Montoya and Jenson Button,
01:22:48and, well, Frank Williams and Patrick Head
01:22:50are going to be delighted about the way this...
01:22:52They've turned this around this weekend,
01:22:53because it was looking very, very Ferrari-oriented
01:22:56on qualifying day.
01:22:58Eventful race for Montoya.
01:22:59Remember, he tripped over Michael Schumacher
01:23:01in the first corner.
01:23:02Schumacher losing his wing,
01:23:04and the pair of them
01:23:05have made three stops this afternoon,
01:23:07both Montoya and Michael Schumacher.
01:23:09Montoya for a drive-through penalty
01:23:11and two scheduled stops.
01:23:13Michael Schumacher for a new nose
01:23:15and two scheduled stops now.
01:23:18Well, Montoya's really come back through the field,
01:23:20hasn't he?
01:23:21But he's still 51 seconds behind Ralph.
01:23:23You have to say,
01:23:24Ralph had the better strategy for the afternoon
01:23:27and kept his nose out of trouble.
01:23:29Yes, a big debate about whether to stop once
01:23:31or stop twice here at St Panc.
01:23:33Tyres are obviously a big issue,
01:23:35but Williams have got it very right today.
01:23:38And there are the boys who've carried it out.
01:23:40They can be very proud of themselves indeed.
01:23:42Very slick pit work.
01:23:44Good strategy, you have to say,
01:23:45devised by Sam Michael,
01:23:47who was hired at the beginning of last season
01:23:49by the Williams team from Jordan
01:23:51to oversee such things as race strategy,
01:23:54be in charge of all the engineering
01:23:56at the racetracks and at the test tracks.
01:23:58And he really has injected some nous
01:24:01and some street smarts into these Williams.
01:24:04The boys have been brilliant at engineering,
01:24:06but they weren't always so good at the strategy,
01:24:08and they've definitely got it right today.
01:24:09I wonder if Ferrari will be taking their new car
01:24:11to Brazil now.
01:24:12I think this will certainly have a big impact
01:24:15on their thought process.
01:24:17We're hearing that the new Ferrari
01:24:19is at least a second a lap faster
01:24:21than the current 2001 hybrid that they're using.
01:24:24And on this afternoon's performance,
01:24:26we're going to Brazil.
01:24:27It's hot there normally anyway.
01:24:29You'd have to say this may spring them
01:24:31into running it a bit earlier than anticipated.
01:24:35Well, Rubens Barrichello said before this race
01:24:37that it was going to come down 70% of the outcome,
01:24:40he reckoned, was going to be about tyres.
01:24:41Well, he probably didn't bargain
01:24:43for a Montoya Schumacher collision
01:24:45at the first corner,
01:24:46but even that put to one side.
01:24:48It really has been a good advert
01:24:49for Michelin tyres today.
01:24:50One and two and three, they're running.
01:24:53Michael Schumacher on the Bridgestones is fourth
01:24:55and really not able to make much of an impression
01:24:58on the top three.
01:24:59He's 71 seconds still behind his brother
01:25:02who leads this race.
01:25:03And that's more or less where he's been
01:25:05for the last 10 laps or so.
01:25:06I wish I'd taken a tenner with you, Martin,
01:25:08on him winning this race earlier
01:25:09when he took his nose off.
01:25:10But Heidfeld is fifth and Massa sixth.
01:25:13So solid drives from the two Sauber boys there,
01:25:16both using the Bridgestone tyres.
01:25:18Yes, Michael, you're seeing him now.
01:25:20Just didn't put on the pace we expected
01:25:22for the big chargeback.
01:25:23He's had a fairly lacklustre afternoon, actually,
01:25:26since that first corner incident.
01:25:27We don't know if the tracking is out
01:25:30on the front steering geometry or whatever.
01:25:33Or it does appear that, of course,
01:25:35that the Williams were just plain faster.
01:25:38But both Saubers then in fifth and sixth place.
01:25:41So they're in a point scoring situation.
01:25:43McNish outside of the top six
01:25:45after that long pit stop
01:25:46where they failed to find his right front wheel
01:25:49from what I can work out.
01:25:51And that's put him out of the World Championship points.
01:25:55And that's hard luck for McNish.
01:25:57To get a World Championship point
01:25:58in your second ever Grand Prix
01:26:00would be something very special.
01:26:02But unless somebody else has a mechanical failure
01:26:04in front of him, it's not going to happen.
01:26:08Salo actually rejoined the race.
01:26:10We saw him go in in the second Toyota.
01:26:12That's Salo joining the race yet again.
01:26:15Flapping in the low one minute 39 bracket.
01:26:41This is the 47th lap.
01:26:44Temperature.
01:26:45Well, it's 32 degrees in the shade.
01:26:47The track temperature is 39.
01:26:48I imagine the temperature inside those cockpits is pretty hot.
01:26:51Many of them don't have any kind of ventilation
01:26:54bringing air into the car.
01:26:56I know the Williams certainly doesn't.
01:26:57And it's very, very torrid conditions
01:27:00for them to be driving
01:27:01in the hottest and longest race of the year.
01:27:04And they're still driving at the same pace
01:27:06as they were in the early stages.
01:27:08Great testament to their fitness.
01:27:11The Jordans are running with shamrocks on them.
01:27:13It's St. Patrick's Day.
01:27:14But Eddie Jordan will be rueing the fact
01:27:17that Sato ran into the back of Fisichella
01:27:19because this is a day when he could have scored
01:27:21some World Championship points.
01:27:23No doubt about it.
01:27:24He certainly wouldn't have been in with a shout
01:27:26of a fifth or sixth,
01:27:27which they so badly need in the Jordan team.
01:27:30They seem to have a reasonable package.
01:27:33Both B.A.R. and Jordan moaning a bit
01:27:35about the lack of Honda power at this time.
01:27:37Whether that's true or not, we don't know.
01:27:39But certainly both teams pretty consistent on that.
01:27:41It's leaving the door open
01:27:42for both Renault and Sauber to come through.
01:27:45That's the battle, in fact,
01:27:46for fourth place in the championship.
01:27:48And at the moment, Renault looking pretty good
01:27:49with Button on a podium position.
01:27:51Never been on the podium, Jenson Button.
01:27:53And he's got just eight laps, nine laps remaining
01:27:56to see whether he can stay
01:27:58his best position ever,
01:27:59fourth at Hockenheim for Williams.
01:28:01We're riding on board with Nick Heidfeld
01:28:03who's done very well indeed today
01:28:05for Sauber, currently fifth.
01:28:08He had a podium last year at Brazil,
01:28:11but it's going to be a long way for him
01:28:13to get one here today.
01:28:16Heidfeld was the man that caused
01:28:18the secondary accident in Melbourne,
01:28:20if you watch it closely.
01:28:21He's the one that piled in,
01:28:22came off the grass and piled in.
01:28:25You're on board with him through turn 14,
01:28:27that long straight then.
01:28:29He needs to be on the right-hand side
01:28:31at the end of course for
01:28:33what is now becoming a nice grippy.
01:28:35He's getting the rubber laid down
01:28:36as the tyres are working overtime
01:28:38to slow these projectiles down
01:28:40from 190 down to about 70 miles an hour.
01:28:43Car's working well, isn't it?
01:28:44Over the hatch grid placings,
01:28:48bring it to the left
01:28:49and he'll break about 70 metres in race trim
01:28:52before that first corner.
01:28:55Michael Schumacher was saying
01:28:56in a press conference on Thursday
01:28:57that when it's really hot here
01:28:58he likes to drive in the shadows.
01:28:59Anything just to make it a little bit cooler
01:29:01in the cockpit.
01:29:02We've got just eight laps to go here
01:29:04at Sepang.
01:29:05Ralf Schumacher leads from Juan Montoya.
01:29:07Buttens is third.
01:29:09Michael Schumacher is fourth.
01:29:11Fifth is Heidfeld
01:29:12and sixth still is Felipe Massa.
01:29:32Still on board again then
01:29:33with Nick Heidfeld.
01:29:34A lot of supporters for this team.
01:29:38Sponsored by the local oil company
01:29:40which won a lot of Malaysian money
01:29:42into Formula 1
01:29:43the Salva team have
01:29:44over the last few years
01:29:45and Malaysia's got plenty to shout about really.
01:29:48They've got a driver in the field,
01:29:49they've got sponsors,
01:29:50big multinational companies based here
01:29:52in Malaysia competing
01:29:54at the top level of Formula 1.
01:29:56It says an awful lot I think for this country
01:29:57that it's managed to get itself involved really
01:30:00in the world's most technologically advanced
01:30:02lucrative sport.
01:30:04And put this much money into
01:30:06this wonderful facility.
01:30:07So yeah, I know that about it.
01:30:08It's good to have them in Formula 1.
01:30:10Ferrari mechanics,
01:30:12no more scheduled work to do for the afternoon
01:30:15until the chequered flag
01:30:16then they've got to pack everything away
01:30:17and get it ready to go off to Brazil.
01:30:19But nothing to do they hope
01:30:21between now and that flag falling.
01:30:24Massa, sixth place.
01:30:26He's 55 seconds behind
01:30:29teammate Heidfeld
01:30:31but no threat from behind.
01:30:3322 seconds behind him is
01:30:35Alan McNish, seventh place man.
01:30:3726 seconds behind him is
01:30:39Villeneuve in eighth.
01:30:42Sato's ninth
01:30:44in the Jordan de la Rosa
01:30:46in the Jaguar, tenth.
01:30:48Frentzen in the Arab Swim
01:30:49have a long pit stop early in the day.
01:30:51Eleventh.
01:30:52Salo been in four times.
01:30:54Traction control problems apparently
01:30:56in twelfth.
01:30:57Fisichella trundling around at the back
01:30:59in unlucky for some, thirteen.
01:31:02Williams then
01:31:04lapping Felipe Massa.
01:31:10He goes through 190 miles an hour
01:31:13down to turn fifteen.
01:31:15The scene of a lot of action
01:31:16and overtaking this afternoon.
01:31:30Seven laps to go of the Malaysian Grand Prix of 2002.
01:31:33You're looking at Ralf Schumacher
01:31:35who's hoping to win his fourth Grand Prix
01:31:37of his reasonably long career.
01:31:39He's 51 seconds ahead of his teammate,
01:31:41Juan Montoya.
01:31:43And Jenson Button is heading for his
01:31:45first podium finish.
01:31:46And ready to go.
01:31:48And ready to go.
01:31:49And ready to go.
01:31:50And ready to go.
01:31:51And ready to go.
01:31:52And ready to go.
01:31:53And ready to go.
01:31:54And ready to go.
01:31:55And ready to go.
01:31:56And ready to go.
01:31:57Get his first podium finish.
01:31:58And Renauld's first.
01:31:59In, well, four years, in fact.
01:32:02Five years for Renault.
01:32:04In third place.
01:32:05Michael Schumacher down in fourth.
01:32:08And it is not the race order that we had expected certainly
01:32:10after qualifying.
01:32:12From the start.
01:32:13Michael Schumacher and Juan Montoya
01:32:14got tangled in the first corner.
01:32:16Schumacher lost his front wing.
01:32:18Montoya was a judge to have caused the incident.
01:32:20Was given a drive through the pits penalty.
01:32:23Michael Schumacher
01:32:24dropped down to nineteenth place.
01:32:26the race settled into a pattern then but it was clear that the
01:32:29Ralf Schumacher was running a lot of fuel and inevitably
01:32:33Barrichello pitted early from the lead. Schumacher took over,
01:32:37Peeta easily have the pace and the one stoppers yet again
01:32:41for example Button who's currently in third it's paid off for them. We saw
01:32:45Trulli drop out with technical problems early on. Panis stopped on the track.
01:32:49Coulthard recovered to the pit but with a power
01:32:52loss and Bernoldi off the racetrack. Raikkonen
01:32:56with an apparent blown engine. Alex Jung stopped in the first sector.
01:33:01Irvine tripped over the back of Alex Jung
01:33:05and probably that's why Jung stopped. Lost his front nose
01:33:09and did some other damage. Weber stopped out
01:33:12in the gravel. Barrichello then the other retiree
01:33:16with a failed engine. His second of the weekend in the Ferrari.
01:33:20Lots of action. McNish was sick. Lost time with a very long pit stop where
01:33:26they couldn't find his right front wheel. Button has put in a
01:33:30great performance here and a well-deserved third place. We saw
01:33:34an exciting battle between him and Montoya.
01:33:37Montoya had the car and the confidence to nail him and take over
01:33:41then second place. Yes this will be a great Philip
01:33:45indeed for Jenson Button. He had a terrible time with the Benetton team
01:33:49last year after making such an explosive debut with
01:33:52Williams. The year before he was farmed out to
01:33:55Benetton and really struggled to match the pace of his teammate Giancarlo
01:33:59Fisichella. But this year now the team's become
01:34:03Renault and he is teammates to Jarno Trulli
01:34:08and certainly he's got the upper hand over Trulli this weekend.
01:34:13Trulli was unlucky not to go too far in this race. Retired
01:34:18very early on but Jenson Button has put his marker down. He's back no doubt
01:34:25about that and so are Williams BMW. One and two at
01:34:29the moment with just three laps to go. Yes
01:34:33Button hanging around just 5.3 seconds behind this man and if Button gets on
01:34:37the podium as Renault. The last time Renault in
01:34:40their own right were on the podium was in
01:34:43San Marino back in 1985. Some 17 years ago
01:34:47with Patrick Tambay. So I think they'll be pretty delighted as well. But
01:34:50Michelin then are the first three runners this afternoon. So as predicted
01:34:55by many people prior to this race the hot conditions
01:34:59really do suit their tires. Certainly seems to be the case.
01:35:02Alan McNish just struggling to get his car into the corner there. He must be
01:35:07rewing that pit stop foul up. You have to
01:35:11expect it I suppose with a new team. Toyota still
01:35:14finding their way in Formula One. Still getting together and gelling as a team
01:35:17and it really was a mix-up that meant they didn't have enough
01:35:20tires for him. I mean it can happen to the most
01:35:23experienced team. It happened to Ferrari didn't it? Several times we remember Eddie
01:35:26Irvine at a crucial race at the Nürburgring a few years ago
01:35:29unable to get enough wheels on his wagon. I think what threw the spanner in the
01:35:33works was one of Salo's four stops this afternoon was
01:35:36just prior to McNish arriving in the zone
01:35:39and quite clearly they hadn't got his tires ready. You've got to hope
01:35:44that Salo doesn't have McNish's tires on because that's illegal.
01:35:47Anyway they'll get thrown out for that. But Salo not in a point scoring position
01:35:50in any event. But hopefully the wheel they did eventually find for the front
01:35:53of Alan's car was one of his batch, one of his
01:35:56allocation for the weekend. Just looking at who else
01:36:01is still running. You can see Jacques Villeneuve. He'll give
01:36:04the BAR boys something to smile about. He's still on the track.
01:36:08They haven't got much speed but at least they have some reliability from
01:36:11the looks of things. In eighth place Takuma Sato. Well there'll
01:36:15be a serious debrief back at Jordan's headquarters at
01:36:17Silverstone after this race. Takuma Sato the new boy in the team
01:36:22crashed into the back of his teammate Giancarlo Fisichella
01:36:25early on and with the pace that Fisichella has shown throughout this
01:36:28weekend it really is easy to imagine that he
01:36:31would have got some points today. Perhaps one or even two points to open
01:36:34Jordan's account for the 2002 season. De La Rosa still
01:36:39going as well in 10th for Jaguar and they're going to be analyzing after
01:36:43this in an important test next week in Spain.
01:36:46Whether or not to bring last year's Jaguar out to Brazil
01:36:49or even Imola because they suspect it might be faster
01:36:53than the car they're racing here this weekend. Heinz-Harald Frentzen still going
01:36:56in the arrows in 11th. Mikasalo is down in 12th place in the
01:36:59Toyota and there is the Williams mechanics.
01:37:03They've been here many many times before. Williams have won
01:37:06a lot of Grands Prix, well over 100 Grands Prix
01:37:09but haven't yet found the winning habit for a few years. Four victories
01:37:16last season. Is this going to be the first of the 2002 season
01:37:21and how many more to come and what does he do for the championship? Well it
01:37:24blows it wide open doesn't it? Michael Schumacher
01:37:27will pick up three points today if he carries on in fourth place. He'll still
01:37:30lead the championship with 13 but Ralph Schumacher
01:37:33will be right there with 10 points in third place
01:37:38and just ahead of him will be Juan Montoya with two second places so far.
01:37:41So it'll be Michael 13, Juan 12 and Ralph 10. It's a bit like the
01:37:47Premiership. It's very tight, very very tight at the top. Williams have
01:37:52won 108 Grand Prix. They used to be neck and
01:37:55neck for a while with Ferrari McLaren but they had
01:37:58a bit of a dull period didn't they? Ferrari won 145 Grand Prix, McLaren 134,
01:38:04Williams to date 108 but it very much looks like it's going to become 109
01:38:09for the Williams team and this of course will be Ralph Schumacher's
01:38:13fourth Grand Prix victory providing he can finish the next three laps.
01:38:20Lovely overhead shot there of this Williams BMW
01:38:23and BMW have done fantastically well since coming in
01:38:26to Grand Prix racing at the start of the 2000 season.
01:38:30Widely considered to have the most powerful engine in Formula One
01:38:33and it certainly hustled this car along very nicely throughout the weekend
01:38:38and credit also to the engineers because they've had to find speed from this car.
01:38:41It was not a match for the Ferrari in the early running of the weekend
01:38:45and by the time qualifying came around both Ralph Schumacher
01:38:49and Juan Montoya had found a lot from it.
01:38:53So clocking down the laps now two more to go Martin and I have to ask you this
01:38:57is not going to be an easy one this year this race the driver of the
01:39:00day we've had fantastic performances obviously
01:39:03from Ralph Schumacher leading the race been very strong throughout
01:39:06helped by his team. Juan Montoya has done very well after his early
01:39:10incidents to get himself up into second place and Jenson Button
01:39:13his first podium in a Renault racing against much stronger teams but
01:39:18who would you tip? You're right it's a very close call between the three
01:39:21men who currently look like they're going to be standing on the podium.
01:39:24You've got to go for Ralph I think he would have won this race anyway
01:39:27regardless of Montoya's problems because he's 47 seconds ahead Montoya did not
01:39:32lose 47 seconds in my view. Ralph I think had the right strategy
01:39:37drove sensibly kept it on the road kept out of trouble
01:39:41and he would have to be my driver of the day. Jenson Button's done a fabulous job
01:39:45but I think you'd really have to say Ralph's been supreme.
01:39:48I wouldn't argue with that Martin Brunel's driver delay then Ralph Schumacher
01:39:53and no doubt we'll see plenty more of those as the season goes on just looking
01:39:57at the notes here from this race 34 seconds
01:39:59in fact was how much time Juan Montoya lost as a result of that
01:40:02incident so he's 45 seconds behind Ralph so you're absolutely right
01:40:07it probably would have been Ralph's day but you never know how unsettling
01:40:09something like that could be for a driver I guess.
01:40:11It's true and plus of course he then has to come through the traffic
01:40:14but I still think Ralph had the best strategy of the afternoon of the
01:40:18two Williams drivers and you know at the end of the day he
01:40:22didn't trip over anybody in the first corner
01:40:25that's that's the long and the short of it you can if only all day long
01:40:28but Montoya ended up for whatever reason getting a penalty
01:40:34there he is though just heading into the very closing stages of this race one
01:40:39Montoya not been on terms with his teammate
01:40:42Ralph Schumacher here but he's still slightly ahead of him in
01:40:45the championship it's going to be Ralph's fourth Grand
01:40:49Prix victory his 15th visit to the Formula One podium
01:40:53in his career we're on the final lap now this has
01:40:58been an emotional day for the Williams team for sure
01:41:01absolutely and they'll need to cut to the other Williams anytime soon
01:41:05because he's going to be winning the race so we're watching second place man
01:41:09here Montoya Ralph has started his final
01:41:13tour Montoya about to do the same so that's
01:41:17the distance there behind Montoya crosses the line
01:41:20Ralph of course is some 43 seconds further around this final tour
01:41:26both the Sauber's going to score points today then three points for the Sauber
01:41:29team as they aim to try and keep themselves
01:41:32fourth in the championship Jenson Button is going to score four
01:41:35very valuable points for himself and for the Renault team
01:41:39with his podium finishing third place we're waiting to see Ralph Schumacher
01:41:43hopefully we pick him up nice aerial shot there
01:41:46of the Williams BMW here's a scrap I hadn't seen Buttons had a very slow lap
01:41:51but Michael Schumacher just 1.3 seconds behind him
01:41:55so Michael Schumacher may just be about to snatch
01:41:59that podium position away from Jenson Button there's Ralph then
01:42:03heading towards the final corner of the final
01:42:07lap and we think Michael Schumacher has passed
01:42:10an ailing Jenson Button and will jump on the podium is he the luckiest man or
01:42:16what Ralph Schumacher though wins the Malaysian
01:42:19Grand Prix a fantastic victory for Williams for BMW and for Ralph
01:42:23Schumacher his fourth career win his first of the
01:42:272002 season he's going to lead home his teammate one Montoya in second place
01:42:32but Jenson Button is in trouble he's in big trouble he's about to be
01:42:36passed for fourth place by Nick Heidfeld what a heartbreak for the
01:42:39Englishman we're still looking at Ralph Schumacher
01:42:42but Michael Schumacher has passed Button and now the salvo of Nick Heidfeld
01:42:46is looks I believe I'm told he's being going fast as well it's uh
01:42:50we're not seeing it I'm afraid but Jenson Button in the course of this final
01:42:54lap has gone from a podium place in third as Montoya
01:42:57crosses the line one Montoya makes it a Williams one two
01:43:01and a very emotional day indeed for the Williams BMW team they are definitely
01:43:06in the running for this championship but we believe that Schumacher is going
01:43:10to nick the best button now and there is the salvo you can see and
01:43:13that's the salvo of Massa so in fact Button is going to finish in sixth place
01:43:17what heartbreak for him and for Renault oh my goodness
01:43:21and where's McNeish in the Toyota is he anywhere near to be able to
01:43:25threaten Button no he's not so Button goes Massa was a lap behind so
01:43:31Button goes over fourth Heidfeld did not pass him
01:43:35Massa was in being lapped so Button cruises just over the line Michael
01:43:40Schumacher then stands on the podium his 99th career
01:43:45podium Michael Schumacher so one more and he hits the ton I'm sorry I
01:43:48didn't see the computer reading saying that
01:43:51Button was going to be fourth I realized that the two salvos were a lap down but
01:43:55that's the move that is where Michael Schumacher put the
01:43:57move on Jenson Button that nicked that podium place
01:44:01and well Button as you say managed to stay in front of the two
01:44:04salvos because they were in fact a lap down wonder if he was short of fuel
01:44:08they do cut it very fine you wonder if he was a bit short of fuel on that last
01:44:12lap maybe had a technical problem obviously
01:44:14had nothing to fight with had no tools to fight Michael Schumacher with
01:44:18he lost nine seconds on the last lap Jenson Button
01:44:22and five seconds the lap before that so what a disaster still no podium for
01:44:28Jenson Button all that effort all that hard work in
01:44:32these incredible temperatures but a very very happy little area VIP
01:44:38sponsor area there above the Williams garage there's the crowd
01:44:42and Ted Kravitz has got Patrick Head the technical director of the Williams team
01:44:46who must be a very happy man today Patrick well done James says you must be
01:44:50a very happy man I think that's an understatement
01:44:52yeah very pleased I mean the team's done a fantastic job over the winter working
01:44:56very hard the whole team at the circuit and back of base
01:45:00and the drivers BMW Michelin they've all worked bloody hard so
01:45:04but we've got a long season ahead anyway do you think Juan's
01:45:07penalty was fair I think we'll be having a talk about that
01:45:14with people behind the scenes but I think it
01:45:17was a bit hard when you compare it with some other similar occasions yeah
01:45:21but a great winter for Ralph all credit to him it was a great strategy and he
01:45:25made it pay he was just very quick and he was so
01:45:29quick we said well one stop strategy is what he
01:45:32can do and and he was very fast yeah well done Patrick
01:45:38well done indeed Patrick as Ralph Schumacher takes the plaudits of the
01:45:42team you saw Vili Weber there with the beard the silver bearded man that's the
01:45:45manager of both Ralph and Michael Schumacher Mr.
01:45:4920% they call him and well he's got a fair chance of being
01:45:53the manager of the world champion this year hasn't he
01:45:56there's the non-classified runners there's poor old Jenson Button coming in
01:45:59and one Montoya in second place look at
01:46:01those tires there isn't much grip left on the front of those tires is there
01:46:05that's a complete slick no grooves in that one at all they'll
01:46:09there'll be a bit of controversy about that I wouldn't be at all surprised
01:46:13and that man now second in the world championship with 12
01:46:17points there's the point situation Michael Schumacher leads
01:46:20the world championship with 14 Montoya 12 Ralph Schumacher 10
01:46:24and Louise is in the pits yeah I'm stood here with with Pat Simmons and Pat
01:46:29my heart goes out to you fell off that podium on the last lap really didn't you
01:46:32what went wrong well a couple of laps before the end
01:46:36Jenson started experiencing a problem we can see on telemetry that the roll
01:46:42stiffness distribution has gone to a place where it shouldn't be
01:46:47moment I'd suspect maybe a broken anti-roll bar something like that but
01:46:51very very disappointing after such a good race I was going to say I mean
01:46:55you must be absolutely gutted you've still despite the fact that you've still
01:46:58got points from that race yeah sure I mean you know it's great to
01:47:02get on the podium you feel you've done a good job then and to lose it so late
01:47:08it's yeah it's stalling bad luck to you all
01:47:11Pat Simmons the engineering director of the Renault team explaining that he
01:47:15thinks there was some kind of suspension failure that made Jenson's
01:47:19car very very difficult the roll center he's talking about is the distribution
01:47:22of the weight particularly as it's going around corners
01:47:25so that appears to be uh I'm surprised he lost that much speed
01:47:29I have to say with with a roll bar breaking
01:47:31Jenson but normally you wouldn't lose quite that much speed they may find
01:47:34something else when they pull it apart well we've seen a chink in Ferrari's
01:47:39reliability armor today haven't we Rubens Barrichello had an
01:47:44engine failure and dropped out of the race
01:47:50but nevertheless Ferrari have now gone 37 straight races
01:47:55getting a car onto the podium and that is a really tremendous
01:47:58situation isn't it just looking now at a melt of pictures of the race
01:48:03Martin tell me what do you think this says the pendulum's very much swung now
01:48:07in for in in Australia it was all about Ferrari here it's been all about
01:48:11Williams BMW you're just seeing a replay there of that first corner
01:48:14incident and it's so difficult from that shot to understand
01:48:18what Montoya did wrong I really and I understand what Patrick Head is saying
01:48:22to us that uh there'll be a bit of an inquest on
01:48:24that of course the penalty's already been paid
01:48:26they got the drive through the pits at 120 kilometers per hour it's a long
01:48:30long pit lane here something approaching 400 meters
01:48:34but uh Williams now lead the world championship
01:48:3722 points to Ferrari's 14 points the pendulum has swung in their favor
01:48:42and of course they've they've been developing their new car as well that's
01:48:45important Ferrari now I think will be forced to
01:48:49rush their new car out probably for Brazil
01:48:52after the performance today podium procedure is very much being
01:48:56readied and I wonder if we're going to hear any more
01:48:59about those front Michelins that appear to have no
01:49:03grooves the regulations say they must start with grooves must have grooves
01:49:07when they're new there's no system at this time for
01:49:10measuring them at the end of a grand prix or when they're taken off
01:49:13through the pit stop would be very difficult to measure them after a pit
01:49:17stop and uh we're into the anthems

01:52:13and to the third place driver mikhail shumaka the trophy presented by
01:52:18the chairman of the automobile association of malaysia
01:52:21hh tunku muzaffar well done gentlemen
01:52:28and now
01:52:48so
01:52:58ralph that was an absolutely masterful race once
01:53:01it was established that rubens was on a two-stop strategy you seem to put
01:53:04not one foot wrong almost the perfect race for you
01:53:07that was a perfect race but i must i mean the team did a fantastic job the
01:53:11car was just there it was perfect the whole race um
01:53:16especially in the second stint where even more rubber was on the circuit it
01:53:19was just an easy game and i'm amazed how quick the car was
01:53:23today i can't still believe it to be honest i mean it's
01:53:26all down to the team i must say a very hot race today
01:53:30for all of you looking at your tires when they came in lots of tires were
01:53:33coming in almost slick did that really put the
01:53:36handling off and did it in fact concern you that maybe they were wearing even
01:53:39more than you expected oh we were worried about tire wear
01:53:43before the beginning of this weekend and we had a very high tire wear and
01:53:46towards the end of a stint i always got a bit off but it was never a
01:53:50problem because this car was so well balanced it did take it
01:53:54thank you very well done today ralph juan pablo you had much more incident
01:53:58in the race than you wanted starting at the first corner talk us through that
01:54:02and also what were you waving to michael afterwards as you were coming back
01:54:04around to both make your first pit stops
01:54:07well i'll be honest when we had this tire came around the outside of michael
01:54:11because he moved to the right and you know we got to the corner i
01:54:15gave him enough room you know i talked to him already said
01:54:17he had a bit of understeer and he touched me and that was it you
01:54:20know for me it was a racing scene i think for him was the same
01:54:24and i was a bit pissed off because i saw he understeer often to me
01:54:27so that's why i went like that to him but that was it you know
01:54:30it was it was a bit frustrating because the car was very good at the fastest
01:54:34lap of the race and i think the strategy i was in it
01:54:38worked from where i was obviously you were called in for a
01:54:41the first driver to receive a drive-through penalty than rather than
01:54:44the stop go do you think that was really unfair you
01:54:47did end up at the end of the day with more points than michael but what did
01:54:50you think about the drive-through but i think it was very unfair because
01:54:54you know i gave him room he understood a bit off he touched me that was it you
01:54:57know
01:54:59i can you know it's racing incidents that you know i think after what happened
01:55:03in the first way they went a bit extreme and i had to pay for it you know
01:55:06i think the stewards didn't want to go everybody saying oh they should have
01:55:09done something they didn't i think thank you juan pablo michael could
01:55:15you describe how how you saw the first corner incident did
01:55:18you simply understeer into juan pablo or did he not leave you
01:55:21enough space you can see it from two ways i mean
01:55:25obviously if he would have opened more we wouldn't have touched but
01:55:28he wasn't willing to do this so there wasn't any any room for me so we touched
01:55:33i mean i didn't see a drama in that it was a shame
01:55:36that i lost my front wing and had to come in for a pit stop i lost a
01:55:41lot of time obviously for for that lap plus the pit stop but anyway it was an
01:55:45exciting race in the end
01:55:50do you think the penalty that one pablo got was fair you also ended up coming
01:55:53through the field doing a lot of overtaking but do you think maybe he was
01:55:56dealt with quite harshly today um i honestly
01:56:02to be honest yes because i wouldn't i would think we have seen
01:56:07situations far more extreme where nothing has happened and today
01:56:10a little touch uh something was was done
01:56:15we we don't seem to have a very consistent situation
01:56:19that's something we maybe all together want to improve in future
01:56:23michael thank you ralph back to you hot conditions here the next race is in
01:56:27brazil also likely to be hot how confident are
01:56:30well i mean we should have all the confidence last year
01:56:33we were stronger than ferrari there i mean
01:56:36it was very bad luck that we rather i mean hon was on winning the race before
01:56:41someone crashed into him so i think we can be very confident to be on the
01:56:44podium again and to give michael and rubens a hard time now
01:56:48we'll see thank you very much and now in your own languages starting with ralph
01:56:52please
