00:00:00We're approaching the halfway stage in F1 2001, the Canadian Grand Prix has a lovely habit of producing great dollops of drama.
00:00:09Enjoy the race now in the company of Martin Brundle and Murray Walker.
00:00:13And what a fabulous, fabulous sight that is, an absolutely unique Grand Prix location.
00:00:19The ÃŽle Notre-Dame here in the St. Lawrence Seaway and the great hero of Canada, Gilles Villeneuve,
00:00:26whose son, Jacques, is starting here from 9th position on the grid.
00:00:31Well, this weekend so far has been dominated by a lot of nasty politics and a lot of unpleasant words between some of the drivers,
00:00:40but now it's the race and here are some points to establish.
00:00:43This circuit is a car breaker. If you can go the distance here, you're doing well.
00:00:49Brakes take a terrible hammering.
00:00:51Tyres, well, Ralf Schumacher there, second on the grid, is on the harder compound of Michelin.
00:00:57He thinks that's an advantage.
00:00:59Michael Schumacher, his brother alongside him in pole position, is on the softer Bridgestones.
00:01:04We'll see David Coulthard there in third position on the road.
00:01:08This is a circuit where you can overtake, but let's hope there's not too much of that at the first corner here,
00:01:16because that's the one where there is so often trouble.
00:01:19Tremendously close here this morning in the final half hour of the warm-up.
00:01:24There was just over one-tenth of a second, listen to this, just over one-tenth of a second covering the top six.
00:01:32Incredible.
00:01:33Jordan going well.
00:01:35Riccardo Zonta returning to Grand Prix racing with Heinz-Harald Frentzen out after his crash at Monaco, third fastest this morning.
00:01:44The McLarens, second and fifth.
00:01:46The Ferraris, sixth and eighth.
00:01:48Does that mean they're on a two-stop strategy?
00:01:50We know that Eddie Irvine, fifteenth on the grid there in the Jaguar on the softer compound Michelins,
00:01:55is on a one-stop strategy, so we can expect to see him sprint through the field.
00:02:01The opening lap or two is going to be sensational.
00:02:03Well, of course, we've seen many accidents here going into that first corner,
00:02:07and it's just fast enough to build up serious head of speed, as we've said,
00:02:12and then all hell breaks loose as they all point at the same piece of tarmac.
00:02:17I think it's a better-than-evens chance Ralf Schumacher will be into the first corner first,
00:02:20watching their practice launch control.
00:02:23We saw them back in Austria, both Williams absolutely flying off the grid.
00:02:28But Michael seemed better this morning.
00:02:30Coulthard also getting some good launch control starts in, so even Stevens,
00:02:35but I think Ralf may just have the edge down to that first corner.
00:02:38He's on the Michelins, of course, the harder Michelin,
00:02:41and there is a story in the paddock that they tend to fade away a little bit for a few laps.
00:02:46We've heard that before, but when we've seen that Williams out front, it tends to march on.
00:02:52For sure, the Bridgestones are blistering, but the drivers are not aware of it
00:02:56until they come in the pits.
00:02:57They're not losing time on it, but can they do a full one-stopper
00:03:02late into the 40-odd laps into this race and get away with blistering rear tyres?
00:03:08Little heat bubbles in the rubber, it bursts open.
00:03:11Normally you feel a vibration, you lose grip, but the drivers have not been feeling that.
00:03:16But this also, Murray, is about brakes.
00:03:19It's a very heavy braking circuit.
00:03:21Some new braking systems out there, even this weekend on the grid,
00:03:26and I think brakes are going to play a key part in the later stages of this race.
00:03:29I notice that two or three of the teams, Sauber and Jordan amongst them,
00:03:34are copying this magic braking system that Ferrari have had on the front of the cars since the season began.
00:03:40And they're certainly going to need it here, as you rightly say,
00:03:43because the brakes take an enormous hammering.
00:03:45I remember Heinz-Harald Frensum a couple of years ago, very well-paced in the race,
00:03:49went out in the closing stages when he went into, guess what?
00:03:52Yes, the wall that you have seen so many of them crash into.
00:03:57We saw Trulli's tyre blankets coming off.
00:03:59He's electing to start the race on scrub tyres.
00:04:02Brand new rears then, look, for Barrichello, and rather tatty-looking fronts.
00:04:07And it'll take a couple of laps for the rolled-up rubber on the top of Barrichello's front tyres to come off.
00:04:14And that was the dark horse of the race, I think.
00:04:16Panis in the BAR, and straight then on to Räikkönen.
00:04:19Häkkinen, Räikkönen, the young Finn, out-qualifying the double world champion,
00:04:24Mikko Häkkinen, fellow countryman, and they're in seventh and eighth position.
00:04:29Perfect organisation and timing.
00:04:31There is eight seconds to go, and then you will see them get away on the formation lap
00:04:37around this 2.7 mile circuit.
00:04:40That's it, one o'clock local time.
00:04:43Away they go, and you'll see this magnificent circuit.
00:04:47You've heard Martin, and here he is again.
00:04:49Sorry, two BARs, very slow away there.
00:04:51Panis, one of them, will they be able to stay in the pack?
00:04:55I think they have, just done.
00:04:57So the BARs, slow to get away, but they've stayed within the pack, Mary,
00:05:01so they can rejoin their original grid position.
00:05:04Yeah, and let's not forget that McLarens have had launch control problems in the past.
00:05:11Not once, not twice, three times.
00:05:13They said for the last race at Monaco, they didn't expect a problem.
00:05:17They'd had a thousand starts.
00:05:19Didn't help David Coulthard very much.
00:05:21He's confident here, though.
00:05:23And Jarno Trulli there in fourth position in the Jordan Honda.
00:05:27Four different constructors on the two front rows of the grid.
00:05:32Ferrari, Williams, McLaren, and Honda.
00:05:35It could be an extremely open race.
00:05:38But I say again, to finish here is very good indeed.
00:05:42It's hot, it's not all that hot.
00:05:44So the track temperature is 33 degrees.
00:05:47The air temperature is 24 degrees.
00:05:49I would say just about ideal circumstances for racing.
00:05:53But it's a very tough, unforgiving circuit.
00:05:56The Arco is further away than it is at Monaco, but it's still mighty close.
00:06:00It's like driving through a vast steel tube.
00:06:03They've got to watch those concrete curbs at the end of the lap.
00:06:07There are other ones of those around the track, but they're not really in play.
00:06:11Those two final bends are very much in play with the nasty curbs.
00:06:15And we've seen Hakkinen rip the floor out of his car twice during the weekend.
00:06:20And, of course, over and above all of the other accidents we've shown you earlier in the program.
00:06:25They fly through the air into the wall.
00:06:27So they'll be giving quite a lot of respect to that final chicane in the first two or three laps
00:06:32until they find their breaking point.
00:06:34They'll all be carrying a lot of fuel, especially, of course, the one-stoppers.
00:06:38And they'll need to be sure they start edging into those breaking zones
00:06:42instead of total commitment on lap one.
00:06:45Yeah, that's the one thing we don't know about these strategies.
00:06:49The one-stopper should be from a lap 34 onwards, but we will just have to wait and see.
00:06:54And I'm sure James Allen will have some information on that later on.
00:06:57Ralf Schumacher, second on the grid.
00:06:59Micka Hakkinen, eighth on the grid.
00:07:01He's got a lot of work to do.
00:07:03Just saw Coulthard throw something out of his cockpit.
00:07:05They're still forming up at the back, still warming up their tyres at the back,
00:07:08which they shouldn't really be doing.
00:07:10Practice starts are not allowed on the green flag lap.
00:07:14But finally, then, the back of the grid forming up, Murray.
00:07:18Craig Pollock, intent, looking at his two drivers.
00:07:22Olivier Panis is sixth on the grid.
00:07:24Jacques Villeneuve is ninth on the grid.
00:07:26It is a 69-lap race.
00:07:29They are all ready to go.
00:07:30They've been a very long time held on the front row of the grid.
00:07:34Now, the lights.
00:07:35When all five go out, the Canadian Grand Prix will be...
00:07:41Go, go, go, go!
00:07:44Michael Schumacher gets away while his brother gets away.
00:07:46Ralf is...
00:07:47Michael Schumacher on the inside of the left.
00:07:50Ralf tucks in behind him.
00:07:51Now, are they all going to get around?
00:07:53It looks to me as though we're okay so far.
00:07:55Yes, it's a good start for the Canadian Grand Prix.
00:07:58Great news!
00:07:59And in the lead, the scarlet Ferrari of pole position holder Michael Schumacher
00:08:05with his brother Ralf in second place.
00:08:07Look at the way that Schumacher, Michael, is already starting to pull away.
00:08:12And David Coulthard still in third position where he started,
00:08:16followed by Trulli, followed by Barrichello.
00:08:18Crucial, then, for Michael Schumacher.
00:08:20Ralf made up the four or so meters he was behind
00:08:24but could not go around the outside.
00:08:26And that is crucial.
00:08:27Michael can get away.
00:08:29We think Ralf's qualifying performance was exceptional.
00:08:32Probably put his car higher up the grid than it should have been.
00:08:35And it's Coulthard now that faces the problem of Ralf Schumacher in the early stages.
00:08:40But Barrichello has gone ahead of Trulli.
00:08:44Rubens Barrichello in the Ferrari who started fifth on the grid
00:08:47has passed the yellow Jordan Honda of Jarno Trulli.
00:08:50And Trulli has now got Olivier Panis tucked up underneath his rear wing.
00:08:55Lap one of 69.
00:08:56Now, this is the dreaded chicane.
00:08:58And Verstappen making a move up the inside.
00:09:01You see it. They were just cut away, unfortunately.
00:09:03Verstappen, then, making a move on a Raikkonen for seventh place.
00:09:07So, another charge early on from the Dutchman.
00:09:10Three-tenths of a second.
00:09:11The lead of Michael Schumacher at the end of that first lap.
00:09:14Look how closely they are packed together now.
00:09:16The first four round turn two.
00:09:19And into the pits comes the Benetton of Vissi Calhoun from that right front.
00:09:23He's hit something very hard indeed.
00:09:25That is the first retirement of this year's Canadian Grand Prix.
00:09:29Giancarlo Fisichella out of the two Ferraris.
00:09:32The Williams and the McLaren of David Coulthard
00:09:35are one, two, three, four together at the front
00:09:38with Barrichello making the pace at the moment.
00:09:40Yeah, Barrichello very fast and already harrowing Coulthard.
00:09:44It'll be interesting to see the fuel load.
00:09:46But Barrichello then appearing.
00:09:48He had a bad grid slot, as we know.
00:09:50Maybe he's running a bit lighter to try to make up in the early stages.
00:09:53And that's worked out well so far.
00:09:55Already clearing truly, as you point out.
00:09:57So, Schumacher, point three ahead at the end of the first lap.
00:10:01Closely followed by then a Jaguar and a...
00:10:04Eddie Irvine out.
00:10:05And one of the Saubers didn't see which one.
00:10:08It's Heidfeld.
00:10:09Nick Heidfeld.
00:10:10They were together on the previous lap.
00:10:12They were 11th and 12th.
00:10:13Maybe Heidfeld was trying to get past Eddie Irvine.
00:10:16I don't know.
00:10:17But whatever.
00:10:18They are both out of the race.
00:10:19So, that's three cars out.
00:10:21Heidfeld, Irvine and the previous retiree.
00:10:26And over the line they go.
00:10:28Now, that is into the third lap.
00:10:30Michael Schumacher has increased his lead to seven-tenths of a second.
00:10:34But over the first four, there are only one point to seven seconds.
00:10:38With a gap developing between Barrichello, who is fourth, and Jarno Trulli.
00:10:42Three seconds behind in fifth place.
00:10:44Yellow flag.
00:10:45Waved yellow flags.
00:10:46And Marshall's on track.
00:10:47How much will the drivers yield?
00:10:48Not much for the looks of it.
00:10:50They're still pretty much on the gas.
00:10:52And here we're going to see the start.
00:10:54I'm not sure what we...
00:10:55Oh, and that's Villeneuve.
00:10:56Not getting away.
00:10:57Is that the green flag lap that I told you about, the BIR Slowway?
00:11:00Yes, it is.
00:11:01I think that's a replay of the green flag lap, actually.
00:11:04Although Villeneuve is...
00:11:06Where is Villeneuve in the race at the moment?
00:11:09Thirteenth at the present moment.
00:11:11But behind, Pedro de la Rosa.
00:11:13So, just one Jaguar out.
00:11:15And that's very tough indeed, because Irvine has been going...
00:11:18That's what happened to Fisichella.
00:11:20He was hit.
00:11:21He bumped into his teammate, Jenson Button,
00:11:25as Bernoldi went through on the inside of the chicane
00:11:28and straight down the pit lane.
00:11:30It couldn't have happened in a better place or a worse place,
00:11:32as far as Fisichella's concerned.
00:11:33And look at Barrichello shaping up for a nice slipstream on Coulthard.
00:11:36Now he has the right position, too.
00:11:38So, Barrichello probably with a bit less fuel, making it work beautifully
00:11:43and quite easily, then, past the McLaren in the early stages.
00:11:47Barrichello on the move.
00:11:48Yeah, don't start getting depressed, you McLaren fans,
00:11:52because it could well be that Rubens Barrichello is on a light fuel load
00:11:57and that David Coulthard is on a heavier fuel load.
00:12:00And we know that the McLaren is extremely fuel-efficient.
00:12:03They demonstrated that at Monaco.
00:12:06And David Coulthard could well be just held up momentarily,
00:12:10perhaps losing a tenth of a second here or there,
00:12:12because he's in a heavier car.
00:12:14But whatever, Barrichello is certainly searing through the field.
00:12:17He's closing right up now on Ralf.
00:12:20And that was a replay, then.
00:12:22It looked like Irvine tagged the back of Heidfeld as they were in Turn 8
00:12:26and the pair of them straight into retirement.
00:12:29So, Barrichello closing quickly in, then, on Ralf Schumacher.
00:12:33Fastest lap of the race, Ralf Schumacher.
00:12:35He's just gone round in 1 minute 20.7.
00:12:39And that compares with the lap record.
00:12:41It's 1.7 seconds off the lap record held by Mika Häkkinen last year.
00:12:47And Schumacher, Ralf, is closing a little on his brother,
00:12:51but it looks to me as though Michael's got things well under control.
00:12:54So, it is Michael Schumacher, Ralf Schumacher, Barrichello, Coulthard,
00:12:58Trulli is fifth, Panis is sixth, Verstappen is seventh.
00:13:01Excellent, that. Excellent.
00:13:03And Kimi Räikkönen is eighth.
00:13:05Bits of Benetton bodywork flapping around as they break into the final corner.
00:13:10That can easily puncture your tyres.
00:13:12But Barrichello, then, a new fastest lap by a long way, a 1.19.9.
00:13:17And Michael sitting pretty.
00:13:19He's got his brother and he's got his team-mate
00:13:21between himself and his main championship contender, David Coulthard.
00:13:25And here we see the move.
00:13:27Barrichello with track position, greater straight-line speed,
00:13:30having pulled nicely out of the slipstream of that McLaren and made it stick well.
00:13:34And where is Mikko Häkkinen, who started eighth?
00:13:37He is tenth. He's lost two places.
00:13:40He's been repassed by Riccardo Zonta.
00:13:43Kimi Räikkönen, who started alongside and slightly ahead of him on the grid,
00:13:46is still in front.
00:13:48And it's still Michael Schumacher, Ralf Schumacher,
00:13:51and Barrichello pushing, pushing, pushing.
00:13:54The young Brazilian who's driven for Stewart,
00:13:57who's driven for Jordan, of course.
00:13:59Two pole positions in his career and one win.
00:14:02And James Allen has got news.
00:14:04Yeah, that was expected, I think, by the McLaren team.
00:14:06They believed that Rubens Barrichello was going to start this race
00:14:09on a two-stop fuel strategy.
00:14:10They think he's going to come in for his first stop around about lap 26.
00:14:14He's carrying about 30 kilos less fuel,
00:14:16which is about nine-tenths of a second a lap around here.
00:14:19Advantage over the one-stopper cars, which are the ones in front of him
00:14:22and David Coulthard.
00:14:23Interestingly, just before kick-off, guys,
00:14:25I saw Ron Dennis and Pat Fry working on Coulthard's car,
00:14:29looking very concerned.
00:14:30Coming up onto the pit wall to look at Coulthard's car
00:14:32as it went for the start.
00:14:34Martin saw something being thrown out,
00:14:36but there was a little concern there.
00:14:37We'll try and follow that up.
00:14:39He threw something out.
00:14:40It looked like a piece of tape or something from inside the cockpit,
00:14:44maybe a piece of padding.
00:14:45Hopefully, it shouldn't really affect his race.
00:14:47The problem for Barrichello is he needs to clear that Williams.
00:14:50If he's on a light fuel load, we're pretty sure that he is.
00:14:53And to make that pay off this afternoon,
00:14:56he needs to clear that Williams very quickly
00:14:58because I'm sure his teammate will then let him through.
00:15:01Michael Schumacher will let him through
00:15:03if he's on a different strategy.
00:15:04And you're looking at Trulli, who is 5th,
00:15:07Panis, who is 6th,
00:15:08and Verstappen, I'm sure, is on a light fuel load in the arrows.
00:15:13He's done that in the past.
00:15:14It looks to me as though he's doing it again.
00:15:15He's in 7th place.
00:15:16And that's Montoya getting extremely close
00:15:19to the back of Mika Häkkinen, 10th and 11th.
00:15:22Häkkinen, I saw in the background, getting very leery
00:15:24into Turn 3 on the first lap of the race.
00:15:27That's why he slipped down to 10th.
00:15:28Oh, and Barrichello spins it!
00:15:29Sorry, Martin, Barrichello spins out
00:15:32as he tries to get past Ralph Schumacher.
00:15:34He's kept the engine running and through Striep.
00:15:37That's Verstappen, who's just gone through.
00:15:39And behind him, Raikkonen and Zonta.
00:15:41It's a bad, bad blow for Rubens Barrichello.
00:15:44Curious how you can spin a car these days
00:15:46in a traction zone with traction control, Murray.
00:15:49Very unusual.
00:15:50I'll need to see a replay of that
00:15:51because I was looking at the data computer up here.
00:15:54But maybe Barrichello clipped a kerb or something.
00:15:56But surprising that he can...
00:15:58I haven't seen a car spin there for years, actually,
00:16:01on the way out of that corner,
00:16:02especially with traction control.
00:16:03Here we go then.
00:16:04Look, he comes off the inside of the kerb.
00:16:07Yeah, just lights the rear wheels up.
00:16:08So something awry there, I think, with the electronics.
00:16:11Well, he's down to 14th place now
00:16:13behind Enrique Bernaldi,
00:16:15the man who caused all the controversy at Monaco
00:16:18by staying ahead of David Coulthard.
00:16:20But I tell you who I think is in a very strong position,
00:16:23and that's Ralph Schumacher.
00:16:25He is 1.1 seconds behind his brother, Michael.
00:16:29I believe he's on a heavy fuel load
00:16:31because he was only 10th quickest in the warm-up this morning.
00:16:34We know he's on the hard compound Michelins.
00:16:37We know they like the heat.
00:16:39The track temperature is now 33 degrees,
00:16:41looking good for Ralph Schumacher,
00:16:43looking better for Michael Schumacher at the moment,
00:16:45leading on lap 7 and 69.
00:16:48I think Jenson Button's got a stop-go penalty
00:16:51for jumping the start, Murray.
00:16:53Let's just have another look at that computer.
00:16:5510-second stop-go penalty for car number 8,
00:16:58jump start, and I believe that is Jenson Button.
00:17:02And the race order of lap 7
00:17:05as we look now at the background at Rubens Barrichello.
00:17:08Here is Trulli, and he is followed by Olivier Panis,
00:17:12who is followed by Verstappen.
00:17:14There is the Arrows.
00:17:15Next one through after Verstappen is Raikkonen,
00:17:18and then behind, Kimi Raikkonen,
00:17:20Ricardo Zonta and Micah Hakkinen.
00:17:22So we're on lap 8.
00:17:24We are over 1 tenth distance already.
00:17:27Retirees, Fisichalla out early.
00:17:29Irvine and Heidfeld had a coming together,
00:17:32so that is three retirements,
00:17:34and into the pit lane comes Jenson Button now
00:17:37for his 10-second penalty.
00:17:39It's not going to make much difference to the Benettons,
00:17:42to be quite honest,
00:17:43because after having had a dreadful seven first races,
00:17:48except for just the one point in Brazil from Fisichalla,
00:17:53they're not showing much better form here in Canada.
00:17:55And again, we wait and wait for the improvement
00:17:58that they confidently say they're going to have in France,
00:18:01and that is two races from now.
00:18:03Lap 8 then.
00:18:04Michael Schumacher is now 1.4 seconds ahead of his brother,
00:18:08who is four seconds ahead of David Coulthard.
00:18:11But this race is going to go on like this
00:18:14until the pattern emerges with pit stops.
00:18:17Some people will be on a one-stopper, which is usual here,
00:18:20some will be on a two, which is comparatively unusual,
00:18:24and we're on a going-to-a-break.
00:19:44Lap 9.
00:20:15Lap 10.
00:20:39Out of the pit lane goes Jenson Button
00:20:42after his ten-second penalty.
00:20:46And here is Jenson Button
00:20:48with Michael Schumacher leading on lap 10.
00:20:50But watch in the background the orange arrows of Jos Verstappen.
00:20:54He's driving absolutely superbly in the Asia Tech-powered car,
00:20:59and he is in sixth position.
00:21:01And look at the way he's pushing Olivier Panis in the white VAR,
00:21:05who is chasing Trulli in the yellow Jordan.
00:21:07And they are fourth, fifth, and sixth.
00:21:09Now Verstappen coming out of the last turn
00:21:11so much faster than Panis.
00:21:13Going to go down the outside.
00:21:14Panis surely can close him off.
00:21:16We've seen Verstappen often running
00:21:18with a lower fuel load at the start of the race,
00:21:20and it makes him remember in Kuala Lumpur
00:21:23where he was effectively virtually leading the race.
00:21:26But it doesn't pay off.
00:21:28You pay the price later on, of course, during the Grand Prix.
00:21:30While you're away, Alonso has dropped out of the race.
00:21:33Jenson Button has made his second pit stop.
00:21:36The first was for a speeding penalty.
00:21:38The second was for a change of tyres.
00:21:40And I saw his mechanic pointing at the nose,
00:21:42saying there is some damage too.
00:21:44Louise, what can you tell us?
00:21:46I'm going to have a chat with Giancarlo Fisichella
00:21:48four times on the podium,
00:21:49but it wasn't to be this time, was it?
00:21:51Yeah, unfortunately.
00:21:53Bernal had a problem in the hairpins with his engine.
00:21:56I don't know what happened.
00:21:57He stole or something like that.
00:21:59And in acceleration I went on his back of the car
00:22:02and I broke my front nose.
00:22:05Then in braking for the last corner,
00:22:08Jenson overtook me.
00:22:10But he comes completely on my line
00:22:13and there was no front nose and no down-front downforce.
00:22:17So when I went in braking, I just went on his car.
00:22:21I'm very sorry about that.
00:22:23Thanks, Giancarlo.
00:22:24All right, lap 12.
00:22:26The thing that's interesting me
00:22:27is the lack of progress of Mika Häkkinen
00:22:30in his terrible season that he was having.
00:22:32He started 8th, he dropped to 10th.
00:22:34He's now in 9th position.
00:22:36He can't get past Riccardo Zonta,
00:22:39who is 8th on his return to Grand Prix racing
00:22:42as a result of Princeton not being here.
00:22:44And this is Jacques Villeneuve in 13th position.
00:22:48And he is now chasing Barrichello in the Ferrari,
00:22:52who's threading his way up through the field
00:22:54after dropping down into 14th place with that spin.
00:22:57Yes, fastest man in the race earlier on,
00:22:5919.9 with Barrichello.
00:23:01By the time he recovered across the various stretches of grass,
00:23:04he made it into with the spin.
00:23:06He went down to about 14th or 15th.
00:23:08Bernoldi pitted.
00:23:09That led him through one place.
00:23:11And now he's past Villeneuve for another
00:23:14and already chasing De La Rosa down next in the Jaguar.
00:23:17So Barrichello once again making his way through the field.
00:23:21What's surprising me, Murray, in a way,
00:23:23is that Trulli is hanging on to third-placeman Coulthard
00:23:27without too much difficulty
00:23:28and dragging Verstappen, Räikkönen, Zonta, Häkkinen and Montoya
00:23:33pretty much along with him.
00:23:35Yes.
00:23:36We can't really draw any conclusions, as I keep saying,
00:23:39until after the pit stops.
00:23:41I'm surprised that David Coulthard
00:23:43is now nearly 10 seconds behind Michael Schumacher.
00:23:46Maybe that can be accounted for by a heavy fuel load on one
00:23:50and a lighter fuel load on the other.
00:23:52And the same thing, I suppose,
00:23:53could apply to Micke Häkkinen down in ninth place.
00:23:57But I've got a feeling that it's clutching at straws a bit
00:24:00as far as McLaren devotees are concerned.
00:24:03But Rubens Barrichello is certainly the quickest man on the track.
00:24:07He's just gone round in one minute 19.8,
00:24:10which is just 8 tenths of a second off the lap record,
00:24:14which was held by Micke Häkkinen last year.
00:24:17And Barrichello closing right up now on Montoya.
00:24:21Barrichello is in 11th place.
00:24:23There is Verstappen in the orange arrows
00:24:26chasing Olivier Pannis.
00:24:29Now, look back at the screen now.
00:24:32Eddie Jordan and Ian Phillips sitting on the Jordan gantry
00:24:37watching the race develop as Coulthard,
00:24:40truly, Pannis Verstappen.
00:24:42David Coulthard, he's finished in the points every race this year.
00:24:47Yeah, Coulthard, then, I think, will be disappointed
00:24:49at this stage of the proceedings.
00:24:51A full 10 seconds off the leader, as you pointed out, Murray,
00:24:54and very much with that pack, able to stay in touch with him
00:24:57and looking to confirm that problem.
00:24:59Häkkinen there, really struggling along down in ninth place.
00:25:04But remember, we know Coulthard pitted on lap 64 in Monte Carlo.
00:25:09We know they can get a lot of fuel on board that McLaren,
00:25:12and we may see them picking up speed as the first stint goes on.
00:25:16And Montoya shaping up for a run.
00:25:19Which way will he go?
00:25:20And is he close enough to have a go at Häkkinen?
00:25:22It doesn't appear so.
00:25:23Barrichello's got his hands full now,
00:25:25trying to pass Montoya, who's trying to pass Häkkinen.
00:25:28But we've seen Barrichello so fast down the straights.
00:25:31Yeah, Pedro de la Rosa behind him in the Jaguar.
00:25:34But you're looking at the battle for 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th.
00:25:37Zonta in the yellow Jordan.
00:25:39Häkkinen in the silver and black McLaren.
00:25:42Montoya in the Williams.
00:25:44And here we are, coming through and lapping,
00:25:47is the Ferrari as behind him.
00:25:50Ralf Schumacher still in second place.
00:25:52And look how close it is now.
00:25:548 tenths of a second.
00:25:56Ralf Schumacher, as they got through the traffic,
00:25:59has closed right up on his brother.
00:26:01Now, if the Michelins do go off,
00:26:03and we know they do after the beginning of the race,
00:26:06and then come back again,
00:26:08and we're on to lap 14 now,
00:26:10as Ralf Schumacher is constantly having a look for a way past.
00:26:13He's probably got more power, surprising as it may seem,
00:26:16from his BMW engine
00:26:18than his brother Michael has from the Ferrari.
00:26:20Anyway, it is a colossal scrap.
00:26:23Down to just 4 tenths of a second then.
00:26:25So, Ralf, a full 4 tenths faster.
00:26:27We've got a carbon copy situation,
00:26:29but in reverse at the moment.
00:26:31You've got Michael Schumacher
00:26:32fending off the Williams of Ralf Schumacher.
00:26:35Further down, you've got Barrichello
00:26:37trying to pass the Williams of Montoya for 10th and 11th.
00:26:41But right now, this is, of course, the main race on the track.
00:26:45Ralf Schumacher, if he's got any tyre problems going away,
00:26:48I think that phase of the race is over, Mario.
00:26:50I think he's got a fast motor car underneath him.
00:26:52Yeah, lap 15 now.
00:26:54You can see the two leaders. There they are.
00:26:56David Coulthard is third, 10 seconds behind Michael Schumacher.
00:26:59Riano Trulli in the Jordan 4th.
00:27:01Olivier Paris is fifth. Verstappen is sixth.
00:27:04And those three are absolutely together.
00:27:06Kimi Räikkönen is in 7th place.
00:27:08Magnificent.
00:27:09Riccardo Zonta, a superb drive on his return to Grand Prix racing.
00:27:13He is in 8th position in the race,
00:27:15and he's ahead of and has passed Mika Häkkinen.
00:27:18Montoya is in 10th, followed by Rubens Barrichello.
00:27:22And everybody up to 17th now has been lapped.
00:27:26Jenson Button, of course, has been in for a 10-second stop
00:27:29and has been lapped.
00:27:30Alonso is out. Heidfeldt is out.
00:27:33Irvine is out. Fisichella is out.
00:27:35The brothers Schumacher exit the chicane
00:27:38and go through and complete their 15th lap
00:27:41into lap 16.
00:27:42And the gap between them, half a second.
00:27:45That was the gap between them on the front row of the grid
00:27:49after qualifying. It's mighty close.
00:27:51These two brothers were in a class of their own,
00:27:53in my view, in qualifying yesterday.
00:27:55And that's certainly the case then in the race today.
00:27:57They've got the cars working very well.
00:27:59But look what a menace Ralph is going to be
00:28:02for the rest of the afternoon.
00:28:03I don't think Michael's going to easily pull away from that Williams.
00:28:06And Ralph looking very secure.
00:28:08Michael will remember the mistake he made here
00:28:10and clouting the wall, taking himself out of the race.
00:28:13And he won't be wanting to do that.
00:28:15He could well do without this pressure from his little brother.
00:28:18Yeah, Michael Schumacher has driven in twice as many Grand Prix
00:28:22as his brother.
00:28:23He is seven years older,
00:28:25but there are those that think that now that Ralph Schumacher
00:28:28is developing as well as he is
00:28:30and has got rid of the wildness that he had
00:28:32when he started with Jordan,
00:28:34he's going to be more than a match for brother Michael
00:28:37from now on,
00:28:38particularly as Williams, BMW and Michelin
00:28:41hone the package.
00:28:43David Coulthard third,
00:28:44Joliet fourth,
00:28:45Pannis fifth
00:28:46and in sixth position still
00:28:48the magnificent Jos Verstappen.
00:28:51When is he going to have to come in?
00:28:53We're on lap 15 now.
00:28:55If he's on a two-stop strategy,
00:28:57I would think he's going to stay out there
00:28:59for at least another 11 laps.
00:29:01And Bernoldi was accused of holding up
00:29:05David Coulthard at Monaco
00:29:07so that he's sponsored to get the maximum amount
00:29:10of television coverage.
00:29:11Well, Jos Verstappen has done a superb job
00:29:14for them this year
00:29:15and he's doing a fantastic job for them
00:29:17here in Canada.
00:29:19Pannis there is Jos,
00:29:21Jos the boss.
00:29:22A very tough, pretty, determined Dutchman
00:29:24who runs a karting school
00:29:26at Marseille where he lives.
00:29:29And now Louise Allen has news.
00:29:31Louise Goodman-Murray with Eddie Irvine
00:29:34has finally made his way back to the paddock.
00:29:36Eddie, we didn't really get a clear view of what happened.
00:29:38What can you tell us?
00:29:39It's just, you know, the kart felt good
00:29:41like it did this morning.
00:29:42You know, we've made a big setup change overnight
00:29:45and it's just transformed the car
00:29:47and, you know, the car was back to the way
00:29:49we thought it should be
00:29:50and trying to make up ground
00:29:52and didn't do it, you know,
00:29:54the greatest overtaking maneuver on Eidfeld
00:29:56and two of us touched, you know,
00:29:58but I had to get stuck in.
00:30:00There's no option when you're 15th on the grid.
00:30:02Thanks, Eddie.
00:30:03Or even James Goodman.
00:30:04Sorry, Louise.
00:30:05Yeah, well, that's as near as you're going to come
00:30:07from a racing driver to admitting fault.
00:30:09I didn't do the greatest overtaking maneuver.
00:30:12In other words, I ran into him,
00:30:13but at least Eddie had the good grace
00:30:15to virtually admit that anyway.
00:30:17But he was trying to make his way through the field.
00:30:19Ralph has been stunningly fast
00:30:20in the middle sector of that final,
00:30:22of the last lap.
00:30:23A new fastest lap of the race then
00:30:25for Ralph Schumacher that time around.
00:30:27The gap down according to the computer
00:30:29to 0.4 of a second
00:30:30looks a bit less than that to me now.
00:30:32I was talking to my wife earlier on.
00:30:33She said, I do hope the brothers Schumacher
00:30:36don't get too violent with each other.
00:30:38And my answer to that is
00:30:40both of them have said
00:30:41we've raced against each other
00:30:42for years and years and years in karts.
00:30:45We know where one is good
00:30:47and the other is not so good.
00:30:49And you don't have to worry.
00:30:50We are not going to take each other off.
00:30:52Well, first of all,
00:30:53Ralph has got to get right up with his brother
00:30:56before he can attempt to get past.
00:30:58We're on lap 18 now.
00:30:59Ralph Schumacher has again
00:31:01gone faster than anybody else has been.
00:31:03He's knocked two tenths of a second
00:31:05off his previous fastest lap.
00:31:07They still haven't got down to quite
00:31:09the lap record speed from last year,
00:31:11but it's getting quicker all the time
00:31:13as the fuel load goes down.
00:31:15So it's Michael who's pulling the fastest
00:31:18first sectors and Ralph
00:31:19clawing three tenths back
00:31:21through the middle part of the lap.
00:31:22The man under pressure is Coulthard
00:31:24in third place, 12 seconds off the lead.
00:31:27Now just 0.6 ahead of Trulli
00:31:29and losing three quarters of a second
00:31:31to Trulli last time around.
00:31:32So Coulthard coming under pressure.
00:31:35Meanwhile, Ralph keeping the pressure
00:31:37on Michael too.
00:31:38Yeah, and this is bad news for McLaren
00:31:41and bad news for David Coulthard
00:31:43because at the present moment,
00:31:44Michael Schumacher is on a maximum 10 points.
00:31:48His teammate, Barrichello,
00:31:49is a long way from being in the points
00:31:51at the moment.
00:31:52He's in 11th place.
00:31:53But David Coulthard,
00:31:54who is 12 points behind Michael Schumacher
00:31:57in the World Championship at the moment,
00:31:59is now a further six points behind
00:32:02the difference between first and third.
00:32:04Jarno Trulli driving an excellent race.
00:32:07It really is time this young Italian
00:32:10was able to finish where he deserves to finish.
00:32:13He's had all sorts of problems.
00:32:15He's an excellent driver.
00:32:16He led a Grand Prix as long ago as 1997
00:32:19for Prost in Austria.
00:32:21And at the present moment,
00:32:22he's fourth, still ahead of Panis and Verstappen.
00:32:25Verstappen, you're looking out there then.
00:32:27So there is that train.
00:32:28Third, fourth, fifth, and sixth.
00:32:31And it's very, very close.
00:32:32It's just over two seconds
00:32:34between the lot of them.
00:32:35And James is down in the pits.
00:32:37Yeah, definitely something amiss,
00:32:38I'm afraid, with David Coulthard's car.
00:32:40He should be.
00:32:41Even if he was carrying a little bit more fuel,
00:32:42he'd be only about six or seven seconds
00:32:44behind the leaders,
00:32:45not the 12 or 13 he is.
00:32:46Pat Fry, his race engineer,
00:32:48has now come off the wall.
00:32:49He's in the garage,
00:32:50and they're working on the spare car.
00:32:52There's obviously something on the spare car
00:32:53that they want to either take off
00:32:55or learn from.
00:32:56But when David comes in,
00:32:57they can change it.
00:32:58There's something he's fighting in that car, guys,
00:33:00and that's the reason he's off the pace.
00:33:02Yeah, look at this battle behind.
00:33:04Zonta in the yellow car is eighth,
00:33:06then there's Mika Häkkinen,
00:33:07Montoya, and Barrichello.
00:33:09There's the Scarlet Ferrari of Barrichello
00:33:11having a look at Montoya.
00:33:13And the chap who's holding them all up
00:33:15in comparative terms
00:33:17is Kimi Räikkönen
00:33:18in the Sauber with the yellow mirrors.
00:33:20It's Räikkönen, Zonta, Häkkinen,
00:33:22Montoya, Barrichello,
00:33:24all virtually nose to tail
00:33:26because Räikkönen is going slower
00:33:29than the rest of them behind him
00:33:31can ideally go.
00:33:33In again comes Jenson Button.
00:33:36His teammate, Fisichella,
00:33:38was the first retirement
00:33:40after he had lost virtually his...
00:33:43Two cars in the wall.
00:33:45It's a Ferrari!
00:33:46It's Barrichello!
00:33:47Sorry, Martin.
00:33:48Rubens Barrichello out of the race now.
00:33:51Debris on the track.
00:33:52Who was the other car?
00:33:54I think there'll have to be a pace car situation there.
00:33:57You've got two cars in the same place
00:33:59and we think it's Montoya, of course,
00:34:01who they were nose to tail.
00:34:02Maybe Montoya went off
00:34:04and took Barrichello with him
00:34:06and the safety car is out.
00:34:08That's the only thing they can do.
00:34:09Safety car deployed then.
00:34:11That's a breath of fresh air for a few people
00:34:13because that is a very closed area.
00:34:15You can see for yourself
00:34:16trees either side of the racetrack.
00:34:18It's very difficult to clear the cars from there.
00:34:22It's the exit at Turn 4
00:34:23just before that nasty Turn 5
00:34:25where Panis smashed up his legs.
00:34:27Safety car then picking up the leaders
00:34:29and the pack will close.
00:34:31Beautiful timing from the point of view of the safety car
00:34:35as it came out of the pit lane.
00:34:37Michael Schumacher and brother Ralph
00:34:40closed up behind it.
00:34:41Now we're on the lap 21
00:34:43out of 69
00:34:45and it's going to be even closer
00:34:46when the safety car pulls in.
00:34:48So, yes, as you say,
00:34:50at the end of 20, just 21,
00:34:52let's see how many laps.
00:34:53And that is, yes, Montoya goes off,
00:34:55as I thought,
00:34:56Barrichello crashing, trying to avoid him.
00:34:59And that's the second race in succession
00:35:02where Montoya's made an unforced error.
00:35:04Barrichello really swerving
00:35:06to try to miss the stranded Williams
00:35:08and just putting himself straight in the wall.
00:35:10But the smart drivers will now
00:35:13turn the mixture down to lean,
00:35:15cruise round in top gear
00:35:17and for every two laps under the safety car
00:35:20they can normally save virtually a lap of fuel
00:35:23and that'll enable them to go further
00:35:25before that first crucial pit stop.
00:35:28So the thinking men
00:35:29should be getting that done right now.
00:35:31Well, it could be a big bonus for David Coulthard.
00:35:34He was 14 seconds behind.
00:35:37I was talking earlier on,
00:35:39I know the McLaren mechanics
00:35:40were all ready to make a stop
00:35:43for one or other of their drivers,
00:35:45whether it was Coulthard in third position
00:35:47or Mika Hakkinen down in ninth place,
00:35:49I know not.
00:35:50But as they round the hairpin,
00:35:52it's pace car.
00:35:53Michael, Ralf, Coulthard,
00:35:56Trulli, Pannis and Verstappen.
00:35:59And the marshals pushing the Ferrari out of the way.
00:36:03We're leaving Canada.
00:36:05We will be back.
00:36:10CAR ENGINES ROAR
00:36:41CAR ENGINES ROAR
00:37:00CAR ENGINES ROAR
00:37:11CAR ENGINES ROAR
00:37:34CAR ENGINES ROAR
00:37:41CAR ENGINES ROAR
00:37:52CAR ENGINES ROAR
00:38:05CAR ENGINES ROAR
00:38:10CAR ENGINES ROAR
00:38:15CAR ENGINES ROAR
00:38:19Lap 22.
00:38:20The safety car came out at the end of lap 20.
00:38:24So, two laps behind it.
00:38:26And of course, the field has closed up considerably.
00:38:28You can see Michael Schumacher leading his brother.
00:38:31There's David Coulthard.
00:38:33Jarno Trulli in fourth position.
00:38:35And here we go.
00:38:36Montoya loses the back of the Williams in turn four there.
00:38:39Overcorrect. Slams into the wall.
00:38:41Hard on the brakes, but nothing can happen from there.
00:38:44Barrichello having to spin in sympathy, really,
00:38:47in the hope of avoiding a car that decelerated
00:38:50from probably 80 miles an hour down to zero
00:38:53in about 10, 12 meters.
00:38:55Barrichello very unfortunate to get caught up in that incident.
00:38:58Very narrow through there.
00:38:59It's like a street circuit, effectively,
00:39:01around this Montreal circuit.
00:39:03In this lap, then, for the safety car.
00:39:06The race will restart at the end of this lap.
00:39:10And there we see them going through turn four.
00:39:13That's where the wreckage was of the two cars.
00:39:15So, a half a lap to go, then.
00:39:17James is down in the pits.
00:39:18Yeah, well, David Coulthard seriously considered a pit stop
00:39:21during that safety car period.
00:39:23There's something broken in the front end of his car.
00:39:25They've been studying the front of the spare car.
00:39:27I think it might be the mounting point of a bargeboard
00:39:29or something like that.
00:39:30But it's not something massively serious
00:39:32because it's obviously a very finely balanced decision
00:39:34whether to pit or not.
00:39:35Coulthard obviously reluctant to make the stop.
00:39:37The team was all ready for him.
00:39:39And, of course, he's made back the 13 seconds he'd lost
00:39:41on the leader.
00:39:42Yeah, certainly not conducive to him pushing, though.
00:39:45Pedro de la Rosa has benefited from the accident
00:39:49between Barrichello and Montoya.
00:39:51He's moved up to 10th position behind Micah Hackett.
00:39:54You can see Michael Schumacher keeps smoking his front tires.
00:39:56He's trying to warm his brakes up and his tires,
00:39:58but they're going a little bit too hard.
00:40:00And he wants to be careful he doesn't create
00:40:02some nasty flat spots.
00:40:03It gives you a vibration.
00:40:04And a couple of hundred miles an hour,
00:40:06you can't see where you're going
00:40:07because your eyeballs are vibrating too.
00:40:09But all the cars and all the drivers
00:40:12trying to generate some heat in the brakes,
00:40:14in the tires, ready to restart
00:40:17at the end of this next straight.
00:40:19Still no scheduled fuel stop.
00:40:21Well, I don't know.
00:40:22What's that bit of debris on the track?
00:40:23Has it been spotted by the marshals?
00:40:25Where is it?
00:40:26Well, it is somewhere around about turn five.
00:40:32I was saying, still no scheduled fuel stops.
00:40:36I was expecting them round about lap 26.
00:40:39And this is lap 23.
00:40:40But of course, they will be extended now.
00:40:42Michael then has got the jump on Ralph.
00:40:45Michael caught them sleeping a little bit there.
00:40:47And he is away.
00:40:48And he's opened up a small gap.
00:40:49Coulthard then managing to haul in that 12-second deficit,
00:40:54courtesy of the safety car.
00:40:56And this is slow puncture territory we're in here
00:40:59because a lot of debris on the track.
00:41:01Two Benettons running into each other.
00:41:02That's Verstappen out of sixth place.
00:41:05Yeah, he won sixth, if you remember.
00:41:07And as I expected, he's on a two-stop strategy.
00:41:10Yeah, but he didn't stop under the safety car then
00:41:13because he's wasted that opportunity.
00:41:14But as I said, slow puncture territory.
00:41:16Two Benettons into each other.
00:41:18Irvine into Heidfeld.
00:41:19And now Barrichello and Montoya both in the wall big time.
00:41:23And Michael, look, making the most of this restart.
00:41:27Yeah, although you can't crouch in the cockpit
00:41:29because you're so tightly belted in, you can't move.
00:41:32Michael Schumacher, when he's really, really, really trying,
00:41:35as he is now, gives the impression of crouching.
00:41:37His head seems to go lower in the cockpit.
00:41:39He looks over the side of it.
00:41:41And he's putting distance between himself and his brother.
00:41:44David Coulthard holding on, and Trulli, and Pannis.
00:41:47Between the top six, five, there are three seconds.
00:41:51And remember that Ralph on the harder Michelins,
00:41:54although it's difficult to know
00:41:55whether they're harder than the Bridgestones,
00:41:57but clearly taking longer to get those tyres up to temperature
00:42:00than the Bridgestone runners that are all around him.
00:42:03And Michael, look, just waltzing away in the distance.
00:42:06And now I think we can expect to see Ralph beginning
00:42:09to once again close that gap.
00:42:11And Kimi Räikkönen for Sauber in the points again.
00:42:15He is in sixth position ahead of Ricciardo Zonta,
00:42:19who is returning to Grand Prix racing with a flourish.
00:42:23Trulli is in fourth position in the Jordan Honda.
00:42:26His teammate, Ricciardo Zonta, is in seventh place.
00:42:30The top BAR, which also uses the Honda engine,
00:42:33is Olivier Pannis.
00:42:35And Jack Villeneuve is having a torrid race.
00:42:37He's down in tenth place,
00:42:39not even looking like being in the points at the moment.
00:42:42But there are still going to be a lot of retirements.
00:42:44Lap 25.
00:42:462.6 seconds faster then on that opening lap
00:42:49was Michael Schumacher over the rest of the field.
00:42:51He really has got that supreme confidence
00:42:54when there's an unknown level of grip.
00:42:57We see it on a wet, dry day.
00:42:59We see it under all sorts of circumstances.
00:43:01And he's made it stick.
00:43:02It's a personal confidence he has behind the wheel.
00:43:05And that's opened him up a handsome gap.
00:43:08It's funny how, in comparative terms,
00:43:10the wheels seem to have fallen off the McLaren wagon this season.
00:43:15With Micah Hakkinen still struggling along in eighth position,
00:43:20having retired this year already five times from seven races.
00:43:26David Coulthard, of course, has had two superb wins
00:43:29and has been in the points in every race.
00:43:32But he can't do anything about Ralph Schumacher.
00:43:34He can't do anything about Michael Schumacher,
00:43:37who are still racing ahead of him on lap 26 out of 69.
00:43:41The McLaren not looking well hooked up in the race.
00:43:44But, I mean, clearly they have been going much faster in recent races.
00:43:48But Hakkinen's not at his best, Murray, when he's back in the pack like that.
00:43:51We've seen this quite often from him.
00:43:53He doesn't seem to like necessarily charging through the pack at all times.
00:43:58On other days, we see some stunning performances from midfield.
00:44:01And Bernaldi, then, out of the race.
00:44:03Yep. Micah not at his best when he's having to charge, as you rightly say.
00:44:08So that's yet another retirement.
00:44:10That leaves 14.
00:44:12And the last car now is Jos Verstappen after his pit stop.
00:44:16He is the only driver in the 14,
00:44:19with the exception of Tarso Marquez in the Minardi,
00:44:22who has been in unseen by us.
00:44:24We're on lap 26.
00:44:25Here is the order after the safety car has returned.
00:44:28And you can see they're getting pretty spread out already.
00:44:30Ralph Schumacher 2.5 seconds behind his brother
00:44:34and 1.5 seconds ahead of David Coulthard.
00:44:37You can see how close Trulli is behind him.
00:44:39And Pannis is behind Trulli.
00:44:41And that's down to fifth position.
00:44:43And Kimi Raikkonen is 1.5 seconds behind Pannis.
00:44:47Still in the points, sixth position.
00:44:49Zonta is seventh, Häkkinen is eighth,
00:44:51De La Rosa in the Jaguar is ninth,
00:44:53Jack Villeneuve is tenth.
00:44:55Michael Schumacher, a new fastest lap, a 1.19.4.
00:44:58He was over half a second faster than anybody else.
00:45:01But Ralph now pumping them back in a 1.19.3.
00:45:04He is able to respond,
00:45:06now that his tyres are up to full operating temperature.
00:45:09So Ralph then has got a 2.4 second gap to close down.
00:45:13And if the performances are the same as in the first part of this race,
00:45:16pre the safety car,
00:45:18Ralph should now start closing in again on his brother.
00:45:21Yeah, perfect example of the fact that as a racing driver,
00:45:24it's not all reflexes.
00:45:27You have to think a great deal.
00:45:29And Ralph Schumacher had to remember
00:45:31that he mustn't overcook things on the Mitchell.
00:45:33He's got to let them come up to the right operating temperature,
00:45:36which they now have undoubtedly done.
00:45:382.4 seconds.
00:45:40The reduced gap between the race leaders,
00:45:43Ferrari and Williams of BMW.
00:45:46And still the Mataran of Coulthard is third.
00:45:49I'm sure Raikkonen under braking for turn eight.
00:45:52And you see the black dust coming out of all the cars.
00:45:54A lot of black dust coming out of the Sauber.
00:45:56I hope Raikkonen still has some brakes left
00:45:59towards the end of the 69 laps.
00:46:01But now you can see the pack beginning once again
00:46:05to spread out.
00:46:06Where's Ralph this time around?
00:46:08So far, he's about a tenth of a second up on this lap.
00:46:11It's Verstappen then who made that pit stop
00:46:13just after the safety car came in the pits.
00:46:16He is now...
00:46:17He's just taken 13th place back.
00:46:20So Jenson Button is out of the race, of course.
00:46:23So go through the retirees.
00:46:24Montoya crashed out.
00:46:26Unforced error.
00:46:27Barrichello falling off in sympathy.
00:46:29Nowhere to go.
00:46:30Button, technical problems.
00:46:32His teammate ran into him early in the race.
00:46:34Alonso just pulled off.
00:46:36Heidfeld out when he got pushed from behind
00:46:38by Eddie Irvine.
00:46:39And Fisichella running into the back of Button early on.
00:46:42And that is the retirees of the race so far.
00:46:45And Ralph Schumacher has got the gap down to 2.2 seconds
00:46:49as you look at Pannes followed by Raikkonen,
00:46:52Zonta, Hakkonen, De La Rosa,
00:46:54and somewhere down the road, Villeneuve.
00:46:56Yeah, don't relax, Michael, says Ralph,
00:46:58because I am after you.
00:47:012.8 seconds.
00:47:022.6 seconds.
00:47:032.4 seconds.
00:47:04It's now 2.2 seconds
00:47:07because Ralph Schumacher is lapping consistently
00:47:10two-tenths of a second faster than his brother.
00:47:13Now, whether this is because Michael knows exactly
00:47:16what the score is and is pacing himself,
00:47:19just aware we're not yet up to halfway through the race.
00:47:23Lap 34, 35 is going to be half distance.
00:47:26We're on lap 27 now.
00:47:28Look at De La Rosa shaping up to the back of Hakkonen,
00:47:31coming down into this.
00:47:32De La Rosa pulls out of the slipstream now.
00:47:34Will he be able to go up the inside?
00:47:35No, not able, not confident to step on the brake pedal that late.
00:47:40Hakkonen then maintaining 8th position.
00:47:43Yeah, Micah Hakkonen's problem, of course,
00:47:45is that he wants to get past Riccardo Zonta
00:47:48whilst he stops Petro De La Rosa from doing the same thing again.
00:47:52Off goes Luciano Berti in the Prost,
00:47:55well down in the field.
00:47:56He's 12th out of the 14 runners
00:47:59that are still going around out of the 22 who started.
00:48:02And Berti's teammate, Jean Alessi, in the other Prost,
00:48:06is only one place higher up the field in 11th position.
00:48:0914 cars left, 22 started.
00:48:12You can see how close it is.
00:48:14This is a typical Canadian Grand Prix.
00:48:18We see more nose-to-tail racing.
00:48:21So then the two Schumacher brothers up front,
00:48:24and they're in a class of their own.
00:48:26Michael's just done a 1.89 now.
00:48:2819.0 for his brother.
00:48:29They're over a second faster than anybody else on the racetrack.
00:48:33Coulthard just edging 9 tenths of a second ahead now of Trulli.
00:48:38That was the yellow Jordan of Zonta you were just looking at,
00:48:41still maintaining his position ahead of Hakkonen and De La Rosa.
00:48:45That's a new lap record then for Michael Schumacher.
00:48:50The first under 1.19 here at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
00:48:56And Ralf Schumacher goes faster again.
00:48:59He's got it down.
00:49:00It's still maintaining that 2 tenths of a second advantage.
00:49:03He's just gone around in 1.18.6,
00:49:06which is nearly 3 tenths faster than his brother.
00:49:08And the gap is now down to 2 seconds.
00:49:11And just as Ralf Schumacher closes up on his brother,
00:49:14he pulls away from David Coulthard,
00:49:16who is now 8 seconds behind Michael and 6 seconds behind Ralf.
00:49:21And he's only half a second ahead of Jarno Trulli.
00:49:24We heard from James Allen that there is some problem at the front of the car.
00:49:29Don't know exactly what it is.
00:49:31It doesn't seem to be slowing David much,
00:49:34but it is undoubtedly slowing him.
00:49:37But Michael, look at this.
00:49:39We know how reliable the Ferrari is.
00:49:42It seems to be virtually bulletproof.
00:49:44He's very, very seldom had trouble for the last 3 or 4 races,
00:49:49which takes him out in terms of engine, gearbox, suspension,
00:49:52all the other things.
00:49:54Luis Allen, what is it?
00:49:55With Juan Pablo Montoya.
00:49:57Juan Pablo, your second race when you've gone out with an accident in a row.
00:50:00Just tell us about that one.
00:50:02I don't really know what happened.
00:50:03It was very strange.
00:50:04I know Monaco made a mistake, but here,
00:50:06I was doing exactly the same every lap.
00:50:09And when I went over the curve,
00:50:11something in the rear just stepped out really weird.
00:50:14Now, you collected Rubens in that one.
00:50:15Did you have a chance to chat with him on the way back?
00:50:17Yeah, I didn't really touch him at anything.
00:50:19He saw I was going wide.
00:50:21I think it went very early in the power,
00:50:23and the car just stepped out as well.
00:50:24Thanks, Juan Pablo.
00:50:25Back to Maury Brundle.
00:50:26I'll get it right next time, Luis.
00:50:28Into the pits comes Pinto de la Rosa.
00:50:32Loses a place, of course.
00:50:33John Alessi goes past him.
00:50:35Have a look at this.
00:50:36Ralph Schumacher, 1.18.3.
00:50:38Just took three quarters of a second out of Michael.
00:50:41The gap now down to 1.4.
00:50:43As you watch de la Rosa rejoining
00:50:45in what will be last place but one.
00:50:48That'll be 13th, then, for de la Rosa.
00:50:51The first scheduled stop of the afternoon, I would suspect.
00:50:54And now, look at the gap, Maury.
00:50:55I don't know what's causing the gap to reduce.
00:50:58It could be the superior grunt of the BMW engine.
00:51:02It could be the superior Michelin tires,
00:51:06because Williams were very, very happy
00:51:08after qualifying yesterday,
00:51:10when Ralph did that sensational lap
00:51:12and started second on the grid.
00:51:14They weren't expecting to be as high as that.
00:51:16And I was talking to one of their top men afterwards,
00:51:18and he said,
00:51:19we are very, very happy about tomorrow, Maury,
00:51:22because we've got the harder compound.
00:51:24The Bridgestones have been blistering,
00:51:26and this could help us enormously.
00:51:29It is doing just that.
00:51:317 tenths of a second.
00:51:33It's come down from 2.8 seconds to 7 tenths.
00:51:36You can see how close they are.
00:51:38Every lap he's doing at the moment, Ralph Schumacher,
00:51:40is a new lap record.
00:51:41There you go again.
00:51:421 18th and a quarter of a second.
00:51:45And it's Coulthard who's under pressure now,
00:51:48lapping 1.7 seconds off of Schumacher's place.
00:51:51In third place is Coulthard.
00:51:53Truly, it's just 3 tenths of a second behind him.
00:51:56So Coulthard not able to get back up to speed again.
00:51:59Wonder what it is.
00:52:00Wonder what he threw out of that car
00:52:02on the start line.
00:52:03But this is a virtuoso performance
00:52:06from these two brothers up front
00:52:08and a mile clear of anybody else.
00:52:10Yeah, Verstappen and De La Rosa have made their stops.
00:52:13They are 12th and 13th, the top 11 in this race.
00:52:16We're on lap 32 out of 69,
00:52:18have yet to come in, of course,
00:52:20especially the two you're looking at.
00:52:22And they are so close
00:52:24that this race could now be decided
00:52:26by the pit stop.
00:52:28If a Ferrari mechanic or a Williams mechanic
00:52:31dropped a wheel nut or it took a bit longer
00:52:33than expected to get the wheel onto its studs
00:52:36or something like that,
00:52:38it could change the positions.
00:52:40If they come in on the same lap,
00:52:42it's going to be absolutely fantastic to watch.
00:52:44And if they don't, it's still going to be terrific.
00:52:47I think Routes surely got to have a chance
00:52:50of a nibble down into that last corner
00:52:52if he gets close to Michael in the slipstream.
00:52:54The Williams carrying a lot of wing this weekend.
00:52:56Normally, they have had up to 5 km an hour
00:52:59straight line speed advantage.
00:53:00They appear to have happily given that away this weekend
00:53:03to carry a barn door of a rear wing.
00:53:06It seems to be paying off in the later stages
00:53:09of this first stint of the race.
00:53:11And Ralph then with a lot of grip,
00:53:13but surely he'll get a nice slipstream
00:53:15from the back of his brother's Ferrari.
00:53:17Yeah, and why would they want a bigger rear wing?
00:53:19Because a bigger rear wing means more downforce.
00:53:22More downforce means more grip.
00:53:23More grip means more transmission.
00:53:25And you can see David Coulthard now
00:53:28has got Jarno Trulli right on his gearbox.
00:53:31Just as Ralph is challenging Michael,
00:53:33Trulli is challenging Coulthard for third place.
00:53:37Yeah, Coulthard looking well leery as well.
00:53:39Turning oversteer everywhere.
00:53:41Struggling to get the back end of that car in.
00:53:44I don't know when he's due in for a set of tyres.
00:53:46He'll be pretty relieved
00:53:47that maybe they'll even bring that forward
00:53:49because Coulthard appears to have no confidence
00:53:51in the back of the car.
00:53:53Yeah, and he is the only McLaren in the points.
00:53:56Mikko Häkkinen still making no progress.
00:53:59Ricciardo Zonta is just three tenths of a second
00:54:02in front of him in the Jordan,
00:54:04driving a very fine race
00:54:06and Mikko Häkkinen can do nothing about it.
00:54:08Jacques Villeneuve is nine tenths of a second
00:54:11behind Häkkinen in ninth position
00:54:13and Jean Alési is 2.7 seconds further back
00:54:16in tenth place in the Prost.
00:54:18Jos Verstappen's been in
00:54:19and we can expect him to move up through the field
00:54:22when the others come in.
00:54:23Well, to quote Murray Walker,
00:54:25catching is one thing, passing is quite another.
00:54:28And Ralph, now he's in the dirty air,
00:54:30he's just in the zone.
00:54:31And Bertie in the pit lane in the Prost.
00:54:34Again, I think that'll be scheduled.
00:54:36But now he's in the dirty air zone.
00:54:38He has lost three quarters of a second per lap
00:54:41and he's now just lapping
00:54:43at virtually identical times to Michael.
00:54:45So there was a bit of debris on the track there
00:54:48that Ralph ran over
00:54:51but we're on lap 34 now.
00:54:53It's surely not going to be all that much longer
00:54:56before they come in, one or other of them.
00:54:59And David Coulthard still just ahead of Jarno Trulli.
00:55:05Ferrari, Williams, McLaren, Jordan.
00:55:08VAR is still fifth.
00:55:10Sauber is still sixth.
00:55:12That is six different constructors in the top six places.
00:55:15Jordan are doing well in this race
00:55:17because Zonta is in seventh place.
00:55:19Only one place off the points
00:55:21as the race leaders come through to complete another lap.
00:55:24That is the end of their 34th lap
00:55:27and the gap is six-tenths of a second.
00:55:30So there's 35 laps to go.
00:55:3334 gold, 35 to go,
00:55:35including the one they are on,
00:55:37half distance in Canada.
00:55:41Coulthard edging a bit out on Trulli that time around.
00:55:44So stalemate in first and second positions.
00:55:4713 seconds now off the lead again.
00:55:50Coulthard, Trulli, seven-tenths,
00:55:52and Villeneuve then with a problem.
00:55:54Villeneuve in pit straight with a problem,
00:55:57and that's a long way from home, of course.
00:56:00It's an entire lap.
00:56:01Now he has to be so careful, and he knows.
00:56:03He has a look.
00:56:04It's such a dangerous place to cross.
00:56:06The end of the pit lane,
00:56:07if you come around the other side of the wall,
00:56:09you can have an enormous accident.
00:56:11They're already doing 150, 160 kilometres,
00:56:14100 odd miles an hour.
00:56:15And what are we going to see here?
00:56:16We're going to see...
00:56:19Nothing.
00:56:20We're going to see Villeneuve just beginning to falter
00:56:23and sensibly getting out of Alessi's way.
00:56:26Yeah, really, this is a jinxed circuit,
00:56:29as far as poor Jacques is concerned.
00:56:33Oh, and Ralph Schumacher right alongside Michael
00:56:36who moves across quite barely.
00:56:38But now, now the battle is really on.
00:56:41This is lap 35,
00:56:43and Ralph is giving his brother a very, very hard time.
00:56:47Michael under the most gigantic pressure,
00:56:50but he's got a clear track in front of him.
00:56:52He knows who's behind him.
00:56:53He knows it's his brother,
00:56:55and he's said time and time again,
00:56:57I love racing with Ralph because we trust each other.
00:57:00Poor Jacques walks in.
00:57:02This is, I think, the fifth year in succession
00:57:05that he's had something dramatic happen to him at Canada.
00:57:09We think it's transmission,
00:57:10and look, this is how far alongside Ralph
00:57:12got coming down into the last corner,
00:57:14and not quite far enough in his view to make it stick.
00:57:18So that's where Ralph's going to make the move
00:57:21if and when he makes it.
00:57:22But let's remember,
00:57:23Michael's trying to win a world championship.
00:57:25Ralph's trying to win another race.
00:57:28Yeah, very, very, very good point.
00:57:30Now, Ralph Schumacher, of course,
00:57:32won the San Marino Grand Prix,
00:57:34Jacques Villeneuve giving an interview.
00:57:37And whilst he's very anxious to win this one,
00:57:40he's going to be even more anxious to finish.
00:57:43And finishing is something
00:57:44that the Williams team have not been very good at this year
00:57:47because they've had...
00:57:49Sorry, Murray, here we go.
00:57:50Look, Ralph really got a nice run out of the hairpin
00:57:53last time around,
00:57:54but does not even attempt it this time.
00:57:56And you can see him treading slightly cautiously here.
00:58:00Doesn't want to run into Michael.
00:58:01Doesn't want to ruin his own race either.
00:58:03Tough call for him.
00:58:04They have run into each other before,
00:58:06back at the Nürburgring two or three years back
00:58:09in the first corner.
00:58:10A very nasty accident, that turned out to be.
00:58:12And they got caught up with the various teammates on that one.
00:58:16Wasn't a direct, just a pair of them.
00:58:18But this is a tough call for Ralph Schumacher.
00:58:21He's racing for BMW Williams.
00:58:23He's not racing for the Schumacher family.
00:58:25Yeah, as I was saying,
00:58:26Williams have had 11 retirements from 14 starts this year.
00:58:31Not entirely, therefore, as out of the pit...
00:58:34Sorry, Panis comes into the pit lane,
00:58:36followed by Zonta.
00:58:38Now, it's a race between the mechanics now.
00:58:41I would doubt that the Jordan people
00:58:44would be able dramatically to beat the BAR people.
00:58:48But remember that the order when they came in
00:58:50was Panis and Zonta.
00:58:52And out goes Olivier Panis.
00:58:54And Zonta is already making his way down the pit lane.
00:58:58And it's the Jordan ahead as they come out onto the track
00:59:02with a clear circuit.
00:59:04And still, Michael leads Ralph.
00:59:07Ferrari leads Williams.
00:59:09Ferrari engine leads BMW.
00:59:11Bridgestone lead Michelin.
00:59:13And Ralph is having a look all the time.
00:59:15Look to the left, look to the right.
00:59:17Through the chicane, over the line to complete the lap.
00:59:21And that is 37 completed into lap 38.
00:59:24The gap, well, it's a visual gap.
00:59:26But in terms of time, it was about four-tenths of a second
00:59:30into turn one.
00:59:31Out of turn two,
00:59:33now they accelerate away round here
00:59:36up towards the right and left at turns three and four,
00:59:39which they are at now.
00:59:41Approach the right-hander at about 155 miles an hour
00:59:44as we look down now.
00:59:46David Coulthard and Jarno Trolli
00:59:48in the McLaren and the Jordan, respectively,
00:59:50still third and fourth.
00:59:52And still on lap 38,
00:59:55none of the top seven have been in.
00:59:58Yes, eighth for Stefan, ninth for...
01:00:01Hello? Replay here.
01:00:04I think it's Hakkinen who's going to be taking Raikkonen.
01:00:07So Hakkinen then, and Hannes Pitts at the end of this lap,
01:00:10that's freed Mick Hakkinen, he's in fifth place.
01:00:13He's just done his fastest lap of the race
01:00:15somewhere near the leader's place at 19.0.
01:00:18So Hakkinen then does have a fast car underneath him.
01:00:21And for the first time in this race,
01:00:23a clear track ahead of him.
01:00:25And the gap between him and Jarno Trolli ahead of him
01:00:28is eight seconds.
01:00:29He's now very much in the points in fifth position.
01:00:32So both the McLarens are in the points,
01:00:35as in comes Olivier Pannis.
01:00:38Well, that's Pannis' second stop, Paris.
01:00:40Some kind of drama.
01:00:42I wonder if they got any fuel in it.
01:00:43They had a long fuel stop, remember?
01:00:45We think his teammate went out with transmission trouble.
01:00:49And maybe Pannis is...
01:00:51It's not a pit stop problem.
01:00:53Look, it looks a very similar problem to Villeneuve, doesn't it?
01:00:56A crawling BAR.
01:00:57He's out, he's out, he's out.
01:00:59Pannis has retired.
01:01:00Both the BARs are out.
01:01:02A big, big blow for them,
01:01:03because as I keep on saying,
01:01:05there is a war between Jordan and BAR
01:01:08for the custom of Honda.
01:01:10They both want Honda engines next year.
01:01:13All four cars, the two Jordans and the BARs,
01:01:16have got them this year.
01:01:17And now both the BARs are out
01:01:19and both the Jordans are very much in.
01:01:22Jarno Trolli has just been into the pits
01:01:25and his teammate Riccardo Zonta has also stopped.
01:01:28Fastest man on the racetrack last time around
01:01:31was Mika Hakkinen.
01:01:32Fourth place man now, Mika Hakkinen,
01:01:34because of Trulli's stop.
01:01:366.8 seconds behind Coulthard
01:01:38and homing in at a second and a half a lap.
01:01:40So Hakkinen's car working very, very well.
01:01:44Coulthard can't get his car working at all.
01:01:46Look how close Ralph is to Michael.
01:01:48Will he have a stab this time?
01:01:50And a strange time to cut away, Mr. Director.
01:01:53No, clearly, of course, he didn't get through.
01:01:56Yeah, of course, Michael is an absolute master of tactics
01:01:59and facing the car.
01:02:01There's very little between it at this point of the race
01:02:04between the two cars.
01:02:05I have the feeling that if Ralph Schumacher
01:02:08could only scramble past his brother,
01:02:10he could pull away.
01:02:12But he can't scramble past his brother.
01:02:14We're on lap 40 now.
01:02:17The window of coming in for a fuel stop
01:02:21on what is very clearly now a one-stop strategy
01:02:23for both these drivers
01:02:25is getting smaller and smaller all the time.
01:02:28Into the pits comes Kimi Räikkönen
01:02:30from fifth position.
01:02:32Stops.
01:02:33Up goes the front of the car.
01:02:35Up goes the back of the car.
01:02:36Off come the old wheels and tyres.
01:02:38On go the new ones.
01:02:39Clean his visor.
01:02:40Check that there's nothing in the radiators.
01:02:42Louise Goodman.
01:02:44Has Jacques Villeneuve with her.
01:02:45Murray, Jacques, you told me yesterday
01:02:47that this track wasn't fated for you.
01:02:49It's not exactly lucky, though, is it?
01:02:51Well, no.
01:02:52This weekend was really, really, really hard.
01:02:54It's the worst weekend I've ever had
01:02:56since I started racing, actually.
01:02:58We've had something go wrong every day.
01:03:00So it's been tough, yeah.
01:03:02Just briefly, what's actually put you out this afternoon?
01:03:04I'm not sure.
01:03:05I believe it's the clutch.
01:03:07But it could be something else.
01:03:08Louise, I must interrupt.
01:03:10I'm sorry.
01:03:12We were seeing another mighty challenge
01:03:14from Ralph Schumacher,
01:03:15but he just can't do it.
01:03:17He just can't get near enough to have a brave stab.
01:03:20In the race, he probably will,
01:03:21but it's two earlier days at the moment.
01:03:23And just to finish up what Jacques was saying there,
01:03:26he believes it's a clutch failure.
01:03:28It looked as if Olly Pannis' problem
01:03:30could well have been the same in the sister P.A.R.
01:03:32just one lap later.
01:03:34But Ralph, then, has got the fastest car underneath him,
01:03:37I think.
01:03:38I think with clear air,
01:03:39Ralph would be down there in the 17s by now.
01:03:41Yeah.
01:03:42Ten retirements,
01:03:44and there are 12 left.
01:03:46You've heard the retirements.
01:03:47I'll go through them again
01:03:48in order of retirement,
01:03:50as you watch Michael and Ralph fighting for the lead.
01:03:53Fisichella, Irvine,
01:03:54Heidfeldt, Alonso,
01:03:56Button, Barrichello,
01:03:58Montoya, Bernoldi,
01:04:00and Jacques Villeneuve are out of the race,
01:04:02as is Olivier Pannis.
01:04:04Last man running, Tarso Marquez.
01:04:06Another scrap shaping up, then,
01:04:08is Hakkanen, fourth-placed man,
01:04:10closing in down to 3.3 seconds
01:04:12on third-placed man, Kulthard,
01:04:14and Ralph, as close as ever.
01:04:16But, as I said in Monte Carlo,
01:04:18the man in front of you in a slow corner
01:04:20will always, of course, be on the throttle,
01:04:22a car length ahead of you,
01:04:24and launch out of the corner.
01:04:26Is this the lap Ralph can do it?
01:04:28No, it's not.
01:04:29No, and they're coming up to Luciano Berti
01:04:31to lap him.
01:04:33The young Brazilian,
01:04:34who has switched from Jaguar to Prost,
01:04:36is running last for one.
01:04:38He's 11th out of the 12 who are left.
01:04:40And both the Ferrari
01:04:42and the Williams are closing up on him.
01:04:44And if this happens at a difficult part of the course,
01:04:46when they make to pass,
01:04:48as I've said in the past,
01:04:50it could be Ralph Schumacher's opportunity
01:04:52if Michael gets his passing move wrong.
01:04:54I would be very surprised
01:04:56if he did, as talented
01:04:58and experienced a driver as he is.
01:05:00I think they should be bringing Kulthard in.
01:05:02He's losing too much time.
01:05:04Whatever his problem is out there,
01:05:06if it's tyres, he should be in now,
01:05:08because, truly, who he was racing with is out there,
01:05:10lapping faster behind him,
01:05:12because he's made his stop,
01:05:14but truly is going to slingshot past Kulthard.
01:05:16So is Hakkinen.
01:05:18So, Kulthard, then,
01:05:20needs to keep his championship hopes alive this afternoon.
01:05:22I think he needs to pit early.
01:05:24Hakkinen now, an 18.2.
01:05:26That is just about the fastest lap of the race.
01:05:28Not quite, though, is it, Murray?
01:05:30No, remember what I said about Jos Verstappen
01:05:32stopping early and he would recover?
01:05:34Well, he has recovered.
01:05:36He is now up into fifth position.
01:05:38Jos Verstappen in the orange arrows
01:05:40is up into fifth position,
01:05:42and here is Ralf Schumacher's opportunity again.
01:05:44Now, this time he might make it stick.
01:05:46No, he won't, because
01:05:48Michael takes the racing line
01:05:50and brother Ralf just
01:05:52backs off that modicum to say,
01:05:54OK, Michael, I'll stay here
01:05:56and I will be back.
01:05:58But it's very dirty up the inside there, Murray.
01:06:00It's so easy to go in there deep
01:06:02and then lock a wheel and bounce across those
01:06:04concrete blocks or
01:06:06across the grass
01:06:08crete itself, and we can see the McLaren
01:06:10mechanics as Hakkinen then
01:06:12shaping up to pass Coulthard,
01:06:14as Coulthard does pit early.
01:06:16I think that is a smart move, or probably
01:06:18earlier than he could have, judging by
01:06:20how far these McLarens have gone
01:06:22earlier in the season. They save fuel,
01:06:24of course, during the safety cup
01:06:26here at James Allen.
01:06:28I don't think it's tyres that's the problem. I think it's the front bargeboard
01:06:30that's flapping. There's a lot of
01:06:32detritus as well, and debris in the radiators.
01:06:34The temperatures have been high, obviously,
01:06:36but slight delay as they
01:06:38get the fuel in, and he's away
01:06:40safely, but Coulthard, a smart stop.
01:06:42He was 25 seconds ahead of
01:06:44Trulli. It'll be touch and go as to whether he rejoins
01:06:46in front of him, but I think he has. Well, he's just
01:06:48gone ahead of... Oh, and look at this!
01:06:50Bertie moves over and lets
01:06:52the leaders through.
01:06:54Hakkinen is up in the third place,
01:06:56having gone as
01:06:58far as ninth for a very long
01:07:00time. Verstappen is up to
01:07:02fourth. David Coulthard is fifth.
01:07:04Schumacher. Ralf is having yet
01:07:06another look at exactly
01:07:08the same place, and again, he
01:07:10backs off. Surely this can't
01:07:12go on much longer. But Ralf
01:07:14knows if he snatches a brake up the inside
01:07:16of his brother, he'll just career into
01:07:18the side of him, or across the
01:07:20grass creek, and he'll get a stop and go penalty
01:07:22if he makes a place
01:07:24by short-cutting the chicane. That's
01:07:26the problem of the dirty inside.
01:07:28Pannis had rejoined the racetrack,
01:07:30and it looks like, once again,
01:07:32he's going to retire.
01:07:34Well, here we are, lap 44.
01:07:36Schumacher, Schumacher, Hakkinen third,
01:07:38Verstappen fourth, Coulthard fifth, Jarno
01:07:40Trulli sixth, De La Rosa seventh in the
01:07:42Jaguar, Kimi Räikkönen down to eight,
01:07:44Felici is ninth, Sonta is tenth,
01:07:46followed by Bertie Marquez,
01:07:48and those are the twelve runners. And what
01:07:50you're seeing now
01:07:52is an absolute demonstration,
01:07:54complete proof of the fact that this
01:07:56is the greatest pair of
01:07:58brothers who have ever raced in
01:08:00Formula One. We've had the Mexican
01:08:02Rodriguez brothers, the Canadian
01:08:04Villeneuve brothers, the Fittipaldis
01:08:06from Brazil, the Schecters
01:08:08from South Africa, the
01:08:10Brabham brothers from Australia,
01:08:12the Stewart brothers from Scotland,
01:08:14the Brambillo brothers from
01:08:16Italy, and Marc and his brother
01:08:18Jordi Genet from Spain,
01:08:20but these two topped them all
01:08:22by a very, very long
01:08:24way. So no chance this time
01:08:26around. Verstappen then, remember he's on a
01:08:28two-stop, he's up to fourth place,
01:08:30Jos Verstappen. Häkkinen hasn't
01:08:32stopped yet in third,
01:08:34and he's 24 seconds off the lead,
01:08:36but Häkkinen absolutely on the march
01:08:38since the traffic made pit stops
01:08:40or tripped over themselves. Suddenly
01:08:42he's been on a pace that would have enabled
01:08:44him to probably win the race.
01:08:46Strange that, his McLaren working very well.
01:08:48Will Coulthard's work any better
01:08:50with a fresh set of tyres?
01:08:521.18.2, the fastest lap
01:08:54so far. They're lapping at about 1.18.3,
01:08:561.18.4 at the present moment,
01:08:58so they're very, very
01:09:00much on the ragged edge of going
01:09:02as fast as they possibly can
01:09:04as Michael tries to retain the lead.
01:09:06Rump tries to take it.
01:09:08They are 25 seconds ahead
01:09:10of Micah Häkkinen, but
01:09:12it's good news for McLaren, there's four
01:09:14potential World Championship points
01:09:16for Micah Häkkinen, who
01:09:18thus far, and this is the eighth race
01:09:20of the year, has only got four points,
01:09:22so he could double his score
01:09:24at the end of this race, but David
01:09:26Coulthard, down in fifth position,
01:09:28who needs every point he can get
01:09:30with Michael Schumacher,
01:09:32now 12 points ahead of him in the World
01:09:34Championship, is losing
01:09:36yet
01:09:38more points in comparison with the great
01:09:40German, who chases
01:09:42Ralph chases Michael
01:09:44down to the chicane.
01:09:46This is the end of the
01:09:4845th lap. Ralph follows
01:09:50in his brother's wheel tracks, over the line
01:09:52they go. Now Micah Häkkinen
01:09:54should be about
01:09:5625 seconds behind
01:09:58them. Hannes
01:10:00ran out of brakes, remember us talking at the beginning
01:10:02of how hard this place is on
01:10:04brakes, so we've had the first car out of the
01:10:06race after 45
01:10:08laps with braking
01:10:10problems.
01:10:12Well, here is
01:10:14Micah Häkkinen alone
01:10:16on the track. Fastest
01:10:18lap, 118
01:10:20point 1.
01:10:22This is showing exactly what
01:10:24you said, Martin. He's on his own now.
01:10:26He's got a clear track.
01:10:28He is really going for it. He's reducing
01:10:30the gap between himself and the
01:10:32leaders. I don't know if a
01:10:34superior fuel strategy or
01:10:36better fuel economy is going to help him,
01:10:38but if it is, he needs
01:10:40all the help he can get at the present moment.
01:10:42Yeah, that's despite having a
01:10:44fuel flap open. Of course, the pits are
01:10:46sometimes left-handed, sometimes right-handed.
01:10:48Two fuel flaps on a Formula 1
01:10:50car and they only use one per weekend.
01:10:52The other one they're not using this weekend
01:10:54is up on Häkkinen's car. Won't help the
01:10:56aerodynamics much, but of course
01:10:58Ferrari must be waiting for Michael.
01:11:00He will go straight down the pit lane.
01:11:02And Ralf Schumacher takes the lead
01:11:04in the Canadian Grand Prix and he
01:11:06knows now that he's got to go as
01:11:08fast as he possibly can to build
01:11:10up a gap with a clear track in
01:11:12front of him and hope that when he
01:11:14comes in for his fuel stop, he will
01:11:16be able to exit the pit lane in front of
01:11:18his brother Michael James. 60 kilos
01:11:20of fuel have to go into this car as well
01:11:22as the four tyres. Anything more than
01:11:249 seconds stationary is a problem
01:11:26for Ferrari and could hand the race
01:11:28to Williams. Good stop.
01:11:308.4. Williams, the pressure is
01:11:32on you now, guys. Yeah, indeed it is
01:11:34and Michael Schumacher
01:11:36regains the track before
01:11:38Micah Häkkinen goes through
01:11:40in third position.
01:11:42Now that is good, very, very good
01:11:44as far as Michael Schumacher is concerned
01:11:46because he now has got a clear track
01:11:48in front of him like his brother
01:11:50but this is the crucial point
01:11:52of the whole race. One fuel stop
01:11:54for Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari
01:11:56and Ralf Schumacher in the Williams
01:11:58BMW. Micah Häkkinen
01:12:00has still got to come in.
01:12:02Look at this lap that Ralf is on,
01:12:04Murray. Look at the computer data in front of
01:12:06us. Ralf is on a stunning
01:12:08lap. So if he's got a couple
01:12:10more laps of fuel available to him
01:12:12he could well leapfrog
01:12:14his teammates. Good news for Michael
01:12:16that he's able to have some
01:12:18clear traffic and look, Ralf goes
01:12:20round again. He's had to pass
01:12:22a Jordan during that lap. Did that help
01:12:24him or hinder him over the line?
01:12:26And it's 1 minute
01:12:2817.5
01:12:30so he obviously cleared the Jordan
01:12:32down the straight and that
01:12:34kind of pace will get him in front
01:12:36of the Ferrari. Yeah, Ralf knows
01:12:38exactly what the score is. He is
01:12:40reacting magnificently
01:12:42to the challenge that's been thrown down
01:12:44to him by his brother and
01:12:46the Ferrari team.
01:12:48It's showing too that the BMW
01:12:50engine appears to be more fuel
01:12:52efficient than the Ferrari engine. I was
01:12:54talking to Ross Brawn, the Ferrari boss
01:12:56yesterday. I said how's the fuel efficiency
01:12:58and he said we are struggling a bit.
01:13:00Yeah, Michael then full
01:13:024 seconds slower. That was his out lap
01:13:04and it was Ralf's hot lap of course
01:13:06that I'm comparing there. So
01:13:08Michael Schumacher definitely
01:13:10under pressure at this stage
01:13:12of the race. And this is lap 48
01:13:14out of 69. 21
01:13:16to go. In comes Jos Verstappen
01:13:18again. Lap 48
01:13:20this will be a second fuel
01:13:22stop. Let's just check. Yes, they're all
01:13:24ready for him. Up goes
01:13:26the whole car.
01:13:28It's a rather slow
01:13:30stop.
01:13:32I tell
01:13:34a lie. It's a good one. 8.4
01:13:36seconds and Jos
01:13:38Verstappen lights up the rear
01:13:40Bridgestones up to the maximum
01:13:42speed. Through goes
01:13:44Tarso Marquez who is 12th
01:13:46and last. And
01:13:48rejoining the race goes Jos Verstappen
01:13:50as Michael Schumacher
01:13:52now 25 seconds
01:13:54behind his brother Ralf.
01:13:56But Ralf of course has still got to
01:13:58come in. It's going to be mighty, mighty
01:14:00close when Ralf Schumacher
01:14:02exits the pit lane. I think Ralf's done enough
01:14:04on the track. Will Williams do enough
01:14:06in the pit lane? Another new lap
01:14:08record for Ralf on a 1.17
01:14:10.467 last
01:14:12time around. Michael a 1.18
01:14:14one that time around.
01:14:16Surely then Ralf has
01:14:18done enough. We'll be back very shortly.
01:14:343Lz 6.49 x (-0.001")
01:14:403F 5.83 x (-0.001")
01:14:463F 5.83 x (-0.001")
01:14:523F 5.83 x (-0.001")

01:16:583F 5.83 x --0.001")
01:17:04There you see it for yourself. So Ralph then, the end of this long straight, will just shoot down the pit lane.
01:17:09He'll lose a bit of time, will he? No, he's cleared that car nicely, so no in-lap problems for Ralph.
01:17:15Surely, he will come out in the lead. Watch the pit lane looming up now.
01:17:19Get the speed off before the speed zone now, and down he goes.
01:17:23It will be a reasonable run. Somewhere in the middle of the lane are the Williams team.
01:17:28And, uh, looks so slow, Mary, doesn't it?
01:17:31Yeah, but this is the crucial point of the whole race.
01:17:35If they do a nice, clean stop, and the Williams team are very experienced at this,
01:17:39on go the new Michelin tyres.
01:17:43The wheel nuts are tied up now. Where is Michael Schumacher?
01:17:47Ralph Schumacher comes out of the pit lane now, and there is Michael in the background.
01:17:51Ralph Schumacher rejoins the circuit, and a roar of approval from the crowd.
01:17:57They can tell a real fight when they see one.
01:18:00And Ralph Schumacher looks, I'm going to be very cautious in what I say now,
01:18:05looks as though he is on the way to a second brilliant victory of the year,
01:18:10having won the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola.
01:18:14Because he has come, he's stayed out, he put up four successive lap records
01:18:19to increase the gap between himself and his brother, Michael.
01:18:23And Michael Schumacher is now six and a half seconds behind his brother,
01:18:28with 18.18 laps to go.
01:18:31So Ralph Schumacher then on his out lap.
01:18:33Michael will close him down a bit on this lap,
01:18:35as he builds up full operating temperature on the brakes and tyres.
01:18:39Once more, we saw Ralph taking a bit of time to get up to speed after the pace car situation.
01:18:45With those harder Michelins, which are working so beautifully this afternoon,
01:18:49it's harder to chase, it's easier to chase rather than be chased.
01:18:53Can Michael turn the table?
01:18:54So Ralph Schumacher leads Michael Schumacher.
01:18:57Hakkinen stopped and maintained his third place ahead of Coulthard,
01:19:01who still has no pace despite the tyre stop.
01:19:05Some kind of drama going on with Coulthard, we don't know what.
01:19:07De la Rosa is fifth, I believe he will stop again yet.
01:19:11Jarno Trulli back in sixth place.
01:19:14Yes, good news for Jaguar fans out of the disappointment of Eddie Irvine's early retirement
01:19:19when he collided with Nick Heidfeld.
01:19:21Because Pedro de la Rosa, new to the team, is up there in fifth position behind David Coulthard.
01:19:28You can see how close the McLaren and the Jaguar are,
01:19:32and you can see that the yellow jaunt of Jarno Trulli is also up there.
01:19:37You can see the gap between them, as down to the dreaded chicane,
01:19:41they come and de la Rosa has a look.
01:19:45David Coulthard says no, moves across.
01:19:48We're on lap 53, 5.3 seconds the lead.
01:19:51Yeah, you saw de la Rosa catapult into the pit lane there behind Coulthard.
01:19:55It's so easy to misjudge that, you've got one car slowing for the hit of the chicane
01:19:59and another not slowing because he's going in the pit lane.
01:20:02Often the scene of a few near misses, so that'll put de la Rosa back down the pack a bit.
01:20:07Kimi Räikkönen is next up then, he moves in to sixth place.
01:20:10Alessi, seventh, he's stopped already.
01:20:13De la Rosa on a two-stopper, I believe will come out eighth.
01:20:16No, Verstappen just pips him through, so de la Rosa ninth.
01:20:20And there are still 12 cars left in the race out of the 22 who started as we lead Canada.
01:20:27We'll be back, of course, for the final stages of the race.
01:22:46The Canadian Grand Prix, lap 55 out of 69.
01:22:51And Ralf Schumacher has not only pegged the lead over his brother Michael,
01:22:56he has increased it to 1 minute 7.7 seconds with a lap of 1 minute 18.4.
01:23:03Mikko Häkkinen is still in third position ahead of David Coulthard,
01:23:08who is closing on his teammate at the rate of about three-tenths of a second.
01:23:11Jarno Trulli in the Jordan is fifth, Kimi Räikkönen is in sixth place.
01:23:15And Räikkönen has this man, Alessi, chasing him down for that final crucial world championship point.
01:23:21But let me just remind you how Ralf Schumacher got ahead.
01:23:24He put in a series of stunning 1 minute 17, setting a new lap record finally of 17.2,
01:23:31taking the best part of a second a lap out of his brother through that stage of the race.
01:23:35Just before his pit stop, they had more fuel on board.
01:23:38Häkkinen cleared Coulthard in the pits.
01:23:40Unscheduled stop, terminal problem for David Coulthard.
01:23:44Yeah, that is an unscheduled stop and a final stop too.
01:23:47This is going to be the first race of the year in which David Coulthard has not scored points.
01:23:51James.
01:23:52It's a burst of flame as he comes down.
01:23:54And the engine, of course, you can see for yourself, has blown up.
01:23:57But he kept it going all the way down the pit lane.
01:23:59I'm looking for trails of oil.
01:24:00Enormous amounts of smoke.
01:24:02But I have to tell you guys, I'm down here in the Williams garage at the moment.
01:24:05And they are so pumped up.
01:24:07I was talking to Patrick Head before this race.
01:24:09He said, we've got to get these boys back into the mentality that we come to a racetrack to win.
01:24:14It's been a few years since we had that mentality.
01:24:16I'm getting them back into thinking that way.
01:24:18And this weekend, we really feel that way.
01:24:20You remember in qualifying, they took the gamble to go with the harder Michelin tyre.
01:24:24They were thinking all weekend about the race, about coming here to get 10 points.
01:24:28And they are all so pumped up.
01:24:30It's incredible.
01:24:31Mighty, mighty tough on David Coulthard.
01:24:33But it's a very rare situation that a Grand Prix driver will go through all 16 or 17 races of the year without a retirement.
01:24:42McLaren and David did a fantastic job to score points in all the first seven races.
01:24:48To win two of them.
01:24:49To finish second in two of them.
01:24:51To be a third and then two fifths.
01:24:54But it's happened.
01:24:55The weakness of some element in the car has shown itself.
01:24:59And out goes David Coulthard.
01:25:02And that means to say that if Michael Schumacher can just finish this race, second or first, and he's second at the moment,
01:25:08he's going massively to increase his already substantial lead over David Coulthard.
01:25:14So Michael Schumacher is now driving for six points, Murray.
01:25:17He's now one and a half seconds a lap slower.
01:25:19I don't know if he's got a problem.
01:25:20He's had some fairly slow laps, especially in the middle sector, maybe just conserving his brakes.
01:25:24He knows that this car of his brother's has been faster pretty much all through the race.
01:25:30When it was up to speed, he knows he can't chase it down.
01:25:33I believe he's driving for those six points.
01:25:35Hakkinen is 28.8 seconds behind Michael Schumacher in third place.
01:25:40So they're truly Raikkonen and Alessi then.
01:25:43Fourth, fifth and sixth, Alessi in the points.
01:25:45Yeah, great news for Prost because Sean Alessi, the veteran, has only scored one point.
01:25:50And Prost have been out of the points for literally years.
01:25:53And it looks as though they're going to get one in this race.
01:25:56But yet again, I have to find superlatives, new superlatives, for this incredible young man, Kimi Raikkonen,
01:26:04who's making his first year appearance in Grand Prix racing.
01:26:08And this is yet another circuit that he's not raced at before, Canada.
01:26:13And here he is going round in the Sauber in fifth position.
01:26:17And it looks as though there's two World Championship points for him.
01:26:20He's already finished in the points twice this year, his first season of Grand Prix racing,
01:26:24in Austria and in Australia.
01:26:28And he is a phenomenon.
01:26:29And I've said it before, I'll say it again.
01:26:31I hope Peter Sauber, for his sake, has got a very binding contract.
01:26:36We've heard a lot about contracts over the last few days.
01:26:38Well, Peter Sauber needs to have one that's made out of titanium and welded shut to keep Kimi Raikkonen
01:26:44because all the top teams will be looking for this young Finn to join them.
01:26:49Lap 59, and you're looking at double World Champion Mikko Häkkinen in the only McLaren still in the race.
01:26:56Third position, potential four World Championship points to double his total so far.
01:27:01The two Schumachers lead, as they have done all through the race,
01:27:04but now it is Ralph ahead of Michael with an ever-increasing gap.
01:27:09It is 12 seconds now.
01:27:11Mikko Häkkinen is closing down very slowly on Michael Schumacher's Ferrari,
01:27:16not nearly fast enough to get second place,
01:27:19unless Michael Schumacher has got quite a major problem that we're not aware of.
01:27:24And Jarno, Trulli and Raikkonen, Jordan and Sauber,
01:27:27head Jean, Alessi and Frost, who is sixth.
01:27:32Jos Verstappen just out of the points, as he has been before this season in the Arrows.
01:27:37And 12 cars, 11 cars following the retirement of David Coulthard are still running.
01:27:43First time then in eight races, no points for Coulthard.
01:27:45His World Championship dream is going up, to a certain extent, in smoke this afternoon.
01:27:50But the season, I guess, is yet young, and it's looking tough.
01:27:53He'll be thankful of one thing, and that's that Michael at the moment is looking like a six-point a day,
01:27:58and not a ten-point a day.
01:28:00But Williams has not been the most reliable car on the racetrack, Murray, through this season.
01:28:04Even Sir Frank was moved to have a bit of an open moan about that earlier on in the weekend.
01:28:11But right now, Ralph is the class of the field. We're going to take a short break.
01:30:11Lap 61, completing now, into lap 62, up to turn one, then turn two, goes Ralph Schumacher,
01:30:38who is pulling away from his brother Michael, who has very clearly decided to settle for six World Championship points
01:30:46for second place in the Ferrari.
01:30:49And provided the Williams reliability problems, of which they've had many during this season, do not strike again,
01:30:56it looks as though Ralph is in for a second superb victory this year, a second career victory for the Germans.
01:31:04It's strange, isn't it? You see that happen so often.
01:31:06He waited 70-odd races to be able to win a Grand Prix, and all of a sudden he's looking at his second one virtually immediately.
01:31:14It so often happens that you break through into a whole new level of performance,
01:31:18and we've certainly seen that from Ralph this afternoon.
01:31:21And that Arrows of Verstappen is about to lose its brakes.
01:31:24If I were you, Jos, I think I'd park that, because the front left brake disc has worn virtually through.
01:31:31I'd imagine the... I'm guessing here a bit, I'd imagine his brake pads are just about touching in the middle right now.
01:31:37Yeah, it was just here that literally Heinz-Harald Kroetsen had a brake disc explode on him in the Jordan in the past
01:31:45and went out of the race in a very strong position.
01:31:48He won! Place one is the board that Ralph Schumacher sees as he rockets past the garages and into another lap.
01:31:58This is his third lap. They're resting in the Williams garage now. There's nothing they could do.
01:32:04Ralph Schumacher is consistently increasing his lead over his brother.
01:32:08It's now nearly 16 seconds. Mika Häkkinen in third place is not catching Michael Schumacher.
01:32:15Jarno Trulli, who is fourth, is not catching Mika Häkkinen.
01:32:18But Kimi Räikkönen and John Alessi, as they are forcing each other, are closing up on Jarno Trulli.
01:32:24The gap is only about five seconds between the Sauber fifth and the Jordan fourth.
01:32:30Yeah, Alessi putting pressure on Räikkönen. Fifth place man Räikkönen, sixth place man Alessi.
01:32:35And I'd imagine Kimi Räikkönen is another man with a soggy brake pedal.
01:32:38We've seen clouds of black smoke pouring off of his Sauber under braking since virtually the beginning of the race.
01:32:44You start to get a very long pedal towards the end, which does not inspire confidence when you're trying to lose something like 150 miles an hour in 100 meters or so.
01:32:54And Räikkönen then, really the only race left on the racetrack is Räikkönen fifth, Alessi sixth.
01:33:011.7 seconds apart the lap before. Now just nine tenths of a second apart.
01:33:06You're not watching it. That's Häkkönen, of course, in an easy third place.
01:33:1028 seconds behind Schumacher, 27 seconds ahead of Räikkönen.
01:33:14So what does this mean in terms of the World Championship drivers and constructors?
01:33:19It means that Michael Schumacher on six World Championship points as you look at Räikkönen closing up on the Jordan.
01:33:27It means that Michael Schumacher, oh, going past the Jordan, going past Jarno Trulli and up into fourth position.
01:33:35So here's Jarno Trulli at the chicane, taking a wider line.
01:33:39Kimi Räikkönen tucks it in tight and rockets past the Jordan to increase his position, prove his position up into fourth place.
01:33:47Terrific!
01:33:48Trulli's got a brake problem, I believe. Trulli then very slow in the last sector of the last lap and the first sector.
01:33:56And there he is cruising. Jarno Trulli, I believe, probably running out of brakes.
01:34:02As Frentzen did in the Jordan, as I was talking earlier, not this year, previous year.
01:34:07So a bit of a problem for the Jordan team there.
01:34:10And we're on lap 64 out of 69 as Jos Verstappen is coming up now.
01:34:16Look at the arrows in the background. He's currently in, now where is he?
01:34:21He's in seventh, but he's going to move up into the points.
01:34:24When he goes past Jarno Trulli, Jos Verstappen in the arrows and he does it now.
01:34:29He's back in the points where he was earlier in the race.
01:34:33He is on, I remind you, a two-stop strategy.
01:34:36He has stopped twice. He's got his reward. He's only got four laps to go after this one.
01:34:42I hope his left front brake, Verstappen's left front brake will stay the course
01:34:48because that'll be a very well-earned World Championship point there for Verstappen.
01:34:52Running strong in the early stages, albeit on a little bit less fuel load.
01:34:57Verstappen then up into a points position, but we know he must be struggling with brakes.
01:35:02Yeah, and it's lap 65, so 66, 67, 68 and 69 to go.
01:35:10In this long race, which is always so much of a car breaker, always so much of a brake wrecker.
01:35:18And as I said before the race even began, it's a race of attrition.
01:35:2222 started, there are 11 left. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we see a couple of retirements
01:35:28in the very few laps that are left, because as Martin has pointed out,
01:35:32and as you can see from the brake dust that is pouring out from some of these cars,
01:35:37they are right on the ragged limits of brake wear.
01:35:41Ralf Schumacher leads Michael by 18 seconds, leads Mika Häkkinen by 44 seconds,
01:35:47leads Kimi Räikkönen fourth by 71 seconds.
01:35:51Giorna Lacey is only two seconds behind Räikkönen in fifth position.
01:35:56Jos Verstappen is sixth and has been lapped.
01:36:00So it looks to me as though a maximum five cars are going to go the distance.
01:36:05Probably not that.
01:36:07Trulli then in the pit lane. We'll have to wait for confirmation of his problems
01:36:13and the engine seems fine.
01:36:15As I say, I'm pretty sure that's going to be a shortage of brakes.
01:36:18New braking assistant on that car this weekend.
01:36:21Yeah, and Trulli got very air-rated when he lost a potential third place on the grid
01:36:28because he was made to park in the park fairway.
01:36:31He really does seem to have very bad luck, this young Italian.
01:36:34As I said earlier on, he doesn't always, in fact very seldom,
01:36:38get the reward for which his talent entitles him.
01:36:41Looks as though Ralf Schumacher is going to do it though.
01:36:44Winner in Italy, San Marino Grand Prix.
01:36:48He in 1998 was pretty disgruntled in Belgium
01:36:53when he was given team orders to stay behind Damon Hill
01:36:58who gave Jordan their first ever victory
01:37:01with Ralf Schumacher finishing in second place.
01:37:05He goes over the line to complete his 66th lap.
01:37:09So he's just got those three laps now of less than three miles each.
01:37:15Less than nine miles now for a famous victory.
01:37:20A second one for the Williams-BMW-Michelin-Ralf Schumacher partnership.
01:37:26Michael swerving around the plastic bags laying on the racetrack there.
01:37:31Critical if they get in your air intakes.
01:37:33So Michael then just really driving for the six points.
01:37:37Lapping eight tenths slower than his brother, but his brother's cruising as well now.
01:37:41They've been in the 17s, they're now in the 19s and 20s.
01:37:45There's nothing to be gained.
01:37:46Oh, that's Verstappen.
01:37:47That's Verstappen out of the race.
01:37:49It's exactly what you said was going to happen.
01:37:51Great, so you could see it coming.
01:37:53That's going to be a brake failure and it always goes when you most need them.
01:37:57Well, Martin, that means that Jaguar are now on a potential world championship point.
01:38:03The first one in the team for Pedro de la Rosa.
01:38:07Eddie Irvine, of course, finished in third place.
01:38:09And Monaco, and there is the spin that took Jos Verstappen,
01:38:13probably due to a brake failure, out of the race
01:38:16and promoted Pedro de la Rosa to sixth position in the Jaguar
01:38:20for one world championship point.
01:38:22We're on lap 67 now.
01:38:24Coming up to lap 68 as over the grid now
01:38:28goes Ralf Schumacher on his last lap for one.
01:38:32And it's at this point in the race that I always like to give credit
01:38:35not only to the drivers, but some of the other team people.
01:38:39Ralf Schumacher himself, of course.
01:38:41Sir Frank Williams, the great head of Williams Grand Prix Engineering
01:38:46with his long-term partner, Patrick Head, the top of the technical side.
01:38:52Sam Michael, who has done so much.
01:38:54And we mustn't forget BMW, Dr. Mario Tyson, who's done a superb job.
01:38:59Nor Michelin, Pierre Dupasquier, the very wily Frenchman
01:39:04who has brought Michelin back into Grand Prix racing
01:39:07and is about to get his reward.
01:39:09A second victory, which is something I think even Michelin themselves
01:39:14wouldn't expect in their first season of returning to Grand Prix racing.
01:39:18Very, very slow lap for Michael Schumacher last time around.
01:39:21Maybe he's just swanning along.
01:39:23He knows he's easily got second place in the bag.
01:39:27Alessi then is up to fifth.
01:39:29Kimi Raikkonen takes that fourth-place position at the moment.
01:39:34And as you said, Murray, de la Rosa, now you can see him, is in sixth place.
01:39:39So another point for Jaguar.
01:39:41And if he can get over the line.
01:39:43And Ralph Schumacher then commencing what must be his final tour.
01:39:48Yeah, it will only be his third finish of the year 2001.
01:39:54But two of those finishes, assuming he does the last two and a half miles,
01:39:58which he's got now, are going to have been victories.
01:40:01And it looks as though Williams have beaten the reliability problems
01:40:05because, as I said earlier on, the fact that Montoya is out of the race
01:40:09was nothing to do with the car.
01:40:11It was to do with a mistake that he made.
01:40:14It's great to see another constructor at the top.
01:40:18No discredit to Ferrari, no discredit to McLaren.
01:40:21They've both done over the years and are continuing to do
01:40:25an absolutely superlative job.
01:40:27But not many people like to see the same two teams winning all the time.
01:40:31And we're getting some real competition in Formula One now
01:40:35back from Sir Frank Williams' team that has done so much in the past,
01:40:39had great names like Kiki Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell,
01:40:44Damon Hill succeeding.
01:40:46And it looks now as though Ralph Schumacher is going to join
01:40:49that illustrious hall of fame as he enters that long straight
01:40:54for the last time.
01:40:56Comes down to the chicane, second gear, 70 miles an hour on the apex
01:41:01from 205 miles an hour to exit it.
01:41:05And Ralph Schumacher wins the Canadian Grand Prix
01:41:09for Williams, for BMW, for Michelin, and of course for himself.
01:41:14A superb win and another brilliant drive
01:41:19not only by Ralph but by his brother.
01:41:22Brothers are going to finish first and second here at Canada.
01:41:26Still waiting for Michael.
01:41:29He is six world championship points more in this race than David Kulba.
01:41:35He now leads the championship by 18 world championship points.
01:41:41So Michael Schumacher, I don't know what the problem was
01:41:44but he won't be too unhappy.
01:41:47Micah Hakkinen finishes in third place
01:41:50having started eighth and dropped as low as ninth.
01:41:53The problem was Ralph in the Williams was faster
01:41:56We could see that as soon as he could catch Michael easily
01:42:00he couldn't pass him but when he had some clear air
01:42:03he obviously had a lot of fuel in the tank
01:42:05he was able to really put in some stunning Schumacher-esque laps
01:42:09and that launched him into the lead
01:42:11that he was never going to relinquish
01:42:13unless he had some kind of reliability problem.
01:42:15So Hakkinen comes over the line in fourth.
01:42:17Fins third and fourth.
01:42:19Jean Alessi with a strong two points
01:42:21for a very relieved Prost team.
01:42:24Well, De La Rosa, he's already in sixth.
01:42:27He's a lap down.
01:42:28So De La Rosa will not finish the Grand Prix
01:42:31in its full distance
01:42:33and he then gets the final world championship point.
01:42:36Well, ha ha ha
01:42:39a bit of absence to Ralph Schumacher
01:42:43as we leave for a break and we will be back.
