00:00:17Last source, hairpin bend, second gear, 35 miles an hour.
00:00:21And let us hope and pray that there is not a gigantic pile-up
00:00:26after that first corner as there was in 1998
00:00:31when David Coulthard slid sideways on the track on the descent to Eau Rouge
00:00:36and 13 of the 22 cars piled up.
00:00:41Because if there isn't, it's going to be absolutely fabulous
00:00:46because as a result of yesterday's weather, where it started wet for qualifying and then dried out,
00:00:53we've got all sorts of people in places on the grid we don't expect to see them.
00:00:57He's not one of them.
00:00:58Michael Schumacher's third on the grid,
00:01:00behind the superb Juan Pablo Montoya and his brother Michael in the Williams.
00:01:05But you've seen Martin talking to Heinz-Harald Frentzen,
00:01:10fourth on the grid in the Prost.
00:01:12Amazing, amazing.
00:01:14But he's gone very well today in the warm-up, sixth fastest.
00:01:18Micah Hakkanen, seventh on the grid.
00:01:20David Coulthard, ninth on the grid.
00:01:22Down there in 12th position is Kimi Räikkönen, who was third fastest this morning.
00:01:28Knows this Spa circuit very well.
00:01:31Nick Heidfeldt, his teammate in the other SAUBER,
00:01:34who's been doing so well this season, is down in 14th place.
00:01:38And Jarno Trulli, who started second on the grid next to Micah Hakkanen last year,
00:01:45is down in 16th position.
00:01:48So there's going to be some fantastic, we hope,
00:01:51carving through the field by midfield and tail-enders.
00:01:55This is a track where you can overtake, Murray.
00:01:57If you've got some speed through Eau Rouge and get in the slipstream on the long climb up
00:02:01to the Le Combe chicane, you can pass cars here.
00:02:05And also, if you're brave into the bus stop,
00:02:08there's a few tears shed there, usually at some point through the Grand Prix here.
00:02:11What they have to be careful of is that first corner.
00:02:13Everybody concertinas up the inside.
00:02:16You can go down the outside.
00:02:18Occasionally, then, you get caught up in the incident.
00:02:21And often, we have a spinner on the exit,
00:02:22as they're over-anxious to get on the power to get down to Eau Rouge for the first time.
00:02:27I'm assuming, with traction control,
00:02:29we're likely to see less of that this afternoon than we would normally see here.
00:02:34But occasionally, you can also lose the car on the way in there.
00:02:36The momentum starts and you don't collect it up.
00:02:38So it's going to be a strange afternoon, strange qualifying session.
00:02:42Remember, they only had 45 minutes of running yesterday morning before qualifying.
00:02:47That's why it's so topsy-turvy.
00:02:49And we have to assume, as you say, some drivers will be coming through the field.
00:02:53This man, Michael Schumacher, started 16th and won the race,
00:02:57passing 15 others, including myself, with a certain amount of ease.
00:03:01He was stunning that day, absolutely stunning.
00:03:04And I have to say, in this morning's warm-up,
00:03:06he looked more committed, more comfortable than any other driver did Michael Schumacher.
00:03:12Ralph Dent, second on the grid.
00:03:14He will not want to be outperformed again by Montoya this afternoon.
00:03:18No, indeed he won't.
00:03:19And let's just make this point straight away.
00:03:22That BMW engine behind Montoya, sitting in the grid, concentrating there on his start,
00:03:28as Gilles Villeneuve did, that Jack's father, one year, I remember, at Monza.
00:03:34The race was stopped and restarted and he sat in the car for 15 minutes,
00:03:39just looking stoically ahead.
00:03:41Do not break the concentration.
00:03:44Well, it's being broken now.
00:03:46Off come the tyre warmers.
00:03:48Those tyres are too hot to put your hand on now.
00:03:51And they will get hotter still when they get up to race temperature.
00:03:55Not very much hotter, but as much grip as possible.
00:03:58Great unknown this weekend for tyres.
00:04:01Obviously, Montoya starting on used ones.
00:04:03They're very used by the looks of it.
00:04:04I think we could be back into the Michelin scenario,
00:04:08where they're good in the beginning, fade and then come back again
00:04:11once they've cleared the rolled up rubber off the top surface.
00:04:15But they've had so little running, so much of it has been with a drying track or in the rain,
00:04:21that they really, the teams have a lot, lot less data
00:04:25than they would normally like to have going into a Grand Prix.
00:04:29And you can hear the engine revs rising.
00:04:32They rev massively high these days, and away they go for the installation lap.
00:04:38Once again, the BMW Williams team sitting out most of the warm-up, saving their engines.
00:04:44They clearly rev them a lot less in the race than they do in qualifying,
00:04:48so they have less power.
00:04:49And that's why I think they'll not romp away from Michael Schumacher and the others this afternoon.
00:04:55Now, this climb up to Eau Rouge, and they're climbing up from it now,
00:05:01looks quite flat on the television screen, but believe you me, when you come to walk up it, it's very steep indeed.
00:05:07Now, they're going up to Les Combes, which is the right and left hander.
00:05:11At the top of the circuit, they approach that at 205 miles an hour in race conditions.
00:05:17Turn right, turn left, and then start dropping downhill to Rivage, the double right hander.
00:05:24Yes, I can see out of the window, I think one of the Minardis, probably Tarso Marquez, did not get off the line.
00:05:29Alonso, we're hearing it is. Yes, Alonso not getting away initially,
00:05:35but of course those four drivers that failed to qualify yesterday outside the 107% rule
00:05:40have all been allowed to start the Grand Prix.
00:05:43But Alonso with problems already, and we also think that the mechanics were still on the track with 15 seconds to go,
00:05:50and we know from earlier in the year that will mean a penalty.
00:05:54Yeah, and it was David Kilthard that suffered that penalty in the past,
00:05:57and the cars that failed to qualify within the 107% rule were the two Arrows and the two Minardis.
00:06:04But because of the exceptional circumstances due to the weather, they were rightly allowed into the race.
00:06:09So this is coming up to Turn 14, the right hander, where the new part of this brilliant Spa circuit
00:06:16joins the old one, which was just about twice as long and was discontinued because of the problems of weather
00:06:22sometimes being fine at one end of the track and pouring with rain at the other.
00:06:26As we ride with Heinz-Harald Frentzen in the Prost, and I remind you that he is in fourth position on the grid.
00:06:33That's Michael Schumacher ahead of him, led by the two Williams BMWs as they come into the bus stop.
00:06:40And that is a left, right, right, left. Very, very slow indeed.
00:06:45Not as slow as the last source have been, the first corner on the circuit.
00:06:49And this is where Montoya will, I'm sure, start to slow down and let the rest of the grid assemble behind him
00:06:57so that he spends the minimum time possible on the line and thereby risk burning out his clutch.
00:07:05So that's Pedro de la Rosa, Olivier Panis, Kimi Räikkönen, the rest of them pouring through,
00:07:10Jenson Button in the Benetton, Jarno Trulli well down on the grid because he's down in 16th position,
00:07:18and Eddie Irvine only 17th in the Jaguar.
00:07:21They're not expecting to do well here. This circuit doesn't suit them all that well.
00:07:25We're with Heinz-Harald Frentzen on the line.
00:07:28Slightly difficult start. It does incline backwards and you have to be careful not to let your car roll here.
00:07:35So they'll be using hand clutches, left foot gently on that brake pedal,
00:07:39and something around 10,000, 10,500 rpm, but not yet.
00:07:44Not until those famous lights start to appear.
00:07:47Cross your fingers and join with me. Let's hope that there's not a pile-up after Turn 1.
00:07:53Car stalled. Car stalled. It's Frentzen. Frentzen stalled his engine and he's got to let them...
00:07:58Are they going to abort the start? Yes, they've aborted the start.
00:08:01Charlie Whiting, the race starter, has aborted the start.
00:08:06Well, that's a good thing in many ways, a bad thing in others.
00:08:10It's a very good thing because there's always a danger if you're at the front of the grid.
00:08:14Someone behind will arrive doing 100 miles an hour from the back of the grid to the front and pile into you.
00:08:21You remember when Schumacher and Berti had that problem earlier this season?
00:08:26Well, race stopped, you see, but it never actually started.
00:08:30Frentzen will not then start from P4. He will start from the back of the grid.
00:08:36I do not believe they'll refuel the cars. They will reduce the race by one lap.
00:08:41If a driver clearly demonstrates he stalled the engine before they hit the start procedure, the final part of it,
00:08:48then they will always abandon the start, especially if the car is near the front.
00:08:52An electronics glitch, question mark, or a Frentzen glitch?
00:08:56Who knows, but you've got to assume that he pulled for first gear and either didn't have enough revs on
00:09:04or the clutch was still dragging a little bit.
00:09:06Remember, Frentzen was always seeming to have problems with the Jordan 2.
00:09:10It seems like he doesn't like these launch control systems much.
00:09:14Terrible luck for him because he worked so hard yesterday to get into that totally exceptional fourth position on the grid.
00:09:22Where would I have expected him to start in the Prost?
00:09:25Well, to be honest, I think about 14th on the grid.
00:09:28This, after all, is only the second race that the German has driven for the French team in
00:09:33after having been fired by Eddie Jordan from his team.
00:09:37So we immediately go into a restart procedure here and we'll have a look and see how many minutes they apply to that.
00:09:43Normally, it's a 10-minute procedure and we're understanding the restart is 9 minutes past the hour.
00:09:51That's 9 minutes past 2 and we'll take this opportunity for a short break.
00:10:38The restart begins.
00:10:42So just under 3 minutes time.
00:10:44I fear that Anton Frentzen has to start for that, which is such a shame.
00:10:49He did so well to put a 4th on the grid and all that is wasted.
