00:00:00Brazilian Grand Prix live from Sao Paulo only on ITV. Your pit reporters are Louise Goodman and Ted Kravitz
00:00:07Murray Walker isn't with us. It's the first of five races that Murray is missing in his farewell season
00:00:12So alongside Martin Brundle in the commentary box a special welcome to James Allen
00:00:18Well, there's only one place in the world we could be today
00:00:21The crowd have been in here since 7 o'clock this morning banging their drums doing Mexican waves
00:00:27Shouting you name it. It's colorful. It's noisy and like the potent cocktail they serve here called caipirinha
00:00:33It's an assault on all your senses. The crowd's nerves have certainly been tested already
00:00:38Just before the race Rubens Barrichello the race car broke on his formation lap
00:00:43He had to run back to the pits and made it out just 30 seconds before the pit lane exit closed in the spare car
00:00:51Great deal of work going on on the grid on Rubens's car as we speak
00:00:55The mechanics will have to clear the grid shortly though. We've got three minutes and 40 seconds until we get going with this Brazilian Grand Prix, so
00:01:04What kind of race is in prospect?
00:01:06Well, the first thing you need to know is that just one tenth of a second separates second and sixth on the grid
00:01:12Yes, folks. It's that close
00:01:15The second thing is that it's Williams and not McLaren who are posing the biggest threat to Ferrari here today Ralph Schumacher
00:01:21Lining up alongside his brother just a few moments ago
00:01:24We saw Ralph and Michael shaking hands on the grid wishing each other luck tremendous amount of brotherly spirit between these two
00:01:31But they have had their run-ins in the past. I think back to Nürburgring in
00:01:361997 Ralph took Michael out at the start into the first corner by mistake as we
00:01:42Three minutes now until the formation lap he took him out by mistake
00:01:45And in fact that probably ended Michael's chances of winning the 97 World Championship
00:01:49Certainly put him on the back foot and gave the advantage to Villeneuve
00:01:53Ralph told a very amusing story yesterday when I caught up with him had a chat apparently when they used to cart race against each
00:01:58other
00:01:59Michael would specialize and getting very close up behind Ralph if he was leading and pulling off his exhaust pipe
00:02:05Deliberately just to put him out
00:02:08So will they put each other out into the first corner time will tell?
00:02:11But for sure it will not want that kind of embarrassment
00:02:15The manager of both of the two Schumacher brothers and what a wealthy man and what a
00:02:20Perceptive man. He certainly is we heard him say he thought that Michael was the favorite today
00:02:25That's certainly the way that most of us here in Sao Paolo at Interlagos in the paddock feel
00:02:30This race should be Michael's unless he has some kind of problem
00:02:33But it really is very very close indeed and you can see on the grid just how close it was in
00:02:38qualifying between p2 and p6 in particular
00:02:41But look the two Jordans are very close as well
00:02:43And then we have the Sauber's going very strongly as well in the top ten
00:02:48one Montoya worth watching out for we heard Mark Blundell in a build-up to the
00:02:52race saying he thought that Williams might try two stops with Montoya and
00:02:58Well, that would certainly be worth watching. It is possible to pass cars. Look at the sweat on Rubens Barrichello's face
00:03:03He really really will be pumped up and you'll be ready for this. Definitely. It'll certainly give him a charge
00:03:09Terribly disappointed he was yesterday to qualify a lowly sixth place a terrible understeer on that Ferrari
00:03:15Whereas Michael Schumacher sailed serenely on but after grabbing his seventh consecutive pole position yesterday
00:03:22Michael said quote this winning streak must end soon. Well, it's a pretty fatalistic words from Michael
00:03:28Will it end here today? Well on paper Martin, you would have to say only a problem would stop him
00:03:34Yes
00:03:34I thought he was tempting fate also in a press release yesterday saying and please have my little brother on the front row
00:03:39We know each other so well, we won't crash together and I think that's very much tempting fate, but clearly I
00:03:45every time I go on that grid it always
00:03:48Surprises me just how steep the hill is that they climb up
00:03:52Just after the start and this grid is in a in a dip in a bolt
00:03:55So you're either rolling downhill or rolling backwards if you're near at the front of the grid and it is a tricky start
00:04:01And you do tend to have a lot of problems and it's impossible for those two brothers to try to choreograph the first corner
00:04:08Especially with hacking and just behind them. It was an excellent gridwalk. You got very close to the tension on Rubens Barrichello
00:04:14What did it feel like down the grid?
00:04:15Well, it was amazingly tense
00:04:18I couldn't believe how calm Rubens was and then having to meet and greet people all at the same time
00:04:23I I mean this this is the day job looks like there's a problem down there for the Jaguar crew as well
00:04:29We are now just 10 seconds away from the green light
00:04:33So that will automatically be a penalty for which ever Jaguar that was I suspect it was Bertie's car and a problem then already
00:04:42The mechanics are now off the track. Of course, they're all they're all standing to the side, but I believe they've made an
00:04:48Irvine actually was on the outside lane and Irvine is the driver of the Jaguar team who's on the outside
00:04:53But anyway, they go off on their formation lap now into the first corner
00:04:58The deceded Oh soul and then the center s everybody's safely away from onto the formation lap
00:05:03I think nobody left behind you can see the mechanics the top of the screen just clearing the grid
00:05:07It's an amazing rush of color everyone sweating and dashing to get back to the pit lanes with all that very heavy fit equipment
00:05:14It's in the drivers hands now only they can decide what happens
00:05:18Mechanics will have a role to play in the pit stops. We might see two from some cars one from others
00:05:23I'll tell you a little later what my feelings on that are
00:05:26Everybody going away on the formation formation that Martin
00:05:30Try to bring your temperatures down a bit
00:05:32They get high sitting just those few seconds on the line
00:05:35And of course they get even higher when you finally get around it takes some 45 seconds for the grid
00:05:40To form up when they get around to the start finish line and a massive temperature there clearly
00:05:45There's only air cooling on them. There's no fans whatsoever
00:05:48so it's an important lap to get those temperatures as low as you can try to get some heat in the brakes and the
00:05:54Tires and generally prepare yourself for what is a pretty tricky start and it all narrows down into a funnel when you get into turn
00:06:02one and
00:06:03Really this track is so dirty around the outside there James. It often causes problems as we know
00:06:08I was interested to hear that
00:06:10Very interested to hear from Micah Hacken and that he thought it was going to rain today
00:06:14Certainly at the moment looking out across the racetrack
00:06:17We've got the city of Sao Paulo third biggest city in the world the largest city in South America bathed in shade
00:06:22We're in the sunshine here
00:06:24there are some clouds in the distance and we're getting word from the pit lane that indeed Eddie Irvine is being investigated by the race stewards, so
00:06:31The mechanics not leaving the grid quite on time and Irvine. He didn't really need any more problems, but he's got some
00:06:37It's quite a short lap here. We know the pole position was a 113.7
00:06:41So they're round and they were still hauling all of the equipment off the line the generators and spare wheels
00:06:47Etc, etc. So a bit touch-and-go here for the mechanics to get out of the way
00:06:52So they're forming up on the grid
00:06:53We heard Mark Blundell talking about the uphill start and you yourself are saying Martin how you get a bit of an idea of the
00:06:59gradient
00:07:00But the TV pictures don't really convey it and particularly the final corner up to the start finish a tremendous hill
00:07:05but everybody forming up on the grid now and
00:07:08Michael Schumacher and his brother Ralph have been sitting there for a good half a minute now the temperatures rising all the time
00:07:14You know the drill folks five lights go on then five lights go off and then we'll be rocking and rolling
00:07:20In Sao Paolo ready
00:07:26Great stop by Schumacher
00:07:30And hacking in a stall from p3
00:07:32Schumacher leads into the first corner great stop by Montoya as well
00:07:35And Ralph and David Coulthard to so those front five and hacking and still on the grid safety car
00:07:40They'll have to put the safety car out. I believe unless they can move that very very quickly
00:07:45They will put the safety car that that is a walled part of the track
00:07:57Ralph Schumacher fallen off the front row back down to fit and look the car is still on the grid
00:08:03They will have to put the safety car very very quickly. They need those double yellows waving
00:08:10Safety car is standing by we're told but no sign of a young the racetrack
00:08:14What a cracking start though by one Montoya in the Williams Ralph Schumacher has dropped down to fifth place and look at Michael
00:08:20Streaking away David Coulthard looking very racy in third place. Yano truly got away
00:08:25Well safety car deployed safety car deployed
00:08:28So James there the problem is the safety car cannot pick up the cars before they come over the start finish line
00:08:34There's the board. There's the wave yellows
00:08:36This is a very very difficult and dangerous situation
00:08:46Cannot pick them up until the pit lane exit and there it is
00:08:50So they will pass the danger zone before the safety car picks them up and they better be watching those flags
00:08:55And they are indeed all drivers slowing down very sensibly down the pit straight very critical situation
00:09:02They all have radios all the teams will be in radio contact with the drivers
00:09:05You can see how close it would have been. He's right on the racing line
00:09:09I think a hack in and I'm very surprised they've taken this long to move it
00:09:12It's over two minutes since he stole that car and normally you engage it into neutral and roll it back off the grid
00:09:18But obviously some kind of problem for hacking them with the gearbox couldn't get the thing into neutral
00:09:22So now we've got a period of consolidation here. I'll just clear this car off the track. It won't be very long
00:09:30Before the safety car comes in off the track
00:09:32In fact, it may be as little as one lap because we want to go racing here in into Lagos
00:09:37The McLaren now has been pushed off the racetrack and safety car will be coming straight in
00:09:43So it's going to be green flag more or less straight away
00:09:45You can see the lights will go out on the safety car and we'll be racing again and watch Montoya
00:09:50He's going to be right behind the Ferrari with Ted Kravitz. What can you tell us? Well James?
00:09:55I'm actually at the front of the McLaren garage
00:09:57Mika Hakkinen just having a word with engine boss Mario Illion as he came as he comes in
00:10:01I can tell you Ron Dennis and Norbert Haug were watching the same pictures you were watching and as soon as it happened
00:10:06They just put their hands to the heavens. They look absolutely gutted. Thank you, Ted. We're just looking to replay Martin
00:10:12Brilliant driving from all of the field. He was third on the grid. So brilliant driving from 19 other there
00:10:18He is waving his arms already. It was probably too late for the start to be
00:10:23Aborted and nobody nobody even touched that McLaren and that is a miracle that on the start or at the end of the first lap
00:10:31That could have been a mother and father of a shot. The yellow flag is waving
00:10:34you can see the other side of the blue bridge there, but
00:10:38Once that computer procedure started it and is really in the final throes of getting the cars away
00:10:48Michael Schumacher leading the way as they come up the long hills across the start finish line and look at one Montoya
00:10:55He's looking very racy indeed already trying to charge down the inside of Michael Schumacher
00:10:59This is what we were promised when Montoya came into Formula One a feisty aggressive racer
00:11:04And we've got it Montoya leads and into Lagos Michael Schumacher second David Coulthard third
00:11:10Fantastic. Well, there's a warning shot isn't there already for Michael Schumacher Montoya is well known to be very good and very aggressive in traffic
00:11:17Oh, and that's Barrichello. That's finished his afternoon off hasn't it. He's hit Ralf Schumacher up the back
00:11:23Rubens Barrichello trying to be a bit too aggressive
00:11:25Into late descent and what a dramatic start to this Brazilian Grand Prix
00:11:30Unbelievable incident from start to finish Rubens race car, of course packed up on the formation lap. Take us through it Martin
00:11:36Yeah, we'll look at Barrichello steaming in very late behind and just missed his breaking point really Ralph quite cautious
00:11:42That's the second time this year that somebody has run into the back of Ralph
00:11:46We saw her of course in we saw it with Villeneuve in Melbourne
00:11:51It just seems as if Barrichello was unsighted Ralph they're having to watch the Jordan the rear wing go
00:11:56So Ralph is out of the race. That's a one-hour job to fix that at least
00:12:00It's spotting with rain. We had there's a lot of debris down then at turn four already and
00:12:07Barrichello what an afternoon he's having an incredible time
00:12:09Of course, he'd set the fastest first sector time not surprisingly just before he did that
00:12:14He really had the bit between his teeth the local hero, but Montoya is still leading this motor race Michael Schumacher is second
00:12:20Gouffard third truly fourth Frentz and his fifth Villeneuve great effort from him at the start up to sixth place
00:12:26Heidfeld has gone from 10th to 7th
00:12:28Reichen and is right behind him his teammate in the Sauber Eddie Irvine who's under investigation for problems at the start is in ninth place
00:12:35Lacey has made a great move up at the 10th place. And of course, we've lost Ralph Schumacher
00:12:39We've lost Rubens Barrichello already. So Montoya leading and Hakanen, of course Hakanen stalling on the line
00:12:45He's got one point then from the first three races Mika Hakanen
00:12:49Take the spare car and restart this car Ralph has made it back to the pits, but
00:12:55That's a good one our job to fix that because the undertray the rear of the undertow be broken as well and
00:13:01Montoya now having a Schumacher closing up and well, what a sensational move that was from Montoya
00:13:06We all expect him to pull those kind of strokes, but the first chance he got in his Grand Prix career
00:13:12He sticks one up the inside of Michael Schumacher, but it's not all over yet because Michael Schumacher is a pretty feisty character
00:13:18Himself and he's right at the back of Montoya and you can see again the incident Barrichello running into the back around Schumacher
00:13:24That's almost inevitable really with all of that running back to the pits as calm as he looked
00:13:28I'm afraid it is just about impossible to really keep your head straight
00:13:32And well as you as you said James, he went through there. There's a speed trap
00:13:36there is a section time there and
00:13:39He was about half a second faster down to that fourth corner than anybody else
00:13:43I think Ruben's really unsighted and breaking way way too late and now look at Schumacher homing in on Montoya
00:13:49But we know that that BMW Williams
00:13:52Has easily been the fastest car down the straight
00:13:54Absolutely
00:13:55All weekend by some four to five kilometres per hour
00:13:57So Michael's got his hands full
00:13:59The man sitting pretty really is Coulthard
00:14:01Yeah Coulthard looking very good at the moment
00:14:03Just keeping a watching brief on the top two and as you say Martin that BMW engine revving to 18,000 rpm now the highest revving engine
00:14:11They're talking about well over 800 horsepower
00:14:13And BMW in only their second year of Formula One competition after a multi-year break going back to the mid-1980s
00:14:20What a fantastic package
00:14:21This is only their 20th Grand Prix start of their second time in Formula One and they're looking very strong indeed now
00:14:27They're running roughly the same sort of wing angles from what I could see down on the looking at the pictures on the grid
00:14:32It's going to be very difficult because that Williams is very
00:14:35Aerodynamically efficient in a straight line the air passes underneath it over the top of it. They've got some great modification
00:14:41on the car this weekend which have allowed
00:14:43Montoya and Ralf Schumacher to be so fast
00:14:45and Michael Schumacher has a
00:14:47Terrifically efficient race car too
00:14:49But he has not got the straight line speed
00:14:51How does he pass this mercurial
00:14:5325 year old Colombian
00:14:55A man who came over from America
00:14:57And absolutely extraordinary
00:14:59Performance already whatever happens now
00:15:01There's a good chance of points today for Montoya
00:15:03It's not just about going for glory
00:15:05He can really make his mark on Formula One today
00:15:07Back in and out
00:15:09And his team mate Ralf Schumacher out
00:15:11So Montoya leading
00:15:13By 4 tenths of a second from Michael Schumacher
00:15:15Coulthard still third
00:15:17Trulli fourth, Franssen fifth, Villeneuve sixth
00:15:19Heidfeld seventh, Räikkönen eighth
00:15:21Irvine ninth, Valaci tenth
00:15:23There's the confirmation of the
00:15:2510 second stop and go penalty for
00:15:27Eddie Irvine and a big lock up
00:15:29There into turn seven
00:15:31It's not a major problem
00:15:33He has a lock down the inside Michael Schumacher very close
00:15:35He lost momentum there Montoya
00:15:37He did lose a lot of momentum
00:15:39Michael certainly having a good look on this twisty section
00:15:41Yeah he'll never get through there though James
00:15:43Never in a month the Sundays
00:15:45But at least it's showing just how hard
00:15:47Montoya is having to fight to stay ahead
00:15:49And Michael too is giving it plenty
00:15:51And back end stepping up
00:15:53And this is the problem Michael's got
00:15:55Montoya is faster down the straight
00:15:57And here we go with a replay of that
00:15:59Very very brave first corner move there
00:16:01Michael of course is up for a championship
00:16:03He's got more to lose than Montoya
00:16:05And that was a real racers move
00:16:07Fantastic move by Juan Montoya
00:16:09We saw in America a couple of years ago
00:16:11He put an incredible move on
00:16:13Well he put lots of incredible moves on a lot of people
00:16:15Juan Montoya to win the IndyCar championship
00:16:17And he's done it again to the best driver in Formula 1
00:16:19He said he was going to do this
00:16:21And he's now leading on lap six
00:16:23Of this 71 lap Grand Prix
00:16:25As Eddie Irvine comes in to serve
00:16:27His 10 second stop and go penalty
00:16:29That's going to lose him about 32 seconds of race time
00:16:31And drop him way way down
00:16:33He was in 9th place
00:16:35He's going to be about 19th or 20th when he rejoins
00:16:39Yes and Irvine
00:16:41Just to remind you has been penalised
00:16:43Because his mechanics were still on the racetrack
00:16:4511 seconds before the
00:16:47Green light to go on the reconnaissance lap
00:16:49Before the start proper
00:16:51So a penalty
00:16:53That's one we've seen applied three times now
00:16:55And it's caught Eddie Irvine out
00:16:57Certainly very hot on it this season
00:16:59They don't want anyone getting hurt
00:17:01Mechanics on the grid
00:17:03We've seen it in the past
00:17:05People have been hit run into by other cars
00:17:07And Montoya then fastest first sector for him
00:17:09And remember how hard he was pushing yesterday
00:17:11And qualifying he flew off on his first flying lap
00:17:13He's pushing just as hard today
00:17:15And keeping it on the road
00:17:17It's lovely to see a non-McLaren or Ferrari
00:17:19Leading the early stages of a Grand Prix
00:17:21Truly led for one lap in Sepang
00:17:23With all of the carnage and chaos going on
00:17:25When it started to rain
00:17:27And several of the teams are expecting
00:17:29And that's 6th back to 5th
00:17:31We've just lost those pictures
00:17:33He's going for 5th place
00:17:35I think and he looks like he's made it
00:17:37But Frentzen fighting back as well
00:17:39And Frentzen retains that 5th place
00:17:41From Villeneuve but a terrific fight
00:17:43Indeed between those two
00:17:45There's great battles all the way through the field
00:17:47Those two having a great scrap
00:17:49Also having a fantastic scrap
00:17:51Are Heidfeld and Räikkönen
00:17:53Montoya then James a 17.7
00:17:55He's actually just edging away
00:17:57From the lead over Michael
00:17:59If you watch him at the end of the pit straight
00:18:01He's definitely pulling out several yards
00:18:03On the Ferrari
00:18:05So unless Montoya makes a mistake
00:18:07I don't see where Michael's going to pass
00:18:28So the pit is
00:18:31Where Michael seems to just get a little bit closer up
00:18:33To Montoya
00:18:35And he's pulling up the hill
00:18:37Where the engine power is all important
00:18:39Martin, this is where Montoya's able to just
00:18:41Give himself that breathing space
00:18:43And let's face it, the best place to pass it into Lagos
00:18:45Is into Turn 1 and you cannot do it
00:18:47Unless you've got the grunt to get you up the hill
00:18:49Well exactly where Montoya passed Michael of course
00:18:51I hope you're hearing us at home
00:18:53Because we've lost an awful lot of electricity, sound
00:18:55And pictures here
00:18:57Up in the commentary box
00:18:59But if you can hear us
00:19:01Then you're shaping up to see a great race
00:19:03Between new boy Montoya
00:19:05And Michael Schumacher
00:19:07We don't know what strategies they're on at the moment
00:19:09They're lapping in the 1.17s
00:19:11So it suggests they've got quite a lot of fuel on board
00:19:13Yeah I would say so
00:19:15Because the pace in qualifying was in the sort of low
00:19:171.14s, 3 tenths of a second
00:19:19For every 10 kilos of fuel you carry
00:19:21Now when you qualify
00:19:23You're looking at something like 80 or 90 kilos of fuel
00:19:25So that's 8 times 0.3
00:19:27That's about 2.4 seconds in total
00:19:29On top of what your qualifying pace was
00:19:31That looks like what we're talking about here
00:19:33For Montoya
00:19:35A huge lock up though for the Colombian
00:19:37It's early days yet
00:19:39That's a replay of the incident just before
00:19:41Where Michael was able just to get alongside
00:19:43Just to have his first proper look
00:19:45But it's pretty much the status quo at the front
00:19:47There's nothing to choose between the two of them
00:19:49And it's a very close race
00:19:51There's nothing to choose between the two of them
00:19:53And a bit further back
00:19:55Coulthard still sitting pretty comfortably
00:19:57Just 1.8 seconds behind
00:19:59Just biding his time in that McLaren
00:20:01It's not quite got the pace of the Ferrari
00:20:03So far throughout the weekend
00:20:05But you never know what could happen with those front two
00:20:07They're both pretty fiery
00:20:09Coulthard though popping in the fastest lap so far
00:20:11A 1.17.744
00:20:13Just 8 seconds behind him
00:20:15Is Jarno Culli in the first of the two Jordans
00:20:17They're running line astern
00:20:19Trying to fight off Fielder
00:20:21As Rubens walks dejectedly
00:20:23For the second time this afternoon
00:20:25Back into the pits
00:20:27And of course the crowd were all shouting Rubino
00:20:29Before they ever went anywhere near the starting grid
00:20:31But what a miserable afternoon for him
00:20:33And I have to say he seems to have had

00:24:09Eddie Irvine, he's really having a terrible season, his second season with the Jaguar team.
00:24:14And only once has he been in the points here in Brazil, back in 1999,
00:24:19as Villeneuve comes coasting at the pit lane.
00:24:21He's got some kind of problem in the British-American Racing Honda.
00:24:24What's the story with Villeneuve? Let's take a look.
00:24:26Shaking his head as he came down the pit lane, slowly, even before the pit lane speed limiter,
00:24:32they're going to change the tires. That's an automatic procedure.
00:24:36The first thing they do is change all four wheels.
00:24:40And then he's away again now.
00:24:42So whether he picked up a puncture or what, I don't know,
00:24:44because quite clearly on lap 12, that is not a sensible place to be stopping.
00:24:49Yes, it certainly looked like he must have had some kind of fairly minor problem, like a puncture,
00:24:53because there was no real checking of the bodywork.
00:24:55What are we looking at here, then?
00:24:57An extreme close-up of car number 6, Montoya, pitching it into one of the corners.
00:25:01They do love their super slow-mos, these Brazilian directors.
00:25:03Well, those of you watching us back in England,
00:25:06we understand you've had a little bit of problem hearing us and seeing us.
00:25:09We're very sorry about that.
00:25:10The power supply here in Brazil apparently has not been all that it might be.
00:25:14But we're certainly with you now, and you're watching a cracking motor race here.
00:25:18There's very much a three-horse race at the front,
00:25:20between Juan Montoya from Colombia, Michael Schumacher from Germany,
00:25:24and David Coulthard from Scotland.
00:25:26And there's very little to choose between the three of them.
00:25:29Coulthard is the fastest man on the racetrack at the moment.
00:25:32And Schumacher, Montoya, it's very, very close indeed between them.
00:25:38So, Montoya leading Michael Schumacher.
00:25:40Coulthard third, Trulli fourth, Krensen fifth, and Panis in sixth place.

00:28:08Lap 15, Interlagos, Brazil.
00:28:10Juan Montoya leads for BMW Williams,
00:28:13just 7 tenths of a second ahead of Michael Schumacher,
00:28:16as Enrique Bernaldi, one of the local drivers here from Curitiba in Brazil,
00:28:20comes into the pit lane in his Arrows.
00:28:22He was lying down in 16th place,
00:28:25and it's been an extremely eventful day here at Interlagos already.
00:28:30We've lost Rubens Barrichello, we've lost Mika Hakkinen,
00:28:32both very early on in the race.
00:28:34Ralf Schumacher was punted up the back by Rubens Barrichello,
00:28:37but he's back in the race having had his rear wing replaced.
00:28:39It's all go here in Sao Paulo,
00:28:42and Montoya keeping Michael Schumacher waiting,
00:28:45holding him behind, and Michael not making too much of an effort at the moment
00:28:48to try and get past him.
00:28:49Coulthard looking very good in third place ahead of Trulli in fourth.
00:28:52Well, we do think if Montoya hadn't have put the car in the wall
00:28:56early on in qualifying yesterday and having to move to the spare car,
00:28:59he could well have been on the front row of the grid.
00:29:01Michael may be sitting there quite comfortably
00:29:04and thinking Montoya will pit earlier than him.
00:29:07May have to go in for fuel earlier than him
00:29:09because Michael seems almost content now to keep that gap
00:29:12at about 7 tenths of a second,
00:29:14just about out of the dirty air
00:29:16behind a very untroubled Montoya.
00:29:20And Coulthard there just sitting, watching and waiting.
00:29:24I think you're absolutely right, Martin.
00:29:26It must be the case, judging by the pace
00:29:29that we've seen from Ferrari in these first three Grand Prixs
00:29:31and indeed Michael Schumacher's qualifying pace yesterday,
00:29:33the only driver to break underneath the 1 minute 14 barrier.
00:29:36He has got a faster race car than Juan Montoya
00:29:39and Montoya was able to get past him on the restart,
00:29:42not like Michael, to be caught napping,
00:29:44but he certainly was caught napping by Montoya.
00:29:46And perhaps, Martin, Montoya's experience from America
00:29:48where they often have safety cars
00:29:50and then they release them afterwards
00:29:52and he's got so much experience
00:29:54of restarting a motor race from behind a safety car
00:29:57that, of course, Michael has no real knowledge of Montoya.
00:29:59He hasn't built up a mental picture in his head yet
00:30:01of what kind of guy Montoya is,
00:30:03but I think today he'll have learned a bit more about him
00:30:05as we go on board with one of the two Saubers.
00:30:07He's got a good picture now of Montoya's mentality,
00:30:10that's for sure.
00:30:12And you're coming into Mergullo
00:30:14and he's fighting the car all the way through.
00:30:16The Sauber probably not working as well as we have seen it,
00:30:19although if that's Heidfeld, he's up in 7th place.
00:30:22It is indeed Heidfeld,
00:30:24so they're fighting the car out there this afternoon.
00:30:26Hot track temperatures.
00:30:28Many of the teams are expecting rain later on this afternoon.
00:30:32I think they were getting conflicting weather reports again,
00:30:35as they did in Sepang,
00:30:37and here we are back up then into Term 1
00:30:39and a bit of action going on ahead.
00:30:41That will be Frentzen and Pannis again.
00:30:45Frentzen and Pannis, the battle for 5th place.
00:30:47Some superb on-board shots there from the car of Nick Heidfeld
00:30:50as he follows that terrific scrap which has been raging now.
00:30:53Olivier Pannis really is going like a train.
00:30:55He started this race in 11th place on the grid
00:30:57and he's now up to 5th.
00:30:59That was Frentzen being passed, funnily enough,
00:31:01by a recovering Ralf Schumacher,
00:31:03so sorry again that we lost pictures and sound earlier on,
00:31:06but Ralf Schumacher, four laps down,
00:31:08and this is just a test session now for him,
00:31:10but he's steeping through the field
00:31:12and past Frentzen very easily.
00:31:14So, amazing drama here
00:31:16as we look at the car of Nick Heidfeld,
00:31:18and you really have to say the Saubers
00:31:20have been going superbly well this weekend.
00:31:22That car designed by Sergio Rinlund,
00:31:24the Argentinian designer,
00:31:25used to work many years for the Brabham team,
00:31:28and Rinlund mysteriously designing this car
00:31:31and then leaving the Sauber team
00:31:32before it was even launched back in February.
00:31:36And Steven Taylor now,
00:31:37the technical director of that Sauber team,
00:31:39an unknown guy came out of McLaren,
00:31:41but here's again Ralf Schumacher making that move
00:31:44and going past Frentzen,
00:31:46trying to presumably unlap himself.
00:31:48Yeah, he's two, four laps down on the race leaders,
00:31:51and he's trying to unlap himself.
00:31:52Yes, that's not for position,
00:31:53that's just Ralf really just getting on with it.
00:31:56Nothing else he can do other than drive his heart out.
00:31:58There's no chance,
00:31:59unless we have one of those very bizarre Grands Prix,
00:32:01and the start of this Grand Prix
00:32:03looks like it could well be that way.
00:32:05There's no chance of him getting a point today.
00:32:08Normally there's at least 10 or 11 finishers,
00:32:11and he's got to be at the back of them
00:32:13having lost so much time
00:32:14while they replace that rear wing.
00:32:16I just hope he doesn't have any suspension damage
00:32:18on that car that lets him down later on.
00:32:20But this is the sister car of Montoya,
00:32:22and still maintaining now a 0.9 second lead,
00:32:25just in the fastest first sector of anybody in this Grand Prix,
00:32:29and Michael can't do anything about it.
00:32:32So there's a huge crowd of Colombians have come down here.
00:32:35This is the closest Grand Prix to their home,
00:32:38of course, here in South America,
00:32:40and they've come out in their droves.
00:32:41They're right in front of us.
00:32:43We're just above the main stand opposite the pit lane,
00:32:45just up on the left of your picture at the moment,
00:32:47and a huge crowd is hacking in their talks to his team boss,
00:32:50Ron Dennis, and says,
00:32:51listen, I've got one point here in the championship.
00:32:53What are we going to do about it?
00:32:55Yeah, and clearly it was when he hooked first gear
00:32:57that the engine stalled.
00:32:59It wasn't the start.
00:33:00He didn't get into the start procedure.
00:33:01Miket already had his arms out of the cockpit
00:33:04before the start proper, as it were.
00:33:07So sometimes if you don't have quite enough revs on,
00:33:10you just hook that gear,
00:33:11the clutch is dragging slightly,
00:33:13the engine dies.
00:33:14These engines have very little inertia and momentum
00:33:16down at the low RPM.
00:33:18They're designed to work up at 17,500 RPM.
00:33:21Tiny, tiny flywheels.
00:33:23They are so easy to stall.
00:33:25So who is this man that all these Colombians
00:33:27have travelled all this distance to come and see?
00:33:29Well, he's 25 years old.
00:33:31It's his third Grand Prix start only.
00:33:34He was the test driver for the Williams team back in 1998
00:33:37when he also blitzed the Formula 3000 championship.
00:33:40He's a great favourite of Frank Williams
00:33:42and decided to take Ralf Schumacher
00:33:44instead of Montoya a couple of years ago
00:33:46when he was looking for someone to drive alongside Zanardi.
00:33:49And, well, he was a bit peaked,
00:33:51but he went off to America.
00:33:52He raced for Chip Ganassi over there in the Champ Car Series
00:33:55and he won the championship over there first time out
00:33:58and certainly put a lot of people's backs up,
00:34:00at least Michael Andretti, who was the kingpin over there.
00:34:03He put him into the wall fairly early on
00:34:05in his Champ Car experience.
00:34:07It was a marker to him and to everybody else.
00:34:09I'm here, I mean business,
00:34:11and you better pay attention.
00:34:12And here today at São Paulo,
00:34:14he's done the same thing to Michael Schumacher
00:34:16and he has had success here in Brazil.
00:34:19He won the Champ Car race at Rio
00:34:21and he's going very strongly indeed at the moment.
00:34:24I spoke to him, had a long chat with him on Friday
00:34:26and he said that he felt he was just beginning
00:34:28to get on top of these Formula 1 cars now.
00:34:30He said you need to be much more precise
00:34:32with the steering than you do with one of those big,
00:34:34those big heavy Champ Cars.
00:34:36And he said it's taken me time.
00:34:37I feel I am beginning to get there.
00:34:39Well, the proof, as they say, is in the eating.
00:34:41This is another replay then of this time.
00:34:46This was Pannis taking position from Frentzen.
00:34:50That's quite a lot earlier on in the race, actually.
00:34:52So Pannis has been in fifth for some time now.
00:34:54In fact, that's Pannis taking truly, I'm sorry.
00:34:57Pannis then passing truly for fourth place.
00:35:00Pannis, I'm sure, on a two-stop.
00:35:02Yeah, we saw him this morning going very quickly
00:35:04in the warm-up, Olivier Pannis.
00:35:07He was in seventh place, looking very strong indeed.
00:35:09And it seemed clear to me he was running
00:35:11with a lightish fuel load.
00:35:12So he's obviously trying to make up places.
00:35:14You can do that here in Brazil.
00:35:15You can attack.
00:35:16And he's up into fifth place at the moment.
00:35:18We're on lap 20 at the moment.
00:35:19He's going to have to stop.
00:35:20If he is on a two-stop strategy,
00:35:21he's going to have to make a stop sometime
00:35:23in the next three to five laps.
00:35:25And that will drop him down
00:35:26to somewhere around 13th or 14th.
00:35:28Still an awful lot to play.
00:35:29We're also waiting to see exactly what Montoya's going to do
00:35:32as he sets a new fastest lap in a 1.17.132.
00:35:35What's Michael going to do?
00:35:36What's his strategy going to be?
00:35:38At the moment, it's even Stevens at the front.
00:35:40Montoya, Schumacher-Coulthard, lap 21.

00:38:25Lap 23 at Interlagos.
00:38:27You're watching the battle for 10th place
00:38:29between Verstappen, Berti and Fisichella.
00:38:31Montoya still leading the race
00:38:33ahead of Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard.
00:38:35Michael, though, has got a little bit closer.
00:38:37He's nine tenths of a second behind Montoya.
00:38:40Montoya must have made some kind of little slip
00:38:42or possibly outbraked himself into one of the corners there
00:38:44because Michael took half a second out of him that last lap
00:38:47as we look at Jenson Button.
00:38:50Yeah, that's Button being passed by Irvine.
00:38:52Irvine having that stop-and-go earlier on.
00:38:55So they're fighting for 17th and 18th place at the moment.
00:38:59Irvine now taking that 17th place.
00:39:01This is back with the squabble for 10th, 11th and 12th
00:39:04for Verstappen, Berti and Fisichella.
00:39:07Well, we must apologise to you back in the UK
00:39:09and around the world.
00:39:10We've had a few sound problems, we understand.
00:39:12Something to do with power.
00:39:13They're here at the Interlagos Circuit
00:39:15and we're very sorry about that.
00:39:17But we hope you're enjoying this Brazilian Grand Prix
00:39:19as much as Martin and I are
00:39:21because it really is all action throughout the field.
00:39:23And we're just entering now the interesting period
00:39:26when we start to think about pit strategy.
00:39:28And it's certainly going to be very interesting indeed.
00:39:30We expect Panis to be two-stop
00:39:32and we expect him in at some point soon.
00:39:34But what about the front runners and what about these guys?
00:39:37Yes, over here you either walk into sort of cabins and buildings
00:39:40that are, as we watch, the Prost of Alessi in the pits.
00:39:45But you're either walking into cabins that are fully electrified
00:39:49or there's no electricity whatsoever.
00:39:51But Alessi then in the first lap, 24,
00:39:54that will be a scheduled stop for Alessi.
00:39:56He clearly then on a two-stop.
00:39:58And we're just about in that zone now.
00:40:00It'll be interesting to see which of the front runners
00:40:02has to come in and have a look.
00:40:03And Berti then with a very, very good slipstream.
00:40:06That's not a long straight on the way into Turn 4
00:40:08and it's very slippery at the inside
00:40:10if you decide to have a big dive.
00:40:12Alessi then bang on target for a two-stopper,
00:40:15just as we predicted.
00:40:16But Olivier Panis is the man we've got our eye on,
00:40:18currently running in fourth place.
00:40:20Schumacher in the pit.
00:40:21Michael Schumacher in the pit.
00:40:24He then clearly is on a two-stopper too.
00:40:26So Montoya then has more fuel on board than Schumacher.
00:40:30Possibly, or this may be a tactic by Ross Brawn
00:40:32to just try and do something different.
00:40:34How long is the fuel hose on for?
00:40:379.6 seconds.
00:40:38Interesting. Well, very interesting.
00:40:40That's pretty much a two-stop strategy.
00:40:42It looks to me as though that is what Michael had in mind.
00:40:44And last year he did it.
00:40:46He stopped a little earlier last year.
00:40:48It was lap 20, but of course he made that mercurial start
00:40:50and was definitely keen to put as much space
00:40:52between himself and the McLarens as he could.
00:40:54This year he's unexpectedly found himself
00:40:56behind a Williams BMW.
00:40:58He might have in the back of his mind
00:40:59thought it could be his brother,
00:41:01but it's not his brother.
00:41:02It's one Montoya who was in front of him.
00:41:04And Montoya looking quite strong.
00:41:05How much fuel is in this Williams BMW car?
00:41:08That is the $10 million question
00:41:10here in Interlagos this afternoon
00:41:12as we see Gaston Mazzucani
00:41:14in the second of the two-cross
00:41:15coming in for his first scheduled fuel stop.
00:41:21Montoya then with a 2.9 second lead
00:41:24now over David Coulthard.
00:41:26We'll have to see where Michael Schumacher comes out.
00:41:28He'll be in the pack somewhere, no doubt about it.
00:41:30That's a reasonably long fuel for...
00:41:34That's going to be quite a long middle stint, I'd imagine.
00:41:36And Williams then shaping up to lap the Jaguar.
00:41:40Montoya lapping the Jaguar then of Eddie Irvine.
00:41:44I've got my chart here, Martin,
00:41:45which I normally do before the race.
00:41:47And I reckon that's 60 kilos of fuel
00:41:49that's gone into Michael's car.
00:41:50So that's good enough to give him about 31 laps.
00:41:55So he can do 31 laps on that fuel,
00:41:57give or take.
00:41:58About 60 kilos of fuel has gone in.
00:42:00Now, I just wonder in the back of my mind
00:42:02whether they're doing some sort of switch here
00:42:04to deliberately put Michael out of sequence with Montoya,
00:42:06perhaps to give Montoya a...
00:42:08I don't know, just to mess around with his head.
00:42:10No, I think they'll be looking at the traffic
00:42:12further down the field
00:42:13and they'll have worked out where Michael will feed back in
00:42:16and hope he has a bit of clear space and clear air then
00:42:19to pump his famous mid-race lap times in
00:42:23and leapfrog Montoya somewhere.
00:42:25But if Montoya's on a one-stopper,
00:42:27that's not going to work.
00:42:28Let's listen to his technique.
00:42:33Great caution through there.
00:42:34That is where he flew off the road yesterday.
00:42:38Very calm, isn't he?
00:42:39I mean, a little bit of oversteer.
00:42:40I noticed that several times when we've gone on board with Montoya.
00:42:43He applies the throttle very, very aggressively.
00:42:46I think that's still from the IndyCar days
00:42:48of a bit of turbo lag,
00:42:49but he gets away with it now.
00:42:52But he's been very, very aggressive on the throttle.
00:42:54Now he brakes about 90 metres before the corner
00:42:57and he's got to shed 130 miles an hour in that time.
00:43:00And off board now and he's screaming through Turn 3.
00:43:03So, David Coulthard now in second place.
00:43:05Mika Hakkinen out of the race
00:43:07and down in the McLaren garage is Ted Kravitz.
00:43:09As I can tell you, there were some surprised looks
00:43:11on the McLaren mechanics' faces
00:43:13when Michael came in for that stop.
00:43:15I'm pretty sure DC's just on the one-stopper.
00:43:17The whole of this pit is really willing David Coulthard on.
00:43:21He's equal second in the championship.
00:43:23And of course now with Rubens and Mika out,
00:43:25he's got a great opportunity to extend his points.
00:43:28And Montoya and the Schumacher battling his only helping Coulthard.
00:43:32Thank you for that, Ted.
00:43:33While you were talking there,
00:43:34we saw Michael Schumacher just making a move on the Jordans.
00:43:37And it looked pretty easy to me, Martin.
00:43:39Considering how much fuel, of course, Michael's got on board.
00:43:43We know he's just been in for a tankful.
00:43:44Of course, he is on fresh tyres,
00:43:46but we've seen a lot of cars pass the Jordans
00:43:49in a straight line this afternoon.
00:43:50They must be running a lot of wing and a lot of fuel.
00:43:53They could be fuelled up over 100 kilos
00:43:55to go a very, very long one-stopper.
00:43:58But Michael then immediately back up into fifth place.
00:44:01And BAR are getting ready for a pit stop.
00:44:03Is it going to be Olivier Pannis or is it going to be Jacques Villeneuve?
00:44:07We've seen Villeneuve in already,
00:44:08as we see here the Williams of Montoya
00:44:11lapping the Minardi into Turn 1.
00:44:14And we expected to see Pannis coming in.
00:44:17He is third at the moment.
00:44:18And of course, this has always been a great circuit for Olivier Pannis.
00:44:21He finished on the podium here back in 1997
00:44:24when he was racing for the Prost team.
00:44:25Put on a spectacular performance that day.
00:44:27On a one-stop strategy today.
00:44:29It looks like he's on a two.
00:44:30As we see again, Michael making the move.
00:44:32Yeah, easy for Michael.
00:44:33He had the line and just moved to the outside
00:44:36to put the Frighteners on Frentzen.
00:44:38But Michael already then the fastest man in the mid-sector.
00:44:41And this could be a 10, 12-lap storm
00:44:45for Michael to try to leapfrog Matt Williams.
00:44:47Looks like it.
00:44:48Here's the BAR in the pits.
00:44:49Which one is it?
00:44:51It looks like it's Pannis.
00:44:52It is indeed.
00:44:538.4.
00:44:54Bang on schedule.
00:44:55A little bit late indeed coming in on lap 28 for a two-stopper.
00:44:58But short-fuelled it.
00:44:59So he's obviously going to sprint now this next segment.
00:45:01And keep your eyes on Olivier Pannis, folks.
00:45:03Because there's an awful lot more to come from him.
00:45:05And in the battle, of course,
00:45:06a terrific battle raging between BAR and the Jordan team.
00:45:10Both powered by the Honda engines.
00:45:12Currently it's honours to BAR.
00:45:14They're looking pretty strong.
00:45:15Although that stop will have promoted Trulli now.
00:45:19So Trulli will be in front of the first of the BARs.
00:45:22But look at this slide.
00:45:23Big, big slide there from in turn 7.
00:45:26He hooked the right front on the kerb.
00:45:28And it tends to pluck the car in sometimes.
00:45:31And Montoya is still pushing hard.
00:45:33But I tell you what.
00:45:34If he goes to about lap 35 here, you know,
00:45:37that's going to shock an awful lot of people in the Formula 1 pit lane
00:45:40if that's on a one-stop fuel.
00:45:42And easily matching Michael Schumacher's pace.
00:45:45And Coulthard had a slow lap the last time around.
00:45:48I'm assuming that's Button coming in the pits
00:45:50for his first stop of the afternoon.
00:45:52I'm assuming Coulthard must have met some traffic
00:45:54because his pace down to turn 3 is back on schedule.
00:45:58Wretched afternoon once again for Jenson Button.
00:46:01Twice this weekend he's been bottom of the timesheets.
00:46:05And what a difference a year makes.
00:46:06Because, of course, 12 months ago
00:46:08he got his first World Championship point.
00:46:10There's a problem here on this stop.
00:46:12It's all over for Jenson Button.
00:46:14As I say, 12 months ago he outqualified Ralf Schumacher.
00:46:17Let's not forget.
00:46:18And got his first World Championship point.
00:46:20This man, though, took his Williams drive.
00:46:22Frank Williams decided to give Montoya his opportunity.
00:46:25Jenson made the switch to Benetton.
00:46:26It's certainly a learning year for him.
00:46:28It's going to be very, very hard work
00:46:30getting this radical new Renault engine up to speed.
00:46:34It's currently about 100 horsepower down on the benchmark engine,
00:46:37which is the BMW, the Mercedes and the Ferrari.
00:46:40And poor old Jenson.
00:46:41A miserable weekend comes to an end.
00:46:43Never got higher than 17th in this race.
00:46:45In fact, he never got higher than 17th
00:46:47in any session of this entire weekend.
00:46:49As the fuel's going down,
00:46:50another new fastest lap of the race then for Montoya.
00:46:53So no drop-off at all from those Michelin tyres.
00:46:56None whatsoever.
00:46:57Just burning the fuel around at 2.5, 3 litres per lap.
00:47:01Enabling just to edge the times down.
00:47:04A good, solid, consistent, professional drive for Montoya.
00:47:08And he looks well under control, doesn't he?
00:47:11Coulthard to his fastest lap of the race so far.
00:47:15Just a tenth of a second slower,
00:47:17but the lead now of Montoya is edged out to 4.2 seconds.
00:47:22Yes, Montoya looking very tidy,
00:47:24very controlled and pushing hard.
00:47:264.2 seconds up on Coulthard.
00:47:28Michael Schumacher, though, back up into third place,
00:47:3130 seconds behind.
00:47:32And, well, one man who's had an eventful afternoon today
00:47:35is Rubens Barrichello.
00:47:36And he's down well with Louise.
00:47:37He has indeed, James Rubens.
00:47:38Probably the biggest racing weekend of your year.
00:47:41It's all gone horribly wrong, hasn't it?
00:47:43Yeah, I mean, it's something that I've been asking myself
00:47:46the last minutes.
00:47:47I mean, why do those things happen?
00:47:49I mean, why?
00:47:50I mean, OK, you have to keep your smiling going.
00:47:53You have to think on the positive side.
00:47:55But in the question of ten minutes,
00:47:58I had probably everything going wrong.
00:48:01I mean, I had the car breaking down on a formation lap.
00:48:04I had to run up here.
00:48:06I had 30 seconds to go to the grid.
00:48:09When I get to the grid, I had to change more.
00:48:12It wasn't my car.
00:48:13I mean, the engineers and the mechanics did a fantastic job
00:48:16for me to feel at least at home.
00:48:18I mean, it wasn't perfect, but it was like that.
00:48:20And then, you know, I really brought my heartbeat
00:48:24from 200 to 80.
00:48:25I was feeling calm.
00:48:26And then on that straight, I was feeling calm on my right side.
00:48:29I knew something was going on in between Ralph
00:48:32and the guy in front.
00:48:33Maybe it was a Jordan.
00:48:34And then all of a sudden, what I saw was a car coming my way
00:48:39and breaking.
00:48:40That's, I mean, it took me so much by surprise.
00:48:43And that's the discussion we had on the briefing
00:48:46the other day.
00:48:47I mean, are you allowed to change so many lines in the course?
00:48:53So it's really bad.
00:48:54Thanks, Rubens.
00:48:55OK, Rubens is live.
00:48:56Well, I can see out of the window here, thunder, lightning,
00:49:00and it is clearly raining in the distance.
00:49:02Whether it's going to get close enough to this racetrack
00:49:04to interrupt this afternoon, I don't know.
00:49:06Certainly many of the teams are expecting it.
00:49:08And that's always a great yahoo, isn't it, when that happens?
00:49:11Well, of course, if it does start to rain,
00:49:13the man that's going to favour is Montoya
00:49:15because he hasn't stopped yet.
00:49:16He looks like he's building up to a stop.
00:49:17Michael, of course, has just been in, and he would be the loser.
00:49:20Let's just recap.
00:49:21Take a couple of seconds out here to just recap
00:49:23and remember exactly what's happened so far
00:49:25in this extraordinary Brazilian Grand Prix.
00:49:28Rubens Barrichello, his race car failed on the parade lap,
00:49:31and he had to run back and get into the spare car.
00:49:34He then smashed into the back of Ralf Schumacher
00:49:36right here at Lake Descent Corner on lap two.
00:49:39That brought out the safety car.
00:49:40It put Rubens out of the race, as we've just heard from Luis,
00:49:43and it put Ralf Schumacher into the pits to put a spare wing on.
00:49:46He's now back in the race, but he's not classified.
00:49:49He's way outside the top 17, four laps down.
00:49:53Juan Montoya then put an incredible move at the restart
00:49:56on Michael Schumacher, the race leader,
00:49:58and he took the lead as Ralf Schumacher takes...
00:50:01Well, he's unlapping himself, actually.
00:50:03It's very confusing watching that, Williams, unlapping itself,
00:50:06because it looks like passes for position.
00:50:07It's not, folks.
00:50:08He's just trying to unlap himself on the Jordan.
00:50:10But Montoya dived down the inside,
00:50:12a very bold move on Michael Schumacher.
00:50:14He took the lead, and he's looked very comfortable ever since.
00:50:17David Coulthard was comfortable in third place.
00:50:19Michael made a surprise pit stop on lap 25,
00:50:23and he's now in third place.
00:50:24So Montoya leads on lap 32 from Coulthard.
00:50:27Michael Schumacher, Trulli, Frentzen, and Heidfeld.
00:50:30Yes, but what's more significant here, James,
00:50:32is that Schumacher's four tenths of a second slower
00:50:35than Montoya and Coulthard.
00:50:37So if he wanted to put a spurt on in the mid sector of this race,
00:50:40it's not paying off at the moment,
00:50:42even though we know he fueled it quite heavily.
00:50:449.6 seconds worth of fuel is quite a lot.
00:50:47A long stint, but it's really not released him.
00:50:50He's not making any ground up.
00:50:52You would expect Montoya, of course, to be fast at this stage,
00:50:55as Rubens Barrichello has a quick word with the Ferrari Team Technical Director,
00:50:58Ross Braun, there, saying,
00:51:00well, listen, let's hope for better luck in San Marino in two weeks' time.
00:51:03A bitterly disappointed Rubens Barrichello.
00:51:06And you would expect Montoya to be quick at this stage,
00:51:08because he's very, very light on fuel now.
00:51:10He's probably down to his last ten kilos of fuel
00:51:12in that Williams BMW car.
00:51:14And Rubens waves to his adoring public.
00:51:17And, of course, Michael Schumacher, as we know,
00:51:19has got at least 60 kilos, or 50 kilos of fuel left in the car.
00:51:22So it is surprising to see exactly how this thing is shaping up.
00:51:26But the question mark, of course, also is,
00:51:28is this the race where Michelin finally prove they are the tyre to have?
00:51:32Because Montoya on the Michelins seems to have the measure of everybody else.
00:51:35News from the pit lane.
00:51:37It's just starting to spit with rain.
00:51:39And we can see the rain out in the distance.
00:51:42Just don't know if it's going to quite make the edge of the circuit.
00:51:45So we could be in for some excitement yet.
00:51:48No doubt about it.
00:51:49Coulthard maintaining that gap now behind Montoya to 4.4 seconds.
00:51:54And you're still watching the squabble there of Verstappen and Fisichella
00:51:58for what is now 9th and 10th place.
00:52:01Well, for those of you who enjoy this kind of tactical battle,
00:52:04you're certainly seeing a fantastic piece of driving,
00:52:07tactical driving today by Juan Montoya and by the Williams team.
00:52:11Sam Michael, of course, is the chief engineer there.
00:52:14He's the man calling the race strategies nowadays at Williams.
00:52:17He's one of the bright young things in the Formula 1 engineering world.
00:52:21He's tipped as being the next Adrian Newey, in fact.
00:52:24That's how highly he's thought of.
00:52:25Was top man at Jordan, but, of course, switched through the winter
00:52:29over to the Williams team.
00:52:30And I was talking to him this weekend, and he certainly is very, very bright lad.
00:52:34And he's got Montoya hooked up.
00:52:35It's working very, very well for him.
00:52:37And he seems to have outthawed even Ross Brawn at this stage.
00:52:41Rejoining the racetrack.
00:52:42We saw him parking up earlier on for what looked like a normal pit stop.
00:52:45Then they pulled it in the garage.
00:52:46They clearly fixed that.
00:52:48And Jenson Button, then, back on the racetrack.
00:52:51He's going to be some four or five laps down, I would guess.
00:52:56So, Juan Montoya leading.
00:52:58And we're just taking a look at a replay as Villeneuve, in 11th place,
00:53:03gets it a little bit wrong and takes to the grass.
00:53:05Having a miserable weekend this weekend.
00:53:07Jacques Villeneuve, 97 Formula 1 World Champion,
00:53:09won here that year at Interlagos, on his way to the World Championship.
00:53:13But this year, he really has been outpaced by his teammate, Olivia Pannis,
00:53:16who's been threatening to get on terms with Villeneuve.
00:53:19But this has been the race where he's done it.
00:53:20Yeah, Pannis has been a match for Villeneuve, no doubt about it.
00:53:23And we saw that kind of pace from Pannis when he was test driver
00:53:26for McLaren last year.
00:53:27But wondered if it would re-translate back into Grands Prix.
00:53:31And it certainly has done so for Villeneuve.
00:53:33The reason he's down in 11th place is he had an early pit stop
00:53:37for what looked like a puncture.
00:53:40Yes, indeed he did.
00:53:41And we understand from the pits that the rain is beginning to fall,
00:53:44just a little bit heavier now.
00:53:46And this, of course, is playing beautifully into the hands of Juan Montoya,
00:53:49because he's certainly into the one-stop pit window.
00:53:51He can come in any time now and fuel it to the finish.
00:53:54And, well, of course, it might stop raining,
00:53:56in which case being on any kind of wet tyres might not be the thing.
00:53:59But this is a very delicate time of the race.
00:54:01You don't want to blink first at this time of the race.
00:54:03No, but they really hope, if it's going to rain,
00:54:05both Montoya and Coulthard need it to rain in the next three or four laps,
00:54:09otherwise they will be making two stops.
00:54:11But as we well know, James, tricky conditions,
00:54:14changeable rainy conditions is Michael Schumacher territory.
00:54:18He's currently 32.8 seconds behind Montoya,
00:54:23because he's on a two-stop strategy.
00:54:25He's had the first of those pit stops.
00:54:27They've both got to pit one more time, of course.
00:54:29So Michael, 32 seconds out of bed.
00:54:31He's got some work to do, has Michael Schumacher.
00:54:33He said before this race,
00:54:36my winning streak must come to an end.
00:54:38It must sooner or later.
00:54:39That is just the way the world works.
00:54:41And, of course, he was tempting fate a little bit.
00:54:44But is this going to be the weekend
00:54:45where not only does his winning streak come to an end,
00:54:48but Juan Montoya's winning streak begins,
00:54:51because this young 25-year-old Colombian
00:54:53has certainly shaken the Formula One establishment
00:54:56to its core with this performance here today.
00:54:59Incredible pace, incredible aggression.
00:55:01And we now know he had a lot of fuel on board
00:55:04when he fought Michael Schumacher,
00:55:06who did not have a lot of fuel on board at the time.
00:55:08Yeah, good point.
00:55:09I mean, he outbraked Michael, didn't he, with that move?
00:55:12And as the pace car released him,
00:55:15he was more ready than anybody else.
00:55:17And he outbraked him with now,
00:55:18we know, another 20, 25 kilos of gas on board.
00:55:22So from 190 miles an hour,
00:55:2425 kilos makes a big difference
00:55:26when you're trying to slow a car down,
00:55:27especially if the tyres are a bit cool.
00:55:29Although, of course, the safety car was out
00:55:31only for effectively two laps of this race,
00:55:35while they cleared Hakkinen's car
00:55:36off of the start-finish line
00:55:38after he stalled whilst engaging first gear.
00:55:41And that is Michael losing time there behind the Prost.
00:55:45Well, they're starting to put their raincoats on
00:55:47in the grandstands in front of us.
00:55:49Some of them have got Colombian flags
00:55:51painted on the back of them.
00:55:52There are wet tyres ready,
00:55:54there are intermediate tyres ready
00:55:55in the pits for the drivers
00:55:57who are going to make their pit stops.
00:55:58It's a very, very nervous, intense time.
00:56:00You don't want to jump too soon,
00:56:02make the wrong decision.
00:56:03When it rains here,
00:56:04it tends to absolutely dump on the track
00:56:06huge amounts of water,
00:56:07but not for necessarily an awfully long time.
00:56:10A little bit like what we saw in Malaysia.
00:56:12Of course, you've got such high track temperatures
00:56:14that it soon burns off, doesn't it?
00:56:16We've got a temperature in air
00:56:17and track temperature out there at the moment
00:56:18of 27 centigrade,
00:56:20so 62% humidity,
00:56:23and the pressure is dropping.
00:56:25926 millibars,
00:56:26we've got a bit of altitude here anyway,
00:56:28but all the signs are
00:56:30that it could well rain,
00:56:32and Michael there...
00:56:34Well, Mick Aikinen told you on the grid
00:56:35he thought it was going to rain.
00:56:36He didn't know that he wouldn't be in the race
00:56:38at the time,
00:56:39but he certainly said he thought it was going to rain,
00:56:40and it looks like it might.
00:56:41For the second Grand Prix in succession,
00:56:43we're heading towards some uncertain times
00:56:45and some uncertain weather,
00:56:47and who is it going to win,
00:56:48play out for?
00:56:49Is it going to play out for Montoya,
00:56:50Coulthard,
00:56:51or Michael Schumacher?
00:56:52As we look at Sauber,
00:56:54Kimi Räikkönen.
00:56:55Yeah, Räikkönen in the pits
00:56:56from 8th place.
00:56:58Another very solid drive from him.
00:57:00Seemed to be an awful long time
00:57:01getting away there,
00:57:02and clearly a one-stopper.
00:57:04That's about right
00:57:05for the amount of fuel to go in,
00:57:06but seemed to be late getting away.
00:57:08But he was on slicks, Martin.
00:57:09Did you see that?
00:57:10He noticed he was on the slick tyre,
00:57:11which is very brave.
00:57:12Well, he couldn't do anything else at this time.
00:57:14There's no water on the track.
00:57:15No option, James.
00:57:16Wet tyres on that track,
00:57:17and you'll be two or three laps...
00:57:18Oh!
00:57:19And that's...
00:57:20It's Montoya!
00:57:21Montoya's out of the motor race!
00:57:22Unbelievable!
00:57:23He's been rammed from behind
00:57:25by one of the back markers.
00:57:26It's the Arrows.
00:57:27It's absolutely incredible.
00:57:29It's Josper Stappen
00:57:30has taken one Montoya
00:57:32out of this motor race.
00:57:33I think it's Montoya, is it?
00:57:34Yes, it is.
00:57:35Oh, my good Lord!
00:57:37What drama here in Sao Paolo.
00:57:39In front of us,
00:57:40they're almost crying.
00:57:41The Colombians,
00:57:42they thought they were going to see
00:57:43a debut Grand Prix win,
00:57:44and you are in big, big trouble
00:57:46from the big Colombian man
00:57:47when he catches up with you.
00:57:49And that was a nasty incident.
00:57:50It's lucky the Arrows didn't fly
00:57:52and start rolling over there.
00:57:54Luckily, the wheel ties
00:57:55keeping his wheel in place there.
00:57:57And let's watch it.
00:57:59He moves out of the way for Montoya,
00:58:01lets Montoya through,
00:58:02and then just runs straight
00:58:03into the back of him.
00:58:04Almost like he got sucked
00:58:06into the braking zone
00:58:07and just misread
00:58:08the whole situation.
00:58:10Wow!
00:58:11What an absolutely incredible development
00:58:13here at Interlagos.
00:58:15One Montoya on his way,
00:58:17looking very strong indeed.
00:58:18And Josper Stappen,
00:58:19having let him come through,
00:58:21has made an absolutely dreadful,
00:58:23dreadful mistake.
00:58:24And he walks away
00:58:25looking very sheepish.
00:58:26Stappen ran over my head there
00:58:28back in 1994,
00:58:29when he got together with Irvine
00:58:31and had a big incident
00:58:33at Turn 4 there.
00:58:35And managing to drive through
00:58:37my cockpit on his way.
00:58:38But that's your new race leader then,
00:58:40David Coulthard.
00:58:41And again,
00:58:42lots of debris and rubbish on the track.
00:58:44You always get a lot of litter over there.
00:58:46There's a big grandstand
00:58:47full of people.
00:58:48And I think just the swirl
00:58:49around this bowl
00:58:50of the air movement,
00:58:51there's always a lot of litter
00:58:53and rubbish
00:58:54and a big bolt of lightning
00:58:56about five miles in the distance
00:58:58just striking the ground here
00:59:00in San Paolo.
00:59:01Speaking of striking the ground,
00:59:02I've no doubt the mechanics down at Williams
00:59:04are doing just that.
00:59:05What's happening, Ted?
00:59:06Yeah, it's terrible.
00:59:07Patrick Head walked off the pit wall
00:59:09with a face like the thunder
00:59:10that we think is about to come,
00:59:12as the McLaren mechanics
00:59:13just take to their pit box.
00:59:14Williams smelt blood.
00:59:15They really smelt their first win
00:59:17since Jack Villeneuve won
00:59:18at the Nürburgring in 1997.
00:59:20And it's been cruelly
00:59:21taken away from them.
00:59:22Thank you, Ted.
00:59:23And look, Heidfeld there
00:59:24trying to get out of the pit stop
00:59:26and the refueler
00:59:27could not get the nozzle out.
00:59:29So, a disastrous pit stop there
00:59:31for Heidfeld,
00:59:32who was in seventh place.
00:59:33But he had something like
00:59:3422 seconds advantage
00:59:36on Fisichella behind him.
00:59:37And here comes Coulthard.
00:59:38Yep, Coulthard into the pit lane now.
00:59:40This is your race leader.
00:59:41Lap 39.
00:59:42He'll fuel it to go to the finish,
00:59:44almost certainly.
00:59:45But the key question is,
00:59:46can he get out in front
00:59:47of Michael Schumacher,
00:59:48who at the end of this lap
00:59:49was 30.3 seconds behind him.
00:59:51And that is almost exactly
00:59:52what you need to make one stop.
00:59:54It's got to be very, very close.
00:59:58A lot of fuel got to go in.
01:00:009.8. Is he going to do it?
01:00:02Down the pit straight.
01:00:03We're looking for Michael Schumacher.
01:00:04Here comes Schumacher.
01:00:05And Schumacher is...
01:00:06No, he's not going to do it.
01:00:07It looks like Coulthard's
01:00:08going to retain the lead.
01:00:09It's a very slow pit exit.
01:00:11I think Coulthard
01:00:12should just stay ahead.
01:00:13He should have two or three
01:00:14seconds in hand.
01:00:15There he is.
01:00:16There he is, yes.
01:00:17He's got to build up to speed.
01:00:18You run around the inside
01:00:19of Turn 3 here.
01:00:20And now David up to speed.
01:00:22And Michael will just
01:00:24pop out behind him.
01:00:25Just working up.
01:00:26But of course,
01:00:27Coulthard, if it doesn't rain,
01:00:28Coulthard does not have to stop
01:00:30again in this race.
01:00:31Michael Schumacher,
01:00:32we're pretty sure, has.
01:00:33Yes, he definitely has to stop again,
01:00:35Martin.
01:00:36No question about that.
01:00:37And this is an incredible
01:00:38turnaround from what we expected
01:00:40in this Brazilian Grand Prix.
01:00:41I can't remember ever seeing
01:00:42a dull Brazilian Grand Prix.
01:00:44It's the kind of place
01:00:45where things happen.
01:00:46And they're certainly
01:00:47happening here today.
01:00:48Coulthard leads on lap 40
01:00:49from Michael Schumacher,
01:00:50Trulli in third,
01:00:51and Frentzen in fourth.
01:00:52Coulthard with a very fat car now.
01:00:54You would expect
01:00:55Michael Schumacher
01:00:56to be able to haul him in
01:00:57quite easily in this phase
01:00:59of the Grand Prix.
01:01:00A lot of understeer there.
01:01:01David struggling to get the car
01:01:03there through turns 7 and 8.
01:01:05A new set of tyres.
01:01:06They're a while before
01:01:07the whole carcass and tread
01:01:09comes up to the operating
01:01:10temperature that you want.
01:01:12And that's why Michael Schumacher
01:01:13can home in on him
01:01:14as they head up
01:01:15towards the start-finish line.
01:01:16But you have to say,
01:01:17the Ferrari,
01:01:18although Michael was on pole,
01:01:19it was a Michael lap.
01:01:21Barrichello was down
01:01:22in 6th place on the grid.
01:01:23The Ferrari has not had
01:01:24anything like the advantage
01:01:26that it showed
01:01:27at the first two Grand Prixs.
01:01:28And we've clearly seen
01:01:29that this afternoon.
01:01:30Coulthard, really,
01:01:31the car bucking around there.
01:01:32What happens is,
01:01:33stick 80, 90 kilos of fuel
01:01:35on board,
01:01:36and the ride height,
01:01:37the rear ride height,
01:01:38it goes down quite a lot.
01:01:39It's 20% of the weight of the car.
01:01:42And then you start
01:01:43hitting the ground hard
01:01:44in those first few laps.
01:01:45And you have to be
01:01:46a little bit weary.
01:01:47It's not a wedding you're at, folks.
01:01:48That's just litter
01:01:49coming out of the grandstands.
01:01:50They've been here
01:01:51since 7 o'clock this morning.
01:01:52They've been going crazy
01:01:53in the sun.
01:01:54They've been eating their crisps
01:01:55and they're now throwing
01:01:56the packets onto the racetrack.
01:01:57And it's quite a dramatic sight.
01:01:58Let's hope none of those
01:01:59go into the radiators
01:02:00of any of these cars
01:02:01because they'll send
01:02:02the temperatures
01:02:03through the roof.
01:02:04But McLaren made some
01:02:05improvements to this car.
01:02:06They worked hard in testing
01:02:07in Barcelona last week.
01:02:08They came here
01:02:09with four different front wings.
01:02:11They've tried them all
01:02:12throughout the weekend.
01:02:13Adrian Newey,
01:02:14the chief designer,
01:02:15the head man
01:02:16in the technical department
01:02:17at McLaren,
01:02:18has been working
01:02:19night and day.
01:02:20He's not here
01:02:21this weekend.
01:02:22He's working so hard
01:02:23on trying to improve
01:02:24this McLaren.
01:02:25He's been flat out
01:02:26trying to just get
01:02:27the more front-end downforce
01:02:28to get this McLaren
01:02:29on terms of Ferrari.
01:02:30At the moment,
01:02:31it looks quite good
01:02:32for McLaren.
01:02:33Now, this is not
01:02:34such a high downforce circuit
01:02:35as some of them.
01:02:36And I think it's more
01:02:37in the zone
01:02:38where the McLaren
01:02:39has been working better anyway.
01:02:40They've been maxed out
01:02:41on their aero settings.
01:02:42I think this circuit
01:02:43definitely played
01:02:44into the McLaren zone.
01:02:45But, uh...
01:02:46Coulthard and...
01:02:47Coulthard and Michael Schumacher
01:02:48have had a few run-ins
01:02:49in the past.
01:02:50It's normally
01:02:51Coulthard trying to pass
01:02:52Michael rather than
01:02:53the other way around,
01:02:54isn't it?
01:02:55But if Michael wants
01:02:56any chance of winning
01:02:57this race,
01:02:58he needs to leapfrog
01:02:59past the McLaren.
01:03:00Haven't seen any signs yet
01:03:01that he's easily got
01:03:02the speed to do that.
01:03:03Yes, Coulthard
01:03:04filling it,
01:03:05fueling it to the finish there.
01:03:06Well over 90 kilos
01:03:07will have gone into that car
01:03:08at the start.
01:03:09Ralf Schumacher
01:03:10pressing on in 15th place
01:03:11to set the fastest lap
01:03:12of the race there.
01:03:13Ralf Schumacher in a
01:03:14115.693.
01:03:15He's going like a rocket,
01:03:16but it's no good to him
01:03:17because he's four laps down.
01:03:18Just trying to prove a point.
01:03:19And that point, I think,
01:03:20is just what Montoya
01:03:21would have been able to do
01:03:22had he not been taken out
01:03:23of this race
01:03:24by Jos Verstappen.
01:03:25The two Jordans
01:03:26running line of stern.
01:03:27We haven't seen much
01:03:28of them this afternoon
01:03:29other than them being
01:03:30passed by other people.
01:03:31They're third and fourth,
01:03:32though.
01:03:33It's playing out for
01:03:34Eddie Jordan.
01:03:35Just celebrated
01:03:36his 53rd birthday
01:03:37a couple of days ago
01:03:38in fantastic style
01:03:39as one of the...
01:03:40Benetton comes in.
01:03:41Fisichella.
01:03:42But at the moment,
01:03:43Eddie Jordan's two cars
01:03:44are running third and fourth,
01:03:45looking reasonably comfortable.
01:03:46Panis is in fifth place.
01:03:47He's on a two-stopper.
01:03:48The two Jordans
01:03:49appear to be on a one-stopper.
01:03:50They've yet to make
01:03:51their stops, I believe.
01:03:52But it's...
01:03:53Well, actually,
01:03:54who's in the fifth
01:03:55there for VAR?
01:03:56Just behind that,
01:03:57Fisichella.
01:03:58It's Villeneuve.
01:03:59Villeneuve again.
01:04:00They've got problems
01:04:01with that car.
01:04:02There's a good scrap.
01:04:03That's a long stop there
01:04:04for Jacques Villeneuve.
01:04:05A good scrap
01:04:06shaping up.
01:04:07Panis in fifth.
01:04:08On a different strategy,
01:04:09but much faster
01:04:10than the two Jordans.
01:04:11And he's just six seconds
01:04:12behind them.
01:04:13One of the Jordans
01:04:14looks like he just came
01:04:15into pit lane.
01:04:16I can tell you
01:04:17it doesn't look
01:04:18as though the mechanics
01:04:19are ready for him.
01:04:20Yes, it's Frentzen.
01:04:21And I'm looking straight out
01:04:22and they were not ready,
01:04:23but they've rushed out
01:04:24all of a sudden.
01:04:25Still taking the blankets
01:04:26off the tyres
01:04:27down there at Jordan.
01:04:28So Frentzen then
01:04:29in for his,
01:04:30what should be
01:04:31his one and only stop
01:04:32of the afternoon,
01:04:33assuming that the rain
01:04:34we can see in the distance
01:04:35doesn't make it
01:04:36to the area
01:04:37of the racetrack.
01:04:38And there's the man
01:04:39with the starter.
01:04:40That's just in case
01:04:41Frentzen stalls the engine.
01:04:42So that's a
01:04:43precautionary thing.
01:04:44Good stop
01:04:45by the Jordan team.
01:04:46Anything under 11 seconds
01:04:47for a one-stop fuel load
01:04:48is pretty good around here.
01:04:49Frentzen back into the race.
01:04:50Was fourth.
01:04:51He'll have dropped down
01:04:52behind Panis now.
01:04:53So Panis gets back
01:04:54up to fourth place.
01:04:55But he will rejoin
01:04:56in front of Heidfeld.
01:04:57So Frentzen
01:04:58down into fifth place.
01:04:59Kulthard leading
01:05:00on lap 43
01:05:01from Michael Schumacher,
01:05:02Trulli, Panis,
01:05:03Frentzen, Heidfeld,
01:05:04Rijkaard,
01:05:05still in seventh place
01:05:06waiting to pick any points up
01:05:07if anybody should drop out.
01:05:08He's only one second
01:05:09behind his teammate
01:05:10Heidfeld
01:05:11having a super race here.
01:05:12The young
01:05:1321-year-old
01:05:14Finnish rookie
01:05:15has only his
01:05:1627th car race ever.
01:05:17And once again
01:05:18he's really on it.
01:05:19Irvine up into eighth
01:05:20despite having
01:05:21a stop-and-go penalty
01:05:22earlier in the race.
01:05:23Alessi ninth
01:05:24and Fisikela tenth
01:05:25for Benetton.
01:05:26So next man to stop
01:05:27must be Jarno Trulli
01:05:28anytime soon.
01:05:29The current
01:05:30third-place man
01:05:31and we believe
01:05:32he's going to be
01:05:33in for his
01:05:34one and only stop
01:05:35from third place.
01:05:36Jarno Trulli
01:05:37the young
01:05:38Italian driver
01:05:39has been very disappointed
01:05:40with his form so far
01:05:41but he's been running
01:05:42very strongly

01:05:45to turn it round.
01:05:46Let's watch his stop
01:05:47see what happens.
01:05:4822 men
01:05:49working on that car.
01:05:50Pretty routine
01:05:51it looks to me.
01:05:52Lots of revs
01:05:53and they can't get
01:05:54the revs to come off.
01:05:55They can't get
01:05:56the revs to come off.
01:05:57They can't get
01:05:58the revs to come off.

01:06:02the revs to come off.
01:06:03Yes, the fuel hose
01:06:04won't come off
01:06:05and Trulli lost
01:06:06a couple of seconds there.
01:06:07That will have cost him dearly
01:06:08and the most incredible
01:06:09bolt of lightning
01:06:10a vertical bolt of lightning
01:06:12just to the right
01:06:13out of our commentary position
01:06:14over the city of Sao Paulo.
01:06:15So, lap 44
01:06:17Coulthard leading
01:06:18from Schumacher
01:06:19Pannis
01:06:20Trulli is fourth
01:06:21Frentzen fifth
01:06:22and Mick Heidfeld

01:17:40We hope still to come.
01:19:4018 laps to go here in this amazing 2001 Brazilian Grand Prix.
01:19:58They call Michael Schumacher the rainmeister, but at the moment he's struggling.
01:20:01And this is Turn 6, Ferradura, Michael getting in too deep, bouncing across the gravel trap,
01:20:06heading for the tyre barrier, but just pulls it around and anytime soon, this is another
01:20:12shot of it, it's a big gravel trap there luckily for him, gets back on the racetrack, and anytime
01:20:16soon you're going to see the Jaguar of Eddie Irvine pointing, and that's Irvine off for
01:20:21yet another time actually, that's a different spin from Irvine, he very nearly collected
01:20:25Michael Schumacher, and this is a Williams of Ralf Schumacher, who's recently just pitted,
01:20:31so everybody going off in 6th and 7th.
01:20:35Brilliant sunshine on the pit straight, lots of water on the racetrack, it must be Brazil,
01:20:40it's a crazy situation.
01:20:41David Coulthard leading on lap 54 from Michael Schumacher now, by 15 seconds following that
01:20:46off-piste excursion by the Ferrari, the reigning championship leader at the moment.
01:20:51Franssen is 3rd, his teammate Trolley is 4th, Nick Heidfeld going strongly for Sauber in
01:20:555th, Alessi looking to get Prost's first points of a 2001 championship, and their first points
01:21:00since 1998.
01:21:01Look at Michael's car control though, well, or absence of it.
01:21:03Yeah, that was a different, yet another overhead angle of that Turn 6 incident, so Michael
01:21:09losing 2 seconds a lap as well actually to Coulthard, Coulthard driving beautifully up
01:21:14front, hoping not pushing too hard in these conditions, but remember, these Inters, Michael
01:21:19went for 30-odd laps on quite a dry track in Sepang, the last Grand Prix, they tend
01:21:24to hang on very well, and I don't see anybody in these remaining 17 laps having to come
01:21:30in and change for slicks, if they chose the Inters, if they chose the full wets, they
01:21:35might be struggling.
01:21:36Coulthard and Schumacher matched for pace, identical lap times the last time through,
01:21:40give or take a thousandth of a second, but Michael 17 seconds behind his adversary, and
01:21:45this race, Martin, would mean a lot to Coulthard, he'd go clearly P2 in the championship, he'd
01:21:50have 16 points, Hakkinen of course still only one championship point, and once again
01:21:55Coulthard having the strongest start to the season, and putting down his credentials to
01:21:59win, to be the point man for McLaren, can he go on and do it, do you think, to be the
01:22:03main advocate?
01:22:04He struggled in qualifying, but he's driven beautifully now for all three of the races,
01:22:08he's not home yet of course, he was actually 2 seconds quicker than Michael on that previous
01:22:12lap, and he really looks like he's got the car underneath him, and as you say, that would
01:22:17put him 19 points ahead of Hakkinen after just three races, which could well play into
01:22:22his hands nicely, but Michael still looking strong, even if he finishes second today of
01:22:26course.
01:22:27Michael looking very strong for the championship, but of course we've seen over the last few
01:22:29years, Coulthard saying over the winter, I want to go for it, I want to be the man who
01:22:33goes for the championship, you can see his car control, it's absolutely fantastic, David
01:22:37Coulthard, he was very strong in the rain at Silverstone a couple of years ago, very
01:22:41very good indeed, made a pass on Michael Schumacher in the wet, he's done it again here today,
01:22:46and well, he's got 16 laps to go, and you're making a face Martin.
01:22:51He's pushing too hard, he's having moments everywhere, he's 18.9 seconds ahead as you
01:22:56say, and he doesn't need to be pushing this hard, but of course, you know, if the track
01:23:00does dry out, he still could have a drag race to the end with Michael Schumacher, but David
01:23:05appears confident, appears to be under control, he's calm, every so often he just gets the
01:23:10tail in, wagging, but Coulthard apparently on his way, and then the car just hooks up
01:23:16and flies through the final part of the lap.
01:23:19Well turned 30 last Tuesday, David Coulthard, so he's now classed as one of the more mature
01:23:24Grand Prix drivers, although anyone who's spent an evening with him would certainly
01:23:27contest that.
01:23:28Never won here in Brazil, but has been a front row starter here the last three years, this
01:23:33year of course it wasn't such a pretty story for him in qualifying, he was down in fifth
01:23:36place, but he looked good from the start, and he's looking very good now in these treacherous
01:23:40conditions, as Matsukane has yet another incident, and it's been an incident packed race, but
01:23:45particularly for Matsukane, he's been all over the place, they're just giving a bit
01:23:49of icing sugar to that car.
01:23:51I wonder if he had an engine failure coming down the pit straight, because that's going
01:23:54to give a few headaches if he did, if there's any oil on the racetrack, but Schumacher's
01:23:59going into that corner now, and appears to have normal levels of grip.
01:24:03Yeah, Schumacher faster on that last lap than David Coulthard, just taking a second
01:24:06back off the Scotsman, and well, as you say, Martin, Coulthard really looking at Livia
01:24:12Panis there in the foreground, Panis has slipped down into sixth place, which has popped Lacey
01:24:17out of the points now, so it doesn't look as though the Prost is going to get a point
01:24:20just at this race, but everybody except Trolley has been lapped, so they've lapped the entire
01:24:26field up to Trolley, that's fourth place.
01:24:29Yes, Panis very unlucky during that stop for tyres, he had to queue up for probably half
01:24:34a minute while they were sorting something out on Villeneuve's car, so Panis was on a
01:24:38strong run, splitting the Jordans earlier on, two Jordans then, still running very strongly
01:24:42in third and fourth together, and who have we got here?
01:24:47That has got to be Raikkonen out of ninth place, so Kimi Raikkonen out of the race,
01:24:53we don't know whether it's a mechanical failure or whether he simply dropped it somewhere,
01:24:57but well into the green fields there, I suspect he spun off somewhere.
01:25:01Gone ten races now, since he last won a Grand Prix, David Coulthard, is this going to be
01:25:06the end of that losing streak?
01:25:08And a big, big moment for Raikkonen.
01:25:11That's the problem around here, James, it's just, you know, the race pattern is just such
01:25:15a mess, and you go off onto what should be a little grassy slide, and the next thing
01:25:18is you're heading into a rollover situation, but Raikkonen then lost it in Turn 5, normally
01:25:24a very easy corner, and Michael very late on the brakes, he's got to get on with it,
01:25:28of course, he is lapping there, yes, he's lapping Panis, so Panis down in sixth place
01:25:37being lapped by Michael Schumacher, and Schumacher's got to now regroup and start attacking Coulthard,
01:25:42he's now 16.7 seconds down, so pulling back, as you say, about a second a lap.
01:25:47Yes, he's got 14 laps in which to do it, and a gap of 16.7 seconds behind, he's made the
01:25:53mistakes this afternoon, Michael Schumacher, this will not go down in his record books
01:25:57as one of his best races, we've got waved yellow flags for the various and sundry cars
01:26:01which are scattered around the fields here at Interlagos, Interlagos means between the
01:26:05lakes, there's been a lake on the racetrack today as well, and some have steered through
01:26:09it better than others, and certainly David Coulthard at the moment, the man with the
01:26:13credentials to claim to be the rainmaster here in Brazil, who's this then, this is Panis
01:26:18making a move on Alessi, that was the move for sixth place which took Panis up there
01:26:22into the points-paying position, of course he finished fourth in Australia and was disqualified
01:26:26or rather he was given a penalty which dropped him down to seventh place, Panis, so these
01:26:30would be his first championship points of the season, and his first championship points
01:26:34since coming back to Formula 1 after a one-year sabbatical as a McLaren tester.
01:26:38Yeah, it's very sweet of Panis and Alessi, they were waving at each other as Panis took
01:26:42away his sixth place.
01:26:44And Coulthard has just put a lap on Jarno Trulli into Turn 1, so David Coulthard going
01:26:49like a train here in Interlagos, putting a move on Trulli, there in a replay, I saw it
01:26:54out of the corner of my eye.
01:26:56And Coulthard then just sweeping out of the tow, gets the right line, there's plenty of
01:26:59grip up the inside, you see the back of that McLaren bouncing around on the bumps, quite
01:27:03stiffly sprung for whatever reason, when it's surprising that he's finding this much grip
01:27:07on the track, and now for sure the water level on the track is definitely intermediate zone
01:27:13and there should not be too many risks out there, but Coulthard last time lost another
01:27:188 tenths of a second to Schumacher, but if he can just keep this sort of pace up and
01:27:23keep this aggression through the backmarkers, he should be okay, but remember what happened
01:27:27to Montoya, minding his own business, and wiped out of the race by a backmarker.
01:27:32Yes, absolutely extraordinary, Josper Stapfer for those of you just joining us, the race
01:27:36leader one Montoya was going along very nicely, having thrown down a gauntlet to all and everybody
01:27:41in Formula 1, having passed Michael Schumacher very dramatically, and as you see Coulthard
01:27:45making progress, putting another lap on Ralf Schumacher, who was also clouted by a backmarker,
01:27:50but Verstappen pulling aside, and Montoya just slipping through, and then obviously
01:27:55Verstappen missed his brake pedal, smashed straight into the back of Montoya, and that
01:27:58was the end of the Colombians' race.
01:28:00So, lap 58, we've got David Coulthard leading by 15.9 seconds, from Frentzen in 3rd place,
01:28:08sorry, Michael Schumacher in 2nd place, Frentzen 3rd, Trulli 4th, Heidfeld 5th, and Olivier
01:28:12Pannis in 6th place.
01:29:08So, we've got David Coulthard leading by 15.9 seconds, from Frentzen in 3rd place,
01:29:13Olivier Pannis in 6th place, Trulli 4th, Heidfeld 5th, and Olivier Pannis in 6th place.
01:29:18So, we've got David Coulthard leading by 15.9 seconds, from Frentzen in 3rd place,
01:29:23Olivier Pannis in 6th place, Trulli 4th, Heidfeld 5th, and Olivier Pannis in 6th place.
01:29:28So, we've got David Coulthard leading by 15.9 seconds, from Frentzen in 3rd place,
01:29:34Olivier Pannis in 6th place, Trulli 4th, and Olivier Pannis in 6th place.
01:29:39So, we've got David Coulthard leading by 15.9 seconds, from Frentzen in 3rd place,
01:29:44Olivier Pannis in 6th place, Trulli 4th, and Olivier Pannis in 6th place.
01:29:49So, we've got David Coulthard leading by 15.9 seconds, from Frentzen in 3rd place,
01:29:54Olivier Pannis in 6th place, Trulli 4th, and Olivier Pannis in 6th place.
01:30:29So, David Coulthard leading the race by 17.5 seconds, from Michael Schumacher.
01:30:34Frentzen is 3rd, and Martin, an incidente.
01:30:37Yes, Ralph going off in exactly the same place as Räikkönen had a couple of laps earlier.
01:30:41Stalls the car, but slides back onto the racetrack.
01:30:45They can't appear to move it out of the way too quickly.
01:30:47Working under waved yellows at the moment, to say.
01:30:50Marshall's on the racetrack.
01:30:52They had got a 4-wheel drive to it, and a tow rope,
01:30:55and I suspect they should clear it without the need for a safety car.
01:30:59But, it's in a very critical position.
01:31:01We've seen Kimi Räikkönen in the Sauber having a spin there.
01:31:04Obviously, there's something either gone down there,
01:31:06or there's a lot of water just on the racing line.
01:31:09It's a dangerous place, but it looks like, fingers crossed, they may well have cleared it.
01:31:12It's Coulthard, you can see him backing right off as he goes through the danger zone,
01:31:16those waved yellow flags.
01:31:17It looks like Ralph's car has been taken away,
01:31:19and Coulthard now, 19.4 seconds clear of Michael Schumacher,
01:31:23who has led this motor race himself.
01:31:25It's been all over the place here in Brazil.
01:31:27Montoya has led, Michael has led, DC, David Coulthard has led as well,
01:31:31and at the moment, he's got P1 on his pit board,
01:31:34and he's got 10 laps to go to try and claim his first race win for 10 Grands Prix,
01:31:39his first of the 2001 season,
01:31:41and a win which would certainly put him very strongly up there in the championship.
01:31:45Yes, Michael appearing now to slow down quite a lot.
01:31:48Don't know why, we haven't seen him for a while on our TV screens,
01:31:51but there he is now, just on cue.
01:31:54But Michael, no apparent problems, but just backing out of it.
01:31:58He was starting to home in on Coulthard at 8 tenths, one second per lap,
01:32:02got the gap down to 15.7.
01:32:04Coulthard picked up his pace,
01:32:06and suddenly Michael's now 19.4 behind last time around.
01:32:11Yes, it's not really been Michael Schumacher's afternoon here today.
01:32:15He's acknowledged as being the king of wet weather, they call him the rain master,
01:32:18but he's made two mistakes here today in the wet,
01:32:21and it's given the opportunity to David Coulthard.
01:32:23We thought Coulthard had blown it when he did an extra lap.
01:32:27As the rain started to fall, everybody dived into the pits,
01:32:30but Coulthard did that one extra lap, he lost about 25 seconds.
01:32:34The race seemed to have gone away from him,
01:32:36but then Michael made two mistakes,
01:32:38and all of a sudden Coulthard was right back in the hunt,
01:32:40and into Turn 1, the one that they've just gone through now.
01:32:43Coulthard made a move on Michael, either side of a back marker.
01:32:46It was pure drama, pure theatre, and it's given him the lead of the race.
01:32:50Well, they'll not need to come in for slicks.
01:32:52I'm sure slicks anytime soon would be faster,
01:32:55and Michael's struggling there to lap the Jordan,
01:32:58and could not make it down the straight to get past the Jordan,
01:33:01which is surprising, and he's not going to yield either,
01:33:04although he is being lapped at this stage.
01:33:07And now he yields. No, he doesn't.
01:33:09No, he's just going on to the wetter part of the track,
01:33:11one of the Jordans we know to be on full wet,
01:33:14but Michael just does not appear to have a lot of speed in that car.
01:33:18It's Trulli, and he's the one who's on the same intermediate tyres as Michael is.
01:33:22That's putting Trulli down. He already was a lap down in 5th place.
01:33:25So Coulthard from Michael Schumacher.
01:33:27Frentzen is 70 seconds behind those two,
01:33:29so they're the only two that can win this race.
01:33:32Frentzen 3rd, Heidfeld is 4th, going very strongly for Sauber,
01:33:36and 5th place Trulli, you've just seen him there being passed by Michael.
01:33:39Pan is 6th, Alessi 7th, Fisichella 8th, having a better day for Benetton.
01:33:43There'll be some smiles for that.
01:33:44And Coulthard moving on to the wet stuff down the straight,
01:33:47and then to start to cool those Intas.
01:33:48Now they're in the zone where they really should be on slicks,
01:33:51but it'll cost them 28 seconds to drop in for a set of slicks,
01:33:55and it just is not worth it.
01:33:57What they've got to do now is try to maintain those intermediate tyres.
01:34:00It'll be a softer rubber, and with the grooves in them,
01:34:03you generate an awful lot more surface temperature,
01:34:05and both anybody out there now on the Intas will be doing exactly the same thing.
01:34:10Yes, these intermediate tyres have gone through an awful lot of testing,
01:34:13and of course we should remember, Martin,
01:34:14that both David Coulthard and Michael Schumacher are on the same Bridgestone tyre,
01:34:18so there's no tyre war going on in this battle here.
01:34:21All of the top three, in fact all of the top six, are all using the Bridgestone tyre.
01:34:26Now I know from talking to the Ferrari people
01:34:28that they did a lot of work on these tyres in Italy in testing.
01:34:31They've got a facility at their test track to completely soak it
01:34:34with hoses and sprinklers and that kind of thing,
01:34:38and they can do whatever they want,
01:34:39and they found on a drying track these intermediate tyres will go on and on and on.
01:34:43We've got just eight laps left in this race.
01:34:45It should be okay, even if a dry line begins to completely appear,
01:34:49but as we just saw there, David Coulthard taking the opportunity
01:34:52to just cool them down, those tyres, to get onto the wet part of the track,
01:34:56give them a bit of what they like, which is water,
01:34:58and just preserve them a little bit more.
01:35:00Yes, 22.9 seconds was his lead last time around,
01:35:04and we haven't seen a mid-section time yet from Schumacher on this current lap.
01:35:09Over the line with a 27.5,
01:35:11and, well, I think he's just going to be screaming away now from Michael Schumacher.
01:35:15Has Schumacher got any kind of problem?
01:35:17Or has Schumacher said second place is good enough for me?
01:35:20It's not really his kind of language, that,
01:35:22but maybe that's what he's done here today, given the circumstances.
01:35:25We've got just seven laps of this Grand Prix left.
01:35:28But, Martin, let's just talk briefly about some of the other people.
01:35:30We haven't really mentioned so much today.
01:35:32There's some interesting points scorers, if things finish the way they are.
01:35:35Heinz-Harald Frentzen, once again,
01:35:37he's been a point scorer in both of the first two races so far this year,
01:35:41and he's been going very, very strongly in both of them.
01:35:45Finished fifth in Australia and fourth in Malaysia.
01:35:47So, once again, Jordan looking quite strong,
01:35:49because Jarno Trulli is in fifth place at the moment,
01:35:51so that'll be two more points for him.
01:35:53And Nick Heidfeld...
01:35:54Just as you're saying that, Frentzen's off the road.
01:35:56Mechanical failure then for Frentzen, our third-place man.
01:36:00That puts Heidfeld, who's passed Trulli, not seen on the cameras,
01:36:04but Heidfeld was up into fourth.
01:36:06Now will be third, because Trulli is on those full wets
01:36:10and lapping very, very slowly.
01:36:12So, all of a sudden, from being a dead third and fourth there for the Jordan team,
01:36:16he's beginning to fall apart.
01:36:18Just goes to show, you should never really talk about points-paying positions
01:36:21before the race finishes.
01:36:22Heinz-Harald Frentzen from third, then dropping out.
01:36:25A bitter blow for him, but Trulli up to fourth.
01:36:28And Heidfeld on the podium position with Sauber.
01:36:30Could you believe it?
01:36:31Ted Kravitz, what can you tell us?
01:36:32James, it's a fantastic atmosphere down here at McLaren.
01:36:35I'm actually surprised you're allowed in this pit at all.
01:36:38Whenever you're in the commentary box, DC has a storming race.
01:36:41Anyway, there are a lot of nervously confident faces here.
01:36:44Coulthard's got such a great opportunity to take the fight
01:36:46to Schumacher in the championship.
01:36:48They're all willing him on down here at McLaren.
01:36:50I'll bet they are.
01:36:52DC then through Turn 3.
01:36:54He's dropped his pace slightly, but still 22.8 seconds is his lead.
01:36:59We haven't seen much information on our screens.
01:37:01We've lost lots of electrics up here in the commentary box,
01:37:04and apologies once again for any sound or vision loss
01:37:08you had earlier on in this Grand Prix.
01:37:10I'm afraid a lot of electrical problems here at the Interlagos circuit,
01:37:15but no such problems so far for David Coulthard.
01:37:19No. Well, David Coulthard looking as though he might just shape up
01:37:24for his 11th career Grand Prix victory.
01:37:26The man who, certainly for the last two or three years,
01:37:28has been in the shadows of Mika Häkkinen at the McLaren team.
01:37:32Häkkinen has outqualified him every race so far this year.
01:37:35Coulthard has raced very strongly in both of the opening two Grands Prix,
01:37:39as he has again today, and he seems to be the man
01:37:41who's taking the fight now to Ferrari.
01:37:43He's got 21 seconds over Schumacher.
01:37:45This is a fight for 6th place between Jean Alési and Fizikala in the Benetton,
01:37:50and it was 2 tenths of a second last time around,
01:37:53and that's about exactly what it looks now,
01:37:55so I don't know exactly which tyres they're on.
01:37:58I'll try and have a look.
01:37:59Alési looks like he's on the full wet to me.
01:38:01Didn't get much of a look at the Benetton tucked up behind,
01:38:04but Jean Alési there, I'm sure the Benetton is on the intermediate,
01:38:08so that'll be a good one round the outside,
01:38:10and Jean should have the line into the next corner,
01:38:12but too much traction there.
01:38:14Benetton move into a point-scoring position.
01:38:17Who'd have thought it?
01:38:18After the terrible time they've had so far this weekend,
01:38:20both Fizikala and Jenson Button, his teammate,
01:38:23have struggled to even break into the top 17,
01:38:25let alone the point-scoring top 6 positions,
01:38:28and there'll be some disappointment also at Prost,
01:38:30as we see again just the way that Alési has ran a little bit wide,
01:38:33and Fizikala was able to nab that 6th place from him.
01:38:36Yeah, Fizikala, I'm sure, will be on the intermediates there,
01:38:38because really, Jean should have been able to get into that corner first
01:38:44from that position, but just could not find the traction.
01:38:4719 races now Alési has gone since he last scored a point.
01:38:50This is his second season with the Prost team,
01:38:52and it's been pretty difficult for the last couple of years,
01:38:55but he was perhaps hoping he might get something there.
01:38:57Of course, he used to race for the Benetton team,
01:38:59so he'll be doubly sad about what's just happened.
01:39:01Five laps to go in this race.
01:39:03Yes, I stood in a group of ex-drivers last night
01:39:06with Marqui, Blundell, Berger, JJ Leto, all sorts,
01:39:11standing having a good old gas about the good old days,
01:39:14and Jean Alési walked up, and we said,
01:39:16John, when are you joining us?
01:39:17We're forming a new club of ex-drivers.
01:39:19We're going to have a master's tour soon, or something like that.
01:39:22And John said, can I please join you tonight?
01:39:24I've had enough.
01:39:25But he will certainly be very disappointed
01:39:28with losing that world championship point,
01:39:30if that's the way it stays.
01:39:32You and him could be the Statler and Waldorf of Formula 1,
01:39:34couldn't you?
01:39:35Leaning out of your box, making comments about the youngsters.
01:39:37So, this is the scrap on the track, though,
01:39:39between Panis and Trolley,
01:39:40and this is the battle for fourth place.
01:39:42Three world championship points at stake here,
01:39:44if you can come fourth.
01:39:46Only two points available for the fifth place man.
01:39:48Nothing in it between them.
01:39:49Panis looking strong.
01:39:50Yeah, Panis then.
01:39:53Let's see if we can see.
01:39:54I've got such a poor picture up here in the commentary box.
01:39:57I just cannot begin to see what tyres they're on.
01:39:59It's just all fuzzy from where we're sitting.
01:40:01I hope it's better for you at home.
01:40:03But at the moment, the Jordan has the upper hand.
01:40:06Trulli then, fourth place man.
01:40:08Panis, and we know Panis has got a lot of straight line speed.
01:40:11He popped past a Jordan early on,
01:40:13and two Jordans early on in the race.
01:40:14Exactly like that, down into turn one.
01:40:17More straight line speed,
01:40:18and a huge amount more confidence under braking.
01:40:21Panis then, up into the same fourth place
01:40:23that he finished in in Melbourne
01:40:25before they took it away from him
01:40:26for passing under the yellows.
01:40:28No yellow flags waving there.
01:40:29And look at the straight line speed advantage.
01:40:31Remember, these two cars have exactly the same engine.
01:40:35And if any Jordan thought he was having a bad day losing Frentzen,
01:40:38having the BAR Honda breeze past his car
01:40:42will not please him at all.
01:40:44David Coulthard, though,
01:40:45now just four laps away from victory.
01:40:47And we've hardly seen the man
01:40:49who's going to claim the final podium position
01:40:51if things stay the same.
01:40:53His name is Nick Heidfeld.
01:40:54He's 23 years old.
01:40:55He comes like Heinz-Auer Frentzen
01:40:57from Mönchengladbach in Germany.
01:40:59He was having a terrible time at Prost last year.
01:41:01Really got his head down.
01:41:02He's a protégé of the Mercedes and McLaren team.
01:41:05They farmed him out to Prost,
01:41:06and now they've farmed him out to Sauber.
01:41:08And he's running in third place in this race
01:41:10for the Sauber team.
01:41:13And he's had a terrific start to this 2001 championship.
01:41:16Fourth place in Australia.
01:41:18They've got very, very little experience
01:41:20in this racetrack, Sauber.
01:41:21But they've come here with one driver, Heidfeld,
01:41:23who's got one year's experience,
01:41:25and another driver, Räikkönen,
01:41:26who's never been here before.
01:41:27In fact, has only ever done two Grands Prix in his life.
01:41:29So they've done very well to get the setup right on that car.
01:41:32And Heidfeld looking very strong for a podium finish
01:41:34as we look at Michael Schumacher
01:41:36passing the back marker.
01:41:38And that is the European Minardi of Tarso Marquez.
01:41:41It's the great thing about Formula 1,
01:41:42it's so unpredictable.
01:41:43I mean, Michael just totally dominated
01:41:45those first two races.
01:41:46And here we see Heidfeld
01:41:48ducking up the inside of the Minardi.
01:41:51I think that's just a simple replay,
01:41:52nothing dramatic going on there.
01:41:54And a good overhead shot there of Coulthard
01:41:56gently, gently feeding the nose
01:41:59of that McLaren into Turn 10
01:42:01before heading down through Megolo.
01:42:03So, Martin, let me ask you,
01:42:04we've seen an awful lot of interesting performances today.
01:42:06Who's your man of the match?
01:42:08Who's your driver of the day?
01:42:09What have you liked?
01:42:10This is the third supremely mature drive
01:42:13of David Coulthard,
01:42:14but my man of the day has got to be Montoya, I think.
01:42:17His third ever Grand Prix.
01:42:19He led it with a lot of confidence
01:42:21and supreme driving.
01:42:23And he was on a one-stopper,
01:42:24so I'd give it to Montoya today.
01:42:26But this is a great run from David Coulthard.
01:42:29Montoya, the man of the match.
01:42:30Coulthard looking as though
01:42:31he's going to be the winner of the race.
01:42:33And this man is going to be the hero of Switzerland.
01:42:36Nick Heidfeld for the Swiss Sauber team,
01:42:38powered, of course, by the Ferrari engine,
01:42:40which won last year's World Championship.
01:42:42It's now a customer unit,
01:42:44sold to Sauber and to the Prost team.
01:42:46And Sauber are certainly making great use of it.
01:42:48It's only one step behind the engine
01:42:50in Michael Schumacher's car,
01:42:51and it's giving them a lot of power.
01:42:52They've got a good chassis.
01:42:53Heidfeld doing a terrific job.
01:42:55Coulthard just a lap and a half away from victory.
01:42:58Yep. Two, including this one, as you say.
01:43:01And I'll tell you what hurts at the end of these races.
01:43:03I mean, Coulthard, I know, is wearing a neck strap.
01:43:06The rain would have taken away a lot of the pain
01:43:08around this track with the less grip.
01:43:11But what hurts at the end of these races,
01:43:13where the track is so wet and you're hanging on,
01:43:15even in a straight line,
01:43:16are your jaws and your teeth.
01:43:18You clench your teeth so hard,
01:43:20just trying to wait for the next time
01:43:22the car gets out of shape at 150 miles an hour or so.
01:43:25But Coulthard happily on his way
01:43:28towards the end of this, the penultimate lap.
01:43:31So we've hardly had time to draw breath
01:43:34since this race started about an hour and a half ago.
01:43:37It's been incident-packed.
01:43:39Rubens Barrichello's car failed on the formation lap.
01:43:42He ran back, got into the spare,
01:43:44and then had a huge accident which put him out of the race.
01:43:46We've had safety cars.
01:43:47We've had Juan Montoya leading this race
01:43:49for well over 20 laps
01:43:51before he went to make a routine pass
01:43:53on a backmarker who let him through.
01:43:55And then he went straight up the back of him,
01:43:57taking Montoya out of the race.
01:43:59Michael Schumacher took the lead.
01:44:00Then we had rain.
01:44:02Michael looked as though he was in a very strong position.
01:44:05Coulthard didn't make the early stop for the wet tyres.
01:44:08It looked like it had cost him the race win.
01:44:10But then Michael made two very big mistakes on a wet track.
01:44:13Coulthard dived past him into Turn 1 to take the lead.
01:44:17It's been a feisty fighting drive
01:44:19from the young man from Twine Home in Scotland.
01:44:21He's got about a mile and a half to two miles left to go.
01:44:25He comes into Ferradura Corner for the last time.
01:44:28And that's the right-hander.
01:44:3050 miles an hour, third gear.
01:44:32All the thoughts now will be going through his head
01:44:34about his 11th Grand Prix victory,
01:44:36his first for 10 races.
01:44:38Normally Murray might say he could almost get out and push it home,
01:44:41but he certainly will not be able to do that at this racetrack.
01:44:44It's a massively steep hill.
01:44:46It doesn't look like it on your TV pictures
01:44:48as they come up to the end of the lap.
01:44:50But Coulthard, the engine sounds sweet enough, doesn't it?
01:44:53And no gearshift problems.
01:44:55Nothing hanging off it.
01:44:57All the time in the world, he can just cruise
01:44:59a cruisy outlap on the first morning of testing.
01:45:02Just pay attention.
01:45:04Don't make any silly mistakes.
01:45:06And David Coulthard surely now has this Grand Prix in his pocket.
01:45:10Coulthard then is going to take the ten points.
01:45:12A brilliant drive.
01:45:14David Coulthard then comes across the start-finish line
01:45:17and wins the Brazilian Grand Prix,
01:45:19his first victory in Brazil,
01:45:21his first win for ten Grand Prixs.
01:45:23And second place will be Michael Schumacher,
01:45:26who led this race
01:45:27and who thought probably he had it in the bag, but he didn't.
01:45:30Nick Heidfeld does indeed finish on the podium for Sauber.
01:45:33It's been an extraordinary afternoon here.
01:45:35We're waiting for Olivier Panis,
01:45:37who's going to be fourth for British American Racing,
01:45:39ahead of Jarno Culli, who will be fifth for Jordan.
01:45:42And Fisichella will get the final point for the Benetton team,
01:45:45which will give him an awful lot to smile about
01:45:47after a terrible, terrible first two Grand Prixs.
01:45:50But the winner of this race, and look how happy he is,
01:45:53David Coulthard of Great Britain,
01:45:55wins the Brazilian Grand Prix.
01:45:57Strong run then from young Heidfeld in third place there.
01:46:01So his first ever Grand Prix podium,
01:46:03and well-deserved too.
01:46:04That was tricky conditions today.
01:46:06Yes, very difficult driving conditions indeed.
01:46:08All of these men deserve a medal.
01:46:10And Panis finishing fourth there.
01:46:12You just saw going through your screens also Culli,
01:46:14waiting for Fisichella.
01:46:16He's a lap down.
01:46:17There he is crossing the line now.
01:46:19Giancarlo Fisichella,
01:46:21teammate to Jenson Button, of course,
01:46:23who has had a very trying time.
01:46:25Jenson finishes in tenth place, though.
01:46:28And Ted is down there with Ron Dennis.
01:46:31Ron Dennis, congratulations.
01:46:32You've finally done it.
01:46:33You've broken the Ferrari stranglehold on Formula 1.
01:46:37What stranglehold? I don't know what you're talking about.
01:46:40Six races in a row, Ron.
01:46:41You've done a brilliant job.
01:46:43Winning races is what we're here to do.
01:46:46We're just doing our job.
01:46:47And a fantastic drive from Coulthard.
01:46:49A word for you, Scott.
01:46:50Yes, great car.
01:46:52It was good.
01:46:53Very good.
01:46:54Congratulations, Ron.
01:46:55Brilliant job.
01:46:56Well, I've been down there many times
01:46:58over the last few years
01:46:59at the end of Grands Prix that have been won by McLaren.
01:47:01And I've seen the tears,
01:47:03the tears, would you believe it,
01:47:04in the eyes of Ron Dennis,
01:47:06the boss of that team.
01:47:07He's a man of steel,
01:47:08but he's got a heart,
01:47:09a very soft heart whenever there's a win.
01:47:11David Coulthard then comes in,
01:47:12the winner of this Brazilian Grand Prix.
01:47:15Come on!
01:47:20It's a brilliant drive, David.
01:47:24Thank you, Jeff.
01:47:45Thanks, man.
01:47:49No surprise there.
01:48:07The judge man you are!
01:48:09Happy birthday, Jack!
01:48:14Nick!
01:48:16Nick!
01:48:25Nick, do you have...
01:48:27Nick!
01:48:28Nick, do you have a...
01:48:34I'm sorry.
01:48:35You can do it!
01:48:36You can do it!
01:48:37You can do it!
01:48:40Whoops, sorry.
01:48:45Bye, bye.
01:48:52Fucking yes!
01:48:57Way good!
01:49:01Alright.
