00:00:00to find out exactly what that is.
00:00:04Well, the battles that we're looking at now are in the Constructors' Championship.
00:00:10Sauber is doing extremely well because they've got Kimi Räikkönen in the points
00:00:15and Sauber are in fourth position in the World Championship ahead of BAR and Jordan.
00:00:21I was saying earlier on that if Trolley could stay in his fifth position where he was at the time,
00:00:26it would mean that the Jordan team would move up ahead of BAR in the Constructors' Championship.
00:00:33Well, that hasn't happened because Trolley is down in tenth position as a result of that awful pit stop
00:00:38and Pannis is ahead of him but admittedly not in the points.
00:00:42Interesting things about this race are that Olivier Pannis in ninth place
00:00:47is ahead of his much-vaunted teammate, World Champion of 97, Jacques Villeneuve, by two places.
00:00:55Jarno Trolley down in tenth place is just two places ahead of his new teammate,
00:01:01Jean Alési, who is soldiering on in twelfth position.
00:01:04And Alési's priority in this event, having come from the Prost team,
00:01:09using Ferrari Acer engines and Michelin tyres,
00:01:14and you're looking now at Giancarlo Fisichella in fourteenth place at the pits.
00:01:19Sixth place man at Räikkönen also and there's a drama.
00:01:23Goes to pull away and has to stop.
00:01:25I think the left rear wasn't some kind of drama with the left rear.
00:01:29I thought I briefly saw there but Räikkönen in from sixth place as well.
00:01:34So, Fisichella was down in fourteenth before that pit stop.
00:01:39This man, Ralf, is in fourth place.
00:01:41The man behind him, Häkkönen, has got the pace to win this race if only he hadn't started sixth on the grid.
00:01:46Häkkönen, over a second a lap faster than anybody else for the last few laps
00:01:52and really on a charge in fifth place at the moment.
00:01:55But, of course, fifty-two and a half seconds behind the leader.
00:01:58Yeah, it won't do him much good, of course, because even though he is going so much quicker,
00:02:04he's still over twenty-one seconds behind Ralf Schumacher,
00:02:08although he's gaining on the Williams BMW.
00:02:11Things are looking very solid at the front now on lap forty-eight out of seventy-seven in Hungary.
00:02:18Temperature has actually gone down quite a lot.
00:02:21It's gone down about four degrees since the race began.
00:02:25Bridgestone said in a rather hurt way after the German Grand Prix
00:02:30that they didn't think that people's view that they had a poor hot weather tyre was justified.
00:02:36Bit of debris flying off the back of Räikkönen's car.
00:02:39Bit of car flying off the back of Räikkönen's car on that replay.
00:02:43And Bridgestone seem to be proving here with Michael Schumacher there leading the race.
00:02:48David Coulthard second, Barry Kello third,
00:02:51that their tyre for the very hot conditions at the Hungaroring is not to be sneezed at.
00:02:57The top Michelin runner is Ralf Schumacher.
00:03:00He is in fourth place.
00:03:02The second Michelin runner is Montoya, who is seventh.
00:03:05He's about to be lapped.
00:03:07Schumacher then homing in on seventh-place man Montoya.
00:03:12And it's just a seventy-eight second lap here, of course,
00:03:14so it's not unusual for a lot of lapping on Montoya being extremely courteous.
00:03:20He's not really in a race, is Montoya at the moment,
00:03:24although he was only three or four seconds behind Heidfeld,
00:03:27but being very, very courteous to race leader Michael Schumacher,
00:03:31who's still maintaining a 12.7 second lead over David Coulthard.
00:03:36You're absolutely right about Hacken, and he's doing it again.
00:03:38He's already made the fastest lap of the race, 116.8 on lap 48,
00:03:44and it looks as though his current lap is going to be a very quick one, too.
00:03:48Now, I was saying earlier on that because the tyres are individually made,
00:03:52you can literally get one set giving a better performance than the other.
00:03:56That's the only thing I can think of at the moment that's beneficially affecting him.
00:04:01Absolutely, and the tyres do vary.
00:04:03It's a chemical reaction between the rubber and the racetrack,
00:04:05and they're not all as hard as they try.
00:04:07Absolutely identical changes in the pits.
00:04:09Yeah, the second stops, guys, coming up in the next five to eight laps.
00:04:13Now, it's worth remembering that Rubens Barrichello pitted two laps before David Coulthard.
00:04:18It's really going to come down to fractions of a second in the pit stop
00:04:22as to whether Rubens or David comes out ahead this afternoon.
00:04:25We've just seen a second ago Kimi Räikkönen coming in from sixth place.
00:04:28It took him almost ten seconds to make a pit stop, and he's lost ground.
00:04:33We saw it before with Trolley. It can happen.
00:04:36Look at Trolley.
00:04:37Incidentally, you see an auxiliary rear wing just behind the camera at the top of the car.
00:04:42Several teams have got extra aerodynamic aids at the Hungaroring
00:04:47because downforce is what you need.
00:04:50Williams have got quite a large extra rear wing.
00:04:54McLaren have got a very small extra rear wing,
00:04:57and Williams have also got a higher secondary wing.
00:05:01Any little extra bit of pressure you can get forcing the tyres down on this slippery track is very welcome.
00:05:07We've got a reverse situation here from the first set of pit stops
00:05:10where Coulthard is now under pressure from Barrichello rather than the other way around,
00:05:14and it's all going to be a question of can he stay in front this time instead of can he leapfrog.
00:05:19Coulthard definitely struggling in the second half of this stint,
00:05:23the middle stint of the race, of course,
00:05:26and Barrichello able to keep within seven tenths of a second.
00:05:30Montoya in for his second stop.
00:05:33Scrubbed set of tyres, I see.
00:05:36Those have been used before.
00:05:38It improves the performance, and off goes a tear-off.
00:05:42The drivers have over their transparent visors auxiliary flexible ones
00:05:48which they can rip off when they get bits of rubber or dirt sticking to them to improve their vision.
00:05:55And Rubens Barrichello's vision is very clear about who is in front of him
00:06:00as in comes the BAR.
00:06:02I think I saw the front of the car being dropped there a little bit too early.
00:06:06It is Villeneuve who is in the pits.
00:06:09Of course, he was in tenth place, so Villeneuve rejoins.
00:06:13I wonder if there's a cloud come over or something,
00:06:15because all of a sudden everybody's lapping quite a bit faster,
00:06:19so I would imagine temperatures are just falling away a little bit
00:06:22and that they're finding some good mechanical grip in this racetrack.
00:06:25It's only 34 degrees now.
00:06:27I know, but something's happened out there,
00:06:29because everybody's suddenly started pumping in 17s where they were doing 18s
00:06:33or 18s where they were doing 19s.
00:06:36It's amazing how just what seems quite a small temperature change
00:06:40can beneficially affect the performance of the cars.
00:06:43And you're looking now at David Coulthard,
00:06:45second place coming out of the last corner before Rubens Barrichello.
00:06:49David's already had a couple of second places this year, of course,
00:06:53in Australia and at the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola.
00:06:57Rubens Barrichello's had even more second places.
00:07:00He's had three of them at the Malaysian Grand Prix and at Monaco,
00:07:06and the last race, which was the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.
00:07:10So, closing on David Coulthard's car.
00:07:14Mika Häkkinen continues to go faster and faster,
00:07:17but he's still 15 seconds behind fourth-place Ralf Schumacher.
00:07:21Yeah, let's have a look at the scraps.
00:07:22This is the best one.
00:07:23Barrichello 9.10s behind Coulthard.
00:07:25Häkkinen just 13 seconds behind fourth-place man Ralf Schumacher.
00:07:30Then we go down to Panis VIII, Montoya IX,
00:07:33where there's just 1.4 seconds between them.
00:07:36Not too many other fights on the racetrack this afternoon.
00:07:39And the Ferrari mechanics in the pit lane.
00:07:42Last time around, Michael Schumacher pitted first.
00:07:4511.9 second lead at the moment.
00:07:47Häkkinen just doing yet another new lap record, a 1.16.723.
00:07:53And there is Michael Schumacher.
00:07:56Again, we're looking for something sub-8 seconds for a perfect one,
00:08:00but they don't need to rush.
00:08:01They can just be calm.
00:08:03Michael's calm on the throttle.
00:08:04He's not flipping it.
00:08:05He's keeping it all calm.
00:08:07And did he get away?
00:08:08We cut away, but did he get away?
00:08:10Yes, he is.
00:08:11I can see him out of the window now.
00:08:12Michael Schumacher just very calmly pulling away.
00:08:16He knows he's got enough in his pocket to maintain the lead
00:08:20once the others have all made their second stop.
00:08:24And again, he just makes it out in front,
00:08:27crucially, of two more cars,
00:08:29so he will not have a slow-out lap.
00:08:32Yeah, Kimi Räikkönen, he's just ahead of him.
00:08:35And, of course, David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello have gone through.
00:08:40So, again, David Coulthard is leading the Hungarian Grand Prix.
00:08:45That is fourth-placeman Ralf Schumacher.
00:08:48So all the top men now have made their stops, second stops,
00:08:52except, of course, significantly, David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello.
00:08:57Michael Schumacher has been in.
00:08:59Ralf Schumacher has been in.
00:09:01The order on lap 53 out of 77 at the present moment
00:09:07is Coulthard, Barrichello, Michael Schumacher that you are looking at.
00:09:10Look at all the rubber crumb on the circuit there.
00:09:14We call them marbles, and they can be very, very slippery indeed
00:09:18and take the car off if you hit them at the wrong place.
00:09:22So the crucial thing now is can David Coulthard...
00:09:26There is Barrichello. Right.
00:09:28James, take it away.
00:09:29Well, we're looking for something, as you say, about sub-seven seconds.
00:09:32It's going to be very, very marginal indeed as to who comes second today.
00:09:37It's not really that great.
00:09:39So Coulthard has a window of opportunity. Can he take it?
00:09:42Well, Barrichello, that 8.5-second stop may decide the place.
00:09:47Yes, and Coulthard on that very same lap did his fastest of the race, a 1.170.
00:09:53And this could be crucial with...
00:09:56I'm hearing there's a Williams off. Yes, there is.
00:09:58Montoya.
00:09:59Montoya off for the second time today.
00:10:01The first time around, he got away with it easily.
00:10:04This time around, it looks like he hasn't fared so well.
00:10:07Pannis has passed him.
00:10:09But I see McLaren in the pit lane. It will surely be for Coulthard.
00:10:13Häkkinen is on a completely different strategy.
00:10:16And this, I think, is going to decide second place this afternoon.
00:10:20Coulthard on a very hot in-lap as well.
00:10:22A good first sector. He's lost half a second in the mid-sector to the best of the afternoon.
00:10:27Not too bad.
00:10:28He'll take a wide sweeping line into that long but tight right-hander.
00:10:34Squirt now down.
00:10:36He's looking for that white line now.
00:10:38And he can already see somebody in the pit lane with his lollipop.
00:10:41James.
00:10:42It takes just 3.5 seconds to change the wheels.
00:10:44It's the fuel that takes the time.
00:10:4650 kilos of it need to go in.
00:10:48And anything under 8 seconds should handle it.
00:10:51Roaring on the throttle, David Coulthard.
00:10:53It's not great. The release didn't come off.
00:10:56Where's Rubens Barrichello?
00:10:57There is Michael Schumacher.
00:10:59It's going to be mighty, mighty close.
00:11:01There is Rubens Barrichello on the right.
00:11:02There is David Coulthard on the left.
00:11:04And the Benetton is in front.
00:11:06And Barrichello is going to do it.
00:11:08Yes!
00:11:09Barrichello goes through into second place.
00:11:11David Coulthard has lost out as a result of that sticky fuel nozzle.
00:11:15Yeah, the fuel nozzle wouldn't come off, would it?
00:11:17And Coulthard could not get away.
00:11:19That has cost him second place at the moment.
00:11:22Barrichello moves, crucially, two places nearer to him,
00:11:27two points nearer to him in the World Championship as well,
00:11:29if they stay like this.
00:11:31And also Ferrari will take the Constructors' World Championship this afternoon
00:11:35all on a sticky fuel nozzle.
00:11:38Yeah, and if that happens, let me just make this point,
00:11:41that if Michael Schumacher takes the World Championship,
00:11:45it will have been with four races still to go.
00:11:49Belgium, Italy, America and Japan.
00:11:51When the great Nigel Mansell did that in 1992,
00:11:55there were still five races to go.
00:11:58I wish not to detract from Schumacher's performance, if he performs it,
00:12:03because we're on lap 55 now.
00:12:05There's still 22 laps to go, but it's a point that's worth making
00:12:09as you look at third place, David Coulthard.
00:12:13And Barrichello has regained that second place that he held for so long
00:12:18and lost on the previous pit stop,
00:12:20which means to say that Ferrari leads, Ferrari second,
00:12:24Schumacher leads, Barrichello second.
00:12:26McLaren's are third and fourth now,
00:12:29because as a result of the pit stops,
00:12:31Mikko Häkkinen is now a bit of fourth place,
00:12:33but he is 7.8 seconds behind his teammate, David Coulthard,
00:12:38and has yet to make his second stop.
00:12:40Yes, he only stopped late.
00:12:42They could have put him on a one-stopper,
00:12:44but he only stopped for 6.8 seconds, did Häkkinen,
00:12:47so I am expecting him to have to come in again before the end of the race.
00:12:52So Ferrari 1-2, McLaren, Coulthard and Häkkinen 3-4,
00:12:56Ralf Schumacher just about holding station back in fifth.
00:13:00Heidfeld is now the leading salvo driver.
00:13:02They've been swapping around all afternoon,
00:13:04and Jarno, truly, once again out of the motor race.
00:13:07Oh dear, Eddie Jordan is going to be down, down, down in the dumps, dumps, dumps,
00:13:15because, yet again, Jarno, truly, retires from the Grand Prix.
00:13:20That's the fifth time he's done it this year.
00:13:23He's going to be a very unhappy man,
00:13:25but not possibly as unhappy as his team boss.
00:13:30The only Jordan left in the race now, as you watch Jarno, truly, coasting in,
00:13:35is Jean Alessi, who is now in 10th position.
00:13:39And Alessi hasn't pitted yet, amazingly,
00:13:42so Alessi obviously filled his car up at the start of the race.
00:13:45Most cars have pitted twice.
00:13:47Alessi, according to the computer, and I don't recall seeing him,
00:13:50has not pitted at all this afternoon,
00:13:53and we see the McLaren mechanics getting ready for Häkkinen.
00:13:56Häkkinen then in for his second stop from what was fourth place.
00:14:00He had a 17.9 second advantage over Ralf Schumacher.
00:14:04This is going to be nip and tuck.
00:14:06I'm assuming Ralf will maintain that position.
00:14:09He does. He passes our window.
00:14:11Ralf maintains fifth position, but Häkkinen getting ever closer
00:14:15after losing all that time earlier in the race,
00:14:18and oh, so nearly connecting there with Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:14:22Yeah, well, there's a theory, Martin,
00:14:24that the transponder has fallen off the Jordan of Jean Alessi,
00:14:29and that we therefore don't know that he made his pit stop.
00:14:32I remember, actually, Jean one year in the Benetton
00:14:35when he just blithely drove on for lap after lap
00:14:39with Flavio Briatore and Nick Wirth
00:14:42and everybody practically lying across the track
00:14:45to tell him that he got to come in,
00:14:47and he eventually ran out of fuel.
00:14:49Now, here is the McLaren of Micah Häkkinen
00:14:53just getting out of the pits alongside Heinz-Harald Frentzen,
00:14:57who will have got a shot.
00:14:58Remember how Heinz-Harald held up David Coulthard yesterday?
00:15:01Yeah, and we said it was gormless,
00:15:02but that was very good stuff from Frentzen there,
00:15:05no doubt about it, to be heading into that corner,
00:15:08hanging on to a Prost,
00:15:09and able to leave enough room for recovering Häkkinen
00:15:14rejoining after his pit stop
00:15:16was good driving from Frentzen and very fair.
00:15:19That's 58 out of 77.
00:15:21Here are the retirements in the order of retirement.
00:15:24Eddie Irvide out, Jaguar,
00:15:26Luciano Berti out, Prost,
00:15:28Bernoldi out, Arrows,
00:15:30Button out, Benetton,
00:15:31Alonso out, Minardi.
00:15:3317 out of the 22 starters are left.
00:15:36Tarso Marquez is last in the Minardi.
00:15:38He has been lapped four times.
00:15:40Top ten, lap 58.
00:15:42Schumacher, nine seconds ahead of teammate Barrichello,
00:15:45who is 1.7 seconds ahead of McLaren's David Coulthard.
00:15:49Fourth is Ralf Schumacher, Williams BMW,
00:15:51where he's been virtually the whole race.
00:15:53Fifth is Micah Häkkinen, so he's gone down a place.
00:15:56Sixth is Nick Heidfeldt,
00:15:58and that means to say that Sauber are yet again
00:16:00in World Championship points position.
00:16:02And Kimi Räikkönen is seventh,
00:16:04Montoya is eighth, Panis is ninth,
00:16:06and tenth position is Jacques Wielder.
00:16:09So, two Ferraris in the top two places,
00:16:13two McLarens third and fifth.
00:16:16That means to say, we'll say again,
00:16:18Michael Schumacher looking very, very, very good
00:16:21for his fourth World Championship
00:16:23and his 51st race win
00:16:26to equal the record of the great Alain Prost
00:16:29and Ferrari looking good for the Constructors' Contest.
00:16:32This pair are only eight seconds behind Michael Schumacher,
00:16:35but I don't think that's any indication of a problem for Michael.
00:16:39I think he's really just been pacing himself
00:16:41almost from the get-go this afternoon.
00:16:43Barrichello and Coulthard really chasing each other so hard,
00:16:46they've really kept within striking distance of Michael.
00:16:50You can see that rear wing...
00:16:52Oh, no, you can't, because they've moved away.
00:16:54People say that if there's any good luck going,
00:16:58that Michael gets it.
00:17:00But, you know, he was lucky when he went across that gravel track
00:17:03just as he was coming up to the grid,
00:17:05that he didn't do some pretty serious damage
00:17:08to the underside of the car.
00:17:10Yeah, he is famous for spinning off and not ever hitting anything
00:17:13and somehow or other getting away with it,
00:17:15but, you know, you make your own luck, totally, without any doubt.
00:17:18And a good driver and a good Formula 1 car
00:17:21always somehow spin down the middle of the track,
00:17:23and we're seeing Pannis out of the window here,
00:17:25coasting into the pits and out of what was ninth place.
00:17:29So, Olivier Pannis then apparently out of the race in the BAR,
00:17:34and that promotes Villeneuve up to ninth
00:17:36and John Alessi into the top ten for Jordan.
00:17:39Yeah, at the present moment, Talking Drivers Championship,
00:17:42Rubens Barrichello is seven points behind David Coulthard
00:17:47in second place in the championship,
00:17:50but he's gaining two of those points
00:17:52if he can stay ahead of him in this race.
00:17:55You were talking about payback time
00:17:57between Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello
00:18:00if Schumacher clinches the championship here, Martin,
00:18:03and it could well be that the contest then,
00:18:05as far as Ferrari are concerned,
00:18:07having won the Constructors' Championship
00:18:09and the Drivers' Championship,
00:18:11will be to get Barrichello ahead of Coulthard
00:18:14in the Drivers' Contest.
00:18:16Yes, I think that will clearly be Ferrari's coup de grace,
00:18:20no doubt about it, in the final stages of the World Championship
00:18:25If I was...
00:18:27I don't think if I was Barrichello,
00:18:29I'd accept the gift of a race win,
00:18:31I think that's the worst...
00:18:33You'd turn it down, wouldn't you?
00:18:35I would, I have to say.
00:18:37I would not accept that gift,
00:18:39because all it's doing is saying,
00:18:41look, I'm so much faster than you,
00:18:43I'm just finally going to have to give you a race.
00:18:45That's a painful one,
00:18:47and we saw Senna do that to Berger,
00:18:49and I just think it is...
00:18:51Unless it's absolutely in team play,
00:18:54I think it's a different scenario.
00:18:56Oh, you're a better man than I am, Gagarin.
00:18:58Lap 61 out of 77,
00:19:00there are seven and a half seconds
00:19:02between the two Ferraris,
00:19:04Barrichello continuing to lap marginally quicker,
00:19:07as you look now at Ralf Schumacher,
00:19:10who has been caught by Mika Häkkinen.
00:19:12Now this is the battle for fourth place,
00:19:15and Häkkinen's previous lap was 2.3 seconds faster
00:19:18than the Williams BMW.
00:19:20Is Ralf Schumacher in trouble?
00:19:23I think he's just struggling a bit
00:19:25with the car this afternoon,
00:19:27and Häkkinen, as we've said earlier in the race,
00:19:29has been absolutely flying.
00:19:31Häkkinen had the equipment today to win the race,
00:19:33by the looks of it.
00:19:35I've been watching many, probably 20 or 30
00:19:37of his lap times this afternoon,
00:19:39and he's been absolutely flying
00:19:41once he got clear of Trulli earlier on in the race,
00:19:45when Trulli pitted for the first time,
00:19:48and since then he's been screaming around the racetrack,
00:19:51and this is the net result.
00:19:53He's caught Ralf Schumacher,
00:19:54but can he do anything about it?
00:19:56Four tenths if he was behind.
00:19:57You can see that gap for yourself,
00:19:59and he appears to have a much, much faster car.
00:20:02Not going to be enough for McLaren
00:20:04in the Constructors' Championship,
00:20:06even if he gets past Ralf Schumacher, though.
00:20:09But he's certainly trying,
00:20:11and Ralf knows exactly what to do with the motor car.
00:20:14I've told you many times in this race already
00:20:16how difficult it is to pass at the Hungaro Ring,
00:20:19and Ralf Schumacher is going to make it
00:20:21doubly difficult for Micah Hakkanen.
00:20:23You'll see the distinctive McLaren
00:20:26and the distinctive blue helmet
00:20:28with the white circular band of Micah Hakkanen behind him,
00:20:32and he'll know what he's got to do to keep him behind.
00:20:34And it's perfectly legal, incidentally.
00:20:36You can take whatever line you like
00:20:38if you are in front,
00:20:39provided you do not weave consistently across the track.
00:20:44And the leaders now,
00:20:46Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello
00:20:49and David Coulthard,
00:20:50with nine seconds covering the three of them,
00:20:52are on lap 62,
00:20:5415 laps to go in this 77-lap race,
00:20:57as you watch the battle between Ralf Schumacher
00:21:00and the Williams BMW,
00:21:01the top Michelin runner
00:21:03and Micah Hakkanen for that fourth position
00:21:06and the three World Championship points that go with it.
00:21:09Nick Heidfeld is still in sixth position for Sauber.
00:21:14They've had so many podiums,
00:21:17sorry, points places this year,
00:21:19and now they're getting another one.
00:21:20A complete turnaround for the Swiss team.
00:21:23Problem here for Hakkanen is,
00:21:24as at so many other races this year,
00:21:26that Williams has sensational straight line speed,
00:21:29and even in this very short and twisty racetrack,
00:21:33they're six or seven kilometres per hour faster
00:21:36down the straight,
00:21:38so that's going to be a major stumbling block for Hakkanen.
00:21:41He's going to have to hustle him in the corners,
00:21:43force him into some kind of error.
00:21:46So we have then Micah Hakkanen's McLaren
00:21:49chasing down Ralf Schumacher's Williams,
00:21:52and some 30 seconds up the road,
00:21:55Coulthard is still fighting hard with the Ferrari of Barrichello.
00:22:00Meanwhile, Michael Schumacher serenely up front,
00:22:03but by only seven and a half seconds now.
00:22:05Yeah, well, Williams have had 15 retirements
00:22:10from 24 starts so far this year,
00:22:13but both cars are still running at the Hungarian Grand Prix,
00:22:17with, as you can see, Ralf Schumacher in fourth place.
00:22:20You can't see Montoya, but he is still there in eighth position,
00:22:24albeit having been lapped once.
00:22:26So hopefully, from their point of view,
00:22:28they have overcome the reliability bogey,
00:22:31and they're going to be very, very much a threat for next year.
00:22:34We've got so used, over the recent years,
00:22:37to Ferrari and McLaren dominating the championship,
00:22:40after Williams have done so for so long,
00:22:43but now that Williams have got this BMW power and the Michelin tyres,
00:22:47they've fought back brilliantly,
00:22:49and they're going to be a major threat for the year 2002.
00:22:52It's a wonderful prospect for next year,
00:22:54Ferrari versus McLaren versus Williams,
00:22:57Ralf Schumacher getting very nearly to be the equal of his great brother,
00:23:02who's now on lap 64,
00:23:0413 laps to go between Michael Schumacher
00:23:08and his fourth World Championship to match Alain Prost,
00:23:13and have been beaten only by one man in the history of Formula 1,
00:23:17Juan Manuel Panjao,
00:23:19who won the World Championship for Maserati, for Mercedes-Benz,
00:23:23for Alfa Romeo and for Ferrari,
00:23:26an amazing achievement.
00:23:28And he did it all between 1950 and 1957.
00:23:33And now, look at Hakanen,
00:23:35I'm pushing, I'm coming through, I'm coming through!
00:23:37No, no, you're not, says Ralfi.
00:23:40I have a feeling this one might end in tears this afternoon.
00:23:43Hakanen has lost two seconds a lap now behind Ralf Schumacher.
00:23:47He will not take any further places,
00:23:49this is his only trophy of the afternoon,
00:23:51because, as I said, Coulthard and Co. another half a minute down the road,
00:23:55but Hakanen, having had a difficult afternoon,
00:23:58will take a lot of pleasure from getting past that Williams,
00:24:01and he's certainly got the much faster car,
00:24:03particularly under braking,
00:24:04and it's just tempting him to have a stab.
00:24:07Well, he's certainly not lacking commitment now.
00:24:10There have been people who've been saying,
00:24:12two championships behind him,
00:24:15Micah Hakanen has lost the will to win.
00:24:19Well, he certainly hasn't done that.
00:24:21He might have gone off the boil very slightly,
00:24:23but he's certainly pushing very, very hard indeed now,
00:24:27and if he can get past Ralf Schumacher,
00:24:30it's going to make one point difference in the Drivers' Championship for him,
00:24:35which is neither here nor there,
00:24:37because Hakanen is way down in 15th position at the present...
00:24:41Sorry, Hakanen is way down in 5th position,
00:24:45with 19 points at the present moment,
00:24:47but he's keeping going.
00:24:49Lap 65 for Michael Schumacher.
00:24:52Ferrari.
00:24:55What's happening behind?
00:24:57Well, it's no battle between Heidfeldt and Raikkonen.
00:25:02There's 11 seconds behind them for 6th and 7th places.
00:25:06The man to watch at the present moment is John Alessi.
00:25:12Can he do anything about Jacques Villeneuve?
00:25:14Alessi's going to be in the top 10
00:25:16in his first race for Jordan in Formula 1,
00:25:19but it doesn't look as though he's going to be able to improve beyond that.
00:25:23Now, we haven't seen him on the TV, pity,
00:25:25but Alessi has surely pitted somewhere,
00:25:27and interestingly, his sector times are not changing,
00:25:30so for whatever reason, the computer's not recording John Alessi,
00:25:34although they're getting his overall lap times,
00:25:36they're not getting any sectors,
00:25:37and they're certainly not clocking him coming in the pits,
00:25:39because it's showing him as not pitted yet,
00:25:42where clearly he has as Hakkinen
00:25:44pours more relentless pressure onto Ralf,
00:25:47but Ralf's an old enough hand these days
00:25:49to be able to sustain most of that,
00:25:51excepting his car really does look rather a handful.
00:25:56So, what about Benetton when they came here
00:25:59with that improved engine package,
00:26:01that improved aerodynamic package
00:26:04that they were so optimistic about and still are?
00:26:07Well, Jenson Button retired a long, long time ago.
00:26:11Giancarlo Fisichella is still soldiering on.
00:26:14He's in 12th position,
00:26:16which is about where he's been finishing in most of the races,
00:26:19perhaps one or two places higher so far this season.
00:26:24So, now, this is where Ralf Schumacher and Micah Hakkinen
00:26:29are going to have their eyes peeled,
00:26:31because they're closing up on the car in front to lap it,
00:26:36and if there is even a momentary fault,
00:26:38this could give Micah Hakkinen his opportunity
00:26:41to get past Ralf Schumacher,
00:26:43as Nigel Mansell did to Senna
00:26:46when they came up to Stefan Johansson's Onix in 1959.
00:26:50But Schumacher, Ralf will be just as conscious of that situation
00:26:55as Hakkinen is,
00:26:57and the car they are approaching, of course,
00:26:59is Fisichella's Benetton in 12th position.
00:27:02Two laps down.
00:27:03I was born in 1959.
00:27:04I think it was a touch later than that, Murray,
00:27:06but we're hearing that Frentzen is off the road
00:27:09in his first race for Cross Grand Prix.
00:27:11We haven't seen it yet,
00:27:13but Heinz-Harald Frentzen has stopped somewhere
00:27:18in the final sector.
00:27:26And the producer is very sensibly staying with Ralf Schumacher
00:27:29in 4th position and Micah Hakkinen in 5th place,
00:27:32because, really, this is the battle on the circuit
00:27:35at the present moment.
00:27:36We're coming down to the closing stages
00:27:38of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
00:27:40Rubens Barrichello just over six seconds
00:27:43behind Michael Schumacher.
00:27:45David Coulthard virtually tucked up behind his wing,
00:27:48because he's considerably less than a second
00:27:51behind Barrichello now.
00:27:53And out there is Frentzen's car.
00:27:56So, of the two major people who changed teams,
00:28:01Frentzen to Prost and Alessi to Jordan,
00:28:04that is the first retirement with Frentzen out in the Prost.
00:28:09Very, very difficult, of course, for a driver.
00:28:11It's quite noticeable that Fisichella is staying well ahead
00:28:15of Ralf Schumacher and Micah Hakkinen.
00:28:18They're closing now.
00:28:19It's going to be very, very close indeed
00:28:22at the end of this lap,
00:28:24and Micah Hakkinen will be getting as close as he possibly can
00:28:27to Ralf Schumacher.
00:28:28Yeah, Hakkinen absolutely giving it plenty, isn't he?
00:28:30He really wants that fourth place this afternoon very badly.
00:28:34You're right, Murray.
00:28:35They're only sort of slowly homing in on Fisichella.
00:28:37Fisichella already having received
00:28:39at least three or four blue flags.
00:28:40Will he just blend off the throttle, let them through?
00:28:42Yes, indeed, he will.
00:28:44But Hakkinen, therefore, loses another opportunity
00:28:48to somehow find a way past that Williams.
00:28:51And still, if you're a Ferrari fan
00:28:55and you're worried about what is happening up front,
00:28:58I can tell you, you've got nothing to worry about.
00:29:00Because Michael Schumacher, knowing exactly what the score is,
00:29:04is being kept in touch with things by radio.
00:29:07There is his team-mate behind him in second place.
00:29:10That Scarnac car is the Ferrari of Rubens Barrichello,
00:29:14and David Coulthard has now got quite a bit of air
00:29:17between him and the car.
00:29:19He's still in third position, though,
00:29:21but he's seeing his chances of the World Championship slip away.
00:29:25Good drive this afternoon from Barrichello, I think, Murray.
00:29:27He stayed in touch with Michael Schumacher.
00:29:29I mean, he would have been very embarrassed
00:29:31to be eight tenths of a second slower in qualifying,
00:29:34but he's pretty much stayed in touch through the race
00:29:37and certainly kept Coulthard honest
00:29:39and then made a good pay for that fuel nozzle problem
00:29:43when he regained second place
00:29:45that he took on his way to the first corner of the first lap.
00:29:48This, then, still the fight for fourth and fifth position,
00:29:52down to just three tenths of a second, according to the stopwatch,
00:29:55but it looks closer than that, doesn't it?
00:29:57Yeah, it's very interesting the way things have ebbed and flowed
00:30:00over the years with the constructors.
00:30:03I mean, we started off with Alfa Romeo dominating things,
00:30:07Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Lotus, Cooper,
00:30:10they have all been at it,
00:30:12but at the present moment, it's very much Ferrari in charge.
