00:00:00Much harm at the present moment if he wants to finish second because he's ahead of one of his rivals for second place
00:00:06Which is Ralph Schumacher who's in seventh position on the other hand?
00:00:11He's behind another rival
00:00:13Which is Rubens Barrichello the gap between Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard in terms of World Championship points when this race
00:00:21began was five points and
00:00:24They are now
00:00:26Respectively on four and three points so Barrichello is pulling away from
00:00:32Coulthard a bit for second place in the championship
00:00:35We're on lap 10 out of 36 into the pits comes the Ferrari and James Allen is there to receive it
00:00:42Thank you, Murray a very curious situation of course because the whole race has been messed up normally speaking to stopper
00:00:49They would have come in around about lap 17 if you add together all the parade laps
00:00:53They've had plus the racing laps. It's more or less about 17
00:00:56There should be 50 kilos of fuel going in around about eight seconds
00:01:00But what the people who really benefited here are the people who started out the race with a one-stop fuel load because they'll get into
00:01:06The window shortly where they can feel the thing once and keep going and they will really have benefited
00:01:10We'll find out who they are shortly. Thanks for that
00:01:13James a good bit of strategy reading we need all the help we can get
00:01:17And here is Jacques Villeneuve in from 6th position
00:01:21He was just two and a half seconds ahead of Hakanen who has stopped so therefore Hakanen should have moved up
00:01:27We'll wait and see on the track and there is the Ferrari of
00:01:32race leader
00:01:33Michael Schumacher on his 10th lap 20 seconds ahead of Busy Callum and look at
00:01:41Barrichello there Hakanen did get out of the pits ahead of Barrichello
00:01:45Even if Hakanen is now under pressure
00:01:47So a good stop then from McLaren that time around that has elevated Hakanen nicely
00:01:53Kulkar running up in third place of them
00:01:55He's not stopped nor second place man fizzy Keller Michael Schumacher having a laugh up the front 20 seconds ahead
00:02:01Still one and a half to two seconds a lap faster than any body else
00:02:06What throws another curveball into the fuel equation the change is talking about is on the parade lap
00:02:11They use so much less fuel
00:02:13So that all has to be factored in and now it's the time for Michael to come in and give his car a little drink
00:02:19yeah with a 20 second lead, so I don't think he's certainly not going to get back in the lead busy Keller and
00:02:26Kulfard and maybe even Barrichello will go through before Michael Schumacher rejoins
00:02:31But he will have been the first of the top three to make his pit stop now
00:02:36Let's see what the situation is. Here is Michael Schumacher coming down the pit lane as a McLaren comes in to save you heart
00:02:42I mean he was 20 seconds ahead and the and Barrichello has already stopped as has Hakanen Kulkar stopping on the same lap
00:02:49Fizzy Keller did not stop that time around so it's fizzy Keller that takes the lead of the Grand Prix
00:02:55And I'm trying to remember when the last time that a Benetton was leading a Grand Prix
00:03:02It's a Nürburgring the one that Johnny Herbert one wasn't fizzy Keller
00:03:06It was a great shape of winning that and spun off just testing and you've got it, right?
00:03:10It's a Johnny Herbert then and lap 11 out of 36 fizzy Keller who has not stopped
00:03:18Leads Michael Schumacher who has stopped and there to prove it is the German in the Ferrari
00:03:25behind
00:03:26The Italian in the Benetton if Michael Schumacher can just keep it going
00:03:31He will be making history here today in Belgium by winning the Belgian Grand Prix for the sixth time for the fifth time
00:03:38officially, I've been having lost one of those victories and to become the great the
00:03:44greatest Grand Prix driver of all time in terms of the number of victories by winning 52 races in comparison with
00:03:52Alain Prost's 51, but as I always say, there's many a slip tricks cup of lip and there's a long way to go
00:04:01He wasn't sure what fuel was he fizzy Keller. He's
00:04:04He's fueled the longest of anybody with the exception of Frentzen who's way down in 10th place
00:04:10So those Benetton's leaping off the line like that was not a fuel situation
00:04:14They've clearly got some fantastic new launch control and now then fizzy Keller takes to that
00:04:20Extended pit lane. It's very very long on the speed limiter here. Michael will of course then regain the lead
00:04:25Where will fizzy Keller come out? Will it be ahead of Barrichello Hakanen? And where did Coulthard rejoin the track?
00:04:31We haven't been able to see yet. We haven't picked them up
00:04:34It's going to be very tight between those four as to who
00:04:38Made or lost in this current round of pit stops. Yeah, let's remember that
00:04:43It's a Renault engine behind fizzy Keller
00:04:45Renault were the first with a turbo engine and they made it work and they were first with air valves and they made that one
00:04:51It's Coulthard going. So Coulthard's through then for fizzy
00:04:54No, he's not fizzy Keller take the obviously the shorter rear around the inside
00:04:58So Coulthard did stay out ahead of Hakanen Barrichello was the big loser
00:05:03fizzy Keller maintains second position
00:05:06Terrific bit of driving and just a complete what Renault have done
00:05:10They were the first with a V10 and now everybody uses them
00:05:13So I think it was a matter of time before Renault got their new
00:05:18Very very special and it's so special. We don't really know what's in it engine, right?
00:05:23And it looks as though they're getting there now
00:05:26So lap 12 out of 36 with Michael Schumacher, they've all stopped now except Heinz-Harald Frensson
00:05:34Of the right drivers who are out on the circuit at the present moment
00:05:39Michael Schumacher leading the Belgian Grand Prix, which has started three times
00:05:43fizzy Keller second ahead of David Coulthard there they are on the track behind them is Micah Hakanen and just
00:05:502.7 seconds behind his teammate in fourth position fifth is Rubens Barrichello
00:05:55Who as Martin said was the man who suffered there he is and Jarno Trulli in the Jordan is in
00:06:02Sixth position 28 seconds covers the top six
00:06:06Olivier Pannis has received a stop-and-go penalty for crossing the white line on the pit exit
00:06:12We saw the same happen to Ralph Schumacher back at the European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring
00:06:17So Pannis then with a stop-go penalty that is not bothering these frontrunners and fizzy Keller then on
00:06:24The Michelin shot Benetton is definitely able to hold his own up against that company
00:06:31So Michael Schumacher then leads from fizzy Keller, David Coulthard, Hakanen, Barrichello, Jarni, Jarno Trulli makes up the top six
00:06:41Flore here during the pitstop both Coulthard and Hakini are past
00:06:49Montoya with Mario Theissen, the man from BMW, because yes that engine just explodes
00:06:56There goes Theissen
00:07:01Coulthard and Ralph Schumacher yes on the 11th place a bit in the anonymity
00:07:08In combat with Jensen Button, he is just behind
00:07:11Hakini still in front, Barrichello probably comes to a pitstop
00:07:15Later in the race for everyone, so then Barrichello could try to win his position back
00:07:22Fizzy Keller with Coulthard, fizzy Keller who makes up 21 seconds for Schumacher, here the stop-and-go for Pannis
00:07:31Pannis!
00:07:35Well, Pannis moves up a place, he is now 12th. That's the good news
00:07:4515 drivers still on the track, Alonso, Brutti and Irvine, Raikkonen, Heidfeld, De Rosa and Montoya
00:07:56And can Giancarlo Fizzicchella keep David Coulthard behind?
00:08:01He looks very good for Fizzicchella
00:08:04Everything has to do with the fact that he has had a very nice stop, still constantly in front
00:08:09And don't really see the other people attack, they can't get close enough
00:08:21Michael Schumacher currently has 21 seconds, and it will now be 23 seconds
00:08:2822 seconds compared to Fizzicchella
00:08:34In the back, very close with Coulthard, Hakkinen, Barrichello
00:08:39Coulthard, who is very carefully attacking Print
00:08:45Trulli, still on the course for a world championship point, has a lead of 4.2 seconds on the number 7, Jean Malizy, back there on 5
00:08:57Fizzicchella with Benetton to go to Jordan next year, Flavio Briatore and Pat Simmons there on the pit lane gantry
00:09:05Keeping their fingers and everything crossed, because this is the highest that Benetton has been this season
00:09:11It is thereby right, Fizzicchella is driving a magnificent race, take us round with him Martin
00:09:16So he's down towards the Pouhon corner, you tend to turn in quite early, just let the car run all the way to that kerb on the outside
00:09:22It's been a massive forces build, but the downforce squeezes the car down into the tarmac, and no problems at all
00:09:29Fania then, you must keep on the right hand side, otherwise you don't have enough space to take the left hander
00:09:35Rumble strip on the right you can use, and this is a tricky little corner, the first part of Stavelo
00:09:40But doesn't this car appear to be working well? Fizzicchella then through the main part of Stavelo
00:09:45And super, really not having to lift at all, that's why he's able to stay ahead
00:09:49And this is the kind of speed that Luciano Berti went off at, and unfortunately we cut away
00:09:55I think you'd have had a bird's eye view of the energy involved, we've just missed that point now
00:10:01Into the bus stop then for Fizzicchella, clump those kerbs, the cone stop you're taking too much of it
00:10:06The exit is easy now, you can hear the car bouncing on the sawtooth kerbs
00:10:10Traction control cutting in, another lap completed, and Kulthar now 7 tenths of a second behind
00:10:17So, Renault who perfected the turbo engine, Renault who perfected the airbags, Renault who did the V10
00:10:24Renault who got this magic engine, which they've been working so hard on during the season
00:10:30In Fizzicchella and Button's cars, are keeping ahead of the fabled Mercedes-Benz powered McLaren
00:10:38Of David Kulthard, and Mikko Häkkinen who are third and fourth, this is very very significant
00:10:45What we are seeing now, and it bodes well for the 2002 season
00:10:50And well remember in the first race, which is of course now null and void
00:10:54Kulthar did pass Fizzicchella up into L'Ecole, when he got in the slipstream
00:10:58He had a superior straight line speed, but right now Fizzicchella is very strong out of La Source hairpin
00:11:04And so Kulthar's not getting anywhere near him where he needs to through Eau Rouge, James Allen
00:11:10He's not there
00:11:13James, we were hoping to hear from James, we're not doing so
00:11:17So let's just quick reprise on what's happened in the Belgian Grand Prix so far
00:11:22Well, it was due to start at two o'clock local time
00:11:26But there was immediately a problem when Heinz-Harald Frentzen in the Prost
00:11:30In a magnificent fourth position on the grid, waved his arms to indicate that he had stalled his engine
00:11:37So the attempt was made to restart the race only for Juan Pablo Montoya
00:11:43In pole position to suffer the same problem
00:11:46So then we did get the race going and ran on lap five out of what was going to be a 43 lap race
00:11:55We had an appalling collision between Luciano Berti's Prost and Eddie Irvine's Jaguar
00:12:02We still haven't got any official news about the condition of Luciano Berti
00:12:07Otherwise I would have told you
00:12:09But of course the race was stopped, it's now been restarted
00:12:13It's a 36 lap race which was originally going to be a 44 lap race and then a 43 lap race
00:12:20And we're now on lap 16 which is getting on for half distance
00:12:25And Michael Schumacher who started in pole position effectively
00:12:30After his brother Ralph had been left with his Williams on the jacks
00:12:34When everybody else streaked away
00:12:37Michael Schumacher took the lead and looks as though he is on his way
00:12:41To his fifth official victory in Belgium, his sixth actual victory in Belgium
00:12:46But this superb battle for second and third and fourth and fifth
00:12:51And they are separated by about four seconds those two battles
00:12:55And the first one is something that we would never have expected to see
00:12:58A battle between Giancarlo Fisicala in the Renault-powered Benetton
00:13:03Who is keeping at bay David Coulthard
00:13:06Who of course is second in the world championship
00:13:09And there is that battle
00:13:11Actually that is Jenson Button I think defending from Ralph Schumacher
00:13:15Locking his right front into Le Combe
00:13:18Sorry Murray, I think that is definitely a different battle there
00:13:22But Button lapping a couple seconds slower than teammate Fisicala
00:13:26So clearly I would imagine some kind of problem
00:13:30Or he's not happy with the handling or something
00:13:31Because Button really on the back foot despite that sensational start
00:13:35To the second part of today's Grand Prix
00:13:37Yeah, Fisicala seems to have had the best of Benetton all season
00:13:41Of course, it's his fourth year with the team
00:13:43He really knows everybody in the team
00:13:46And that is a big, big advantage
00:13:48We tend to forget that it's only Jenson Button's second year of Grand Prix racing
00:13:53But I remind you that out of the race now
00:13:56Long gone are Heidfeldt, De La Rosa and Montoya
00:14:00Tarso Marquez, who is 15th out of the 15 people who are still running
00:14:04From the 22 who originally were to start
00:14:07Is one lap adrift
00:14:09The top 14 are all on the same lap
00:14:12And you're watching now the Minardi being lapped
00:14:16We're on lap 17 now
00:14:19And David Coulthard, try, try, try as he may
00:14:23And there's no question of Fisicala having to come in and make a pit stop
00:14:27And therefore running light on fuel
00:14:29Because he has already done that
00:14:31He's in, the McLaren of the fifth
00:14:33And the Benetton are racing on even terms
00:14:36And so are the McLaren there of Mika Häkkinen
00:14:38And the Ferrari of Rubens Barrichello
00:14:40Who are fourth and fifth
00:14:43Just to remind you that Eddie Irvine, of course, retired in the first part of the Grand Prix
00:14:48Therefore not able to restart
00:14:49As did Raikkonen and, of course, Luciano Berti
00:14:53Yeah, and David Coulthard is consolidating his second place
00:14:59In the Drivers' Championship at the present moment
00:15:02Because he is ahead of both his rivals
00:15:06He's in third place
00:15:07Rubens Barrichello is in fifth place
00:15:09And Ralf Schumacher is down in tenth place
00:15:12Not even in the points
00:15:14An awful, awful Belgian Grand Prix for Williams and BMW so far
00:15:19After having done so brilliantly yesterday
00:15:22In reading the qualifying weather conditions so right
00:15:26And getting Montoya and Ralf Schumacher out on dry weather tyres
00:15:30As the circuit dried out literally with seconds to go
00:15:34As a result of which they took pole and second positions on the grid
00:15:38With Montoya fastest, Ralf Schumacher second
00:15:41Out of the race is Montoya with a blown engine
00:15:46And Ralf Schumacher, who could have been right up at the front
00:15:48Is down in tenth place as a result of the shambles
00:15:52With him being left on the jacks when everybody got away
00:15:56Hakkinen managing to ease away a little bit
00:15:59Then from fifth place man Barrichello
00:16:02And there is Barrichello without a wing
00:16:04I think he's probably been across the grass at the bus stop
00:16:06That is why he's falling back
00:16:07And that's four and a third miles he's got to go
00:16:10Before he can drop into the pits for a 15 second nose change
00:16:14So Barrichello having a disastrous afternoon
00:16:17Good news for Coulthard, second in the World Championship
00:16:20Barrichello struggling
00:16:21And Ralf Schumacher back in tenth place
00:16:24So he will have such a terrible understeer
00:16:27He'll lose a good 10 to 15 seconds
00:16:29Look for the yellow Jordan in the background
00:16:31Because that's Jarno Trolli
00:16:33He's in sixth position
00:16:34He's bound to get past Rubens Barrichello
00:16:37Without the downforce on the Ferrari
00:16:39There is the new nose and wing waiting to go on
00:16:42But meantime Barrichello is having to feel his way around the circuit
00:16:46With massively reduced downforce
00:16:49And therefore grip on the steering wheels at the front
00:16:52Jarno Trolli is gaining on him hand over fist
00:16:54He was six seconds behind him
00:16:57Jarno Trolli is going to take fifth position
00:16:59And two World Championship points
00:17:01And his teammate Jorna Lacey who is currently seventh
00:17:04Mate, there is Trolli
00:17:06Trolli has caught Rubens Barrichello
00:17:08Who is still running fifth
00:17:09And through goes Trolli
00:17:11Up into fifth place, two World Championship points
00:17:13Now where is Jorna Lacey?
00:17:15There he is
00:17:16Jorna Lacey is going to move up into the points
00:17:19Jordan really, really, really need this
00:17:21Because they are down in sixth position in the World Championship
00:17:26And there is Lacey
00:17:28Barrichello can't stop of course, can't slow down
00:17:30He's got no downforce on his front tyres
00:17:33It's all at the back of the car
00:17:34No grip at all
00:17:35So that's why he's struggling
00:17:37Under braking everywhere
00:17:39And Lacey getting a good run-off at him through Stavelo
00:17:43And Rubens will have to be very careful in Blanchimont
00:17:46Otherwise he'll just drive straight off the road
00:17:48And he knows it only too well
00:17:50Luckily the front wing will already have been preset
00:17:53For whatever they started this race with
00:17:55In terms of setup he goes straight on into the pit lane
00:17:59Barrichello then falling back
00:18:01That was already Villeneuve about to take him
00:18:03James Allen is there
00:18:04Tremendously dramatic afternoon here at Spa once again
00:18:08As Rubens comes in without a front nose
00:18:10I can tell you there's been other drama as well
00:18:12Michael Schumacher
00:18:13How many times has he been lucky run off the course?
00:18:15He did it on the last lap at Stavelo
00:18:17And just missed the barrier
00:18:19Apparently Ferrari believe there is no damage to Michael's car
00:18:22Clearly there is to Rubens' car as the new nose goes on
00:18:25And fuel goes in as well
00:18:26And Rubens is back out in the race
00:18:29James, I must take it
00:18:30Jenson Button out of the race
00:18:32You can see he's gone into the wall in the Benetton
00:18:36And has removed his left front wheel
00:18:38He was in 10th position
00:18:39He's out of the race
00:18:40And here is a replay of what is happening
00:18:42Or what happened as Ralph Schumacher
00:18:45In the Williams in the background
00:18:47Waits to go through
00:18:49And the wing comes off before Schumacher went through
00:18:53So it was not a coming together
00:18:55Jenson Button must have dislodged the wing
00:18:57As he went over the rumble strip
00:18:59Yeah, he took the front wing off on the left-hand kerb
00:19:01Took too much kerb on the way in
00:19:02And then with the resultant understeer
00:19:04And the wing tucking itself underneath the front tyre
00:19:07You're going to go straight to the scene of the accident
00:19:09With the wall so close to the racetrack
00:19:11So we'll probably see that again
00:19:13And now this is, uh, that is, uh, interestingly
00:19:17Barrichello losing his front wing in exactly the same way
00:19:22Now all, all this is great news for Jordan
00:19:26As you watch Ralph Schumacher
00:19:28Continuing to claw his way through the field
00:19:31He is in 9th position at the present moment
00:19:34Barrichello there is back in the race
00:19:36But all this is great news for Jordan
00:19:38Who are aspiring to 4th place in the Constructors' Championship
00:19:42Sauber, who are currently in 4th place
00:19:45Uh, have already lost Nick Heidfeldt
00:19:48Kimi Räikkönen didn't start the race
00:19:50They'll score no points
00:19:52And both the Jordans of Jarno Trulli and John Alessia
00:19:56Are in the points at 4th and 5th places
00:19:59Ahead of both the BARs
00:20:01So Jordan are going to move up if they keep going
00:20:04Trulli for a scheduled stop
00:20:05He was the first of the first stoppers
00:20:08So it's not a surprise to see him in
00:20:10And, uh, so Jarno Trulli then was in 5th position
00:20:15As he came into the pits
00:20:16Teammate Alessia takes over that 5th position
00:20:19Lap times are slowing a bit
00:20:20I wonder with all this drama
00:20:22People flying off the road
00:20:23We haven't seen Michael Schumacher go off the road
00:20:25But we know that he has
00:20:27And survived to tell the story
00:20:28I wonder if it's just splitting with rain
00:20:30Louise Goodman
00:20:32The latest news that we have is
00:20:34Luciano Berti has been taken off to hospital
00:20:37No further news on his condition
00:20:39Eddie actually has just walked past
00:20:40He got straight into the motorhome
00:20:42I think he's actually been rather shaken by this incident
00:20:44He's been in the back of the truck
00:20:46Since the accident happened
00:20:47And as I say he's just gone straight into the motorhome
00:20:49So no further news on Luciano Berti
00:20:50As soon as we have something official
00:20:52We'll come back to you
00:20:53Thank you Louise
00:20:54We're on lap 20 out of 36
00:20:55In this restarted Belgian Grand Prix
00:20:58Michael Schumacher is stroking his way to victory
00:21:0127 seconds ahead of a battle
00:21:03Between Giancarlo Fisicale's Benetton
00:21:06Which you are looking at now
00:21:07The blue car
00:21:08Still pursued by David Coupard
00:21:10In the McLaren Mercedes
00:21:12Who can do nothing about the Benetton Renault
00:21:15The gap that separates them is six tenths of a second
00:21:19Micah Hacken and his fall for Lacey is fifth
00:21:21Trolley is in sixth position
00:21:23So both the Jordans are in the points
00:21:25Ahead of their Constructors Championship rivals
00:21:28BAR and Sauber
00:21:30Seventh is Villeneuve
00:21:31Eighth is Ralph Schumacher
00:21:32Ninth is Barrichello
00:21:33And tenth is Verstappen
00:21:34Three other runners still left
00:21:36Eleventh is Frentzen
00:21:38Twelfth Panis Berti Bernaldi
00:21:40Replay, I think it's just going to be Coulthard
00:21:42Getting a little bit sideways
00:21:44In the Fania chicanes
00:21:45Where he crashed on Friday quite heavily
00:21:46Back end of his car
00:21:48Quite loose through there
00:21:49But I hope that all of the teams
00:21:51Have radioed their drivers
00:21:52Certainly with Ferrari and Benetton
00:21:54In particular
00:21:55Radio their drivers to say
00:21:57Give the kerb on the way into the bus stop
00:21:59Plenty of respect
00:22:01Otherwise we're going to see more people
00:22:02Lose their front wing
00:22:04In that particular corner
00:22:05Why Martin?
00:22:06It hasn't happened in the past
00:22:07Low, right, high tyre kerbs
00:22:09And what's happened is that
00:22:11They've knocked the cones over in there
00:22:12So they're taking a tighter line
00:22:14Louise Goodwin
00:22:14Yeah, with Juan Pablo and Montoya
00:22:16Juan Pablo, it's been a bit of a dramatic day for you
00:22:18One way or another
00:22:19Yeah, I think, you know
00:22:20It's a very difficult day for all of us
00:22:21You know, especially after the Chennais crash
00:22:24And apart from that, you know
00:22:25You know, another tough day in the office
00:22:28I think we've been quite unlucky
00:22:30But, you know, it was pretty interesting
00:22:32Passing cars and play around with it
00:22:34It was pretty interesting
00:22:35Thanks for talking
00:22:36Well, one way or another
00:22:38He's had terrible luck this season
00:22:39It's the 14th race of the year
00:22:41It's the 10th time he's retired
00:22:43He could have won at least two races
00:22:46Don't forget he was taken out of the Brazilian Grand Prix
00:22:48When he was in the lead
00:22:50When he passed Josper Stappen's arrows
00:22:53And it moved across and removed Montoya
00:22:56He could have won at least one other race
00:22:58He started from pole position
00:23:00This man's day will come
00:23:02But it's obviously not here
00:23:04Eddie Jordan
00:23:06Talking to either Alessi or Trulli
00:23:09And we're on lap 22
00:23:11With 14 of this very, very eventful Belgian Grand Prix
00:23:16On the finest Grand Prix circuit in the world
00:23:18And more news from Luis
00:23:20Yes, and I'm pleased to say it's good news, Mario
00:23:22Got the official words on Luciano Berti's condition
00:23:24He has concussion
00:23:26But he has no broken bones
00:23:27And his condition is described as stable
00:23:29As we already know, he's been taken off to hospital
00:23:31And re-aged
00:23:32But good news there about Luciano
00:23:34Good news is a masterpiece of understatement, Luis
00:23:37I am absolutely amazed
00:23:40That was a big, big, big accident
00:23:43And I cannot start to tell you how relieved I am
00:23:47To hear that wonderful news
00:23:50As now into the pit lane comes Jacques Villeneuve
00:23:54From fifth position
00:23:56This is his second stop
00:23:5815 laps still to go
00:24:01And as usual
00:24:02This concentrated action from the mechanics
00:24:05One of them, two of them clear out the side pods
00:24:07To make sure there's no debris in front of the radiators
00:24:10Nice stop, eight seconds
00:24:12He sprints out
00:24:13He was 1.2 seconds ahead of Ralf Schumacher
00:24:17Who will have now moved up
00:24:19And is in the points
00:24:21Quite incredible
00:24:22Ralf Schumacher who started last
00:24:25After they got his car
00:24:26With four wheels off the ground onto it
00:24:29And he'd stormed round and tried to catch everybody up
00:24:31He's now in the points out of the 13 drivers who are left
00:24:35But of course he has yet to stop a second time
00:24:39Which is what Villeneuve has just done
00:24:42As we look at David Coulthard
00:24:44Still looking at the gearbox of the Benetton in front of him
00:24:48Thinking, thinking, thinking
00:24:50How can I get past?
00:24:51And with a gap like that
00:24:53He is not going to
00:24:54Yeah, they're gonna have to get the back end of that McLaren bolted down a bit more somehow
00:24:58But so often this last few Grands Prix
00:25:00You've seen Hakkinen and Coulthard oversteering on the exit of corners
00:25:04But that Benetton surely has a beautiful balance today
00:25:08Fisichella really not struggling at all
00:25:10And he's got a genuine pace there
00:25:12So it's nip and tuck between the pyramids
00:25:14Stayed at six or seven tenths pretty much
00:25:18For 10 laps now between these two
00:25:20But Coulthard really can't make a big impression on the Benetton
00:25:23And that's where the Benetton is so fast
00:25:25Traction out of La Source
00:25:27Gosh, it will be an enormous fillet for Benetton and for Renault
00:25:32And for Formula 1 if Fisichella can stay where he is
00:25:35Because what we all want to see is not one constructor
00:25:39Not Ferrari, not McLaren, not anybody else dominating the scene
00:25:43This year we've seen Ferrari and McLaren who've done so for so long
00:25:48Being caught and passed and losing races to Williams
00:25:52It would be lovely if next year there's a fourth team up there as well
00:25:55But have a look at the rear wing of David Coulthard's McLaren
00:25:59It looks unusually oil-grimed and dirty to me
00:26:03It reminds me of Damon Hill's Williams in 1996 in Australia
00:26:08Which was taking oil from Villeneuve's car which was in front of him
00:26:12And Villeneuve had to pull out of the race and Damon Hill won it
00:26:16Yes, I saw Coulthard a few laps ago wiping his visor coming past the pit straight
00:26:20Very dramatically
00:26:21There's much to say to the team
00:26:22There's oil coming our way
00:26:24But it won't affect the performance of his car in any way, shape or form
00:26:28But it won't help him see through his visor
00:26:31I think I can see the Benetton mechanics out in the pit lane
00:26:35Which must only be for Gincarlo Fisichella
00:26:39Because Jenson Button is in the wall and out of the race
00:26:43So will Fisichella pit at the end of this lap?
00:26:46Michael Schumacher's 29 seconds ahead now and he's backed his pace off
00:26:49So Michael with such a big lead
00:26:51And having had that scare that we've heard about by going off at Stavelo
00:26:55And where does he go?
00:26:56He does indeed go into the pit lane
00:26:58Yeah, Gincarlo Fisichella in
00:27:01David Coulthard not in
00:27:03So he will move up into second place
00:27:05And of course this will be the signal for Coulthard to get the hammer down
00:27:08Now that he's got Fisichella out of his way
00:27:11And trying to build up a gap before he has to come in
00:27:14In the hope that when he comes out after his stop
00:27:17He will be in front of Fisichella time
00:27:19We'll tell
00:27:20Yeah, he's only got to find six or seven tenths
00:27:22Has Coulthard on an in or an out lap
00:27:25Or during the pit stop
00:27:26And who was that in the background?
00:27:27Hakanen
00:27:28Hakanen in for a stop too
00:27:30So Coulthard we know was fuelled
00:27:32It looked like three or four laps longer on the first stints looking at the data here
00:27:36So Coulthard we know can go a little
00:27:38Well we assume can go a little bit further
00:27:40We don't know how much fuel they put in Coulthard's car at the first stop
00:27:44Certainly leapfrogged him past the Ferrari of Barrichello
00:27:49And Hakanen comes out alongside Ralf Schumacher
00:27:51Who passes him and gets ahead of the McLaren
00:27:54That is not going to help Mika at all
00:27:57But Ralf Schumacher moves up a place
00:27:59This race is really coming alive
00:28:02We're on lap 24 out of 36
00:28:05The crowd and the weather incidentally which I had expected
00:28:07And Mika Hakanen does to Ralf Schumacher what he did to his brother last year
00:28:12Except that Ricciardo Zonta is not there this time
00:28:15Just shows you how many revs they've knocked out of that BMW engine
00:28:18It's twice this afternoon
00:28:19The fastest car in a straight line easily in qualifying
00:28:23Has just been breezed past by a Ferrari first
00:28:26Then a McLaren
00:28:27So they've really kicked that BMW engine
00:28:30To make sure it can get to the end of the race
00:28:32Ralf clearly short shifting there
00:28:34Losing an enormous amount of straight line speed
00:28:37And we're on lap 25 with Michael Schumacher
00:28:40Who we have seen hardly anything of in this race
00:28:43Because it's a demonstration race as far as he's concerned
00:28:47And as I say that we see him on the screen
00:28:50Just to establish that the brilliant four times a world champion German
00:28:55Is on his way to his 52nd Grand Prix
00:28:57As in comes David Coulthard
00:28:59Now when he rejoins where is Fisichella going to be?
00:29:02But now James over to you
00:29:04It's going to be very very marginal indeed
00:29:06Coulthard needed a good in lap
00:29:08He's only been one lap since Fisichella made his stop
00:29:11This has got to be pretty crisp as well from McLaren
00:29:13Seven seconds they're looking for in a perfect world
00:29:16Try and nip him
00:29:17Slightly slow off the fuel hose
00:29:18He should do it Murray
00:29:19Fisichella was 8.4
00:29:21Coulthard 7.2
00:29:23Look look look there is Fisichella
00:29:25And he passes the pit lane exit
00:29:28Before just marginally before David Coulthard
00:29:31They are in exactly the same positions
00:29:34As they were before the pit stop
00:29:36And that will be heartbreaking for David Coulthard
00:29:38Who tried so hard
00:29:40When Fisichella had gone into the pits
00:29:43To go faster and be able to get ahead
00:29:45He has failed
00:29:46We don't think they changed the tyres on Fisichella's car
00:29:49At the pit stop
00:29:50We're not absolutely sure
00:29:51We haven't
00:29:52We they did not change the tyres on Fisichella's car at the pit stop
00:29:56So quite clearly he liked the balance of it so much
00:29:59And the wear rate clearly not that high around here
00:30:02So on this shortened race
00:30:04So Fisichella then just fuelled up
00:30:07And can Coulthard do anything about it on this stint
00:30:10The final stint of the Grand Prix
00:30:11Bit of a gamble for Fisichella
00:30:13Who is on Michelin tyres of course
00:30:17And here is Michael Schumacher
00:30:19Coming in for his stop
00:30:22With a lead of 37 seconds
00:30:25So he can refuel
00:30:27Change all four wheels
00:30:29Take his helmet off
00:30:30Have a smoke and a cup of tea
00:30:31Put him on back again
00:30:33And rejoin in the lead
00:30:35A massive massive lead
00:30:38And a very slick stop from Ferrari
00:30:407.7 seconds
00:30:42Which is 7 tenths of a second faster than the quick one we have just seen
00:30:47And Michael Schumacher tours out of the pits
00:30:50He's still going to be in the lead
00:30:52He has not lost it
00:30:54And this is his 26th lap
00:30:5610 laps coming up at the end of this one
00:31:00For the conclusion of the Belgian Grand Prix
00:31:03With the positions for second and third still unchanged
00:31:07And David Coulthard having a real go now
00:31:10Of course he's on fresh tyres
00:31:11And Fisichella isn't
00:31:13And this could make all the difference
00:31:16David having a bit of a fake look down the inside there
00:31:19Now let's see if Fisichella's still got a traction advantage
00:31:22Of course he's always going to be
00:31:23He has indeed, hasn't he?
00:31:24But he's always going to be on the throttle
00:31:25One car length earlier
00:31:27But the Benetton-Renault definitely clawing its way out of the slow corners
00:31:32In a very effective manner
00:31:33Not dissimilar to the way they both left the start line
00:31:36On both the starts this afternoon
00:31:38But this is where Coulthard passed him in the first race
00:31:41And he's not close enough this time around
00:31:43But that's where it's going to happen if it happens
00:31:45And that's where Hakkinen passed Schumacher last year
00:31:49With that incredible passing manoeuvre
00:31:52When Schumacher went to the left of Riccardo Zonta
00:31:55And Hakkinen went to the right
00:31:57And Mika Hakkinen came out in front and won the race
00:32:00First and second were Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher
00:32:04Who's got this quite incredible record here in Belgium
00:32:07Second last year
00:32:09First in 92
00:32:10First in 94, only to be excluded
00:32:13First in 95
00:32:1496 and 97
00:32:16Is he going to be first in 2001?
00:32:18Well, David Coulthard, as I said
00:32:21If he finishes second or third
00:32:23He's going to increase the gap between himself
00:32:27And the third place man in the Drivers' Championship
00:32:30Who is Rubens Barrichello
00:32:32Who is still ahead, of course, of Ralf Schumacher
00:32:34Great order on lap 26
00:32:3636th lap race
00:32:38Michael Schumacher leads Fisichella and Coulthard
00:32:41That you can see there
00:32:42Battling for second place
00:32:44Ahead of Mika Hakkinen fourth and Ralf Schumacher
00:32:47Separated by eight seconds
00:32:49Jarno Trulli is in sixth place
00:32:51His teammate, John Alessi
00:32:53And then look at this!
00:32:54Okay, close Coulthard is this time around
00:32:56But not quite close enough
00:32:58Updated information from the pit lane
00:33:00They just changed the rears on Fisichella's car, apparently
00:33:04And not the front
00:33:06So two new rears
00:33:07Leaving the front
00:33:08They do look, look
00:33:09There's hardly any groove left in his front tyres
00:33:11But Coulthard looking more menacing this time around
00:33:15Yeah, obviously it's a balance question
00:33:18Because they could have put on new fronts in the time that it took on
00:33:23To put on new rears
00:33:24Yeah, it's not a pit stop saving issue
00:33:26It's the tyres quite clearly work better
00:33:28I mean, it's a slick
00:33:29He's got slick front tyres on, effectively
00:33:31Which is sort of squeezing the very extreme edge of the envelope
00:33:35Of the regulations there
00:33:36But look at Fisichella's left front
00:33:39It is virtually bald
00:33:40No grooves in that one
00:33:42They're coming up to lap Bernal Verstappen
00:33:45They've already lapped
00:33:46As has Michael Schumacher, of course
00:33:49Enrico Bernaldi, who is 13th out of the 14 runners
00:33:53And Olivier Pannis, who is 12th
00:33:55Now they're coming up to Jos Verstappen
00:33:58Who is in 11th place in the arrows
00:34:01And here we're looking back at the replay
00:34:03Of Mika Häkkinen going into the bus stop
00:34:06Getting it cross-threaded
00:34:07Going over the grass
00:34:09Easing off just to keep the front wing clear of the ground
00:34:13Regaining race pace
00:34:15And of course he was 16 seconds ahead of Jarno Trulli
00:34:18So although he's lost time
00:34:20It won't have affected his position
00:34:22And now Fisichella and Coulthard
00:34:25Can see Verstappen's lapped
00:34:27Or about to be lapped arrows
00:34:28Getting closer and closer
00:34:30It's crucial now for Fisichella
00:34:32But he gets past at the right moment
00:34:34And hopefully before David Coulthard can do so
00:34:36But it won't happen on this lap
00:34:39Look how dirty Coulthard's car is from...
00:34:42It must be, clearly having followed him so long
00:34:44From the Benetton of Fisichella
00:34:47A lot of engine oil
00:34:49And can Fisichella get to the end of this motor race
00:34:52From a reliability point of view
00:34:53Certainly from a performance point of view
00:34:55Doesn't have too much of a problem at the moment
00:34:57But without doubt in this third sector of the race
00:35:00It's Coulthard with the faster car
00:35:03And David, that looks a touch of a squeeze
00:35:06And they both go through inside
00:35:08Inside the arrows
00:35:09They shall not pass
00:35:11The Maginot Line policy
00:35:12From Giancarlo Fisichella
00:35:15In the French engine
00:35:17With the Renault Benetton
00:35:19And he stays ahead of David Coulthard
00:35:21What a wonderful season David Coulthard has had
00:35:24He's had three retirements
00:35:26But he's done so well in all the others
00:35:27Coulthard's got a good run through Eau Rouge this time around
00:35:30Can he sweep around the outside?
00:35:32Indeed he can
00:35:33Beautiful move from David Coulthard
00:35:35Somehow or other Fisichella wrong footed in Eau Rouge
00:35:38We saw him with a big advantage into Eau Rouge
00:35:41But somehow he lost it in the middle
00:35:43Coulthard getting a good slingshot
00:35:44And making it stick around the outside
00:35:47Now I believe with that faster car
00:35:49Coulthard will begin to pull away in a clear second place
00:35:53So can he do something about Michael Schumacher's lead?
00:35:56Not enough of course
00:35:58Because Michael Schumacher is half a minute up the road now
00:36:02He's 30 seconds ahead of David Coulthard
00:36:06Second placed at McLaren
00:36:09As the Scotsman comes up to Lap Tasso Marquez
00:36:12Leather E-Glo
00:36:13Yeah and he had the extra straight line speed
00:36:16And when you have the inside it's dirtier, it's bumpier
00:36:19You know you have to brake early
00:36:20And so does the guy trying to pass you around the outside
00:36:23He's got the clean line and the confidence
00:36:26And well David put a lot of trust into Fisichella there
00:36:29That he wouldn't just lock a wheel and slide straight into the side of him too
00:36:32But I think Fisichella's an old enough hand now
00:36:35That you would put the safety of your chassis in his hands
00:36:39Yeah 88 Grand Prix for Giancarlo Fisichella
00:36:43And he's a very equitable level-headed chap
00:36:46He wasn't going to do anything silly
00:36:48And David Coulthard is now really pulling away from the Benetton
00:36:53But if Fisichella can finish in a podium position
00:36:57That is to say in third place
00:36:59It would be the first time this year that a Benetton has been there
00:37:23The lead in the race
00:37:25Hakkinen currently a good three seconds, two seconds faster than Giancarlo Fisichella
00:37:31That would mean that he would be in fourth place
00:37:34Because Giancarlo Fisichella, it won't be true that we won't see him on the podium
00:37:40Round time of Fisichella 1.55.0 and of Hakkinen 2.58
00:37:46Barricello still has to get the point
00:37:49But then I have to go over to the worn out Jean Alesi
00:37:52Here Ralf Schumacher is on his way with 4.9
00:37:56And he's past it
00:37:57Eighth position now for Ralf Schumacher
00:37:594.9 falls back to ninth place
00:38:01Alesi, who is not far ahead, is that one point that everyone is going for
00:38:09Trudy there again in fifth place
00:38:13And here the battle between the Frenchman and the Brazilian
00:38:16Jean Alesi defeated, you could say, by Alain Prost
00:38:22Officially they were going to have a good discussion
00:38:24But he had said some nasty things about his team
00:38:27Jean Alesi forced a break because he knew he had to get a seat at Jordi's
00:38:32He hopes to win a podium there again on a beautiful day
00:38:35It could have been a day like that today
00:38:37They weren't too far behind on the grid
00:38:40But one point would be very nice for Jean Alesi
00:38:44Barricello would also like it
00:38:46And what to think of Mr. Ralf Schumacher, who is right behind him
00:38:51Who just passed Villeneuve
00:38:53Currently driving slowly is Michael Schumacher
00:38:56Gives a good one and a half second lead to David Kortax
00:39:01But of course he knows that there are only seven rounds left
00:39:03While we see the battle here between Barricello and Jean Alesi
00:39:07With, I think, back there again
00:39:09Ralf Schumacher
00:39:11Yes
00:39:13And that's Villeneuve
00:39:15The cameramen are even crawling into the kerbstones
00:39:21In Belgium
00:39:23And look at this battle for sixth position
00:39:25The vital one world championship point
00:39:27Jean Alesi
00:39:29The French-Sicilian veteran in the Jordan
00:39:31Is staving off Barricello
00:39:33Behind Barricello, trying to take him now
00:39:35As they come up to Les Combes
00:39:37Is Ralf Schumacher, who started last
00:39:39And has fought his way up to seventh
00:39:41Can he make it sixth?
00:39:43Can he make it fifth?
00:39:45I suspect Ralf Schumacher has been told to rev the engine harder now
00:39:47Not going to score any points anyway
00:39:49If he blows up
00:39:51And he's not going to score points
00:39:53Unless he passes at least one of those cars in front of him
00:39:55So suddenly Ralf Schumacher
00:39:57With more straight line speed now
00:39:59And Jean Alesi grimly hanging on
00:40:01To try to score an important world championship point
00:40:03For the Jordan team
00:40:05His teammate Jarno, truly
00:40:073.7 seconds up the road
00:40:09In fifth place
00:40:11So Michael Schumacher, 30 seconds ahead of Coulthard
00:40:13Who's pulled away
00:40:15Four seconds from Fisichella
00:40:17And eight seconds further down from Fisichella
00:40:19Truly Alesi, and this squabble you're looking at now
00:40:21Yeah, there's no battle for first, second or third places
00:40:23With six laps to go
00:40:25Including the one they are on
00:40:27And I don't think Mikko Häkkinen can catch Fisichella
00:40:29But my goodness
00:40:31There's going to be a battle for fifth, sixth and seventh
00:40:33Because Jarno Trulli
00:40:35In fifth position in the Jordan
00:40:37Oh no, he's well clear of Jean Alesi
00:40:39I say there's going to be a colossal scrap
00:40:41There is a colossal scrap
00:40:43You're looking at it
00:40:45First world championship point
00:40:47For sixth place
00:40:49And if Jean Alesi can get it
00:40:51In only his second drive
00:40:53For Jordan
00:40:55Having scored
00:40:57Twice already for the Prost team
00:40:59Previously
00:41:01He will be elated
00:41:03He's famous for taking off his helmet
00:41:05And throwing it into the crowd
00:41:07Helmets don't cost all that much
00:41:09But they're full of extremely expensive radio equipment
00:41:11And I don't think Jordan
00:41:13Will be in a position to do it
00:41:15Let's hope for their sake
00:41:17That he changes his mind this time
00:41:19If he finishes in the points
00:41:21If he does, it will be a magnificent achievement
00:41:23He's the most experienced Grand Prix driver
00:41:25Of them all this year
00:41:27It is his 198th
00:41:29Grand Prix
00:41:31And Jean Alesi at L'Ecombe
00:41:33On lap 31 out of 36
00:41:35Leads Barry Kellow
00:41:37Who is seventh
00:41:39Leads Ralf Schumacher who is eighth
00:41:41And in seventh is Jacques Villeneuve
00:41:43In the B.A.R.
00:41:45Well they've all stopped twice as anticipated
00:41:47Alesi had a relatively travel free run
00:41:49Of course Barry Kellow had to stop for a new nose
00:41:51Ralf Schumacher started at the back
00:41:53Of the restarted race
00:41:55After being left stranded
00:41:57On the jacks
00:41:59The mechanics not quite getting the car down in time
00:42:01And having to get off the grid
00:42:03So Jean Alesi then
00:42:05Grimly trying to hang on still
00:42:07As he heads towards the final chicane
00:42:09Not having enough speed
00:42:11Given that Barry Kellow is in his dirty air
00:42:13And you just see Trulli
00:42:15Was moving out of the foreground of your screen
00:42:17As they came into this chicane
00:42:19Yeah and it appears to me that Jacques Villeneuve
00:42:21Has pulled the bung out
00:42:23It looks to me visually
00:42:25As though he's closing marginally
00:42:27On Ralf Schumacher in eighth place ahead of him
00:42:29To make it hopefully a four car train battle
00:42:31For that sixth position
00:42:33Michael Schumacher
00:42:35Race leader
00:42:37All the way
00:42:39Once again the luck has been with him
00:42:41Because when he started this race
00:42:43Juan Pablo Montoya
00:42:45The pole position holder in the Williams
00:42:47Had had to go to the back
00:42:49And his brother Ralf
00:42:51Was still up on the jacks
00:42:53So good fortune has once again
00:42:55Come Michael Schumacher's way
00:42:57But as ever he has exploited it
00:42:59Superbly
00:43:01His lead has dropped to
00:43:0326 seconds
00:43:05A colossal advantage
00:43:07With only four laps to go at the end
00:43:09Of this one
00:43:11And David Coulthard therefore is closing up on him
00:43:13In fact on the previous lap
00:43:15He was about two and a half seconds faster
00:43:17But I'm sure that's because Michael Schumacher
00:43:19Experienced as he is, is pacing himself
00:43:21Barry Kellow in a very good position there
00:43:23Jean Alessi necessarily having to defend his line
00:43:25And well
00:43:27I really thought Jean would just spear forwards
00:43:29There and be the last of the late breakers
00:43:31Didn't do so
00:43:33I didn't defend as aggressively as I expected
00:43:35Alessi to be
00:43:37Given that it's for the final point of the afternoon
00:43:39No point in finishing seventh
00:43:41In any Grand Prix, especially this one
00:43:43So Barry Kellow moves into
00:43:45An all important point scoring position
00:43:47Yes, so look at the cap he's built
00:43:49In just a few hundred yards
00:43:51As Ralf Schumacher now
00:43:53Decides he's going to have a go
00:43:55Here's the replay, up to Lacombe
00:43:57From behind his rear wing and slipstream
00:43:59Out of the dirty air goes Rubens
00:44:01Barry Kellow moves across
00:44:03Jean Alessi has to give way
00:44:05And defer, which gives
00:44:07Ralf Schumacher the opportunity to move
00:44:09Up a bit in eighth
00:44:11Position and Jacques Villeneuve
00:44:13Is two seconds behind this
00:44:15Battle you're looking at now
00:44:17But two seconds is a long way in terms
00:44:19Of track distance, this is
00:44:21Lap 33, we've still
00:44:23Therefore got lap 34 and
00:44:25Bang, out goes the Jordan of
00:44:27Jarno Trulli, that means to say
00:44:29That Alessi is back in the points again
00:44:31And Rubens Barry Kellow
00:44:33Moves up another place
00:44:35Another
00:44:37Heartbreaking end of race situation
00:44:39For Eddie Jordan's team
00:44:41Poor old Eddie Jordan, poor the Jordan team
00:44:43They don't deserve that, they really don't
00:44:45They just had Alessi moved out of a point
00:44:47Scoring position, just as Trulli blows up
00:44:49They were on for three points
00:44:51And all of a sudden, they're on
00:44:53Well, of course Alessi moves back a point
00:44:55Back into sixth now, with the demise
00:44:57Of his teammate, so suddenly they're
00:44:59Down to just one point, and Alessi
00:45:01Under severe pressure from
00:45:03Ralf Schumacher as well, so
00:45:05Maybe still Jordan could go
00:45:07Home without any world championship
00:45:09Points, and that is not what they deserve
00:45:11No, they need this one point
00:45:13From Jean Alessi to have
00:45:15The same number as BAR
00:45:17Their Honda engine rivals in the
00:45:19Constructors championship, which have
00:45:21Put them in fifth place, and yet again
00:45:23Poor Jarno Trulli is
00:45:25Out of the race, that's the sixth time
00:45:27He's retired this year, and you
00:45:29Can see he's banging his head
00:45:31On his arms in sheer frustration
00:45:33As Michael Schumacher
00:45:35Exits the bus stop to
00:45:37Conclude his thirty-third
00:45:39Lap, so he's got about
00:45:41Thirteen or fourteen
00:45:43Miles to go now
00:45:45For the fifth victory
00:45:47I thought for a moment
00:45:49That Barrichello had slowed up
00:45:51A bit there, as he came out
00:45:53Of the corner on his way up to
00:45:55The bus stop, but still
00:45:57Ralf Schumacher is pursuing
00:45:59Jean Alessi, and now
00:46:01It's for a world championship point
00:46:03If Ralf can get ahead
00:46:05Of the Jordan, it will be to move
00:46:07Up into sixth place, and as
00:46:09Martin has pointed out, he might as well go
00:46:11For broke, if he blows the BMW engine
00:46:13Up, he's lost nothing, if it
00:46:15Stays together, unlike that of his
00:46:17Teammate, Pablo Montoya
00:46:19He will get a world championship
00:46:21Point, now Schumacher
00:46:23Was alleged to have said something rather
00:46:25Disparaging about Montoya, when
00:46:27The Colombian blew his engine up, leading
00:46:29The German Grand Prix at Hockenheim
00:46:31Which the telemetry disproved
00:46:33But the fact remains
00:46:35That again, it's been Montoya's
00:46:37Engine that's gone, and so far
00:46:39Ralf Schumacher's has not
00:46:41Michael Schumacher is now
00:46:43On lap thirty-four, out of
00:46:45Thirty-six, there's his lead
00:46:47And Coulthard has
00:46:49Stretched the gap between himself and
00:46:51Fisichella, who he just passed
00:46:53To ten seconds, Fisichella
00:46:55Ten seconds ahead of Hockenheim
00:46:57The first four places looking
00:46:59Established, as is
00:47:01Fifth for Barrichello
00:47:03Who has speeded up and is marginally
00:47:05Catching Micah Hockenheim, but what a
00:47:07Scrap for that last championship point
00:47:09Now how many revs will Ralf Schumacher
00:47:11Be using down the straight
00:47:13Surely he's in the absolute
00:47:15Ideal position to give it a little bit extra
00:47:17And now he's not close
00:47:19Enough, so this time
00:47:21Around on the out, managing to stay on the
00:47:23Outside, and Lacey
00:47:25Could take that better line into
00:47:27LeCun's chicane and
00:47:29Retains position, three laps remaining
00:47:31Of course. Same sort of situation
00:47:33That Micah Hockenheim had with
00:47:35Michael Schumacher last year
00:47:37Because having spun, the fin
00:47:39In the McLaren Mercedes
00:47:41Started catching Michael Schumacher
00:47:43He tried to get past him at LeCun
00:47:45At one point, only to
00:47:47Virtually have his nose chopped off by the
00:47:49Ferrari, as Michael Schumacher
00:47:51Established his racing line
00:47:53But it was on the very next lap
00:47:55That Micah Hockenheim did that incredible
00:47:57Move, which took him past Zonta
00:47:59To lap him, and Schumacher
00:48:01Michael to take the lead, lap
00:48:0335 for Michael Schumacher
00:48:05Now, just this one
00:48:07And the next one between him
00:48:09And yet another ten
00:48:11World championship points to
00:48:13Take him over the century
00:48:15To give him 104
00:48:17World championship points
00:48:19He's breaking record after record
00:48:21If he wins this race, he's going to beat
00:48:23Prost's all-time record
00:48:25Ralf's got a chance into the bus stop
00:48:27He's clearly in the zone here
00:48:29How late is Lacey on the brakes?
00:48:31Later than we saw when Barrichello
00:48:33Passed him, that's for sure
00:48:35So Jean, now fighting harder than ever
00:48:37To score a world championship point
00:48:39I think when Jean sees a replay
00:48:41Passing him, he'll be annoyed with himself
00:48:43For not fighting a little bit harder on that one
00:48:45But now he's giving absolutely
00:48:47All he's got
00:48:49Well, with Michael Schumacher on his 35th lap
00:48:51People before this race
00:48:53Began were saying
00:48:55Will Michael Schumacher let Barrichello
00:48:57Win the race, and
00:48:59Therefore strengthen his position
00:49:01To be second in the Drivers' Championship
00:49:03By passing David Coulthard
00:49:05Well, first of all, to do that, of course
00:49:07He's got to be in a position with Barrichello
00:49:09Behind him, that's not the case
00:49:11Now Schumacher's having a go again
00:49:13Now, can he get inside?
00:49:15And Lacey once again turns across
00:49:17The front of the Williams BMW
00:49:19He is absolutely determined
00:49:21But he is going to have that sixth position
00:49:23On the world championship point that goes with it
00:49:25And not Ralf Schumacher
00:49:27But Ralf Schumacher will know what the score is
00:49:29He will know that on the next lap
00:49:31He's got to be that much closer to Lacey
00:49:33Than he was on this one
00:49:35And Lacey will know the same thing
00:49:37I can bet that Lacey's spending nearly as much time
00:49:39Looking in his mirrors
00:49:41As he is looking ahead of him
00:49:43And Michael Schumacher is now
00:49:45On his last, potentially
00:49:47Victorious lap
00:49:49Of the 2001 Belgian
00:49:51Grand Prix
00:49:53He's got 772 world championship
00:49:55Points already
00:49:57It will be 782
00:49:59He will only be 16 points behind
00:50:0116.5 points
00:50:03Behind Alain Prost
00:50:05A lifetime point scoring record
00:50:07If Schumacher wins here
00:50:09I say, we haven't seen much of him
00:50:11But he's had another great drive
00:50:13And his brother's doing the same thing
00:50:15That's exactly where
00:50:17Bertie and Eddie Irvine
00:50:19Got together, but Ralf
00:50:21Then just backing out of that scenario
00:50:23Lacey is 11 years older
00:50:25Than the man pursuing him
00:50:27He's going to be feeling extremely tired
00:50:29It's been a long and difficult afternoon
00:50:31And, but he's using
00:50:33Those 11 years of experience to keep
00:50:35That 6th position at the moment
00:50:37And Ralf's in very slow in the bus stop
00:50:39But very, very good under braking
00:50:41And here we are on the last lap
00:50:43Michael Schumacher
00:50:45Exiting turn 13
00:50:47In this 22 corner
00:50:494.4 mile
00:50:51Spa-Francorchamps circuit
00:50:53A brilliant driver's circuit
00:50:55And it suits him
00:50:57He is a brilliant driver
00:50:59Not very far now to go
00:51:01To give him the all-time
00:51:03Record in terms of
00:51:05World Championship wins
00:51:0752 victories
00:51:09Alain Prost has been saying
00:51:11I hope he does it soon
00:51:13I'm getting sick of people talking to me
00:51:15About whether he's going to do it
00:51:17Well he is going to do it
00:51:19Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari
00:51:21Is coming up to win his 8th race
00:51:23Of the season
00:51:25And his most ever is 9
00:51:27With Nigel Mansell
00:51:29Michael Schumacher wins
00:51:31And becomes the most successful
00:51:33Grand Prix driver of all time
00:51:35As David Coulthard
00:51:37Slides the McLaren through the bus stop
00:51:39To finish in 2nd place
00:51:41Michael Schumacher
00:51:43Clearly the driver of the day
00:51:45He kept his head through all of that
00:51:47Whilst peerlessly off into the distance
00:51:49Very, very strong drive from Coulthard as well
00:51:51A well-deserved 6 points
00:51:53And a well-deserved podium place
00:51:55For this man Fisichella
00:51:57Fishing 17 seconds down
00:51:59On Coulthard on the end
00:52:01Faded towards the end
00:52:03But Hakkinen with a moderately lacklustre
00:52:05For him, especially afternoon
00:52:07Down in 4th place
00:52:0936 seconds off the lead
00:52:11But Michael Schumacher was just
00:52:13Spawning around at the end
00:52:15He came 6 seconds away
00:52:17In the last lap alone did Michael Schumacher
00:52:19Yeah there's Barrichello finishing 5th
00:52:21But who's going to be 6th
00:52:23Is it going to be John Alessi
00:52:25And there is the answer
00:52:27It's going to be John Alessi
00:52:29John Alessi in his second race for Jordan
00:52:31Retrieved something for the team
00:52:33With a quite superlative
00:52:35Fighting drive to 6th position
00:52:37And a single world championship
00:52:39Point
00:52:41But mostly unseen by us
00:52:43And of course the heartbroken
00:52:45Jarno Trulli
00:52:47This has been Michael Schumacher's day
00:52:49And he quietly
00:52:51Contemplates things
00:52:53I don't think the numbers
00:52:55Mean all that much to him
00:52:57Herbie Blash says well done Michael
00:53:01I would be surprised if we see
00:53:03Any euphoric jumps for joy
00:53:05From Michael Schumacher on the podium
00:53:07At this race
00:53:09It's been a pretty tense one
00:53:11And a pretty fraught one for all of us
00:53:13After that appalling accident to Luciano Berti
00:53:15And let us hope the news
00:53:17We had from Louise Goodman
00:53:19That he seems to be alright
00:53:21That is indeed true
00:53:23But a wonderful day for Benetton too
00:53:25And Ralph Schumacher
00:53:27Well, I was going to say
00:53:29He doesn't seem to be too happy
00:53:31He's pretty elated about something
00:53:33I think it was the fighting drive he had
00:53:35With John Alessi who has actually
00:53:37Got back with his helmet
00:53:39Intact on his head and not disappearing
00:53:41Into the crowd
00:53:43So confirmation, a wonderful win
00:53:45Which makes him the most successful Grand Prix driver
00:53:47Of all time
00:53:49In red, the Red Baron
00:53:51Michael Schumacher from Köppen
00:53:53In Germany
00:53:55David Coulthard has consolidated
00:53:57His second place in the
00:53:59Drivers World Championship
00:54:01With three races still to go
00:54:03And a superb podium third place
00:54:05For Fisichella
00:54:07And for Benetton
00:54:09The day after it's announced
00:54:11That he will be moving to Jordan next year
00:54:13Micah Hakkanen makes it
00:54:15Two McLarens in the top four
00:54:17And Rubens Barrichello makes it
00:54:19Two Ferraris in the top five
00:54:21A point for John Alessi
00:54:23And Jordan
00:54:25Means that the Jordan team are now
00:54:27Tying with BAR
00:54:29For the fifth place in the
00:54:31Constructors Championship
00:54:33Four points behind Sauber
00:54:35And no change in the top three
00:54:37Of the Drivers Championship
00:54:39Of course
00:54:41And Rubens Barrichello, the gap between him
00:54:43And David Coulthard has been extended
00:54:45But Ralf Schumacher still in fourth place
00:54:47Ahead of Micah Hakkanen
00:54:49And Montoya in sixth position
00:54:51Look at that
00:54:53That's a replay, I would guess of Jarno
00:54:55Truly blowing up a few laps before the end of the Grand Prix
00:54:57Michael Schumacher
00:54:59Claire Weiser today
00:55:01Dolde overhead
00:55:03But no problems at all
00:55:05I have to say Martin
00:55:07That Honda have not got it right
00:55:09This year against Mercedes-Benz
00:55:11Against Ferrari, against BMW
00:55:13But more of that later perhaps
00:55:15As the victorious trio
00:55:17Mount the steps to the podium
00:55:19Where shortly we will be seeing them
00:55:21Another race victory for Bridgestone tyres
00:55:23Another second place for them
00:55:25A fine third for
00:55:27Michelin with Giancarlo Fisichella
00:55:29Ferrari of course
00:55:31Are even further ahead in the
00:55:33Constructors Championship
00:55:35Which they've already won than they were before
00:55:37Williams are still
00:55:39Third to McLaren
00:55:41And Sauber are still fourth
00:55:43But only four points now
00:55:45Ahead of B.A.R. and Jordan
00:55:47Those all to play for
00:55:49As far as they are concerned
00:55:51In the three remaining races of the year
00:55:53At the most
00:55:55Charismatic circuit of them all
00:55:57Monza in Italy in two weeks time
00:55:59Then the newest of the lot
00:56:01At Indianapolis two weeks after that
00:56:03And the fabulous Suzuka
00:56:05Circuit in Japan
00:56:07In the middle of October
00:56:09But you're looking now
00:56:11At the man we saw very little of
00:56:13In the race because he was so
00:56:15Far ahead
00:56:17Difficult for him to maintain concentration?
00:56:19Well it would appear so
00:56:21We hear from the pits that he did go off the track
00:56:23We didn't see it on our pictures that's for sure
00:56:25But at that point
00:56:27Michael was still pushing like crazy
00:56:29Building his lead more and more
00:56:31And since that incident he's really
00:56:33Backed off and cruised home
00:56:35But ended up just ten seconds
00:56:37Away from David Coulthard
00:56:39Eight wins for Michael this season
00:56:41The most any driver has ever had in one season
00:56:43Is nine
00:56:45And that was Nigel Mansell who's here incidentally
00:56:47In his victorious year
00:56:49For the World Championship in 1992
00:56:51And
00:56:53Michael Schumacher himself
00:56:55When he was with the Benetton team
00:56:57There's three races left
00:56:59And if Michael wins two of them
00:57:01It looks as though there's little to stop him
00:57:03He will add yet another record
00:57:05To his incredible record
00:57:07Michael we saw in that slow-mo replay
00:57:09Still with his rip-off on his visor
00:57:11He didn't follow anything all day did he really
00:57:13Blitz past a few backmarkers but
00:57:15Absolutely clear car
00:57:17And helmet and visor
00:57:19For the winner Schumacher

00:59:31Believe it or not there have been
00:59:33Protests from
00:59:35Politically correct killjoys
00:59:37About Michael Schumacher
00:59:39Conducting the National Anthem
00:59:41In front of the Ferrari
00:59:43Joyous team, so he
00:59:45Responsibly stands with his hands clasped
00:59:47In front of him, but now he can lift
00:59:49The trophy, the 52nd
00:59:51Winner's trophy
00:59:53That Michael Schumacher
00:59:55Has done that with
00:59:57In his quite amazing career
00:59:59Of 158
01:00:01Grand Prix
01:00:03He has won one third
01:00:05Of them, an amazing
01:00:07Record, which is about to make him
01:00:09Not only the most successful
01:00:11Driver in terms of
01:00:13Victories, but very shortly
01:00:15The most successful driver in terms
01:00:17Of championship points
01:00:19He has been one of the architects
01:00:21For Ferrari's return
01:00:23To the top, and he
01:00:25Richly deserves all the
01:00:27Success he has had, but
01:00:29Isn't it nice to see Benetton back there
01:00:31Absolutely, it's great, great for
01:00:33The sport, great for Benetton
01:00:35And Renault, Eddie Jordan won't be too
01:00:37Disappointed either, of course Fisichella is going
01:00:39To Jordan next year, and he's
01:00:41Looking a bit of a star today, no doubt about
01:00:43That, but the champagne is
01:00:45Flowing, and I think that's probably extra
01:00:47Good news too, but the best
01:00:49News of all, subject
01:00:51To official confirmation
01:00:53Is the news that
01:00:55We understand that
01:00:57Luciano Berti
01:00:59Was not badly hurt in that
01:01:01Appalling accident
01:01:03A wonderful day for Schumacher
01:01:05And for Ferrari
01:01:07Thanks very much
01:01:09Indeed, and Murray, thanks to Martin Brundle
01:01:11As well, just to underline what Murray
01:01:13Is saying there, we've officially
01:01:15Been told Luciano Berti is in hospital
01:01:17In Liege, about half an hour from here
01:01:19He has concussion
01:01:21No broken bones though, his condition
01:01:23Described as stable, and I wouldn't think that
01:01:25Champagne would have been sprayed up there
01:01:27By the Spa master, Michael Schumacher
01:01:29If Luciano Berti
01:01:31Hadn't been okay, we're going to hear from the
01:01:33Top three in the press conference, we have the views
01:01:35As well of Tony Jardine
01:01:37And Mark Blundell, we'll be right back
01:01:41Very
01:01:43Pleasingly
01:01:45Spilled champagne, so let's hope
01:01:47There won't be any problems with Luciano Berti
01:01:51Let's quickly ask for the prize
01:01:53Michael Schumacher
01:01:55That was predicted
01:01:57By Thomas Harms from Amsterdam
01:01:59And that's a
01:02:01Nice prediction, and for that he
01:02:03Will be rewarded
01:02:05For a kart session with my neighbour
01:02:07In Huizen, or The Hague
01:02:09How many
01:02:11Of those trophies will he still be able to lift?
01:02:13In Formula 1
01:02:15He has already done it 52 times
01:02:21But his hunger is not yet satisfied
01:02:23Michael Schumacher is on his way
01:02:25To become the most successful
01:02:27Formula 1 driver of all time
01:02:41All good
01:02:43Good afternoon here in Spa-Francorchamps
01:02:45We're waiting for the trio
01:02:47That you just saw
01:02:49That will report for the press conference
01:02:51Too bad for Frenzen
01:02:53Who had a good view of a good result
01:02:55But had the bad luck that he didn't make it
01:02:57From the starting line-up
01:02:59He did get a chance
01:03:01And brought him to the 9th place
01:03:03Which is not a bad achievement
01:03:05It's a bit gloomy here
01:03:07So it's still a long way home
01:03:09The stands are empty
01:03:11Jos Verstappen is at the finish line
01:03:13But he's looking forward to
01:03:152002
01:03:17When he'll be able to race with a Cosworth
01:03:19And that one has
01:03:2160 HP more than the one he's driving now
01:03:25Jos went very fast on the straights
01:03:27But that has to do with the fact that
01:03:29He has no choice
01:03:31He has to drive with less downforce
01:03:33If he gets more HP, he'll be able to drive with more downforce
01:03:35And he'll be able to corner a bit faster
01:03:37And he'll be able to come forward
01:03:41They'll enjoy it
01:03:43All the people who took the trouble
01:03:45To come to the Ardennes
01:03:47To watch the Belgian Grand Prix
01:03:49Who recognized Mike Sumachert as the winner
01:03:51For the 5th time in the history of this Grand Prix
01:03:53With that he came
01:03:55At the same level as Ed Olsena
01:03:57Actually he won him 6 times
01:03:59But he lost the ZG94
01:04:01When he was disqualified
01:04:03By a slightly
01:04:05Torn off chassis
01:04:07That's not allowed
01:04:09But at the moment
01:04:11There's only one man
01:04:13Who's ruling over the Formula 1
01:04:15And that's
01:04:17Mr. Michael Sumachert
01:04:19It's no different
01:04:21He once drove for Flavio Briatore
01:04:23When Briatore was still the team boss at Benetton
01:04:25And he was already delivering two world titles
01:04:27And now he has two at Ferrari
01:04:31And he has won 52 Grand Prix
01:04:33In his career
01:04:35Michael Sumachert
01:04:37A very respectable number
01:05:07Yes, certainly
01:05:09It's unfortunate for my brother, obviously
01:05:11When you say I made an amazing start
01:05:13I don't think that's true
01:05:15I think the guy next to me made an amazing start
01:05:17I don't know which position he came from
01:05:19But he almost took me
01:05:21So on that side
01:05:23We made average starts
01:05:25And I was able to just defend my position
01:05:27Thanks to whatever problem Williams had
01:05:29I didn't have to fight against them
01:05:31Because you saw the first start
01:05:33They just pulled away and I had no chance
01:05:35I thought if
01:05:37Rather from the second position
01:05:39He would have just beat me into the first corner
01:05:41We didn't need to find out
01:05:43And I had a clear race from that moment on
01:05:45And obviously delighted
01:05:47Now
01:05:49Thousands and thousands of fans across the border
01:05:51From Köppen, your hometown
01:05:53And from Germany
01:05:55They kept you company during the race
01:05:57But as you said, it really was
01:05:59You were out on your own
01:06:01How easy was it to keep your concentration and control
01:06:03I stayed flat out until
01:06:05The second pit stop
01:06:07Then I eased off
01:06:09For whatever reason
01:06:11I had the chance to open up the gap
01:06:13For an extra pit stop
01:06:15And we didn't know what the weather would do
01:06:17So I just wanted to have that safety
01:06:19Because obviously
01:06:21I was faster than Giancarlo
01:06:23And David couldn't get by
01:06:25I was able to open up such a lead
01:06:29I lost once the concentration
01:06:31I was just
01:06:33Playing with too many buttons at the same time
01:06:35And then running wide
01:06:37And almost
01:06:39Going into the barrier
01:06:41Didn't need much to do that
01:06:43But when you fight on the limit
01:06:45When you drive
01:06:47Then that's what can happen
01:06:49Thank you very much Michael
01:06:51David, second place
01:06:53Before you came here to Spark
01:06:55Would you have ever predicted you'd have spent so much of the race
01:06:57Looking at the rear wing of a Benetton
01:06:59No, no, no
01:07:01Giancarlo was doing an amazing race
01:07:03Obviously his car was working better than it has done this season
01:07:05And he was quick
01:07:07In all the right areas
01:07:09So out of La Source
01:07:11And out of Stavolo
01:07:13So it was very difficult to get close
01:07:15And I knew that my opportunity might come at the pit stop
01:07:17And I thought I lost it when I caught one of the Menardis
01:07:19In Blanchimont
01:07:21And I said to the team as I came down the radio
01:07:23I think it's going to be close
01:07:25Obviously he came out in front of me
01:07:27And the back marker at La Source
01:07:29It just upset his rhythm a little bit
01:07:31And I got the run through
01:07:33Eau Rouge
01:07:35And thankfully was able to outbrake him
01:07:37So given the weekend I've had
01:07:39I'm obviously very happy to get second place
01:07:41And just hoping obviously
01:07:43That Luciano is 100%
01:07:45And able to do the next race
01:07:47And then we can all feel it's been a positive weekend
01:07:49David, looking at your car
01:07:51During the pit stops
01:07:53It was absolutely covered with oil
01:07:55Was that from you or from someone ahead of you?
01:07:57I was saying to Giancarlo
01:07:59That I've never been behind such a messy car
01:08:01I was having to wipe my visor
01:08:03Every single straight
01:08:05And I was out of rip-offs very quickly
01:08:07And I understand that
01:08:09It just made it across the line
01:08:11So I think it was spitting all it's oil out
01:08:13So it's obviously a lot quicker
01:08:15But a little bit close to the limit probably
01:08:17Thank you very much David
01:08:19Giancarlo
01:08:21First time you've been in one of these conferences
01:08:23Last year
01:08:25Can you put your finger on what has happened to your car
01:08:27To make it so much faster?
01:08:29Obviously there was
01:08:31The new aerodynamics package here
01:08:33And the car was much more competitive
01:08:35Easier to drive
01:08:37Easier to make a good setup
01:08:39Even much more grip than normal
01:08:41During the race there was a very good balance
01:08:43Especially after a few laps
01:08:45Because at the beginning
01:08:47There was a lot understeering
01:08:49But then there was a good balance
01:08:51We just missed a few k's
01:08:53In the straight compared to other people
01:08:55But maybe in Monza
01:08:57There is one more step on power
01:08:59And we are very optimistic
01:09:01For the next one
01:09:03Now you had a very unusual tyre tactic
01:09:05At your second stop
01:09:07You only changed the tyres at one end of the car
01:09:09Can you explain why and was it your choice?
01:09:11Yeah it was my choice
01:09:13There was a problem
01:09:15Starting with the new tyres
01:09:17There was a graining
01:09:19So I decided
01:09:21To keep the same tyres
01:09:23In fact I did the race
01:09:25At the end of the race
01:09:27With the same set of tyres
01:09:29Just on the front
01:09:31But new on the rear
01:09:33It was the right choice
01:09:35We did a very good job
01:09:37I did two amazing starts
01:09:39Especially the second one
01:09:41From the 6th position I went to second
01:09:43And I'm happy
01:09:45It's a great day
01:09:48Thank you very much Giancarlo
01:09:50Michael back to you
01:09:52Next race Italian Grand Prix
01:09:54You've already got the championship
01:09:56It's going to be quite a party at Monza
01:09:58Yeah you can imagine
01:10:00On the other side we still want to do well
01:10:02Which is going to be maybe a little bit more difficult for us
01:10:04Looking at the characteristics of the circuits
01:10:06From Hockenheim
01:10:08We know Williams is very competitive there
01:10:10So we have to work very hard
01:10:12And we have to find out
01:10:14What we can actually do against this
01:10:17Package of what they have
01:10:19But we certainly will try
01:10:21As we have tried here
01:10:23But anyway we have good reasons
01:10:25To celebrate down there
01:10:27Indeed you do, Michael thank you
