00:00:00Silverstone it's mid-july the right place and the right time for the British Grand Prix James Allen and Louise Goodman
00:00:07Will give you all the news from the pits in the commentary box. It's Martin Brundle and
00:00:12F1's top talker Murray Walker and
00:00:15Are you ready?
00:00:17Because this is the big one. I mean that very sincerely round 11 of the 2001
00:00:25Formula one world championship at Silverstone in currently glorious weather
00:00:31This is the race that could decide this year's world championship
00:00:36If David Coulthard who is currently 31 points behind Michael Schumacher
00:00:43The reigning world champion does not finish in front of the Ferrari here at Silverstone
00:00:48he really is going to have a major job on his hands to be world champion this year, but
00:00:55All is not lost. David Coulthard has won here twice already last year and the year before
00:01:01And although McLaren have not exactly been away
00:01:04They are really back with a bang now
00:01:08Mika Hakkinen the man who has disappointed so many of us so often this year not so much through his problems as the cars is
00:01:16eight to one thousandths of a second slower than Michael Schumacher on the front row of the grid in second place and David
00:01:24Coulthard that double winner here is right behind Michael Schumacher's Ferrari
00:01:29But that is the man to watch
00:01:32Jarno's Trulli in a
00:01:35Rejuvenated Jordan Honda the man who has deserved to win Grand Prix after Grand Prix
00:01:40But has never actually made it onto the podium could very much be there this year
00:01:46The very likable little Italian is getting better and better. He's fourth on the grid
00:01:51He's less than half a second slower than Michael Schumacher and his teammate Heinz-Harald Frentzen is in fifth position
00:01:59What about the Williams? I hear you asking and that powerful BMW engine and the Michelin tires are not going so well here
00:02:07Montoya who I have been tipping for a win today is eighth on the grid and his teammate Ralph Schumacher is
00:02:14In 10th position just behind him
00:02:17But it's as ever all going to depend on strategy on tires who comes in when and
00:02:25Above all whether it rains you see above you blue skies and white clouds
00:02:30But it was just as quick to go from this to rain in the past at Silverstone and it could go the other way today
00:02:38What do you think some of the teams are talking about the chance of light rain during the course of the Grand Prix?
00:02:43Michael Schumacher then on pole position
00:02:45I believe the
00:02:47McLaren's have a slightly better launch control the start mechanism
00:02:51they use where the drivers let the electronics take over for them and
00:02:55Control their launch towards that first corner cops an unusually fast first turn here at Silverstone Murray
00:03:01They're doing quite a speed when they get down there well over 150 miles an hour
00:03:05But at the end of the day, there's only really just enough room for one car on the racing line still
00:03:10So Michael Schumacher then under attack from the McLaren's can Hacken and come into play today
00:03:16Can there be some team riding as they would be in speedway?
00:03:21parlance such that Hacken and can help David Coulthard in the World Championship and we want to
00:03:28Damon Hill looks more and more like George Harrison every day
00:03:33It does indeed doesn't it's got nothing to do with the race. But here we go. There we are
00:03:38Those are the lights which are going to indicate that it's soon time for the
00:03:44Formation lap to start and we've seen some pretty dramatic happenings on the formation left in
00:03:501994 for instance Michael Schumacher is currently in pole position was second on the grid to Damon Hill
00:03:56He passed Damon on the formation lap. They had another one
00:03:59He did it again and they said that's enough black flag during the race
00:04:03This was and Michael Schumacher stayed out. He was in the Benetton. He came in
00:04:08He took a penalty a very very exciting situation Coulthard deciding today to speak to absolutely nobody on the grid
00:04:15He's not as we saw when we would cut live to him
00:04:17he's not really had that much of a chance to have a full preparation leading into this a
00:04:23Crucial Grand Prix for his championship chances and and the future
00:04:28So Coulthard then really needing to focus deeply he could well do without two cars in front of him this afternoon
00:04:35But boy does his car look good this morning marrying the warm-up super track temperature 28 degrees the formation lap starts
00:04:42Martin we've taken you've taken us round already, but do it again. It's a
00:04:46It's a fantastic experience a nice high shot then for us to
00:04:52Appreciate the high-speed nature of this Silverstone circuit and that is Beckett's corner looks very smooth and easy
00:04:59Doesn't it from this range?
00:05:01But certainly it's this corner just talking to get hot burger on the line from BMW representing the Williams team
00:05:07Of course associated with Williams saying we can't get through there
00:05:10It's high speed and there's a direction change in a second direction change
00:05:15through that area and they're losing three quarters of a second before they arrive on their way down to Stowe and
00:05:21Something then around 150 160 miles an hour. They'll be doing at race speed and there's quite a little crest there into value
00:05:27Can't see the corner you have to break just over the top of it and
00:05:30Club where you're always scrabbling around to try to get each and every one of your 800 horsepower
00:05:37Transmitted of course just through the rear wheels down into the Silverstone tarmac and gently uphill to Abbey chicane
00:05:44then about 70 miles an hour on the way through here and
00:05:48Schumacher bunching the pack up then he does not want to get on the line and wait 40 45 seconds before they finally
00:05:56Finish lining up in places 21 and 22 a
00:06:00Sprint they're trying to get some temperature into those rear tires and he'll jump on the brake pedal
00:06:04You sometimes see him actually locking his front wheels on this lap trying to generate some brake temperature
00:06:09Keep the front tire temperatures and pressures where they need to be
00:06:13He knows he's got to have a car that is working from meter one of lap one
00:06:18Because those McLarens are gunning for him this afternoon Luffield a long long right-hand corner
00:06:23Formula one cars a bit fidgety through there and you have to wait an eternity before you
00:06:28Catapult out of there and to stand and watch a formula one car
00:06:31There is absolutely amazing the true
00:06:33Force and energy involved from the acceleration the power-to-weight ratio
00:06:37Really shows up there Murray and they're forming up then heading towards the grid and remember the problems
00:06:44that McLaren have had with their launch control in recently races where both David Coulthard and
00:06:50Mika Hakkinen have been left on the line
00:06:53They'll have been working very hard on that
00:06:55But watch also those yellow Jordans in pole position Michael Schumacher
00:07:01Behind him David Coulthard alongside him on your left is Mika Hakkinen behind
00:07:06Michael Schumacher Coulthard behind Hakkinen is Jarno Trulli. You can see Coulthard's intentions already look Murray
00:07:13He's got his car pointed in between Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher
00:07:17He's hoping he can get some grip straight away and catapult between the pair of them bit ambitious there for Coulthard and the tail enders
00:07:24Are lining up now is Michael Schumacher gonna make a good start and cut across the front of Mika Hakkinen
00:07:30And he's famous for that three lights four lights five laps
00:07:34pause
00:07:36Go go go and Schumacher gets away. Well Trulli is up alongside and sprinting into the first corner
00:07:43It's Schumacher leading and Jarno Trulli is still fourth and off goes the pair
00:07:48And Trulli hit Coulthard, Trulli hit Coulthard into the first corner
00:07:52Did he go off? I can see a Jordan in the gravel track and that was a McLaren coming out of the pit lane
00:07:57It must have been Coulthard. So look Michael Schumacher then from Mika Hakkinen and where did Coulthard go?
00:08:02Did he fully connect with the Jordan? I think he did
00:08:05Well, it's a Williams up in third place and out goes Jarno Trulli from the look of it
00:08:10And you can see there's and they're jostling for position at Stowe corner
00:08:14But it's a Williams up into third position and it looks like Juan Pablo Montoya
00:08:19It is ahead of Perry Callow in the Ferrari who is fourth and Ralf Schumacher is fifth and out goes the BAR
00:08:26Panis, Panis is out then so Trulli and Panis out and I think Coulthard had a spin
00:08:32I saw them just touch before they went out of camera shot and Coulthard and Trulli getting together in turn one
00:08:39What a shame for this race. What a shame for Coulthard's World Championship chances
00:08:43Indeed it is but Mika's on the boil. Look at him right behind Michael Schumacher and Montoya in that very powerful Williams BMW in third position
00:08:52He's doing much better than he could have expected to. He's gained five places already
00:08:57And we're still on the first lap coming towards the end of it. Schumacher leads, Hakkinen second
00:09:02Montoya going very wide in third place. Barry Callow, Ralf Schumacher and Raikkonen is sixth
00:09:08And Coulthard we believe is coming in the pits this time around so the contact must have been pretty heavy
00:09:14Maybe he's got some suspension damage and he goes past me now. Coulthard not pitting but he is last but one
00:09:20Coulthard goes over the line in 18th because of we've lost cars already in this Grand Prix
00:09:25So David Coulthard then still on track clearly four wheels all pointing in the right direction
00:09:30David Coulthard has got to pray now that something happens to take Michael Schumacher out of the race
00:09:35If his world championship chances have not been destroyed already. Micah Hakkinen sitting in the wheel tracks of the Scarlet Ferrari
00:09:42Now, what is the gap between Montoya and Hakkinen?
00:09:46The answer is 2.1 seconds at the end of the first lap. Be interesting to see whether he's closing up
00:09:52Remember that the Ferrari and the McLaren are both on Bridgestone tyres
00:09:57Montoya is on Michelin's, Micah Hakkinen having a look and the first three are breaking away from Rubens Barrichello who is fourth
00:10:04We've got a two-horse race I think here because Montoya I do not believe he's got the car or the tyres underneath him
00:10:10So these two are going to scamper off into the distance. We'll watch Coulthard with interest
00:10:14We're hearing from the F1 ITV pit crew. Coulthard decided to stay out
00:10:18The team are ready for him if he chooses to come in. They wonder if he's got some damage
00:10:23We didn't see exactly how he went off, where he went off but he emerged out of the pit lane
00:10:28So I imagine he had a big spin towards the inside of Cobb
00:10:31Yeah, and you know the most interesting thing I've heard this afternoon Martin was when John Topp was talking to you on the grid
00:10:37And he implied that Michael Schumacher did not necessarily have to win
00:10:42That he might therefore be satisfied with something less than first place
00:10:45Provided it got him points and provided it got him more points than David Coulthard
00:10:50It's certainly doing that at the present moment. David Coulthard in 18th position in Wrigley
00:10:54And here we go. We've missed the action up the front. That is Pannis getting together what looked like with Villeneuve
00:10:59I just caught the beginning of that but uh, and Coulthard is indeed coming out of the pit lane
00:11:04Looks he must have spun to the inside. Let's see if we can see it this time around again
00:11:08That's Pannis's little trip across the gravel. He will eventually get beached in the same gravel trap already as truly now
00:11:16Let's have a look
00:11:17Coulthard going around the outside of the Jordan, the Jordan under steering, Coulthard nipping him slightly
00:11:22And yes, Coulthard spins look a long graceful but critical spin to the inside of the racetrack out of harm's way
00:11:29Has it damaged Coulthard's rear suspension? It's clearly damaged Trulli's front suspension
00:11:34Yeah, Wally spun, passing with Barrichello, Schumacher, Räikkönen, Heidfeld, Frentzener, Lacey, Villeneuve, Verstappen, De La Rosa, Button, Bernaldi, Irvine and Berti
00:11:43And David Coulthard is in the 18th position fighting his way through the field as Micka Häkkinen fights Michael Schumacher
00:11:50Who will I am sure know that David Coulthard his chief world championship rival is out of the race
00:11:57The Ferrari radio signals will have told him and there's somebody else off
00:12:02Coulthard we think let's look it. It's David Coulthard. David Coulthard's race is over
00:12:08David Coulthard retires from the British Grand Prix on lap four and sadly I have to say it looks as though his world
00:12:15Championship chances have gone with it not impossible, but even more difficult
00:12:20That's going to be a right rear suspension failure then on Coulthard's car without doubt
00:12:25And he was struggling around in the back. We heard he was definitely coming in that lap
00:12:29Anyway, I'd be surprised if they could do anything about that
00:12:32Damage because it's quite significant to change a rear wishbone, but Coulthard then out of the race and we're on lap four
00:12:40What bitter goal for David Coulthard, this is race 11
00:12:44He's finished in the points in every race except one this year
00:12:48And that was the Canadian Grand Prix when his engine looked let him down and here we're watching Coulthard now
00:12:53Oh, yes, he's out of shape long before the corner look
00:12:56So what would happen is one of the links on the rear suspension?
00:12:59Would break and it starts turning the car from the rear almost as if your steering wheel is connected to the rear wheels
00:13:05Instead of the front and uh Coulthard then couldn't make it back to the pits
00:13:10And McLaren have yet to have both drivers finish in a race this year
00:13:15With Michael Schumacher now on lap four out of 60 in this British Grand Prix at Silverstone
00:13:21Mika Häkkinen dogging his wheel tracks, but what a gap there is between them
00:13:25It's 3.2 seconds now between Mika Häkkinen who is in second place and Juan Pablo Montoya as Häkkinen goes for it
00:13:34Häkkinen takes the lead on lap five brilliant bit of driving
00:13:38I think Michael made a mistake Michael got wide out of cops and I don't think he really wanted to fight too hard either
00:13:44Remember what Jean-Claude said to us on the start line and Häkkinen possibly moving away at a vast rate of knots
00:13:51Let's try and understand what Schumacher did there
00:13:53It looked as if he either just got a little wide on the exit of cops
00:13:58Or just decided to yield and get Häkkinen out of his mirrors and concentrate on maximizing the six points this afternoon
00:14:05Michael Schumacher will already know rest assured that David Coulthard is out of this race
00:14:11Yeah, Michael very much the thinking man's Formula One Grand Prix driver. He sized up the situation
00:14:17He knows he doesn't have to win
00:14:19He can get a minimum of six points more from David Coulthard if he stays where he is
00:14:23But I wouldn't have expected him to drop that far behind so quickly Murray to be perfectly honest
00:14:28In the back of my mind all the time i'm saying to myself
00:14:30Has he got a problem what matters as we watch this replay of Mika Häkkinen diving past the Ferrari
00:14:38Which as Martin says Michael Schumacher does not fight at all to stop him going through the important thing
00:14:43Now is to watch Montoya who was 3.8 seconds behind on the previous lap and see whether he starts catching Schumacher
00:14:50In which case we will know that he has got a problem
00:14:53So Michael did get a touch wide in cops, but not so much
00:14:57He's now 1.9 seconds adrift last time around here. They were absolutely side by side
00:15:01Of course Michael already beginning to fall back towards Montoya
00:15:06So what is going on inside the cockpit of that Ferrari?
00:15:10But the crowd were on their feet as Mika Häkkinen came around to lead the Grand Prix
00:15:15Murray, that's unusual considering the sea of red caps outside our window. Yeah, we want to see Mika Häkkinen back third place
00:15:21He's only had one podium this year in Canada and a couple of six places to give him those
00:15:27Nine world championship points that he's got but what's going on behind?
00:15:30Well Rubens Barrichello in the scarlet Ferrari and there he is is in fourth place coming down to stowe corner being pursued
00:15:38by
00:15:39the BAR there that's Jacques Villeneuve who's in 10th position chasing Jean Alessi
00:15:46and
00:15:47Behind Villeneuve in the BAR. It's Pedro de la Rosa in the Jaguar ahead of his teammate Eddie Irvine
00:15:53Who is in 15th place?
00:15:55We're on lap six out of 60 one tenth distance Olivier Panis and Jarno Trulli both out of the race as is sadly
00:16:03David Kulfang. So here is Alessi Villeneuve turning into the left hander at Abbey
00:16:09Now right up towards bridge the most spectacular corner on the course
00:16:14They take that at 160 miles an hour into the comparatively slow complex at Priory and Brooklands
00:16:2155 miles on the apex there then round the double right hander at Luffield accelerate away round at Woodcote and
00:16:29and Jean Alessi in the
00:16:32Crossed leads across the line the BAR. There's only one BAR left in the race
00:16:37Of course only one McLaren left in the race and only one Jordan left in the race
00:16:42And Heinz Harald Frentzen who started fifth is down to eighth position
00:16:47And Luciano Berti then is out of the race. He's going past our window here
00:16:52There he is now you see it in the prost and look at that line of oil behind him
00:16:58He is off the racing line
00:17:00That's a difficult car to recover from there Murray a very difficult car
00:17:04Especially as if he hasn't got it into neutral there is a couple of gates along the pit wall and
00:17:10They can get that car through they'll have to operate under wave yellows. Jano truly then his race lasted just one corner
00:17:17He is back in the pits already and last time around Hakanen's lead was already up to 3.6
00:17:24Seconds and on this particular lap, he's another one and a half seconds already faster than second place man
00:17:30Michael Schumacher you're watching Fisichella who's running 18th and last at the moment and that is
00:17:37Why he's running 18th and last he's just recovering from the gravel trap. That's a replay
00:17:42uh from
00:17:44Cox and Jensen Button is in an excellent for the Benetton this year 13th place replay of Fisichella going off
00:17:51Jensen Button is actually doing well in this race. He's tucked up behind Pedro de la Rosa's Jaguar
00:17:56He's ahead of Bernoldi's arrows he's in 13th place and he's ahead of Eddie Irvine in the Jaguar a few people having some dramas on
00:18:05Bertie's oil coming around here getting well out of shape the
00:18:09Red and yellow striped flags are waving a plenty to warn the drivers
00:18:14Because actually it is at the beginning of the racing line of woodcut and then now now they've got that knowledge
00:18:19They'll start to move outboard of that. It will be no longer a problem next time around
00:18:25Well, i've said watch montoya montoya is definitely catch the there's the red and yellow oil flag telling the drivers to watch out because
00:18:32there is oil from bertie's
00:18:34Engine and montoya has closed the gap between himself and michael schumacher who's in second position
00:18:41To under three seconds on 2.7 seconds and what's important is that he is gaining
00:18:46I suspect that schumacher has got some sort of a problem as
00:18:51Luciano bertie walks in at the end of the race four retirements now punished truly kufad and
00:18:57Bertie as we look down at the sole mclaren of mika hackinan
00:19:02Remember mika has had appalling luck this year
00:19:07in
00:19:07Spain he was coming home in the last lap to win the race when his clutch exploded and out he went
00:19:14I think michael's got a problem. Murray. He's now lapping
00:19:17Two and a bit seconds a lap slower than mika hackinan. I don't think he'd be wanting to let himself anywhere near
00:19:24Montoya, he knows full well montoya will have a stab at him at the first opportunity with a big overtaking move
00:19:30So michael then way way off the pace of this morning's warm-up some three seconds per lap
00:19:36However much fuel he's got on board. He should not be going that slowly
00:19:40No, and he's less than two seconds behind montoya louise louise louise goodman
00:19:44I'm standing here with a very disappointed day because our david re suspension. It looked like to us. Was that right?
00:19:50Yeah, and I obviously got damaged with the contact with yarn over the first corner
00:19:53I was on the radio explaining that I had a big problem and the team said let's let's look at the data and so
00:19:57uh, but I knew it was it was only a matter of time really and
00:20:01Obviously let go coming through bridge and caught me out going into the priory corner
00:20:05Tell us about that first corner incident. What exactly happened?
00:20:08Well, i'm sure it's a classic case of two drivers two different opinions
00:20:11but yana made a better start he was on my inside, but the nature of cops is a very open corner and I felt that
00:20:17Given that I was ahead
00:20:18I could still maintain my position on the exit and be in the right line for beckett's and when I tried to turn for the
00:20:23corner
00:20:24Uh, he's maintained the position and hit my my rear corner as i've turned in so
00:20:29I'm sure he'll see a different way. He'll say that I probably turned in on him, but
00:20:33He's not in the championship battle, you know
00:20:35Yeah, I know he's got to work hard for his position
00:20:37But you've got to give up at some point because two into one doesn't go I had the lead
00:20:41So I believe he should have been the one who backed off
00:20:43Where do we stand with the championship now? I mean that was your worst case scenario, wasn't it?
00:20:47Yeah, no, but um mika's leading which is is good
00:20:50Michael, you never know could have reliability problems and we could be all squared again after the first bad luck
00:20:55Yes, that's true
00:20:56But what a battle we're looking at now rubens barrichello in the ferrari in fourth position
00:21:02Has got ralph schumacher's williams tucked up behind him. He's followed by reichen and he's followed by heidfeldt
00:21:08He's hollowed by followed by heights harold fredson
00:21:11So there is the ferrari and for whatever reason rubens barrichello in the ferrari is disappointing again
00:21:17He's not had a great weekend has he but sir
00:21:19Frank williams are going to be very excited about how his cars are going to be a pleasant surprise from him and here's the start
00:21:24So look truly getting away very well barrichello. You're still having a bad start and what happens into the first corner?
00:21:31Michael look front left gets away
00:21:33Well hacken and tucks in behind side by side truly and kuldad appeared to be enough room
00:21:38They both went for it bit of a racing incident
00:21:40I think i'd have to call that one be difficult to really apportion blame. There's another angle kuldad was definitely ahead
00:21:47Truly with nowhere to go didn't want to yield
00:21:51You can't blame him really so I think uh, david could have left him a bit more space
00:21:55Jarno could have been a little bit more careful difficult to really say any more than 50 50
00:22:00Trouble is if you give way you're a wimp and if you don't give way you're too hard
00:22:04Yeah, but you've got to make sure you keep keep your wheels intact
00:22:08And there is the lead gap you're seeing for yourself in real terms and mika hacking an 11.6
00:22:15Seconds ahead last time over the start finish line
00:22:18So, uh, michael schumacher on an absolute sunday afternoon cruise here for whatever reason would love to know
00:22:24Why mika hacken and 18 times a winner and michael schumacher 50 times a winner looking good for his?
00:22:3251st grand prix win already
00:22:35And that would make him equal with alan cross
00:22:37And if he goes to germany and does the same there in two weeks time in front of his adoring countrymen
00:22:43He will undoubtedly be the world champion of 2001
00:22:46Ross braun watching as ever that is ralph schumacher
00:22:49Who's in fifth position with kimi raikkonen in the sauber behind him and then behind kimi raikkonen that is nick heidfeldt
00:22:57And heights harold frentzen in the yellow jordan has slipped from fifth to eighth
00:23:02Four ferrari engine cars in the top seven then murray with the two saubers, of course using last year's ferrari engine
00:23:09Not too shabby, is it?
00:23:10Of course it won the world championship for michael schumacher and is certainly doing a great job in the back of that sauber this year
00:23:16Yeah, constructors champions in 2000, uh in 1999 constructors champions in 2000
00:23:23Ferrari are now working. They've said this themselves
00:23:26They're working to dominate formula one with michael schumacher
00:23:30Probably not with rubens barrichello who we expect probably to be replaced
00:23:46So
00:24:16So
00:24:46Foreign
00:25:16Foreign
00:25:46Foreign
00:25:54Out of 60 at silverstone and already it looks safe to say that the
00:26:00Incredible michael schumacher very much the dominant driver of his time
00:26:04Is strolling away to another grand prix victory unless something happens in the fuel stop unless something happens to the car
00:26:12He's 17 seconds behind
00:26:15Yeah, he's strolling away
00:26:17But not from anybody murray montoya is keeping within a second of him hackanan is 17 seconds out front
00:26:24And louise goodman is in the pits with jano truly. I am indeed martin jano. We've heard david's side of the story. What's yours?
00:26:31Well, I had a very good start and by the first corner was next to david
00:26:35I don't know if probably he hasn't seen me or he didn't want to give up so he just
00:26:39Took the outside line closed the door and that stage didn't have any more space to avoid the accident
00:26:45It's a shame because uh, you know the team this weekend has done a great job. We had a very good car
00:26:50Our expectations were very high for the race martin described it as a racing incident. Would you see it that way?
00:26:56Yes, because probably we didn't understand each other
00:26:59I was on inside line and normally if i'm inside next to someone I don't give up and probably david was fighting for the championship
00:27:06Really wanted to keep the east position
00:27:08And he closed the door a bit too much. And so in this case, you know, we didn't found
00:27:13our way
00:27:14Thanks, jano
00:27:15And here we go. Germany's michael schumacher second place ahead of colombia's juan pablo montoya in the williams bmw
00:27:25And it is getting very frisky indeed in this battle for second place
00:27:31Montoya has closed up to less than a second behind michael schumacher
00:27:35But what is going on in michael's head?
00:27:38What is going on with the ferrari because i'm quite sure that this is not a situation that he wants
00:27:43I don't think michael's happy on this first set of tires marie something like that
00:27:48He hasn't had any contact with anybody. He almost yielded to
00:27:53Mika hakkinen easily. He didn't really fight him at all. He didn't make a big mistake just and villeneuve has
00:28:00Finally overtaken jean. Alessi
00:28:02You're watching now and we're going to see a replay of that a good slipstream down into stowe
00:28:06And a slide and slither up the inside alessi realizing early on he's beaten
00:28:11And villeneuve very much with the faster car there
00:28:14But I think villeneuve got together with his teammate in the first corner of the first lap
00:28:18Alessi springing up from what was 14th on the grid to what is now p11 behind villeneuve in 10th place
00:28:26But michael schumacher, I do not believe is happy with his ferrari be interesting to see after his first pit stop
00:28:33Where he's at if they're just playing a cruisy game
00:28:37And they're totally confident to let this happen because coulthard is out of the world championship
00:28:42Hakkinen is no threat. He just has nine world championship points at this time
00:28:46But michael is playing it very cool if he's prepared to allow montoya to be that close. James
00:28:52Allen is in the pits. Yeah down at ferrari actually naturally coming down to see if there's any kind of problem here
00:28:56They say michael's car is absolutely fine. There's nothing wrong with it
00:28:59I think for once guys what we're seeing here is ferrari actually being conservative with the race strategy
00:29:04I think he's carrying more fuel than mika hakkinen
00:29:06I had a whisper before the race start of the race
00:29:09That ferrari believed that one of the mclarens would be running quite light and that's clearly what mika hakkinen is doing
00:29:14Having said that the pace is not all that hot martin after the warm-up this morning
00:29:18We expected to see them going a lot faster than this. So it's a cat and mouse game
00:29:21It's one that will evolve over the next 20 or so laps, but I think ferrari just playing conservative
00:29:26They came here hoping to win but it wasn't necessary for them. It was absolutely necessary for mclaren
00:29:32Yes, because hakkinen on lap 16 is already over 20 seconds ahead anytime soon two more laps james
00:29:38And he will have a complete pit stop in his pocket
00:29:42Over the rest of the field so michael schumacher working quite hard in the but it doesn't look sorted at all
00:29:48I do not believe the car is where he wants it to be. Yeah
00:29:51It's not doing the current all that good actually with kulfard out of the race because at the present moment
00:29:58Ferrari are on nine the constructors world championship points with schumacher in second place and barry keller in fourth place
00:30:05mika hakkinen for mclaren is on 10 of course, which means to say that mclaren have carved the gap from
00:30:1252 points between themselves and ferrari to 51 if things stay as they are
00:30:18It's looking very very good for ferrari in the constructors championship
00:30:22And of course for the drivers championship on lap 16. We're into the second
00:30:28quarter of the british grand prix now 60 lap race hakkinen schumacher montoya and the gap between hakkinen and
00:30:36Montoya is 22 seconds and the gap between schumacher and montoya is virtually nothing
00:30:43So this is the main fight of the race you're watching it right now ralph schumacher fifth kimi raikkonen
00:30:49Sixth nick heidfeld in the sister sauber seventh and frentzen then in eighth
00:30:54He must have had a bad start too in there somewhere
00:30:57So that's the main scrap other than of course michael schumacher just about keeping montoya at bay jensen button
00:31:06Is down in 13th place running along having a scrap with de la rosa in the jaguar
00:31:12How are the teams doing ferrari very well. Thank you because they are second and fourth
00:31:19Well leading is fine having the other car out is not good how william's doing all right, they're in third and fifth positions
00:31:27And then how are salva doing sixth and seventh? Excellent. Thank you. Jordan have only got frentzen in the race
00:31:33He is eighth arrows have got verstappen in ninth place and bernaldi down in 14th position
00:31:40And bar just to go through the look the top 10
00:31:43Jack villeneuve is in the 10th position and his teammate olivier panis is out as montoya pushes pushes
00:31:50Pushes michael schumacher on lap
00:31:54780 now will schumacher let montoya go so easily. Yes
00:31:57I think he has and he will so michael schumacher then just letting them cruise past him this afternoon
00:32:04I don't think he'd want to take any risk with this man montoya montoya shown quite clearly
00:32:09That he will have a go at the first opportunity ross braun looking super cool
00:32:14Cool, but I don't believe that yield those points for the sake of it mario. Yeah, we're standing right behind the main gravestone
00:32:20And they've just risen to a man and cheered montoya past well done
00:32:24They're saying and rightly so I don't think that they think that michael schumacher is taking it as comparatively
00:32:31Easily as we hear in the commentary box think he is but maybe maybe he's got a problem now now let's start watching
00:32:38Ruben rubens barrichello
00:32:40Who is in fourth position and see how his lap times compare with those of michael schumacher?
00:32:46Michael schumacher's last lap was 1 26 1
00:32:492
00:32:50rubens barrichello's
00:32:52126.3
00:32:54One tenth of a second in between the two ferraris with michael schumacher
00:32:58Marginally fastest now down in third position and montoya is now really starting to go for it
00:33:07His previous lap 125.8, but that was one and a half seconds slower than hackenham
00:33:12I didn't mention eddie irvine when I went through the brits earlier on because I couldn't see him where I expected him to be
00:33:17He's down in 15th place is eddie irvine. So make a hackenham then 25 seconds ahead of montoya
00:33:24Michael schumacher now already 2.2 down barrichello a further 11 seconds down the road ralph schumacher
00:33:31Still in close company with barrichello reichen and rounds off the top six
00:33:46This is retirement the unofficial reports from the team are that there was contact between
00:33:54So
00:34:24So
00:34:35He's just
00:34:54So
00:35:24Foreign
00:35:55Is
00:36:13Yes, this is for second place and michael schumacher no doubt about it
00:36:16Just getting out of the throttle gently down the pit straight
00:36:19Montoya still looking like he wants to give him a cuddle as he goes past him edging up closer and closer to him
00:36:25And easily, of course then takes the line into cops and here's another angle of it and without doubt michael
00:36:33Lifting out of the throttle saying i'm happy
00:36:35I just third place will do me for whatever reason the points will do me or i've got a problem
00:36:39And the first stop of the afternoon then and kimmy reichen and in from seventh position
00:36:46Sixth I think it was because uh, he's been passed as he's going down the pit lane to lose that sixth place
00:36:51And a reasonable quite early stop i'm expecting them nearer 22 24 and hacken and car
00:36:57Their team getting ready then james. Can you see them? Yeah as we expected martin
00:37:01They've got the tire covers off and this is what we thought that hacken and has got reasonably light fuel now
00:37:06He needed about 28 seconds to reach it to be able to pit and rejoin in front of michael schumacher
00:37:12He had only just under 26
00:37:14So I don't know whether he's going to do it
00:37:16But uh, I think michael is playing quite a cagey game here this afternoon and bear in mind martin
00:37:21Ferrari had more data about these new bridgestone tires a good stop there by hacken and van the mclaren team have
00:37:27Yes, I agree with you james
00:37:29I think they probably brought micka in slightly early because he was in the thick of the traffic as you saw was beginning to
00:37:34Lose some of that lead and there is montoya then so montoya takes the lead of the british grand prix
00:37:41And it's not the first grand prix he has led remember that incredible passing maneuver
00:37:46He made on michael schumacher in brazil at the senna s now this man has got real talent
00:37:53This is the man who won the formula 3000 championship who went to america as a contracted williams driver
00:38:02To drive for chip ganassi and he not only won the american champ car championship, but he won the indy 500
00:38:09Came back to europe to drive for williams and
00:38:14Displaced bruno junquera in the process and now he is leading again
00:38:20Slightly false situation because as you know mika hacken is right behind him having gone into the pits and come out again
00:38:28There's very little in it on the track
00:38:30There's a lot more than it looks in terms of time because what's the time full stop take 20 seconds here
00:38:36It's longer than that mary and it's a reasonably good and short stop for hacken and montoya
00:38:41We know the two williams cars are on the harder of the michelin tires
00:38:45Have they elected to go for a one stopper this afternoon?
00:38:49Because they really didn't have the pace to go and win this race as they have in the most recent grand prix through this summer
00:38:56They've not really had a tip-top pace through the weekend. Can they try and do it on strategy?
00:39:01I still don't think montoya will be going that much further before he too makes a pit stop
00:39:07I'm sure hacken and was a strategic stop an earlier stop to get him clear of that
00:39:13Traffic he was having to lap well
00:39:15Sorry, michael schumacher still out on the track, of course
00:39:18And I said we would watch barry kellows times in fourth position
00:39:22The ferraris are now third and fourth and barry kellow is lapping about half a second slower than michael schumacher
00:39:29So maybe michael's decided that the rot has now got to be stopped montoya leading hacken and second
00:39:37Michael schumacher on lap 23 out of 60 in third position ahead of rubens barry kellow ralph schumacher in the williams
00:39:44Bmw up into fifth place. So they're looking good williams. They've got montoya in the lead
00:39:49They've got ralph schumacher in fifth position frentzen as a result of the stops is up into sixth position in the sole jordan
00:39:57As josh for stappan exits the pit lane in the arrows as soon as that fuel filler comes out away he goes
00:40:05belts the asia tech engine hard incidentally the rumors say definitely that the arrows team are going to have
00:40:12ford cosworth engines like the jaguars next year and jenson button comes into the pits for his stop from
00:40:2016th and last but one his teammate missy keller is last
00:40:24So that'll be a crumb of comfort for jenson button not much of a one
00:40:28But at least he's ahead of his teammate and he always has to be the first target
00:40:34So hacking and then really of course with more fuel on board
00:40:37We would imagine that montoya at this stage of the grand prix as he has just pitted
00:40:42And the gap is pretty static at six tenths of a second as they went over the line
00:40:46They're both in the low one minute 24s well over a second faster than anybody else
00:40:52This is a great performance this afternoon from montoya. Whatever the level of fuel look
00:40:56He's absolutely on the ragged edge through stoke two or three times
00:41:00I've seen him using uncharted territory through there and hanging on to that williams. He does seem to like that aggressive style
00:41:07Yeah, he's a strong lad and a very aggressive lad and a very menacing lad
00:41:12You look into those very dark brown eyes of his and they're very determined indeed
00:41:17He's only finished in two races this year
00:41:19You're looking at the gap now between montoya and hacken and battling for the lead and michael schumacher there in third position
00:41:27He's 12 and a half seconds ahead of ruben's barrichella
00:41:31Now I was saying that montoya has only finished twice this year
00:41:35But each of those times he was in second place in spain at the end of the nurburgring all the others have been
00:41:42dnfs did not finish
00:41:45Usually because he's had some sort of a problem with the car, but he's settling down extremely well to formula one now
00:41:52But to say that he's a star of the future is very much an understatement
00:41:56But nolde exiting his arrows from the pit lane on lap 25
00:42:02No life for a formula one clutch, is it they get burned out pretty quickly with those
00:42:06Starts out of the pit lane massive energy as you're lighting up the rear tires just before you do so
00:42:12Drag on the clutch and uh
00:42:15They get two or three of those through the afternoon plus the start of course
00:42:18And they're tiny things about the size of a man's fist to transmit that power
00:42:23And this then is rubens barrichella with ralph schumacher in close attendance
00:42:28So fourth and fifth places as frentzen pitters pits from sixth position. Heinz our frentzen
00:42:35Having a calmer afternoon louise is down there. Yeah, this race starts with such high hopes for george
00:42:41Pretty much dashed by the first corner that first pit stop's gone. Okay. I think the most nervous man
00:42:45It's always a tense moment at the pit stop
00:42:47I think the most nervous man down here though was ross kemp. He had a severe case of stage fright
00:42:50But all seems to have gone. Okay for the man seven laps ago
00:42:54Mika hackett and broke the lap record here at silverstone with a searing
00:43:00123.7
00:43:02Nine and that is some half a second faster than
00:43:06Michael schumacher's previous lap record. It's a speed of about
00:43:11138 miles an hour averaging around this 3.2 mile circuit into the pits comes montoya
00:43:19So as we expected then montoya not with a heavy fuel load
00:43:22He pulls into the pits from the lead of the british grand prix. It all seems to be going
00:43:28Well, he's become a lot of thumbs up in the air. My wheel is on firm and secure
00:43:32I'm happy if you send him as soon as the fuel is in and off down the pit lane goes montoya 120 kilometers per hour
00:43:39And it's a long pit lane here at silverstone. Yeah, but take it easy
00:43:43120k 70 miles an hour
00:43:45Release the button at the right time one pablo when you're back on the track out of the pit lane
00:43:51He has done so mika hackett and mika on the side pod mika on the rear wing
00:43:57And he is now back in the lead on lap 26 at silverstone
00:44:02And montoya is back on track in second position ahead of michael schumacher
00:44:08Who is much closer, of course to the williams than he was before?
00:44:12And there is barry. Kello followed in fourth position by ralph schumacher and jack
00:44:19Villeneuve is now up into sixth place, but he's 30 seconds behind ralph schumacher's williams b&w
00:44:26top six and gaps hacken and leads montoya by
00:44:31About five seconds or so
00:44:34Michael schumacher another couple of seconds further down the road
00:44:37Mika hacken and has just broken the lap record again as I talk to you rubens barrichello is 14 seconds behind his teammate
00:44:45Ralph schumacher is right with rubens barrichello and jack villeneuve in sixth position is 30 seconds behind
00:44:53Ralph schumacher more news from james allan. It's all shaking out in a very interesting way. Isn't this murray?
00:44:58It's as I was saying on the grid beforehand
00:45:00It's wonderful when you get a mixture of different strategies and that's what we've got here this afternoon
00:45:05When will the ferraris make their stop as I say they've been quite conservative this afternoon
00:45:09And one of the reasons for that they were able to base it on is because on friday this brand new bridgestone tire
00:45:14No one had run it before and they put rubens barrichello out for the whole of friday on one set of tires
00:45:20To build up the maximum amount of data that they had and that seems to have worked for them very nicely
00:45:25I can tell you that after the stop that montoya made his next stop will be on lap 44
00:45:29So the pivotal thing then is when will hacken and stop about four laps earlier?
00:45:34And when will michael schumacher stop? Thanks for that. Thanks for that
00:45:37James, you're looking at jack villeneuve in sixth position being pursued by the two salva ferrari
00:45:43Engined cars of kimmy reichannan the super fin ahead of his german teammate nick
00:45:51And they are in seventh and eighth places
00:45:53Frankson is down to ninth position as a result of his pit stop
00:45:57Jorna lacey is up into the top 10 for retirements in order of retiring panis. Truly david
00:46:05And luciano berti and with the greatest of respect to the other three
00:46:09The most important of those from the race point of view is of course
00:46:12David kaufman who started this race in second position in the world championship, and he's still there
00:46:18But it's getting more and more and more difficult for him
00:46:22montoya then slipping back down to fifth position before
00:46:27Since that pit stop rather so montoya back to fifth ahead of him though schumacher ralph and barrichello schumacher
00:46:34Michael have yet to stop so it's still looking good for montoya this afternoon and this man villeneuve has not stopped yet
00:46:41That is why he's up into the top six and that is why both saubers are chasing him
00:47:04So
00:47:34So
00:48:04So
00:48:34Foreign
00:49:04Foreign
00:49:08Doesn't time fly when you're enjoying yourself because we're now on lap 30 out of 60 at silverstone
00:49:15Half distance as you watch rubens barrichello pursued by ralph schumacher in fourth position and montoya his teammate
00:49:23Who is fifth after his pit stop? Yeah bad news for montoya here. Really? He didn't need this at all
00:49:28He's clearly on a two-stopper
00:49:31Like hackanan up front, but it's also clear now that ferrari as james predicted are on one stoppers
00:49:38And so is his teammate ralph and he is now tucked up behind ralph and rubens and the back markers
00:49:44Just when he needs a bit of clear air to make that strategy of his work
00:49:48So montoya then a little bit wrong footed by where he rejoined the racetrack after his stop
00:49:55And uh, although ralph schumacher and montoya get on all right in
00:50:01The sort of rather calm and distant way
00:50:04Ralph schumacher is not going to want at all to move over and let his teammate through even if he's told to
00:50:10Well, he'll have to I mean if the team radio, I mean, it's really compromising montoya's position now vis-a-vis
00:50:16Michael schumacher who's obviously way out of this picture at this time because michael hasn't stopped yet and really williams should be releasing
00:50:23Montoya, but ralph as you said is not going to be keen on that
00:50:27He wants to race barrichello anyway, and he wants to keep montoya as behind him try and spoil his afternoon
00:50:34What are the michelin runners doing? Well, they are in fourth position with ralph schumacher
00:50:38They're in fifth position with montoya and the next one is pedro de la rosa who is in 11th place one position ahead of his teammate
00:50:47Eddie irvine 17 cars left in the race out of the 21
00:50:52Who started taso marquez did not qualify and was not allowed to start
00:50:58Even though an appeal was made to the stewards. They said they didn't see any just reason why he should be allowed to take part in
00:51:04The race now there in the mclaren behind the two ferraris of eddie irvine and pedro de la rosa his race leader
00:51:13He's up to the 12th position the two jaguars in front of him. Yeah
00:51:19The green a very very green jaguars are line a stern there in 11th and 12th place just about to be pounced on
00:51:27By the mclaren and one of them decides eddie irvine decides that's not what he fancies
00:51:33So he's gone in for his first and probably only stop of the afternoon hacken and then 13 seconds ahead of michael
00:51:40Schumacher of a race in the pits look that's sean lacey who was just
00:51:44Ahead of eddie irvine on the track. They come in together
00:51:48It's up to the mechanics now to move really fast eddie irvine could
00:51:53Ideally gain a place here if them if the jaguar mechanics could do a really super stop and get him out
00:51:58Has he done so yet? Yes, eddie irvine gets out ahead of john lacy
00:52:03And although others will have passed him when they come in for their pit stops
00:52:08It will mean that eddie irvine has improved his track position against the prost which led him when they came in
00:52:14We're on lap 32 now and mika hackenen as a result of the stop and schumacher being out
00:52:21There is now nearly 12 seconds ahead of the ferrari ferrari in a very strong position because rubens barrichello
00:52:29Who like michael schumacher has yet to come in there? He is
00:52:33Behind jean lacy who has rejoined barrichello in the third position still ahead of course of ralph
00:52:41Schumacher and behind him juan pablo montoya who has not got past his teammate
00:52:48All three of them are now ahead of jean lacy only 10 cars out of the 21 who started
00:52:56Are on the same lap at the present moment mika hackenen has lapped everybody up to pedro de la rosa
00:53:03It's up to heights harold frentzen now who is in ninth position in the?
00:53:08Pedro de la rosa in the jaguar lap 33
00:53:12Retirements then pannis tripping over his teammate villeneuve in the first corner in the gravel trap truly
00:53:17We're coming together with coulthard coulthard managed another four laps before his suspension failed because of the coming together truly ended up
00:53:25In the gravel trap and out of the race immediately and the other retiree
00:53:30Luciano berti who's prost asa
00:53:33Lunched itself right in front of the comedy box here laying a nice trail of oil to try to catch the others out
00:53:38They managed to survive that so just four retirements, but mika hackenen
00:53:43Carelessly up the front this afternoon and this is the main scrap of the race at the moment barrichello third ralph schumacher fourth
00:53:52Montoya fifth having made a stop and he's on a different strategy and has been held up effectively
00:53:58Interesting situation between barrichello and ralph schumacher
00:54:03In the championship as jacques villeneuve comes into the pit lane from eighth position
00:54:09Hikes harold frentzen takes that position interesting position as I was saying between ralph schumacher and barrichello
00:54:16They're only separated by one point in the driver's championship when this race started
00:54:21And at the present moment barrichello on four points is one ahead of ralph schumacher
00:54:28If ralph schumacher could get past him they would be even steven at the end of this race and williams
00:54:34Are obviously fighting to retain their third position in the constructors championship lap 34
00:54:40And there are barrichello
00:54:42and the two williams
00:54:45You wonder what the lookalike was on the back wing of villeneuve's cars not a new sponsor anything like that
00:54:50Obviously, it's just different ways. They choose not to carry the cigarette advertising here at the british grand prix as they do have to now
00:54:58in several other european
00:55:00Grand prix barrichello then still with his mirrors full of contender ralph schumacher
00:55:06And these two of course homing in on kulfar for second in the world championship as well. Yeah
00:55:12Absolutely, because david david kulfard at the present moment is
00:55:16Is on 47 world championship points and ralph schumacher who is third in the championship is on 31
00:55:25And kulfar out of the race
00:55:27So if if schumacher can get ahead of barrichello, it's going to make a big difference to his world championship situation
00:55:33and that is going probably right down to the wire the last race of the
00:55:38Season in japan and suzuka on october the 14th. This is race 11 and the next two
00:55:44Are hockenheim in germany in two weeks time and then the wonderful city of budapest for the hungarian grand prix
00:55:51Two weeks after that you've just seen patrick ed you're looking now at ross brawn the ferrari technical bot
00:55:57And john tote who had that conversation with martin on the grid and here all on his very own
00:56:04Having yet again broken the lap record. Micah hacken has just gone round in one minute 23
00:56:1123.3
00:56:13And the previous lap record was 124.4
00:56:17He's taken a massive 1.1 seconds of michael schumacher's previous record
00:56:23Well, it's just like an extended test day for micah hacken and he's really has no contenders in this race
00:56:28Michael it appears doesn't really want to be bothered with the fight today. He's thinking of the world championship
00:56:35Can you blame him really in many respects? It's a shame for us. I'd like to see more of a head-to-head than that frankly and
00:56:42Really nobody else out there is remotely fast enough to bother hacking it. So
00:56:47Micah really just enjoying himself probably seeing how much faster he can go each time around
00:56:51Yeah, and michael schumacher's got 22 points more in the driver's championship here at silverstone
00:56:58Which is race 11 out of 17 that he had at the equivalent time last year
00:57:04Last year the 10th race of the year, of course was the austria grand prix because the british grand prix was
00:57:10At the end of april as we well know those appalling weather conditions
00:57:14And incidentally the british racing drivers club and octagon have done a superb job here at silverstone this year
00:57:22As far as I know
00:57:24There's certainly no weather problems as far as people coming in and there is a massive crowd in this ideal weather conditions
00:57:32Thoroughly enjoying themselves. We're on lap 36 now hacking and out on his own into the pits comes pedro de la rosa
00:57:39And he was in ninth place just five seconds ahead of verstappen
00:57:43Who will have taken the position and look down a little bit further down the pit lane the williams mechanics are out for this man
00:57:49Ralph schumacher who pits for the one and only time this afternoon from what was fourth place at the time
00:57:56Montoya snuck past him of course as he was in the slower pit lane
00:58:00What's going to be interesting to see is can michael schumacher pit a little bit later on and get back out in front of montoya
00:58:07Because ralph schumacher really is fighting with barrichello this afternoon and the fuel is taking two or three seconds to come out there
00:58:15So that cost ralph quite badly and I think will probably keep him behind barrichello
00:58:20Yeah
00:58:20Now what is also going to be interesting is that montoya has no longer got ralph schumacher between himself and rubens
00:58:29Barrichello and the colombian is an extremely feisty fighter. I'm not suggesting that ralph schumacher isn't
00:58:36But montoya will be having a real go at barrichello now
00:58:39He's with the ferrari and that is heidfeld and frentzen. So that is for position ralph coming out of the pits
00:58:45It's cost him a little bit and I believe that'll mean that reichanen is front is in front of him
00:58:51Then so I think reichanen has cleared ralph schumacher in this and frentzen having a go at the inside
00:58:57Of fellow countryman nick heidfeld and doesn't make it stick
00:59:01now
00:59:02Heidfeld just moves across which is perfectly entitled to do
00:59:05He got a car's length ahead of the jordan and he moved across took his racing line
00:59:11Frentzen is having another go at him
00:59:12He's got a clean line on the inside as they come out of club out to have me and he dives through on the inside
00:59:18That was a lovely move. It was he has he can he make it stick?
00:59:21No, he can't he went in too deep and uh, just as you were turning and looking at me mario
00:59:26I was thinking is he gonna has he got the grip when he gets it?
00:59:29Because that was desperately light and often when you sweep across the track like that
00:59:33You get a momentum going in the car that hurts you when you get there
00:59:37That's exactly what happened to frentzen, but quite clearly he's got a much better car under traction than nick heidfeld
00:59:43Watch out rubens. Watch out rubens barrichello in third position because juan pablo montoya your fellow south american
00:59:52barrichello from
00:59:54Brazil montoya from colombia is right behind you and there he is
01:00:00From 1.1 seconds the gaps has come down to 0.4
01:00:04Seconds and rubens barrichello who's just been back to brazil for a holiday, which he said gave him new
01:00:12new energy he's going to need it now because
01:00:16Montoya is pushing hard the gap between montoya who is fourth
01:00:20And hackinton who is in the lead is 42 seconds hackinton's out on his own
01:00:25He's nearly 20 seconds ahead of michael schumacher now and schumacher is some 24 seconds ahead of barrichello
01:00:31Well, that's a crucial time, isn't it? Because he's ahead of montoya by the same amount as well
01:00:36So I think michael can duck in and out of the pits and come back out in second place
01:00:41So montoya losing out heavily then by as I said where he rejoined the track and that
01:00:47They're good for us, I think that's going to put him in another head-to-head with michael later on
01:00:51I'm, absolutely sure that you
01:00:53Absolutely sure that you are right now down. Oh now here we are with jenson button
01:00:59He's down in 13th position in the benetton with the reno v10 engine
01:01:05Looks like somebody's hit the wrong button on the sony playstation game there because we went dark
01:01:10Maybe we'll throw a bit of rain at him a little bit later on
01:01:13We think ralph schumacher has gone off the race track
01:01:17So, uh, we think ralph schumacher. We're hearing from the truck
01:01:21He looks like rather than gone off looks like he's um stopped actually in that position more than
01:01:27crashed but we'll have to uh, wait and see and uh
01:01:30We think ralph schumacher with a technical problem then and quite clearly out of the car out of the race
01:01:36Well, you know williams can't be happy about their reliability record
01:01:40That's if it is a technical problem, that's the sixth time this season in 11 races
01:01:47But ralph schumacher's retired and montoya has retired eight times frank williams has said
01:01:53We really have got to do something about the reliability when they finish they finish
01:01:57Well montoya's had two second places ralph schumacher's had two wins now. Here we are with jenson button again
01:02:03What's it like martin? He's in bridge corner
01:02:05That's where just to the right there's where ralph schumacher is trying to find the clutch
01:02:09To uh enable the marshals to move his car out of the way. It's tucked up in a little
01:02:14Pit lane entry for support races, but no problems for button at this stage. He is currently running
01:02:2013th as you can see and just three quarters of a second and that's what three quarters of a second looks like
01:02:26That's how far a formula one car travels every three quarters of a second the distance between him and the little dot on the horizon
01:02:33Which is old hand jean lacy heading down then towards maggots and beckett's let's see
01:02:40A big big lift there for jensen. This car really not working for look even having to fight the car hard
01:02:46And hackanan is in the pits. I can see hackanan pitting
01:02:50in out of our
01:02:52Window here looks like a scheduled stop. They're very much ready for him. So, uh lap 39. That would be about right james
01:02:59Yeah, mika hackanan comes in but the ferrari boys are out ready for michael schumacher
01:03:03He's coming down the pit lane now as well
01:03:06Of course, he's not really racing mika hackanan because hackanan has managed to work a big advantage over him
01:03:11But he is racing one pablo montoya. They've both got one more stop to make we're waiting to see what montoya does
01:03:16But at the moment the tires coming off
01:03:19Schumacher's car look great. They've behaved themselves really well and schumacher back out into the race. Where is he?
01:03:25Well, I can tell you that rubens barrichello with montoya tucked up behind him are about to pass michael schumacher there you see it
01:03:33Barrichello goes through montoya goes through schumacher rejoins the race. It's getting very very interesting now
01:03:41And barrichello knows he's under pressure because he's just made his fastest lap of the race
01:03:47Here is the situation. We're at two thirds race distance at silverstone for the british grand prix
01:03:53And mika hackanan with his stop and michael schumacher with his stop are getting very close rubens barrichello and montoya
01:04:00You can see on the track together
01:04:03Then we've got the two saubers the most improved team of the year
01:04:082001 with their ferrari engine
01:04:10So as martin's already pointed out there are four ferrari engine cars in the top six
01:04:17Heinz harold fredson is right behind heidfeldt who is in sixth position, but 33 seconds ahead of josh
01:04:24Verstappen in the arrows who is a jack fielder in a very disappointing ninth. Is he going to stay with bar?
01:04:31Jaguar the top jaguar is in 10th position driven by eddie irvine
01:04:36So really has rick montoya's afternoon then hasn't it because you can see the gap
01:04:41That is barrichello, of course
01:04:42But just behind them a few seconds down the road is michael schumacher
01:04:46And we know montoya is going to have to stop again yet for a bit of a what will be a bit of a splash and dash
01:04:52and not
01:04:53Too far away from the end of the race, but this quite clearly puts michael back in six points position here
01:05:01Yeah, michael schumacher as ever has proved that he is not only a fantastic race driver on the track
01:05:07But that he uses his headpiece to perfection
01:05:12I don't know what percentage of his ability is used actually driving the car at record breaking speeds and race winning speeds
01:05:19And pole position winning speeds, but it clearly left him with an enormous amount of mental capacity
01:05:26To think about the way the race is going what the tactics ought to be
01:05:30Well, this is good. Look, we're going to get a pit stop from a driver's eye view
01:05:33You can see you just choose the color that you want to go into and there's a box full of 22 men all dressed in
01:05:39The same color. It's a good clue for you. Where are you going to stop?
01:05:43You very rarely read that board
01:05:44You're just looking for the lollipop to go up and it's instinctive the movements you're making inside the car
01:05:49You're holding the steering wheel in the straight air position your left foot gently
01:05:53On the brake and you're steering at that lollipop and when it goes up
01:05:56You go you can't see in your mirrors to check if anybody's coming because your mirrors are full of mechanics
01:06:01So, uh here then Montoya desperately struggling to get past
01:06:06Barrichello, they're on a different strategy and it's wrecked Montoya's chances by losing all of these laps where he should be
01:06:14Similar pace and uh, is that Montoya going in the pit lane coming in he see to pause and
01:06:19Decide whether he was going to come in or not suddenly jink to the right
01:06:23So it's Montoya in his 11th Grand Prix against Barrichello in his 140th Grand Prix
01:06:31And this of course is going to do Montoya
01:06:33No good at all. The question is can he get back on track before the two Saubers appear?
01:06:38Kimi Raikkonen in fifth position and Nick Heidfeld in sixth position and the answer is most definitely yes
01:06:44He can because i'm looking back towards Woodcote now and the Saubers are not yet in sight
01:06:50But Montoya then remember this is a very fast corner course. I think Montoya will get away
01:06:55Fast enough, but that was not a good stop considering how little fuel should have been seven or eight seconds
01:07:00So not a great stop there again
01:07:02uh for
01:07:03Montoya, we saw them struggling a bit with the fuel hose earlier on for Schumacher too
01:07:08So losing a little bit of time in the pits today Williams can Montoya. I think he'll definitely stay ahead of Barrichello
01:07:15But for surely he's going to be behind Michael Schumacher a lot of work to do for him then
01:07:18Yeah, he managed to stay out ahead of John Alessi and Bernaldi
01:07:23Who are fighting down in 11th and 10th places
01:07:27As out of the pits goes Heintz, Harrell, Fredsen behind Heidfeld
01:07:32They came in 5th and 6th and I think they're exiting 5th and 6th and Kimi Raikkonen
01:07:38Who was ahead of them, of course as a result of his stop has dropped back a bit and we're on now on lap 43
01:07:4517, 1.7 to go. Barrichello in the pit lane. Rubens Barrichello
01:07:50Forward is a very late stop 43 laps in to this 60 lap race
01:07:55What can they do for him? What kind of service is he going to get this afternoon? All looks slick, doesn't it so far?
01:08:01He's holding a nice steady revs. Up goes the lollipop, drop the clutch
01:08:05Make sure you spin the wheels
01:08:06Otherwise the engine will die
01:08:08No problem at all then for Rubens as he cruises out and heads into the final sector of this Grand Prix
01:08:15and over the line there is the Williams in the background as
01:08:20Michael Schumacher in second position 22 seconds behind
01:08:26Hakkinen exits the veil turns into the left-hander now club corner
01:08:30You know, I think Barrichello will be ahead of Montoya, you know, because Montoya's stop was slow. Barrichello's looking pretty slick and
01:08:38Interesting to see did Montoya get out there in front of Barrichello. We very nip and tuck. Yeah
01:08:44Look look
01:08:45Mighty close you think knowing in my mind. I'm thinking yes, we'll see very soon what happened
01:08:55Now this is Fernando Alonso in the Minardi pulling off the track
01:09:01What's the problem? There's the problem left front wheel off
01:09:05It goes on a little roll about of its own and it's packing a lot of momentum
01:09:09It looks as though it's got quite slowly
01:09:11But those things were a great deal. I once had Didier Peroni's wheel hit me in that situation and I tell you it hurts
01:09:19Yeah, and Marshall bravely
01:09:21Recovering that wheel. I heard they were rebuilding the Reliant Robins again this week
01:09:25I saw in the news, but shame for Alonso. I think he'd recently been in for a pit stop actually
01:09:30So that one didn't just quite hook up probably but no danger to anybody there
01:09:34And this dead is a veal nerve in place eight
01:09:39Closely followed a lot of attention from Eddie Irvine and he's had a bit of a lackluster weekend
01:09:44Mary yeah top ten lap 44 16 to go Silverstone Hackett and lead Schumacher by 22 seconds
01:09:51Barrichello by 48 seconds Montoya is just a couple of seconds behind Barrichello
01:09:57You were right Martin, but he's catching him and in fifth and sixth places
01:10:01Reikkonen and Heidfeld
01:11:04You
01:11:34You
01:12:04You
01:12:25Eddie Irvine in the Jaguar in ninth position chasing Jack veal nerves
01:12:31To be a are the world champion of 1997 another very disappointing race for the French-Canadian and
01:12:39Jack veal nerve is only just staying ahead of a vibe buddy is staying in eighth position
01:12:46In 10th place now making up the top 10. It's just the steppen in the arrows
01:12:51You can see how hard Eddie Irvine is trying and on lap 46 with one for 14 to go
01:12:58Make a hack and then has got a very very secure lead
01:13:02But he's got to finish the race and there's many a Grand Prix in the past
01:13:06Where the leader has failed on the very last lap and that's happened to make a hack and in himself this very year
01:13:14But he's 22 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher
01:13:17And into the pit lane comes Eddie Irvine from that ninth position for his second pit stop
01:13:23Locking up his wheels desperately trying to slow down before that hundred and twenty kilometer per hour
01:13:29Line and it's not a question of the man not seeing you down there. It's all done electronically
01:13:33There's a loop underneath the racetrack there. They'll tell them exactly what speed he was doing Eddie
01:13:38Absolutely on the margin there and a late stop really for him in this Grand Prix ninth place
01:13:44He had a 27 second advantage over the staffers behind him and that is a proper to stop time now
01:13:50You can see bush Tappan coming down the pit straight in the distance. So Eddie Irvine will retain ninth place
01:13:57Can he recatch Villeneuve?
01:13:58Yeah a good stop by the Irvine and Jack Villeneuve has only stopped once and he's got to come in again
01:14:04So it may well be that when Villeneuve has done his stop and rejoin the track
01:14:09Eddie Irvine will be in front of him. We're on that 47. I don't think Villeneuve will stop the game
01:14:14I don't believe Villeneuve's got to stop. So
01:14:17That then quite clearly is leader Hakanen homing in on Irvine to lap him for the second time
01:14:24So the ninth place man getting lapped twice. That's De La Rosa
01:14:28Sorry, so De La Rosa your current 12th place man is about to be lapped for the second time this afternoon
01:14:35Well, what does it mean if Mika Hakanen wins the British Grand Prix?
01:14:40And he's looking very likely to do so at the present moment with 13 laps to go
01:14:46I don't think he ever lost his confidence Mika. He's not that sort of a chap
01:14:50He will have said to himself. I've had very very bad luck in failing to finish six times
01:14:56The dice have been loaded against me things will come good
01:14:59They always do in the end and they seem to be coming good for him
01:15:03So although he never lost his confidence, this will be a considerable boost to him
01:15:09And it's proving that the McLaren is in great shape
01:15:12That's a very important thing for the rest of the season from the point of view of
01:15:17Racing activity on the tracks Ferrari are looking very strong for the Constructors Championship. I've said that before
01:15:24I'll say it again because the Ferrari team is already 52 points ahead of
01:15:31Michael Schumacher if he finishes in second place
01:15:34he's only going to yield four points in the Constructors Championship to Ferrari and that will
01:15:40Reduce the gap to still a massive 48 points
01:15:44But Mika Hakkinen is obviously and rightly going to feel very good indeed
01:15:50But there are still as he crosses the line to go into his 49th lap
01:15:5512 laps to go including the one that he's on Michael Schumacher while he's cruising round
01:16:02He's about half a second slower than Mika Hakkinen on each lap
01:16:06But he's still lapping it virtually the same time as his teammate Rubens Barrichello
01:16:11And therefore maintaining the 25 second gap between himself and Rubens
01:16:18Rubens Barrichello is
01:16:20Lapping marginally quicker than Montoya
01:16:23so the gap between third and fourth is increasing a little each lap and Kimi Räikkönen and
01:16:29Heidfeldt in the two Sauber's are still fifth and sixth. In fact as I look down the figures
01:16:36There's not a lot of battling going on anywhere. Fisichella is in 13th place in the Benetton and
01:16:44Bernalde is only one two point two seconds behind him and catching him, but now we're looking at Ralph
01:16:51Michael Schumacher coming up to lap Jacques Villeneuve and he does so
01:16:57How much longer will Jacques Villeneuve put up with being lapped twice in a Grand Prix
01:17:02I don't think that's what he went to BAR to do is it and
01:17:06Another dismal afternoon in many respects for the two Honda powered teams. Where did Jordan get to?
01:17:12We thought they were so strong
01:17:13They were fourth and fifth on the grid very fast in the warm-up
01:17:16But Frentzen a lap down in seventh place and two and a bit seconds off the pace and Villeneuve
01:17:22Eighth place and similar amount of the of the ultimate pace Murray
01:17:27So really a bit of a poor afternoon, you know
01:17:31People don't talk about this very much, but I think Jacques Villeneuve is still suffering
01:17:37The effects of that enormous accident. He had at the first Grand Prix of the year at Melbourne
01:17:44the beginning of March when he
01:17:46Slammed into the wall at enormous velocity
01:17:49I know he's not not feeling well and he's getting remedial treatment for it
01:17:54I believe it's affecting his performance because good as Pannis is he's not as good
01:17:59I believe as Jacques Villeneuve and Pannis has often been seeing Villeneuve off this season
01:18:05But whatever I think the French Canadian must be getting increasingly depressed. He's not he's not an old man
01:18:12He's a long long way from being an old man
01:18:15But Jacques Villeneuve wants to win and he will want to be in a better team than the one he is in at the moment
01:18:21And he's he's coming up to his 30th year. He's got several years in front of him
01:18:26But it's a 1997 world champion and the man who gave Damon Hill such a run for his money the previous year
01:18:33He will want to be up front and he's got the talent to do it. The question is, of course, where can he go?
01:18:40That's the interesting point not too many open spaces Louise Goodman is down in the pits with Ralph Schumacher another retirement
01:18:47I think that's your sixth of the season. What was the problem today?
01:18:50We still have to figure out that was a technical problem rather gearbox or engine. I think which stopped me going and
01:18:56You know, I just decided to stop there was a strange noise going on and I just stopped the engine
01:19:01Differing strategies for the Williams team you went to the one stop. You're happy. That was the way to go
01:19:06Well, I mean as you saw after this after the stop of my teammate
01:19:10I was in front of him and going at a pace of Barry Kello and I think yeah, it would have been the right strategy
01:19:15I mean Kimi, I think was still due to do one stop. So I might have ended up on the podium today. Maybe thanks Ralph
01:19:23Michael Schumacher driving round. He is lapping consistently
01:19:28Half a second slower than Mika Hakkinen and therefore consistently dropping back. The gap is 26 seconds
01:19:35But clearly Michael is not the least bit worried about it
01:19:39He's had his one stop that he planned to have
01:19:42Rubens Barrichello that we just saw there has had his one stop which was what he was planning to have
01:19:48Here is the Brazilian is going to be yet another third position for him
01:19:52He's finished in third position four times already this year and a couple of second places he won, of course the
01:20:01German Grand Prix at Hockenheim last year
01:20:04Starting 18th on the grid and in appalling weather conditions carved his way through to the front
01:20:09He'll be looking for another win in Hockenheim next in the next race two weeks time
01:20:15I don't think he's going to get it because if Michael Schumacher is on the pace that would be his
01:20:2051st Grand Prix victory, which would have taken up to the level of the most winning of all time
01:20:28Alain Prost
01:20:29We thought that was going to happen here or a lot of people did but it clearly hasn't and there is Hakkinen ahead of
01:20:36Räikkönen so there are now only four people on the same lap the same lap 52 out of 60
01:20:42We're getting towards the end of the British Grand Prix. Mika Hakkinen a massive lead over Schumacher
01:20:48Schumacher a massive lead over Barrichello
01:20:52Barrichello is eight seconds ahead of Montoya and it's only those four
01:20:56Hakkinen, Schumacher, Barrichello and Montoya who are on the same lap because both the salvos of Kimi Räikkönen
01:21:05Keep on trying to find new superlatives for this young Finn
01:21:1021 years old and it looks as though he's going to be in the points for the fourth time this year
01:21:17In 11 races in his first season of Formula One, they'll all be after him. Well, they are they're all after him already
01:21:24I'm sure they're trying to nail his contract for the future to find out exactly
01:21:28Which piece of paper he put his signature on with the Salva team and what it says
01:21:34Räikkönen as he said another very mature and calm performers
01:21:37He would certainly know bits of this racetrack from his Formula Renault days here in the British
01:21:43Championships, but a peerless run again from him compared to teammate Heidfell who's seven seconds further down the road
01:21:52Well, Kimi just seems to have all the qualities necessary
01:21:55But is he locked in to a three-year deal with Salva?
01:21:58I wonder would they release him but that Salva car Sergio Rinland did a good job on designing that but starting off with a Ferrari
01:22:05Engine and then presumably the Ferrari gearbox and then also that would position your rear suspension for you as well
01:22:11that's a very good starting block a good foundation for a fast Formula One car and that is certainly what the Salva is the
01:22:18amazing thing is that
01:22:20The man who designed the car you're looking at Sergio Rinland
01:22:24I shook his hand as I walked across the bridge to come to the lottery box this afternoon and
01:22:29For whatever reason and I've never really got to the bottom of it. His sojourn with Salva was a very short one
01:22:35He left the team at the beginning of the season
01:22:37So the man who's designed this brilliant car is is actually looking for a job now and we're on lap 53
01:22:44seven laps including this one to 16 cars left in the race the Minardi of
01:22:50Fernando Alonso is still last
01:23:37I
01:24:07I
01:24:37I
01:24:39I
01:24:41I
01:24:43I
01:25:06Well dare I say because I have been so wrong in making
01:25:11prophecies in the past in the closing stages of a race, but we're now coming up to the end of the
01:25:1855th lap out of 60 of the 2001 British Grand Prix at Silverstone
01:25:24But things really do look set at the beginning and you would expect
01:25:29Any cars that have got a problem to have gone by now if it was going to take them out of the race
01:25:35and that means that
01:25:37Mika Hakkinen
01:25:39Looks like winning his first Grand Prix since the Hungarian Grand Prix last year
01:25:45Which was the twelfth race of the year?
01:25:47He's going to come home victorious at Silverstone and it will be a richly deserved
01:25:53Victory for the very popular and likable Finn here
01:25:56He is coming towards us now and Michael Schumacher is now a full half a minute 30 seconds behind the flying
01:26:05McLaren Mercedes and it's not only going to be an enormous
01:26:09Encouragement to McLaren and to Mika Hakkinen and but to the Mercedes as well because in recent races
01:26:16They have been shaded by the Ferrari v10 engine and the BMW v10 engine and particularly by the Schumacher brothers
01:26:24Michael and Ralph well Mika Hakkinen of course has never won the British Grand Prix has been robbed here before
01:26:30With an engine failure
01:26:32But Hakkinen versus Michael Schumacher rings a few old bells from the three seasons
01:26:38Previous to this as a while since we've really seen them head-to-head
01:26:41But unfortunately, it wasn't to be a true head-to-head this afternoon Michael Schumacher electing for a cruisy afternoon
01:26:48Can't says I fully appreciate
01:26:51It's rather he got on with it and took the fight to to Mika Hakkinen
01:26:55But that's from a fan's point of view and not from Ferrari's point of view
01:26:59Of course, they just want to win the world championship
01:27:00But I still think it would be nice to see him going for a little bit harder than that
01:27:05I've got to say it's not the most inspirational British Grand Prix of all time Mika Hakkinen
01:27:10Has got to be the driver of the day because it has been a good performance difficult really to fully judge
01:27:17Just how good Nick has been today because the rest of them haven't been anywhere near James Allen is in the pits
01:27:23Well, very true Martin, but it's been a very interesting race strategically
01:27:26It's always nice to see people using different ideas
01:27:29But I can tell you there'll be a very serious debrief on strategy in the Williams factory on Monday morning Patrick head the technical director
01:27:36It's not exactly looking disgruntled, but he's certainly looking a lot less than gruntle
01:27:40He's got used to winning races now with BMW Williams
01:27:43And he's not at all happy at the way that Montoya's race was compromised by his early stop and getting caught into traffic
01:27:49He's got a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp
01:27:51And there's a few people going to get a bit of his tongue later on this afternoon
01:27:54I think I wouldn't like to be one of them
01:27:56You know these drivers make it look terribly easy Mika Hakkinen there on a smooth
01:28:02flowing copybook drive
01:28:05Has looked as though he's out on a Sunday afternoon drive once he'd got past Michael Schumacher
01:28:12But think of the stresses these people are under the slowest corner on this circuit is about 55 miles an hour
01:28:19They accelerate to some 200 miles an hour as they're going down to Stowe corner the braking forces the
01:28:27Acceleration forces are absolutely massive. I remember Martin when you took me out in the McLaren two-seater
01:28:33I was just about able to stand five laps of it
01:28:37If you'd said to me, would you like to go on for another couple?
01:28:39I would have wanted to my pride would have made me say yes
01:28:42But I probably would have had to say no they are supremely fit these people
01:28:48And so they should be married Michael Schumacher earns about a million dollars a week during the racing season and we expect excellence for that
01:28:55Yeah, I'd like to be on I'd like to be a pound behind you married
01:28:59Well, here we are
01:29:00We are now
01:29:0358 out of 60 at Silverstone with Rubens Barrichello keeping it neat and tidy all the way around the circuit
01:29:11He has got the Jaguar of Eddie Irvine behind him
01:29:15Which he has just passed again and Rubens Barrichello is is well clear of Montoya Montoya's catching him
01:29:23But he's nine seconds a lap
01:29:25He's nine seconds behind him and he's he's catching him at about a tenth of a second a lap
01:29:31In fact, he's just lapped at almost exactly the same time as Rubens Barrichello in the Ferrari
01:29:37Rubens had delusions of grandeur
01:29:39I think at the beginning of the season
01:29:41He signed a contract to drive for Ferrari in the belief that he would be able to give Michael Schumacher a run for his money
01:29:48And that he would be allowed to do so
01:29:50Well Michael Schumacher has not permitted him to do that and to be fair to Rubens
01:29:55Nor have Ferrari because he's had to move over and let Michael Schumacher through
01:30:01But now we are on lap 59
01:30:04That is the last lap but one at Silverstone and as you look at Rubens Barrichello in third position
01:30:14There is Michael Schumacher in second position and the gap is increasing all the time
01:30:19It's thirty one and a half seconds with two laps to go
01:30:24Between him and Micah Hacken and but I have to say although it hasn't been exciting from our point of view
01:30:31Michael Schumacher has done a very sensible thing
01:30:35He has decided to defer to Micah Hacken and let the thing go ahead
01:30:39The fact that Micah is going to finish four points ahead of him in this race
01:30:44It's not going to make any difference to Michael Schumacher in the driver's championship at all
01:30:49Because Hacken and was only on nine points compared with Michael Schumacher 78 at the beginning of the race lots of stories
01:30:57Ferrari were using their qualifying engine here for the in the race a different specification for the first time
01:31:03I know is that true Mary? Do you think that's a fact? That's what I was told
01:31:06So maybe that's why they've asked
01:31:08As soon as Kutai was out of the race why they've asked Michael just to knock the Reds back a little bit and be sure to
01:31:14Finish this afternoon as Hacken and then through cops for the final time at racing speed this afternoon for the 2001
01:31:22British Grand Prix, he was 33 seconds ahead
01:31:26When he crossed the start finish line at the end of the previous lap
01:31:30So Hacken and then that hangar straight the team tests here
01:31:3420-30 days a year at least and he will know this place like the back of his hand
01:31:38He knows every bump down that hangar straight. He knows every line through this stow corner
01:31:44He knows exactly where to break over the crest for Val and this will be like a cruisy out lap on the first
01:31:51Early run of an average test day for him. He'll just be swanning along
01:31:56He knows that feeling very well, but this time around it means ten World Championship points, Mary
01:32:03Indeed II it does Mika Hackett and back at the top for what is going to be his
01:32:0919th Grand Prix victory and a very welcome one. It's going to be he's going to feel an absolutely liberated man
01:32:16Knowing that this time everything has come together for him out of Brooklyn's for the last time
01:32:22He's just got the double right-hander at Luffield the tremendously quick turn 17, which is woodcoat corner
01:32:30155 miles an hour and for the first time Mika Hacken and wins the British Grand Prix
01:32:37He just cruises across the line and takes the checkered flag
01:32:41Luxuriating in every wheel turn. Well, that's a hat-trick for McLaren then even if Coulthard couldn't pull it off this afternoon
01:32:48Mika Hackett and scores three
01:32:52consecutive British Grand Prix wins for McLaren Mercedes-Benz
01:32:55Second place man, then Michael Schumacher. I'll have those six points. Thank you very much that puts him of course then
01:33:0437 points in the lead of the World Championship with a mere 60 available for the rest of the season
01:33:11Yeah, and because Rubens Barrichello is going to finish in third position
01:33:16It will mean that McLaren and Ferrari in the Constructors Championship
01:33:20Have both scored 10 points at Silverstone and the gap therefore
01:33:25Between Ferrari in the lead and McLaren in second place will remain at a massive
01:33:3252 points with the German Hungarian Belgium Italian
01:33:37American and Japanese Grand Prix still to go Ferrari must be very very happy
01:33:43Montoya crosses the line then for a disappointing fourth
01:33:46remember he was running a strong second before he made that early crucial pit stop and
01:33:52He'll be very disappointed with that and some 68 seconds behind the winner
01:33:58Mika Hacken and Raikkonen and Heidfeld will not have the pleasure of seeing the checkered flag
01:34:03Their fifth and sixth in the two Sauber's because they were over a lap behind so their race is over one lap early
01:34:12Mika Hacken and out of the cockpit taking the plaudits of the crowd and the top ten and Silverstone
01:34:20Schumacher Barrichello
01:34:23McLaren Ferrari Ferrari the top Williams Montoya in fourth position
01:34:27The two Sauber's a superb fifth and sixth both in the points
01:34:32Heights Harold Frentzen seventh for Jordan no points Villeneuve eight for BAR no points Jaguar ninth position
01:34:40They probably won't be too unhappy with that because they said that Silverstone wasn't really their kind of track
01:34:47They're looking for something different, but they are improving all the time
01:34:51Arrows you have Josper Stappen in 10th position and then
01:34:55Completing the other 16 who finished out of the 21 who started
01:35:00Jorna Lacey in the prosthesis 11th ahead of the second Jaguar de la Rosa James news
01:35:06Yes, indeed Murray up down in the McLaren area the tremendous celebration going on down here Ron Dennis as Murray would say
01:35:12Mika Hacken and who never went away is now very definitely back
01:35:15absolutely great race in
01:35:18Copy book from beginning to end right strategy well executed
01:35:23Mixed emotions and really disappointed for David, but it's not over. We took points away from
01:35:31Michael again today, and we have to speed I think we can win obviously more races
01:35:36But it was Mika's day and the championship as far as I'm concerned for David is still very much open absolutely
01:35:41Do you draw any encouragement from the strange pace of Michael Schumacher today?
01:35:45He seemed to be off it really didn't he I think his pace just reflected a one-stop strategy, which was the wrong strategy, but
01:35:51Possibly as always they'll have a reason for
01:35:54Dampening the enthusiasm of our victory, but they'll struggle to do that well done Ron great day today
01:35:59Don't worry. Don't worry Ron. You did a great job
01:36:02Congratulations to Ron Dennis to Martin Whitmarsh to Adrian
01:36:07To Neil Oakley and all the other people at McLaren and working not forgetting Mario
01:36:15The late and very much missed Paul Morgan who had so much to do with the engine of the Bricksworth concern
01:36:23They've won the British Grand Prix
01:36:30Amazingly that launches him straight up to fifth place in the world championship
01:36:34Despite his disastrous season so far ten points carries a lot of weight in the middle of the table a lot of people
01:36:42Scrounging around for one and two points here and there and hacking and then
01:36:46Hardly launches a championship challenge from his lowly position earlier on in the season, but nonetheless
01:36:52He will enjoy that victory very much and Michael then
01:36:57Well, Ron says it was the wrong strategy certainly didn't pay off for anybody this afternoon, but he still ended up ahead of
01:37:05My Barrichello who was on a one-stopper to and ahead of mom toy who was on a two-stopper
01:37:09So I still believe they were merely cruising as soon as Coulthard was out of the race
01:37:14Oh, well says Michael Schumacher. Oh, um job done
01:37:18He continues to lead the world championship now with 84 points
01:37:24And that is a massive increase in his lead over David Coulthard
01:37:29David Coulthard has got Rubens Barrichello inching up on him the gap between the two of them in second and third places is just three points
01:37:37The gap between Rubens who is third and Ralph Schumacher who is for his three points?
01:37:42So this is still going to be a battle for that third position between the Ferrari and the Williams driver
01:37:48But as Martin has just said with one mighty bound
01:37:52Mika Hakkinen has leapt up to fifth position in the drivers championship
01:37:57All albeit some 65 points behind Schumacher as much as David Coulthard
01:38:04Congratulates his teammate. Yeah, that'll be doubly painful for David Coulthard in that
01:38:09Quite clearly the McLaren were the class of the field this afternoon. Maybe Mika would have yielded that win to David
01:38:16He owes him a couple anyway
01:38:17And of course, I think with David's position in the championship
01:38:20Mika may well have been in a position where he wanted to or was forced to hand that win over
01:38:26So David will be very much ruining that first corner coming together with Jarno truly
01:38:31But nonetheless sportsman like of him to go in there and be the first to congratulate Mika
01:38:36the cheery chappy on the right with the dark glasses is
01:38:39Herbie Blash who has worked with and for Bernie Ecclestone for so long
01:38:44To Brabham an ex-Lotus mechanic and he's done a wonderful job in Formula One
01:38:50But there's a good book in her be wouldn't you but you couldn't write it till a few people departed
01:38:55You'll never read it
01:38:56The book that Herbie Blash could write about Formula One would be very very much a bestseller, but sadly
01:39:03Much of it is confidential. So Michael Schumacher happy enough. He's done the job. He's done
01:39:10about an hour and a half drive
01:39:12Mika Hakkinen, there he is
01:39:15Smiley Mika Hakkinen, and that's the great Joe Ramirez on the right who has been with McLaren
01:39:21There's so many other teams for such a long time. And I just just before I came into the commentary box
01:39:26I was talking to him. He's retiring from Formula One after the race at Indianapolis this year and he will be sadly missed
01:39:34But everybody now crowds up because very soon out onto the podium are going to come the victorious three
01:39:42and
01:39:43The winner Mika Hakkinen will receive that magnificent Royal Automobile Club gold trophy
01:39:49which has been presented to all the winners of the British Grand Prix since
01:39:551948 from his Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent one of the really great motor racing
01:40:02Enthusiasts, he's driven Formula One cars himself
01:40:05It's not well known because obviously has to do it in conditions of secrecy
01:40:10But he really knows what it's about and he is a very genuine
01:40:15Enthusiast and there he is
01:40:16Waiting for Mika Hakkinen to come out to get on to the top step of the podium to be joined by Michael
01:40:23Schumacher on the second step and Rubens Barrichello on the third
01:40:27And here they are
01:40:29Hakkinen onto the top step
01:40:31Ferrari are now on 118 points in the Constructors' Championship
01:40:36Compared with McLaren's at 66 and well done dear says Hakkinen, their son Hugo
01:40:45And the Finnish national anthem
01:41:36Speaking about jumping in the air by Mika Hakkinen
01:41:38But he's a very happy man
01:41:40And it is the British national anthem for McLaren
01:42:36For Mika Hakkinen, Adrian Newey, the car's designer, the man on the podium, the fourth man in the grey shirt will be Martin Wittmarsch
01:42:43The managing director on the left-hand side of your picture
01:42:46The managing director of the McLaren team
01:42:49An important day for Mercedes-Benz
01:42:51BMW have been stealing a lot of their glory
01:42:54The fellow German manufacturer
01:42:56But Hakkinen then with that very famous gold trophy
01:42:59Well, there are 60 points left in the Drivers' Championship
01:43:04On the left, Michael Schumacher as Martin Wittmarsch receives the winning Constructors' Trophy
01:43:10From Ted Kunkel, who is the chief executive of Fosters
01:43:14And now the second-place driver is going to receive his award
01:43:19From Richard Cabon, who is the Minister of Sport
01:43:22And the second-place driver is, of course, Michael Schumacher
01:43:26The elder of the two great Schumacher brothers
01:43:29But I was saying, there are 60 points left in the Drivers' Championship
01:43:34And David Coulthard is now 37 points behind Michael Schumacher
01:43:40I'll say again, all is not lost
01:43:43But it is looking better and better for Michael Schumacher
01:43:48And better and better for Ferrari
01:43:51But nothing can look better for Mika Hakkinen than where he is now
01:43:55The champagne sprays again in the hands of this superb Finnish driver
01:44:01And Mika Hakkinen has won at Silverstone
01:44:07Thanks very much indeed, Murray
01:44:08Thanks to Martin Brundle as well
01:44:10Do not go away, we haven't finished yet by any means
01:44:13We have a couple of competitions
01:44:15One to win the latest British Sports Car
01:44:17The result of that Best Murray Banner competition as well
01:44:20And Murray will be joining me here in the studio
01:44:22Expert views from Tony Jardine and Mark Blundell
01:44:26We're going to be hearing from the top three when they've dried off
01:44:29All the other key characters as well
01:44:31We'll be following Jenson Button away from the track
01:44:34And there's the gloss of the Grand Prix ball
01:44:36And the muck and bullets of the Silverstone campsites
01:44:40We will be right back
01:44:53Thank you very much
01:45:03Not a very exciting Grand Prix, I thought
01:45:07A lot of things happen in the beginning
01:45:12There are always a few things you don't know in advance
01:45:16For example the number of pitstops
01:45:18It was clear that Hakkinen didn't have a lot of petrol on board
01:45:22So he could go fast
01:45:24Schumacher couldn't keep up
01:45:26So he just let him go
01:45:28The science that cold hard was already out
01:45:30Then you better cherish those six points
01:45:34Here Joe Ramirez worked with Jan Lammers
01:45:38In the time of Shadow
01:45:40We have to go back to the 70s
01:45:421978 to be exact
01:45:46Better than the car of the Dutchman
01:45:52And now he's in the service of McLaren
01:45:54For years
01:45:59Yes, on the part of cheering, he doesn't really score high
01:46:04But he can drive
01:46:06I personally wouldn't want to buy a second-hand car from this man
01:46:09Norbert Hauk
01:46:12The director of Mercedes
01:46:18Bridgestone 1, 2 and 3
01:46:21And Michelin suffered the wounds
01:46:25It was the 51st victory for Bridgestone
01:46:28And they have 10 less than Michelin
01:46:33For the photo album, the numbers 1, 2 and 3 of the British Grand Prix
01:46:36Edition 2001
01:46:38And we have Ron Dennis at the microphone
01:47:08I think we've done a much better job
01:47:10Obviously, these things don't happen by accident
01:47:13Hopefully we can maintain the momentum through the rest of the season
01:47:17Congratulations, thanks Ron
01:47:21Everything is still open
01:47:23Would he believe it himself, Ron Dennis?
01:47:26Rear-end for cool-time
01:47:28But Sumacher, 37 points with 6 races to go
01:47:33And then this man says, everything is still open
01:47:39But well, you heard it
01:47:43He thought the victory was more important than the championship
01:47:48Probably also because the victory was in the name of his eye apple, Mika Hakkinen
01:47:55We are waiting for the press conference with the numbers 1, 2 and 3
01:47:59And there they are
01:48:08Mika, you've never won here at Silverstone before
01:48:10Indeed, you haven't won in Formula 1 for nearly a year
01:48:13How does it feel?
01:48:15It feels really good
01:48:16Obviously, after all this trouble that's been going on this year
01:48:21So it's good to win it, obviously
01:48:23And particularly here in Silverstone
01:48:27Triumph for the English team and the English crowd
01:48:30So we made a great show, you know
01:48:34Now, you seem to be on it
01:48:35Even though you were well clear of Michael
01:48:37About half a minute clear
01:48:38You seem to be driving really hard right to the final section of the final lap
01:48:41Is that because you kept thinking about the final lap at the Spanish Grand Prix earlier this year
01:48:45Where you pulled off?
01:48:47No, because what I was planning to do
01:48:49I really wanted to push really hard to make a big gap
01:48:52That when I come down and park the car
01:48:54I have time to have a cup of tea when these boys are coming back, you know
01:48:59Well, it worked. Thank you very much, Mika
01:49:02Michael, early in the race, Mika was able to get past you
01:49:06Did you make a mistake at Copse?
01:49:08Or did you just let him by on the run to Becketts?
01:49:10Because you already knew that David Coulthard was out of the race
01:49:14Yes, certainly
01:49:15I mean, I parked the car and waved him by
01:49:18No, what a joke, obviously
01:49:19You've done that many times
01:49:20Yes
01:49:22No, Mika wasn't really the way I would have liked to have it
01:49:29In particular, into Copse
01:49:31I had a lot of problems
01:49:33I got sideways a couple of times at the entry
01:49:36And when it happened with Mika, exactly that happened
01:49:39I lost it at the entry and I managed to keep it on the track
01:49:43That was the only thing I was worried about at this moment
01:49:46And then Mika was beside me and there was nothing I could do against that
01:49:51And then after that, Mika was able to pull clear
01:49:53It was obviously clear in your mind that he was on a two-stop strategy to your one-stop
01:49:58Who decided in Ferrari that you would be stopping just once in the race?
01:50:03It's always a team decision, honestly
01:50:07Thank you very much, Michael
01:50:09Rubens Barrichello, you were the last person to come in for your first stop
01:50:13Did you stay out a particularly long time because you had the Williamses sitting right on your tail?
01:50:19I think we certainly thought it was the best idea
01:50:25I mean, I didn't have the balance I would have liked since Friday, to be honest with you
01:50:31So I was having to drive it quite carefully
01:50:35Although I was trying to be quite fast
01:50:39And I was lucky that my car was quite good at exiting buckets
01:50:43Otherwise, I couldn't hold anybody
01:50:46But it was good to see Montoya coming into the pits
01:50:50Then I had the chance to come in and still be in front of him
01:50:53After that, the car with the new tyres was a little bit better
01:50:58So it was okay to drive away
01:51:02Indeed, in the final section when Montoya came back after his second stop
01:51:06You seemed to have a problem
01:51:07Were you able to relax a bit because you were clearly in third place
01:51:11More points for Ferrari in the Constructors' Cup
01:51:13I believe Ferrari are now 52 points clear of McLaren
01:51:17Yeah, I've been told that I was a second faster than Montoya
01:51:22And that Mika was quite clear from Michael that it was nothing to gain anymore
01:51:27So yeah, I had a chance to relax
01:51:30Thank you very much, Rubens
01:51:31Back to you, Mika
01:51:33It seemed from the outset of this weekend that you were in a more relaxed frame of mind
01:51:37Maybe that's not a 100% accurate interpretation
01:51:40But it certainly looked that way
01:51:42Is this a new Mika Hakkinen?
01:51:43Are you now back on the winning trail and are we going to see more wins before the end of the season?
01:51:48Well, hopefully there will be more winnings at the end of the season
01:51:52But before this Grand Prix we had a very good test
01:51:57We were able to get a good balance to the car
