00:00:00Calm mature voice of reason speaking
00:00:03This is a mammoth day on a mammoth occasion in a mega place
00:00:08But don't let's preempt things it isn't all over bar the shouting for Michael Schumacher
00:00:14Like I always say anything can happen in Formula one and it usually does and here in Hungary
00:00:20It certainly isn't over until the fat lady sings the next one and three-quarter hours
00:00:25I'll show us whether Michael Schumacher is going to be singing the blues or a
00:00:30Triumphant aria and who would have thought when he went out to join the grid that Michael Schumacher of all people
00:00:38Would go across the gravel track at considerable velocity at turn 12
00:00:43Now this you saw Martin trying to get into the Ferrari people to talk to them look at them
00:00:48Now there has been a major haroosh going on down there. They've got out the sticky tape
00:00:53they've replaced a bargeboard and
00:00:56Just little things like that can upset the equilibrium of a team can damage the car slightly
00:01:02And David Coulthard, of course is ready to take advantage of any weakness that Ferrari shown
00:01:08Because as we all know it's now or never in Hungary for David Coulthard and the McLaren team
00:01:16It means so much to them. It means so much to Ferrari
00:01:19They've won the Constructors Championship Ferrari for the last two years how they would love to make it a hat-trick and Michael Schumacher if
00:01:26He gets the world championship here will be the first driver in the history of Formula One to win two world
00:01:35championships for two different
00:01:38Constructors only two people have had four world championships before Michael
00:01:42Sorry Alain Prost, of course and the great Juan Manuel Fangio
00:01:47And neither of them got two for two different constructors
00:01:51Now at the Hungaroring the long straight that you're looking at there or comparatively long straight
00:01:58Leads into turn one a tricky double 90-degree right-hander which falls away
00:02:03And it does mean that the cars and drivers have got a longer run at that first corner than they have at some circuits like
00:02:10for instance
00:02:12Monaco and hopefully there's considerably less chance therefore of a coming together. We've had it before we've had a coming together on turn three
00:02:20which is where they start the climb up this circuit wonderful place to watch a Grand Prix and
00:02:27very very very difficult like Monaco indeed notoriously difficult to pass on but
00:02:34Nigel Mansell proved in 1989 that it's more than possible to pass because he started 12th on the grid
00:02:42for Ferrari
00:02:45Which is where coincidentally?
00:02:46Jorna Lacey is in the Jordan and he fought through to win the race with a magnificent passing maneuver on
00:02:54Ayrton Senna's McLaren
00:02:57Nigel in the Ferrari so things building for David Coulthard very significant
00:03:02I thought Martin that as a chap who knows David so well you deliberately kept away from him on the grid
00:03:09I think you know David wants to do absolutely the best he can he wants to win as many races as he can and does not
00:03:15Want to psychologically give up on that world championship until it's mathematically gone
00:03:20And I think that's the only attitude you can take you never know as Luca di Montezemolo said the boss man of Ferrari
00:03:27You know in the last four weeks Michael's had two enormous accidents and both Ferraris dropped out of the last Grand Prix
00:03:33So it's not over until it's over. We've seen Michael Schumacher going through the gravel trap already today on the outlap
00:03:41We know he's been busy changing the front wing settings, which absolutely amazes me
00:03:45They're still tweaking the car
00:03:46Although they do have a reasonable known quantity of track temperature equals X amount of front aero balance or whatever
00:03:54They do have a graph they work to but surely this race is not an absolute given this afternoon Mary
00:04:01Yeah, you probably don't know this Martin because you've rushed out from the grid
00:04:04But they've actually had to change a bargeboard on Michael Schumacher's Ferrari and the old role of the ubiquitous sticky tape was out
00:04:12It's won a few Grand Prix's before hasn't it?
00:04:15They'll gaffer tape but cool thought we also now had a bit of a gearbox gremlin
00:04:18So they've changed the spare car from Hakanen's name into his name and setting so put that card not exactly absolutely perfect either
00:04:28Here we go, then this is the beginning of the action not the race action
00:04:33This of course is the formation lap
00:04:36You've gone around this circuit with Martin and seen what it's like
00:04:40Now you could do the same thing as the grid in the background clears and the temperature here. I can tell you is now
00:04:4841 degrees the track temperature this race is gonna last some one and three-quarter hours
00:04:54It's one of the longest in terms of time
00:04:57Go on freezer that is it's enormously grueling for the drivers tough on the cars
00:05:02Tough on the brakes tough on the gearboxes tough on so many things
00:05:06So they're climbing up to and out of turn five in this 14 turn circuit now, which is where the wiggly bits begin
00:05:14Yeah, you see a lot of unforced errors at this racetrack during the course of a race
00:05:18We can do because it is so dirty just off lines a very narrow
00:05:24Line through the entire distance of this two-and-a-half mile circuit and we saw it even in the F3
00:05:303000 race yesterday people good drivers making silly unforced errors
00:05:36But at this highest of high levels in Formula one, we shouldn't be seeing too much of it this afternoon
00:05:42But the pace is going to be hard. It's a breathless racetrack it really just like Monte Carlo
00:05:46You've been going for what seems an eternity and they hang you out a pit board that says 50 laps to go and you can't
00:05:52believe it
00:05:56Forth on the grid, which I think is better than he and Williams and BMW and Michelin whose tires they are using
00:06:04Expected him to be his teammates Juan Pablo Montoya down in eighth position
00:06:09There is Tasso Marquez in the Minardi bringing up Maria and the smart cookies that are starting on the right-hand side
00:06:15It is very very dirty line here should have been this morning running down that side
00:06:21Trying to at least clean some of it only two or three of them did one of whom was cool thought who has the greatest
00:06:26Need to find some bites and grip as he tries to apply over 800 horsepower traction control or not
00:06:33Through the two skinny rear tires and you saw the streaks of rubber in front of cool farts car where they've deliberately been
00:06:41spinning wheels to put rubber on the track to maximize the grip the
00:06:46Doctor's car comes up in the background of what's those lights at the bottom left corner of your screen one on
00:07:06Hello's gained a place. This is what Ferrari won by David Coulthard
00:07:10There is y'all know Trudy coming up and diving through on the inside
00:07:15But it's Michael Schumacher leading
00:07:18Second Jaguar off in the first corner in the gravel trap any Irvine out of the race already
00:07:24and that is not a safety car or red flag situation and a
00:07:29Minardi rejoining the racetrack to a turn to but it was curious to start Mary
00:07:34They all got I was looking out of the window while you were taking us through it all the front got away
00:07:39But the McLaren did not seem to accelerate in the same way that the Ferrari did through the second phase of the start if you like
00:07:46I'm back and I simply drove past
00:07:49David Coulthard down towards the first corner and it's a dream scenario for Ferrari this early in the race
00:07:56My question I can clear track in front of him. He's teammate Rubens Barrichello behind him. Look at the gap
00:08:03I'm not accusing Barrichello of starting to delay the people behind him already
00:08:08But it's going to be wonderful for Michael Schumacher to know and he will know that he's got a scarlet
00:08:14Between him and the third-place man who he fears in this race or had every reason to fear in this race with David
00:08:22Coulthard up there and away goes Schumacher
00:08:24Barrichello, Coulthard behind him
00:08:26And the crowd erupts outside the commentary box window
00:08:29They want a Ferrari victory this afternoon the vast majority of them anyway
00:08:34And at the moment, of course, it is looking good 1.3 seconds ahead of Barrichello over the start finish line was Michael Schumacher
00:08:42and already then Coulthard closing up to the gearbox of Barrichello, but as we know well is
00:08:49It's difficult to pass a you have to muscle your way through at this racetrack
00:08:52No change at the top from the grid position Schumacher lead. Yes, there is Barrichello ahead of Coulthard down to third
00:08:59Ralph Schumacher started fourth is fourth. Trulli started fifth is fifth. Let's hope he keeps going
00:09:04He's had so much bad luck this year
00:09:06Mikko Häkkinen started sixth is sixth and Nick Heidfeldt in the bacala. Here we go
00:09:11Here's the start and watch the first three cars. They're all the way absolutely in unison
00:09:16Coulthard tries to cover his line, but look just does not have the acceleration unless Barrichello is significantly lighter
00:09:22I think that's down to electronics effectively
00:09:26And we're just gonna miss in the background Eddie Irvine falling initially off the track
00:09:31And finally, we see him spinning into the gravel and out of retirement already
00:09:36I think it was simply the driver error did not appear to
00:09:40Trip over anybody and Irvine buries the throttle, but he's not getting out of it
00:09:44And this will be the incident with the Minardi at turn to find himself running out of space on the outside
00:09:50And again, just really driver error. Okay, but let's consider this
00:09:55We haven't talked about strategy yet because we don't know what it is
00:09:59It is not inconceivable surely that McLaren are hoping and intending to stay out longer than Ferrari
00:10:06In which case they would have a heavier fuel load and you can see the McLaren there and in fourth place
00:10:12It is Ralph Schumacher. So maybe there is a strategic or consideration
00:10:17We're expecting them all to do two stops Eddie Irvine making his way back after a very short race
00:10:23You sure he's not trying to make his way out of the circuit there
00:10:26I imagine Eddie will not be too pleased nor will Jaguar at that first corner incident
00:10:33Michael then stretching that lead to
00:10:36Actually, it's just a fraction over 1.3 seconds still on this lap. He's about a tenth of a second
00:10:41Who's beginning to pile on some fast sector times now
00:10:45But he's gonna have a job leapfrogging that Ferrari of Barrichello's Michael looking like he's in cruise mode already
00:10:53Yeah, it's just a two-and-a-half mile circuit riding with Kulthar starting again. Yes a nice overhead shot
00:10:59Then look he goes to cover his line. He probably should have been much more aggressive
00:11:02Barrichello is literally just gonna power past down to that first corner and there's absolutely nothing you can do about that. So
00:11:10Let's see
00:11:11I don't think any I mean three stopping could well be the fastest way that you get caught up in traffic
00:11:15Forget it
00:11:16So to stop is the optimum a one-stop cost you another 20 seconds
00:11:21The only way you do that is if you were towards the middle of the pack
00:11:24I have a feeling Michelin runners are not coming to the party today Murray
00:11:28Well, David Coulthard is a long way from giving up. We had Rubens Barrichello do a fastest lap
00:11:33We're on lap 4 out of 77 now. Incidentally, David Coulthard has just replied with a
00:11:39119.6 and that compares with Nigel Mansell's all-time record of
00:11:45118.3 that was way back in
00:11:481992 with the all-seeing all-dancing Williams Renault and you can see the Coulthard there in the
00:11:56Who we are with now is hanging on to Barrichello in front of it turn 11
00:12:02Gentle fall down to 12 where Coulthard taught the bottom out of his car in free practice on Friday that suddenly put him on his back
00:12:09Foot through the rest of practice and qualifying and he's going to be sitting there
00:12:14moaning and
00:12:16Hating the fact that he did not manage to get ahead of Barrichello into that force
00:12:21They had a barricade into that first corner is going to compromise the rest of his afternoon. No doubt about it
00:12:27Well James Allen, what's the news?
00:12:29Well, I'm looking at last year's records Murray and the McLaren's did come in later for their first stop tacking and came in on lap
00:12:3631 of Coulthard lap 32, whereas Michael Schumacher was in on lap 27, so it's quite possible
00:12:43They are carrying a little bit more fuel perhaps another 10 kilos
00:12:46But as Martin was saying tactically the advantage has definitely been handed to Ferrari now
00:12:51Davy Coulthard did not want Rubens Barrichello in front of him. Thanks James. Yes, Michael Schumacher could run his race
00:12:57Undoubtedly knows what he's on. He won here in
00:13:011994 for Benetton he won here in
00:13:041998 for Ferrari and he was second last year
00:13:07So he knows the hungaro ring so does Rubens Barrichello of course who was fourth last year
00:13:13In his first season for Ferrari and David Coulthard. He's done well here. He's had a couple of second places
00:13:20He's had a third place and the three top men are way out front
00:13:23And it's been all this talk about Mika Hakkinen going off the boil what he started six
00:13:29Then he is still only in the sixth position and at the present moment
00:13:34It looks as though Jenson Button is getting a 10 second penalty
00:13:38Yes, we some kind of incident at the start Jenson Button who is down in 16th position
00:13:44We're assuming that he jumped the start. He did indeed jump the start
00:13:49So Jenson Button with a stop-go penalty
00:13:54Louise is with Eddie Irvine. I am indeed Martin Eddie. Was that just one of your do-or-die starts that didn't quite come off
00:13:59No, I honestly don't know the start was bad because I'm on the wrong side of the grid
00:14:03So I lost a place to physicality and I got on the outside
00:14:06And I was just good around outside next to the car stop sideways
00:14:09I don't know whether someone hit me or whether I just lost it. I have no idea
00:14:12Ten seconds covering the top six now
00:14:16Michael Chewbacca has now decided to get the pedal down. He has just gone faster, but I'm a Barrichello or
00:14:24Cool cars behind him and so he's going to start pulling it away a bit
00:14:28The gap now is some one and a half seconds between him and his second man Rubens Barrichello
00:14:34There's plenty of time this afternoon if he wants to suddenly put a spurt on as Hakkinen did here last year
00:14:39But remember another little trick that Michael pulled yesterday
00:14:42He only did two flying laps in qualifying both of which would comfortably have put him on pole position
00:14:48Therefore saving a further two sets of those critical seven sets of tires
00:14:53He's had to run since qualifying so we know when he comes in for a pit stop
00:14:57He will always have the best of the tires providing
00:15:01He doesn't get a road set or an out-of-balance set
00:15:04But it usually is worth taking the risk and now cool God for some reason just struggling by a tenth of a second
00:15:10To hang on to those two Ferraris four tenths of a second pace
00:15:15between Ralph Schumacher in fourth place and Michael Schumacher
00:15:19Who is leading the race and already Ralph Schumacher is over seven seconds in fourth place
00:15:26Behind the race leader Michael Schumacher and button in the pits out of view of you at the moment Jensen button in for his stop
00:15:34And go penalty to add just a little bit more misery to his season there. He is now. Yeah poor Jensen
00:15:40He qualified well well down, and he was only 22nd in the warm-up this morning
00:15:46But nevertheless Benetton are very very upbeat. They have a completely new aerodynamic package
00:15:53They have all sorts of engine modifications
00:15:55They say things haven't worked look at that front wing very like the Ferrari wing which has set the model for
00:16:01New front wings this season, but Benetton are much more optimistic about the rest of the season although
00:16:09Jensen button hasn't got very much to shout about at the present moment and his teammate
00:16:14Fizzy Fizzy Keller is well down the picking order. He's in 14th place as over the line comes Schumacher Barry
00:16:21Hello, David Coulthard, and we are already in this race over one tenth distance seven laps completed
00:16:2877 lap race a new fastest lap of the race for Coulthard that time around a one eighteen point nine
00:16:34Seven five and the gap down to just eight tenths of a second Michael
00:16:39I wonder just how comfortably is with this car. We know he's been through the gravel trap of course
00:16:43They would have changed the tires that you always change the tires anyway
00:16:46To minimize the risk of a puncture on the out lap because there have been other race been a Porsche Super Cup race for example
00:16:52And occasionally we do get debris so they don't risk puncture
00:16:56So we know he'll be on a better set of tires anyway
00:16:58But he is not really stretching away quite as I would imagine and back Alan Coulthard
00:17:05Comfortably just keeping him in range
00:17:07Yeah
00:17:07Ralph Schumacher on his own in fourth place bit of a ding-dong going on between Yano Trolley fifth and Mika Hakanen
00:17:14Who is sixth in the McLaren now?
00:17:17You heard Jim Rosenthal say earlier on that if Ferrari can finish seven points ahead of the McLaren team in this race
00:17:25They will take the constructors
00:17:28Championship, well, they're on a possible 16 points at the present moment and the McLaren are on a possible
00:17:35Five points at the moment, but there's a long long way to go before this race is completed
00:17:41And as you can see the top three are as much together now as they have been at any time during the race and Rubens
00:17:47Barrichello starts to speed up. Yes. He's a match the 18.9 a fraction faster
00:17:52So they're very evenly matched to the front Ralph Schumacher
00:17:54Not too tardy either Mika Hakanen having a bit of a false look down the inside trying to distract Yano Trolley
00:18:02Truly fifth Hakanen sixth was still in grid position with the exception of Barrichello moving ahead of Coulthard
00:18:09for that second place
00:18:10But Ralph Schumacher pretty much keeping pace with the leaders albeit
00:18:16Some five and a half seconds behind David Coulthard and Jordan, of course desperately won constructors points
00:18:22They're only down in sixth position in the constructors contest
00:18:26Just one point behind the BAR team and four points behind the Sauber team
00:18:32Now we haven't said anything about the Sauber runners so far
00:18:35I can tell you but Nick Hyde-Felt is the faster of the two at the present moment
00:18:39He's in seventh place in the race where he started on the grid his teammate Kimi Raikkonen
00:18:45He's ninth where he started jam between them is Juan Pablo Montoya who started eighth and is eighth
00:18:51So this is the significant thing about the race so far in terms of the top ten or so
00:18:56Is the fact that Rubens Barrichello got ahead of David Coulthard into second place at the start
00:19:03You've heard us say at Norseum how difficult it is to pass at the Hungaroring and you are seeing living proof of it now
00:19:10And sits behind the rear wing of Jarno Trodde's Jordan
00:19:14Yes, and he's lapping about one and a half seconds slower than I think the potential of that car
00:19:19That's what Coulthard's doing up the front two times a world champion
00:19:23One of the all-time great Formula One drivers Micka Hakkinen if he's got an Achilles heel Murray
00:19:28When he gets buried down the pack a little bit
00:19:30He doesn't seem always to be able to do anything about it as Luciano Berti
00:19:36Spins out of the race in Prost number 23
00:19:40Yeah, make a you're quite right Martin liquor liquor likes to be out front and then he is peerless
00:19:45He can just hook guide into reverse
00:19:47I think he's got a better chance of reversing out of there than going forwards put it in reverse and you may just survive
00:19:53For another few laps. You've got the edge on him because you can see his rear wheels and he can't know that's a fact
00:20:00So no, he's out
00:20:02It looks as though he's out and Barrichello is now less than a second behind the leader as you see here
00:20:08Jarno Trulli and Pedro de la Rosa. I think it'll be a Lacey won't it?
00:20:14Lacey the p13 trying to take p12 away from Pedro de la Rosa
00:20:20Does he make it stick around the outside into turn two? I'll be seriously seriously impressed if he does and
00:20:27He well that was too easy that in no way de la Rosa should have allowed that to happen
00:20:32Nice move brilliant move from a Lacey set him up into turn one made it stick into turn two and a well-earned 12th position
00:20:39Yeah, just remember the top three who are of course Schumacher Barrichello Coulthard
00:20:43Here are the rest fourth is Ralph Schumacher as Bertie walks in
00:20:48Fifth is Jarno Trulli sixth is Hakanen seventh is Nick Heidfeld just behind Hakanen
00:20:53Eight is Montoya and ninth is Raikkonen and 10th is Pannis 11th is Villeneuve
00:20:59So Pannis is doing very well indeed. Jarno Lacey
00:21:02You've just seen move up into 12th position in his first race in the Jordan ahead of Pedro de la Rosa
00:21:10The sole Jaguar left Giancarlo Fisicala who is in 14th position
00:21:1515th is Jasper Stapp and then it's Alonso Bernaldi and
00:21:19Frentzen ahead of Marquez and the button is 20th
00:21:23And that is about it with Eddie Irvine out of the race
00:22:49Oh
00:23:06Yeah, I can see where we can
00:23:19Oh
00:23:29Erica switch the car off
00:23:41That 13 out of 77 at the hungaro ring
00:23:45And it is continuing to look very good indeed for Michael Schumacher as his teammate Rubens Barrichello
00:23:52Retains a second place and the arrows
00:23:56Are there of Enrique Bernaldi is removed from the track?
00:24:00We didn't see him go off but he obviously went into the gravel trap and out of the race
00:24:04And now here is Michael Schumacher closing up to lap
00:24:08We've seen I think two significant laps where Barrichello
00:24:12Unquestionably slowed down he's slowed by over a second a lap Michael put in a couple of real sprinters to
00:24:20Move the gap forward to 4.1 seconds. They will be keeping an eye on
00:24:25He's near enough to be a nuisance to Michael Schumacher this afternoon
00:24:29And of course, they'll be wondering just how much fuel he's got on board
00:24:32They will know the cool car was very fast in the warm-up this morning
00:24:36Plus of course Michael is coming up to traffic
00:24:39So they've built themselves a gap a bit of team play going on here now from Ferrari
00:24:44Michael with a four-second cushion to give him more comfort through the back markers
00:24:49Well, it's certainly turning out to be a character-building year for Jenson Button
00:24:53He's just been lapped by Michael Schumacher as has Tarso Marquez who is in
00:24:5920th position
00:25:0118th position ahead of Jenson Button and you've seen Bernal digger out of the race Bertie is out of the race
00:25:07Irvine is out of the race. So three retirements 19 left lap 14
00:25:13Schumacher's lead is increasing all the time
00:25:16Unless going over that travel gravel track damaged his car in some way which seems very unlikely from the way he's going
00:25:23He is looking good and cool start needs to get intimate with the gearbox of Rubens Barrichello's Ferrari
00:25:30They're coming up to the two back markers and a good chance for him to hopefully get in the thick of it
00:25:34And maybe one of his few chances this afternoon of passing that Ferrari and you were had a quick flash of panace there
00:25:42I think it was who's currently back in 10th place in the BAR. So Michael Schumacher now
00:25:484.4 seconds ahead running a report on the world championship situation
00:25:53Michael Schumacher has to finish three points ahead of David Coulthard to put it beyond his reach and he is now
00:26:02Some six points ahead. He's on a potential ten points
00:26:05Coulthard is on a potential four points and Barrichello is still between them
00:26:10And if my mathematics are correct Ferrari are on for taking the constructors world championship as well in these current positions
00:26:16They need just six points more than McLaren today to become once again the world constructors champions
00:26:23Unless I am very much mistaken Martin. You're absolutely right. I thought it was seven, but it's it is seven
00:26:29so seven points between
00:26:31Ferrari and McLaren and it will be the constructors championship for Ferrari as well as the drivers championship for Michael Schumacher
00:26:39But as I said earlier on it is not over until the winner sees the checkered flag
00:26:45You're including tact in seven on you. I'm gonna work it out again. I'm sure it's six
00:26:50Michael Schumacher lap 16 lead 5.3 seconds and coming towards us now
00:26:56Ralph Schumacher who has left Tosso markers
00:27:00well, we
00:27:02Expected the BMW powered Michelin shod Williams runners not to do as well
00:27:08I've got a ring as they have done and other circuits notably Hockenheim two weeks ago when well
00:27:16Sorry
00:27:17Hockenheim in the end of July when Ralph Schumacher won and of course Canada when Ralph Schumacher won and Imola where he did the
00:27:25same thing and that's because of the characteristics of the car and the circuit and Ferrari have
00:27:31continued developing their car in spite of the fact that they're already working on the
00:27:372002 car to replace this one. They want this championship desperately it matters to them
00:27:44historically realistically
00:27:46Naturally for the pride of themselves the pride of Italy and they're pushing led by John tot
00:27:52Rory burn
00:27:54Ross Braun and Paolo Martinelli the engine man
00:27:57And they've even been modifications to the engine for this race as well as a special aerodynamic package
00:28:03Here comes the battle for second place led by Rubens Barrichello
00:28:08Followed by David Coulthard as the race leader goes into turn two
00:28:13And now turn three that 181 I think is a new lap record Mary isn't it?
00:28:18I think that finally beats the Mansell time of 92
00:28:22So a new lap record of this circuit then after 16 years of Grand Prix racing here
00:28:28Michael Schumacher definitely on a charge and Coulthard was beginning to fall back from Barrichello
00:28:34He's had to put a spurt on he too is down in the low woman 18s
00:28:38And of course Michael Schumacher is in a glorious rhythm now
00:28:42He took pole position. He got away first
00:28:45He's increased his lead all the time and he's in that delightful position of having the rhythm going and he's carving
00:28:53His way through the field and look at it
00:28:56Clear track behind it and he's half a minute ahead of sixth place man, Micah Hacken and
00:29:02Yes
00:29:08By taking a
00:29:10Magnificent start from third on the grid going past David Coulthard past pole position holder Michael Schumacher last year
00:29:17Hacking and control the race from the front last year as Michael Schumacher is doing that cloud of dust there
00:29:23Yeah
00:29:24Cooke died running wide in the last turn goes over the line still in in fact an absolutely identical time for
00:29:31Barrichello and called out a 118 point five eight seven two a thousands of a second
00:29:36Cooked up kicking up the dust as he's definitely trying to find a way of getting on the power earlier in the final corner
00:29:43To chase down those two Ferraris. So how are we going for pit stops?
00:29:47This is a lap 18 if Ferrari do the same this year as they did last year
00:29:52They will be in round about nine laps from now the first of them
00:29:57Which should would obviously be Michael Schumacher, but we'll have to wait and see they might be on a different strategy
00:30:03The McLaren's as we said earlier on stayed out for another four laps last year
00:30:08And it may well be that they'll do the same and that David Coulthard could potentially take the lead
00:30:14But then of course it would all change when he had to come in at least that's the usual theory
00:30:19But this race is going to depend just as much as all the others have in the past since pit stops began
00:30:25Not just on the car not just on the driver
00:30:27But on those mechanics who drill and drill and drill to refuel the cars and replace four tires and wheels
00:30:35And we must not forget that the fuel rigs recently had the new ones that were introduced this year have given a lot of trouble
00:30:43Wouldn't surprise me
00:30:44Farrell came in earlier than the other two stoppers would be smart of Ferrari to give him a lesser fuel load
00:30:51He's on the he was on the grippy side of the track behind
00:30:53Michael on the grid and he had a good chance of beating Coulthard down in that first corner, which is exactly what happened
00:31:00But we'll have to wait and see how that unfolds. We'll be back shortly
00:32:23I
00:32:53I
00:32:55I
00:33:18Like I see about continuing to carve his way through the field on that 21 out of 77
00:33:25Having started from that meteoric pole position so much faster than the second-place man on the grid
00:33:33David Coulthard and he's really rubbing in the joint superiority of his car
00:33:39And his ability here at the hungaro ring today
00:33:43David Coulthard seems to have got the message again
00:33:45Maybe he is now having a real attack about Rubens Barrichello
00:33:51Because he's just done the fastest first sector of the race
00:33:55What do I mean by first sector?
00:33:57well
00:33:57This circuit as ever is split up into three parts. The first part goes from the start to
00:34:02Turn four and the second part goes up to round about turn
00:34:0812 and then the completion of the lap that comes from the third sector and they are all
00:34:14Individually timed and the drivers know exactly what is happening because they have an electronic readout
00:34:21How on earth they have the time to look at them is beyond me just gives them a plus and a minus so they pretty
00:34:26much know
00:34:27Whether they're up or down they don't really have time to think about how much but they get in an indicator
00:34:32That's more for qualifying really than the race. It's obviously irrelevant or relative performances to the other cars
00:34:39that's more important as
00:34:41Michael Schumacher laps Giancarlo Fisichella current 14th place man and at this rate
00:34:48Before half-distance Michael Schumacher is going to be lapping the likes of Hakanen and truly up there in fifth and sixth positions
00:34:56Jenson Button surges through just as Alonso comes out of the pits
00:35:01And now here is Michael Schumacher closing up on the sole Jaguar left in the race after Eddie Irvine's
00:35:08Departure into the gravel trap on lap one. It's Pedro de la Rosa and this enables you to compare the comparative
00:35:14Performances of the Jaguar with its Ford Cosworth engine and the Ferrari with its Ferrari engine and the way
00:35:21No, I say de la Rosa moves over and lets it through. Yeah, blue flags are waving de la Rosa on Michelin's
00:35:26Of course, that's the big difference today
00:35:28I think as much as anything because Michelin for whatever reason having been so strong in the previous few races have not bought a
00:35:35Tire that really bites into this very very slick racetrack
00:35:40They've not been able to really bite hold of this type particular type of tarmac
00:35:45And that's why the best Michelin runner Ralph Schumacher is now in 20 seconds behind his brother Michael in fourth position
00:35:53So if Michael Schumacher keeps it up here is Fisichella out of the rain out of the pits
00:35:58He's just completed his sole pit stop
00:36:01Alonso has been in Fredson has been in Jenson Button has been in none of the top 13
00:36:08Drivers have yet stopped but we are getting towards the first of two pit stops
00:36:15Levels, we're on lap 23 now and we can expect them to come in in three four five laps time
00:36:22It's always a scary moment when as you as Coulthard was then your second man through so often
00:36:28They don't see you
00:36:29I got taken out of the Detroit Grand Prix exactly that way once when I was
00:36:34Lapping with Alboreto in the Ferrari we were moving through the field and
00:36:38So often and it happened so many times the driver you're lapping realizes
00:36:43There's one cup if you're really in close formation
00:36:45It doesn't always know there are two of you coming along can so often
00:36:49Turn in on the second of the two cars now just to tell you how difficult it is to pass here
00:36:55Between the fifth and the ninth men on the track that's Jarno Trulli Hacken and Heidfeld
00:37:01Montoya and Kimi Räikkönen there is just two point seven seconds
00:37:06We haven't seen them, but it is a very very high speed crocodile
00:37:10Michael's playing games just done a one seventeen point four smashing even his new lap record
00:37:16He's absolutely playing around this afternoon and just he'll put the spurts in when he has to he's got it
00:37:24absolutely under control only
00:37:27Reliability can now stop or as I've got a pit stop problem can now stop Michael Schumacher becoming four times world champion
00:37:34Yeah, and that fastest lap. He's just done was faster than his own pole position time last year. Here's the crocodile
00:37:41I was telling you about
00:37:44Look at them absolutely nose to tail that is Kimi Räikkönen in ninth position
00:37:49Ahead of him is Montoya in the Williams ahead of him is Heidfeld in the Sauber and ahead of him is Mika Hakkinen
00:37:57So they're all looking for a way past but none of them are succeeding in finding it
00:38:02Yes interesting, isn't it?
00:38:03Three of that pack Murray have been linked with taking Mika Hakkinen's seat if he decides to retire
00:38:10so truly Heidfeld and Räikkönen all being strongly linked if Hakkinen decides not to
00:38:17Re-up or whatever is going on there at McLaren for next year and a lot of intrigue around that. Well wait
00:38:26The world championship if Michael Schumacher succeeds in staying where he is
00:38:31Really is starting to look like a fait accompli
00:38:34I want the situation between
00:38:36David Coulthard and Ralph Schumacher for second in the championship as you watch Mika Hakkinen pursuing Jarno Trulli
00:38:43Trying trying trying is that Coulthard of course in third position has got an edge over
00:38:50Ralph Schumacher who's got to get past him and pull away if he is to challenge David Coulthard second place in the world championship
00:38:57And over the line
00:38:59Hakkinen has a good position for a good slipstream, but he's absolutely nowhere near by the end of the straight
00:39:04Well, certainly nowhere near chance to overtake had it a bit of a while ago got on the dirty side of the track
00:39:10And that's what sent Eddie Irvine off in the first corner managed to still hold off Nick Heidfeld
00:39:17Hakkinen looking increasingly
00:39:19Frustrated quite clearly can lap much faster. There's some two to three seconds off the leading place
00:39:25They're nearly 50 seconds now this group from fifth downwards behind the leader James is in the pits with Montoya
00:39:32Well Montoya is the man definitely to watch in this pack guys
00:39:35I was talking to the strategist before the race and one of the tactics around here at the Hungaro ring
00:39:40If you're a fast car out of position is to run a one-stop fuel load
00:39:44As you can see Yano truly just ducking through the back markers and if Montoya is doing that today
00:39:49This has played very much into his hands
00:39:50He's in this pack and of course, he only he has one less fuel stop to make than the guys
00:39:55He's racing against so keep an eye out for him because that tactic if he's done it will push him up ahead of Yano
00:40:01Truly into fourth place in the race. Yeah could could score him a point or two this afternoon
00:40:06Sure, I should have said James is with information on Montoya
00:40:09Not actually with him because as is absolutely clear. He's currently eighth in the race
00:40:14Yano truly and
00:40:18Six the nothing the flying thin as he signs himself
00:40:22Will enable him at the present moment to get past the flying Italian Eddie Jordan there and Ian Phillips
00:40:28Not too unhappy with what they are seeing because Yano truly started fifth on the grid. He's retained that position
00:40:36He's kept Mika hacking in behind him hacking and has kept Hyde felt behind him
00:40:42Hyde felt has done the same with Montoya and Montoya has done the same thing with Kimi Räikkönen
00:40:48And Olivier Pannis is a head of Jacques Villeneuve the 10th and 11th places
00:40:53They started in a reverse the situation because Villeneuve was 10th on the grid and Pannis was in 11th place
00:41:01And in 12th position John a Lacey who has carved his way up into the place where he is now
00:41:07We're on lap 27 in this 77 lap Hungarian Grand Prix. Michael Schumacher is now
00:41:1512.6 seconds ahead of his teammate Rubens Barrichello having made the fastest lap on lap
00:41:2323 out of 77 and let's just enjoy this truly in the yellow George with the Honda engine
00:41:30Mika Hakkinen in the silver and black
00:41:33McLaren with the Mercedes-Benz engine followed by the Ferrari
00:41:40Strangely, we've often seen some great qualifying performances from truly over the years and particularly this year
00:41:45But he always seems to be slightly on his back foot during the race
00:41:49I hear they tell me the Jordan can eat its rear tires quite quickly. They don't seem to give that performance
00:41:56I don't know if that's true or not or whether it's truly his mindset. We know he's super fit
00:42:00We know he's super fast, but he always seems to be just slightly under pressure and going backwards rather than going forwards
00:42:07And I think that really summarizes probably why Eddie Jordan has so much frustration that his team haven't delivered their promise this year
00:42:14Yeah, but if truly can keep it on the track
00:42:17He's he's in the point scoring position two points at the present moment
00:42:21And the Jordan team are only one point behind bar in the constructors championship
00:42:26So that would leapfrog them up a place which
00:42:30Eddie Jordan would very much like he's had a very very hard time
00:42:34As you will have gathered when he was talking to Jim Rosenthal and Tony Jardine
00:42:38In the studio before the race began in that gap that holiday gap
00:42:43Between this race and the previous one in Germany as a result of having to negotiate a lacey into his car
00:42:51and
00:42:52Negotiate very firmly hides harold frentzen out of it frentzen is in 15th place
00:42:57A lacey is 12. I think I saw heidfeld just duck into the pits out of that pack
00:43:02Yes, indeed
00:43:03He has so heidfeld, uh, one of the earlier of the two stoppers panis in the pits too
00:43:08We're into the pit stop windows. No doubt about it. So there's panis. We believe there's the ferrari mechanics
00:43:14They're also getting ready who I would have thought it would be barrichello. That's in the first michael currently
00:43:20Now it's michael. Schumacher is in first. So there he is
00:43:23He's 12.8 seconds ahead last time past the start finish line james
00:43:27Well, we're looking for something like seven seconds here on this pit stop
00:43:31But interestingly guys in the last four laps schumacher has doubled his lead here
00:43:35So it's been an absolutely astonishing performance by him
00:43:38Very good indeed as he goes back out in front
00:43:41But it was a key moment there just before that stop because on lap 22
00:43:45He was seven and a half seconds out of koulthard
00:43:46He was 14 and a half before ahead of him when he came in for the stop
00:43:50And brand new tires then on the ferrari and michael rejoining
00:43:55Just in front of fourth place was who was fourth place ralph schumacher
00:44:00In fact, he stays fourth doesn't he has not leaked from michael michael being mighty relieved that he managed to get out
00:44:06Just in front of his brother. That's another key element of putting together this afternoon's race for michael schumacher
00:44:12Yeah, so it means of course that rubens barrichello leads the race now on lap 29 with david koulthard into second place
00:44:20Michael schumacher has done it. Absolutely, right here come
00:44:24trolley and
00:44:26Mikahakinen pursued now by juan pablo montoya who has gained a place as a result of nick eifeld going into
00:44:34The pits and here is jenson button and he is already a lap down
00:44:39This is his second stop jenson button has been in before in the benetton here
00:44:45He is exiting the pit lane making sure he stays inside that white line. Remember how ralph schumacher lost out
00:44:53Before yes, and jenson, of course his first stop of the afternoon was a stop and go penalty for jumping the start
00:45:00But we hear jordan are also getting ready
00:45:03So, uh, maybe truly coming in this time around and then you'll see hakkanen get the hammer down for a few laps
00:45:10And I think if hakkanen can stay out longer than truly he will surely clear the jordan up into fifth place
00:45:17Rubens barrichello leads david koulthard is second. Michael. Schumacher has stopped at his third ralph
00:45:22Schumacher is fourth has not stopped trolley is still fifth ahead of mika hakkanen. Those are the top six
00:45:28Montoya is up into seven feel nervous up into eight. John. Alici is now in ninth position from 12
00:45:36truly in the pits then so
00:45:39Hakkanen's got a bit of traffic ahead of me. We need to clear that early and then pull out some of his stunning
00:45:45laps and
00:45:46Hopefully we'll pick up truly down the pit lane. We do so fifth place man then truly in towards the jordan pit louise
00:45:53Yeah, yanu making his way into the pit like he's actually been desperate to come in for the last couple of laps
00:45:57He's been reporting that he's having problems with his tires. The team have been saying no you've got to stay out
00:46:02The only way that they're going to keep mika hakkanen behind them was by keeping truly out on the track in front of him
00:46:08Give hakkanen a couple of clear laps, which he will now have and I think we'll see him going past
00:46:13And a disastrous stop for him there 13 odd seconds. He seemed to be an age getting away. He couldn't get away
00:46:19The car was not on the ground. That was the reason the fuel hose was being laid down
00:46:25It was very strange stop there for yano. Truly couldn't see exactly what the problem was
00:46:31So here is the new race leader rubens barrichello pursued by david coulthard whose car runs a bit wide
00:46:38There and now into the pits has come ralph schumacher who was in fourth position
00:46:45Now we're going to see as streaking through on the inside goes the ferrari followed by the mclaren
00:46:50Past the jordan and it's still barrichello followed by david coulthard first and second ralph schumacher
00:46:56He's out of the pits. What's the situation with mika hakkanen? I'm looking to see him come past now
00:47:02Hakkanen's done a 121. Two is now 119. He crosses the line now
00:47:07119 but with that desperately seem desperately poor stop of truly's I think hakkanen should come out well ahead of yano
00:47:15Truly ferrari getting ready again this time around clearly that of course is for rubens barrichello
00:47:21Will mclaren come out into the pit lane? No, they do not so
00:47:25Leader barrichello in this time around that I would assume is villeneuve in there
00:47:30Yes, indeed. It is villeneuve in for his stop hakkanen montoya definitely pushing on now
00:47:36They've got a bit of clear space now truly. It's out of the way barrichello pulls up to his pit
00:47:40Let's have a look the fuel hose slow on there for barrichello. No doubt about it
00:47:45Fresh tires on michael. Schumacher crosses the line to retake the lead of the grand prix out comes
00:47:52jean
00:47:53Lacey from his pit stop, too
00:47:55So, uh lacey rejoined he was in ninth position and here comes barrichello
00:48:00Coulthard leads the grand prix. Yes, david coulthard leading barrichello into the pit
00:48:05Michael schumacher has gone through there is barrichello out
00:48:09So michael schumacher is now back in front of his number two
00:48:13In the ferrari team and david coulthard has yet to come in now
00:48:18That is this we're now on the 32nd lap
00:48:22Which is where david coulthard came in last year different car, of course of fuel capacity and the engine consumption is by no means
00:48:30Necessarily the same fastest man of anybody so far in the race through the first sector coulthard on an absolute charge a reasonable mid-sector
00:48:3831.1 seconds and attacking the entry to the corner heavily mclaren mechanics in the pit lane
00:48:45Taking the widest possible line to maximize his speed before he gets near the speed limiter zone
00:48:51Which is now take it away james
00:48:54David coulthard then coming into the pits
00:48:56This hasn't been the afternoon that he had inspected as he comes into his box nice and precise and interestingly
00:49:01He's putting a fairly used left front tire and a not so used right front tire
00:49:06He's got the engine gunning and he drops the clutch he's furious and frustrated
00:49:10But I don't think he really has an answer for the ferrari onslaught this afternoon
00:49:14He hasn't schumacher has gone through now
00:49:15There is barrichello coming towards us at the present moment as david coulthard exits the pit lane. Is he going to be ahead?
00:49:21Yes, yes david coulthard. He's ahead of rubens barrichello
00:49:26So a good pit stop for david coulthard has put him ahead and he's now sandwiched between race leader
00:49:34Michael schumacher and the man who has been in second place for most of the race batman rubens barrichello
00:49:40While all that's been going on ralph schumacher in the williams has uh with a new set of tires set a new lap record
00:49:46Of a 1 17 2 but he's out of the picture quite a long way down in fourth place
00:49:50But crucial then for coulthard
00:49:52He seemed to have a bit of a slipping clutch or something as he pulled away did not get away particularly cleanly
00:49:58But the mclaren mechanics were about one and a half seconds faster coulthard's in lap
00:50:03He was pumping in the red sectors the fastest of the race
00:50:06And that is what put him ahead of rubens barrichello montoya rejoins
00:50:11He was in sixth when he came in does he manage to stay ahead of the two saubers?
00:50:16And is david coulthard going to be able really to get the hammer down now and pull away from rubens barrichello
00:50:24And do something about michael schumacher in front of him. So it is the two top men in the world championship now
00:50:32And this race as we well know could be decided here who are in first and second places michael schumacher
00:50:38leading by a comfortable 14
00:50:41seconds with
00:50:43Rubens barrichello there in third place just about two seconds behind david coulthard and showing signs of dropping back
00:50:50And it's important to establish that whilst they've come in and taken on more fuel and new tires
00:50:56It could well be that the new tires that they've taken on give better performance than the old ones that they were on
00:51:02No doubt about that, but they're all in the same boats in that respect. I think murray
00:51:07So, uh, it seems as if coulthard is able to put some clear air quite quickly
00:51:12between himself and barrichello and can he pull
00:51:15In that 12 odd second gap that was apparent before the pit stops began
00:51:21That michael the lead that michael schumacher had coulthard then on a charge he can still win this afternoon's grand prix
00:51:28That was a crucial moment for him. Of course. They've all got one more stop yet
00:51:32So the mechanics are going to come into play
00:51:34Yeah, and it's it's looking much better for david coulthard in world championship terms than it was when he was in third place
00:51:40I remind you
00:51:42Schumacher michael has got to be three points ahead of david coulthard in this race
00:51:47On the results of this race if he's to win the championship at the present moment
00:51:52He's four points ahead with a potential 10 points for winning compared with david coulthard six points
00:51:57But this is lap 35. It is a 77 lap race rubens barrichello third
00:52:0312.6 seconds the gap then as they've now finished and the computer sorted itself out from the pit stops
00:52:0912.6 seconds from michael schumacher to david coulthard, but coulthard 1.3
00:52:15Seconds faster on the previous lap james. What can you tell us?
00:52:19Well, he's putting the hammer down and isn't it exciting and I must say I take it back about mclaren
00:52:23I said coulthard didn't have a response today ferrari
00:52:25But the mclaren boys did a sensational job in that pit stop to get him back out in front of you
00:52:29But just to show you how things can turn remember yano trulli stop that you were talking about martin
00:52:34You remember said it wasn't exactly ideal. He was fifth when he came in to make that stop
00:52:38He's now dropped down to 10th. So from schumacher's point of view
00:52:41He's got one more stop to make anything can happen in this motor race
00:52:45Particularly if coulthard is able to put pressure on him. Yeah, I agree with you
00:52:49I'm sure truly a wheel wouldn't go on or there was some kind of
00:52:53Fuel rig problem or something. It was a fuel nozzle problem. We're hearing from the f1i tv pit crew. So truly then
00:53:00His chance of points going this afternoon looking pretty slim all of a sudden. Yeah yet another fuel rig problem
00:53:07This new design of rig is not at all popular with the teams
00:53:11I know that ron dennis has made some very very vigorous representations about it to charlie whiting who is the race
00:53:19Director and it's cost several teams places this year
00:53:23Not just through the nozzle failure to go on properly but through the the rig itself
00:53:28Failing to deliver the predetermined amount of fuel that the teams have decided needed to go to their drivers cars
00:53:34Well, we'll see lap 36 now getting on towards half distance in this 77 lap race
00:53:42And you're watching race leader michael schumacher as he comes up to the benetton of giancarlo
00:53:47Fisica or is it button anyways to lap one for the second time?
00:53:51It's jenson button david coulthard then took another second out of that lead last time around down to 11.6
00:53:58And uh sixth place man now kimmy reichanan in those pit stops managed to leapfrog nick heidfeld
00:54:04So reichanan now the leading sauber driver. I felt seven montoya didn't really
00:54:10Make up as much as I thought he would he's still down there in eighth place
00:54:14Yes, the man who suffered as a result of those pit stops as james has just pointed out. Of course is yano
00:54:21Michael schumacher's retained his lead david coulthard has benefited from a better pit stop of barry keller by moving up from third to second
00:54:28Ralph schumacher is still fourth hackanan has moved up from six to eight
00:54:33And now kimmy reichanan who's past his teammate is in the points at sixth position and we are on lap 37
00:54:50So
00:55:20So
00:55:50Have you stalled can't be stalled, okay
00:56:20Foreign
00:56:50Foreign
00:56:55Lap 39 out of the 77 lap hungarian
00:56:59Grand prix michael schumacher leading
00:57:02And a major problem for the benetton
00:57:05Of jensen button as we look at david coulthard. We're in the mclaren in second position
00:57:12And look at this there is jensen button. He's come out of turn 14
00:57:17Which is the last corner on the circuit he stalled
00:57:21Spun and stalled the benetton and can't get it going again
00:57:24He's out of the car now and the car has been dragged back as into the pits comes mika hackanan from fifth position
00:57:33Now kimmy reichanan with some 28 seconds behind very very quick slick stop less than seven seconds
00:57:41That's a lap 39
00:57:43And the mclarens have stayed out much longer here
00:57:46This year than they did last year and we're on lap 39 now 77 lap race
00:57:52Schumacher leading david coulthard by 11 seconds
00:57:56Coulthard lapping marginally faster four tenths of a second
00:58:00But it's going to take a long time for four tenths of a second a lap to carve into an 11 second lead
00:58:06As you look at the much changed benetton of button being removed from the circuit
00:58:11Now surprising that jensen would spin off on the exit of a corner with traction control
00:58:15But a neat solution they've got down there. They've actually opened the wall
00:58:19They've obviously got a gate in the wall there
00:58:21So benetton out of harm's way no need or any sign of safety cars all carried out under waved yellows to tell the drivers
00:58:29Slow down, there are marshals on the racetrack extreme caution even be prepared to stop
00:58:36Uh, I don't think many of them hurtling to double yellow flag situations with stopping in mind it has to be said but there
00:58:44Obviously is the manadi of fernando alonso beached and you can see how sticky those tires are when they get heated up
00:58:52They're quite big stones that have adhered to it as he ran across the gravel track
00:58:57Interesting situation in the constructors championship now because I reported earlier on
00:59:02That if ferrari finished seven points ahead of mclaren in this race, they would take the constructors championship
00:59:10That is exactly the situation at the present moment
00:59:13With michael schumacher leading for ferrari and his teammate rubens barrichello in third place
00:59:1914 world champion points and david coulthard second and mika hakkanen in fifth place
00:59:26No, mika hakkanen's improvement and he's now gone past test in the first sector means that mclaren are just saving the situation
00:59:34By one point but with still 37 laps to go
00:59:38Anything can happen david coulthard second and he's lapping
00:59:43In virtually to the nearest hundredth of a second the same time as race leader
00:59:49Michael schumacher 11 and a half seconds behind him on the circuit
00:59:53Barrichello is third ralph schumacher still fourth for williams mika hakkanen up to fifth for mclaren both mclaren's in the points
01:00:01Both ferrari's in the points one sauber in the points reichen and who's ahead of high felt and the others in the top 10
01:00:08Are montoya pannis and trulli and louise goodman is with jenson button
01:00:13I am indeed murray jensen after the highs of hockenheim. That was really one to forget wasn't it? Uh, yeah
01:00:18Um, it wasn't the best race in the world. I had a stop go penalty not quite sure why
01:00:23But there you go
01:00:24And then uh, I was pushing really hard at the end
01:00:27That part of the race and the rear of the car just came around. We've been struggling from oversteer
01:00:32well, i've been struggling from oversteer for for most of the race and
01:00:35Just pushing a bit hard and
01:00:37The rear came around and that was it a bit of a scary place to stop. Yeah, it wasn't the best was it? Um,
01:00:44But there you go the car stalled
01:00:46In gear so I couldn't do anything about it
01:00:49Another new lap record for guess who?
01:00:52Well, you're wrong. It's mika hakkanen mika hakkanen is really traveling
01:00:57We're looking at david kulfat now and mika has just gone round in the first lap under one minute 17 seconds
01:01:04116.9 and I reckon with a bit of quick mental arithmetic that is a speed of approaching
01:01:11116 miles an hour average around this circuit and he's still 30 seconds behind ralph schumacher
01:01:19In the williams bmw and the schumacher's teammate juan pablo montoya is still in eighth position where he started
01:01:26He's still behind the two salvas of heidfeld seventh and reikanen
01:01:31In sixth place in the points again the brilliant young finn
01:01:36There's both mclaren's rejoined the racetrack and put in some sensational lap times
01:01:39And I wonder if kultar is beginning to pay the penalty for taking too much of that grip that's available early on in a stint
01:01:46Because suddenly barrichello started homing in on him and he stopped eking into
01:01:52Michael schumacher's lead and really looking a bit on the ragged edge trying to
01:01:58Maintain this pace trying to take the race to ferrari this afternoon
01:02:02Michael all of a sudden now then again with one of the fastest cars underneath him. We'll be back very shortly
01:02:32So
01:03:02So
01:03:32So
01:04:02So
01:04:21On lap 44 at the hungaro ring
01:04:2533 laps to do at the end of this one. Who is the leader? He is the leader
01:04:32No, that was rubens barrichello. It is still a michael schumacher
01:04:36Who has increased his lead over david coolthard with a lap eight tenths of a second faster than the scotsman's as you can see
01:04:44Is in traffic and schumacher now leads coolthard by over 12 seconds
01:04:48Yeah, coolthard came out of the pits like a greyhound
01:04:51But now he looks like he's paying the price for punishing those tires too early. But michael schumacher then
01:04:56Becomes the most leading grand prix driver of all time. He's led more grand prix laps
01:05:02He needed 41 of them today. He's now led
01:05:0644
01:05:07So, uh another milestone pass. Can he match?
01:05:11cross 51
01:05:12I think it's also he'll be
01:05:15Most leader in terms of distance as well as laps a little bit later on in this race
01:05:20Well, he's certainly going to be the man with the most lists or on nearly every count
01:05:25The only one that is going to be uh denied him before very much longer
01:05:30Is the incredible record of the late and very great ayrton senna for pole positions. He had
01:05:3665 of them and michael schumacher's pole position for today's hungarian grand prix was
01:05:4341 I mean that that is a quite stupefying achievement and so we're on lap 46 now
01:05:50And i've said earlier on that the ferraris are famous for their reliability the mclaren's this year
01:05:57Have been infamous for their lack of reliability for all sorts of reasons
01:06:02electronic reasons launch control reasons gearbox reasons
01:06:07Suspension reasons certainly not the sort of thing that you expect from the car and it's undoubtedly cost david kukard races
01:06:15Admittedly, he's won already this season in brazil and in austria
01:06:20But he could have done better and probably the same applies to mika hackenham
01:06:25Although he's still languishing. He's still in fifth position and showing no signs of improving any views on hackenham
01:06:34retiring
01:06:35I've no idea
01:06:37No more than anybody else you have to read something into the fact that mccarran haven't announced their drivers
01:06:42For next year at this time clearly, I know a bit about one side of the mclaren garage. I know nothing about the other side
01:06:50And there's no smoke without fire and it something must be going on. I think we'll have to wait
