00:00:00Good drive for the Arrows, man. Fisichella is 7th, Barrichello is rejoined in 8th place after the incident with this man, Kimi Räikkönen.
00:00:07So then it's Heidfeld, Panis 10th, De La Rosa in 11th, Irvine in 12th, and Nicosalo 13th, ahead of Mark Webber.
00:00:15And still we've only seen 3 actual retirements from this race, Alex Young, Takuma Sato, and Alan McNish.
00:00:23And that was Montoya. Montoya went through the chicane. He didn't go around the chicane, he drove through that.
00:00:29So Montoya made an error under braking into the chicane, now whether that will be deemed to be an advantage or not.
00:00:35So he didn't make up any places, he didn't really gain any time as we watch back, this is Irvine.
00:00:39Oh, Eddie Irvine losing it, tank slapping it all the way down.
00:00:44And that was Nicosalo taking advantage. Now was there contact here, John? No.
00:00:47No, no contact. It looks like the traction control suddenly was non-existent.
00:00:53Oh, and this is still close between the two battling for 2nd place.
00:00:58Montoya just fending off Michael Schumacher, as Rubens Barrichello makes his way through the pits and has had a stop-and-go penalty.
00:01:07Yes, that means coming into the pits, stopping for 10 seconds, standing there then.
00:01:12And this is down to the individual teams, they have to actually carry out this exercise.
00:01:16And then when the 10 seconds is up, the driver can go back out into the field.
00:01:19Barrichello had been very quick, immediately going back out after his contact with Kimi Räikkönen.
00:01:24But of course, once again, coming back in will have lasted about 30 seconds for Inunait.
00:01:28Plus 10 seconds, so a total of 40 seconds for Barrichello for that rash move.
00:01:33There is Montoya, misjudging the braking. There he went straight across the chicane.
00:01:38Whether that will be deemed an unfair advantage, I have to say, doesn't look like it to me.
00:01:42No, and he almost hit the barrier under the braking there. The car was very unstable indeed.
00:01:46But he saved it, and he stays in front of Michael Schumacher.
00:01:50Now we've just seen Jarno Trulli come into the pits.
00:01:52So the Renault driver drops down the order somewhat. He's made a stop, he was running in 5th place.
00:01:57That promotes Heinz-Harald Frentzen up into 5th.
00:02:00Ferrari are ready for Michael Schumacher. Michael Schumacher is going to be in.
00:02:06Oh my goodness, gone wrong for Ruiz Barrichello. He's been done for speeding in the pit lane.
00:02:10But this is Michael Schumacher's one and only stop for the day.
00:02:13They decided to bring him in now. It's a lap, he came in lap 44.
00:02:18Now he had all the airboxes.
00:02:20Tire change, and off goes Michael Schumacher once again.
00:02:23Ross Braun speaking to him on the radio.
00:02:25Indeed, and this is the major play of the race.
00:02:27The Ferrari are going to take victory, or at least get up onto 2nd place in the podium.
00:02:31It's going to start now.
00:02:33Michael Schumacher is going to rejoin the track, and really there's not too much traffic ahead of him.
00:02:38So he's going to be able to get in 2 or 3 really quick laps.
00:02:41One of the arrows just comes by, and Michael just manages to get ahead of Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:02:45Frentzen, of course, running in 5th place. Michael Schumacher rejoins in 4th.
00:02:50So that's great stuff for Michael Schumacher to get out in front of Frentzen.
00:02:54That could be absolutely crucial.
00:02:56Now, if he can string a series of fast laps together,
00:02:59it may well be that he can move up into at least 2nd past Montoya.
00:03:03But it looks like Coulthard could be coming into the pit soon.
00:03:05It is. David Coulthard is going to come in. This is going to be a lap 45.
00:03:10So we hope that McLaren are ready for him.
00:03:14So we'll wait and see what this team do.
00:03:17So David Coulthard cuts. No, he doesn't. He goes on one more lap.
00:03:20We saw the McLaren team preparing. It's for Kimi Räikkönen back in again.
00:03:24Yeah, it's Räikkönen who's come back in.
00:03:25So obviously, even though repairs have been made, the car is not right.
00:03:29And he's saying, no, don't take the steering wheel off.
00:03:31I think maybe we can still get back out there. Maybe it's only a minor problem.
00:03:36But I think that McLaren want to get this car moved out of the way as quickly as possible
00:03:39because we are going to come into the window.
00:03:41But David Coulthard and his team will be looking to make that pit stop.
00:03:45There we see Montoya now in 2nd place.
00:03:47Ralf Schumacher in 3rd. Michael will be pushing.
00:03:50He's just gone fastest in that 2nd sector of the lap.
00:03:54New tyres, fuel on board.
00:03:55A chat to Ross Braun as he went out of the pit lane.
00:03:58As Rubens Barrichello once again visits the pits.
00:04:00I think this is the 3rd time he's seen the Brazilian this afternoon into the pits.
00:04:04Yes, he picked up the penalty for speeding in the pit lane last time around.
00:04:07So he's had to drive through it again on the speed limit of 60kmh,
00:04:11just over 40mph, which he exceeded last time.
00:04:15So, Michael Schumacher, this is his opportunity now.
00:04:19The laps that he's putting together now could be the difference
00:04:22between him matching Hayet and Senna's 6 victories here at Monaco.
00:04:26Because if he can put in enough quick laps,
00:04:28he could move ahead not only of Montoya, but of Coulthard as well, quite possibly.
00:04:33Because he wasn't that far behind the McLaren Mercedes driver.
00:04:36But these two are going deeper into the race,
00:04:38so they might need to stop for a little less long when it comes to their turn.
00:04:42But Ralf Schumacher quicker at this moment than Juan Pablo Montoya.
00:04:46As we look back into the pit lane and see which teams are beginning to prepare.
00:04:50Now we look at the Williams team, running 2nd and 3rd, virtually nose to tail.
00:04:54But Ralf Schumacher the quicker of the two Williams drivers at this moment.
00:04:59A little puff of smoke.
00:05:00Trying to get to Montoya is in trouble.
00:05:02I saw a little puff of smoke as he came a lot across the line.
00:05:05And Montoya is in trouble.
00:05:06And it's Ralf Schumacher who's moved ahead.
00:05:09Puts him into 2nd.
00:05:13Patrick Head discussing things with the team.
00:05:16And, oh, what can you believe?
00:05:18Ben, I just wonder, is this a problem?
00:05:21Or did Montoya lift off to let Ralf Schumacher go through?
00:05:24Because suddenly the car... Oh, and again a problem.
00:05:26You can see it just coming into the Mirabaud.
00:05:28Suddenly the car just turned sharp left when it should have been going right.
00:05:31Let's take a look.
00:05:32Here's the replay, Don, as he came down past the start-finish line.
00:05:35Now, was there a puff of smoke? I thought I saw a little haze.
00:05:38There was a little haze. There was a blue haze.
00:05:40But that problem recurred into the Mirabaud corner.
00:05:43We just cut away from that to see the replay of that initial incident.
00:05:46There is Montoya going slowly and he's in trouble and out of the race.
00:05:49Listen to that. It sounds horrible.
00:05:51Down the hill.
00:05:53And I tell you what, we've had great reliability from the BMW engine this year.
00:05:57But not this time.
00:05:58Stay offline. Stay offline.
00:06:00He's got to get offline.
00:06:01If that engine is about to erupt and put oil down, water down on the racetrack.
00:06:05We've seen what happened to Eddie Irvine on Thursday.
00:06:08And I tell you what, we've had great reliability from the BMW engine this year.
00:06:12But not this time.
00:06:13Stay offline. Stay offline.
00:06:14He's got to get offline.
00:06:16If that engine is about to erupt and put oil down, water down on the racetrack.
00:06:20We've seen what happened to Eddie Irvine on Thursday in practice
00:06:23when he got caught on the oil from Bernoldi's engine.
00:06:26So, Antonio Montoya, just pull it off. Pull it off.
00:06:29Take that car out of the race, Pablo.
00:06:31Yeah, and cars coming around to pass him.
00:06:33And that's a nasty situation for the others.
00:06:36I think that's pretty much the first BMW we've seen let go.
00:06:39Ralph did at the end of the Barcelona, the Spanish Grand Prix.
00:06:42But that was right on the last lap.
00:06:44Montoya's had reliability all year long.
00:06:46But it's gone wrong for him here in Monaco.
00:06:48And he had a great chance.
00:06:50There we see once again as he comes out of the tunnel.
00:06:52You could almost hear it, let alone see it.
00:06:55So, Michael Schumacher up to third place having made his one stop.
00:06:58He is some 31 seconds behind David Coulthard.
00:07:01Coulthard yet to make his pit stop.
00:07:03So, should Coulthard decide to come in at this point,
00:07:06he has got 31.8 seconds to get himself refueled, retired,
00:07:10and back out before Michael Schumacher will come past the pit lane exit.
00:07:15So, it's down to this man, David Coulthard.
00:07:18Now, he's not going to have any help from Montoya.
00:07:21Ralph Schumacher still running competitively.
00:07:23But there's quite a gap between David Coulthard and there, Ralph Schumacher.
00:07:27You can see a huge distance.
00:07:29And I'm sure that Michael will be well ahead of him
00:07:32after Ralph has made his pit stop.
00:07:34It's all the question of how quickly Coulthard can go
00:07:37and how short a stop he can make.
00:07:39If he's going very deep into this race,
00:07:41it will be a short stop.
00:07:44And hopefully, he might be able to still challenge Michael Schumacher
00:07:47when he comes back out.
00:07:50Wave yellow flags just on at the Rascasse.
00:07:52That was to get Montoya's car pushed to safety.
00:07:55Ralph Schumacher lost a momentary second or two because of that.
00:07:59But some 15.7 seconds was 14.1
00:08:04to this man, David Coulthard, who's now comfortably in the lead
00:08:07and has got a lot more options.
00:08:09But his concern will be the gap, not to Ralph Schumacher,
00:08:12but the gap to Michael Schumacher, who is now 31.8 seconds behind.
00:08:16Coulthard must push in these laps now before he makes his stop.
00:08:21Of course, the deeper he goes into the race,
00:08:23the less fuel he will have to take on board,
00:08:25the less time he will stand in the pits.
00:08:27And therefore, that will assist him in that quest to take victory here this year.
00:08:32He's still lapping faster than Michael Schumacher at this point, John.
00:08:35And that's the key thing.
00:08:36He's still managing to go quicker than the Ferrari.
00:08:39And you know, last year, Coulthard was the last to make a pit stop.
00:08:42It was as far as lap number 65 out of 78.
00:08:46Now, he was going not quite as quick as he has been this time
00:08:49because he got held up a lot.
00:08:52But it showed you what McLaren's tactics were.
00:08:54It took him some 26 seconds.
00:08:56He lost about 26 seconds on his stop.
00:08:58At the moment, he's 32 seconds ahead of Michael.
00:09:00If he can sustain this pace, he should come out back in front.
00:09:03On board with Mika Salo, having an attack of panic here,
00:09:07trying to go past the Frenchman.
00:09:08The Frenchman forced to go across the chicane.
00:09:10Again, I think that's a case of force majeure,
00:09:13but it depends on...
00:09:14Oh, and there Montoya's car, just checking that.
00:09:16I mean, they didn't need to do that.
00:09:17They just dumped all that extinguishing powder on the car.
00:09:20And I'm sure that the BMW and them,
00:09:22that's just unnecessary, I think.
00:09:25So, looking back over the rear wing of Mika Salo,
00:09:29and that now he is...
00:09:31In fact, he is past Pannis.
00:09:33So, you don't quite know if Pannis just backed off a bit there.
00:09:36Well, I think that maybe Pannis felt that he was overtaken fairly and squarely,
00:09:39and maybe even the team had instructed him to let Mika Salo go.
00:09:44So, Heinz-Hauer, Frenchman, that took two stops,
00:09:46still in sixth place, but one lap down.
00:09:48There we see it again.
00:09:49Really nowhere for Salo to go.
00:09:50He couldn't get around.
00:09:51It would almost mean coming to a standstill, then picking up.
00:09:54So, he did the right thing and let Mika Salo go.
00:09:58Now in seventh place, some 29 seconds behind Heinz-Hauer,
00:10:02Frenchman in that final point position, number six.
00:10:07The positions at the end of 49 laps call far the leader from Ralf Schumacher.
00:10:11And Ralf looks to be coming in this time around.
00:10:14Michael Schumacher is still third,
00:10:16Fisichella fourth, Trulli fifth, and Fretzen sixth.
00:10:19But Michael Schumacher, a new lap record,
00:10:22won 19.002, and that gap is going to close down very quickly.
00:10:26David Coulthard and McLaren have got to be careful.
00:10:29They can't allow him to stay out too long,
00:10:31otherwise his advantage will be lost when he does come in.
00:10:35Ralf Schumacher, the tyres looking very worn,
00:10:37so it's time for him to come into the pits now and make his sole stop.
00:10:41It's lap number 50, 28 laps to go,
00:10:44and this should be a clean stop, hopefully.
00:10:46All four tyres are changed, the fuel goes on board
00:10:49at a rate of nearly three gallons per second.
00:10:53And he looks as though he's saying,
00:10:54this car is all over the place.
00:10:56Yeah, you can see his hand movements,
00:10:57he's looking for somebody to get their attention,
00:10:59to tell him his problems.
00:11:00But he's got a radio, he can talk to the team,
00:11:02but maybe he wanted a change, a mechanical change to the car.
00:11:07Well, it looks as though McLaren now are getting ready
00:11:09to get David Coulthard reserviced here.
00:11:12Look at this, Ralf Schumacher joining right back in
00:11:15in the front of that battle with Olivier Panis and Felipe Massa.
00:11:19And the team did a very good job in calculating
00:11:21just where he would blend back into the field.
00:11:23If he had got caught in that battle,
00:11:25then there would have been curtains.
00:11:26But the real battle really is not between Ralf Schumacher,
00:11:29it's Michael Schumacher taking 1.6 seconds out of David Coulthard's lap.
00:11:33That was lap 50, they've got to bring Coulthard in.
00:11:36The team are ready for him.
00:11:37Is he going to dive in? Yes, Coulthard's into the pits.
00:11:40And watch what he'll do.
00:11:41Tyres will go on board, fuel load should be fairly short.
00:11:44We saw 8.5 seconds from Michael Schumacher.
00:11:46They will want to be either less.
00:11:48Schumacher comes round to back.
00:11:49So, this is the crucial battle.
00:11:51This could be the decisive moment of the race.
00:11:53It's a quick fuel stop.
00:11:546.9 seconds, great stop from the McLaren crew.
00:11:57Is it enough? It should be.
00:11:5940 miles an hour is all he's allowed to do down this pit lane.
00:12:02But he's well ahead.
00:12:03He's well in front of Michael Schumacher, surely.
00:12:06Schumacher coming through.
00:12:07Rascasse are out now.
00:12:09But it's okay.
00:12:10Coulthard gets out in front.
00:12:12And McLaren Mercedes have done the job.
00:12:14They've got him out in front of Ferrari.
00:12:16Now he's got to stay there for the remaining 27 laps.
00:12:18And there you can see Schumacher.
00:12:19He's, what, 3 seconds behind.
00:12:21As he looks, he glares at the back of that McLaren.
00:12:23He's been glaring at the back of Montoya's Williams All Race.
00:12:26Now he's got a moment of breath.
00:12:28Now it's going to be David Coulthard.
00:12:30Michael Schumacher, 18.652.
00:12:33Another new lap record.
00:12:34Michael Schumacher is just absolutely stunning now that he's got clear air.
00:12:40So, the battle rejoined.
00:12:42These two have both made their only pit stops in this race.
00:12:46And we now look back from David Coulthard's car at the four times world champion.
00:12:51Now Coulthard has to survive the next 27 laps.
00:12:54It seems as though McLaren sorted out the problem with the smoke earlier on.
00:12:58But surely reliability will be a concern
00:13:01as he sees the man who's already taken five wins around this track right behind him.
00:13:07But this is a real battle for the lead in previous races.
00:13:10Michael, with this new Ferrari, has just been pretty much dominant.
00:13:13In spite of being waived the victory in Austria,
00:13:16this car never really challenged.
00:13:18But it's all about qualifying.
00:13:20If you can't get on the front row of the grid,
00:13:21you really inhibit your opportunities to win a race.
00:13:24But now Michael Schumacher, second for the first time this afternoon.
00:13:28Now the pit stops have worked their way through.
00:13:30Putting pressure on David Coulthard.
00:13:32Coulthard on fresh tyres.
00:13:33New fuel on board.
00:13:35It is the battle between Coulthard and Schumacher.
00:13:37A battle between Michelin and Bridgestone.
00:13:38Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari.
00:13:40Yes, Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari.
00:13:42John, who has shared the last five victories here at Monaco.
00:13:45And it looks as though he's going to go to one or other of these two teams once again.
00:13:49Now, let's see what's going on further down.
00:13:51There is Giancarlo Fisichella running in fourth place.
00:13:54And he now comes into the pits.
00:13:56He hasn't stopped yet.
00:13:57So this is his routine stop.
00:13:59So the sole Jordan in the Grand Prix.
00:14:01Giancarlo Fisichella got up to fourth place.
00:14:04Stops on lap 52.
00:14:07Now the Jordan team.
00:14:08Oh, look at that.
00:14:09Oh, there's big contact.
00:14:10Yes, Pannis and Button, I think.
00:14:12It's Jenson Button who has collided.
00:14:15Well, we have to wait and see.
00:14:16Yellow flags obviously down there.
00:14:17Pannis and Jenson Button.
00:14:19We'll get a view of that in a moment as well.
00:14:21But we'll just see again.
00:14:22Safety car being prepared.
00:14:24Because these two cars will take a moment to be removed.
00:14:26Button's car in particular.
00:14:27In a particularly precarious part of the racetrack.
00:14:30Drivers must be aware.
00:14:32Let's look again.
00:14:33Button dives down the inside.
00:14:34Can't get alongside Pannis.
00:14:36He gets in the wrong place.
00:14:37There's nowhere to go.
00:14:38Just, well, overambitious in my view.
00:14:41There you see the contact.
00:14:42And then, well, Jenson had a pop.
00:14:45And Olivier Pannis was sufficiently far forward.
00:14:47He had no option.
00:14:48He couldn't do very much more than he was doing.
00:14:50Another look from onboard camera.
00:14:52And as he turned into the corner,
00:14:54there was Button arriving on the inside.
00:14:56Yes, and it goes into a bottleneck
00:14:58as you turn into this Saint-Dubois corner.
00:15:00Now we've got three cars.
00:15:01Renault, Toyota and BAR.
00:15:05But the cranes, as ever,
00:15:07doing a fine job of moving the cars
00:15:08very quickly out of the way
00:15:10and clearing that zone
00:15:12so that racing can continue.
00:15:13They've still got to get Pannis' car out of the way.
00:15:15But it's not as much on the line
00:15:17as Button's car was.
00:15:19And the two of them just having a little chat about that
00:15:21after the incident.
00:15:23Neither of them look to be getting
00:15:25in a point-scoring position this afternoon.
00:15:27But nonetheless, you never know what can happen here.
00:15:29With a few more retirements,
00:15:30they might have been battling over
00:15:32a position in the top six.
00:15:33And the marshals, ever efficient here in Monte Carlo,
00:15:35just putting little trolley jacks under that BAR
00:15:38to pull it away to another area of safety,
00:15:41the original place,
00:15:42which has got two cars in it now.
00:15:44Well, there's no more room,
00:15:45so anybody else who's off at Saint-Dubois,
00:15:47that car will be, as we see here,
00:15:49the jack under the rear of the BAR,
00:15:51to take it to safety in that run-off area.
00:15:54So, let's just see how things have settled down.
00:15:56Pit stops mostly have been made now.
00:15:59It's Coulthard from Michael Schumacher.
00:16:00Ralf Schumacher's a further 18 seconds behind these two.
00:16:03Then Jarno Trulli has now moved back into fourth position
00:16:06after Fisichella made his pit stop.
00:16:08So we've got the Renault of Trulli in fourth.
00:16:10Then it's Fisichella fifth.
00:16:11Hightower of Frentzen in the Arrows in sixth.
00:16:13Mikasalo, a lap down, but he's in seventh in the Toyota.
00:16:16Barrichello, a lap down, in eighth place.
00:16:18Mark Webber is ninth.
00:16:19Nick Heidfeld, currently in tenth place,
00:16:22ahead of Eddie Irvine.
00:16:23De La Rosa is in twelfth.
00:16:25Then it's Bernaldi.
00:16:26And, of course, we've now lost Panis Button as well.
00:16:29So Felipe Massa is our last runner in 14th.
00:16:33Giancarlo Fisichella just rides the kerb
00:16:35as he comes out of the 48 corner,
00:16:37through the kerb.
00:16:38That's where his teammate Sato,
00:16:39who was trying to make room for Fisichella
00:16:42on the lap that he went off,
00:16:43got it all wrong.
00:16:44Fisichella scored points for the first time
00:16:47for Jordan and himself in Austria,
00:16:49in fifth place, running now in fifth place.
00:16:51Hightower of Frentzen some 7.1 seconds behind.
00:16:54And, well, we need to see Fisichella had a slow lap.
00:16:57That was because of the incident at Saint-Denis.
00:16:59We wait to see what the lap time is
00:17:01for the Jordan driver,
00:17:02vis-à-vis that for the Arrows.
00:17:08Speed's in the power
00:17:09through the last couple of right-handers
00:17:11that lead around to complete his 54th lap.
00:17:15Gullfard some way further down the road,
00:17:18some 62 seconds ahead, in fact,
00:17:21of the Jordan there.
00:17:22But Fisichella putting in a quick lap
00:17:25and Trulli definitely in trouble
00:17:27because Fisichella's lap then,
00:17:29three seconds faster than Jarno Trulli.
00:17:31And that's because Jarno Trulli
00:17:32must have some sort of mechanical problem.
00:17:34He is definitely struggling.
00:17:36The gap is still 19 seconds between the two of them,
00:17:39but it's closing.
00:17:41Well, back to the front
00:17:42as Michael Schumacher continues to hire David Gullfard.
00:17:46Again, that same situation
00:17:47that Michael Schumacher faced behind Montoya.
00:17:49He can get so close,
00:17:51but then the problem is,
00:17:52what is he going to do to make up the gap,
00:17:54but principally to get momentum
00:17:55to carry him past David Gullfard.
00:17:57And right now,
00:17:58it's going to be once again down to traffic
00:18:00or down to a driving error,
00:18:02or worse for Gullfard,
00:18:03some mechanical problems.
00:18:05Good first sector there from David Gullfard,
00:18:07but Michael Schumacher keeps the pressure on him.
00:18:10And again, Michael looks to be on a very quick lap,
00:18:13not perhaps his fastest overall.
00:18:15He set that on lap number 51,
00:18:17just a few laps ago.
00:18:20And Michael keeping the pressure on Gullfard.
00:18:22That's all he can do in this situation.
00:18:25These two drivers have won the last two races here.
00:18:29The last three races, in fact, here at Monaco.
00:18:31Last year, it was Schumacher the year before Gullfard
00:18:34and Michael Schumacher the year before that.
00:18:36And it's going to go to one or other of them,
00:18:38surely today,
00:18:39unless both of them run into some sort of mechanical problem.
00:18:42Just looking at those live SuperSlowMo pictures,
00:18:44not an awful lot to pick and choose between
00:18:46the merits of the two cars
00:18:48through that swing-pull complex.
00:18:52Adrian Newey, Technical Director at McLaren,
00:18:55and Ron Dennis.
00:18:56Can they keep it together?
00:18:57You know, it's been a while,
00:18:59just over a year,
00:19:00since David Gullfard had a victory.
00:19:03That was in Austria.
00:19:04And since then, it's been a bleak period for him.
00:19:07It's been bleak times in 2002, generally,
00:19:10for McLaren and Mercedes.
00:19:11They have not looked even close to winning a Grand Prix this year.
00:19:15This is their very real first opportunity.
00:19:18Now, keep an eye on this man,
00:19:19because he is not lapping very quickly.
00:19:21Jarno Trulli, well, actually,
00:19:23the last time, he picked up the pace a little bit.
00:19:25I suspect it's happening.
00:19:26Trulli has probably just met traffic on a lap,
00:19:28where really, he just couldn't get past,
00:19:30or they weren't aware of him behind him.
00:19:32So, Jarno Trulli running much nearer to his normal race pace.
00:19:35He's running behind Nick Heidfeld in the Sabre,
00:19:37but, of course, Heidfeld only running in 10th place,
00:19:39and there's a lap down.
00:19:40So, this is Jarno Trulli trying to put a lap on
00:19:43the young German driver in the Sabre.
00:19:45Sabre having a very, very disappointing Grand Prix
00:19:48here in Monte Carlo this year.
00:19:49Yes, it doesn't seem to be coming together for them at all
00:19:52this time around.
00:19:53Look at how close the leaders are.
00:19:54This is Michael Schumacher right behind Gullfard.
00:19:57And who's Gullfard behind?
00:19:58He's behind Enrique Bernoldi.
00:20:00But this time, it's the race leader coming up to lap Bernoldi.
00:20:03Bernoldi has been given the blue flag.
00:20:05There are blue warning lights in the cockpit.
00:20:07He will move over and let these two race leaders
00:20:09go through on this pit straight.
00:20:11Let's hope that he does.
00:20:12Yes, he does.
00:20:13He moves well over to the left-hand side.
00:20:15Bernoldi, who held up Gullfard for many laps last year,
00:20:18but in that case, it was a battle for position,
00:20:21and he was fully justified in doing that.
00:20:23Now that Gullfard is race leader,
00:20:25he does a fine job of moving cleanly offline
00:20:28and letting the two leaders through.
00:20:30And still, Michael Schumacher applies the pressure.
00:20:32You can see coming into the casino
00:20:34that Michael Schumacher able to close up
00:20:36to the rear of David Gullfard.
00:20:38Clearly, the Ferrari with the Bridgestone
00:20:40is the quicker of the two cars.
00:20:42But David Gullfard has still got that tape in his memory.
00:20:44He doesn't know or care where Michael Schumacher is
00:20:47as long as he's behind him.
00:20:51The view from the camera mounted
00:20:53just beside Michael Schumacher's helmet there.
00:20:56The focus, the concentration.
00:20:59And John, you know, how does this feel for David Gullfard?
00:21:02He's been in a winning position many times,
00:21:04but if there's one man you probably don't want
00:21:06breathing down your neck, it's Michael Schumacher.
00:21:09This is true, but David Gullfard's raced with
00:21:11Michael Schumacher on many occasions.
00:21:13They've gone eyeball to eyeball,
00:21:15and David Gullfard's one of the few drivers
00:21:17who's been able to overtake Michael Schumacher on mirror.
00:21:23So now let's just watch Michael as he comes through
00:21:26up past the pits once more.
00:21:29That is lap number 58 that is about to be completed.
00:21:33Gullfard crosses the line, a 1 minute 19.9 for him,
00:21:36a 1 minute 20.1 for this man, Michael Schumacher.
00:21:39The gap remaining at just under a second between them.
00:21:42We've just heard from Juan Pablo Montoya
00:21:44about what happened to him in the race,
00:21:46but also principally about the start.
00:21:48Why did he lose the lead?
00:21:49And he's been none too complimentary about the software
00:21:52on the launch control mechanism on his Williams BMW.
00:21:55Now he's obviously very upset about the day.
00:21:57He thought he could have a win here.
00:21:59He lost the lead at the start,
00:22:00and then it ended up with a major engine failure.
00:22:04Third place for this man, Ralf Schumacher,
00:22:06the sole remaining Williams BMW in the race.
00:22:09Some 22 seconds behind Michael Schumacher.
00:22:13So there's a big, big gap between the top two
00:22:15and this car in third, but he has a lonely time
00:22:18because it's a long gap behind him to Jarno Trulli,
00:22:21some 25 seconds.
00:22:22So Ralf just has to maintain focus.
00:22:24Maintain concentration.
00:22:26He hasn't always done that at Monaco in the past,
00:22:28and let's hope that he can reel off
00:22:30these final 20 laps safely and securely.
00:22:32Well, Ralf is already calculating.
00:22:34If he finishes in fourth, third place,
00:22:36he'll get four points.
00:22:37That'll give him 27 points,
00:22:38equal with his teammate, Juan Pablo Montoya.
00:22:41He's driving for third place.
00:22:42He's not driving for second or for victory,
00:22:44and he's got no pressure behind him
00:22:46from Jarno Trulli in the Renault Sioux.
00:22:48Ralf's already worked it out.
00:22:49The team have probably worked it out,
00:22:50saying, just finish the race, get on the podium.
00:22:53You'll get your four points.
00:22:54We'll get our four points,
00:22:55and that will give us 54 in the Manufacturers' Championship,
00:22:58still well ahead of McLaren in third place.
00:23:01Ten points available for the win,
00:23:03and David Coulthard would love to take those ten points.
00:23:05He's only scored ten points
00:23:07in all six of the first Grand Prix of 2002,
00:23:11so he could double his score here today
00:23:13if he stays where he is.
00:23:14Michael Schumacher, of course, clear points leader.
00:23:1754 points he's scored out of the six races.
00:23:21Well, not quite a maximum, but very near to it.
00:23:2460 points is the maximum he could have achieved,
00:23:26and he's scored 54 of them.
00:23:28Well, there's body language, I think, that says,
00:23:30I'm sorry, it was my error.
00:23:31I tried something.
00:23:32I couldn't get it alongside early enough,
00:23:34and then, of course, they came to this very narrow funnel
00:23:36or bottleneck, as you go into Saint-Denis
00:23:39and put Olivier Pannus
00:23:41and then Button as well into a compromising position,
00:23:44which ended up with both of them
00:23:45out of the race in the crash barriers.
00:23:48Looking down the field,
00:23:49it's the Ferraris that are providing the entertainment
00:23:52at the moment.
00:23:53It's Michael Schumacher, hounding race leader,
00:23:55David Coulthard,
00:23:56and the other one is Barrichello,
00:23:57who's right behind Mika Salo
00:23:59in the battle for seventh place.
00:24:01Same sort of gap between the two of them.
00:24:03We now ride with Eddie Irvine,
00:24:05who's scored points last two races here at Monaco,
00:24:08driving for the Jaguar team,
00:24:10but today, it's been a matter of survival.
00:24:12He runs in 11th.
00:24:14Yes, Eddie running in the 1 minute 21 second barrier,
00:24:16but, I mean, that's the best you can expect
00:24:18from the Jaguar.
00:24:19His teammate, Pedro de la Rosa,
00:24:20running directly behind him in 12th,
00:24:22and both Jaguar drivers doing the best they can
00:24:24with a car, really,
00:24:25which is falling so far behind,
00:24:27even outqualified by the Minardi of Mark Webber
00:24:31for 19th place in the grid.
00:24:32The Jaguar is 20th and 21st,
00:24:34and, really, I can't wait for the British Grand Prix
00:24:36to come along.
00:24:37That's when they expect to make this quantum leap
00:24:39on their aerodynamic.
00:24:42Lifting into a little bit of team radio.
00:24:48That's Irvine. We change to another view.
00:24:50Now, looking over his left shoulder,
00:24:52the Tiger design on the crash helmet,
00:24:55and this is the latter part of the lap,
00:24:57coming past the Rascast restaurants
00:24:58on his right-hand side.
00:24:59It's a cousin of the Tiger.
00:25:00It is actually a Jaguar.
00:25:01Jaguar, yes, sorry.
00:25:02The Jaguar on his helmet, rather than the Tiger.
00:25:05But, Goulthard comes through.
00:25:07Schumacher in second place.
00:25:08The gap has stayed at a second between them,
00:25:11and Ralf Schumacher still in third place.
00:25:14So, this battle for the lead, for victory here
00:25:17in Monte Carlo.
00:25:18One that David Goulthard would love to repeat.
00:25:20One that Michael Schumacher, of course,
00:25:22is very familiar with.
00:25:23And if he went on to take victory,
00:25:24it would match that of the late great
00:25:26Ayrton Senna there.
00:25:27Slight opening of the visor.
00:25:29David Goulthard is just letting some air circulate.
00:25:32Hard work, and David has really driven hard all weekend.
00:25:35And, of course, now that he's, once again,
00:25:37in the lead, having made that pit stop.
00:25:39Great job by the McLaren team to get him in and out.
00:25:41And just getting some air, whatever air he can in,
00:25:44just to keep that composure.
00:25:46Just looking at the timing screens as well,
00:25:49at the same time.
00:25:50Enrique Bernaldi, down in 13th place,
00:25:52has just set the fastest mid-sector of anybody,
00:25:55any car, on the lap just now.
00:25:57He's running down in 13th place in the arrows,
00:25:59but he's still going pretty quickly.
00:26:01We're riding with Goulthard.
00:26:03Concentrating, focusing on not making any tiny mistake
00:26:07with the barriers, lightly.
00:26:09Every part of this track.
00:26:11But Goulthard seems to love the place.
00:26:13And he's making the most of his opportunity
00:26:15to run ahead of the four-times world champion.
00:26:18There's been a little bit of a change,
00:26:19just outside the top six.
00:26:21Rubens Barrichello, 9th and 7th,
00:26:22because Mikasalo, we saw him very briefly,
00:26:24had to dive into the pits,
00:26:25whether it was strategy, whether it was planned.
00:26:27The fact is that Naisalo's dropped down to 8th.
00:26:29Barrichello has got clear air to Hinds,
00:26:31Harold Fenson in 6th place.
00:26:33Some 20 seconds behind, with some 17 seconds to go.
00:26:37Michael Schumacher is not going to lessen the pressure.
00:26:40In the remaining 16 laps it is now,
00:26:43as they cross the line one more time.
00:26:45He is going to keep this pressure on Goulthard throughout.
00:26:49And there you can see, just ahead of them,
00:26:51Hinds, Harold Fenson, running in 6th place,
00:26:53looking to try and score another point for the arrows team.
00:26:56He managed it two Grands Prix ago,
00:26:58but he's not going to be able to do it this time.
00:27:00He's going to have to try and do it again.
00:27:02He's going to have to try and score another point for the arrows team.
00:27:05He managed it two Grands Prix ago,
00:27:07and he wants to do the same this time around.
00:27:09They look strong in Austria.
00:27:11Unfortunately, the two teammates had a bit of a coming together,
00:27:14which didn't help.
00:27:15Now, look on board once again.
00:27:17See how close Michael Schumacher gets to the back of a McLaren.
00:27:25Back down the hill.
00:27:26Won't be long.
00:27:27They should catch Fenson, I should think,
00:27:29soon after the chicane.
00:27:31To make sure that Fenson won't move out of the way.
00:27:33That little blue square on your screen
00:27:35is an indication that the blue flags are being waived.
00:27:37For Hinds, Harold Fenson.
00:27:39There he goes through the chicane.
00:27:41Just waits until the lead cars go through that.
00:27:43He'll not be penalized for that.
00:27:44That was smart, intelligent driving from the German driver in the arrows.
00:27:47Just puts himself in a safe situation.
00:27:50Michael Schumacher so fast into that swimming pool complex.
00:27:54Fenson has a full 20 seconds advantage over the next runner on track.
00:27:58That is the other Ferrari of Rubens Barrichello,
00:28:01who's now ahead of Salo.
00:28:02And that's because Salo's just been into the pits once again.
00:28:05So Barrichello has gained one position.
00:28:08But let's see what times they do as they come across.
00:28:101.19.7 last time.
00:28:121.19.6 from Coulthard.
00:28:14And a 1.19.7 from Michael Schumacher.
00:28:17These two are lapping consistently quickly.
00:28:20But Coulthard, at the moment, has it under control.
00:28:23And all the pressure that Michael Schumacher can inflict upon David Coulthard,
00:28:27as you look at Mario Illen,
00:28:29the man who is responsible for these Mercedes-Benz V10 engines.
00:28:33The company's come under some criticism
00:28:35for not having an engine performance to match that of BMW and Ferrari in particular.
00:28:40There are people saying it's not entirely an engine fault,
00:28:42but the difficulty for anybody is that if you're behind the eight ball,
00:28:46it takes time to recover.
00:28:48But this circuit isn't quite so engine advantageous
00:28:51as, let's say, Austria before, or even the next Grand Prix, of course,
00:28:54when we go to North America for the Canadian Grand Prix.
00:28:59Time penalty for car number 21 for gaining an advantage,
00:29:03and that was Bernoldi.
00:29:05And it may well have been that that middle sector time
00:29:07was in fact when he went through the chicane, John.
00:29:10Perhaps that's why we saw Bernoldi suddenly flash up
00:29:13with the fastest time through the mid-sector of the lap.
00:29:15Yes, and if you gain an advantage, then you will be penalised.
00:29:18It may be something as simple as just a simple drive-through penalty,
00:29:22or if it was more severe, then you'd be brought in and stopped for 10 seconds.
00:29:26And very strict control these days on the running of a Grand Prix.
00:29:31And if the cameras all run the circuit,
00:29:33and the opportunity to replay a video and see precisely what did take place,
00:29:37and of course the timing as well,
00:29:39then a driver, if he does infringe regulations,
00:29:41will find penalties awaiting him very shortly.
00:29:45100 Grand Prix for Mika Salo, the Finn here in the Toyota.
00:29:48It didn't really go according to plan in the early stages,
00:29:51but he's lapping quite quickly at the moment.
00:29:53Good straight-line speed from this Toyota.
00:29:55Their first season of Grand Prix racing has brought them a few points already.
00:30:00Enrico Bernoldi coming into the pits for his drive-through penalty.
00:30:02And he'll come, and in fact I think he just carried that penalty as a drive-through.
00:30:07But Mika Salo in 8th place is now lapping at the speed of the two race leaders,
00:30:11and that's quicker than Ralf Schumacher, Trulli and Fisichella.
00:30:15So, some instructions to Bernoldi on the oil pump,
00:30:18and making the odd switching change.
00:30:21And now, who is going to...
00:30:22This must be...
00:30:23Well, it must be one Ralf Schumacher.
00:30:25Only Ralf in the race.
00:30:26So, Ralf Schumacher having to make a second stop.
00:30:29Well, we've seen him struggling for pace somewhat.
00:30:31He's 30 seconds ahead of Trulli.
00:30:33That's just about enough time to get back out in third,
00:30:36as long as they have a clean stop.
00:30:38Well, this will be purely a tyre stop, it's not for fuel.
00:30:40He's slowing down.
00:30:41Ralf Schumacher slows down big time, coming through the chicane.
00:30:45Now, what is Ralf doing?
00:30:46Has he got a problem with the rear there?
00:30:48He's going straight on through the chicane.
00:30:49He must have a major problem.
00:30:50It may be a puncture or something that we're not able to see.
00:30:53Is that right rear? It is.
00:30:54It looks like the right rear is difficult to tell.
00:30:56Left rear doesn't look particularly good either.
00:30:59So, Ralf Schumacher's slowed.
00:31:00It is, I think, the left rear.
00:31:02Yes, there's a shredding of the left rear on Ralf Schumacher.
00:31:05It's probably picked up something from the carbon fibre on the circuit,
00:31:08and the tyre is deflating.
00:31:10Ralf will come in.
00:31:11The team will jack the rear of the car,
00:31:13but will be slightly down on that right rear.
00:31:15So, they're going to change it and get him out.
00:31:17He's got plenty of time.
00:31:19It's really a tyre stop for Ralf Schumacher.
00:31:21So, he should be okay just to change the tyres and get back out.
00:31:24Plenty of time ahead of Jarno Trulli, who runs in fourth position.
00:31:28Now, don't break the pit lane speed limit here, Ralf.
00:31:31You'll be safe enough if you just get out of the pits cleanly.
00:31:34Jarno Trulli will still end up behind you.
00:31:38Trulli's just coming through the last couple of corners onto this area.
00:31:42But there he is now, yes.
00:31:43So, it's a big advantage still for Ralf Schumacher.
00:31:45He retains third place.
00:31:47And, indeed, he's got a very nice, fresh set of tyres on his Williams BMW.
00:31:51And I would expect Ralf to be able to pull away quite comfortably from Jarno Trulli.
00:31:56As we go back to that little barrier,
00:31:58we see Jarno Trulli is some four or five seconds behind Ralf Schumacher in third place.
00:32:03So, oh, and we've got Felipe Massa.
00:32:06Massa has made contact, wiped off the front end of the car.
00:32:10This looks like it might have been quite a big accident.
00:32:12It is a very big accident.
00:32:13Massa comes down in.
00:32:14Oh, yes.
00:32:15And he comes down, and he doesn't even slow down.
00:32:17He just basically has other...
00:32:18It looks like a brake problem for me.
00:32:20Look at the amount of carbon fibre dust when the car hit the barrier.
00:32:23Both front wheels detached from the chassis.
00:32:25And the young Brazilian just climbs.
00:32:27He's not... He's just getting...
00:32:29He was a big impact.
00:32:30He really didn't slow down that much.
00:32:32And that looked to me as if he had a problem with the brakes.
00:32:34His head's moving.
00:32:35So, waiting to see his safety car once again on standby
00:32:39in case they need to bring this field to control under the safety car.
00:32:43That car badly situated.
00:32:45That is in the middle of the run-off area in the Saint-Denis corner.
00:32:49Nasty, frightening accident for Felipe Massa.
00:32:52Heading straight into the barrier at virtually unabated speed.
00:32:56The safety car is standing by.
00:32:58But he seems to be getting out of the car.
00:33:00I should think, if anything, John, he must be winded at least.
00:33:02I mean, that was a heavy, heavy impact.
00:33:04Yes, he went into the tower barrier.
00:33:06I would say certainly at 80 miles an hour.
00:33:08Looking at the pictures, the pumps were locked on.
00:33:10He really didn't have any way of slowing the car down.
00:33:12And it may have been a brake problem.
00:33:14We don't know.
00:33:15Maybe a stuck throttle.
00:33:16All the things that you think about as a racing driver.
00:33:18And there walks away.
00:33:19He'll be a little bit bruised and sore on Monday morning.
00:33:22But good to see the young Brazilian after a very, very tough Grand Prix.
00:33:26I suspect mostly he's really winded by that impact.
00:33:29He would have had some whiplash, of course, as well.
00:33:31And a head-on impact into a tower barrier like that.
00:33:34Never the most pleasant way to attack a barrier.
00:33:37So the safety car does not need to be deployed.
00:33:39There'll be relief there at the Salva team that their driver's OK.
00:33:42Take another look at this.
00:33:43And look at the speed that he comes in at.
00:33:45Well, he's got the fronts locked on.
00:33:47Are the rears still driving?
00:33:48That's always the question.
00:33:49He had no means of slowing the car down.
00:33:52Can't tell whether it was the throttle or not.
00:33:54But something clearly was not working.
00:33:56And that car went in at very high speed.
00:33:58Comes, hits the barrier.
00:34:00Three layers, two layers of tower barrier.
00:34:02And then springs back.
00:34:04So Felipe Massa getting one of those horrible moments.
00:34:07A racing driver always fears that something mechanical goes wrong
00:34:10when you're going into an area such as the San Diego corner.
00:34:13There's nothing you can do.
00:34:14He has fully locked brakes.
00:34:15No steering control whatsoever.
00:34:17And fortunately there was something there yielding to slow that car down
00:34:21and prevent any further injury to Felipe Massa.
00:34:25His car is added to the increasing number of stricken Grand Prix machines
00:34:30that are down there at Saint-Devault.
00:34:32And he adds to our list of retirements.
00:34:34We now have 13 cars still running in this race.
00:34:37That's still up on the last couple of years.
00:34:39We've seen 10 finishes in the last two races here at Monaco.
00:34:42Another view once more.
00:34:43Yes, again, to me it looks more like a throttle-related problem
00:34:46because he's got the front brakes locked.
00:34:48There's no sign of the rear brakes locking,
00:34:50which indicates that the power of the engine overcomes the power of the brakes.
00:34:53And all he can do is sit there and wait for that inevitable collision.
00:34:57And, you know, you can see the Marshall, in fact,
00:35:00just to see that Marshall just running to the right of your screen.
00:35:03Well, he saw it coming once again.
00:35:05I mean, the speed of that was more than 80 miles an hour.
00:35:07That was an excess.
00:35:08That was 100 miles an hour.
00:35:09And I think really maybe it was more a reaction to the impact
00:35:11than it was to seeing what was happening.
00:35:13And any driver, racing driver,
00:35:15who's ever experienced that kind of problem in the past
00:35:17knows that's one that you always dread.
00:35:20You've got no control over what looks to me like
00:35:22either a rear brake failure
00:35:24or a possible throttle still not even sticking.
00:35:28We have a new fastest lap for Rubens Barrichello.
00:35:31He's running in seventh place,
00:35:32but he's just set a new lap record.
00:35:35So the other Ferrari going quickly,
00:35:36closing up on Heinz-Harald Frentzen for what is sixth place.
00:35:39So Frentzen in the arrows
00:35:41is going to come under some pressure soon
00:35:43from the Brazilian in the second Ferrari.
00:35:45Up front, you're watching the two leaders.
00:35:48David Coulthard still in charge of this race.
00:35:50Ten laps to go now.
00:35:52Some 20 miles.
00:35:54If he can stay in front,
00:35:55this would be a superb victory for David Coulthard.
00:35:59But he's still got to complete it.
00:36:01Make the distance.
00:36:02And Michael Schumacher looking for any little mistakes.
00:36:05And I think Michael Schumacher really resigned
00:36:07to the fact that David Coulthard
00:36:09has got the legs today of Ferrari.
00:36:12And Michael, well,
00:36:13maybe it's a good PR exercise not to win here.
00:36:16And let McLaren go on and take victory.
00:36:18As we watch Rubens Barrichello once again.
00:36:20Fastest man on the circuit lap after lap.
00:36:231.18.6 was his previous best.
00:36:241.18.023.
00:36:27Yet again, a new lap record for the Brazilian.
00:36:29Now only three and a half seconds behind
00:36:31Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:36:32It may be less than the predicted two laps
00:36:34before he's on the tail of the arrows.
00:36:36But as we know, it's one thing to get there,
00:36:39but then he's still got to find a way past.
00:36:41But also he's taking lumps of time
00:36:43out of Giancarlo Fisichella in the Jordan
00:36:45in fifth place.
00:36:46So as he takes time from Fisichella,
00:36:48he's doing very much the same thing
00:36:50from Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:36:52Our race leader comes out of the tunnel,
00:36:55down to the chicane once more,
00:36:57past the harbour front here.
00:37:00And he's got to find a way past
00:37:02the Jaguar of Pedro de la Rosa,
00:37:04the other Jaguar of Eddie Irvine,
00:37:06just ahead of him on the road.
00:37:07And let's just watch the super slow-mo.
00:37:09You can see the suspension,
00:37:11the stiff suspension hardly allowing the car
00:37:13to move.
00:37:14The car actually bounces over the kerbs there.
00:37:17And there's really an opportunity to see
00:37:19the deflection that you get in these grumpy tyres.
00:37:22Michelin and Bridgestone,
00:37:23different philosophies of tyre manufacturer construction.
00:37:28So Coulthard gets through safely.
00:37:30Michael Schumacher gets through safely.
00:37:31Eddie Irvine pulls over to the right of track.
00:37:34Both Jaguar drivers being very polite
00:37:36and having their own private battle
00:37:38all the way down now in tenth and eleventh place.
00:37:41Eight laps to go now.
00:37:42Schumacher did close up just a little bit on that lap.
00:37:45A one-minute 20.709 on that lap.
00:37:49And Ross Brawn, the master tactician,
00:37:52really nothing he can do now
00:37:54except wait to see what his man Michael Schumacher can do
00:37:57and see how close Schumacher is
00:37:58to the back of the McLaren.
00:38:00Well, maybe the word is going out.
00:38:01Michael, we want these ten points.
00:38:03We're not going to be satisfied
00:38:04to see you finish second to David Coulthard.
00:38:06But David Coulthard, a very steely, tough competitor
00:38:09and somebody who is not intimidated by Michael Schumacher
00:38:12and also somebody who Michael Schumacher has got respect for.
00:38:16And he knows that if he tries something on,
00:38:18David Coulthard will defend.
00:38:20He's not going to concede.
00:38:23Schumacher follows through.
00:38:25Seventy laps completed now.
00:38:27All of the frontrunners have made their stops.
00:38:30Now we have to focus on this battle for the lead
00:38:32and also on what's on solo.
00:38:34Big shunt for Mikas Salo.
00:38:35And that's on the way up into the casino.
00:38:37He's lasted on the entry into the casino square,
00:38:41coming up the hill.
00:38:43Almost where Eddie Irvine crashed the other day in the Jaguar
00:38:46when he went off on somebody else's oil.
00:38:48The Mazanet corner.
00:38:49Mikas Salo, watch what happens.
00:38:51Puts the brakes on.
00:38:52Well, hit the curb, hit the barrier on the inside.
00:38:55He had a slight locking brake on the right front,
00:38:57but he hit the barrier.
00:38:58That threw the car straight across the track
00:39:00and slams into the barrier on the right side
00:39:02into the Mazanet.
00:39:03Well, a disappointing way to finish his 100th Grand Prix.
00:39:06And he's been four times in the points here in Monaco,
00:39:09but it's not going to happen this time.
00:39:11A shame for Toyota
00:39:12after their best qualifying performance to date.
00:39:15Barrichello now right up on the rear of Heinz-Harald Fenson
00:39:19for the final point in this race.
00:39:21Sixth place.
00:39:22Getting up to the back of Fenson's one thing
00:39:24with seven laps to go.
00:39:25Passing him will be entirely different.
00:39:27And in the meantime, Giancarlo Fisichello
00:39:29really running very quickly also to defend
00:39:32his fifth place and get two further points for Jordan.
00:39:36Here we are, riding with Rubens Barrichello then.
00:39:39And Fenson's car slipping and sliding around
00:39:42as we watch them come through the tunnel
00:39:44up to, again, 180 miles an hour.
00:39:46Back onto the brakes
00:39:47and very slow through the chicane itself.
00:39:50You can hear Michael really backing off quite early.
00:39:53This is the view of Micasalo.
00:39:54Watch as he turns in.
00:39:55Something locks the right front.
00:39:57Then he clips the barrier on the inside.
00:39:59Then all of a sudden, he's just a passenger
00:40:01and the Toyota swaps ends.
00:40:02Goes into the barrier.
00:40:04Left rear first.
00:40:07Well, a very strange-looking accident there.
00:40:09It's certainly something went wrong initially.
00:40:12The smoke coming off that right front.
00:40:14Looks perhaps a front wheel bearing failed
00:40:17on that right front
00:40:18and that effectively pitched him into the barrier
00:40:20on the left-hand side.
00:40:21It's certainly not a part of the track or a corner
00:40:23that you'd expect a driver of Salo's experience
00:40:25to make an error like that.
00:40:27And there was.
00:40:28They hit him a wobble
00:40:29and that would have just been sufficient
00:40:30to cause the problem to start.
00:40:32So, here we are.
00:40:33The battle for sixth position
00:40:35with the arrows of the very experienced German racer
00:40:39Heinz-Harald Frentzen
00:40:40ahead of the similarly experienced Rubens Barrichello.
00:40:43And, well, it's no good waving blue flags.
00:40:46I don't know what flag that was
00:40:47that was being waved there
00:40:48but this is a battle for position.
00:40:49And Rubens, of course, in the quicker car
00:40:51but really has to find a position
00:40:53and Heinz-Harald Frentzen, too canny and too experienced
00:40:56to offer that up.
00:40:57Also for Arrows to get one more point in the championship
00:41:00to go along with that
00:41:01when they scored earlier this year
00:41:02would be a real pleasure.
00:41:04Funds, of course, related to performance.
00:41:07And as we go back to the action
00:41:09Ralf Schumacher in third place.
00:41:12Ralf Schumacher a long way behind the race leaders.
00:41:14He's over a minute behind now
00:41:16from Coulthard and Michael Schumacher.
00:41:1872 laps completed.
00:41:20Six laps remaining
00:41:22in the glorious sunshine
00:41:23on the streets of Monaco.
00:41:25The most prestigious Grand Prix of the year
00:41:27is being run in absolutely picture-perfect conditions.
00:41:30And the fans are soaking up a race
00:41:32of true drama throughout.
00:41:34Coulthard has led from the very start
00:41:36but he has not had it all his own way
00:41:39and he still has to fend off Schumacher.
00:41:42There's a replay.
00:41:43This is Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Rubens Barrichello
00:41:45can't get much closer than that.
00:41:47Again, the blue flags being waved
00:41:48but, of course, it is important
00:41:50not to worry about them in this situation
00:41:52because this is a battle for position.
00:41:55Now we look from Frentzen's car
00:41:57and looking back at Barrichello's car
00:42:00and, of course, Fisichella's a bit further ahead of them
00:42:03up the road.
00:42:04Quite a long way ahead, in fact,
00:42:06so they won't have to worry about him at this stage.
00:42:09Just looking at the rear of Frentzen's car,
00:42:11that left rear tyre,
00:42:13quite a lot of wear on that inside shoulder
00:42:15maybe affecting the handling
00:42:16but, basically, he's got a car of greater performance behind him.
00:42:19So, behind Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:42:21Five laps to go, really,
00:42:23to just try not offer up opportunities
00:42:26to Rubens Barrichello.
00:42:28A little bit of a lock-up there for Frentzen
00:42:30but he keeps it under control.
00:42:34Desperately wants to finish in 6th place.
00:42:36Take that final world championship point,
00:42:39as you say, it's so crucial
00:42:40to this small team
00:42:42and having taken the point there in Barcelona,
00:42:45this would be a useful addition.
00:42:47But also Fisichella in 5th place
00:42:49has now got a battle of his own with Jarno Trulli.
00:42:51Less than half a second behind the Renault.
00:42:53So, Jordan in 5th place,
00:42:55looking to make that 4th place.
00:42:59Frentzen crashed out of the race here last year.
00:43:02Coming out of the tunnel, as you mentioned,
00:43:03a little bit like Takuma Sato.
00:43:05He just needs to keep it all together this time.
00:43:08Four laps remaining for him to hold on to 6th place.
00:43:13Climbing up the hill once more.
00:43:14And Barrichello, despite having that much faster Ferrari,
00:43:18cannot find a way of sneaking past.
00:43:20He has to try and force Frentzen into a mistake.
00:43:23What Frentzen is doing,
00:43:24just watching this rearward-facing camera,
00:43:26is he slows down a lot
00:43:28before he enters the corner,
00:43:29which then forces Barrichello to slow down,
00:43:31which then, of course, gives Frentzen the opportunity
00:43:33to sprint away.
00:43:34So it's a real seesaw battle
00:43:36between the Arrows and the Ferrari.
00:43:38But Frentzen really using all that experience and guile
00:43:41to try and unsettle Rubens Barrichello.
00:43:44Back with the leaders once more.
00:43:46David Coulthard versus Michael Schumacher.
00:43:49More traffic to deal with
00:43:50as they come through the swimming pool section.
00:43:52It's Nick Heidfeld in the Sauber who's just ahead.
00:43:55And it's a difficult part of the track
00:43:57to try and let someone through.
00:43:58And he is definitely holding them up a little bit
00:44:00as they come round through the last corner.
00:44:03Now he gets out of the way
00:44:04and Coulthard is able to accelerate cleanly.
00:44:06And Michael Schumacher didn't get a clean enough run there
00:44:10to be able to apply more pressure.
00:44:11The nerves down in the McLaren pit must be building.
00:44:14And look at the Ferrari pit equally there.
00:44:16On tenderhooks ready to see whether
00:44:18now with three laps to go
00:44:19Michael Schumacher can make one clear overtaking maneuver.
00:44:24He's strong through the casino section of the circuit
00:44:26down the hill into the Mirabeau.
00:44:27We watch them as they enter.
00:44:29But David Coulthard again places the McLaren
00:44:31in such a way it gives Michael Schumacher no options.
00:44:34Jordan ahead, Giancarlo Fisichella.
00:44:36Now he's in a battle for fourth place with Jarno Trulli.
00:44:390.4 of a second behind.
00:44:40So first and second catching up to fourth and fifth.
00:44:44Michael Schumacher never giving up.
00:44:46And you know, there have been world champions in the past
00:44:49that might have said second place, six points.
00:44:51None of my major rivals really in a particularly strong position.
00:44:55Ralf Schumacher will move up to joint second probably in the series.
00:44:58But Michael Schumacher does not back off.
00:45:00He still keeps the pressure on Coulthard.
00:45:03And maybe that's just an indicator of why he is a four times world champion.
00:45:07He does not settle for second place.
00:45:09Well, good to see Felipe Massa walking back.
00:45:11Clearly still shocked and stunned by that very frightening accident
00:45:15some laps ago into the Sanderbo corner.
00:45:17But clearly no physical problems.
00:45:19Here's the battle for fourth place.
00:45:20Giancarlo Fisichella on the Jordan.
00:45:22Jarno Trulli, a former Jordan driver in the Renault.
00:45:25Fisichella's in problems.
00:45:27Yeah, he's in trouble.
00:45:28He let through race leader and Michael Schumacher as well.
00:45:31So being very gentlemanly despite the fact
00:45:34that he had a battle of his own to deal with.
00:45:36But he'll hope that that'll get paid back.
00:45:38He'll tag on to the back of Michael Schumacher.
00:45:40And then when the two leaders go through, Jarno Trulli,
00:45:43he might try and slip through.
00:45:44It's going to be questionable.
00:45:45He's close enough.
00:45:46He hasn't retained enough gap to Michael Schumacher.
00:45:49Then Trulli has to then allow leader to go through.
00:45:52I don't think Fisichella is going to be close enough to make it up.
00:45:55Well, he might be because Trulli hasn't been able to move out of the way yet.
00:45:59And Michael Schumacher sensing
00:46:01and maybe there's a little opportunity here somewhere through the tunnel.
00:46:05Coulthard has to follow the Renault of Jarno Trulli through this one.
00:46:09Trulli surely will move out of the way on the exit.
00:46:11The blue flag waves.
00:46:12Trulli indeed gets out of the way of Coulthard
00:46:14and gets out of the way of Schumacher.
00:46:16And here comes Fisichella.
00:46:17Fisichella on the attack.
00:46:18Oh, and he doesn't quite make it.
00:46:20Not yet anyway.
00:46:21Well, he really had a good opportunity to put himself into position.
00:46:24But here we go to Joe Romero's former McLaren.
00:46:27Almost a god in McLaren.
00:46:29That battle, Fisichella truly did a good job to let these two through
00:46:33and not give Fisichella too much of an opportunity.
00:46:36But they're back, nose to gearbox.
00:46:38And just on a word from Felipe Massa,
00:46:40you'd thought the poor guy would have had a minute to catch his breath.
00:46:43Well, he spoke to our guys in the pit lane
00:46:45and he said he felt he had a rear brake failure.
00:46:47That's what caused that very unpleasant looking accident at the San Diego.
00:46:51We're on to the final lap here.
00:46:53And David Coulthard has driven superbly all afternoon.
00:46:57And it looks as though he's going to be able to take his second win around the street.
00:47:02But Michael Schumacher still there.
00:47:04Still looking for any chance.
00:47:06And Coulthard has to keep it together.
00:47:08He's driven absolutely brilliantly.
00:47:10One lap remaining, less than one lap now.
00:47:13And he's just got to keep it together over the remaining mile or so
00:47:17that will lead him to the chequered flag.
00:47:19Well, I don't think any principal threat's going to come from Michael Schumacher.
00:47:22All he now needs is to make sure he drives cleanly, doesn't make any errors,
00:47:26doesn't maybe anticipate victory before he comes across start-finish line.
00:47:30Out of the tunnel for the last time in a racing lap.
00:47:32Down to this very tight and easily made aero chicane.
00:47:37The last few corners for David Coulthard.
00:47:40The support from the British fans on the harbour there
00:47:43as they see their man heading towards victory.
00:47:46McLaren, Mercedes have done it again in Monaco shortly.
00:47:50It will be 12 victories in some 19 starts.
00:47:54And that is a brilliant achievement.
00:47:56Their first victory of the year.
00:47:58Michael Schumacher is beaten for only the second time in 2002.
00:48:02David Coulthard wins in Monaco
00:48:05after not putting a wheel wrong for 78 laps of the toughest track on the calendar.
00:48:11And an absolutely superb drive from David Coulthard.
00:48:14Took the lead when the lights went out.
00:48:16Really never challenged on red.
00:48:18For me, this is one of the finest wins I've seen from David Coulthard.
00:48:22He's had a tough time over the last year at McLaren.
00:48:25And really lapped the entire field up to third place.
00:48:29David Coulthard sometimes has not been the favourite son of McLaren.
00:48:34Kimi Räikkönen now has taken over from Mika Häkkinen.
00:48:37David Coulthard's drive today, superb.
00:48:40Fantastic.
00:48:43OK, well done David. Great job.
00:48:45That has to be your best ever, David.
00:48:48I told you, no presents.
00:48:50But thank you.
00:48:53Well, that was team Barcelona. Dennis talking to David Coulthard.
00:48:57And then we will see a smile on Ron's face, which has been lacking all year.
00:49:02You can hear Adrian Newey there as well, also thanking David.
00:49:05What a relief this is to the team, John.
00:49:08They've had a torrid time in the early part of the 2002 season.
00:49:13It really hasn't gone their way.
00:49:15They've had a couple of third place finishes.
00:49:17Well, three in all, with Räikkönen as well.
00:49:20But the first time that they've had a car win a Grand Prix this year.
00:49:24And the first win for David since Austria last season.
00:49:27Look at that happiness in the pit, David's girlfriend.
00:49:32The whole team absolutely over the moon with the victory.
00:49:35A victory maybe in some respects they didn't anticipate prior to this weekend.
00:49:40And a Grand Prix then almost two minutes faster than last year's Grand Prix
00:49:44when Michael Schumacher took victory.
00:49:47Well, we saw a race that David Coulthard dominated.
00:49:51But it was that middle section of the race, John,
00:49:53when Michael Schumacher made the earlier pit stop that was so crucial.
00:49:57And that's really where Coulthard managed to get the job done.
00:49:59Yes, but also I think we should give great credit to the team
00:50:02because we saw the problems that David Coulthard had.
00:50:04The team were able to put into effect remedies to prevent that problem.
00:50:09There was smoke coming out. In fact, it was on the left-hand bank of the engine.
00:50:12We thought David Coulthard was heading for retirement before mid-distance.
00:50:15Yet the team were able to do this by means of telemetry
00:50:18from the pits to the car on the circuit.
00:50:21Rectify a cure. And that is a real team victory.
00:50:24But I think the credit for on the day goes to David Coulthard.
00:50:27A superb run under pressure for the entire 78 laps.
00:50:32Well, how must this feel? His second victory.
00:50:36And to become a multiple winner here at Monaco.
00:50:39He joins a very, very select group of people.
00:50:43Some of the greatest drivers in Grand Prix history.
00:50:46And David joins that list as a multiple winner around the streets of Monaco.
00:50:50Out he gets!
00:50:53Coulthard, the winner.
00:50:55And he is going to enjoy this moment to its full.
00:51:00That was one tough race. You can see his overalls matted with sweat.
00:51:03And he bows towards the royal family that are here.
00:51:09And he will very shortly go up onto the podium and receive the winner's prize.
00:51:14David Coulthard thoroughly delighted there.
00:51:16His team, the guys that work with him day in, day out at Grand Prix.
00:51:20And really he's done a job for them here this afternoon.
00:51:25He's such a great bloke and very popular within the team.
00:51:29And there, the congratulations from Michael Schumacher.
00:51:32And he beat Michael fair and square today.
00:51:34He's done it before.
00:51:35And he's done it in true style.
00:51:37On a track that Michael, to a certain extent, considers his own.
00:51:41He loves the place.
00:51:42But today, he did not have the answer.
00:51:44Part of that was from qualifying.
00:51:46But a lot of it was from the race itself.
00:51:49A lot of it did come from the qualifying.
00:51:51But nevertheless, David, he never put a wheel wrong.
00:51:54He drove a wheel perfect Grand Prix under pressure.
00:51:57Initially from Juan Pablo Montoya.
00:51:59And then after Montoya went out from Michael Schumacher.
00:52:02And well, I think they'll be partying tonight in Monte Carlo.
00:52:05David's hotel.
00:52:07And all the friends, the guests that are staying there will have a special evening indeed.
00:52:12A little discussion going on between the Schumacher brothers.
00:52:15Ralph taking third place for Williams BMW.
00:52:18Delighted with that, no doubt.
00:52:20And David Coulthard receiving the winner's trophy for the second time here at Monaco.
00:52:27And presented by Prince Rainier.
00:52:29Great to see that.
00:52:30Just come out of hospital.
00:52:32Gonna be 80 years old on Friday.
00:52:34But here for the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix.
00:52:40An event that really is so concentrated in the minds of Formula 1 fans and motorsport fans around the world.
00:52:49As the blue ribbon event of Grand Prix racing.
00:52:52Michael Schumacher receiving the trophy for second.
00:52:55Princess Caroline presenting Ralph Schumacher with his trophy for third.
00:53:13Time for the national anthem.
00:53:56A very happy David Coulthard.
00:53:58Girlfriend Simone there.
00:54:01Applauding his efforts this afternoon.
00:54:03He really showed true class in that drive.
00:54:06Beating Michael Schumacher in a fair fight.
00:54:09And McLaren Mercedes taking their first victory of the year.
00:54:12Ten points to David Coulthard.
00:54:14Doubling his points for the first time.
00:54:18And bringing him up a little bit in the overall standings.
00:54:21Good news for him.
00:54:22Barrichello also fought well today.
00:54:24But had problems.
00:54:25Wasn't able to quite get into the points as it turned out.
00:54:30So Ferrari not having quite the dominance run that they had in Austria last time out.
00:54:35But there's a very happy Ron Dennis as well.
00:54:37Yeah, so Ron's getting a little bit of a head start.
00:54:39He's got a little bit of a head start.
00:54:41He's got a little bit of a head start.

01:00:25Time to cool off after all the excitement of the Grand Prix.
01:00:29Time for us to make our way over to the press conference,
01:00:33where David Coulthard, Michael Schumacher and Ralf Schumacher
01:00:37are ready to answer some questions.
01:00:41A thoroughly exciting 60th Monaco Grand Prix.
01:00:44Victory to David Coulthard for McLaren,
01:00:46Michael Schumacher second for Ferrari
01:00:48and Ralf Schumacher third for Williams.
01:00:50David, your 12th Grand Prix win,
01:00:52but it's been just over a year since your last one.
01:00:54How do you feel?
01:00:56It's unbelievable.
01:00:57I feel fantastic because naturally we've had a difficult start to the season.
01:01:01It was looking pretty difficult for us to win a Grand Prix
01:01:05and our hopes were pinned on coming to Monaco
01:01:09that we could have a good performance.
01:01:11Obviously that's been the case
01:01:12and the traction control that obviously caused me some problems last year
01:01:16worked fantastically this year
01:01:18and then it was just a question of keeping off the barriers.
01:01:21Now there seems to be around lap 30
01:01:23some smoke coming from the back of your car for several laps.
01:01:25Were you aware of that and did the team spot it
01:01:28and tell you to do something to your engine to stop it continuing like that
01:01:31or indeed blowing up?
01:01:32Yeah, I felt for a few laps as if things were tightening up a little bit.
01:01:38So obviously at that point I could see some smoke
01:01:40when I was coming out of Casino
01:01:42and I thought, this doesn't look good.
01:01:44But I raided to the team, they said all the systems were working normally
01:01:49so I just ignored it and thankfully it didn't cause a problem.
01:01:52Well, congratulations David.
01:01:54Michael, you spent an awful lot of the race
01:01:55looking very closely at the back of Juan Pablo Montoya's car.
01:01:58Do you think had you managed to get away, get past him
01:02:01you'd have left him behind you?
01:02:03I think I did.
01:02:04I mean, we did a pit stop and they did a pit stop.
01:02:08I'm not sure whether he did already his pit stop or not
01:02:11but I think we were by far fast enough to stay in front after the pit stop.
01:02:16It was a matter of David obviously as he put up a decent gap
01:02:20between Montoya and himself.
01:02:22Which, yeah, well, if the traffic we had
01:02:26within the first couple of laps after our pit stop
01:02:30we wouldn't have had this.
01:02:32It would have been very tight.
01:02:33But anyway, I mean, they did a great job
01:02:35and they really deserved this win today.
01:02:37But when you closed up in the last 20 laps
01:02:40you were right on the tail of David's car.
01:02:42Did you ever think there might be a moment when you could make a move
01:02:44or were you also aware with Montoya retired
01:02:47that if you finished in second you'd have a 33-point advantage?
01:02:50I knew both and I kept on pushing
01:02:54because in Monaco nothing is for certain
01:02:57and you have really to go until the last lap, last corner
01:03:00and that's what I did.
01:03:01I was trying to get my opportunity
01:03:04but he drove a fine race and didn't give me any chance.
01:03:07Michael, thank you.
01:03:09Ralph, Juan Pablo was running ahead of you
01:03:13in fact towards the second third of the race
01:03:16and then he suddenly slowed and pulled to one side on the start-finish straight.
01:03:19Do you know what his problem was?
01:03:20And did the team then tell you to watch out for the same on your car?
01:03:23It was definitely not a team order.
01:03:25So that was not the case.
01:03:28No, I think he had a problem,
01:03:31a technical problem on the back side of his car.
01:03:33I don't know exactly what it was
01:03:35but he knew that he couldn't go as quick so he let me by.
01:03:39Now you had a problem with your own.
01:03:40You had to come in for a second pit stop towards the end.
01:03:42Did that tyre suddenly go wrong
01:03:44or was it something that was gradual, your left rear tyre?
01:03:47No, it suddenly went away.
01:03:49I'd have to check with the team where it was.
01:03:51I certainly got via radio that there was something wrong with it.
01:03:56We luckily had enough of a gap for it to pit again
01:03:59and to come in front of Tulli again.
01:04:01Ralph, thank you.
01:04:03Back to you, David.
01:04:04You said coming to Monaco that it was a race that,
01:04:06unlike the ones earlier this season,
01:04:07you felt McLaren-Mercedes combination could be competitive.
01:04:10Do you think the same will be true in Canada?
01:04:12Well, obviously Canada is a very different circuit
01:04:15and even when we think to last year
01:04:17when we were quite competitive in the first half of the season,
01:04:20I think we were on the second row there.
01:04:22So it may be a different story in Montreal
01:04:24but nonetheless I think we're all going to enjoy this victory.
01:04:27They're difficult to come by, especially in this season
01:04:30and I'm delighted that I was able to win this race for the McLaren team.
01:04:34Thank you very much.
01:04:35Now, Michael and Ralph, if you'd like to speak.
01:04:38So a delighted David Coulthard
01:04:40and deservedly so after a great performance.
01:04:43Just a quick note as well, John,
01:04:44it's Ralph Schumacher's first ever finish around Monaco
01:04:46so he's got one in the bag now
01:04:48and it was a good solid third place.
01:04:50He didn't have the pace of these lead two
01:04:52and I think, as Michael said there,
01:04:54I don't think Montoya really would have been able to match Schumacher
01:04:58after the pit stops.
01:04:59No, I think that Michael Schumacher in the race
01:05:01was the quickest car.
01:05:02I mean, we saw from Rubens Barrichello, for example,
01:05:04when Barrichello was in clear air,
01:05:06the speed that he could run at.
01:05:07Michael acknowledges that, you know, it's all about qualifying.
01:05:10They didn't get the job done.
01:05:11Started in the second row of the grid,
01:05:13couldn't make up position,
01:05:14which of course David Coulthard did so successfully.
01:05:16And Juan Pablo Montoya, not particularly complimentary
01:05:19about the software in the launch control system
01:05:22on his Williams BMW.
01:05:23Nevertheless, Monaco is a special racetrack.
01:05:26It's not just about the race,
01:05:27it's about the build up on the Thursday practice
01:05:30then into Saturday morning qualifying
01:05:32and Montoya and Williams did a great job,
01:05:35sadly for Montoya.
