00:00:00It's the Monaco Grand Prix only on ITV race seven of f1
00:00:052001 Martin Brundle's finished on the podium behind Michael Schumacher here
00:00:09Alongside him fresh from collecting a special achievement award from the Royal Television Society. Let's welcome Murray Walker
00:00:17Thank you, Jim. It was a great honor and it really warmed my heart
00:00:22and talking of which the old tickers working overtime right now because
00:00:26Just in case everybody out there hadn't already worked it out. This is the big one
00:00:32sunshine by the truckload
00:00:34Glamorous women by the regiment. Grand Prix racing's most charismatic location
00:00:39that is Formula One Monte Carlo style with David Coulthard up front and
00:00:45Jaguar looking much much better Eddie Irvine in sixth position
00:00:50You've heard what may be but we sincerely hope will not be a problem from James Allen
00:00:56Traction control, you know, how narrow this circuit is James has told you Martin has shown you
00:01:03Sainte-de-vote the first corner this year with a
00:01:06magnificent new statue of Grover Williams in the Bugatti the man who won the first Monaco Grand Prix in
00:01:131929 what's your view of the start?
00:01:16I think Mika Hakkinen summed it up nicely on the gridwalk to say that, you know
00:01:21If you're just holding position and you emerge from Sainte-de-vote on the first lap, it's almost an achievement around here
00:01:27But as we know, it's very very difficult to overtake. It's going to be a long haul
00:01:31I think to those first pit stops Murray we know from Austria
00:01:35We think we know from earlier races in the air particularly Austria that the McLaren can probably
00:01:39Carry more fuel than the Ferrari by three or four laps
00:01:43It means they're going to be heavier at the start Michael will be wanting to try to pounce early on and
00:01:49Get away from the McLaren's if he's got half a chance into turn one
00:01:53But of course, they've all got launch control if that works
00:01:55They should be away from the grid and then it'll just be a very long haul to that
00:02:00First pit stop and it's so easy around here married to make one tiny slip. You need total
00:02:07Concentration for an hour and 50 minutes in the most extreme circumstances and one tiny tiny laps of concentration
00:02:14You've actually guaranteed to hit the wall
00:02:1678 laps of it. This race is going to last of a thick end of two hours and it is hot
00:02:22It's going to be about one minute 51 hour 50 minute race. The track temperature is
00:02:2737 degrees at some 20 degrees hotter than it was in Austria two weeks ago and
00:02:34They do literally thousands of gear changes in this race
00:02:38It's just as well that they've got those
00:02:40Paddles under the steering wheel to simplify things these days in the old days when they were doing it themselves with a gear lever
00:02:46They literally came in at the end of the race with blisters on their hands
00:02:51Passing of course as you've heard many many times is a major problem Martin's talked to you about
00:02:56Staying out a long time and the McLaren staying out perhaps longer than the Ferraris
00:03:01I wouldn't expect a stop a fuel refueling stop
00:03:06Before round about lap 50 out of 78 laps here at Monaco and I puts my mind back to
00:03:121992
00:03:14Fantastic race when Nigel Mansell led Ayrton Senna Nigel in the Williams Senna in the McLaren
00:03:21Mansell thought he had a puncture had to come in Senna took the lead
00:03:24Mansell caught him and swarmed all over his gearbox for the rest of the race
00:03:28but did not win it six wins for Ayrton Senna five wins for Graham Hill and
00:03:34Michael Schumacher has won this race four times already
00:03:38Ninety-four five seven and nine last year
00:03:41He was winning leading by a country mile and a cracked exhaust pipe burnt out his rear suspension David won the race
00:03:48Can he do it again and in the warm-up this morning Coulthard fastest then by a fraction from Hacken and so the two McLaren's looking
00:03:55Very strong through warm-up and through free practice. You have to say Hackenham was fastest in three of the four of them
00:04:00So we're expecting a lot of speed that McLaren certainly looking much
00:04:05Stronger much more secure than it did in the early races of the season, but we know how acrobatic
00:04:10Michael Schumacher can be and look at the state of those front tires
00:04:15Clearly Barrichello starting the race on used tires
00:04:18I think they get some understeer for the first ten laps brand new ones and
00:04:22Then they start to come in Barrichello deciding he wants good grip right from the start and another set of Michelin this time on a Williams
00:04:29But that'll be Ralph Schumacher then and he also wants to start on look new rear tires
00:04:36You can see the shiny the glistening of the rear tires
00:04:39That is the releasing agent that they put in the molds takes a little bit of getting off
00:04:44Just oh no and Coulthard is stalled
00:04:48This is terrible
00:04:53If they all get clear he's gonna have to start and Kekkonen comes out from behind him
00:04:58If this is what happened to Michael Schumacher at the Japanese Grand Prix
00:05:03What a terrible psychological downer it is for David Coulthard now
00:05:07He's gonna have to start from the back of the grid. Yes. He is Coulthard then if they can get it running
00:05:13Can't imagine how or why that has happened yet again on a McLaren. So
00:05:19Just no idea, of course standing up in the corner
00:05:21He is obviously extremely angry about it Hakkinen can make his way back through the field James
00:05:27What can you tell us I'm standing about six feet from the back of the McLaren Coulthard punching the steering wheel in desperate desperate
00:05:33Frustration whether it's the technology or whether it's him and it's another bit of what Ron Dennis referred to as brain fade
00:05:38We will have to find out later in the race to rear wheels are spinning
00:05:40That's the sound of his engine firing up guys. So he's gonna go round
00:05:44He will take the start of the race at the very back Coulthard
00:05:47Well, I just cannot imagine anything that could possibly have been worse for David Coulthard here and Monaco all places there
00:05:55He is going into Sainte-Devote
00:05:58After Beau Rivage instead of first on the track
00:06:01He is 22nd on the track the man who is four points behind Michael Schumacher in the world
00:06:07Championship the man who has scored points in every race at so far this year and the only one to do so
00:06:13Cruel cruel bit of luck, but something has happened to McLaren in the last two races
00:06:18It looks as though I don't know but it looks as though it's a system problem
00:06:22he knows Mary who knows but because he had to start from the back in Barcelona and
00:06:27Lost his front wing in the first corner
00:06:29So easy to do here as well and the cool guys only hope is that there's an aborted start
00:06:34There's somebody else stores their engines and with an abort to start or a red flag flag on lap one
00:06:40He may have a chance of resuming his original grip position
00:06:43But right now the new lap record holder of this circuit is starting at the tail of the field
00:06:48Yeah, well spotted Martin
00:06:50That's what David Coulthard must be hoping for and of course Michael Schumacher there is now effectively in pole position
00:06:57Smiling all over his face, but as I said before the same thing has happened to him in the past
00:07:02But right now it is Michael Schumacher up front Vika Hakan and behind him now effectively second on the grid
00:07:09You can see Rubens Barrichello's Ferrari behind the Michael Schumacher's
00:07:14Ralph Schumacher is now effectively fourth on the grid in the Williams and Eddie Irvine up to fifth position and there is
00:07:21The unfortunate David Coulthard. Well teeth gritted eyes slitted
00:07:26He's gonna have to really get down to it now in the worst place in the world as the third light goes on
00:07:33the fourth light goes on the fifth and
00:07:36It is go go go
00:07:53But Schumacher leads Hakan and leads Barrichello leads Ralph Schumacher fourth in the Williams as they come through Casino Square
00:08:01Down past the Hotel Metropole turning into the Mirabeau now the grand
00:08:07Cabin, that is about a 20 mile an hour corner in first gear and thank heavens
00:08:12But David Coulthard won't be saying this they have all gone away safely
00:08:17It's a good start at Monaco and David is I was wrong about him passing Tarso Marquez
00:08:23And he is still last on the track first on
00:08:28The wall somebody hit the wall, who is it? It looks like a salvo to me. It is a salvo. It's Raikkonen, isn't it?
00:08:35Yeah
00:08:38Now now this this is going to be a problem
00:08:41I think there's not a crane then look there. You see how the Heidfeld slam into the wall
00:08:46I think there was some contact with the arrows and just launched Heidfeld
00:08:49front wheels will be off the ground nowhere turning in or breaking and
00:08:53Coulthard just making his way around the back of it
00:08:56Just trying to avoid the various disasters really not attacking on that first lap probably the sensible thing to do
00:09:01But up front then Schumacher leads over the line
00:09:06Well now Michael Schumacher can control this race
00:09:10He's second fastest on the grid one of the fastest
00:09:17Record and now with four Monaco Grand Prix victories behind him already
00:09:21He has a clear track in front of him. He has Mika Hakkinen at the end of the first lap
00:09:26A massive 1.1 seconds behind him doesn't look it on the screen, but it is
00:09:31Rubens Barrichello third
00:09:33Ralf Schumacher in fourth position and his teammate Montoya is right behind him
00:09:38Now Montoya effectively start in sixth
00:09:41But he's gained a place already and the Colombian has driven here in the past in Formula 3000
00:09:50Pablo Montoya
00:09:51He hasn't done all that well by his standards in qualifying seventh on the grid
00:09:56But here we are at the chicane they come out the tunnel at some 180 miles an hour Schumacher
00:10:03Hakkinen, Barrichello, Ralf
00:10:06Then Montoya, Eddie Irvine up there, Trulli, Villeneuve
00:10:11Fisichella, Alessi
00:10:13Panis, Raikkonen and
00:10:16Fredsen back there
00:10:17so
00:10:19Michael Schumacher, dream start for him, Murray
00:10:21If he has a little less fuel on board
00:10:23It's perfect for him to be able to try and stretch away at the front end there
00:10:26Hakkinen more having to defend from Barrichello than chasing after Michael at this time
00:10:31But for Coulthard still down in 21st place passing a lot of people in Barcelona is difficult enough around here Murray
00:10:38virtually impossible
00:10:40Well, I'm sure James Allen or Luis will be trying desperately to find out what has happened to David Coulthard
00:10:46They'll be talking to the McLaren people. We'll let you know as soon as we know ourselves
00:10:50I have to say sadly it is of academic interest because my old cliche anything can happen in Formula One and it normally does
00:10:57but for
00:10:59David Coulthard, a claw his way up from 22nd on the grid into the points would be miraculous to win the race would be
00:11:06Unbelievable, but stranger things not much, but stranger things have happened
00:11:12Montoya is flying Barrichello is flying. Eddie Irvine is in sixth position in the points and
00:11:19The Jaguar team have yet this year to score a World Championship point
00:11:25Irvine loves this circuit. He's had a second a third and a fourth. He was fourth last year fingers crossed for him
00:11:30Look at those two BMW Williams on their Michelins
00:11:33Hanging on there very very nicely in fourth and fifth place Montoya fastest man on the track
00:11:39Last time around and here is a replay of the start Coulthard is missing and really copybook starts for the
00:11:47We think Montoya's off somewhere. There he is. There he is. It's the exit from the swimming pool
00:11:54So that's the first retirement. Let's see what happens
00:11:57Montoya runs wide out steps the back into the armco and that is the first right-hander at the swimming pool
00:12:04He's parked it in a nice tidy place. There's a crane there
00:12:07They'll be able to haul the Williams BMW off the track. No points for Montoya
00:12:11Yeah, the marshals are particularly good down there helped by that crane and they'll operate under waved yellows
00:12:17which means the drivers must significantly slow down and
00:12:21That they will have to do but they will clear that car very very quickly
00:12:26Montoya losing in the first part of the swimming pool whacking the farrier launched across the curves
00:12:31I think lost the back end of the car and finishes accident at the end of the swimming pool
00:12:35So a bit of an untidy link
00:12:38is in fifth position, but it's the first four who are making the running and
00:12:44Down there in the pit lane. You can see Bertie Luciano Bertie
00:12:47You had a very big crash yesterday, but his brakes failed approaching Sandovat, but James Allen has got news for us
00:12:54Yes, I'm down at the McLaren timing stander
00:12:56I just went up to Pat Fry David Coulthard senior race engineer as if you've got any idea what caused that he said
00:13:02Yeah, so you're gonna tell me he said no, maybe after the race. They'll let us know whether it was David or the electronics
00:13:07Well, yep
00:13:11This is the third presumably
00:13:17Three races they had one in Austria, of course with Paul Mika Hakkinen
00:13:22They had one in Spain if it is a systems problem again here to put it mildly
00:13:26They will be kicking themselves. You can see the alarm and the fury on David Coulthard's face his eyes widened behind the visor
00:13:34He looked across at the pit lane as much as to say it's gone. The engine's gone. I've lost the power
00:13:40That's exactly what he'd have happened. He's now in 19th place. He's got past Montoya
00:13:46Of course, he's got past Heinfeld. Of course, they're both out of the race
00:13:49He's now 18th because he's gone past Bertie and Tarso Marcus
00:13:53And David Coulthard's lapping at about 124.9
00:13:58That's 1.1 seconds slower than Michael Schumacher who's currently the fastest
00:14:03But of course Coulthard is being blocked all the way. He's having to fight his way past people
00:14:07Yes, he's done a new fastest sector in the middle on that last lap. As soon as he gets clear air
00:14:11He'll just home straight in on the guy in front because he's got a faster car as we know
00:14:16He's really been on form around here. Did I see what was Hakkinen passing?
00:14:20Was that a Ferrari that Hakkinen behind Hakkinen or is Michael Schumacher's lead now 1.9?
00:14:26No, it must have been Barrichello I saw in the background
00:14:28Yeah, it's it's very easy to get but Barrichello has really been flying in the second Ferrari
00:14:35And there is Michael Schumacher. He's coming through now
00:14:38He's coming through to complete his fifth lap. On lap four he led by 1.9 seconds. Up to San Devote he goes
00:14:46He's increased his lead by 7 tenths of a second in that one lap to two and a half seconds and Rubens Barrichello
00:14:53He's hanging on behind him
00:14:54But the top Michelin runner at the moment Ralph Schumacher the man who won the San Marino Grand Prix in the Williams BMW
00:15:02He's holding on to Barrichello and Hakkinen ahead of him with no trouble at all
00:15:071.23.9 for Hakkinen
00:15:091.24.1 for Ralph Schumacher. There he is his teammate Montoya already out of the race
00:15:16As is Nick Heinfeld
00:15:18So two retirements 22 started 20 are still running David Coulthard who got away last is now 18
00:15:26We know the Bridgestones are probably graining a bit and hurting a little bit for the first 10 laps
00:15:31Michael just with a piece of debris there caught a piece of ribbon or something caught no problems at all for him
00:15:38That's well clear of any radiator ducts or brake ducts. So no drama for Michael Schumacher, but
00:15:43The Michelin tires of Ralph Schumacher current fourth place man
00:15:46He looks good at this stage
00:15:48Will he be able to hang on in there as those Bridgestones really come into play between lap say 12 and lap
00:15:5556 or whenever they're coming in
00:15:57Well as if he hadn't got any talent and he knows he's got enough of that
00:16:01This is where a race trained brain like Michael Schumacher's really comes into its own. This is his
00:16:07150th Grand Prix, but a particular interest is the blue car that you're watching now. It's Jack or you were it's Jack Carlo Fisichella
00:16:15He's in eighth place in the Benetton having started in 10th position. The Benetton's are going much much better here
00:16:23They have a massive power deficiency with their Renault V10 engines
00:16:26But it doesn't matter as much at Monaco as it does at some of the faster circuits like Silverstone
00:16:32So we're on lap seven and last time around for the first time in this race
00:16:35Mika Hakkinen second place man Hakkinen was slightly faster than leader Michael Schumacher
00:16:41The first time Hakkinen has been able to peg that lead that Schumacher has built up of 2.4 seconds
00:16:48Then and that is Coulthard cruising up to the back of both the arrows the problem
00:16:54He's got he's gonna pass them fair and square
00:16:56He has no advantage of blue flags if he was lapping them
00:17:00they'd have to scamper out of the way within three corners and the problem for Coulthard is as
00:17:04Schumacher and co come through the field start lapping cars, which they will do several times many of these cars
00:17:11Then they get the benefit of the blue flags and Coulthard's got a muscle his way through
00:17:15Well, the lead of the two orange arrows is Enrique Bernalde
00:17:20The Brazilian driver with his teammate Jos Verstappen tucked up behind him and David Coulthard looking for a way past both of them
00:17:27There is Jenson Button. There is Alonso
00:17:30Here is Bernalde followed by Verstappen followed by David Coulthard in 18th position
00:17:36Into the swimming pool left-hander right-hander right-hander left-hander coming up then down to the Rascasse
00:17:42You can remember what James Allen was saying about how narrow this circuit is how difficult it is to pass
00:17:48And if you put your car in just the right position as Senna did in 92
00:17:53Even if you're Nigel Manson, you're not going to get past
00:17:55Well, even if you're David Coulthard and you've got a power advantage over the car in front
00:18:01It's not going to help you as much as it would in other places
00:18:04He's just got to Harry Bernalde in front of him who has been passed incidentally by Jos Verstappen
00:18:11I often think there's sense
00:18:13I know if I had a car that was down in the back end of the field and you've got a guy behind you
00:18:16Who's out of position, you know, he's going to get you in the end
00:18:19His car is much faster and often you can cause yourself a lot of loss of time by fighting
00:18:25The inevitable rather than just letting him through and letting him get on with it
00:18:28But you know, that's a common-sense mentality when you're out of the car
00:18:32When you're the adrenaline's flowing in the car, you don't want to give anything of course
00:18:36Human nature says they shall not pass
00:18:39It's the measure no line philosophy and Mika Häkkinen has just put up the fastest lap of the race
00:18:44He was two and a half seconds behind Michael Schumacher. He's closed it to two seconds now
00:18:51Can David Coulthard do anything about Bernalde because Verstappen has. Verstappen's got past his teammate
00:18:57He's pulling away from him. David Coulthard still 18th
00:19:00He's got 12 places to gain before he even gets into the points and Häkkinen then another new fastest lap of
00:19:061.22.3 the gap now down to just 1.6 seconds
00:19:10Häkkinen regrouping coming back at Michael
00:19:13Does Michael Schumacher have an answer and there is the scrap see for yourself Häkkinen definitely close to that Ferrari gearbox. Yeah
00:19:21McLaren who had problems in the first two races this year are just as quick just as reliable as
00:19:27Ferrari now and in Mika Häkkinen and Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard
00:19:33Of course, you've got the finest drivers in the world two of them up front Schumacher leading the race
00:19:39Here is the race order as they exit the tunnel at 180 miles an hour down to the chicane
00:19:45Round to the swimming pool Michael Schumacher leads Häkkinen by 1.6 seconds with Rubens Barrichello
00:19:513.9 seconds behind the leader third place Ralph Schumacher is still fourth and dropping back Eddie Irvine
00:19:57Magnificent sixth in the Jaguar sixth is Trulli seventh is Jack Villeneuve in the B.A.R
00:20:03Eighth Fisichella, ninth Felice and tenth Panis. Now fifth then for Irvine Jensen Button down in 14th
00:20:09Not too bad start at 18 up to 14th would have gained one place with Coulthard's demotion from the grid nonetheless
00:20:16Jensen having a reasonably strong race. We're going to take a short break
00:22:34Lap 10, lap 11 out of 78 as you look at Jensen Buttons Benetton coming towards us
00:22:41Pursued by Fernando Alonso. Yeah, you were seeing
00:22:44The bubble they blew up there off the back of Jensen Buttons Benetton was the the gurney flap the right angle flap
00:22:50That's on the rear wing that gives a bit of extra downforce makes the air stay attached to the rear wing for longer
00:22:57That will certainly affect the balance and the the way that the back end of Buttons car sticks to the racetrack and
00:23:04That happened a couple of laps ago, but then still down in 14th place
00:23:11Coulthard making no impression on the field now tucked up behind Bernal these arrows and there you see it close enough
00:23:17But in the dirty air you get a bit of understeer and the driver in front in a corner like Rascas will always of course
00:23:24Be on the throttle one car length before you and the acceleration of these cars
00:23:29You're gonna have to try and out break him at the end of the straight
00:23:32And of course you can see it's one man at a time through a lot of these corners and here we see
00:23:37Coulthard is he gonna have a nibble up the inside into to back that would be a brave move running over that gurney flap there
00:23:43Behind Coulthard's car the gurney flap of Buttons Benetton. Well all that David Coulthard can do it. Look how much
00:23:51Hacking them has closed up on Michael Schumacher as they come through on their 12th lap, but all that
00:23:57David Coulthard can do is pressure Bernal the the Brazilian is inexperienced at Formula One
00:24:03This is only his seventh race
00:24:05But he's got a lot of racing miles behind him and he's in the right place to just stay where he is and keep David
00:24:11Coulthard back
00:24:13Schumacher leads and Hagan has done a fastest lap the lead is down to one second and Michael Schumacher is now going to have to get
00:24:20Past Luchano Berti with the yellow flash on his helmet in the blue crossed car
00:24:26He is 20th. They're starting to lap them already on lap 13
00:24:31So that's a good scrap there. That'll be
00:24:35Pannis Raikkonen
00:24:37Frentzen and Della Rosa
00:24:38So you're looking at 10 11 at 12 and 13 with Jensen's button there just in the background
00:24:45That's a very early start
00:24:47Stop for Pannis turns into the pit lane
00:24:51Hopefully we'll have a look and see what it is
00:24:52It's a I'm amazed that he's come in as early as this has he got a problem or it's it's it's definitely an unscheduled
00:25:00stop Mary now why you have a strategy and
00:25:03Problem with the right rear looks like they weren't really expecting him
00:25:06He has come off the track very very quickly. So Pannis then maybe he sensed a puncture. Maybe he's nerfed a barrier of
00:25:13We think it could be a puncture
00:25:15We're hearing from the F1 ITV pit crew
00:25:17But let's see if he carries on sometimes if you've whacked a barrier you go back out hoping it's alright
00:25:22turns out not to be but Hagan and then took three quarters of a second out of
00:25:28Michael Schumacher last time what's happened Hagan has had a very according to the computer a very very slow mid sector
00:25:35And yes, look, he's falling away a lot as some six or seven seconds
00:25:39Oh, hello, there's Hagan and look and that was a Barrichello
00:25:42We watched him so Hagan and then very very slow through the middle part of the previous lap
00:25:47I'd Barrichello, of course up into second place now that's going to make it even stronger for Michael Schumacher
00:25:53Even harder for Mika Hagan and because with two Ferraris in front of him
00:25:59Although Rubens Barrichello will be as intent on winning this race as Michael Schumacher is with Ferrari
00:26:06First and second you can be very sure indeed the team orders will rule
00:26:11And we know what team orders in Ferrari means it means Schumacher wins and he gets the job
00:26:16Well Hagan and was coasting out of the tunnel when we picked him up very late in his problem
00:26:21So whether he's nerfed the barrier where they had some kind of ignition cut
00:26:25We don't know but he lost some seven or eight seconds in the middle of the previous lap
00:26:30And that's why then Barrichello is up to p2, but he's seven seconds behind Michael Schumacher
00:26:36P2 place to lap 14 Schumacher Barrichello seven seconds between the Mika Hagan and two seconds further back
00:26:43It's turning out to be a black black race for the gray and black
00:26:47McLaren team
00:26:51He's ahead of Marquez he's still behind Bernalde and Alonso in the Minardi is an excellent 15th Panis in the pits again
00:26:58So maybe I was right on that
00:27:00He did whack the wall at some stage but Hagan in five seconds slower again in the mid part of the lap
00:27:06So some kind of fuel problem Murray and we think Hagan has pulled out of the race
00:27:11So Hagan and out of the race bad day so far for McLaren who died down the back Hagan and out James
00:27:17What can you tell us? Well, I'm down here a complete surprise his arrival in the pits Steve Hallam
00:27:22His chief engineer was talking to him on the radio. Obviously something to do with the rear suspension
00:27:26They're looking at maybe an ignition possibly a problem, but they were giving him advice on different things. He could try
00:27:31He's hit the barrier. I think yes that they're checking the rear suspension to see if there's any damage
00:27:35He's having problems steering the car
00:27:37I believe they were giving him advice over the radio suddenly arrived and the engines still running so he's still possibly yes
00:27:43They're gonna get him out of it again
00:27:44They think he's okay to continue, but he's saying the car's not handling right and let me tell you you always to the merest
00:27:51Finest degree, you know if the car's not right so Hagan and rejoins the track
00:27:55They had a good old pull around on the suspension. He clearly thinks that in the middle of the racetrack
00:28:00He's just not getting the balance and grip he needs and it's only it must be quite dramatic to make an unscheduled stop
00:28:06Well, yeah, not only that but as you can see David Coulthard is having a real go at Bernal. He's saying to the Brazilian
00:28:12Let me buy let me buy and the Brazilian is saying not on your life. I'm not gonna let you buy
00:28:17I don't have to let you buy
00:28:18We are fighting for track position and I'm going to gain it and now Mika Häkkinen is behind
00:28:24David Coulthard as a result of that long stop on those two delays on the previous back
00:28:29He's 17th David Coulthard is 16th Michael Schumacher and Barry Callow first and second of the places changing there
00:28:37They should came with kidney right and I'm going through right can it's got a problem
00:28:41So past goes Bernal the and cool down then right can I think I just about hear it misfiring or something?
00:28:47from the camera down at the corner there and
00:28:51Really at the end Dave is just gonna have to have a bit of a go at this guy
00:28:54It's now getting to the point where he might as well risk losing a nose or a wheel because he's losing some two and a
00:29:01Half seconds a lap. He's got to clear this arrows
00:29:07As you watch
00:29:09Hollow is yet another retirement into the pits comes the BAR and it is Olivier Pannis
00:29:16So he joins Nick Heidfeld. He joins Montoya. He joins Pannis is Mika Häkkinen gonna be a retiree soon
00:29:24Anyway, we're on lap 16 out of the 78 and into the pits comes the Sauber of Kimi
00:29:30Räikkönen they refuel again putting new tires on they might just as well
00:29:34Now out he will be was running a ninth place. He's down now to last. Yeah, he's getting out of the car
00:29:40I mean, it looks silly that they change the tires and refuel it when you know, there's probably an engine from it
00:29:44It's just procedures an automatic procedure
00:29:47Give it gas give it tires that buys you a few seconds to talk about what the problem is and see if there's a fix
00:29:53but I suspect
00:29:54some kind of engine problem that if I heard the
00:29:56Engine note right when they were over the far side of the track on that camera at the chicane
00:30:01Well to describe the Monaco Grand Prix as a race of tradition
00:30:08Attrition it always is a masterpiece of understatement
00:30:11I mean, it's not at all unknown for only five cars to finish the distance for only three of them to be on the same
00:30:18Lap, it is a real car breaker
00:30:23Is required to have is massive because there are all these corners you are up to a maximum speed of 180 miles an hour
00:30:3220 miles an hour minimum round the Grand Hairpin
00:30:35David Coulthard has still not got past Penalty
00:30:38But he's now moved up to 15th position as a result of the retirements Nick. I felt Montoya
00:30:44Panis Kimi Räikkönen and the Bertie Luciano Bertie is running 18th the last into Casino Square
00:30:51Yeah, and cook that's quicker on the way out. Can he have a nibble down into Miran at Mirabeau and finally launch past?
00:30:57Yeah, I think he's got his best chance now just
00:31:01Breaking nice and light, isn't it?
00:31:02It'd be interesting to see how much fuel they're carrying and he can certainly break every bit as late as cooked
00:31:07I'd cook that is sitting there praying that most of the people in front of him are on a two-stop as his only chance
00:31:13And Mika Hakkinen is in the pits again. I can tell you that you can't see it on the screen
00:31:20Mika Hakkinen is in the pits his race looks as though it is run and as though there is only one McLaren on the
00:31:27Circuit now the one that you're looking at David Coulthard
00:31:31Still of course second in the World Championship the gap between himself and Rubens Barrichello
00:31:38There is Mika Hakkinen and Louise. What's the news you can?
00:31:43What's the news Louise? Well, I'm sitting with Juan Pablo Montoya Murray Juan Pablo your first Grand Prix here short
00:31:49I'm not very sweet either tell us about the accident
00:31:51I just made a mistake when I went back on the power
00:31:54I was running wide in the chicane away
00:31:56Left a bit early when we're back in the power the countersteer up and I hit the curb in the right-hand side and just throw
00:32:02Me to the wall when you lost the lead in Brazil
00:32:04You accepted your fate with a smile if you walk back to the pits here with a face as black as thunder
00:32:08Why were you so angry because you know, I made us a very silly mistake. I shouldn't done but you learn from that
00:32:14Thanks on Pablo. There was a bit of a haroosh in the Williams team incidentally between as you're watching Mika Hakkinen steering wheel off
00:32:22There's a bit of a haroosh at the Williams team because the spare car had originally been allocated to Montoya
00:32:27It was switched to Schumacher
00:32:30David David
00:32:31Coulthard pushing pushing pushing
00:32:33But this is a perfect demonstration of the fact that if you sit on the racing line
00:32:38That speed differential between the cars here is so small that it's virtually impossible to get past Mika Hakkinen retires
00:32:45From the Monaco Grand Prix. Yes. He's a previous winner in
00:32:501998 he was second in 99, but it has not been his luckiest circuit
00:32:54and this is exactly what I was talking about earlier that just about the two slowest men on the racetrack at Bernal D and
00:33:00Coulthard and while Bernal D is watching his mirrors and defending what is
00:33:0414th place
00:33:07He's just losing a bucket load of time his mate Verstappen who he was racing with for a while is now up in 11th place
00:33:12Zooming through the field. He'd almost be better letting Coulthard go
00:33:16Stop the defensive driving and get sucked along by Coulthard to catch the pack in front
00:33:21But right at the moment, he wants to be the man who raced David Coulthard in a McLaren and can't say I blame him
00:33:28But he's not using his brain
00:33:29Yeah, Jos Verstappen was 8th fastest in the warm-up this morning and he started 19th on the grid
00:33:34He's found something now lap 19 out of 78
00:33:38So there's 59 laps still to go Michael Schumacher Ferrari leads Barrichello Ferrari by seven and a half seconds
00:33:45Ralph Schumacher in the Williams is third 20 seconds behind the leader Eddie Irvine in the Jaguars moved up to fourth now
00:33:52That's where he finished last year
00:33:5422 seconds of drift. Trulli is in fifth position in the Jordan Honda 27 seconds behind
00:34:00Jack Villeneuve is in sixth position in the beer are looking good for another World Championship point 28 seconds behind
00:34:07Fisichella 7th for Lacey 8th Frenson 9th and Pedro de la Rosa 2nd Jaguar is 10th
00:34:13so both the Jaguars are in the top 10 places maintaining their improvement as a result of the
00:34:19Massively improved aerodynamic package they have here compared with previous races. Yeah good
00:34:25People doing a good job out there Irvine fourth Trulli fifth Villeneuve sixth Fisichella seventh and that is de la Rosa
00:34:31Yeah, as we talk about both the Jaguars being in the top ten out goes de la Rosa stall the engine, obviously
00:34:40Technical fault de la Rosa knowing that's a smart place to park away from the firing line of the cars
00:34:49Of course that moves David Coulthard up a place to 14th
00:34:52But it boosts but all the up to 13th and still the Scotsman cannot get past the Brazilian
00:34:58up the Beau Rivage
00:35:01turns left at the
00:35:03Third gear 85 miles an hour. It's a long long corner to the right hander at the top of the hill at Casino Square
00:35:14Building up to and
00:35:17Coulthard looks again
00:35:19Shots the door. Yeah, but now he's demonstrated quite clearly there. He will just turn into that corner
00:35:24but that's that I'm sure a few laps ago and he just can't you know, he looks like he
00:35:32yeah, and a blue flag being waved there for the
00:35:36unless the course direct the race director has
00:35:41instructed that then
00:35:43He he should he should not be receiving the blue flag. They're racing for position
00:35:48yeah, they're
00:35:50Fighting for track position as you pointed out already and Bernalde is perfectly entitled to go wherever he likes provided
00:35:56He doesn't weave consistently and stop Coulthard getting past
00:35:59He doesn't have to do that here
00:36:00The marshal was out of order unless as you would suggest he may have had direct instruction from Charlie Whiting that the race director
00:36:08There's a line on the computer for car 17 to receive a wave blue flag, but that is Raikkonen and not
00:36:15And not Bernalde, so I imagine that the marshals waved it at the wrong car
00:36:20But you know you tell me where the numbers are on these cars
00:36:23In which case Raikkonen has got back on the track after that problem that we saw earlier on he's four laps down already
00:36:31There are effectively 14 cars left in this race on the same lap of which
00:36:3714th and last is David Coulthard who's got past Marquez in the Minardi Berti in the Prostella Rosa out of the race in the
00:36:46Jaguar, I thought Kimi Raikkonen was out Mika Hakkinen certainly is Olivier Panis certainly is in the BAR
00:36:53Montoya is and Nick Heidfeldt is so not a good race for Salva so far
00:36:58Not a good race for Williams not a good race for BARR a terrible race for McLaren
00:37:04Who are so strong in the Constructors Championship
00:37:07McLaren were only 18 points behind
00:37:11In the Constructors Championship and at the present moment
00:37:14Ferrari are on a possible 14 World Championship points in the Constructors Contest
00:37:20Compared with McLaren with nobody in the first six
00:37:24So we're looking at the possibility of Ferrari striding away in the Constructors Championship
00:37:30Of course
00:37:31Michael Schumacher extending his lead over David Coulthard if he finishes where he is in first place
00:37:37We're far from finished here at Monaco, but we're leaving temporarily now
00:39:31Oh
00:39:56So we're on lap 24 now out of 78
00:40:00And the mice are getting at the machinery
00:40:02There's been quite a few retirements Nick Heidfeldt is out in the Salva
00:40:07Montoya is out in the Williams Panis in the BARR Mika Hakkinen has retired a previous race winner here at Monte Carlo
00:40:16Retired the McLaren Pedro de la Rosa has stopped the second Jaguar when he was in the top ten
00:40:22He's talking to the swimming pool area
00:40:24Kimi Raikkonen is still staggering round in the second Salva not a good race for the Swiss team
00:40:29But he's four laps behind
00:40:31Effectively, there are 16 cars and drivers out of the 22 who started of whom the last is Luciano Berti in the prostitute
00:40:40He's been lapped. Taso Marquez in the European Minardi has been lapped
00:40:44He's 15. David Coulthard still still still after all these laps hasn't been able to get past Enrique
00:40:52He's in the 14th place top 10 Michael Schumacher Barry Keller Ralph Schumacher
00:40:57In the Irvine a magnificent fourth in the Jaguar trolley fifth fielder six
00:41:02Then it's busy Keller a Lacey
00:41:04Frenson and Verstappen
00:41:05Yeah
00:41:06The sadness is cool does losing three seconds a lap now stuck behind Bernoulli the pair of them
00:41:11Still the slowest cars on the racetrack
00:41:14He just cannot claim and the irony of that Murray is cool does the next man to be laps as soon as Schumacher arrived
00:41:21The blue flags will be waving. He'll have to leap out of the way
00:41:23Otherwise, he'll get a stop and go but that's when he most that's probably his best chance of launching past his arrows
00:41:29Which appears we had a break just late enough to prevent cool starts getting anywhere near passing
00:41:35And there is Michael Schumacher coming in to lap Coulthard. Yeah
00:41:39It's only about four or five seconds between them on the track
00:41:43There is 74 seconds between them in terms of time. So Bernoulli who is in 13th place
00:41:51Coulthard who is in 14th place the next one round the corner you'll see his race leader areas Michael Schumacher
00:41:57Got an enormous lead and basically what Michael Schumacher has got to do now is keep it going because he's
00:42:0514 seconds ahead of his teammate Rubens Barrichello who will be a buffer a
00:42:10Protector from anybody who could attack from behind but since Ralph Schumacher third in the Williams BMW
00:42:17Is only lapping at the same speed as Rubens Barrichello and is 11 seconds behind the second Ferrari
00:42:23I don't think Michael Schumacher's got anything to worry about except reliability
00:42:29And anything can happen
00:42:31Eddie Irvine then in fourth place. You're still watching Bernoulli 14th. Sorry 13th now Coulthard 14th
00:42:37But Irvine up there in fourth probably having Jaguar's strongest ever right almost certainly Jaguar's strongest ever race since they came into Formula 1 Murray
00:42:45Yeah, it's good good to see Niki Lauda now in charge of the whole
00:42:51Premier product group and that is Luciano Berti who has stopped at Sandoval
00:42:56There is the statue of the Williams Bugatti in the background. I was telling you about let's see what happened to Luciano Berti
00:43:02Well, it just stops turns left. He's obviously got a mechanical problem
00:43:06And that he had a bizarre accident there, didn't he?
00:43:11On Saturday when his brakes found totally ended up
00:43:13I'm gonna bury it in the tire so as not to run underneath a breakdown truck a long way down that escape road
00:43:19So that is not Luciano Berti's favorite corner
00:43:25Listlessly waving the blue flag
00:43:29Of his own initiative and full Coulthard goes for it now
00:43:33He's gonna have to nerf him off. That's his only chance
00:43:36David's
00:43:38Darker side of me, but I'm afraid we all think the same way
00:43:40He's got to clear the arrows the arrows has demonstrated quite clearly
00:43:44It will just turn across his nose and I have to nerf it as his only chance
00:43:48I bet he wish he got a slightly longer point on that nose and just give him a little
00:43:52Kiss into one of these corners because he's got a clear past it
00:43:55Yeah, and even if he does that the gap between himself and the next bloke down the line is Fernando Alonso
00:44:03Incidentally the European Minardi driver Arnie's there he goes
00:44:08David Coulthard and Michael Schumacher together and Schumacher has now lacked David Coulthard in his closing up on
00:44:16I think we've got a pretty disgruntled Coulthard there because he didn't need to let Schumacher go that early
00:44:21That's giving a lot of help a lot of respect, but he needed to be right there when
00:44:26Schumacher passed the arrows so for me it was his best shot to pass the arrows now
00:44:31He's got a better running, but he'd no way can I break him into Sainte-Devote?
00:44:34I don't think Martin, you know, David Coulthard as a man and a friend and a colleague
00:44:41What will be his mindset now despair or determination
00:44:44I think you'd be angry angry at whatever happened on the start line angry to see Michael Schumacher
00:44:49Just a rub a lot of salt in the wounds Louise. What can you tell us?
00:44:52I'm sitting with Mika Hakkinen. He's just arrived back in the paddock
00:44:55Mika, was it a car problem? Did you hit the barrier? Can you tell us what happened?
00:44:59I didn't hit any barrier anything. It was just pulling very heavily on the right and what it was doing that it was
00:45:06Too risky to continue, you know in acceleration come out the corner went on the gas
00:45:10Some reason pulled on the right, but the team is checking it what it is extremely unusual problem. You see
00:45:18Turning into a nightmare day for McLaren. What's the best that David can hope for today?
00:45:23score points
00:45:24Thanks very much
00:45:26It could be pulling right if with a differential problem or drive shaft problem
00:45:31If he's if it's only pulling right on the power, then it's something in the powertrain
00:45:35Clearly, but as Mike as Mika said, that's an extremely unusual problem
00:45:39Yeah, now it's it's the fifth race that Mika Hakkinen has failed to finish this year
00:45:45He didn't finish in Australia in Brazil in Spain in Austria now. He hasn't finished at Monaco
00:45:51He hasn't been on a podium this year
00:45:54He's only had a fourth place at Imola and the sixth place in Malaysia
00:46:00So it's looking bad for Mika Hakkinen Ron Dennis, of course
00:46:03The team boss at McLaren has consistently said there are no team orders at McLaren and there aren't going to be until it is
00:46:10Mathematically impossible for one of our drivers to win the championship then he will defer to the other
00:46:16Well, David Coulthard is a long way ahead of Hakkinen
00:46:20It looks as though that might start to happen
00:46:23But anyway, James Allen has news
00:46:26We heard Mika there saying it's an unusual problem that he has with the steering
00:46:29But what's extremely unusual is that Olivier Pannis has retired with the same thing
00:46:34I don't know if it's anything to do with these tires
00:46:36They've got this year or what's going on
00:46:38But both Olivia Pannis and Mika Hakkinen had weird steering problems that put them out of the race very early on
00:46:43Well Michelin were looking much better here than they have in
00:46:47Most of the races in the past and that's a comment and not a criticism because of the costly one
00:46:53At the San Marino Grand Prix with Ralph Schumacher David Coulthard still tucked up behind Bernalde as we look back down the track to see
00:47:00the next one now meantime
00:47:03Heights Harold Frentzen has got the message. We haven't heard much about him. He's in the ninth position behind John Lacey
00:47:10He's just made the fastest lap of the race he's going very quickly indeed in the Jordan Honda
00:47:17But Schumacher still leads. In fact, he's extending his lead consistently over Rubens Barrichello
00:47:23It's now 13 seconds and Ralph Schumacher is lapping quicker than the second Ferrari
00:47:29He's closed up a bit to within 12 seconds of Rubens Barrichello's second Eddie Irvine still fourth
00:47:35Giano Trulli in the York Jordan Honda fifth and Jack Villeneuve in the BAR Honda sixth
00:47:41the battle continues between BAR and
00:47:46Jordan as
00:47:48Poor David Coulthard continues to try. Yeah
00:47:52He really I think he's missed his best shot when Schumacher came up
00:47:55He'll have to try and make better use of Barrichello. He'll be homing in on them next
00:47:58What is that all about with Frentzen? He's down in ninth place
00:48:01He's just from nowhere pulled the lap out of the bag that's quicker than the leader Michael Schumacher
00:48:07Eddie Jordan be going mad when he sees that he's
00:48:10Why why that lap? Why didn't you do before? What are you doing cruising around if the cars that fast?
00:48:16He's just done another 21 5 on that lap as well
00:48:19So just bizarre brain clearly not in gear through the early part of the Grand Prix
00:48:25gaining on
00:48:26John a Lacey at the rate of about four tenths of a second. You may see the frost in front of you
00:48:31I was saying that the cross hadn't been going as well, but they have this new aerodynamic
00:48:36Packaging and actually John a Lacey is running in eighth position at the present moment
00:48:41The highest he's finished this season is a position at Brazil and there's still going to be some retirements in this race
00:48:47We're not even at half distance yet. We're on lap 30 out of 78
00:48:52We've got another nine laps before there before we've reached the 50% mark as we look down and Frenson being
00:49:00sorry, truly in fifth place being pursued by Villeneuve and
00:49:05Fissy Keller is in sixth position
00:49:07Another thing in this race and this season is the fact that Fissy Keller and
00:49:14Together in the Benetton team a lot of people and I think I was actually one of them were expecting
00:49:20Jenson Button to show Fissy Keller on the way this season that hasn't happened at all
00:49:25And Giancarlo Fissy Keller in a car which certainly hasn't got the performance of a lot of the others in front
00:49:31Has done a terrific job this season. He's refused to admit that things can't go well. He got a point in Brazil
00:49:38He's finished in a lot of races, but now look at him the young Italian is in seventh position
00:49:45This is a man, of course who has led a Grand Prix
00:49:48He led the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim when he was with the Jordan team
00:49:53Giancarlo Fissy Keller and
00:49:55That was in
00:49:571997 as we come back again to the oh, no, we don't we come back to Ralph Schumacher
00:50:03Third position we haven't seen much of the Williams BMW. This is the San Marino Grand Prix winner the highest
00:50:10Michelin-tied the competitor in the Monaco Grand Prix and he is 25 seconds behind
00:50:18Now Fissy Keller third here, of course last year Mary does tend to be a Monaco specialist as well
00:50:23Giancarlo always gone very well around here and up there in seventh place at the moment as you say and keeping Villeneuve
00:50:30Very much in his sights. Who's that? That's a Jordan. That's a Jordan
00:50:35Now, let's have a look at it
00:50:37Out
00:50:39Out he leaps and it's Jarno Trulli
00:50:42Out go the fire extinguishers
00:50:44Jarno Trulli and he was the highest Jordan. He was in seventh position just off the leaderboard now
00:50:51Here's a replay. Yeah, it's an oil fire. So a piston ring or something like that or an oil line blown off
00:50:58Probably I would suspect more likely an oil line or something off under the engine cover
00:51:04Catching fire on the exhaust pipe
00:51:05So quite clearly then truly out of the race and he had the old rocket propel thighs
00:51:11They're straight out of the cockpit and who can blame him?
00:51:14he will have seen that great gout of flame in his mirrors back again to
00:51:19Continuation point in the Monaco Grand Prix. No laughing matter for David Coulthard
00:51:24He will be grimly determined and utterly utterly frustrated as they come out of the rest
00:51:32Up into what is laughingly called the finishing straight here, but which is actually a long long shallow curve
00:51:38And this is heights Harold Frentzen seeing what happened to his teammate Jarno Trulli
00:51:44I don't know whether he'll have time to realize that it was a Jordan his teammate hidden in that fire extinguisher
00:51:51foam and cloud
00:51:53so
00:51:54Ferrari leads
00:51:56Ferrari second Williams BMW third
00:52:00And David Coulthard slows right down and let's Rubens Barrichello past
00:52:08I think Coulthard's given up on the idea of any points today because he's being overly nice to the leaders
00:52:14I mean I respect that because
00:52:15He knows what it's like to be leading a Grand Prix and then or up the sharp end of a Grand Prix and have been slowed
00:52:21down by
00:52:21Backmarkers, but he really is being but you know
00:52:24It does say on the computer screen the blue flags are waving from if you pass three of them
00:52:28You get a stop-and-go penalty. So he knows he has to be courteous
00:52:32I think he's probably being a touch more courteous than he really needs me. Well, you said Martin that
00:52:38David Coulthard's next opportunity to attack Bernalde
00:52:42Hopefully successfully from his point of view would be when Rubens Barrichello came up to laugh at me
00:52:48Let Barrichello through he dropped back Bernalde is still ahead. Here's a replay
00:52:52Yeah, you see he needs to he needs to let the next one ease his way through
00:52:58Before and just to the tuck in behind him and then pick up the pieces because Bernalde is being quite kind to and that that's DC's
00:53:05Best opportunity who's next down there a Ralph Schumacher
00:53:07But some 11 seconds away, but this pair are lapping three to four seconds a lap slow sometimes
00:53:13So Ralph will be here anytime soon and what of course David Coulthard is doing now is pursuing the adage never
00:53:20Never give up as we look at Eddie Irvine alone on the track five seconds behind Ralph Schumacher
00:53:28nine seconds ahead of
00:53:32Maintaining that fourth position
00:53:36Three possible World Championship toys
00:53:38Yeah, you saw Ralph just coming in to the Lowe's hairpin as this pair were disappearing out
00:53:44So Ralph Schumacher then homing in to lap them, too
00:53:48Just have him off David. I want to see these guys come through the field. We want to see some action
00:53:52We don't want to see just blocking and people going slowly in the back of the field
00:53:57Well meantime here are the top ten. You know that Schumacher's leading. You know that Barrichello is second
00:54:04So that's first for Ferrari second Ferrari gap 17 seconds Ralph Schumacher is
00:54:10Closing up a bit on Rubens Barrichello. He's actually taking a second out of his lead. He's now in ninth place and
00:54:17One of the Williams team said to me before the race began the hotter it is here the better our Michelin tires are going to
00:54:24Like it. It's 38 degrees here. Don't know what it is in England and the other countries
00:54:29We're talking to but we're leaving Monaco for a break. We'll be back of course
00:54:47Oh
00:55:17Oh
00:55:47Oh
00:56:17Oh
00:56:19Oh
00:56:21Oh
00:56:23Oh
00:56:25Oh
00:56:45And he's seven just about half distance of the 78 lap Monaco
00:56:51And Jack Carlo Fisichella has retained his sixth place in the Benetton
00:56:57There you see it says a replay of him running wide at Sandoval
00:57:01he hits the pitch the barrier first of all with the left and then the
00:57:05rear and then the left front
00:57:07Yeah
00:57:07and he does survive that little skirmish because he went in a nice and square on into the tires and
00:57:14The front end touching was not too bad either and again quite square
00:57:17so Fisichella kept the engine running the anti-stall working nicely for him and
00:57:23Survived for another day in sixth place and Kulthar then still steering in the back of that arrows as well
00:57:28Schumacher third place man comes through to Lapin meanwhile Villeneuve on the move now in fifth place with a new fastest lap
00:57:35And once again David being extremely courteous. Yeah, David is being hyper polite. It's almost as though
00:57:42I mean, this is a ludicrous statement
00:57:44It's almost as though he's sort of closing up to Bernalde and then dropping back a bit to have the pleasure of recatching it
00:57:50Yeah, hang on a minute, though
00:57:51Actually this time around now he is tucked up the rear wing of the Williams and he might might just get his chance
00:57:57This time around hopefully home back in on that the TV directors
00:58:00Yeah
00:58:01He managed to touch straight back in behind Ralph and Ralph was a little bit too far away to immediately be wanting to pass
00:58:07Bernalde so maybe this time around it'll work out lap 38 race order Ferrari Ferrari
00:58:14Schumacher Barrichello gap 14 seconds Williams BMW third and there are Bernalde and
00:58:20Kulthar
00:58:22Schumacher is pulling away from both of them so David's missed his opportunity
00:58:26Unless he can get it here and serve the Vought which I very much doubt indeed
00:58:29He does not do so because Bernalde again tucks in tight
00:58:34Cool father's got the power and there is Schumacher of the swimming pool section
00:58:40Lapping Bernalde who immediately moves back ahead and in front of David Kulthar's McLaren half-distance lap. We're on now
00:58:49If I know David, I don't think he's got much interest at the moment. He's certainly not attacking
00:58:53We've seen him go around the inside outside of Michael Schumacher often as he pleases
00:58:58Today I think whatever happened on the start line. It's pretty much put him in the wrong frame of mind any dialogue between him
00:59:05And the pit lane do you think?
00:59:07No, I mean, there's nothing they could do
00:59:09They can't go down to arrows and say let our man through because they're racing for position
00:59:12Of course, they wouldn't dream of doing that, but now I think he's out there on his own
00:59:16He'll be still probably I don't know 20 laps away from his stop
00:59:20So we're not even half distance in the race yet
00:59:22But he needed to be moving earlier if he wanted a chance of some points now James Allen's in the pits
00:59:27Yeah, I'm standing behind the McLaren timing wall and they've been thinking exactly the same way as you guys have been thinking if he can
00:59:33Tuck himself up behind the leaders as they come through to to pass
00:59:36Maybe he can dive through on the inside of an Audi and every time he's failed to do that. They've punched the desk
00:59:40There's very little dialogue actually going on generally shoulders are down a little bit on this timing wall as you can imagine
00:59:45There's very little they can do. It's enormous. I can feel their frustration. It's very intense new lap record for Michael Schumacher
00:59:54Demonstrating how much he's in charge of this race previously was
01:00:00One minute 21 point five seven one and that's a speed
01:00:06Michael Schumacher is just gone round a second quicker
01:00:127-7
01:00:14So they are lapping at well over 93 94 miles an hour
01:00:19Just think about that very few of us do 93 or 94 miles an hour during the course of a year's motoring here
01:00:27They are averaging it around this
01:00:302.1
01:00:32With all its corners twist turns and gradient now Schumacher
01:00:36Now cool side rather is tucked up behind Irvine fourth place man's lapped him. Can he use Irvine to get past the arrows?
01:00:44So we'll have to wait and see pit stop getting ready then for Benetton
01:00:48We know both Benetton's are in the race, of course button in 10th and physically in six
01:00:53So we don't know which one's coming in first. Well, I said David Cooper must never ever give up and he won't do so
01:01:00He may be in 13th place
01:01:03But if he could just get past some more people and get up into sixth position that would give him one world championship point
01:01:10And well a world championship has been won in the past by half a point
01:01:161984 when Niki Lauda beat Alain Prost by just half a point because paradoxically
01:01:24Prost in winning the Monaco Grand Prix here in 1984 and look how close David
01:01:30Coupard is now frost in winning the Monaco Grand Prix here when it was cut short because of the weather
01:01:39Only got half a world championship point and that was what decided that year's championship
01:01:44So if David Coulthard could get with just one point it would be some consolation to him
01:01:49not much compared with the 10 that he might have got and he got away in pole position into Sainte-Devote the first corner of the
01:01:5717 corner
01:02:03Out of the tunnel for the 41st time
01:02:08Remember, we haven't had any leaders coming for their pit stops yet. Michael Schumacher
01:02:13I would expect to come in or whatever what fuel load he's got, but it's not going to be until after
01:02:1950 and I would imagine that Schumacher has probably been driving a pretty conservative race by his
01:02:26Standards, even though he's put up the fastest lap of the race
01:02:29He's been having an iron grip on it the whole time and he may therefore be coming in for fuel and tires
01:02:37But he had originally planned Ross Brawn the Ferrari
01:02:41Tactician and technical director of the Maranello concern will be sitting on the pit lane
01:02:48Gantry watching everything like a hawk with John took the Ferrari team manager alongside him
01:02:54They will be planning and watching that is John a lazy going through pursued by heights Harold Frentzen
01:02:59Maybe that's what's waking heights Harold Frentzen up Martin. He's now in eighth place
01:03:05You can see how close he is to John a Lacey's
01:03:09Ferrari power crossed
01:03:11Second a lap slower now despite a lower fuel load than he did when he said that at that time a new lap record
01:03:18Seven eight or nine laps ago, but a Lacey then having a very good race up there in seven
01:03:23So we've got some unusual players. We haven't seen much of them Irvine in for a Lacey up in seventh
01:03:29That's very nice to see
01:03:30So, how are the teams doing Ferrari doing very well
01:03:34Thank you first and second McLaren doing terribly hacking and out of the race and David Cooper down in 13th place
01:03:41seven positions off the points
01:03:43Williams well reasonable Ralph Schumacher is in a fine third place Montoya is out of the race
01:03:49Jaguar very good indeed because they get to score World Championship points
01:03:54Looks as though they could do so in this race if any Irvine repeats his success of last year in finishing fourth Martin
01:04:00Yeah, I'm just gonna take you through that on board stuff Mary, but hey, we're back on board again
01:04:04So you you lump the curb there you have to hook up with that curve in the second part of the swimming pool
01:04:08You break much earlier for Rascals
01:04:10You just cruise in there really if you break late and down shift you lose the back of the car
01:04:14It's so easy just to turn in a fraction and slap the barriers through these corners and it almost catches you by surprise
01:04:21You don't because the rear of the car is wider than the front as you're turning through there often
01:04:26You just whack them as you go through you
01:04:29Okay, and it just pushes the car around or rips the suspension off
01:04:33Vasanay coming up
01:04:3585 miles an hour third gear into Casino Square with the casino itself on the right as
01:04:41Frentzen chases a Lacey down the hill towards the Mirabeau turn second gear 30 miles an hour
01:04:48Continuing down to the slowest corner on the track the grand hairpin 20 miles an hour
01:04:53Into the double right-hander about 50 miles an hour at each of them on the apex the Portier is where Ayrton Senna
01:05:00Retired when he thumped the barrier in 1988 and went off to his apartment
01:05:06Into the tunnel and out of it at 180 miles an hour and that's really how dark it looks when you're in the car
01:05:12Believe me. It is amazing, but
01:05:14Michael Schumacher's just done a new
