00:00:28And this is where, again, we'll see the supreme ability and race craft of Michael Schumacher.
00:00:35Because he has this ability that Senna had.
00:00:38I know I'm continually making comparisons between the two of them,
00:00:41because they're two of the greatest of getting through traffic where others can't.
00:00:45Yes, Trulli's been very cautious around the yellow flags,
00:00:48and that's enabled the pack behind them to close up by three or four seconds.
00:00:53And Michael Schumacher now with a 31-second lead.
00:00:56So Trulli has been extra cautious through those yellow flags.
00:01:00James, what can you tell us?
00:01:02Martin, we're not a million miles away from a Michael Schumacher pit stop, I don't think.
00:01:05He was getting through that gaggle, which included Verstappen, Diniers, Filner, Zonta and Eiffel.
00:01:09He's carving through them at the moment like a hot knife through butter.
00:01:12Verstappen's the next one in his sight.
00:01:14And I would reckon they're all very close together on the road,
00:01:16only about three or four seconds separating the whole five cars.
00:01:19Once he's through there, it's probably a pretty good time to be thinking about making a stop.
00:01:23I'm not at all surprised, as you were saying before,
00:01:25if McLaren didn't just bring in perhaps Hakkinen at roughly the same time
00:01:29to try and give him some sort of opportunity to make an impression on this motor race.
00:01:32But Ferrari's starting to look as though they're getting ready.
00:01:34Well, we'll wait and see. Thank you, James.
00:01:36Lap 34 out of 78.
00:01:39Michael Schumacher leading by 31 seconds.
00:01:42Very close behind him. You're looking at it now.
00:01:44Trulli, Coulthard, then Frentzen and Hakkinen.
00:01:49Sixth position is still Ralf Schumacher.
00:01:51No changes from the start of the race.
00:01:53Rubens Barrichello has moved up to seventh position
00:01:57as a result of a Lacey gag out.
00:01:59Fisichella's now up to eighth.
00:02:01Eddie Irvine to ninth.
00:02:03So the Jaguar is in the top ten.
00:02:05Michael Schumacher is not slowing at all.
00:02:08He's made yet another fastest lap.
00:02:11Just six-tenths of a second off Micah Hakkinen's fastest lap time last year.
00:02:16A time of 1 minute 22.8.
00:02:19And as I said earlier on, I think he's now in a strong enough position
00:02:24to come in and make that stop and still get out in the lead
00:02:28having taken on more fuel and fresh tyres and wheels.
00:02:32As we look at Johnny Herbert in the Jaguar.
00:02:36He's down in 15th position. He's been lapped.
00:02:38So have Jacques Villeneuve, who's 12th,
00:02:41Riccardo Zonta, who is 13th,
00:02:43Nick Heidfeldt, who is in 14th position.
00:02:46And 15 are left out of the 22 who started.
00:02:49And there are going to be more retirements yet from this race, I forecast.
00:02:54Because Michael Schumacher, that you look at now,
00:02:57has just lapped Jos Verstappen in the arrows behind him,
00:03:01who is in 11th position.
00:03:04And he's coming up now very close to Micah Salo.
00:03:08I think, yes, Micah Salo is still in 10th position in the Sauber.
00:03:13Eddie Irvine is on a run now.
00:03:16He's just gone through the first sector fastest of all in that race.
00:03:20And it's heartening to realise that Jaguar are actually making progress with the car.
00:03:26They've got a new management structure.
00:03:28They've been doing an enormous amount of work on the engine with Cosworth
00:03:32and with the car itself.
00:03:34And it is starting to pay dividends.
00:03:36But they are very honest and say,
00:03:38we know we've still got a long, long way to go.
00:03:42And first of all, we need a wind tunnel,
00:03:44and that's probably a couple of years down the road.
00:03:47So there's a long furrow to plough,
00:03:49but it's nice to see them in Formula 1.
00:03:52Michael Schumacher leading lap 36.
00:03:55Yes, the Jordan and McLaren mechanics will be warming up their muscles
00:03:58and getting ready because their job this afternoon is going to be,
00:04:01as ever these days, really absolutely critical.
00:04:04Because if they do a good job, they can keep their man in front
00:04:07or leapfrog their man, whichever car they're working on.
00:04:10And a half a second or a second is going to make all the difference on the pit stop.
00:04:14Now, I was talking about Eddie Irvine.
00:04:16He is in ninth position of the Jaguar.
00:04:19And he's able to make that charge, not only because the car will do it,
00:04:23but because there is a four-second gap between him and Fisichella.
00:04:27So in comparative terms, Eddie Irvine's got a clear bit of track in front of him.
00:04:31That's a slow McLaren there, Murray.
00:04:33I don't know. I think it's Hakkinen.
00:04:35It's a slow McLaren. Lost a lot of speed as he's cruising through.
00:04:39Yes, look, Barrichello now up behind him.
00:04:41So Hakkinen limping. No sign of any smoke or anything like that.
00:04:44But clearly, Hakkinen, he'll have to pull right now.
00:04:47He'll have to let them through in the tunnel. It's so dangerous to hold your line.
00:04:50He doesn't do that.
00:04:52And, oh, Fisichella is going to have a face full of McLaren.
00:04:55But Micka staying on the inside there.
00:04:58And clearly some kind of major problem for Micka Hakkinen,
00:05:01who was running in fifth position.
00:05:04Well, Micka Hakkinen won this race in 1998,
00:05:07and he was second last year.
00:05:09But I can remember a lot of very unhappy Monaco's for him,
00:05:13and it looks as though this is going to be another one.
00:05:16But, uh...
00:05:18So he's slipping down through the field.
00:05:20He was in fifth position. He's been passed by Ralfs.
00:05:23Coulthard's got a seriously good run.
00:05:26Don't lose your front wing and don't hit the barrier.
00:05:29He had to get on the brakes for a second time there, did Coulthard.
00:05:32That's cost him dearly. He got so close to the back of Fisichella.
00:05:35I assume Fisichella got out of shape in the last corner.
00:05:37This is Coulthard so nearly losing his wing.
00:05:40There was a shunt there in a Renault Clio race or something earlier on.
00:05:44That's what all the cement dust is down there.
00:05:46It's very slippery.
00:05:47Sorry to interrupt you, Martin.
00:05:48Micka Hakkinen in the pits.
00:05:50You saw the tires and wheels being replaced, but they always do that.
00:05:54And I'm sure he didn't come in for that reason.
00:05:57There's a Jordan slowing as well now. Which one is it?
00:06:00Is it Jarno Trulli or is it Heinz-Harald Frentzen?
00:06:02Trulli. It's Trulli.

00:06:04So this race is now on lap 37 really coming alight.
00:06:09Michael Schumacher out on his own,
00:06:11but it looks as though with Micka Hakkinen possibly out of the race,
00:06:15Ron Dennis in the earphones on the left
00:06:18is looking very concerned as he leans over the car.
00:06:21And there is Jarno Trulli running wide.
00:06:24And you see Ralph Schumacher in the Williams passing him.
00:06:27So Frentzen's passed him, David Coulthard's passed him.
00:06:31It must mean that David Coulthard in the McLaren is up into second place,
00:06:36that Frentzen is up into third place,
00:06:38that Ralph Schumacher is up into fourth position,
00:06:40that Rubens Barrichello is not just in the points,
00:06:43but he's in fifth position,
00:06:44and that Pitti Keller is in sixth place.
00:06:47Hakkinen is leaving the pits,
00:06:49so whatever they were fiddling around with under the cover of the car
00:06:54or in the footwell, they've managed to...
00:06:56Well, maybe.
00:06:57Oh, and that's Schumacher in the barrier.
00:06:59That was Schumacher.
00:07:00I thought I could hear something funny from Hakkinen's car.
00:07:03It was Ralph Schumacher clattering the barrier,
00:07:05and yet again, a wheel just relatively easily falling off the car.
00:07:10Here he comes.
00:07:11Look, he's been slightly unsighted really by Micka coming out of the pit lane.
00:07:14Not Micka's fault at all.
00:07:15Just gone too deep into Sandevoort.
00:07:17And as soon as you get up in the grey there,
00:07:19you're going straight into the tyre barrier.
00:07:21So now you're looking at second-placed man Coulthard
00:07:24and third-placed man Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:07:26Now we'll see what kind of pace Coulthard has got.
00:07:30In comes Jarno Trulli.
00:07:32We saw him touring on the race which looked so good for Jordan
00:07:36is suddenly looking not good at all.
00:07:38That is Ralph Schumacher in the background,
00:07:40just yards away from where he lives,
00:07:44removing his helmet as Jarno Trulli's Jordan is wheeled away.
00:07:49Now we're on lap 39, and here is the totally changed race situation,
00:07:54except for the fact that Michael Schumacher is leading it.
00:07:57He's 37 seconds ahead of David Coulthard,
00:08:01who has got Heinz-Harald Frentzen about a second behind him in third place.
00:08:05Fourth was Ralph Schumacher, but it's now Rubens Barrichello.
00:08:09So two Ferraris in the top four,
00:08:11looking very good for Constructors' Championship points,
00:08:14and David Coulthard is now the fastest man on the track.
00:08:17Yeah, we were right about that.
00:08:18He's just in 22.3.
00:08:20That's six tenths faster than Michael Schumacher's best lap so far this afternoon.
00:08:25And that's the first time he's been released,
00:08:27basically, with the Sinclair track ahead of him.
00:08:30You know, whack it in the barriers, David,
00:08:32because you're 36 seconds behind.
00:08:34It's going to be so difficult to put Schumacher
00:08:36under any kind of pressure from so far behind,
00:08:40but he's got to do it, he's got to keep going,
00:08:42and it's probably easy to keep your concentration in that situation,
00:08:44but Coulthard now absolutely on a charge.
00:08:47Yeah, David has taken so much stick in recent times
00:08:52in comparison with Micah Hacken,
00:08:54which I never thought was justified.
00:08:56He's about 38 Grand Prix less experienced than the Finn,
00:09:02and that is over two years,
00:09:04and David always says,
00:09:05I'm still comparatively young, I've got a lot of experience now,
00:09:08I've got a lot to come,
00:09:09and I believe I can win the World Championship.
00:09:12I believe he can too,
00:09:13but Michael Schumacher, that we are looking at now,
00:09:16is on his 40th lap.
00:09:18He's still got to come in.
00:09:20No one has come in amongst the leaders for a fueling stop.
00:09:25We've had Micah Hacken in with a problem,
00:09:27we've had Johnny Herbert in,
00:09:28we've had Jarno Trulli come in to retire,
00:09:31and there are now just 14 people left of the 22 who started.
00:09:37Something flicked out of the back of the Ferrari,
00:09:39but I would assume it's just debris that Michael Schumacher ran over,
00:09:42as Kluger does another new fastest lap of the race,
00:09:45some 1.8 seconds faster than Michael Schumacher,
00:09:49and the gap's beginning to come down,
00:09:51but it's still some 34 seconds.
00:09:54And the thing that they all have to watch out for now,
00:09:56we have to watch out for,
00:09:58is very quick news from James Allen.
00:10:01Yeah, very quickly.
00:10:02That certainly added an edge to the afternoon,
00:10:04as far as Ferrari are concerned.
00:10:05They're certainly sitting up and paying attention now,
00:10:07and as I say, Schumacher not a million miles away from the start.
00:10:09Some speculation just for you on the Hacken situation.
00:10:12We saw him lifting the top of the bodywork off when he came in.
00:10:15They seem to be looking at the brakes,
00:10:16particularly at the brake pedal,
00:10:17as if maybe there's some sort of problem with that.
00:10:19Thanks, James.
00:10:20Well, I was saying that what they need to look out for now
00:10:23is debris on the track,
00:10:25because that debris will be carbon fibre.
00:10:28It breaks with a razor edge,
00:10:30and you've only got to get a little bit of it in a tar carcass,
00:10:33and it can slice it and cause a puncture.
00:10:36So, Michael Schumacher leading.
00:10:39There is David Coulthard,
00:10:41who's reduced the gap to 34 seconds.
00:10:44He's lapping now a second faster than Michael Schumacher,
00:10:48who has got this enormous cushion of 30 seconds.
00:10:51And Heinz-Harald Frentzen is dropping back in third position,
00:10:55with Rubens Barrichello in fourth place,
00:10:57catching the Jordan.
00:10:59It's all coming alight now,
00:11:00and Fisichella is in fifth position in the Benetton.
00:11:03He's lapping slower than Barrichello.
00:11:05Eddie Irvine is now in the points.
00:11:08I say that again.
00:11:10Eddie Irvine's Jaguar is in the points.
00:11:13His teammate, Johnny Herbert,
00:11:15is down in 13th position, having been lapped.
00:11:18And I know everybody in Britain
00:11:20and in many places all around the world
00:11:22who are Jaguar enthusiasts
00:11:24want to see the Leaping Cat do as well in Formula 1
00:11:28as it did in world sports car racing.
00:11:30And we'll be hoping that Eddie Irvine can stay there
00:11:33to get a first world championship point for Jordan
00:11:36and the first for himself this year.
00:11:38Don't be confused by Hakanen there,
00:11:40back in more or less the pack he was running in.
00:11:42He's now a lap down after that lengthy stop.
00:11:45So Hakanen, more or less, as I say,
00:11:47rejoining in his original position, but one lap down.
00:11:50Yeah, and going extremely quickly.
00:11:53There's obviously nothing wrong mechanically with the car at the moment
00:11:56that affects his performance,
00:11:58because he's just gone through the first sector of the lap
00:12:01faster than anyone has been in the race.
00:12:03And Ralf Schumacher, whose face we saw contorted with pain
00:12:06when he took his helmet off,
00:12:08seems to have hurt his leg.
00:12:10He was limping as he went over the wall there.
00:12:13And when he subsequently took his helmet off,
00:12:15I could see that he was grimacing in pain.
00:12:17Yes, what that's going to be, he's calling the marshals' overlooks.
00:12:20I've got a problem here.
00:12:22What's that going to be is a piece of wishbones
00:12:24coming into the monocoque, burst through the monocoque
00:12:26as the car hit the wall and at least pierced the skin on his leg.
00:12:31Obviously, he hasn't broken his bone,
00:12:33otherwise he wouldn't be leaping over the barrier.
00:12:35And that despondent face you saw
00:12:38was of the most experienced Grand Prix driver currently of them all,
00:12:42Jean Alessi, who loves Monaco,
00:12:44who adores the challenges that it gives a driver
00:12:47and responds to them so well,
00:12:49and was in seventh position, but is now one of the seven retirements.
00:12:53New fastest lap of the race for Micah Hackett,
00:12:55and now running in clear air.
00:12:57But he's too far adrift to do anything with it.
00:12:59He may still get some points.
00:13:00It's that kind of afternoon.
00:13:02Michael Schumacher has had to seriously pick up his pace.
00:13:05Now he's got the news that Coulthard's been released,
00:13:08and off he goes.
00:13:09That's Irvine in for...
00:13:12It's Herbert, sorry.
00:13:13It's Herbert in for his second stop of the afternoon,
00:13:16and he looks like he's still got problems, doesn't he?
00:13:18He's a very, very slow stop again there, 9.4.
00:13:21Actually, not too bad.
00:13:22Not too bad there for Johnny.
00:13:23See the light flashing?
00:13:25The rear light has to flash,
00:13:27and the fuel filler cap has to stay up with the electronics
00:13:31to indicate that they are not organized in such a way
00:13:35that they can give you traction control.
00:13:37Curious Johnny had to come in again,
00:13:38because obviously he had the unscheduled stop
00:13:40where you'd think they would have tanked it up.
00:13:42Maybe they didn't get fuel in when he came in last time around.
00:13:44Coulthard, a new fastest lap of the race now,
00:13:46a 1.22.1.
00:13:48But Michael Schumacher's down there on a 22.2,
00:13:51so Schumi really has picked his pace up.
00:13:54Coulthard has now dropped Frentzen by a full seven seconds.
00:13:58Now, the prophecy that we were making about it being a long time
00:14:02before anybody in this race amongst the leaders came in for a fuel stop
00:14:06has proved to be correct,
00:14:08because none of the first ten have yet been in
00:14:12as the Ferrari surges past the arrows
00:14:17and down towards the hairpin.
00:14:19Michael Schumacher's on his 43rd lap now
00:14:23and has yet to come in.
00:14:25He came in on lap 42 last year, actually,
00:14:28but he's obviously staying out longer.
00:14:30He's 33 seconds ahead of Coulthard,
00:14:32a superb pusher.
00:14:34He's very comfortable indeed, provided he can keep running,
00:14:37even though Schumacher...
00:14:38Oh, even though Coulthard is marginally quicker than he is at the moment.
00:14:42That's Joss Verstappen, who's in 11th place.
00:14:45Heinz-Harald Frentzen is third,
00:14:47but cannot cope with the now much faster David Coulthard,
00:14:51who has been released to go as quickly as he can.
00:14:55Rubens Barrichello, fourth position in the Ferraris,
00:14:59catching Frentzen at the rate of about half a second a lap.
00:15:03Fifth is Fisichella.
00:15:04Sixth is Eddie Irvine still,
00:15:06and he's catching Fisichella's Benetton.
00:15:09Seventh is Micasalo, just to complete the remaining runners.
00:15:13Villeneuve is eighth.
00:15:14Sontar is ninth.
00:15:15Heidfeldt is tenth.
00:15:16Mika Häkkinen is eleventh and has been lapped.
00:15:20Joss Verstappen is twelfth.
00:15:21Jonny Herbert is in thirteenth position.
00:15:24All the rest have retired.
00:15:27Yes, Jonny is now two laps down,
00:15:28unfortunately, after his two pit stops.
00:15:31You're watching David Coulthard in second place,
00:15:33now 7.6 seconds clear of Frentzen.
00:15:37But that time around, Schumacher pegged him.
00:15:40They were just about identical in the low one minute 22,
00:15:43so Schumacher's now responded and pegged Coulthard
00:15:47to a 33.5 second lead.
00:15:49The danger, as you've heard from us,
00:15:52we're riding with Coulthard now through the chicane,
00:15:54down towards the Tabac.
00:15:56Yeah, the track gets fantastic grip in the second half of the race.
00:15:59You can see the tyre rubber that goes down,
00:16:01and you just get this wonderful traction,
00:16:03and the car really feels good.
00:16:04The track comes to you as the race goes on,
00:16:06and you really can't believe how easy it is to do
00:16:091.21s, 1.22s, when earlier on in the weekend
00:16:12a 26 or a 27 was frightening you silly,
00:16:15and the track just picks up so much grip.
00:16:18Yeah, now David Coulthard obviously wants to win this race, of course,
00:16:21but he won't be too unhappy with second position.
00:16:24If he stays there, it will give him six World Championship points,
00:16:28which will move him ahead of Mika Häkkinen
00:16:32to second in the World Championship,
00:16:34behind Michael Schumacher,
00:16:36who will dramatically have extended his lead.
00:16:38Yes, he looks pretty calm behind the wheel of Coulthard's McLaren there,
00:16:41but he did a new fastest lap of the race.
00:16:43You can now see he's over 1.21.9
00:16:45and took nine tenths out of Schumacher's lead.
00:16:48So, if he can carry that kind of pace,
00:16:50he can certainly keep Schumacher honest for the rest of the afternoon, Mary.
00:16:53Yeah, and just as Michael Schumacher is looking like
00:16:56extending his World Championship lead,
00:16:58the same thing applies to Ferrari,
00:17:00who won the Constructors' Championship last year,
00:17:04are leading it this year by ten points,
00:17:06but they've got both their drivers in the top four,
00:17:11so that's 13 points potentially at the moment.
00:17:14Ten for Michael Schumacher, three for Rubens Barrichello,
00:17:17whereas McLaren have only got this man, David Coulthard,
00:17:20on a potential six World Championship points.
00:17:23So, it's looking very, very strong,
00:17:25very good indeed for Ferrari,
00:17:27who've got so many Italian Tifosi fans here.
00:17:31Michael Schumacher responding again.
00:17:33He also now in the 1.21.9, as you saw on your screen.
00:17:36And that is a faster lap than Mika Häkkinen last year.
00:17:41So, as the fuel load is coming down,
00:17:43and Michael Schumacher's concentration is maintained,
00:17:47it's not intensified,
00:17:48he goes three, eight, four tenths of a second faster,
00:17:51and David Coulthard is faster again.
00:17:54He's just taken two tenths of a second out of Michael Schumacher's lead,
00:17:59but since that lead is 32 seconds, nearly 33 seconds,
00:18:04Schumacher's very strong indeed.
00:18:06Verstappen again running across the chicane
00:18:12as we look at Riccardo Zonta now,
00:18:15chased by Nick Heidfeldt's Prost.
00:18:18Heidfeldt is in 10th position, looking for 9th position.
00:18:22Riccardo Zonta's first race here at Monaco,
00:18:26and David Coulthard continues to push, push, push on lap 46.
00:18:3278 lap race, 32 still to go.
00:18:35As you say, Martin, if you're a driver, it must seem like going on forever.
00:18:39Yes, it's such a shame.
00:18:40Coulthard's got a couple of cars to clear here,
00:18:42but it's such a shame he didn't get around truly earlier on,
00:18:46because I think we could have seen a great duel this afternoon
00:18:49between Schumacher and Coulthard.
00:18:51They're matching each other virtually identically.
00:18:53This lap's going to cost Coulthard some time, that's for sure.
00:18:55The blue flags are being waived for car number 15.
00:18:59Look, it's so, so slow around Rascasse,
00:19:02and they both go into pits.
00:19:03That'll be a sigh of relief for Coulthard.
00:19:06Yes, he's lost time, but not nearly as much as he would have done
00:19:09if they'd kept going, because Heidfeldt was intent on getting past Zonta,
00:19:13and Zonta was intent on stopping him.
00:19:15They come in absolutely together now.
00:19:18Yes, it cost Coulthard 1.7 seconds that lap,
00:19:21so Schumacher now 34 seconds ahead again.
00:19:24And we're on lap 47 as Heidfeldt gets away now.
00:19:27Is he going to stay in the same relative position against Ricciardo Zonta?
00:19:32No, Zonta's away first.
00:19:35Heidfeldt gets through to a very good stop by both teams,
00:19:39a better one by...
00:19:40Oh, and that was where we've had the two offs already today.
00:19:44It's very sad.
00:19:45It's probably all underneath.
00:19:46There is Eddie Irvine coming towards us in the Jaguar in sixth position.
00:19:51He has now lapped Jos Verstappen's arrows
00:19:54as they go into Massenet and Casino Square together.
00:19:57Irvine is holding his position.
00:20:00He's 22 seconds ahead of the first man on the track who is not in the points,
00:20:05and that is Micasalo.
00:20:07So, fingers crossed everywhere for Jaguar lovers,
00:20:11because Eddie Irvine is still there, still in the points,
00:20:15as this race starts to run its course.
00:20:18With Michael Schumacher still to come in on lap 48 out of 78.
00:20:2330 laps to go.
00:20:25I think they're still working on Ralf Schumacher there with his cut leg,
00:20:29so they're stretching him away.
00:20:32Obviously quite a nasty cut there for Ralf.
00:20:34And Formula 1 being what it is, motor racing being what it is,
00:20:39I can imagine there are probably people on the phone already to Frank Williams
00:20:42saying if Ralf Schumacher can't take part in the next race,
00:20:46which is the Canadian Grand Prix in two weeks' time,
00:20:49and he's not looking too good there at the moment,
00:20:51I would be very happy to take his place.
00:20:54So, fingers crossed too for Ralf Schumacher.
00:20:58Yeah, familiar sight, isn't it?
00:21:00Unfortunately, a Schumacher being stretched off,
00:21:03looking somewhat in pain with his leg.
00:21:05Obviously, brother Michael had that last year.
00:21:07I would have thought it was much more severe for Michael last year,
00:21:10because Ralf was able to hobble over the wall.
00:21:13But still, nonetheless, it must be a pretty nasty cut for them
00:21:16to have to take such dramatic action.
00:21:18So, we're looking at Rubens Barrichello now in the Ferrari,
00:21:22chasing Micah Hakkinen's McLaren.
00:21:26Now we're with David Coulthard, second position,
00:21:2934 seconds behind Michael Schumacher.
00:21:32No sign yet of the Ferrari coming in.

00:22:58at that mandatory 60 kilometers an hour.
00:23:02He's got the new-style pit lane speed limiter working,
00:23:06and David Coulthard has not come through as I predicted.
00:23:10There is David Coulthard coming round
00:23:13into the so-called start-and-finish straight,
00:23:15which is actually a curve,
00:23:17and he's still in second place,
00:23:19but Michael Schumacher has retained his lead
00:23:22from some 33 seconds
00:23:25to some 11 seconds,
00:23:28so he's lost about 22 seconds
00:23:31as a result of coming in,
00:23:33slowing stationary for just 7.7 seconds

00:23:39and he's got new tyres on now,
00:23:42and his concentration will not be affected.
00:23:44He can see a fifth Monaco Grand Prix victory in sight now,
00:23:49provided he just keeps going,
00:23:51because David Coulthard has still got to stop.
00:23:54He is 13, 14 seconds ahead of Fredson,
00:23:57who's got Barrichello right behind him,
00:23:59and in the barrier there,
00:24:01I can't see whether it's Zonta or Villon.

00:25:43So Nico Salo in the Sauber is up into the points.
00:25:48He's been there once already this season
00:25:50at the San Marino Grand Prix,
00:25:51but this is the battle on the circuit.
00:25:53It is Heinz-Harald Frentzen in third position
00:25:56in the yellow Jordan,
00:25:58pursued by Rubens Barrichello,
00:26:00who is looking to get onto the podium
00:26:02to make it not one, but two Ferrari drivers up there.
00:26:06And Barrichello urgently needs those points
00:26:09to improve his world championship point position.
00:26:12He's in fourth position in the championship at the moment,
00:26:16and he is lapping about four-tenths of a second faster
00:26:20with Mika Häkkinen in the background.
00:26:22But he's been lapped, don't forget.
00:26:24It's Michael not particularly fast
00:26:25since he put new tyres on and fuel on board
00:26:28to go through to the end of the 78 lapper.
00:26:31We're on lap 52,
00:26:32but he was 1.3 seconds slower.
00:26:35There's Fisichella makes his first
00:26:37and probably only stop of the afternoon
00:26:39from fifth place.
00:26:40Look at the brake dust as the air guns,
00:26:43the pressurized compressed air guns
00:26:46just disperse the whole lot of it.
00:26:49And Fisichella back out at 60 Ks as ever.

00:26:53The drivers ask for this place to be slower
00:26:55than anywhere else because it is so dangerous,

00:30:10so they'll both be pretty anxious to have that position.

00:30:14David Coulthard is now really pushing,
00:30:17but he's still got to come in.
00:30:19He's done the fastest lap of the race,
00:30:21a second quicker than Michael Schumacher,
00:30:24but don't forget that Schumacher on his 55th lap
00:30:26has had his soul stopped.
00:30:28David Coulthard, who is four seconds behind him now,

00:30:33He's the only one of the top seven who has not yet stopped.

00:33:31and I'm pretty sure there's something gone on the pull rod
00:33:34or the rear shock absorber mechanism on Michael Schumacher's car,
00:33:38so maybe he had a little thump of the barrier somewhere
00:33:41earlier on in the race,
00:33:42and that can so often catch you out later on,
00:33:46so Michael Schumacher there still limping back to the pits.
00:33:49In fourth position, he's been passed by Coulthard,

00:33:54he's been passed by his teammate Rubens Barrichello.
00:33:57The glittering prospect of a fifth victory here at Monaco

00:34:17because he damaged his left rear suspension in that incident.

00:34:22and certainly any chance of any significant points

00:38:34It seemed static for such a long time, but as in the past, everything changed very quickly
00:38:41indeed.
00:38:42This is lap 60.
00:38:43You're looking at the battle between Heinz-Harald Frentzen in the yellow Jordan, and Rubens
00:38:48Barrichello, or you were, in the scarlet Ferrari for second place, and David Coulthard, that
00:38:53we're riding with now, up the hill and into Bassinet and Cassino Square, is 17 seconds
00:38:59ahead of that battle with Frentzen in second place.
00:39:02That gap is coming down very slightly indeed.
00:39:05I think Coulthard has responded, because his last lap time was actually one tenth of a
00:39:10second faster than that of Frentzen.
00:39:13Fisichella is in fourth place, so it's McLaren, Jordan, Ferrari, Benetton, Eddie Irvine in
00:39:21the Jaguar is still looking good for a points position, he's in fifth place, 18 seconds
00:39:26ahead of Mika Salo-Salva.
00:39:27Yes, Coulthard getting very close to the wall there, as he came out of Portier and
00:39:33then out-braking himself into the chicane, so Coulthard still pushing, James, what can
00:39:37you tell us?
00:39:38Well, he's certainly holding up at the front, Michael Schumacher, reasonably philosophical
00:39:41from the look of the way he was when he took his helmet off, I can tell you that was the
00:39:44left rear suspension that broke, but the word at Ferrari is that he did not hit the barriers,
00:39:49that's the way they are saying at the moment, he did not hit the barriers, so they're not
00:39:52quite sure why it broke.
00:39:55Maybe it was because it wasn't strong enough, which seems reasonable enough, he certainly
00:39:58didn't hit the barrier that we saw.
00:40:00Some say he didn't hit the barrier some other time in the weekend, we did see him wallop
00:40:04it in qualifying yesterday with the left rear, they crack-test these parts, I'd be surprised
00:40:08if they weren't new suspension parts, but it's very unusual to have a failure like that,
00:40:14but this is a tough racetrack, a lot of bumps, a lot of, you know, you do get very close
00:40:18to barriers sometimes without actually knowing you've touched them, Michael didn't realise
00:40:22he'd hit the barrier in qualifying, it was just such a gentle touch, but it still puts
00:40:26a lot of side-load in, Hakkinen is on a charge, he's trying to catch his fellow Finn Mikasalo,
00:40:31who's occupying 6th place at the moment, and a world championship point, and Hakkinen needs
00:40:37that, Michael Schumacher out of the race, Hakkinen needs to maximise, as does Coulthard
00:40:41up there currently on 10 points, but he doesn't need too many scrappy laps like he had last
00:40:45time around.
00:40:46There is Mikasalo that we're looking at now in the south, he's in 6th position, you just
00:40:51saw a flash of Mika Hakkinen, who's really responded, as he always does, to a challenge.
00:40:57That is Eddie Irvine going through in the Jaguar, he's 25 seconds behind Fissing Keller
00:41:04in 5th position, Irvine, but Salo has got Mika Hakkinen getting closer and closer to
00:41:09him.
00:41:10Hakkinen is lapping a full second a lap faster than Mikasalo, he's only 5 seconds behind,
00:41:17we're on lap 62 out of 78, so Mika Hakkinen is certainly in a very strong position to
00:41:23get one world championship point.
00:41:26I can't see him then catching Eddie Irvine, unless the Jaguar man is very unlucky indeed,
00:41:32because Eddie Irvine that we're looking at now is some 18 seconds ahead of Mikasalo,
00:41:38who has yet to be caught and passed by Mika Hakkinen.
00:41:41David Coulthard meantime is on his 63rd lap, and he's maintaining the gap between himself
00:41:48and Heinz-Harald Frenzel, we're looking at Coulthard now, and some 17 seconds, yes, I
00:41:54apologise, that's Mika Hakkinen trying to close, well he is closing up on Mikasalo.
00:41:59And out of the race goes Jos Verstappen, now that's the swimming pool section, and there's
00:42:05no crane there, I can tell you that, so somehow or other they've got to get that car off the
00:42:10racing line and across the track, and push it back towards the tabac.
00:42:15Safety car on standby again, so safety car is on standby, doesn't mean to say they're
00:42:19necessarily going to use it, as earlier in the race, and well we've seen two arrows in
00:42:23that wall in exactly the same situation today, haven't we, and he managed then to come to
00:42:28the inside rather than at Della Rosa, stuffed one there this morning, and er, Mark Webber
00:42:33stuffed one there in the 3000 races.
00:42:35Yes, it's the same colour scheme, you're absolutely right, there's a magnet in there for anything
00:42:38painted orange and black this weekend, but they've moved that car, the crowd applauding,
00:42:43and that's really on the inside there, but it's still, if you had a big slide coming
00:42:49out of tabac you'd still manage to run into it, so what are they going to do?
00:42:52They can't lift it off, because the crane won't reach that far I'm pretty sure, so they're
00:42:57either going to have to rely on the drivers remembering where it is after they've passed
00:43:02it the first time, or they're going to have to bring out wave yellows, which prevents
00:43:07any passing in that sector, I should think it'll probably be the latter, as now we're
00:43:14on lap 64, 14 to go, David Coulthard looking good, Frentzen, not necessarily looking good
00:43:21for second position, if Barrichello can do anything about it, he can catch him but he
00:43:26can't get past him I think, Fisichella meantime is lapping faster in fourth position than
00:43:32either Frentzen or Barrichello ahead of him, and he's only five seconds behind Ruben Barrichello,
00:43:38Ferrari, Eddie Irvine out on his own, Mikas Salo out on his own, except that he's now got
00:43:45Mika Häkkinen getting closer and closer, there is the proof, Mika Salo in the dark blue Sauber
00:43:51into the Rascasse, as Mika Häkkinen gobbles up the gap between him, and if he gets past,
00:43:57or rather when he gets past the Sauber, Mika Häkkinen is going to be in the points again,
00:44:02absolutely no love lost at all between these fellow Finns, Salo will want that point, he'll
00:44:07fight for it, but Häkkinen surely has the much faster car, yeah he has, but then someone's got
00:44:13to make the decision about whether to show Mika Salo the blue flags, because if he can maintain
00:44:20his car in a position where Mika Häkkinen can't get past, the law will be with him, yes they can't
00:44:25show him a blue flag, it's for position, they cannot force him, he can block all he likes to
00:44:29the end of the day, they cannot show him a blue flag, you know he knows somebody's trying to pass
00:44:34him, but they cannot force him to yield of course, well he will know it's Mika Häkkinen, he can see
00:44:39him in his mirrors, he will know that that's the man in the race that he would least like to pass
00:44:44him, they had a gigantic rivalry in the British Formula 3 championship years ago, and they've
00:44:50still carried that enmity forward, so Mika Salo, Sauber wanting a world championship point to add

00:45:12but he will be after every point that he can get, fascinating to know what happened with Häkkinen's
00:45:18car earlier in the race, when he was so slow coming back to the pits, whatever it was, they fixed it in
00:45:23the pit stop, which is most unusual to have, to be so slow and then suddenly be so fast, but
00:45:29steady situation in the race at the moment, Häkkinen homing in on Salo
00:45:33for that final point at the moment, we're going to take a quick break

00:47:49lap 67 out of 78 at Monaco, race leader David Kuhlflad is being caught by Fredsen, but not
00:47:57nearly quickly enough for Fredsen, he's still 16 seconds ahead, this is the race on the track,
00:48:05it's the battle for sixth position between Finland's Mika Salo and Finland's Mika Häkkinen
00:48:11respectively in the Sauber and McLaren cars, who are being caught as you can see by David Kuhlflad,
00:48:19so Kuhlflad is coming up to lap his teammate Mika Häkkinen, now Kuhlflad's last lap was 1 minute 21.8,
00:48:28Mika Häkkinen's last lap was 1 minute 23.7, so Kuhlflad is lapping nearly two seconds a lap
00:48:34faster than Mika Häkkinen, who's going to be faced with a dilemma very shortly,
00:48:39can he get past Salo without holding his teammate up or should he let Kuhlflad through? Yeah,
00:48:45Kuhlflad doesn't need to be in the 1 minute 21s to win this race, mid 22s, late 22s would be
00:48:52absolutely fine, but I mean that's just a few tenths of the fastest lap of the race so far,
00:48:58Kuhlflad on a mission, Louise what can you tell us? I'm standing by here with Michael Schumacher,
00:49:02Michael any idea what caused that failure? Yeah, we had an exhaust failure, one of the pipe broke
00:49:08and basically cooked the suspension. It was such a crashing victory, it was on the cards.
00:49:14Yeah, but you know that's Formula One. I know you're anxious to find out news about your brother
00:49:19Ralph, any news on his injuries? Yeah, apparently he has a quite a deep cut into his leg,
00:49:26but nothing more than that, he has to have stitches,
00:49:30but no broken or no further problems, so quite lucky.
00:49:36Thank you Louise and thank you Michael Schumacher, good to know that Ralph's injuries are nothing
00:49:41worse than a cut, although I wonder whether that will have healed enough for the Canadian Grand
00:49:46Prix at Montreal in two weeks time, we have to go there a bit earlier, it being a long-haul event
00:49:52than we normally do, but David Kuhlflad's lean is still being whittled away very, very, very slowly,
00:49:59too slowly for Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Kuhlflad is on his 69th lap now and Mika Häkkinen as he
00:50:05disappears into the tunnel on the tail of Mika Salo-Sauber, still pressures his countryman,
00:50:12but still can't get past him as we look at Eddie Irvine still in that fifth position for Jaguar,
00:50:18still potentially on Jaguar's first world championship points, I think that's his
00:50:23teammate Johnny Herbert in front of him in 10th position, so both the Jaguars are running
00:50:28reliably and one of them is in the points potentially to get their first world championship
00:50:33points of their first Grand Prix season, Salo, Häkkinen, at and out of the Rascasse, through to
00:50:43complete their 69th lap and they, just as a matter of interest, are 74 seconds ahead of
00:50:51David Kuhlflad, the race leader, who's going to be on both of them pretty shortly, now look back
00:50:57and you may see, yes, there is David Kuhlflad, you can see the track gap there is between Mika Häkkinen
00:51:04in seventh place and his teammate David Kuhlflad, who is leading the race and is very nearly a full
00:51:11lap ahead of Salo and Häkkinen, but as Martin has rightly said, David Kuhlflad can afford to ease off
00:51:20quite a lot without being in danger of losing his lead, because it is now 17 seconds, Fredsen
00:51:29is lapping Martin only quicker than he is, but what would then matter is the time that Salo is lapping
00:51:35in comparison with Kuhlflad and it's about two seconds a lap slower, so David Kuhlflad could still
00:51:43go on for eight laps at a reduced speed and win the race and I reckon that's what he's going to do
00:51:48I think they're showing us Fisichella, because he's beginning to close in quite quickly now on
00:51:53Barrichello, certainly on the last lap by over 1.3 seconds, so Fisichella now trying to make a play
00:52:00for the final seat on the podium, Villeneuve in the BAR Honda, it's going to be significant
00:52:05if he gets lapped by Fredsen, they're basically the second Honda team lapping the worked Honda team
00:52:10and that will not go down at all well. Yes, Jordan are making the official Honda team look pretty
00:52:16shabby at the present moment and here is the race order on lap 71, as you look at Rubens Barrichello
00:52:24in third position and now Fredsen who is in second place 16.8 seconds behind race leader
00:52:30David Kuhlflad and four seconds ahead of fourth place Giancarlo Fisichella in the Benetton
00:52:37Eddie Irvine, and there goes the Jordan and Fredsen is now going to be passed by Rubens
00:52:44Barrichello who will move up into second position. Just a silly careless mistake there Murray, Fredsen
00:52:49just went in, cruised into the corner, ran fractionally wide and slapped the barrier, surely he's
00:52:54broken the rear suspension and the driveshaft I'd imagine, look at this, it just picks up a little
00:52:59bit of dirt and that's it and quite a whack actually, barrier yielded a little bit and that
00:53:04is Fredsen out of the race, what a silly careless mistake. So it means that the Ferrari is now on
00:53:10six world championship points and you are looking at it, this has eased the bitter blow for Ferrari
00:53:17and made things tougher for McLaren in the Constructors Championship because Kuhlflad is on
00:53:2310 points, Barrichello is on six, up into third position goes Fisichella in the Benetton, up into
00:53:30fourth place goes the Jaguar, Jaguar of Eddie Irvine, fifth is Salo, Mika Häkkinen is now in the points
00:53:38both the McLarens are in the points first and sixth. I think that Jordan will be manoeuvrable
00:53:43and they've got to pull it out of the way, I don't know which way they'll take it but the
00:53:47Jordan at least appeared to have its wheels pointing more in the right direction than
00:53:52Diniz's car earlier on in the race and the man who now needs to put a spurt on is Fisichella there
00:53:57in the blue Benetton because he's now got a chance of second place, I think without doubt Barrichello
00:54:03is ailing slightly and Fisichella homing in on him nicely, the gap now down to just 2.2 seconds.
00:54:10Yeah and on the last lap Fisichella was two seconds faster than Rubens Barrichello so he's
00:54:16going to be right up with the Ferrari, here is the order, Coulthard leads, Barrichello second,
00:54:21Fisichella that you're looking at closing up on the second place Ferrari in third position,
00:54:27Fredsen is out of the race, fourth then is Irvine, fifth is Salo, sixth is Häkkinen, seventh is
00:54:33Jacques Villeneuve, eighth is Heidfeld, ninth is Johnny Herbert, eight cars finished last year,
00:54:39nine are running this year and we are on lap 72 out of 78, all to play for and still some time to
00:54:47play, out of the tunnel Ferrari, Rubens Barrichello second place, where is Fisichella? He was only
00:54:56two seconds behind him when we last looked at him as he closed up, both Fisichella
00:55:02and there is Häkkinen looking now for fifth position and two world championship points by
00:55:07getting ahead of Salo who continues steadfastly to stay ahead of the McLaren whilst David Coulthard
00:55:14nearly a lap ahead of them on the track, closes up on his teammate Coulthard, Barrichello, Fisichella,
00:55:21Irvine, Salo, Micka Häkkinen, that's what we're looking at. Yeah well Coulthard can afford to relax now to the
00:55:2624 second lead but you saw what happened there with Fredsen if you relax and we've seen it happen
00:55:31with Senna, with Schumacher over the years, even the greatest drivers around here they're all capable
00:55:36of a slight lap, half a meter out and you're having a silly accident into the wall so Coulthard
00:55:42now backing off quite a lot now down into the one minute 23s but he's got a 23 second lead at the
00:55:48end of the last lap with six to go including this one now Fisichella just 1.9 seconds behind
00:55:55Barrichello and it absolutely amazes me that Häkkinen having just zoomed up to the back of Salo
00:56:00can't get anywhere near him now. Yeah it's not, you'd expect it to be harrying and I remember one
00:56:06of the most exciting races I've ever seen was the closing stages of the 1992 Monaco Grand Prix
00:56:12here in Monte Carlo when Ayrton Senna got ahead of Nigel Mansell who'd come in to change a wheel
00:56:19thinking he'd got a puncture when in fact it was just a loose wheel nut and Mansell came out, caught
00:56:25Senna's McLaren and harried it every inch of the way for the last six laps, he practically drove
00:56:32over the top of it but Senna just knowing the track as well as he did, a six times winner,
00:56:38stayed where he was, refused to let Mansell get past and won the race and subsequently became
00:56:44a six times and only six times winner at Monaco. So David Coulthard now is on his 74th lap,
00:56:53four laps to go at the end of this one and the battle that you're looking at is the major one
00:56:59of the circuit with nine cars left out of the 22 starting. Yes Eddie Irvine just 15 seconds down
00:57:05the road from that battle in a great fourth place so hopefully his Jaguar will see it to the end
00:57:10and get some reasonable points this afternoon. Hakan and Nara redoubling his efforts to put
00:57:14Salo under pressure and gain an extra world championship point. Frentzen, he's going to have
00:57:19some explaining to do to Eddie Jordan on that one. Well I know that Jackie Stewart's son Paul
00:57:25Stewart in England will be watching this race, he hasn't been with us for some time. It gives me an
00:57:32opportunity to say Paul that we are missing you in Formula One, get well soon and come back and
00:57:38your reward here we sincerely hope is going to see your man Eddie Irvine come home in fourth position
00:57:46for Jaguar's first world championship points. The points that you and your father Jackie and
00:57:52everybody else when it was the Stewart team have done so much to enable them to be possible today.
00:57:58So Salo and Hakkanen with Hakkanen closing up now but knowing that he mustn't be rash because
00:58:06at least he's in the running for one world championship point now but he can only get it
00:58:11if he pressures Mika Salo to do something wrong. If he does something wrong himself, Mika Hakkanen
00:58:16that is, he will prejudice the chance of getting even one world championship point which could
00:58:22decide the world championship in the end analysis. Last year the winner Mika Hakkanen was only two
00:58:29points ahead of Eddie Irvine in the Ferrari at the end of 16 hard-fought races. Every point
00:58:36counts in Formula One. And Hakkanen out-braking himself into the chicane going straight across
00:58:41again I don't think he'll get a penalty on that one. I wonder if he's got a similar problem to
00:58:45what he had earlier on but is he picking up speed or is Hakkanen cruising now? I think he's
00:58:50well he's slowed down there. Maybe he's got a brake problem which was the
00:58:55what caused him to overshoot the chicane. He's certainly visually going a lot slower there.
00:59:03Just listening to the engine. And he's got David Coulthard right up behind him now.
00:59:08There is the race leader Coulthard closing up on the sixth place man Mika Hakkanen. They're both
00:59:15in the points. Now Mika Hakkanen is 49 seconds ahead of Jacques Villeneuve. So if Hakkanen can
00:59:23just keep going he's going to be in for one world championship point. We're riding with Coulthard now
00:59:29and you will see the other McLaren of Mika Hakkanen now as it drops down to the Mirabeau,
00:59:36the right-hander. There he goes from the Mirabeau down to the Grand Hotel hairpin. This is it coming
00:59:43up. David Coulthard lap 76. Two to go at the end of this one. Leading by 20 seconds from Rubens
00:59:50Barrichello. Curiously there was some some kind of moisture on the camera lens of Coulthard's car
00:59:56so I would imagine Hakkanen's cars pumping something out of the back. And Ron Dennis stoically looking
01:00:03at the monitors in the McLaren pit lane area as we ride with David Coulthard coming up to his
01:00:09teammate Mika Hakkanen and looks in the mirrors moves over lets him through. No thanks he didn't
01:00:13move over he stayed on the racing line and made Coulthard go offline so Hakkanen there doing
01:00:19the least he really had to do. But it wasn't enough to stop David Coulthard going through
01:00:27so he's coming through to complete his 76th lap now. There are just 4.1 racing miles between David
01:00:36Coulthard and his second Grand Prix victory of the year 2000 having won the British Grand Prix
01:00:44and he will move ahead of Mika Hakkanen if they stay where they are to second in the World
01:00:49Championship. Some 12 points behind Michael Schumacher. I said earlier on all is not lost
01:00:56for McLaren all is not gained for Ferrari. Rubens Barrichello is looking good now because although
01:01:04Fisichella is closing up there he is in the background there's only three tenths of a second
01:01:09between them in terms of their lap times to the advantage of Fisichella and the Italian is not
01:01:16going to be able to catch the Brazilian unless Barrichello has a problem between now and the end
01:01:22of the race which is the next lap but one that's Fisichella, Coulthard, Barrichello, Fisichella,
01:01:29Irvine is fourth, still there, still there, the Jaguar is still in fourth position, Salo is still
01:01:35fifth, Hakkanen is still sixth, Villeneuve has been lapped and is seventh, Heidfeld is eighth,
01:01:41ninth is Johnny Herbert two laps down it looks as though both the Jaguars are going to finish
01:01:46and Heinz-Harald Frentzen is out of the race so there are only nine runners left as David Coulthard
01:01:54comes through now a full lap ahead of Micah Hakkanen to start his 78th and last lap of the
01:02:05Monaco Grand Prix well he has refused to give in I said earlier on that he's always pointed out
01:02:14that he's younger than Hakkanen and he's got a lot less race experience than Hakkanen he's convinced
01:02:20he can be world champion and he has driven an absolutely magnificent race yes I think those
01:02:26days now of comparing himself with Hakkanen in that sort of lower light he has to get out of
01:02:32really he's now in a great position if he can get to the end of this lap in the world championship
01:02:37and he's certainly been very pumped up all weekend he said I was so disappointed when
01:02:41qualifying ended I'm just loving driving the cars giving me a lot of confidence here all weekend
01:02:45and he went into the race with supreme confidence and it certainly paid off for him
01:02:50would have been nice to see him and Schumacher head-to-head earlier on in the race to see
01:02:54which of the two cars and drivers had the real pace but Coulthard now just a few corners from
01:03:00home Murray and yet again the man who started in pole position is not going to win the race
01:03:07it's beginning to look as though there is a bit of a jinx on getting pole position the thing that
01:03:12they all strive for that didn't worry David Coulthard well it did for a while but it won't
01:03:17be worrying him now into the Rascasse for the 78th and last time out of it and the McLaren mechanics
01:03:25will lean out and applaud him home there they are and David Coulthard wins the Monaco Grand Prix
01:03:31magnificently Rubens Barrichello is only 17 seconds behind him there he is coming into
01:03:38second position with Giancarlo Fisichella's Benetton in third place and Eddie Irvine is
01:03:45almost home in the Jaguar this is going to be the first world championship points finish for Jaguar
01:03:53if Irvine comes home and it's going to be very very well deserved where is he he was 45 seconds
01:04:01behind David Coulthard and the McLaren mechanics gather in the pit lane congratulate each other
01:04:08and I'm still looking for Irvine who has not yet gone past us there he is there is Eddie Irvine
01:04:16into the swimming pool complex for the last time I won't say he could coast home now but he could
01:04:23because he couldn't but he is going to have the enormous privilege and satisfaction of giving
01:04:29Jaguar as last year's second in the world championship Irvine their first world championship

01:04:42there from the paddock I think the Jaguar situation was looking pretty dire but that'll be a fillip
01:04:48for them good news for for that team there's the point to marry Michael Schumacher is as I forecast
01:04:56still leading the world championship he's 12 points ahead of Coulthard as opposed to 18 points
01:05:02ahead of Hakanen Mika Hakanen has been passed by his teammate and is now third in the world

01:06:01wonderful wonderful podium procedure it's so unusual and it's a great feeling and a dream
01:06:06ticket really for a British driver to win the British Grand Prix and then shortly afterwards
01:06:11the Monaco Grand Prix they would be the two top ones on your list if you had to choose two to win
01:06:19well McLaren are five points closer to Ferrari in the Constructors Championship
01:06:27as a result of David Coulthard's win and Micka Hakkinen's sixth position and Rubens Barrichello's
01:06:33second position for Ferrari so they are still if I'm right five seconds behind as Fisichella

01:16:07I've always said there's a few big Grands Prix for me personally that I'd like to win,
01:16:12and that's Spa, because it's my favorite track.
01:16:15The British Grand Prix, of course, because it's my home Grand Prix.
01:16:17The Italian Grand Prix, because there's nothing quite like an Italian crowd for Formula 1.
01:16:22And Monaco, because it's technically one of the most challenging and difficult tracks
01:16:25for any driver.
01:16:26And, ok, I've benefited today from problems with Michael and with Jarno, but that's Monaco.
01:16:33And I've had, I think, my fair share of bad luck over the years, so I'm quite happy to
01:16:37take this win today.
01:16:38You said it was a lucky win, but when you were that far behind Jarno and Michael, did
01:16:46you think you could get through either of them?
01:16:48Yeah, I thought there was an opportunity to get past Jarno.
01:16:50It was just a question of how far down the road Michael would be.
01:16:53The car felt good.
01:16:54I have to say, Pat and Paul, my two engineers, did a great job on setup and made an adjustment
01:16:59on the grid, and that really helped the balance.
01:17:01So I was able to run quick lap times as and when I wanted to.
01:17:04Ok, Michael had a big lead, but obviously that took a toll on his car.
01:17:09And you've got to have the reliable car, and you've got to keep away from the barriers.
01:17:12And today I was able to do that, and McLaren gave me the car to do that.
01:17:15Now interestingly, Michael actually went out with a suspension failure.
01:17:18I know in the past McLaren have bought tougher suspension components.
01:17:21Did you do it again this year?
01:17:23To be honest, I'm not sure, because I haven't done the last few tests since Barcelona.
01:17:31So there could well have been some different suspension, but I didn't ask the question.
01:17:35There's no need for me to know that.
01:17:37You don't go and try and hit barriers anyway.
01:17:39But clearly the built car was strong enough to go the distance for me.
01:17:42I don't know what Mika's problem was.
01:17:44Nonetheless, it's a great day for my side of the garage and for the whole West McLaren Mercedes team.
01:17:51You're now very firmly in second. You're 12 points behind Michael still, but 5 points ahead of Mika.
01:17:55And more importantly, you've seemed over the last few races to be gaining the upper hand.
01:17:59Do you feel you now have the psychological advantage over your teammate?
01:18:01And more importantly, do you think you now deserve to get the more focused attention that Mika got for the last two years when he established a lead?
01:18:08Well, first of all, Mika is a two-time world champion.

01:18:53Well, actually, the start wasn't too bad.
01:18:55I was just blocked with people in front. I had to brake.
01:18:59And, you know, Ralf made a really good start from the outside, so I had to back off.
01:19:05So I lost time with that.
01:19:07And fortunately, that was the story.
01:19:09I mean, I had such a bad qualify.
01:19:12I took the wrong decision for qualify.
01:19:14And then I was penalised with a bad start as well.
01:19:17And the race was catching up the whole time.
01:19:21I was conserving the tyres and fuel for much of the time.
01:19:25It was unlucky that we didn't do one more lap than Frentzen,
01:19:29because I would have caught him, because I think we were really faster than him.
01:19:34And, you know, he had maybe good tyres at the end.
01:19:38And, you know, I was just catching up again.
01:19:41I almost went into the bars before the tunnel.
01:19:46But I was pushing, pushing, pushing.
01:19:48At the end, Ross told me to back off because we had a problem.
01:19:51So we had to keep low revs.
01:19:54But, you know, apart from that, it was a good race, catching up the whole time,
01:19:58proving that qualify just went wrong.

01:20:03Giancarlo, when I spoke to you on the grid a couple of hours ago,
01:20:05you told me there's no way you'd be on the podium.
01:20:08How do you feel?
01:20:10I was not optimistic, obviously.
01:20:13But now I am very pleased about the result.
01:20:17The target was to score some points.
01:20:20Obviously, my dream was to get on the podium.

01:20:27We did a very good job, especially this morning in the warm-up.

01:20:41No, I think when I did about 45, 46 laps, I had a puncture in my rear tyre.
01:20:50So I did my first pit stop 10 laps before the normal.
01:20:55And I lost 7, 8 seconds.
01:21:00But then, at the end, with the new tyres,
01:21:08well after the first pit stop, I was quite confident.
01:21:14There was good balance, and I was pushing very hard.
01:21:18I was quite quick, and I was catching Rubens.

01:21:34I feel very positive going to Montreal.
01:21:37It's a track that I think I've particularly gone well at in the past,
01:21:40although I've broken down twice whilst leading that race.
01:21:44So hopefully luck is changing, and it's a good track for me personally.
