00:00:00It's your last taste of Formula One on ITV this year. The dish is oriental
00:00:05It's the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang close to Kuala Lumpur and prime to serve up the action
00:00:11It's Martin Brundle and Murray Walker
00:00:16Welcome to the finest Grand Prix circuit in the world a full stop. Look at it Sepang
00:00:24Magnificent facilities room for passing the drivers love the track something they don't like though air temperature
00:00:3132 degrees track temperature 35 degrees humidity
00:00:3658%
00:00:38Rubens Barrichello has had a nasty batch of flu
00:00:43He's starting fourth on the grid not at all happy David Coulthard has had some food poisoning
00:00:49He's fitter than he was but is he going to be all right in this atmosphere?
00:00:53It's a funny atmosphere. Actually, it's a sort of end of term the
00:00:58Drivers Championship may have been decided but you know about the Constructors Championship
00:01:03There's all sorts of other people who will be looking apart from Johnny Herbert in his last Grand Prix to make their mark today
00:01:10Jenson Button's last drive for Williams
00:01:13Alexander Vought starting a magnificent and absolutely superb
00:01:18Fifth on the grid the first non McLaren or Ferrari driving his last race for Benetton Nick Heidfeld
00:01:25Thankfully driving his last race for Prost. He's had a dreadful season and
00:01:30Micasalo is driving his last race for Sauber before he joins Toyota to test their new car next year
00:01:37Ricardo Zonta next year's and Jordan Testa is driving his last race for BAR
00:01:43And he was fastest this morning in the pre-race warm-up
00:01:48But it's also Prost's last race with a Peugeot
00:01:51Peugeot engine
00:01:53Minard is with Ford Arrows with supertech Jordan with Mugen Benetton with supertech and it's
00:01:59Bridgestone's last race with a monopoly of tar supply before Michelin joins the fray next year
00:02:06So Michael Schumacher pole position yet again
00:02:10Just five tenths of a second between him and Micah Hacken and yesterday two tenths of a second between them this morning
00:02:17Micah Hacken and closed the gap a bit and then as we've come to expect the other McLaren and the other Ferrari
00:02:24But also watch that third row of the grid Alexander Vought's and Jacques Villeneuve because they're respectively in
00:02:31The Benetton and the BAR cars and those teams as you've already heard
00:02:37Fighting for fourth place in the world in the Constructors Championship. Well, you've been down there
00:02:42You know what the temperatures are like, you know what the feel of it's like Martin. What's your guess?
00:02:4725% chance of light rain. There is a weather front out there somewhere could move this way
00:02:52I don't think the teams are taking it too seriously, but with a track temperature of 35 centigrade
00:02:58just the
00:02:59Incredible residual heat around this place
00:03:01I think anything it'd have to be quite heavy rain before it started to affect the cars out there. So
00:03:07One stop last year looked pretty good
00:03:10Johnny Herbert had a great race on one stopper in the then Stewart and
00:03:14Michael Schumacher really had to go as slow as he could to give the race away twice and he was on a one-stopper strategy
00:03:20So I'm expecting the bulk of them to do that today. Of course, they'll have to
00:03:25Work out where they are on the grid who they're around what they might be able to do to make advantage
00:03:30Few teams out there really could do with scoring some points. Jordan must be one of them
00:03:35BAR to need to get a few points in the bag to confirm their position in the championship
00:03:39so in the lower placings some jolly good scraps to watch out for and an intense battle between
00:03:46The together five times world champions that are sitting on the front row of this grid
00:03:52And you can see in the background when you're now in the grandstand the facilities here really have to be seen to be appreciated
00:03:59They are quite incredible. We're about to clear the grid and start the formation lap
00:04:063.4 miles each lap. There's going to be 56 of them in the race and
00:04:11Although you've heard it again
00:04:13I'd like to repeat the fitness of the drivers is going to be an absolutely critical factor today
00:04:19Michael Schumacher, certainly the fittest on the grid David Coulthard
00:04:23You heard Tony Jardine say he sees him as the second fittest
00:04:26But he's taken a bit of a pounding in the last couple of days Rubens Barry Keller
00:04:31Not at all. Well, Mika Hakkinen, you can never ever overlook don't miss the fit
00:04:38Yes, Hakkinen was absolutely exhausted on the podium here last year
00:04:42Remember absolutely just barely holding himself up
00:04:45But he did have that tough race trying to second-guess
00:04:48Where Michael Schumacher was going to be quick and slow as Schumacher was backing him up into the pack
00:04:53And of course the championship was still up for grabs at that time
00:04:56So mentally a very stressful race last year for Hakkinen, but I think this could be
00:05:00The toughest race will be the toughest physical and mental race of the year
00:05:06Despite the championship for drivers effectively being over too long too long almost
00:05:12Parallel straights make this circuit absolutely unique because they run around them as they are doing now
00:05:18They're up to turn four at the present moment
00:05:21which should take about 75 miles an hour and then the circuit sort of loops around with a series of
00:05:27All kinds of corner most of them pretty quick turn seven that they're approaching now
00:05:33They take it about a hundred and ten miles an hour accelerating
00:05:36We're with Rubens Barrichello now and they're coming up to the slowest corner on the circuit, which is turn nine
00:05:44It's about a 55 mile an hour bend
00:05:48They take that in second gear
00:05:50This is it and you're seeing it from Ruben's car ahead of him
00:05:55there's David Coulthard that oil on the track with the cement dust came from the local heroes touring car race and
00:06:03Hopefully has been well cleared up now, they're approaching the first of the long straights
00:06:08It's called the Penang straight and it comes at a speed of about 185 miles an hour
00:06:14And then they break to 65 miles an hour for the 15th and last turn on the corner
00:06:20Here they are coming up the Penang straight the Kuala Lumpur straight
00:06:24Which runs almost parallel to it in which you'll see in a minute is exactly the same length
00:06:29Leads into that classic requirement for a good Grand Prix circuit a very fast approach to a very slow corner
00:06:36Yes, one man to watch we Jensen Button down there in 16th place and usually for him not hooked up to this track
00:06:42Look how wide it is and he struggled to find the groove a Formula One cars almost dwarfed around here
00:06:47particularly with those magnificent grandstands you can see in the top right hand corner of your picture and
00:06:53Jensen not hooked up looking forward to seeing if he can do anything from that 16th on the grid
00:06:59So as I said, they'll be hitting a very considerable speed by the time they get to turn one
00:07:05Which they take in second gear at 60 miles an hour under the eyes
00:07:09Of course of everybody in the McLaren garage and the Ferrari garage. It's a tense time
00:07:15With approximately an hour and a half plus of racing as they filter
00:07:20From they approach into the two lanes on the right hand side you see in pole position
00:07:26Michael Schumacher on the left Mika Hakkinen
00:07:29Well in these temperatures, they've certainly taken a long time to form up on the grid
00:07:32The cars at the front have been sitting there well over half a minute. They'll be extremely
00:07:37Extremely hard lights are on. So the last Grand Prix of 2000 is in Malaysia and it is go
00:07:45Now a good start it looks like from Michael Schumacher
00:07:47But Mika Hakkinen yet again has got ahead of the Ferrari
00:07:51Schumacher tried to cut across and failed and David Coulthard is right up alongside as Alexander Voortz
00:07:57tackles Barry Kello and round the outside of them runs the
00:08:03BAR of Jacques Villeneuve a terrific start
00:08:05I'm pretty sure that Hakkinen moved along a long time before the lights came on
00:08:10But bought the car to a halt and he may get away with it
00:08:14I think there's a spinner down in turn one
00:08:16But Michael Schumacher having a stab at the inside and a wheel is off. Who's is that? It's an Arrows and a Sauber
00:08:23Yeah, it's an Arrows and a Sauber at the back can't spot which one it's likely to be Mika Salo
00:08:28I think and Jasper Staffen. Well, there is Della Rosa in the other Arrows, but meantime
00:08:35Coulthard has got ahead of Schumacher McLaren run first and second. Let's have a look
00:08:41Yes
00:08:41Coulthard had a good start ran right round the outside of Schumacher tried to come up the inside of him too and there is the
00:08:47Carnage into turn two and Arrows bouncing around and at least three cars involved in that the Sauber the Arrows
00:08:54But in the car one is under investigation by the stewards. That is Mika Hakkinen
00:09:00He moved way way before the lights went out some kind of problem with the clutch or whatever but miles away
00:09:06But the difference is he bought the car to a complete halt. He may may get away with it
00:09:13Well, we'll have to wait and see David Coulthard didn't get away with it. You remember safety car Mary
00:09:17Sorry to interrupt safety car is deployed there
00:09:20You see the SC boards for the drivers and the waved yellow flags
00:09:23Too many wheels and cars hanging around in turn two and that zone and they will have to bring this that they have bought the
00:09:30Safety car out
00:09:30Well meantime, of course
00:09:32This will give the stewards a breathing space to to deliberate what happens about Mika Hakkinen as we look at this
00:09:38replay and remember the Jack Villeneuve made an absolutely terrific start in the
00:09:43Bar from sixth on the grid sprinted up to fourth and that is Della Rosa
00:09:49restarting in the Arrows
00:09:51It was very similar what the Hakkinen did that Coulthard did on the start in Indianapolis, but Coulthard was
00:09:58Actually still moving and Hakkinen bought the car in my view to a complete halt
00:10:04So there is a slight difference and that's why I think there is a small chance
00:10:08He'll get away with that. But now the safety car is out. They'll start recalculating now
00:10:14They use so much less fuel cruising around at this speed
00:10:18Safety cars going faster than you might imagine
00:10:20The Formula One cars tucked up in first and second gear
00:10:23But they're using a lot less fuel and already the teams will be recalculating the strategy and there are the three drivers out Della Rosa
00:10:30Heidfeldt and Diniz and Jensen Patton making up six places on that first lap funnily enough
00:10:37It is in many ways worse to start and then stop and then start again. They get a clean start right away
00:10:44I'm not with you. Well, I mean you you've lost the momentum you're thrown
00:10:49You're looking at the bloke on the left and they'd certainly have to gather it all up and go
00:10:53I see you're talking about Hakkinen in particular rather than the start in general. I understand completely what you're saying now
00:10:58Yes, often that puts you completely off your stroke and you miss the second part of it
00:11:02But Hakkinen got away reasonably well
00:11:04I think Michael Schumacher had a particularly poor start looks to me like the Ferrari is very very heavy on fuel
00:11:11Schumacher and
00:11:13Struggling on that first lap. We also saw Hakkinen with two wheels on the grass as well
00:11:18And I've just seen a medical car come in the pit lane
00:11:21I don't think the safety car will be out there very long while they clear this away
00:11:25Not absolutely sure why they had to bring the safety car out say
00:11:30You know, the track is completely clear, but I guess they had to recover those wheels
00:11:34Well, there was a lot of contention to remember in Japan when the governing body the FIA
00:11:39Issued an instruction through race director Charlie Whiting that in the event of any team tactics which resulted in
00:11:47Bulking there would be a very severe penalty. Well now Mika Hakkinen is leading this race
00:11:52David Coulthard could potentially try to delay Michael Schumacher, but he'll have to be very careful indeed how he does it
00:11:59Now the safety car will come in his lights are off. Look he will come in the pit lane and Hakkinen
00:12:04Assumes the role of safety car driver and now Michael Schumacher's got to somehow stay as close to David Coulthard as he can
00:12:11But he has not done so. Will Hakkinen release Coulthard if he's under a problem with a jump start?
00:12:18So will Hakkinen do that?
00:12:20We'll have to wait and see but both McLaren's away well and over the line
00:12:23They cannot overtake until they pass that star finish line. So McLaren McLaren Ferrari Ferrari
00:12:30Hakkinen Coulthard
00:12:31Schumacher Barrichello, and then as you can see the Benetton and the BAR and Eddie Irvine down in seventh position
00:12:39In the Jaguar, which is exactly where he started
00:12:43So the race now begins and he releases Coulthard. I believe that's Coulthard going through
00:12:48Yes Hakkinen releases Coulthard and Michael Schumacher trying to make something of it now watch Hakkinen on the right hand side of the grid
00:12:54Now this was the start proper. This was not a replay of
00:12:59Hakkinen jumping the start. So look he got away
00:13:01Well Schumacher tucked in his slipstream and Coulthard then powering down the outside and Coulthard will now keep that position
00:13:08All the way around the outside of turn one Hakkinen
00:13:11I think doing a good job to back
00:13:13Michael Schumacher into the apex early and give his teammate a chance to come up there and help him
00:13:19Look at Villeneuve you see at the start there at the first turn one
00:13:22This is a replay trying to run around the outside now
00:13:25Look at the conflagration at the back which is about to happen
00:13:27You can't see it because now you look at David Coulthard and the Ferrari has got ahead of Micah Hakkinen and Barrichello
00:13:34He's trying to go through as well, and he's done it. He's done it for Ferrari run second and a third
00:13:40I don't know what's happened to Micah Hakkinen
00:13:42Did he let David Coulthard through deliberately or is he got some sort of a problem because he's now been passed by three cars
00:13:49He was leading Coulthard passed him then Schumacher passed him and now Barrichello's passed him
00:13:54And he's down to fourth position and Wurz having a look as well there into turn 15 did Wurz get through
00:14:00No, he did not. Why did Micah Hakkinen lose so many places?
00:14:03It just seems like he just had a bad run out of
00:14:07Turn 10 I think that is and really strange Hakkinen having a nightmare two laps of this race
00:14:12Yeah, that was a replay of Barrichello nipping through on the inside of Micah Hakkinen
00:14:17And you can see how close Alexander Wurz is. Last race in the Benetton Villeneuve is still in sixth position
00:14:23Eddie Irvine is in seventh place. Heinz-Harald Frensen has had a superb run because he's come up from 10th to 8th position
00:14:30Johnny Herbert is down to 9th place. Jenson Button has absolutely rocketed through the field as you just heard from Martin
00:14:38He's gained six places. He's up from 16th to 10th, and you can see him in the background there
00:14:44Challenging Micah Salo. No, he's passed Micah Salo now and here come the leaders. There's Barrichello
00:14:52There's Hakkinen and there is Wurz followed by Villeneuve
00:14:56So Micah Hakkinen is severely under pressure. Lost places
00:15:01Remember what Ferrari are after is just three points to win the Constructors' Championship
00:15:07At the present moment
00:15:08They're on ten points with Michael Schumacher in second place and Rubens Barrichello in third position
00:15:15Long way to go though. Joel, just to finish Hakkinen's afternoon off
00:15:18He has been given a stop-go penalty
00:15:21So Hakkinen will have to come in. That is a cost of about 28 seconds to him for that 10-second stop-and-go
00:15:28At the time he's negotiated the pit-in and pit-out and slowed down
00:15:33So Hakkinen then, his afternoon ruined. I do not see him coming back to challenge for a podium from that position
00:15:40It really is going to cost him dearly. Hakkinen has not got to come in until a maximum of three laps after the notification
00:15:48The notification is 10 minutes past the hour
00:15:50So Micah Hakkinen must come in now within the next three laps. Otherwise, he will be black flagged
00:15:56Well, you can be sure that what we are then going to see is a scintillating
00:16:00display of recovery driving from Micah Hakkinen who will be fighting his way up from whatever position he
00:16:07Rejoins the race in from the pit lane after his penalty to try to get back into the points
00:16:12It's looking more and more forlorn the Constructors Championship for McLaren as this race develops bad enough because
00:16:20Micah Hakkinen will be right out of the points
00:16:23Although David Coulthard there you see is leading the Malaysian Grand Prix on lap five out of 56 coming up to
00:16:321.11 the distance already
00:16:34He has a 1.8 second lead over Michael Schumacher
00:16:38Who himself is leading Robins Barrichello by the same amount there is Hakkinen in fourth place
00:16:44Voigt is pressing very hard indeed in the Benetton followed by Villeneuve and still Irvine Frentzen
00:16:51Zonta in the second B.A.R. is up to ninth place ahead of Johnny Herbert
00:16:56That Ferrari is fat with gas and Michael Schumacher has no doubt about it at all
00:17:00How much fuel does Coulthard have on board?
00:17:03What strategy have McLaren played because Coulthard pulling away from Michael Schumacher
00:17:08I believe the Schumacher-Ferrari combination has got a slight advantage performance-wise
00:17:13But Coulthard and we also know from earlier races in the season that Ferrari can go a couple of laps further around here
00:17:20At least I would have said with a slightly bigger fuel tank
00:17:23So Coulthard needs to make a while the Sun shines in the early stages of this Grand Prix
00:17:29Into the pits comes Micah Hakkinen for his penalty, through goes Voigt, Villeneuve
00:17:35Eddie Irvine goes through, still Micah Hakkinen is yet to stop
00:17:39Zonta has gone through, Johnny Herbert and Micah Salo
00:17:43Now watch this because when Micah Hakkinen rejoins he's going to be virtually last
00:17:50De La Rosa, he is last in already
00:17:53Down goes the fuel and he really smokes out of the pit lane
00:17:57All 19 competitors are through before Micah Hakkinen joins the Malaysian Grand Prix after his penalty
00:18:05Last of all
00:18:0820th and last with
00:18:1019th and last with retirements already from Pedro Diniz in the Sauber
00:18:15Mick Heidfeld has finished his career with Prost by retiring very early
00:18:20And Pedro De La Rosa has retired the Arrows also
00:18:24Now looking across the grandstand
00:18:27David Coulthard has put in a series of fastest laps
00:18:30He's increased the gap over Michael Schumacher to 2.5 seconds
00:18:35Is he on a lighter fuel load, a two-stop strategy in which case he would come in at the earliest roundabout lap 19
00:18:42Maybe as late as lap 27 and expect a second stop roundabout lap 39
00:18:48If Michael Schumacher is on a one-stop strategy as we suspect he's holding on very well indeed
00:18:54And he's not going to be coming in for at least nine laps after David Coulthard
00:18:58So there's a big tactical battle developing
00:19:01Right, well, it takes 28 seconds to stop so Coulthard has to be that much faster over the Grand Prix distance
00:19:08Approximately then half a second a lap if indeed he is on a two-stopper
00:19:14Watch Villeneuve, Jack Villeneuve in fifth position was right up alongside
00:19:18Alexander Wurz when they came out of turn 15
00:19:21Wurz was in fourth position in the Benetton
00:19:24It looks as though Villeneuve is
00:19:26Challenging to get past the Benetton and improve the B.A.R.'s team's chances of getting that fourth place in the Constructors Championship
00:19:34Which they're looking for so much
00:19:36David Coulthard, race leader out of turn 4 up to the long turn 5 left-hander fourth gear
00:19:44135 miles an hour out of it and up to now turn 9
00:19:49Frentzen in the pits Hakanen is running 18th because he's had to take that stop go so early the whole field have gone past him
00:19:57So effectively now with Frentzen in the pits Hakanen running 18th and last
00:20:02De La Rosa, Heidfeld and Diniz out after an accident on the second corner of the first lap
00:20:07And the Jordan mechanics trudge back into the garage. It's tough enough for the drivers in this heat and humidity
00:20:13It's really terrible for mechanics
00:20:15The humidity's gone down a bit to 54% but it's still very very damp indeed if you're wearing out a clothing
00:20:21Coulthard looking handy on this lap
00:20:23He's currently seven tenths of a second up on this lap so far over Michael Schumacher
00:20:28So look he's edging out that lead nicely
00:20:31he's got to be on average half a second a lap ahead of him if he is on a
00:20:37Two stopper as opposed to Michael one stopper. So Coulthard leads by 2.8 seconds from Michael Schumacher
00:20:43Rubens Barrichello, Wurz is fourth, Villeneuve fifth, Irvine in the Jaguar sixth place. We'll be back very shortly
00:22:44Oh
00:23:06Lap nine and you are looking at the blue Benetton of Alexander Vaux
00:23:14fourth position holding a
00:23:16Magnificent fourth place Jack Villeneuve who was fighting him is in the background
00:23:20You can see there's Frentzen out of the race one Jordan retirement already
00:23:25And if the Prost drivers have had a dreadful season, so is Heinz-Harald Frentzen
00:23:30this is Grand Prix 17 of 17 and that is the
00:23:3511th time that Heinz-Harald Frentzen, a three times Grand Prix winner has retired
00:23:42Villeneuve now the gap between Villeneuve and Wurz is just 1.9 seconds Wurz is actually increasing it
00:23:49He's going quicker than the B.A.R. and Eddie Irvine
00:23:52The Jaguars are going well Eddie Irvine holding on to that sixth position
00:23:57he's in the points Johnny Herbert is in eighth place there he is just coming round the
00:24:02right hander at turn 14 to go down the Penang Street as
00:24:07Villeneuve and Irvine the Jaguar not looking to be handling as well as the B.A.R. come down
00:24:14the Kuala Lumpur Street to turn one. Kulthar absolutely flying to
00:24:181.2 seconds out of Michael Schumacher to extend his lead to 5.3 now and a very very good scrap shaping up between Wurz, Villeneuve
00:24:27Irvine and Zonta the fourth fifth sixth and seventh as the race unfolds and that's a quick lap from Kulthar this morning's warm-up
00:24:34They were in the very low 1 minute 40s as a good time. So as a race pace, that is pretty stunning
00:24:40What's your guess Martin?
00:24:43Kulthar two stops Schumacher one or I think you'd have to say that given that he's 1.2 faster than Michael
00:24:49But that's more than just a fuel difference clearly Kulthar's car is nicely hooked up at this stage of the race
00:24:55And he seems able to effortlessly pull away
00:24:57Remember I said he's got to have half a second a lap in
00:25:00Hand over Michael if he does indeed have to stop and Kulthar running quite wide through that corner actually lost a little bit of
00:25:06Time there, but at the moment he's able to get that time saving in that he needs
00:25:12He's 5.3 up after nine laps. He's got to keep an edge on that
00:25:16He'll be watching closely if he knows he's got to stop one more time than Michael Schumacher
00:25:20I spoke to David just before the drivers parade. I said, how are you feeling?
00:25:24He said not too bad, but we'll know during the race Louise Louise Goodman
00:25:28I'm down in the Jordan garage my a lot of long faces down here as you've mentioned earlier Heinz Harald Frentzen's come into the garage
00:25:33He's got a problem with his power steering now the team are working on the car at the moment trying to fix it
00:25:37But to be honest, even if he gets out onto the track again
00:25:40All hope of climbing up the team climbing up from sixth base in the championship position has now gone
00:25:45Jarno truly has already had to pit he had to come in on lap one to replace his nose after the wing got damaged in
00:25:51an accident on the first lap, so
00:25:53It's been a I think all around it's been a bad day a bad end to a bad season for Jordan Grand Prix
00:25:58Well as you watch Villeneuve of an Zonta and Salo and now Johnny Herbert behind them in ninth position coming through
00:26:06The the chap who's causing the problem in the constructors championship
00:26:11Battle between BA and Benetton is fissy Keller. He's down in 12th position. He started well down the field
00:26:17He's been right off the pace here. Nobody can understand why the team say it's not the car that it's fissy Keller
00:26:24But he's been faster than votes most of the season, but the Austrian has now been completely liberated
00:26:31He's had all the worries of leaving the team take from his shoulders with the news that he's driving for McLaren as test driver next
00:26:37Year, and we know how Olivier Panis reacted this year
00:26:41Well truly in the second and only remaining Jordan then in for yet another stop his second stop after just ten laps
00:26:48So all falling apart as Louise explained we saw Coulthard have a scruffy lap. We saw him get out of shape
00:26:54He lost four or five tenths to Michael Schumacher last time around now. He's really trying to make amends
00:27:00So he's four point eight seconds up after ten laps
00:27:03He needs to keep that gap half a second plus per lap and he's fallen behind the schedule
00:27:09But this is going to be the fastest lap of the race
00:27:12I believe so far as Coulthard heads for the start finish line to commence his twelfth lap
00:27:19That twelve and top ten with comments David Coulthard four point eight seconds ahead of world champion Michael Schumacher
00:27:26There he is. You can see Rubens Barrichello in third place. You can see votes
00:27:31There is field nerve in the white BA are in fifth position Eddie Irvine in the Jaguar holding on
00:27:37Magnificently and keeping off Ricardo Zonta if Zonta could get ahead of Irvine
00:27:41It'll mean that both the BA ours are in the top six
00:27:46Salo is eight in the South
00:27:49Johnny Herbert is ninth
00:27:51Jensen button holding that tenth place and actually lapping slower than Mika Salas and Johnny Herbert ahead of him
00:27:57So he's not gaining ground
00:27:59Yeah miserable day for BMW Williams at the moment button down in tenth
00:28:03And as you say Mary three and a half seconds off the leaders pace at the moment Ralph Schumacher down in 15
00:28:10We didn't talk much about it. I briefly remember him all four wheels on the grass
00:28:15Avoiding that accident in the first lap
00:28:18So down in 10th and 16th for Williams and you may be asking of course, where is Mika Hakkinen?
00:28:24Well, he came in and had that penalty stop. He's in 16th position
00:28:29No less than 46 seconds behind his teammate race leader David Coulthard
00:28:36He's 2.4 seconds behind Ralph Schumacher
00:28:39But he's lapping much much quicker than the Williams and he will be on its rear wing before very much longer and James Allen has
00:28:45News, you know been looking at this
00:28:47It looks like an average about seven tenths of a second the lap
00:28:50Performance difference between Coulthard and Schumacher that equates to around 20 kilos of fuel
00:28:55So obviously we've had the safety car at the start which will extend that first run
00:28:58But I expect Coulthard probably around 20 lap 25 to make a stop Schumacher
00:29:03It's difficult to tell his pace is a lot lot faster than it was last year on a one stopper
00:29:07He's really flying. So I reckon around about lap 28 to 30, but DC has got to think much more long-term than this
00:29:13It's not just the first stop
00:29:14It's the second stop as well because when he comes in after that
00:29:18Any car within 28 seconds of him will read your will be in front of him when he rejoins
00:29:22Traffic is a big issue for him. And we've just seen the McLaren run very wide. There's a massive banner in the
00:29:30Grandstand saying James Allen the pit lane God. That was a masterly analysis James
00:29:35We'll keep tabs on it. You're looking at Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello still second and third
00:29:41Yes, Coulthard had a bad lap again. He really is pushing it to the limit. I think that confirms really
00:29:47He knows he's got to stop one more time than Michael Schumacher and Coulthard on the ragged edge trying to eek out
00:29:53He's gonna have to drive every lap of this race flat out to beat the Ferrari
00:29:59Clearly a strategy
00:30:01McLaren must have bought into play to try to get Coulthard off of that second row of the grid early stages of the race with
00:30:07A lighter car and it's worked so far
00:30:10Can he keep the pace up necessary and keep it on the black stuff to make it stick because there are still 13
00:30:16Constructors championship points between
00:30:20Ferrari and McLaren because David Coulthard is on 10 Schumacher and Barrichello are earning 10 between them and
00:30:28Ferrari started 13 ahead. Well that all went west didn't it with Hacken and jumpstart really? He's still back there
00:30:35Although lapping second fastest third fastest car on the track after the two leaders Hacken and nailed down there in
00:30:4216th place still making a small impression on Ralph Schumacher now up to 15th
00:30:47So the McLaren needed a one and two with no Ferraris better than fourth place that I think is over now votes in
00:30:55Fourth place is lapping only half a second slower than Mika Hacken and so Hacken and may get past Schumacher
00:31:02He may get past Janae a Lacey
00:31:05Fisichella button the stappen, but then he's going to come up against Johnny Herbert who is in ninth place
00:31:11Salos on to Irvine and Villeneuve who are running fifth to ninth virtually together
00:31:17And he's going to have to work very hard indeed to catch never mind get past them
00:31:21It's looking more and more difficult for Mika Hacken and to finish in the points
00:31:26We're on lap 14 out of 56
00:31:29None of the top men have yet come in for fuel stops Mika Hacken and of course has been in for that
00:31:36Penalty stop Trulli has stopped twice Frentzen has stopped twice
00:31:41Retirements now Frentzen Heidfeldt Diniz and De La Rosa
00:31:4517 are still running fast Trulli is coming in and out of the pits the last runner as ever is Gaston
00:31:52Mazzucane as we go to a break
