00:33I'm Evan Maranofsky.
00:34That is Connor Ryan.
00:35Connor, what is up?
00:37Evan, I'm doing well.
00:39How are you doing?
00:40Doing great.
00:41Doing great.
00:42It's an exciting time, beginning of September and captain's practice.
00:47We're doing this on Tuesday.
00:48It was today.
00:49Tuesday, there's another captain's practice.
00:52On Thursday, hockey, fresh quotes, news, you'd see some of the rats in the press box.
01:01And it's life is coming back to normal, which is nice.
01:05Everybody coming back from summer.
01:06It almost kind of, you know, the last two weekends I've been at hockey events.
01:10So that's kind of felt, you know, like it's not new for hockey, but like first Bruins
01:15event of the year kind of felt like first day of school or like some sort of like orientation
01:19almost.
01:20Can we make a school analogy here?
01:22Like first day of training camp, I guess, would really be the first day of school.
01:25But you know, I guess the captain's practice would sort of be like a orientation, so to
01:30speak.
01:31No, it's like you roll in, you got your new Heelys that your mom bought you at Target.
01:35You have like the new backpack that your mom, that your mom bought you at Target.
01:40You've never had that accent was like almost a little new, like it wasn't an English accent,
01:44but it was, it was like right on the edge and a little bit there was a little of a blend.
01:48But you got that.
01:50You got your new backpack, the little Bratz dolls font on the side of it.
01:54Yeah.
01:55Yeah.
01:56Apple bottom jeans.
01:57This feels like I went to high school in 2006.
01:58Yes.
01:59I didn't have the boots with the fur.
02:00I had, I had the apple bottom jeans.
02:02No.
02:03Um, but no, it does feel like, yeah.
02:04New school year.
02:05So, you know, your old friends chopping it up and then you get right back into the swing
02:09of things where it's all right.
02:11Also you get flooded with tweets being like, when's Jeremy Swimmer going to sign?
02:14You're like, we're back, baby.
02:16We're locked in.
02:17It's all that matters.
02:18It's what matters most.
02:19Uh, we'll get to Swayman in a bit cause he was there at captain's practice, uh, which
02:24again is not a surprise.
02:26That's not some, you know, you don't have to be on the team to be a captain's practice.
02:29Chris Wagner was there in his Colorado avalanche gear.
02:32Welcome site.
02:33By the way.
02:34I will always pull zone.
02:35Yes, exactly.
02:36Well, I saw the, I was next to you and I saw the like avalanche gear and it was a righty
02:42and I kind of see the face and I said, Oh my God, that's Chris Wagner.
02:45Of course it is.
02:46So nice to see him back.
02:47Yeah.
02:48If they got in like McKinnon or someone like that, that would have rocked early on dry
02:51cycles there.
02:53We'll also get to him.
02:55But the big news of Tuesday was Brad Marcian spoke to the media and uh, mentioned that
03:01he had three surgeries this summer, three, uh, elbow groin abdominal.
03:07Um, so that's three surgeries.
03:10Uh, I think Don Sweeney had told us back at the end of the year that everybody would be
03:13fine.
03:14There were going to be no surgeries.
03:16Turns out Brad Marcian had a three.
03:18Um, now he says he'd like to be ready to get, uh, to start, uh, for training camp.
03:24Uh, it doesn't seem like opening night is in question.
03:27That seems as of now, according to him, um, that seems to be, um, no problem.
03:33Uh, one other interesting though, that he mentioned was he had not started getting back
03:36on the ice and training until two weeks ago.
03:39Uh, so again, that's kind of why training camp, you know, he may not be out there for
03:42days one or two or however long the beginning will be.
03:45Uh, but what's your reaction to three surgeries?
03:49I mean, listen, it's not ideal to have, you know, to be under the knife that amount when
03:54you've got over a thousand games tacked on your frame, you're, you know, 36 going on
04:0037.
04:01I know, I know.
04:02I think he turns 37 like in May.
04:03So very late into the year, but still 16th NHL season.
04:06Um, we got to make them sound as old as possible.
04:10Yes, exactly.
04:11He'll be 40 in three years.
04:13Yes.
04:14He used to watch rug rats on T no, he used to watch TV Ninja Turtles is I think his go-to,
04:19but, um, not to further age him, but, uh, I mean, listen, anytime you've got that much
04:25mileage, I'm taking that much punishment.
04:26It's not ideal, especially when it's, you know, he even mentioned like it gets tougher
04:31and tougher every year.
04:32You know, the league is getting faster, younger players coming to leave with much more skill
04:37and that, you know, let's not say that he's, his days are numbered or he's looking over
04:41a shoulder and like that.
04:42He's always had that mindset of, you know, his spot on the roster is never safe, even
04:46though he's the captain.
04:48And I think he's a pretty clear lock to make the team.
04:51Um, he's had that mindset ever since he's been, you know, a rookie trying to carve out
04:55a, a fourth line spot on this team way back when.
04:58So, um, I'm not concerned in terms of like, you know, this is more of showing that he's
05:04at the end of his ropes or we're expecting a 40 point Caesar or anything like that.
05:09Hell like even looked at, he mentioned that I didn't be elbow was bothering him a whole
05:13year last year, which you look at how often, especially the year went on, he was really
05:17misfiring on those one-timers on the power play.
05:20Maybe you can kind of draw a little bit of correlation there.
05:22Maybe it was that elbow that was bothering him.
05:24Um, so who knows, maybe it could be like the, the double hip surgery where, you know, he
05:29gets a clean bill of health and this helps him out.
05:31Even though he's maybe a little bit slow to start the year in terms of his ramp up,
05:35but it could benefit him in the long haul.
05:37But still, it's one of those things where the more you go under the knife, you know,
05:41at his age, it does start adding up.
05:43So I don't think this is like a stark sign that this is going to like his production
05:48is going to dip or anything like that.
05:49But it is a reminder that he is 36.
05:52Like these things are going to become more commonplace.
05:54And I don't think that means that Bruins fans should be bracing for a big dip or anything
05:59like that.
06:00Again, he is starting a little bit maybe slower out of the gate this year as you try to get
06:04back up to what he mentioned, like the conditioning and physical part of it as opposed to fatigue
06:10or you know, this is, I mean, I think it's also important to know that like, even though
06:13he's had all these surgeries, it's not like there's some guys who go through all this
06:17and it's like, yeah, I'm done.
06:19Like Bergeron again, probably like dude won the Selkies final year, but he's like, fuck
06:23this.
06:24Like I've done more than enough.
06:26It's time to relax.
06:27Like I think Martians still want to play a couple of years.
06:29He's what, 70-ish points away from a thousand, 2026 Winter Olympics are kind of sitting
06:35there on the horizon.
06:36And that's something that, whether he makes the team or not, wants to put his best foot
06:40forward to try to, because that's something that I think means quite a bit to him to represent
06:44Canada.
06:45So I think this is a guy that views this as, you know, being in his contract year, it's
06:49going to be kind of the last hurrah or anything like that.
06:52It's just a reminder that age comes up to everyone, including a guy who's kind of defied
06:57a lot of expectations over the years.
06:59Do I agree with you on all the Martian stuff?
07:00I mean, you think about sort of, um, like I agree with you, I know it's, you know, 40
07:05point season.
07:06God, no, I don't think we're ever going to see that from Brad Martian, at least this
07:09season.
07:10But I think it kind of goes in line with what I said earlier in the off season where it's
07:12like, I don't think you can expect him to be 85, 90 points or anything like that.
07:17And you have to expect that there are going to be times when he looks a little bit slower.
07:21There were some interesting comments though, that make me think otherwise that he made
07:26on Tuesday.
07:27And he was basically asked by Hags, you know, your approach as an older guy compared to
07:32a younger guy, uh, when you're, you know, you're coming in and of course you hear the
07:36prototypical, Oh, you still got to make the team and blah, blah, blah.
07:39But Martian did make an interesting point about, you know, you do see a lot of guys
07:44at his age start to fall off a bit.
07:48And one of the reasons is because you get to that, you know, late thirties and you often
07:53have young kids.
07:54And those kids are playing their own sports.
07:58They're usually around five, six years old, seven, eight, nine.
08:04And you know, your kids are doing fun things.
08:06They have school plays and they have dance recitals and dads and moms can speak on this
08:11a lot better than I can.
08:13But he was just kind of laying that out and he mentioned how, you know, guys start to
08:16focus a lot on that and that's when they can get passed by.
08:20And he, without saying it, kind of implied that, no, I'm solely focused on my career
08:27and I want to continue to focus on this, uh, as the years go on and as he gets older.
08:32And I think that leads us, at least led me to believe that, uh, you know, I don't think
08:38there's going to be some massive fall off with him.
08:40And I think it goes back to what you said of this, the 26 winter Olympics, uh, 70 from
08:45a thousand points.
08:46He wants to do this for as long as he can do this.
08:49I don't think this is going to be, you know, at 39 years old, he's hanging them up.
08:52I don't think his next contract, you know, if it's under three years, I don't think it's
08:55his last.
08:56Um, I think he's going to keep, you know, hammering away at this.
08:59And you look at, you know, most likely a concussion back in the playoffs, you have three surgeries
09:04this summer.
09:05You had double hip surgeries two summers ago.
09:07A lot of guys would say, no, I'm not, I'm done.
09:10There's no reason to keep playing.
09:11I have a Stanley cup.
09:12I've had an awesome career.
09:14He's defied every single odd.
09:16Um, I became captain.
09:17I'm going to walk away.
09:18He's not doing that.
09:20And uh, I, you know, I think there's good and bad to that.
09:23The good for, on the, for the Bruins is that you get a top six legit winger who sets your
09:28culture and all that stuff.
09:30So, um, I think, you know, and, and the negatives would be his own personal health and all that
09:35stuff, but that's not, we're here to talk Bruins and hockey and things like that.
09:38So I think, you know, again, I'm, I'm in your camp where it's like, I don't expect some
09:43drastic fall off from him.
09:45Um, and I think that stuff is interesting that, you know, he sort of shed light on,
09:49uh, why guys can sometimes fall off.
09:52Um, and that, you know, I, I don't think there's going to be that massive dip at least this
09:57year.
09:58I, at least this year, I don't know what the next couple of years are going to look like,
09:59but at least this year, I don't see that, um, being the case.
10:03I also found it interesting.
10:04Uh, you know, said that he expects to play with coil again and how, uh, on that second,
10:09he mentioned kind of what he wants in that second line right winger.
10:11Uh, we'll get to that in a second, but first quick word from our friends over at prize

12:09Now back to the show.
12:11So Brad Marchand shed some light on sort of what he's looking for in that second line
12:15right winger.
12:16And that's something you and I have talked about at length this summer of who's it going
12:20to be?
12:21Fabian Lysel, Morgan Gigi, Trent Frederick, basically what Marchand said was, whoever
12:27is there, don't try to do too much.
12:30Play a responsible game.
12:31Yes, you can dangle through three people.
12:33But what we need is someone who is responsible.
12:36And to me, that sounds like Morgan Gigi and Trent Frederick.
12:39That does not sound like Fabian Lysel, at least right now, obviously, how Lysel does
12:45in training camp.
12:46We don't know yet.
12:47Obviously, training camp has not happened quite yet.
12:50But I do, I did find that comment interesting of okay, he, he wants, I don't know if a rookie
12:56is what he wants on that right side.
12:58Yeah.
12:59I mean, as soon as he mentions like, specifically, like, yeah, you can't just be a guy that wants
13:02to dangle through three players.
13:04I was like, oh, well, maybe Lysel better get ready, get ready to learn defense, buddy,
13:08because that is something we're off the list, like, oh, man, there it goes.
13:13And again, that's not to say that, you know, I think you're setting up these boundaries
13:17of these parameters before camp starts, right?
13:19Like if Lysel is a dynamic player, and he's complimenting getting more out of playing
13:24with Marchand and Coyle, I think you'd roll with that the younger player that, you know,
13:28can thrive in that spot is on an affordable contract is a great asset to have.
13:32And also, it keeps guys like Geeky and Frederick further down the lineup.
13:35I think you'd welcome that situation playing out.
13:39But as Marchand said, it can't be a guy who's not adhering to like the identity of the team,
13:46which is usually just kind of the refined two way play, right?
13:49Like, you look at why, if DeBrusque of, you know, a few years ago, where he was, you know,
13:55viewed as this 25 goalscorer, but still had maybe more to give defensively, maybe he wasn't
14:00going to be a fit.
14:01He was again, like a third line guy, as opposed to where he ended up being with, you know,
14:05Marchand and Coyle and, you know, Bergeron before that, where he rounded out his game
14:09to be a really solid two way guy.
14:10That's not to say that I don't think it's fair even to be like, all right, Lysel, you
14:14need to be a 15 goal, you know, 40 point guy as a rookie, but also like, we need your defensive
14:20metric.
14:21We can't have Jay Fresh have you in like the, you know, 11 percentile of defense or something
14:26like that.
14:27We cannot have you getting roasted on Twitter.
14:30Yeah, so, I mean, I think especially from, you know, Jim Montgomery and the Bruins staff
14:35and all those things, I think you do have to give guys like Lysel a bit of leeway, right?
14:39In terms of, you know, giving him the opportunity to round out his game, go through some of
14:45the growing pains.
14:46It's not going to, even if he makes the team in October, right, like, I don't think it's
14:51going to be something where it's going to be seamless.
14:52It's going to be games where, you know, he'll have zeros on the score sheet.
14:56This is a game where he has a great goal, but he has two goals against off of some missed
15:00coverages on the other end of the ice.
15:02Like it's a 21 year old rookie, right?
15:04Like you're going to go through these growing pains, but if you're the Bruins and you really
15:08want to see what this guy can do, I think you have to stick with him.
15:12Go through the growing pains, go through the ups and downs that I think, you know, hits
15:15every young player in the NHL and see what he has there.
15:18So I think probably for Marchant, it's more of a like, you know, the established veteran,
15:23the established captain, like reinforcing those things.
15:25See, he even mentioned that when he was a rookie, he played on Mark Savard's line.
15:28He was trying to do way too much and didn't go well for him.
15:31Right.
15:32Like it's, I think it's more of maybe him just mentioning like the, the learning curve
15:35and the experience and how to keep yourself kind of grounded when you're in those scenarios
15:39for the first time.
15:40But I think it probably is just a good reminder to, as much as we look at like Lysell and
15:44the skill and all those things is the thing that makes him a really good candidate for
15:47a top six role.
15:49Can't just be a one trick pony or just rely solely on his offense to stick in the NHL ranks.
15:55No, and you also heard Marchant on Tuesday say, you know, we're, we go against teams
16:00top lines.
16:01We're a two way line, like we're a shutdown line and like it does, you know, that goes
16:05along with Lysell, you know, given off what he's shown so far is not a shutdown guy.
16:11He's an offensive, you know, he's dynamic offensively and that's his thing.
16:15I still think that even through training camp, Lysell can prove that he's good enough defensively
16:22and also add some offensive pop to that line.
16:25That is one thing I really want to see in the preseason.
16:27What did those three look like together?
16:32And then again, we can play the game and I'm sure we'll do this a lot during training camp
16:36if Lysell is not on that second line.
16:39Where is he?
16:40Is he on that third line?
16:41Like he's not on the fourth line.
16:43So again, that kind of gets into that whole debate there.
16:48Jeremy Swayman, at practice, or at captain's practice on Tuesday, that was sort of my big
16:54takeaway from the day on ice at least.
16:57I'm curious, did you have any big things you saw, things you liked, anything like that?
17:03I mean, I think definitely encouraging in terms of the attendance was great for a captain's
17:09practice.
17:10You have a lot of guys already there accounted for, a lot of new faces.
17:13You saw the starts of the fourth line there with Beecher, Max Jones, big body.
17:20I think he skates pretty well for that size.
17:22So I mean, I am excited to see how that bottom six kind of rounds out.
17:25If you ask me right now what that bottom six unit is going to be, couldn't tell you.
17:30I think there's a lot to like about what guys like Jones and Beecher and Kassel can do there.
17:36But I think it's the one thing I noticed more than anything beyond you trying to scribble
17:40out the names, looking at like, trying to read the numbers on the back of their helmets
17:44or trying to figure out who these guys are, a lot of size out there between like their
17:49forward core.
17:50You have Brezzo, who was once again at the net front trying to make things difficult
17:53for guys like Swayman and Corposalo.
17:57It should be a really fun team, right, where I think all across the lineup, whether it's
18:00the D core, whether it's the forward grouping, a lot of, I think, untapped potential there
18:05with a couple of guys that, again, it's how I've kind of mentioned it before when you're
18:09trying to gauge where this team is and what they can offer.
18:12Like if you have five, six, seven, eight guys that all have just a little bit more to give
18:18and they can grow in those respective roles, I think there's a lot to like about where
18:21the direction this team is.
18:22And it just feels like there's so many of those guys that they give you another five
18:26to ten points if they carve out another part of their game.
18:29I think just overall, the foundation of what you're trying to build here, you should be
18:33in a pretty good spot.
18:34So it's exciting to see kind of who makes the most of that opportunity going into camp.
18:38Yeah.
18:39And again, if Bruins fans want to see who's making that opportunity and making the most
18:43of it during preseason games, go check out our good friends over at game time.
18:49The summer is coming to an end, but rejoice sports fans, because football season is back.
