00:21I am Evan Maronofsky joined today by Mark Diver.
00:24Dibs.
00:25Evan.
00:26What's up?
00:28Same old, same old.
00:29Getting ready for another weekend of hockey.
00:32That's all there is this time of year.
00:33Just more and more hockey.
00:34And you're right now, you're coming to us live on site, boots on the ground at The Amp.
00:39You're at Providence Bruin's Morning Skate.
00:40So you're, it's like, it's like I'm a studio host, like for like channel seven or something.
00:44And you're, you're the correspondent in the field doing the hard hitting journalism.
00:49Yeah, well, I don't know about that, but I'm hiding up here in the suites where it's quiet
00:55and, uh, you know, normally they wouldn't let me, uh, let me be up here.
01:00Like during a game, there'll be people and stuff, but, uh, there's nobody here.
01:04So you got to stay, you got to stay there all day and just claim it as your people who
01:09have tickets to it.
01:10Sorry.
01:11You weren't there at 12 in the afternoon.
01:12Goodbye.
01:13See ya.
01:14I could do that, but I don't think I will.
01:16Yeah.
01:17It's a press box.
01:18View is better.
01:19Anyways.
01:20Um, interesting times in the land of the Boston Bruins.
01:23Uh, so I want to tell you a little funny story.
01:25So Thursday night, um, tickets were relatively cheap to the Bruins stars game.
01:30And I got to shout out our good sponsor over at game time for her great, a great experience.
01:35They cheap seats, very easy to get tickets, uh, game time really hooked it up.
01:40So shout out to them, uh, use our promo code CLNS and, uh, my girlfriend and I went, she
01:45lives down the street from the garden and we go and it's Bruins stars and, uh, she's
01:50not the biggest hockey person in the world, but she gets into the game and, uh, halfway
01:54through the third period, she goes, uh, I'm bored.
01:57I said, you and me both.
02:00I think that's a lot of people right now.
02:03That's a lot of people right now.
02:04Um, and Bruins lose five to, uh, to the stars.
02:09That is three straight no win games.
02:11Obviously they had the Utah overtime loss last Saturday.
02:16Um, and it's hard not to ask this question.
02:20And I know that it, it seems early to ask this, um, but I keep kind of going back to
02:26it.
02:27And it's, are we watching the final days of Jim Montgomery's head coach of the Bruins?
02:32And I think it's a valid question to ask, um, because again, I think you look at sort
02:36of the lead up of the last week, you take into consideration, they have not signed him
02:40to an extension yet, to the best of our knowledge, it has not been public.
02:43Um, so I just, I don't know, I, I, I really do wonder if we're kind of watching the end
02:49here because the last week things are not adding up there.
02:52They're under 500.
02:53Um, I know it's still the start of the year, but you know, it is professional sports teams
02:59when they want to spark, do fire the coach.
03:01I wonder if we're getting to that time.
03:04Well, uh, I don't know if we are, but it's certainly a fair, uh, question to ask at this
03:13point.
03:14Um, you know, especially after last night was, last night was bad last night was bad.
03:21And, uh, one thing that struck me, uh, you know, watching from home is the postgame interviews
03:29with pasta and Marsha and they just, they looked stricken, you know, they just looked
03:38like a, you know, like they were kind of searching for answers, uh, which, you know, I think
03:43wouldn't be a surprise at this point, but, you know, there was no, uh, at least that
03:47I saw no, I will get them next time.
03:50Or I saw positive signs or whatever it was, it was just grim.
03:55So, uh, you know, when, uh, and the boredom thing, you know, when, when fans are bored,
04:03that's, that's, uh, that's a red flag.
04:06Um,
04:07Well, I wouldn't go out too much off my girlfriend, but then I got to defend the Bruins a little
04:13bit.
04:14I get what you mean.
04:15Watching from home, you know, yeah, there was a, there was some boredom there.
04:21You didn't feel like they were going to do it in the third period.
04:23They played better, but, uh, you know, I was struck by, uh, by the difference in skill
04:31between the two teams.
04:33Now Boston is, is in a trough right now.
04:36They're, they're not playing well.
04:37So is it fair to judge them off of last night's game or the previous one in Nashville?
04:43Well, probably not, but, uh, boy, Dallas and Dallas is a Stanley cup contender, right?
04:49A lot of people are, some people are picking them to, to win the cup and they're legit.
04:54But, uh, I mean, they, they were the better team by a mile last night.
05:00And, uh, that's after the, you know, the Bruins of the moves they made in the off season and
05:06filling the holes, the perceived holes, uh, via free agency and such, uh, that had to
05:12be a discouraging, uh, effort, not effort, but a performance last night for the, for
05:18Boston and management I'm sure is, uh, searching for answers at this point.
05:24And what are the answers?
05:25I don't know.
05:26Everyone's got to play better.
05:27You know, they got to play better.
05:30It's the old Belichick thing, you know, it is better play better.
05:34By the way, that Dallas stars team boy, can that Wyatt Johnson play that kid is freaking
05:40good.
05:41And that sort of adds a little, you know, a little salt, uh, in that, in that 2021 wound,
05:47which I want to get to later.
05:48Um,
05:51And to, we can, we can get to that later, but, you know,
05:53Yes, but they look, they are, they were so much faster and they were more skilled and
05:58they generated chances better.
06:01And, uh, you know, again, you just go over this last week, cause I remember, I mean,
06:05you know, it was just a little over a week ago.
06:07The Bruins had a really good effort in Colorado, beat them five, three.
06:11Um, then they have that, you know, two to one overtime loss in Utah, obviously Montgomery
06:15makes some headlines with the way he yelled and sort of, you know, gave Marshawn a tap
06:20on the bench.
06:21Uh, they have a really hard practice on Sunday to try to get the guys going.
06:25They have a horrible effort in Nashville, lose four to nothing on, um, on Tuesday.
06:31Meanwhile, Montgomery is juggling all the lines, trying out different combinations.
06:35Um, and again, they lay another egg on Thursday night and there's no five on five offense.
06:42I mean, that is toast right now.
06:44I mean, the last five on five goal they had was Cole Kepke against Utah last Saturday.
06:49Um, that posturing on goal on Thursday was four on four.
06:52Uh, then they had the Brazil goal was power play and they had no goals against Nashville.
06:58So the offense has dried up, looks helpless.
07:01No line.
07:02I mean, the fourth line was working.
07:04I mean, we can't expect them to be the way they have been early on every single game.
07:09The line, you know, juggling the lines doesn't really work.
07:12Montgomery has Patra on the third line, right wing spot on Thursday, which I don't get.
07:18So again, like we're recording this as the Boston Bruins are practicing as well.
07:23And uh, they have Marsha and Coyle and Patra together on that second line.
07:26So I like that move.
07:27I think that is a move to try to generate some offense, but I mean, you've been covering
07:32this a lot longer than I have.
07:34And when a head coach, when those moves start not really working and the team has high expectations,
07:40which this team does, they do, and a lot of it, yes, can be chalked up to guys like Morgan
07:45Geeky and Trent Frederick and, and, uh, Charlie Coyle and, uh, even, you know, before last
07:51night, Breazeau and these middle six guys, just not really performing Brad Marsh and
07:55in there too, but add in the fact that the coach still does not have a contract extension
08:00after this year.
08:02And I think this does sort of, you start to get the wheels turning on that.
08:06And you have Jay Leach on the bench, you have Joe Sacco on the bench.
08:10Like to me, I look and say, they're going to need to turn it around heavily in the,
08:15in this next week or two, or I think you and I could be sitting here two weeks from
08:19now going, all right, well, what can we expect from Jay Leach as the Bruins head coach or
08:23what can we expect from Joe Sacco?
08:25And like, I, I think I'm with you on this, like you and I both are very entrenched in
08:30the college world.
08:31And I think it is, I think it's good for coaches to be in a place for a while because it takes
08:35a while to cook.
08:36You look at Colorado, you look at Tampa Bay, they didn't pull the plug on those guys early
08:41when they could have in both situations.
08:45But the reality is when the, if the voice starts, you know, not really hitting the players,
08:51then that's when changes are made.
08:53And I think we're near it.
08:54We're not at it.
08:55We're not at it.
08:56But I think we're, we're on the road, the Bruins are on the road to that.
09:01I think.
09:02Well, you may be right.
09:05You know, uh, you know, there's been a lot of turnover since, uh, since they let Bruce
09:12Cassidy go.
09:14A lot of turnover, uh, but, uh, at some point, you know, and you kind of say this, I think
09:22this over and over when coaches are about to get fired or do get fired is it's on the
09:28players, but the coach bites the dust oftentimes.
09:31100%.
09:32Yes.
09:34You know, the old thing, you can't change all the players.
09:37Well, they changed a lot of the players now from three years ago.
09:40And I don't know, Monty's, I looked up Monty's winning percentage since coming to Boston.
09:47The points percentage is like seven 50.
09:50It's insane.
09:51It's insane.
09:52Yeah.
09:53And you know, and you, you know, and maybe you're going to let this guy go.
09:56I don't know.
09:58Uh, I guess that could work depending on who's next.
10:02And whether, you know, whoever it is can kind of spark them or, you know, try some
10:12different ideas.
10:13I'm sure they're, they're knocking ideas around in the coach's room every day.
10:18And the guys that, you know, the guys we're talking about maybe as successors, they're
10:23in there, they got ideas.
10:26So, you know, how many, how many, uh, how many different ways are there to, uh, to kind
10:33of make this work?
10:34Uh, you know, at some point that guys like, you know, pick a name, Zaka, McAvoy has McAvoy
10:43been great.
10:44You know, they got to play better.
10:47Well, that's the other, that's the, that's the thing is this roster is not performing
10:53at all.
10:54Like I had high, I had high expectations for this group.
10:57Like I D I, I think this is a legitimately good team.
11:00I think they should be looked at as a cup contender.
11:03At least I felt that going into the year when I watched them play Dallas last night, it's
11:06like, geez, that is a night and day difference.
11:10Holy crap.
11:11But like, I even think like Elias Lindholm got off to a good start.
11:15I haven't noticed him a lot the last couple of games.
11:18Like that has not looked like a number one center to me.
11:20So I, you know, I do wonder if we hit a point where like they fire Montgomery in two weeks,
11:25if this continues and maybe they get a little bit of a spark from whoever they, you know,
11:29they promote Jay Leach, they promote Joe Sacco, they get a little spark, but the same problems
11:34reoccur.
11:35And it's like, all right, it isn't the coach.
11:36It's the roster because Montgomery, I mean, the reality is obviously the 2023 playoffs
11:41will always be a stain for Montgomery, you know, and it's just the way it is.
11:45But that was a hell of a regular season.
11:47And last regular season was, I think, his best coaching job.
11:50I mean, that team, to me, was worse on paper than this, than this team by far.
11:54I mean, you had, you didn't really have a true number one center, you know, Patra gets
11:59hurt.
12:00You've got like JVR stepping into big roles and like you got to the second round and you,
12:07you were a, one of the best playoff, one of the best teams throughout the year.
12:10You were in first place, I think for most of last year, if memory serves.
12:14So like Montgomery is a good coach.
12:16I don't think that's the problem.
12:18I just, I wonder if either the room has tuned him out or, and I think the second option
12:24is the more likely one.
12:26They ain't performing.
12:28They're not.
12:29I mean,
12:30No, they're not.
12:31And, you know, we hear endlessly and I talk about it as much as anyone about the, the
12:39culture, the Bruins culture.
12:42Everyone talks about the culture.
12:44Everyone's trying to emulate it.
12:46Guys on other teams talk about it.
12:48Well, where's the culture now?
12:51What's going on with the culture?
12:52You know, I don't, I don't have an answer to that one, but you'd think, and, okay, so
13:00two, three, I don't know, two and a half bad games here.
13:04Okay.
13:05The Utah one, I mean, they were ahead by a goal with what, 10 minutes left.
13:09I mean, that wasn't a total disaster, but the last two have kind of been, but I don't
13:15know, two games and you, and you flush the coach.
13:18I don't know if that's the move at this point, but no, I agree with you.
13:23I don't, I don't think it's the move right now, but I wonder if in two weeks, if this
13:26continued and they were, what if they, you know, go into the game against the Leafs tomorrow
13:33who also are coming off, you know, a bad performance last night and one where the coach was, was
13:40yelling at guys on the bench, you know, sounds familiar, but you know, what if, if they get
13:45blitzed by the Leafs tomorrow, I mean, holy cow, all, all bets might be off, you know,
13:51this isn't a, I mean, if they, if they fire the coach and hire a new one, that'll be three
13:59new, three head coaches in what, three years, four years.
14:04For the Bruins, it would be, yeah, Cassidy fired in 22, Montgomery fired in 24, if that's
14:14what ends up happening and someone hired, yeah, and the new guy that, and that's not
14:18a stable, that's not what's good organizations do.
14:21No, it's not.
14:22Remember that.
14:23And you know, and Don Sweeney, you know, is not a guy who is prone to rash moves at all.
14:31This guy is patient and he will wait and he will wait, you know, until the time is right
14:36or, you know, whatever, but it would be on the Patriots Super Bowl parade.
14:44There won't be one of those this year.
14:45No, there won't, there won't, but it would be unlike him to act rashly in this situation,
14:52but who's to say that, you know, it's not his, it's not completely his call.
15:00Somebody, somebody above him on the, on the food chain may make, make that decision for
15:07him.
15:08We don't know.
15:09And I think it is also pressure on him, there's pressure on Sweeney.
15:12A lot of these are his moves.
15:14Max Jones, Randy Tufte, Elias Lindholm, Nikita Zdorov, brought in in the offseason, Kostelik,
15:23who's been good.
15:25So again, like Corpozalo, these are his moves.
15:27So you also have that.
15:28I agree with you though.
15:30Like I, so I keep going back to like, I don't know about Montgomery in the playoffs, but
15:36I do think you have to give the team some time to develop.
15:39I mean, this is, there are lots of new line combinations.
15:43It is a somewhat new team.
15:46They can't start every year like they did the last two years, last two years, they started
15:49out super hot.
15:50They were like the team of October the last two years.
15:52That's not going to be the case every year, but, but I, you know, they do look dead at
15:59the moment.
16:00They just look out of it.
16:02Now I want to bring up an interesting point from Elliott Friedman.
16:04He made on 32 thoughts on, I think it was Thursday, but first quick word from our friends

17:30Now back to the show.
17:32So Elliott Friedman made an interesting point, uh, 32 thoughts and basically said the Bruins
17:37sort of, um, look despondent after those two losses to Florida.
17:42I mean, it's sort of like, you know, if you have these two prize fighters come out and
17:45one of them punches the other in the mouth two straight times and just demoralizes them.
17:51And I think the way they approached Florida and the way they built their team to beat
17:56Florida, we might look back on and go, that was kind of the wrong thing to do.
18:01And it was sort of the way their schedule came out because again, you face them twice
18:04in your first four games and that sort of sets you up to, you know, get a little disappointed.
18:12And I think, you know, I wonder, and I don't know this for a fact, but I do wonder if they
18:15look at it and say, you know, okay, great.
18:17We can beat the Canadians.
18:18Okay, great.
18:19We can beat the Kings.
18:20We can beat, you know, we can beat the abs, whatever.
18:21But we got knocked out twice, two times in a row by the Panthers.
18:26And I do wonder if that really set in a little bit of a seed of doubt.
18:29It shouldn't.
18:30I mean, it's the first two of your first games of the year.
18:33They're going to be, they should be an entirely different team come March, April, and May.
18:38But I do wonder if those Panther losses had a big effect on this team.
18:43Well, that's a good point.
18:45Yeah.
18:46Well, it certainly seems like that's the case.
18:49Yeah.
18:50I mean, the schedule maker didn't do them any favors by setting it up with two meetings
18:56early in the year.
18:58But, you know, it is what it is.
19:02And you kind of have to go, you kind of have to, you know, roll with it and make the best
19:09of it.
19:10You know, winning, beating them in October doesn't really, what does that get you?
19:16You know?
19:17Nothing.
19:18I agree with you.
19:19Beating them in April and May is what the goal is.
19:21And building the team so that they're ready to go in the playoffs is, you know, should
19:29be the goal.
19:30And it probably is on the coaching staff.
19:33But yeah, those two games really knocked them, apparently knocked them for a loop.
19:38And they haven't recovered from it yet.
19:42And, you know, it's interesting that, you know, the Rangers are, you know, beating the
19:45wheels off everyone.
19:48And then Florida goes in there last night and beats them.
19:51So it's like, you know, the heavyweight champion is hard to dethrone.
19:57And you know, the Bruins made their moves with that in mind.
20:01But you know, you want to beat them in the spring, not in the fall.
20:06And boy, it's been tough, tough to dig out of the hole of those two Florida losses early
20:13on.
20:14And they haven't done it.
20:15Well, I think that's the thing, is that I think it did knock them for a loop.
20:20And that's just my opinion.
20:21I'm not like, you know, they're saying it behind closed doors.
20:23Like, I do think that that did make a, that did pack a punch, because again, they talked
20:29all training camp, that game one against Florida, game one against Florida.
20:34And they go out there and just are completely outmatched in that.
20:38I mean, that first game was bad.
20:40The whole thing with, like, Frederick challenging, you know, Kachuck wanting to fight and then,
20:47you know, bluffing his way into he didn't drop his gloves.
20:51You know, it's like, you know, just it keeps happening over and over again.
20:58And they fell for it again.
21:00I got me this time again, the answer is, but they, they got to try something different
21:10when they do.
21:11I don't know when they play Florida again.
21:12But so I don't think it's for a while.
21:14Thank God.
21:15Imagine all four games at the beginning of the year, like all in October, like, oh, that's
21:18great.
21:19Hopefully it's not for a while.
21:21Yeah.
21:22A little interesting tidbit from practice from Boston Bruins practice on Friday.
21:27We're recording it like as it's happening.
21:29Yeah.
21:30Obviously, I'm not there, as you can tell behind me.
21:34But so there was kind of some speculation that that, you know, players showed up late
21:39to practice so that maybe they were having a players only meeting.
21:44Scott McLaughlin just tweeted Marcia and said the delayed start to practice today was just
21:47because a video session and an NHL related meeting ran long, says there was no players
21:51only meeting.
21:53So again, I was going to bring that up if they were actually having a players only meeting.
21:57They didn't.
21:58My guess is if they lost, if they lose to Toronto on Saturday, there might be a players
22:02only meeting.
22:03You know what they say about players, players only meetings.
22:07You know, if you have a players only meeting, that's like a last resort, right?
22:12But if you have one of those and then you lose the next game anyway, then what do you
22:15do?
22:16That's the problem.
22:17Yeah.
22:18They you know, it's interesting.
22:19Like, I remember this was 2011 when they lost those two straight to Montreal out of the
22:23gate in the playoffs.
22:24They didn't have like an off day and like Placid or something like, yeah, and they just
22:29did like non hockey stuff.
22:31Like I like I wonder if if if that comes in the car, by the way, it's only been two regulation
22:38losses in an overtime.
22:39Like, right.
22:40Like this is not the end of the world.
22:41I think people are just so conditioned and we are so conditioned to this team just being
22:44so great in the regular season.
22:46We expect this in the playoffs.
22:48But in the regular season, it's, you know, usually a little bit of a higher standard.
22:53And it's funny, like, I don't know how much of that Amazon Prime documentary you watched,
22:58but I found it interesting.
22:59I watched the first two or three episodes and I just haven't watched the rest.
23:04The Nashville one was fascinating when they didn't let them go to the YouTube concert
23:09at the sphere.
23:10Like Barry Trotz came in and was like, you guys have lost like eight in a row.
23:12Like there's no way in hell you're going to that YouTube concert.
23:16And then they, you know, went on a tear the rest of the way.
23:20So maybe they need the Bruins need to plan, like, go to a big event.
23:24And then they need Sweeney to come in and like throw a Gatorade bottle or Gatorade jug
23:27that you're not going to set.
23:29I'm trying to think of someone that's coming here.
23:31Someone I saw a little big town is coming to the TD Garden on Halloween.
23:36So maybe no little big town concert, guys.
23:38All right.
23:40How's it going?
23:41No Patriots game on Sunday.
23:42That's right.
23:43Thank God.
23:44Thank you, Sweeney.
23:45Thank you, Don.
23:46You saved me.
23:47I appreciate you.
23:51One thing I've, you know, has crossed my mind.
23:56I have a friend who works for another team and every year for like, I don't know, many
24:02years in a row, he's like, I don't know how the Bruins do it.
24:06You know, one of these days it's going to all fall apart.
24:10The roof's going to cave in.
24:11All these, you know, bad drafts and, you know, bad signings and this and that.
24:15It's going to all cave in on them.
24:18And every year it's like, geez, I don't know how they're doing it again.
24:22They're, you know, the roof isn't caving in.
24:24Well, this time, I don't know.
24:26Yeah.
24:27It's only two games, but I don't know.
24:29It's they're going to have to figure, figure something out here.
24:34Maybe it is.
24:35Maybe it finally is.
24:36Because you're right.
24:37Every year now, a lot of national people, um, kind of predict they don't, you know,
24:43they either don't have the Bruins and sort of the cup contender group, or they say, Oh,
24:47this is the year the Bruins finally don't make the playoffs.
24:49And that the, as you said, the bad drafts catch up to them, um, hasn't happened yet.
24:55Is it this?
24:56I don't know.
24:57I think we're too early in it to really know, but I think that's an interesting point.
25:01Last week on Elliott Friedman, the podcast, they were actually debating whose roster
25:08would you rather have Ottawa's or Boston's?
25:12And then who, who would you rather have Buffalo or Boston?
25:16It's like, Oh, the lack of respect, the lack of respect, I mean, come on.
25:23Oh, I mean, I get the infatuation with young talent like Stutzler and Brady Kachuk, but
25:29come on.
25:30I mean, seriously, I tweeted a few weeks ago, like I like Brady Kachuk's game.
25:36I do.
25:37And I think he will have a good career and promising career and all that stuff.
25:40But every time I see him do one of his antics, the senators are down like four to one.
25:44Yeah.
25:45And it's like, it's every time like, Oh, he's mocking Lane Hudson, you know, with his, you
25:49know, head fakes.
25:50Oh, the senators are losing three to one at the end of the third period.
25:53Like it's never, you know, him up a ton or anything.
25:57So yeah.
25:58And then the Sabres are their own disaster.
26:00So we'll see what, we'll see what ends up happening there.
26:02I want to get into some solutions.
26:04We're not all about problems here.
26:05We're going to talk about some solutions.
26:07First, a quick word from our friends over at game time.
26:11There's nothing like watching an NBA or NHL game live.
26:14The energy in the building, the sounds on the ice or the court, the memories you make
26:18with family, friends, and other fans, it's unmatched.
26:23And the coolest part is when strangers sitting around you become your best friends.
26:26You can make these memories with game time.
26:29Game time has a new feature called game time picks that makes getting tickets to see your
26:34favorite teams play live even easier.
26:37Game time picks filters out the fluff to show you only incredible deals on great seats.
26:41So you don't have to waste time searching through thousands of tickets.
26:45Curation makes it easier to save more on sports, concerts, comedy, and theater.
26:49When I use game time, I also love the flash deals, which helped me get discounted prices
26:53on really good seats.
26:56Plus, who doesn't love seat views, which give a panoramic view from your seat in the
27:00app before you buy.
27:02So take the guesswork out of buying tickets with game time.
27:06Download the game time app, create an account, and use code CLNS for $20 off your first purchase.
27:12Again, terms apply.
27:13Create an account and redeem code CLNS for $20 off.
27:20Download game time today.
27:21What time is it?
27:22It's game time.
27:24Now, back to the show.
27:55the show.
27:56It's game time.
27:57It's game time.
27:58It's game time.
27:59It's game time.
28:00It's game time.
28:01It's game time.
28:02It's game time.
28:03It's game time.
28:04It's game time.
28:05It's game time.
28:06It's game time.
28:07It's game time.
28:08It's game time.
28:09It's game time.
28:10It's game time.
28:11It's game time.
28:12It's game time.
28:13It's game time.
28:14It's game time.
28:15It's game time.
28:16It's game time.
28:17It's game time.
28:18It's game time.
28:19It's game time.
28:20It's game time.
28:21It's game time.
28:22It's game time.
28:23Well, I don't have a better option than him.
28:27You know, I don't know.
28:32I don't want, you know, I hope the kid succeeds.
28:35I, you know, I got nothing against him.
28:37But I don't know if he, I don't know if he's the guy at this point in his career and where
28:45he's at.
28:46Is he ready to do that?
28:47Is he ready to help a good team in the top six?
28:51I see him getting.
28:52Yeah, he made a nice play last night on the goal.
28:54No question.
28:55I see him getting bounced around left and right.
28:58He's getting crushed.
29:00He's getting, you know, knocked off the puck.
29:03I mean, you know, the physical part, you know, he's not a physical player.
29:10You don't expect that of him.
29:11But, you know, protecting pucks and carrying pucks without getting knocked around is a
29:18requirement.
29:19If you're going to play in the top six.
29:22And he's at a disadvantage there.
29:26So I don't know.
29:28Maybe a temporary spark.
29:30But long term, I don't think he, you know, I don't see him as the answer this year.
29:36Down the road, yeah, maybe.
29:38Maybe he can be that guy.
29:40But to help them get out of this situation that they're in, I'm not, I mean, give it
29:47a try.
29:48What have they got to lose at this point?
29:51You know, who else would you try?
29:54You know, I hear everyone wants to bring Lysell up, you know.
29:59And at some point, they will.
30:02At some point, they will bring him up.
30:04He's going to get an NHL opportunity this year.
30:07Is this the time?
30:08Geez, I don't know.
30:10If you bring him up and he falls on his face for whatever reason, he's not ready or, you
30:15know, whatever the reason might be.
30:18Are you putting him in a position to succeed if, you know, you're kind of plugging him
30:24in there and hoping that he can provide a spark?
30:26I don't, you know, I don't know if he's that guy.
30:29He's not a spark plug type of player, you know.
30:33He's a very talented, skilled, fast player.
30:36But, you know, I don't see him as a spark plug.
30:41How has he been so far this year down there?
30:44He's been okay.
30:46He's been okay.
30:47Last Sunday, he was very good.
30:50He got three penalties, you know.
30:53Oh, it fit right in in Boston.
30:55Yeah.
30:56Perfect.
30:57But two of them were in response to him being roughed up by Springfield.
31:02But he had a good game that day.
31:04And what I said at the time was that he's engaged.
31:08He's engaged on that day.
31:10There's too many times when he's not engaged.
31:13You know, that's been a thing.
31:15But, you know, throughout his time here in Providence.
31:18But he was good on Sunday.
31:21He had a highlight real goal on Saturday, which I'm sure you saw.
31:25And people point to that and say, see?
31:28There it is.
31:29He's ready.
31:30My response is, did you see?
31:33Do you think that move is ever working ever again?
31:36Like, that move is not going to work.
31:39You know?
31:40No.
31:41The poor guy who was on D there is like, holy shit.
31:46I can't believe I got beat on that.
31:49You know?
31:50Yeah.
31:51But, you know, like I said, he's not a spark plug.
31:57That's not what he is.
31:59And I think putting him with a play driver is important.
32:03It might work.
32:05But, you know, what was interesting about Sunday, in my opinion,
32:09is they put him with Patrick Brown and Riley Durant.
32:13Two guys who, you know, they don't take shifts off.
32:18They're going, going, going.
32:21And, you know, I don't know if they dragged him along with them
32:27or whether he was just ready for a good game that day.
32:30But that line was good.
32:33You know, he wasn't with Merkuloff or Letary, you know,
32:38kind of a skill line.
32:39It was with more of a meat and potatoes line.
32:42And he responded with a really good game.
32:45And they're together again tonight and we'll see what they bring,
32:49you know, against a really strong Hershey team.
32:54You know, we'll see what he brings tonight.
32:56But, I mean, I want to see him string together some good games
33:03like last Sunday.
33:04Say four or five good games.
33:06I don't want to see him called up because he had one game
33:09or two good games.
33:11You know, I think it's got to be more than that, you know,
33:15before he gets the call.
33:17But if they continue to struggle, then, you know,
33:21I think you probably will see him sooner rather than later.
33:26And whether that's the right move, you know, who can say?
33:29But he's going to get up there.
33:31I don't think there's any question about it.
33:34But, you know, like I said, I'd like to see him earn it more
33:39with a string of strong games, you know, before he goes up.
33:44Making it on his timeline instead of making it on the team's
33:47where it's like you've earned the right to go up there.
33:50You're playing well.
33:51All that.
33:52I completely get that.
33:53I think it's interesting because, you know, again, like they've
33:57tried Geeky in that spot.
33:59Hasn't worked.
34:00Didn't work.
34:01Again, it fascinates me that guys like Geeky and Frederick.
34:04I know it's only been seven games.
34:06So, like, you know, things can change.
34:08But they're in contract years.
34:10And that's kind of a reason I expected them to be impact
34:14players out of the gate was like you have a lot to play for.
34:17A guy like Trent Frederick ideally would want a year where he's
34:21in the 40-point range.
34:22He's middle six.
34:23Like going to teams next year and saying, hey, I can be a top six
34:27forward.
34:28Haven't seen that yet.
34:29Haven't seen that with Geeky.
34:30Geeky's been scratched.
34:31Haven't seen that with Breazeau until Thursday night.
34:34Like so I think Patra naturally I agree with you.
34:37I don't think he's the long-term fit there.
34:40But I think short-term you try to get a spark.
34:43Like you try to do that.
34:44And then I think if that isn't working and Lysel is playing well in
34:48Providence and strings together some games, you try that.
34:51But again, I still hold I think this team, you know, if they're in
34:56the playoff hunt, which they should be.
34:59They should be.
35:00They're going to be looking for a top six right winger to put with
35:05Marchand and Coyle or to put with whomever is playing with Coyle on
35:09that second line.
35:10Because I agree.
35:11I don't think it's in-house.
35:13And I don't think they I don't think they think it right now that
35:18they have the guy in-house either.
35:20Like I think they're open to that.
35:22I just I don't want to see them trade another first.
35:25Like make another first-round pick.
35:27And I know you and I are big on prospects.
35:29So maybe we're biased.
35:30But like you've got to make first-round picks.
35:33And you know, if this if this team let's just say and we'll probably
35:37talk more about this as the deadline gets closer again.
35:40It's October.
35:41I don't want to waste too many trade deadline bullets.
35:45But again, if it's if they're like third in the Atlantic and they're
35:50you know, a team that might win a round like are you going to really
35:54give up your first for Tyler to Foley or someone like that?
36:00Like is that is that what's going to push you over the line?
36:03I know that they believe that, you know, you can get in to the
36:06playoffs, you know, however, you can get in and make an impact.
36:09And I agree anything can happen in the playoffs.
36:11But like I just wonder if we get to that point in the year
36:14where we're like, yeah, is it really worth giving up a first
36:17for this team?
36:18I don't know.
36:19They haven't shown it so far.
36:20No, they haven't.
36:21And they're good.
36:22I mean, they're going to have to do a lot better going forward
36:25here in order to, you know, kind of make that justify that
36:29kind of a move.
36:32You know, I mean.
36:33Trading picks is, you know, one of the reasons why why they
36:38don't have a lot of prospects in in Providence.
36:42They've traded picks and, you know, they've had to rely on
36:47free agents, you know.
36:50Some of whom are, you know, marginal, marginal NHL players.
36:56So, yeah, I would hate I would hate to see the first round or
37:00go unless they really put it together here and, you know,
37:05make a strong run here over the left between now and say the
37:10trade deadline.
37:11But boy, it doesn't look good right at this point.
37:15And no, you know, I don't know.
37:18Tyler Toffoli.
37:19Yeah.
37:20Great player.
37:22My guy.
37:23And he's not a right winger.
37:24Is is Frank Petronio.
37:26That's who.
37:27Yes.
37:28That would be awesome.
37:29Now.
37:30Yeah, they ran him out of town last time for for a third round
37:34pick.
37:35That turned out to be Jakob Lauko.
37:37Nothing against Jakob Lauko.
37:39But they should have kept.
37:41They should have kept Frankie.
37:43You know.
37:44Well, did you see Lauko got the the chain in Minnesota?
37:47I think it was like last night.
37:48Yeah.
37:49Yeah.
37:50He got the chain.
37:51So he's I saw I watched him score his first goal with the
37:54wildlife.
37:55So I was like, oh, there it is.
37:56Look at that.
37:57I saw I saw a locker room scene from the wild and.
38:04I saw his grapes up on the shelf up above where he sits.
38:08So.
38:10Hey, good for him.
38:11Good for him.
38:12Yeah.
38:13I mean, hell yeah, dude.
38:14Like he's he's a he's an interesting character.
38:16He'll make a good media person down the road.
38:18He'll make a good like podcaster.
38:19He'll be great at that.
38:21I want two more.
38:22Just two quick points.
38:23I want to make before we go.
38:24Number one is deadline stuff.
38:27If they were to trade that first, you hope it's for a
38:29player you can lock up.
38:30You know, you have for more than a year.
38:32And Sweeney typically has been very good with that outside of
38:34obviously the year that they, you know, 22, 23, when like
38:37that was understandable.
38:38That team was so good.
38:39You just put all your chips in the middle of the table.
38:42And then the last thing on Montgomery is because, again,
38:45I don't think the move is to fire him now.
38:47And I always think it's good to let coaches, you know, go and
38:52have the chance to, you know, overcome adversity and all that
38:55stuff.
38:56Obviously, if the if the voice isn't hitting in the room, then
38:59you got to make the tough decisions.
39:01But if you're going to fire him, you have to make sure the guy
39:05coming in, like that you have a legitimately better option
39:08coming in.
39:09And, you know, maybe that's Jay Leach, who, you know, was a
39:12head coaching candidate who's been a head coaching candidate
39:15a number of times.
39:16And the organization had for a long time prior to when he went
39:19to Seattle.
39:20He was interviewed for Montgomery's job, you know,
39:23before Montgomery got it, you know, post Cassidy.
39:26If memory serves, he was.
39:28Yeah, he was.
39:29Jay Leach was interviewed for that, I believe.
39:31Right.
39:32He was a candidate.
39:33Yeah.
39:34So, you know, like you got to be sure he's better or Joe Sacco.
39:38Like, you've got to be sure that he's better or if you're going
39:41to do the interim route, which obviously is what they would do
39:44and then kind of make an evaluation in the year.
39:46You got to be sure if it's not one of those two guys that
39:49it's an outside guy who is much better equipped than Montgomery
39:52because what you do not want is you don't want Montgomery
39:55leaving and doing what Bruce Cassidy went and did.
39:58It was with Stanley Cup.
39:59Like, you don't need that again.
40:01You don't want that again.
40:03And you need to make sure that your next guy is better or
40:06provide something.
40:07You know, is he the happy medium between Jim Montgomery being a
40:11players coach and Bruce Cassidy being a hard ass?
40:14Like, what does that look like?
40:16Because as we said earlier, good organizations are not turning
40:20over coaches year after year.
40:22I mean, you know, we make fun of the Leafs all the time and maybe
40:25they should have let Sheldon Keefe go a long time before they
40:28actually did.
40:29But they gave that guy a freaking long leash and there were a lot
40:32of first round exits in there.
40:34And they let him develop and cook and all that and let him go
40:38when they absolutely had to.
40:40Maybe that was the wrong move.
40:42But I think, like, you know, good organizations don't fire
40:45coaches just, you know, willy-nilly.
40:47And I think that's what you have to worry about here is them just
40:51kind of getting trigger happy with it.
40:53Well, and if you were going to make a change, what if you, you
40:58know..
40:59I like this.
41:00I know where this is going.
41:02I know exactly where this..
41:03I think I know where this is going.
41:05I would love to see my friend Jay Leach get it.
41:08But what if they looked outside, you know, the Bruins
41:12organization?
41:13That would be unlike them.
41:14But, you know, I mean, there's coaches out there.
41:18Joel Quindle is out there, right?
41:20I mean..
41:21Oh, I thought you were going to say Mike Sullivan.
41:23I thought you were going the Mike Sullivan route.
41:26That would be a choice.
41:28Yeah, yeah.
41:29But, you know..
41:30Coaching his son-in-law.
41:31That would be, you know, bringing back a guy who was here once
41:36before.
41:37That would be an interesting move.
41:39But yeah, Mike Sullivan, that would be great.
41:41But, you know, somebody from outside, you know, I don't
41:45know.
41:46I don't know what they would do.
41:48I think it makes sense that it would be somebody internal to
41:54start with and maybe an interim tag if it comes to that.
41:58And, you know, I don't want to make it sound like I'm
42:01advocating that.
42:02I think they should stick it out with Monty for, you know, and
42:06see how this plays out.
42:08But, you know, if you've got ownership, you've got to answer
42:13to ownership.
42:14And, you know, the President Cam Neely is, you know, has..
42:19You don't know where he stands on this.
42:21I'm sure he's not happy with the results recently.
42:25But I don't know.
42:28Do you put in an interim coach and see how it turns out the
42:32rest of the year?
42:33I don't know.
42:34Maybe you do.
42:35Or maybe you look outside.
42:37What's that?
42:38Cassidy was interim, right?
42:40Yeah, he was.
42:41Yeah.
42:42Yeah.
42:43So that's probably..
42:44I would think that's the direction they go would be.
42:47And you promote someone on the bench, move him in.
42:50You know, you know there are going to be a lot of fans being
42:54like, what about Patrice Bergeron?
42:56Patrice Bergeron just retired.
42:58Let him be the head coach.
43:00What about Zidane O'Gara?
43:02His head will be over the glass behind him, you know.
43:05That would be classic.
43:06Get Char on the bench.
43:08Chris Kelly.
43:09Andrew Ferentz.
43:10There you go.
43:11Have everybody.
43:12The 2011 team just behind the bench.
43:14Let them run the job.
43:15What's Johnny Boychuck doing these days, you know?
43:18Exactly.
43:19Get Johnny Boychuck behind.
43:21Have him coach the D.
43:22Chris Kelly can be in charge of the forwards.
43:24Char can run the team.
43:25Got to be like a fourth coach.
43:27So, you know, Tuca.
43:29Tuca is the goalie.
43:30Replaces goalie Bob.
43:31It's a 2011 takeover.
43:32That's what it is.
43:33Andrew Ferentz?
43:34Yes.
43:35Yeah.
43:36You know, I think you need a forward.
43:38If it's Boychuck, Char, and Kelly, you do need a forward.
43:41So, Michael Ryder.
43:42What's Michael Ryder up to?
43:44Maybe Michael Ryder wants to jump behind the bench.
43:46So, yeah.
43:47We fixed it.
43:48We fixed the Bruins bench.
43:50Spring 2011.
43:51This is always fun.
43:52We haven't done one of these in a while, so we'll have to do
43:55one again soon.
43:56What can people look forward to from you?
43:58You have a lot of Providence Bruins coverage, I know,
44:00every weekend.
44:01Yeah, I'll be there this weekend.
44:03You know, I've been watching the colleges, of course,
44:05and I'll continue to do that.
44:07But, yeah.
44:08You know, I watched Arizona State, Providence,
44:10last weekend.
44:11That was interesting to see that team.
44:13Arizona State, that is, you know,
44:15going in to play with the big boys in the NCHC this year
44:19for the first time.
44:20And, you know, I'll be there.
44:22And, you know, this weekend on TV or on my laptop,
44:24I'll be watching BU, North Dakota.
44:26That should be a hell of a freaking matchup.
44:28Yeah.
44:29That's a heavyweight bout right there.
44:31That's a heavyweight bout.
44:32That's a heavyweight bout.
44:33That's a heavyweight bout.
44:34That's a heavyweight bout.
44:35That's a heavyweight bout.
44:36That's a heavyweight bout.
44:37That's a heavyweight bout.
44:38That's a heavyweight bout.
44:39That's a heavyweight bout.
44:40That's a heavyweight bout.
44:41That's a heavyweight bout.
44:42That's a heavyweight bout.
44:43That's a heavyweight bout.
44:44That's a heavyweight bout.
44:45That's a heavyweight bout.
44:46That's a heavyweight bout.
44:47That's a heavyweight bout.
44:48That's a heavyweight bout.
44:49He's stupid, but he's finished the matchup.
44:51Yeah.
44:52That's a heavyweight bout right there.
44:54So, you know,
44:55on and on it goes.
44:57We're just getting started here, really.
45:01It is.
45:02It is.
45:03It is that time of year.
45:04Hockey every weekend.
45:06It's every level.
45:08I'll be at hockey events at NUILLEN Sports Center this weekend,
45:13I'll be at, you know, I'll watch obviously Bruin's Leafs and
45:15it's just so many.
45:17But it's fun.
45:18I mean, that's what you and I do.
45:19So, you know, it's great.
45:22Anyways, that's been Bruins Beat this week.
45:24That's Mark Diver.
45:25I'm Evan Marinovsky.
