00:24That's right, Connor.
00:25That's Connor Ryan. I'm at the front office.
00:27Connor, what is up?
00:29Evan, I'm doing well. How are you doing?
00:32Doing great. Doing great. A little stuffy, I got to admit.
00:35I don't think I'm sick.
00:37I don't think I'm sick.
00:38I think it's... I was in a rink all weekend, Saturday, Sunday.
00:41Then I was with you and everybody at Bruins on Monday.
00:44So it's like... And the seasons are changing and it's colder and you wake up.
00:49I do... I will admit though, I love waking up cold.
00:53Like I love... I hate in the summer when, you know, you're peeling the blankets off.
00:57And it's like, oh, I'm too hot.
00:58Like I'd much rather be too cold while I sleep.
01:01So I do like that.
01:02But then you get out of bed and it just hits you.
01:04So I also don't love that.
01:06I mean, you know, like the...
01:07When you go to like a hotel and it's like the Ramada Inn and the AC is broken.
01:11So it's like 54 degrees the entire time.
01:14Doesn't matter if it's January or August.
01:16I wish every place was like that.
01:18It should be like a nice, a crisp 52 degrees in every building.
01:22Doesn't matter what time of year it is.
01:24Christmas time, that's where you got a fireplace.
01:26That's where you can, you know, get...
01:29You can get warmer very easily.
01:30Like if you're too hot, it's miserable.
01:33I agree.
01:34Too hot is really annoying, especially indoors.
01:37Too cold, you can deal with.
01:39Because again, like if you're too cold, you can throw a sweatshirt on.
01:41You can put a coat on, you know, whatever.
01:43Exactly.
01:44If you're too hot and you're in public, there's only so much you can take off.
01:48There gets to be a point where a little too much, you can't take anything else off.
01:55Okay.
01:56Bruins, obviously, since you and I last spoke, end of last week.
02:00They beat the Kings 2-1 in overtime on Saturday.
02:03They lose to the Panthers 4-3 in a Monday matinee.
02:08Where are you at right now?
02:09What are you feeling at the moment?
02:12I mean, I think going off of that game against Florida,
02:15probably frustrating is once again the apt term for how this team has played so far.
02:21I think there's definitely positives to draw out of what we've seen maybe of these four games
02:26in terms of, you know, especially that fourth line.
02:29By the same token, it's also not a good thing when your fourth line has been your best line.
02:35I think we expected there to be some growing pains for this team,
02:39especially offensively to start the year.
02:41But it's not great when, you know, Mark Kastelik, Cole Koepke, and Johnny Beecher
02:50are their three highest scoring players at 5-5 play.
02:53Do you know who the next player is who has the most 5-5 points for the Bruins beyond that fourth line is?
02:58Do you want to guess?
02:59Is it Charlie McAvoy?
03:01Nope, it is Brendan Carlo.
03:02Brendan Carlo is next.
03:05I love that.
03:06That is not, listen, good for Brendan Carlo,
03:09who, you know, is not known for being an offensive defenseman, for being in that spot.
03:14Not good for the rest of the team,
03:16That's the fact that the Zaka, Lindholm, Pasternak line,
03:20they've had a few good looks during the power play,
03:22but I think they've combined for just five 5-on-5 points to start the year.
03:27The second line of Brad Martian, Charlie Coyle, Morton Geeky
03:31have zero 5-on-5 points so far this year.
03:35Again, I don't know how much you wouldn't get caught up in things
03:39over what has been a four-game sample size,
03:41two of those against, admittedly, a very, very good Panthers team
03:45that even without Chuck and Barkov on Monday,
03:48that's a very good team that I think is clearly in the Bruins' heads
03:52because, once again, they fell into the same traps on Monday.
03:56So you can kind of spin it however you want, Evan, right?
03:59You can look at the fact the offense has not really gelled so far to start the year.
04:05You can look at Florida and how much you want to draw from that
04:08in terms of what I think is clearly the Bruins struggling to play their game
04:13and, more importantly, beat the team on the ice
04:15as opposed to trying to chase these guys around and try to exact revenge.
04:19I think the best way to do that is sending them home miserable with a loss,
04:23but I digress.
04:25But, yeah, I think probably right now it has to be just the uneven scoring output.
04:30We knew going into the year there was going to be growing pains there,
04:33whether it's the middle six, especially with a guy like Geeky in a top-six role,
04:38what he had in the third line.
04:41But I think especially the top line, not maybe landing as many punches,
04:455-on-5 right now,
04:47and you add in the fact that second line is giving you next to nothing
04:49in terms of just tangible production,
04:51that's a little bit concerning out of the gate, I would say.
04:53It is. It is.
04:55And I think it's interesting.
04:57They play the Panthers twice in their first four games to open the season,
05:02and I think the good news for the Bruins is by the end of the year
05:04you hope you're a much better team and that when we look back,
05:07when the Bruins play the Panthers, whenever it is in the playoffs,
05:09we look back and go,
05:10those first two games, first four games of the season,
05:13different team, whatever.
05:15What I think is a little concerning is sort of the line jumbling already.
05:21You saw it in that game against Florida, that second game on Monday,
05:25where Jim Montgomery is shuffling that middle six quite a bit.
05:30And you saw multiple pairings.
05:31You saw shifts of coil taking on the right side of Morgan Geeky
05:35on the third line.
05:36You saw, you know, coil down the middle with Geeky and Frederick.
05:39You see Matt Patra and Breazeau go up with Brad Marsh
05:42and you see sort of the juggling of lines.
05:45And again, we weren't even four games into the season at that point.
05:49Now, I get it.
05:50That second line, you know, hasn't produced really anything for you
05:53offensively, you know, through three games and, you know,
05:57halfway through that Panther game.
06:00But I do wonder if it's sort of a sign, like,
06:04you're already messing with your lines.
06:06You're four games into the year.
06:08To me, and maybe I'm alone in this, but this is how I felt after Monday's game,
06:14it sort of plays into the fact that the head coach doesn't have a contract
06:18passed this year.
06:19Like, I think it all goes back to that, where it's like, I think, you know,
06:24we can get into a debate of, is the seat getting hot?
06:27Because again, like Florida right now is their biggest rival.
06:30It's the team that they've sort of put themselves up against
06:33at the start of the year.
06:34It's sort of their measuring stick.
06:35They're building their team to beat Florida.
06:37You get two tries at them to begin the year.
06:38The first game wasn't even close.
06:40Second game, first 10 minutes, you and I were saying this
06:42as we walked down to the locker room.
06:44Like, first 10 minutes of that game, the Bruins dominated.
06:47And then you fall into the traps of the, you know, and again,
06:51I get Zaka, you know, dropping the mitts with Greer.
06:53I get that, you know, and Montgomery echoed that after the game.
06:58Marshan, you're jumping Schmidt, but you know, Zdorov with the delay game
07:03and McAvoy, you know, going and hunting Zaheighi, cross-checking him.
07:07And like, I know people will get back at me on this one,
07:10but like, you know, that Pasternak-Reinhart play,
07:12I know the refs didn't call anything on the Panthers either.
07:15So I get it.
07:16But like, that is interference.
07:18Like, you did lower the shoulder into him a couple, you know,
07:21seconds after he let the puck go.
07:24So like, and Montgomery mentioned that after the game
07:27in a really short press conference where it's like,
07:29they're playing undisciplined.
07:30They are playing so undisciplined.
07:32And, you know, does that hearken back to like, are they listening?
07:37You know, have they tuned the coach out?
07:39Because again, the undisciplined thing has been a theme through four games.
07:43And by the way, I'm not saying that they have,
07:45but I think it's valid we ask these questions.
07:48And I also think it goes back to, you know, jumbling the lines up.
07:51You know, does Montgomery believe in that middle six?
07:55Is, you know, and I think he's trying to jumpstart this team,
07:58not just to win, but I also think because the more they win,
08:01the higher the chances he gets an extension.
08:03So I think that kind of, I think it all plays into the same things.
08:07Yeah.
08:08And I think it comes down to what we said before the year.
08:10Like if the Bruins aren't certain of what they, you know,
08:14they want to see more from Montgomery,
08:15you're putting him and just the overall team in this,
08:17I don't know if the right word is precarious spot, right?
08:20Where you're creating urgency right out of the gate.
08:23Maybe that's what the Bruins want in terms of like seeing what they have
08:26in a coach like Montgomery and see how he deals with like adversity with
08:30this team that has a lot of moving parts, a lot of new players.
08:34I think they're trying to build a little bit more of a,
08:37a more physical identity.
08:38And maybe that's where some of these growing pains are like, again,
08:41I think the undisciplined play against Florida,
08:44not just be a bright, a by-product of the Panthers,
08:46like making their brains turn to mush.
08:49That I think, you know,
08:51as much as I think Jeremy Swinburne says there's no mental edge,
08:54there's something there that they, they lose it.
08:56But as you said,
08:57it's been the case in these other games against the Kings,
09:00against the Montreal Canadians as well.
09:02They have to clean that stuff up.
09:04And again,
09:05maybe it's just some of the figure of what kind of team you want to be.
09:08This is obviously a team that's bigger, more physical, you know,
09:11and it's maybe the growing pains along the way is seeing what works and what
09:15doesn't work as you try to cultivate this new kind of approach with the
09:19roster that they built this off season.
09:21So I think that is part of it,
09:22but also it goes into just the urgency and the timeline.
09:26And, you know,
09:27as much as you look at this team and I would assume that they expected that
09:31this was going to be a work in progress,
09:33that the growing pains in October and November,
09:37you deal with them now with all these new additions,
09:40if it leads to a team that's built for the playoffs in April, right?
09:43Like that seems to be where you'd expect the Bruins top brass to map out
09:47for this year.
09:48But that does that mesh with Jim Montgomery and his coaching staff when they
09:53are on kind of thin ice in terms of what this contract situation is,
09:56right?
09:57Like we mentioned it before the season started with like, all right,
10:00if Jim Montgomery is here long-term,
10:02of course he wants to give younger players like Laura and Patra.
10:06And at the time,
10:07Lysel time to grow and develop and,
10:10you know,
10:11roll with the punches.
10:12You saw like Potter have an awesome game against the Kings.
10:16And then he has that turn of leads to a short and a goal on Monday against
10:19Florida.
10:20Like you,
10:21you deal with that if it leads to Potter becoming a good player,
10:23but that patience,
10:25it maybe runs thin when it's a coach who is looking at just the baseline
10:29results.
10:30And that's part of the business.
10:31Montgomery has said before that he doesn't care.
10:33You know,
10:34he's,
10:35he can focus on just the day to day things and not worry about his contract.
10:38It's human nature.
10:39When you're on an expiring deal like that,
10:41you have to look at the end results.
10:44And again,
10:45it just falls in line with,
10:46yes,
10:47the Bruins are maybe looking at the long-term of the growth from now until
10:51the springtime,
10:52but is Montgomery on that same timeline or is he afforded that same timeline
10:56when he's in such a precarious spot?
10:58Right?
10:59I think that is how,
11:00how does the,
11:01how does the Bruins ownership and,
11:02you know,
11:03front office,
11:04can they,
11:05you know,
11:06have two different timelines here in terms of what they want the roster to
11:08be from here to there and where they want Montgomery necessarily to be.
11:12Cause it does seem like it kind of splits a little bit in terms of what the
11:15expectations and the timeline is when you have got an expiring contract.
11:19To me,
11:20that's the biggest thing.
11:21What spot are you putting him in?
11:22And you even heard it on behind the B when Sweeney was,
11:24you know,
11:25talking about how,
11:26you know,
11:27that second line right wing spot is still kind of up in the air.
11:28I mean,
11:29geeky has done nothing through four games to make you think he's the long-term
11:32solution there.
11:33Lysel is down in Providence by people.
11:35Well,
11:36I've not watched the Providence Bruins this season,
11:38but you know,
11:39from people who've watched those games,
11:40it doesn't sound like Lysel is playing too great.
11:42You know,
11:43Matt Potts,
11:44obviously we'll talk about him in a second,
11:46you know,
11:47maybe he's a potential fix there,
11:48but like at some point they're also,
11:50I think going to be in the market for a second line right wing.
11:52And does that match up with Montgomery's timeline?
11:54Like,
11:55you know,
11:56Montgomery obviously is a team first guy,
11:57but you have a family,
11:58you know,
11:59you got to have stability in your job.
12:01Like we all want that.
12:02So I don't blame Montgomery for certain things.
12:04There was one thing Montgomery did.
12:06I thought on Monday that looked like a coach who expects to be here long-term or sort of fits in that timeline.

13:35Now, back to the show.
13:37So you mentioned Matt Potra and he had an awesome game on Saturday.
13:41Montgomery called it his best NHL game ever.
13:44But Monday was, I think, a little more eye-opening because you mentioned that turnover he had at the blue line on that shorthanded goal.
13:50But to Montgomery's credit and to, you know, doesn't fall in line with sort of what we just talked about with like, you know, they want to – he wants to win now.
13:59He's trying to figure something out.
14:01He moves Potra up after that.
14:04And I found that interesting because when Potra made that turnover, I was like, alright, how long is that poor kid going to be stapled to the middle of the bench?
14:11Like how long is this going to be?
14:13And he didn't.
14:14He moved him up.
14:15And to Potra's credit, he rebounded after.
14:17He had some really good shifts late in that third period deep in the Ozone.
14:22And I think like out of the last two games, you know, since he came back, I think Potra is a legit bright spot.
14:29Yeah, no, absolutely.
14:31And again, maybe also you look at the fact that Montgomery still, you know, carved out a good amount of time for him.
14:37Maybe that's also a byproduct of the fact that the top six wasn't doing much of anything.
14:42That also plays into it.
14:44But no, I agree.
14:45I think you look at whether it's Potra or even like Laurie who obviously had a tough start in Florida, you know, sits out Thursday's game against Montreal.
14:54And then Montgomery goes right back to him.
14:56And he responds with the primary assist on Postenak's overtime goal against the Kings and scores a goal himself on Monday against Florida.
15:04Really nice goal on Monday.
15:06Yeah, kind of a trademark what you'd expect from a guy with that skill set.
15:10And Mason Laurie.
15:11So I think one, it has to do with the fact that Potra and Laurie are right now offered maybe some of the higher ceilings on your roster in terms of production.
15:21Right. And you're in desperate need of that right now.
15:23So I think that plays into it.
15:24But as you said, even though you have to expect there to be some growing pains along the way with those two young players, this isn't like a guy like Lysel who, you know, is on the outside looking in.
15:35And you might have to stick with him if you really want him to be an everyday NHL or whether that's later this year or the years ahead.
15:41Like if you're Jim Montgomery and you're on an expiring deal, you want guys like Potra and Laurie to step up right now because they can help you right now.
15:50It can only get better if you're here long term.
15:52So I think that also plays into it, because as you said, even with that miscue from Potra, the poise, the playmaking is still there.
16:01And if you have a guy like that who's playing at this level, it doesn't matter kind of who his line mates are.
16:05You're going to generate chances.
16:06And that's something that beyond the fact they haven't been able to score, Bruins aren't doing nearly enough to kind of put quality looks in front of their opposing goaltenders.
16:14Yeah.
16:15And I think you saw in the end of that Panther game where they were in the ozone for so long, cycling, cycling, cycling.
16:20And just how many high danger chances did they get in that sequence?
16:23There weren't many.
16:24And you see a lot of low to high, which is fine.
16:28You expect more offense from the defense, but they're not really shooting the puck that much either.
16:32So it's sort of dumping it down low.
16:34And I think a guy like Potra eventually, and you see spurts of it now, is good at crafty passes to those high danger areas.
16:43And he's not afraid of those high danger areas.
16:45And I think that's sometimes to his own detriment because he gets freaking crushed on some of these shifts.
16:51So you hope that he ends up being OK.
16:53But that drop pass to Frederick early in that first period against Florida.
16:57I mean, you want that kind of confidence out of him.
17:00Low rye at the point, that shimmy shake to the left.
17:03That's what you want.
17:05That's what you hope out of those young guys.
17:07So Potra, low rye, I think have been bright spots over the last two games.
17:11And I think that that's a very good thing.
17:12I want to get another bright spot.
17:13Even Beecher too.
17:15Yes.
17:16Oh, I can't forget Beecher.
17:17Another young guy.
17:18Four points already.
17:19He had a great back check.
17:21That prevented a two on one.
17:23And as you mentioned, the four points.
17:25I want to talk fourth line.

18:41It's Game Time.
18:42Now, back to the show.
18:44So, the fourth line, Connor.
18:45Fourth line, just like we predicted.
18:47I think in our predictions episode, we said Beecher, Kastelik, Riley Tufte.
18:53Or, Kolkepke, excuse me.
18:54That line is going to be incredible.
18:56Leading point-getters through the first four games.
19:00I mean, again, like, and look, I don't think people should be.
19:03Like, we were saying this on the elevator down on Monday.
19:06We're like, you know, we always preface fourth line guys like,
19:09They're not going to give you 30 points.
19:10They're not going to score 20 goals.
19:12I think I've said that like 20 times already this year,
19:14and now they might just out of spite.
19:16They might just do it.
19:19To me, that line is the perfect line against a team like the Panthers
19:24because they play Panthers' style of game.
19:26And I think that's kind of what the Bruins want their team to be,
19:30to play like that, gritty, getting to dirty areas, you know, shooting anything.
19:35I mean, Kastelik's shot goes off Beecher.
19:37Like, that's how they're scoring.
19:39To me, that's like the embodiment, I think,
19:41of what they want the rest of their lines to do.
19:43Now, will that fourth line do that forever?
19:45No, but I think if they continue to play the way they have been,
19:49whether they produce or not, I think is valuable.
19:51Yeah, no, and I think it all just comes down to, like, their motor, right?
19:54Like, even, like, they've got guys like Kastelik and Beecher that are,
19:58you know, big bodies, and they have been physical,
20:00and I think that's obviously welcomed on the fourth line,
20:02but I think it's just their skating and staying with the play.
20:05Like, I feel like Colt Koepke, you've noticed him,
20:08like, a lot of his scoring chances are when he generates stuff.
20:11It's either, like, just driving to the net,
20:13or it's him, like, slipping behind a guy and, like, poke-checking a puck
20:17as they're trying to gather to break the puck out.
20:19Like, he's just always moving, always making something happen,
20:22and, you know, just because you do that and you knock the puck loose,
20:26maybe it doesn't lead to, like, a grade-A scoring chance,
20:29but it leads to more ozone time, and it wears guys down,
20:32and it leads to winning hockey,
20:34even if it doesn't mean a goal right there in that instant.
20:37And I think that's what's been the most encouraging thing is,
20:40you know, it's not like they're just playing this smash-mouth hockey
20:44of just, you know, bowling over every single person.
20:46They're playing All-Star, they're playing the hits,
20:49playing Walking on the Sun.
20:50No, but, like, I think if you're playing to, like, that identity of just...
20:54Walking on the Sun.
20:56It's a good song. It's a deep cut.
20:58It is a great song.
21:00But when you look at just the way they play,
21:02if that's skating and that motor is there for all those guys,
21:06they're going to, at the very least, keep on generating quality ozone time,
21:10and if you're a line that plays a simple brand of hockey like that,
21:13it's going to lead to promising looks.
21:14So, again, I'm not saying, Evan, that they're all going to score 20 goals.
21:18I'm joking.
21:19I'm joking, but I'm saying they've got a pretty winning formula right now
21:23that if they keep up playing that style of play,
21:26they're going to continue to string together really strong shifts.
21:29And right now, you kind of need it, because they've been your best line
21:32and has not even been remotely close so far this year.
21:35Yeah, I think if you're projecting for the playoffs,
21:37I think that's a line that's going to be real good for you.
21:39And, again, it can change a lot.
21:40I mean, like, you know, a lot can change with those guys.
21:43But, again, they've been dominant through four games,
21:46just like we predicted.
21:49I will also leave listeners with this.
21:52Bruins fans have become accustomed over the last two years
21:55to having really hot starts out of the gate,
21:57especially under Montgomery, especially, you know, these last two years.
22:01Don't fret and stress too much if that's not the case this year.
22:05And this team, as we said at the beginning, needs a little time to grow.
22:09They're going to make mistakes, all that stuff.
22:11So, again, I leave you with that.
22:13I leave you with that.
