The Boston Bruins are now 3-2-1 after an OT loss to the Utah Hockey Club. Joey Copponi and Rob Tocci dissect what exactly is going on with this team, why the top 6 is falling short, take a closer look at Jim Montgomery's one-sided screaming match on the bench with Brad Marchand. Plus, the guys ask if this team's oversized defense-first identity was a bit overblown in the preseason. All that, and much more!

00:00Welcome back to bear with me.
00:19The Boston Bruins are three, two, and one, and that's good enough for second in the Atlantic,
00:24fourth in the Eastern Conference, and well, pretty far down in the National Hockey League.
00:29My name is Joey Capone.
00:30That's Rob Tucci.
00:31Rob, how are you doing, buddy?
00:32I'm tired.
00:33How are you doing?
00:34I'm doing okay.
00:35We're brought to you by Prospects, the exclusive daily fantasy partner of the CLNS Media Network
00:38and brought to you by Game Time Tickets, the best place to buy tickets online to sports,
00:42concerts, whatever it is you people go to these days.
00:47The Boston Bruins lost in overtime to the Utah Utahs, Utah.
00:59Bad game, bad game, ugly game, sloppy, a lot of reactions, a lot of overreactions going
01:04around.
01:05And Rob, I would like to get on the show and overreact with you.
01:08How do you feel about doing that today?
01:09I feel so good about that.
01:10That's mostly what we do.
01:12Perfect.
01:13I have some questions in my notes for the show that are so bombastic, but I also don't
01:18feel like they're insane to be talking about right now.
01:24Doing this new way that we've been doing the show where at least the last two episodes,
01:28it's been just one game.
01:30It's so easy to hyper fixate on one game and come away with overreactions.
01:35But you kind of have to, to fill the time.
01:37You do, but I don't like to do that.
01:40I never want bear with me to be like, well, we have to do an hour.
01:43We don't have to.
01:45We're not mandated to do any.
01:46We can do a 10 minute show where we just come on and be like, yeah, pasta look good.
01:49Mashi look good.
01:50So I look good.
01:51See you tomorrow.
01:52We threatened to do a 30 second show in time where it was like a really bad loss.
01:57And we wanted to come on and be like, that sucked.
01:59Thanks for bearing with me and moving on.
02:02We I mean, we could very well easily do that anytime we want.
02:05It's like I'm not here to fill air.
02:06I think these are like legitimate things to talk about because simply put, the team is
02:13not off to the start we expected and the areas where we felt the most confident in them,
02:21they are falling short.
02:24So it raises some questions about the overall construction of the team and whether they're
02:29going to be as good as we thought and if their strengths are going to align with what we
02:34expected their strengths to be.
02:36I don't necessarily know where you want to start.
02:39I mean, we could focus just on this on the ins and outs of the game blow by blow.
02:44But like in terms of an overarching picture of the game, season high in turnovers, tons
02:53of penalties again.
02:54They're up to they've been shorthanded 29 times in their six games.
02:59League leading, right?
03:00I believe that is league leading.
03:02I think it is by quite a good margin.
03:04It's not like we happen to have one more penalty than another team.
03:08It's like we're running away with it.
03:10Yeah, it sounds like us.
03:13So yeah, I mean, anywhere of those things that you want to start, I don't know if this
03:15game deserves blow by blow other than the goals.
03:18It does not.
03:19But where are your feelings at?
03:21What do you think?
03:22And what's the taste in your mouth?
03:23Can you paint me a word picture?
03:25It was just a very strange game to watch and not just because of the time, which definitely
03:29throws you off a little bit, but it felt like neither team was getting consistently
03:33great footing.
03:35But at the same time, like if you go and watch like the 10 minute recap, it looks like the
03:39Bruins are doing really damn well.
03:40And like they did look really good on the power play a couple of times.
03:44And I don't know.
03:46It's one of those games that like as it's happening, it's so mid that it's barely registering
03:50with you.
03:51And then when the game ends, you're like, I don't even know how I feel about this game.
03:56Like it was like such a middle of the road game that my brain barely processed it.
04:02It did process the OT losing goal, which again, I was thinking about that.
04:09It's maybe my fault because I did add the stipulation that if the game is going to end
04:13after midnight, they need to win.
04:16The game ended at 1140 PM.
04:19So that's on me.
04:20I should have added a buffer of about 30 minutes or so.
04:23Yeah.
04:25That would have been real nice.
04:26Yeah.
04:27Yeah.
04:28And any non 7 PM.
04:29Any start beyond 7 PM.
04:30They should.
04:31They have to.
04:32They have to win.
04:33There's something about this is so stupid and not relevant right now, but this is what
04:36the show is.
04:37Welcome to bear with me.
04:38If you're a first time listener, there's something about an 8 PM, like a primetime game start
04:43that feels way later than it does.
04:44Like an 815 830 buck drop like might as well be 10 o'clock.
04:49I don't know what that is, but I think it's like the amount of commercials built into
04:52a primetime game.
04:53It just feels a little longer.
04:54But anyway, any who, anyhow, looking at the penalty minutes thing, just because like you
04:58did bring it up and I wanted to talk about it, I don't have the number of actual times
05:02they've been shorthanded where they rank.
05:04But in terms of penalty minutes, they have 83, which is second behind the Utah Hockey
05:09Club.
05:10I have 85.
05:11It literally was one.
05:13It is one penalty different.
05:15And just to give you some perspective here, sitting at the top of the spectrum in the
05:20other direction is the Winnipeg Jets with 18 penalty minutes.
05:25They're not even trying there.
05:27I mean, listen, boys, get your hands dirty.
05:29That is.
05:30Oh, come on.
05:31It is absolutely insane when you look at it like that.
05:34Also, their power play is, I mean, just unbelievable.
05:38They have the best 43.8% of their power play.
05:42The Jets, the Jets, the Winnipeg Jets of Winnipeg, 0.8% power in the National Hockey League,
05:50the National Hockey League.
05:52This world is so fucked up.
05:54This is gross.
05:56Yeah.
05:57So that's how things are going right now.
06:00The thing with the penalties, though, is, I mean, you're talking about the OT winner,
06:04which is like probably a fine place to start, is that so many of the penalties are just
06:09like meaningless.
06:10Like, I don't mind, you know, matching minors in the scrum or, you know, something rough
06:15to get the boys going, whatever.
06:17A hook on a breakaway to prevent an easy scoring chance.
06:21Yeah.
06:22All the penalties that fans will nod along and go like, hey, got to take it.
06:25You know, those are one thing.
06:27A lot of these are just, they're not like egregiously dumb where you're like, you know,
06:33what is he doing?
06:34Oh my God.
06:35But they are dumb in the grand scheme where it's like, what, what, what were you trying
06:39to accomplish here?
06:41And Pasta's OT penalty is just such a golden example of that.
06:45What are you doing?
06:47Why is your stick there?
06:50You are, it's overtime.
06:51You're in the offensive zone.
06:53It was a stupid, lazy penalty.
06:57Lazy.
06:58And I know overtime is five minutes, but when you take a penalty 11 seconds in to three
07:06on three overtime in my head, the game is over.
07:09Yeah.
07:10I'm like, that's it.
07:11That's it.
07:12Like that four on three is insane.
07:15You should have to score in four on three.
07:18And yes, technically, Utah did not.
07:22They did not.
07:23They scored three and a half seconds.
07:24There you go.
07:25Like right.
07:26Pasta could even like get to the back check out of the box and the puck was in the net.
07:31So to me, that's like one of those like, you know, de facto, the vulnerable minute power
07:36play goals.
07:37One of the, this is, here's an again, if you're a first time listener, just this is a lot
07:41of bear with me.
07:42Bullshit that we're sprinkling into this like oddly serious show that we're doing for us.
07:47But one thing that I learned in that moment was that Utah, anytime a team relocates or
07:53a new team, like you learn all the little things about the arena.
07:56I know where this is going.
07:58When the penalty, when an opposing penalty ends, apparently Utah has decided to play
08:02the law and order, which what?
08:09It's really good.
08:11And there was like one instance, I think it might've been a Linholme who took a penalty,
08:14whoever it was.
08:15It was like, you heard the bump bump.
08:17And then as it happened, he appeared out of nowhere.
08:20It's like, he's like a predator and they're like, he's on, he's loose.
08:25I mean, that's good.
08:26I like that sound for like when they're announcing a, a opposing penalty, you know?
08:32Yeah.
08:33Yeah.
08:34Like, you know, an opposing player is going to the box and they're like, I had two minutes
08:35tripping and can't do that bump bump.
08:38But to be like, shit, here he comes bump bump.
08:41Especially when that sound like, I think most of us associate law and order with like SVU.
08:46That's what I'm talking about.
08:48Like that is a very, very specific sound to be using.
08:52It's not like it's a stretch to be like, you know what?
08:55That's usually associated with.
08:57Right?
08:58Yeah.
08:59Yeah.
09:00It's also very funny that like Utah, the place that we're all like, it's so vanilla cake
09:04mustard, but it doesn't mean anything.
09:06But like, it's so nothing that's wonder bread and they're like, oh, we know it's cool.
09:11One order, you know, we know what the kids love.
09:14We can appeal to the, to the rest of the nation.
09:17You guys can even like think of any other sound effects in other arenas other than someone
09:22does it when the home team's penalty ends, they play like the one up sound from Mario,
09:29which I always, I, yeah, that's fun.
09:31That's good.
09:32I'm not a fan of like too much audio from the, the arena during live play.
09:39Yeah.
09:40Like, I was like, you're allowed to do that.
09:43That feels more like basketball, basketball.
09:45They'll play music like the dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun.
09:49And I'm always like, you shouldn't be able to play music while the game's going on.
09:52But like, they're an entertainment product and they seem to be doing better than the
09:55NHL.
09:56So maybe I shouldn't be giving them notes.
09:57But yeah, no, I'm not, I'm not a big fan of it either.
10:01Real quick, quick tangent here, uh, on the, the new topic of the NHL attempting to expand
10:08the game.
10:09There's one game this evening, this evening being October 21st, Monday.
10:13Yeah.
10:14The NBA season starts tomorrow.
10:17There are 16 games in the NHL on tomorrow night.
10:22What?
10:23Yeah.
10:24What?
10:25The league is playing tomorrow on NBA opening night.
10:30Why the NHL could have foreseen this, understand who you are.
10:40You know what I mean?
10:41Take a minute, put out your schedule second.
10:43You know what I mean?
10:44Like wait for the NBA to put out theirs and then be like, all right, we're going to move
10:48around.
10:49You guys, you know, Lakers Celtics on a Saturday night, you know, maybe we don't try to compete
10:56that night or I don't know.
10:59Also because it's, you know, a weekday, all the earliest game is 6 PM and they're staggered
11:06by 15 minutes.
11:08So it's six and then six 30, six 45, seven, seven, 15, seven 37, 45, eight, eight, 15,
11:14eight, 38, 45, nine, nine, 15, nine 30 and then 10, 15 and then 11.
11:21So okay.
11:22They're doing like the frozen frenzy.
11:26They're doing like the NHL's equivalent of red zone.
11:29Yeah.
11:30So that they are, they're pushing it so hard.
11:32They're manufacturing days, like schedules around that being a good idea.
11:38Is that on NHL network?
11:39The frozen frenzy thing?
11:41Yeah, I believe so.
11:44Which like, I don't think that works the same with hockey.
11:48Like it'll be cool probably, but I don't know.
11:50It's almost cool.
11:51It's almost cool.
11:52I've watched it a few times.
11:53It's almost cool.
11:55But not quite.
11:57Not quite.
11:58And the thing is, too, it's like, okay, so you watch the final five minutes of this game
12:01and then you watch the final five, 10 minutes of this game and it's not like you're going
12:05back and forth.
12:06Like the thing that's cool about red zone is they're all 1 PM start.
12:08So it's like, oh, look at this.
12:09Oh, look at this.
12:10Oh, look at this.
12:11I don't know.
12:12They're trying to avoid like too many intermissions happening at the same time.
12:17Also just dawning on me.
12:18That's why the game's at 8 45.
12:23That's why we're like, why the fuck is a game starting at 8 45 frozen frenzy?
12:28That's why.
12:29Because the NHL is attempting to sell their product.
12:33Well, you know what?
12:34Tomorrow sounds like a great night for Tuesday, October 22nd.
12:37You know, that sounds like a great night for what I don't know.
12:41What is it?
12:42Joe?
12:43I don't know.

13:43Just to put a bow on the pasta stuff, yeah, I just want to say flatly and plainly like
13:51he cost the team the game he did and like not single handedly because like that's not
13:58a game that you should be in that position in any way.
14:00Like I think we all kind of penciled this as a game that they should win.
14:04But like you said, you put your team, Jesus, sorry, I live on a racetrack.
14:10You put your team four, you put your team four on three in overtime and the game's over.
14:16And like you've needed the exact opposite from him and the other guys on the top six
14:20to like step up and carry the weight.
14:22And instead it's like everyone but them who's contributing offensively.
14:30Marci who also slow start brought a side out of Monty that I don't think I've ever seen
14:38like yelling at a player on the bench and that player wearing a C on his chest and kind
14:42of shoving him a little bit, kind of not like knocking him over, but like physical contact.
14:49It was I don't want to say shocking, but it was like, oh, damn, that's a playoff atmosphere
14:56kind of thing.
14:57And for that to be happening in game six is like, oh, geez, our thing are we in this spot
15:02where like coach shoving the captain and like saying like, hey, wake up because that's what
15:07he was doing.
15:08More or less being like, hey, you're playing dumb.
15:10I had pure conjecture here.
15:14It would appear to be happening is it looks like money is walking away from him and then
15:17like quickly about faces and then starts yelling, which to me implies that March and said something
15:24to Monty that completely set him off.
15:27And he was like, you want to talk shit to me after that, after that move, which if you
15:32did not see the play that led to Montgomery yelling at March and was the goal that was
15:39eventually wiped off the board for being outside.
15:42It came from Brad.
15:44He was certainly in the offensive zone and was basically in double coverage and just
15:48try to make a fancy move through both of them and lost it, got knocked down, wasn't in too
15:52big of a rush to get up.
15:54And when he did, he got knocked down again.
15:56So I think the him not getting up thing is like it's not the biggest infraction there,
16:03but it's like a pile of poopy icing on a poop cake of that play like he does really, really
16:12take his time.
16:13I mean, he does get knocked down again, like you said, but he takes his sweet time getting
16:17up to get back in on D on a rush that he single handedly just created.
16:24Yeah, it kind of just speaks to, I think, the team to for this game.
16:28It just felt like a lazy game.
16:30Like there are exceptions, no doubt.
16:34Fourth line, I'm looking at you and swimming, but for the most part, there was just a lot
16:38of moments.
16:39I'm like, it doesn't really feel like they're fully in this game right now.
16:44And like after the first period, I was like, oh, like this, like this super winnable game,
16:49like they'll be, they'll get back into this.
16:52Like, I'm not, I'm not worried about it.
16:54Middle of the second, maybe early third.
16:56I was like, this team, that's not.
16:58This is, you didn't feel the one goal is enough.
17:02I was like, I don't know.
17:06I don't really see a second one in our near future here.
17:11And dude, I'll tell you the prevailing reason why.
17:15And it's just like a separate thought that I guess I'll just like bring in now.
17:19I'm so supremely jealous watching Utah in transition, like breaking out of their own
17:26zone and then breaking in smoothly, like not getting clogged up in the neutral zone, just
17:32like chipping it in deep and hoping you get possession, but like beating the defense with
17:38speed into the zone.
17:39That must be sick.
17:41They're a fast team to speak to that they are noticeably faster team.
17:48Yeah, no, I feel that way playing a lot of teams, to be honest, especially when it comes
17:52to the power play, just like seeing crisp movement.
17:55Basically, when you see a team have anything that the Bruins do not currently have, you're
17:59like, you know, grass is greener.
18:01You're like, oh, wouldn't, wouldn't that be nice?
18:03Yeah.
18:04But I also think there's like an it, and that's what I thought you were going to say.
18:07Like when a team just has it and they're clicking, if you take away all of the stats and the
18:14analytics and whatever, and you just go with, you know, you got in the eye test here, the
18:19Bruins just don't have it right now.
18:21They just don't have it.
18:22I've never like very rarely can you watch like a shift and be like, wow, they got it.
18:26They're clicking.
18:27Like even those third, fourth lines that have been producing, you know, it's, it's, it's
18:34different when like those bottom six guys get the job done versus skill guys.
18:39Like it just looks different to the eye of getting the job done versus like dominating
18:44a team in their zone.
18:46Yeah.
18:47I also have, I think like a great shift from a first line looks very different than a great
18:52shift from the fourth line.
18:53Those are like two very different types of great, uh, yeah, it's in the big talk around
18:59the Bruins fan right now is obviously centered around the fourth line and their contributions.
19:04I refer to it as a bubble last episode.
19:06It still is a bubble.
19:07I mean, Kepke team leading six point.
19:10What is he doing?
19:11I don't know.
19:12It's like this guy.
19:15I mean, this is like one of those things that like, this is going to happen.
19:17And then no one on the fourth one is going to have a point until January, but I'm not
19:22asking for that.
19:23Please keep doing what you're doing.
19:25But it's three and three to like, I think that, I don't know.
19:29It's a small sample size, but it's cool just to be even out like that.
19:32It is.
19:33And it's one of those things where it's at the same time as cool as it is.
19:35It's you can also use it as concern for the top six, if not top nine being like, you're
19:40getting a point per game from your fourth line.
19:43And you guys just to quote Scott, not quote, but Scott McLaughlin tweeted something out
19:50today.
19:51And this is about like five on five.
19:54This isn't about any particular line, but I think this kind of speaks to the team in
19:58general.
20:00The Bruins right now in five on five, five on five play per 60 minutes are 31st in shot
20:07attempts.
20:08Cool.
20:0932nd in shots on goal, 30th in scoring chances and 30th in high danger chances.
20:16That's tough.
20:18That sucks.
20:19Especially when you can tell that the power play sucks like that's five on five.
20:24That's where you're playing nearly the full game.
20:27It's either you're five on five or you're on the power play, which kind of sucks right
20:30now or you're shorthanded.
20:31So to be like nearly dead last in like those incredibly important metrics.
20:37That's so concerning.
20:39And everybody right now wants to prescribe the issue and say like, Oh, if you call a
20:43play cell or if you swap these two guys, it's, I don't think it's like a thing.
20:50Like it's so prevalent across the team that I don't know that there's like a fix to this.
20:56And also like talking about it, like teams having it looking that way that can change
21:01game to game.
21:02Like they could very well show up tomorrow against Nashville and just wipe the floor
21:07with them, which is what makes hockey so exciting is that you never know, but also makes it
21:12annoying when you will check into the game and they're 10 minutes in, you can already
21:16tell it's not one of those games.
21:18Like you're like, Oh, this is going to be, we're going to be sludging through this one.
21:22But yeah, it's just, it's, it's a tough state for the team right now for a couple other,
21:28a couple other rankings just to what you were saying, 21st in a power play percentage,
21:35a 17th in goals allowed per game, a 10th in goals per game, which stunning.
21:46Fourth line.
21:47Yeah.
21:48Yeah.
21:49And yeah, yeah.
21:50I mean, every other set is just kind of going to be the same thing, but they're, they're
21:55middle of the back to bottom kind of everywhere.
21:58So, um, the thing is losing to the Panthers is like, you know, the reigning cup champs
22:04beginning of the year, they're very good and they have your number and whatever losing
22:09to Utah.
22:10It doesn't matter.
22:11That's on the road.
22:12Doesn't matter.
22:13It's the second game of your road trip.
22:14Doesn't matter.
22:15Barely a team.
22:16They're barely a team.
22:18You should have beaten them.
22:19They don't even have a name.
22:21They don't even have a name.
22:22They don't have a name.
22:23They don't have a name.
22:24Don't have no one.
22:25And we're all hockey clubs.
22:27You got beat by a team of hockey clubs.
22:32They shouldn't change their name to the Utah hockey clubs.
22:35I can't, they could have just been Utah.
22:40Yeah.
22:41Well, I mean, whether you got to be something you can't, the name of your team can't be
22:46Utah.
22:47I, the Utah, Utahans.
22:48I already made that joke this show.
22:53Oh, I don't listen to you, Joe.
22:56You know, you ever think about how all the Canadian teams are just named Canadians.
23:01Like you got the Montreal Canadiens, which that's the Canadians, the Maple Leafs, which
23:06is just like the on the flag.
23:09It's just like that.
23:10You're going to save that one for last because it's the least applicable.
23:12No, I know I'm going east to west.
23:17Ottawa senators, senators are just citizens of Canada so that they are also just Canadians.
23:24Oilers, that is people who work in Canada.
23:26You're just again, the Canadians, Canucks is like a borderline slur for a Canadian.
23:32I thought it was growing up.
23:34I think it kind of is.
23:36And then the flames, I don't know, it killed a bunch of Canadians.
23:40So I don't know.
23:41The flames, I guess, are the outlier and the Jets, whatever.
23:43Who gives a they have a fire up in Calgary because I know they were the Atlanta flames.
23:48That's exactly.
23:49Yeah.
23:50So not even.
23:51Yeah.
23:52They're appropriating old people in Georgia are Civil War era war crimes.
23:58Yeah.
23:59Yeah.
24:00It's weird when that happens, i.e. the New Orleans Jazz moving to Utah and becoming the
24:07Utah Jazz.
24:08It's like, that's not you guys are not.
24:10That's not you.
24:13The Los Angeles Lakers, another very big, heavy basketball show.
24:17Do you guys like basketball?
24:18Because the NBA season is here.
24:21If you want to go to a game, the app that I use is Game Time.
24:27There's nothing like seeing a game live.
24:29I mean, watching it on TV is great.
24:30We have all the technology.
24:31We have our phones.
24:32We have access to everything.
24:33But being there in person, it's definitely the way to go.
24:37Game Time has a new feature called Game Time Picks that makes getting tickets to see your
24:41favorite teams play live even easier.
24:44Game Time filters out the fluff to show you only incredible deals on great seats.

25:04What time is it?
25:05It's Game Time.
25:06Hey, Rob.
25:07Hey.
25:08Here's a grand headline-ish question for you.
25:12Hit me.
25:14Were expectations for the Bruins defense too high?
25:19I'm feeling the same way.
25:23How many games can you get into a season where you still fall back on, hey, it's early?
25:33Hey, it's a little too soon to tell.
25:37I think, like, 11.
25:3911 games?
25:40Yeah, like a quarter of the way through, or an eighth of the way through the season.
25:45Okay.
25:46Like the first quarter, like 20 games in, you're like, hey, it's early.
25:50It's not.
25:51You know?
25:52It's only game 78.
25:53All right.
25:54We got time.
25:55We got time.
25:56We got time to figure it out.
25:57Yeah.
25:58I think, I mean, there's obviously new faces and all that and whatever, but it seems less
26:07like a chemistry issue and more like, okay, the identity that we all had in our heads
26:12of the big, bad Bruins might just not be the case because on an individual level, guys,
26:20it's not how they're playing.
26:22And it drives me insane anyway, Rob, you know, this, like I was raised by like an old fashioned
26:30hockey dad, you know, like I, I think I've told you this story before, but like, I so
26:36vividly remember there was this one game.
26:38My dad still, like, we still joke about it where like, um, scoring chance in front of
26:44our net.
26:45Right.
26:46Um, I was a center and kind of, you know, played it a little soft, right.
26:51Great.
26:52A big scoring chance.
26:53Right.
26:54And, uh, my dad smacks the glass so loud, fucking everybody, everybody here, like stops
27:00the arena.
27:01You know what I mean?
27:02Like we thought this man had a gun, like he smacked so hard, sound like a gunshot.
27:05And my dad yells, why is he still standing and points to the other child next to me on
27:11the ice.
27:12And uh, I was like, I don't, I don't, I don't, I don't know.
27:15So like I was raised with this mentality of like, put them on their fucking ass.
27:19That's what you do.
27:20Right.
27:21So that was, you know, shouted into my head with an audience of a couple hundred people.
27:25So I'm like, that's what you do.
27:26That's what you do.
27:27That's what you do.
27:28So watching professional hockey where it doesn't happen.
27:29I get that same thing.
27:30I'm a wise.
27:31He's still standard.
27:32You're supposed to be scared of your dad in this moment, kill him, kill him.
27:39And I already feel that way all the time.
27:42But after going to the off season, to be honest, it, it, I, it does hockey's not an outlet
27:48for anger.
27:49It's a beautiful game.
27:52And after going through an off season where you're told like the Bruins defense is huge.
27:58Say hello to the big bad Bruins 2.0.
28:01The largest defensive core in history.
28:04They're practically Titans.
28:06The average Bruin is seven foot eight hung like a horse.
28:10I can't wait.
28:12And then to like watch a goal where like defensemen are standing around whole, I, it might look
28:19like I got a haircut.
28:20Rob, I actually ripped all of this out watching, watching the defense just stand around in
28:26front of the net.
28:27I hate it so much.
28:28I hate it so much.
28:29You hated it the last season.
28:31I think that was your biggest gripe with the team last season is how soft they were in
28:35front of their own net.
28:37Yeah.
28:38So it didn't really improve, which is weird.
28:40I'm still waiting on my, like, there's a door of moment.
28:45Like that's, that's the guy like, again, he's not been a problem, but I get to your original
28:52question of like, did this get overhyped a little bit?
28:55It's like, all right, are we just learning what the expectation should have been?
29:01Is that what's happening?
29:02That we're like, oh, is this the quality of play?
29:04I still like they're so far away from their highest gear right now.
29:09Like I also don't want to sound like I think this is just their average level of play this
29:13season.
29:14I think they're not playing.
29:15Well, I think they're playing well below what they could be in should be at this point.
29:21I don't know what it's going to take.
29:24There's like, I don't really brass is concerning to me right now.
29:28Like he kind of skated around.
29:30He had two hits.
29:31Other than that, just goose eggs on the score sheet.
29:35I'm not noticing people.
29:37That's it.
29:38Like, I'm barely there's like, usually the games are like, what a game from coil and
29:41geeky.
29:42You know what?
29:43Freddie had a good game too.
29:44It's like, uh, kept getting a goal and then they lost.
29:51I would be inclined to believe this is not what the expectations should have been or
29:57anything like that, strictly because of how Monty is reacting to what's going on.
30:03He ain't too pleased.
30:05He's like, he's every day pissed.
30:09I think we undersold earlier when we talked about how about him yelling at Martian at
30:13just how mad he was like, if you have not seen it, go watch it.
30:19He is live it live it in his third season here.
30:24Never seen him quite like that, at least not in my, in my memory, but I mean, he's
30:29like his pressers to have been short.
30:34He's not really, he's not like, oh, you know, we had a good game, but it could be a little
30:38better here.
30:39It's dude's mad.
30:41I mean, yeah, I'm watching back the clip right now of him yelling at Marshy.
30:47He's screaming at him.
30:49Like see what I mean too, about how he like whips his head around.
30:52He's like, what the fuck did you just say to me?
30:54Yeah.
30:55He didn't just remember that he's mad.
30:57No, something, something set him off.
31:01I need a, we need a lip reader there too, because nearly everything he says is in clear
31:04view.
31:05Like you can see his mouth moving.
31:06So I would love to even know a few of those words.
31:09Yeah.
31:10The first one just looks like fuck, but I'm going through the replies because there's
31:15usually a John boy want to be in here somewhere.
31:19No, everyone just says, wow.
31:23Cool.
31:24Also talk about money.
31:25Cool.
31:26Real people.
31:27Cool website.
31:28Elon talking about money.
31:32A lot of people have started the conversation.
31:34I mean, this being a contract here for Montgomery, does the team re-sign him?
31:40Yeah.
31:41I mean, probably.
31:43Yeah.
31:44It's, it's weird to be in his position.
31:47Like teams very rarely leave a coach on a lame duck contract.
31:51It's just, it's weird.
31:53I don't like the pressure of like coaching for your job and he doesn't seem worried about
32:00it or whatever.
32:01But like, and like, dude, it's like 74% of points available points, you know, like two
32:06plus seasons.
32:08Yeah.
32:09I also think part of it is that like the front office just had a long negotiation elsewhere.
32:15So I think, you know, the fact that something hasn't got worked out now isn't crazy.
32:19Like I could see a mid-season extension and like, I don't think it would, it would shock
32:22me.
32:23I think it would be more shocked if he went somewhere else.
32:24I just don't like him being on a lame duck contract, but there could very well be a handshake
32:30deal.
32:31Like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
32:32We'll get something worked out this year.
32:33Don't worry.
32:34So I don't know.
32:35Not, I don't know.
32:39Kevin Miller was at the game.
32:41Sure.
32:42Whatever.
32:43Yeah.
32:44It's Utah.
32:45Yeah.
32:46That's probably where he ended up.
32:47Near the trees.
32:48Yeah.
32:49Near the deer.
32:50Yeah.
32:51He's Kevin Miller.
32:52So I think the strongest player I've ever seen play.
32:56I don't think there's anybody I would be less inclined to fight.
33:01And obviously the list is everybody who has ever played hockey, but he is still at the
33:06top of that list for me.
33:08Ever since he broke Joe Vitale's face and basically ended his career, I've, I've looked
33:13at him with just like a, a fearful revenants, like a, whatever you say.
33:20Yes.
33:21Yes.
33:22Whatever way, whatever you need.
33:23Like remember that clip of him where he was like, I'm not done yet.
33:26And it was just him like working out at home and it was like, oh my God, Kevin Miller can
33:30walk.
33:31Remember talking about, it was like just out of nowhere.
33:35He was just like, don't forget about me.
33:38And he was doing like some crazy, like one leg squats, jump squat things.
33:44And it was like, oh my Lord, dude, what, where have you been?
33:48I don't know.
33:49There's a couple of years ago.
33:50It's a weird thing, but that's what jumps to my brain with Kevin Miller that.
33:53And it's so weird.
33:54Mill and Marsh Co.
33:55Marsh and Milco, whatever.
33:56I forget about it.
33:57They kind of stopped promoting it so much.
33:59It was everywhere for a while.
34:03It's just weird that like, that's the business part, whatever.
34:05I don't know.
34:07They are to the Bruins sign Tyler Johnson soon, probably, maybe, who knows?
34:13They need something.
34:14Do you care?
34:15A little bit.
34:16Do you honestly care?
34:17Yeah.
34:18I mean, I liked him in the preseason.
34:19I liked how he played.
34:20And like, at this point, like we talked about, like, is there a fix, which there probably
34:25isn't.
34:26Still, you know, I don't know if the fix is shuffling the bottom six, because that way
34:32the fourth.
34:33I mean, the fourth line is the fourth line.
34:35If they fuck with the fourth line at all, they're stupid.
34:39Do we have a name for them now?
34:41Not yet.
34:42But everybody's like, well, they're not the fourth line.
34:44I'm like, I mean, they are, though, like, just because they're really good.
34:48Like they are.
34:49You know what I mean?
34:50Like it's.
34:51Yeah.
34:52Also, it just openly implies that you think lesser of fourth lines, which like you kind
34:56of do because it's the fourth line.
34:58But there's nothing organic yet.
35:01I'll put it that way.
35:02There's nothing.
35:03Oh, of course.
35:04There's nothing.
35:05There's nothing there.
35:06There's nothing there.
35:07I don't know.
35:08I got to look at them here.
35:14The boys.
35:15I don't know.
35:16Oh, the boys.
35:17The boys.
35:18No, but yeah, for Taylor Johnson, like I said, I did like how he looked in the preseason
35:23water bug, but it's not like, oh, that's what they're missing is more energy.
35:29It's like they're missing a lot of things right now, like so much so that you can't
35:33really diagnose the team's problem because nobody's really playing to the best of their
35:37ability.
35:38So until they do, you're not going to know what your team's like actual weaknesses are.
35:44I will say, just in reference to the fourth line.
35:51There has been talk about moving Kepke up.
35:53No, I know, like it works because it's no, yeah, like it's it's the matchups.
36:00It's the chemistry.
36:02It's a lot of things.
36:04It's not just like, oh, he's playing really well.
36:06So if we put him with other guys, they'll play really well, too.
36:08I am.
36:09So like, I don't know.
36:10That's the whole thing with Tyler Johnson's like, I don't know, he wouldn't be for I would
36:14put him on the third line.
36:15It's just weird.
36:16I don't know.
36:17Shuffling and shuffling anybody around.
36:19Just I swear to God, if I see Riley Tufte play in the next week, I'm going to be livid.
36:24That is just simply not the solution.
36:28Patra looked better this game also to talk about him because we have to not fully back,
36:37but he's on the he had there was one play where he was taking out of the defensive end
36:44and one of the Utah hockey player hockey club, God damn it, took the puck away from him.
36:50There was a clubber.
36:51There was a there was a clubber.
36:53There's a second clubber.
36:56So he took the puck away from Padra and Padra immediately went after him in the neutral
37:00zone and stole it back and got it rushed into the offensive end around one of the Utah players
37:06and got a shot on goal.
37:07And I was like, hey, there he is.
37:09That's Maddie.
37:12So it's still I don't again, like it's it's it's so prevalent throughout the team.
37:17It's hard for me to be like, this is his problem because it's there's so many problems.
37:22But I I'm still waiting on him to like start firing on all cylinders again.
37:27And I'm starting to worry that he may be in his it's like a in his head kind of thing.
37:34I think with the way that the team looks, I have a hard time putting it on the teenager.
37:42You know, it's the 20 year old fault.
37:45Yeah.
37:46Yeah.
37:47So I don't know.
37:48I'm not I'm not worried about him at all.
37:49But I mean, she, I guess, yeah, I think that's probably where my primary concern is.
37:55And then I don't want to put it on this guy, too, but I'm kind of going to like we haven't
38:04seen a pasta takeover shift, like not like there.
38:09Those do happen.
38:10And it's weird and kind of gross to sit here and be like, well, why doesn't the star player
38:14just go nuts like I don't know.
38:17You see somebody like Nathan McKinnon just like take over a shift and just like will
38:21his team on to the scoreboard.
38:24And you're like, that is possible.
38:28It is kind of what I want for my star guy.
38:30Not every night, but like I mean, he's making the money he's making.
38:35He's making enough money where I feel more comfortable being like, you need to do more.
38:39Yeah.
38:40Like even when he's like scoring nearly a goal per game, I'm like, I know you got to
38:45do more.
38:46It sucks because like I mean, that's just posture knock in a nutshell.
38:49It is.
38:50It is.
38:51Yeah.
38:52Yeah.
38:53The score sheet is going to tell you like, oh man, yeah, he did do stuff tonight.
38:55But like, you just also want him to do something more and be like, just dominate for a minute.
39:00He had two shots on goal this game.
39:02Horrible.
39:03And he missed the net once.
39:05So that is three attempts.
39:06Oh, sorry.
39:07Not necessarily because it could have been blocked.
39:10Kepke.
39:11Here's my one and only.
39:12Oh, that's interesting.
39:13The only other thing I'm going to say about this game is Kepke led the team in shots with
39:17five.
39:18Oh, that's interesting.
39:19He led the game because no one on Utah had five either, which is like, and it's again,
39:25back to the point of trying to make about like, you can praise the fourth line, but
39:28then in doing so, it kind of casts a negative light on everybody else called Kepke should
39:33not be leading the team in shots on goal.
39:35He really should not.
39:38So he and also I want to point out that Braz played only like 11 and change that game,
39:44which is definitely less than he usually plays.
39:48So it's like you look at the time on ice, it's like the fourth line is getting more
39:51time than the third.
39:53There was even the broadcaster saying this might have been the previous game.
39:57It was like a tied game or like a one goal game that would have been tied in the closing
40:03minutes and Kepke is out there with like a minute to go.
40:07And it's like, that's all you really need to know about what Manny thinks about Kepke
40:10is that he's like, yeah, send out the fourth liner.
40:13That's that's what we want right now.
40:15Yeah.
40:16I have some other bench clearing stuff.
40:21Clear that bench.
40:22Matt Myers.
40:23Matty Myers.
40:24Matty Myers.
40:25In case you don't know him.

40:47I don't do Red Sox podcasting.
40:49Exactly.
40:50Well, that's why that's why favorite Red Sox podcaster.
40:53That's why I gave you a little nod there.
40:56Yeah.
40:57I went to high school with Matt Myers, kind of knew each other, but like I knew his brother
41:02more than I played with his brother.
41:04But yeah, Matty was inducted into the New Hampshire Hockey Hall of Fame, which is quite
41:09the honor and is also how I found out that there's a New Hampshire Hockey Hall of Fame.
41:17That's great for him, deserves it.
41:20He's good at his job.
41:21He's very good at his job.
41:22We were talking before we started recording that it's gotten to the point when I hear
41:27that the Bruins are challenging a goal.
41:30I feel like extremely confident it's coming back.
41:34The only time it doesn't, if it's like, I don't feel that way, is if it's specifically
41:37about goaltender interference, because that is just a fucking coin toss.
41:41Sure.
41:42But nobody knows what that is.
41:44I don't know if you saw the battle for Alberta.
41:45No.
41:46Yeah.
41:47No, you see it around the league.
41:49It's not just the Bruins people.
41:51You see it around the league.
41:52There's been a lot of it already.
41:53Just a lot of like somehow both that didn't get called back and also that got called back.
41:59So they don't know what's what.
42:03It's almost like they're constantly making the wrong decision.
42:06I've never seen a goalie interference.
42:07Never.
42:08I guess you wouldn't also see it.
42:09They wouldn't put it around and be like, here's a good call.
42:11It was made.
42:12But you see a lot of bad ones in both directions, I guess is a better way to put it.
42:16But you know, Matt's great at what he does.
42:18He was in like a coaching role in high school as a senior.
42:22He was already coaching, and so he just knows the game really well.
42:25So I remember pretty shortly after high school, he was working with the Nashville Predators
42:31and it's like, oh, that's cool.
42:33And then when he came here, it was like, oh, sweet, like, that's awesome.
42:36And now that he's like really solidified his role here, deserves it.
42:41It's earned and it's cool that he got the recognition to the New Hampshire Hockey Hall
42:46of Fame.
42:47So congratulations.
42:48A thing that we all knew existed.
42:49Yes.
42:50Yes.
42:51It's like when I tell people I have family members in the New England Billiards Hall
42:55of Fame, they're like, oh, I'm like, yeah, but hey, they're in it.
43:02Yeah, I was what's the word like qualifying a guy recently to somebody.
43:09I was like, dude, no, he's like a good musician.
43:11He's in the New England Music Hall of Fame.
43:14And they were like, don't act like that's Noah Khan.
43:18Don't act like that's something I should know.
43:20Like, oh, he's in the New England musical.
43:24The Nemo Nemo.
43:28I'm trying to name the name Nemo Nemo Finding Nemo.
43:33Goddamn it.
43:34All right.
43:35All right.
43:36All right.
43:37Let's go back to naming basketball teams.
43:41When are we going to be here next, dude?
43:43Also, we don't even we don't even see jazz bear this game.
43:46Also, what's the point of having a horrifying mascot if I don't have the opportunity to
43:51cower from it?
43:55Probably for the best.
43:57That should be scarier in general.
43:59I think we're in the right trend with gritty in the fucking jazz bear.
44:03But I shouldn't I shouldn't want to leave my kids with you.
44:09No.
44:10Not that you should leave your children with any mascot.
44:13You shouldn't leave your children with anyone.
44:15Don't don't don't believe the kids.
44:17Don't do it.
44:18Don't.

44:32We got the Nashville game and then back home against Dallas.
44:36Yeah.
44:37You want to record postgame on Thursday?
44:38Yeah.

45:10I know.
45:11I was that like I'm like, oh, it's the same Tyler Sagan's first.
45:15It's the same guy.
45:16Oh, how about that?
45:17He's still around.
45:18Oh, my God.

45:24That's so funny.
45:25That's yeah.
45:26I'm proud of him.
45:27How old is he?
45:28Actually?
45:29I don't know.
45:30I don't want to see the answer to that.
45:31I want to say like 34.

45:39He's 19 years old.
45:40I traded like 11 years ago.
45:41Also, like, it's not.
45:42Oh, did you see that former left the Canucks?
45:46Yeah.
45:47Some personal issue.
45:48Yeah.
45:49I wish him the best.
45:50Yeah.
45:51I don't think anything came out, which isn't surprising, but, you know, we love.

46:02We really did win that trade.
46:03Didn't we?
46:04It must be so annoying for Center's fans to look at, like, Catholic's performance.
46:08Be like, dude, are you kidding me?
46:11Are you serious?
46:12The whole time watching that, the sense are like, we're going to give Omar the same deal
46:18as wait a minute.

46:22And then Omar is like, thanks for the check.

46:32You're like, I don't know what happened.
46:33I slept on it.
46:34Funny.
