00:00British citizen, Andrew Nguyen has reacted to the allegation made against him by the
00:05Nigerian police force that he plotted during the NBAN governance protest to overthrow President
00:10Bola Ametilebu, saying, protest is not a treasonable act hence the government should set free all
00:16the ten protesters whom some of them were arraigned before federal high court sitting
00:21in Abuja for terrorism and treasonable felony on Monday.
00:26According to the letter as reported by Sahara reporters, the Briton who was accused of inciting
00:31insurrection against President Bola Ametilebu's government urged the Nigerian government not
00:36to treat protests as treason.
00:39Andrew's bookshop, located at the Abuja headquarters of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, was
00:46previously raided and sealed.
00:48Sahara reporters added that, part of the bogus charges against him involved enabling some
00:54NBAN governance protesters with the intent to destabilize Nigeria.
00:59In a statement on the letterhead of his bookshop, Povey wrote, protest is not treason, release
01:06all the detainees.
01:08The mass protests over NBAN governance and NCOF frightened the government, but rather
01:13than addressing the people's demands, the government turned to repression.
01:18Povey further stated, perhaps 40 people were murdered by the police and other security
01:24forces, thousands were arrested and many still remain in captivity.
01:29In Abuja, the authorities have attacked the so-called leaders and organizers of the protests.
01:35Ten people faced ridiculous charges including treason, mutiny and levying war against the
01:41state.
01:42The NLC promised a general strike to protect its president, Joe Ajairu, from arrest and
01:49detention in relation to similar charges.
01:52Despite the flimsy nature of the evidence against the detainees, the first long years
01:57in prison unless the trade union movement is prepared to protect them.
02:02On the 7th of August, the NLC said it, condemns in the strongest terms the human rights violations
02:09perpetrated by security forces against peaceful protesters.
02:14The first person to be arrested in this case was Eliojo Opanua.
02:19He is a former colleague of Joe Ajairu, working for NUEE, the electrician's union, as an organizer
02:27in Abuja.
02:28He is also the vice-chair of the NLC in Kogi State.
02:33He has now been detained for over four weeks with no tangible evidence.
02:38His family was told that he had received a WhatsApp message from one of the other alleged
02:43leaders.
02:44This was after Eliojo had actually been detained.
02:48The ten detainees have been accused of conspiracy to commit a range of serious crimes.
02:54However, the burning know each other.
02:57Five of them may have been members of a WhatsApp group set up to organize the protests in Abuja.
03:04But the other five are unknown to these comrades.
03:07There may be a few of the flag-waving protesters from Kano who were added to extend the range
03:12of the organizers to cover the main protests from Sokoto to Maiduguri.
03:17There appears to be a conflict between the government and the police investigating this
03:22case.
03:23The head of the intelligence response team, Ayati, told the detainees' lawyers that he
03:28would have released them, but that he had orders from above not to set them free.
03:34So the police have developed what appears to be a ridiculous case involving the owner
03:39of Ivor Valley Books.
03:41They are claiming that he goes under the name of Andrew Povich, a Russian-sounding name,
03:47and that he has now left Nigeria for Russia.
03:50Neither of these claims are true.
03:52Yomi, who works for Ivor Valley Books, has, like the other detainees, been treated in
03:59a terribly inhumane manner.
04:01He was arrested in front of his wife and three-year-old daughter.
04:06All their phones were confiscated by the police.
04:09This was despite appeals from his wife that they needed a phone to get money for food.
04:15He was then imprisoned illegally, and held in chains, beaten, and tortured for three
04:21days.
04:22His only involvement was to design flyers for the protests on the instructions of his
04:27boss.
04:29The NLC has shown that it has the power to protect its president.
04:34It now needs to extend this action to protect its other officers, its members, and the general
04:40public.
04:41We had reported that the Nigerian government, through the Office of the Inspector General
04:46of Police, INGP, has alleged that one British national, Andrew Nguyen, made attempt to overthrow
04:52President Bola Emet-Silebu following the investigation of some senior staff of the Nigerian Labour
04:57Congress, NLC.
05:00Nigeria Police Force on Monday declared the British national identified as Andrew Nguyen
05:05aka Andrew Povich or Drew Povey, wanted for allegedly plotting to overthrow the President
05:11Bola Silebu-led government.
05:13The force's public relations officer, ACP Mwiwa Adejebi, in a statement said, following
05:20extensive intelligence gathering and collaboration with other security agencies, nine suspects
05:26have been apprehended, who received substantial financial backing from foreign sources to
05:31destabilize the country.
05:33Preliminary findings suggest they orchestrated and funded violent protests, disseminated
05:38false information, and engaged in other unlawful activities to create anarchy and justify their
05:45illegal plot to overthrow the democratically elected government.
05:50Investigations have identified a foreign mercenary, Andrew Nguyen, also known as Andrew Povich
05:55or Drew Povey, a British national, who built a network of sleeper cells to topple the government
06:01and plunge the nation into chaos.
06:04He rented a space at Labour House Abuja for an Ivor Valley bookshop and established Stars
06:12of Nations schools as a cover for his subversive activities.
06:17Documentary evidence and confessions revealed that Andrew Nguyen issued directives, monitored
06:22progress, and provided finance and operational guidance to achieve unconstitutional regime
06:28change in Nigeria.
06:30He mobilized and deployed several millions of Naira to his Nigerian collaborators, urging
06:35them to mobilize the public to violently storm police facilities and military barracks, anticipating
06:42a bloodbath that would instigate international condemnation of the Nigerian government.
06:47The police also said the investigation of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, has revealed
06:53the level of involvement of the foreigner as the NLC did not even know the real identity
06:59of the person also alleged to be as a foreign mercenary occupying their building.
07:05Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyo Adejobi, while briefing journalists in Abuja
07:12on Monday, said Andrew built a network of sleeper cells to topple the government and
07:17plunge the nation into chaos.
07:20Similarly, the police declared Lucky Ihis Obion, who is alleged to be a local coordinator
07:26for Andrew, wanted, adding that global hunting for them has commenced in connection with
07:32the investigation.
07:34According to him, documentary evidence and confessions revealed that Andrew Nguyen issued
07:39directives, monitored progress, and provided finance and operational guidance to achieve
07:45unconstitutional regime change in Nigeria.
07:48Since the commencement of investigations, Andrew Nguyen has fled the country.
07:54He and one of his local coordinators, one Lucky Ihis Obion, have accordingly been declared
08:00wanted and global hunting for them has commenced in connection with this investigation.
