Liz Truss: "I’d have done better than Sunak at election"
#uk #rishisunak #liztruss
Liz Truss has said she would have led the party to a better election performance than Rishi Sunak.

The former prime minister also called the ousting of Boris Johnson a “stupid move” by colleagues.

In her only appearance at the Tory conference, Truss told a fringe event she believed she was the “second best” option after Johnson and would have been vindicated had her mini-budget been allowed to succeed.

She added that Reform was polling at only 3 per cent when she was in Downing Street.

00:00Why did people in Britain not vote Conservative?
00:04Because they felt worse off after 14 years of Conservative government.
00:10They were also frustrated by the very high levels of immigration our country had.
00:16Those are the fundamentals, and yet very few people in the Conservative Party
00:21seem willing to debate the fundamentals that are wrong.
00:25I lost my seat largely due to reform.
00:28Reform took a lot of my vote in South West Norfolk.
00:33I was, frankly, in quite a difficult position because I was running under
00:38a very orthodox Conservative Party whilst being an unorthodox Conservative myself,
00:43so it was quite a mixed message.
00:45That's what happened to us in many similar seats,
00:49was that because reform did so well,
00:52Conservatives lost and Labour got in.
00:55I don't believe the people of South West Norfolk
00:58actually consciously want the Labour MP.
01:01People in South West Norfolk want things to change.
01:04One of our readers asked, if you had battled on in your premiership and held on,
01:10do you think that a Tory party led by you would have done better
01:14than a Tory party led by Rishi Sunak at the last election?
01:17Yes, I do.
01:19Why do you think so?
01:21Because when I was in number 10, reform was polling at 3%.
01:28By the time we got to the election, they got 18%
01:34because we promised change that we didn't deliver.
01:38Without the support of the Parliamentary Party,
01:41it was very, very difficult for me to get my changes through.
01:45If you have people in the Parliamentary Party saying,
01:49it's Liz Truss' fault this has happened, not the Bank of England's fault,
01:53which is what people did and are still doing,
01:57as we've just been discussing,
01:59it is very difficult for me to deliver that change.
02:02But certainly, if the mini-budget had been allowed to succeed,
02:06we'd have lower corporation tax, bringing more companies into this country,
02:11not relocating to Ireland.
02:13We'd have duty-free shoppers coming to London
02:17rather than being diverted to Paris or Milan.
02:20We'd go on with fracking.
02:22One of the biggest reasons this country is stagnant
02:26is our high energy prices,
02:29which are now four times what they are in the United States.
02:32By now, fracking would be taking place in Britain.
02:36And I think that would have a serious impact on our competitiveness.
