Florida will investigate the apparent attempted assassination of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach golf course, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has said, saying he does not have confidence in the federal government to conduct a transparent probe.

00:00In my judgment, it's not in the best interest of our state or our nation that the same federal
00:05agencies that are seeking to prosecute Donald Trump leading this investigation, especially
00:11when the most serious straightforward offense constitutes a violation of state law, but
00:17not federal law.
00:19In addition to holding the suspect accountable, the public deserves to know the truth about
00:24how this assassination came to be.
00:27And I've directed all state agencies to work expeditiously to be able to uncover the truth
00:34in addition to holding this suspect accountable.
00:37So there was clearly a lot of security, but the one thing I noticed is that when you get
00:40into that fifth hole, jail's on the left, the green is in front, and then South Congress
00:47Ave. is right beyond that, where the tee box for the sixth hole, and the sixth hole's basically
00:51all on that fence line, and then the seventh tee box is on the fence line.
00:56And so just me as playing partner, as a governor, just thinking about it, I was like, that is
01:02the soft underbelly from a security perspective.
01:05You just, you can't not notice that when you're on that golf course.
01:10And so I think there'll be questions to ask.
01:13Clearly, the former president has said that he's very grateful for the Secret Service
01:18engaging this guy and preempting him from being able to take off a shot.
01:23And so we'll see how it was that this guy was able to burrow himself in the bushes for
01:29apparently 12 hours, and how that came to happen.
01:33And so I think people are used to kind of the federal agencies taking control of things
01:38and then no answers happening, and we don't want that to happen in this case.
01:43That's not appropriate to happen in this case, especially when the state of Florida has multiple
01:48grounds with which to pursue charges against this individual.
