00:00President Bola Ahmed Thinubu of Nigeria has said the outcome of the last Saturday Edo
00:05state governorship election is a testimony that people are in support of his economic
00:10ideals and commitment in improving lives in the country.
00:14President Bola Ahmed Thinubu stated this in a press statement signed and made available
00:19by the Special Advisor to the President on Information and Strategy, bio-anonymous after
00:24the President-owned political party, All Progressives Congress, APC candidate, Monde
00:30Opeholo was declared winner amid allegations of wrong use of men of the Nigeria Police
00:35Force for the falsification, inflation and manipulation of the election results at some
00:40coalition centres after the Edo electorates casted their votes on Saturday.
00:45President Thinubu said the way and manner Edo people conducted themselves during the
00:49election is a sign that democracy is stable in Nigeria and INEC is committed in conducting
00:55free and fair elections in the West Africa country.
00:59Bio-anonymous in the news statement said, President Bola Thinubu congratulates Senator
01:04Monde Opeholo, the All Progressives Congress, APC candidate in Saturday's Edo state governorship
01:12election, on his victory at the polls.
01:15Senator Opeholo was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission,
01:20INEC, on Sunday, having defeated other contenders for the position.
01:26President Thinubu commends APC national leaders, Edo state leaders, and party governors for
01:32working hard to achieve victory.
01:35He says the victory testifies to the people's support for the ruling party, its progressive
01:40ideals, its economic re-engineering programme, and its commitment to improving the lives
01:45of Nigerians.
01:47He urges Senator Opeholo not to gloat over his victory but to see it as a challenging
01:52call to service.
01:54He encourages him to demonstrate magnanimity by reaching out to his political rivals and
01:59uniting the people of Edo state to ensure its development.
02:04President Thinubu also praises other candidates who participated in the election for their
02:09contributions to advancing Nigeria's democracy, saying peaceful political contests, such as
02:15the one on Saturday, portray Nigeria as a stable democracy.
02:20The president urges all those aggrieved by the election outcome to seek redress through
02:25the legal channels.
02:27In addition, the president commends the people of Edo state for their orderly and peaceful
02:32conduct during the election, underscoring the maturing of Nigeria's democracy after
02:3725 years.
02:39I commend the INEC and our security agencies for working round the clock to conduct a successful,
02:45peaceful and largely hitch-free exercise.
02:48INEC has once again demonstrated that it is committed to organising a free and fair election
02:54in our country, President Thinubu says.
02:57We had reported that the last Saturday Edo state gubernatorial election appeared to be
03:02a very big interest for the incumbent governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki, and the former
03:08governors of Edo and River states who are currently the incumbent senator representing
03:12Edo North and FCT Minister Adams Oshomole and Nyesomweke, respectively.
03:18Nyesomweke has said he feels betrayed after he helped Governor Godwin Obaseki to secure
03:23power for his current second tenure in office through the People's Democratic Party, PDP
03:29when the then All Progressives Congress, APC National Chairman, Adams Oshomole disqualified
03:35him from contesting the governorship seat on the platform of his then-political party,
03:40APC, in 2020.
03:42Adams Oshomole had in several occasions also described Governor Obaseki as a betrayal,
03:48saying he regretted choosing him as successor in 2016.
03:53President Bola Amed Thinubu had in 2020 called on Edo people to vote Governor Obaseki out
03:59of office and he shouldn't be given second term to rule the people but many people in
04:03the state then.
04:05Pipped offense on President Bola Amed Thinubu's statements who was only then APC National
04:11Chairman.
04:12The 2023 presidential election that got President Bola Amed Thinubu into power as Nigeria president
04:19has been an issue of concern to many.
04:22Scores of people believed that the 2023 election was filled with irregularities, violence,
04:29disenfranchisement of eligible voters, manipulation of election results among other insinuations
04:35or allegations but the Nigeria Supreme Court of Justice ruled that the political parties
04:39and candidates who contested the 2023 presidential election outcome in court were not able to
04:44prove their case of widespread margins of irregularities, manipulation of election results,
04:50violence, disenfranchisement even though the apex court noted that there were isolated
04:55cases of the allegations which were not enough to rule otherwise against Bola Amed Thinubu
04:59who was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
05:04Governor Obaseki had refused to sign the traditional routine peace accord agreement on the ground
05:10that those who ought to be the promoters of peace are already causing violence ahead the
05:14gubernatorial election by thus intimidating, harassing and arresting members of his political
05:20party, PDP, to weaken the chances of PDP winning the areas where they arrested and
05:26detained party chieftains from, saying, the authorities at the federal government are
05:31doing so for APC to win the governorship by all means.
05:35The tension in the state meant the Benin monarch, Omolabanido Okuakolokolu Obayewe, the second,
05:44to order Bishusu's sacrificial ceremony to allow the gods or deities in Benin Kingdom
05:49to avoid any act of calamity before, during and after the governorship election.
