00:00Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has said that the presence of the Nigeria Chief of
00:05Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwamin Musa in the State on Wade has assuaged fears
00:11of insecurity previously envisaged for this Saturday Edo State Governorship election.
00:17Governor Obaseki stated this in a Facebook post after he the Chief of Defence Staff visited
00:22him at Government House in Benin City on Wade.
00:26According to Governor Obaseki, he believes the Chief of Defence Staff is better positioned
00:31than any other person to understand the national security implications of this Saturday Edo
00:37State Governorship election.
00:39Governor Obaseki said the conduct of security operatives in the State among others had assuaged
00:45fears of unwarranted intimidations and arrests of members of his party, the People's Democratic
00:51Party, PDP.
00:53I believe the Chief of Defence Staff, CDS General Christopher Gwamin Musa, is better
00:59positioned than anyone else to understand the national security implications of the
01:04Edo gubernatorial election.
01:07His presence and assurances of peace, security, non-partisanship, and the professional conduct
01:14of security personnel in the State have significantly assuaged the fears we previously expressed
01:19regarding the unwarranted intimidation and arrest of members of the People's Democratic
01:24Party, PDP, by officers of the police force.
01:28We are not asking for any favour but are stating that Edo citizens should be free to go to
01:33the polls to elect the candidates of their choice.
01:37We will accept the outcome of a properly conducted election.
01:41For eight years, the security forces in the State have been highly cooperative in helping
01:46us address security concerns.
01:49Collaboratively, we have established forward operating bases, FOPs, and designed a digitized
01:55security architecture that has made Edo one of the safest states in the country.
02:01All we have achieved in terms of security must not be compromised on the basis of the
02:06forthcoming election, Governor Godwin Obaseki stated.
02:10Governor Obaseki, who had refused to sign the peace accord earlier during the week,
02:15also said that, arising from a closed-door meeting of the carcass of our great party,
02:21the People's Democratic Party, PDP, in Edo State, we wish to express our appreciation
02:27to the Inspector General of Police and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral
02:31Commission, INEC, for their assurances of providing a level playing field for all players
02:36in Saturday's gubernatorial election in the State.
02:40As a party, we are ready for the election and confident that the people will make the
02:44right choice by voting for our candidates, who stand held and shoulders above the others.
02:50We are hopeful that with the courts resuming today, all our members who have been detained
02:56in Abuja will be released or granted bail to reunite with their families.
03:01On that ground, we will consider signing the peace accord.
