03:48Olukoyene charges Nigerian youths on positive use of technological skills.
03:54The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Oda Olukoyene
03:59has charged youths across the country to deploy their technological skills for the benefit
04:04of the nation and for their individual development rather than for negative and fraudulent purposes.
04:11He made the call in Abuja on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 while addressing the Nigerian youth
04:17stakeholders' conversation themed, Digital Economy Transition, Pathway to Global Competitiveness.
04:24The Director, Public Affairs Department, Commander of the EFCC, CA Wilson Owujaren, who represented
04:33Olukoyede, said there was so much opportunity for youths in the digital space to demonstrate
04:39their technological skills instead of using such skills for fraudulent activities.
04:44According to him, the Commission identified with the objectives of the program aimed at
04:50harnessing the tech skills of young Nigerians for the nation's economic development and
04:55personal growth of the citizenry.
04:57All of us are aware of the tremendous skills that our young citizens possess, especially
05:03in technology.
05:05We are all aware of the marvelous things Nigerians are doing, especially in the fintech ecosystem.
05:12I doubt there is any other country in Africa that has the type of resources that this nation
05:17has in terms of the deployment of technology by young persons in all areas of development.
05:24Technology is something you cannot run away from.
05:27It is the future of the whole world, and we must ensure that youths who are having these
05:32skills deploy them for the benefit of our nation, he said.
05:38He pointed out that the reputation of Nigeria is at stake owing to the negative use of technology,
05:43adding that as long as young Nigerians continue to defraud citizens of other countries of
05:48their hard-earned money, the nation's reputation will continue to suffer.
05:53He called all well-meaning Nigerians who are aware of the dangerous implication of
05:58cybercrime on the economy of the nation to rise up and join forces with the Commission
06:02to say that, together, Nigeria wins the war against cybercrime.
06:08According to Olukoyede, it's time Nigeria moved back to the foundation era of moral
06:13values.
06:14The foundation of our moral values is threatened by the emphasis we have placed on wealth.
06:20It is really saddening that parents across the country today do not frown at sudden wealth
06:25by their children.
06:27You found a situation where children, who are being fed and cared for by their own parents,
06:33suddenly become wealthy and nobody asks questions.
06:37Across our campuses, we have young people who are driving cars that their parents can
06:42only have in their dreams, yet nobody asks questions.
06:46There is no way we can solve this problem until we look inward and find a way to teach
06:51the core values.
06:53There is no Nigerian ethnic group that celebrates stealing, fraud or cheating, which is another
06:59name for stealing and we need to revive those core values that we have, he said.
07:05President and convener of the program, Blessing Oyefese, in his opening remarks said the event
07:11was a response to the yearnings of Nigerian youths to lead the country adding that they
07:16have what it takes to lead the country.
07:19It is not out of place that leaders of tomorrow must co-exist with regulatory agencies, policy
07:25makers, social impact makers to explore alternative ways for social economic development of our
07:31dear nation, Nigeria.
07:34She emphasized the need for youth engagements with stakeholders and policy formulators
07:38to position them for the development of the country by creating an enabling environment
07:44for Nigerian youths to thrive in the digital economy.
07:47Ololede Ogunubi, who represented the special assistant to the president on youth initiative,
07:54Titilope Badamosi, stated that the federal government has rolled out several youth empowerment
08:00initiatives for Nigerian youths.
08:03Under President Sinobu's administration, we have rolled out several initiatives at empowering
08:09our youths in the digital space.
08:12These include digital literacy campaigns that are spreading across the nation, the establishment
08:17of tech hubs to foster innovation, and support systems for tech startups that provide the
08:23necessary capital and mentorship to succeed.
08:26Our commitment is unwavering and our goal is clear, to create an enabling environment
08:32where every Nigerian youth can thrive in the digital economy.
08:37I urge all Nigerian youths to seize the opportunities presented by the digital economy.
08:43The future is digital, and it is in your hands.
08:47The federal government is committed to supporting you every step of the way, providing you with
08:52the tools, resources, and opportunities to succeed, she said.

09:04The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ola Ololede
09:11has called on lawyers across the country to always observe due diligence in their practices.
09:17This, according to him, is necessary for them to know the background of their clients so
09:23as not to run foul of the anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing AML-CFT regulations.
09:31Speaking on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at a panel discussion on money laundering during
09:37the 64th Annual General Conference of Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Conference 2024 in Lagos,
09:45the EFCC's boss said, As lawyers, we are supposed to hold a position of trust in our
09:51professional conduct.
09:53While we try to comply with international laws and regulations, we should also do what
09:59is right for ourselves so as to protect the sanctity of our profession, which is very
10:04key.
10:05While appreciating the international conventions against money laundering, the EFCC's chair
10:11emphasized that, Doing the right thing doesn't necessarily come from the way of international
10:17conventions.
10:19If you do the right things, they will automatically take you out of the gray list.
10:25It is expedient on you to, at least, know who your client is.
10:30You are expected to be paid from a legitimate source.
10:33If you are a victim of crimes, you will understand what I am saying.
10:39As lawyers, you must not, in any way, derogate or demean your professional commitment to
10:45your clients.
10:46Even a part of the money laundering act that we have evaluated doesn't stop me from enforcing
10:52the regulations of the EFCC act and other financial laws in Nigeria.
10:58Speaking further, Olukoyene emphasized that lawyers were not insulated from prosecution
11:03if they failed to do the right thing.
11:06He said, It is my duty to trace the proceeds of crimes.
11:11And if I trace it to you, I will invite you for questioning, and it is your duty to answer
11:17my questions.
11:18I mean, why do we talk about earning and abating crimes?
11:23Why do we have accessories before and after the fact?
11:27Knowing this will assist me to determine your level of culpability or otherwise.
11:32We are not saying you are not entitled to your pay, but what we are saying is that the
11:37money that comes to you must not be proceeds of crimes.
11:41In his reaction, the association's president, Yakubu Mekiau, sang, tried to clarify the
11:48salient points raised by Olukoyene during the session.
11:52He also urged lawyers to receive Olukoyene's charge with an open mind, adding that both
11:58the NBA and the Commission should be partners in the fight against corruption.
12:03Who else should be in the vanguard of the fight against corruption other than us?
12:08He said.
12:09Earlier, Olukoyene visited the EFCC stand at the venue of the convention and fielded
12:15questions from a number of attendees on varied issues about the activities of the Commission.
