00:00Duncan and the old mine. It was summer on the island of Sodal. Duncan loved this time of year.
00:12Today he was especially excited. He was going to take a party of holidaymakers to see cul-de-caves.
00:22But Mr. Percival, the thin controller, had some bad news.
00:27The machines at the main coaling plant have broken down. The fat controller needs coal until they are mended.
00:35Mr. Percival told Duncan and Rusty to bring coal down from their mine in the hills.
00:41Then Thomas will take it to the coaling plant, he said.
00:45And, Mr. Percival added, Bertie the bus will take the holidaymakers to cul-de-caves.
00:51Duncan was very disappointed. He wanted to go to the caves. Pulling coal trucks wasn't an exciting job at all.
01:02As Duncan was puffing slowly to the mine, he noticed an old line branching off into the trees and bushes.
01:11That looks like a good place for an adventure, said Duncan excitedly. I wonder what's down there?
01:19Duncan pushed his way through the barrier.
01:23Rusty was coming down the hill with trucks full of coal. He stopped when he saw Duncan.
01:29Look what you've done, Duncan, he hooted. Why did you break through the barrier?
01:34I wanted an adventure, Duncan wished quietly.
01:38This isn't the time for an adventure, tooted Rusty. We've got work to do.
01:44But Duncan didn't want to pull coal trucks anymore. All he could think about was having an adventure.
01:51So he puffed further down the line.
01:56Duncan clattered along the old line.
02:03Finally the line disappeared into the side of the mountain.
02:08It looked like the entrance to an old mine.
02:12This is better than caves any day, he told himself excitedly.
02:17And he puffed inside.
02:19Duncan was too excited to think clearly.
02:23He puffed straight into a roof support.
02:26And suddenly the roof collapsed behind him.
02:31Duncan was trapped.
02:33Oh no, Duncan wished. How am I going to get out?
02:40Back at the transfer yard, Thomas was waiting.
02:44Where's Duncan? Thomas asked.
02:47I don't know, said Rusty. I'd better go and look for him.
02:53It was dark and lonely in the old mine.
02:57Duncan didn't like it at all.
03:00He looked up at the shafts of light.
03:03Maybe if I whistle, someone will hear me?
03:06Duncan whistled as loudly as he could.
03:10But there was no reply.
03:12He tried again, even louder.
03:15But Rusty didn't hear Duncan's whistle.
03:18He was too far away.
03:22No one knows where I am, wished Duncan miserably.
03:26I'll have to find my own way out.
03:31Duncan puffed slowly forward.
03:36Inch by inch, Duncan crept further into the mine.
03:42It was dark in the tunnel and getting darker.
03:46Then suddenly he bumped into a set of buffers.
03:51Duncan could go no further.
03:54Now he was scared.
03:56I'm going to be stuck here forever, he whistled sadly.
04:01Rusty arrived at the broken barrier.
04:05Perhaps Duncan went looking for an adventure after all, he thought.
04:11Soon, Rusty came to the collapsed entrance.
04:15Duncan must be inside, he cried.
04:18Rusty was very worried.
04:21Duncan was still trapped.
04:24He puffed nervously backwards and forwards.
04:28He biffed the buffers again.
04:31This time he heard a squeaking noise.
04:35I know what that is, he thought.
04:38It's the sound of wheels going round.
04:41Duncan edged forward very slowly.
04:45He hit the buffers again and pushed them carefully.
04:49They moved, and as they moved the wheels squeaked.
04:54Duncan hadn't hit buffers at all.
04:56He had run into some trucks.
04:58If there are some trucks on this track, he thought, maybe a lead somewhere.
05:04He pushed the trucks slowly forward along the track.
05:10Soon he saw a light at the end of the tunnel.
05:15But the way out was boarded up.
05:18Must think clearly, must think clearly, he huffed to himself.
05:22Then he had an idea.
05:26With all his puff, Duncan bashed the trucks.
05:30And they crashed and smashed through the boards.
05:38Duncan was free.
05:40I did it, he hooted happily.
05:45Rusty heard the crashing sound.
05:50He hurried on to see what it was.
05:53Soon he found Duncan.
05:56Where have you been, he cried.
05:59I had an adventure, puffed Duncan happily.
06:02And look what I found.
06:04Rusty could hardly believe it.
06:07Duncan was pushing trucks full of coal.
06:12Duncan and Rusty raced the trucks down the mountain to Thomas.
06:18Duncan and Rusty pulled into the transfer yards.
06:23Thomas was very happy to see them.
06:26And so was Mr. Percival.
06:29Duncan told Mr. Percival all about his adventure.
06:33Mr. Percival told Duncan he was very lucky.
06:37Duncan should not have broken through the barrier.
06:40Adventure can be full of surprises, Duncan, Mr. Percival told him.
06:45Some good and some not so good.
06:48Rusty and Thomas agreed.
06:51So next time I have an adventure, whistled Duncan,
06:55I will note a thing clearly all the time.
