00:00Duncan the Humbug.
00:17It was Christmas on the island of Sodor.
00:25It was a very busy time.
00:31And a very happy time too.
00:35All the engines enjoyed it.
00:39Except Duncan.
00:42He didn't like Christmas one bit.
00:46Bah! Humbug!
00:49Hello, Duncan.
00:51Hello, Rheneas.
00:53Don't you just hate these cold winter mornings?
00:57It takes so long to get a steam up.
01:00I don't mind, really.
01:02And if the points are frozen at the junction,
01:05that means even more hanging about.
01:08See you later then, Duncan.
01:20Oh no, I'm getting slow.
01:28Hello, Duncan. How are you?
01:31Well, not so great as you can see.
01:34I very nearly had an accident.
01:36Why don't you use your sandbox?
01:38I've used up all my sand.
01:40I expect there's none left at the depot either.
01:50Morning, Duncan. Isn't this great?
01:54It's busy and everyone's so happy.
01:57Well, it's all right for some.
02:00All these extra passengers are slowing me down.
02:03Come on, hurry up.
02:09Bah! Humbug!
02:13On we go.
02:15On we go. Finally!
02:18As Duncan went on his way,
02:20Skarloey felt all of his festive spirit fly out of his funnel.
02:26Oh my!
02:29By the time Skarloey arrived at the depot,
02:32he didn't feel very Christmassy at all.
02:36Duncan was complaining to me about the cold
02:39and he told me there was no sand for our sandbox.
02:42But there's plenty.
02:44He told me his passengers were slowing him down.
02:48Duncan seems determined to turn the holiday season into one big chore.
02:54I'm sure he'll cheer up when he sees the depot.
03:02Bah! Humbug!
03:04All the snow and sand is turning into slush
03:07and my wheels are wet and gritty.
03:09Well, I feel good as new.
03:12The Fat Controller is giving us all a fresh coat of paint for the winter.
03:16Typical.
03:18Trust the standard gauge engines to get special treatment.
03:22But the Thin Controllers had the same idea.
03:25There's a new coat of paint for us narrow gauge engines too.
03:29A fresh coat of paint?
03:33And not before time.
03:36With all the work I've done,
03:37picking up extra passengers,
03:39remembering their new seasonal timetable,
03:42waiting around in the bitter cold,
03:44getting bugs in my face.
03:46If we could only find a way to stop Duncan complaining all the time.
03:51Or even just for one day.
03:53I think I'll have a word with the Thin Controller.
03:58First thing the following morning,
04:02Duncan sped to the steamworks.
04:04Where he found the Thin Controller talking to Victor.
04:08Morning, sir. I've come for my Christmas coat of paint.
04:12Is that right?
04:14Well, I hear from the other engines
04:17that you've been grumbling a lot lately.
04:20What? No.
04:22Well, no more than usual.
04:24You've been making everyone feel unhappy.
04:27And when engines aren't happy, they don't work so well.
04:31That's just the way I am.
04:32And you can like it or not.
04:35Well, I don't like it, Duncan.
04:37You can be first in line for a new coat of paint tomorrow morning,
04:42if and only if you can be cheerful for the rest of today.
04:47Ah, I see.
04:49Well, no problem, sir.
04:52I can do that.
04:54Don't forget now.
04:56Cheerful all day.
04:58The other engines will be keeping an eye on you.
05:03Duncan was determined to get himself a new coat of paint.
05:08I can be cheerful all day.
05:10Need bother.
05:12But then he met Rheneas at the junction.
05:15Let's be careful, Duncan.
05:17And go extra slowly with all this snow.
05:20Thanks for the reminder, Rheneas.
05:32At Crovan's Gate station,
05:35Duncan had to wait as families got on board with extra baggage.
05:40Ah, hello there, Duncan.
05:43Everything all right?
05:45Completely fine, thank you.
05:53At the level crossing, the gates were frozen.
05:57So Duncan's passengers decided to hum a jolly Christmas song to pass the time.
06:04But Duncan didn't like it at all.
06:07He was about to give them a blast from his whistle when Rusty came along.
06:17What a lovely song, Duncan, isn't it?
06:21Isn't it?
06:24And then poor Duncan got stuck behind Luke, who was struggling up a slippery slope.
06:35But for sake, Luke, what's the hold up?
06:39Rusty saw that Duncan had forgotten to be cheerful.
06:43Sorry, Duncan. I can't go on because my wheels keep slipping on the icy track.
06:48Can't you just grit it up with a little sand?
06:52I'm afraid my sandbox is empty.
06:56Duncan realised that by getting grumpy, he had hurt Luke's feelings.
07:02So he buffered up to Luke and dropped some sand on the road.
07:08He gave him a little push to help him on his way again.
07:12Woo-hoo! Thanks, Duncan!
07:15And Rusty saw all of this too.
07:18Duncan was a little sad that he'd lost his temper.
07:22He knew what that meant. No coat of paint for him.
07:31But the following day, Duncan made his way to the steamworks anyway.
07:37He had decided to apologise to Finn Control.
07:41Good morning, sir. I know I failed your challenge and I wasn't cheerful all day, but...
07:46Say no more, Duncan. You did a good thing yesterday.
07:51Helping out poor Luke when he was in a spot of bother.
07:54Oh, well, I suppose maybe I did.
07:58And for that, you deserve a special treat.
08:02You mean a new coat of paint?
08:05That's right, Duncan.
08:07Thank you, sir. That's very kind.
08:10From now on, I will try and be more cheerful, sir.
08:13At least some of the time.
08:16Very good, Duncan.
08:18But I think I might have been wrong to ask you to be cheerful all day.
08:23You do grumble a lot, but that's just the way you are.
08:27And it doesn't make you any less useful.
08:30Merry Christmas to you, Duncan!
08:33Merry Christmas to one and all!
08:37Bah humbug!
08:43Merry Christmas!
