00:00The little engines were busy clearing their railway of leaves and broken branches.
00:07Peter Sam and Rusty often worked together.
00:12One day, Rusty helped Peter Sam to a water tower.
00:17And once there, whistled goodbye.
00:21Peter Sam felt much better after his long drink, but the trucks were bored.
00:25Let's break away, they giggled.
00:27The loads were heavy and the couplings old.
00:30One snack.
00:37Faster, faster, shouted the trucks.
00:39A sign read, slow, steep bends and ravine ahead.
00:43But the silly trucks never saw it.
00:46Then, it was too late.
00:56Peter Sam arrived at the scene of the disaster.
00:59His driver sighed.
01:01This was our fault, we didn't secure them properly.
01:03We'll have to get help to pull them out.
01:06The fat controller will be very annoyed.
01:09And he was.
01:11You will shunt trucks in the yards till I can trust you again.
01:14Duncan was delighted with Peter Sam's dilemma.
01:18Fancy not securing your trucks on a hill.
01:20They'll come back to spook you in your special funnel.
01:24And who's to say that you're not afraid of ghosts, snapped Rusty.
01:28Ha! Ghosts! Things that go bump in the night are rubbish.
01:32Well, I'll tell you a story that'll make your funnel quiver, Rusty said.
01:36A long time ago, a little engine was returning home.
01:41It was a misty, moonlit night.
01:44As the engine crossed the old iron bridge, he suddenly lost control
01:48and plunged over the side into the swamps below.
01:52He was never found again.
02:06But many a workman will tell you that when the moon is full,
02:10they have seen the little engine trying to get home,
02:13but he never reaches the other side.
02:16So what do you think of that, Duncan?
02:20Ha! Nonsense, replied Duncan, and he puffed away.
02:24Never mind him, Peter Sam.
02:26He'd be frightened if he really saw a ghost.
02:29This gave Peter Sam's driver an idea.
02:32Let's play a trick on Duncan.
02:34The next day, he spoke to Duncan's driver and fireman,
02:37who agreed.
02:38We'll do it tonight, they said.
02:42Duncan had to take coal trucks to the slate mines
02:45and then bring slate trucks back.
02:49Duncan's driver decided, as part of the plan,
02:51to cross the old iron bridge.
02:53Haunted bridge, ha, snorted Duncan.
02:56It's as tame as a pet rabbit.
02:59But all the same, he kept thinking about Rusty's story.
03:03When dusk fell, he was keen to leave.
03:06If we don't go now,
03:07Skarloey will take my favourite place in the sheds.
03:10We can't go back until we've collected all the trucks,
03:13his driver replied.
03:15He could see their plan was working because Duncan was nervous.
03:20When night fell, they set off.
03:24The moon was full,
03:26and the mists were rising around the old iron bridge.
03:32Duncan whistled, and the sound echoed everywhere.
03:43Then ahead, he saw flickering lights.
03:46His driver knew they were only little insects that shine brightly at night,
03:50but to Duncan, they looked like an engine.
03:55Next, his driver secretly threw a rock from the cab into the ravine below.
04:01It's the ghost!
04:03Take me back, take me back, please!
04:11When Duncan reached the safety of his shed, he closed his eyes tightly.
04:15Spooked are you, Duncan, laughed his driver.
04:18No!
04:19Well, Duncan, I'm asleep, and refused to open his eyes.
04:23He did, though, when he thought his driver wasn't looking,
04:26just to make sure that he was still there.
