00:00Duncan and the Grumpy Passenger
00:16Duncan the narrow-gauge engine pulls passenger coaches.
00:23He takes people to work every morning and brings them home from work again in the evening.
00:30At last! Oh dear.
00:33Hello, Duncan. How are you?
00:36How am I? I'll tell you how I am. I've got an awfully wobbly wheel.
00:42Maybe you should go to the steamworks.
00:44Oh, aye. I already did, but Victor told me there was nothing wrong with it.
00:50Typical. Have you seen the track at Crosney Curran?
00:55No. Why? What's happening there?
00:57Don't ask the thin controller, because he says nothing.
01:02But every time I pass through, my rivets rattle and my funnel shakes.
01:08And now look at my wobbly wheel.
01:10But...
01:11And, to top it all, I've this one passenger who's always grumbling and complaining.
01:18He's even had the cheek to say I'm not doing my job properly.
01:23Well, you are running a bit late, Duncan.
01:27Oh, don't you start.
01:32Duncan was an engine who liked to complain himself.
01:37But what he said about his passenger was true.
01:41Duncan's grumpy passenger complained almost as much as Duncan did.
01:47He complained if Duncan was running late.
01:50And he complained when the coaches were too full.
01:56He complained when Duncan went too slow.
02:03And he complained when Duncan went too fast.
02:20Hello, Duncan. Everything all right?
02:24No. I have a very grumpy passenger, Peter Sam.
02:28He's never happy, even though he's got nothing to complain about.
02:33Really? Is that true?
02:36What? If it's not true now, I'll soon make sure it is.
02:41Duncan went to the depot to pick up some extra coaches.
02:48Hello, Duncan. What are you doing?
02:51I'm picking up some extra coaches for tonight.
02:54So there'll be plenty of room for everyone.
02:59None of my passengers will have any reason to complain.
03:03But Duncan will.
03:05None of my passengers will have any reason to complain.
03:09But Duncan, Skarloey needs those coaches for his passengers.
03:16That evening, Duncan was in good time to pick up his regular passengers.
03:22Hop on board, everyone. Plenty of space for all of you.
03:36But Skarloey couldn't take his passengers anywhere.
03:40Hey, Duncan! What are you doing with my coaches? Come back here!
03:45What kind of service is that?
03:47Look at the time! Come on, do something about it!
03:49Are you going to do something?
03:51As Duncan sped along, he came across some workmen, busy on the line.
03:57Oh, no! Warning flags!
04:00If I slow down, there's going to be complaints from that passenger.
04:05So Duncan didn't slow down, and the workmen were very cross.
04:13Duncan was feeling very pleased with himself.
04:17He was happy.
04:21And so were all his passengers.
04:24Except, of course, for one.
04:36But the following morning, the grumpy passenger was not on the platform.
04:43Hello, Duncan. Isn't it time you set off?
04:46Aye, but one of my passengers is going to be very grumpy indeed if he misses his train.
04:55The grumpy passenger had slept through his alarm clock and was running late.
05:02So Duncan waited on the platform, even after the guard had blown his whistle.
05:12Well, you can't see he has anything to complain about this morning.
05:17But the other passengers were not so happy, because now they were late.
05:23And the station master was cross too.
05:28Oh, hurry up, Duncan! Get out of the way!
05:32You've made me late too, and my passengers are not happy about it.
05:39Everyone was complaining.
05:43Oh, God, no. Oh, good Lord.
05:46Yes, of course. What a terror. Call this a railway?
05:49Every day something goes wrong. So predictable.
05:52Seats uncomfortable. Trains are always late.
05:56Duncan was trying to make up for lost time when he came across the workmen once again.
06:03I cannot be late. I cannot hear any more complaints.
06:14I cannot seem to do anything right today.
06:18At the end of the journey, the thin controller was waiting for Duncan.
06:26Sir, I know what you're going to say, and I'm truly sorry.
06:32Thank you for saying so, Duncan.
06:34But why did you take Skarloey's coaches and speed through the railworks and ignore the guard's whistle?
06:41Because of that grumpy passenger, sir. I was trying to stop him complaining.
06:47Duncan, I know that passenger well.
06:50He's always grumpy and he always finds something to complain about.
06:55But today, you made everybody grumpy.
06:59Yes, sir. I know, sir.
07:02From now on, you must do your best to ignore that man and get on with doing your job properly.
07:09Will do. Thank you, sir.
07:18That evening, when Duncan passed the men working on the line, he decided to slow right down.
07:32Oh, come on! Hurry up! I'm going to be late for my tea!
07:38Evening, Duncan. It's surprising to see you smiling at the end of a busy day.
07:43But I've had a good day, Rheneas. Today, I learnt a very important lesson.
07:49I'm going to change my ways and be a different engine from now on.
07:54Just you wait and see.
07:56Really? You mean you're going to stop grumbling once and for all?
08:00No, I mean I'm going to stop listening to that grumpy old passenger and just get on with being really useful.
08:08Good for you, Duncan! Good for you!
08:13All right, all right. I'm going.
08:18Stop grumbling indeed. It's not me who's always grumbling.
08:22Ouch! There goes my seatbelt.
08:25Stop grumbling indeed. It's not me who's always grumbling.
08:29Ouch! There goes my wobbly wheel again.
08:33I knew this would happen.
08:35Why do people always think it's me who's always grumbling?
08:38I mean, I've never grumbled in my life. Me, grumbling? Don't think so.
