00:00Mike's whistle. Rex and Bert are two of the very small engines on the island of Sodor that work on the miniature railway near Arlsboro.
00:14And then there's Mike, the red engine. He can be rather grumpy at times and he doesn't much like pulling passengers either.
00:27One morning Thomas was laughing as he arrived at Arlsboro West to collect ballast stone for his brunch line.
00:37What's so funny?
00:39It's Dirk! Have you heard his whistle this morning? His driver boiled an egg on it and some of it got stuck! But don't laugh.
00:49Was that really you, Dirk? I never knew you could boil an egg on a steam whistle.
00:56Neither did I. And I don't recommend it.
01:00Alright, alright. Don't go on about it, Dirk.
01:09Dirk, you shouldn't make such horrible sounds. It's shocking.
01:14I'm going to whistle like that to everyone today!
01:19If engines can't whistle properly, they shouldn't try.
01:23Then why do you?
01:25I was talking about Duck. Unlike him, I have an excellent whistle.
01:34If I had a whistle like yours, Mike, I'd lose it!
01:39What?
01:41Whistles are very important, Rex. Engines without whistles aren't proper engines at all.
01:48Mike's steam pressure went so high that his safety valve blew up!
01:54Oh dear, is Mike overheating again?
01:58Mr. Fergus Duncan is known as the Small Controller because he's in charge of the miniature railway.
02:05But he's not actually small. In fact, he's rather tall.
02:09I shall have to put you on lighter duties. I suggest you take the passenger train today.
02:15No, sir. Please, sir. I'll be fine. You know I prefer hauling goods to passengers.
02:21Sorry, Mike, but I can't have you blowing off steam like this.
02:25Bert shall take the goods train today and you shall take passengers once your safety valve is back in order.
02:33Oh!
02:36Mike was still in a bad mood as he went to collect the passengers.
02:42Oh, it's so sweet! Oh, it's so lovely!
02:44What a cute little steam engine!
02:46Blah, blah, blah. Lovely day. What a cute little steam engine. Isn't he sweet?
02:53Behave yourself, Mike.
03:02Nothing wrong with my whistle!
03:16Silly Bex and Bert, making fun of my whistle!
03:20They're jealous! They're jealous! I'll show them! I'll show them!
03:25There are places along the line where boards are put up to let the engines know that they have to whistle.
03:32But Mike was blowing his whistle at everything!
03:47WHISTLE BLOWS
04:08When they reached the end of the line, Mike's driver checked him over.
04:13I just can't seem to work out what's wrong with you today.
04:17There's nothing wrong with me! I'm fine! Just don't go thinking about cooking an egg on my whistle!
04:24I won't!
04:27But as they were travelling back along the line, Mike's driver heard a funny noise.
04:34What's that?
04:35What's what?
04:36That funny sound!
04:38Don't you start!
04:40Listen! Something is rattling on your boiler!
04:45Never mind that! You can tighten up whatever it is when we get back!
04:49But then there was trouble.
04:54Get out of my way!
04:57Patience, Mike! The cow will move on in time!
05:01Oh, that cow is always wandering onto the tracks and she only makes me cross!
05:09Shoo! Shoo! Shoo! Go on!
05:13Right! This is the last straw! Get out of my way, you silly animal!
05:18Mike got so cross and he whistled so hard that his whistle kept coming right off like a rocket!
05:32So that's what was loose!
05:35Oh! Oh! Oh!
05:40Mike's driver and his guard searched the field trying to find the whistle cap, but there was no sign of it.
05:47The passengers were getting impatient.
05:50Hurry up!
05:54What are you looking for?
05:55I'm going to be late and miss my connection! What's so important about a whistle anyway?
06:01Oh! I have to whistle at certain places along the line to let others know I'm coming! That's orders!
06:08Haven't you found my whistle yet?
06:13This won't do at all! We could be here until tomorrow morning!
06:17We'll have to whistle for you!
06:21Good idea! I can whistle!
06:32Another hand!
06:45So Mike continued along the line and every time he came to a place where he was supposed to whistle,
06:52his driver and guard and the passengers all whistled for him.
07:02They made more noise than he ever did, but Mike felt foolish and improper without a whistle.
07:12Mike was running rather late when he got back to Arlsborough and Duck had to wait for him.
07:18Traffic jam, was it, Mike?
07:20No, there was a cow on the line and a problem with my whistle.
07:29Well, I know what that's like!
07:32At least my driver finally cleaned mine out!
07:41What's up with Mike?
07:43Oh, take no notice of him, Thomas! He's an improper engine!
07:48Improper? What do you mean? He's got no whistle!
07:53It's shocking! We don't approve of engines without whistles, do we, Mike?
07:59Oh! Did someone boil an egg on it?
08:02No! He got cross with the cow!
08:06That's right! And all he had to do was say,
08:10MOVE!
08:14Or maybe go,
08:18Poor Mike wished he didn't get cross so easily!
08:22If he hadn't been so hot-headed, he might never have lost his whistle in the first place!
08:28Oh, give it a rest, won't you?
