00:00:59Last night, Larry Zabisko, it was finally signed, the contract signed.
00:01:04It will be for Starrcade December 29th between Roddy, Roddy Piper and
00:01:08Hollywood Hulk Hogan.
00:01:09You've gotta give the kudos to Roddy Piper.
00:01:12He said he was gonna sign.
00:01:14He came out last night and he got it signed, but he paid a heavy price.
00:01:18He really did pay a heavy price.
00:01:19As a matter of fact, Eric Bischoff led the contention out for
00:01:22the New World Order.
00:01:24There was confrontations all over the place last night.
00:01:27As a matter of fact, the confrontation started with Piper and
00:01:30Eric Bischoff and ended with Piper and Hollywood Hulk Hogan.
00:01:35We will show you that interview, that contract signing in its entirety
00:01:40as it happened last night, but it has been signed.
00:01:43And we'll be telling you how you can be a part of this mega event.
00:01:46Finally, the match of the decade has been signed.
00:01:49In addition here, fans, tonight, we will begin the tournament to crown a new
00:01:52United States heavyweight champion.
00:01:55You may know, and I'm sure you do,
00:01:56the Giant is walking around with that title belt.
00:01:59He does not own that title belt.
00:02:01And the WCW Championship Committee realizes,
00:02:04because of the injury to Ric Flair, we must now crown a new champ.
00:02:08Two first round matches here tonight in this two hour program.
00:02:10Well, a tournament's the only fair way.
00:02:11Again, the Giant took off with the belt.
00:02:13It is not legally or rightfully his.
00:02:16Tournament is the only way to solve it.
00:02:17We're also gonna go back many times to a spectacular event
00:02:20that was held last night, World War III, where many people stepped it up a notch.
00:02:25Many people showed their true colors last night.
00:02:28One man in particular will be in our matchup, our opening matchup.
00:02:31That's the total package, Lex Luger.
00:02:33You know, I think Lex Luger proved everybody wrong, Tony.
00:02:36People months ago didn't trust him, but last night,
00:02:38Lex Luger showed his true colors.
00:02:41He almost beat the New World Order by himself.
00:02:43And WCW are gonna put its feet firmly on the ground tonight,
00:02:46as we are set to go, ladies and gentlemen.
00:02:48We have two hours of the best of world championship wrestling here tonight,
00:02:52and we go to the ring, David Penter.
00:02:54The opening bout as we start the tournament
00:02:56to crown a new United States Heavyweight Champion tonight on Nitro.
00:03:01Ladies and gentlemen, the opening contest live on Monday Nitro
00:03:05is the first match in a tournament for the United States Heavyweight
00:03:09Championship.
00:03:10It is set for one fall.
00:03:11Introducing first, representing the Four Horsemen,
00:03:16he's from the state of Minnesota, The Enforcer, Arne Anderson.
00:03:23Arne Anderson opens up this two-hour telecast.
00:03:26And I can say this, Larry, and I think you would agree,
00:03:30I have never seen a week like we have had in world championship wrestling.
00:03:35And I start with last week in Nitro, when it all came to light.
00:03:40And the question still remains, and we're still
00:03:42not sure why Eric Bischoff had worked so hard to prevent this match from being
00:03:47signed.
00:03:48However, it was signed, and then if you couple that with what happened,
00:03:51it was wild.
00:03:52Well, it was signed, no thanks to Eric Bischoff.
00:03:56Piper, obviously a man of his word.
00:03:59He did what he said he was going to do.
00:04:02But can he follow it up?
00:04:04Can he break the foundation?
00:04:06Can he beat Edward Hulk Hogan?
00:04:09His opponent, from Chicago, Illinois, the total package, Luke Luger.
00:04:19So the tournament is underway to crown a new United States Champion.
00:04:26And as everyone knows, it takes you back to earlier this year,
00:04:32when the New World Order attacked Ric Flair before his matchup.
00:04:38Flair, of course, since that time, has had major surgery on his shoulder.
00:04:44He is no longer the US Champ because of that 30-day clause
00:04:46our fans have been following this sport for so long realize it's about.
00:04:50However, even though he's got the title belt,
00:04:53the old cliche is possession is nine-tenths of a wall.
00:04:57In this case, baloney.
00:04:59He doesn't have the belt.
00:05:01If need be, we can make a new US Heavyweight title
00:05:04belt, because we're going to determine a brand new champion.
00:05:07All right, look at it, Arn Anderson, endomorphic human being.
00:05:11A man who wants revenge on Luger.
00:05:13Remember what happened about a month ago,
00:05:15where Lex Luger caught Arn Anderson in the rack, wouldn't release it.
00:05:19I think Arn Anderson is still taped up from that.
00:05:22Well, what a way to start out this United States Heavyweight Championship
00:05:26tournament.
00:05:26Two men who definitely do not like each other.
00:05:30As you said, Larry, had a personal issue.
00:05:32And Lex Luger, I could say he's a changed man,
00:05:36and maybe that is not correct, because he has always
00:05:39been one of the greatest athletes the sport's ever seen.
00:05:42As far as his athletic ability, it hasn't changed.
00:05:45But as far as his demeanor, his intensity in the ring, it has changed.
00:05:49And Arn Anderson, usually very intimidating to start out with,
00:05:52looks very concerned as he goes up against Luger here.
00:05:55Well, he's going to approach Lex Luger a lot different.
00:05:58Arn Anderson knows what he's doing again.
00:06:00His lower back still taped from his last encounter
00:06:03when he was held up in the torture rack.
00:06:05Luger, he showed us last night at World War III how explosive he could be.
00:06:10And look at him.
00:06:11Demands a genetic wonder.
00:06:13And again, probably my pick to win the US tournament.
00:06:19I would think he's one of the odds-on favorites.
00:06:21There is no question about it.
00:06:23And the fans are getting behind Luger and Anderson very tentatively.
00:06:26Starts this matchup, finally they hook up.
00:06:29Yeah, looks like two bulls locking up in there, both these guys.
00:06:32Tough competitors, Arn Anderson, more experienced.
00:06:35Lex Luger, look at his body, like 0% body fat.
00:06:39Luger does not get tired.
00:06:41And we saw that last night at the end of World War III, almost,
00:06:44when he put the giant in the torture rack.
00:06:48I'm going to show you some of the pictures from last night of World War III.
00:06:53It was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, battle royal we have ever seen.
00:06:57And it all happened on pay-per-view.
00:06:59Arn Anderson is going to think twice about trying to run in to the total package.
00:07:04Lex Luger, Larry.
00:07:04He may think twice about getting back in the ring again.
00:07:07I don't think Arn Anderson is 100%.
00:07:09He's going to do a different type of strategy,
00:07:12play a different game of human chess here,
00:07:14try to avoid at all costs Lex Luger getting him up in that torture rack.
00:07:21Anderson trying to slow things down, a couple of reasons there.
00:07:24Of course, the injury as well.
00:07:26And Anderson trying to offense.
00:07:27Always at a disadvantage, fans, when you
00:07:30were trying to go into the ring against an opponent who is already there.
00:07:33Well, when Anderson saw Luger that close, he should have backed off.
00:07:36Don't get in between the ropes.
00:07:38Uh-oh.
00:07:40Luger goes for the arm.
00:07:41Remember, Arn Anderson, as you probably well know,
00:07:44is a southpaw, left-handed punch, one of the best in our sport.
00:07:48And Luger trying to take that weapon away from him early on here in the matchup.
00:07:51The total package Lex Luger.
00:07:54First of the first round matches in this tournament, Larry.
00:07:58I love to hear it.
00:07:59Luger's almost using the ring as his ally.
00:08:02And that's smart thinking.
00:08:04If he could get rid of one of the arms of Arn Anderson.
00:08:07Of course, one of Arn Anderson's big weapons is that DDT.
00:08:10He likes to grab you around the neck and dump you.
00:08:13A kick to the shoulder.
00:08:15He's working on that arm once again.
00:08:16We'll have another first round tournament match tonight.
00:08:19Conan and Eddie Guerrero later on in this telecast, plus Diamond Dallas Page.
00:08:24And we have a big main event tag team match.
00:08:26And our number two faces a beer, Harlem Heat.
00:08:29And we're gonna show you that contract signing later on in the second hour.
00:08:34Rowdy Roddy Piper at Hulk Hogan.
00:08:36There's a lot of questions still that remain about Piper's conditioning.
00:08:40His condition, is he 100%?
00:08:43The answer is no.
00:08:44Going into this matchup now, a month away, December 29th at Starrcade.
00:08:50But he's signed it, but he's got a month.
00:08:52Yes, he does.
00:08:52Actually, we'll find out more about his condition later.
00:08:54But again, he paid a heavy price to get that contract signed.

00:11:05And Luger now kicking in the rib cage.
00:11:07Well, he's kind of trying to concentrate on the ribs,
00:11:09trying to straighten that arm of Anderson.
00:11:11That's why Arn's coming back with his legs.

00:11:32Here on TNT, ladies and gentlemen, it was a big weekend for
00:11:35World Championship Wrestling as Luger and Arn Anderson get it started.
00:11:40I tell you, we had a wild event not only last night in Norfolk,
00:11:43we had a big crowd at the Baltimore Arena this past Saturday.
00:11:46Coming up on WCW Saturday night, this coming weekend on TBS,
00:11:51we're gonna show you some of the footage of that wild fight between Kevin Sullivan
00:11:55and Chris Benoit that really got out of hand in Baltimore this past weekend, Larry.
00:12:00Yeah, that was wild again.
00:12:01I heard they tore the complete arena apart.
00:12:05One of the biggest crowds we've had on hand many,
00:12:07many years to see WCW World Championship Wrestling.
00:12:12And here in the first round tournament match, back elbow, great timing by Luger.
00:12:19And both men are dazed here,
00:12:21obviously winded from this physical encounter early here.
00:12:23Well, Anderson had him down on the mat.
00:12:25Luger did his best, got back up on his feet,
00:12:27caught Anderson in the face with that elbow.
00:12:29He ran right into a knee.
00:12:31Arn Anderson trying to get the wind out of Luger, but
00:12:33he's in such great physical shape.
00:12:35That's a hard thing to do.
00:12:37I think Luger made a mistake there.
00:12:38The mistake was he tried to whip him in, but he followed him in.
00:12:41Instead of waiting on him.
00:12:43That enabled Anderson to turn around quickly and kick him in the gut.
00:12:45Well, both of these guys, I think they're trying to get a quick victory there.
00:12:49They're both hurt.
00:12:50Anderson's on 100%.
00:12:52Of course, Luger cannot be feeling great after World War III.
00:12:56I think they're just making a mistake and
00:12:57trying to rush into beating the other guy when you have to take your time.
00:13:02Elbow right in the throat, almost.
00:13:04A warning by Mark Curtis, the referee, about where that elbow was.
00:13:08There it goes again.
00:13:09That one was, I believe, right on the sternum.
00:13:11Now, the total package likes Luger.
00:13:13Yeah, Arn's gonna hit him in his sternum or
00:13:15try to hit him right across the larynx.
00:13:17Anything to get the endurance out of Luger.
00:13:21Picking up Luger, a catapult.
00:13:24That caught him right in the throat.
00:13:26Tell you what, that will mess up a neck in a hurry.
00:13:28Give you a herniated disc, if nothing else, whiplash.
00:13:34You can hear Luger trying to suck the air in.
00:13:37Almost got a three count.
00:13:39Anderson seems very frustrated there.
00:13:40Yeah, he wants it over.
00:13:42I don't think he wants to be in there.
00:13:45The longer it goes, the better chance I think Luger has in terms of endurance,
00:13:49especially considering Arn Anderson has still got that sore lower back.
00:13:54Outside into the floor.

00:14:56up, we are looking at Superman in the flesh in the Total Package Lex Luger.
00:15:01He showed that last night.
00:15:03He's taking kind of long here.
00:15:05He got him up.
00:15:07Down he goes, critical suplex.
00:15:10Again, staying on that small of the back, Arn Anderson, he's in trouble.
00:15:15I know this man, he wouldn't be laying there if he could get up, and
00:15:19he's barely moving.
00:15:20Luger wants to rack him, I believe.

00:18:35Fans often rolling live here on TNT, but right now, let's take you to some of the sights
00:18:40from last night's World War III pay-per-view.
00:18:42Spectacular from Norfolk, Virginia.
00:18:44And Larry, it really started out wild with Ray Mysterio Jr.
00:18:48going up against a man with eight title belts with Sonny Ono, the Ultimo Dragon.
00:18:52It was a great opening bout.
00:18:53Well, it was an outrageous match.
00:18:55I mean, talk about two guys that resemble evil Knievel without the motorcycles.
00:18:59These guys were up in the air, all over the place, doing just unbelievable maneuvers.
00:19:06And the Ultimo Dragon, of course, proved his greatness.
00:19:09He sure did prove his greatness.
00:19:10He holds on to those eight titles.
00:19:12One title that he does not have is a WCW Cruiserweight title.
00:19:15A lot of high-risk maneuvers, but the Ultimo Dragon did come out and prevail.
00:19:19Another match last night, a lot of controversy.
00:19:21Had Nick Patrick coming out wrestling against Chris Jericho.
00:19:25Nick Patrick was the man, of course, who's been a referee.
00:19:28Chris Jericho led into this match by Teddy Long with one hand tied behind his back.
00:19:33Jericho used his quickness and his power to win the match.
00:19:36Well, still, but Jericho, a professional athlete, outweighs Patrick by 100 pounds.
00:19:41Patrick, look at right there, still with the injured neck.
00:19:44You believe that?
00:19:45Well, look at his face.
00:19:46Yeah, that was his arm that was hurting him, and his lower back hurt him.
00:19:50I don't think his neck hurt him at all.
00:19:51He didn't have time to worry about the neck.
00:19:53He had to be concerned about Chris Jericho.
00:19:55And also, there was a match last night where Jeff Jarrett went one-on-one against the Giant,
00:19:59and Jeff Jarrett, from the opening bell, took the fight right to this big guy.
00:20:03Well, again, you can't criticize Jeff Jarrett for not having guts.
00:20:06This guy got in the ring with the Giant.
00:20:08And then there was Sting, who made an appearance.
00:20:10Sting came in.
00:20:11He attacked Jeff Jarrett once again, helping the Giant with the big chokeslam
00:20:17to the victory over Jeff Jarrett.
00:20:19Yeah, what was with that?
00:20:20I have no idea what was with that.
00:20:24Oh, come on.
00:20:26Don't you leave me stranded again.
00:20:28I am going to stay right here.

00:51:08exclusively on pay-per-view of Mike Tanay.
00:51:10What an event it was last night.
00:51:11Well, it certainly was.
00:51:12We've talked about it being a memorable evening, and we have just a very,
00:51:16very small example of some of the great matchups last night at World War III
00:51:20upcoming.
00:51:21We're gonna give you a little highlight package of at least three of the big
00:51:24matches last night in Norfolk.
00:51:26Let's take a look right now at some of the sites that you saw last night.
00:51:28Brain, the Amazing French Canadians, the Harlem Heat came out.
00:51:31Really a high-impact tag team match.
00:51:33Well, I thought the Amazing French Canadians had the upper hand.
00:51:36They were doing very, very well until, well, you know what happened.
00:51:39Well, I know exactly what happened.
00:51:40But as a matter of fact, later in the match,
00:51:42the Amazing French Canadians really tried a high-risk maneuver.
00:51:45Look, they used the steel steps.
00:51:47Two sets.
00:51:47Two sets of steel steps and tried to get the win.
00:51:50But it was the Harlem Hangover that got the one, two, three.
00:51:53And then what happened?
00:51:54But Sherry got her five minutes against Colonel Robert Le Pacquiao,
00:51:59and down he goes.
00:52:00How about those clotheslines and all those moves, Mike?
00:52:03Well, that was the payoff.
00:52:04The two clotheslines by Sherry and then that flying cross body block off the top.
00:52:08How about that Cruiserweight title matchup
00:52:10with Psychosis challenging the new Cruiserweight champion Dean Malenko?
00:52:14Talk about high-risk moves.
00:52:15Look at that.
00:52:16And then this powerbomb by Malenko.
00:52:18I think what we saw in that one, Mike, was the fact
00:52:20that a man wanted to keep it on the mat, Dean Malenko, and was successful.
00:52:23He did.
00:52:24He grounded Psychosis.
00:52:25He was successful in retaining that title that he just recently regained.
00:52:29There's the bridge.
00:52:30With the bridge and the one, two, three, he is still the Cruiserweight champion.
00:52:33And then, Brain, it was wild.
00:52:35It was that triangle match for the World Tag Team Championship.
00:52:38And it was a fight.
00:52:38Dusty Rhodes said they were clobbered, and everybody was clobbered
00:52:42from the beginning of that bell.
00:52:43All six men in the ring, no one knew who was legal.
00:52:45The referee had his hands full.
00:52:47It was just a street fight.
00:52:48One odd thing about a triangle match, the fact
00:52:50you've got to be in the ring to make a pin.
00:52:52At one point in the match, both members of the New World
00:52:55Order, the Outsiders, were tagged in.
00:52:57It came right out of all six men wrestling.
00:53:00Finally, Ming and Nobs both made the tag,
00:53:03bringing both members of the New World Order in.
00:53:05They didn't want to wrestle each other.
00:53:06As a matter of fact, they were going to lay down and let the other one pin.
00:53:09But finally, cooler heads prevailed.
00:53:12And then as a result, when all six got back in the ring,
00:53:15the Powerbomb one, two, three, they are still the WCW.
00:53:20And I stress that, WCW, World Tag Team Champions.
00:53:23Still to come in this telecast, we are going to show you the footage
00:53:27from the contract signing, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Hollywood Hulk Hogan.
00:53:32Tell you what, Mike, today, and I've said this before,
00:53:35and I was at the very first Starrcade, 1983.
00:53:39But never before in the history of our sport
00:53:42has one match been so important in a Starrcade event
00:53:46than Rowdy Roddy Piper and Hulk Hogan.
00:53:48I mean, there is an event out there on December 29
00:53:51that one match can carry the whole thing.
00:53:53Well, you're right.
00:53:54The entire focus of Starrcade is on that match of the decade
00:53:58involving Hogan and Piper.
00:54:00And wait till you see the footage of the contract signing and everything
00:54:04that went along with it last night in Norfolk.

00:54:08Let's put it this way, all Hogan had to do was sign that contract,
00:54:11get in that ring and wrestle him and fight him, and it would be easier.

00:54:58and get behind world championship wrestling.
00:55:00That's just what I want to do if I was Sting.
00:55:02Listen to a grown man that wears earmuffs, got two different colored shoes on,
00:55:06a collar around his neck, and barks.
00:55:09Well, you can say what you want to about him, Brain.
00:55:11He's a tremendous athlete and a tremendous wrestler.
00:55:14He's a great wrestler, no doubt about that.
00:55:16He's held a lot of titles, and he knows what to do in that ring.
00:55:18But would you let him do your taxes?
00:55:20No, and of course, neither would I want him to do my taxes.
00:55:24I wouldn't ask him to.
00:55:25Reversal in the corner, but as tough as Rick Steiner is,
00:55:28as tough as the great athlete, like a Big Bubba,
00:55:31like a Rick Steiner in this sport, you can't go in against a gang.
00:55:36And that's exactly what the NWO, that's exactly
00:55:40where the strength of the NWO lies, in that they are unified and they are a gang.
00:55:45One man cannot take them all out.
00:55:47And speaking of that gang mentality, seeing Big Bubba,
00:55:50I have to reflect back on the Dungeon of Doom.
00:55:52They're attacked first Saturday night in Baltimore against Chris Benoit.

00:55:59that Dungeon of Doom four horsemen rivalry really intensified.

01:02:28I mean, he did everything in that match
01:02:30a man could do to win it.
01:02:33So a little show of force out here
01:02:34by Sonny Ono and the Ultimo Dragon.
