00:00:00was honored in Florence, Alabama. Brent Jones became a Hall of Famer. Yes, folks,
00:00:07the Division 2 Hall of Fame honored Brent Jones. He played at Santa Clara and
00:00:15this is what he had to say. Division 2, we play for the love of the game. There's
00:00:20intensity, there's a passion for the game, and we also like to thank at Division 2
00:00:25we're just a little bit smarter than those other guys because we have a thing
00:00:28called the playoffs, and they haven't figured it out yet, so yeah.
00:00:37Partner, congratulations. Who would have thought that a guy out of Santa Clara of
00:00:41all places, they no longer even have a football team, would make it into the
00:00:45Division 2 Hall of Fame. Yeah, it was really a tremendous honor and it was
00:00:48great. They did a great, had a great setup down there in Alabama. Got a lot of
00:00:51friends now in Alabama, National Guard, all kinds of guys. It was a great program
00:00:54and it was an honor. I got to really quickly mention the guys that went in with Greg
00:00:57Lloyd, Ken O'Brien, a couple of great pros. Okay, so now we turn back to the game, the
00:01:02most important stuff, and let's take a look at these statistics from the first
00:01:06half of play. Brent, take us through them. Well, I think the important thing has
00:01:10been the way that New England responded to the Tom Brady interception. Of course,
00:01:15things weren't going their way and then all of a sudden came back, answer with
00:01:18their own drive, and I think the stats, nothing really stands out. I think the
00:01:22rushing yards for both teams have been down, but really the score and I think
00:01:26of the Patriots have really shown that tough mental attitude that they've had
00:01:30this this whole season, and I continue to be impressed, Gus, as many games that
00:01:34we've had with Tom Brady, his composure, and his tremendous accuracy putting the
00:01:40ball where it needs to be. New England has the ball to start the
00:01:44second half of play. Here's Falk from the 16-yard line and Falk is
00:01:51stood up at the 30 and taken down at the 33. So here comes Tom Brady back on to
00:01:58the field. What a great drive at the end of the first half of play. A minute and
00:02:0316 seconds, he completes five passes and gets New England set up for a 38-yard
00:02:10out-of-finitary field goal. And all those passes are right on the numbers. He's not
00:02:15laying out his guys, he's not putting it behind him so they have to stop. They're
00:02:18all in front of the receivers, they can actually do something with the ball, hits
00:02:22him in stride, and not only has his arm gotten stronger this last year, but boy
00:02:26his accuracy is very impressive. First down and 10 on the play fake play, Brady
00:02:30down the sideline. It is broken up. Cory Fuller looking for a second interception of the game, and he breaks it up.
00:02:41Patrick Bass, the intended receiver. So let's take a look at the quarterback's
00:02:47comparison. And you see what really stands out, that second interception, Tim
00:02:52Couch, and we saw him complain about it. Terrell Buckley fighting off Kevin
00:02:57Johnson coming across there and thought it could have been pass interference, but
00:03:00that's really been the difference. Tim Couch has spread the ball around as well,
00:03:03but hasn't been able to get the ball downfield as much. Second down, 10 at 32.
00:03:09Brady, quick strike off with the catch, nowhere to go. He stopped at the 33, Dwayne
00:03:16Rudd with the tackle, read the play perfectly. We showed you this one earlier
00:03:23today, and he is trying to go after his fifth straight game in which he's
00:03:28completed 70% or higher of his past. And he would move into company with the
00:03:34greatest player of all time in NFL history, according to me, not you,
00:03:39according to you, Joe Montana. I would say he's the second greatest player behind
00:03:44Jim Brown. You know, you're just saying that because we're going into Cleveland.
00:03:48Brady, pumping, gets it off, and it's picked off.
00:03:55Earl Little, and Little still running. And he is down at the 37th second interception
00:04:03of the day for Brady, and all of a sudden, Cleveland in great shape, deep in
00:04:08New England territory. Now that's something that we haven't seen all year
00:04:12from Tom Brady, trying to make that throw, falling down. That's a
00:04:17mental mistake. Tom knows better than that, and you're gonna watch him step up
00:04:21in the pocket, and when you're getting pressure and you're going down, you don't
00:04:25want to just let that ball go. Greg Spires, former Patriot, getting the
00:04:29pressure, and Tom Brady just doesn't want to throw that ball. Little, right to
00:04:34him, no receiver around, and watch the pressure by Spires, and Tom Brady
00:04:38throwing the ball, both his feet actually, off the ground, going down. He hasn't
00:04:42really made that play all year.
00:04:46At the 37th.
00:04:50Couch underneath, Jackson with the catch, out of the backfield, and he gets popped. Stuck at the 31, Roman
00:04:59Phippen, Bobby Hamilton. Jackson getting up. Sometimes when you get those
00:05:08sandwich shots, the defensive guys hurt themselves more than they hurt you, and I
00:05:12think that might have been the case there with Jackson. But this is what the
00:05:15Browns have done all year. They've kept themselves in the game into the second
00:05:19half, they've relied on their defense, they've had 25 interceptions coming into
00:05:23the game, two more today, and then they've capitalized on it. Second down four, at the 31.
00:05:30Patriots showing blitz, Jackson taken down at the 29.
00:05:38Laurier-Malloy in on the play. So the Browns third in the NFL, in taking the
00:05:46ball away, the turnover ratio, the all-important category in the National
00:05:51Football League, the Jets plus 20. Tampa, that plus 14.
00:05:57That's where really Cleveland has upgraded their team this year. Butch Davis on the defensive side of the ball,
00:06:02really making something happen, very opportunistic. Third down two at the 29.
00:06:07White in motion out of the backfield, lines up, and a slot underneath. It's caught, Kevin Johnson with the first down at the 25, make it the 26, Mike
00:06:20Crabill with the tackle. And it goes back once again to having that third and
00:06:25short, get six, seven yards on first down, a couple on second down, and that's almost
00:06:29indefensible on third and short, especially if you're going to play that
00:06:32soft zone coverage. Kevin Johnson's going to find a hole, and Tim Couch is going to
00:06:35find Kevin Johnson. Johnson, five catches, 49 yards, first down, at the New England, 25.
00:06:53Couch, steps up, Couch throwing, broken up.
00:07:01Oda Smith was there, Dennis Northcutt, the intended receiver, and that ball hung in
00:07:07the air a little too long. And that's exactly right, Tim Couch actually wanted
00:07:10to put more air on that and lead Northcutt away. Actually, Northcutt does a
00:07:15nice job of coming back to the ball and breaking it up, because that initially
00:07:18looked like an interception for Oda Smith. You see Tim Couch actually letting
00:07:22that ball float up there. He wanted to throw it more in this type of an angle
00:07:25and let Northcutt run to the ball. They just hung it up there, lucky that wasn't
00:07:30intercepted. Makes it second down, 10, at the 25. Two receivers split to the top of
00:07:37your screen. Northcutt is in the slot.
00:07:43Here's Couch, underneath, White with the catch, cradles it at the 20-yard line.
00:07:51Right in front of Roman Phyfe, so that'll bring up third down, five at the 20.
00:07:58They'll need to go to the 15 for a first down. Well, you know who you look for in
00:08:03third and five, Kevin Johnson. Now, the Patriots, and I know it, they've got to
00:08:07know it. And what you really want to do against Kevin Johnson, get a jam on him
00:08:11off the line, upset his timing right now on third down, and have a safety over the
00:08:15top. A lot of teams give him some cushion, and when he has room to operate, he's
00:08:19gonna find the hole, he's gonna get a first down. Here's Kevin at the bottom of
00:08:23your screen, lines up.
00:08:26Ty Law checking him. Couch looking in trouble, dumps it, out of bounds. A lot of pressure coming from the
00:08:35backside. Terrell Buckley, Richard Seymour getting close to Tim Couch, and here
00:08:41comes the field goal unit. And they're lucky, because Kevin Johnson's gonna get
00:08:44open coming across the middle. There was nobody there. Somebody missed their zone.
00:08:48Here comes Seymour and Buckley, getting the pressure, forcing Tim Couch out of
00:08:51the pocket, because if he had time to set his feet and look back across the field,
00:08:55Kevin Johnson, once again, was wide open. So Phil Dawson already good today, from
00:09:0027, into attempt, a 39-yarder. Chris Gardocki, the holder, gets it down, it's up, and good.
00:09:10Barely. 10.45 to go. Third quarter of play, which Davis continues to keep his team
00:09:18motivated. This telecast is copyrighted by the NFL for the private use of our
00:09:23audience. Any other use of this telecast, or of any pictures, descriptions, or
00:09:26accounts of the game, without the NFL's consent, is prohibited.
00:09:30Foxborough Stadium, where the New England Patriots call home, and they lead the
00:09:36Cleveland Browns. I'm Gus Johnson, along with Brent Jones. Our score, 20 to 13.
00:09:41Patriots on top of the Browns, but they get a field goal, Cleveland does, and now
00:09:46they send it away, and this will be Falk camping under it, at the 13. Here's Falk,
00:09:52running, and spins down at the 31. So here comes Tom Brady, once again, for the
00:10:00Patriots. 20 to 13, the score.

00:11:04Every Saturday, I get together and play football with the guys, but this Saturday,
00:11:09I had to take a timeout. Hey, Steve, you okay? It's my throat, it's all dry.
00:11:15Hey, mine, too. I think I got just what you guys need. Come on.
00:11:19It was a good thing Brad was there. He explained that we were thirsty, and he gave us ice-cold
00:11:24Bud Lights. He told us that by drinking the Bud Light, the parched feeling would go away.
00:11:28You know what? He was right.
00:11:30For the great taste that won't fill you up and never let you down, make it a Bud Light.
00:11:36The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Nike.
00:11:41Remington Microscreen 3 TCT Shaver. A totally close shave, even on the tough spots.
00:11:47And by Bud Light. For the great taste that won't fill you up and never let you down,
00:11:52make it a Bud Light.
00:11:57A great Christmas feeling here in New England with the snow coming down. They're unloading
00:12:02the trees, and the kids will be looking forward to great presents. The first night of Hanukkah
00:12:08as well. And the Patriots are hoping that a playoff berth is under their Christmas tree.
00:12:16Here's Antoine Smith. Gets his shoulder square, and down at the 42.
00:12:23You know about the shoulder square thing, right? You're familiar with the shoulder square thing.
00:12:27Running back in Little League. Yeah, and you're better than that. Don't short sell yourself.
00:12:31Watch this. He's going to bounce it outside, then get those shoulders square. There you go, Gus.
00:12:35Pound it up inside. Because you can only move north and south if your shoulders are square, right?
00:12:39That's right. So, second down and one.
00:12:43Here's the option. Brady goes down, and Brady looking like the Heisman Trophy winner there,
00:12:57or trying to, Eric Crouch. Yeah, and I hope that's a broken play, because I don't know if you want
00:13:02Brady carrying the ball right now on the option. Little reverse pivot. There's the fake inside.
00:13:07Okay, if you're going to run the option, tell him to pitch it no matter what. You don't want your
00:13:11quarterback getting whacked up inside there. Took a couple of shots last week. Actually ran the
00:13:17little fake sweep for the big first down in the Jets game that iced the game.
00:13:21Third down and one. Inside handoff. Edwards will not get there.
00:13:27He needed to get outside, rather, the 40-yard line to the 41.
00:13:35I wonder if Mark Edwards took a shot in his face mask.
00:13:40And what stops those third and ones from being successful is penetration. I saw Wally Rayner up inside.
00:13:46Penetration on this side of the line. There's the key. Big tackle. There's a face mask.
00:13:52That's about as obvious as it gets in the short yardage situation.
00:13:56Devin Bush getting away with a big one.
00:14:00Walter sends it away. Beautiful spiral and kick. Northcutt catches it at the 12.
00:14:07And Northcutt taken down at the 17.
00:14:12Patrick Bass with the special team's tackle. A flag on the play.
00:14:20And holding the call against the Browns.
00:14:30I guess if it's a post-possession foul, then the Browns are just going to be penalized from that spot.
00:14:34If it was prior to the kick, though, it would be a first down. They don't usually call that. It's usually after the kick.
00:14:39So the Browns would just be backed up.
00:14:43And I think that's what we're going to see right here.
00:14:48Coach Davis not happy about any penalties.
00:14:51Holding. 47. Return team. During the kick. Half the distance. First down.
00:14:57Scott Frost. 8.49 to play. We've got a seven-point game here in New England.
00:15:07Following the game, log on to NFL.com and get the latest information on how the playoff picture is shaping up,
00:15:13as well as analysis from the experts. It's all at NFL.com or America Online Keyword, NFL.com.
00:15:20First down and 10 for the Browns. Backed up at their own 7.
00:15:26Jackson. No running room up at the middle. Brandon Mitchell there to catch him.
00:15:33Tonight, after 60 Minutes, when Professor Max Vickford asks his daughter to rewrite the school song, you won't believe what he hears.
00:15:47Academy Award winner Richard Dreyfuss stars in an all-new education of Max Vickford tonight, after 60 Minutes.
00:15:55Second down, 10. At the 7-yard line, 26 passes today for the Browns.
00:16:07And New England wants a timeout.
00:16:11The defense was not set for the Patriots. Timeout on the field.
00:16:16Wow. MP3 player? Digital camera? DVD player? Very nice. Looks like some of these kids are going to be very happy this holiday.
00:16:28Kids! Could you ... I'll be right ...

00:18:00And by A Diamond Is Forever.
00:18:02Show her how much you love her this Christmas.
00:18:10Aaron Shea is out of the game with a shoulder injury.
00:18:14And with 8.07 to play in the third, New England leads 20-13.
00:18:18Shea plays for Cleveland.
00:18:20And he plays that fullback H-back spot, and they don't really have anybody to back him up.
00:18:24Mike Sellers, some off-the-field problems.
00:18:26They released him here a couple weeks ago.
00:18:27And so they've been going with mostly a single back today.
00:18:30That can account for all those passes that you talked about.
00:18:33Second and ten at the seven.
00:18:39Couch.
00:18:40In trouble.
00:18:41Couch.
00:18:42And he is dropped at the one.
00:18:44Richard Seymour.
00:18:46Third sack of the day for the Patriots.
00:18:50And they are bringing the heat.
00:18:52And Tim Couch did a nice job just to spin forward, and we said at the top of the program,
00:18:56watch out for Richard Seymour, number 93.
00:19:00Right over center, Dave Wollobal.
00:19:02Look at that pressure, and he continues to move the pile back,
00:19:05even getting double-teamed and just missed the safety.
00:19:09Seymour, 6-6, 3-0-5.
00:19:11Been all over the backfield today of this Cleveland Browns offense.
00:19:15Also made a big play on that punt return.
00:19:17Third down, 16 at their own one.
00:19:20They need to go to the 17 for a first down.
00:19:25Couch out of the back of his own end zone.
00:19:27Rolling out of the pocket.
00:19:29Starts to run and gets out of bounds.
00:19:32Chopped down by Bruschi at the ten.
00:19:38Well, you saw Teddy Bruschi take a shot.
00:19:40Tim Couch is a little slow getting out of bounds.
00:19:43The fans here yelling, Bruce!
00:19:46And Bruschi, tough, hard-nosed linebacker, going ahead and diving
00:19:50and saying if you're not going to step out of bounds, Tim, I'll help you out.
00:19:53Still good hit.
00:19:58Chris Gardocki, his third punt of the game.
00:20:02Five yards deep in his own end zone.
00:20:05Troy Brown, Kevin Faulk back.
00:20:07Brown has already returned 185 yards.
00:20:10Kevin Faulk will get a chance.
00:20:12And he gets inside Cleveland territory.
00:20:14Stopped at the 47.
00:20:18Flag on the play.
00:20:23Illinois Jones with the special team's tackle.
00:20:30And it will go against New England.
00:20:43Illegal block in the back from behind number 35 on the return team
00:20:48during the return.
00:20:50Ten yards, first down.
00:20:52Patrick pass.
00:20:54Now here's a question.
00:20:56Which of these bubble teams has the best chance to make the playoffs?
00:20:59Atlanta, Cleveland, Denver, New Orleans, the Giants or Seattle?
00:21:03Just log on and cast your vote at NFL.com.
00:21:06Aren't you going to ask me?
00:21:07No.
00:21:08Come on!
00:21:09Because I know who you're going to say.
00:21:10No, no, no, no.
00:21:11I'm picking the Saints.
00:21:12Really?
00:21:13Yep.
00:21:14Hmm, interesting.
00:21:15See, you thought I was going to say the Browns.
00:21:17First and ten from the 44.
00:21:19You're a homer.
00:21:22Here's Brady to the sideline.
00:21:25Nice catch.
00:21:26Terry Glenn.
00:21:27And Terry Glenn gets out of bounds.
00:21:30I'll tell you what.
00:21:32He may be kind of crazy off the field,
00:21:34but this guy can really play the game of football.
00:21:36Yes, he can.
00:21:37And when he's focused, he can really scare defenses out there.
00:21:40And Tom Brady, what a nice weapon to add to the arsenal on the comeback route.
00:21:44They're giving him cushion again.
00:21:46He hasn't gone on the deep fly route.
00:21:48Look at that job.
00:21:49Delivering the ball to the spot.
00:21:51Terry Glenn coming back to the ball.
00:21:53He just changes the way that teams have to defense this New England offense.
00:21:57They've got to account for him.
00:21:58Three catches, 55 yards.
00:22:01Brady looking.
00:22:04Once again throws a strike to Terry Glenn.
00:22:07First down.
00:22:10A 12-yard gain.
00:22:12And you just wonder if they're getting the Browns frustrated enough to start
00:22:16playing a little tighter coverage on Terry Glenn.
00:22:18This time he's going to run the square out.
00:22:20Watch him coming out of his break.
00:22:22Looks like he's been playing the whole time.
00:22:24Nice job of making it square coming out.
00:22:28And a nice job today, Robinson Randall on Jameer Miller.
00:22:32We haven't mentioned Miller's name a whole lot today.
00:22:34And you see the chip right there coming out with the help from Big Joe Andrews.
00:22:38Here's the reverse.
00:22:40They run it to Patton with a block.
00:22:43And Patton is down inside the 15.
00:22:47Dropped on the play by Devin Bush, but it's a gain of eight.
00:22:52And how about Tom Brady taking a play out of Brett Favre's playbook.
00:22:56Getting the reverse, getting downfield.
00:22:59Leading David Patton.
00:23:02Keep your eyes on Tom Brady.
00:23:04He's coming back.
00:23:05He's coming into your screen.
00:23:07Looking to cut block right there on Earl Little.
00:23:10You don't want a quarterback knocking you on the ground.
00:23:13Second down, three.
00:23:15At the 14.
00:23:21Antoine Smith, and he's dropped from the loss.
00:23:24Nicely done.
00:23:25Jameer Miller coming up and making the play.
00:23:29And he'll lose two on the play.
00:23:31And he heard us say we haven't called his name a lot, and here he comes again.
00:23:35Coming down inside.
00:23:36Quickness of Jameer Miller has been a big part of this Cleveland Browns defense this year.
00:23:40Penetration kills the run game.
00:23:43And Jameer Miller making some things happen.
00:23:45And it's tough today because he is the focal point of this New England offense.
00:23:49Hey, chip him, double him.
00:23:50Courtney Brown's not in the lineup.
00:23:52Keith McKenzie's out for the season.
00:23:54Third and five.
00:23:55He has eight sacks on the year.
00:23:57At the 16-yard line, Tom Brady straight drop back.
00:24:02Steps up and goes down.
00:24:04And that time it's Warren coming in and making the sack.
00:24:09His first of the day.
00:24:12And New England will bring on Adam Vinatieri once again.
00:24:17It's been perfect today.
00:24:18And watch Gerard Roy right here.
00:24:20Left defensive tackle.
00:24:21He's done a great job this year of collapsing the pocket.
00:24:24Had his best game of the season last week.
00:24:26Eight tackles.
00:24:27Quarterback pressures.
00:24:29He really needs to step up.
00:24:30He's had a solid season.
00:24:31He can be a force out there.
00:24:33Just got to have more consistency.
00:24:35Adam Vinatieri, good for 54 and 38 yards.
00:24:38This one's for 39.
00:24:40And he pushed it wide right.
00:24:43So the Browns dodge a bullet.
00:24:484-18 to play in the third quarter of play.
00:24:51And the Patriots lead it 20-13.
00:24:54But Butch Davis will take the miss.
00:25:0020-13.
00:25:024-18 to go in the third quarter of play.
00:25:05The Cleveland defense holds.
00:25:07And they take over first down and ten at their own 29.
00:25:14Slay action couch.
00:25:16Looking.
00:25:17Goes up top for north front incomplete.
00:25:20Otis Smith was right there.
00:25:24Good coverage for the Patriots.
00:25:27And another look at the playoff picture.
00:25:29Why this game is so important.
00:25:30Cleveland and Seattle both at six and five.
00:25:33If the playoffs began today, remember, six teams go.
00:25:36The division winners go automatically.
00:25:39Baltimore, the Jets, and New England would be in.
00:25:43Cleveland would be outside looking in.
00:25:46And remember, head-to-head matchup is the first tiebreaker.
00:25:49That's why this game is so important for these two teams today
00:25:52because it's going to be a tremendous advantage for the winner of this game.
00:25:56Second and ten at the 29.
00:26:02Inside handoff Jackson.
00:26:04Breaks it back in and gets to the 31, maybe the 32.
00:26:08Mike Grable dragging him down from behind.
00:26:11Coming next, the doubleheader action continues here on CBS Sports
00:26:14when Vinnie and the Jets try to bounce back against Cordell Stewart
00:26:18and the AFC dominant Pittsburgh Steelers.
00:26:22Or the Chiefs battle the AFC West leading Oakland Raiders.
00:26:26Check local listings.
00:26:31Third down eight from the 31.
00:26:34Cleveland needs to go to the 39 for a first down.
00:26:39They're five of ten on third down conversion.
00:26:41Here's Couch looking up top.
00:26:43Incomplete.
00:26:46Kevin Johnson broke to the sideline.
00:26:48Couch thought he was going down the field
00:26:51but the Browns have to punt it away.
00:26:53And when it's third and long, we talked about that all day,
00:26:56Cleveland hasn't been in that situation a lot.
00:26:58You know the Patriots are going to blitz.
00:27:00Loyer-Malloy, Anthony Pleasant, everybody was putting pressure on Tim Couch's face.
00:27:04Like you said, a little miscommunication out there.
00:27:06He's got to throw that ball up to avoid the sacks.
00:27:11Brown back deep.
00:27:14This one sent away by Gardocki.
00:27:17Brown catches it inside the 30.
00:27:22It goes down at the 37.
00:27:25Smith with the tackle.
00:27:2741-yard punt, eight-yard return.
00:27:29We talked about the AFC.
00:27:30Let's take a look at the NFC, the division leaders, Philly, Chicago,
00:27:35St. Louis, and San Francisco tied right now.
00:27:38However, they're playing each other today, and St. Louis is beating San Francisco.
00:27:43Wild cards, Green Bay at 8-3, Tampa, New Orleans, and Atlanta.
00:27:50So who's your pick from the NFC this year to represent in the Super Bowl?
00:27:54I like the Rams.
00:27:56Still like the Rams.
00:27:57Way to go out on a limb.
00:27:59You asked me.
00:28:00I'm just telling you.
00:28:01Okay.
00:28:02I thought you were going to give me a surprise pick or a super insightful one.
00:28:06But you're right.
00:28:07I think the Rams are going to be the best.
00:28:10I'm just messing with you.
00:28:11I know you are.
00:28:12You mess with me every day.
00:28:15St. Louis leading in the fourth quarter right now against San Francisco,
00:28:2024-7 with 13.5 left.
00:28:23First and ten at the 37 inside handoff.
00:28:26Edwards dragged down from behind, and Edwards is taken down by Mark Smith.
00:28:37He knows Cleveland uniforms, very good-looking uniforms,
00:28:43and that's the guy that takes care of them.
00:28:45He's the equipment manager, Bobby Monica.
00:28:47The best equipment manager in the National Football League,
00:28:50and they know they've got a great one there in Cleveland.
00:28:52Keeps these guys looking good all the time.
00:28:55From Madison, New Jersey, his father was a Hall of Fame football coach in New Jersey.
00:29:01Here's Brady underneath, and it's caught.
00:29:04Brown at the 45, a 17-yard pickup.
00:29:15Watch David Patton right here run the clear route
00:29:18and watch Troy Brown come underneath.
00:29:21There's David Patton running the clear, taking two with him.
00:29:25Troy Brown breaking underneath on a dagger route,
00:29:28and that's what happens when you have speed outside.
00:29:31And now Troy Brown has gone over the 1,000-yard mark the first time in his career.
00:29:37First and ten at the 45.
00:29:40Brady dumps it incomplete.
00:29:44He was under pressure.
00:29:49Going back to Troy Brown, this little receiver, a sixth-round pick out of Marshall.
00:29:55Didn't make that an eighth-round pick in 1993 out of Marshall.
00:30:00He was lucky to make the team, and he's found a home and has become a star here in New England.
00:30:06And I'm voting for Troy Brown for the Pro Bowl this year because he's been phenomenal,
00:30:10and I just love the way he plays.
00:30:12He's such a hard worker, does a great job finding the ball, sure-handed, great leader, big play, wide receiver.
00:30:20Antoine Smith on the play fake.
00:30:22Brady underneath, caught by Brown again.
00:30:27This time an 18-yard gain.
00:30:32And, Gus, that's what play action does for you.
00:30:34You have Antoine Smith, you're able to run the ball.
00:30:37All of a sudden, linebackers, safeties, they start sucking up for the run,
00:30:41and you have a good play action game.
00:30:43Watch these linebackers bite on the play action.
00:30:45Here comes Wally Rayner.
00:30:46Run, run, run.
00:30:47And that opens up the zone deep behind the linebackers where they should be dropping on the pass.
00:30:52That is so important, and that's what Antoine Smith has brought to this team.
00:30:56Tom Brady, nice job this year on his ball handling and faking skills.
00:31:01First down at the Cleveland 27.
00:31:05Here's the pitch to Smith, and Smith spins.
00:31:09And it's dragged down at the 25 by Devin Bush.
00:31:13Good job by Bush holding on.
00:31:16A two-yard pickup.
00:31:23Now, don't miss an amazing Thursday on CBS beginning with an all-new survivor.
00:31:28Who will be the next one voted off?
00:31:30Then it's the incredible finale of the amazing race.
00:31:33Find out who will win the million-dollar prize followed by an all-new CSI.
00:31:37It's all here.
00:31:38Amazing Thursday on CBS.
00:31:40And if you keep messing with me, you're going to be voted out of this booth.
00:31:44It's going to be nice.
00:31:46Second down and nine at the 25.
00:31:51Brady, short drop underneath.
00:31:53It's caught.
00:31:54Carl Johnson.
00:31:56Johnson down at the 19, still on the field.
00:32:03Shaken up, Earl Little with the tackle.
00:32:07Big shot by Dwayne Rudd.
00:32:09And I almost think, Gus, that was a fumble.
00:32:11They called it incomplete, and the whistle blew.
00:32:14But if you have possession and take two steps, that is a legal catch.
00:32:18You see Charles Johnson still on the ground.
00:32:20Dwayne Rudd delivered a huge blow, and you saw that ball on the ground.
00:32:24That's what Butch Davis is saying right now.
00:32:26Fumble.
00:32:27It was a fumble.
00:32:29A catch, Gus.
00:32:30Possession in two steps.
00:32:31One, two, bang.
00:32:34Ball out.
00:32:35Fumble.
00:32:36Now, the key is, was he juggling the ball from our angle?
00:32:39It's tough to tell.
00:32:41And so, the call on the field was incomplete.
00:32:43But it sure looked like a fumble to me.
00:32:45And that was a heck of a delivered blow by Dwayne Rudd.
00:32:58Charles Johnson in his eighth season out of Colorado.
00:33:03Released by the Eagles, and he signed with the Pats,
00:33:06former first-round pick in 94 by Pittsburgh.
00:33:10And, Gus, when you run that route, you call it a looky route.
00:33:12It's just everybody slanting in.
00:33:14Your back is to the defensive back of the linebacker,
00:33:18and you don't know what's coming.
00:33:20You see Charles Johnson look it in, and there's one step down, two.
00:33:24And the key is, and that ball is out.
00:33:26The key is, was he juggling it when that first step was down?
00:33:30Here he is.
00:33:31He's just going to run the looky route right here.
00:33:33Let's see if we can tell if that ball's in.
00:33:36Possession and two, one, two.
00:33:38And it looks like he was still juggling it, actually, from this angle.
00:33:41It looked like his arm was moving up and down.
00:33:44And he might not have had the complete possession of that ball,
00:33:48and so maybe he only had one step down with possession.
00:33:59And, Gus, I don't even know if that's challengeable,
00:34:01because once the whistle blows on an incomplete pass.
00:34:10And there's Charles Johnson, and that's just a tough shot to take.
00:34:15And that's part of going over the middle.
00:34:17And that's what you did for 11 years in the National Football League.
00:34:22And as Johnson has to be held to the sideline,
00:34:25that will make it third down nine at the Cleveland 26.
00:34:32Patriots three of nine on third down conversions today.
00:34:35J.R. Redman lines up in the backfield.
00:34:40Brady.
00:34:42And Brady ambushed at the 30.
00:34:45Jameer Miller with his ninth sack of the season.
00:34:51And you've got to count for Jameer Miller.
00:34:53We said at the top of the show he was going to be important,
00:34:55and we said we hadn't called his name a lot.
00:34:57But here he is versus Rod Rutledge, and that's a huge mismatch.
00:35:00You cannot have a tight end block Jameer Miller man for man.
00:35:04Nothing against Rod Rutledge, but there's no tight end that can do that.
00:35:07And Jameel Miller sees that, and he says,
00:35:09if it's not a three-step drop and that ball's gone,
00:35:12I'm going to sack the quarterback, and that's exactly what he did.
00:35:15So that will take us to the end of the third quarter of play.
00:35:21But hold on.
00:35:25A timeout has been called.
00:35:30And it is a 30-second timeout.
00:35:33And you know why they call that timeout, Gus?
00:35:35Because the wind is blowing the opposite way.
00:35:37They want Adam Vinatieri to kick into the wind.
00:35:40Makes it a tougher field goal.
00:35:42He missed his last one.
00:35:43If they switch sides, he's got the wind at his back.
00:35:45One second left in the quarter,
00:35:47and that's exactly what the reason they called that timeout.
00:35:55But if you look at the top of the stadium here in Foxboro,
00:35:58the wind is actually blowing right into the face of Adam Vinatieri.
00:36:07I thought Cleveland was signaling timeout.
00:36:11There would be no reason that New England would take that timeout.
00:36:22And there are your flags, and they are blowing right at Adam Vinatieri.
00:36:28Cleveland calling the timeout.
00:36:33So, 48-yarder.
00:36:37Coming up, good for 54 and 38.
00:36:40He missed a 39-yarder.
00:36:42This one from 48 yards.
00:36:47High snap to get it down.
00:36:48It's up and no good.
00:36:52The strategy pays off for Butch Davis and the Browns.
00:36:57They force him to kick into the wind.
00:37:00At the end of the third quarter, our score is 20-13,
00:37:05and Cleveland will get the football back.
00:37:09We'll return to Foxboro Stadium right after this word from your local station.
00:37:17Adam Vinatieri has missed two and made two,
00:37:21and our score as we head into the fourth quarter, 20-13.
00:37:27Cleveland taking over with the ball at their own 38.
00:37:32Down by seven.
00:37:39Bounce up the sideline for White.
00:37:42Makes the catch, and White goes down at the 27.
00:37:47It's a gain of 37.
00:37:49Matt Stephens with the tackle.
00:37:51That was all about Jamel White making adjustments while that ball was in the air.
00:37:56Making one-on-one coverage outside with Matt Stephens,
00:37:59and that's what Tim Couch saw and said,
00:38:01I'll take my running back versus safety any time you see White come back,
00:38:05stop and come back for that ball.
00:38:07Stephens kept going.
00:38:12Big play down the field for the Browns.
00:38:15Wow.
00:38:16The missed field goal and the big reception.
00:38:19Now they have it at the New England 26.
00:38:25Couch rolling, throws on the run, out of bounds.
00:38:29Intended for Quincy Morgan.
00:38:31That one sailed on him a bit.
00:38:33And you know why it sailed.
00:38:34It's tough when you roll out your opposite way,
00:38:36him rolling to his left, a right-handed quarterback,
00:38:38you can't set your feet and throw, and that affects your accuracy.
00:38:42And a look at the missed field goal as Vinatieri pushes it and just missed it.
00:38:53And you wonder if that win affected it.
00:38:55Just blowing it enough left, started off like it was going to be inside the post.
00:39:01Second down, 10 at the 26.
00:39:09Couch, short drop underneath, caught.
00:39:13And down inside the five is Kevin Johnson.
00:39:17Johnson with an unbelievable catch.
00:39:21And he was able to keep his balance long enough to get inside the New England five,
00:39:26a 22-yard pickup.
00:39:28And you know they're going to go to Kevin Johnson.
00:39:30They're giving him too big of a cushion.
00:39:32I can't believe they're giving him room to operate.
00:39:34You see him running the slant right there, just letting him off the ball.
00:39:38You've got to jam him, double him.
00:39:40He's the main guy you've got to stop when you're playing a Cleveland Browns.
00:39:44Seven catches, 75 yards, first and goal at the New England four.
00:39:50Jackson straight ahead.
00:39:52Jackson, maybe a yard.
00:39:55Bobby Hamilton with the tackle.
00:39:58And it is amazing how this Browns team has played this season.
00:40:01This is picture-perfect Cleveland Browns game.
00:40:04Get a couple of interceptions, have your defense bend but not break,
00:40:08force teams to kick field goals.
00:40:10Adam Vinatieri misses a couple field goals.
00:40:12And you're into the fourth quarter on the road, and you're seven points down.
00:40:16And your big wide receiver, Kevin Johnson, coming up with big plays.
00:40:19Second down goal at the four.
00:40:23Three receiver package.
00:40:26Jackson the lone setback.
00:40:28Here's Couch looking underneath incomplete.
00:40:32Couch lucky to get that ball off.
00:40:35He was under all kinds of pressure.
00:40:37Bruschi was there.
00:40:39Also Roman Pfeiffer.
00:40:43I think they blitzed all their linebackers.
00:40:45Bruschi, Pfeiffer, and Frabel, they're all coming on the blitz.
00:40:50And Tim Couch had to get that ball away right now,
00:40:52or it was going to be a big sack.
00:40:54A lot of pressure inside.
00:40:56And the Patriots are going to do that again.
00:40:58The best response, get the ball on the flat route to your running back.
00:41:02Third down goal from the four.
00:41:05James Jackson is the running back lined up to Couch's left.
00:41:10Santiago goes in motion.
00:41:13Rolling, throwing on the run, incomplete.
00:41:17Dennis Northcutt had it, but bobbled it out of bounds.
00:41:21And that's a classic situation of running without the ball.
00:41:24Northcutt knew he needed to get into the end zone,
00:41:26and so he turned his head away from looking the ball in,
00:41:29trying to get those yards.
00:41:30I don't think he was going to get it anyway.
00:41:32But you're going to see him start to get the ball up,
00:41:34and he's eyes going upfield, takes the shot anyway.
00:41:39But they would have had it down to the two or three-yard line.
00:41:41Now it's not even a question.
00:41:42They've got to go for the field goal.
00:41:46So Phil Dawson in to attempt a 22-yarder.
00:41:52It's up and good.
00:41:55Dawson, three for three on the afternoon, 12.39 to play.
00:42:002016 Patriots.
00:42:03♪♪
00:42:1020-16 the score.
00:42:11The Patriots lead the Cleveland Browns here with 12.39 to play.
00:42:16And Dawson's 22-yard field goal came on a seventh play,
00:42:2158-yard drive.
00:42:22The sun has started to come out here at Foxboro Stadium.
00:42:28Another sellout crowd in attendance.
00:42:34And Cleveland ready to send it away.
00:42:36Here we go.
00:42:39Fox from the 24.
00:42:44Goes backwards after crossing the 30.
00:42:47It's a nine-yard gain.
00:42:52Gus Johnson along with Brent Jones, competitive game so far.
00:42:54Yeah, it is.
00:42:55And I think when you talk about competitive,
00:42:56that really talks about the Cleveland Browns and their mentality.
00:42:59I think Bush Davis has done such a great job.
00:43:01And they've hung around.
00:43:02They've battled.
00:43:03Not the most phenomenal output on offense or defense,
00:43:06but they haven't given up,
00:43:07and they've battled into the fourth quarter,
00:43:08and that's where they've been successful this year.
00:43:10What do you expect to see here in this fourth quarter of play?
00:43:13I expect the Patriots to go back to Tom Brady,
00:43:15let him answer the call.
00:43:17Terry Glenn maybe making another appearance in a deep route,
00:43:20maybe a double move scenario.
00:43:22And, hey, you've got Troy Brown.
00:43:24Keep getting him the ball.
00:43:25He's been successful all day.
00:43:26First and ten at the 33.
00:43:30David Patton in motion to the sideline.
00:43:34Patton with the catch.
00:43:35He draws forward, gets to the 44.
00:43:40David Patton going against his former team,
00:43:42and I think that Kevin Johnson would have hoped that David Patton
00:43:47would have stuck around in Cleveland and have some speed
00:43:49to take the pressure off of him.
00:43:51And that's been kind of a carousel,
00:43:53the second wide receiver for the Cleveland Browns since Patton's left.
00:43:56But Patton has been a great deep threat this year for the Patriots.
00:44:00Don't forget, game two of our doubleheader next.
00:44:03Most of you will see the Jets in Pittsburgh,
00:44:05others Kansas City and Oakland.
00:44:07First and ten at the 44.
00:44:10Here's the pitch to Antoine Smith with the hole.
00:44:13Smith tries to turn the corner.
00:44:15The stiff arm works, and he gets to the 49.
00:44:18Jameer Miller in on the play.
00:44:24Makes it second down and four as we take a look around the National Football League,
00:44:29week number 13, Philly leading San Diego at home.
00:44:36Jacksonville and Cincinnati, Jaguars losing a tough Monday night game to Green Bay.
00:44:41Minnesota winning at home big over Tennessee.
00:44:45Second down four at the 49.
00:44:53Draw play.
00:44:55Here's Smith, and he goes nowhere.
00:44:58Earl Little there, and Antoine Smith will lose a yard on the play.
00:45:07That was a big second down play.
00:45:08You don't say second down plays are really instrumental in the course of a game,
00:45:12but now we're at third and five,
00:45:14and this will be a crucial conversion possibility for this New England team.
00:45:19Gone to Troy Brown in these situations.
00:45:24Makes it third down six from the 48.
00:45:26They need to go to the Cleveland 46 for a first down.
00:45:31Here's Brady on the deep drop.
00:45:33Sets up.
00:45:34Looking.
00:45:35Brady's got to get rid of it.
00:45:37He doesn't, and he's taken down.
00:45:39Jameer Miller should be credited with a sack,
00:45:43and New England forced to punt it away.
00:45:46Second sack of the day for Miller.
00:45:49And Jameer Miller has showed up huge in this second half
00:45:52and watched Tom Brady pull the trigger and then hang on to the ball.
00:45:56Brings it back in, and there's Jameer Miller pushing, getting an arm on him.
00:45:59Brady falling forward.
00:46:02And it looks like a little confusion on the routes right there.
00:46:05Almost ran into each other, but Terry Glenn was wide open.
00:46:07I think that's where Brady was looking initially and then pulled it back.
00:46:10Ken Walter from the 33.
00:46:13Wobbly kicks.
00:46:15Fair caught at the 12.
00:46:18A 39-yard punt.
00:46:209.43 to play in the fourth quarter.
00:46:23Cleveland has it down by four.
00:46:27The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Honda.

00:46:43Staples has everything you need for your business at great low prices.
00:46:48Welcome back, 20-16.
00:46:50The score, 9.43 to go in the fourth.
00:46:53Jameer Miller coming up with a big second half.
00:46:56Two sacks.
00:46:58Has 10 on the season.
00:47:01Cleveland now at their own 14, first down and 10.
00:47:05Play-action count.
00:47:07Underneath, caught by White out of the backfield.
00:47:10Jamel White gets to the 31, a gain of 17.
00:47:15Shaw with the tackle.
00:47:18Little play-action here.
00:47:19Watch Jameel White hitting the seam.
00:47:21Tim Couch putting it right on the money, letting Jameel Wright run with the ball.
00:47:25Getting five extra yards after the catch.
00:47:28You see Mike Brable on the blitz.
00:47:29Couch getting rid of it just in time.
00:47:31And Jameel White coming up with a couple of huge catches down the line.
00:47:34And Bruce Arians, the offensive coordinator, sees something.
00:47:37He's starting to use his backs out of the backfield.
00:47:40As receivers, first to 10 at the 31.
00:47:46Couch over the middle.
00:47:48This time it is picked off.
00:47:51Bobbles, number 98, plus it.
00:47:55And he loses it.
00:47:57At the 35, a flag on the field.
00:48:03And I think the flag is going to be Brown's holding.
00:48:09And so the interception is going to stand.
00:48:11How about Anthony Pleasant downfield.
00:48:14Offense, penalties declined.
00:48:17First down.
00:48:18Quincy Morgan had it and dropped it right into the hands of Pleasant.
00:48:23And that's been the problem.
00:48:24Quincy Morgan's had trouble hanging on to the ball late.
00:48:26You look at Anthony Pleasant hustling downfield to make the tackle.
00:48:29He makes the interception, but he's carrying the ball like a loaf of bread.
00:48:33And that's one of the problems.
00:48:36And watch Roman Pfeiffer.
00:48:37Here's a guy that's been on a tear these last few weeks,
00:48:40getting held and pressure, crawling to Tim Couch.
00:48:44And Morgan's got to hang on to that ball.
00:48:46But Anthony Pleasant hustling downfield, getting the big interception.
00:48:51First down, 10 at the 35.
00:48:58Brady looking, going up top for Brown and complete.
00:49:05Brady pass is traded for Brown.
00:49:07Brown with the down, out, and up,
00:49:09and good defense on the part of the Browns.
00:49:15Charlie Weiss going to bunch formation after the turnover,
00:49:17trying to strike gold on the first play
00:49:20and certainly can't accuse the Patriots of being too conservative in this game, Gus.
00:49:25They've clearly gone to the pass, not as much Antoine Smith today.
00:49:28They've tried to attack the Browns through the air.
00:49:31They've had some success,
00:49:32although they've made a few mistakes as well that have led to a couple of Brown interceptions.
00:49:36Second and 10, Antoine Smith, power running, nowhere to go.
00:49:41Maybe a yard on the play.
00:49:45Wally Rayner in the middle, making the tackle.
00:49:498.33 and counting, this Cleveland team.
00:49:52They're without Courtney Brown.
00:49:54They're without Keith McKenzie.
00:49:56They're without Daylon McCutcheon.
00:49:58They're without Aaron Shea.
00:50:00And they continue to hang in this football game.
00:50:04And a lot of that's the attitude that comes from the head coach,
00:50:06and he, Butch Davis, has just, like we've said this whole year,
00:50:10has changed the thinking in Cleveland.
00:50:12These guys expect to win.
00:50:13They expect to be there at the end of the game.
00:50:16Scott Bronson now at safety, number 47.
00:50:20Third and 10 from the 35, Brady, under pressure again.
00:50:24Brady, flag on the play, incomplete.
00:50:29This should be a hold against New England.
00:50:35And I think, yes, that's a penalty.
00:50:38I think he'd go ahead and decline.
00:50:42Although we could see another attempted long field goal, 52 yards,
00:50:46but I think if you're the Browns.
00:50:47Holding, 77, offense, penalties declined, fourth down.
00:50:52Mike Compton.
00:50:53And they're going to bring Vinatieri back in to attempt a field goal.
00:50:56Well, this time we know he's got the win at his back.
00:50:58He kicked that 54-yarder in the first half,
00:51:01and watch Mike Compton who's been doing a good job today versus Gerard Warren,
00:51:04but he's going to go ahead and just tackle the big man
00:51:07because he's losing him right there.
00:51:12So the ball is spotted at the 43.
00:51:17So this will be a 53-yarder.
00:51:19He has a 54-yarder today.
00:51:21His career-long 55.
00:51:24They fake it and pooch it.
00:51:26They fake it and pooch it, and the ball is down.
00:51:30Did it get in the end zone?
00:51:32No.
00:51:34It will be downed at the 1.
00:51:38I think it's Jermaine Wiggin getting down, Gus.
00:51:41Going ahead and making a great effort keeping that ball from going in the end zone.
00:51:44Otherwise the quick kick would have backfired.
00:51:50A 42-yard punt.
00:51:53So we have a situation here, 20-16 the score.
00:51:59New England leads Cleveland, 745 to go in the fourth quarter.
00:52:03The ball was downed at the one-foot line,
00:52:06and the Browns have elected to challenge this play.
00:52:10And Jermaine Wiggins makes a huge play.
00:52:12Watch, his foot is not on the end line.
00:52:14If he touched the ball there and his foot was on the end line,
00:52:17it would have been a touchback.
00:52:19The ball didn't touch inside the end zone.
00:52:22Great play.
00:52:23The ball, Gus, is going to stay right there on the one-yard line.
00:52:26Not a bad challenge.
00:52:28Take a shot, and you're going to see a great angle of it here.
00:52:31Notice his foot inside the white line right there.
00:52:34Nice job of bouncing it back out.
00:52:37Jermaine Wiggins, huge play.
00:52:40Now the Browns have to go 99 big ones.
00:52:43Nice awareness of where your feet are on the field.
00:52:46Look, so many times you see players step on that line
00:52:49and then touch the ball.
00:52:50Well, that would be a touchback
00:52:52because you're in the end zone touching the ball.
00:52:58So the ruling on the field is that the ball is at the one,
00:53:01and the Browns are saying this should be a touchback.
00:53:04Not a bad challenge.
00:53:05You know, his feet were his foot,
00:53:07right foot was actually within two inches of touching the line.
00:53:09After reviewing the play, the player was not in the end zone.
00:53:13The ball was not in the end zone.
00:53:15The ball will be placed at the two-yard line.
00:53:18Cleveland will be charged a timeout.
00:53:23So Cleveland with only one timeout remaining.
00:53:26Yeah, now we said it was a good challenge,
00:53:28but in terms of times out,
00:53:29when you lose a timeout right there, that is crucial.
00:53:32Now, it would have been nice to have the ball in the 20,
00:53:34and what they were thinking was maybe his foot stepped on that line
00:53:38when he was touching the ball.
00:53:40But Jermaine Wiggins, nice job of balancing that tightrope,
00:53:44knowing where his feet are, and bouncing that ball back.
00:53:50Big special team play for this New England Patriots team.
00:53:54So the Browns have it.
00:53:58First down.
00:54:01And Gus, watch out for Richard Seymour and Roman Pfeiffer in this situation.
00:54:05They've been able to get a lot of penetration all day.
00:54:08Right now, they're thinking penetration may be an opportunity for a safety.
00:54:13So the ball's on about the one-and-a-half-yard line.
00:54:16And the fans in the end zone are really giving the Browns a hard time
00:54:21as they huddle up, everybody in the stadium on their feet.
00:54:25First down is ten, ball on the two.
00:54:32Monroe in motion.
00:54:35The handoff to Jackson, and he gets some running room.
00:54:38Up to the five, Teddy Bruschi pulls him down.
00:54:44So this is the New England version of the dog pound.
00:54:50And that'll make it second down and seven at the five.
00:54:54And it's so important to get two or three yards down there
00:54:56and get out of that end zone.
00:54:58It's just tough as a running back lining up back there,
00:55:01just saying, hey, if there's penetration, we can have a safety.
00:55:04Just gives you so much more breathing room, helps you mentally on the next play.
00:55:08Second down, seven.
00:55:14Couch, thrown to the sideline.
00:55:16Nice catch.
00:55:18And this is Dawson with the grab.
00:55:23And Dawson will be a couple of yards short.
00:55:25He gains three.
00:55:28Otis Smith closing on the play quickly.
00:55:31And that'll make it third down four at the eight-yard line.
00:55:35Huge difference between third and four and third and eight in this situation.
00:55:38You know the Patriots love to blitz off the corner.
00:55:41Three wide receivers.
00:55:42You know that they love bringing one of those guys,
00:55:44especially off the slot wide receivers.
00:55:48New England is not afraid to blitz those corners.
00:55:51Third down, four at the eight.
00:55:54They need to go to the 12.
00:55:58Couch, out of the shotgun, under pressure.
00:56:00Gets it away.
00:56:02And Otis Smith comes from the corner.
00:56:06And disrupts the passing play.
00:56:09And the Riles will have to send it away.
00:56:12And nobody blitzes their defensive backs better than the Patriots.
00:56:15Watch him coming.
00:56:16You saw him looking inside.
00:56:18Luckily, Tim Couch got rid of that ball.
00:56:20Because if he held it for one more step.
00:56:22Look it.
00:56:23Nobody sees Otis Smith.
00:56:24Free shot, quarterback back turn.
00:56:26Bang.
00:56:27Wow.
00:56:28That could have been a big fumble right there.
00:56:30Gardocki sends it away.
00:56:34Here's Brown at the 45, skipping.
00:56:38Gets into Cleveland territory.
00:56:40Turning the corner.
00:56:42And Troy Brown gets to the 36.
00:56:45A 48-yard punt and a 20-yard return.
00:56:49So with 6.04 to go in the fourth quarter of play.
00:56:57And another look at Otis Smith's hit.
00:57:00And you see how close that was to being a fumble.
00:57:03Just a half step earlier.
00:57:04And Tim Couch would have had that ball off.
00:57:06That was a shot by Otis Smith.
00:57:08And when you play the Patriots, you've got to be aware.
00:57:11The corners and safeties will come off those receivers in a heartbeat.
00:57:14They do a great job of coming over and covering for the blitzing defensive back.
00:57:18You've got to have your eyes on the swivel.
00:57:22Antoine Smith.
00:57:25And he's dragged down by Wally Rayner, the middle linebacker.
00:57:29Stays inbounds.
00:57:31Clock continues to run at 5.53 and counting.
00:57:35Cleveland has one timeout remaining.
00:57:37New England has two timeouts remaining.
00:57:41And if you're the Patriots, you're thinking,
00:57:42we've got to come away from this with this great position with at least three.
00:57:46We've got to put the pressure on the Browns to have to drive the length of the field just to tie it up.
00:57:52And so you're going to have to make another first down or two.
00:57:54Vinatieri has missed the last couple.
00:57:58Second and eight at the 34.
00:58:01The pitch to Smith.
00:58:04Sweeping around the left side.
00:58:06Breaks down the sideline.
00:58:08Antoine Smith out of bounds at the 15.
00:58:16An 18-yard run.
00:58:20Patriots have a lot of success this year running left.
00:58:23Watch Big Matt Light, number 72, clearing the way.
00:58:26Anthony Henry Bang, there's the hole.
00:58:28And there goes Antoine Smith.
00:58:30Nice job using the stiff arm, getting down the sideline for an extra five or six yards.
00:58:37Antoine Smith following Big Matt Light, and that's what you've got to do.
00:58:40Go back to your bread and butter.
00:58:42Run behind the rookie.
00:58:45First down and ten at the 16.
00:58:48Smith, the single setback.
00:58:51They give it to him straight ahead.
00:58:53And Smith, tackled by Rayner.
00:58:55Rayner.
00:58:584.48 to go.
00:59:00Bill Belichick will take it.
00:59:03Four minutes and 43 seconds to go here in the fourth quarter of play.
00:59:08Foxborough Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, who have won four of their last five games.
00:59:14And they are leading the Cleveland Browns 20-16.
00:59:18Gus Johnson, Brent Jones with you.
00:59:20Second down, seven.
00:59:24Second down and seven at the 13.
00:59:30Second down, seven at the 13 for the Patriots.
00:59:33Play action, Brady throws it underneath, and it's caught.
00:59:38Troy Brown with the catch, tackled by Wally Rayner.
00:59:42Foxborough Stadium, where the New England Patriots lead the Cleveland Browns 20-16.
00:59:48Gus Johnson and Brent Jones with you.
00:59:52And for those of you who have just joined us, these are the key statistics.
00:59:56Troy Brown with an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown.
01:00:02I guess one of the hallmarks of this Cleveland defense all year has been bend but don't break.
01:00:06They've got to hold New England to at least a field goal in this situation.
01:00:10Third down and one.
01:00:11The pinch.
01:00:12Smith getting outside, now cuts it back in.
01:00:16And gets to the five, but he picks up a first down.
01:00:21Antoine Smith has carried the ball 18 times for 59 yards.
01:00:27And what a huge first down that was, not only in terms of having four more plays,
01:00:31but in terms of moving the clock.
01:00:33Gus almost inside three minutes right now, and New England appears to be in the driver's seat.
01:00:38Don't want to take any risky chances right here.
01:00:41Got to stick with your safe.
01:00:43Antoine Smith's been pounding it in all season for the Patriots.
01:00:46They've had a lot of success running left.
01:00:50Makes it first down and goal at the five.
01:00:54Smith lines up as the single setback.
01:00:58Here he is.
01:00:59Breaks it back.
01:01:00Looking for daylight!
01:01:03Touchdown, New England!
01:01:12Goal!
01:01:28Antoine Smith.
01:01:30And we've talked about the success running left.
01:01:32They're initially starting left.
01:01:33He sees the hole.
01:01:34The Browns are overcommitting.
01:01:36He bounces it back right.
01:01:37Now watch his legs keep moving.
01:01:39Watch him break that plank.
01:01:41And I don't know if his knee wasn't used, Gus, before that ball crossed the goal line.
01:01:46Too late now for a challenge.
01:01:48The extra point is up and good.
01:01:50Two rushing touchdowns on the day for Antoine Smith.
01:01:542.43 to play in the fourth quarter at Bill Belichick's Patriot League 27-16.
01:02:03The NFL on CBS.
01:02:06Is sponsored by Cellular One.
01:02:08When you need a cell phone, Cellular One is here.
01:02:11And by Wendy's new Bacon Swiss Cheeseburger and Chicken Bacon Swiss.
01:02:20Lot to cheer about here in New England.
01:02:22The Patriots have a 27-16 lead.
01:02:25Antoine Smith with his second rushing touchdown of the day.
01:02:29But after you see what we've seen, if you're a Cleveland fan, you may get a little upset.
01:02:37Gay running the ball.
01:02:39Breaks it outside.
01:02:40Ben Gay stood up and taken down at the 25.
01:02:44Patrick Bass with the tackle.
01:02:46Let's go back to the touchdown.
01:02:48This is what I'm talking about.
01:02:50Antoine Smith.
01:02:51And look at his knee.
01:02:55That left knee, I think, is going to hit the ground right there.
01:02:59And there's the ball right here.
01:03:01Here's the plane right here.
01:03:03That's clearly, that's almost a yard away.
01:03:06And that is not a touchdown.
01:03:08And then you see him lean forward.
01:03:10Gets the call.
01:03:11Now, Gus, if we were inside two minutes, that would have been automatically challenged by the replay system.
01:03:16But the Browns didn't choose to or didn't think to challenge that spot.
01:03:21Cleveland with only one timeout remaining.
01:03:24First down and ten at the 28 now for the Browns.
01:03:27Here comes a blitz.
01:03:29Tim Couch under pressure.
01:03:31Gets it away.
01:03:32And it's incomplete intended for O.J. Santiago.
01:03:40And we'll take a look at Antoine Smith's touchdown once again.
01:03:44And the knee is down.
01:03:47And it's where the ball is when the knee is down.
01:03:49Bang, there you see it.
01:03:50And it's held right there.
01:03:51Here's the end line.
01:03:53And, you know, for the Browns, realistically, Gus, they would have just had more time run off the clock for the Patriots.
01:03:58Whether you hold them or not, they're going to definitely get the field goal.
01:04:01Maybe their best chance is to get that ball back, score quick, and get an onside kick.
01:04:06Couch.
01:04:08Underneath.
01:04:09Santiago with the catch.
01:04:11Turns it up.
01:04:12Gets over the 35 to the 37.
01:04:15Tackled hard by Roman Pfeiffer.
01:04:17It's a gain of nine.
01:04:19Cleveland trying to hurry back to the line of scrimmage.
01:04:22And you've got to throw the ball downfield.
01:04:24You can't waste time with three and four five-yard routes.
01:04:27You've got to get it downfield if you're going to get back in this game.
01:04:30Two-minute warning coming up, so they elect to get the first down.
01:04:34And the clock will stop with two minutes to go.
01:04:36They get the first down.
01:04:38Two minutes remaining, 27-16, Patriots.
01:04:4527-16, two minutes to go in the fourth.
01:04:48Tom Brady is not over 70% today, but he's 19 of 28.
01:04:56Looking for his fifth consecutive game, completing 70% or more of his passes.
01:05:03He's short right now.
01:05:05Cleveland with the ball, first and ten.
01:05:08At their own 41.
01:05:12Here's Couch.
01:05:13Underneath.
01:05:14Ball is caught.
01:05:15North cut.
01:05:16Gets to the 40.
01:05:17He loses the ball.
01:05:19And I believe the Patriots have it.
01:05:28And Northcutt is still down.
01:05:33And there is no call yet.
01:05:35And I think it was a fumble for Sheriff.
01:05:37And the Patriots have it.
01:05:41Northcutt is woozy.
01:05:46Got two hands on the ball.
01:05:48Still takes a big shot.
01:05:49And there's the ball on the ground.
01:05:51To Bucky Jones and Lawyer Malloy giving him a safety sandwich.
01:05:57And that is a big shot.
01:05:58You got to hang on to that ball, though.
01:06:00And the bottom line for this game, Cleveland lost the turnover battle.
01:06:04It kept them in the game.
01:06:06You see Northcutt taking a big shot.
01:06:12And the turnovers.
01:06:13Four turnovers for Cleveland.
01:06:15Two for New England.
01:06:21Brady.
01:06:23Hikes it.
01:06:24And this is Smith breaking it.
01:06:27Antoine Smith stays inbounds.
01:06:29Gets to midfield.
01:06:31Flags on the play, which stopped the clock.
01:06:35And most likely gets a face mask.
01:06:36And you see Antoine Smith, great veteran savvy by staying inbounds.
01:06:43And the face mask penalty called against Cleveland.
01:06:51Corey Fuller.
01:06:52Wow.
01:06:5515-yard penalty.
01:06:58And you see Antoine Smith had the corner there.
01:07:01But he would have ended up being pushed out of bounds, so he cut it back in.
01:07:05And that contributed to the face mask.
01:07:07Corey Fuller thought he was going to continue toward the sideline.
01:07:09But Smith, knowing that he's got to keep this clock rolling, decided to stay inbounds.
01:07:19So that will make it first down at the Cleveland 35.
01:07:26The Patriots break toward the line of scrimmage, and they will take a knee.
01:07:34Now tonight on 60 Minutes, before September 11th,
01:07:36it was the most talked about crime of the year.
01:07:38But suppose the culprit was also a victim.
01:07:41Confused?
01:07:42Suppose you watched 60 Minutes tonight, then and all knew the education of Max Bickford,
01:07:46followed by the story of a beautiful stranger who mysteriously arrives in a small town.
01:07:51Hallmark Hall of Fame presents the seventh stream tonight on CBS.
01:07:56The executive producers of the National Football League on CBS are Shaw McManus and Terry Ewer.
01:08:01Today's game produced by Bob Monsbach, directed by Steve Milton.
01:08:04The associate director is Sean Robbins and the broadcast associate, the Duke, Joel Dukart.
01:08:11Our statistician today, Rusta Lynn.
01:08:14Our spotter, Ben Calhoun.
01:08:18Don't forget, coming up next, the second game of our doubleheader.
01:08:22It's the New York Jets at Pittsburgh or the Kansas City Chiefs at the Oakland Raiders.
01:08:31And the New England Patriots will improve to eight and five on the season.
01:08:39With a win over Cleveland today.
01:08:45So let's update the AFC playoff picture as we see it.
01:08:50Miami, Pittsburgh, Oakland lead their divisions.
01:08:54The Jets will play Pittsburgh following this football game.
01:08:59Baltimore's off today. They're eight and four.
01:09:02So New England gets even better with the win today over Cleveland.
01:09:06And the Browns fall back. Seattle, they will play tonight against Denver.
01:09:11And New England's going to get one more crack at Miami in a couple weeks here in Foxborough.
01:09:15They've got a couple of games against teams that they should beat, Carolina and Buffalo.
01:09:21New England's going to decide if they're in the playoffs this year or not.
01:09:24They definitely can control their own destiny.
01:09:28And let's take a look. The Pats still have a bye remaining on their schedule on the 28th.
01:09:33So they play at Buffalo, one of the worst teams in the National Football League, then home to Miami.
01:09:40And their final game, they will take on George Seaford in what may be his final game at Carolina.
01:09:49Taking a shot at my former coach.
01:09:51No, I'm just telling the truth.
01:09:53Yes. Yes, you are.
01:09:56So it's fourth down.
01:09:58And the Patriots want to use all of the clock as the play clock winds down.
01:10:06Nine seconds remaining.
01:10:08You think we can get that guy to smile, Bill Belichick?
01:10:12Well, he smiled last week after beating the Jets.
01:10:16So look at what the Patriots have done.
01:10:18They beat Cleveland. They've beaten the Jets.
01:10:20They've beaten New Orleans, lost to St. Louis.
01:10:24But prior to that, they defeated Buffalo and Atlanta.
01:10:28And they are rolling in the most important part of the season.
01:10:33This young man, Tom Brady, has played excellent football.
01:10:38And I tell you what, New England still with an opportunity to win the division.
01:10:42They split with the Jets.
01:10:44Jets play Pittsburgh today. That's a tough game.
01:10:46Miami comes to town later.
01:10:50And, Gus, I actually think Miami's in trouble.
01:10:53Lost two key players. Mark Dixon, one of their best offensive linemen.
01:10:57Daryl Gardner, one of their best defensive linemen.
01:10:59They better be ready because this Patriots team is going to be a darn different team.
01:11:04Especially from December at Foxboro.
01:11:07Here's the pitch to Antoine Smith.
01:11:09And Smith draws forward to the 35.
01:11:12And Cleveland will take over with three seconds to go.
01:11:16The schedule for the Browns.
01:11:20Although they lose today, Cleveland still with a very, very positive season.
01:11:26They take on Jacksonville next week at home.
01:11:28Followed by trips to Green Bay, Tennessee.
01:11:31And the final game of the season is at Pittsburgh.
01:11:35Right now, this Browns team young.
01:11:38Not very talented, but I tell you what.
01:11:41I tell you what.
01:11:42This man has been working miracles for this Cleveland Browns franchise.
01:11:47Keeps them positive.
01:11:48They play hard from start to finish.
01:11:51And you can feel that they are going to be a lot better in the near future.
01:12:00So, Couch with one play remaining.
01:12:02And he tosses it up top.
01:12:04Kevin Johnson with the grab.
01:12:06And Johnson is dropped at the 45.
01:12:08And that's it.
01:12:09The final score from Foxborough Stadium.
01:12:12The New England Patriots defeat the Cleveland Browns 27-16.
01:12:17For Brent Jones, this is Gus Johnson saying so long.
01:12:20Coming up next, game two of our doubleheader.
