00:00games past for the Patriots they've been soft in the middle in this game they
00:06change and they're running more safe single safety in the middle of the field
00:09and so whereas Chandler expected there to be a gap there there was a safety
00:14standard right where he wanted to throw it on the Guinness now with 48 and a
00:18half career sacks Patriots showing six seven men in the box
00:24they bring some heat Chandler reads it dumps it underneath and complete Tony
00:29Martin to the intended receiver and New England's defense up front Hamilton
00:36Mitchell in Anthony Pleasant backers Vrabel Johnson ruski and Pfeiffer and
00:41the backfield of law and Smith of the corners Jones and Malloy are your
00:46safeties and you've got to give the Patriots defense credit there that was a
00:50change in scheme more attacking with the safety in the middle Atlanta wasn't ready
00:53for Chris Moore his foot is not answered this season worst average in
01:00the NFC with a thirty seven point six average high hanger fair catch taken at
01:06the 33 yard line so second chance coming up for Brady and the Patriots and we'll
01:15be back log on to NFL comm and vote for the ASC
01:20NFC All-Stars at playing the 2002 Pro Bowl vote now only at NFL.com Brady
01:31nice job hard cadence count I love that I absolutely love that he's a young
01:37quarterback on the road in a dome defense number 98 five-yard penalty
01:43still first down Travis Hall the left tackle the first series he goes three
01:48and out and in the next series he gets into the head of the defensive line
01:52let's listen to this hard count
02:01I like that first down and five
02:09Mark Edwards stacked up picks up three to the 42 yard line Keith Brookie made
02:18the tackle well see this is why he goes to the hard count Craig because it
02:22slows up the attacking nature of Atlanta's defensive line that's a
02:27different style this year than last last year Atlanta's defensive line was catch
02:31the offensive lineman read and react this year it is attack and so it's a
02:36good thing for the offensive line for the quarterback to do hard counts
02:39because the defensive line can't get the jump second down and one Brady they
02:47flush that backfield clean with five wideouts good protection weights
02:52underneath and complete he wanted Patrick pass
02:59so third down call it one you know very aggressive play calling early though
03:04that's the second time this drive they've gone to an empty backfield Drew
03:08Bledsoe calling in the play to Brady has been absolutely spectacular in helping
03:15this young guy he has been so graciously giving a lot of people think to the
03:19detriment of his own career
03:22tough yards it's gonna be close as Edwards turned his body and tried to
03:26slice in for the first down around the 43 yard line Brookie and again around
03:31the football you know Brooklyn we had a nice talk with him yesterday he replaced
03:34a great legend here in Atlanta linebacker Jesse Tuggle who retired the
03:40teammates over calling him Honolulu there forever because of Pro Bowl
03:44possibilities yeah he's probably the best linebacker you've never heard of
03:49and now he's starting to get the recognition as he goes to Hawaii and
03:53goes to those Pro Bowls he will he was an outside linebacker he had the range
03:57and speed out there and now they moved in this year inside partly because they
04:01wanted to get number 54 Chris draft some place to play but because of that you've
04:06got a middle linebacker with the speed in the range of an inside linebacker now
04:11here's what's important about that first down right there they barely made it
04:14right remember that hard count at the beginning of the drive they only had to
04:18get five yards and they got five yards at a foot as we take a look here got Mark
04:26Edwards gets over he gets the first but he got it because of the hard count two
04:30plays before first at 10 Brady sets up the screen
04:41Oh deliver the hit was Antoine Smith he knew the belt was coming from McBurroughs
04:47and so was it a take in the head you know Trevor he said I'm going to dish
04:50it out to yeah and he's talking to McBurroughs give him credit but it's
04:55going to be a screen it's going to come over here and then watch Mike Compton
04:58the left guard number 77 he's going to be the key to the play here he is right
05:04there now he's going to stay up on his man he doesn't have to drive him
05:07anywhere he just has to stay in his face the back will then make the cut so 17
05:12yard pickup
05:14back-to-back first down Brady deep ball on the button and complete
05:25Terrell Buckley was the intended receiver number 27 now Buckley on your
05:31charts listed as too deep at the right corner yeah and Ray Buchanan is looking
05:36at a cornerback knows what's going to happen a corner is not going to run a
05:40route he's just a ways going to cut he's going to run straight up the field so
05:44basically Ray Buchanan knew hey if I just beat him in the foot race or tie
05:47him I got it well you're looking at one of the most intense corners most vocal
05:51corners in the National Football League
05:56Patton in motion on second down
06:05number 97 the third year pro out of Virginia and a former number one round
06:10draft pick by this club back in 99 and this is the pass rushing style they want
06:15collapse the pocket take a look at Travis Hall number 98
06:18Kearney's 97 but 98 Paul is the one that gets his hand up in the face and forces
06:23Brady to pull that ball down and that gives Kearney time to come around and
06:28tackle it from behind collapse the pocket collectively and you squeeze the
06:33quarterback
06:36third down three wideouts Brady play action throws a complete inside the 20
06:44down to the 15 yard line and it was right on the button to Troy Brown when
06:50it had to be on the button Conrad Hamilton had perfect coverage on Troy
06:54Brown and Brady if you have a question as to whether he's rattled he gets
06:58pressured in the pocket he's going to move to his left wait for Brown to clear
07:03and then drill that ball moves to his left and drills and look at the coverage
07:07there's two guys with a third the linebacker coming in Chris draft
07:14Troy Brown picks up 28 another first down
07:20Falcons pointing the other way and a nice drive by New England is stopped at
07:26the 13-yard line Kearney brought the loose football in for
07:31the Falcons boy that's a here we go again for New England
07:43the NFL on CBS is sponsored by Southwest Airlines proud sponsor of the NFL and
07:50official airline of Super Bowl 36 Chevy trucks the most dependable longest
07:56trucks on the road and by NexTel how business gets done
08:05a beautiful skyline of Atlanta now inside the Georgia Dome scoreless
08:10between New England and Atlanta second offensive series for the Falcons stopped
08:15after that fumble by Antoine Smith first and ten or stop this drive at their own
08:2113-yard line Chandler sets up the screen incomplete off the hands of Maurice Smith
08:27yeah he does set it up the whole setup to this entire offense is the run everything
08:36comes off the run play-action passes how they get the deep ball thrown and off the
08:42run they want to throw the screen the problem is that Maurice Smith ran into
08:48Bobby Hamilton number 91 and couldn't get out
09:00second down at 10 823 left opening quarter not much time for Chandler and he takes his seat
09:08or the corners came in and pinched Hamilton pleasant and the rest of the guys in white
09:14yeah and this is the changing game plan Craig New England has sat back in a soft zone the last
09:20several games and so Chandler doesn't expect the corner don't even see him coming and they have
09:25now had more man coverage in this game plan for Atlanta's offense and this is a change Atlanta
09:32right now has to make an adjustment because their expectation in play calling is to play a soft zone
09:37and not a lot of pressure from glitches that's not what they're getting Chandler on third down
09:41has the best quarterback rating in the National Football League of just over 120 he's looking at
09:46third and 17 from his end zone steps up and can run tucks it and then take them down at the 14
09:53yard line by Parker number 97 Riddick Parker five-year pro on a North Carolina well there's a
10:02lot of pressure here and there's pressure from the defensive line this time they don't blitz
10:07the reason they don't blitz is because they want to leave eight guys back in coverage that's why
10:12Chandler had nowhere to throw second punt of the day for Chris Moore his first travel 36 yards he's
10:20a yard deep in his end zone Troy Brown awaits fair catch angle to the far sideline and they're gonna
10:32mark this this ball out around the 40 another and some bluebirds early here in Atlanta not a good
10:39kick by Moore 27 yards scoreless at the Georgia Dome 705 left opening quarter there's Brady Trevor
10:51week six at Indy 7 of 7 last week against Denver 8 of 8 he started slow 205 but I was impressed with
10:57Detroit Brown just before the fumble by Antoine Smith yeah he's not two of five because he's
11:05performing poorly he's two of five because there's very good pass defense he's playing
11:09against two of the best corners in the NFL and Ray Buchanan and Ashley Ashley Ambrose and both of
11:15those guys will play very tight coverage on his receivers and so it'll be hard to complete those
11:20easy underneath passes that he's completed in games past second down a nine near sideline
11:33not much good read by Atlanta's defenses Troy Brown has pushed back to the 41 Ambrose Ashley
11:41Ambrose the right corner ten years out of Mississippi Valley College and that's the
11:46tight coverage I mean that play has worked for the last four games for the Patriots and for Tom
11:52Brady because cut corners have played off of these receivers but you can see number 33 just
11:57flash at the bottom of your screen he was right on the line of scrimmage at the beginning of this
12:00play and that's how they're gonna play it all game long he told us yesterday in our meetings
12:05that Ambrose says I like to play tight while Ray likes to play play a little bit looser shotgun
12:11Brady good protection throws and a little hop on a skip incomplete David Patton at the 25 Ray
12:21Buchanan back there on coverage and now they're gonna have to punt and once again that fumble
12:26just stopped all the momentum that the Patriots offense had built up although field position when
12:32you look at this exchange of punts Craig just with the exchange of punts right now the Patriots have
12:36gained about 30 yards of field position they're punting from their own 41 Walter will punt for the
12:43second time his first kick of 27 yards left footer gets it up another high hanger and a fair catch
12:58taken by Darren Gordon at the 10 30-yard kick still scoreless in Atlanta we'll be back the NFL
13:10on CBS is sponsored by staples staples has everything you need for your business at great
13:16low prices and by IBM taking e-business and your business to the next level well Monday on CBS is
13:27an all-new night of great television starting with the King of Queens followed by yes dear and
13:32Monday's number one comedy comedy everybody loves Raymond then stay tuned for the Ted Danson in
13:36Becker plus don't miss an all-new family law it's all here Monday on CBS third drive of the quarter
13:45for Atlanta math is in motion they go ground not much let's go to New York Jim Nance with an NFL
13:58today update Jim all right over 21 months ago right there in the Georgia Dome Kevin Dyson reached
14:03for that final yard against the Rams and was denied today he takes the pass from McNair he
14:08reaches and he gets it this time for the quick seven seven nothing Titans over Jacksonville and
14:13let's go back to Craig and Trevor thank you Jim Dyson from the University of Utah coming off a
14:18very bad bad knee injury well look at the first possession seven plays minus two yards two sacks
14:25and twice three and out Chandler sets and throws incomplete Reggie Kelly the tight end good coverage
14:38by the outside linebacker Mike Brable you know what you look at that Kevin Dyson reaches and
14:43you think about what if in that Super Bowl yeah I'll tell you what would he give to swap plays
14:49let me be a yard short today and an inch over the line then what if what if third down at nine
15:01Chris Chandler 36 years young you know he said hey I know my position I may play three or four
15:11more Chandler sets and throws complete at the 27-yard line and a great grab by Tony Martin
15:20nice to be back now Tony after missing four games with that broken collarbone that first
15:26one's always the toughest that because you're gonna get hit and then you're gonna hit the
15:31ground now he's got a broken collarbone he's gonna hit the ground and he's gonna get landed
15:36on by Otis Smith and how does it feel you know what he jogged off the field he's not there now
15:41but we'll know in a few minutes if he comes back whether or not that thing felt okay 16-yard gain
15:46first down Falcons at their own 27-yard line pitch out
16:03and a herd of Patriots take him down at the 14-yard line led by Ty Law then an eight-man
16:10front up to stop the run that means you'd better stop it or there'll be a lot of space
16:14the problem here is with three safety the last line of defense to Bucky Jones he's right here
16:20he's gonna come inside the back is gonna cut outside and to Bucky's gonna get stuck right
16:25there and that's what's gonna allow Maurice Smith now look at the Bucky's inside and Maurice Smith
16:31cuts just to the outside and now because it was an eight-man front there's nobody left in the
16:36backfield 58-yard run for Maurice Smith to the 14-yard line of New England first and 10 Falcons
16:45Smith cut down around the 12-yard line but what a turnaround this is Craig New England had Atlanta
16:51backed up the first three drives way back inside their own 20 and all of a sudden two plays later
16:56they're down in the opposite red zone it's big plays that make the difference when you look at
17:04what kinds of plays make a winning team in the NFL one is turnovers and one is big plays
17:10meaning runs over 10 yards and passes over 15 yards and they just had two in a row in the red
17:18zone Chandler very effective the Falcons offensively 17 times inside the 28 touchdowns eight field goals
17:26again right side big hole and it closes quickly at the five Maurice Smith well this has been his
17:34drive but there is a flag holding so take that game back boy penalties we're still in the first
17:44quarter and that's the third penalty and Dan Reeves teams are usually very very disciplined
17:50this is this is just again both teams are trying are trying to get some momentum they're trying to
17:58get something going on but it seems like whenever they start something holding offense number 62
18:03the spot of the foul and the dead ball spot we're both beyond the line of scrimmage we will penalize
18:11from the spot of the foul 10 yards I'll tell you something that they call that a bear hug
18:20that Leo Bustalia would be happy with that you need 10 hugs a day well now Ted Johnson has his
18:26first got his first four flags for flags for the Falcons in this opening quarter for 35 yards New
18:34England yet to be flagged Chandler ducks trouble another flag hold on John Jefferson on a knee
18:54caught the pass but there's one two flags down well you have something at the line of scrimmage
19:00it's either a false starter and offsides you've definitely got pass interference in the back of
19:04the end zone against the Bucky Jones the funny thing there is it to Bucky Jones outside defense
19:12number 91 that penalty is declined interference defense number 34 that penalty is declined
19:20touchdown John Jefferson with the touchdown durable wideout missing only one game to pass 11 seasons
19:31and he picks one up on a knee and this play breaks down and Chandler sees that to Bucky Jones
19:36number 34 thinks that the plays over and he takes his eyes off of Jefferson and Chandler has enough
19:42confidence in Jefferson that if he's if he gets the ball in there he'll take it away and he did
19:47really the extra point to come perfect 12 for 12 now 13 of 13 and the point after department
19:59and so after some early struggles Atlanta moves the football down the field and puts one in for
20:06seven seven nothing Atlanta thanks to the touchdown catch by Shawn Jefferson his second of the season
20:20seven plays 89 yards but the key play was the 58-yard run by Maurice Smith
20:29the kick is taken at the 6-yard line Curtis Jackson works at nearside makes a nice cut
20:35and is dropped at the 25-yard line as teacher and pupil say Atlanta this season Trevor has
20:46been just dominating in the opening quarter with that touchdown they have now outscored their
20:51opponent 55 to 3 in the first quarter of play you know why take a look at that there that's a guy
20:59who has earned that ball spot with a lot of experience and it's the experience that he comes
21:04out in the opening quarter and takes over again Brady goes back to work Patriots on the ground
21:13to pop it off the right side Smith crashes in for a pickup of three up to the 29-yard line
21:19Brookie who's been very active in this opening quarter with another tackle and look at the way
21:24Antoine Smith covered up that ball there was no way in the world Brookie was going to be allowed
21:28to get it out Bill Belichick facing the sidelines down seven and they come back the other way
21:43sliding up to the 34-yard line and again Brookie making the tackle on Antoine Smith and Wednesday
21:51on CBS Vince Gill, Sheryl Crow, Tim McGraw, Brooks and Dunn, Willie Nelson, the Dixie Chicks and more
21:57the biggest acts of country music performed live at the Country Music Awards that's Wednesday right
22:01here on CBS. I hope Faith Hill is up for something. She is just absolutely delightful. I met her. She was just very gracious with her fans. I know you'll be tuning in is what you're saying. Patriots empty the backfield Brady on the keeper as they were looking at third and short this will be close
22:21Travis Hall able to plug up the middle for Atlanta. Well that's three runs in a row. Patriots are really getting back to basics and one thing they haven't had for a number of years is a dominating feature back and the closest they have right now is Antoine Smith. Smith isn't a guy that's going to break a lot of big runs but he says he gets stronger as the game goes on if he gets lots of carries and he's been lobbying the coaches to give him more carries. This first quarter so far he's had a lot. He's struggled in that first half against Denver, he's struggled in that first half against Denver, he's struggled in that first half against Denver, he's struggled in that first half against Denver, he's struggled in that first half against Denver, he's struggled in that first half against Denver, he's struggled in that first half against Denver, he's struggled in that first half against Denver, he's struggled in that first half against Denver, he's struggled in that first half against Denver, he's struggled in that first half against
22:52Last week only five carries for nine yards Now Brady steps, pump throws. Incomplete.
22:59David Patton was along the far sideline but Buchanan was providing coverage.
23:05Buchanan was all over Patton on that one it was just pure man to man coverage and Patton threw the best move he could and he threw such a good move he fell down.
23:15Buchanan is gonna have his leg in Patton's pants right here. That's how close he is.
23:19Look, he breaks, he turns around, he comes, great coverage.
23:23The Ray Buchanan, since 1997, 24 picks.
23:27That's the most in the National Football League.
23:29They throw underneath to loosen things up a bit.
23:32Patton picks up yardage to the 42-yard line.
23:35Brookings has gone right to left, up the middle, you name it.
23:39Keith Brookings has been there.
23:41He's averaging 12 stops a game.
23:43And Brookings tackling David Patton, little David Patton in there, is not a fair fight.
23:49They better not send Patton in there too often, unless they clear Brookings first,
23:53or they'll be without a receiver.
23:56Final seconds of the first quarter.
23:58Winding down.
24:06Atlanta's defense having their way in the first quarter.
24:09And that ends the first quarter with the score, Atlanta leading New England 7-0.
24:14We'll return to the Georgia Dome after this message.
24:20Start the second quarter here at the Georgia Dome.
24:22Tom Brady so far in this game, 4 of 9 for 52 yards.
24:26Big play here, Trevor, as he looks at third and two.
24:29Rocking Sean Blitz.
24:31Eight men in the box.
24:33Brady sets, throws underneath, complete.
24:35First down and more to the 45-yard line.
24:40And it was Curtis Jackson who was able to sneak underneath.
24:44And Jackson, the second-year pro out of Texas.
24:46Tell you what I like about that play.
24:48Most of the passes of Tom Brady have gone to Troy Brown and David Patton.
24:54Here you've got a third receiver.
24:55He's getting involved, Curtis Jackson, not just in the game plan early,
24:59but also on a critical third and two.
25:01I like it that Brady is looking to other receivers right now.
25:05You know what? And that equals poise.
25:07That equals poise.
25:10From the 45-yard line.
25:13And they spread it out.
25:15They throw inside.
25:17Kevin Faulk, though it's a nice read by Atlanta.
25:20They're going to drop him for a one- or two-yard loss.
25:23Henri Crockett, who used to be Henry Crockett of Florida State,
25:28but went Henri when he decided to become a pro.
25:31What did Deion Sanders say about that?
25:33You know, Leroy goes to Leroy when you become a pro.
25:36That's right.
25:38How about poise? Second season, there's Chris Chandler, 14.
25:41He's 24 years of age. He's been with one team.
25:43Chandler has been around this league only his sixth NFL start.
25:48And remember, he was on the practice squad not even that a year ago.
25:51He was a number-four quarterback.
25:53Faulk stumbled, but regains his balance to the 36-yard line.
25:58Well, they wanted to run that screen pass to that side.
26:01They had man coverage. David Patton ran.
26:03Ashley Ambrose deep.
26:05And they saw that the time before, but they couldn't get it completed.
26:08This time, they run the same direction, different way.
26:12He fakes it to the left side, goes back to his right.
26:15I think you see a nice block by number 65, the center, Damian Woody,
26:18but I like it that they came back two plays in a row
26:21to where they thought there was a soft spot, a play they thought would work.
26:24Now, another critical third and short.
26:27Bledsoe with the headsets, looks on.
26:29Ninth play of this drive.
26:31Brady, Antoine Smith.
26:36Gonna be short.
26:39Boy, that time, Antoine ran to darkness.
26:42There was a hole there, and he ran right into the back of his guard, Mike Compton.
26:48Come on, he's frustrated. I think he knows that he did.
26:51Now, right here, is this four-down territory at this point in the game?
26:54You bet. Take a look at this.
26:56He's gonna run right into the back of number 77.
26:59Think right there.
27:01Now, the safety, Chris Hudson, was coming up,
27:03but he could move Chris Hudson, and you know what?
27:05Four-down territory, that's right. Here they go.
27:08Patriots, 3 for 10 on fourth downs.
27:12Good.
27:14That and more.
27:15Good. You get a tough guy head coach like Bill Belichick,
27:18he says, OK, offensive line, OK, 230-pound running back,
27:22if you can't get this two feet, then you're not worth being out there,
27:26and they respond to that.
27:28Offensive linemen love it when you give them enough credit
27:31that you say, guys, I trust you,
27:33and nobody says anything to them except,
27:35what do you want to have for lunch?
27:37Belichick is setting a tone with his big boys up front.
27:39Fresh downs for New England.
27:41Brady out of the center at the 34.
27:44Good pitch back.
27:45Flea flicker, and it didn't work.
27:50That play took a long time to develop, but you know what?
27:53Again, the corners of Atlanta had great coverage downfield.
27:58Well, they only sent two receivers out.
28:00The corners were back, but so were both stations, Craig.
28:02They were in a cover two, meaning a very soft, deep zone coverage.
28:07And so Brady is going to hand out to Antoine Smith.
28:09They're supposed to draw up the safeties, but they're in a soft zone.
28:12They're supposed to be deep no matter what.
28:14And so as Brady's looking down the field,
28:16he's seeing both receivers double cover.
28:18Didn't expect that.
28:20Kearney was the first to come in and wrap him up.
28:2212th play of this drive.
28:24Second down, a dart.
28:26Complete patent to the 19.
28:30Boy, you talked about the poise of Brady, Craig.
28:33Wow.
28:34He gets sacked on the play before.
28:36The defense calls the perfect scheme to blow up the play that they had.
28:40And the next play, he stands in the pocket,
28:42drills the ball into zone coverage again,
28:45and makes a long completion to keep the chains moving.
28:48Trevor, there's been much written
28:50and talked about Brady's mobility, his arm strength.
28:54Personally, what I've seen, this guy can throw the football.
28:58And he doesn't stay down when you get him down.
29:03Antoine Smith on the pitch behind the seam.
29:05Cuts outside.
29:06Back inside to the two.
29:10What a tough run by Antoine Smith.
29:13Give him credit there.
29:15He burst through that hole.
29:17You got to believe him when he says, hey, keep giving me the ball.
29:19He had six carries in the first quarter.
29:21Take a look at number 44, Mark Edwards, the fullback, right there, 44.
29:24Bang.
29:26He hits Chris Draft, number 54, and that's what opens up the hole.
29:32Smith numbers eight carries, 30 yards.
29:37A good number of cuts in there, too.
29:39Big man.
29:40He cut about six times on that run.
29:42First and goal.
29:43New England, 14th play.
29:45Not this time.
29:47Cut down, maybe a loss of a yard.
29:49Back to the three.
29:51See, this is where the Patriots are dangerous.
29:53A lot of people wrote him off before the season started as being sort of a
29:56weaker team, a team that you can look to as a victory on your schedule.
30:00But all of a sudden, they've beaten some very good teams.
30:03And here on the road now, Atlanta tried to get him down with that first
30:06touchdown, and New England's right back in their face.
30:09You cannot discount these guys.
30:1315th play of this drive.
30:16They push him back another yard to the five.
30:26I'll tell you, Atlanta is not discounting anything now.
30:30Sean Sueda and Keith Brooking, number 56, are going to come in.
30:35They're Sueda, 93, and here comes Brooking to finish him off.
30:38Boy, I'll tell you, if there was any discounting before, they're not doing it now.
30:41They're really attacking this line of scrimmage.
30:45Sueda, the 300-pounder, with good feet, able to drive him back.
30:52Third down and goal.
30:56The backfield is empty.
30:59Five wide outs, timing pattern in the corner.
31:03Touchdown!
31:06Kevin Falk.
31:14What an outstanding play call.
31:19They take Kevin Falk as a running back.
31:22They split him out wide, very wide, so that Keith Brooking, the linebacker,
31:26has to cover him.
31:27Keith Brooking is never out that wide.
31:29He has no idea how to make a play on a fade route in the corner of the end zone
31:33because he never practices it.
31:35He has to do it here because of the empty backfield and the positioning of Falk
31:39as a wide receiver.
31:40Falk's got that football.
31:41His first touchdown receiving this season.
31:45Benetteri with the extra point to tie.
31:49Benetteri now 18 of 19, and PATs were tied at 7.
31:54Brady, cool and calm with the touchdown toss to Falk.
32:01Nine minutes left in the opening quarter.
32:0316th place, 75 yards.
32:05Falk with the 4-yard touchdown.
32:07Brady 6 of 6 on that drive, but Trevor, what was impressive,
32:11his poise that we talked about.
32:13He was 3 of 8 before that 6-for-6 drive.
32:17Finding some rhythm again on the road.
32:20Jared Dahl up the middle to the 30.
32:25Hey, everybody in New England, knock on wood, but I'm going to say it,
32:28no interceptions.
32:30Now the two are talking.
32:32Let's go on Brady.
32:337-7.
32:37The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Chrysler.
32:42Drive equals love.
32:44Next tell how business gets done.
32:48And by Pizza Hut, where every week this fall you can get one of our pizzas
32:52for an unbelievable price.
32:56Well, coming up on the next half-time report,
32:59join Jim, Mike, Randy, and Jerry.
33:01All the scores, all the highlights in the latest NFL news,
33:03plus a CBS News update, America on guard.
33:06That's coming up next.
33:097-7 in Atlanta.
33:12Maurice Smith on the pitch, driven back.
33:16Remarkable progress to the original line of scrimmage.
33:23Roman Pfeiffer defeated the block of Bob Christian, number 44,
33:27who's one of the best blocking fullbacks in the NFL.
33:31First two drives, six plays, minus six yards.
33:34Last drive, 7-89.
33:37And most of those were on two plays, one long pass from Tony Martin,
33:41one long run by Maurice Smith.
33:45Second down, Ted Chandler.
33:47Over the middle, picked off!
33:50Otis Smith!
33:56Second pick of the season.
33:59And he runs it back 17 yards and bore the momentum,
34:03the emotion, the excitement.
34:06And he's going to get it.
34:08He's going to get it.
34:10Back 17 yards and bore the momentum,
34:13the emotion has switched here at the Georgia Dome.
34:16It has done so because of scheme.
34:19Chandler thinks this is a too-deep zone.
34:22In a too-deep zone, Otis Smith, number 45, is not there.
34:27In a too-deep zone, Otis Smith lets him go and passes him off to the safety.
34:30Instead, it's a man coverage, which they have not shown very much of
34:34the last several games, and they got inside Chris Chandler's head on that play.
34:38That caused the interception.
34:40You know, he's the oldest Patriot, just 36 years young.
34:43He turned October 22nd, he can still motor.
34:46On the ground, the boy laying in the helmet.
34:49My, oh my!
34:51What a pop Antoine Smith delivered.
34:54He delivered it with another tackler down around his legs.
34:59Flag is down.
35:01My goodness.
35:02Yeah, flag is down inside the 20.
35:04We'll get the call from Dick Hanteck.
35:07He's calling on the Patriots.
35:09Again, neither team can maintain momentum for more than about three plays.
35:18Tripping.
35:19Offense.
35:20Number 85.
35:2110-yard penalty.
35:23Repeat the down.
35:24First down.
35:25That's tied in.
35:27Jermaine Wiggins.
35:29Yeah, he gets his left leg up in the air.
35:33That's a leg whip if he hits him hard with it.
35:36A leg whip is illegal as well.
35:38Since he just stuck it up in the air and tried to trip, it's still a penalty.
35:41Craig, they do that because you can injure people.
35:44If you hit him hard with your leg, you can hurt the defender.
35:46If you just stick it up there, the defender can break your leg.
35:50Wiggins, second-year pro out of Georgia.
35:52Got the start today for the injured Rod Rutherford.
35:59Flags again.
36:00Fingers pointing each way.
36:02Kearney was quick off the ball for Atlanta.
36:06Ball start.
36:07Offense.
36:08Number 85.
36:105-yard penalty.
36:11Still first down.
36:12I'll tell you what.
36:13One more penalty for Jermaine.
36:14That's two in a row.
36:15That's two.
36:16One more and all the fans are going to throw their hats out onto the stadium floor.
36:19That will make it a hat trip.
36:21Trevor, you played the line throughout your 12-year NFL career.
36:25That offensive line.
36:27You can tell some emotions boiling up right now.
36:29A lot of finger pointing.
36:31You've been through that.
36:32Finger pointing because you've got guys hitting each other in the mouth.
36:35After a while, you take that personally.
36:39Brady checks off.
36:41Throws to the flat on the far side.
36:44A catch by Smith, but not much after that.
36:47Crockett on coverage for Atlanta.
36:50See, that's the problem.
36:51It's second and 25 right now because of two consecutive penalties on the tight end.
36:55Jermaine Wiggins, he's better than that.
36:57He's better than that.
36:59Look what it did to his team.
37:00They get the big play that gets them the ball down in scoring position.
37:04Right now, they have third.
37:06Let's check that.
37:07Second and 25.
37:13In motion.
37:14Brady sets and fires.
37:16Patton Reed makes a tough catch.
37:19He took a shot to the midsection around the 31-yard line by Ray Buchanan.
37:24Yet, another flag down at the 46-yard line.
37:30My goodness.
37:31They're saying that's illegal hand to the face.
37:33A lot of times, an offensive lineman, he'll get his hand up under the chin strap of a defensive pass rusher to stop his charge.
37:40It looks like they're going to call that.
37:42Illegal hand.
37:44Offense.
37:45Offense.
37:46Number 76, hands to the face.
37:4810-yard penalty.
37:50Repeat the down.
37:51Second down.
37:52Holy smokes.
37:53That's Grant Williams who starts and left tackle today for Mike Light.
37:57Matt Light.
37:5925 yards in penalties on this drive.
38:01Yeah, his left arm gets the face mask, and then he pulls it down.
38:04But that's enough.
38:05And that's a good call by the official.
38:06But the killer here is, holy smokes, they had a chance to go down there with some momentum in scoring.
38:11Look where they are now.
38:12Second and 45.
38:19That field is empty.
38:22Brady throws.
38:23Far sidelines.
38:24Little pitch and catch.
38:26And it's brought down by Smith up to the 41-yard line.
38:32Hit by Chris Graff, the outside linebacker, who's missed nearly a month with a toe injury.
38:44You know, people say toe.
38:45Trevor, come on.
38:46No.
38:47You know, turf toe.
38:48I used to think that turf toe, I thought they were just sort of low tolerance for pain until I got one.
38:54And then let me tell you, it is excruciating.
39:00Third down and 25.
39:02How about it be third down and 30?
39:04How about another flag?
39:08False start.
39:09Offense, number 65.
39:11Five-yard penalty.
39:12Still third down.
39:13You know, I'm thinking to myself, now Brady's been in the lineup long enough that they know the case.
39:18I mean, this isn't like some new quarterback now.
39:20No, the problem is we're in a dome.
39:22And he's going to pull.
39:24See, Woody, 65, is normally the center.
39:27He was a left guard because they're in the shotgun formation and he can't snap shotgun.
39:31Right guard, or check that, left guard, Mike Compton, goes into center.
39:35So he's not used to playing guard and jumps.
39:40Third and 30.
39:41Brady, pressure from behind, throws complete around the 30-yard line to Wiggins.
39:48They tie it in.
39:49They tie it in.
39:51Now this is going to be about a 47-yard field goal attempt.
39:55But again, it's because of those penalties.
39:57In this drive, they had 30 yards of penalties.
40:01This drive alone.
40:06Vinatieri, 22 of 22 field goals, 21 of 21 extra points all time in Dome Stadium.
40:12This will test his leg.
40:14This will test his leg.
40:15They're going to mark this down just inside the 38-yard line.
40:20So call it.
40:2447.
40:27Good kick.
40:29Splits the uprights.
40:36So Vinatieri keeps that Dome streak alive.
40:4010-7 New England.
40:49426 before the half.
40:51New England has come back with 10 unanswered points.
40:54And officially, it was a 48-yard field goal off the foot of Vinatieri.
41:00Look at that.
41:01Four plays, minus four yards.
41:03The flags were flying, but yet they get the big boot for Vinatieri.
41:07All four guys who got penalties ought to buy him dinner.
41:10Consecutive days this week.
41:13Short kick at the 6.
41:15Derek Vaughn.
41:17Vaughn at the 20, 25, 30.
41:19Vaughn.
41:20Vaughn at the 50.
41:22Vaughn at the 35-yard line.
41:25Chased out by Vinatieri.
41:29Boy, they sent Tim Dwight to San Diego as part of the trade of draft choices to be able to draft Michael Vick.
41:36Tim Dwight was their returner.
41:38Take a look at Vaughn.
41:39The blocking is spectacular.
41:41What's key here is that guys throw their block at the time that he gets there.
41:46It's hard to sustain a special teams block.
41:48When you see a return like this up the middle, it's usually because he arrives a split second before or after the blocks are thrown.
41:56And that's what happened on that return.
42:00413 left before the half.
42:02First and 10.
42:03First and 10.
42:04Falcons with the 58-yard return.
42:07In good field position.
42:12Mo Smith.
42:13The lone Benton Chandler.
42:15Three-step drop.
42:16Ball batted up in the air and nearly pulled down and dropped.
42:20Almost a miracle catch by Jefferson, number 84.
42:24I think Jefferson was trying just to bat that thing down.
42:26He had Ole Smith right in his back.
42:28And really better to survive for second down and get that thing out of the air.
42:33I'll tell you what, that kickoff return was just critical.
42:35Here we go, Jefferson.
42:36This ball's going to go up.
42:37Ole Smith is right there.
42:38Jefferson mostly is just going to try to get this thing onto the ground.
42:42But I'll tell you, following a score from New England, to answer it with a kickoff return like that is a great play for Atlanta.
42:53Crumpler, the rookie, tied it in in motion.
42:55Chandler rolling out.
42:57Chased and dropped.
42:59Richard Seymour, the rookie from Georgia.
43:02Oh, they are so high on this young man.
43:05Coming off some hamstring problems.
43:07He was motoring.
43:09He was motoring.
43:10He replaces some of those guys they lost.
43:12Chad Eaton, take a look at 93.
43:14He's just going to come right through.
43:16And he gets by center, Todd McClure, before McClure realizes that the guard's not there to help him.
43:22Good explosion in quickness off the ball.
43:24First sack of his pro career.
43:27Number one pick out of Georgia.
43:296'6", 305.
43:33What's your size, Trev?
43:34Actually a little smaller than me.
43:37Thanks for mentioning it.
43:38My pleasure.
43:43Haven't seen a flag in a minute or two.
43:45Yeah, well, a minute or two.
43:46That's about right.
43:48Think they need to have umbrellas down there.
43:51There's three flags on the ground right now.
43:54It's third and 16.
43:56It's probably going to be a false start unless the defense drew him off.
44:00But Atlanta did jump.
44:02The question will be who jumped first.
44:09False start.
44:11Offense, number 71.
44:13Five yard penalty.
44:14Still third down.
44:15That's Travis Claridge.
44:16And I guess Atlanta figures that since New England had to play third and very long in that last drive,
44:23they'll return the favor.
44:25Now instead of third and 16, which is bad enough, it's third and 21.
44:28Thank you very much.
44:29Nine flags so far combined for 70 yards in this first half.
44:33And still, it's under three and a half minutes to go.
44:36You know, the great return basically put Atlanta looking right at three before the half.
44:42And now the flags have pushed them back almost to midfield.
44:46Yeah, flags in the sack.
44:48Chandler rolling to his left.
44:50Steps.
44:51Fires.
44:52And at the last second, Otis Smith able to put a hand down to knock it away.
45:0112-year pro out of Missouri.
45:05He had safety help behind him.
45:07Two receivers went up the left sideline.
45:09There were three guys to cover.
45:11It's Otis Smith.
45:13He knows the deep part is covered for him.
45:15So as soon as Terrence Mathis breaks, he breaks.
45:21Chris Moore in to punt.
45:23Troy Brown awaits.
45:27Fair catch at the 11.
45:29And Craig, a wasted return.
45:31What a spectacular return.
45:33He's got the ball.
45:34He's got the ball.
45:35He's got the ball.
45:36He's got the ball.
45:37He's got the ball.
45:38He's got the ball.
45:39He's got the ball.
45:40He's got the ball.
45:41What a spectacular return to follow a New England score.
45:44So that goes completely to waste because of a penalty.

46:16For Atlanta's defense, so tough against the run.
46:1914 attempts by New England, Trevor, for 36 yards.
46:23This defense has held four of their last six opponents
46:27under 100 yards rushing.
46:30Falk is taken down by the ankles.
46:32Craig, you talk about holding opponents rushing yards down.
46:36That's one of the reasons they throw those little screens
46:39and flare passes.
46:40They'll throw them to the running backs.
46:42They'll throw them also to the wide receivers,
46:44partially to replace the running game.
46:46They know how hard it is to run up inside against Atlanta,
46:49so they replace those little 3, 4, and 5-yard gainers
46:52with quick passes to the outside.
46:54Interesting timeout.
46:55They took the timeout.
46:56They have two remaining.
46:57And remember, the clock will stop again
46:59at the 2-minute warning.
47:00Well, they're taking that timeout because they think
47:02their defense can stop the Patriots here and take a punt
47:06and have good field position to get down
47:08for at least a field goal.
47:11Dan Reeves on the sideline discussing strategy there
47:15with his quarterback, Chris Chandler.
47:17Here's a comparison today.
47:19Youth against experience.
47:24120 yards, 13 of 18 for Brady.
47:26Chandler, 2 of 8.
47:28And the score, only a 3-point difference.
47:31That's impressive.
47:32Brady has hit his last 10 straight passes.
47:38They're going to love him.
47:40Margie's going to love him.
47:43They're going to love him.
47:45Mark Edwards on the jump ball to the 23.
47:49And a first down.
47:50Chris Draft made the tackle from behind.
47:53An interesting no-timeout from Atlanta at that point.
47:56The clock runs 227.
47:59You know, one thing about Brady is that he shares the wealth.
48:02I mean, he's going to go to Wiggins.
48:04He goes to Patton.
48:05You saw him go to Curtis Jackson.
48:07He'll throw to Falk.
48:08He just goes to Edwards.
48:10Seven different receivers in this game in the first half.
48:13And they needed to do that because teams are stacking up
48:16on Brown and Patton.
48:18And where he really needs to go is to the tight ends.
48:21Wiggins is going to be, he's been the forgotten man in this
48:24offense.
48:25And they've got to get more balls to Wiggins in order to
48:28free up those wide receivers on the outside.
48:31Two-minute warning.
48:3210-7 Patriots.
48:34Up by 3 on the road.
48:38Now stay tuned.
48:39Next they'll halftime report straight ahead.
48:41Jim, Mike, Randy, Jerry.
48:43They've got all the scores and highlights in the latest NFL
48:45news plus a CBS News update.
48:47America on guard.
48:48That's coming up in just a few minutes.
48:52Two minutes left in the opening half.
48:56Brady steps up.
48:58Throws incomplete.
49:01This is one of the tests of a young quarterback.
49:03If you look at Don Blackman, defensive coordinator for Atlanta
49:06on the field instead of up in the booth like most defensive
49:09coordinators.
49:10So he can see the eyes of his players.
49:12See how they feel about things.
49:14See who is spooked and who is ready to go.
49:17And that way he adjusts what he calls based on how he knows
49:20their feelings.
49:21Boy, Blackman has Patriot blood running through him.
49:25Play action.
49:26Brady steps.
49:27Throws.
49:28Complete.
49:29Troy Brown made the catch.
49:31And there was some great blanket coverage.
49:34A 25-yard pickup.
49:36Conrad Hamilton, number 24 on coverage.
49:40Timeout.
49:41We'll be back.
49:43Hey, listen.
49:44Great job, fellas.
49:45Excellent job.
49:46Every Sunday on NFL.com and America Online.
49:49We'll be right back.
50:13For 36 years, NFL Films has brought you the best in football.
50:18Now, access NFL Films TV online at NFL.com.
50:23A minute 39 remaining.
50:26How about this in this quarter, Trevor?
50:28New England with seven first downs.
50:31The Falcons, zero.
50:36Moving the football.
50:39And Brady continues to impress.
50:43Again, complete.
50:45To the 45-yard line.
50:47Well, now they've got to hustle up now because a minute 30 to go,
50:51two timeouts.
50:52They can burn one timeout, but they need to save the last one
50:56for a last-second field goal if they don't get any closer.
50:5916 of 22 for 162 yards.
51:03And a flag comes down.
51:05And does Tom Brady use a hard count there?
51:08There's a lot of veteran quarterbacks who wouldn't use a hard count there.
51:13When our talks with Brady, I was impressed.
51:15You know.
51:16Neutral zone infraction.
51:17Defense, number 75.
51:19Five-yard penalty.
51:20First down.
51:21First down, New England.
51:23Going back to Brady, we talk a lot about poise, but, you know,
51:26he says, I've been through a lot of this talk and the pressure.
51:29Don't forget, I had to wait my turn in Michigan behind a guy named Greasy.
51:34Brian Greasy.
51:38He's done a great job of spreading this ball around.
51:41Right now, Atlanta can't key on anybody.
51:44From the shotgun, goes snap.
51:46He steps and throws near sideline.
51:48On a knee, it's caught by Patton.
51:50And out of bounds, stops the clock at the 25-yard line
51:53with 1.12 left before the half.
51:55And Ray Buchanan arguing his case.
51:5815-yard pickup.
51:59Well, you know, Ray Buchanan had pretty good coverage that time,
52:02but he had absolutely no safety help
52:04because Tom Brady had already completed passes to eight different guys.
52:08So they couldn't say, well, Patton's the main target.
52:11Let's double the guy and roll coverage to him.
52:13So Buchanan was by himself.
52:15Brady found him.
52:17Three wide outs.
52:18Top of your screen.
52:20Again from the gun.
52:21Brady sets, throws.
52:26Out of bounds, but what a grab.
52:28What a grab.
52:29What a grab.
52:30Charles Johnson.
52:32Wow.
52:34And Ray Buchanan has got to feel like Tom Brady,
52:37the young up-and-coming youngster, doesn't respect him.
52:41Brady is attacking Ray Buchanan.
52:44Perfect pass.
52:46He must be bobbling this thing as he goes,
52:48eh, no, his right foot didn't get down.
52:50But it was a great effort.
52:52But if I'm Ray Buchanan, I'm thinking, you know,
52:55this young pup quarterback thinks I can't play.
53:00Second down.
53:02And they mix it up with a run.
53:04Atlanta doesn't bite.
53:06There they go.
53:07Two timeouts left.
53:08Under a minute to go now.
53:09Once again, they're starting to run out of opportunities
53:12to have short gains in the middle of the field here.
53:15They can burn one timeout
53:17and save the last one for the field goal.
53:20And now they're just letting the clock run.
53:24They've got the football in the middle of the field
53:26at the 23-yard line.
53:28I guess they're figuring third down,
53:29we're going to throw it into the end zone here
53:31or we'll kick the field goal.
53:32Patriots on the day, 5 of 9 on third down conversions.
53:37Again, the 4-1 outset.
53:39Brady steps up on the pocket, throws.
53:42And reaching out inside the 15 is Kevin Faulk.
53:46And they'll use the timeout.
53:48That stops the clock with 21 ticks left
53:51and Brooking again on the tackle for Atlanta.
53:5510-7 New England.
53:57They want more.
53:5821 ticks left before half.
54:03During that quick timeout,
54:04the officials did bring the sticks over to measure
54:07and the first down by inches
54:10just inside the 15-yard line.
54:15Yeah, that's not even inches.
54:17That's a length.
54:18Yeah, that would be a whisker.
54:22How about one of your, you know, just a thumb.
54:25Well, my thumb.
54:27Your thumb, that's...
54:28That's okay, I know what you mean.
54:34Brady.
54:36Throws wide open.
54:38Touchdown New England.
54:41Mark Edwards walked in.
54:46And there's Tom Brady finding receivers all over the field.
54:53Atlanta has no idea where to look.
54:55That's the pullback.
54:58They want everybody else deep into the end zone.
55:00You can see number 44 Mark Edwards.
55:02He's uncovered because everybody else is run off into the end zone.
55:07They sent out five different receivers on that play.
55:10Edwards was the fifth one Atlanta was looking at.
55:16Extra point to come.
55:18Snap is down.
55:19The kick is away and it's good.
55:23Edwards with his first touchdown reception.
55:26And how about Tom Brady?
55:29Two-minute drill with 15 seconds to go on the road in a dome.
55:34Takes it down against a fine defense.
55:36Scores a touchdown.
55:37Does that build confidence?
55:42You know, sitting across the desk from him last night, Trevor,
55:46I got all sorts of vibes.
55:48I mean, this young guy just has a great way
55:51of explaining his position.
55:53The pressure he feels in a large market.
55:56All that's been said.
55:57All that's been written.
55:58All about Drew Bledsoe.
56:00When and if he comes back this season.
56:03And handling that pressure.
56:04And we asked him if he thought Atlanta would come after him
56:08after the fourth quarter of four interceptions last week.
56:10And he said, you know, I hope they do.
56:12Because it gives me a chance to go over the top.
56:15What a second quarter.
56:18158 yards.
56:19Two touchdowns.
56:20And what impresses me more than anything else is that the second
56:23of those two touchdowns came on a two-minute drill on the road
56:27in a dome against a tough defense.
56:30You can't overstate how hard that is to do.
56:33Here's the great story.
56:34He said, you know what?
56:35I've been nobody really for the last year and a half since coming
56:38out of Michigan.
56:39Just doing my own thing.
56:40All of a sudden I go back to my same grocery store.
56:42The guy looks at me with a gallon of milk in my hand and
56:46Hey, aren't you a football player?
56:47Aren't you Tom Brady?
56:49Yes, indeed I am.
56:51Things change overnight.
56:53This guy's dangerous.
56:55Vaughn.
56:57Out of bounds at the 41-yard line.
57:00Well, now there's nine seconds to go.
57:01And at the 41-yard line, Atlanta has got two timeouts left.
57:06Chandler has got the wide receivers to do what Brady just did.
57:09Spread the field, get down into field goal range.
57:11This is a two-play game right now.
57:13They can throw the ball once, call timeout fast and still have
57:16two seconds to go.
57:18Jay Feeley on field goal departments coming in 11 of 12
57:22of the season.
57:23And don't forget, he's hit one from 55.
57:27So Chandler with two timeouts remaining, but just nine seconds
57:30on the clock.
57:36Well, what a second quarter.
57:44Very quiet in the Georgia Dome.
57:46Three wide out set from the gun.
57:48Chandler steps up, throws across the middle.
57:51At the 40, they're going to whistle for a timeout.
57:54And two seconds to go.
57:57Now at this point, this is too far for a field goal.
57:59This would be a 57-yard field goal from here.
58:0258.
58:03You know what?
58:04Feeley's still going to come in.
58:05He's going to try it then.
58:06Boy, I tell you.
58:07That's a long ways.
58:09He hit, as I mentioned, from 55.
58:11Against Arizona.
58:14Well, this one's going to be about 58.
58:18Trevor, you long snap.
58:19You've been in this position before.
58:21Talk about dome versus outside conditions.
58:24Long snapping is great because the weather's perfect.
58:26The problem with kicking off of any dome or any conditions here
58:30is that this ball is going to have to get drilled out low.
58:32So the key is for the tackle guard, center guard tackle,
58:38interior line of Atlanta's field goal protection team,
58:41they can't get pushed back.
58:43Because if they do, the ball's coming out low,
58:45and they're likely to get knocked down.
58:47Also, it's on the paint of the Falcon at midfield.
58:50Officially, this will be from 58.
58:53Jay Feeley.
58:54High snap.
58:56It came out low, and it stays low.
59:00Short.
59:01And we've played two quarters at the Georgia dome.
59:0517 unanswered points by New England,
59:09and that ends the first half of play.
59:11New England 17-7 over Atlanta.
59:13Jim Nance will be along from New York
