00:00:00CBS4 welcomes you to the following presentation of the National Football League.
00:00:13It's been a remarkable season for Bill Belichick's New England Patriots.
00:00:16A season of defying expectations.
00:00:18A season which has gained momentum with each passing week.
00:00:22Holy smoke!
00:00:23David Patrick has been ascended!
00:00:26Buckley!
00:00:28And he wins!
00:00:31Patriots win!
00:00:33Quarterback Tom Brady has led this amazing turnaround.
00:00:35The Patriots have won four straight, and now they challenge for the AFC East crown.
00:00:41The players have bought into what Coach Belichick has been preaching for the last year and a half,
00:00:45and that's to be tough, to be disciplined, to be mentally aware of the situation,
00:00:49to never defeat yourself out there.
00:00:52Today, they face the Miami Dolphins, who are vying for their second straight division title,
00:00:56sparked by their dominating defense and Jason Taylor.
00:01:00Tough, aggressive, relentless, enthusiastic, energetic, and we love what we do.
00:01:08Combined with their offensive stars, the Dolphins, too, aim for victory in this showdown for AFC East supremacy.
00:01:15Next.
00:01:22New England Patriots
00:01:38You won't find a bigger game on the calendar than the one on tap here in New England today.
00:01:43The 9-4 Miami Dolphins, the 9-5 New England Patriots.
00:01:49Hi, everyone. Welcome to Foxboro. Along with Phil Simms, I'm Greg Gumbel.
00:01:53Very simply, the AFC East is up for grabs today, and the winner here takes a giant step forward.
00:01:59Look at the numbers. The Dolphins and Patriots neck and neck atop the division.
00:02:03Miami clinches a playoff berth with a win. New England will try to prevent that,
00:02:07and Phil, the Patriots' turnaround this season coincides with the advent of second-year quarterback Tom Brady,
00:02:13who's won nine of his 12 starts.
00:02:15Not bad being 9-3, a second-year player, a first-year starter.
00:02:19Tom Brady coming in for one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League.
00:02:23Andrew Bledsoe, he has supplied leadership for this football team, even though it's only a second year,
00:02:29but maybe the biggest thing, Greg, only 10 interceptions in those 12 starts.
00:02:33That's the reason why they're winning.
00:02:34On the other side of the field, the Miami offense has been up and down,
00:02:37but there is no question about the Dolphin defense, which ranks third overall in the NFL.
00:02:42Yeah, they do a good job. They're good and solid, Greg,
00:02:44and one of the reasons why they don't have to gamble on defense is because of people like Zach Thomas.
00:02:49Zach Thomas and the defensive linemen, the linebackers, do such a good job at stopping the run,
00:02:54it allows the secondary not to have to cover people too long.
00:02:58Patrick Sertain, good cover corner, and Sam Madison, one of the best in the NFL,
00:03:03they're the reasons why this defense is solid, and it's going to be a tough test for the Patriots' offense.
00:03:09When these teams met in October, Miami won by 20, but the location is different today,
00:03:15and the stakes are much, much higher.
00:03:17The kickoff from Foxborough is coming right up.
00:03:25It is a clear day in New England and fairly chilly at 34 degrees,
00:03:30and our forecast is for a mostly sunny afternoon.
00:03:32Let's go downstairs to our man on the sideline, Garmin Kassanian.
00:03:35Thank you, Greg.
00:03:36When Bill Belichick saw that weather forecast yesterday, he had one word for it.
00:03:40Perfect.
00:03:41Just the kind of weather his team practices and plays in all the time.
00:03:44He hopes the kind of weather, as it kind of gets cooler today, that might throw Jay Fiedler off his game.
00:03:50Well, speaking of weather, the most famous game here, as this guy goes right through,
00:03:541982, the snowplow game where Mark Henderson drove that tractor on the field,
00:03:58setting up the game-winning field goal.
00:04:01Well, earlier today, they reenacted that famous moment as Mark Henderson, on that same tractor,
00:04:07drove out onto the field to some wild cheers.
00:04:10An end of an era here in Foxborough.
00:04:12Another era next season.
00:04:14The Patriots move into a brand-new, privately financed, $325 million stadium.
00:04:20A tribute to the owner, Robert Kraft.
00:04:22Greg, back to you.
00:04:23All right, Armin, and that stadium right next door will have shots of it throughout the afternoon.
00:04:30The Dolphins have won the toss they have elected to receive,
00:04:32and we are underway as this one rolls down and into the end zone for the touchback.
00:04:38And so the Dolphins will begin first and ten at their own 20-yard line
00:04:42as Jay Fiedler comes out onto the field.
00:04:45Intercepted three times, sacked six times in the loss to San Francisco last week,
00:04:50those three picks bringing him up to 18 on the season.
00:04:54Well, Greg, we talked to Jay Fiedler last night,
00:04:56and I think one of his best qualities as a quarterback in this league is he has a short memory.
00:05:01I asked him, I said, What about the three interceptions last week?
00:05:04Did it bother you as the week started?
00:05:06He goes, Nope.
00:05:07When I got off the plane coming back from San Francisco, it was over.
00:05:11That's the way he is.
00:05:15Right off the bat, on the ground, Lamar Smith.
00:05:21The Miami offensive line, it's had injuries this year.
00:05:24Tim Ruddy, he's the leader at center.
00:05:27In the backfield with Lamar Smith is Rob Conrad.
00:05:30Chris Chambers starts for Aranda Gadsden, who will not play today,
00:05:34with a bothersome left hamstring.
00:05:36McKnight is the other wide, and there you see the head coach, Dave Wanstead.
00:05:43Second and six.
00:05:48Lamar Smith again, trying to pop it out to the right side, and he doesn't get there.
00:05:52Bobby Hamilton wraps him up.
00:05:54Let's check that New England defense.
00:05:57Across the front, Hamilton, Brandon Mitchell, the outstanding rookie,
00:06:00Richard Seymour, and Anthony Pleasant.
00:06:03The linebackers for the Patriots, Teddy Frewski, number 54.
00:06:06He's everywhere.
00:06:07He's having an outstanding year.
00:06:09Fine secondary here in New England with Law and Otis Smith at the corners
00:06:13to Bucky Jones and Lawyer Malloy are the safeties,
00:06:16and the head man here in New England who has turned this thing around,
00:06:20Bill Belichick.
00:06:24Third and five.
00:06:31Beadle pulls it down and runs.
00:06:33Up the middle, is hit short of the 30-yard line, not enough for the first down.
00:06:39So Bucky Jones and Richard Seymour track him down.
00:06:43Well, we got some good sound on the field today, I think,
00:06:45but the one thing, a couple things that this Patriots defense does,
00:06:49they're very good on third down passing situations
00:06:52because they do a lot of different things on defense.
00:06:55But their main goal today, third and five and less,
00:06:58do not let Jay Fiedler run up the middle for the first downs.
00:07:02They had two players there that time, and they stopped it.
00:07:04Troy Brown is deep for the kick from Matt Turk.
00:07:10Not very far at all, and he's down inside the 40-yard line.
00:07:16And on to the field will come Tom Brady.
00:07:20As we said, nine and three since coming on in relief of an injured Drew Bledsoe
00:07:24earlier in the season.
00:07:26And his numbers, very impressive, Bill.
00:07:28Yeah, they are.
00:07:29But, Greg, you know, a lot of talk up here.
00:07:31He struggled the last couple weeks because the numbers are not outstanding.
00:07:35Look, that's the way it is for every quarterback in this league.
00:07:38But we said something to Tom Brady about it this week, and what did he tell us?
00:07:41He goes, Charlie Weiss, the offensive coordinator,
00:07:44he said he brought me in his office and he gave me a tongue lashing.
00:07:47So it kind of stamped him out of everything,
00:07:49and I think Tom Brady feels good about this game.
00:07:54From the New England 38, Brady the throw on first down,
00:07:57right over the middle and complete out to the 45-yard line
00:08:00to Kevin Faulk coming out of the backfield.
00:08:04The New England offensive line, they put it together this year.
00:08:07Damian Woody, got to watch him today, very active as a center.
00:08:11In the backfield, Antoine Smith and Mark Edwards.
00:08:14Troy Brown, an outstanding receiver, along with David Patton.
00:08:18Rod Rutledge is the tight end.
00:08:21Here is Charlie Weiss.
00:08:23He is the tongue lashing variety.
00:08:28On second and three.
00:08:31The pitch and the reverse.
00:08:34Here comes Troy Brown, and Brown's going to go back the other way.
00:08:39He gets the block, tries to turn the corner,
00:08:43and it's close to midfield.
00:08:45Jermaine Haley tracked him down.
00:08:48Well, this is just Troy Brown making the play
00:08:51because the Miami Dolphins, they said early,
00:08:54we're going to be alert for all the gadgets
00:08:56that the New England Patriots like to run,
00:08:58and they had people in position to make the play.
00:09:01Some good blocks in the backside.
00:09:04Moreland Greenwood gets blocked.
00:09:08Troy Brown, a receiver, when they run the football,
00:09:11I don't know if he's alert or just scared right there when you look at those eyes.
00:09:15I think alert's the better word.
00:09:17On first down, trying the left side is Antoine Smith.
00:09:22Let's check the Miami defense.
00:09:24Kenny Mixon, Tim Bowens, Jermaine Haley, Jason Taylor, familiar front four.
00:09:29The linebackers for the Dolphins, Zach Thomas, he is a tackling machine.
00:09:33In the secondary, Patrick Sertain had surgery on the little finger of his left hand,
00:09:38but he's out there with Sam Madison on the corner, Brock Marion,
00:09:41and Brian Walker are the safeties.
00:09:44Defensive coordinator Jim Bates calls a defensive call for Miami.
00:09:49And straight ahead inside the 45-yard line to about the 43 was Antoine Smith.
00:09:58Pick up the five, and it'll be third and two.
00:10:00Oh, Antoine Smith, you look at him, number 32.
00:10:03I think he's one of the biggest reasons why this Patriots team has turned it around
00:10:07from early in the year, and especially from last year.
00:10:10Bill Belichick told us, he says, I went out this offseason,
00:10:14I knew I needed a powerful big runner.
00:10:17Antoine Smith became available in June when the Bills let him go,
00:10:21and they picked him up immediately the day after.
00:10:26Straight ahead inside the 40-yard line on the first down for New England.
00:10:32Derek Rogers made the stop, but Antoine Smith, as you said, Phil,
00:10:35Buffalo just let him go, and what a terrific time for the Patriots.
00:10:40Well, you know, you always got to find a place or an offense that suits you.
00:10:44I think Antoine Smith has found that right here.
00:10:46And when you look at this Miami defense today,
00:10:49they have been just average when it comes to stopping the other team's run game of late.
00:10:55And we saw Smith that time going up in the middle where Daryl Gardner used to be
00:11:00for the Dolphins and getting the first down.
00:11:03Brady to Crowe, pulls him down, now looks outside,
00:11:06and took Vincent inside the 35 to Troy Brown.
00:11:11Out of bounds at about the 32-yard line,
00:11:13and here is a young man who has really picked up his game this season
00:11:17in the wake of all the problems on and off the field with Terry Glynn.
00:11:21Plenty of time to get open.
00:11:24You know, Troy Brown, a lot of people don't know the name,
00:11:27the Miami Dolphins do, and the best respect you can give as a player,
00:11:31Dave Wonset said last night, we're going to know where he's at,
00:11:35and when we need to, we're going to double-team him to take him out of their office today.
00:11:39Here's the first man through, Edwards, and Edwards pulls his way to the 30-yard line,
00:11:43and Wonset appears to be about a yard shy of a first down.
00:11:46You know, Greg, you look at this game, the start of it,
00:11:50we do games every week in the National Football League,
00:11:53usually just before the game starts, the fans are just filling up the stadium.
00:11:57Today, this stadium was full way before the start of the game.
00:12:02Everybody anticipated it, and Dave Wonset was worried about really one thing.
00:12:07He wants his team to get off to a good start,
00:12:10especially when in a row here in this stadium where the fans are a factor.
00:12:14Keep the crowd out of it early on, on third and one.
00:12:17Right on the left side for a first down, and much more,
00:12:20as Antoine Smith still on his feet inside the 20-yard line.
00:12:26Not a good sign.
00:12:28It's not only that you run the ball and you get a first down,
00:12:33it's that you run it in, and once your players make contact,
00:12:37the Dolphins make contact, let's just watch.
00:12:40There's about five, seven, maybe eight yards,
00:12:45but the enthusiasm, the effort by the Patriots offensive players
00:12:50right now is greater than the one Miami is putting out.
00:12:53First down at the 19-yard line.
00:12:57Brady throws outside, complete to the tight end Jermaine Wiggins.
00:13:02And Moreland Greenwood there for the stop after a three-yard pickup,
00:13:06and it'll be second and seven.
00:13:08Yeah, we just saw, I think, a real big key, too, for Miami's defense there.
00:13:12New England, and Greg, we watched it.
00:13:15They throw a lot of short passes, and the key for the Dolphins' defense,
00:13:20OK, let him complete two-yard passes, just make sure you make the tackle,
00:13:24and that's what's hurt the Dolphins' defense,
00:13:27and the opponents of the Patriots, the Patriots get short passes
00:13:31and make good runs afterwards.
00:13:33Smith looking for running room and up the middle,
00:13:36and gets it to the 16-yard line.
00:13:39Zach Thomas, Moreland Greenwood in on the stop.
00:13:43Remember, this Miami defense in their first meeting held New England
00:13:46to 147 total yards.
00:13:48Yeah, but you know, that was like six years ago.
00:13:51That was week four of the NFL season, and so much has changed.
00:13:55Some of the players have changed.
00:13:57The styles, you know, the Dolphins,
00:14:00they thought they were one of the best teams that leagued in.
00:14:02They've proven it.
00:14:03They're pretty good at nine and four.
00:14:04But the Patriots, so much better
00:14:06and so much more diversified since that time.
00:14:09J.R. Redman onto the field and into the backfield now,
00:14:12and Brady drops back and throws outside.
00:14:14It's a patrick pass, and pass looking for first down yardage is close.
00:14:18Not a good spot.
00:14:20It looked like he got past the 10-yard line,
00:14:23but it's going to be fourth in about a yard, a good yard.
00:14:27Linus scrimmages the 10.
00:14:32Oh, they're not.
00:14:35And Bill Belichick looks like he's going to go for it.
00:14:39Yeah, there wasn't any hesitation.
00:14:41I saw Charlie Weiss call into play immediately.
00:14:50And they spotted the ball short of the 10-yard line.
00:14:55Fourth and one.
00:14:59Antoine Smith.
00:15:01No.
00:15:03He didn't get there.
00:15:07Moreland Greenwood led the defensive charge.
00:15:11Everyone on the Miami sideline says we're going the other way,
00:15:14and you know what?
00:15:16They're right.
00:15:17The line drive by New England is halted with 6.05 to play in the first.
00:15:23Well, the Dolphins' defense on fourth and one.
00:15:25They played run all the way.
00:15:27Jermaine Haley, submarines underneath,
00:15:29then Moreland Greenwood and Brock Marion make the tackle.
00:15:35Lamar Smith on first down for the Dolphins, out across the 10.
00:15:38The penalty marker is down.
00:15:43Our first flag of the day after a three-yard pickup,
00:15:45but it's going to bring the play back and put the Dolphins into a deeper hole.
00:15:48What did you think about that fourth down call?
00:15:50Well, I didn't even know.
00:15:51Everything happened so fast.
00:15:52I'm not a second-guesser, but my first thought was kick the field goal.
00:15:55It was fourth and one full yard, and I thought it was important to keep the crowd.
00:16:0266 off the half the distance.
00:16:07Jermaine, first down.
00:16:09I thought it was important to keep the crowd and the emotion
00:16:11and all of it going for your football team.
00:16:14Big gamble by Bill Belichick, but it does not pay off.
00:16:18And I think the biggest thing, Greg, is I watched the replay during commercial.
00:16:22The Dolphins were playing run with everybody.
00:16:27If New England would have thrown it, they were willing to give it up.
00:16:31Bill Belichick obviously looking for even more crowd involvement with a first down
00:16:36and perhaps a touchdown rather than three points on the board.
00:16:39Well, we heard they're going to re-spot this football.
00:16:41They got it in the wrong hash.
00:16:42We heard Dave Wonstad tell us last night his biggest worry, too.
00:16:46He goes, man, New England, they are a fast-starting,
00:16:50tremendous first-half football team, and the stats do bear that out.
00:16:54They score most of their points first half, especially in the second quarter.
00:17:01So first and 15 now for the Dolphins.
00:17:05Steadler still has it, looks downfield, throws,
00:17:08wide open and completes James McKnight, number 80, out across the 25,
00:17:13close to the 30-yard line for a first down.
00:17:19Well, I think we're going to see a different offense today from the Miami Dolphins.
00:17:23When they do throw it, move Jay Fiedler, spread the defense out,
00:17:27or use play-action passes, and that time just a good design,
00:17:31takes advantage of the defense.
00:17:33That's why the receiver, McKnight, is wide open.
00:17:36We were congratulating James McKnight,
00:17:38proud papa of a 6-pound, 6-ounce James Jr. just two days ago.
00:17:43So he needs a road trip to get some rest.
00:17:45You know, that kind of thing as a father.
00:17:47But congratulations to him and, of course, his wife, Lamar Smith.
00:17:52Big hole up the middle across the 35, pulls his way out to the 38-yard line.
00:17:57Lamar Smith enjoyed a terrific day running the football against these Patriots
00:18:02back in October.
00:18:03He had 144 yards rushing.
00:18:05Gosh, I tell you, if you look at some of the Dolphins, they say,
00:18:09man, that's the last time we ran the ball well.
00:18:11Because they have struggled with their running game.
00:18:13They've had injuries, changes at the offensive line.
00:18:16And Lamar Smith, even with all this,
00:18:19is just not having the type of year that he wants.
00:18:22Fumbles have made him a cautious runner at times,
00:18:25but a good start for him today.
00:18:27Lamar Smith re-carries 13 yards on the day.
00:18:30Fiedler going to give it to him again.
00:18:32Lamar Smith out over the 40, and that's enough for a first down.
00:18:35Let's talk a little bit about these warm-weather Miami Dolphins
00:18:38coming up here into the cold weather to play.
00:18:40Well, good start for him here, just avoiding –
00:18:43I'll always say a couple things.
00:18:45When you play in these type of cold games,
00:18:47and if it's your first one of the year, you've got to get used to handling the football.
00:18:51Jay Fiedler said it last –
00:18:54The football absolutely is harder, not as easy to take control of,
00:18:59and it usually affects running backs and wide receivers more than anybody.
00:19:04And someone else.
00:19:08On the reverse, here comes Dedrick Ward.
00:19:11Ward trying to turn the corner is out of bounds at about the 45-yard line.
00:19:14It was interesting to hear both of these coaches in the last couple of days
00:19:18talking about how the other one likes to play tricks so much.
00:19:21Yeah, and Dave Watts said that last night to you.
00:19:24Well, they run all these tricks, and you looked at him and go, and you don't?
00:19:28You run as much as him?
00:19:29You said that to him, and Coach thinks he goes, yeah, you might be right.
00:19:33We might do it as much as the New England Patriots do.
00:19:36But nowadays in this league, you have to run them, and you should.
00:19:40You've got to make the defense always be honest,
00:19:44because the players, if you don't keep them honest, they're too good.
00:19:47They'll make you have a bad day on offense.
00:19:49Lamar Smith trying to reach midfield.
00:19:54Brandon Mitchell, Richard Seymour with the stop up the middle of that New England defense.
00:19:59After a 4-yard pickup, it'll be 3rd and 1.
00:20:01And you know the other thing, Greg?
00:20:05I tell you what, I hope those referees, officials, watch their language today,
00:20:09because I'm hearing every word of it.
00:20:11But this Miami offense, we knew it, and I kind of expected it.
00:20:16Dave Watts told us last night, it's going to be conservative.
00:20:20They're going to manage the game better.
00:20:22Just play it close, and if the game is close in the fourth quarter, that's all they want,
00:20:27because they believe Jay Fiedler can win it for their football team later.
00:20:35Play fake to Smith.
00:20:36The pass is incomplete.
00:20:39Coming up to make the play on Dedrick Ward was Ty Law.
00:20:43Yeah, Dedrick Ward says Ty Law hits him before the throw gets there,
00:20:47but I had a great view of it.
00:20:49It's just a good play by Ty Law.
00:20:51Jay Fiedler just a little bit late with the football.
00:20:55Yes, there was contact.
00:20:57Yes, Watts, it's, I know, you just can't call him up.
00:21:02I did not think, I thought Ty Law was in good position, so there.
00:21:09Troy Brown deep for the kick from Turk.
00:21:11Oh, this one goes nowhere.
00:21:17Troy Brown didn't even have to worry about this one
00:21:19as it floats out of bounds way short of what Matt Turk wanted.
00:21:22We'll be back.
00:21:26The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Southwest Airlines,
00:21:31proud sponsor of the NFL and official airline of Super Bowl XXXVI,
00:21:35American Express, wishing you all the best this holiday season,
00:21:39and by Volkswagen.
00:21:41On the road of life, there are passengers and there are drivers.
00:21:48Welcome back to Foxboro 213 to play in the first quarter,
00:21:51and Tom Brady, who engineered a drive that came up short of the 10-yard line,
00:21:57four out of four on the day, and, you know, as we talked to Tom two days ago
00:22:01and talked to him about the magnitude of this game, he says, you know,
00:22:04the buildup hasn't been as evident because of the short week.
00:22:07Yeah, I think that always helps quarterbacks or players coming off bad weeks
00:22:12or playing a big game.
00:22:13The quicker it gets there, you know, the lesser nerves will become a factor.
00:22:17Brady to throw.
00:22:19An incomplete thrown just behind Troy Brown.
00:22:22His first incompletion of the day and then his second intent.
00:22:25Yeah, just too much pressure on the quarterback.
00:22:27Brady doesn't have enough room to step up and really throw the football accurately
00:22:32and kind of fortunate that it didn't get him in trouble.
00:22:35You know, one of the interesting things about Tom Brady
00:22:37is he took over for Drew Bledsoe.
00:22:38Everyone wondered whether or not he was prepared to play,
00:22:41and there is Drew Bledsoe on the side.
00:22:43Brady said, you know, I probably played
00:22:45and threw more passes before the season began than Drew did.
00:22:48Yeah, in the preseason, he really got a lot of work,
00:22:51and it's a good thing they worked their backup quarterback well
00:22:54because it's served him well.
00:22:55The quick pass.
00:22:57That one is incomplete.
00:23:00Looks like he might have hit Mike Thompson in the back.
00:23:03Yeah, that just was a blow up from the start,
00:23:06and, boy, we heard it too last night.
00:23:08Zach Thomas says, we have got to stop their screens.
00:23:12They do so many of them.
00:23:14And in the NFL, to stop screens, your defensive linemen have got to know
00:23:19when they're going to the quarterback, you've got to say,
00:23:21I'm not that good of a pass rusher, so something's wrong here.
00:23:24Stop and look at the screen play.
00:23:26The Dolphins were all over it that time.
00:23:30So it's third and ten now,
00:23:32and Brady and the Patriots go with five wide receivers,
00:23:36and Brady out of the shotgun.
00:23:41Zach Thomas rushing away and now in pursuit.
00:23:44The pass is incomplete as Brady was on the move.
00:23:47Good job by the Dolphins, and Zach Thomas, what he is is a blitzer.
00:23:53He's sneaky.
00:23:54That's just the best way to say it.
00:23:56He just doesn't line up and take off.
00:23:58Watch number 54.
00:23:59He waits and lets you commit to your blockers or to who you're going to block,
00:24:04and then he shoots right at the quarterback,
00:24:06forces Brady out to the incompletion.
00:24:09Timing, that's the most important thing about blitzing.
00:24:13Jeff Ogden deep for the kick from Ken Walter.
00:24:18Beautiful.
00:24:20Ogden from the 22.
00:24:24Gets tangled up short of the 35-yard line.
00:24:30Bumped into his own man.
00:24:31The clock has stopped.
00:24:33148 to play in the first.
00:24:34We're scoreless in New England.
00:24:38The NFL on CBS is sponsored by TLC's Robotica
00:24:44and by Pizza Hut, where every week this fall,
00:24:47you can get one of our pizzas for an unbelievable price.
00:24:55And happy holidays to you and yours from all of us here at CBS Sports
00:25:00as we continue from Foxboro in the final minutes of the first quarter
00:25:06of a scoreless game.
00:25:08Lamar Smith in a double tight end setup for Jay Keebler on first down.
00:25:19Keebler down the middle.
00:25:21Has his man.
00:25:22That's complete to Jeff Weaver.
00:25:23Loose football.
00:25:27And it's gone over.
00:25:33You have to wait in this day in the NFL of whether a pass is ruled complete
00:25:38and then fumbled or not.
00:25:41But Keebler was on the money.
00:25:45Forces out of his control have New England back in charge,
00:25:48and we'll be right back.
00:25:49That's referee Jeff Triplett,
00:25:59and the Miami Dolphins have challenged whether or not this was a completion
00:26:02and a fumble.
00:26:03Let's go back and look.
00:26:04Well, watch the completion.
00:26:06Weaver catches it.
00:26:08In what is ruled a complete pass in the National Football League,
00:26:12it's not getting your feet to the ground.
00:26:14It's catching the football.
00:26:16And do you make a football move?
00:26:18And to my eye, complete control by Jed Weaver.
00:26:21And as he turns around, he is now making his initial move with the football.
00:26:26Then to Bucky Jones, hits him, knocks it out.
00:26:29Otis Smith recovers.
00:26:32And, you know, as you said earlier,
00:26:34the New England Patriots want to get the ball into Jay Fiedler's hand
00:26:37because they're looking for the turnovers.
00:26:39But that one was at the opposite end of the play.
00:26:42Jay Fiedler made a pretty good pass.
00:26:43Oh, pretty good.
00:26:44It was a terrific pass.
00:26:46Watch what Jay Fiedler throws over the top of one linebacker in front of to
00:26:51Bucky Jones,
00:26:55who makes just a solid hit to the body that knocks it out.
00:26:59Now, the big question is, the longer this goes,
00:27:02what's that tell you?
00:27:03That there's some doubt in the mind of Jeff Triplett.
00:27:07And again, as we said, these days in the NFL,
00:27:10a referee would really like to take a look at it from every angle before he
00:27:14goes out there and renders a decision.
00:27:16Yeah, that's right.
00:27:17No matter what decision he makes,
00:27:18it's going to really get half the people mad.
00:27:23Well, here's Jeff Triplett about to make half some people mad.
00:27:27After reviewing the play, the receiver caught the ball one foot down,
00:27:33the second foot down, and turns and hit by the defender.
00:27:38Therefore, it is a catch, fumble, recovered by New England.
00:27:43The ruling on the field stands.
00:27:45Miami is charged a timeout.
00:27:48And in that description of what happened,
00:27:51Jeff Triplett answering every question that Dave Wonstadt would have asked him
00:27:54on the sideline after he was finished.
00:27:56And you know what?
00:27:57You know what's good?
00:27:58It answers the questions to all the people at home,
00:28:00to the people in the stands.
00:28:02You know, excellent job, Jeff Triplett.
00:28:06Jeff Triplett walking into our truck before the game today,
00:28:09looking to be one of the brave souls of this sport.
00:28:11I like that.
00:28:15Don't worry about the cold weather.
00:28:16Antoine Smith in the backfield.
00:28:18As we come up on a minute and a half to play here in the first quarter.
00:28:21Brady second page of the play.
00:28:24Brady passed out here, incomplete, intended for Jermaine Wiggins.
00:28:29And look at Jason Taylor.
00:28:31And what was Zach Thomas telling us about how well Jason Taylor plays the screen pass?
00:28:35Well, I think Jason Taylor is he – what has happened to Jason Taylor over the
00:28:39last couple years, he is just a football player.
00:28:43When he first came to the league, tall, fast,
00:28:45all he did was rush the quarterback and get sacks.
00:28:48But now he can play the run.
00:28:50He hustles.
00:28:51He's in position.
00:28:52And, you know, you hear this a lot, but he is absolutely a Pro Bowl player.
00:28:57One of the best.
00:29:02Brady the pro on second intent.
00:29:04He'll try to screen out here again.
00:29:05And this one is complete for Troy Brown.
00:29:07And Brown inside the 45 to the 43.
00:29:10Oh, and what a – hey, you know,
00:29:12you usually say what a throw when you throw it down the field 20 yards.
00:29:15But Tom Brady, watch how he has to drop the football over the head of Jason.
00:29:21Taylor reads it and just misses it.
00:29:25Well, if I was a Patriot, I'd be a little careful about some of these screens
00:29:28because it looks like that is really on the minds of the Miami Dolphins defense.
00:29:35Third down.
00:29:36Tom Brady.
00:29:38Just one out of his last five.
00:29:40Kevin Faulk in the backfield alongside Brady.
00:29:43And the shot going on third and one.
00:29:45And it's to Faulk.
00:29:46And Faulk turns and throws it back for Brady.
00:29:49He's there.
00:29:50Inside the 25-yard line for a first down.
00:29:56Well, so many times the Patriots run gimmick plays or plays that are different.
00:30:02The Miami Dolphins think, hey, it's a snap to Faulk
00:30:05or they give it to him coming around the end.
00:30:08Tom Brady watching catch it and go around.
00:30:10Watch the defense react.
00:30:14They snap it to Faulk.
00:30:16Nobody plays the quarterback.
00:30:18That would be the responsibility of the defensive end on that side most of the time.
00:30:25Nice fake by Brady.
00:30:28And a perfect throw and not an easy catch really for the quarterback.
00:30:33Inside the 10, inside the five.
00:30:36It will be first and goal.
00:30:39Brian Walker saved the touchdown after the 19-yard game.
00:30:43That pass to the quarterback could be a game changer.
00:30:47Perfect time and a perfect execution by the New England Patriots.
00:30:51We have come to the end of a scoreless first quarter,
00:30:54but it finds the Patriots threatening.
00:30:56We'll go to the other end of the field.
00:30:58Second quarter from Foxborough coming up right after this.
00:31:05Tom Brady was wide open on this throwback to the quarterback.
00:31:08Look at Sam Madison.
00:31:10He goes across the field covering the receiver,
00:31:12so there's nobody out there for Tom Brady.
00:31:15And really when you run trick plays, the key is,
00:31:18and I don't mean trick plays, not a good different plays,
00:31:21the key is making sure you call them at exactly the right time,
00:31:25and that's what the Patriots did there.
00:31:26Charlie White, perfect timing, third and short,
00:31:29caught the defense chasing the runner.
00:31:31Number 93, the defensive tackle, Richard Seymour in a blocking back,
00:31:34Antron Smith follows in, touchdown.
00:31:40Boy, Richard Seymour, number 93, defensive tackle, turned fullback,
00:31:46did a good job that time leading the runner.
00:31:56Who was the most pumped guy on the field?
00:31:58It was Tom Brady who was ecstatic.
00:32:01The Patriots have been really, really good at running the football
00:32:05into the end zone once they get inside the 10-yard line.
00:32:11Antron Smith, sixth touchdown in his last five games,
00:32:13Adam Vinatieri adds the extra point.
00:32:17Dave Wonstad didn't want to see it, but the Patriots grab the early lead
00:32:21and excited Tom Brady is on top.
00:32:24We'll be back.
00:32:27The Patriots have been outstanding in the first half,
00:32:30even more so in the second quarter this season.
00:32:34Antron Smith, two-yard touchdown run, adds them up 7-0,
00:32:37and look at this short kick.
00:32:39Fair catch called for and made of a 29-yard line.
00:32:45While we have this opportunity,
00:32:47I remind you coming up on the next tele-halftime report,
00:32:49Jim, Mike, Randy, and Jerry, first half analysis, latest NFL news,
00:32:53with Seattle quarterback Matt Hasselbeck,
00:32:56maybe a little VH1 visit from Marcus Allen.
00:32:59All of that coming up on the next tele-halftime report.
00:33:02Did you hear Marcus singing in the pregame show?
00:33:04Yes, I did.
00:33:05It takes a lot of courage to sing on national TV.
00:33:09That's a good job by Marcus.
00:33:15Touchdown on the 29-yard line.
00:33:24Lamar Smith, not much there.
00:33:29A pickup of one.
00:33:30Let's go to Arvin.
00:33:31You know, Greg, one of the nice things about this time of year
00:33:33is things can get pretty simple down here on the football field.
00:33:36Zach Thomas telling us yesterday,
00:33:38it's really time to fight fire with fire physically in order to win this game.
00:33:42But I really remember what Brian Cox said.
00:33:44He said, you know what, it's time to stand up and be like a man.
00:33:48We got beat physically the first time.
00:33:50We're not going to let it happen again.
00:33:52And right now, New England is winning this game physically on both sides of the ball.
00:33:57Back to you.
00:33:58Yeah, Arvin, Brian Cox was talking as we see Lamar Smith with the handoff again
00:34:02and doesn't get much there.
00:34:04Brian Cox was very, very plain.
00:34:07He said, they just kicked us around the last time we played them,
00:34:10and I just want to see if they can do it again.
00:34:12Did he say it like that?
00:34:13No.
00:34:15I said, how you doing, Brian?
00:34:17He goes, well, I only play about eight plays a game, so I am fresh and ready to go.
00:34:21But what he does, he brings emotion.
00:34:24He is a tremendous competitor, a hard hitter.
00:34:27So when he comes in, I think he's going to play more than eight plays a day.
00:34:30But when he comes in, he brings a lift to the defense.
00:34:34Travis Miner and Rob Conrad as Fiedler goes to the shotgun on third and eight.
00:34:44Pulls it down, on the move, throws out here, incomplete, intended for Conrad.
00:34:50And under pressure in the backfield, the Dolphins go out.
00:34:55Well, you know, you hear this every week from mocks and announcers and coaches,
00:34:59you want to get the other team in third down and really passing situations.
00:35:04But the Dolphins, their strength is not doing that.
00:35:07Third and eight, very hard to pick it up, especially when you keep Jay Fiedler in the pocket.
00:35:16In four possessions, Miami has managed to get two first downs.
00:35:20You'd have heard a better job of kicking it in this direction, Troy Brown from the 20.
00:35:27Just across the 25-yard line.
00:35:3149-yard punt, five-yard return, Andron Smith celebrating the game's only touchdown so far.
00:35:42On behalf of the Miami Dolphins, we would like to take this time to wish all of our military personnel
00:35:47a very happy holiday season, and thank you for protecting our freedom.
00:35:52Happy holidays.
00:35:58Thank you, Coach, and we, of course, add our best wishes and thanks for happy holidays.
00:36:08The Patriots, first down of their own 27, the pitch for Antoine Smith.
00:36:12Smith cuts it back across the 30, 35, and 40, and there he goes.
00:36:18Dragged down inside the 30-yard line.
00:36:21Patrick Sertain made the saving tackle, and Zach Thomas told us on the pitch to Antoine Smith,
00:36:27he loves to cut back behind his lead man.
00:36:30That's what he did. You think the play is going to go outside.
00:36:34Watch Damian Woody, the center.
00:36:36He gets on Zach Thomas, gets him out of the play, knocks him down, and then Antoine Smith.
00:36:44Look, I know he's fast, but it looks like, watch Woody, 65, coming around, makes the block, stays with it,
00:36:50knocks Zach Thomas to the ground, and nobody there to pick it up.
00:36:5645 yards on the play as Antoine Smith goes over 1,000 yards on the season.
00:37:0221 is J.R. Redmond and his carry. It'll be second down.
00:37:06Yeah, a couple things. You know, Damian Woody, number 65 at center,
00:37:10we heard Zach Thomas say it, he pulls on runs more than any center he's seen in the league,
00:37:16does a very good job of finding the blockers, yeah, the defensive players,
00:37:22and blocks them and allows Antoine Smith to make those good runs.
00:37:26Damian Woody, the number one draft pick in 1999 in his third year out of Boston College,
00:37:32has developed into a formidable center.
00:37:34Now you see Mike Compton, 77, is now the center.
00:37:38He does the shotgun snap.
00:37:42With all kinds of time, the throw is complete and now incomplete.
00:37:46And a penalty marker is down.
00:37:51Well, that was a good job by Tom Brady, not letting the original throw go.
00:37:56Pass was intended for Jerry Glenn.
00:38:00This looks to be a call on Patrick Sertain.
00:38:03Pass interference, defense, number 22.
00:38:10Patrick Sertain, number 23.
00:38:15I tell you, you know, he should yell.
00:38:21He's on him the whole way. He actually makes the quarterback double clutch.
00:38:26And Patrick Sertain had surgery, I think, on Monday.
00:38:32And now has his hand wrapped today and still playing.
00:38:35This is Antoine Smith changing direction.
00:38:39To about the 23-yard line, a pickup of two, and it'll be second and eight.
00:38:43Now, you know, the San Francisco 49ers last week just lined up and ran the football at will
00:38:50the whole game against this Miami Dolphins defense,
00:38:53so Miami knows. They knew coming into this game,
00:38:56Patriots watch the film, that's what the Patriots want to do.
00:38:59And it's got to be a little demoralizing, the fact that the Patriots have come out
00:39:03and run the ball so well early in the game.
00:39:06Look at that. Last week, they gave up 160-yard rushing.
00:39:10Brady.
00:39:11Quick pass out here, comes in to pass.
00:39:13Pass, to the 10, to the 5, a shoot!
00:39:16Great pass!
00:39:18Shoot!
00:39:25Wrong assignment by the Dolphins defense.
00:39:28Look at Brady.
00:39:29Patrick Cass scores his first touchdown of the season.
00:39:34If you score a touchdown, you better watch out,
00:39:36because you're going to take a beating from Tom Brady.
00:39:38But the Dolphins blitz, everybody comes, nobody covers the back out of the backfield.
00:39:48Not only is that the first touchdown of the season for Patrick Cass,
00:39:51it's the first of his career.
00:39:59Vinatieri for the extra point.
00:40:05The New England Patriots stay strong in the second quarter.
00:40:08It's a 14-0 lead.
00:40:10Patrick Cass was Patrick Catch for the touchdown.
00:40:18The NFL on CBS is sponsored by DirecTV.
00:40:22The number one digital satellite entertainment provider.
00:40:25Miller Highline.
00:40:26To live simply, proudly, boldly, manly.
00:40:29This is the Highline.
00:40:31And by the Honda Accord.
00:40:32It's advanced, it's roomy, it's the Accord.
00:40:40Remember New England's initial 12-play drive
00:40:42coming up short of the scoreboard at the 10-yard line.
00:40:44Now just four plays and five plays,
00:40:46and it results in touchdowns within a four-minute span.
00:40:51From the 13-yard line, Chris Chambers.
00:40:5325, 30, short of the 30.
00:40:56Back outside and brought down at about the 27 by Matt Chatham.
00:41:00Let's go back to the touchdown.
00:41:01Let's take a look at it.
00:41:02Here's the halfback pass comes out.
00:41:04Look at the blitz by the Miami linebackers,
00:41:07and none of the safeties come and cover the fullback.
00:41:12In fact, the Dolphins players running into each other,
00:41:15the tight end, Jermaine Wiggins,
00:41:18he's wide open for a touchdown, too.
00:41:20So they weren't even in position to cover the play,
00:41:24and even the ones that were got picked up.
00:41:30Tom Brady had not thrown a touchdown pass
00:41:32in his last three games, gets one here.
00:41:34The give straight ahead to Mar Smith,
00:41:36and Smith pulls his way out across the 30
00:41:40to about the 33 or 34-yard line.
00:41:42Richard Seymour.
00:41:43Everybody has been talking about Richard Seymour,
00:41:46the sixth-round draft pick out of Georgia.
00:41:50First-round draft pick.
00:41:51I'm sorry, first-round draft pick.
00:41:52You were close.
00:41:55Well, they look at Richard Seymour.
00:41:57You know, Greg Wright, we talked about him.
00:41:58He plays fullback down on the goal line,
00:42:01but Bill Belichick, what's really got him excited up here,
00:42:04he's 6'6", and for a tall person,
00:42:07very powerful and explosive.
00:42:09You usually don't hear those words
00:42:11about tall defensive linemen.
00:42:13Quick pass out on second and four is incomplete
00:42:15and sent it for James McKnight.
00:42:20You know, I look at this as a big series.
00:42:22The Dolphins just need to stop the rhythm
00:42:26that the Patriots offense has got,
00:42:28and you do that by letting your offense
00:42:30pick up a couple first downs
00:42:31and let your defense rest and get its thoughts back about them.
00:42:35And Kane Galey, third in this situation,
00:42:38he's got to be alert for almost everything
00:42:40because that's what you get from the Patriots on third down.
00:42:43Well, these Miami Dolphins are used to winning
00:42:45against New England.
00:42:46They've won five straight during the regular season,
00:42:49six out of seven and 19 out of 25.
00:42:52They're down two touchdowns here.
00:42:55Fiedler down the sideline.
00:42:57That is incomplete, intended for McKnight.
00:43:02And it looked like Jay Fiedler looked around
00:43:05to see if perhaps the sun would have been a factor.
00:43:07Yeah, I think he was because when he let it go,
00:43:10McKnight was open, it looked perfect,
00:43:12and got nothing out of it.
00:43:15Throwing against the next Dolphin,
00:43:17Terrell Buckley was on the coverage.
00:43:21Well, they're going to make them,
00:43:22as I've seen this game so far.
00:43:24They are going to make Jay Fiedler,
00:43:26especially on third down, throw it outside,
00:43:29cover it inside very well.
00:43:34From the 23-yard line, short of ground,
00:43:37down to the 33.
00:43:39So we are under 10 minutes to play
00:43:42in the first half of the New England ball
00:43:44when we come back.
00:43:48We remind you, you can log on to winnifel.com,

00:44:01You've got to admit, Greg,
00:44:02it's a pretty good look for a football game.
00:44:04You look at the stands, not an empty seat,
00:44:07everybody in Patriot colors,
00:44:09and they're having fun so far.
00:44:12Yeah, well, it's just fun to be here
00:44:13in situations like this.
00:44:15Here's Smith,
00:44:16and Smith out across the 35 to the 37,
00:44:19and let's go down to Armand Coutinho.
00:44:21Greg, Antoine Smith is in the game,
00:44:22but he's certainly not 100%.
00:44:24He was just on the sidelines,
00:44:25trainers looking at his lower right leg injury,
00:44:28and obviously he's in a little bit of pain right now.
00:44:31We'll keep an eye on him.
00:44:32Back to you.
00:44:33All right, Armand.
00:44:34So far today, Antoine Smith has 94 yards.
00:44:37He managed just 47 total,
00:44:40rushing against Miami in the first meeting
00:44:42earlier this week.
00:44:47Second and six.
00:44:48Out across the 40,
00:44:50and he's close to another first down.
00:44:53Well, you know, he is so important,
00:44:55and we talk to all coaches about this, Greg.
00:44:57When you're piecing your team together,
00:44:59you really got to have an idea of what you want to do,
00:45:02and Bill Belichick,
00:45:0316 free agents during the offseason,
00:45:06the one thing he knew,
00:45:07they can find ways to create opportunities
00:45:10in the passing game,
00:45:11but to make it simple,
00:45:12he needed a big, powerful back.
00:45:14He needed somebody to get those yards
00:45:17that we don't pay enough attention to,
00:45:19those two- and three-yard gains in certain situations,
00:45:22and Antoine Smith has done it perfectly
00:45:25for this football team.
00:45:26Sixty-seven, Bill.
00:45:28Third and one.
00:45:33Antoine Smith.
00:45:34Antoine Smith pulls to 45 for a first down,
00:45:38and you see the way these Patriots
00:45:40are running the football.
00:45:41No team has been able,
00:45:43well, let's just say it wasn't as easy to do it
00:45:46when Daryl Gardner wasn't in the lineup.
00:45:48He was in the lineup for Miami.
00:45:49I don't care what team you are,
00:45:51when you lose a player like Daryl Gardner,
00:45:53no matter how good your backups are,
00:45:55Daryl Gardner was in there,
00:45:57he protected the linebacker, Zach Thomas,
00:45:59what he did,
00:46:00what he did is he made plays in the backfield,
00:46:03he made runners lose two and three yards,
00:46:05that's something this Miami defense has missed,
00:46:08especially on the inside since he's been out.
00:46:10Play fakes this time,
00:46:11the pass over the middle to a wide open Troy Brown,
00:46:14Brown inside the 40 to the 37-yard line,
00:46:17and that's what the running game will open up.
00:46:19Yeah, you know, Greg, that is not a cliche,
00:46:22especially when you watch it here today.
00:46:24I've said this before,
00:46:26when you can't stop the run,
00:46:28what are you going to do as a defense?
00:46:30You are going to dig in harder
00:46:32to make sure you can stop it,
00:46:34and also your defense has to play zone,
00:46:37because you've got to make sure your players
00:46:39are looking at the runner too,
00:46:40so they can come up and attack.
00:46:42That's why Troy Brown was wide open in the middle.
00:46:44New England dominating play here in the first half.
00:46:47Redmond dodges inside the 30 drive
00:46:51to about the 33-yard line.
00:46:53Antoine Smith is up over 100 yards already,
00:46:56102 yards rushing,
00:46:58as we come up on seven minutes to play in the first half.
00:47:00And you know, the other thing the Patriots do
00:47:03that I really learned,
00:47:05they went out and they got these 16 free agents,
00:47:07none of them what I would call stars,
00:47:09on both sides of the football,
00:47:11you see J.R. Redmond comes in and runs it,
00:47:13on defense, they play everybody,
00:47:17regardless of the situation.
00:47:19The pitch to Redmond.
00:47:21Redmond tries to cut back.
00:47:23Jason Taylor cut that play short
00:47:26after no pickup on the play.
00:47:28It'll be 35.
00:47:30Yeah, Lawyer Malloy was saying what we did was
00:47:32we went out and got guys who wanted to play football
00:47:35and know how to play football.
00:47:37Now we have a penalty marker down.
00:47:44Well, I was looking at the field.
00:47:47I didn't see anything.
00:47:49I saw that yellow flag go up.
00:48:01Unforcement-like conduct.
00:48:0391, defense.
00:48:0615-yard penalty.
00:48:09Automatic first down.
00:48:11That's Lorenzo Bromell.
00:48:18Well, he had to be taunting
00:48:21another player on the Patriots team.
00:48:30Lorenzo Bromell has had his problems this year.
00:48:33He was fined $15,500
00:48:36with a helmet-to-helmet hit on Peyton Manning,
00:48:38and then $12,500 for slamming Chris Wienke to the ground.
00:48:41Well, as I'm watching it,
00:48:43when the Dolphins gave up that first-first down,
00:48:45I saw some of the players.
00:48:47They're upset.
00:48:48They're mad at themselves.
00:48:49They're down 14-0.
00:48:51They can't stop the run,
00:48:52and now they make a big middle mistake.
00:48:54Here's Antoine Smith, right side.
00:48:56And tripped up in the 8-yard line.
00:48:59Brian Walker made the stop,
00:49:01and there's a shoe licking out of the 15-yard line.
00:49:04Antoine Smith lost his left shoe on the play,
00:49:07but ate up 9 yards in the process.
00:49:09Yeah, Jermaine Wiggins makes a good block on the outside.
00:49:13Wide receivers, Troy Brown,
00:49:15another good block, Antoine Smith,
00:49:178 yards before the first defender
00:49:19even gets a hand on him.
00:49:22And Troy Brown.
00:49:25Yep, he can receive it,
00:49:27and he can block, too.
00:49:29Second and one.
00:49:31Second and one.
00:49:34Brady Wolfe throws, complete.
00:49:36Troy Brown.
00:49:37And the penalty marker flies again.
00:49:41I'm just going to guess, if that happened so quick,
00:49:43that's going to be what they call an illegal pick.
00:49:49Pass interference.
00:49:51Offense, number 35.
00:49:5310-yard penalty.
00:49:55Remains second down.
00:49:56Well, that would be Patrick Pence.
00:49:59First penalty against New England today.
00:50:04That happened so fast.
00:50:06Sometimes you see a receiver come wide open.
00:50:09Look to the right of your screen.
00:50:11See if you can see Patrick Pence.
00:50:17On the outside, he's blocking
00:50:20before the football is thrown to the receiver.
00:50:24On second and 11, Brady throwing out that way again,
00:50:27and this one's incomplete to Mark Edwards.
00:50:30That's a big play.
00:50:31I tell you, that penalty now puts the Patriots
00:50:34in a tough situation.
00:50:36If you go down 21 to nothing,
00:50:39I don't care how good you,
00:50:41almost any team in the league,
00:50:42that's too much to overcome in the National Football League.
00:50:45So the Dolphins have a chance to at least hold them to three
00:50:48or a field goal attempt.
00:50:52Line of scrimmage is the 18-yard line,
00:50:55and Brady and the Pats are looking at third and 11.
00:51:07And they're going to run it to the right side
00:51:09with Redmond who cuts it back inside the 15-yard line
00:51:12before he's ganged up upon,
00:51:14and that'll bring the field goal unit on.
00:51:16You know, that's just a good job by the coaches of New England.
00:51:19You manage the football game,
00:51:21and that's what Bill Belichick says,
00:51:23that's what we do.
00:51:24We don't have great talent.
00:51:25We just try to do a lot of little things right.
00:51:28It's third and long.
00:51:29Make the field goal attempt a little easier for your kicker.
00:51:32With two extra points today,
00:51:33Adam Vinatieri has 99 on the season.
00:51:36This would put him over 100
00:51:38and would make him only the second player in NFL history
00:51:42with at least 100 points in each of his first six seasons.
00:51:48From 32 yards out.
00:51:51This.
00:51:53Adam Vinatieri is right up there with Jason Elam
00:51:56in the NFL history books.
00:51:59It's three on the board,
00:52:00makes it a 17-0 New England lead.
00:52:07The NFL on CBS
00:52:09is sponsored by the United States Postal Service
00:52:12and by Remington Microscreen 3 TCT Shaver,
00:52:16a totally close shave even on the tough spots.
00:52:21Welcome back, Foxborough.
00:52:2317-0, New England scoring drive.
00:52:2610 plays, 53 yards, resulting in the Vinatieri field goal.
00:52:35Chambers and Conrad are deep.
00:52:37Oh, and another very short pop-up.
00:52:39Bearcats call for a loss.
00:52:43Patriots are excited on the sideline,
00:52:45but the officials say,
00:52:46Patriots are excited on the sideline,
00:52:48but the officials say Miami has the football,
00:52:50and now they've changed the call.
00:53:00Well, that was just a terrible botch
00:53:02of what should have been an easy catch.
00:53:04Well, the first time I thought maybe the kicker missed it,
00:53:07but that's twice, Greg,
00:53:08so it tells me it's a plan by the Patriots.
00:53:12Short kick, making somebody handle the football
00:53:16that's not used to it.
00:53:20I could not see who missed it.
00:53:22I think it could be Ed Perry.
00:53:25He caught one before, 89.
00:53:28The ball's spinning hard.
00:53:30He has to go forward.
00:53:31The sun's up there, and he misses it.
00:53:34Here's Anjuan Smith.
00:53:35Penalty markers fly as he drives the right side,
00:53:38and that'll bring the clock to a screeching halt at 419.
00:53:50So Jeff Triplett gets the call.
00:53:55Oh, I think they might have 12 players on the field.
00:54:09Illegal substitution.
00:54:1121 defense.
00:54:14The player did not get off the field prior to the snap.
00:54:18Five-yard penalty remains for Sam.
00:54:24Well, part of Dave Blonstadt's message at halftime might be,
00:54:27guys, we can't be this bad in the second half.
00:54:30You know, listen, you got to at least be able to line up.
00:54:33And just, you know, you get down,
00:54:36and you lose last week 21 to nothing,
00:54:39and the Dolphins are letting their emotions get to them.
00:54:43Anjuan Smith across the 35 to the 34.
00:54:49A pickup of three on the play, and it'll be second and two.
00:54:52You know, in situations like this, when you're down,
00:54:55on both sides of the ball, you just got to go.
00:54:58You got to really concentrate and just do your job.
00:55:01Don't try to do more.
00:55:03Don't try to get your football team back in
00:55:05by making a spectacular play, and don't do,
00:55:09and don't commit penalties, which you should avoid.
00:55:13Sounds easy, doesn't it? Very easy.
00:55:16On second and two, Smith.
00:55:18Looks like he has enough for the first down.
00:55:22And, of course, I know we're in the first half, Greg.
00:55:243.20 to go, but the Patriots,
00:55:27boy, they can turn into one patient football team.
00:55:31You know, in this league, if you get, like, one first down
00:55:34or two running the football,
00:55:36you can eat up a half of a quarter on the clock.
00:55:39So the Patriots, they need the football, they need plays,
00:55:42and so their defense has got to get going
00:55:45and stop the New England offense and get out there and bring it out.
00:55:49Well, the Patriots lead by 17.
00:55:50It could be much more than that.
00:55:52One drive came to a halt at the 10-yard line.
00:55:55This is Mark Edwards.
00:55:57And Edwards brought to a stop just short of the 30-yard line
00:56:00as the clock winds down to 2.40,
00:56:03and there's Antoine Smith on the sideline,
00:56:05as Armand Kattan reported earlier,
00:56:07having some problems with his right leg.
00:56:12Yeah, I don't know if his leg is bothering him
00:56:14or if it's just a hard hit or what, Greg.
00:56:19If you ask the Dolphins, he looks fine to us.
00:56:24J.R. Redman is in the backfield, second and eight.
00:56:30To the outside.
00:56:32Edwards out of the backfield.
00:56:35And a penalty marker is down in the backfield.
00:56:39Personal foul.
00:56:43If this was a basketball game, Dave Weinstead could, like,
00:56:46take his starters out and put in the reserves and, you know,
00:56:50change the tempo, but it's not.
00:56:56Personal foul.
00:56:58That's Harry Ruffman, 29, defense.
00:57:01Half the distance.
00:57:03First down, Sam Madison.
00:57:09Sam Madison was talking to us last night
00:57:11and says he'd like to see a little more attitude on the offense
00:57:15the way they have on the defense.
00:57:17Yeah, well, too much attitude going on that defense, too, right now.
00:57:20Way too much.
00:57:23And this is going to take us to the two-minute warning.
00:57:27Coming up in the next Dell Halftime Report, Jim, Mike, Randy, Jerry.
00:57:30First half analysis, latest NFL news.
00:57:32They will visit with Seattle quarterback Matt Hasselbeck
00:57:34all coming up on the next Dell Halftime Report.
00:57:37You know, I look at the halftime crew we got.
00:57:39We got two ex-coaches.
00:57:41I'd want to know, what do you – you know,
00:57:44I saw Dave Weinstead during the timeout.
00:57:46He doesn't know where the scrimmage is.
00:57:48He doesn't know where the scrimmage is.
00:57:50He doesn't know where the scrimmage is.
00:57:52He doesn't know where the scrimmage is.
00:57:54I saw Dave Weinstead during the timeout.
00:57:56He doesn't know where the scrimmage or what to do to these players.
00:58:00And as a coach – what are you telling at halftime?
00:58:03I mean, there's a lot of ways to go here.
00:58:04I would think – look, oh, I can tell looking at that face right now,
00:58:08the head coach, that it might be –
00:58:10He'll wipe out.
00:58:14I know one thing I would think of if I was Miami and the defensive coaches,
00:58:19I would change how I'm playing defense.
00:58:22I would gamble more.
00:58:24I would put everybody up there to stop the run.
00:58:27You've got some of the best corners in the league.
00:58:29Gamble to stop the run and say, hey, look, Sam Madison, Patrick Sertain,
00:58:33you've got to play great in the second half for us
00:58:36because we're going to put you out there all by yourself.
00:58:38Bill Belichick says, you know what Miami can do.
00:58:41They trust their front seven to stop the run,
00:58:43and their safeties are not going to come up and help no matter what.
00:58:47Brady throws, outside, complete, Jermaine Wiggins,
00:58:50and Wiggins goes to the five-yard line before he can wrestle down.
00:58:55You know, just plays like that.
00:58:56When you see a tight end, Jermaine Wiggins catch a football
00:59:00and just the effort, the struggle, and everything he's trying to do
00:59:04to get that extra yard, that tells you what this team is focused
00:59:07and they're going to do whatever it takes to win.
00:59:09We have a dolphin down just inside the ten-yard line, and it is Sam Madison.
00:59:13Boy, Sam Madison fighting a shoulder that's been bothering him.
00:59:16He missed a couple games.
00:59:20Oh, a nice, nice effort by Jermaine Wiggins.
00:59:25His helmet knocked off.
00:59:28And this is, Greg, we're just watching, managing the game right.
00:59:34And another short pass by the Patriots.
00:59:38Tom Brady's only, I think, thrown one pass
00:59:40more than five yards down the field today.
00:59:46Sam Madison suffered a separated right shoulder in Indianapolis,
00:59:51and we were asking him yesterday if it still hurts,
00:59:54and he says, yeah, it stings a little bit when I hit or get hit.
00:59:58But then it goes away.
01:00:00We don't know what this is that's bothering Sam.
01:00:02Well, it's his leg.
01:00:03I don't know what part of it.
01:00:07I know this.
01:00:09If you want to play the type of defense I was talking about in the second half,
01:00:12you're going to need him out there.
01:00:16And then, you know, we say a lot of things, and we try not to embellish,
01:00:21but Patrick Sertain and Sam Madison really are excellent man coverage corners.
01:00:28They can take any receiver and run with them all over the field.
01:00:32Sertain with the calf protecting that little finger on his left hand
01:00:37that was surgically repaired.
01:00:39So, you know, he has no chance of cheating out there today.
01:00:41He can't grab any jerseys.
01:00:43Well, he can't one-handed, I guess.
01:00:46Number 24, Jamar Fletcher has replaced Sam Madison.
01:00:49He's the rookie out of Wisconsin.
01:00:50First-round draft pick.
01:00:53Third and two, and Brady will go from the shotgun.
01:01:00The pass to the outside incomplete, and a marker is down.
01:01:04It was intended for Redmond.
01:01:06That was Kenny Nixon, the defensive end out there.
01:01:15Oh, same thing.
01:01:17Pass interference on the outside receiver.
01:01:20Offense, number 88.
01:01:23That penalty will be declined.
01:01:27Terry Glenn, the guilty man.
01:01:28Sorry, Greg.
01:01:29Twice they've run basically the same play,
01:01:32and both times the outside receiver has blocked before the football gets to the
01:01:38eligible pass receiver on offense.
01:01:43So, with a minute one to play in the first half,
01:01:46onto the field comes Ben Terry and the field goal unit.
01:01:49Antoine Smith going to make an early exit for the locker room.
01:01:52Yeah, he's limping too, so.
01:01:5523 yards out.
01:01:57Ben Terry's kick is perfect.
01:02:00His kick is good.
01:02:02Closing moments of the first half.
01:02:05New England in command by 20.
01:02:12Welcome back to Foxboro.
01:02:14Just under a minute to play.
01:02:17Miami has been almost helpless on offense.
01:02:22Ben Terry kicks it.
01:02:24Scooting along the ground, picked up by Dion Dyer,
01:02:27and Dyer out to about the 43 or 44-yard line.
01:02:31I want to remind you, tomorrow the playoff shakedown continues
01:02:34doubleheader style here on CBS.
01:02:36First, Tiki Barber and the Giants host Sean Alexander and the Seahawks,
01:02:40or Ray Lewis and the Ravens face Corey Dillon and the Bengals.
01:02:43And then, Tim Couch leads the Browns into Lambeau to meet Brett Favre
01:02:46and the Green Bay Packers.
01:02:48We ask you to check your local listings.
01:02:50The playoff begins with the NFL Today here on CBS.
01:02:56What's Marcus going to sing tomorrow?
01:03:00Eight total yards, 37 penalty yards, Miami.
01:03:04I'm going to go in there and sing tomorrow, Greg.
01:03:06You didn't know?
01:03:07I can't wait.
01:03:08Penalty marker is down.
01:03:09Fieber throws, and that's close to the 45-yard line.
01:03:14James McKnight appeared.
01:03:16Someone jumped offside for New England.
01:03:20Let's see if it was number 55, Willie McGinnis.
01:03:32Offside, defense, number 55.
01:03:36The penalty is declined.
01:03:38The result of the play, first down.
01:03:42So that moves the ball now into New England territory to the 46-yard line.
01:03:48And for Miami, their first first down of this second quarter
01:03:53comes with 47 seconds to play in the first half.
01:04:00We are reviewing the ruling on the field.
01:04:04So under two minutes to play, the ruling becomes automatic
01:04:08prior to the snap of the next play.
01:04:10You sure?
01:04:12Fairly sure.
01:04:14I'm also subject to review.
01:04:18Let's take a look at it.
01:04:19Jay Fieber throws it to James McKnight.
01:04:24Now, if this ball is incomplete.
01:04:30Okay.
01:04:34Looks like a good catch.
01:04:36No, it is.
01:04:38There's no question.
01:04:40I'm only right about 50% of the time, but I'm right this time.
01:04:44But just to say it was incomplete, then the Dolphins, of course,
01:04:47would have the opportunity to say, okay, now we'll take the penalty,
01:04:51and it would have been first and five.
01:04:53It was interesting talking to Bill Belichick about the way that this team
01:04:56has been built and rebuilt.
01:05:00He said last year there were 22 rookies on the team.
01:05:03This year they've had more competition, and they have more depth.
01:05:06He said last year there were 22 rookies on the team.
01:05:08This year they've had more competition, and they have more depth.
01:05:12After reviewing the play, the receiver caught the ball, knee hit the ground,
01:05:18then the arm hit the ground, and the ruling on the field stands,
01:05:21a completed catch.
01:05:25Jeff Tripp would analyze the thing so well that he probably can't be an
01:05:28announcer today.
01:05:30He can't do that.
01:05:31But, yeah, you're right, Greg.
01:05:33The one thing, and I know this, and we always talk about these kind of
01:05:36subjects, if you want to win right now in this league,
01:05:40you're not going to do it with a bunch of rookies.
01:05:42You need hardened veterans, guys that just can't put up
01:05:46and lose it anymore.
01:05:48They've gotten tough because they've been in the league a few years.
01:05:51Fieber with five throws, incomplete.
01:05:54And that one, defended by Terrence Shaw, was intended for Dietrich Ward.
01:06:00You know, such a match here.
01:06:02At that time, the Dolphins, look,
01:06:04they keep people in the backfield to protect,
01:06:07but it really limits your options down the field,
01:06:10and that's why you see two defenders on one receiver.
01:06:14The Dolphins only send out three guys or three wide receivers down the field.
01:06:18Well, here's a harbinger of bad things for Jay Fieber.
01:06:21Dietrich Ward, a few catches, neither does Chris Chambers today.
01:06:24Fieber with time, steps up over the middle,
01:06:31and X. Chambers goes to the 30-yard line.
01:06:34Enough for a first down.
01:06:37Good job.
01:06:39The protection is the key.
01:06:41Given these receivers a long time to get open.
01:06:44Here's a penalty marker.
01:06:55Offside.
01:07:00Defense, number 93.
01:07:03Ran into the player as he was ready to snap the ball purposely.
01:07:08Five-yard penalty.
01:07:10Remains first down.
01:07:12What did he do?
01:07:14They were trying to hurry up.
01:07:16Oh, okay.
01:07:17And Richard Seymour kind of accidentally on purpose bumped into someone.
01:07:21First down.
01:07:23He's a rookie, so I suppose he can be forgiven.
01:07:25First and five.
01:07:27Number 25.
01:07:32Seymour with time.
01:07:34And throws it away.
01:07:38Well, you look at this game, and I just think 20 to nothing, 19 seconds to go.
01:07:45You have one timeout.
01:07:46If they score, well, I don't have to tell you how big that is
01:07:49for the Miami Dolphins to score seven,
01:07:51but just to get three really will change their feelings
01:07:55and the way they'll come out and approach the second half.
01:07:59Biedler just four out of ten for 70 yards.
01:08:03Second down, five.
01:08:06You got it.
01:08:17Inside the 20, Diedrich Ward, and Ward has enough for a first down.
01:08:25And Miami uses its third and final timeout to stop the clock with 13 seconds to play.
01:08:31Well, now he's into the tough part of the field for the Dolphins,
01:08:34the New England Patriots.
01:08:36They are exceptional inside the 20, especially with their pass defense,
01:08:42and that has been the history.
01:08:45Ever since Bill Belichick has been in football coaching defense,
01:08:48that it's hard to throw the football once you get inside the 20 against what he does.
01:08:54There's the story of the New England defense.
01:08:56These last few plays, the Dolphins have taken extra care
01:09:02to give Biedler some time to throw, and that's the most time he's had to throw today.
01:09:05Yeah, and I like the playing they're doing.
01:09:08Protected first, give the receiver probably one more second.
01:09:13He gives the quarterback one more second to see it.
01:09:15He's going to see it clear, and he's going to be more active on the football.
01:09:19Remember, the Dolphins are out of timeouts.
01:09:28From the shotgun, Biedler goes for the end zone.
01:09:31Incomplete intended for Chambers,
01:09:33and the Dolphins looking for a jump ball in the corner of the end zone.
01:09:37It didn't materialize.
01:09:38It's second and ten.
01:09:39Yeah, there's not much they can do.
01:09:4013 seconds to go, no timeouts.
01:09:42Jay Biedler, he can't take a sack.
01:09:45You don't want to commit a penalty because that could ruin the clock out,
01:09:48and you must throw it in the end zone.
01:09:50The Patriots smart-played it very well.
01:09:53So, Olindo Mare will come on to attempt a 36-yard field goal
01:09:58and at least get Miami on the board here before time expires,
01:10:02and he will do just that.
01:10:05Mare now 16 out of 17 on the year, kicking,
01:10:10and the Dolphins are on the board.
01:10:12It's 20-3.
01:10:15And with just three seconds to play here in the first half.
01:10:20Coming January the 15th here on CBS,
01:10:23the creator of JAG brings you a new drama
01:10:25that dares to take you inside the Supreme Court.
01:10:28Joe Mantegna and James Garner star in first Monday
01:10:32Don't miss the series premiere Tuesday, January the 15th, here on CBS.
01:10:37Well, Greg, am I surprised about the first half?
01:10:41See, I'm doing your part, too.
01:10:43I'm just going to ask myself a question.
01:10:45Yes, I'm not surprised.
01:10:47I'm really surprised because I, on paper,
01:10:50if you made me choose, I'd say,
01:10:52I think the Miami Dolphins are probably the better football team.
01:10:55I think the Miami Dolphins are probably the better football team.
01:10:58I'm surprised at the physical part, how it's been played,
01:11:02the lack of discipline with the Miami Dolphins.
01:11:05Now, on the other side, can the Dolphins still come back and win?
01:11:09How many games have we done this year?
01:11:12We've seen unbelievable turnarounds in the second half,
01:11:15and there's no doubt in my mind that could happen here today, too.
01:11:18How many games this year have we been halfway out the door?
01:11:21And all of a sudden you go, oh, you wrote a couple of them off,
01:11:24and, you know, I hung in there.
01:11:28Along the ground, picked up.
01:11:32And Teddy Bruschi is run out of bounds at the 45-yard line,
01:11:35and that will bring us to the end of the first half.
01:11:43Pretty good job by Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
01:11:46Let's go down to Arman.
01:11:47Thank you, Greg.
01:11:48Coach, you talked to us about managing the game.
01:11:50It appears so far you've managed to physically take control of this game.
01:11:53I think we're doing a good job, but there's a long way to go,
01:11:56and, you know, this is a good team.
01:11:57They've come back before five times this year, so we've got to keep it up.
01:12:01All right, coach.
01:12:02Thank you, Greg.
01:12:03Bill Belichick knows exactly how many times Miami has come back.
01:12:06Our halftime score, New England 20, Miami 3.
01:12:08Coming up, off to Jim Mance for the next tele-halftime report.
01:12:11Jim, Mike, Randy, and Jerry analyze the first half,
01:12:13get your cutoff on the latest NFL news,
01:12:15and visit with Seattle quarterback Matt Hasselbeck.
01:12:18He comes your way after these messages from your local station.
01:12:25This finale at Foxboro Stadium has brought back three decades of Patriots,
01:12:32and they were celebrated here at halftime.
01:12:34John Hanna, Mike Haynes, one of the great cornerbacks of all time,
01:12:38Steve Grogan, a tough, tough quarterback,
01:12:42and the former wide receiver for the Colts
01:12:44and former head coach of the Patriots, Raymond Berry,
01:12:49and Irving Fryer of more recent vintage,
01:12:53and Ben Coates, the fine tight end,
01:12:57Drew Bledsoe of the modern-day Patriots.
01:13:00Lots of names here today.
01:13:01Let's go down to Armand Katan.
01:13:03Steve, very emotional halftime ceremony.
01:13:06Your thoughts on this last regular season game?
01:13:09Well, this has been a special place for all of the guys that were introduced today.
01:13:13To have a full house here and have this team be in a playoff contention makes it even specialer.
01:13:17All right, thank you, Steve. Greg, back up to you.
01:13:20All right, Armand, thank you.
01:13:22And as we prepare for this second-half kickoff,
01:13:25you know, all of these Patriots have to say that, boy,
01:13:28they've seen themselves quite a performance of the modern-day Patriots here in the first half.
01:13:32Well, they can also say, hey, we gave them some spirit.
01:13:35That's why they're doing so well.
01:13:36But really a tremendous performance by the Patriots' performance in the first half.
01:13:40And now the question is, what does Miami change in their philosophy in the second half to give them a chance to win?
01:13:48From the 10-yard line, this is Patrick Pax.
01:13:52Out to the 30.
01:13:54And about the 32-yard line.
01:13:57Let's take a look at the numbers here in the first half.
01:14:01And, boy, look at the number of first downs.
