00:07:16He's got to be able to get the run game going.
00:07:17He's got to be able to get the run game going.
00:07:18He's got to be able to get the run game going.
00:07:40No, Gus, I initially thought he had a lane out to the left,
00:07:42and you don't want to question the guy and what he sees on the field.
00:07:45But I thought Kevin Faulk had a great job, had a great lane right here,
00:07:49and he cuts it across.
00:07:50I thought he would have had the first down had he stayed left.
00:07:52You see him stop and start and come back across the field.
00:07:55And when you do that, you allow the defense to run back into the play,
00:07:59back into where you're carrying the ball.
00:08:00I think he had that lane, would have at least got the first down had he
00:08:03stayed wide on the left side.
00:08:05So brings on Adam Vinatieri, who's 15 of 19 on the season,
00:08:09in with just a 54-yarder.
00:08:12They get it down.
00:08:13It's up.
00:08:15And good.
00:08:1654 yards for Adam Vinatieri.
00:08:20And the Patriots get on the board first.
00:08:23941 to go in the first quarter of play.
00:08:29Adam Vinatieri nails a 54-yard field goal.
00:08:33His career-long is 55 yards.
00:08:35He had it in 96 against Jacksonville.
00:08:39And the Patriots take a 3-0 lead.
00:08:43Sends it away.
00:08:44Morgan from the 1.
00:08:45Drops it.
00:08:46Picks it up.
00:08:47Morgan now with the seam.
00:08:49Taking it straight up and gets to the 32 before being jumped by Brett Goldman,
00:08:55a 30-yard return.
00:08:57So Adam Vinatieri gives the Patriots the 3-0 lead
00:09:01with a 54-yarder.
00:09:02Would have been good for 60.
00:09:06The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Cadillac,
00:09:10the fusion of design and technology.
00:09:14HP PhotoSmart digital camera.
00:09:17How will you use it?
00:09:19And by American Express, wishing you all the best this holiday season.
00:09:28It's beginning to look a lot like football season.
00:09:30Here in New England.
00:09:32And the Patriots lead a 3-0.
00:09:34Cleveland takes over.
00:09:35First down and 10 at their own 31.
00:09:40Jacksonville on setback.
00:09:43Couch looking.
00:09:45Firing underneath.
00:09:46The ball caught at the 35, making the 37-yard line.
00:09:50Kevin Johnson with the reception as it's a gain of 7 yards.
00:09:55Defensively for the Patriots.
00:09:57Let's take a look.
00:09:59And Hamilton, Nugent in the starting lineup today,
00:10:01along with Seymour and Pleasant.
00:10:03The linebackers, Teddy Bruschi in the middle, Roman Pfeiffer.
00:10:06Great game last week versus the Jets.
00:10:08And in the secondary, Ty Law, Otis Smith on the corner.
00:10:12Loyer-Malloy to Bucky Jones.
00:10:14Romeo Crinnell is the defensive coordinator.
00:10:18Second and three.
00:10:20This time it's Jackson, straight ahead, goes backwards.
00:10:24Now this is a very important game, Brent, for the Cleveland Browns.
00:10:27They lost last week at home to Tennessee.
00:10:29But with six wins, they still have a chance to get into the playoffs.
00:10:32And, Gus, if they're going to go into the playoffs,
00:10:34it's going to most likely be as a wild card.
00:10:36And when you go ahead and do those tiebreakers,
00:10:38obviously the first one that they do is head-to-head competition.
00:10:41So when these two teams are playing, Cleveland and New England,
00:10:44they've got to be able to come back to that tiebreaker.
00:10:47And that's why Jameer Miller said, hey, if we're going to be in the playoffs,
00:10:51we have to win this game today,
00:10:53because most likely New England's going to be there at the end
00:10:56and they're going to have to go to that tiebreaker.
00:10:58A must-win game, a third and one.
00:11:01Jackson picks up the first down and some.
00:11:05Game three on the play, stopped by Brandon Mitchell.
00:11:09Bodies flying all over the place.
00:11:16And watch this effort, Gus, by Teddy Bruschi playing middle linebacker,
00:11:19normally an outside linebacker.
00:11:21He's going to go in there and dive over Aaron Shea.
00:11:25How about Teddy Bruschi getting some air?
00:11:27That would have been a phenomenal stop,
00:11:29but still that is getting up for the young man, 245 pounds.
00:11:33He made some heck of a plays last week at the Jets,
00:11:37first and ten from the 44.
00:11:41Couch sets up, dunks it to Shea over the middle.
00:11:46He gets into New England territory.
00:11:49Shea still running and finally brought down at the 45.
00:11:54Otis Spence had to bring him down,
00:11:56but the big tight end out of Michigan gains 11 yards the hard way.
00:12:00And, Gus, you know how much I like Aaron Shea.
00:12:02We saw him last year.
00:12:05He does a great job of catching that ball and pounding it in there.
00:12:08And look at the determination.
00:12:10And Aaron Shea, they actually have him play in the H-back position
00:12:13where he gets more blocking coming out of that full-back position,
00:12:16but I think he's more of a natural tight end.
00:12:18He takes a shot right there.
00:12:20And when you're leaning over to the right,
00:12:22it's either shoulder or neck stinger.
00:12:24And he's really, you can feel the pain right there.
00:12:27It's not feeling too good on the sideline.
00:12:29First and ten at the 45, Jackson.
00:12:33And Jackson is taken down for a loss of maybe two yards on the play.
00:12:38Mike Grable there to come up and make the tackle.
00:12:42Log on to NFL.com and see why Phil Simms thinks more teams should use
00:12:46the 3-4 defense like the Steelers.
00:12:49Log on to NFL.com or America Online, keyword NFL.com.
00:12:55And Aaron Shea on the sideline.
00:12:58Started at tight end last year.
00:13:00They brought in Santiago along with Ricky Dudley.
00:13:03Dudley been out of the lineup for most of the year because of an injury.
00:13:06And he's found kind of a nice spot at that H-back position.
00:13:10Second as well, not the 47.
00:13:13Tim Couch underneath Northcott with the catch.
00:13:16And Northcott is racked up at the 37.
00:13:20Teddy Bruschi with the tackle and another gain of 11 yards.
00:13:24And he's close to the first down.
00:13:27And Northcott actually caught some balls last week,
00:13:29and that's going to be one of the keys today for the Browns.
00:13:31Tim Couch has got to spread the ball around, a la Tom Brady.
00:13:35He's got to involve more receivers.
00:13:38Usually when you're playing against the Cleveland Browns,
00:13:40it's the Kevin Johnson show and nobody else.
00:13:42You've got to utilize other receivers.
00:13:44It can't just be Kevin Johnson all the time.
00:13:47So Cleveland calls a timeout.
00:13:49534 to go in the first quarter of play.
00:13:51Browns driving down by three.
00:13:57New England with a 3-0 lead over the Browns.
00:14:00However, Cleveland has it.
00:14:01Third down and one at the New England 36-yard line.
00:14:05Seventh play of the drive.
00:14:06That started at their own 31.
00:14:15They need a yard.
00:14:21And this is Jackson straight ahead.
00:14:23Picks up the first down.
00:14:34Third down conversions were a big problem
00:14:38for the Browns last week versus Tennessee.
00:14:40And you've got to be able to move the chain,
00:14:44and that's third down.
00:14:45And it's nice to have third and short.
00:14:47We've had that a couple times already in the first quarter.
00:14:49Gives you great opportunities where they get into trouble,
00:14:51those third and long situations when they can't protect Tim Couch.
00:14:55So a first down at the New England 34.
00:15:01Santiago in motion.
00:15:03Here's Couch running out.
00:15:05Sets up with backside.
00:15:07Now underneath, incomplete.
00:15:10Dennis Northgutton, the intended receiver.
00:15:12Now let's go to New York for an update.
00:15:14Here's Jim Nantz.
00:15:15All right, thank you, Gus.
00:15:16And we have an update from Minnesota.
00:15:18McNair drives him down the field five for five,
00:15:20but it's Eddie George, the final 13 yards, 7-0 Titans at the Vikings.
00:15:25And let's go back to Gus and Gus.
00:15:29Tennessee, are they done?
00:15:30I don't think so.
00:15:31I think they're sticking their nose right back in the race,
00:15:33and they're starting to get healthy.
00:15:35Five and six, cutting strong in December.
00:15:38Ten and six, I think, gets you in.
00:15:41And that's a win out, second and ten from the 34.
00:15:45Here's Jackson again, a flag on the play.
00:15:50Someone may have jumped offside on the Patriots.
00:15:57That is the case.
00:15:58I think it was big Richard Seymour, the nose tackle.
00:16:02Rookie out of Georgia.
00:16:05He's had a solid season.
00:16:07Offside, 93, defense.
00:16:10Five-yard penalty, still second down.
00:16:16And he's going to be a big challenge for center Dave Wollebaugh all day.
00:16:19Richard Seymour, 6'6", but plays with great leverage, very strong young man,
00:16:24and he has really been a terror.
00:16:26Not as many sacks, but he does a great job of collapsing that pocket
00:16:30and taking up players.
00:16:32305 pounds, second and five at the 29.
00:16:43Jackson crawls forward and gets to the 26.
00:16:48Now let's go back to Jim Nantz in New York.
00:16:50All right, San Diego and Philadelphia, Gus, and watch this.
00:16:53The magic has been absent from San Diego in recent weeks,
00:16:56but here's Doug Flutie, and Graham plucks it out of the air.
00:16:59He'll take it 61 yards at all to tie the game at seven.
00:17:02McNabb had thrown a touchdown toss earlier for the Eagles.
00:17:05Let's go back now to Gus and Brent.
00:17:07You look at that NFC East.
00:17:09That league is, that division rather is wide open.
00:17:12Arizona's playing well.
00:17:13The Redskins were playing well, and Philly has been up and down.
00:17:17That's amazing.
00:17:18Amazing catch by Jeff Graham.
00:17:20You see Doug Flutie.
00:17:21Jim Nantz is going to have to get his Flutie Flakes out of the cover.
00:17:24Third down, two from the 26.
00:17:27Tenth lay of the drive.
00:17:29Couch underneath.
00:17:30It's caught at the 20-yard line in the first down.
00:17:33Kevin Johnson with the reception in front of Ty Law, a gain of six yards.
00:17:38And on third down, it's Kevin Johnson time.
00:17:41He just comes up big all the time.
00:17:42You see him coming down in short motion.
00:17:44That allows him to get off that bump coverage that Ty Law is so good at.
00:17:47You can't get up and tight when a guy is going in motion.
00:17:50You see Tim Couch delivering it right on the numbers.
00:17:53Third down, move the change.
00:17:54And those conversions are so important,
00:17:56especially when you've got to keep your defense off the field like the Browns
00:18:00have been able to do the last couple of weeks.
00:18:02Browns three for three on third downs so far today.
00:18:05First and ten at the 20.
00:18:08Here's Jackson trying to find daylight.
00:18:12And Jackson goes down inside the 15.
00:18:16Teddy Pruski driving him to the ground.
00:18:192.47 to go in the first quarter.
00:18:22And the score is 3-0 New England.
00:18:26Tuesday on CBS, he's a hot shot lawyer with a lot of ambition
00:18:30and a responsibility to the disadvantaged.
00:18:33Now he's getting something he never had, competition.
00:18:37Don't miss an all-new episode of the season's highest-rated new drama,
00:18:40The Guardian, Tuesday on CBS.
00:18:44The 80th consecutive sellout at Foxborough.
00:18:47And the Patriots have won four of their last five.
00:18:50However, Cleveland on a seven-minute drive.
00:18:54Jackson straight ahead, gets to the ten.
00:18:58Gains three on the play, maybe even the nine.
00:19:01Pruski and Hamilton there to wrap him up.
00:19:04You know, the Cleveland Browns have had trouble running the ball this year.
00:19:07But James Jackson getting six and seven yards on first down,
00:19:10that gives you options on second and third.
00:19:13And that's the key.
00:19:14This Patriots defense has to play tougher on first downs.
00:19:17You can't let the Browns just march it right down the field.
00:19:20And Gus, with Aaron Shea out of the game,
00:19:22the Browns like to use a lot of the H-back formation back there.
00:19:25They don't have a guy listed behind him on the depth chart,
00:19:28so they're going to have to bring in Rod Jones if they want a back back there.
00:19:32But he's more of a tied in,
00:19:35and so they're doing this running attack right now with a single back.
00:19:39Cleveland on the season ranked as they pick up the first down,
00:19:4327th in the National Football League in rushing,
00:19:46averaging 84.4 yards per game.
00:19:51But recently they've had problems hanging on to the ball.
00:19:55The offense has fumbled eight times in their last two ballgames,
00:19:59losing three of them.
00:20:01And Gus, I said Rod Jones.
00:20:03It's actually Rod Monroe is the other tied in.
00:20:05I'm hearkening back to my old playing days.
00:20:08Six concussions, I understand.
00:20:10First and goal from the 10.
00:20:12What was your name again?
00:20:18Here's Couch, looking up top.
00:20:21Incomplete.
00:20:23Santiago had two halves on it, just couldn't hold on.
00:20:26Roman Pfeiffer breaks it up.
00:20:29And I like the way that Tim Couch threw that ball.
00:20:31He had his big plan in, a one-on-one matchup with a linebacker, Roman Pfeiffer,
00:20:34put it up high.
00:20:35Santiago, 6'7".
00:20:36Got to turn and make that catch.
00:20:38And you see Roman Pfeiffer keeping his hands up there, battling,
00:20:41and ended up knocking that ball out.
00:20:43Tim Couch is saying, come on, big man.
00:20:45We got to catch that one.
00:20:48Brings up second down and goal at the 10.
00:20:5014th play of the drive.
00:20:52Get started at the Cleveland 31.
00:20:55They've had it for eight minutes.
00:20:57Kevin Johnson in motion.
00:21:00Here's Couch.
00:21:02Fires.
00:21:03Incomplete.
00:21:04Kevin Johnson, the intended receiver on the quick screen.
00:21:08And that will bring up the all-important third down and goal at the 10.
00:21:13Using some of New England's offense against them.
00:21:15They've run that quick screen in New England.
00:21:17They ran it five times last week with Troy Brown.
00:21:19Haven't seen it as much from the Browns this year,
00:21:22but just get the ball in the hands of your playmaker,
00:21:24and Kevin Johnson is obviously their big playmaker and wide receiver.
00:21:29So what do you run in this situation at the 10, third and goal?
00:21:32Well, you want to utilize that middle of the field.
00:21:34I still like the tight end matchup.
00:21:36Santiago, maybe get one of your backs out of the backfield,
00:21:39catching the ball one-on-one with the linebacker.
00:21:43Here's Couch.
00:21:45Steps up in the pocket.
00:21:47Throws across his body!
00:21:51Touchdown!
00:21:53Norcott with the catch.
00:21:56And now the officials
00:21:58are having a conversation in the back of the end zone.
00:22:02And it looked to me like Norcott came across the back of the end zone,
00:22:05did a great job of cradling,
00:22:07using his elbows and his arms, sliding across the ground.
00:22:10And I thought he caught it
00:22:12without seeing the replay.
00:22:20And you see that catch, great job cradling.
00:22:22Oh, that ball is out.
00:22:23Oh my, I think that's why we have replay.
00:22:26That ball is out.
00:22:27And I think you're right.
00:22:28And I think that angle shows it well.
00:22:30Just right when he rolled over,
00:22:32he wasn't able to maintain control.
00:22:34And that's a big part of what is a catch.
00:22:37You've got to be able to maintain control.
00:22:39When he starts to roll to the top,
00:22:40you see that double clutch right there?
00:22:42I don't think he had it.
00:22:45And the Patriots have got to go ahead and challenge this.
00:22:49And Belichick throws the red flag onto the field.
00:22:52Now, how many times have we seen the red flag this year?
00:22:55Those buttons are supposed to work.
00:22:57Maybe it's so loud,
00:22:58the officials don't hear the little buzzer going off.
00:23:00New England is challenging the ruling on the field
00:23:03that it is a touchdown.
00:23:06Now, Gus...
00:23:07What's the definition of a catch?
00:23:08Well, we've done this so many times this year.
00:23:10First of all, let's talk about the replay.
00:23:12The call on the field was touchdown,
00:23:13so it has to be irrefutable evidence
00:23:15to overturn the call on the field.
00:23:17A catch is you have to have two feet or possession.
00:23:21And possession is going to be the big two feet and possession.
00:23:24And possession is going to be the big key right here.
00:23:26And you can go ahead and use the ground now.
00:23:29You can catch the ball,
00:23:30and as long as you maintain control of the ball
00:23:34and not have the ball spin out and roll out
00:23:36like it is right there.
00:23:38You see that ball?
00:23:39He's trapping it on the ground.
00:23:41Now, had he maintained the possession in his hands
00:23:43without that ball spinning or rolling out
00:23:46of the original position,
00:23:48then we would have had a catch.
00:23:51And it's got to be irrefutable evidence
00:23:53and so it still is a pretty tough angle to tell,
00:23:57but it looked like that initial play,
00:23:59and you saw that double clutch right there.
00:24:01That's usually a sign.
00:24:02When you see the guy re-grab for that ball,
00:24:04that means he didn't maintain that same position
00:24:08within his hands.
00:24:11And I think Walt Coleman will agree with you.
00:24:13Another look at the replay rules.
00:24:15The coaches are allowed to challenge twice per team.
00:24:21A team timeout is charged if a call is not reversed.
00:24:28So we'll look at it one more time
00:24:30and watch it all the way through.
00:24:32Usually that double clutch is a very obvious sign.
00:24:35You see it?
00:24:36And there's the ball right there,
00:24:37and that's starting to hit the ground.
00:24:40You're going to see him roll over,
00:24:42and the tip hits the ground,
00:24:43and watch his arm come back right there.
00:24:45You see him try to re-clutch it right there.
00:24:47And the ball, it means the ball is spinning in his hands,
00:24:50so he wasn't able to just maintain
00:24:52that same position with the ball.
00:24:55Because it used to be if you had the ball
00:24:57and it hit any part of the ground,
00:24:59it was a trap on the ground,
00:25:01but they changed that rule a few years back
00:25:03where you can actually go ahead and catch it
00:25:05and still use the ground
00:25:06as long as that ball position is still maintained
00:25:09the same way within your hands,
00:25:11as long as the ball's not spinning.
00:25:15So 61 plays have been overturned this season.
00:25:21The average delay, 3 minutes and 8 seconds,
00:25:24and the referee taking a lot of time to look at this.
00:25:27He's supposed to have only 90 seconds
00:25:29by the time he gets to the monitor.
00:25:33It looks like quite often
00:25:34they have a little bit more than 90 seconds.
00:25:37So here comes the call.
00:25:40After reviewing the play,
00:25:42the ball hit the ground.
00:25:45The receiver did not have possession of the ball.
00:25:49The ball is still moving.
00:25:51We have an incomplete pass.
00:25:54It will be 4th and 10 for Cleveland.
00:25:58New England is not charged a timeout.
00:26:03So let's look at it one more time.
00:26:08This is exactly what Coleman's looking at
00:26:10coming across like this angle, I'm sure.
00:26:12You see, Northcote initially does a great job
00:26:15of shielding the ball from the ground,
00:26:16but then the ball's starting to roll out right there,
00:26:18and the tip is going to drag across the ground,
00:26:20and just like he said,
00:26:21he wasn't able to maintain possession.
00:26:24That ball is still spinning in his hands
00:26:26instead of staying stable.
00:26:28And I love replay,
00:26:29and I think the officials have done a phenomenal job.
00:26:31It's tough some of these times with these viewing angles.
00:26:34We had a great angle of it right there.
00:26:36That's exactly why replay's in, Gus.
00:26:38So it brings on Phil Dawson
00:26:40with 10th and 28-yard field goal.
00:26:45They get it down.
00:26:46It's up, and we are tied at 3 apiece
00:26:49with 1.21 to go.
00:26:52Cleveland 3, New England 3
00:26:55here in the first quarter of play for Foxborough.
00:26:59¶¶

00:28:52Six-team play drive for the Cleveland Browns,
00:28:55however, resulting in only three points for Tim Couch and the offense.
00:28:59The Browns tie it up at three apiece here with 1.21 to go
00:29:02in the first quarter of play.
00:29:04Gus Johnson, Brent Jones with you from Foxborough
00:29:07here in Massachusetts.
00:29:11Cleveland sends it away.
00:29:13It's a short kick.
00:29:14Heeled it at the 22.
00:29:15Kevin Faulk breaks it outside, gets down the sideline
00:29:19and out of bounds at the 44.
00:29:22So the Patriots will have good field position
00:29:25after the 22-yard return.
00:29:29♪♪
00:29:371.12 to go here in the first.
00:29:39Game tied at three.
00:29:40Daylon McCutcheon has a right ankle sprain.
00:29:42He's out for the rest of the game for Cleveland.
00:29:45And Aaron Shea has a left shoulder AC sprain,
00:29:50and his return is questionable.
00:29:53First down and 10 at the 44.
00:29:56Antoine Smith, the single setback goes in motion.
00:30:02Brady on the short drop.
00:30:03Fire!
00:30:04Picked off!
00:30:05Fuller!
00:30:06Racing!
00:30:07Cuts it inside!
00:30:09Corey Fuller!
00:30:10Touchdown, Cleveland!
00:30:1349 yards!
00:30:21I guess that's something that we haven't seen much at all
00:30:24from Tom Brady this year.
00:30:26Went back and his eyes were going right to that slant route
00:30:29and Corey Fuller read it and drove on the ball.
00:30:33And it was thrown awful hard.
00:30:35He saw him tip it to himself and he was off to the races.
00:30:38And that's the way Cleveland has won games this year.
00:30:41They've moved the ball on offense,
00:30:42kept their defense off the field.
00:30:44When the defense has been on the field,
00:30:45they've gotten turnovers.
00:30:4725 interceptions coming into today's game.
00:30:51Extra point is up and good.
00:30:54Corey Fuller with his third interception of the season.
00:30:59Tom Brady has done a good job this year with his eyes.
00:31:02That time he was looking right at the slant route.
00:31:04Corey Fuller was looking right at Tom Brady,
00:31:07watching his eyes, following his eyes.
00:31:09And then Corey Fuller just cuts it back
00:31:11and gets into the end zone.
00:31:13Jumping that route.
00:31:16Fuller takes it all the way and with 102 to go in the first,
00:31:20the Browns take a 10-3 lead.
00:31:26All right, guys.
00:31:27This is Tim Couch of the Cleveland Browns.
00:31:29Tim helps the United Way build stronger communities
00:31:32by participating in an after-school recreational program
00:31:35for children.
00:31:36And whatever you do, don't run.
00:31:38As a quarterback, Tim is a field general.
00:31:41Come on, come on down.
00:31:43Come on down.
00:31:44Wait, wait, wait, wait.
00:31:46Look at the command.
00:31:48Come on out of there.
00:31:49Textbook.
00:31:50Oh, he's stuck.
00:31:51You sure?
00:31:53All right.
00:31:54Tim Couch, field general.
00:31:57You guys listen to anything?
00:32:01The Cleveland Browns are second in the league
00:32:04with 31 total takeaways coming into this game,
00:32:07plus 13 in the turnover ratio category
00:32:10and a huge interception for Corey Fuller
00:32:13gives Cleveland a 10-3 lead.
00:32:15Browns sends it away.
00:32:16Another short kick.
00:32:18Falk from the 15 and Falk to the 30.
00:32:22Falk upended at the 35 by Brent Boyer.
00:32:28An 18-yard return.
00:32:34And guys, watch Tom Brady.
00:32:35He looks right to that slant.
00:32:36You see him follow in his eyes, takes a hitch.
00:32:38That's just enough time for Corey Fuller,
00:32:40who's a veteran corner in this league,
00:32:42to go ahead and read the slant route and drive on it.
00:32:45That's the key to be able to run to that spot
00:32:47prior to the quarterback getting rid of the ball.
00:32:50And here's Drew saying, hey, with a veteran corner like that,
00:32:53you've got to be able to move him with your eyes initially.
00:32:57First and 10 at the 34.
00:32:59Here's the bench, Smith.
00:33:02And Antoine Smith gets to the 35.
00:33:07And Drew Bledsoe, injured week two versus the Jets,
00:33:12suffered a sheared blood vessel.
00:33:14But what a job he's done.
00:33:15I mean, he could be on the bench.
00:33:17He could be complaining.
00:33:18But he's been very supportive of Tom Brady.
00:33:22And he hadn't really, really complained
00:33:24about his status right now.
00:33:25Does want an opportunity, though, to play.
00:33:27Yeah, well, you know,
00:33:28he's got those competitive fires burning inside.
00:33:30But he's done a great job of being a team player,
00:33:32helping out Tom Brady.
00:33:34And Tom Brady's such a likable guy, too.
00:33:36Brady dumps it off Mark Edwards with the catch at the 35,
00:33:41driven backwards by Anthony Henry.
00:33:43And that young man is having an outstanding year,
00:33:46the rookie out of South Florida, with seven interceptions.
00:33:49And that's the end of the first quarter.
00:33:51Score, 10-3.
00:33:53We'll return to Foxboro right after this message.
00:33:56♪♪
00:34:07Corey Fuller gives the Browns a 10-3 lead
00:34:10with his interception return for a touchdown
00:34:12as we start the second quarter of play
00:34:14with the Patriots at their own 37,
00:34:17faced with a third down and seven.
00:34:20They need to go to the 44 for a first down.
00:34:25♪♪
00:34:37Brady out of the shotgun.
00:34:39All day to throw to the sideline.
00:34:42Patrick with the catch out of bounds.
00:34:45At the 41, a 19-yard gain.
00:34:49Brady putting that one on the money.
00:34:52And how about that throw
00:34:53coming back from the interception?
00:34:54This is a tough throw, the deep comeback.
00:34:56Watch him stand in the pocket, tall, confident,
00:34:59delivers it with a great spiral
00:35:01right on the money to David Patton.
00:35:04And that's a top-notch throw.
00:35:05He threw it before David Patton came out of his break,
00:35:07throwing it to a spot.
00:35:08David Patton getting the two feet in.
00:35:11Big first down.
00:35:12First down and 10 at the Cleveland 41.
00:35:15Play action again.
00:35:16Brady looking down at the seam.
00:35:19It's caught by Brown.
00:35:21Troy Brown at the 23-yard line.
00:35:34And Troy Brown is so elusive,
00:35:36and you get three wide receivers in there,
00:35:37and you have Terry Glenn running deep and clearing it out.
00:35:39Here comes Troy Brown right across the middle.
00:35:42Find that open hole in the zone,
00:35:44and that is tough to defend.
00:35:46And you've got three wide receivers,
00:35:47and one of them's Terry Glenn and one's Troy Brown.
00:35:49Came into this game with 78 catches for 944 yards.
00:35:54First and 10 at the 23.
00:35:56Antoine Smith lowers his shoulder
00:35:59and goes down to the 21.
00:36:05Gerard Warren with the tackle.
00:36:07He's the rookie out of Florida.
00:36:09First-round draft pick.
00:36:11And the way that offensive coordinator for the Patriots,
00:36:13Charlie Weiss, calls those plays.
00:36:15I really love that.
00:36:16Show confidence in your young quarterback.
00:36:18Threw a pick.
00:36:19Not a great pass.
00:36:20Three-step and just, you know, went after a veteran corner.
00:36:23Comes back, calls some big plays down the field.
00:36:26Let him get his feet wet again.
00:36:27Let him start gaining some of that confidence back.
00:36:29Tom Brady, I don't think he can be rattled, guys.
00:36:32Second down, 7 at the 20.
00:36:40Brady fires underneath.
00:36:42It's caught.
00:36:43Pat Brady with the football at the 13.
00:36:47Jackson is on the ground.
00:36:50And he gets up slowly.
00:36:54Raymond Jackson, 6th-year player out of Colorado State,
00:36:58shaking up a bit.
00:37:02And look at that collision.
00:37:03And sometimes the worst shot you take are from your own guys.
00:37:06And I think Earl Little delivered the blow
00:37:09to Jackson right there.
00:37:11So the Patriots have it first and 10 at the Cleveland 12.
00:37:17Inside handoff.
00:37:18Mark Edwards on the dive.
00:37:20Gets to the 10.
00:37:21And you always talk about not only scoring inside the red zone
00:37:26but getting touchdowns inside the red zone.
00:37:28Here's a good stat for you.
00:37:30The Patriots have scored seven straight times inside the red zone,
00:37:33six touchdowns, one field goal.
00:37:35That's the kind of statistic that you love.
00:37:37That's the percentage that you want.
00:37:39I think a big part of that has been Antoine Smith and his power running.
00:37:42That's really changed this Patriot offense this year.
00:37:45He's just grown in his confidence,
00:37:47very much like Tom Brady's grown in his confidence throughout the season.
00:37:50Second and seven.
00:37:51They throw it out.
00:37:53Brown on the hit.
00:37:55Slows his shoulder.
00:37:56Gets to the two.
00:37:58Troy Brown with a nice catch and a nice piece of running
00:38:02as he was taken down by Devin Bush.
00:38:05Now they have some words for each other.
00:38:07And we talked about Charlie Weiss.
00:38:08Get the ball in the hands of your playmakers.
00:38:11They ran this flanker screen five times last week versus the Jets
00:38:14because Charlie Weiss loves yards after the catch.
00:38:17And Troy Brown brings you yards after the catch.
00:38:20He doesn't care if he catches it one yard deep or 20 yards downfield.
00:38:25He is so elusive, does a great job of making players miss,
00:38:29and just get the ball in his hands.
00:38:31If they're not playing bump coverage, they're playing off,
00:38:33Tom Brady can check to that route, put the ball in your players' hands,
00:38:37and make them do something.
00:38:38So after throwing the interception to Corey Fuller,
00:38:40Tom Brady is 5-5 on this drive.
00:38:46And we talked about not being able to rattle Tom Brady.
00:38:48He's just cool, calm, happy.
00:38:51He's always got a smile on his face.
00:38:52But he's a competitor.
00:38:54And he has just made plays this whole season.
00:38:56And people seem to doubt him.
00:38:58And they say, oh, he did it against this team,
00:38:59but can he do it against this team or this defense against this defense.
00:39:02And we're going to blitz him or we're going to play more nickel coverage.
00:39:06We're going to try to confuse him.
00:39:07We're going to try to do this, that, and the other thing.
00:39:09And none of it's worked.
00:39:11He's continued to stay the course.
00:39:13He's been solid.
00:39:14He's been a great leader in the huddle.
00:39:16And guys like playing with him.
00:39:20And they are short of the first down.
00:39:21They need about a yard.
00:39:24And look at Brady's percentage today.
00:39:26As we told you, he's completed over 70% of his passes in the last four games.
00:39:31Right now, 87.5.
00:39:34And here are the last four games.
00:39:36And that just tells me that he's seeing the field very well.
00:39:39And we talked about it in the open.
00:39:40He's not just reading one side of the field.
00:39:43And he's distributing the ball to all his receivers.
00:39:45He's got good backs out of the backfield that can catch.
00:39:48He's got some wide receivers.
00:39:50He's got Terry Glenn coming back.
00:39:51That is so important.
00:39:53Why is that so difficult to do, though?
00:39:55Because when you're standing back there and guys are coming at you,
00:39:58they're trying to kill you, you get a little nervous.
00:40:00And that's where you really have to have that composure.
00:40:03And there aren't really a lot of quarterbacks in this league
00:40:06that have that type of composure.
00:40:08It's built into Tom Brady.
00:40:09Third down, one.
00:40:10At the three.
00:40:11Ninth play of the drive that started.
00:40:13At the 34, they hand it off straight ahead.
00:40:16And Edwards leans forward.
00:40:23Was that Tom Brady throwing an elbow in there?
00:40:25It looked like he was trying to throw a little elbow.
00:40:28He's a competitor.
00:40:32And big Mark Edwards going against his former team.
00:40:34You know he wants to score, get that first down.
00:40:37He kept those legs churning.
00:40:38I think actually that extra effort made it awful close.
00:40:42It's going to be a nose of the ball type of situation.
00:40:46And watch number 12.
00:40:47Hey, get off my guy.
00:40:49And then step back.
00:40:50There you go, Tom.
00:40:51Get out of there.
00:40:52Push and jab and move.
00:40:53Especially with Gerard Warren, 322 pounds, standing right next to you.
00:40:57That's right.
00:40:58Once you figure out who you push, then you take a step or two back.
00:41:01And say, come on, O-line, protect me.
00:41:05So the chains onto the field.
00:41:13And they are going to be short.
00:41:16So do you go for it?
00:41:17I think at home, backed up, I'd like to go.
00:41:19And you talked about it.
00:41:20Touchdowns versus field goals.
00:41:22I think you want touchdowns.
00:41:24Now, the likely choice here, give the ball to Ansuan Smith.
00:41:27He's doing a great job moving the chains, power running back.
00:41:30But the other thing that you got, Gus, play action pass.
00:41:33Fourth and one.
00:41:34You know all 11 Browns are going to be jumping on that run.
00:41:38This is where you can get a tight end release.
00:41:40You see big Jay Riegel reporting number 67.
00:41:43He's going to be an eligible player, too.
00:41:45You never know a little play action to the big offensive lineman.
00:41:51So Bill Belichick gambling.
00:41:54Electing to go for it on fourth down and inches.
00:42:00Ansuan Smith, the deep back.
00:42:02Mark Edwards, the up back.
00:42:04Smith picks up the first down.
00:42:08And he almost got in.
00:42:12And going back to scoring touchdowns in the red zone.
00:42:15I know that wasn't a touchdown.
00:42:17But the biggest difference for this Patriot team this year has been the power
00:42:21running of Ansuan Smith and the big offensive line behind big Rugemer
00:42:27Jenkins and Matt Light, left side of the Patriot line.
00:42:30And they've really developed a tough mentality along that offensive line this
00:42:34year.
00:42:35So that brings up first down and goal at the one-yard line.
00:42:40Almost a six-minute drive for the Patriots.
00:42:44Smith keeps his feet turning.
00:42:49Does he get in?
00:42:51No signal yet.
00:42:54Boy, I thought he got in after that second effort.
00:43:00And he does.
00:43:04Ansuan Smith with his ninth rushing touchdown of the season.
00:43:12He's got six touchdowns in his last five days.
00:43:15And how about this for a scrum?
00:43:17Coming again to the left side where they've had some success.
00:43:20And watch Ansuan Smith.
00:43:21He stopped initially.
00:43:22Keep those legs turning.
00:43:23He's moving in the same spot.
00:43:26Chewing up turf.
00:43:27Now watch Matt Light.
00:43:28Corey Fuller, get out of there.
00:43:30They're pushing the pile forward.
00:43:32There he is.
00:43:33There's the stripe.
00:43:34There's the ball.
00:43:35That's a heck of an effort.
00:43:37And I like Bill Belichick's aggressiveness on fourth down, going for it.
00:43:41That's confidence in your team.
00:43:43And that's what a playoff team does, Gus.
00:43:45They answer a mistake.
00:43:46We had the Corey Fuller play.
00:43:48Touchdown for the Browns.
00:43:49You answer that with a big drive of your own.
00:43:52Adam Vinatieri into a tip.
00:43:54The extra point.
00:43:55High snap handled nicely by Walter.
00:43:59And the extra point is good.
00:44:01With 9.39 to go here in the second quarter, we are tied up at 10 apiece.
00:44:0710-10 the score.
00:44:19Antoine Smith with the touchdown.
00:44:21A six-minute and 23-second drive for the Patriots.
00:44:26Tom Brady 5-0-5 on the drive.
00:44:30This is Gay at the 5.
00:44:32Ben Gay straight ahead.
00:44:34And he is taken down at the 33-yard line.
00:44:39Larry Izzo with a special deep tackle.
00:44:42Pimp Couch wants to get something going.
00:44:47The NFL on CBS.
00:44:49He's sponsored by new Pepsi Twist.
00:44:52Pepsi and Diet Pepsi with a twist of lemon.
00:44:56Best Buy.

00:45:12go to cbs.sportsline.com or America Online, keyword CBS Sportsline.
00:45:19Patriots tie the game up at 10 apiece.
00:45:21Now Cleveland takes over at their own 32.
00:45:27Monroe in motion.
00:45:29Here's the handoff to Jackson.
00:45:31Straight ahead stopped by Mike Grable.
00:45:34Maybe a gain of a yard.
00:45:36Tonight on 60 Minutes, before September 11th, it was the most talked-about crime of the year.
00:45:41But suppose the culprit was also a victim.
00:45:44Confused?
00:45:45Suppose you watch 60 Minutes tonight.
00:45:51Makes its second down.
00:45:53Nine yards to go for Pimp Couch.
00:45:56And the Cleveland Browns.
00:46:04They fake the pitch, bounce, steps up in the pocket, bat it down.
00:46:10And that one batted down by Richard Seymour.
00:46:16And how about the pass rush to the New England Patriots?
00:46:19Pimp Couch was actually lucky to elude the blitz.
00:46:23See Mike Grable coming to the outside.
00:46:25And there's Bobby Hamilton.
00:46:27Couch steps up.
00:46:28And there's Richard Seymour.
00:46:30And that's just a break that he didn't get sacked initially.
00:46:33And for the first time today, the Browns are facing third and long.
00:46:36They've been third and short this whole first half.
00:46:39And that's really been a key for them having some success thus far.
00:46:42Third and nine at the 33.
00:46:44And Pimp Couch wants to call a timeout.
00:46:478.50 to play in the second quarter.
00:46:50Back to Foxborough after this.
00:46:57Foxborough Stadium.
00:46:59And the score with 8.50 to go in the second quarter of play is 10-10
00:47:03between New England and Cleveland.
00:47:06Gus Johnson along with Brent Jones.
00:47:08The Patriots have won four of their last five most recently
00:47:11against the Jets last week.
00:47:13Cleveland losing at home to Tennessee 31-15 a week ago.
00:47:17They have six wins, an important game,
00:47:19if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive.
00:47:22Third and eight at the 34.
00:47:24They need to go to the 42.
00:47:26And Couch is sacked at the 25 by Lawyer Malloy.
00:47:30The safety on the blitz.
00:47:32And it's the first sack of the day for New England.
00:47:35And that's one thing you've got to be aware of when you play the Patriots
00:47:37is Lawyer Malloy is all over the field, in the box, coming on the blitz.
00:47:42Watch him coming from this side of the screen right here.
00:47:44He's going to come into the screen untouched.
00:47:46Tim Couch trying to step up.
00:47:48Nobody there to block Lawyer Malloy.
00:47:50You've got to have a hot read.
00:47:54Troy Brown back deep, backpedals, and starts at the 23.
00:48:01And Brown splitting the defense and gets to the 35,
00:48:06a 52-yard punt by Chris Gardocki and a 12-yard return.
00:48:11So Lawyer Malloy with a big play on defense.
00:48:14Gives his offense the ball once again.
00:48:18The NFL on CBS is sponsored by the United States Postal Service
00:48:25and by Gateway, where you've got a friend in the business.
00:48:368.28 to play in the second quarter, 10-10 hour score.
00:48:40And New England has had great field position on all of their drives.
00:48:45Right now they have it at the 35.
00:48:47And that's so important to have a shorter field during the course of a game,
00:48:50and drive sustaining is also a big part of it.
00:48:54First and 10 at the 35.
00:48:57Antoine Smith running over the right side, bottled up.
00:49:00Now goes forward and picks up three yards on the play, maybe four.
00:49:06Devin Bush giving him a stop.
00:49:11So Foxborough Stadium, the final year of existence for this place,
00:49:16but right next door the new CMGI Field.
00:49:19And, you know, if the weather gets bad there
00:49:22and you don't want to stand out in the cold,
00:49:24you can go into the lounge area or the restaurant area and watch the game on TV.
00:49:30I've already bought my club seats for next year.
00:49:33Second and five at the 40.
00:49:36Here's Smith again, and Smith gets up to the 43.
00:49:43The owner of the New England Patriots, Bob Kraft,
00:49:45and his beautiful wife Myra sitting right next to him.
00:49:49We had dinner with Mr. Kraft last night, and he paid.
00:49:53That's why we had dinner with him, huh?
00:49:54That's right.
00:49:55And I think even Mr. Kraft would agree he's going from probably the worst stadium in the NFL
00:49:59to the best, and they've spared no expense on this new stadium,
00:50:02and it's really a tribute to him
00:50:04and getting this thing built for this greater New England area.
00:50:08Third down two at the 43.
00:50:11They're two of four on third down conversion.
00:50:17Brady looking underneath, broke it up.
00:50:21Incomplete.
00:50:22Corey Fuller with the pass deflection intended for David Patton.
00:50:30And one of the keys for this Browns defense, and Corey Fuller knows that,
00:50:33is that they know when Tom Brady gets in the shotgun that that ball is going to come out quick,
00:50:38and so you can afford to gamble.
00:50:39You can take those shots.
00:50:40You see Corey Fuller right there.
00:50:41We saw it earlier on the three-step drop.
00:50:44When a quarterback's in the shotgun and it's going to come out quick
00:50:47or you're only taking three steps, you know as a defensive player
00:50:51that that ball's got to come out, and you can afford to take some chances.
00:50:55So Ken Walter stands at the 29, and Dennis Northcutt is back at the 19.
00:51:00First punt of the game for Walter.
00:51:05Averaging close to 40 yards per punt on the season.
00:51:15Left-footed punter gets away a nice one.
00:51:18Northcutt with the fair catch signal, and it's Northcutt at the 10-yard line.
00:51:24A 46-yard punt.
00:51:28Now Monday on CBS begins with an all-new night of great comedy,
00:51:32starting with The King of Queens, followed by The Ellen Show at a special time.
00:51:37Then it's Monday's number one comedy, Everybody Loves Raymond,
00:51:40followed by Becker starring Ted Danson.
00:51:43And don't miss a dramatic all-new Family Law, Monday on CBS.
00:51:50Total yards so far, New England with 96, Cleveland with 49,
00:51:54but Corey Fuller picked one off, ran it back for a touchdown.
00:51:58And the Browns are in this game tied at 10.
00:52:02They start at their own 11.
00:52:12Underneath, broken up, Ty Lough getting a hand in there, but a late flag comes in.
00:52:18A late flag on the play.
00:52:20Kevin Johnson, the intended receiver.
00:52:23And the side judge must have thought that Ty Lough had his left arm around Kevin Johnson
00:52:27because it didn't look like there was contact at that point.
00:52:32And I'm sure that's what he's going to end up calling.
00:52:35Defend.
00:52:36Automatic.
00:52:37First down.
00:52:42You know, you've got five-yard chuck zone, Gus, and there we are.
00:52:44We're after five yards, and there's Ty Lough still getting his hands on Kevin Johnson after that,
00:52:48and I think that's why they call the penalty.
00:52:52And Tim Couch saying, you know, when you're a quarterback, though,
00:52:54you say pass interference every time if the ball is incomplete.
00:52:57But he was right that time.
00:52:59First down and ten at the 17.
00:53:06Here's the handoff, James Jackson.
00:53:09Jackson gets to the 20, a gain of four.
00:53:14And the Cleveland offense under Butch Davis making some improvements.
00:53:19Still not there yet, but take a look over the years.
00:53:22Well, this is the biggest thing that's standing out to me, the time of possession.
00:53:25They're really starting to be able to sustain some drives.
00:53:27I know that they like the rush yards up and the points, but this is the most important.
00:53:31That six-and-five record, and nobody would have thought that at the beginning of the season,
00:53:35but Butch Davis has done a phenomenal job of changing the mindset in Cleveland.
00:53:39These guys expect to win.
00:53:41Second and six at the 21.
00:53:45Couch again on the slant.
00:53:47Kevin Johnson with the catch.
00:53:48Goes down at the 25.
00:53:51He'll be about three yards shy of the first down.
00:53:55Terrence Shaw with the tackle.
00:53:57And one thing about Butch Davis is, I don't know, there's something about the guy that's different.
00:54:04There's some kind of spark that he has or ability that he has to motivate these guys,
00:54:09because we saw a lot of Cleveland games last year,
00:54:11and they didn't play with the passion that they're playing with this season.
00:54:14No, they were just trudging through the season the last couple of years at this point,
00:54:17and Butch Davis really has changed that mindset, brought in some more players,
00:54:21guys that want to compete, and that's really the key.
00:54:24On third and one.
00:54:27Jackson stumbles forward, and he's close to the first down.
00:54:34Roman Pfeiffer in on the play.
00:54:37And we've talked about how Cleveland has had third and manageable,
00:54:40and that's really been a big part of this first half.
00:54:42Coming up again with another third and one.
00:54:44When you can move those change, third and one gives you an opportunity.
00:54:47You can even run play action or pound that ball up and down.
00:54:52Watch James Jackson.
00:54:53Let's look at his eyes.
00:54:54Let's see if he's looking at the hole.
00:54:55He's looking straight ahead.
00:54:56Good job, James.
00:54:57You're not giving anything away.
00:54:58Teddy Brucey getting smashed up inside, and James Jackson going off tackle
00:55:03and finding that hole and leaning forward.
00:55:07I think he might have that first down by half a ball.
00:55:10Jackson with 514 yards on the season coming into this game,
00:55:15only averaging three yards per carry.
00:55:19And is that a first down?
00:55:21Yes, it is.
00:55:24About a half inch.
00:55:26There you go.
00:55:27It's tough when you get that ball in the chain,
00:55:28and you're trying to figure out is it first or not.
00:55:32Officials right on top of it.
00:55:33They didn't need a conference out for that one, and that's so important.
00:55:37And that comes back to first and second down.
00:55:40You've got to get positive yards, whether it's two or three yards.
00:55:43Just be within third and three or less, and then you have some options on third down.
00:55:47But third and seven, third and eight, that's where you get in trouble.
00:55:50That's when the pass protection falls apart.
00:55:53Jackson, 11, carries 27 yards.
00:55:55First down for Cleveland at their own 27.
00:56:01Play action.
00:56:02Couch setting up, looking for Kevin.
00:56:05Johnson has him.
00:56:06Johnson holds on to the football and picks up a first down.
00:56:10Matt Stevens with the tough hit, but it's a gain of 16 yards.
00:56:14And the Browns have gotten a lot of underneath routes here thus far in the first half.
00:56:18This time brought Kevin Johnson in motion.
00:56:20Watch him on the deep crossing route.
00:56:22And Tim Couch actually had him even more open early.
00:56:24And you see Matt Stevens is going to come into your picture.
00:56:26But Tim Couch took a while to throw that ball and set his feet.
00:56:31Would have liked to have gotten the ball in the hands of Kevin Johnson just a little earlier,
00:56:34giving him some room to get up, turn it up field.
00:56:36But still, if there's a big play to be had for Cleveland,
00:56:39it's going to be Kevin Johnson most likely.
00:56:41Johnson's on the sideline right now.
00:56:43First and ten at the 44.
00:56:45Couch in trouble.
00:56:47He gets rid of it.
00:56:48Nobody even close to the football.
00:56:51And let's see if he got out of the pocket.
00:56:54Remember, the pocket is tight end to tight end.
00:56:57If not, it'll be intentional grounding.
00:57:00And that's what the officials are discussing.
00:57:02The quarterback was out of the pocket.
00:57:04There's no intentional grounding.
00:57:05The quarterback was out of the pocket.
00:57:07Great call, partner.
00:57:08You were all over that roll.
00:57:11And we've seen it.
00:57:12And here's the pocket right here.
00:57:14Got to get out of there.
00:57:15Tight end to tight end.
00:57:17And once you break that pocket and get the ball in the line of scrimmage,
00:57:20it's not grounding.
00:57:22And, oh, yeah, Tim Couch, he was at least a yard or two beyond it.
00:57:25And he knows, at least most of the time you hope you know.
00:57:30Now it's second and ten for the Browns at their own 44.
00:57:34Couch six of 13 today, 58 yards and one interception.
00:57:42And the play clock expires.
00:57:44Let's see if they got a timeout.
00:57:46And I think a big part of that was the officials didn't reset it
00:57:51after discussing the potential grounding call.
00:58:00We will reset the 25-second clock due to the announcement on the previous play.
00:58:07So no harm.
00:58:09Now Belichick a little hot under the collar on the sideline.
00:58:14Second down ten at the 44.
00:58:37Tim Couch gets hit as he throws.
00:58:41Incomplete.
00:58:42And Couch is still down.
00:58:44Couch took a beating.
00:58:48Tim Couch gets up slowly.
00:58:50But Teddy Bruschi ran right through him.
00:58:54And Teddy Bruschi has really been an undervalued,
00:58:58underrated part of the success of this New England defense.
00:59:01And watch this shot.
00:59:02Couch is just ready to deliver.
00:59:04Oh, and that is a shot.
00:59:06When you see that head snap back, you know a quarterback has taken a shot.
00:59:10And last week versus the Jets,
00:59:12nobody will talk about the key plays of the game.
00:59:14Teddy Bruschi stopping Curtis Martin early in that first half on third and one
00:59:19of the goal line might have turned that whole game around.
00:59:21Third and ten at the 44.
00:59:23They need to go to the New England 46 for a first down.
00:59:27Here's Couch.
00:59:28Oh, and trouble.
00:59:30And Couch is sacked by Roman Pfeiffer.
00:59:34Second sack of the day for the Patriots.
00:59:37When you talk about a man possessed, Roman Pfeiffer.
00:59:41Nine tackles last week versus the Jets.
00:59:44Four for losses.
00:59:45He almost caused Tim Couch to ground the ball a couple plays ago,
00:59:49and here he comes again.
00:59:51And I don't know if the Cleveland Browns offensive line has an answer yet for
00:59:53Roman Pfeiffer, who's been on fire these last couple weeks.
00:59:57Chris Gardocki from the 28.
01:00:03Spirally kick that short.
01:00:05From the 15, it's Brown.
01:00:07Brown with the seed.
01:00:09Brown can break it.
01:00:10And he can go.
01:00:13Troy Brown.
01:00:15Touchdown, Patriots.
01:00:18No flags.
01:00:21And 85-yard return for Troy Brown.
01:00:39And guess when we eventually see the replay,
01:00:41you're going to see all pro lawyer Malloy on the punt return team make a
01:00:47huge block.
01:00:48And it brings Troy Brown.
01:00:51And Cleveland has had trouble on their special teams units,
01:00:54but that's big trouble when you give up a touchdown like that.
01:01:01Extra point by Adam Benatari.
01:01:06It's up and good.
01:01:0985-yard punt return for Troy Brown,
01:01:12his first touchdown on a punt return this season.
01:01:16And the tie to that one is season-long 40 yards.
01:01:20And we know Troy Brown is very elusive.
01:01:22And you're going to watch him catch the punt and get up field.
01:01:25Watch Dwayne Rudd.
01:01:26Watch him break down.
01:01:27He's just about to make the tackle.
01:01:28Watch this.
01:01:29Lawyer Malloy.
01:01:30Bang.
01:01:32It's all over right there.
01:01:34And how about big Richard Seymour, 6'6", 305 pounds,
01:01:38taking down the kicker.
01:01:39That's a little unfair.
01:01:43One more look.
01:01:44And you're going to see it from Dwayne Rudd's position to watch
01:01:47Lawyer Malloy.
01:01:48And that is so impressive to see a starter,
01:01:51an all-pro strong safety on the punt return team,
01:01:54making the block that springs Troy Brown for the touchdown.
01:01:57Yeah.
01:01:58And how about Richard Seymour on poor Chris Kardocki.
01:02:02That is just trying not to get hurt.
01:02:07And that's some guys that want it.
01:02:09You've got a couple of starters on your punt return team.
01:02:12When you're a starter in this league,
01:02:13you don't necessarily want to go out for special teams.
01:02:15You want to take a breather.
01:02:19And that is the first return for a touchdown this season for the Patriots.
01:02:26As Brown goes 85 and New England with .328 to go in the second quarter,
01:02:32take a 17-10 lead.
01:02:34And that's why you have Troy Brown in there.
01:02:36And you know over the years I haven't been a big proponent of having one of
01:02:40your starting receivers be the punt return guy.
01:02:42I think there's too many opportunities for him to get hurt.
01:02:45Troy Brown's been the main part of this New England offense this year
01:02:48without Terry Glenn.
01:02:50And it just seems like they are.
01:02:52And we know Troy Brown's very elusive.
01:02:54And you're going to watch him catch the punt and get up field.
01:02:57Watch Dwayne Rudd.
01:02:58Watch him break down.
01:02:59He's just about to make the tackle.
01:03:00Watch this.
01:03:01Lawyer Malloy.
01:03:02Bang.
01:03:04It's all over right there.
01:03:06And how about big Richard Seymour.
01:03:086'6", 305 pounds taking down the kicker.
01:03:12That's a little unfair.
01:03:15One more look.
01:03:17And you're going to see it from Dwayne Rudd's position.
01:03:19Watch Lawyer Malloy.
01:03:21And that is so impressive to see a starter, an all-pro,
01:03:24strong safety on the punt return team making the block that springs Troy
01:03:28Brown for the touchdown.
01:03:30Yeah.
01:03:31And how about Richard Seymour on poor Chris Kardocki.
01:03:34That is just try not to get hurt.
01:03:39And that's some guys that want it.
01:03:41You've got a couple of starters on your punt return team.
01:03:44When you're a starter in this league,
01:03:46you don't necessarily want to go out for special teams.
01:03:48You want to take a breather.
01:03:51And that is the first return for a touchdown this season for the Patriots.
01:03:58As Brown goes 85.
01:04:01And New England with 328 to go in the second quarter.
01:04:05Take a 17-10 lead.
01:04:07And that's why you have Troy Brown in there.
01:04:09And you know over the years,
01:04:10I haven't been a big proponent of having one of your starting receivers be
01:04:14the punt return guy.
01:04:15I think there's too many opportunities for him to get hurt.
01:04:18Troy Brown's been the main part of this New England offense this year
01:04:21without Terry Glenn.
01:04:23And it just seems like a gamble.
01:04:24But when he can do things like that in his great elusiveness,
01:04:28you see why Coach Bill Belichick wants him out there.
01:04:32This is King going straight ahead.
01:04:35And King taking down at the 29.
01:04:40Fred Coleman with the tackle.
01:04:44Now Saturday, join us here on CBS, starting at 1 p.m. Eastern,
01:04:48for the CBS Sports Spectacular Jeep King of the Mountain Downhill Series.
01:04:52Then, live at 2 p.m. Eastern,
01:04:54as NCAA hoops action when Jason Gardner and the Arizona Wildcats
01:04:58tangle with Marcus Taylor and the Michigan State Spartans.
01:05:02That's all Saturday here on CBS.
01:05:07Troy Brown.
01:05:09And that run tied for the second longest in team history.
01:05:13Back in 85, Irving Fryer ran one back 85 yards.
01:05:19Leland takes over, first down at 10 at the 30.
01:05:24To the sidelines, Santiago with the catch.
01:05:27He is down at the 33 by Roman Pfeiffer.
01:05:33And you can tell a lot about a defense when you see guys rally to the ball.
01:05:36Santiago caught the ball in the flat,
01:05:38and there's five or six Patriots immediately out there.
01:05:40That's team defense.
01:05:42That's what Bill Belichick teaches.
01:05:44Romeo Cornell coming over from the Browns.
01:05:46That's the attacking style of defense that this team needs down the stretch.
01:05:50They've got a running game.
01:05:51They've got a young, hot quarterback into December
01:05:54and potentially the playoffs.
01:05:56That's what wins games for you.
01:05:58A rally to the ball defense, second down seven at the 33.
01:06:05Picked up by the Browns.
01:06:09Johnson with the catch, gets to the 45.
01:06:12Stopped by Ty Long.
01:06:14The catch of the day for Johnson, a gain of 13.
01:06:18You know how much I like Kevin Johnson
01:06:20and have liked him for the last couple years
01:06:22because he's really been the only threat for the Cleveland Browns.
01:06:25There was even some talk earlier this year of trading him.
01:06:27That got him fired up.
01:06:29He's been the guy making plays when defenses try to stop him every week.
01:06:33He's the main focus.
01:06:35You say, you've got to stop Kevin Johnson,
01:06:37and he continues to have big games and make big plays.
01:06:40Couch, pump fake, looks underneath Jackson with the catch.
01:06:46Out of the backfield, picks up the first down,
01:06:49and that will take us to the two-minute warning.
01:06:52Roman Pfeiffer with the tackle.
01:06:54Our score, New England 17, Cleveland 10.

01:07:55Trembling, shaking
01:08:00Oh, my heart is aching

01:08:08Coming through the barriers of death

01:08:21As they dive through the darkening dawn
01:08:30When Harm and Mack meet under the mistletoe...
01:08:33Awkward moment number 310.
01:08:35...a holiday celebration turns into something more.
01:08:38All new JAG, CBS Tuesday.
01:08:41Coming up on the Nextel Halftime Report,
01:08:44join Jim, Mike, Randy and Jerry for all the scores and highlights,
01:08:48and a preview of the Jets-Steelers matchup.
01:08:51Jerome Bettis out of the game because of an injury,
01:08:54and the Jets reeling after their loss last week to the Patriots.
01:08:59And the game's summary.
01:09:01New England up 17-10, Troy Brown,
01:09:04the difference maker with the 85-yard punt return for a touchdown.
01:09:08However, Cleveland has good field position at the New England 46.
01:09:13Here's the inside handoff, Jamel White now.
01:09:16Jamel running, picks up two yards,
01:09:19Loyer-Malloy with the tackle.
01:09:21Timeout situation for Cleveland, they have one remaining.
01:09:24Maria Buffett's being used by the Browns.
01:09:27140 to go.
01:09:29Couch, looking,
01:09:32and caught!
01:09:35And out of bounds, Dawson.
01:09:37Ja'Juan Dawson gets out of bounds at the 20,
01:09:41and New England with an opportunity to pick that one up.
01:09:44Otis Smith missed by inches, and that would have been a touchdown.
01:09:48And Otis Smith drove that out route.
01:09:50I think the ball might have gone right through his hands.
01:09:52I thought he was off to the races.
01:09:54It looked like he just tipped off of it,
01:09:56and he was gone for sure, nobody around.
01:09:59Watch him drive that ball.
01:10:01I don't know how he missed it.
01:10:03Just cut right in front of the receiver.
01:10:05He would have been gone.
01:10:07Ja'Juan Dawson, great concentration.
01:10:09Cleveland at the 20-yard line.
01:10:12Here's Couch, setting up.
01:10:14Deep in the pocket, down the seat.
01:10:16This time it is picked up.
01:10:18Buckley, Jarrell Buckley,
01:10:21reverses, wants a block,
01:10:24and he gets to the 29.
01:10:37And Gus, I know coming off of this route,
01:10:39Kevin Johnson at the top of his route,
01:10:41I saw him kind of trip down.
01:10:43I don't know if he was pushed.
01:10:45I saw Tim Couch screaming awful loud at the official.
01:10:51Let's watch at the top of your screen.
01:10:53They're going to come in from the right-hand side.
01:10:55You're going to see Kevin Johnson just stumble right there.
01:10:58Tim Couch throwing the ball to where he thought
01:11:01Kevin Johnson was going to be.
01:11:03And Buckley, who had the big interception last week in New York,
01:11:07comes back with a huge one again today.
01:11:10So the Patriots take over with 1.17 to go,
01:11:13at their own 29.
01:11:15Four receiver packets.
01:11:18Brady, out of the backfield,
01:11:20he finds J.R. Redman who gets out of bounds
01:11:23at the 36.
01:11:26Brad Boyer, there to push him out of bounds
01:11:29after a gain of seven.
01:11:33So with 1.12 to go, if you're New England,
01:11:36do you try to put more points on the board,
01:11:38or do you play it conservatively?
01:11:40Oh, no, you keep trying.
01:11:42You've got some momentum here.
01:11:44You're playing at home.
01:11:46You've got some pretty decent field position.
01:11:48You've got a hot quarterback that spreads the ball around.
01:11:51Second and three at the 36.
01:11:54And here's Buck taking the snap.
01:11:58And Buck gets to the 37, maybe.
01:12:02Jameer Miller with the tackle.
01:12:05One o'clock, a minute now.
01:12:08And the timeout situation,
01:12:11New England with three remaining,
01:12:13Cleveland with one.
01:12:16Brady, the Falks, they'll try to keep him in bounds.
01:12:20And they do keep him in bounds.
01:12:24And you know, I don't think Kevin Falk got the first down
01:12:27because he turned it back in.
01:12:28I think had he just caught the ball and fell forward,
01:12:31he would have had it.
01:12:32He was right there, but he actually spun his shoulders
01:12:34and went back inside.
01:12:35He's going to be short.
01:12:36Here's the rule.
01:12:38If you're knocked out of bounds going backwards,
01:12:40the clock continues to run.
01:12:42If you're knocked out of bounds going forwards or to the side,
01:12:45then the clock will stop.
01:12:48Here you go, to the sideline.
01:12:50He catches the ball.
01:12:51If you're knocked out of bounds going backwards,
01:12:54the clock, which he was, the clock continues to run.
01:12:57If you're knocked out of bounds going forward or to the side,
01:13:00it will be stopped.
01:13:03And a first down anyway for New England.
01:13:06I think he got a good mark on that one
01:13:08because he was thinking about getting out of bounds.
01:13:10But you got to make sure you get that first down first.
01:13:13Back to Foxboro after this.
01:13:18When Harm and Mack meet under the mistletoe...
01:13:20Awkward moment number 310.
01:13:22...a holiday celebration turns into something more.

01:13:55plus a preview of the Jets-Steelers matchup.
01:13:58Coming up later on today here on CBS Sports,
01:14:01first and ten for the Patriots at the 39,
01:14:0534 seconds remaining in the first half.
01:14:09Three timeouts remaining for New England.
01:14:12Dom Brady looking down the field.
01:14:16England lose.
01:14:17Intended for Charles Johnson.
01:14:22Anthony Henry covering.
01:14:26You guys, let's go back to Terrell Buckley's big interception.
01:14:30We talked about Kevin Johnson at the top of the route.
01:14:32Here they are, eight yards downfield.
01:14:34Hand-checking.
01:14:35You're only supposed to have five yards.
01:14:37And you see Kevin Johnson's stubble right there at the top.
01:14:40Pushed down.
01:14:41There's Buckley to make the interception.
01:14:43That's why Tim Couch is so upset.
01:14:45Second down, ten at the 39.
01:14:47Brady pump-faking to the sideline.
01:14:50Brady pump-faking to the sideline.
01:14:55Guess who?
01:14:56Terry Glenn with a 21-yard gain.
01:15:00And he knew it was just a matter of time.
01:15:02And when you play against the speed of Terry Glenn,
01:15:04you've got to give him some off coverage.
01:15:06Look at the cushion that he's got.
01:15:08You've got to think deep.
01:15:09When you spin a quarterback's shoulders around like that,
01:15:11you've got him beat every single time.
01:15:14Did he get both feet involved?
01:15:15Anthony Henry.
01:15:16Yes, he did.
01:15:19He D.I.D. did, Gus, as a matter of fact.
01:15:24First down, ten at the 40.
01:15:27You've got to be from New England to get that joke.
01:15:29Oh, my goodness.
01:15:30Here comes some blitz.
01:15:38Well, to explain it to you folks, let's take a look back.
01:15:41Terry Glenn interviewed on a local television show.
01:15:45And he was asked a couple of questions.
01:15:47And this is how he responded.
01:15:50Do you want to play for the New England Patriots?
01:15:53I did.
01:15:54Did?
01:15:55I did.
01:15:56D.I.D., I did.
01:15:57That means pass.
01:15:58It does.
01:15:59And as of right now, I don't see me playing here next year.
01:16:03And I don't see myself being in a Patriot uniform.
01:16:06I know I'm bothered by a hamstring right now.
01:16:08And I'm not getting paid.
01:16:09So you do the math.
01:16:12If you were getting paid, would that hamstring get better?
01:16:14Let me ask you that question.
01:16:15I don't know.
01:16:16I really don't know.
01:16:17I can't say that.
01:16:18I don't know.
01:16:20Well, Gus, I've done the math.
01:16:22And down the playoff stretch, this team is so much more potent with Terry Glenn.
01:16:27And if he can keep those hamstrings healthy,
01:16:29he can't overuse them here in these first couple games.
01:16:31But I really tip my hat to Coach Bill Belichick.
01:16:34He hasn't overreacted in this situation all year.
01:16:36He's done what he's had to do.
01:16:38And now you have Terry Glenn.
01:16:40And I think some of these guys on the Patriots got to come alongside Terry Glenn.
01:16:44Bill, I haven't been a big fan of Terry Glenn off the field.
01:16:47I love what he does on the field.
01:16:49He can really make some things happen.
01:16:51But he's got to pull it together.
01:16:53If he chooses not to even talk to the media the rest of the year, that would be phenomenal.
01:16:57For him, for the team, just go out, Terry, and let your playing do the talking.
01:17:02And you're going to really help this team down the stretch.
01:17:04And you could end up having a Super Bowl ring on your finger.
01:17:09First down and 15.
01:17:11At the 45.
01:17:13Twenty-three seconds to go here in the first half of play.
01:17:23Brady.
01:17:27Stands in there, throws a strike.
01:17:30At the 30-yard line, Roy Brown.
01:17:33And New England calls a timeout.
01:17:35A gain of 15.
01:17:38And a lot of people are going to credit Tom Brady standing in the pocket,
01:17:42waiting for his receiver to get open and fire that ball.
01:17:45But a big part of that reception is Troy Brown, his veteran knowledge.
01:17:48Watch him come back to this ball.
01:17:51When there's a big cushion there, you've got to come back.
01:17:54See him drive back, even though he's in front of the defender,
01:17:58uses his body to shield the defender between him and the ball.
01:18:02That's so important.
01:18:03We see so many young receivers just waiting for the ball to come to them.
01:18:07But you have to not only give Brady credit and Brown credit,
01:18:10but look how much time Tom Brady has to throw the football.
01:18:14The offensive line of Leight, Compton, Woody, and Druzy,
01:18:17and Robinson-Randall doing an outstanding job past protecting for Tom Brady.
01:18:23Well, Damien Woody is the anchor,
01:18:24and he's a center that should be going to the Pro Bowl.
01:18:26But I really like Mike Compton.
01:18:28We haven't talked a lot about him this year.
01:18:30He comes over from the Lions, the black and blue division.
01:18:33I think he's brought an attitude to this offensive line.
01:18:35There's continuity, there's chemistry, and you know what?
01:18:38There's a run game, and that's it.
01:18:40It's physical smash mouth.
01:18:42We always use that term.
01:18:43It's overused.
01:18:44But that's exactly what they've done.
01:18:46Great play action group, and it's really helped Tom Brady
01:18:49and his leadership as well as helped the offensive line.
01:18:52Second down and one.
01:18:53Here comes the blitz.
01:18:55Low snap picked up by Brady.
01:18:57Gets rid of it.
01:18:58Out of bounds goes Terry Glenn.
01:19:03And the clock stops with eight seconds, an 11-yard gain.
01:19:08And they will bring on Adam Vinatieri.
01:19:12Watch Terry Glenn coming out of his break.
01:19:14Now that's not a guy that looks like he's only played one game all season.
01:19:18That's just amazing to me that you can just walk out onto the field
01:19:21and make something happen.
01:19:24Brady under all kinds of pressure.
01:19:27Vinatieri into a tip to 38-yarder.
01:19:29He's hit a 54-yarder earlier today.
01:19:33They get it down.
01:19:34It's up.
01:19:37Perfect.
01:19:42Tom Brady engineering a very successful half-closing drive for the Patriots.
01:19:51And with two seconds to go, New England takes a 20-10 lead.
01:19:56You know, this is part of this new mentality that that man, Bill Belichick,
01:19:59has brought to this team.
01:20:01I don't think last year with a minute something left, they try,
01:20:04they go into the two-minute drill.
01:20:06But when you are aggressive, when you've got some confidence,
01:20:08when you feel like this team can do it,
01:20:10and you've got a quarterback that has the leadership of Tom Brady,
01:20:14you say, hey, let's get this thing rolling.
01:20:16And you've got an extra three points,
01:20:17and that's a huge difference going into halftime.
01:20:19And Vinatieri's been phenomenal this whole season for the Pats.
01:20:25And he's almost automatic at this point.
01:20:31So a 54-yarder and a 38-yarder for Adam Vinatieri.
01:20:36Three seconds to go.
01:20:38As we take a look at the drive, eight plays, covering 50 yards,
01:20:42and they get down the field in a minute at 16.
01:20:45You know what, the other thing about Tom Brady that's been so phenomenal
01:20:49is the way that he puts it on the receivers in stride.
01:20:53He allows them to run with the ball.
01:20:55We talked about Charlie Weiss, the offensive coordinator,
01:20:58loving yards after the catch.
01:21:00That's a big stat for this Pats team.
01:21:02So Vinatieri with the kick picked up by Santiago,
01:21:06and OJ Santiago looking to get out of bounds.
01:21:09He does, but the clock expires.
01:21:12And that is the end of the first half.
01:21:14Tom Brady throws one interception.
01:21:16However, he has the Pats in good shape
01:21:19as they take a 20-10 lead into the locker room.
01:21:23♪♪
01:21:3320-10, New England leads Cleveland at halftime.
01:21:37Now yesterday, my partner,
