00:00:00The New England Patriots on the
00:00:04verge of their first division
00:00:05title in four years if they can
00:00:07beat the Carolina Panthers who
00:00:09have lost 14 consecutive games.
00:00:12Hi everyone.
00:00:13Kevin Harlan alongside the
00:00:14former New England Patriot
00:00:15running back Craig James.
00:00:16Great to have you with us this
00:00:17afternoon.
00:00:18Right now the hottest team in
00:00:19the AFC winning five consecutive
00:00:21games the New England Patriots
00:00:22and one of the hottest players
00:00:23in the league right now is Tom
00:00:24Brady headed to the Pro Bowl.
00:00:26He's completed 64 percent of his
00:00:27passes.
00:00:28He just doesn't make mistakes
00:00:29for a first year guy at
00:00:30starting and Antoine Smith on
00:00:32the ground.
00:00:33Here's the guy averaging four
00:00:34yards a carry because he's so
00:00:36effective on the ground.
00:00:37They don't have problems there
00:00:38with him and they really do a
00:00:39good job.
00:00:40It's a big game for the
00:00:41Patriots who today take on the
00:00:42Panthers.
00:00:46Presentation of the National
00:00:48Football League.
00:00:57Many wrote off the New England
00:00:58Patriots after true blood so
00:01:00sweet to injury coach Bill
00:01:02Belichick turned to an
00:01:03unproven quarterback Tom Brady
00:01:06and a group of men when looked
00:01:07at individually may not seem
00:01:10impressive but Belichick formed
00:01:12a team whose results speak for
00:01:14themselves.
00:01:16Today the New England Patriots
00:01:18can clinch the AFC Eastern
00:01:20Division Championship.
00:01:25The Carolina Panthers look to
00:01:26finish the season as they
00:01:27started with a win for George
00:01:29Seaford.
00:01:49They are expecting freezing
00:01:51rain for the Patriots and
00:01:52Panthers here in Charlotte today
00:01:56once again Kevin Harlan with
00:01:57Craig James the AFC playoff
00:01:59picture is still not complete.
00:02:01And one thing that everybody
00:02:02needs to realize just go out and
00:02:03win your football game for the
00:02:04Patriots.
00:02:05They got to get back on track.
00:02:06They've been off for 15 days.
00:02:07Can they overcome the bye.
00:02:08We'll find out a chilly day in
00:02:15Charlotte.
00:02:16Let's go downstairs to Beasley
00:02:17Reese.
00:02:18All right.
00:02:19Thanks a lot Kevin.
00:02:20It is cold but it's not too
00:02:21cold.
00:02:22It's going to be a good day for
00:02:23football.
00:02:24The New England Patriots as they
00:02:25came out of the field they were
00:02:27chanting championship.
00:02:28The Carolina fans have said wait
00:02:30till next year.
00:02:31But there are so many New
00:02:32England fans here.
00:02:33It's going to feel like a home
00:02:35game for the New England
00:02:36Patriots.
00:02:37And Tom Brady the Brady Bunch.
00:02:39We'll see if they can live up
00:02:40to that championship chant.
00:02:41Back to you.
00:02:42Yeah I tell you B's that Brady
00:02:44Bunch business has to fall in
00:02:45the hands of Antoine Smith.
00:02:46This is a sloppy football field.
00:02:49Todd Sauerbrun's kickoff going
00:02:51short.
00:02:52Patrick Cash runs outside and
00:02:56being chased by Broughton and
00:02:58Anderson and Sauerbrun.
00:02:59The guy that kicked the ball off
00:03:01knocks him out of bounds and
00:03:02down.
00:03:03He went hard after a return of
00:03:05thirty three yards and he is
00:03:08still down.
00:03:10He's got a touchdown pass a
00:03:12couple of weeks ago on that
00:03:14Saturday game against Miami.
00:03:15You know what this is not a late
00:03:17game.
00:03:18He just got hit.
00:03:19And once he got over on that
00:03:20carpet it is very slippery down
00:03:21there.
00:03:22They they had a tarp on top of
00:03:23the field and they took it off
00:03:24before the game.
00:03:25But I'm telling you it's a very
00:03:26slippery field and his footing
00:03:28right there and being so sure
00:03:30footed is what allowed him to
00:03:31get to the outside on the forty
00:03:33six yard line.
00:03:34He's up now first in 10.
00:03:35Antoine Smith in the backfield
00:03:36with the pitch is a block by
00:03:38winning but a nice tackle made
00:03:39by Jay Williams and Mike Rucker
00:03:41on that defensive line for the
00:03:44Carolina Panthers a loss of four
00:03:46to play as you take a look at
00:03:48pro bowler Tom Brady just a good
00:03:51person to be around.
00:03:52You enjoy it.
00:03:53You're happy for him.
00:03:54You know regardless fans around
00:03:55the country don't really know
00:03:56who this guy is yet.
00:03:57New England knows who he is but
00:03:59he's establishing a reputation
00:04:00as a guy who just doesn't make
00:04:02mistakes and mistakes is usually
00:04:03what hurts a football team.
00:04:05Second down and 14 from the 42
00:04:08Smith still in the backfield
00:04:09will get the pitch the thousand
00:04:10yard gainer with some nice
00:04:12weaving up past the 50 and down
00:04:15to forty nine brought down by
00:04:17Hitchcock and Deion Grant a gain
00:04:22of nine for the New England
00:04:25Patriots today on their
00:04:26offensive line.
00:04:27Matt Light Compton Woody and
00:04:30Trucy and Robinson Randall in
00:04:33the backfield.
00:04:34Smith and Edwards receivers
00:04:36Brown and Patton the tight end
00:04:38is Rod Rutledge third down and
00:04:42forty nine on third and five he
00:04:56picks up six round with his 96
00:05:00reception which ties a single
00:05:02season record in ninety four by
00:05:04then tight end Ben Coates line
00:05:06for Carolina Williams Buckner
00:05:08Jenkins and Michael Rucker.
00:05:11Linebackers Lester Towns flanked
00:05:13by Dan Morgan and Darren
00:05:14Hambrick the ex-cowboy
00:05:17secondary Hitchcock Grant
00:05:18Minter and Evan.
00:05:19It is a first down for New
00:05:21England on the first drive of
00:05:22the game for the Carolina 43
00:05:25outside quickly to Brown
00:05:27jousting with Hitchcock and
00:05:29belted by Mike Minter number 30
00:05:31that is the leading tackler for
00:05:33the Carolina Panthers the
00:05:35defensive Carolina number thirty
00:05:36one their offense number thirty
00:05:38one in the NFL.
00:05:40I think a real indication as to
00:05:41what the Carolina Panthers
00:05:43mindset is is being answered
00:05:44here right now by the way they
00:05:45get to the ball carrier.
00:05:47You're seeing the Panthers
00:05:48defense getting to New England
00:05:50guys who have the football and
00:05:51you know so all these cars
00:05:52running in the parking lot
00:05:53business about them leaving for
00:05:54the offseason.
00:05:55You can probably forget about
00:05:56that right now.
00:05:57Second down five on the 30.
00:05:58What a catch by David Patton
00:06:00sliding his way to the 26 yard
00:06:02line.
00:06:03Hits up a first down a gain of
00:06:0512 and so far the Patriots
00:06:08moving with ease downfield.
00:06:10Yes.
00:06:11All that business about them
00:06:12not being leaving early in
00:06:13Carolina and the bye week for
00:06:14the pay for the Patriots.
00:06:15Forget about that being a
00:06:16problem.
00:06:17New England showing up
00:06:18executing extremely well right
00:06:19now.
00:06:20Very crisp with the way they're
00:06:21running their offense.
00:06:22Numbers on the X Brown and X
00:06:25giant.
00:06:26First in 10 and 12.
00:06:28The X Bill weaving his way down
00:06:30to the 21 yard line and picking
00:06:32up about four yards on the play
00:06:34of 1000 yard rusher for the
00:06:36New England Patriots.
00:06:38You know you talk about the
00:06:39last three seasons.
00:06:40These you know these are two
00:06:41seasons right here.
00:06:42That's two.
00:06:43Look what he's done in one
00:06:44season with New England and the
00:06:46touchdowns in the production.
00:06:47But it's a guy he's a big back.
00:06:49They wanted a big powerful back
00:06:51and they got that in the
00:06:52offseason.
00:06:53They were very fortunate to get
00:06:54Antoine Smith an ingredient that
00:06:56New England's been missing for a
00:06:57while.
00:06:58Two tight ends around second
00:06:59down six.
00:07:00Twenty one of Carolina's seventh
00:07:01play in the dry.
00:07:02Brady.
00:07:03Twisting.
00:07:04Here comes Jenkins.
00:07:05There goes the pass.
00:07:06It's caught by Edwards.
00:07:07Humbling inside the 10.
00:07:08Tackled by Morgan at the five.
00:07:09And New England's got it first
00:07:10and goal to go.
00:07:11A 17 yard pick up through the
00:07:12air for the versatile fullback
00:07:13Mark Edwards.
00:07:14Really good execution of showing
00:07:15to the left side.
00:07:16Watch how patient he is in
00:07:17selling it to the left side.
00:07:18Brady looks hard left to Antoine
00:07:19Smith.
00:07:20Allows the line to get out in
00:07:21front of Mark Edwards.
00:07:22And then Edwards being a smart
00:07:23bullnose.
00:07:24Guy like he is.
00:07:25Looks for that end zone.
00:07:26No dancing around.
00:07:27Especially on slippery turf
00:07:28here.
00:07:29Just get north and south.
00:07:30Empty backfield.
00:07:31Take a look at Edwards.
00:07:32He becomes a receiver on one
00:07:33side.
00:07:34Antoine Smith the receiver on
00:07:35the other side.
00:07:36Five receivers in all.
00:07:37First and goal at the five.
00:07:38The snap from Compton.
00:07:39He goes outside.
00:07:40It's incomplete as he was in
00:07:41there.
00:07:42And he's got it.
00:07:43He's got it.
00:07:44He's got it.
00:07:45He's got it.
00:07:46He's got it.
00:07:47He's got it.
00:07:48He's got it.
00:07:49He's got it.
00:07:50He's got it.
00:07:51He's got it.
00:07:52He's got it.
00:07:53It's incomplete as he was
00:07:54aiming for Troy Brown.
00:07:55Damien Woody snaps when Brady is
00:07:58under him.
00:07:59Mike Compton moves over from
00:08:00guard on shotgun snaps.
00:08:02It's second down and goal.
00:08:04One of the assets they have in
00:08:06New England is the multiple
00:08:07formations they use.
00:08:08They really do get themselves
00:08:09vanilla defensive looks because
00:08:11they move around so much with
00:08:13their personnel groupings that
00:08:14you almost are forced on defense
00:08:16to get vanilla.
00:08:17Smith to the backfield.
00:08:19Second down goal at the five.
00:08:22Good job to Smith, the block by Edwards, cutting it.
00:08:24Oh, what a nice block on the play by Mike Compton,
00:08:28who opens up the gate, a five-yard touchdown run
00:08:31with a flag down at the six.
00:08:36And it's against Norrington, that'll wipe it away,
00:08:39and gives up a pretty good-looking block
00:08:40by Compton, the left guard.
00:08:45Holding, number 71, offense, it's a 10-yard penalty,
00:08:50remains second down.
00:08:52Well, there is no 71, I assume he means 77, Compton.
00:08:56Yeah, he has to be talking about Compton,
00:08:57especially when Compton's walking back over there.
00:09:00You got that certain walk when you're guilty.
00:09:04You just got it, man, it's like, I didn't take the candy.
00:09:07How about the guy, though?
00:09:08Compton comes in here with the shade visor on,
00:09:10a foggy day, a little freezing rain.
00:09:13I wonder how much he can see.
00:09:15Right down to efficiency for both these teams.
00:09:18Second goal at the 15-yard line, Smith in the backfield.
00:09:24And Brady, great time, good block by Compton again,
00:09:28looking for the end zone, incomplete.
00:09:30Fred Corman was in his sights,
00:09:31the guy they called up off the practice squad.
00:09:35Back in November, it is third and goal at the 15-yard line
00:09:39on the game's opening drive.
00:09:43I think Minter showed up today, what do you think?
00:09:45Yes, he's not, his car's not running in the parking lot.
00:09:49Patrick Pass and J.R. Redman have checked in
00:09:53for New England, third and goal at the 15,
00:09:5610th play of the drive.
00:10:05It's Brown in motion to the bottom of her screen.
00:10:09Outside it goes, J.R. Redman,
00:10:11getting a block from Patrick Pass,
00:10:13and a block downfield from Patton is down to the three.
00:10:18It's now fourth down and goal,
00:10:21and for the New England Patriots,
00:10:23instead of going for six, they're gonna try for three,
00:10:25and so Belichick playing a conservative.
00:10:28Carolina's defense does their job
00:10:30and keeps New England out of the end zone.
00:10:32Well, you got a lot of room you can work with here,
00:10:33but I like how they get Redman over to the right side there.
00:10:36They cross Patton, he comes over.
00:10:37It's almost like a little screen, in effect,
00:10:39getting to the outside.
00:10:41A nice job of blocking on the outside by Patrick Pass
00:10:44and J.R. Redman trying to get to the end zone,
00:10:46but good execution all in all by both units in this drive.
00:10:5020-yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri.
00:10:53On the road, he has hit 11 straight.
00:10:55Overall, he has hit six straight,
00:10:58may get seven in a row overall,
00:11:01and another one for him.
00:11:0320-yard field goal on the game's opening drive,
00:11:05the Patriots 3-0.
00:11:10Kevin Harlan and Craig James and Beasley Reese,
00:11:12you take a look at the guard, Mike Compton,
00:11:14who was called for a penalty on a touchdown run
00:11:16by Antoine Smith.
00:11:18They had to call it back,
00:11:19and so they had to settle for three from Vinatieri
00:11:23from 20 yards away,
00:11:25and now the ensuing kickoff for the New England Patriots.
00:11:28The number one kickoff man in the NFL from the nine,
00:11:31that's co-bowler Steve Smith,
00:11:32who is a rookie and brought down by Tebucky Jones
00:11:35at about the 24, 17-yard return.
00:11:40So we'll get our first look at the Heisman Trophy winner.
00:11:45The NFL on CBS is sponsored by the all-new Honda CR-V,
00:11:51a vehicle designed for your adventures in reality.
00:11:54NextEv, NextEv, how business gets done.
00:11:59And by IBM, taking e-business and your business
00:12:03to the next level.
00:12:08Patriots, who are technically in first place
00:12:10in the AFC East, although tied with Miami,
00:12:14can win the division today,
00:12:17if they win today from the 25 after the kickoff
00:12:20and after the Vinatieri field goal, first down and 10.
00:12:24Chris Winkie hands off to the former Pittsburgh Steeler,
00:12:27Richard Huntley, who was brought down by Brandon Mitchell.
00:12:32In the three on the play, second down and seven,
00:12:3529-year-old rookie Chris Winkie.
00:12:38You know, the guy has a lot of passing yards this season.
00:12:40He's had some success, and I asked George Seaford,
00:12:43is this guy capable of being a good quarterback long-term?
00:12:46Seaford really believes in him.
00:12:49Stusey, Nesbit, Mitchell, James, and Terry
00:12:51on the offensive line for Carolina, second down and seven.
00:12:56With the ball at the 28, quickly outside it goes,
00:13:00and the pass is lassoed by Smith,
00:13:02brought down by Ty Law,
00:13:04and close to a Carolina first down at the 35.
00:13:08It's a gain of eight on the play as you take a look
00:13:11at one of those talked-about rookies.
00:13:13He's out of Utah, 5'9", Steve Smith.
00:13:15That's the offensive line again.
00:13:17Stusey and Terry anchoring the tackle positions
00:13:20in the backfield.
00:13:21Richard Huntley with Brad Hoover,
00:13:23Patrick Jeffers along with Donald Hayes, the receivers.
00:13:26Mangum is the tight end.
00:13:28Three of the top four Carolina receivers
00:13:31out and injured today,
00:13:33including Pro Bowl tight end Wesley Walls.
00:13:35First and 10, here comes Anthony Pleasant.
00:13:38There goes the pass over the head,
00:13:40whistling away and out of bounds.
00:13:42Patrick Jeffers was in his sights.
00:13:45Second down and 10.
00:13:48Little England Patriots at the 24th rate of defense
00:13:50in the NFL, Hamilton, Mitchell, Seymour,
00:13:52the rookie, and Anthony Pleasant.
00:13:55Linebackers for New England,
00:13:56Bruschi with Grable on one side
00:13:58and the veteran Roman Pfeiffer on the other.
00:14:01And the secondary corners, Law and Smith,
00:14:04hard-hitting safeties, Jones and Malloy.
00:14:07Second down and 10 from the 35.
00:14:09Pitch out to Huntley, a block by Hoover,
00:14:12running outside.
00:14:13And up two from the 44-yard line,
00:14:15about a yard shy of a first down
00:14:17on a gain of eight yards by Richard Huntley,
00:14:20who in Atlanta backed up Jamal Anderson,
00:14:23who in Pittsburgh backed up the bust Jerome Bettis.
00:14:25Here he becomes a starting running back.
00:14:27And they are concerned because the guy does have some speed.
00:14:30He's got some talent.
00:14:31He's got good vision.
00:14:32He can move, get around the corner.
00:14:33225 pounds is a load coming around the corner.
00:14:37And that particular play there,
00:14:38Teddy Bruschi underestimated,
00:14:41really his speed.
00:14:41He took the inside angle.
00:14:43He should have gone around the corner.
00:14:44Third down and two, Carolina at the 44.
00:14:50Empty backfield, Hoover goes in motion.
00:14:53Wynke fires a goal, intercepted on the play.
00:14:56It's picked off by Ty Law.
00:14:58And he'll be in a foot race with Steve Smith
00:15:00into the end zone.
00:15:02His second touchdown on an interception this season.
00:15:08The fifth of his career.
00:15:14When it's third and that's short,
00:15:15here's one of the problems
00:15:16of not having a consistent ground game.
00:15:18They got to throw the football
00:15:19and this is a bad thing that happens
00:15:21when you throw the football.
00:15:22Ty Law sneaks inside, Smith's on the outside.
00:15:24A lack of communication
00:15:26between the quarterback and the wide receiver,
00:15:27Bobby Smith.
00:15:28Outside, a lack of communication
00:15:30between the quarterback and the wide receiver.
00:15:31Bottom line, Wynke is a rookie and makes mistakes.
00:15:35But I think they should have run the football
00:15:37and not had that kind of mistake from him.
00:15:39They put him in a bad position there.
00:15:41The 17th interception for Chris Wynke,
00:15:44the extra point good by Minotieri.
00:15:52Law's made a living making big plays.
00:15:54The law rules out there on the outside
00:15:56telling Mr. Wynke, watch where you put it in the air.
00:16:03Carolina coach George Seifert on the hot seat.
00:16:05Rumors abounding here that Steve Spurrier
00:16:07may take his place as early as tomorrow.
00:16:09The ensuing kickoff after the Ty Law interception
00:16:13for a touchdown.
00:16:14Steve Smith grabbed and brought down
00:16:16on the play by Gerard Cherry.
00:16:20A return of 12 yards.
00:16:23You know what?
00:16:24There's pressure from the inside, first of all.
00:16:25He gets pressure on him in here.
00:16:27Law's gonna sneak back but roll back inside on a cover too.
00:16:30And because of that, there's somebody in the flat.
00:16:32And I don't think Wynke really had time
00:16:34to see that and feel it.
00:16:35Law moved back and then rolled back into his cover too there
00:16:38and fools Wynke, but the pressure on the inside.
00:16:41They don't give up a lot of sacks
00:16:42because Wynke gets rid of it quick.
00:16:44Well, that's a mistake,
00:16:45getting rid of it that quick that time.
00:16:46Stanley Hood, Wynke.
00:16:48Yes, sir.
00:16:49From the 26th, first down and 10.
00:16:52And here comes Wynke throwing outside
00:16:55and it's tipped and intercepted here by Otis Smith
00:16:58and that's returned for a touchdown.
00:17:00Can you believe it?
00:17:02And a flag is down on the play at the 27.
00:17:15I think New England's gonna be called
00:17:16for holding during the return.
00:17:21Well, not going like the old Panthers thought
00:17:37they wanted this thing to start out with.
00:17:42If they continue to work it on the field now,
00:17:46they're waving it off and it's Carolina's ball,
00:17:50but we have not got any word from Tom White until now.
00:17:53After the interception and during the return,
00:17:56holding number 26, New England.
00:18:00It's a 10 yard penalty.
00:18:02It's a first down for New England.
00:18:04Matt Stevens is 26.
00:18:06Otis Smith, the veteran is robbed of the touchdown,
00:18:10but does get the interception.
00:18:11Yeah, and again, here's a throw here
00:18:13that comes to the outside,
00:18:14gets deflected at the line of scrimmage here.
00:18:16They come from the outside.
00:18:17The ball's tipped on the outside.
00:18:19He can't come up with it.
00:18:20Smith makes the interception,
00:18:22but it's all again, a function of Donald Hayes, 81,
00:18:24not being able to make the grab.
00:18:26They are just out of sync here.
00:18:28You see his footwork there,
00:18:29winky, not real sure of where he wants to go with the ball.
00:18:32He's indecisive right now and that's costing him.
00:18:35So at the 34 yard line after the Smith interception,
00:18:37it's an end around.
00:18:38Smith gives it to Troy Brown.
00:18:39Brady with the block and he's in the 30 yard line.
00:18:42Brought down by Lester Towns.
00:18:44It's a gain of four, setting up second down and six.
00:18:47Brady is 6'4 and over 225 pounds.
00:18:51I mean, he looks like a tight end.
00:18:53He's a walker as much as a quarterback.
00:18:56Yeah, but he's thin, you know?
00:18:58Either that or today's guys
00:18:59wearing these baggy blue jeans around,
00:19:01you know, you never know what-
00:19:02Like Becky did yesterday.
00:19:02Yeah, you know, it's like they're hanging
00:19:04barely on your fanny.
00:19:09Second down and six from the 30.
00:19:11And John Smith diving ahead to the 27 yard line
00:19:15and picking up three.
00:19:17Chris Jenkins brings him down along with Dan Morgan.
00:19:20Third down now, coming up,
00:19:22we're down to about three.
00:19:24Let's take a look at Chris Winkie
00:19:25who's thrown two interceptions already
00:19:27in this game for Carolina.
00:19:28And it really does come down to being indecisive.
00:19:31You see his footwork or lack of,
00:19:32how he's moving around.
00:19:33He's not sure where he's supposed to go.
00:19:35New England came out that last time.
00:19:37They had four linebackers instead of three.
00:19:39They changed things up and that's creating
00:19:41a lot of question marks in Winkie's mind.
00:19:43Joe right there at the backfield,
00:19:4427 yard line, third and three.
00:19:47Right to the call, Dan Morgan, the rookie,
00:19:48wraps him up and brings him down at the 26 yard line.
00:19:56Now it'll be fourth down and about two and a half
00:20:01perhaps to go and Bill Belichick with the decision.
00:20:03And it looks like it's to go for it on fourth and two.
00:20:06Yeah, you know, when they put those arms up
00:20:07like that muscle man, that's called tough formation.
00:20:10Bring it in, let's just go for it.
00:20:12Dan Morgan though, who made that play
00:20:14one of the few bright spots that they have right now
00:20:17going for him.
00:20:18Morgan is a guy they feel like they can work with
00:20:20and build around on that defense.
00:20:22Smith is back in, fourth down and two,
00:20:26outside the Carolina 25.
00:20:28In motion, Kane Rutledge with a dive by Smith.
00:20:32We'll have to see if it's good for the first down
00:20:33and to get to the 24.
00:20:35Walked down by Jenkins and Rucker.
00:20:38As they unravel the pile.
00:20:43And he's got it.
00:20:44It's inside the 24, yeah.
00:20:45I'm already with a hot dog with you on this one.
00:20:47From here, yeah.
00:20:48Huh?
00:20:49Let me make the first call.
00:20:49They got him.
00:20:50Before Tom White made the deal.
00:20:52I love this wham block.
00:20:53Watch, Rutledge comes to the inside, wham.
00:20:55He gets the block, they get north and south.
00:20:57And again, this is the beauty of having Antoine Smith
00:21:00in the backfield.
00:21:01It's a power game.
00:21:02Not a lot of footwork, fancy work.
00:21:04Belichick wanted that and it gives it to him.
00:21:06Belichick wanted that and it gives them an attitude
00:21:08and an opportunity on fourth downs.
00:21:11On the 23, goes down in 10.
00:21:13Smith in the backfield and with the handoff.
00:21:16Blocked by Brown, but quite threw it nicely on the play
00:21:20was Jimmy Hitchcock, who makes the stop.
00:21:24He was with New England from 95 through 97,
00:21:27starting with 20 games.
00:21:29So he knows the Patriots, what they're all about.
00:21:32And the defense also knows that if they can get
00:21:35Antoine Smith outside the tackle box
00:21:37and make him go sideline to sideline,
00:21:39that he has, he's nowhere near as effective.
00:21:41This is a downhill runner, tackle to tackle,
00:21:44great tackles, especially with field conditions
00:21:47as they are today.
00:21:48This is a down the middle of the football field.
00:21:50They ought to wear the middle of this field out
00:21:51before it's over.
00:21:5221 yard line, second down and eight.
00:21:56Redmond in the backfield passes a receiver.
00:21:58They jump off a screen pass with the block by Andrewsy.
00:22:01Goes to Redmond, twisting and twirling to the floor.
00:22:07And it's a first down.
00:22:08A game of 17 yards on the play.
00:22:11Joe Andrewsy with the nice block.
00:22:14And open up things for Redmond.
00:22:15First and goal, New England.
00:22:17Yeah, you know what?
00:22:18This is a nice compliment here.
00:22:19You see Compton and Woody in the offensive line
00:22:21get out there.
00:22:22Compton right there on the backside,
00:22:23probably gets away with an illegal block
00:22:24in the back right here.
00:22:26Woody and these guys down the field,
00:22:27blocking hard running by J.R. Redmond.
00:22:30A nice job of coordination in the timing of this offense.
00:22:34You see the Patriots getting down the field.
00:22:36Joe Andrewsy, one of those guys leading the blocks.
00:22:38And J.R. Redmond, a pretty good compliment
00:22:40to the power guy in Antoine Smith.
00:22:42Richard Seymour in the backfield.
00:22:43First and goal at the fourth.
00:22:45And here comes Smith, submarineing to the two.
00:22:48Brought down by Towns on a gain of two.
00:22:50Yeah, they bring in the rookie defensive lineman
00:22:52who is a starter, Richard Seymour,
00:22:55to be the lead blocker on certain situations.
00:22:57Like this right here.
00:22:58Ooh, that's a lot of poundage.
00:23:00You know, you're talking about bringing some meat up in there.
00:23:03Dan Morgan, linebacker with Panthers,
00:23:05said we have to take away the cutback of Antoine Smith.
00:23:08He's a smart football player, this young man.
00:23:10I like him.
00:23:11I like what he does out there.
00:23:12And he's smart and knowing to watch that cutback
00:23:15and the cutback with power.
00:23:16Now Seymour becomes a tight end.
00:23:18Second goal at the two.
00:23:20Rutledge with the block for Edwards,
00:23:22who is wrapped up by Doug Evans and no gain on the play.
00:23:26Doug Evans, 33, the ex-Green Bay Packer.
00:23:30Well, last time the Patriots were in this territory
00:23:33on offense, they had to settle for three
00:23:35after there was a penalty on Mike Compton,
00:23:37the guard wiping out a touchdown run by Harris.
00:23:39Yeah, this is designed with Rutledge coming in here.
00:23:41He's gonna wham.
00:23:42He's gotta stay this side of it.
00:23:44Edwards goes the other way.
00:23:45He goes on the other side of the wham.
00:23:46The play is back to the inside.
00:23:48You can't go outside where the wham block's occurring.
00:23:52Seymour in the backfield again.
00:23:53Third goal at the two.
00:23:56And again, they go to Antoine Smith
00:23:57at the pile, push him past.
00:24:00Looks like he's short again, just inside the one.
00:24:09So, it's once again, decision time
00:24:12for coach Bill Belichick,
00:24:13who probably has done his masterful job,
00:24:16as we said, to begin the game
00:24:18in reconstructing this team
00:24:20from last year's five and 11 mark
00:24:22to now 10 and five this year.
00:24:24The number one thing Belichick has done, in my mind,
00:24:26is that he's had discipline with guys like Terry Glynn.
00:24:30He's been consistent.
00:24:31He's been hard-nosed, old-fashioned leadership,
00:24:34and it's worked for him.
00:24:35Fourth and goal at the one, Seymour the block.
00:24:38A fumble on the play, and it's loose.
00:24:40And looks to be recovered by Carolina.
00:24:44Have the New England, yes, they have.
00:24:45The New England Patriots have again
00:24:48given up a great possibility to score in the red zone.
00:24:55And this time they've fumbled away,
00:24:56as Smith fumbles for the fourth time this season.
00:25:00You know, it's the old hat right on the football.
00:25:02He gets hit right as he's coming
00:25:03across the line of scrimmage.
00:25:05The ball goes down, and for the Carolina Panthers,
00:25:08one of those rare breaks goes their way.
00:25:15The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Acura MDX.
00:25:19Taking the SUV to a place it's never been before.
00:25:23And by Dr. Pepper and your local Dr. Pepper bottler.
00:25:26Be you, nothing's better.
00:25:28Dr. Pepper.
00:25:32Well, they say can'ts have nine lives,
00:25:34and New England has seen that Carolina's burned a couple.
00:25:36Antoine Smith just fumbling third time
00:25:38in the red zone this year.
00:25:41And so on that turnover,
00:25:42after the Otis Smith interception,
00:25:44first and 10 from the line.
00:25:46Winky hands off to Huntley with the block,
00:25:48and O'Reilly accelerates past the big team
00:25:51to the 18-yard line.
00:25:53Brought down by Loyer-Malloy
00:25:55after a 17-yard run by Richard Huntley.
00:26:00You know what?
00:26:01That's what you think third and one while ago
00:26:02when he throws the interception for the touchdown.
00:26:04I mean, that makes,
00:26:05those are things that just make you scratch your head.
00:26:07Like, why didn't they run the ball like that
00:26:09when they had third and one?
00:26:12Winky's already thrown two interceptions today.
00:26:14One returned for a touchdown.
00:26:16It could have been two returned for a touchdown,
00:26:18but a penalty called the second one back.
00:26:20Amazing first and 10, Huntley again.
00:26:22Running outside and caught as it crosses
00:26:25the 30-yard line by Bruschi and Roman Pfeiffer.
00:26:29A gain of 13 yards on the heels of a 17-yard gain
00:26:34for Richard Huntley.
00:26:35So New England today has had a touchdown run
00:26:37called back because of a penalty.
00:26:40They've had a touchdown interception by Otis Smith
00:26:43called back because of a penalty.
00:26:44They've been in the red zone twice,
00:26:46and they've had to settle for only one score.
00:26:50And that was a field goal.
00:26:51Ty Law returned an interception for a touchdown,
00:26:54thus 10-0 New England.
00:26:56From the 31, first and 10, Huntley has authored this drive.
00:27:01Play action, Huntley blocks Hamilton
00:27:04and goes outside to Hoover, who breaks a tackle
00:27:07and is busted out of bounds by Teddy Bruschi.
00:27:10At the 42, a gain of 11.
00:27:12This team was marooned at their one-yard line
00:27:15a couple plays ago.
00:27:16Now they've had gains of 17, 13, and 11 yards
00:27:20to find some breathing space.
00:27:22Marooned means stranded?
00:27:24For you Texans, yes, that means stranded.
00:27:28They were hunkered down at their one-yard line.
00:27:31It was just some big plays,
00:27:31and the Patriots are trying to figure out,
00:27:33they've gone back to their starting defensive unit,
00:27:34taking Cox and Thompson out with Bruschi in the middle.
00:27:38First and 10, Carolina at their 43.
00:27:41To Huntley, dancing a bit, not much there.
00:27:44Mike Braybill makes the stop after a one-yard gain.
00:27:48A very exciting first quarter.
00:27:51New England on top, 10-0.
00:28:01We're back in Dank, Charlotte.
00:28:03Kevin Harland and Craig James and B. Lee Reese
00:28:06are patrolling the stadium.
00:28:07A wild first quarter, two red zone opportunities
00:28:10for the New England Patriots, only three points.
00:28:14So we begin the second, second down and nine.
00:28:19With the Carolina Panthers at their 44-yard line.
00:28:22First quarter thoughts?
00:28:23First quarter, right now, what I'm watching is
00:28:25the New England Patriots defense.
00:28:27Yeah, more than likely this team wins this football game.
00:28:30Now you start looking at the Patriots,
00:28:31and what can they do long term?
00:28:33They've got a lot of good players.
00:28:34They've got a lot of good players.
00:28:35Now you start looking at the Patriots,
00:28:36and what can they do long term?
00:28:37Playoffs are just around the corner,
00:28:39and giving up big chunks of yards on the ground
00:28:41is not gonna get you very far in the playoffs.
00:28:44First play of the second quarter, second down and nine.
00:28:46Wentley winding up, down the sidelines,
00:28:49going deep for Hayes, broken up beautifully
00:28:51with no yellow on the field by veteran Otis Smith.
00:28:56He's bounced around the league, in fact,
00:28:58on and off the roster for the New England Patriots,
00:29:00but a big play right there,
00:29:01as we check in with Jim Nance in New York.
00:29:04All right, Kevin, the number one seed
00:29:05in the AFC playoffs, all set.
00:29:07It's the Pittsburgh Steelers.
00:29:09However, coming off the loss to the Bengals,
00:29:11now trailing the Browns 7-0,
00:29:13Jamel Weitz scores here in the rain-snow mix
00:29:16there at Pittsburgh.
00:29:177-0 Browns, now let's go back to Kevin and Craig.
00:29:20Thank you very much, Jim.
00:29:21Browns come in at seven and eight,
00:29:23but they're near the bottom
00:29:24in almost every offensive category,
00:29:26so a good sign for them with an early touchdown.
00:29:28Third down and nine.
00:29:30Wentley has to scramble, chased by McGinnis,
00:29:32and the pass downfield,
00:29:33caught by the twisting and turning line receiver,
00:29:35Steve Smith.
00:29:36A penalty flag is down back at the 36.
00:29:40That's a penalty against the Carolina Panthers,
00:29:44wiping out a 16-yard game for coach George Seifert.
00:29:49It's been that kind of season.
00:29:53Personal foul, face mask, number 70.
00:29:57It's a 15-yard penalty, remains third down.
00:30:02Well, Chris Terry getting called for a little face mask,
00:30:05more than likely got out of position,
00:30:06and as soon as he broke the pocket
00:30:08and moved to the right side,
00:30:08Terry had to reach up and do a little bit of holding.
00:30:11Instead of holding jersey, he got a mask.
00:30:13But I like them getting Smith involved.
00:30:15You know what?
00:30:16I mean, they're looking for guys
00:30:17to replace Mohamed, a big play guy.
00:30:20Well, Steve Smith is a talented football player.
00:30:22Get him involved.
00:30:23He's dynamite.
00:30:24He's just a rookie with a great future ahead.
00:30:25Back to the 29 with the penalty.
00:30:27Third down and 24 for Lincoln.
00:30:31Hand off to Huntley.
00:30:32Gigantic hole with the Jumper's block past the 45
00:30:36and moves the pile to the 48-yard line
00:30:39before he is brought down by New England's defense,
00:30:43led by Roman Pfeiffer, and to Bucky Jones,
00:30:47who's put together a nice month of play
00:30:48in the secondary for Belichick's New England Patriots,
00:30:51an 18-yard gain, but short of the first down,
00:30:54had to get to the 47.
00:30:56So now here comes Tom Sauerbrunn to punt
00:30:59his 500th career punt.
00:31:01He leads the league in punting,
00:31:04and he boots this up into the fog.
00:31:07And it's caught by Brown inside the 15-yard line.
00:31:11A 39-yard punt by the best punter in the NFL.
00:31:15And it's timeout.
00:31:19Rainy Charlotte here in the Carolinas
00:31:21and up the East Coast today.
00:31:22Kevin Harland, Craig James, Beasley Reese.
00:31:24Patriots have had two touchdowns called back
00:31:26because of penalty.
00:31:28After the Carolina punt, first down and 10 at the 14
00:31:33for quarterback Tom Rainey.
00:31:35And it goes off to Antoine Smith,
00:31:37who is being tackled by an avalanche of Panthers,
00:31:40including Deion Grant and Mike Minner.
00:31:43It's a gain on the play of six,
00:31:45and setting up second down and four.
00:31:47Next-down halftime is on deck.
00:31:48Jim and the gang scores and highlights
00:31:50in a preview of the Jets' Oakland game.
00:31:53That is huge out of Northern California today.
00:31:56All coming up on the next-down halftime report
00:31:59from New York.
00:32:01Brady throwing today, six of eight.
00:32:04Second down and four from the 20-yard line.
00:32:09Rutledge on the move.
00:32:11Brady winding up, going deep, looking for Pat,
00:32:14and he's got separation, and he can't get the pass.
00:32:18Incomplete, he was a stride for stride
00:32:22with Jimmy Hitchcock on the sideline.
00:32:24Incomplete pass, third down and four.
00:32:27You talk about a guy stretching,
00:32:28at least they hooked up for a 91-yard
00:32:31touchdown reception this season.
00:32:32This is a real stretch player.
00:32:34Troy Brown's a good third-down receiver.
00:32:36He's the guy that makes plays,
00:32:36but there's no question here.
00:32:38Pat has taken off, he's on his horse.
00:32:40Hitchcock better turn and burn
00:32:42because Brady really outthrew him,
00:32:44and that's hard to imagine
00:32:45that he has that strong an arm outthrowing Pat.
00:32:49Redman at the backfield, third down and four from the 20.
00:32:55Inside it goes, leaping catch by Brown.
00:32:58Swarmed under and dropped down.
00:33:00They may have had a first down with the lunge.
00:33:04See where the spot is.
00:33:05Mike Minner was there, Doug Evans.
00:33:07And if this is any indication he's got it with ease,
00:33:10yep, he does, by more than he ought.
00:33:12Third and four, he picks up five.
00:33:15Let's go back to New York and Jim Nance.
00:33:18All right, thank you.
00:33:19Speaking of ease, it's all tied now at Pittsburgh.
00:33:22Tuumatumahafal, need I say more.
00:33:257-7, updating the NFC side.
00:33:28The Bears with a field goal,
00:33:30trying to hold off the Packers today
00:33:32to win that NFC Central.
00:33:33Green Bay up over the Giants,
00:33:35who got on the board with a Hilliard touchdown.
00:33:36Owens has scored twice for the 49ers.
00:33:38Back to you.
00:33:40All right, Jim, thank you very much.
00:33:41On first and 10, it's Antoine Smith,
00:33:44head over heels up to the 27-yard line
00:33:46and a gain of three.
00:33:48Last 1,000-yard rush of the Patriots' head.
00:33:50No, not Craig James.
00:33:53Robert Edwards back in 98.
00:33:54And they really have, they've been looking
00:33:56for a dependable guy to come in here and run the football,
00:33:59and that's why Tom Brady's having so much success.
00:34:01Make no doubt about that, mistake about it at all,
00:34:04because he doesn't have to carry the team with his arm.
00:34:07Second and a long seven at the 26.
00:34:10Brady, nice block by Robinson Randle, outside to go.
00:34:13David has been deflected, it looks so wobbly.
00:34:16Incomplete finish, third and seven coming up.
00:34:19Beasley, what do you have?
00:34:20Well, you know what, guys, I'm walking around here,
00:34:23and no exaggeration, probably 40% of the fans here
00:34:25are in New England gear, from New England.
00:34:28And up 10-0 right now, they're already chanting,
00:34:31let's go Jets.
00:34:32You guys know why.
00:34:33If the Jets beat Oakland, they get a first-round buy.
00:34:36So, so many New England fans here.
00:34:38It sounds almost like a home-thrilled advantage
00:34:40for the Patriots.
00:34:42It's a good crew.
00:34:43It's third down, long seven at the 26.
00:34:48Redman with the block, Brady,
00:34:49it pummels the ball, and it's loose,
00:34:51and he covers it up.
00:34:52Princeton Buckner covers him.
00:34:56And New England has got a punt.
00:35:01And the ball gets slapped out of his hand
00:35:02from the right side.
00:35:03They come with pressure from the top over there,
00:35:05so they shift and make the adjustment.
00:35:06Here they come.
00:35:07Here comes your pressure from the outside right here.
00:35:09He comes in, slaps the ball, Michael Rucker.
00:35:12Rucker, one of the guys who's been dependable,
00:35:13been on the defensive line all season.
00:35:15Rucker, a guy that they truly can build around
00:35:18on the defensive line.
00:35:20You got Morgan at linebacker, Towns at linebacker.
00:35:22There's some players here.
00:35:23Rucker, one of them.
00:35:24Ex-Carolina Panther, current Patriot, Ken Walter,
00:35:28the punt, one of the best hang times in the NFL.
00:35:32Smith, back, and he pummels the ball,
00:35:34and it's picked up on the side by Rashard Anderson.
00:35:37And a 46-yard punt, picked up by number 46.
00:35:41There to save the day for the Panthers,
00:35:43up to the 32-yard line.
00:35:45And we've got a time-out from Charlotte.
00:35:50Not only are Patriot fans good and strong for their team,
00:35:54they're also smart.
00:35:57After the New England punt, first and 10 for Winkie,
00:36:00at the 33, going outside, that ball is out of the reach
00:36:04of running back Richard Humphreys,
00:36:05second down and 10, Bobby Hamilton was there.
00:36:09Two of seven throwing Winkie today with two interceptions.
00:36:12Log on to NFL.com, see why Phil Simms says
00:36:15there's no such thing as backing into the playoffs.
00:36:17If you're in, you're in.
00:36:19Check it out at NFL.com or AmericaOnlineKeywordNFL.com.
00:36:24Yeah, but you can mosey in there and not be on a rhythm.
00:36:27Like, look at the Oakland Raiders.
00:36:28Jeff, there's a couple teams that might mosey in there
00:36:31without some momentum.
00:36:3233, second down and 10, the pitch out to Hunley.
00:36:35Nice block by Terry, he's in the secondary of the Patriots,
00:36:38and finally brought down by Winkie.
00:36:40Patriots, and finally brought down by Pfeiffer and Stevens.
00:36:44Up to the 45 in a first down and a run of 12 yards
00:36:48for Richard Hunley, who has been spectacular today
00:36:51with 72 yards on seven carries.
00:36:54You know what, and here's the guy, here's Bruschi.
00:36:55Watch Bruschi try to make the run
00:36:57to get them around to the outside.
00:36:58Mitchell, 60, gets right inside.
00:36:59Look at this block.
00:37:00He's got two lanes he could go to,
00:37:02but wonderful job of executing
00:37:04and getting Jeff Mitchell to the outside.
00:37:06The Patriots right now just start coming off their blocks.
00:37:08They're getting beat up front.
00:37:10Another five-yard line, first and 10.
00:37:12Hunley again, and why not?
00:37:15This time, though, Hamilton got him,
00:37:17then slipping away is Hunley.
00:37:18A foot race with Smith breaks that tackle.
00:37:22Down the sideline, exceptional running by Richard Hunley.
00:37:26He's in the 30-yard line, picks up 25 yards,
00:37:30and he's already over 100 yards in this game.
00:37:34Single-handedly keeping the Carolina Panthers breathing,
00:37:38up 97 yards officially for today.
00:37:42You know what, there's just not a lot of sickum right now
00:37:45on that Patriots defense.
00:37:46They're just not getting to the ball carrier
00:37:48and not wrapping up, not finishing the play.
00:37:51Outside, Hunley doesn't give up.
00:37:53Nice job of everybody getting out,
00:37:54playing and helping him out,
00:37:55but Hunley's running at will right now and with great ease.
00:37:59Hunley is out.
00:38:01Cooper remains the fullback.
00:38:03First down and 10 from the 30-yard line,
00:38:05Lincoln looking at his options,
00:38:07and he's got plenty of time to throw.
00:38:09Now here comes Pleasant.
00:38:11There goes the pass, and it's incomplete
00:38:13down the side to Patrick Jeffords.
00:38:15Coverage by Ty Long.
00:38:1914 consecutive losses for Carolina coming into today.
00:38:24No, that's an ugly deal, but you know what?
00:38:25It wasn't that long ago
00:38:26when New England did the same thing.
00:38:281990, they had 14 straight losses, too,
00:38:30so Patriots fans certainly can sympathize
00:38:33with what the Panther fans are going through right now,
00:38:36and it can turn around, but this is a young organization.
00:38:39They're young on the field.
00:38:41They're injured, so it's gonna be a long road back.
00:38:44Second down and 10 from the 30.
00:38:46Hunley is back in and gets the pitch.
00:38:49A stoofy block and a block by Hoover
00:38:53and then a gang tackle by Hamilton and Mitchell
00:38:55and company for the New England Patriots
00:38:57for the 29-yard line.
00:38:58It's a gain of about two on the play.
00:39:01Here's Bobby Hamilton.
00:39:06The ex-New York Jet.
00:39:12So the Patriots,
00:39:15the St. George Seaports team,
00:39:16run the ball effectively here in the first half.
00:39:19Yes, they have.
00:39:20You know, it makes you wonder.
00:39:21I'm gonna go back to that third-and-one decision
00:39:22to throw the ball to the flat.
00:39:23They should have run the football.
00:39:25Third down and nine from the 29.
00:39:29Wakey, a stoofy block, and a dunk off the Hunley
00:39:32with open field around.
00:39:34He's inside the 10, down to the five,
00:39:37and brought down by pro bowler Lawyer Malloy.
00:39:41A 23-yard pickup.
00:39:43First and goal, Carolina.
00:39:45You know, this again is recognition on the Patriots' part.
00:39:48A lot of times, the Patriots,
00:39:49they confuse what's happening
00:39:51on the blocking of the offensive line.
00:39:53But at this point here, because of the ground game,
00:39:56the linebacker's not really in the game yet for the Patriots.
00:39:59And Hunley comes sneaking out of the pack there of blockers.
00:40:02He had hung in there in the backfield, chip blocking,
00:40:04snuck out over the middle,
00:40:06and a wonderful execution on their part.
00:40:08Nick Goings is now in for Hunley.
00:40:09First and goal at the six.
00:40:10Goings gets the call, blocked by Hoover,
00:40:14and he twists and turns his way down to the three-yard line.
00:40:18So on this drive by Richard Hunley,
00:40:20finishing up what has been a terrific drive,
00:40:23the New England Patriots have allowed him big yards.
00:40:27But for Carolina, two gains by Hunley over 20 yards
00:40:32for the first time, Craig, in eight quarters,
00:40:36which is unheard of in the NFL.
00:40:39So in other words, they've got to form them
00:40:40dink-and-dunk offenses or two sometimes per trade?
00:40:43That's right.
00:40:44Yeah?
00:40:46Hunley is back in.
00:40:47Second down and goal at the three.
00:40:50Hunley trying to carve his way inside.
00:40:53Hamilton is there with Feinstein.
00:40:56Bruce.
00:41:00Now, third down and goal.
00:41:05Patriots, you know,
00:41:05when you talk about their red zone defense,
00:41:07one of the things they've been able to do
00:41:08is create opportunities and turnovers in the red zone.
00:41:11And when you get a tired running back,
00:41:13and I see them taking out Hunley right now,
00:41:15and that's a smart move because a tired running back
00:41:18in short yardage goal line makes mistakes.
00:41:20Well, you should know.
00:41:21Very smart.
00:41:22You've been in that position before.
00:41:23Yeah, and so, I don't understand it,
00:41:24but so many times, coaches are reluctant
00:41:27to take out their star running back when he gets tired,
00:41:29and they should do it more often.
00:41:30Ninth play of the drive, empty backfield.
00:41:32Third and goal at the three,
00:41:33and Winkie's gonna burn a timeout.
00:41:37Big play coming up for the Carolina Panthers,
00:41:40who are getting shut out 10-0 by New England.
00:41:43The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Chrysler.
00:41:48Drive equals love.
00:41:51Sprint PCS, the clear alternative to cellular.
00:41:55And by Subway, fresh-made sandwiches on fresh-baked bread.
00:41:59Subway, eat fresh.
00:42:04After a Carolina timeout from the three-yard line,
00:42:08third goal, third and goal at the Panthers.
00:42:11Third and goal, third and goal at the three.
00:42:13Empty backfield for Chris Winkie.
00:42:17Winkie can run the ball in,
00:42:19has more rushing touchdowns for a quarterback
00:42:21than anyone in the NFL,
00:42:22but here comes Willie McGinnis,
00:42:24and Joe Powers, and at the 12-yard line,
00:42:29his fifth sack of the season,
00:42:33the 50th of his career,
00:42:34and it couldn't have come at a better time.
00:42:36Yeah, he's on the outside,
00:42:37and they're gonna bring Mangum.
00:42:38He's gonna try to log it
00:42:39so they can roll to the outside with Winkie
00:42:41and move the pocket,
00:42:43but Mangum can't quite get around there.
00:42:44You see 86, Mangum come in there.
00:42:46McGinnis beats him underneath.
00:42:47A poor job of angling by the tight end, Mangum.
00:42:51He missed his assignment there with McGinnis.
00:42:53First sack given up in a couple games by Carolina.
00:42:56A 29-yard field goal try by John Casey,
00:42:59who missed both his tries last week,
00:43:02and he nails this one.
00:43:05So the Patriots' shutout is gone,
00:43:08and Carolina clawing back down by seven.

00:43:25So after the field goal by John Casey,
00:43:28the kickoff by Todd Sauerbrot,
00:43:31and it will be Fulk at the 16-yard line.
00:43:34Kevin Fulk running outside of Pfeiffer block.
00:43:37Fulk demands Stevens block and he's to the 31-yard line.
00:43:4217-yard return.
00:43:45Another look at the New England offense coming up.
00:43:49The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Gateway,
00:43:54where you've got a friend in the business.
00:43:58And by the United States Postal Service.
00:44:01Seven-point game, Patriots on top.
00:44:04Two touchdowns have been called back
00:44:06because of penalties for New England.
00:44:07Two red zone opportunities,
00:44:09only three points for the Patriots.
00:44:10Well, right now, you know,
00:44:11Carolina's weathered the storm.
00:44:13You know, New England's offense
00:44:14has to bail their defense out right now.
00:44:16They need to start tackling and wrapping up in New England.
00:44:18New England's defense has got to get it going on here.
00:44:20Or Carolina at home,
00:44:21you don't want to let the sleeping dog,
00:44:23like, you know, hang around a little bit longer.
00:44:24He'll be finding a milk bone before it's over with.
00:44:26And the Patriots are back in the game.
00:44:28You don't want to let the sleeping dog,
00:44:29like, you know, hang around a little bit longer.
00:44:31He'll be finding a milk bone before it's over with.
00:44:33Weather might be evening the field just a bit.
00:44:36Thompson will snap it, and a shotgun on.
00:44:39First and 10 from the 31.
00:44:40Low snap picked up by Brady.
00:44:42Rips a pass outside, which is caught by Brett Coleman.
00:44:46Only his second catch of the season.
00:44:49And it's a gain of four.
00:44:50He's up to the 35-yard line.
00:44:52Terry Glenn did not make the trip.
00:44:54He was back in New England.
00:44:56An excused absence for a while this week.
00:44:59And, again, there have been several distractions
00:45:02that Bill Belichick has had to deal with this year.
00:45:04And that's why I admire him so much.
00:45:05You know, if it weren't for Dick Duran
00:45:07and how much success he's had in Chicago,
00:45:09I think Belichick would be a good candidate
00:45:10for coach of the year.
00:45:11Second down and six.
00:45:14And the pitch out at the 35 goes for no gain.
00:45:16And Antwon Smith, who has had four 100-yard games
00:45:21this season, but today has fumbled at the one.
00:45:26And, you know, Carolina has allowed
00:45:28seven 100-yard rushers this season.
00:45:30So you think all of that blends together
00:45:32where they're gonna come out here and run the ball.
00:45:33But trying to get around the corners
00:45:35with Antwon Smith is playing right
00:45:37into the hands of Carolina.
00:45:38The interior tackle to tackle is gonna have to get it done
00:45:40by New England on the offensive line.
00:45:43J.R. Redman has checked in.
00:45:47Compton will have the shotgun snap.
00:45:49Third down and six from the 35.
00:45:52Oh, everybody's moving.
00:45:53Here comes Rucker.
00:45:54He's ready to go to whistle.
00:45:57Colts on top of Denver.
00:45:58Highest scoring game, Green Bay and the Giants.
00:46:01You just saw Tennessee on top of Cincinnati.
00:46:04And the same Arizona, Washington.
00:46:06How about Arizona?
00:46:07Dave McGinnis is gonna get his ball club
00:46:09maybe to eight and eight.
00:46:09Wouldn't that be shocking?
00:46:10Yep.
00:46:11The way they started the season.
00:46:13They lost to Detroit.
00:46:15All sides, number 93 defense,
00:46:18unabated to the quarterback.
00:46:19It's a five-yard penalty.
00:46:21Remains third down.
00:46:23All right, Rucker called.
00:46:25Now it becomes third down and one,
00:46:27which is a lot different than it was before,
00:46:29third and six.
00:46:30Another little small item
00:46:31that Tom Brady has in his arsenal,
00:46:33that hard, barking count.
00:46:35You know, a lot of young guys
00:46:36don't think about that kind of stuff.
00:46:38Brady on the quarterback keeper.
00:46:40May have picked up the first downs
00:46:42and tried to pry his way into that defensive line.
00:46:47Let's see where they mark it.
00:46:47He needs to get up past the 41.
00:46:50He gets it easy.
00:46:52So the Patriots trying to put something together
00:46:56for Coach Bill Belichick.
00:46:59The guy that New England, you may recall,
00:47:01going back, gave up a first round draft choice
00:47:03to the Jets so they could sign him.
00:47:07One of the rarer transactions you will see in the NFL.
00:47:144-12 to play here in the second quarter.
00:47:16A timeout has been taken by New England.
00:47:19Brady will have it first and 10 when we come back.
00:47:26Thursday on CBS, this is it, the final episode.
00:47:29Find out who will be voted the ultimate survivor
00:47:32in the dramatic two-hour finale.
00:47:34And stay tuned for a live reunion
00:47:36featuring all 16 survivors together for the first time.
00:47:39Beginning at 8 Eastern, 7 Central, Thursday here on CBS.
00:47:43After the New England timeout, first and 10.
00:47:45And Antoine Smith rumbling down the middle
00:47:48of a 49-yard line in a nine-yard game
00:47:52tackled by Mike Minner in the secondary.
00:47:54Close to a first down.
00:47:56Oh boy, you know, watch this swam block
00:47:57that comes inside here.
00:47:58And he's got to stay to the outside of it.
00:48:00He cuts down.
00:48:02Mark Edwards does a beautiful job of cutting Al Lucas,
00:48:04a defensive tackle, and then Antoine Smith.
00:48:06That's the north-south game I'm looking for.
00:48:08That's what you gotta have if you're New England right now.
00:48:11Second down and one.
00:48:12There's a look at Edwards playing the wingback.
00:48:14And this time Smith's set up the middle
00:48:16and nothing there.
00:48:17Aaron Hamrick, who led the Dallas Cowboys
00:48:19in tackles a season ago, cut this past October.
00:48:23Vacuumed in by Carolina, now starts at linebacker here.
00:48:27You know what?
00:48:27This is the cutback area over here.
00:48:28This is where he has to stay.
00:48:30Don't cut back.
00:48:31There's no cutback there.
00:48:32He's got to stay play side,
00:48:33right up the middle of the field.
00:48:35He's not a dancing back.
00:48:37And I know he's not trying to become a dancing pullback,
00:48:40halfback, but that play right there,
00:48:42understanding down in the distance,
00:48:43using your power straight ahead.
00:48:45That's what he has to accomplish.
00:48:47Third down, long two.
00:48:48Redmond is in, 49-yard line.
00:48:51Brady, with the rush coming on,
00:48:53sets up a screen out of the reach of Redmond.
00:48:55Incomplete pass.
00:48:57So New England's got a punt again.
00:49:01You know, there was a concern among people
00:49:03that watch this team on a daily basis.
00:49:05Is it possibly too much time off this time of the year?
00:49:08Your team's on a roll.
00:49:09You've won five consecutive games.
00:49:11For a developing team like this to be off now
00:49:13for 15 days between games.
00:49:16And not only I believe, statistically,
00:49:18teams coming off a bye week,
00:49:20they just have a hard go of it.
00:49:22They don't win that often.
00:49:23And when you're playing as well as they were,
00:49:26you don't want to take time off.
00:49:27Walter's punt.
00:49:28They're caught, 15-yard line by Steve Smith,
00:49:31the 36-yard route.
00:49:34And Carolina gets it back.
00:49:36Now our NFL poll.
00:49:38Who would you pick as this year's NFL MVP?
00:49:41You see the name, just log on
00:49:42and cast your vote at nfl.com.
00:49:45I'm gonna go Marshall Falk.
00:49:46And knowing you, here's how you do it.
00:49:47You just kind of circle everybody.
00:49:49No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:49:50I'm gonna be different.
00:49:50I'm gonna go with Brett Falk.
00:49:51If he wins today in New York, he's my MVP.
00:49:55Well, they're up right now.
00:49:56They are.
00:49:57I like that at least this season
00:49:58I've accomplished one thing.
00:49:59I don't let you straddle the fence
00:50:00and just circle everybody's name.
00:50:05After the punt by the Patriots,
00:50:07Carolina, 15-yard line, first and 10.
00:50:10Richard Huntley, over 100 yards on the ground,
00:50:12takes it again into the teeth of an Oakland defense.
00:50:15Otis Smith is there along with Bobby Hamilton.
00:50:17Gain of four, spotted at the 18-yard line.
00:50:21How is that field?
00:50:22Let's first of all take a look at this,
00:50:23where they rank last in virtually
00:50:25every significant category in the NFL.
00:50:28And you know, and these aren't far from the bottom.
00:50:30And I guess that's why you say, you know,
00:50:31when you're down and you've lost 14 games in a row,
00:50:34you end up being last in most categories.
00:50:36I'm gonna ask about the field in the second.
00:50:38Second down and six from the 18.
00:50:41Huntley in the backfield,
00:50:42Hayes at the top of your screen in motion.
00:50:44And outside it goes to Richard Huntley.
00:50:46One-on-one with Roman Pfeiffer,
00:50:47the veteran who played it well and brings him down
00:50:50in a gain of about a yard to the 19-yard line.
00:50:52And how is the field today?
00:50:54It's mushy in the sky.
00:50:56Is it mushy down there?
00:50:57I was down there prior to the game,
00:50:58doing the NFL report, the insert for the NFL today.
00:51:01And I'm telling you, it was wet.
00:51:02It was mushy.
00:51:04And that's why I don't think there's gonna be much success
00:51:06that happens outside the hashes.
00:51:09We've reached the two-minute warning.
00:51:15Coming up in the Nextel Halftime Report,
00:51:17Jim, Mike, Randy, and Jerry scores.
00:51:19Highlights, a report from the Jets and Oakland matchup.
00:51:21All next on the Nextel Halftime Report,
00:51:24Kevin Harland, Frank James,
00:51:26and a soaking wet Beasley Reese in Charlotte,
00:51:29third and a long six.
00:51:31If the Patriots win, they win the division.
00:51:34Right now, they are staggering from the 18-yard line.
00:51:37Swing key.
00:51:39Across the middle, and that's caught by Donald Hayes,
00:51:43who leads his way up to the 33 for a first down.
00:51:47It's a gain of 14 on third down and a long six.
00:51:52And this all comes along. Look at the inside.
00:51:54Look how they cross the inside,
00:51:55the pickup, the protections there.
00:51:57Donald Hayes comes across the inside of the field.
00:51:59It's just a little leak route coming across the middle.
00:52:02And that's all a result of this Panthers'
00:52:05offensive line protecting Winkie,
00:52:07giving him time to throw the football.
00:52:08Carolina's got a couple of timeouts.
00:52:1043 to make it the 33-yard line, first and 10.
00:52:13That's good, that's good.
00:52:14Breaks the tackle, then dives ahead to the 40-38-yard line,
00:52:18a gain of four on the play,
00:52:20and the tackle made by Rabel and Carolina.
00:52:26Wilburn, another timeout, so they've got one left.
00:52:30And Wilpa's as well.
00:52:32A big game for Richard Huntley of the Panthers.
00:52:38One of the things that the Patriots
00:52:40are trying to accomplish right now
00:52:41in defense is better tackling.
00:52:42Beasley, you know, you just can't show up at a game
00:52:44and figure in the second quarter
00:52:45you're gonna flip the switch on, can you?
00:52:47No, I think these defenders kind of took the attitude
00:52:50that this Carolina team would eventually give up.
00:52:52It's not happening.
00:52:53They've got to come up and play
00:52:54with some real attitude and tackle.
00:52:56Second down and seven from the 36 for Chris Winkie.
00:53:00Pockets rumbling, he's on the run.
00:53:03Fires a pass, incomplete.
00:53:05He was looking for Steve Smith.
00:53:07Pressure was by McGinnis and Anthony Pleasant.
00:53:11Now it'll be third down and seven.
00:53:14One of the things Tom Brady says
00:53:16is the reason he's successful
00:53:18is that he knows where he's going with the ball.
00:53:20He's decisive.
00:53:21That play right there, Chris Winkie.
00:53:23Winkie got back, had protection,
00:53:24they came on the outside corner,
00:53:26somebody's open, and he just didn't seem like
00:53:28he was confused.
00:53:29Where do I go with the ball?
00:53:30He's five of 12 on the day.
00:53:32Third down and seven.
00:53:3436 yard line.
00:53:41Winkie down the middle and incomplete for Haynes.
00:53:45Incomplete pass, and they got a putt again.
00:53:48Well, it wasn't even close.
00:53:52You lose 14 games in a row,
00:53:53and a lot of that has to fall on the shoulders
00:53:55of a quarterback and a quarterback.
00:53:57It does fall on the shoulders of a quarterback who's young.
00:53:59He doesn't make plays.
00:54:00Sometimes he makes the plays.
00:54:02That time, the protection, again there.
00:54:04And Winkie told us in our meeting,
00:54:05he said, you know what?
00:54:06There are days where I'm just off.
00:54:08You know, I'm just awful.
00:54:09You know, I can't hit anybody, and I know it.
00:54:12And I could tell you right now,
00:54:13if you asked him, he'd probably agree with us.
00:54:15He's off right now.
00:54:16Pro bowler Todd Sauerbrunn launched this to Brown,
00:54:20who will signal for it.
00:54:22There's a lot of a fair catch back at the 19 yard line.
00:54:2545 yard punt.
00:54:28Patriots will have 56 seconds on the clock
00:54:30with which to work in a couple of timeouts.
00:54:32And coming Tuesday, January 15th on CBS.
00:54:36The creator of Jag brings you a new drama
00:54:39that dares you to go inside the Supreme Court.
00:54:43It's first Monday.
00:54:44Don't miss the series premiere Tuesday,
00:54:46January 15th on CBS.
00:54:51That's a pretty good number right there.
00:54:52You know, this team knows how to run a two minute offense.
00:54:55Carolina better be on their toes right here
00:54:56because 56 seconds is a lot of time
00:54:59for a guy who manages a game well like Brady.
00:55:01Compton will snap it.
00:55:02The shotgun Brady.
00:55:0419 yard line.
00:55:05Redman in the backfield.
00:55:06Redman gets the toss.
00:55:07There's one block.
00:55:09Another by Compton.
00:55:10Finally Dan Morgan, the rookie, brings him down
00:55:12after a first down catch and run
00:55:14with a 31 yard line, a gain of 12.
00:55:16Oh, did Joe Andrews get him some?
00:55:18Huh?
00:55:19Put him on defense right now
00:55:20because that dude's out there hitting people.
00:55:2331 yard line, clock at 35 seconds.
00:55:26Two timeouts for New England.
00:55:29Compton snapped again.
00:55:31And Brady fires a pass, which is low and caught by Brown.
00:55:35And for Brown today, after that gain of eight,
00:55:38four catches, he is the all time single season
00:55:41receiving leader in the history
00:55:43of the New England Patriots.
00:55:45Now with 99 catches this year.
00:55:49Not bad.
00:55:50Yet he didn't make the Pro Bowl.
00:55:51He is an alternate, but he did not make it,
00:55:53which is shocking to me.
00:55:54He's as good as there is in the NFL.
00:55:56He's an alternate, you know,
00:55:57and it's a step in that direction.
00:55:59And his teammates really supported.
00:56:00They were disappointed that Troy Brown
00:56:03wasn't allowed to get there.
00:56:04One of the guys who is going is Tom Brady.
00:56:07Brady's talked to us about his mechanics.
00:56:08He's trying to shorten his stride.
00:56:10So when he gets to the back, when he lets the ball go,
00:56:12he's trying to shorten his stride
00:56:14and not have a long, drawn out stride.
00:56:16He's trying to get the same point of release.
00:56:19So as a young quarterback,
00:56:20he's gone beyond getting comfortable with the game plan
00:56:23and what needs to take place.
00:56:24He's really now focusing and honing in
00:56:26on getting better with his mechanics.
00:56:28And to think that he was the number four quarterback
00:56:30last year and back of, of course,
00:56:32the starter Drew Bledsoe,
00:56:34who is hailing hardy and on the sideline, ready to go.
00:56:36But John Freeze, Michael Bishop,
00:56:38and then Brady was number four.
00:56:41And he was kind of a, they said a skinny kid,
00:56:43not an odd mother.
00:56:44He put some weight on in the off season
00:56:45and they started seeing progress and development
00:56:48in the spring quarterback schools.
00:56:50They started seeing what he was doing there.
00:56:51And when you talk about this number right here,
00:56:5364% of your completions to me,
00:56:55that says the guy knows where he's going.
00:56:57He's not screwing up.
00:56:58He only has 10 interceptions on the season
00:56:59to 17 touchdown passes.
00:57:01That's a good ratio.
00:57:03Tom White has stopped the clock.
00:57:06We're going to review the catch and see if indeed
00:57:09Troy Brown was able to lasso the pass from Brady.
00:57:13Well, it seemed like what Brown did was
00:57:17he kind of eased back in,
00:57:18knowing he was going to get hot from the inside.
00:57:21So the question is whether or not
00:57:22they can have conclusive evidence here.
00:57:25Initially, it looks like he had it,
00:57:27you know, full speed looks like he had it.
00:57:32But you see how he laid back down
00:57:33knowing that he was getting ready to get popped,
00:57:35which was smart and aware of where the safety
00:57:37was coming from.
00:57:39There's nothing there yet that would give them
00:57:41enough evidence to overturn the ruling on the field.
00:57:44About 33% of challenges are overturned.
00:57:48We will review the ruling on the field,
00:57:50whether this is a catch or an incomplete pass.
00:57:52I'll tell you there, I saw a little ball hit the ground.
00:57:54That looked like a little bit of grass right there.
00:57:58We continue this talk on Tom Brady.
00:57:59He was a sixth round pick out of Michigan.
00:58:02And we talked about a lot of the obstacles
00:58:04this franchise had to face.
00:58:06Their quarterbacks coach, 45-year-old Dick Rabine,
00:58:09heart attack, passing away during training camp,
00:58:11but it was on his suggestion and his scouting
00:58:15that the team drafted Tom Brady.
00:58:17And once Brady was in the fold last year,
00:58:19the late Dick Rabine worked with this man endlessly.
00:58:22And part of his success is due in part
00:58:25to what Dick Rabine did with him
00:58:28in those very developing days as a New England Patriots.
00:58:32So the success of Brady lingers on
00:58:35because of what Rabine did.
00:58:36And you know who has picked the baton up
00:58:38and carrying it for him now is Tom Brady.
00:58:40And carrying it for him now is Drew Bledsoe,
00:58:43helping to tutor him and mentor for him.
00:58:46An unselfish football player.
00:58:47I promise you, people in New England know this.
00:58:49If Bledsoe had taken a different approach
00:58:52to the way he's handled this situation,
00:58:53this New England Patriots football team
00:58:55wouldn't be playing for the East title today.
00:58:56It would have been disastrous.
00:58:58He took the high road with a lot of class and integrity.
00:59:01And because of that, Brady's been able to play the game.
00:59:04And in regards to that review, I think
00:59:06Tom White's going to reverse this call.
00:59:07I think the ball hit the ground.
00:59:10This is incomplete.
00:59:12It hit the ground before he possessed the ball.
00:59:15It'll be second down.
00:59:17Please reset the game clock to 28 seconds, please.
00:59:22You owe me two hot dogs now, Chiefs.
00:59:23You are right again, man.
00:59:25And I'll eat both of them at halftime.
00:59:27No, you won't.
00:59:28Hot dog, a little ketchup, mustard, and relish.
00:59:32There's a look at Troy Brown.
00:59:35Ninth-year player, a former eighth-round draft choice
00:59:37for the NFL, and he's already taken the single-season record
00:59:42away from Coates.
00:59:43And he went to high school here in the Carolinas.
00:59:45He's from Blacksville, South Carolina,
00:59:48not too far from here, actually.
00:59:51He's playing back home, so to speak,
00:59:54with this New England ball club in this beautiful stadium,
00:59:58which is maybe a third full today.
01:00:03And I was talking with Bob Cramp,
01:00:05the owner, before the game.
01:00:07And he was telling me that if you think this is nice,
01:00:09you can see the brand-new stadium we are building in Foxborough,
01:00:12which has the best sightlines, what NFL people tell me,
01:00:16the best sightlines of any stadium being built right now.
01:00:20There's some gorgeous facilities that's going on around here.
01:00:23Oh, my gosh.
01:00:23Baseball's got them going on, the NBA,
01:00:26a lot of really pretty coliseums being built.
01:00:29And I can't wait to see a game in New England.
01:00:31Well, then, of course, the infrastructure is here.
01:00:33They've got the ownership.
01:00:35The rumors about Steve Spurrier coming to Carolina
01:00:38are red hot in the Carolinas.
01:00:40He used to coach at Duke.
01:00:41He's got relatives in the area.
01:00:43And he has been in Charlotte this past week
01:00:46for some other things aside from Panther football.
01:00:49But with all that being said, George Seifer
01:00:51told us yesterday he wants to come back.
01:00:54He and the ownership were on the same page
01:00:56in really junking what they had before,
01:00:59going very young and trying to get
01:01:01that salary cap and the age of the team back in line.
01:01:04And on top of the youth of this team, they've had injuries.
01:01:06So you add all of that up.
01:01:07And I don't care who the coach is, Spurrier or you
01:01:11can bring any coach you want on this team.
01:01:14If you don't have players, you can't win.
01:01:17Well, I'm not sure why they are discussing anything
01:01:22but the clock.
01:01:22But I assume that is the main consideration right now.
01:01:28And normally.
01:01:31After the completion, remember, the Patriots
01:01:33did take a timeout.
01:01:34And you know what?
01:01:35This is one of the things that the referee has to look for
01:01:38once he's inside the peep tank.
01:01:39There is the clock, too.
01:01:41That's 28 seconds right there.
01:01:42You can see it down here on the bottom is your 27.
01:01:44So they're going to try to make a determination is
01:01:47what should be on the clock.
01:01:52Tom White has had an interesting history with this.
01:01:54He's the guy that got confused on downs, remember,
01:01:57in a game last year in Pittsburgh.
01:01:59And now they're going to call.
01:02:00And this is the right thing to do
01:02:01is call the observer upstairs and have
01:02:03them go over it as well.
01:02:05Well, I'll tell you where they're failing here right now.
01:02:07The system's failing because it's holding the game up.
01:02:09It's extending the game.
01:02:10And they try to get in and out of what's
01:02:12going on when they take instant replay and go to the booth.
01:02:15And again, they reviewed this.
01:02:18It's 28, 27 seconds.
01:02:20It should go to 27 seconds on the scoreboard here.
01:02:2427 seconds left in the half.
01:02:31Getting a little workout, isn't he?
01:02:34He's going to want one of my hot dogs.
01:02:36Can't have it, Tom.
01:02:43Well, last week, Craig, you and I saw the Buffalo
01:02:45Bills beat the Jets.
01:02:46Could Carolina have the same thing
01:02:47in mind over the Patriots today?
01:02:49Stranger things have happened.
01:02:51And we thought we would never see what we saw last week,
01:02:53you and I, in the Meadowlands.
01:02:54And it's a fact.
01:02:56The longer you let this team hang around,
01:02:58the more encouraged they are to play hard through four quarters.
01:03:01And they said they had good practices during the week.
01:03:05Of course, you see they had good practices as part of Arizona
01:03:07last week.
01:03:08And they laid an egg on the field.
01:03:09So this is a team that they will be
01:03:12more motivated in the second half
01:03:14knowing their season is over with.
01:03:16And they get on about the offseason.
01:03:20The ball is placed at the 31-yard line.
01:03:23Second down, 28 seconds.
01:03:27And he's right.
01:03:28I mean, that's exactly what it should be, 28 seconds,
01:03:3031-yard line.
01:03:32And it should be second down and 10.
01:03:33But that should have all happened
01:03:34about three or four minutes ago.
01:03:35Yeah.
01:03:36We don't know what they're doing.
01:03:37Maybe he's got a headache or something.
01:03:39I don't know.
01:03:39I don't know.
01:03:44Second down and 10.
01:03:46Brady winding up, fires a pass, and it's caught at midfield.
01:03:50David Panton on a foot race takes it
01:03:52inside the Carolina 45 to the 44.
01:03:56It's a gain of 25.
01:03:57The clock at 18 seconds.
01:04:00And New England will burn their final timeout.
01:04:04They're not quite in field goal range yet.
01:04:06You know, when he comes across, when David Panton gets
01:04:08to the middle of the field, first of all,
01:04:09there's good protection.
01:04:10The Panthers dropped eight into coverage.
01:04:12Now when they come across the middle of the field,
01:04:13the opening is going to be back in here.
01:04:15There's a void coming to the middle.
01:04:17He's leaking his way back to.
01:04:18The linebackers are much, much shallower than they are.
01:04:21But because of the time to throw the football,
01:04:23they were able to extend the route,
01:04:25get further down the field, allowing Panton to come up.
01:04:27Because Tom Brady put like a shortstop,
01:04:30throwing the ball over to first base.
01:04:31Hop, hop, wham, and let it go.
01:04:34Again in this game, New England has scored twice.
01:04:36A 20-yard field goal from Bennett Terry, a tie law.
01:04:39Touchdown on an interception.
01:04:42But New England, two things are standing out.
01:04:44Twice in the red zone, only three points.
01:04:47And two touchdowns called back today in the first half
01:04:51because of penalty.
01:04:53So at the Carolina 44, no timeouts.
01:04:56First and 10.
01:04:57Look at those linebackers.
01:05:01Griffin in the backfield with Brady.
01:05:03Moves up nicely.
01:05:05Wipers have passed downfield.
01:05:06Intercepted and picked off on the play by Deion Grant
01:05:11with nine seconds remaining.
01:05:13Grant's fourth interception of the season.
01:05:17And the second New England turnover today.
01:05:20Brady tosses his 11th interception of the season.
01:05:26Eight guys drop into coverage.
01:05:27There's a safety in the middle of the field who
01:05:29comes over on the outside.
01:05:31Coleman's there.
01:05:32But a beautiful job coming up, making the interception,
01:05:35making sure you finish the play by Deion Grant,
01:05:37getting it up the sidelines.
01:05:38And obviously for Carolina, stopping an offense
01:05:42that we showed you and told you about that
01:05:43has had a lot of success in a two-minute offense,
01:05:46another confidence builder.
01:05:47Both those interceptions by Brady thrown
01:05:50in Carolina territory.
01:05:5237-yard line, one timeout for Carolina.
01:05:56Blankey winding up, going short underneath.
01:05:58Brought by Hoover, racing out of bounds at the 44.
01:06:02Two seconds remaining.
01:06:04So with no wind, you bring Sauerbrunn
01:06:07in to try a long field goal, or Casey,
01:06:09or you just go to the end zone and take your chances
01:06:12on a Hail Mary toss.
01:06:13I'd like to see an attempt, because it'd be 61 yards
01:06:16if he did it.
01:06:17But I don't think that.
01:06:17Just Hail Mary, throw it up in the end zone,
01:06:19see if he can get something.
01:06:20Sauerbrunn kicks the long, long field goals.
01:06:23And Casey kicks a thing from about 52 yards
01:06:26in, but Sauerbrunn can knock it in from Clemson.
01:06:29Well, that's where he'd be kicking from.
01:06:31And this would qualify as a long, long field goal.
01:06:34Patriots have two players up and nine back.
01:06:38Here comes the rush.
01:06:39Brady fumbles the ball, and they blow it down.
01:06:43They say he threw the ball incomplete,
01:06:46and the half is over.
01:06:47And now we've got some shoving after the play
01:06:50with Willie McGinnis and Geno James, an offensive lineman.
01:06:56What a confusing end to a weird first half here in Charlotte.
01:07:03Hey, you got one pass rusher.
01:07:05You know, McGinnis comes on the outside over here.
01:07:08Now, how in the world can you not
01:07:10get some protection for that?
01:07:12That's a fumble.
01:07:13You know, I don't understand it.
01:07:14I don't either.
01:07:17They say, because Tom White was saying he threw the ball.
01:07:20That was his motion.
01:07:21But watch this.
01:07:23He fumbled the ball as his arm was coming forward
01:07:25in a tucked position.
01:07:27That's what he called, and that's what he saw.
01:07:29That's what he saw as he pump faked it right there.
01:07:32Oh, but you know what?
01:07:32That's a pump fake.
01:07:33Looks like he was set, though, again.
01:07:36I don't know.
01:07:37That's a fumble.
01:07:38That's right down the middle, downstairs to Beasley Reese.
01:07:39All right, I'm with Coach Belichick.
01:07:41Coach, Carolina's hanging in there.
01:07:42What are you gonna tell your players?
01:07:43Well, we had two touchdowns called back by penalties
01:07:46there in the first quarter and lost another chance
01:07:47inside the red zone.
01:07:48So we're gonna have to finish the drives
01:07:50and play a little bit better on defense
01:07:52against the running game.
01:07:53All right, thank you, Coach.
01:07:55All right, and a must game for the New England Patriots
01:07:58to win the division.
01:08:00They lead only 10 to three at halftime.
