00:00:00A misty day here in Foxboro, unconventional 9-6 game, Adam Vitateri missing on an extra
00:00:06point.
00:00:07It is halftime.
00:00:08We welcome you back, everybody.
00:00:09Ian Eagle along with Solomon Wilcox.
00:00:10The headline coming in clearly, the return of Doug Flutie.
00:00:11Headline at the end of the first half, the return of Terry Glenn.
00:00:12And Terry Glenn is really not disappointed as he comes out.
00:00:13Two-month absence, and he comes out and has six receptions in the first half, including
00:00:14touchdown pass from Tom Brady.
00:00:15But he's been everything for this offense, drawing the double coverage, and I think bringing
00:00:16up David Flutie.
00:00:17As well as Troy Brown to make plays in the passing game, something they haven't had in
00:00:18their four previous games.
00:00:19Running game has been a non-factor from both sides.
00:00:20Antoine Smith for New England, and LaDainian Tomlinson for the San Diego Chargers.
00:00:21One thing about Tomlinson, he has had strong second halves so far.
00:00:22He's got a lot of power.

00:06:26He's got a lot of power.
00:06:28That football hit him on the helmet.
00:06:31What a strange start to the third quarter after a fairly pedestrian first half.
00:06:46I think a legitimate question is, does that dog need a ticket?
00:06:50I don't have that answer.
00:06:51It's one of the 50 that Flutie gave out tickets to, maybe.
00:06:54Just maybe.
00:06:569-6.
00:06:58The Patriots leading the San Diego Chargers.
00:07:01Are they talking about re-kicking this ball?
00:07:03They might be.
00:07:05As the officials huddle up at the 15-yard line.
00:07:08What a strange bounce.
00:07:11Did it touch Tim White first or did it hit a Patriot player, Tabucky Jones, first?
00:07:16Well, we know it hit Tabucky Jones.
00:07:18Ball hit him right in the top of the head.
00:07:19I think they're trying to get the sequence of events in order.
00:07:24I have to give credit to Doug Flutie.
00:07:26He was lobbying the officials for a better spot.
00:07:29He doesn't want to start at his own 13-yard line.
00:07:36During the punt, illegal touching by the flyer.
00:07:40He went out of bounds, came back in, and was the first to touch the football.
00:07:45Five-yard penalty.
00:07:46Previous spot.
00:07:48Repeat.
00:07:50Good explanation from our referee today, Terry McCaul.
00:07:54Tabucky Jones was the flyer.
00:07:56He's lined up at the top.
00:07:58He went out of bounds voluntarily, which means he's ineligible.
00:08:01He can't touch the ball and down it up the football field.
00:08:05So that's why they're going to bring it back and punt it.
00:08:08Keep in mind, the field position for San Diego would have been the 13-yard line.
00:08:13They should improve upon that a great deal.
00:08:16Lee Johnson is the punter.
00:08:18Lonnie Paxton will snap it.
00:08:20And the very dangerous Tim Dwight is standing at his own 20-yard line.
00:08:24Packed a lot in in just a couple of minutes here in the third quarter.
00:08:27We really have because both teams have had opportunities.
00:08:30San Diego with a big kickoff return by Ronnie Jenkins,
00:08:35returning the ball all the way to the 37-yard line of the New England Patriots
00:08:38and giving them good field position.
00:08:40They squander that opportunity with the Ladini and Tomlinson fumble.
00:08:44And then the Patriots have a good opportunity, but they can only go three and out.
00:08:47Can't get the first down.
00:08:48So now they're forced to punt the ball back over to San Diego.
00:08:51The Chargers looking to get even better field position, something they've done.
00:08:54So I think they've done all throughout the ballgame.
00:08:59Antoine Smith avoiding disaster.
00:09:02When he fumbled the football, but was able to recover it.
00:09:06As a part of this drive.
00:09:08And here's the problem.
00:09:09Look at the top right there.
00:09:10That's to Bucky Jones.
00:09:11He's known as the flyer.
00:09:13And they bump him, they push him.
00:09:15He'll step out of bounds, but he does so voluntarily.
00:09:17He's not knocked out of bounds.
00:09:18At this point, he's ineligible.
00:09:20He can come in and make a tackle, but he can't down the football by touching it.
00:09:24This is still a live ball.
00:09:26But once they blow the whistle, the ball's dead.
00:09:28And to Bucky Jones, he's ineligible from downing that football.
00:09:32Ball hit him in the helmet, so from the spot where it touched him,
00:09:36it would have been the line of scrimmage for San Diego.
00:09:39But because Jones had stepped out of bounds,
00:09:42the officials questioned it.
00:09:44And we are set to re-kick, we believe.
00:09:50They're still trying to sort it out.
00:09:53Down on the far sideline.
00:09:57There are some other issues they're discussing here.
00:10:01Maybe they're looking where to spot the ball
00:10:03and trying to find the original line of scrimmage
00:10:05where the previous punt took place.
00:10:07And as you can see, it's right around the 47-yard line right now.
00:10:11The ball is placed at the 42-yard line.
00:10:14They've got it right.
00:10:15Five-yard penalty assessed to New England.
00:10:18And now we will see Lee Johnson.
00:10:23Spiraling punt.
00:10:24Angling towards the sideline and out of bounds
00:10:27as he drifted inside the 30.
00:10:30Line of scrimmage will be the 27, so a 14-yard improvement.
00:10:37Let's go to New York, Jim Nantz.
00:10:56Of course, the only difference, Jim,
00:10:57Freeman was actually in training camp this year.
00:10:59He's been putting in practice time,
00:11:01but big-time players make big-time plays
00:11:03when the team needed most,
00:11:04and that's where I think both are quite the same.
00:11:07Terry Glenn, a huge day so far for New England.
00:11:09The fog is beginning to seep in.
00:11:11Flutie with that sidearm toss.
00:11:13And Ted Johnson got his hands on it out across the middle.
00:11:16Incomplete.
00:11:17It's an excellent play by Ted Johnson.
00:11:19He's a very versatile football player.
00:11:21Can play both the middle linebacker position.
00:11:23Today, he's filling in for Teddy Bruschi
00:11:25at the outside linebacker position.
00:11:27He's reading the eyes of Doug Flutie.
00:11:29Leaves his feet and make a play.
00:11:30This ball was intended for Jeff Graham going over the middle.
00:11:33Ted Johnson's not happy with himself.
00:11:35He's not satisfied with knocking that ball down.
00:11:38He wanted the interception.
00:11:39See the clouds settling in just outside Foxboro Stadium.
00:11:43Injury update on New England.
00:11:45Richard Sumner, the rookie, a leg injury.
00:11:47His return is doubtful.
00:11:48Tomlinson waiting for a hold of the belt.
00:11:50He sees the flag on the play.
00:11:52And Roman Pfeiffer made that stop after a gain of two.
00:11:56And this one's coming back.
00:11:59He'll be holding against San Diego
00:12:01right at the point of attack.
00:12:03And Pfeiffer's done a good job since coming over
00:12:05from the Jets where he was an outside linebacker.
00:12:08Now he's playing that defensive end position.
00:12:10Offense.
00:12:11Number 70.
00:12:12Penalty's declined.
00:12:14Third down.
00:12:15That's the veteran, Vaughn Parker.
00:12:17They declined the penalty after the short run
00:12:19by LaDainian Tomlinson.
00:12:22In for Seymour at the nose tackle position
00:12:25is Brandon Mitchell.
00:12:27From a second round pick back in 97 out of Texas A&M.
00:12:31This is a third and eight.
00:12:33Crowd again getting vocal.
00:12:37Here comes the rush.
00:12:38Floating.
00:12:39Unloads it.
00:12:40Incomplete.
00:12:41Flags on the play.
00:12:45Lawyer Malloy and Tabucky Jones
00:12:47on that safety blitz.
00:12:49False start.
00:12:50Offense.
00:12:51Number 85.
00:12:53Five yard penalty.
00:12:54Third down.
00:12:56And they come right up the middle,
00:12:57right up the face.
00:12:58You see them.
00:12:59They'll come right here.
00:13:01And then you see both of them.
00:13:02Tabucky Jones as well as Lawyer Malloy.
00:13:04He has to throw this ball much sooner
00:13:06than he would like to.
00:13:08Flutie understanding the pressure's coming.
00:13:10Can't wait for the receiver to get open.
00:13:12He's forced to get rid of the football,
00:13:13but the offensive linemen have to maintain their poise
00:13:16and stay still right up front until the ball is snapped.
00:13:19Penalty before the snap.
00:13:21So now San Diego will face a third and 13.
00:13:27Here's Flutie.
00:13:28Pump fake.
00:13:29Throwing.
00:13:30Sideline.
00:13:31Finish it.
00:13:32Curtis Conway.
00:13:33And he's dragged down from behind by Terrell Buckley.
00:13:37Oh, the time that Flutie had to work with,
00:13:40and he put it right where it had to be.
00:13:42And sometimes you can try to contain a quarterback
00:13:44too much to the point where you're not getting the push up front,
00:13:47giving Doug Flutie more than enough time to complete this pass.
00:13:51Only four guys are rushing right now.
00:13:53Flutie, he's looking at Conway all the way.
00:13:55Little pump fake to the right.
00:13:57Buys a little time,
00:13:58and Terrell Buckley must have bought the fake
00:14:00because he's nowhere near Conway.
00:14:02Conway has him beat by maybe five yards or so.
00:14:05Conway stays with the play.
00:14:07Good pump fake by Doug Flutie.
00:14:0956-yard completion down to the New England 20.
00:14:12First and 10.
00:14:13Flutie again.
00:14:14Throwing.
00:14:15Finds the opening.
00:14:16And finds Conway on back-to-back plays inside the two.
00:14:20Ty Law had the coverage,
00:14:22and it'll be first and goal
00:14:24as San Diego is looking to put points on the board.
00:14:28Back to what they did so very well in the first half.
00:14:30This is just a quick slant route,
00:14:32and this ball is going to be there.
00:14:34The receiver's going to be open
00:14:35because he gets under the quarterback, Ty Law,
00:14:38as soon as he passes the linebacker.
00:14:40Flutie does a good job of timing up the route
00:14:42and getting the ball out very quickly and accurately.
00:14:45A three-tight end set on a first and goal.
00:14:50Hand up.
00:14:51Tomlinson tried to turn it upfield.
00:14:53Second effort.
00:14:54Did he get there?
00:14:55Yes.
00:14:56Touchdown, San Diego.
00:14:58We talked about the power of Damian Tomlinson
00:15:02and his ability to run inside.
00:15:04He's hit well before he gets to the goal line,
00:15:06but uses nothing but second effort to get to the ball,
00:15:10and he hits head-on with Ted Johnson,
00:15:12but he's able to maintain his position.
00:15:14Now, that's his seventh rushing touchdown this season.
00:15:18Last year, the team had seven touchdowns,
00:15:21so he equals the entire team total last year.
00:15:28But Damian Tomlinson, leading the NFL in that category,
00:15:33seven rushing touchdowns.
00:15:35The team now has eight overall.
00:15:38And San Diego has taken the lead.
00:15:41Wade Ritchie, extra point.
00:15:43He curved that one through.
00:15:46Chargers, 13.
00:15:48Patriots, nine.
00:15:49A five-play, 73-yard drive.
00:15:52Flutie to Conway, the key one, on back-to-back pass plays.
00:15:5713-9.
00:15:58They've taken the lead by four points.
00:16:02Now, let's see if New England can turn things around.
00:16:06That's right.
00:16:09But Damian Tomlinson, one-yard touchdown run,
00:16:12seventh of the season for Tomlinson.
00:16:14And the San Diego Chargers lead at 13-9.
00:16:17Kevin Faulk on the return.
00:16:19Here's Faulk running through a crowd,
00:16:21and then walked down at the 28-yard line by Jason Perry.
00:16:25That's an 18-yard return.
00:16:27Now, New England now finds himself behind.
00:16:31Chance to change that when we return.
00:16:44Third quarter's been a sore point for this New England team
00:16:46so far in the young season.
00:16:48You see the numbers, and they speak for themselves.
00:16:51I think the ones that stand out, look at that,
00:16:531.5 yards per rush, and then their inability to stop the run
00:16:57and the pass in the third quarter.
00:16:59Defense total collapse.
00:17:00And again for Antoine Smith, tried the shake-and-bake move
00:17:03and then forced to the sideline.
00:17:05Flags come down, two of them, in fact.
00:17:07Ryan McNeil in on the coverage to make that tackle.
00:17:10A one-yard gain.
00:17:11We talk about their inability to run the ball
00:17:14in the third quarter for the New England Patriots.
00:17:16They come out trying to get Antoine Smith going
00:17:19so far here in the third quarter.
00:17:22Face mask penalty.
00:17:23Face mask.
00:17:24Defense.
00:17:25Number 47.
00:17:26Five-yard penalty.
00:17:28First down.
00:17:29It's Ryan McNeil.
00:17:30Now, let's talk a little bit about the identity of this San Diego defense,
00:17:34and not necessarily on this play with the face mask,
00:17:38but overall what Joe Pascal, their defensive coordinator,
00:17:41has brought to this team.
00:17:42Well, Joe Pascal, he's not even with the team.
00:17:44He's resting in the hospital in San Diego,
00:17:47but he has put his stamp and his personality on this defense,
00:17:50according to Junior Seau.
00:17:51It's an aggressive attacking style,
00:17:53and we'll talk a little bit more about it as the game progresses.
00:17:56And a handoff for Smith, and he picks it up in the middle.
00:17:59Antoine Smith picks up the first down.
00:18:02Orlando Ruff in on the stop after the gain of four.
00:18:06Pascal's in the hospital because of back surgery,
00:18:09and he was a part of the game plan early in the week,
00:18:12trying to install some things,
00:18:14but it's been a touchy situation with Jim Vicarella
00:18:16taking over the linebacker's coach.
00:18:18That's right.
00:18:19He's in the hospital studying for him,
00:18:20breaking down plays and setting the game plan,
00:18:23and then Jim is making the calls on game day.
00:18:26Sideline toss.
00:18:27Troy Brown tried to break through a tackle
00:18:30and did bring McNeil with him for a couple extra yards.
00:18:34And Brown, with that little extra effort,
00:18:36turns it into a nine-yard pass play.
00:18:38And I asked Junior Seau what are the differences
00:18:40in terms of play calling on game day
00:18:43in terms of how Joe Pascal would call a game
00:18:45and what you get with Jim Vicarella.
00:18:47He says, you know, Joe does a good job.
00:18:49Joe is very aggressive. He's very attacking.
00:18:52We're able to make more big plays defensively.
00:18:54He says, Jim, he's a little bit more conservative
00:18:56and likes to play straight up.
00:18:58It's a tough situation for Vicarella, of course,
00:19:00because Pascal has been so successful here,
00:19:03and you just don't want to mess things up.
00:19:05That's right, and well loved by the defensive players
00:19:07on this football team.
00:19:08Meanwhile, New England is moving the football.
00:19:10Patrick Pass setting up as a receiver
00:19:13and bringing that ball in for a gain of nine.
00:19:16They are into San Diego territory
00:19:18down at the 40-yard line.
00:19:20We saw Junior Seau making plays in the box,
00:19:23coming in, blitzing,
00:19:24but now he's going to go to the flat,
00:19:26and he's just trying to get under this pass route,
00:19:28just one step away from getting there.
00:19:31Has to do a better job of recognition,
00:19:32but Junior Seau, he studies films, I think,
00:19:35as well as any player in the National Football League
00:19:37in terms of understanding what the offensive team
00:19:39wants to do against them.
00:19:40First and ten from the 40.
00:19:42Antoine Smith stumbles forward for a gain of two.
00:19:45Running game has not been there.
00:19:46They haven't established that throughout the day
00:19:49on the ground.
00:19:50Ray Lee Johnson making the stop
00:19:51as the clock continues to move.
00:19:537.34 and counting, left in the third.
00:19:55Well, the Patriots have been very dominant
00:19:57on the pass side,
00:19:59throwing the ball 30 times so far in the game,
00:20:01only 12 attempts to run the football,
00:20:03and that's because they haven't been too productive,
00:20:05only rushing for 42 yards so far in the ballgame.
00:20:08Three-receiver look.
00:20:09Kevin Falk has set up as a receiver,
00:20:12making a five-receiver look now
00:20:14as they spread the field entirely.
00:20:16On second and eight, Brady's short drop,
00:20:18and a quick throw underneath.
00:20:20David Patton took a smack,
00:20:22but he didn't have it up for the first down,
00:20:25a gain of nine out across the 30-yard line.
00:20:27And that smack was delivered by Rodney Harrison,
00:20:30who came in.
00:20:31That's what you have to do.
00:20:32If they're gonna run slant plays in front of you all day,
00:20:34you have to come up, make the tackle,
00:20:36but you want to make them pay,
00:20:37and that's what Rodney Harrison does so well
00:20:39in National Football League,
00:20:40one of the harder hitting safeties in the league.
00:20:44And that combination, Harrison and Seau,
00:20:46they have been the crux of this San Diego defense
00:20:49as they've shuffled some other players as part of the unit.
00:20:53First and ten now,
00:20:54line of scrimmage just shy of a 29.
00:20:56Play action for Brady.
00:20:58Finds Smith, middle of the field.
00:21:00Smith trying to remain on his feet.
00:21:02And then pushed out after the gain of three.
00:21:04Again, it's Rodney Harrison.
00:21:06It's Rodney Harrison.
00:21:07Junior Seau does the dirty work.
00:21:09He gets hold of the legs of Antoine Smith,
00:21:12but Rodney Harrison comes in like a missile and cleans up.
00:21:15But you can see how productive these players have been
00:21:17over the course of their careers.
00:21:19Both are Pro Bowl players,
00:21:20and they're used to making big plays,
00:21:22whether it's tackles, whether it's sacks or interceptions.
00:21:25They are the heart and soul of this defense.
00:21:27Seau told us he took Harrison under his wing
00:21:29during his rookie year in 1994.
00:21:31He saw something in this fifth round draft pick.
00:21:34Mark Edwards, the ball carrier, and it's a gain of three.
00:21:37Again, it's Harrison involved in the stop,
00:21:39combining with Rogers Beckett, the free safety.
00:21:43It'll be third and three.
00:21:44Excuse me, more on Seau and Harrison.
00:21:46They actually go in and study film together.
00:21:49They're constantly on the same page with one another.
00:21:52So, you know, one is working in the box
00:21:54around the line of scrimmage.
00:21:55The other is patrolling that secondary.
00:21:57But they study so well together,
00:21:59they both see the same things at the same time,
00:22:01and they can react in the same manner.
00:22:03Tanu Vassa has come onto the field for San Diego.
00:22:06Recently signed from Denver.
00:22:08Flags down.
00:22:09Hand off.
00:22:10Trying to take it up the gut.
00:22:11Antoine Smith, and it's enough for a first down.
00:22:15We'll see what the penalty marker is
00:22:17as Smith crossed the 20-yard line,
00:22:19and offsides against San Diego is the initial...
00:22:24Rodney Harrison got down into the line,
00:22:26crossed the line before the ball was snapped.
00:22:30Terry McCauley.
00:22:31Offside.
00:22:32Defense.
00:22:33The 35-yard penalty.
00:22:35First down.
00:22:37Talked about Rodney Harrison and Junior Seau
00:22:39being on the same page.
00:22:40We've seen Junior Seau do this already
00:22:42and jump across the line before the ball was snapped.
00:22:45Now we see Rodney Harrison doing it,
00:22:47so they both take their cue from the same page,
00:22:50and they tend to guess right more times than not.
00:22:53But that time, Rodney Harrison jumped the gun
00:22:55just a little bit quick.
00:22:57New England Patriots have won nine straight
00:23:00over the San Diego Chargers,
00:23:01dating back to their last loss to the Chargers back in 1970.
00:23:05They trail 13-9.
00:23:07Brady.
00:23:08He's got it!
00:23:09He's got Edwards!
00:23:10Inside the five!
00:23:17A 15-yard pass play,
00:23:19as the Pats inch closer.
00:23:23This is an excellent pass protection for Tom Brady.
00:23:25That time, Leite does a good job of keeping Ray Lee Johnson out,
00:23:28but we can tell you Mark Edwards is a really good pass-catching fullback.
00:23:32He can get out of the backfield.
00:23:34He's in coverage against Gerald Dixon,
00:23:36trying to keep Edwards from catching the ball,
00:23:38but Edwards gets open.
00:23:40Brady gets the ball to him.
00:23:41And Dixon got lost.
00:23:43First and goal from the two.
00:23:45Cox again has checked in.
00:23:47Hand off.
00:23:48Edwards trying to rumble his way through.
00:23:50A flag down.
00:23:53And now Edwards pushed back
00:23:54as a crowd of San Diego defenders came in to make the stop.
00:23:58A lot of confusion on the San Diego Chargers' side of the ball.
00:24:02Good movement up front before the snap of the ball,
00:24:04and they're going to draw another penalty.
00:24:06Looking at the Patriots' offense,
00:24:07a number of chances to get the ball into the end zone.
00:24:12Defense.
00:24:1312 men on the field.
00:24:14Half the distance to the post.
00:24:17First down.
00:24:18We saw Cox line up as a fullback earlier.
00:24:21That play he lined up as the tight end.
00:24:24You know,
00:24:25offenses want to create some doubt in the mind of the defense,
00:24:27but right now,
00:24:28the Chargers are not playing sound defense.
00:24:3112 men on the field,
00:24:32just never any excuse to have 12 men on the football field.
00:24:36Cox in at fullback.
00:24:38Jumbo formation.
00:24:39Hand off.
00:24:41Driven back.
00:24:42Second effort.
00:24:44Touchdown.
00:24:46Antoine Smith.
00:24:50He got hit by Seau and kept going in the right direction.
00:24:53And you ask me,
00:24:54is he a top back in the National Football League?
00:24:56And that's because at moments,
00:24:58he can make some tremendous plays.
00:25:00We know Junior Seau.
00:25:01He's going to bring a lick,
00:25:02and he's a fine tackler in his own right.
00:25:05But Antoine Smith does a good job of maintaining balance here,
00:25:08staying on his feet.
00:25:09And that's just a wonderful play because he was hit by two
00:25:12defensive players right in the hole,
00:25:14able to maintain balance and give a second effort to get the
00:25:17ball in.
00:25:18You might've caught the frustration of Junior Seau
00:25:20following the play.
00:25:21He thought he had made the stop.
00:25:24Puts this one through,
00:25:26and New England has gone back in front.
00:25:28A 10-play, 71-yard drive.
00:25:31Capped off by Antoine Smith's second effort.
00:25:3416-14, Pats.
00:25:52Fans getting charged up here at Foxboro
00:25:54with just over four minutes to play in the third.
00:25:56After the touchdown run from Smith,
00:25:58kick from Vinotin,
00:26:00Ronnie Jenkins flat down,
00:26:03and Jenkins is brought down as he crosses the 35-yard line.
00:26:07Penalty markers once again.
00:26:10A 32-yard return.
00:26:14Checking out Antoine Smith and
00:26:17taking a look at the right wrist.
00:26:23During their turn, holding,
00:26:25receiving team, number 53,
00:26:2710-yard penalty, first down.
00:26:30Deanna Humphrey on the hole.
00:26:32How did Antoine Smith get to the end zone?
00:26:34Here's what you need to look at.
00:26:35One, that's Junior Seau.
00:26:37There's two, John Holosek.
00:26:38Both players come in to blow up the run play,
00:26:40but neither wrap up.
00:26:42Antoine Smith just slides right underneath Holosek
00:26:45and able to get the ball into the end zone.
00:26:47You come with the fury of a linebacker,
00:26:49but you have to wrap up and tackle.
00:26:51That time, Antoine Smith did a good job
00:26:53of maintaining his balance there.
00:26:55Off-play action.
00:26:56Lots of misdirection on this play.
00:26:58A dump off with Tomlinson.
00:26:59Great cut by Tomlinson.
00:27:01And he gets out across the 25-yard line
00:27:04and picks up seven on the pass play.
00:27:06Roman Pfeiffer with the tackle.
00:27:08And I see why you get excited
00:27:10every time he touches the ball,
00:27:11because it was an excellent cut.
00:27:13They had Tomlinson hemmed in on that play,
00:27:15but he's able to make players miss.
00:27:17And I'll tell you what,
00:27:18he'd make one more player miss,
00:27:20and he's going to take that to distance.
00:27:21Yeah, Tomlinson and talking to him
00:27:23about his pass-catching ability,
00:27:24because look at what he knew about it.
00:27:27Back at TCU, he said during the offseason,
00:27:29he would line up as a receiver
00:27:32and run wide receiver routes against cornerbacks
00:27:35just to work on his hands.
00:27:37He said it was a hidden talent.
00:27:38San Diego's pretty happy that he worked on it.
00:27:41Fluidly throwing on a timing pattern,
00:27:44and it was not anywhere close to Curtis Conway,
00:27:47to Bucky Jones had coverage.
00:27:49We're going to New York right now.
00:27:51An NFL Today update.
00:27:52Jim Nantz.
00:27:57And Jim would have thought early in the season,
00:27:59since it had a Cleveland matchup,
00:28:01actually would have had a bearing
00:28:03in the standings in the Central.
00:28:05Battle of Ohio, baby.
00:28:06It was once a great rivalry,
00:28:08and it's nice to see it return.
00:28:10On a third and three from the 27th,
00:28:13Dwight the Motion Man,
00:28:14fluidly, flushed out,
00:28:16fluidly on the move,
00:28:17and makes his way to the plate.
00:28:19He's going to get it.
00:28:20He's going to get it.
00:28:21He's going to get it.
00:28:22He's going to get it.
00:28:23He's going to get it.
00:28:24Flushed out.
00:28:25Fluidly on the move,
00:28:26and makes the connection to his tight end,
00:28:27Freddie Jones.
00:28:29It's been a bit surprising that Jones' numbers
00:28:31haven't been gaudy this year.
00:28:33After breaking out with a huge season last year,
00:28:35and the fact that fluidly would use Remersmuir
00:28:37and Buffalo,
00:28:38but his numbers have been fairly modest.
00:28:40Doug has done a good job, I think,
00:28:41of spreading the ball around
00:28:42to a number of different receivers.
00:28:44Six different players have caught passes,
00:28:46and now Freddie Jones gets into the mix.
00:28:48But he's a more than capable tight end
00:28:50because he has excellent speed.
00:28:51You see he led the team last year
00:28:53But he can get deep at four tight end,
00:28:55but he can also catch the ball underneath,
00:28:58shooting off defenders.
00:29:00First down for San Diego,
00:29:01a first and 10 at the 35.
00:29:03Here come the Patriots on a rush.
00:29:05Floated, under, he floated.
00:29:07Can't get rid of it.
00:29:09William Malloy.
00:29:13He chased him down from behind for the sack.
00:29:17Bill Belichick, you know,
00:29:19he likes to change things up.
00:29:22In the first half, we saw Loyer Malloy.
00:29:25You see him right here.
00:29:26He'll come creeping in,
00:29:27but we saw him playing much further back.
00:29:29Now he's playing in the box.
00:29:31He's blitzing, coming in untouched,
00:29:33and he has the speed to run down Doug Flutie,
00:29:35something the defensive linemen have not been able to do.
00:29:38This time, Loyer Malloy comes in with excellent feel
00:29:42for the pass rush and tracks down Doug Flutie.
00:29:45Eight tackles for Malloy, his first sack of the season,
00:29:48and a loss of 12 on the play.
00:29:50A second and 22.
00:29:52Flutie, quick throw and complete.
00:29:55Doug Flutie able to find Reggie Jones,
00:29:58a little-used wide receiver in his fourth year at LSU.
00:30:02He picks up a quick 11 yards to make back
00:30:04some of the yardage off the loss on the sack.
00:30:07Flutie continues to spread around
00:30:08to a number of different receivers.
00:30:10It's pretty difficult for the Patriots
00:30:12to key in on one wide receiver
00:30:14because they're all pretty adept
00:30:15at running these slant routes,
00:30:17and it's tied up very well.
00:30:21On a third and 11.
00:30:25Down to a minute 40 left in the third.
00:30:28Shotgun for Flutie.
00:30:30Patriots with a three-point lead.
00:30:32Flutie thrown to the sideline,
00:30:34in traffic, and a flag down.
00:30:37Jeff Graham in a matchup with Otis Smith,
00:30:39and there was contact on the far sideline.
00:30:42It was really good coverage by Otis Smith initially,
00:30:44but he doesn't find the football.
00:30:46He's still jousting with Jeff Graham with his hands,
00:30:49and that's why they throw the flag
00:30:50and catching for pass interference
00:30:52because he's still jousting with the receiver
00:30:54while the ball's in the air.
00:30:56Pass interference, defense, number 45,
00:31:00automatic first down.
00:31:02Only the fourth New England penalty today.
00:31:06You can see the jam by Otis Smith.
00:31:08His back is to the quarterback.
00:31:09He doesn't know the ball's in the air.
00:31:11He's still jostling for position,
00:31:13but you can't touch the receiver
00:31:14after he clears five yards in the line of scrimmage,
00:31:17particularly when the ball's in the air.
00:31:19Now a first and ten of the 49-yard line.
00:31:21This drive remains alive.
00:31:23Tomlinson looking for the hole,
00:31:26and he gains two yards.
00:31:28Into New England territory at the 49-yard line.
00:31:31Johnson and Law combining to make that stop,
00:31:34and they have held Ladini and Tomlinson in check.
00:31:37But you have to give, I think, the Chargers offense credit.
00:31:40They've done a good job on this drive
00:31:42of maintaining some poise.
00:31:43They've had some penalties.
00:31:44They had the sack on the quarterback,
00:31:46but Tomlinson, he has a way of wearing down people
00:31:49in the second half,
00:31:50so they've maintained some patience in the offense.
00:31:52They continue to try to get him the ball.
00:31:54Even after he fumbled early here in the third quarter,
00:31:56they continue to go right back to him.
00:31:5831 yards first half,
00:32:00seven yards so far today in the second half.
00:32:02He does have a touchdown.
00:32:04Floated, thrown, broken up.
00:32:07Jeff Graham was the target.
00:32:09It was knocked up in the air,
00:32:11and Otis Smith didn't have the coverage this time around.
00:32:14Not only was Otis Smith,
00:32:15but you'll see Ty Law come into the screen,
00:32:18and he's breaking to try to get that slant route.
00:32:20He's got to get his head around and find the football,
00:32:22but I think San Diego may be going to the well
00:32:25one too many times on these slant routes.
00:32:27It's going to be interesting to see how the Patriots adjust
00:32:30and see if they can maybe pick off one of these passes
00:32:32because San Diego continues to go back to the slant route.
00:32:35They've been completing them.
00:32:37At that time, Ty Law was in position to make a play.
00:32:39Passing situation.
00:32:40Willie McGinnis just checked in.
00:32:44Floated.
00:32:45Steps up in the pocket.
00:32:47Slant route.
00:32:49And Jeff Graham could not bring it in.
00:32:52He got his right hand on it, and Otis Smith was there.
00:32:58Graham comes up a little bit gimpy.
00:33:01Jeff does a good job of really, I think,
00:33:03giving some room over the top
00:33:05and keeping Otis Smith on his hip.
00:33:07That time, I think he may have jumped just a little too early.
00:33:10Doug could have gotten the ball down maybe a little bit better.
00:33:12Jeff Graham made an excellent play on the ball,
00:33:14trying to pull it down with one hand.
00:33:16He thought he had that one to Graham on the touch pass.
00:33:21Darren Bennett will punt it.
00:33:23Standing at his own 37.
00:33:25Troy Brown is waiting.
00:33:28Brown, fair catch signal.
00:33:32And he brings it into the 10-yard line.
00:33:34That's where New England will have the football
00:33:36after the 39-yard punt.
00:33:37Patriots leading at 16-13, late thirds.
00:33:43Now, the New England game is about to begin.
00:33:47The three-point difference means that
00:33:49if San Diego can attack rhythmically...
00:33:56The comfort zone of Tom Brady is increasing.
00:33:59And this is third start in the NFL.
00:34:01Last week held the 86-yard passing in Miami.
00:34:04It's one of the big numbers here today.
00:34:08And a handoff.
00:34:09Kevin Falk is in there as Falk takes it up the gut
00:34:11for a gain of three.
00:34:12And really, big picture for New England.
00:34:14We talked about it earlier, the third-quarter walls.
00:34:17This has not been the case here today.
00:34:19Well, they've come out and answered.
00:34:20San Diego took the ball down, scored a touchdown,
00:34:22and then the Patriots responded
00:34:24by going on a 71-yard drive themselves.
00:34:27We talked about Tom Brady was 5-for-5 on that drive,
00:34:29and they haven't had much in the way of the running game,
00:34:32so he's had to make the big plays.
00:34:34They do get a play from Antoine Smith
00:34:36down on the goal line,
00:34:37the second effort to get the touchdown.
00:34:40That's the end of the third quarter with the score,
00:34:42New England 16, San Diego 13.
00:34:45We'll come back to Foxboro with fourth-quarter action
00:34:48after these messages and a word from your local station.
00:34:51You're watching the NFL on CBS.

00:35:58Start of the fourth quarter here in Foxboro.
00:36:00Ian Eagle, Solomon Wilcox, our entire CBS crew,
00:36:03has taped up the right wrist
00:36:05of Antoine Smith, but
00:36:07he is not on the field as
00:36:09we get underway in the fourth.
00:36:11They're leading at 16-13.
00:36:13Tom Brady is sacked back at the 10-yard line
00:36:15by Ray Lee Johnson.
00:36:17A good push from this San Diego
00:36:19defensive line
00:36:21to get in the face of Brady.
00:36:23Well, Smith came up with a touchdown.
00:36:25This was just moments ago.
00:36:27Look at that right wrist of his.
00:36:29You can see the knot on that wrist.
00:36:31He licked down on the goal line when he scored the touchdown.
00:36:33They come over, they're going to wrap it up,
00:36:35but he took a hit from Junior Seau
00:36:37on the touchdown run, but
00:36:39let's see if they can get him back into the football game.
00:36:43Kevin Falk played on that
00:36:45first down of this series, and now it's
00:36:47Patrick Pass in the backfield on a third
00:36:49and 11, just underway here
00:36:51in the fourth.
00:36:53England looking for its second win of the season.
00:36:55Rush coming, Brady to the sideline
00:36:57and out of bounds.
00:36:59Marcellus Wiley was
00:37:01applying some of that pressure on Brady, and
00:37:03New England is forced to punt.
00:37:05It was both Wiley and
00:37:07Ray Lee Johnson forcing Brady to step up
00:37:09in the pocket, forcing him to throw the ball
00:37:11maybe a little sooner than he wanted, but certainly
00:37:13Terry Glynn had the edge on the
00:37:15cornerback. Ball thrown a little bit in
00:37:17after out of bounds, but
00:37:19punting's not a bad thing. You want to avoid
00:37:21the bad plays, the turnovers and
00:37:23interceptions down at
00:37:25this part of the field and at this part of the ballgame.
00:37:27Oh, it should be good field position for the
00:37:29San Diego team. We know what Dwight is
00:37:31capable of. Johnson,
00:37:33high punt. Dwight
00:37:35backpedals to the 40, cuts it upfield.
00:37:37Dwight has a win!
00:37:39Jim Dwight crossing the
00:37:4135, and he's finally brought down
00:37:43at the 32-yard line by
00:37:45Roman Pfeiffer.
00:37:47Tim Dwight is a weapon, and you have to
00:37:49think that he has eyes in the back of his head
00:37:51because he's surrounded by New
00:37:53England Patriots, and he's able to avoid
00:37:55every last one of them, and he makes
00:37:57very good decisions when he's returning
00:37:59punts, and just an excellent play
00:38:01by Tim Dwight. 26-yard return
00:38:03after the 49-yard punt.
00:38:05San Diego down by three,
00:38:07but an excellent field position to work with.
00:38:21It's been a good one here in
00:38:23Monroe today. 16-13, New
00:38:25England leading San Diego. Fourth quarter
00:38:27though now, and fourth quarter
00:38:29in the past has meant Doug
00:38:31Flutietime.
00:38:33His team down by three.
00:38:35A first and ten from the
00:38:37New England 34.
00:38:39Off the middle, Tomlinson.
00:38:41And a flag down.
00:38:43A flag down on a play.
00:38:45Just about everybody involved defensively to make that
00:38:47play on Tomlinson in the box. A gain
00:38:49of three.
00:38:53Another penalty marker
00:38:55though. San Diego clapping
00:38:57away here.
00:39:03Here's Terry McCauley.
00:39:05Illegal hands to the face.
00:39:07Defense. Number 24.
00:39:09Five-yard penalty. Automatic
00:39:11first down. That's Ty Law,
00:39:13the veteran.
00:39:15AFC Central race is one of the league's
00:39:17best. Which team will win the division?

00:39:25I'm gonna go out on the limb
00:39:27and say Baltimore.
00:39:29Come on. Give me something.
00:39:31Go with Cincinnati. Let's see
00:39:33it. Baltimore is really coming back
00:39:35since that loss to the New England.
00:39:37They sure are. First and ten
00:39:39for San Diego.
00:39:41On the handoff, Tomlinson.
00:39:43Bit of a pitter-patter
00:39:45as he ran into the line. Ted Johnson
00:39:47making the stop. It's a gain of
00:39:49two on the ground.
00:39:51Let's go to New York right now.
00:39:53Jim Nantz is standing by with an NFL Today
00:39:55update. Jim.
00:40:11I'll go with Cincinnati.
00:40:13I think Cincinnati is the pick in that division.
00:40:15They had that one on cue, didn't they?
00:40:17Here's Flutie.
00:40:19Throw it.
00:40:21And it took a bounce.
00:40:23It was in the direction of Tim Dwight.
00:40:25He was upset. Dwight slipped down
00:40:27and stood up. Was hoping for
00:40:29a penalty flag.
00:40:31Both Doug and Tim Dwight
00:40:33are a little bit frustrated because they know
00:40:35they had it. No one touches Flutie
00:40:37and Flutie gets the ball there. Dwight says,
00:40:39Hey, I would have haunted in had I kept my
00:40:41foot in. But we've seen a number of players slip
00:40:43and fall down today.
00:40:45A little wet, had a little drizzle
00:40:47early this morning.
00:40:49A little water on the field, but not a lot.
00:40:51Let me amend the statement. He wasn't hoping for a penalty flag.
00:40:53He was hoping for some traction.
00:40:57If he stayed on his feet, he got a big gainer.
00:40:59Dime package.
00:41:01New England is showing Flutie and Flutie
00:41:03takes a timeout.
00:41:05San Diego uses its first timeout
00:41:07of the second half and even 13 minutes
00:41:09to play. New England
00:41:11leading by three.
00:41:15Flutie called the timeout before.
00:41:17They've had a chance to talk about it.
00:41:19Out of the shotgun.
00:41:21Flutie, buying some extra time.
00:41:23Tries to get rid of it.
00:41:29Doug Flutie was down.
00:41:31Brian Cox was twirling him down.
00:41:33And Flutie was down.
00:41:35And the game is over.
00:41:37The game is over.
00:41:39The game is over.
00:41:41The game is over.
00:41:43Flutie was twirling him down.
00:41:45And Flutie released the football late.
00:41:47And they're going to get him for intentional grounding.
00:41:49He was well within the pocket.
00:41:51He was actually in the grass,
00:41:53but no receiver was to that side of the field.
00:41:55That'll go down as a sack.
00:41:57Wait a second.
00:41:59Flag down.
00:42:01And it's going to work against New England.
00:42:03We need an explanation on this.
00:42:05Defense.
00:42:07Number 45.
00:42:09Five yard penalty.
00:42:11what a turn of events here the holding on Otis Smith obviously that takes place
00:42:19before Flutie gets rid of the football this time he's working against Jeff
00:42:24Graham and I don't know I don't know if that was enough to pull down anyone
00:42:31Tomlinson turns it up field and Huff's skipping a jump forward
00:42:39it's a critical penalty no doubt I didn't see a blatant hold by Otis Smith
00:42:44on Jeff Graham you need to take him maybe another look at it certainly I
00:42:48don't think this warrants throwing the flag there's a little grab inside can't
00:42:53see the left hand there there was a little grab there but I don't know if
00:42:56it was enough to disrupt Jeff Graham he was well within the five-yard bump rule
00:43:01certainly they had the play there on the quarterback trying to sack Bill Flutie
00:43:05second look who may have gotten some Jersey there and that's what the
00:43:10official said Tomlinson trying to run a good shot and driven back by Cox and company a
00:43:15gain of one it'll be third and about four Cox combining with Riddick Parker
00:43:22to make that stop Brian Cox has been spying Doug Flutie the entire game but
00:43:26now you see him working against Graham in the running game he comes up to fill
00:43:30the hole and secures the tackle on Ladini and Tomlinson Brian Cox knows this
00:43:35defense well that's why Bill Belichick brings him over from the New York Jets
00:43:39and hoping to solidify this defense and add some leadership and experience but
00:43:44with the injuries to the linebackers Tatsy Moyer, Ted Johnson, and Teddy Grewski
00:43:48Brian Cox is the mainstay with this defense now.
00:43:52Flutie on a give, Jarrell Fletcher accelerating he's got a first down to
00:43:57Jarrell Fletcher had to get to the nine-yard line and Fletcher extended the
00:44:02arms when he passed it. Good call by North Turner normally Jarrell Fletcher
00:44:09works in the passing game but now you have to mix up the defense Romeo
00:44:13Cornell trying to get his defense going and says hey guys we have to sure this
00:44:17up and not give up a touchdown here force a field goal good play calling
00:44:22both you can see the strategy working North Turner offensive coordinator from
00:44:26San Diego, Romeo Cornell, defensive coordinator for the Patriots.
00:44:30First and goal from the six. Flutie on a handoff, Tomlinson forced forward for a gain of three
00:44:39Roman Pfeiffer with a tackle. Pfeiffer and Bobby Hamilton do a good job of
00:44:44closing the hole I thought Tomlinson was going to walk into the end zone for a
00:44:48minute and Hamilton comes in from the inside you can see they're going to just
00:44:52constrict that hole right in there look at that good play by Roman Pfeiffer
00:44:56getting off the block and shutting it down. Second and goal now the ball
00:45:01spotted just inside the four. San Diego looking to regain the lead on a double
00:45:08tight end set. Hyden in motion. Play action. Flutie throws it to the end zone. Caught by Hyden. Touchdown Chargers.
00:45:19Molloy is not happy. Felt like he was held on the play by the tight end.
00:45:24Freddie Jones we can get a look at it he was certainly coming in for the he was
00:45:29blitzing off the left side. Molloy is not happy. First touchdown of the
00:45:34season for Hyden. Watch right here you'll see that's Freddie Jones look he
00:45:38just tackles him to the ground allows time for Doug Flutie to make the
00:45:42completion. San Diego goes out in front.
00:45:57Second extra point today that was not converted. One from New England, one from San Diego. How big is
00:46:03that? It's still a three-point game. Extra point would have given San Diego the
00:46:08four-point lead. Instead 19-16 Chargers.
00:46:23Coming from behind has been the part of Doug Flutie's MO for a very long time.
00:46:29And San Diego has now come from behind to take the lead 19 to 16 but the extra
00:46:35point was not converted. Kevin Fox runs into a brick wall at the 24-yard line.
00:46:43And the person of Zeke Moreno a 21-yard return. Now we spoke with Tom
00:46:50Brady asked him where were you when Doug Flutie threw the Hail Mary for Boston
00:46:56College? He said well I was seven. He didn't even remember when we when we
00:47:00brought it up at that time he was a little league catcher in San Mateo. He
00:47:05said I was just trying to play baseball at the time. I've seen it on classic
00:47:10sports. He sure did. But that's about all he knew about it. Now he finds himself in
00:47:14a position to lead his team back against the master of comeback Doug Flutie.
00:47:17And that's what the Patriots need. Brady on the quick talk to Troy Brown.
00:47:21But the Brown was ace in the field.
00:47:23Brown was trying to go to the other side and San Diego would have none of it.
00:47:28Rodney Harrison chased him down.
00:47:30And it was held for no gain. Rogers Beckett also involved just about
00:47:34everybody in San Diego was able to sniff it out once Brown made his move.
00:47:37And Junior Seau said that he you know what he said whenever the play goes away
00:47:41from me I can trust that Rodney Harrison will be over on the other side to make a
00:47:45play. See Seau come up right there. He missed the tackle. Seau still gets back
00:47:49up on his feet but Rodney Harrison stays with it and is able to trip up Troy
00:47:53Brown on the play. Had he got outside it looked like he was going to run a long
00:47:56way. Second and ten. Again that five receiver look from New England on the
00:48:00offensive side. He doesn't know that Rush is coming. Unloads it deep and he had Patton open.
00:48:06Patton had two steps on Alex Molden at least. And the pass had a little too much on it.
00:48:15Patton was open. He was going outside but the ball's thrown back over the inside
00:48:20shoulder by Brady. Brady has to at times he's been a little inaccurate. For the
00:48:24most part he's thrown the ball well today but that time he could have led
00:48:27Patton outside where he had the edge on Alex Molden. Brady 20 of 34. 234 yards.
00:48:34One touchdown. On that pass to Terry Glenn. Third and ten now. The clock has stopped with
00:48:409.03 to go on the fourth. Brown in motion towards the slot. Brady steps up unloads it.
00:48:48Sideline throw. Incomplete. Glenn the intended receiver. And New England is forced to putt.
00:48:55Glenn was matched up with Molden. Yeah that time I think he was trusting that you know
00:49:00Glenn could Terry Glenn could run down that pass. He put some air under it. You know Glenn he hasn't
00:49:06caught a ball here in the second half. He caught six balls in the first half. None here in the
00:49:09second and maybe the wear and tear of the ballgame is beginning to wane on him a little bit after a
00:49:14two-mark layoff. Normally he's able to close in on a pass like that but that time could not kick
00:49:19it into a second gear. Jim Dwight set up San Diego nicely with great field position.
00:49:23Let's take a look at this. Luke Johnson losing the football. He couldn't get rid of it.
00:49:29Picked up and run into the end zone. Touchdown for Derrick Harris. How strange does it get?
00:49:37Johnson had his problems earlier in the day. He saw the rush from Harris and could not get rid of the
00:49:46football. We earlier we talked about the Patriots third quarter collapse. They've just fallen apart
00:49:50here in the fourth quarter. Typically with this play very strange to get the pressure on Lee
00:49:57Johnson but Lee has to secure the ball. You can't pull the ball out and allow that ball to become a
00:50:02fumble. He didn't secure it and have to give Derrick Harris the credit because he pursued the putter and stripped the ball and then scored a touchdown.
00:50:10A backup fullback Derrick Harris, former St. Louis Red Sox side as a free agent. Wade Ritchie with the extra point.
00:50:18And this crowd just looking at one another right now saying what happened? It's a strange play. There
00:50:26you see Harris comes in. Lee Johnson bobbles the snap and he never secures the football. He picks
00:50:32it up and doesn't secure it. Harris is able to get the ball out on the tackle and he has the presence of mind.
00:50:38And you can see, look, he just held up, didn't kick it, but now you have to put the ball away.
00:50:43Derrick Smith has the presence of mind to not only pounce on the football but he gets up and runs it in for a touchdown.
00:50:51So Derrick Harris scores the touchdown for San Diego and just like that it's 26-16.
00:51:02Bill Belichick's team had played well throughout the day but minor miscues here and there
00:51:07turn into major mistakes. And the crowd here at Foxborough Stadium is just stunned. They don't
00:51:14know what to believe. One minute ago they have the have the lead and now they've seen it squandered.
00:51:21They've seen San Diego jump out to a 10-point lead. They figured if there would be some magic here for the
00:51:25Chargers it would come solely from Doug Flutie. Not on special teams, the combination of Tim Dwight
00:51:30and then Derrick Harris firing through to cause the fumble, scoop the football up
00:51:38and take it in for Paydirt. A lot of these Patriots fans are going home. Let's not forget
00:51:42Ronnie Jenkins on the kickoff return. He's helped the Chargers get great field position all day long.
00:51:47Kevin Favre tackled down on the 25-yard line by Steve Hyden. And oh how things have changed here
00:51:56in the fourth quarter in Foxborough. You can follow all the games on NFL.com and after the
00:52:02games get in-depth analysis and recaps from the experts only at NFL.com or AOL keyword NFL.com.
00:52:10Line of scrimmage will be the 26. So instead of punting and putting your defense on the field
00:52:17trying to hold San Diego with a three-point lead, all of a sudden your offense reappears down by 10.
00:52:25Block is moving with 838 left. Antoine Smith has returned as he takes it up the middle and
00:52:30carries to the 35-yard line for a gain of nine. Take one more look. Let's see what Lee Johnson
00:52:38does. He has the football but he looks up he sees the presence of Derrick Harris but hold the
00:52:42football. You have to secure it with two hands and put it away. Lee Johnson just holds the ball out
00:52:48and when he's thrown to the ground that ball comes out. It's live the whole time. Antoine Smith
00:52:53slices through for a first down at the 40-yard line. Give Harris credit. When he began hugging
00:52:58Johnson he got hold of that right hand. That's right. He was able to get the ball out. Not only
00:53:03did he force the fumble, he had the presence of mind to pounce on it. Then after he got the ball
00:53:08he had enough presence of mind to get up with the ball and run it in. Lee Johnson is stunned now but
00:53:14he has to protect the football first and then once the ball is out try to recover it and then make
00:53:19the tackle. Brady sets it up. Antoine Smith to the 45-yard line for a gain of five. Lee Johnson in
00:53:2817th year in the NFL. He's been a member of the Patriots since 1999.
00:53:35This game is not out of reach. This is where Tom Brady has to do a little
00:53:39fluting act of his own and try to get his team back into the ballgame. He's throwing the ball
00:53:44well today. He's going to have to start getting the ball back to Terry Glynn, try to manufacture
00:53:48some yards and now they go to Antoine Smith. Smith inching closer to midfield as he picks up
00:53:53four. He needs to get to the 50 for the first down. Marcellus Wiley with the tackle and some
00:53:58words being exchanged as Seau begins barking across of the Patriots offense and this crowd
00:54:05has been completely taken out of it. They have been and that's why the Patriots are going to
00:54:09have to find a way to make a play on offense. They've moved the ball pretty well against a
00:54:14very tough San Diego Chargers defense. They're going to have to I think keep their poise. There's
00:54:18plenty of time left in this ballgame for him to get back in it. Third and one for New England.
00:54:24Have to get to the 50 and Smith isn't even close. Gerald Dixon wrapped him up. Now Harrison
00:54:31exchanging words with Greg Robinson-Randall. Now with 6.29 to go in this game, what do you do here
00:54:37Salomon? You go for it knowing full well you still need two scores? I think you have to go for it.
00:54:42Fourth and one I think is some makeable down in distance. You have to give yourself a chance but
00:54:47you know they've been going to strictly the running game here running the ball on the
00:54:52last two plays. Well at fourth and two Smith he's got the first down across midfield
00:54:58and down at the San Diego 48. He picked up five. He needed two and this drive continues. Here they
00:55:05just run right off the left side behind Matt Light. He kicks out on Ray Lee Johnson. Antoine
00:55:10Smith hits it up in there right off tackle on the left side. He's able to pick up the first down. He
00:55:15comes out. He's banged up a little bit. He's carried the ball three consecutive times and
00:55:20went on the sideline for a break. Kevin Falk has checked in. Brady wants to throw it.
00:55:27And brought in by Terry Glenn on the far side. Another first down for New England.
00:55:31Out of bounds out around the 35 yard line. Let's see where they spot it. 13 yard game. They'll put
00:55:37it on the 34. And that's the kind of play they need from Tom Brady going to his favorite target
00:55:42so far today and Terry Glenn. They've been working the sidelines very well. Timing up those routes
00:55:47and Terry Glenn makes his first reception of the second half. There is no Drew Bledsoe to come in
00:55:51and save the day. It's all on the right arm of Tom Brady. Outside for Troy Brown. Covered by
00:56:00Taye Coding. And Brown with a good gainer on first down. It's nine yards. And Brady's showing some
00:56:05good poise. He was pressured that time by Ray Lee Johnson. Stood in the pocket right that time with
00:56:10pressure coming right down his backside but he stood in and threw the ball out with it. They
00:56:14fake the spike. Brady now throws it away. By the way, Terry Glenn has gone over 100 yards. Seven
00:56:23catches, 110 yards and the touchdown. Brady just took a hit from Ray Lee Johnson in the pocket.
00:56:30He also took a shot at trying to make something happen against this Chargers defense. That's
00:56:35I think really thinking ahead. He's coming up to the center and he's showing everybody that he's
00:56:40ready to down the ball. He's snapping. He acts like he's going to go down but he comes up throwing
00:56:43looking for Terry Glenn. Now a third and one and even five minutes to go here in the fourth. New
00:56:49England down by 10. 12-yard pass play. Brady to Falk. Falk is moving with 4.45 left to go.
00:57:03They've done a good job of mixing in some pass plays to the receiver and now they bring Kevin
00:57:08Falk out back. He's just a flare out for Falk. He makes the catches, able to elude the first tackler
00:57:14and create some positive situations getting the ball inside the 15-yard line. Line of scrimmage
00:57:19just shy of a 13. Brady in the pocket. Brady does it. In the traffic and twirl down Troy Brown.
00:57:28That's good for 10 yards. Junior Seau told us the difference between Joe Pascal, the
00:57:35defensive coordinator, who's not with him today. Now today Jim Vecchiarelli, he's making the calls.
00:57:40A little bit conservative I think of this defense. They're kind of laying back and allowing the
00:57:44Patriots to catch the ball in front of them. They're not going after the quarterback. No blitzing
00:57:49and they're showing their hand playing straight up. I think they have to do a much better job
00:57:54of trying to confuse a young quarterback like Tom Brady. You have to give him different looks and I
00:57:59think you have to apply some pressure. Off the measurement this will be a first and goal.
00:58:06From the three. And the door is still open for New England to make a game of this.
00:58:11Trailing 26 to 16. Plenty of time left. 4.09 to go. First and goal. Hand up. Antoine Smith
00:58:21pushed backwards. And a loss of three on the play. John Perella, first man to greet him.
00:58:27Perella just blows this play up. Gets excellent penetration. Forcing Antoine Smith to try to
00:58:32bounce outside but the penetration was so great by John Perella. He made the tackle in the backfield.
00:58:37Excellent play. That's what they're going to have to do. They're going to have to pin their ears back
00:58:41and get penetration up the field. Play more aggressive on defense. Something they haven't
00:58:45done in this possession. Brady. Timing catch. Up in the air. And broke it up. A chance for
00:58:52David Patton in a matchup with Alex Molden. And fans wanted the flag. Just good coverage
00:58:58by both men. Rocky Harrison comes over also to try to make the play but that's just
00:59:04good hands. They both have positions. I think they both had hands on one another but you could see
00:59:08he's playing the ball. Gets his hand on the football just as Patton is preparing to make the
00:59:12catch. Block is stopped with 3.38 left in the fourth. Solomon, they need the 7 here. They're
00:59:20down by 10. Of course, you could say settle for the field goal, get the 7 later. If you're this
00:59:23close, you want the 7 here. I think we have to go for 7. No doubt. A 5 receiver look they are going
00:59:30for. Play clock was down to 1. Brady steps up. Fires. Incomplete. Troy Brown, the intended receiver.
00:59:38And now they face a fourth down. They're going to go for a field goal here. You do need two scores.
00:59:44Showing a lot of confidence in Adam Vinatieri. Hopefully he's already missed one field goal here
00:59:50today. So they inch it inside the 5. They had a few cracks at it. And now they have to settle for
00:59:59the 3 points. A 23-yarder asked their defense to stop Flutie and the Chargers and maybe
01:00:04stop Tomlinson depending upon how San Diego plays it. 23-yard attempt. And Vinatieri splits the
01:00:11uprights. This is a 7-point game. San Diego 26, Patriots 19 with 3.31 left.
01:00:3426-19. The Chargers leading the Patriots with 3.31 to go in the 4th.
01:00:40Now San Diego has to be aware here as New England might think about surprising them. Now
01:00:48the Chargers back off. And Vinatieri kicks it through. Ronnie Jenkins. From the 3. Jenkins
01:00:56to the outside. Jenkins turning it upfield. The 31-yard line. 27-yard return for Jenkins.
01:01:06Up in a 9-game winning streak for the New England Patriots over the San Diego Chargers. Have to get
01:01:12back to 1970. Joe Kapp, John Hadle, the two QBs. They played it at Harvard Stadium. Final score,
01:01:20San Diego 16 and the Patriots 14. Bring back some of those newsreel footage.
01:01:29Lance Allworth, one of my all-time favorites. 1970, 31 years ago. That's the last time San
01:01:36Diego got a road win against New England. They've lost 9 straight in the series.
01:01:40Flutie on a handoff. Tomlinson turning the corner and goes down shy of the 40-yard line.
01:01:468-yard gain. Fred McCrary gave him a block up front to work with. Fred McCrary was working
01:01:52against Roman Pfeiffer. Credit Damian Tomlinson with the vision to bounce it outside. That's what
01:01:57he does really well. He can press the hole and then he understands when he has control of the
01:02:01edge and he takes it outside for positive yards. New England still has all three of its timeouts
01:02:06remaining. San Diego with two left. The Chargers just using as much clock as possible now.
01:02:13Leading it by 7, facing a 2nd and 2. They have been held in the running game. Came in one of
01:02:19the best in the NFL in that department. Today New England has done the job in that category.
01:02:25And off Tomlinson diving forward to the 40 for a gain of 1. But it's still short of a first down.
01:02:31Ted Johnson involved in the stop along with Bobby Hamilton. You talked about how the Patriots have
01:02:35done a good job with shutting down the Chargers running game so far today but this is where it's
01:02:39vitally important. You cannot allow the Chargers to manufacture yards on the ground right now and
01:02:44eat up the clock and continue to pick up first downs. Timeout taken. New England using its first
01:02:54timeout here in the second half. They still have two left. Well Saturday, Home Depot SEC Football.
01:03:00The Tennessee Volunteers travel to Tuscaloosa to meet playmaker Freddie Millens and the Alabama
01:03:07Crimson Tide. The excitement begins with Tim Brando and Spencer Tillman on college football
01:03:12today. More college football news. You can check them out at CBS.Sportsline.com. AOL keywords CBS.
01:03:19Sportsline. Now the New England defense is now put under the spotlight. You see Brady and Blitzo.
01:03:27It's a good relationship that's developed. In fact, Brady told us, hey, sometimes the coaches
01:03:31must say one thing and I recognize what their job is but I can go to Drew and ask him questions.
01:03:36He can tell me from a QB's perspective. He's got a good job. I think leaning from an experienced
01:03:41veteran like Drew Blitzo, knowing what the the incumbent quarterback would do in that situation.
01:03:46Drew has been successful 3,000 yards his last seven seasons so you know Tom Brady has a very
01:03:52good mentor in Drew Blitzo. They come up short of the first down so they do face a third and about
01:04:00a foot. Patriots defense put on the spot. That's right. This is money time for the Patriots defense
01:04:07because it's third and one to stop them here. Chargers are going to have to give up the football
01:04:12and hunt it. So this is money time for this defense. Let's see if they can respond and come
01:04:16through in the club. A pivotal play in the waning moments of this ball game. It's been a good one
01:04:22here in Foxborough. Third and one. Floated. On a handoff. Tomlinson. He didn't get there.
01:04:31No gain on the play. New England gets a huge effort from Brian Cox up the middle.
01:04:39And another timeout used by the Pats. They do a good job of getting a push up front on the
01:04:44offensive line. Let's see. They're getting some movement but Ted Johnson and Brian Cox they come
01:04:49in and fill the hole and they know that this ball is going to be ran right behind the fullback.
01:04:54Fred McClary who comes over in the motion. But you know you have to run the ball with a lead
01:04:58blocker. They know what side the ball is going to come to just by where the fullback is.
01:05:03Fluidly upset and rightfully so. This team had a second and two to keep the drive going. Then a
01:05:10third and one and they come up short on both attacks. The Chargers have done a really good
01:05:14job I think of getting the push up front on the offensive line. Something they've really had a
01:05:19tough time doing all day. Forcing Tomlinson to bounce it outside. That's where he's had most of
01:05:25his rushing yards here today. So Darren Bennett has had his problems the last couple of weeks.
01:05:30A dependable kicker, a pro bowl putter. And Troy Brown standing at his own 15 yard line.
01:05:39High pump, sailing. Brown forced a back penalty from the 10 because he had room to work with. He
01:05:44does. Out across the 40. Getting to the outside. And spun down at midfield but a flag of a play.
01:05:5640 yard return after the 50 yard putt. Penalty marker is down at the San Diego 47.
01:06:03Certainly the play that a young quarterback like Tom Brady would need from his special
01:06:07teams to get good field position. But this is going to go against the Patriots. It's coming back.
01:06:15Patriots look to be lined up nicely to make a move here and rally in the late stages. Not the case.
01:06:25During return. Holding. Receiving team. Number 22. 10 yard penalty. From the end of the run.
01:06:33First down. Terrence Shaw. The former Charger. Yeah, Shaw gets nailed on the penalty. Something
01:06:41he's got to do a better job. You have to be smart. He's a seven year veteran. So you can't get called
01:06:46and hurt your football team. You're going to get the ball at the 50 yard line. Give Tom Brady and
01:06:51this offense a short field to try to get a touchdown and tie up this football game. Flag
01:06:56was thrown on the other side of the field as well. That play was working towards the left.
01:07:02And Bill Belichick's team
01:07:04will have it from the 40. It came during the run back. So it does only cost them 10 yards. They're
01:07:10not repunting this ball, which is a huge difference. Still excellent field position with 210
01:07:16remaining in the 4th. 26 to 19. San Diego with the lead. The young Tom Brady trying to lead this team
01:07:25back. Here's Brown. He gets caught after the gain of three. That's going to roll it down to the
01:07:31two minute warning. Rogers Beckett making the stop on the far side. New England down a touchdown
01:07:38with two minutes to play at home.
01:09:24No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No

01:10:24Once again the Chargers defense come out with a lack of intensity not playing real aggressive
01:10:29I think they're playing a little bit soft allowing Brady to have time to complete passes
01:10:34They have to blitz even I think do a little bit more to confuse and put pressure on Brady again has time
01:10:39That's right. This ball is knocked down
01:10:42Leonardo Carson
01:10:44His second year out of Auburn filling in for the injured Jamal Williams
01:10:48And Carson gets a piece of that to stop the clock with a minute 27 left and a second and 10 upcoming for this New
01:10:55England offense Brady also had time to throw the ball on that play. Of course. It was knocked down by Carson
01:11:01But San Diego is gonna have to put pressure on Brady. You have to come after he's a young quarterback
01:11:06You don't want to treat him like he's an experienced quarterback as if it was Drew Bledsoe back
01:11:12second and 10 shotgun from the 45 Brady steps up and
01:11:17And Brown could not bring it in it'll be third and 10
01:11:24Patriots are 1 & 3 this year
01:11:26With Indianapolis Denver and Atlanta all coming up on the road after this game
01:11:31You could see Brady does have time to throw the ball three men rushed by the Chargers
01:11:36It's Terry Glynn right in the hands
01:11:38Tom Brady almost 300 yards passing today. They came in on the average 163 yards per game
01:11:4527th in the league in their passing game
01:11:47He's got a couple of downs here to get a first down and move the change on a third and 10
01:11:53Brady
01:11:55Still has the time
01:12:01Inside the 30 16 yards ago
01:12:07Clock is moving down to 104 left
01:12:12first in 10 from the 29
01:12:15New England still has one timeout left under a minute to go
01:12:27On a sideline throw
01:12:30And every down is just a three or four man rush
01:12:34Lyman are starting to wear it out a little bit getting a little tired and can't sustain a pass rush on Brady
01:12:39He's very comfortable standing in the pocket buying time
01:12:42Trying to wait for his receivers to get open
01:12:46San Diego just looking to hold on and the Chargers have a player down. We can't make out that number from this angle
01:12:5626 to 19 San Diego leading New England with an even 50 seconds left
01:13:04And play has been stopped because of an
01:13:07injury
01:13:08And I think whenever you're playing a young quarterback
01:13:10You have to do a really good job of mixing up your pass rushing
01:13:14And I think you also have to do a good job of mixing up the coverages behind the pass rush
01:13:18Giving him some zone looks and sometimes a man look right now
01:13:21I think they're playing very basic and straight up against Brady right now in the fourth quarter looks like Alex molded on his back
01:13:29Sixth year pro the former Saint out of Oregon
01:13:32He was a spot starter last year with New Orleans
01:13:35He played well a free agent and signed on as one of the two new corners with the San Diego Chargers
01:13:41Replacing Duran Jenkins and Darrell Lewis along with Ryan McNeil
01:13:47He got spilled out in coverage and you couldn't pick up anything off that replay that stood out
01:13:53Difficulty failed on top of the knee of Terry Glynn. Maybe caught a knee in the ribs
01:13:59Really difficult to tell
01:14:02Sustained the injury
01:14:04So Davis Sanchez first-year player out of Oregon as well would step in for molded
01:14:10And he's able to walk it off with a bit of a limp as he goes to the sideline
01:14:16It'll be second and ten for New England
01:14:19from the 29
01:14:21The difference in this game right now
01:14:24Lee Johnson was unable to get a fun off and Derek Harris a backup
01:14:29Force the fumble and then took it in for the score. That's your seven-point differential
01:14:3426 to 19
01:14:36Brady steps up
01:14:4926 yards
01:14:51No, England uses its final time out
01:14:55We met with Tom Brady he came into the room
01:14:58We said this is a very confident young man only second year the National Football League
01:15:02But look at the time only a three-man rush you allow him to grow in confidence as the game goes on and now you're in
01:15:08Crucial moments of the game and he's at his best in terms of that confidence
01:15:12He comes in and this is just a bullet a strike to David Patton who makes an excellent grab
01:15:17Able to pick up some additional yards after the catch, but again it all starts with the lack of a pass rush
01:15:23You're asking your secondary to make plays, but you're giving the quarterback all day to throw the ball
01:15:27It's like seven on seven for a quarterback
01:15:29Patriots have used their final timeout. Don't forget about some of the other quirks missed extra point from New England missed extra point from San Diego
01:15:3926 to 19 Chargers leading the Pats 40 seconds to go here in the fourth from Foxborough a first and goal from the four
01:15:48Smith in the backfield with Edwards
01:16:00Jermaine Wiggins
01:16:09Just an excellent play called by the office of coordinator Charlie Weiss little smoke and mirrors here
01:16:16Everyone's got their eyes on the crossing receiver
01:16:19Terry Glenn
01:16:20It's just a wonderful play Jermaine Wiggins able to get open in the back of the end zone Tom Brady showed poise throughout the drive
01:16:27They're completing passes to receivers, but he had the time to throw the ball and that's the key captain
01:16:32Come back has been known as a term used for Doug
01:16:45We're tied at 26 with 36 seconds left
01:16:49We talk about smoke and mirrors you see Terry Glenn coming across the frame
01:16:52Rodney Harrison everyone bites up on it Jermaine Wiggins is able to get behind the defense and able to get open just an excellent play
01:17:02Wonderful Roger Beckett can't get back in time
01:17:05Look at the coaches you see there. They know it's gonna come open
01:17:09They're wondering if the young quarterback will have the boys to complete the pass Tom Brady over 300 yards passing in the game an important
01:17:15Point just to bring out here San Diego had two timeouts remaining but because of the injury to mold and they lost one of those
01:17:22Timeouts the dove Flutie has one timeout left to work with with 36 seconds to go on the fourth
01:17:3126 26
01:17:38Doug Flutie itching to get out of the field. This is from earlier Bennett Terry
01:17:44extra point
01:17:45He missed it
01:17:47But then it was San Diego that gave that point back
01:17:51tit-for-tat
01:17:54When they were unable to complete on a conversion
01:17:56That's the team's very important when you can't get your extra points and you miss field goals and when you don't secure the pot
01:18:04And hold on to the football you allow teams to make plays you find yourself in the situation at the end of the game
01:18:0926 seconds left and you're all tied up and it's when it dawns on you that every little thing counts in a football game
01:18:15second touchdown of the season for Wiggins fluting waiting
01:18:20He will get his chance
01:18:24Kicked off by Vinatier Jenkins is standing at his own
01:18:41He got stolen
01:18:43Joe's it's coming in. He's just trying to get off the block and he just beelines for the ball carrier
01:18:50Just an excellent play by the Bucky Jones beating the block
01:18:54It's just really good job. Then Arnold Carson's trying to block the Bucky Jones. He defeats the block comes off
01:19:01Squares up on Ronnie Jenkins Ronnie Jenkins never saw it coming. He's thinking Carson's gonna hold the block, but he's unable to
01:19:0723
01:19:0923 yard line, that's where San Diego starts out with 31 seconds left for Doug
01:19:24On a handoff Tomlinson
01:19:26Bursting through the hole out across the 35-yard line
01:19:31We mentioned San Diego only has the one timeout left. They use it
01:19:35A 14-yard game and the clock is stopped with 23 seconds remaining
01:19:47Don't forget coming up next game two of the doubleheader here on CBS, Denver visits, Seattle
01:19:53Or Miami taking on the Jets at the Meadowlands that's coming up immediately following our coverage of the Patriots and the Chargers
01:20:00We
01:20:04Asked if Tom Brady could match the magic of Doug Flutie and lead his team back and he answers and now
01:20:11It's up to the maestro. Doug Flutie's been here before and this is what his team expects me
01:20:16They need the leadership on offense. He's provided so far this season
01:20:20Right now he has an opportunity to save the San Diego Chargers
01:20:25They have to get to a bunch of 35-yard line to give Richie even a chance to win it with a field goal
01:20:32No timeouts left. Keep in mind Flutie scrambling through
01:20:37incomplete
01:20:39And the clock is moving down to 12 seconds left
01:20:44Clock continues to roll as Flutie has to spike it quickly
01:20:49Down to four seconds left Flutie takes his time
01:20:53One second remaining on the game clock
01:21:01And Doug Flutie
01:21:04Was able to stop it, but
01:21:06They could not get extra yardage for their kicker
01:21:09This is where they're gonna miss the timeout used on the injury by Alex Modin
01:21:14When the Patriots last had the ball, they wasted the timeout now
01:21:18They don't get another shot. That ball was caught by Curtis Conway who did slide out of bounds
01:21:23But they ruled him inbounds and down and apparently the defender must have touched him while he was still inbounds
01:21:32This is going to be a 57-yard attempt
01:21:37For the win
01:21:39Kicking into the win
01:21:41Wade Richie
01:21:43His career long is 52
01:21:4552
01:21:50Clay is going to be reviewed. Was the catch clean? I guess is the first thought
01:21:56Or was he touched before he slid out of bounds?
01:21:59This is not a coach's challenge. Keep in mind in the final
01:22:03Two minutes. This is reviewed upstairs when they feel there's a play that's up in the air
01:22:09Could be reviewed for clock purposes as well. That's another possibility
01:22:16Just
01:22:19One tick of the clock left
01:22:21Doug Flutie was trying to get the Chargers to the line of scrimmage so he could spike it and maybe get one more playoff
01:22:26And get some extra yardage for Richie to work with. That's where the leadership of Flutie does pay off
01:22:31But the clock was moving and the Chargers couldn't get there
01:22:34Let's take a look to see if he was able to spike this ball
01:22:37The ball came out of his hand while his hand was going backwards and they you know
01:22:41To see if this was your right forward pass. You're absolutely mouthing for the ball
01:22:47Before his hand was going forward. This may be rude to fumble in the Patriots ball with one second left on the clock
01:22:52I think you're absolutely right. He did not have possession. He lost the football
01:22:56As he was trying to throw it down Brian Cox just jumped on it
01:23:03They're going to review whether or not Wade Richie is even going to have a crack at this 57 yard field goal
01:23:08And if he's the official was seeing what I'm seeing there's enough evidence right there to overturn it and award the ball
01:23:15to belong to the New England Patriots
01:23:18You've got to throw it directly into the ground to stop the clock. He lost the football
01:23:27He lost it, that's a fumble heads up play by Brian Cox
01:23:34One second left
01:23:38The officials talking this one over trying to determine a who has the ball and how much time remaining
01:23:58Wait a second the whistle because of the whistle
01:24:05Wow, this is being ruled
01:24:08a spike
01:24:09What do you think the fans are gonna say if this kick is made by the Chargers?
01:24:14they're gonna go back to that play and
01:24:17Telling you it's not going to be a happy time
01:24:19The inadvertent whistle they moved it back five yards turning this
01:24:25two yards turning it into a 59 yard attempt for the win
01:24:28Bennett the holder, David Bennett will snap
01:24:30Wade Richie leans into it, the kick is on the way
01:24:32and short
01:24:39We are going to overtime
01:24:42With the Pats and Chargers tied at 26
01:24:46We have seen some strange things in this game this afternoon
01:24:53It's a straight kick he had the location just not enough leg
01:25:03Richie thought he had it after it came off his foot
01:25:08Not quite enough on it to end this game right here. Instead. We go to an extra set
01:25:15San Diego Chargers, they have traveled a long way to the East Coast for this game after traveling to Cleveland last week
01:25:25The New England Patriots in a desperate situation at one in three and three straight road games upcoming on the schedule
01:25:39What's your call?
01:25:40His call is tails
01:25:42His call is tails
01:25:44It is tails
01:25:46San Diego won the toss
01:25:52So San Diego has won the toss they'll receive it to open play at the end of regulation
01:25:57Overtime is next in Foxboro
01:25:59Chargers and Patriots tied at 26

01:28:10NFL on CBS continues with doubleheader action coming up Miami at the Jets or Denver at Seattle stay tuned
01:28:17Following our coverage of the Patriots and the Chargers
01:28:20Here from Foxboro
01:28:2426
01:28:2526
01:28:26Overtime here in New England
01:28:28Overtime here in New England
01:28:33Chargers will get the football first
01:28:35Vinatario will kick it off to Ronnie Jenkins
01:28:37And you think back when San Diego had the football a third and one
01:28:41And a chance to keep the drive going
01:28:43Keep the New England offense off the field
01:28:45They couldn't get the push from the offensive line
01:28:47And was forced to punt
01:28:49Tom Brady took over from there
01:28:51Led his team to a touchdown
01:28:54Vinatario on the kick
01:28:56Jenkins from the line
01:28:59Jenkins looking for the angle
01:29:01Jenkins squeezing through a hole
01:29:03And brought down at the 40 yard line
01:29:0639 yard return
01:29:08And special teams continues to be a problem
01:29:10For this New England club
01:29:12Otis Smith making the tackle
01:29:14Ronnie Jenkins continues to do a good job
01:29:16On kickoff return for the San Diego Chargers
01:29:18Has good vision leading up behind
01:29:20Terrell Fletcher getting a good block
01:29:22And really good field position
01:29:24Something the Chargers have enjoyed all day long
01:29:26Taking the ball over at their own 40 yard line
01:29:28One of the reasons they went out and signed
01:29:30Wade Ritchie is because he had a bigger leg
01:29:32Than the veteran John Carney
01:29:35They're trying to get Ritchie into a position
01:29:37Where he can give this team a win in overtime
01:29:39Fluted over the head of McCrary
01:29:41Incomplete
01:29:43It'll be second and ten
01:29:45Timeout situation
01:29:47Each team given two as we start play
01:29:49In the extra session
01:29:51Wade Ritchie had a chance from 59 yards away
01:29:53At the end of regulation to win it
01:29:55And came up short
01:29:57He didn't need much more to get it through
01:29:59So in signs of strong leg
01:30:01He may get another opportunity here in overtime
01:30:06Chargers have been a feel good story
01:30:08In the NFL after going 1-15 last year
01:30:12Chance to go 4-1 with a victory here today
01:30:15Fluted, quick drop, quick throw
01:30:17Underneath Terrell Fletcher
01:30:20And he is met quickly by Malloy
01:30:22A gain of five
01:30:26Malloy does a good job of closing in
01:30:28On Terrell Fletcher
01:30:30He's taken the back out in space
01:30:32Man to man coverage
01:30:34Fletcher makes the catch
01:30:36Does a good job of holding on to the football
01:30:38But after getting hit very hard by Malloy
01:30:40Now a third and five for Fluting in the Chargers
01:30:50Crowd making noise
01:30:52First minute of play in overtime
01:30:54Out of the shotgun, Fluting
01:30:56Throw, dive and attack
01:30:58Tim Dwight
01:31:00Incomplete
01:31:02Chargers will part
01:31:06This is where the top players have to make big plays
01:31:08Fluting looking for Tim Dwight
01:31:10But you can see the defender forcing Fluty
01:31:12To get the ball high and up in the air
01:31:14Misfires here
01:31:16This ball could be thrown a little bit better by Fluty
01:31:20But he had a defender in his face
01:31:22And so you have to give the Patriots credit
01:31:24Made play on defense
01:31:26Forced a three and out
01:31:28Now they'll get the ball
01:31:30Get a chance to win the football game
01:31:32Off the punt, wobbly punt
01:31:34Takes a bounce
01:31:36San Diego is ready
01:31:38And they touch it up at the 22 yard line
01:31:4032 yard punt
01:31:42For Darren Bennett
01:31:44And now Tom Brady will get his chance
01:31:46Doug Fluty
01:31:48Opportunity, getting the football first
01:31:50Here in the extra session
01:31:54Brady over in conference
01:31:56With Drew Bledsoe
01:31:58He's already thrown 51 passes on the day
01:32:00Completing 30
01:32:02Already over 300 yards on the day
01:32:04But I think the key thing, there you see
01:32:06No interceptions
01:32:08He hasn't thrown any interceptions
01:32:10Since filling in for Drew Bledsoe
01:32:12Very young quarterback, really keeping his poise
01:32:14And his wits about him
01:32:16A little heavy here today
01:32:18Filling in for Drew Bledsoe
01:32:20Brady at Michigan, sat behind Brian Greasy
01:32:22During the national championship year
01:32:24For the Wolverines
01:32:28First and ten, line of scrimmage
01:32:30The 23
01:32:32Checking off the line is Brady
01:32:34Play clock is down to three
01:32:36Here comes the rush
01:32:38Brady steps up, throws it low
01:32:40Deep ball, down the sideline
01:32:42Incomplete
01:32:44Swagged out
01:32:46Alex Molden with the coverage
01:32:52Swagged thrown at the 39 yard line
01:32:54Boy, what poise
01:32:56By the young quarterback Tom Brady
01:32:58We already talked about in the fourth quarter
01:33:00How we thought this San Diego Chargers defense
01:33:02Was playing a little bit conservative
01:33:04And now
01:33:06And now in overtime
01:33:08They decide to blitz the young quarterback
01:33:10Has one-on-one coverage outside
01:33:12With David Patton, Alex Molden
01:33:14Has to find the football, get back inside
01:33:16Give Patton credit for coming back inside
01:33:18Working his way back to the ball
01:33:20That's where contact is made
01:33:22Because the receiver comes back to the ball
01:33:24Molden could not find it in the air
01:33:26Gets contact before the ball arrives
01:33:28A 37 yard penalty
01:33:30Gives New England a first down
01:33:32At the San Diego 40 yard line
01:33:36Out of the shotgun, Brady
01:33:38Steps up, guns it
01:33:40Underneath the coverage to Patton
01:33:42And a catch made at the 32 yard line
01:33:44Good for 8 yards
01:33:48Getting extra yardage
01:33:50For Adam Vinatieri
01:33:54We are in overtime
01:33:56Tied at 26, San Diego and New England
01:34:00Patriots rally in the fourth
01:34:02To force the 18
01:34:04And a handoff, and surrounded
01:34:06Antoine Smith
01:34:08Brought down at the 35
01:34:10It's a loss of three
01:34:12You have to wonder if the Patriots are playing for the field goal
01:34:14Taking the ball out of the hands of Tom Brady
01:34:16Who's been so hot
01:34:18He ran the blitz
01:34:20That time San Diego was coming right up the middle
01:34:22And that's where the Patriots call the run play
01:34:24Goes for nothing
01:34:26So you have to wonder if they're just playing for the field goal
01:34:28At this point
01:34:30Right now it would be a 53 yard attempt
01:34:32No gimme by any stretch
01:34:34No doubt, they have to continue to make plays
01:34:36They're playing with the play called on
01:34:38On that particular play
01:34:40Giving it to Antoine Smith right up the middle
01:34:42Right where you see the Chargers
01:34:44Defensing blitzes I should say
01:34:46Kevin Faulk in the backfield now
01:34:48Play clock down to one
01:34:50Third and five, Brady
01:34:52Rush coming, he gets rid of it
01:34:54Kevin Faulk down the sideline
01:34:56And a first down for New England
01:34:58What a big play for this Patriots offense
01:35:06With the pressure on Tom Brady
01:35:08Coming off the top, there's Gerald Dixon
01:35:10He's coming in, he gets the hit
01:35:12But he's poised, this is a touch pass
01:35:14Very difficult pass to complete
01:35:16But he has touch on it, he lofts it over the head
01:35:18Of the oncoming defender
01:35:20Gets it right over to Kevin Faulk
01:35:22Who makes the catch without breaking stride
01:35:24Down to the 26 yard line
01:35:26And now Vinatieri can breathe a little easier
01:35:28A first and ten for New England
01:35:32Hand off, Smith
01:35:34Stilled out for a loss on the play
01:35:36He lost three on that run
01:35:38And Orlando Ruff read it perfectly
01:35:40Ruff came up to make the tackle
01:35:44Patriots haven't been able to really manufacture
01:35:46Any rushing yards today
01:35:48Been very tough for them to run the football
