Pat and Matt discuss the Patriots losing to the Chargers 6-0 in the rain at Gillette Stadium, and keeping themselves in the hunt for the #1 overall pick
Transcript
00:00:00 All right, welcome into an instant reaction podcast from the Patriot Nation network over
00:00:07 here.
00:00:08 It's your boy Pat Lane, as always my guy Matt St. Jean.
00:00:10 And as always, this episode is brought to you by FanDuel.
00:00:14 Go to fanduel.com/boston.
00:00:15 They are the official sports wagering partner of CLNS Media.
00:00:21 And Matt, this is no short, nothing less than one of the worst games I've ever seen in my
00:00:27 entire life.
00:00:28 It was absolutely atrocious on all ends of it.
00:00:31 The Patriots were terrible, but the Chargers didn't play much better.
00:00:34 No, I mean, it's kind of funny.
00:00:37 Like the game today, like it's just, it's, it's so like insane and sad that we've come
00:00:45 back around it being like kind of morbidly hilarious to watch for this team has become,
00:00:50 especially when it's like, I think the point that broke me today was when the offense finally
00:00:56 showed signs of life and the offensive lines just plowing through and Ramon Ray's getting
00:01:01 it done.
00:01:02 And then of course he gets hurt, fumbles the ball in the process and that's it.
00:01:06 And I was like, all right, well that's, that's the game.
00:01:08 And I mean, that's how the season's gone too.
00:01:09 I know we're going to get into the offensive woes, but just another injury into the pile
00:01:14 and defense is good enough to keep it a one score game.
00:01:17 Patriots now lead the league in one score losses this season, I believe with seven,
00:01:22 they flashed that during the game.
00:01:24 So it's unreal.
00:01:25 It's 2023 new England Patriots.
00:01:26 I mean, we're close, but all right.
00:01:27 I forgot to do the intro song.
00:01:28 Here's the intro song and listen, this is one I'm shocked and maybe, maybe it's just
00:01:35 because you even said you didn't know, you didn't know this song.
00:01:38 I'm surprised they didn't play this too young, Pat.
00:01:40 I guess that's true.
00:01:41 I was surprised I didn't play this at the game, but so I'm rectifying that problem right
00:01:45 here.
00:01:46 And we got, I think, I think we got a pretty good intro.
00:01:48 Here we go.
00:01:49 That's enough.
00:01:50 I mean, I was like, I'm an idiot back in the day with Missy Elliott with Timberland.
00:01:53 That song, but I was like, they got to play.
00:01:55 I can't stand the rain.
00:01:56 They did not.
00:01:57 But as Matt pointed out, they did play C-slow CCR.
00:02:00 Have you ever seen the rain coming down on a, on a sunny day?
00:02:04 And everyone was singing along.
00:02:06 Yeah.
00:02:07 If there's for anybody out there who hasn't checked it out, there's an old article now
00:02:12 must be three or four years old that the athletic did.
00:02:14 It was an interview with the guy who DJs the Patriots games.
00:02:18 And also I think the Bruins and Celtics, and he talked about having a whole playlist for
00:02:21 like rain games for songs to play in those scenarios.
00:02:24 And have you ever seen the rain was on there?
00:02:26 And now every single time I hear it played at Gillette, I think back to that one article.
00:02:31 So I'll have to see if I can find it and tweet it out later.
00:02:34 And the guys on Twitter too, I think he, I think if you're at sporting events, he's DJing
00:02:38 and you like tweet at him with a song request.
00:02:40 Sometimes he plays it.
00:02:41 So that's a cool, that's a cool idea.
00:02:44 Maybe next time, next time with the tweet, maybe that would have worked out if I had
00:02:47 tweeted at him like, Hey, get up, play don't can't stay in the rain by Missy Elliott.
00:02:50 Like, come on now.
00:02:51 So but but no, anyways, look, I mean, it was an awful game as Matt pointed out, we did
00:02:56 meet up, I think right before halftime, which was cool.
00:02:59 I was cool.
00:03:00 Again, not me.
00:03:01 Yes, that's correct.
00:03:03 Not not this, Matt.
00:03:04 You have met Matt.
00:03:05 You've met Matt Minito more times than you've met me.
00:03:10 That's true.
00:03:11 So only one.
00:03:12 So but now it's cool.
00:03:16 It's cool.
00:03:17 It's it's.
00:03:18 Yeah, it was it was just it was so bad.
00:03:22 And you know, I said to Matt, like, I didn't care.
00:03:26 Like I cared because, of course, I care.
00:03:29 But I'm like, I have a voice.
00:03:31 I wasn't yelling.
00:03:32 I wasn't screaming.
00:03:33 I wasn't normally at the games.
00:03:35 I don't have a voice because I'm yelling and screaming.
00:03:36 And my wife even said to me, she's like, wait, how come you have a voice?
00:03:41 Like, what's going on?
00:03:42 And I was like, what am I supposed to yell at?
00:03:43 There's nothing to get mad at.
00:03:44 There's nothing to get excited about.
00:03:45 Like, it's just, you know, it's you you want them to lose, right, because we want to get
00:03:52 the pick.
00:03:53 And now because Arizona won today, they're in the number two slot.
00:03:57 Carolina was in the lead for about four seconds.
00:03:59 But but because because, you know, because Arizona wins, now you're in the two spot.
00:04:04 You want to get the best pick possible.
00:04:06 Right.
00:04:07 What's challenging about that is that it becomes difficult to, you know, to feel good about
00:04:14 the team and to enjoy the team when they're playing so poorly.
00:04:20 Right.
00:04:21 Yeah.
00:04:22 I will say, like the the other the other one for me is that I just feel like, as you said,
00:04:29 they've lost a ton of one score games, right?
00:04:31 They have 10 losses, seven of them went by one score.
00:04:34 They got blown out by the Cowboys and they got blown up by the Saints and they get blown
00:04:39 up by another team.
00:04:43 They had the what do you call it?
00:04:44 They didn't get blown out.
00:04:45 It was the two score loss to the Dolphins, which was a one score game late in the fourth.
00:04:49 Right.
00:04:50 Right.
00:04:51 And that's it.
00:04:52 Gave up that play.
00:04:53 And that was I think that was Jack Jones who messed up that assignment on the way Dolphins
00:04:56 was.
00:04:57 Yeah, it was kind of the play that started things in the final descent there out of the
00:05:01 building for him.
00:05:02 Yeah.
00:05:03 And so, you know, it's one of those it's one of those things.
00:05:05 But like it's.
00:05:06 I don't know, man, like the fact that seven of those games are one score games.
00:05:12 I mean, it's pretty impressive the fact that the defense has kept them in it.
00:05:16 I mean, today was an example was just like, do anything.
00:05:20 Just do anything.
00:05:21 I mean, they lost six to nothing.
00:05:25 Like, it's insane to think about.
00:05:29 And I think what's really funny, too, is you look at the stats, the Patriots and the Chargers
00:05:32 have the same number of first downs.
00:05:34 The Patriots outgained them by 16 yards, had more yards per play and killed them on the
00:05:40 ground 148 to 29 there.
00:05:44 But you know, penalties had less penalties for less yards than L.A. did.
00:05:48 But there's the one turnover in there which kills you.
00:05:52 And I think it was what the punt return.
00:05:54 Is that what it was that set up the other field goal for the Chargers?
00:05:58 There was not a single snap taken inside the red zone for this entire game on either team,
00:06:04 except for I think the last meal down by the Chargers.
00:06:07 That's right after the yeah, which was at the 20 yard line.
00:06:11 So it's that kind of football game.
00:06:15 I look at a game like this and the way it went down and I it's one of two things.
00:06:19 Either Staley and the GM there for the Chargers need to go immediately.
00:06:27 Or this means Bill Belichick needs to stay like it's one of those because there's there's
00:06:33 no reason this should have been a one score game.
00:06:35 We have the Patriots played today and yet here we are.
00:06:38 Well you know what's what's interesting about it is that someone tweeted out.
00:06:43 I don't remember who was someone tweeted out that you know, Quentin Johnson's one of the
00:06:46 worst first down first first round Titans ever ever made.
00:06:52 That was this Nikhil Harry.
00:06:54 Yeah, sorry wide receiver.
00:06:56 First I was he was easy to assume.
00:06:59 Yeah, the problem is I'm all screwed up.
00:07:00 I'm watching.
00:07:01 I said first down and I said tight end.
00:07:02 I'm watching the Chiefs game right now and they just do it first down past the tails
00:07:05 with boyfriend.
00:07:06 But, but it's you know the thing about it is that.
00:07:11 He's really bad.
00:07:12 He's really bad.
00:07:13 He's slow.
00:07:14 He can't catch very well.
00:07:17 It's just like what?
00:07:18 What did they see in him to have him be the first wide receiver taken to draft him over
00:07:25 both Zay Flowers and Jordan Addison?
00:07:28 I just don't see.
00:07:29 I don't understand.
00:07:31 It's like when the Patriots have to Nikhil Harry.
00:07:32 It's like I just don't understand what you saw in that guy.
00:07:36 When this is and this is this is worse than the Harry one to me because at least Harry
00:07:40 was like super productive and like his tape was questionable, but he was also like very
00:07:45 consistent with what he was good at and he had what looked like legitimate football skills.
00:07:51 Right by the way, I didn't.
00:07:54 Sorry as Matt pointed out, he was the second wide receiver taken.
00:07:56 Yeah, that means that pointed out second wide receiver.
00:07:58 Yes, and went went 20 instead of 21.
00:08:01 Yes, but Quentin Johnston.
00:08:03 I had him as a first round receiver, but he was also very much a boomer bust guy.
00:08:07 Freak athlete can do everything on a football field.
00:08:11 Can he catch the football?
00:08:13 Can you run routes sometimes?
00:08:16 How often you know is really a big question mark.
00:08:18 You watch his highlight reel and he looks like he could be Devonta Adams out there and
00:08:24 you also watch some of his games and you question why this guy had a scholarship in college
00:08:29 like that.
00:08:30 Yeah, that's how it was and I don't mind buying in on a guy like that in the first round,
00:08:35 but my thing for the Chargers is like you're the Chargers are with the Patriots are right
00:08:39 now, but just like supercharged in that their offense has a lid on it.
00:08:45 They have nobody who can stretch the field.
00:08:47 Everything's within 10 yards.
00:08:48 The problem for the Chargers is they can't run the ball at all.
00:08:51 Their offensive line is awful.
00:08:53 They have no team speed, so even though they have a superhuman quarterback who can throw
00:08:56 the ball 75 yards, you can't take advantage of it at all.
00:08:59 So you're just living in these tight windows, living in these third and longs, and that's
00:09:03 why it looks like what the Patriots do.
00:09:05 And well, and when Johnson was always a raw developmental guy, why you're counting on
00:09:09 a guy like that in year one change that makes no sense.
00:09:13 Save flowers and Jordan Hanson were both much more polished guys who are also legitimate
00:09:18 deep threats right now.
00:09:20 And passing on them, I think is, you know, yeah, you know, it's one of the things that
00:09:29 one of the things for me, right, is like if, if you're in that situation and I think, I
00:09:35 think what they, what they have in spades, by the way, what they have a lot is guys that
00:09:42 are big guys that are skilled and go get the ball.
00:09:46 Shane Lound does a great job of it, right?
00:09:51 Mike Mike Williams is a great job, but Mike wins hurt all the time, but still, yeah.
00:09:55 Josh Palmer, he's good at it.
00:09:57 Yeah, but he's injured.
00:10:00 They don't have any fast guys.
00:10:01 Why?
00:10:02 Zay flowers would be the perfect guy for that situation.
00:10:06 He's got the speed.
00:10:07 And even if you want to go with that, with Addison, there was a guys that can stretch
00:10:10 the field, right?
00:10:12 They can, they can beat you with their speed.
00:10:14 They don't have a guy like that.
00:10:16 And they went out and drafted essentially at his best at Mike Williams clone.
00:10:21 And so when you have Mike Williams already by drafting another guy like Mike Williams,
00:10:24 it doesn't make any sense.
00:10:25 And Quentin Johnson could become like that deep threat, I think, cause he has the really
00:10:29 high end speed, but we knew it was going to take a little bit of time for him to collect.
00:10:33 He was, you know, you look at the reason I said Devante Adams, it took Devante Adams
00:10:37 like three or four years in the league to put it all together and break out.
00:10:40 And that's the kind of guy Johnson would be if, if, if he does end up succeeding here
00:10:44 in the NFL.
00:10:45 And I just, um, I didn't, I never got that.
00:10:50 There was kind of an obvious planning spot here.
00:10:51 And then beyond the deep threat stuff, they also don't have guys who create after the
00:10:55 catch Keenan Allen used to be that guy.
00:10:57 He still is that guy at points, but you know, he's old now you can see it.
00:11:00 He's not consistent.
00:11:01 He doesn't have that juice anymore and give it like, it's basically all possession receivers.
00:11:07 So giving a guy who had after the catch juice, like either of those guys we talked about,
00:11:11 I think made sense.
00:11:12 Johnston has it in theory, but he's more, you know, schemed touches.
00:11:16 He's a very different athlete than like Cadareus Tony, but it's still very much the same schematic
00:11:22 problems on offense.
00:11:23 Right?
00:11:24 Yeah.
00:11:25 So it's strange, but anyways, that back to the actual game, I mean, there was almost
00:11:30 nothing to see.
00:11:31 It was crazy.
00:11:32 I mean, the Patriots defense, I think they're approaching elite level.
00:11:37 Like they're getting to the point where the Patriots defense is very close to elite.
00:11:45 Um, and you know, I think that the charges offense, as I said, isn't necessarily, you
00:11:51 know, hasn't been the best all year long, but my goodness, man, the Patriots, the Patriots
00:11:58 defense just consistently, and we're talking about, you know, John Jones, JC Jackson, Miles
00:12:04 Bryant, but Jalen Lowe's made a player too.
00:12:07 Right.
00:12:08 I mean, we're not talking about guys in the secondary and, you know, and obviously Doug
00:12:11 is back there and whatnot, but like, and then you have Barmore at the middle.
00:12:15 God shot.
00:12:16 I thought I had a good game today.
00:12:17 Lawrence guy played pretty well.
00:12:19 I thought Anthony Jennings is a guy that I think is proving himself to be a guy that
00:12:25 is a reliable edge player, maybe not a pass rusher, but he's certainly a reliable edge
00:12:30 player against the run.
00:12:31 And he's been solid against the run all year long.
00:12:34 It was again today made some really nice plays today.
00:12:37 So even Josh, who's Jamie to play today, which is like, yeah, I haven't heard his name in
00:12:41 a month and a half.
00:12:42 So it was nice.
00:12:43 It was nice to see.
00:12:44 Yeah.
00:12:45 Well, it's funny to say that they're elite, but also right now they're really bad at forcing
00:12:49 turnovers.
00:12:50 That's still something they have not been able to do all season long.
00:12:52 And they still can't rush the passer.
00:12:53 I think today was honestly a lot of LA not being very good on offense.
00:12:59 Like I think there was a lot of that.
00:13:01 And I mean, the other issue, like I think Patriots defense is doing a good job shutting
00:13:05 teams down on the scoreboard right now.
00:13:07 I do think some of that has to do with one, the teams they're playing and to the fact
00:13:12 that opponents know you only need to score about 10 points and you're guaranteed to win.
00:13:18 This stretch is against Gardner Minshew, Tommy DeVito.
00:13:21 And I mean, I trust and Herbert's a good quarterback.
00:13:23 So he doesn't belong in that group, but a rainy day in Foxborough with depleted offense.
00:13:29 So listen, you're not wrong.
00:13:31 Take it.
00:13:32 Yeah.
00:13:33 They've allowed 26 points in three games.
00:13:34 Like that's pretty good.
00:13:35 Right.
00:13:36 And now it's the best three game stretch of any defense this season, I believe.
00:13:39 Yes.
00:13:40 And they've allowed what?
00:13:41 68 in the last five.
00:13:43 I mean, 60, he can't 68 points at five games is nothing to sneeze at.
00:13:47 Right.
00:13:48 And so they're keeping teams off the scoreboard.
00:13:50 Right.
00:13:51 Right.
00:13:52 And the problem for them is they're not forcing turnovers.
00:13:53 And I think the part of that comes from the fact that you don't have any elite pass rushers
00:13:57 right now.
00:13:58 I think Christian Barmore is a very, very good player on the inside.
00:14:02 The problem is, is because double team on every play, because he's the only pass rusher
00:14:06 they have.
00:14:07 Yeah.
00:14:08 Well, what are we going to do?
00:14:10 And Josh usually can't beat.
00:14:13 Nevermind him at double team.
00:14:14 He can't be one guy to get in the back for the play.
00:14:17 So if they've also been in these positions where, you know, it's first down and you got
00:14:21 Anthony Jennings out there because the other team might run and Josh can't get on the field,
00:14:25 which limits the down and down effect.
00:14:28 So I think if you took this defense and you add Christian Gonzalez, Marcus Jones and Matt
00:14:32 John back to it.
00:14:33 Yeah, they're elite, I think the way they're playing.
00:14:35 And I think that makes everybody else better.
00:14:37 And I think there are still some holes you want to fill on this defense.
00:14:41 But I think this is this is a defense you can win a Super Bowl with that, I believe
00:14:46 wholeheartedly when it's healthy and you look at who's going to be on this team next year,
00:14:51 who's going to be on this defense next year, even if we forget Kyle Duggar and what's going
00:14:55 to go on there.
00:14:56 I feel really good about where this defense is and the way they can fill it out in free
00:14:59 agency.
00:15:00 So, yeah, they should have a championship able defense here for the next year or two.
00:15:05 Minimum, it's just about, you know, if you get an offense that can do literally anything,
00:15:11 a quarterback who can read defenses and throw the ball down the field, right?
00:15:16 And receivers who will support their quarterbacks.
00:15:19 Shout out to Vontae Parker.
00:15:21 What a scumbag that guy is, dude.
00:15:23 Yeah, man, just he drives me crazy.
00:15:25 He's going to be off the team, too, because it's Juju's contract is tougher to move.
00:15:30 You can really only get rid of it if you trade him.
00:15:33 And I don't think somebody is going to take him.
00:15:34 And he's a good locker room guy.
00:15:36 So I think Juju is probably here next year as a depth receiver, veteran presence, kind
00:15:40 of that type of guy.
00:15:42 And Parker is see you on March or whatever.
00:15:45 First day of the league year.
00:15:46 It stinks, man.
00:15:48 And like my cousin, shout out to my cousin who like loves Devante Parker, like loves
00:15:53 him.
00:15:54 He's like, oh, he's a beast.
00:15:55 And he's a bit like no one in 19.
00:15:57 He's not.
00:15:58 He was good.
00:15:59 He was good.
00:16:00 He isn't good right now.
00:16:01 He just isn't.
00:16:02 And so, you know, it's just not it's one of those situations for the Patriots that I I
00:16:07 look at it and just think this guy's got to go.
00:16:09 You got to get this guy off your freaking team, man.
00:16:12 And you know, and he's causing dissension in the locker room.
00:16:14 And I that's the hard part for me.
00:16:18 And so.
00:16:19 I don't know.
00:16:21 So the hard the hard part, right, is that you start to look at it and you say, OK, who
00:16:27 can we you know, who can we keep around?
00:16:28 And, you know, people in the chat are talking about firing fire Bill O'Brien.
00:16:31 And look, I mean, I don't I don't disagree with that.
00:16:35 He's been he hasn't been good at the same time.
00:16:39 We're also talking about they have the number two pick in the draft right now.
00:16:43 If the season ended today.
00:16:45 Do you want to win?
00:16:47 Or do you not want to win?
00:16:49 You know, like I think that that's fans got to make up their mind here.
00:16:52 Like, do you want to win or not want to win?
00:16:53 We saw what the Panthers did today.
00:16:55 Panthers didn't win.
00:16:57 But they came off the close against the Bucks.
00:16:59 No, man, there's isn't great.
00:17:01 But like that Bucks team is pretty good.
00:17:03 Yeah.
00:17:04 Right.
00:17:05 And so the fact that they were able to to almost win that game, right, they had a fourth and
00:17:09 one that they wasn't able to complete the pass, but they were right in that game.
00:17:14 And so, you know, that's one of those things for me that I look at it and just say, like,
00:17:19 man, if you fire Bill O'Brien and now you get that interim bump.
00:17:24 I don't know.
00:17:25 I just I feel like that's not I don't want that.
00:17:27 I don't want to win.
00:17:28 I want to lose.
00:17:29 We're not we're not doing anything in season here.
00:17:31 You keep the staff now.
00:17:32 I think my concern with Bill O'Brien, like I I think he's much better than the offense
00:17:37 we've seen out there.
00:17:38 I think a lot of the issues we've seen with the offense out there is that the vision is
00:17:43 good and the players can't execute it.
00:17:46 And we've seen Bill O'Brien be a good enough teacher for a long time in this league and
00:17:49 in college.
00:17:51 He's been too good at for me to believe that he's the reason why guys aren't learning what's
00:17:55 going on here.
00:17:57 So that makes me think it's probably not all on him.
00:18:01 That said, we're looking at what's effectively the worst or the second worst offense in all
00:18:06 of football right now.
00:18:07 Yeah, it's hard to bring a guy like that back.
00:18:09 It's hard to bring a guy like that back if you're getting rid of the head coach.
00:18:13 And we're assuming it's going to be new quarterbacks, plural there next year.
00:18:17 But one of them is going to be a young guy.
00:18:20 Is he the guy to coach up a young quarterback in that position?
00:18:24 I can't say no, but I also don't feel confident about yes, right now.
00:18:28 I definitely don't feel confident about yes.
00:18:29 So if they move off of him and say we want somebody else, we're going to handpick somebody
00:18:33 for whoever the next quarterback is going to be.
00:18:35 I can't fault that approach.
00:18:37 Yeah, well, and that's and look, I mean, it's one of those funny situations, right?
00:18:41 Can we talk about when when you look at whether it's good or not, I was chatting about and
00:18:48 someone in the chat was saying kind of something similar.
00:18:50 I was talking to someone about the game about this.
00:18:53 The worst thing you can have is a good quarterback.
00:18:55 That's the worst thing you can have is a good quarterback.
00:18:57 You either want a great quarterback or you want a crap quarterback, because if you have
00:19:01 a good quarterback, you can kind of dance around that, you know, hey, we're almost in
00:19:08 the playoffs.
00:19:09 We're not quite in the board and we're close because, you know, you can compete with a
00:19:14 good quarterback.
00:19:16 The Giants are the perfect example of this.
00:19:18 There's the Giants.
00:19:19 They got a good quarterback in the Jones.
00:19:22 Is he great?
00:19:23 Absolutely not.
00:19:24 Is he terrible?
00:19:25 I would say he's not terrible.
00:19:26 He's good.
00:19:27 But they gave him this massive contract because you have to give him this massive contract.
00:19:33 You don't have a choice.
00:19:34 He's a starting quarterback.
00:19:36 He played well last year.
00:19:37 You got to give him the money.
00:19:40 And so and the Vikings with cousins, Matt, is a good example, too.
00:19:43 But like it's one of those situations where, hey, if everything works out perfectly, you
00:19:49 feel like things are OK.
00:19:51 If everything doesn't work out perfectly, you're in trouble.
00:19:54 And, you know, the Patriots now have two, three, four, however many you want, you know,
00:20:02 really crappy quarterbacks on the team.
00:20:04 And so, you know, nobody, nobody is now looking at it saying you have a good quarterback.
00:20:11 And Brandon's right.
00:20:12 Brandon is in the chat saying Jones is terrible and he's been awful this year.
00:20:15 But what did he do last year?
00:20:16 He looked pretty good last year.
00:20:18 Right.
00:20:19 And Matt Jones looked pretty good his rookie year.
00:20:20 If Matt Jones had played the way he plays rookie year the rest of the way through, we'd
00:20:25 be sitting here saying, what are you going to do?
00:20:26 You got to pay Matt Jones.
00:20:27 He keeps playing pretty well.
00:20:30 Now we know we know he's not that good.
00:20:33 We know he stinks.
00:20:34 So we don't have to worry about paying him.
00:20:36 You know, I think that that's that's a silver lining here is that we're not sitting in this
00:20:41 eight to nine range right in the seven and ten range.
00:20:45 Like we're sitting here saying this team stinks.
00:20:49 We need a hard reset, probably going to get rid of the whole coaching staff, you know,
00:20:54 and you need basically a whole new offense.
00:20:56 The defense, I think, you know, a few pieces here and there, but you basically need a whole
00:20:59 new offense.
00:21:01 And you know, luckily for the Patriots, I think that now we're gonna be driving the
00:21:07 top of the draft because of it.
00:21:08 Yeah.
00:21:09 And now you got a chance to go fix your offense here with one pick in theory, and that's probably
00:21:16 overstating it a little bit here.
00:21:18 But right now, you can could be that if you if you go from awful to average at a position
00:21:26 that can do wonders for you.
00:21:29 And if they get a quarterback who is just average as a rookie, I mean, this offense
00:21:33 goes probably from bottom to bottom three in the NFL to bottom 12, which I'll take right
00:21:41 now and bottom 12 with this defense and you're winning six or seven games and you can feel
00:21:47 good about the direction you're going and then you see if you can build off of it.
00:21:50 And you know, it's the Cardinals winning today with Patriots loss.
00:21:54 I mean, it's Thursday is a winnable game because it's going to be Mitch Trubisky.
00:21:59 But I also don't think so without Steelers defense.
00:22:02 I think this offense might somehow score negative points.
00:22:04 Like, I don't know what's going to happen.
00:22:07 Denver looks good enough right now.
00:22:10 Obviously, Kansas City, like I don't I think Kansas City, I think the Kansas City game
00:22:14 is going to be closer than people expect because they always dial up good game plans for Patrick
00:22:18 Mahomes.
00:22:19 Yeah.
00:22:20 And the chiefs, frankly, their offense hasn't been that great lately, but the defense is
00:22:25 really good now in Kansas City.
00:22:27 And that's going to be really tough for them.
00:22:29 They're not going to score much and they're not going to beat the Bills again.
00:22:33 And then it's just that Jets game.
00:22:35 That's the only game I think you're worried about them winning.
00:22:37 And now with the Cardinals win, Patriots can win one game and comfortably have a top two
00:22:43 pick in this draft.
00:22:44 So they are locked into having either the number two quarterback or Marvin Harrison,
00:22:50 Jr. here at worst, depending on what they want to do or a lucrative trade back.
00:22:55 That's a decent spot to be.
00:22:57 And I know the offense is really bad right now.
00:22:59 I think the offensive line looked rough at times today.
00:23:01 They were able to run block well.
00:23:04 And I'm going to discount some of the Trent Brown stuff today because he looks so hurt
00:23:08 trying to move out there.
00:23:10 I think you could bring back this line and feel somewhat comfortable with it, at least
00:23:14 as a step in a progression.
00:23:16 You're not the line you're putting out there next year isn't the one you want to win the
00:23:19 Super Bowl with, but it's good enough to put a quarterback, a rookie quarterback behind
00:23:24 with a little bit more investment into the depth this off season.
00:23:28 Yeah.
00:23:29 So then you're just hitting quarterback and receivers and you hit on if you can hit on
00:23:33 both whatever it is trying to do, you hit on both of this thing gets jumpstarted and
00:23:37 you get going in a hurry.
00:23:38 Right.
00:23:39 But I think too, like when you, when you look at what the Patriots have offensively,
00:23:45 right.
00:23:46 I look, Bailey's happy.
00:23:48 I know there was happy fans out there that love Bailey's happy and think that he's the
00:23:52 next guy and he's the savior and he's the, he's not, he's not, I'm sorry.
00:23:56 He's not like really bad.
00:23:57 I mean, today I'm telling you that first, the first, that first round, first round,
00:24:05 the first quarter drive, there was one play where he had, um, he had Hunter Henry's rolled
00:24:14 up to his right.
00:24:15 Hunter Henry was just right in front of him.
00:24:17 Henry was standing in front of running across the field.
00:24:20 The Henry's running across the field this way and Zappi's running with them and he's
00:24:24 just sitting there and I'm like, would you throw the ball to Hunter Henry, please?
00:24:28 And then he finally saw him and throw behind him.
00:24:30 And I'm like, what are you doing?
00:24:32 And on the next play, again, he's kind of moving around in the pocket.
00:24:36 He's got Juju open and he throws it on the ground next to Juju.
00:24:40 And I'm like, what the hell was that?
00:24:42 And look, I'll tell you, we've seen all sorts of crap from this year.
00:24:49 Mack Jones isn't the answer either.
00:24:51 Right.
00:24:52 But I'm looking, I'm watching this game saying, well, neither is frigging Bailey's happy.
00:24:56 Like what is going on here?
00:24:57 You know?
00:24:58 And so it's, yeah.
00:24:59 Like we're the boats halfway in the water right now.
00:25:06 The arrangement of the deck chairs doesn't matter.
00:25:08 We're going down either way.
00:25:10 Like it's, we're more than halfway underwater at this point.
00:25:13 Like it's, we're on the stern that's just barely sticking out of the water right now.
00:25:18 That's, that's where we're at.
00:25:19 And we can, if you want to, if we want to change quarterbacks, we can change quarterbacks.
00:25:21 Why not?
00:25:22 We can keep moving around.
00:25:23 You know, it's just swap, throw a new quarterback in there every time somebody throws a pick,
00:25:28 we could do that.
00:25:29 Why not?
00:25:30 But it's not, it's not going to make a difference.
00:25:32 And you get to this point too.
00:25:34 I know people have voiced complaints with how Bill Belichick has handled this.
00:25:39 When you have three, four bad quarterbacks on a roster, there's no good way to handle
00:25:43 it.
00:25:44 There's no way it's going to look good.
00:25:45 There's no way it's going to work.
00:25:46 The problem is that you got three or four bad quarterbacks on the roster.
00:25:49 That's you solve the appearance issue by solving the fact that you just need better players
00:25:53 there.
00:25:54 Right.
00:25:55 Also, I just want to address this real quick, because I've seen a lot of complaints about
00:25:58 Bill talking to the press after the game today and the answer, the answers he was giving.
00:26:03 I honestly liked the answer he gave.
00:26:06 Belichick never throws players under the bus.
00:26:08 He doesn't give specific scheme things.
00:26:12 It's just a longstanding policy of his that he's basically, he's never going to give answers
00:26:16 that are going to possibly put his players in a worse position, either with the media
00:26:20 or with opponents, anything like that.
00:26:22 And he's talking to it and you're not, you can love him or hate him for it, but he's
00:26:27 been the same guy for 30 years and don't change up on him now.
00:26:31 Like, yeah, it's this is who he is.
00:26:34 He's not going to tell you the exact specific reasons behind every decision they make.
00:26:38 It's they didn't do it before.
00:26:40 We all, we all loved the we're on to Cincinnati stuff when that happened and he refused to
00:26:44 give answers when they're questioning Brady.
00:26:46 You can't, you know, go the other way when there's no big, right.
00:26:49 Yeah.
00:26:50 Well, that's really what it comes down to.
00:26:51 Yeah.
00:26:52 And yeah.
00:26:53 And Bill deserves criticism for what's going on with this team.
00:26:54 There's no doubt about that.
00:26:55 And I mean, this is the media stuff.
00:26:57 It's Bill being Bill.
00:26:58 And I, it feels a lot like select people in the press being upset that Bill has, you know,
00:27:05 done this for years and finally being able to play the aha, gotcha card or whatever and
00:27:12 get back at him.
00:27:13 That's what it is.
00:27:14 They're pissed at him.
00:27:15 They've been pissed at him for years.
00:27:16 They want answers.
00:27:18 He doesn't give, he doesn't give sound bites.
00:27:21 He doesn't.
00:27:22 And they hate him for it.
00:27:24 They've always hated him for it.
00:27:26 And so you just like, okay, like fine.
00:27:28 You can hate him for that.
00:27:29 But it's just, it's one of those things, man.
00:27:31 I, I, uh, I don't know.
00:27:32 Oh God, y'all said something about Thornton.
00:27:33 I didn't know.
00:27:34 I didn't hear that.
00:27:35 Um, he didn't, I don't think it was Thornton specifically, but he did kind of voice issues
00:27:43 with the offense.
00:27:44 Yeah.
00:27:45 I can't catch the ball.
00:27:46 Which is that, what did I, I think it was on, on here last week at some point where
00:27:50 I said something about how I'd be okay with them winning games if it's because the young
00:27:54 offensive player showed up and that's why they were doing it.
00:27:57 Right.
00:27:58 Well, I mean, that's right.
00:28:01 Like there was your opportunity right there and he just, I could have won them the game
00:28:05 that would, I mean that legitimately could have been, they could, I could have turned
00:28:08 into a touchdown drive and that would have been the game and instead go and credit credit
00:28:13 to Bailey's Abby too, for he was asked about it and he took the blame for it, even though
00:28:18 it wasn't on him.
00:28:19 Um, and I will, you know, we, I'll credit both, both of the, the main quarterbacks there
00:28:24 in Zappy and Mac Jones and that they seem to be handling this very professionally with
00:28:29 the press and yeah, that's, that's one thing I didn't like in this, but by all accounts,
00:28:34 Mac has been handling the situation very well behind closed doors and with Zappy and he's
00:28:38 being a good teammate, he's being encouraging and you got people on Twitter out there posting
00:28:42 the one picture of him where he's got his head down in between sets or whatever, throwing
00:28:45 the football.
00:28:46 It's like, all right, you're just, you're trashing the dude when he's down.
00:28:50 There's no, there's no need for that.
00:28:51 Right.
00:28:52 Yeah.
00:28:53 It just, you know, it's, it's, that's difficult.
00:28:56 Right.
00:28:57 And so, but again, I mean the offense is such a disaster right now, like such a disaster
00:29:02 right now that I just like, it's, it's rough.
00:29:08 Right.
00:29:09 And it's, look, I mean if Devante Parker doesn't land on top of a defender, they might win
00:29:14 the game.
00:29:15 So it's like, that was a nice catch by Parker.
00:29:17 It was a nice throw by Zappy, you know, and Parker just unfortunately landed on top of
00:29:22 the defender and didn't land on the ground.
00:29:24 If he had landed on the ground, he would have landed on the ground in bounds, but because
00:29:27 he landed on the defender, he wasn't technically down.
00:29:30 And so his feet land out of bounds and that's the end of that, you know?
00:29:33 I don't think he would have been, I think his, his foot went out of bounds before it
00:29:36 landed on the guy.
00:29:38 So maybe you're right.
00:29:39 So maybe that, so maybe he would have been out of bounds no matter what, but it was close.
00:29:42 At least, at least his quarterback can put it where only he can catch it though.
00:29:45 That's a nice thing.
00:29:46 That's a great point.
00:29:47 So I just can't, I can't with the freaking guys.
00:29:50 All right, let's take a break because we're running behind on the break.
00:29:53 Let's take a break and then, and then we'll just, we'll finish up here.
00:29:56 I mean, there's a lot we can talk about, but, but let's just, let's, let's, we'll finish
00:30:01 up here.

00:31:13 All right.
00:31:19 So all right.
00:31:20 Patriots lost again today.
00:31:22 So now the two and 10 Cardinals won.
00:31:25 Right.
00:31:26 So now they have three wins, which is real nice.
00:31:29 So that's good for the Patriots.
00:31:31 So now you say, OK, we're moving forward from the Cardinals.
00:31:33 I think the Cardinals have their bye next week.
00:31:35 Right.
00:31:36 So the Cardinals have their bye next week.
00:31:37 I mean, it's gotta be.
00:31:38 I don't think you have any buys later.
00:31:39 Yeah, I'm pretty sure they have week 14.
00:31:40 I have James Conner.
00:31:41 I think I kind of think it's weird to even have buys this late in the season.
00:31:45 You shouldn't have you shouldn't have buys after Thanksgiving.
00:31:49 That should be like, yeah, they should all be in October, November and you just fit it
00:31:54 in then.
00:31:55 Yeah.
00:31:56 So we'll see.
00:31:57 But either way, if Carolina so Carolina's strength of schedule is actually better than
00:32:02 the Patriots right now, which is kind of crazy to think about.
00:32:05 But.
00:32:06 Their strength schedules better than the Patriots right now.
00:32:09 So if the Patriots were to lose out and the Panthers were to win one game.
00:32:15 Just one.
00:32:16 They got the Falcons still, they got the Bucs again, right.
00:32:20 They got the Saints with James Winston next week because it looks like Carr's going to
00:32:24 be out for a few weeks.
00:32:26 So in that situation, if they win a game, Patriots get the number one pick.
00:32:32 You know, if Carolina can't win a game, then Patriots get the number two pick and then
00:32:38 the Bears end up with the number one pick.
00:32:40 Right.
00:32:41 Which is wild.
00:32:42 The Bears end up with the number one pick.
00:32:43 But you got to assume that the Bears are going to be drafting.
00:32:47 That the Bears are going to be drafting what's it called?
00:32:49 Oh, you think the Bears are going to be drafting a quarterback, you know, and you have to believe
00:32:56 in Justin Fields enough.
00:32:58 I don't in my opinion, they're dumb enough to do it.
00:33:00 Well, I mean, and the other thing is if they're going to keep Fields, especially with where
00:33:05 they're picking, I wouldn't be shocked if they trade out of the number one pick there
00:33:11 for a team that does want a quarterback to win that.
00:33:15 That's the whole issue here for the Patriots.
00:33:17 I've seen somebody mentioned, hey, like the Patriots are at three.
00:33:19 The Cardinals aren't going to want a quarterback, so it's not going to matter.
00:33:22 Yes, but the Cardinals might trade with somebody who wants a quarterback and you get jumped
00:33:28 or you're in the Bears Trubisky position where you're at three and you got to give up a real
00:33:33 draft capital to move up one spot to pick a quarterback because they're putting it up
00:33:38 for sales.
00:33:39 So, you know, being able to control that your destiny for that pick is nice and our real
00:33:43 shot at the number one overall pick for going down.
00:33:46 Let's go all the way down.
00:33:47 That's the way I feel about it.
00:33:48 And honestly, it's one of those things where like it's the best, it'd be the best thing.
00:33:53 And you look at, look at the Colts and obviously the Colts aren't on what you're, you know,
00:33:58 what you want to pace your franchise off of, but look at the Colts and nothing ended up
00:34:02 happening with it because they didn't have the right guy.
00:34:04 In my opinion, they never really had the right guy at head coach, but you know, they sucked
00:34:10 that one year when Peyton Manning got hurt and to get them to more picnic, Andrew Luckin,
00:34:16 and they were never able to, to protect Andrew Luck the way they should have.
00:34:20 They were never able to build pieces around him enough to help him out significantly.
00:34:27 But you got Andrew Luck in the building, right?
00:34:29 They were in the AFC championship in year three of Andrew Luck.
00:34:33 Right.
00:34:34 And so if the Patriots can get a situation where now, in my opinion, in my opinion, I
00:34:42 believe that Caleb Williams is the number one pick.
00:34:46 That's just my opinion.
00:34:47 I don't, some people like Drake May.
00:34:49 I like Caleb.
00:34:50 He's my number one guy.
00:34:51 In fact, I'm trying to, I thought maybe we can try to get a hashtag scrub for Caleb.
00:34:56 I don't know if that really works.
00:34:58 It doesn't really roll off the tongue, but like suck for luck scrub for Caleb.
00:35:02 I don't, it doesn't really work that well, but you know, whatever.
00:35:04 So either way, I think that, you know, it's one of those things where you got to get that
00:35:12 guy in the building.
00:35:13 You got to, you got to get in the building.
00:35:14 Now, if the Patriots have the number two or number three pick, I don't know.
00:35:20 We'll see.
00:35:21 I'm not sure, you know, what, what you can do.
00:35:26 I like Marvin Harrison jr.
00:35:27 I like the idea of what if you're three and the bears are four, what if the bears will
00:35:32 move up one pick the take Marvin Harrison jr.
00:35:35 And you can take, you know, Carolina's second round pick next year.
00:35:39 Yeah.
00:35:40 Right.
00:35:41 And Carolina's second round pick next year is gonna be a high pick to move back one spot,
00:35:46 you know, and instead of taking Marvin Harrison jr.
00:35:49 You take whatever someone else.
00:35:50 I don't know, you know, like whatever the case may be.
00:35:52 But the biggest thing for me is that it's just going to depend on the, and like you
00:35:59 mentioned this before, if you want the number one pick, you have to lose out.
00:36:03 But if Carolina is not going to win another game, it doesn't matter.
00:36:08 You can win a game still and still get the number two overall pick.
00:36:12 Right.
00:36:13 And so that's, that's important for the Patriots, right?
00:36:17 That's important for the Patriots to look at and say, okay, we can still win a game
00:36:20 and still be at number two.
00:36:22 Now, if you win a game, if you win next week in Pittsburgh against Mr. Biscay, and then
00:36:28 Carolina ends up winning another game, they like, oh crap, we could have got, could have
00:36:31 gotten the number one pick and it sucks.
00:36:33 Right.
00:36:34 But like, you know, it is what it is.
00:36:36 What are you going to do?
00:36:37 You know, there's nothing you can do about that.
00:36:38 And so, uh,
00:36:39 And the guys are going to keep, I mean, these, all these players are fighting for their jobs
00:36:42 and you know, it's, if there was one reason to bring Bill Belichick back as head coach,
00:36:47 I'd argue it's the way he's kept the locker room together too, because outside of a couple
00:36:51 guys on the offense, giving quotes to the media, by and large, it's been a very tight
00:36:55 ship despite how badly they're losing.
00:36:58 You've got guys still fully bought in to what's going on with the way they're playing out
00:37:02 there, which is incredibly impressive.
00:37:03 Um, and it's funny too, because you know, you think everybody makes Bill out to be this
00:37:09 difficult coach who nobody wants to play for.
00:37:11 And that's not what you see out there.
00:37:12 This isn't an effort thing.
00:37:13 These guys just aren't good.
00:37:14 Yeah.
00:37:15 And the two players that they thought were good on the offensive side of the ball are
00:37:19 either hurt or not nearly as good.
00:37:21 And they missed on the evaluations.
00:37:23 Uh, I think that's kind of what it's come down to.
00:37:26 And then yeah, at the end of the, I think in the draft, they probably do end up with
00:37:30 that number two pick.
00:37:31 Just if Carolina is winning a game, I do think the Patriots are also going to be winning
00:37:35 a game because that Carolina team is awful.
00:37:38 Yeah.
00:37:39 Um, I love it.
00:37:40 Of course.
00:37:41 Yeah.
00:37:42 Yeah.
00:37:43 I mean, that offense, that offense here might actually win a few games.
00:37:48 Yes, but, um, I'd love it for them to win, but if we end up with the number two pick,
00:37:53 it's basically going to come down to how comfortable is whoever's making the call in April with
00:37:59 whoever the number two quarterback on the board is.
00:38:01 Right.
00:38:02 And that's, it's a big question because sometimes teams love that guy and sometimes they get
00:38:06 a little bit picky and they don't love them.
00:38:08 Some, or it's, it's also about who the number two quarterback is.
00:38:11 And then we do that Drake and they Caleb Williams thing.
00:38:13 Do they think Jaden Daniels is in that conversation?
00:38:16 That's something that started to come up about Daniels being a high first round pick now,
00:38:20 and we'll see how much steam that actually gets here.
00:38:22 But yeah.
00:38:23 And the other thing I'll tell you too, if they, if they opt for a trade back or Marvin,
00:38:27 Marvin Harrison jr or whatever, you watch that Pac 12 championship game Friday night,
00:38:32 both of the quarterbacks on that field are better than anybody on the Patriots roster.
00:38:35 I don't know if they're good.
00:38:36 None of they may be bottom tier NFL quarterbacks and they are actually better than the guys
00:38:41 the Patriots are putting out there.
00:38:43 And it's also funny if you go back and look at Michael Penix and Bo Nix's like histories,
00:38:49 pretty sure Nix started like his first year starting at Auburn was Mack Jones's first
00:38:55 year starting at Alabama.
00:38:57 I'm yeah, I'm pretty sure it was something like that.
00:39:00 So older quarterbacks, but guys who have the basics down and who can make all the throws
00:39:07 and you feel confident about them being at least a high level backup caliber guy.
00:39:11 I think that that's your worst case.
00:39:13 Now your worst case, your worst case with any quarterback is that they can't play and
00:39:16 they bought them out of the league.
00:39:18 So there is no, there's no floor, but right.
00:39:21 And I think, I think the big thing is if you're sitting at two and Caleb Williams is your
00:39:25 guy, he's your number one guy.
00:39:27 He's the quarterback that you're like, okay, he's a, he's a franchise altering player.
00:39:34 So two things, right?
00:39:37 Two things you, they can do one of two things.
00:39:40 They can try to trade up for the number one pick, which I don't love.
00:39:45 It just really depends on what the bears are willing to give up.
00:39:48 Well, and it also, if the bears, if you and the bears both want the same quarterback,
00:39:54 the price to move up, it's going to be way too, it'll be prohibitive.
00:39:58 Yeah.
00:39:59 You're going to have to give up like three first round picks to move up a spot, which
00:40:02 is just not worth it.
00:40:04 Of course.
00:40:05 Right.
00:40:06 It just all, it just depends.
00:40:07 Right.
00:40:08 So just, just to give an idea, cause TJ asked a question about what does it typically cost
00:40:11 to move up from the first pick to the second pick.
00:40:13 If you go to the Rich Hill draft chart and again, the ritual draft chart, I mean, we're
00:40:19 a little biased because we're shows on this network, but, but the ritual draft chart is,
00:40:24 is really kind of what you're looking at, right?
00:40:28 It's one of those things that, Hey, all right, let's see what the value chart is.
00:40:31 Just so we have an idea.
00:40:32 The number one pick is a thousand points.
00:40:35 The number two pick is 717 points.
00:40:39 The number 33 pick is 180 points.
00:40:43 So you're talking about the difference in value and the difference of value is roughly
00:40:50 the 18th pick in the draft 17th or 18th pick in the draft.
00:40:54 So you're talking about two first round picks to move up from two to one.
00:40:59 And you can pretty much always guarantee that when there was a QB trade in the top five,
00:41:04 top 10 of the draft, you can just go ahead and add like another first round pick in value
00:41:08 on top of that.
00:41:09 That's, and I love Rich Hill and his draft value chart, but also the values kind of break
00:41:13 down at the top because of course, because when it's the top of the draft, you're not
00:41:17 trading for a draft pick, you're trading for a prospect and it's all about the value of
00:41:21 that prospect.
00:41:22 That's why, you know, if you're trading for a defensive end at the top, you're not going
00:41:25 to, it's not going to be as expensive as if you're trading for a quarterback at the top.
00:41:29 So yeah, moving from two to one there I think would be incredibly difficult and not worth
00:41:36 it for this team.
00:41:37 So you know, it's going to be number two and how they feel about that guy.
00:41:43 And you know, the thing that you have on your side here as a Patriots fan is it's the Bears
00:41:47 picking ahead of you and man, oh man, they usually mess it up when they're picking a
00:41:53 quarterback.
00:41:54 So if you pick, if it's a pick between two quarterbacks and you get to pick the one the
00:41:58 Bears like or the one the Bears don't like, you can make a lot of money going with the
00:42:01 one the Bears don't like.
00:42:02 So that's a good spot to be in.
00:42:04 Great point.
00:42:05 Now it might be a new regime, but still it was an old regime that drafted Drew Besky
00:42:09 too.
00:42:10 Mike, Mike Lather mentions talking about the 18 free agents set to leave the Patriots
00:42:14 and that's a conversation we have to have.
00:42:16 Of course, someone mentioned Jim Harbaugh.
00:42:19 Do not under any circumstances, do not let Jim Harbaugh anywhere near this goddamn franchise.
00:42:29 Hey, shout out to number one, Michigan though.
00:42:32 I don't want him anywhere near this franchise, nowhere.
00:42:37 And so, and then someone asked about what can we get for Bill Belichick?
00:42:41 If Bill Belichick is going to move on, right?
00:42:44 If Bill Belichick moves on and goes somewhere else, I'd be surprised if you didn't get at
00:42:51 least a second round pick from him, if not a first round pick.
00:42:57 And I think, you know, a first round pick, you're talking about a mid-level first round
00:43:01 pick.
00:43:02 Let's just say he went to somewhere like LA, but you're probably not getting, you're probably
00:43:08 not getting a first round pick from them this year, but maybe a 2025.
00:43:13 My thought is a 2025 first round pick because give them a year, get a little bit better
00:43:18 and then go from there.
00:43:19 You know?
00:43:20 And so, and that's kind of the situation that I think you're in and that helps.
00:43:25 It's going to help you in the long run.
00:43:27 When you look at the Sean Payton trade that just happened, I think as kind of a rubric
00:43:31 for it, the only difference is the Sean Payton trade.
00:43:33 I think Denver really wanted Payton and they were kind of in a spot where they were held
00:43:38 over a barrel for it.
00:43:40 That's not going to be the case here with Bill's.
00:43:41 You're going to get less, but the Sean Payton trade was a first and a second for Sean Payton
00:43:46 and a third round pick.
00:43:48 So they did send that back and I wouldn't be surprised if it's just like a second round
00:43:55 pick for Bill.
00:43:56 That wouldn't shock me or like a conditional thing.
00:43:59 It's like a second that converts to a first if, you know, they make the playoffs in his
00:44:04 first year type of thing.
00:44:05 Right.
00:44:06 And D.A.'s mentioning, you know, Harbaugh's record in the NFL.
00:44:09 He's right.
00:44:10 You're right.
00:44:11 Harbaugh's record in the NFL was great.
00:44:12 I don't care.
00:44:13 I don't care.
00:44:14 The guy's an asshole.
00:44:15 He's an asshole.
00:44:16 I don't want him to be.
00:44:17 He is.
00:44:18 You know, the one, the one positive with Jim Harbaugh that he has been, actually I'm going
00:44:21 to say two things here.
00:44:23 One, he, he's been very good at developing quarterbacks.
00:44:27 That's been a strength of his there.
00:44:29 Yeah.
00:44:30 And the second, he has managed an offense, which I think is what they've been trying
00:44:35 to do in New England, which is mixing the like spread offense in the passing game with
00:44:42 the power running game.
00:44:44 And there's, you know, it's not the same as the Lions.
00:44:46 It looks very different and they use different personnel, but there's some, I think similarities
00:44:52 between what the Patriots have wanted to do and what's been done at Michigan.
00:44:56 So I think there could be a personnel fit.
00:44:58 I'll also add the third thing.
00:45:00 He's been a very good CEO type there.
00:45:03 That's what you're looking for.
00:45:04 He's consistently outside of, you know, certain hires.
00:45:07 He's consistently surrounded himself with very competent people.
00:45:10 People were very good at what they do.
00:45:12 And you know, the, one of the hot guys on the market, this off season is going to be
00:45:17 Mike McDonald, defensive coordinator in Baltimore.
00:45:20 That's a Jim Harbaugh guy who was there at Michigan.
00:45:24 So I think there's questions around Jim Harbaugh and I'm not entirely sold on it and questions
00:45:28 around him, you know, translating to the NFL.
00:45:31 It's also, you know, he's, he's not the youngest guy anymore, so you don't know how long he'd
00:45:35 be around, but I think you could do a lot worse.
00:45:39 No, listen, you're not, you're not wrong about that.
00:45:42 You're not wrong about that.
00:45:43 And I do think, look, I just, I personally don't like Jim Harbaugh.
00:45:46 And so I don't want to see him here because I don't like the guy.
00:45:49 Maybe that's unfair, but that's how I feel.
00:45:51 He's a strange human being.
00:45:54 He's a weird dude.
00:45:56 But you know, and it's, I also think I want, I want a young guy that's going to bring us
00:46:02 into the 21st century.
00:46:03 That's what I want.
00:46:04 I want young guys can bring us into the 21st century.
00:46:06 Do I think Rob Mayo is going to do that?
00:46:07 Not necessarily.
00:46:08 Do I also think that we need like something different?
00:46:14 I think, I think we need something different, right?
00:46:16 Like we need a new, I just, I feel like we have to almost clean house and get rid of
00:46:22 all the coaches.
00:46:23 Maybe if you can stay like, you know, you want, uh, what's his name to stay on the offensive
00:46:28 line.
00:46:29 That's fine.
00:46:30 Mike Pellegrino, I think, uh, Adrian Clem is who I'm thinking of.
00:46:32 Of course, Adrian Clem hasn't been around, but you know, cause he's been, he's been sick,
00:46:36 but like, if you want Adrian Cullen, Billy Yates to stay on the offensive line, I think
00:46:39 they've been okay at the offensive line.
00:46:42 I think Mike Pellegrino has done a really nice job with the corners.
00:46:44 So like if you, you know, if you want some guys stick around, sure.
00:46:49 But I think a lot of those guys are going to have to go and, um, we'll see.
00:46:55 I just, I don't know if I want, I don't know if I want a Bill Belichick disciple as the
00:47:03 next head coach, because I just feel like you're getting more of the same, right?
00:47:06 Whereas I want, I want to move into the 21st century and listen, if, if Drodd Mayo was
00:47:11 sitting here saying, Hey, I love Bill, love, love Bill, we're moving on.
00:47:15 We're not, this is not no longer the Patriot way.
00:47:18 This is no longer this.
00:47:19 I have my own ideas about how I think things should be done.
00:47:22 Um, and he, he wants to do them that way that I don't necessarily hate it.
00:47:26 It's just, you know, that that's the biggest thing that I want to, um, that I, you know,
00:47:31 that I want to do.
00:47:32 Well, and it's tough right now cause it's, it's also tough to evaluate some of the current
00:47:37 offensive coaches and like the strategy there because whoever they put in a quarterback
00:47:42 can't execute the strategy.
00:47:44 I mean, you can't, how are you supposed to tell how good the ideas are if we only ever
00:47:48 get to see what the ideas are when they're on the field being executed poorly.
00:47:52 Right.
00:47:53 Um, so it's, it makes it tough.
00:47:56 That's that's why like I actually really liked the philosophy behind what the Patriots were
00:48:00 doing.
00:48:01 I just think they messed up really badly in evaluating the players to go into it.
00:48:05 Yeah.
00:48:06 But you know, it's tough.
00:48:07 It's, we can't really tell because you know, the players are so bad that it's hard to actually,
00:48:12 you know, get an idea on what they wanted to do and how they want to do it.
00:48:15 Like it's, and you could see that with the quarterback play.
00:48:18 It's just, they don't know what they're doing out there.
00:48:20 Bailey's Zampi was late on like every single throw he was trying to make without outside
00:48:24 of like two or three of them.
00:48:25 And one of them was, one of them was that drop by type one Thornton.
00:48:29 So it's just, well, I mean, look, this is the, this has just been, it's been the same
00:48:34 story over and over again.
00:48:35 Right.
00:48:36 It's been the same story over and over again.
00:48:37 Divide the Parker, you know, Matt Jones hit him early.
00:48:41 He could catch it right in the hands, you know, in Vegas and he dropped it and the one
00:48:46 day Parker, I mean, not the one debugger now take on Thornton today.
00:48:48 And it's just, it's happened over and over and over again.
00:48:51 Even, you know, you go back to go back to the Philly game and the first game of the
00:48:54 season, you know, where Kendrick born on third and 12, you know, he makes, makes the play
00:49:00 and he doesn't.
00:49:02 Right.
00:49:03 And he makes a great throw and you know, born drops it and, and, you know, they lose
00:49:08 on the next play.
00:49:09 So it just becomes, it becomes some of those things, you know, when I see people in the
00:49:13 chat talking about Brady or Peyton Manning or someone like that, those guys you need,
00:49:19 if you're going to be an NFL executive, you're, you're an NFL lifer, your lifer, that's, that's
00:49:25 it.
00:49:26 You're in, you're there.
00:49:27 Right.
00:49:28 So these guys work nonstop, nonstop.
00:49:34 So I just, you know, I don't know.
00:49:37 I'm not, I don't think pretty would be a good coach anyway.
00:49:40 And I think he's kind of admitted that.
00:49:41 Yeah.
00:49:42 Well, that's, I mean, when you're, that's, this is the issue too, with guys who were
00:49:46 that good, they don't understand how to teach other people the sport because it's come so
00:49:51 naturally to them and obviously not taking away anything from Tom Brady's work ethic
00:49:56 because that's also outstanding, but you don't get to where he was.
00:50:00 If you don't have a really intuitive understanding of what's going on out there and you're not
00:50:03 like, well, you see a lot of like backup quarterbacks become good coach, Kevin O'Connell in Minnesota,
00:50:09 who's done a really good job out there this season, back up in New England, journeyman
00:50:13 type guy who had to do that.
00:50:16 So now it's, I don't hate the idea of Mayo as head coach either.
00:50:21 I just, I think whatever you do going forward, you have to have a vision and you got to like
00:50:28 stay to it.
00:50:30 You got to, whatever craft is doing, you got to lean into something all the way.
00:50:33 Don't have to do something, committing behind whatever you're doing.
00:50:37 And if it misses, it misses.
00:50:39 But I think, you know, you got to, you got enough talent on this team that you go all
00:50:43 in on trying to build up this offense as fast as you can and you see what can happen.
00:50:48 And if it falls flat, it falls flat in your back where you are right now.
00:50:50 It's not like it's going to be a big deal.
00:50:51 It's not going to be a big deal.
00:50:52 It's not going to be a big deal.
