00:00:00Our thoughts and prayers today are with so many people that we lost, so many people that are
00:00:08missing, so many families that have been affected by this attack on America, attack on New York.
00:00:15In particular, we pray for and we remember the police officers and the firefighters and the
00:00:21EMTs, the health care workers who sacrificed their lives to save over 25,000 people.
00:00:30So all of us today remember them and pray for them and dedicate ourselves to them to make certain
00:00:36that we prevail and we will. It's time though, as the President has said, as Governor Pataki
00:00:41has said, and I join with him, it's time for Americans to go about their lives undaunted,
00:00:47without fear, to show the people who attacked us that they can't stop America. They can't stop
00:00:53America from going forward. They can't stop America from prevailing. It's time for us to
00:00:58get back to playing football and playing baseball and going to school and going to the movies and
00:01:03going to plays and creating and doing the things that make America the greatest country in the
00:01:08world. So I'm very, very, very, very happy today that the NFL has gone forward with their schedule
00:01:14and we're going to play football again and we're going to show people that America just moves
00:01:18ahead and we're undaunted and we're not at all fearful. Thank you and God bless America.
00:01:24Oh beautiful, for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, for purple mountain majesty,
00:01:53for the land of the free and the home of the brave, America, my sweet America,
00:02:08for the land of the free and the home of the brave,
00:02:32from sea to shining sea,
00:02:42shining sea.
00:02:52Now ladies and gentlemen, please join together in a moment of silence for the victims of September 11.
00:03:23Thank you. Your attention is directed
00:03:28to the field where a color guard from Otis Air National Guard
00:03:33is joined by Massachusetts State Trooper Dan Clark for our national anthem.
00:03:40Ladies and gentlemen, imagine if you will that the year is 1814 and this nation is at war.
00:03:54You are on board a ship sailing towards the enemy, that same enemy that just burnt your nation's
00:04:00capital to the ground. Your mission is to win the release of a prisoner of war, a respected
00:04:05physician, and your friend. You board the British flagship and after intense negotiations they agree
00:04:11to release your friend. However, you all remain captive because of the battle that is about to
00:04:16take place. On the morning of 13 September 1814, the British fleet begin a bombardment against
00:04:22your homeland, the likes of which have never been seen before. Rocket after rocket, cannonball
00:04:28after cannonball, for 25 hours they pound on, but through the night you're able to look towards the
00:04:34shore and you can still see the stars and stripes flying in the breeze. And in the morning,
00:04:41the bombardment ends and there is silence. And as the sun comes up over the horizon,
00:04:48you are able to look toward the shore and you can see that the troops of Fort McHenry have raised
00:04:54an American flag that is so large and so grand that each of its 15 stars and stripes measure
00:05:01two feet across. A flag that is so magnificent it cries out, this is the United States of America
00:05:08and we will never surrender. You are so moved by this show of gut and resolve, you write the
00:05:16following song. Your name, Francis Scott Key. Ladies and gentlemen, this is your national anthem.
00:05:24Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light, what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
00:05:49Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, o'er the ramparts we watched
00:06:01were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
00:06:12gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
00:06:31o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
00:06:50These have been stirring times. And shortly, the ceremonial coin toss that will feature the
00:07:06Andrewsies from Staten Island, New York. Joe, number 63, the starting right guard for New
00:07:11England, his father, a retired New York City police officer, three brothers, all three New York
00:07:16firefighters who are at ground zero from day one and continue to inspire us like their brothers.
00:07:22We'll be back with the opening kickoff.
00:07:29And welcome back to Foxboro. Fans here echoing the spirit on this NFL Sunday,
00:07:34respecting football for its players while honoring our real heroes, the firefighters and police.
00:07:41Biggest cheers of this pregame were for the men and women in uniform.
00:07:47It's been a moving tribute thus far, and it continues here as Joe Ambrose, his father,
00:07:52as we said, a New York City policeman, and the three brothers all from Staten Island, New York,
00:07:58who are firefighters, were there in the opening moments of that catastrophic day Tuesday in New
00:08:04York City. Ambrose trying to hold his motions together for these last 12 days of all the
00:08:11Patriots. He has felt the deepest of all.
00:08:32It really has been a time for all of us to examine ourselves, hasn't it, and
00:08:36how we relate to others. And if there is one goodness out of this gross tragedy is the fact
00:08:45that fellow man feels, has empathy for one another, and it goes right down to the core
00:08:51of these players themselves. They represent not only the New York City, but also the New
00:09:02England Patriots and all of America today. Let's join them again for their heroism
00:09:08and give them another hand.
00:09:10It was owner Bob Kraft's idea, the owner of the New England Patriots, to include the four other Ambroses today.
00:09:41The Jets have won the coin toss. And the Jets win the opening toss, and the men who have
00:09:49been so close to that ground zero, and who threatened not to play, had the NFL
00:09:56decided to continue the schedule last Sunday, they said they would not have played. They would
00:10:00have taken a forfeit. And hello everyone, and welcome back to the continuation of the National
00:10:10Football League season. And as a former player, you can feel most of all how difficult it's been
00:10:15for these men, these American men, as players to come back and play their game again today. And
00:10:21most of that sign that said we have heroes and we have players, the nicest thing I've seen so far
00:10:26in our meeting with them is the players themselves know that best of all. They really do, Dick, and
00:10:31the players, to a man, wanted to come back and play. They're back in their comfortable surroundings
00:10:37in the locker room with each other, and I sensed a real willingness to play a game here this
00:10:43afternoon. Yes, it's going to be hard for all of us, but the players are here because they want to
00:10:47be here, they want to play. Also joining us down in the field, Bonnie Bernstein.
00:10:53Hi there, Dick. Well, Herman Edwards is here, and obviously a very emotional time for the entire
00:10:58organization. Herman, your message to the team before they left the locker room? Well, I think
00:11:02we have to be, you know, emotion is not going to win the game. Execution and focus is going to win
00:11:06the game for 60 minutes, and that's what we have to try to do today. We have to execute and we have
00:11:10to stay focused. Thank you. Obviously, the task at hand today, the Jets are well aware of it. Even
00:11:14before the game, much of the talk on the field, still about September 11th and the aftermath,
00:11:18and in fact, just an hour and a half before right now, Dwayne Corbett said to me, usually my focus
00:11:24is way on football right now. I'm hoping at some point it finally kicks in, Dick. All right, thank
00:11:29you, Bonnie. And back to work they go, as Lee Johnson squeezes a little extra yard out of the
00:11:37ball and gets ready to deliver his left foot. Chad Morton deep for the New York Jets, acquired
00:11:44from New Orleans. Check it to Adam Vinatieri to kick it. And Morton, who wore the green and white
00:11:53of the Jets for the first time two weeks, three weeks ago. Vinatieri gets it started.
00:11:59Morton comes up to the eight. To the outside at the 30. Still on his feet to the 40-yard line.
00:12:10So the Jets start with good field position. Matt Stevens with the tackle and outcomes of Vinny
00:12:16Testaverde. Testaverde, now in his 15th year in the NFL after his Heisman season at the University
00:12:23of Miami, Florida. Testaverde, a couple of touchdown passes in the opener against Indianapolis,
00:12:29won by the Colts 45-24, and he's moving up on the all-time NFL passing list.
00:12:37Curtis Martin, three years in New England, a thousand yards each season. Three years
00:12:42now in New York, a thousand yards each of those three, and he's the tailback.
00:12:47Testaverde. And a first down at the 49 of New England, and let's take a look at the opening
00:12:54lineup for the New York Jets. Up front, and they've been together for three years, Fabini, Jenkins,
00:13:02Mowai, Thomas, and Young. Curtis Martin and Anderson in the backfield. The Colts and Prebette
00:13:10wide out, and Anthony Becht is the tight end. First down in Patriot territory.
00:13:19That's Anderson in motion, and the toss to Martin. He's got five, and close to six to the 43-yard
00:13:28line before Anthony Pleasant can make the tackle for the Patriots, and here they are defensively.
00:13:33The starters with Hamilton, Seymour, Pleasant, and Pfeiffer. Next, Jett up front with Rabel and
00:13:39Bruschi outside, and Brian Cox, the former Jett in the middle. Ty Law and Terrell Buckley at the
00:13:44corners. Stevens and Molloy, the safety. Bill Belichick in his second season here in New
00:13:51England. Defensive mastermind, both with the Giants and Jets. Head coach at Cleveland five
00:13:57years. Pump fake by Testaverde, and he's going long, and Lavernius Coles can't get there.
00:14:06Terrell Buckley on the coverage for New England. Well, Dick, talking to both head coaches,
00:14:11one of the things that's a big concern is the buildup of the players during the week, because
00:14:16you just don't flip a switch on Sunday afternoon. It is a week's preparation. It's like climbing a
00:14:21mountain. Both Herman Edwards and Bill Belichick were pleased with the progression of their teams
00:14:27as the week went along. Both said by Friday, we were flying around. Both expect their teams to
00:14:33play well. Third down and four. Testaverde hits. Is that roll to fumble? No. Incomplete pass. His
00:14:44arm was going forward. Anthony Pleasant and Richard Seymour, the rookie from Georgia,
00:14:49in there quickly. And the call, by the way, made right on the spot by Larry Nemers, who is our
00:14:55referee today. And he is one of the originals, as they are all back. And you can see Vinny
00:15:00Testaverde's arm moving forward. And there comes Nemers in right away to say incomplete pass. But
00:15:07the officials in the NFL have settled their contractual dispute, and we have the regular
00:15:13officials back working all the NFL games this weekend. Troy Brown, who came into the league
00:15:18the same year Drew Bledsoe was the number one pick. He was picked in the last round
00:15:22and has been very productive. He's going to let it go, and it'll bounce into the end zone. So
00:15:28Tupa's kick will present a first and 10 at the 20-yard line for New England. 43 yards, 23 net.
00:15:36We'll return to Foxborough. And welcome back. Patriots had the ball for the first time. Drew
00:15:45Bledsoe now in his ninth year, just 500 yards away from joining that 30,000-yard club out of
00:15:51Washington State. I'm never quite sure where the Palouse begins. I'll take you there sometime.
00:16:07Hand off to Antoine Smith out to the 25, a gain of five. Marvin Jones, the tackler. The Patriots
00:16:14line up this way with Leight Compton, Woody Andruzzi, and Robinson Randall. Antoine Smith,
00:16:22the former Buffalo Bill Mark Edwards from Cleveland. Troy Brown and David Patton. He's
00:16:26an interesting story. We'll get to that. Rod Rutledge, the tight end. Patton brings a new
00:16:31speed, and he's a graduate of the Arena Football League. Second and five, and Smith can't get out
00:16:41of the backfield. Dropped for a loss of a yard as Mo Lewis is there for the stop. It's third and six.
00:16:47Here are the Jets defensively. Ellis, Barnes, Martin. Barton Martin picked up off the waiver
00:16:53wire, and John Abraham is a star to be. Mo Lewis, Marvin Jones, James Ferrier, familiar names at
00:16:59linebacker for New York. Aaron Glenn and Marcus Coleman at the corners. Damian Robinson acquired
00:17:04from Tennessee, and Victor Green, the safeties. And the matchup to watch is that guy right there,
00:17:09John Abraham, going against a rookie at left tackle in Matt White, their second round draft
00:17:14choice from Purdue. Third and six, a little shovel pass to Edwards, but doesn't fool the Jets. James
00:17:20Ferrier, and he stopped short of the first down. So the Jets bring on
00:17:31their punt return team with Chad Morton drifting back and Lee Johnson, who now
00:17:36owns the punting yardage record in the National Football League, approaching 50,000 yards. That's
00:17:43somewhere around 28 miles. He could start kicking here and get all the way to Boston.
00:17:48And all of that amassed over 17 years. That's a good life, 17 years as a punter. Out of BYU,
00:17:55and he lost a spiral to the 20-yard line. And a fair catch, and just missing at the last minute
00:18:02diving job by was Gerard Cherry, eluding the penalty.
00:18:10The NFL on CBS is sponsored by the HP PhotoSmart digital camera. How will you use it?
00:18:19Budweiser, with the crisp, clean, refreshing taste you'll find in no other beer.
00:18:25And by Chrysler, drive equals love.
00:18:32Lee Johnson's 51-yard punt. He had, with all those years, 17 years as longest ever
00:18:40was in the opener against Cincinnati. A 76-yard punt, and at the 21, the Jets put it in play.
00:18:50Testaverde off play action.
00:18:53Goes underneath, and short game for Curtis Martin before Mike Vrabel can trip him up.
00:19:00Well, one of the strange things happening on the field today, Dick, is going to involve Vinny
00:19:06Testaverde under center, looking across the line of scrimmage, and looking right at Brian Cox,
00:19:11his teammate for the last three years. They know each other so well. They're friends,
00:19:15and Vinny said, I know what's going to happen right off the bat. He's going to be yelling,
00:19:19Vinny T, Vinny T. That's what he always called Vinny, and good friends, but today competitors.
00:19:25Of course, knows the scheme for the Jets, and will be trying to find new teammates.
00:19:30Martin, a former Patriot, a yard shy of the first down,
00:19:33Ty Law from the corner to make the stop. It'll be third and one.
00:19:38Yeah, he said, Cox, he'll try to make me smile and laugh. He said, but I know he's going to hit
00:19:43me, and I'm not going to be smiling much during this game. You notice that neck brace that Brian
00:19:48Cox wears. Well, when he played for the Jets, it was green, and when he came to New England,
00:19:53he brought his green shoulder pads and neck brace with him, and the guys in the locker room said,
00:19:57Brian, you're in New England now, that the green pads have got to go. We do not wear green here
00:20:02in New England. Ty Law, and making that tackle, then injured, and jogs off under his own power.
00:20:08See Cox's record with the New York Jets, and over his career with four interceptions,
00:20:16and 21 forced fumbles, and 52 sacks. You see them washing out the left eye of Ty Law. Hopefully
00:20:23nothing too serious. Leonard Myers, a rookie, replaces him, number 25, third and one, right
00:20:29into the teeth of that Patriot defense, and pretty solid as Anderson met by Brian Cox.
00:20:36It'll be close for the first down. Well, we mentioned the Patriots' number two
00:20:44draft choice, starting at offensive tackle. Their number one draft choice, Richard Seymour,
00:20:48he's number 93, right at the bottom of there. You saw Brian Cox come flying in,
00:20:53so the Patriots getting playing time early from both of their top draft choices. Richard Seymour,
00:21:00out of Georgia, boy, he's going to be a good player in this league for a long time. 6'6",
00:21:05a little over 300 pounds, still got room to grow, if you can imagine that. Only 21 years of age,
00:21:11was two times all SEC at Georgia, and his help on that stop will send the Jets' punting team
00:21:18on the field. The other point, Dan, yesterday in talking with both Bill Belichick and Herman
00:21:26Edwards, you asked the question, coaching this week, were you a little easier on them because
00:21:31of the circumstances, or were you tougher than normal? Interesting answer, and it was the same
00:21:35from both. The same from both. They said, if anything, I was tougher on the guys. Football
00:21:40players can't be given an excuse for failure, and both of them said, if anything, I was harder on
00:21:47the guys this week than I was the week before the opener, and just a little insight as to what's
00:21:52involved in coaching in this business. There's no manual to tell these guys how to handle something
00:21:57like we've all been through as a nation. You have to go on your own and hope you figure it out.
00:22:02Took his punt to Troy Brown. Brown at the 24, gets a good block, and then bumped out of bounds
00:22:10at the 30-yard line. 46-yard punt, six on the return,
00:22:14nine and a half minutes left in the opening quarter. New England and the Jets, no score.
00:22:24Sellout of 62,000 at Foxborough. Each fan is presented with an American flag, and
00:22:30unanimous in our standing salute to the bravery of our firefighters and policemen.
00:22:40Kevin Faulk, the new tailback in this sequence, and he was able to struggle barely back to the
00:22:45line of scrimmage. John Abrahams sprinting in from that defensive end position. Log on to
00:22:50NFL.com for real-time scoring, up-to-the-minute stats, live play-by-play only at NFL.com or AOL
00:22:57keyword NFL.com. Word comes along that Patriot cornerback Ty Law just had some debris in his
00:23:04eye. They've gotten it out, and he'll be back out the next time the Patriots are on defense.
00:23:12Second and a long 10 for Bledsoe.
00:23:14Flag goes down as Redmond picks up five to the 35. Abraham and Therrier collaborate on the tackle.
00:23:32Not being able to predict the future with any regularity, I think, I feel strongly,
00:23:38though, Dick, there will be more flags thrown this weekend than we have seen
00:23:42thus far. Way to go out of the limb. Yeah, the replacement officials were very sparing in their
00:23:46throwing of the flag. Holding offense, number 86, 10-yard penalty, repeat second out. David Patton,
00:23:55the wide receiver from West Carolina, he was kind of bounced around for a while, was out of football
00:24:02working an eight-dollar-an-hour job. He just wouldn't give up. He played at the Albany Fireballs
00:24:09in the Arena League. Coaches realize that holding is going to happen with your tight end and your
00:24:16offensive linemen. They really become ill-tempered when it's a wide receiver who gets caught for
00:24:23holding. They realize how much they are out in the open, and they really work so hard at keeping
00:24:29their arms to the inside. It's just, you cannot get away with anything when you're as exposed as
00:24:34a wide receiver. The second down and 14. That's Troy Brown in motion, and Bledsoe the throw.
00:24:42Back under the lead can take the Redmond to the 35, so they picked up the 10
00:24:47from the previous penalty, and it'll be third down and five. Barrier and Coleman made the tackle.
00:24:55J.R. Redmond, Joseph Robert. He was their third-round draft choice last year, and again,
00:25:03Robert Edwards, who was hurt several years ago. The Patriots' number one draft choice,
00:25:08not the answer this year. Desperately, this franchise seeks to find a running back
00:25:13and a running game to go with it. It's all Drew Bledsoe offensively, unfortunately.
00:25:18Direct snap this time. Number 33, and that's Kevin Faulk who kicks his way out to the 48-yard line.
00:25:26Well, there's a little razzle-dazzle.
00:25:33Charlie Weiss, the offensive coordinator, goes into the bag of tricks early. Boy, look at that
00:25:38snap right to him. What a great job. Boy, that's a play that so easily can just fall apart. The
00:25:47snap's a little bit off. Boy, really well done. Mike Compton out in front with blocking. Robinson
00:25:54Randle out front. Good-looking play. Good pick-up. 13 yards for Faulk. That was his first carry of
00:25:59the season. This is Mark Edwards plowing through. Tacklers to the 37. Victor Green finally gets him
00:26:08to the green. And what a nice addition for the Patriots is Mark Edwards. With the Cleveland
00:26:14Browns last year, Butch Davis with the new system in Cleveland really doesn't have need for a true
00:26:19fullback, and that's what Edwards is. And, you know, Dick, it surprised us yesterday when we were
00:26:24talking to Bill Belichick about his running ability. He called him his best runner and maybe one of his
00:26:30best all-around players. But that was kind of a shock for us. In San Francisco and Cleveland,
00:26:37no one noted that total talent. Let's go. Good protection.
00:26:44Overthrown, and Victor Green was closer than David Patton.
00:26:51That's not good.
00:26:55Victor Green, the jet-strong safety, also has the reputation of one of the hardest-hitting
00:27:01safeties in football. He led the team last year with interceptions. He had six. But Victor will
00:27:07come up and tell you that the deep middle and the deep outside of the field belong
00:27:13to number 21. And he who comes in my area is going to pay for it.
00:27:18Hand off to Antoine Smith. Not much there. Marvin Jones.
00:27:23In on the play for the Jets. Marvin Jones now in his ninth season. Can that be the number one pick?
00:27:29Fourth player selected in 93. Led the team in tackles last week with seven. Three-time
00:27:37All-America. He won all the awards, took home the trophies. Lombardi, Butkus.
00:27:43He stays at Florida State.
00:27:47How about Florida State? Getting beat by North Carolina.
00:27:52John Bucking, the coach of North Carolina. Outside, and Sean Ellis,
00:27:59whether drawn off or not, was two steps into the New England backfield.
00:28:02Defense. Offside. Number 98. Unrestricted to the quarterback. Five-yard penalty.
00:28:08Shane Burton is the Jet ticketed. And speaking of coaches, Al Groh, the former Jets coach with a
00:28:15last-second win at Clemson for this University of Virginia team last night. Cavaliers, huh?
00:28:20Well, this certainly makes the play selection, coming downstairs from Charlie Weiss, a whole
00:28:26lot easier now that you go into a third and short instead of a third and short.
00:28:29A lot more plays on the sheet in this price range. Third and two.
00:28:37Edmonds and Redmond behind Bladzowicz. Redmond.
00:28:42Holes at the 20 and inside the 15. What a hole.
00:28:47Well, they're taking advantage of the fact that the Jets have two new tackles in their own defense,
00:28:52Dick. You documented that before.
00:28:54But success in the middle. Andrewsie, Compton, the two guards, Damian Woody, the center.
00:29:00A little bit of a delay, and there comes Mark Edwards. And look at his lead block.
00:29:06So Mark Edwards, not only an outstanding runner, but he gets an outstanding lead
00:29:10block in there as well as he goes right into Marvin Jones.
00:29:15And what do you know? The Patriots running the game.
00:29:18And this is physical football, running the ball like this. And it's something the Patriots have
00:29:24been outdone in that category by the Jets over the years. The Jets have won six of the last eight
00:29:30games between these two teams. And they're looking to win a second game, and it's something we can't
00:29:36predict. We'll see what happens. And it's something that the Patriots have been outdone in that
00:29:41category. And it's something we can't predict. And it's something we can't predict.
00:29:44years. The Jets have won six of the last eight games between these two teams and
00:29:48Brian Cox telling his teammates the Jets believe they're going to come in here
00:29:52and push you around. I'm here now. That's not going to happen.
00:29:57We're going to be a little more physical. Now this is a good start for New England.
00:30:00Second down and three. That's a bad start seeing the ball never got snapped.
00:30:09Patriots against the Bengals made only two red zone trips and produced two
00:30:14touchdowns. As the Bengals who have shown again that they've improved tremendously.
00:30:21False start. Offense number 65. Five-yard penalty. Still second down.
00:30:30Damian Woody is the center. He gets called for the false start. It appears
00:30:35that everyone in the New England offensive team knew the snap count
00:30:39except the guy who has to deliver the football, Mr. Woody. So the five-yard
00:30:44penalty that is embarrassing. Well in the old days they would call the first guy
00:30:48who moved and he got the penalty. You know the old story was as a center you
00:30:52can't be offside. They actually credited him with the false start.
00:30:57He takes them back to the 12-yard line. So it's second down and a short eight.
00:31:07Underneath complete at the nine-yard line and hit hard Mark Edwards by Moe
00:31:12Lewis. Well what an all-around football player Moe Lewis. Last three years he's
00:31:20gone to the Pro Bowl and that's why. Because he is an all-around football
00:31:24player. Led the team in sacks last year but he's not just a guy that rushes the
00:31:29quarterback. In coverage, playing the run, short yardage, rushing the quarterback.
00:31:34It makes no difference. Moe Lewis proficient in every aspect of the game.
00:31:37He's now the dean of the Jets in the 11th season.
00:31:42Third down and four.
00:31:46From the nine, Wetzel. Looks to the end zone.
00:31:50Throws, almost intercepted. Victor had it. Victor Green down low. It was a tough chance but he had a crack at an interception.
00:32:02Take a look at the cover. That's David Patton who's making his break and it
00:32:06looks like the ball was way back to the inside. Patton was open but the ball was
00:32:12a good two or three yards low and back more towards the middle of the field.
00:32:1626-yard field goal attempt for Vinatieri. Made one last week, 39 yards to give
00:32:24New England the yearly lead.
00:32:32That's a new one. Wait a minute, yeah. Because this would be a first down if
00:32:37this is against the Jets. Damian Robinson with that hesitant count by
00:32:42Tupa, the former quarterback. Yeah, five yards would be good enough for a first
00:32:47down if this is against New York. Or check that Lee Johnson who is the
00:32:52holder. He's calling out the signals. You could hear through our microphones.
00:32:56Of course, half the distance to the goal will not be enough. Oh, you're right.
00:33:00That went well. No, five. The nine-yard line to the four and a half. How close is it?
00:33:09I would think they're gonna have to measure here. We have a delay of game on
00:33:18the defense. The end on the left side of the defense made the offense false start.
00:33:24That's a half the distance penalty. We'll measure it to see if it's a first down.
00:33:28Yeah, this is going to be very close. Let's listen to Lee Johnson.
00:33:38That's what's known in the business as a hard count. That's where you really
00:33:43have an in... Boy, you crapped the practice at. We've seen a lot of nice wrinkles by
00:33:48the Patriots so far. We saw the direct snap to Kevin Faulk. Now we've seen some
00:33:54real discipline on their special teams. And sitting tight, this is close.
00:34:04Hmm. I would say about first down.
00:34:14Well, defensively, that's about as big a mistake as you can make other than just
00:34:19outright giving up a score. Where you surrender a first down inside your own
00:34:26five-yard line by just making a mistake, a mental error. So first and goal from
00:34:32the four for the Patriots. Twelfth play of the drive coming up.
00:34:40Yeah, he got them both on that defensive left side, didn't he? Both Glenn and Robinson.
00:34:49Edwards straight on for a yard, maybe a yard and a half.
00:34:55This is where, as an offensive football team, and specifically the offensive line,
00:34:59when you're trying to build a running game, when you're trying to build your
00:35:02confidence in running the football, this is where success in this area would have
00:35:07dividends that last for a long time. Ryan Cox moves out of the backfield, and he's
00:35:12familiar with this role. He's been doing this for a while. He's around the league.
00:35:16Everybody's utilized him here.
00:35:19Edwards in motion, second and goal.
00:35:26Wave of New Yorkers, Farrier and Abraham leading the charge.
00:35:35Now, as you're the lead blocker, one of the things you want to do is hit one of
00:35:39the guys in a white shirt. Brian Cox runs right into the back of Greg Robinson
00:35:44and Randall, and I'm sure Greg was wondering, what was that?
00:35:52Who hit me in the back? No, what did I do wrong?
00:35:55Third and goal from the two, as that Jets defense challenging Budsaw on the Patriots.
00:36:02Smith again, no way, squeezes to the one.
00:36:07Rick Lyle, sub reading was there first, and Marvin Jones as well.
00:36:11But you can really see what Bill Belichick wants to do. He's trying to build confidence
00:36:17in this running game. Three straight times they run, and of course, three times they
00:36:21don't get there, and they're going to try for four.
00:36:27Runner pass this time. Brian Cox comes back into the lineup.
00:36:33We asked Coach Belichick, does he have any plays designed where Cox will get the ball
00:36:37running or catching? He said, well, sometime we might throw that one in.
00:36:42Running out of time, they're going to run out of time here, and Budsaw doesn't see it.
00:36:47And that's going to cost them five.
00:36:50They took a lot of time in getting personnel on the field.
00:36:53There's a flag down. Unless Drew called it and got the call.
00:36:58This is going to be delay against the Patriots. Ouch.
00:37:02Delay again. Offense, five yard penalty, still fourth down.
00:37:08So the field goal unit now will come on.
00:37:10Well, the Jets, the Jets who gave the Patriots the first down because of a mistake, they
00:37:17make one heck of a goal line stand.
00:37:19Three straight times the Patriots hammer away, three times they get much of nothing, and
00:37:25now it's the Patriots turn to make a big mistake.
00:37:28It was first and goal at the four and three shots got them a yard each time to the one
00:37:32and now Vinatieri, a little more than a extra point, 24 yards.
00:37:43And the Patriots settle for the three.
00:37:45Final minute of the opening quarter, New England up three nothing.
00:37:56The NFL on CBS is sponsored by DirecTV, the number one digital
00:38:02satellite entertainment provider, and by Michelin, because so much is riding on your
00:38:09tires.
00:38:14Welcome back to Hamburg with Dan Deardorff, Bonnie Bernstein, Foxboro Stadium, its final
00:38:19year now in its 31st season.
00:38:24Sixty four yards and 15 plays, but look at that on the ground, 62 of the 64 yards for
00:38:31the Patriots. New stadium next year, that'll be about 7000 capacity higher.
00:38:38You can see the rim of the stadium as it's more than half completed.
00:38:42Beautiful new facility.
00:38:43And although I really missed this one, I won't say Patriot fans, not Chad Morton for the
00:38:51tag. 25, got some room out here, 30 and the former USC star is out of bounds at the 34
00:39:00run out by Matt Stephens, three nothing Patriots laid 40 seconds remaining opening
00:39:05quarter.
00:39:11Welcome back for America Fights Back, there's the number 1-800-710-8002, supporting the
00:39:19disaster relief effort, helping the families of the victims 1-800-710-8002.
00:39:26Three nothing, New England, final seconds.
00:39:29Kevin Swain now on the field for the first time for the Jets.
00:39:33He's been playing football for more than 40 consecutive weeks, the XFL with Orlando, then
00:39:40with a nearby New York Dragons in the Arena League, number 82 Swain, knows a lot of
00:39:46locker rooms.
00:39:47It'll be a 30 second timeout.
00:39:48Timeout, New England, a 30 second timeout that Belichick rues having to spend.
00:40:0024 yard field goal by Vinatieri giving the Patriots the only score tonight after our
00:40:06game, 60 minutes and then Academy Award winner Richard Dreyfuss comes to CBS in his
00:40:10first TV series.
00:40:12Don't miss the education of Max Bickford, premieres tonight after 60 minutes here on
00:40:16CBS.
00:40:17Well, football coaches are always talking about keeping your head on a swivel.
00:40:29That's what Larry Izzo, right there, number 53, he did not keep his head on a swivel.
00:40:34He never saw Lamont Jordan coming over.
00:40:36That was on the kickoff return the Jets just had, and that was an out.
00:40:42For the 37 yard line, Ty Law back in the game makes the tackle.
00:40:46That probably will be the last play of the quarter as Testaverde slowly moves to the
00:40:53sidelines to get his signals relayed through.
00:40:58Paul Hackett, the new offensive coordinator with the Jets, Ted Cottrell, the new
00:41:02defensive coordinator.
00:41:05Paul Hackett, the last three years, has been the head coach at the University of Southern
00:41:09California. Prior to that, though, a lot of years in the NFL.
00:41:13And second and six, with four seconds left in the quarter, they will get a playoff.
00:41:18And it's to Martin, 40, squirts it out to the 45, 40, and now the Bonds at the New
00:41:25England.
00:41:25There's a flag at the 43 in Jets territory.
00:41:31But there's Curtis Martin, so clever, not the fastest, not necessarily the quickest,
00:41:37but boy, does he read defense as well with the ball.
00:41:40And it is for naught.
00:41:42Offense, number 77, 10 yard penalty.
00:41:46Right guard, Randy Thomas.
00:41:54So that negates an excellent run by Curtis Martin.
00:41:59Of course, you linemen never thought you held.
00:42:02I mean, why call it on me now?
00:42:04Well, I can guarantee you that every offensive lineman in the NFL has talked about the
00:42:08fact that the regular umpires are back and the blatant holding that's been going on
00:42:13around this league as a thing of the past.
00:42:15We'll return to Foxborough right after this message.
00:42:22Welcome back as we open the second quarter here at Foxborough Stadium, New England
00:42:26Patriots leading 3-0.
00:42:28Each of these teams looking for that first win and kind of a tough pill to swallow to
00:42:34open any season 0-1-2 and both coaches reminding their players.
00:42:39The Jets have it at their own 27-yard line.
00:42:45Up the middle goes Martin, across the 35 to the 36 before Brian Cox can trip him up.
00:42:52The difference between the two teams, Dick, would be that Cincinnati beat the Patriots on
00:42:57opening day. And of course, Cincinnati's in another division.
00:43:00The Jets lost to Indy.
00:43:02And if they were to lose to the Patriots today, not only would they open at 0-2, but they'd be 0-2
00:43:07in the Eastern Division here in the AFC.
00:43:09And that just also makes it worse.
00:43:14Third down and long for the first down for Testaverde, he goes for three wide receivers.
00:43:25Hit and down he goes, Anthony Pleasant with a sack.
00:43:31Played five years in Cleveland for Belichick and the 12-year veteran from Tennessee State
00:43:36has his first sack of the year.
00:43:38Now Vinny gets a look downfield and you take a look at that work right there.
00:43:42But getting back to the inside of Fabini, and that's the key, good work upfield.
00:43:47A real veteran feeling that he had an opening back to the inside.
00:43:51Anthony Pleasant, who's been around this game a long time, knew he had Fabini leaning to the
00:43:56outside, made the sharp move across his face directly to Testaverde.
00:44:00Tom Cooper sends a dying duck that goes short and out of bounds in front of the Jets bench
00:44:09at about the 35-yard line.
00:44:12We have a flag down and a battle royal going on over at the 35-yard line for three Patriots
00:44:19against a single Jets.
00:44:22Back up, back up, back up.
00:44:28Ferguson drawing all that attention, McFerguson of the New York Jets, a defensive back, and
00:44:33probably one of those situations where everyone was trying to block him and finally got him
00:44:38down on the ground.
00:44:40Myers and Cherry amongst the Patriots doing the work, and this might be one of those negating penalties.
00:44:47Looks like somebody just threw Ferguson his helmet, that's...
00:44:58Leonard Myers there looks amused by what's been going on.
00:45:03No, no, I'm serious.
00:45:04Oh no.
00:45:05On number 36 in the defense and number 22 in the offense, those penalties were all set
00:45:12for a replay fourth down.
00:45:15Oh, so the short kick, that's a break for the Jets because the ball had gone out of
00:45:20bounds at the 35.
00:45:23Here we are up here.
00:45:24You see the double team by the Patriots.
00:45:28Let's take a look at...
00:45:29Oh, and there's the left elbow.
00:45:30That was a great shot by Lawyer Malloy.
00:45:33Looked like directly to the head, but I don't think that's what drew a flag.
00:45:38I think it's what happened afterwards in response.
00:45:42Damian Robinson is number 22 for the Jets, who was singled out by Larry Nemers.
00:45:50But Lawyer Malloy, you could see him take a pretty good shot.
00:45:57Further discussion by the officials.
00:46:04I didn't see a flag fly with that initial blow by Lawyer Malloy.
00:46:13I'm assuming that it was in the scuffle between the two players.
00:46:16That's why they both got flagged.
00:46:24I'm trying to be certain, as referee Larry Nemers, that this was the correct call.
00:46:32Well, the NFL rulebook has a thing called clean hands, and it's got to do with if you
00:46:38get possession of the ball.
00:46:40And it depends when the penalties happened and under what circumstances.
00:46:44There is a way that you could actually, where the Patriots could end up with the football.
00:46:54See, they're re-kicking it.
00:46:55It's funny, as captain, he's talking to Lawyer Malloy, the guy who's directly involved with it.
00:47:01You can see that Ferguson is at the bottom of this.
00:47:04He's already lost his helmet.
00:47:07That's just goading by Lawyer Malloy as he continues.
00:47:11Don't patronize me.
00:47:12No, as he pats him on the head.
00:47:14Kind of ironic that as defensive captain and the instigator of the whole thing,
00:47:18Larry Nemers is talking to Lawyer Malloy about what the Patriots' options are here.
00:47:23Well, it's only fair the Patriots should be represented by a lawyer.
00:47:30How did I miss something that obvious?
00:47:37I've lost my fastball.
00:47:38Since the foul happened during the kick, the receiving team has the option
00:47:43of keeping the ball and having them penalized from the end of the run.
00:47:48They have chosen to offset the foul and re-kick.
00:47:53That is under that umbrella of what they call a clean hands foul.
00:47:58The Patriots could have kept the football.
00:48:00But they'd have been penalized 15 from the 35-yard line.
00:48:04And they didn't like their field position, so they'll give it another try.
00:48:07This would not be the time to throw an elbow out there on one of the sprinters.
00:48:23Brown to the 40, to the 50.
00:48:26Still on his feet and picking up blockers.
00:48:29And finally, grilled at the 43-yard line.
00:48:3323-yard return by Troy Brown.
00:48:36And a wise move by Brad Seeley right there, the special teams coach,
00:48:39and the Patriots to make the Jets kick again.
00:48:42It worked out.
00:48:45Here's to Bucky Jones and Taren Shaw working against this guy right here, Chris Hayes.
00:48:50Look how you're allowed to hold.
00:48:52Look at the way that Shaw has a hold of his jersey.
00:48:56Loses his helmet, but you've got to give a lot of credit here to Chris Hayes.
00:49:02Making every effort to get right back in it.
00:49:05Brown returning it to the 43-yard line.
00:49:10J.R. Redman, the loss of a yard.
00:49:13Let's go down to Bonnie Bernstein.
00:49:15Well, Dick, on that last drive, you saw several different running backs for the Patriots.
00:49:18And if you think about it, New England hasn't had the same starting running back
00:49:22since that guy in green was here in 97, Curtis Martin in 98,
00:49:26it was Robert Edwards in 99, Terry Allen last year with Kevin Fox,
00:49:31and Antoine Smith with a free agent pickup,
00:49:33and Bill Belichick says we were lucky to get them, him,
00:49:35because Slim Pickens out there.
00:49:40Unloading the ball and almost to the arms of Aaron Glenn,
00:49:43as James Reid putting the pressure on the New England quarterback.
00:49:48Well, Bonnie, you talk about the running back situation as we take a look at this play,
00:49:52and we'll come back to that.
00:49:53You can see Drew's going to get hit from the backside right at the very end.
00:49:57See that?
00:49:58And he just wasn't able to step into the pass.
00:50:00Very nearly intercepted.
00:50:01But you can't blame the Patriots for their inability to find a running back,
00:50:04because they had one in Robert Edwards, who gained over 1,100 yards in 98.
00:50:08And what a tragic story when he blew up his thing.
00:50:11There again, Levin and Bledsoe can't find a receiver.
00:50:14And he flipped that one away, and it'll be ruled incomplete, I would guess.
00:50:19Yes, incomplete pass.
00:50:20You don't have to throw it overhand.
00:50:22You can throw it sidearm.
00:50:23And he saves a possible short loss.
00:50:27Well, if he's not out of the pocket, that's intentional grounding.
00:50:31Because if your intent is to...
00:50:33Oh, that's intentional grounding.
00:50:36There's no way that that's not intentional grounding.
00:50:41You can do that only if you're outside the tight end pocket.
00:50:44Intentional grounding on the quarterback.
00:50:46Threw the ball directly into the ground at the 10-yard penalty.
00:50:50Lost it down.
00:50:52Bledsoe jogging back out on the field.
00:50:56If they accept the penalty, they'll be third and long.
00:51:01No, they lose the down, so it's fourth anyway.
00:51:04And on comes the punter, Lee Johnson.
00:51:11Well, credit Steve Martin with the guy who really made that happen.
00:51:14He was the guy that was all over Drew Bledsoe.
00:51:17But you've got to be outside the tight end to tight end pocket
00:51:22to be able to get away with something like that
00:51:24where you can just dump it up towards the line of scrimmage.
00:51:26Out there, you can throw it sidearm or underhand any way you want it.
00:51:29As long as you get it back to the line of scrimmage, you're all right.
00:51:32Johnson.
00:51:36Morton's going to let it bounce, and it takes a Patriot roll
00:51:39down inside the 10-yard line.
00:51:4646-yard punt. Patriots lead 3-0.
00:51:52The NFL on CBS.

00:52:16Welcome back. After the game, 60 minutes, a time for all of us to be informed.
00:52:21And Ed Bradley reports from the Middle East tonight on 60 Minutes.
00:52:25First down, Jets inside their 10.
00:52:30Chester Bertie has not thrown much, but he fires from deep in his own end to Quebec.
00:52:34And he is covered by three Patriots.
00:52:37Kyle Law leading the pack.
00:52:40Well, that was his third completion out of five attempts.
00:52:44Before that, that was for a grand total of eight yards,
00:52:47and I don't think he picked up anything there.
00:52:50Three completions for about nine or ten yards.
00:52:53That's, well, we'll get, there we go.
00:52:5619 to be exact, so it is not a,
00:52:59it's a very slow start here for the Jets offensively.
00:53:03Only 23 yards rushing to this point as well.
00:53:06The Patriots have tipped the football for most of the first quarter.
00:53:10Second and six, the toss to Martin, and he's hit at the 10-yard line and driven back.
00:53:20Brandon Mitchell.
00:53:23That's a five-year veteran from Texas A&M with a solid hit.
00:53:32That was just good, solid defense.
00:53:35Job A, turn it back to the inside.
00:53:38Job B, have inside flow to the football,
00:53:42and that's exactly what the Patriots had right there.
00:53:45Look at the time of possession there for New England.
00:53:49Almost two to one in both categories.
00:53:52Richie Anderson into the lineup for the Jets on third and nine,
00:53:56and Testaverde fires to the 20-yard line to Lavernius Coles,
00:54:01and that looks good enough for a first down out at the 20.
00:54:04Well, he might be 37 years old,
00:54:07be 38 later on this football season,
00:54:10but Vinny Testaverde can still put some zip on the football
00:54:13as it goes towards the sidelines.
00:54:16A perfect pass that only Lavernius Coles could have caught,
00:54:19low and to the outside, and a very effective throw by Vinny for the first down.
00:54:23He still throws as pretty a ball as anyone does.
00:54:26He sure does, and he is not a kid.
00:54:33First down, Martin.
00:54:36Waiting for him again, battles for a yard or two.
00:54:39Testaverde, whose dad was a concrete mason
00:54:42and helped in the construction of the Twin Towers.
00:54:45He went back, got close to ground zero,
00:54:48and picked up a piece of concrete, granted about the size of a football,
00:54:51and took it back to the locker room. It's in his locker there.
00:54:54He said he wanted it to symbolize the commitment
00:54:57and the bravery of the men and women who've been working so relentlessly there,
00:55:01and it's a lesson for all of us in life, not just football,
00:55:04and that's going to be his reminder.
00:55:12One second and long. Screen it.
00:55:15Boy, again, the Patriots, as if they've got their head in the Jets' huddle,
00:55:19they have really stifled Curtis Martin.
00:55:22Brable and Johnson this time.
00:55:25Well, let's face it, there's great familiarity between these two teams,
00:55:29but if you're going to shadow somebody, it is Curtis Martin, the guy you shadow.
00:55:34And how about that job by Richard Seymour,
00:55:37the rookie defensive tackle, who goes out
00:55:41and is actually the first guy to get his hands on to Curtis Martin.
00:55:44Boy, now there's how you justify being a number one draft choice.
00:55:49Six players selected overall.
00:55:52Third and ten. That was outstanding awareness.
00:55:55Got the birdie.
00:55:58To the sideline, and incomplete.
00:56:01Intended for Wayne Corvette. Kevin Swain, rather, was the target.
00:56:04And Leonard Myers, who was a sixth-round pick
00:56:07out of the University of Miami, Florida,
00:56:11and has developed very rapidly for the Patriots,
00:56:14has become their fifth defensive back.
00:56:17And Romeo Grinnell, we got a good shot of him over there on the sidelines,
00:56:20congratulating his troops as they came off of the field.
00:56:23There's Romeo.
00:56:26He and Bill Belichick have been together for a long, long time,
00:56:29and part of that New York Giants connection.
00:56:32Defensive coordinator now.
00:56:35Troy Brown, another short kick by Tupac.
00:56:38Last week he had a hip problem, and that isn't the Tupac
00:56:41that we've seen root the ball out in past seasons.
00:56:44Only 28 yards on that punt.
00:56:47It's 3-0 New England, nine minutes plus, remaining second quarter.
00:56:54Welcome back to New England.
00:56:57The New England Patriots, with a short field goal by Adam Vinatieri,
00:57:00have the lead and a good field position on that short Tupac punt.
00:57:03First down at the Jets, 49.
00:57:08And we're off to Antoine Smith,
00:57:11and Smith with a game of about four.
00:57:14Darling James Darling makes the tackle,
00:57:17a reminder to follow all the games on NFL.com.
00:57:20And after the games, get in-depth analysis and recaps
00:57:23from the experts only at NFL.com
00:57:26or AOL keyword, NFL.com.
00:57:29The Patriots now have
00:57:32an adjustment in the offensive line.
00:57:36It's number 76.
00:57:39Williams has moved into right tackle,
00:57:42and Greg Robinson-Rangel, injured with an elbow, is out.
00:57:45And that's been a weak spot for the Patriots.
00:57:53Barnes helping out Mo Lewis.
00:57:56We're getting a good look at what the Patriots would like to do
00:57:59offensively, and that is hammer away between the tackles.
00:58:02When Mark Edwards was mentioned to us
00:58:06by Bill Belichick as maybe being his best running back,
00:58:09he said, certainly he is our best running back between the tackles.
00:58:12And knowing that the Jets have moved
00:58:15Sean Ellis back out the defensive end,
00:58:18two new guys in there in Barnes and Martin,
00:58:21why not try to take advantage of it by trying to get physical
00:58:24between your two offensive tackles?
00:58:27And third down and a long three.
00:58:30Jets might have leaned forward, and the flag goes down.
00:58:33That was intended for Kevin Faulk,
00:58:36but John Abraham, number 94, the second year
00:58:39defensive end from South Carolina,
00:58:42he's so eager to get after the quarterback.
00:58:45Offside, number 94,
00:58:48the five-yard penalty will make it a first down.
00:58:51It's what all great pass rushers have,
00:58:54is an anticipation of the snap count.
00:58:57You try to get every advantage.
00:59:01He just couldn't hold back.
00:59:04Oh, look how frustrated he is.
00:59:07This man has greatness all over him.
00:59:10He is going to develop into one of the fine pass rushers
00:59:13this game knows in the next seven or eight or ten years.
00:59:16We're calling him a big Derek Thomas.
00:59:19He can go.
00:59:22That's it off, but Edwards tackled for a loss
00:59:25at the 40-yard line as Victor Green saw that one all the way.
00:59:28That was Abraham plowing into Bledsoe as he delivered the ball.
00:59:31Defensive linemen aren't supposed to be able to close this quickly.
00:59:34Look how he's going to cover the distance.
00:59:37He's starting in the two points,
00:59:40standing up, and just completely surprises Bledsoe.
00:59:43What a tribute to Drew that he's able,
00:59:46falling backwards and with Abraham in his face,
00:59:49to get this and deliver it to Edwards.
00:59:52It went for a loss, but Drew Bledsoe,
00:59:56delivered a pretty good ball.
00:59:59Second and 13, Abraham who had four sacks and only six games
01:00:02before an entry as a rookie.
01:00:05Underneath, the throw is complete, and it's David Patton
01:00:08for maybe three, four yards,
01:00:11and Abraham trailing the play makes that tackle.
01:00:14Well, there's one way to atone for a penalty
01:00:17that cost your team five yards.
01:00:20It's just you can't get into a discussion with anyone
01:00:23about John Abraham without all sorts of adjectives.
01:00:26Working against a double team, and look at the hustle.
01:00:29Coming all the way back across the field, wanting to be in on it.
01:00:32A lot of defensive linemen are happy to just take care
01:00:35of their little three yard or four yard area.
01:00:38Outside of that, it's not like this.
01:00:41Third down and 10, Bledsoe
01:00:44fakes the screen, going long for Brown,
01:00:47intercepted! It's Aaron Glenn,
01:00:50and he's tackled at the two, three yard line.
01:00:53Troy Brown the target.
01:00:56On third and nine, that's better than any punt that the Patriots could have hoped for.
01:00:59I don't know how the fans can boo.
01:01:02You couldn't possibly have asked your punter to punt it out of bounds
01:01:05at the two yard line like that.
01:01:08So third and long, not that bad of a play,
01:01:11and not that bad of a decision by Drew Bledsoe.
01:01:14The NFL on CBS.
01:01:18He's sponsored by Original Coors.
01:01:21Nothing beats an original.
01:01:24And by IBM, taking e-business and your business
01:01:27to the next level.
01:01:42Aaron Glenn with his 20th career interception.
01:01:45He, along with Jet's teammates, are the family center
01:01:48of counseling victims.
01:01:51About 12 days ago, he said,
01:01:54boy, did I learn to listen.
01:01:57From his own end zone, the handoff, and Martin battling his way out
01:02:00across the 10 yard line and close to a first down.
01:02:03Let's go back to the pick by Aaron Glenn.
01:02:06What a good run there by Curtis Martin, but this is why they're having to come away
01:02:09from their own goal line.
01:02:12And then goes down the field, but Aaron Glenn is looking more like
01:02:15the intended receiver than is Troy Brown.
01:02:18But wow, coming out from being backed up against your own goal line.
01:02:21What outstanding blocking by the Jet's offensive line
01:02:24to give Curtis Martin that hole.
01:02:27Boy, there's nothing sweeter for an offensive line than being able to
01:02:30get yourself a little breathing room from your own goal line.
01:02:33And first down, back to Curtis Martin and Martin,
01:02:36former star at the University of Pittsburgh,
01:02:3920 yard line, a look ahead to next week's CBS doubleheader.
01:02:42There are the early games.
01:02:45Big one there, Miami at St. Louis will be out in Dan Deardorff's neighborhood.
01:02:48And late games, how about Baltimore at Denver
01:02:51with the Super Bowl champions licking their wounds
01:02:54after an upset today.
01:02:57And it all begins with NFL today at 12 noon Eastern time.
01:03:03Martin now with 38 yards rushing in this first half.
01:03:06A little more on that carry.
01:03:10New England showing a little running game today.
01:03:14Back to the workhorse, now it's Richie Anderson this time
01:03:17and Pleasant and Saylor.
01:03:20Two tackles for New England make the stop.
01:03:23And as everybody knows, Richie Anderson,
01:03:26mostly a receiver when he gets the...
01:03:29Even he's smiling at one of his rare carries.
01:03:32He carried it twice last week, but Richie is a receiver
01:03:35Look at that, 27 carries for the entire season.
01:03:38Put that against the fact that he had 88 receptions last year
01:03:41on his way to the Pro Bowl.
01:03:44What a fine young man, a fine player
01:03:47and deserved credit last year
01:03:50by being able to go to Hawaii and represent his team.
01:03:53Third and one, Jets are one for five in third down conversions
01:03:56and Martin adds to that average
01:03:59with a four yard hit up the middle
01:04:02and Hamilton and Pleasant make the stop.
01:04:05First down for the Jets.
01:04:08And this is more of the offensive production the Jets have been counting on
01:04:11with this veteran offensive line.
01:04:14This group has been together now for a couple of years.
01:04:17Very physical group, good size, excellent athletic ability
01:04:20anchored by Kevin Mowai, a two-time Pro Bowler over the ball.
01:04:23Factor in a guy like Curtis Martin.
01:04:26Durable, smart.
01:04:30He is indeed well-conditioned.
01:04:41And he's to the 50 and trying to rip the ball out of his
01:04:44grasp, but unsuccessfully with the Patriots
01:04:47as Roman Pfeiffer trailing the play.
01:04:50Good ball movement here by Vinny Testaverde.
01:04:54Look how he sells it inside there to Curtis Martin.
01:04:57That freeze, you can see both linebackers of the Patriots
01:05:00step up towards the line of scrimmage.
01:05:03That frees the whole middle area of the field for Wayne Crabette
01:05:06to come in short of the safeties.
01:05:09The linebacker support wasn't there because they bit on the run fake.
01:05:12Biggest gain of the game for the Jets, 25 yards.
01:05:15All right.
01:05:18And Testaverde on top again
01:05:21for Coles, and he caught it!
01:05:24He caught it off the carom, and he's tangled at the 4-yard line.
01:05:27Can you say Greg Freeman?
01:05:30Remember that catch last year? That's right.
01:05:33The flag is down.
01:05:36Back at the line of scrimmage.
01:05:39Oh, and the Patriots are, I think,
01:05:42breathing a colossal sigh of relief here.
01:05:46The illegal block.
01:05:49Looks like we're going to get a chop block, maybe.
01:05:52But look at this play by Coles
01:05:55after we straighten this out.
01:05:58A remarkable catch for Nott.
01:06:01And really, it was good coverage by Terrell Buckley.
01:06:04Personal foul. Chop block.
01:06:07Number 28 offense. 15-yard penalty.
01:06:10Still first down.
01:06:13Well, they're calling Curtis Martin for a chop block.
01:06:16Let's look over
01:06:19on the right side of the offensive line,
01:06:22the left side of our screen.
01:06:25He was already engaged by another blocker.
01:06:28Yes. Here's the catch at the very end.
01:06:31Look how he flicked it. Look at Coles. Watch his right hand.
01:06:34Watch it when he goes down. He's going to reach out right here.
01:06:37Look how he flicks the ball right back to him
01:06:40with his right hand. Boy, that is sensational concentration.
01:06:43Unfortunately for the Jets, it doesn't count.
01:06:46You can't make contact with a player when he's being engaged
01:06:49by another player. And Curtis Martin
01:06:52got the flag.
01:06:5540-45 and almost to midfield.
01:06:58And another solid carry by this
01:07:0128-year-old who didn't play football
01:07:04until a senior in high school. And his mother said,
01:07:07just the opposite of a lot of moms. They said,
01:07:10you're going to play football. I want you to get in some activity
01:07:13where you stay out of trouble.
01:07:16And he had a sensational senior year and, of course,
01:07:19some great seasons at the University of Pittsburgh.
01:07:22Two-minute timeout with the Patriots leading 3-0.
01:07:25And welcome back
01:07:28to Foxboro. The Patriots leading.
01:07:31And Dan, this is the longest drive for the Jets.
01:07:34Well, and they've really not had good field position
01:07:37here in the second quarter at all. Let's see if they can overcome the adversity.
01:07:40Right there, we're going to see the chop block.
01:07:43Look, see Curtis Martin, but that's actually
01:07:46Anthony Beck, number 88, who's the one who's down low.
01:07:49Yes, you can't do what Curtis Martin did
01:07:52and hit a guy when he's already engaged. But Beck was the one
01:07:55who was below the waist. There's Martin again
01:07:58weaving his way through tacklers and down to the 43-yard line
01:08:01where it'll be third down and four. Bobby Hamilton made the stop.
01:08:04The ex-Jet. A reminder, the Nextel
01:08:07halftime report coming up. Jim, Mike, Randy, Jerry
01:08:10scores highlights in the latest NFL news
01:08:13plus a CBS News update. And on this
01:08:16second week of the NFL season, some
01:08:19surprising scores. And they'll have all
01:08:22the details.
01:08:25Big fall here. Third and four with Anderson and Martin
01:08:28split behind Testaverde.
01:08:31More yards in this drive than combined in the first half.
01:08:34The others. Wide open is Anthony Beck, the tight end
01:08:37and he has the first down at the 30-yard line of the Patriots.
01:08:40Make it the 29, Ty Law
01:08:43with the hit. Well, everybody says that
01:08:46Vinny Testaverde, you know he's had the Achilles surgery, but
01:08:49yet he still moves well enough to get out there and
01:08:52do something like this. He's got two Patriots after him.
01:08:56Bobby Hamilton, the defensive end, kind of caught really
01:08:59in a position whether to rush Testaverde or whether to drop back.
01:09:02But Vinny still has enough left in those
01:09:05pins to get out there and still get in space and make
01:09:08something happen and deliver a good ball. Beck's first catch
01:09:11today at four in game one.
01:09:14Seven for ten throwing is Testaverde this
01:09:17first half from the 29. Wide
01:09:20open as Coles.
01:09:24Flag down. That might be a personal foul
01:09:27on the Patriots. Terrell
01:09:30Buckley.
01:09:33Might have gotten a piece of the face mask.
01:09:41Or a late hit. Personal foul.
01:09:44Number 26 defense. Unnecessary roughness.
01:09:47Half the distance to the goal.
01:09:51They're going to say that Stevens made the hit
01:09:54out of bounds. Buckley
01:09:57had pushed him out of bounds. Let's go ahead and take a look at
01:10:00Coles. He's working on Buckley. He's out of bounds there.
01:10:03And Stevens comes in and delivers the blow. Now
01:10:06let's see how far out of bounds he was. One step.
01:10:09One step. He makes contact with the
01:10:12helmet. He leads with his hat.
01:10:15That was something that probably had as much to do
01:10:18with it as anything else. He made contact on a receiver
01:10:21with his helmet first. In this league
01:10:24that is no longer acceptable. First and goal.
01:10:27The full ten yards to go for the Jets with 109
01:10:30left in this first half.
01:10:33Testaverde throws the ball down.
01:10:36Was that intercepted with alignment on the ground?
01:10:39How could that happen? Oh my.
01:10:42Richard Seymour
01:10:45the rookie on the ground and Testaverde
01:10:48trying to down the ball or perhaps a
01:10:51fumble showing there was an incomplete pass and Seymour
01:10:54caught it. Well Larry Nemers never signaled
01:10:57that it was a pass. He never signaled that his arm
01:11:00was going forward. Vinny has to realize
01:11:03that backside pressure is going to come sooner or later.
01:11:06Now we did see. It's a fumble.
01:11:09We saw Vinny's arm move at the end and he's going to make his case.
01:11:13Now keep in mind we're inside the two minutes
01:11:16of the half. So any question about a replay
01:11:19the decision will be made upstairs in the replay
01:11:22booth. And they're going to review it. Oh they've got to take a look
01:11:25at this. But again remember this isn't called
01:11:28for by the coach. I thought he caught it cleanly and
01:11:31the ball goes off one of the Jets
01:11:34players and it was Seymour who recovered
01:11:37what would be ruled a fumble if that's how the play stands.
01:11:40That's a good angle right there guys. If we could look at that
01:11:43it almost looked like Vinny's arm was moving forward
01:11:46before the ball came out. His arm got hit.
01:11:49Anthony Pleasant the defensive line
01:11:55That one's not a real definitive look.
01:11:58And keep in mind anytime
01:12:01we're in a review situation. This one right here.
01:12:05Oh I think his arm started falling.
01:12:08I think that look right there
01:12:11would be the look that Larry Nemers is going to see
01:12:14and rule that an incomplete pass.
01:12:17I think of all the looks we have that's the one
01:12:20that's pretty definitive. Keep in mind now the ruling on the field
01:12:23was that it's the Patriots football
01:12:26on a fumble by Testaverde. So he asked Larry
01:12:29Nemers our referee must see
01:12:33visual evidence that is conclusive.
01:12:36Right here again. Yeah I think his arm started forward.
01:12:39Didn't get forward very much but it was
01:12:42in the action of moving forward. I think that the Jets
01:12:45will keep the football here. I think that's the look
01:12:48right there guys. It's going forward
01:12:51and the defensive player's hand is right on his throwing hand
01:12:54Anthony Pleasant and so he couldn't follow through.
01:12:57Excellent look at it right there.
01:13:03Got 61 seconds left in this first half.
01:13:06Three nothing Patriots and the Jets with their best
01:13:09scoring opportunity.
01:13:12Now in the hands of
01:13:15the replay judge.
01:13:18Testaverde he instantly started to plead his
01:13:21case.
01:13:24Come on Larry my arm was moving forward.
01:13:27Now then he would say that
01:13:30even if his arm wasn't moving forward. So I don't think
01:13:33Larry put a whole lot of stock in what
01:13:36he was saying right there. Considerable time examining the
01:13:39replays isn't it. Flags are everywhere. Did you see the flags
01:13:42there on the on the hood that
01:13:45look at that. When you drive into the stadiums today
01:13:48it I wish everybody could see it in
01:13:51person. All the tailgates going on every
01:13:54car with flags people waving flags
01:13:57patient about the security measures
01:14:00goodwill. I mean there was just a it was
01:14:03it had you
01:14:06weakened in the knees just watching and observing
01:14:09our fellow men and women and how they the
01:14:12rallying effect of all of this. If I had to pick one
01:14:15word it would be pride. Indeed.
01:14:18Very very proud.
01:14:21Well back to business.
01:14:24This is very important.
01:14:27After reviewing the play the quarterback's arm was
01:14:30coming forward before he was hit and the ball was out.
01:14:33Therefore it's an incomplete pass.
01:14:36That's why we have replay folks.
01:14:39That's why we have replay to correct an error.
01:14:42And that was an error on the field and this is good work by everybody involved.
01:14:45Most definitely Vinny Testiberti's arm was coming forward
01:14:48before Anthony Pleasant hit him right on the forearm
01:14:51and jarred it loose. So it's an incomplete
01:14:54pass back to the line of scrimmage which
01:14:57is the 10 yard line
01:15:00and it'll be second and 10 second and
01:15:03goal from the 10 87 yards. Remember
01:15:06this drive began after the interception
01:15:09by Aaron Glenn at the Jets three yard line
01:15:13Jets have not succeeded
01:15:16in that red zone.
01:15:19Martin
01:15:22and he gets only a couple.
01:15:25So that'll bring up a third and goal. I think he ran into
01:15:28his old buddy Brian Cox.
01:15:31Brian was just sitting in the middle waiting.
01:15:34What did Brian tell us about Curtis Martin. He said hey
01:15:37he's a cool guy. He's a great guy.
01:15:40Stay home. He will come back.
01:15:43It may look like he's leaving but he will
01:15:46come back.
01:15:52Third and goal.
01:15:55Outside the eight yard line.
01:16:03Swings it to Martin.
01:16:06No game.
01:16:10The Patriots were all over that.
01:16:13When Curtis Martin flares out of the backfield like that
01:16:16shame on any New England defender that would lose track
01:16:19of him. Curtis flares out and three guys
01:16:22went with it. Anthony Pleasant defensive tackle
01:16:25Ted Johnson. Timeout Herman Edwards
01:16:28with three seconds and he just got the time
01:16:31to get that field goal unit on. Jets try to
01:16:34tie it at the half. We'll be right back.
01:16:39I wrote this song on the back of a Dixie cup.
01:16:44Money talks
01:16:47but it don't sing and dance and it don't
01:16:50walk. As long
01:16:53as I can have you here with me
01:16:56I'd much rather be
01:16:59forever in blue jeans. I'm in blue jeans.
01:17:02Do you get it? Forever in
01:17:05blue jeans babe.
01:17:10Back in Foxboro the Jets are preparing to
01:17:13try a short field goal to tie it up. Next they'll direct
01:17:16contact halftime report coming up. All the scores and highlights
01:17:19earlier games plus a CBS News report. John
01:17:22Hall kicked a short one last week. 22 yards.
01:17:25This one will be 26.
01:17:33And right down the middle.
01:17:36First half comes to an end.
01:17:39Two short field goals. The only connections.
01:17:42The Bledsoe led Patriots
01:17:45three and the Testaverde long drive to tie
01:17:48the three. Let's go to Bonnie. Well Dick we saw a pretty
01:17:51forceful Patriots ground game. Herman how do you adjust defensively?
01:17:54Well I think they're doing a great job on us.
01:17:57We've made some big plays but when we make a big play it seems like
01:18:00we shoot ourselves in the foot and we make a mistake.
01:18:03That's what the first half has been. The good thing about it we've got it 3-3
01:18:06now and hopefully we can come out and play better the second half.
01:18:09Quite a contrast to the 69
01:18:12point score the first week of the season when
01:18:15Indy beat the Jets 45-24. That's the end of the first
01:18:18half tied at three. Coming up next the next still
01:18:21halftime report.
01:18:34Welcome back. Ready for the second half and John Hall to kick it off.
01:18:37Deep for the Patriots. Kevin Faulk
01:18:40the second year man from LSU.
01:18:43Faulk who
01:18:46had such a brilliant career with the Bayou Tigers
01:18:49all purpose yards.
01:18:52And Hall sends it deep.
01:18:55Oh he got all of that one. Five yards deep
01:18:58we're going to take it out.
01:19:02And the gamble doesn't pay off. 17 yard line is where
01:19:05the Patriots will begin.
01:19:08Pleased that you joined us in Foxboro. The Patriots season opener
01:19:11and we look ahead to the rest of what should be a terrific year
01:19:14and I almost have the feeling that that first 30 minutes
01:19:17players were just getting themselves back into a certain rhythm.
01:19:20Second half more scoring perhaps? Perhaps.
01:19:23Anything's understandable when it comes to the quality of play.
01:19:26And let's go ahead and take a look at the halftime stats and you see that the Jets
01:19:29with a hundred.
