00:00:00I think one thing it's important to know, Don, is that the Broncos bounced back after
00:00:04a very slow start.
00:00:06And now they've played the last half of the first quarter and the second quarter very
00:00:11tough.
00:00:12Talking about Brady, and Brady said of Greasy, you'll never find anybody mentally tougher
00:00:17than Brian Greasy.
00:00:18Greasy said of Brady, the reason his team wins is because he doesn't make mistakes.
00:00:23Here he goes into a fifth straight game without making mistakes.
00:00:26He's yet to throw an interception since he's been started.
00:00:27Terrific kickoff out of the end zone by Adam Venateri, a guy who kicks at long range at
00:00:38ground level.
00:00:39What happens in the second half is they come out, these are the first half numbers for
00:00:43both those guys.
00:00:44In the second half, I think you're getting an idea of how good the coaching staffs for
00:00:48both these teams are.
00:00:49This is when you make adjustments, and that's when a coaching staff, I believe, Don, really
00:00:53earns its salaries.
00:00:54They have to make adjustments on the fly during a game to give their team a chance to win.
00:01:03Greasy goes to Anderson, they still have not generated the power running game consistently
00:01:08they wanted.
00:01:09Anderson with only 33 yards and 10 carries in the first half, but you want to see a wild
00:01:14play, one that we, I don't know if it'll go in the time capsule, it certainly makes tonight's
00:01:18highlight reel.
00:01:19Watch this.
00:01:20Now this is a quick slam from Greasy to Smith, and it gets popped up, batted twice.
00:01:25Teddy Bruschi catches it, tries to switch hands, pops out, goes to the sidelines, he
00:01:29tries to recover, misses, then Brian Greasy jumps on it, he grabs it, fumbles it down
00:01:32to his legs.
00:01:33To go back to live action again, the Patriot defenders put up a stone wall against the
00:01:39running game of Mike Anderson, Anthony Pleasant, and Bobby Hamilton on the stop.
00:01:45Now that last play we showed you with the double fumble, this is the end of it as the
00:01:48ball comes out, and you'll see it right there, down in Greasy's legs, and then as they get
00:01:53going, they start pulling and pushing, watch the umpire, watch him right there, Andre Wash
00:01:58comes in, during the aftermath, Greasy kicked him somehow, some way, not intentionally,
00:02:04but it doesn't really matter, and he got a personal foul, which gave New England a chance
00:02:08to score.
00:02:09So now third down, an open backfield, four wide receivers, Greasy timing, oh, he's picked
00:02:14off!
00:02:15Stevens picks it up for the Patriots, takes it inside the 25 yard line, and his wisdom
00:02:21gets out of bounds before the ball can be knocked free, he sees what happens to defenders
00:02:25who try to run with it.
00:02:26Yeah, and we just saw Teddy Bruschi in the first half cough that up, Matt Stevens judiciously
00:02:31just runs out of bounds and makes sure his team ends the play with the ball, Brian Greasy
00:02:35throws this out, and right there you see he threw to the inside, and Rod Smith, or that
00:02:40was actually Desmond Clark, moved to the outside for the first time, Desmond Clark
00:02:45right here, he's been working him all day, you see there, a little push-pull there, and
00:02:51Matt Stevens gets the better of it.
00:02:55Greasy now with seven interceptions in his last two and, last three games, five in the
00:03:01previous two.
00:03:02Here is a handoff, and Antoine Smith drives, and Broncos defenders in ill humor throw him
00:03:10back, led by Bill Romanowski, the 14 year veteran from Boston College, who's in unbelievable
00:03:17condition and has no intentions of retiring, has never missed a game on any level going
00:03:22back to Pee-wee football.
00:03:23He's a leader, that's a guy that everybody looks to as an emotional spark plug, a guy
00:03:29that's always going to be there, always going to be emotionally ready to play, and he brings
00:03:32guys with him in that.
00:03:39Brady with a lone back on second down and nine.
00:03:43Blitzers are coming, corner blitz is coming, Brady, dumps it off, he screens it beautifully,
00:03:48and on the run inside the 20 yard line is Kevin Faulk, but another very good defensive
00:03:54play, saved possibly a touchdown, is Kanhoye Kennedy, the strong safety.
00:03:59We talk about this Bronco defense, it all starts with their linebackers, and Romanowski's
00:04:03the guy who's been around the block in the NFL, but look at all the games, all the way
00:04:07back in 1976, all the way through 01 in the NFL, never missed a game at Pop Warner High
00:04:13School College in the NFL.
00:04:14I don't know how good the Shamrocks were, but at least they had a pretty good middle
00:04:19linebacker.
00:04:20Yeah, he certainly blossomed now in his 14th year, but Romanowski and the Bronco defenders
00:04:26up against it now, this is the third down, a long four needed, and on the run is Brady
00:04:32and a penalty marker is thrown as Brady gets down to the 15 yard line, short of the first
00:04:37down.
00:04:38Taken down by Keith Washington.
00:04:39Yeah, you're right, Dines, it's going to be interesting, I think they're going to take
00:04:43the penalty and push him back further, it's a hold on the offensive line there, deep in
00:04:47the backfield.
00:04:48Do you make him go fourth down, and make him the entire field goal, or do you give Brady
00:04:51another chance?
00:04:52I might take Brady off the field and decline the penalty.
00:04:56Walt Coleman waiting to get the signal from the defense.
00:05:00Holding, 63, offense, 10 yard penalty, 15 third down.
00:05:08Goes from third and four to third and 14, you'll see.
00:05:15Trevor Price right there, that's the hold right up there in the top is Brady.
00:05:18Yeah, Andrewsie.
00:05:19Yeah, Andrewsie.
00:05:20A good quarterback.
00:05:21Clamped on Chester McLaughlin there.
00:05:25Andrewsie, the New Yorker, whose brothers are firefighters, they said he's been a tremendous
00:05:29inspirational leader for the Patriots.
00:05:31Bill Belichick signaled him out, and Ted Johnson for guys that don't get a lot of credit for
00:05:38what they do for their team.
00:05:39And here now is Brady, play fake, and he's looking at the end zone, buying time with
00:05:43his feet.
00:05:44Got a channel to run, now he throws it near side, and there's not much place for Charles
00:05:49Johnson to go, as he's taken down on a great open field tackle by Denard Walker, 27, who's
00:05:55a very expensive free agent.
00:05:57A very good corner was with the Tennessee Titans.
00:06:04Brings up fourth down as Brian Greasy contemplates what's next.
00:06:07And after throwing that interception, at least his defense held the Patriots to a three point
00:06:11attempt here.
00:06:13Bennett Terry, a long range kicker, he's hit four field goals over 50 yards in the last
00:06:18three seasons for the Patriots, all at ground level.
00:06:21This is a 44 yarder, he'll boom it.
00:06:25He kicks it way over the top, and let's see, it is ruled up and good.
00:06:30Gets it inside the upright, so Bennett Terry continues his excellent kicking, and the Patriots
00:06:35for a second time in this game have a ten point lead.
00:06:42The Patriots hitting a 44 yard field goal off the foot of Bennett Terry, he now kicks off
00:06:46a high spinning kick, and here comes Chris Cole up with the ball.
00:06:53Bounce across the 20 and the 30, a lightning quick return and brings the ball out to the
00:06:5835 yard line.
00:07:00He's taken down, and let's see, it's going to be a 33 yard return on the play.
00:07:09The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Southwest Airlines.
00:07:14Proud sponsor of the NFL, and official airline of Super Bowl 36.
00:07:19PS1, wherever, whenever, forever.
00:07:23And by Chrysler.
00:07:25Drive equals love.
00:07:32Water flows outside in Vesco Field at Mile High, inside the home Pouncos are now in need
00:07:37of some big plays, down by ten points in the third quarter.
00:07:42Brian Greasy, they're going to look downfield, throws it out beautifully, and Roch Smith
00:07:46is on the run, he's going to go the distance.
00:07:49Roch Smith is going to take it all the way down and go into the end zone on a spectacular
00:07:53play, a 65 yard scoring play, as Greasy and Smith get seven back quick if they make the
00:08:00extra points.
00:08:06This is why Brian Greasy is such a good quarterback, he bounces back from the bad interception
00:08:10he just threw, finds his go-to guy, stands in the pocket, and goes for a touchdown.
00:08:16Well, as yesterday, Steve, when we talked to Bill Belichick, he said, nobody's better
00:08:20than Shanahan at attacking your defense, making you make adjustments, showing you new things
00:08:26all the time, he said you have to be ready for everything, and the Patriot defenders
00:08:30weren't ready for that, as Smith today has five catches for 138 yards and a touchdown.
00:08:37Extra point up and good, so this shootout continues, as the Broncos again rally back
00:08:42on the most spectacular play of this game.
00:08:45Down by three, they'll kick off when we come back.
00:08:53Welcome back to Denver, as the touchdown horse on the ride again.
00:08:59Thunder.
00:09:00Thunder has his own stall out there.
00:09:03Stadium has everything, doesn't it?
00:09:05Even the stall for Thunder as the kickoff comes down, and here comes Kevin Faulk from
00:09:09the 8-yard line.
00:09:11Goes cut back moves, he works his way, and gets across the 25-yard line.
00:09:18First and 10 through the Patriots.
00:09:20Saturday, Josh Reed and the LSU Tigers tangle with Tyler Watts in the crimson tide of Alabama.
00:09:26The action begins with Tim Brando and Spencer Tillman in college football today.
00:09:31For more college football news, go to cbs.sportsline.com.
00:09:35AOL keyword, CBS Sportsline.
00:09:39Well, Drew Bledsoe's on the phone now, getting words from on high with the offensive coaches
00:09:44in the box.
00:09:45See, while on the field, Tom Brady, who's hit 15 of 18 throws, 127 yards, two touchdowns,
00:09:52no interceptions.
00:09:54Pitch back, and on the run, breaking it is Antoine Smith, and he's out across the 40
00:09:59yard line.
00:10:00Your former teammate with the Bills, what are his strengths?
00:10:03Well, that right there, his speed is his strength.
00:10:06He doesn't have much lateral mobility, doesn't have much juke in the hole, but once he turns
00:10:10his shoulders up, he can go.
00:10:12And you see there, that's Trey Teague right there, I believe, that went down.
00:10:18I think it's Matt Light, the left tackle.
00:10:20Oh, there you go, Matt Light.
00:10:22Matt Light, the guy, rookie from Purdue, his last four years, he's been protecting the
00:10:28blind side of Drew Brees now at the San Diego Chargers, but Matt Light being attended to
00:10:34by trainer O'Neal and team orthopedist Zarens, Dr. Zarens.
00:10:40You watch, there he is right there, obviously, looks like it got him on the elbow.
00:10:47So, Matt Light and some discomfort on the field, and the play is stopped.
00:10:51You don't need to lose your left tackle at this point.
00:10:56This is one of the things that Bill Belichick has said.
00:10:58He's got an offensive line that seems to be getting better because they've been together
00:11:02now for five or six weeks, and that's been the difference.
00:11:05Good to see Matt getting up, but it seems to have some problems with that right arm.
00:11:10Ready to go as we come back to Invesco Field.
00:11:13We'll be right back.
00:11:39Field a mile high with the Patriots with the ball.
00:11:43Leading the game is from the shotgun now on first and ten, Tom Brady sets himself.
00:11:50First look from the shotgun, quick timing pattern, a wide receiver screen, Detroit Brown
00:11:55setting up the blockers quickly, does get about four yards.
00:11:59Of the surprise teams this year, which one has the best chance of going the distance?
00:12:04The Bears, who won an unbelievable comeback game today.
00:12:07The Bengals, who won again at Detroit.
00:12:09The Browns, who are playing sensationally.
00:12:11The Chargers, the 49ers, or the Steelers?
00:12:14I'd say the Steelers.
00:12:15Just walk out and cast your vote at NFL.com.
00:12:18Steelers have the number one running game, the number one defense, and a kick you can
00:12:22kick it from a mile out.
00:12:26Pitch back to Antoine Smith.
00:12:27They don't get much, and now Troy Brown is shaking up a bit.
00:12:30What a player he's been.
00:12:31He was an eighth round draft choice.
00:12:33He came out the same year that Drew Bledsoe was drafted number one in the whole league.
00:12:37Yeah, you can see there, he's getting right back in the game, too.
00:12:41You can bet that Tom Brady's breathing a sigh of relief there as his go-to guy comes in.
00:12:47Troy Brown played for the thundering herd of Marshall, and he can really throw the ball
00:12:51as well as catch it.
00:12:54Brady, on third down, steps in, makes a throw, and it's taken in unbelievably by Brown,
00:12:59who goes way up, a fingertip grab.
00:13:02Still shaking up, and somehow he makes yet another play, right between the two starting
00:13:06corners, O'Neal and Walker.
00:13:08And that's the NFL, Don.
00:13:09That guy, Brown comes off the bench after being shaken up, and makes a crucial third
00:13:13down catch in traffic, and takes the shot from three guys around him.
00:13:18That's why a quarterback throws some guys the ball more than others right there, Don.
00:13:23It's an 11-yard game.
00:13:25Troy Brown has caught eight for 70 yards and a touchdown.
00:13:29Bobble ball, it's on the field, and Brady falls on it.
00:13:33John Mobley was on him quickly.
00:13:36Well, there it is, Don.
00:13:38First mistake he's made in five weeks, fumbled in the snap.
00:13:42And he got the ball back.
00:13:43And he got the ball back.
00:13:44Brady told us it's almost easier quarterbacking in the NFL for him because he has the option
00:13:48to adjust and call audibles, instead of Michigan, you called the play this coach sent in,
00:13:52didn't change it.
00:13:53Yeah, and that's, it was interesting, he says, it's amazing to me how much is at my disposal
00:13:57as an NFL quarterback.
00:13:58I can change the protection, I can change the adjustments, there's so many things I
00:14:02can do, and for a guy who's smart and prepared, wow, he's tough to defend.
00:14:06And his numbers are magnificent.
00:14:09He has his team in the lead.
00:14:12Right now, 20-17 game, Brady stands in another screen nearside and beautifully diagnosed
00:14:20to go to J.I. Redman and Chester McLaughlin, the first time we've called his name all day,
00:14:25but he really snuffs it out.
00:14:28And ends that play quickly for a substantial loss, all the way back to the 49-yard line
00:14:33of the Patriots.
00:14:34Well, Chester McLaughlin has been in the Pro Bowl because of things like this, he's a little
00:14:38bit more inconsistent at this point in his career, but Chester is a guy that, when he's
00:14:43there for him to turn on and he flips the switch, he's tough to attack, man, that guy's
00:14:49got it all.
00:14:52He's a power, 334 pounds, third down, hitting a long yardage, the first sack of the day
00:15:03as the Bronco defense rises up.
00:15:06Led by Trevor Price, 93, and Bertrand Berry, 92.
00:15:11So all of a sudden, the momentum of this game has changed dramatically, and Bill Belichick
00:15:15knows that better than any of us, after he saw the 65-yard pass play for a touchdown
00:15:21last time that the Broncos had the ball.
00:15:23Yeah, the momentum has definitely switched, even though the Broncos are trailing by three
00:15:27at this point, the game is in their hands, there's no question, they've got it.
00:15:31Ken Walter in to punt the ball.
00:15:35New punter, Lee Johnson, was waived after the San Diego game, and here is the punt hit
00:15:41down, and Terram's into the end zone, to Bucky Jones, unable to keep it out.
00:15:45So it goes for 54 yards, but 20 comes off on a touchback, net yardage 34.
00:15:52First down, Broncos, and we come back.
00:15:55Last four possessions for the Broncos, see how it's gone for them.
00:15:58Now this is the most recent one, obviously the touchdown, but the momentum has swung
00:16:02definitely in their favor.
00:16:05Gracie got his best field position on the previous possession, and capitalized right
00:16:09away with a 65-yard pass play for a touchdown.
00:16:12He's going for the distance again, long ball, Kinnison off his fingertips.
00:16:17Eddie Kinnison, the fastest Bronco receiver.
00:16:20Eddie Kinnison, the fastest Bronco receiver.
00:16:23But a man who has, at times, the ability to make a spectacular catch, and then the ability
00:16:28to drop a perfectly thrown ball, like that.
00:16:30I'll tell you what, Don, I'll tell you what everybody on the sidelines in this stadium
00:16:33is thinking.
00:16:34Ed McCaffrey doesn't drop this ball.
00:16:37I don't think Ed McCaffrey gets out that far, he did that fast.
00:16:40That's nothing against Eddie Kinnison, but that's exactly what people are thinking, and
00:16:44Brian Gracie needed his receiver to make a play for him on that.
00:16:47If they do that and make that play, this game may well be over.
00:16:51We're a long way from over, though, I think, in this one.
00:16:53We're going down to the final gun.
00:16:56Handoff.
00:16:57Breaking it, for the moment, is Olandis Gary.
00:17:00Big back, out of Georgia.
00:17:02Putting his other backs in the lower round.
00:17:04Mike Anderson, the starter, a sixth-round draft choice.
00:17:07Olandis Gary, a fourth-rounder.
00:17:08Jarrell Davis was a sixth-rounder.
00:17:11Long position to the 24-yard line, Steve.
00:17:13I think when you see a team do that, when they get those guys, those consistently great
00:17:16guys in the late rounds, you have to kind of think, maybe they're looking for something
00:17:19different than everybody else is.
00:17:21And maybe they have a good offensive line.
00:17:24That's been a bit of an undersized line, but great scheme blocking as the passer then
00:17:29goes out.
00:17:30Still on the run.
00:17:31He was not touching the officials running with him.
00:17:33This play is live.
00:17:34Desmond Clark.
00:17:35Not college football.
00:17:36When your knees go down, if the defender doesn't touch you, you can keep going.
00:17:40And he did.
00:17:41As Clark runs the quick out, Greasy's going to find him.
00:17:44And Desmond Clark has been involved in this game plan today more so than any other thing,
00:17:50any other game this year.
00:17:51And he's making the most of it.
00:17:53And you saw the defender go right over the top of it.
00:17:56And he's making the most of it.
00:17:59And he's making the most of it.
00:18:01And you saw the defender go right over the top of him.
00:18:04Right there, Matt Stephens jumps over, never touches him.
00:18:07Clark gets up and that's smart heads up play.
00:18:10Was that.
00:18:11The former quarterback.
00:18:12A 35 yard gain on the play.
00:18:15He got 25 yards after he fell down.
00:18:18Here's a long ball.
00:18:19Receiver open but unable to come in with the ball as Keith Poole was the deep man.
00:18:25No penalty marker coming.
00:18:27To the dismay of the Broncos fans.
00:18:29I thought they had a penalty coming as well.
00:18:32Terrence Shaw's got the coverage on Poole and watch as they come out.
00:18:38Now Terrence Shaw can do anything he wants as long as he looks for the football.
00:18:41But he's not looking in there.
00:18:43You see him.
00:18:44He's pushing against him.
00:18:45Then his eyes come back.
00:18:46That's not quite as bad as it looked from up here.
00:18:48Kenneth Poole also pushes off, tries to come back for the ball.
00:18:52That's probably a good no call, Don.
00:18:54It's like a fair fight for the ball.
00:18:56Yeah, that's no reason for a flag there.
00:18:59Second down, but Greasy's looking to get it in big chunks.
00:19:02Here's a quick hit.
00:19:03Going over and this is Rod Smith on the runner.
00:19:06And he breaks through the Patriot defense and gets inside the 20 yard line.
00:19:11A lot of screams.
00:19:12Wide receiver screams.
00:19:14Tight end screams.
00:19:16And a Patriot is now down.
00:19:18Brian Cox.
00:19:20Yeah, Brian Cox down on the field.
00:19:22We've seen that a lot, Don.
00:19:23You're exactly right.
00:19:24The quarterback will step back and just throw it to the wide guy right off the bat.
00:19:27Brian Cox.
00:19:29I'll tell you what.
00:19:30I've seen him play for 12 years.
00:19:32I've never seen him stay down on a football field.
00:19:35Well, he was talking yesterday when we met with him about some of the hits he's seen you make.
00:19:38When he was with Miami, his teammate, Marco Coleman, who's a defensive end,
00:19:42said when you hit him, his head was where his feet should have been.
00:19:46He got a clean shot.
00:19:48That's right.
00:19:49Well, there were some battles going on.
00:19:51But Brian Cox is a guy who Bill Belichick picked up,
00:19:54who played for him in New York when he was with the Jets,
00:19:56and now Brian Cox is the guy.
00:19:58Brian's ankle might be on it.
00:19:59Yes.
00:20:00He had some interesting observations about his own career.
00:20:02He said he's more valuable now as a leader than he is on the field,
00:20:05but he's been very important to this Patriot team.
00:20:08You watch down here.
00:20:09And Laura right there just got caught.
00:20:12And, oh, that's not good.
00:20:16His foot came over the top of his leg.
00:20:18He's up, though.
00:20:19Yeah.
00:20:21That's good to see.
00:20:22That is not good.
00:20:23That was not a pretty thing to see.
00:20:25But Brian Cox is a guy.
00:20:26He's one of those guys when you play against him, Don, you hate him.
00:20:30You can't stand him.
00:20:31But secretly, you wish he was on your team.
00:20:34Yeah.
00:20:35Fun guy.
00:20:36He came into our meeting with a shirt and tie, gold tie
00:20:38and gold shirt of silk that are worth more than my car.
00:20:43Monday on CBS, spend Halloween with the King of Queens.
00:20:46It's an episode so funny, it's scary.
00:20:49Monday on CBS.
00:20:51So the ball is, I think Cox is looking now to get a submarine,
00:20:54but it didn't look like there was any intent to it.
00:20:57It looked like it was going to be fairly innocuous,
00:21:00but when his foot got caught underneath him, then the injury happened.
00:21:07First down, Reesey, pump faking to the end zone,
00:21:10lops the ball, and he indeed continues to go to Desmond Clark.
00:21:15And it's incomplete.
00:21:16And Tebucky Jones had the defense on him, and he just didn't bite.
00:21:20It was an out and up by Desmond Clark.
00:21:22He ran the quick out like he's caught three or four times.
00:21:25Then he turned back up the field, and Tebucky Jones wanted no part of it.
00:21:30Mike Shanahan knows it was close.
00:21:35What a winner he's been.
00:21:36You want to talk about living and dying with every snap.
00:21:38Especially on his offensive side of the ball, he is one of the best.
00:21:43A man who knows how to win football games.
00:21:46Back-to-back Super Bowl wins.
00:21:48Here is the handoff, and running high with the ball,
00:21:51and Olamdis Gary takes on the Patriot defenders.
00:21:54New England's had problems stopping the run this season,
00:21:58and it's in evidence there.
00:22:00I think one of the things that New England does have kind of a reputation
00:22:04for being soft against the run, but one of the reasons is,
00:22:06especially in the past few weeks, they've been ahead
00:22:10and have not really had a team try and pound it out on the ground.
00:22:14So they're kind of protecting a lead.
00:22:16They're playing soft.
00:22:17They're letting them run the game and let the clock go.
00:22:19So I think that might be a little bit of a misnomer that they're soft
00:22:21against the run.
00:22:23Interesting formation now.
00:22:24Five players deployed as wideouts.
00:22:26One comes in motion.
00:22:27This is Olamdis Gary.
00:22:29Open backfield, and now a timeout is signaled.
00:22:35And the Patriots are the ones who call it.
00:22:37Broncos have never led in this game.
00:22:39They were down 10-0, tied at 10-10, down 17-10 at halftime,
00:22:43then down 20-10, now down by three.
00:22:46Tonight after 60 Minutes, what do you tell your child
00:22:49when he asks one of life's biggest questions?
00:22:51Don't miss an all-new Education of Max Bickford
00:22:54tonight after 60 Minutes here on CBS.
00:23:00Opposition just outside the 10-yard line.
00:23:03That's probably a smart timeout by the Patriots.
00:23:05When you're down on your own 10-yard line and the offense is coming in,
00:23:08you just don't want to be uncertain defensively,
00:23:12especially with a three-point lead.
00:23:16We talked, Steve, about the Broncos scoring problems.
00:23:18They're averaging almost 35 points a game
00:23:21and winning their first two against the Giants in Arizona.
00:23:24In the previous subsequent four games, they've allowed
00:23:27and scored only 16 points a game, and now they're looking to
00:23:30perhaps take the lead for the first time as Greasy on third and one
00:23:33has an interesting play call.
00:23:35I think one of the things that's happened to them is their running game
00:23:37has evaporated, and I think Brian Greasy's numbers reflect that.
00:23:40He's been trying to win games by himself.
00:23:42He fakes so well.
00:23:43He freezes the defense.
00:23:46This time he gives on the run, and Olandis Gary goes right at it.
00:23:49Great trap block up the middle.
00:23:52Brings a gap.
00:23:53Ed Johnson makes the tackle, but he makes it at the 6-yard line.
00:23:56First and goal, Broncos.
00:23:58Brandon Mitchell almost had Olandis Gary right in the backfield
00:24:02for no gain.
00:24:03Watch as he comes right here.
00:24:06Just misses him.
00:24:07Gary makes the slight sidestep and gets the first down.
00:24:11Great running.
00:24:13Excellent defensive play as well, but it just didn't turn out
00:24:15for the Patriots.
00:24:17Nailing the four-time pro bowler, making big blocks.
00:24:20Here's the throw and the catch, and the Broncos take the lead.
00:24:26Dwayne Carswell.
00:24:36His second catch of the day is a big one.
00:24:416-yard touchdown, and now they have the extra point man up
00:24:45to try the point after Jason Elam.
00:24:48That really makes this game interesting, Don.
00:24:52Ben Greasy showed great poise in bouncing back from two
00:24:55interceptions.
00:24:56Now can the young guy, Tom Brady, answer?
00:24:59Elam kicks the extra point up and good.
00:25:03And so for the first time today on their home field, the Broncos,
00:25:06who have lost two straight and three of their last four,
00:25:09have taken the lead.
00:25:11Starts with a play fake once again, and the first catch by
00:25:14Dwayne Carswell today is a touchdown.
00:25:17Forget all about him.
00:25:19Bowing deeply from the waist.
00:25:21That's right.
00:25:22Thank you very much for that lovely touchdown.
00:25:26I agree.
00:25:27You talked about Greasy's play fakes, and that was another one.
00:25:30He frees people up.
00:25:32You know, he learned that at South Florida from his father.
00:25:35It was interesting.
00:25:36We talked to Tom Brady.
00:25:37He told Greasy on the phone, he was live, he says,
00:25:39don't try that bootleg stuff on us this week.
00:25:41Well, there you saw it for the touchdown.
00:25:43I'm sure Greasy will say, nanny, nanny, boo-boo on you.
00:25:47I just did it.
00:25:48We've only just begun, though.
00:25:503.35 to go in the third quarter.
00:25:52Four touchdowns to come in this game,
00:25:55and Brady jabbed at the bid to get his next chance at offense.
00:26:01LeBron goes with two 80-yard touchdown drives today
00:26:04and a 17-play field goal drive.
00:26:11Jason Aylin ready to kick off.
00:26:13Kevin Faulkner, a dangerous return man,
00:26:16heading back in his two-yard line.
00:26:22High spinning kick.
00:26:23It's short to the 11th.
00:26:28And very good special teams play.
00:26:31Kevin Faulkner's run down way back inside the 15-yard line.
00:26:35Coming down to make the play was Darius Clark for 47th.
00:26:43You know, it's interesting.
00:26:44I think now for the first time,
00:26:46it's going to be up to Tom Brady to win a football game on his own.
00:26:49He's going to come in here late in the third quarter
00:26:51in a tight ball game.
00:26:53There's no three-touchdown lead like there was a week ago in Indianapolis.
00:26:57This is going to be Tom Brady's moment to really say, I really can't.
00:27:01I'm not a fluke.
00:27:03I am the real deal.
00:27:05Brady has thrown for only 20 yards in the second half.
00:27:08Greasy's thrown for 127.
00:27:11Hand off.
00:27:12Fighting for yards and getting plus yards out to the 30-yard line.
00:27:16Here's his running back, Antoine Smith.
00:27:19Follow all the games on NFL.com,

00:27:29Each quarterback, Steve, threw for 119 yards in the first half,
00:27:32but a very different story in the second.
00:27:34Yeah, Brady for 20 yards.
00:27:36Brian Greasy for 127 yards in the second half
00:27:40and we're only just coming to the end of the third quarter.
00:27:452.48 to play in it.
00:27:47Second down and short.
00:27:49Back to the run.
00:27:50Huge defensive play.
00:27:52The middle backer, Al Wilson, shooting the gap
00:27:56and making the stop for a loss on the play.
00:27:58Back to the 28-yard line.
00:28:00So now Brady looks to the sideline.
00:28:03When you see a defense make a play like this,
00:28:06you know, it's as much a function of being aggressive
00:28:10and really being at home that makes you do that.
00:28:13More and more of this Denver team is feeling at home here in Vesco Field.
00:28:18The crowd is into it, and this is an energetic place
00:28:21just like Mile High used to be, and you can tell it's having an effect.
00:28:25Up to call signals.
00:28:26Brady and the shotgun.
00:28:28Third down, needs four.
00:28:30Makes the throw and the catch.
00:28:31It goes to Charles Johnson,
00:28:34and Johnson makes a big play on a slant route over the middle.
00:28:38Timing throw, beautifully executed.
00:28:40The drive continues.
00:28:41This is a zone blitz.
00:28:42Leon Lett drops out from being a pass rusher trying to defend the pass.
00:28:46You see there right there, he just misses the play
00:28:49trying to confuse Tom Brady with a different blitz look
00:28:52by pulling a pass-rushing defensive lineman out into coverage
00:28:56and sending one of the small guys after him.
00:28:59But Brady, once again, not fooled.
00:29:04Brady steps in.
00:29:05Here comes the rush.
00:29:06Here's the throw.
00:29:07Another perfect strike out to the midfield line,
00:29:10and it's a gain on the play of 13 yards and another first down.
00:29:14David Patton coming down with the ball.
00:29:17It continues to be Tom Brady's style to hit guys all over the field.
00:29:23I mean, he's hit six or eight different receivers today.
00:29:26David Patton again.
00:29:27That's really difficult for a defense, Tom.
00:29:30If every guy on your team who's eligible is catching passes,
00:29:33who do you concentrate on?
00:29:34He makes you play the whole field, and he sees the whole field.
00:29:40First down, Patriots trailing for the first time in the game
00:29:43late in the third quarter.
00:29:46Hand up, big gap, and rocketing straight ahead
00:29:50close to first down yard as it looks from the linesman's spot that he has it.
00:29:55Live from Channel 12, here's today's Rhode Island Lottery number.
00:30:00Good evening.
00:30:01I'm Nick Blair from Rhode Island College.
00:30:02Welcome to tonight's Daily Number Drawing.
00:30:04Here's tonight's winning number.
00:30:07First digit, zero.
00:30:09Second digit, two.
00:30:11Third digit, nine.
00:30:13And final digit, seven.
00:30:15Repeating, zero, two, nine, seven.
00:30:17Have a good night.
00:30:19Made a big block throw to Robinson Randall.
00:30:22First down, Patriots.
00:30:24Big throw near side, Patton.
00:30:26Gets yards as the very fast defenders for the Broncos run him out of bounds.
00:30:31Denard Walker, 27.
00:30:32John Mobley was also on the play.
00:30:36This is a real offensive textbook.
00:30:38It really is.
00:30:39Brady's just making every throw, and the Bronco defenders are doing everything they can
00:30:44to cover the guys when he does.
00:30:45John Mobley out from the linebacking position on that wide screen,
00:30:49almost in on the tackle.
00:30:51He had talked to Mobley yesterday, and he said,
00:30:53you know, I just want to make sure I'm assignment pure.
00:30:56And that's really, when you're assignment pure,
00:30:58it means you don't make mistakes.
00:30:59And against a quarterback like Brady, that's important.
00:31:01At the end of the third quarter, Patriots trailing now 24 to 20.
00:31:05The Broncos will return after this.
00:31:07Message from your local station.
00:31:12The young starter, Tom Brady, continues to build his passing numbers.
00:31:16He's hit 21 of 24 for 163 yards in this game.
00:31:20Two for touchdowns.
00:31:21His counterpart, a former teammate at Michigan, Brian Greasy,
00:31:24has hit 15 of 25 for 246 yards in two touchdowns,
00:31:29but two of an intercept and one a tip ball.
00:31:31It really wasn't his fault.
00:31:32One was right to the wrong guy.
00:31:34But now Greasy has led his team back to take the lead for the first time
00:31:38as we start the fourth quarter.
00:31:41Brady on second down, needing six, makes the throw.
00:31:44It's on the hands of his receiver, but so is a jarring tackle on that receiver,
00:31:48Troy Brown.
00:31:50And the ball is separated.
00:31:52Delta O'Neal, 24.
00:31:55Big hit.
00:31:57You talk about these quarterbacks and how they're playing.
00:31:59Both of them are playing really well.
00:32:01You see here, Greasy has come through.
00:32:03He threw the two interceptions, but he also came back with two touchdowns.
00:32:07Or one interception and two touchdowns.
00:32:09This is the difference right here.
00:32:10Brady's only got – he's eight for eight, but 44 yards.
00:32:12They're going to have to ask more of him, Don.
00:32:15These are the second-half numbers.
00:32:18For long, he's going to go over the top.
00:32:20He's thinking and dunking.
00:32:23Defense is up.
00:32:25And third down.
00:32:26And now a timeout is signaled with 14.53 to play.
00:32:31Brady wants some counsel on this important down.
00:32:35♪♪♪
00:32:42Denver 24 to England 20.
00:32:45As we come up to third down.
00:32:48And the young quarterback needs seven.
00:32:52The Broncos exhort the crowd here at Invesco.
00:32:58Brady with maybe his biggest snap of the day coming now to keep the drive alive.
00:33:02Early in the fourth quarter.
00:33:05Three wide receivers, two backs.
00:33:10Hand off.
00:33:11They go to Mark Edwards.
00:33:12If he crashes ahead, they go to a fullback run.
00:33:15And there's a penalty marker down as Edwards goes down at about the 34-yard line.
00:33:20A good four yards short of where he needed to go for the first down.
00:33:23And there's a face mask at the end of that.
00:33:29On the defense.
00:33:30We'll see if it's going to be a 5, 10, or 15-yarder.
00:33:34Or a 15-yarder, yeah.
00:33:36Depending on the severity.
00:33:37Here's Walt Coleman.
00:33:40Face mask, five yards, number 56.
00:33:43Will result in a first down.
00:33:46Wow.
00:33:49We'll watch here as it comes in.
00:33:54I don't see it yet.
00:33:55I don't see it yet.
00:33:56There it is right there.
00:33:57Al Wilson gets his hand up around the face mask.
00:34:00Spot foul.
00:34:01So it's hilarious.
00:34:02That's exactly right.
00:34:03And they were passing.
00:34:04They got the first down.
00:34:05Exactly.
00:34:06The five-yard penalty gave them the first down.
00:34:07We've seen that at two crucial times today against the Broncos.
00:34:11First and ten.
00:34:12The drive lives for the Patriots.
00:34:13Bronco defenders coming hard.
00:34:15Brady gets time.
00:34:16Fires.
00:34:18Extending for the ball is Kevin Faulk.
00:34:21He can't get it.
00:34:22It'll be second and ten.
00:34:23We head back to New York and to Jim Nantz.
00:34:26All right, thank you, Don.
00:34:27Tight games, the order of the day out at Seattle.
00:34:30One-yard run here.
00:34:31Lamar Smith to tie it.
00:34:33They've moved on to the fourth quarter.
00:34:3512 minutes to play tied at 17.
00:34:38Let's go back to Don and Steve.
00:34:40Thanks, Jim.
00:34:41Right now we have second down and ten coming up after a near miss over the middle.
00:34:46Defenders, there's John Mobley, a very good pass cover with their speed.
00:34:50Mike Shanahan has linebackers who can not only play the run and blitz,
00:34:54they can pass cover.
00:34:57And second down.
00:34:58Brady stands in.
00:34:59He swings it out.
00:35:00Another screen play.
00:35:01This one comes nearside to Antoine Smith,
00:35:04and he's down inside the 25-yard line to the 23.
00:35:08The Patriots have a beautiful new stadium coming next summer, CMGI Field.
00:35:14Here it is under construction in Foxboro.
00:35:17An absolutely fabulous facility, as is this one the Broncos play in.
00:35:20Here's a virtual tour of it.
00:35:23I tell you, Don, there's a lot of new stadiums around the NFL,
00:35:25and each one is more beautiful than the last,
00:35:28and I'm pretty sure the one in New England,
00:35:30which that guy right there told us is going to feature a lighthouse.
00:35:34Yeah, a lighthouse and a bridge.
00:35:35Bob Kraft, he said, you only build one stadium in your lifetime.
00:35:38We decided to make it a good one.
00:35:40They did.
00:35:41Right now, third down and four.
00:35:43Throw and a catch.
00:35:44Troy Brown.
00:35:46And a penalty markers down as Brady has hit his helmet's knocked off
00:35:49after he releases the ball,
00:35:51and they might get Trevor Price on a roughing the passer call.
00:35:58And that'll be the second one.
00:36:00The first one on the first series of the game, and there it is.
00:36:03Roughing the passer.
00:36:05Now, this is what's really hurt the Broncos today, Don,
00:36:08more so than even, I think, even more so than Greasy's two interceptions
00:36:12have been the penalties at crucial times on drives.
00:36:15Roughing the passer.
00:36:17Number 93.
00:36:18Defense.
00:36:19Hits him in the head.
00:36:20Has to miss with four goals.
00:36:22First down.
00:36:25Another costly personal foul keeps the drive alive.
00:36:29We'll see there as he releases the ball.
00:36:32And that's just silly.
00:36:34I mean, there's no reason for that.
00:36:35Once he's right in his face, they're going to call that every time,
00:36:38and I don't know how many times that has to happen around the National
00:36:42Football League before the defensive linemen learn it.
00:36:45His hand was up around the face mask of the quarterback,
00:36:47and they're going to call it every time.
00:36:50It should be called as if Shanahan wants an answer from Price.
00:36:54Five-million-dollar-a-year defensive tech,
00:36:56and one of the best players in the league at his position,
00:36:58but not on that play.
00:37:03First down.
00:37:04Patriots mounting the challenge, keeping the drive going.
00:37:08Brady throws, and the ball overshoots.
00:37:11And his intended receiver, Troy Brown, bring up second down.
00:37:15That was a play when the defense ran on late,
00:37:18and as Brady backed up into the pocket,
00:37:20he didn't know exactly what defense he was looking at because the Broncos
00:37:23couldn't get lined up.
00:37:25You see there, running on very late is Kavika Pittman,
00:37:30and Brady didn't know exactly who was covering who, who was rushing.
00:37:33He didn't know exactly what was going to happen with the defense,
00:37:35and he looked a little hesitant on his decisions and his read.
00:37:39Now Brady sets his team with four wide receivers.
00:37:44Raw play to Kevin Falk, and he's inside the ten-yard line,
00:37:48but well short of a first down, so that brings up third down and a six or seven.
00:37:53Tackle made by big Leon Lepp, the former Dallas Cowboy, number 94.
00:37:58Leon Lepp, one of those guys who is one of the –
00:38:00well, I don't know what you call them.
00:38:01They're huge.
00:38:02I mean, you can use any big adjective here.
00:38:05He's big, and that's what they need down there.
00:38:08If you look at Peter McLaughlin and Leon Lepp in there,
00:38:10they're like tree stumps.
00:38:11You can't move them, so you have to run around them.
00:38:15Charlie Weiss, the offensive coordinator for the Patriots with a play call here.
00:38:19Third down, needing seven.
00:38:21His team down by four.
00:38:23And in his wisdom, Tom Brady calls a timeout.
00:38:27Wanted to make sure it worked.
00:38:29Getting a defensive look he wasn't ready for.
00:38:35The NFL on CBS.

00:38:44Cold filtered Miller genuine draft.

00:38:49And by Volkswagen.
00:38:51On the road of life, there are passengers and there are drivers.
00:38:56Here we are back in the capital city of Colorado, Denver.
00:39:00Rocky Mountain Thunder starts up as a huge play
00:39:03now evolves for the Patriots and the Broncos.
00:39:06The Patriots down 24 to 20.
00:39:09And Mobley knows how to get them fired up.
00:39:13Cameras are shaking because the stands are.
00:39:17Third down.
00:39:19Brady and the Patriots need a long seven, almost eight.
00:39:28Lips is coming.
00:39:30Brady stands in and goes down.
00:39:36Penalty markers down at the line of scrimmage.
00:39:39Penalty markers came out very early.
00:39:43It's going to be on the Patriots for illegal procedure.
00:39:56That was a break for the Patriots.
00:39:58It really was.
00:39:59Now they get a chance at it.
00:40:00They need more yards, but they get the down over.
00:40:05Right up here is the false start.
00:40:09Right down here is the false start.
00:40:13They sent everybody but Mike Shanahan after Brady as his
00:40:16helmet comes flying up again.
00:40:18Again, a high hit.
00:40:21Even in that, I mean, Brady gets up after getting his helmet
00:40:24ripped off like he just bent over to tie his shoe.
00:40:28The guy's got some poise.
00:40:31Those helmets don't come flying off by themselves.
00:40:36Third down and 12.
00:40:38Brady takes a look.
00:40:40Throws.
00:40:42Intercepted in the end zone.
00:40:43A brilliant play.
00:40:45Coming up with the ball is Denard Walker, number 27.
00:40:50And the drive is stopped.
00:40:52So Brady throws his first interception since starting as a Patriot.
00:40:57Bill Belichick sees the drive stalled.
00:40:59His team down by four.
00:41:02So now Brian Greasy and the Broncos take over after one of the great plays
00:41:06maybe of his season for the Broncos.
00:41:10There is Denard Walker, who was an off-season acquisition.
00:41:14Kind of an unrestricted free agent from Tennessee.
00:41:16A top cornerback, and he showed it there.
00:41:18A tremendous play to stop the Patriot drive.
00:41:22Now Greasy likes to take his team to the run as he gets it to Orlando's Gary.
00:41:28Well, one of the things that happens when you're a quarterback, Don,
00:41:30they always tell you rule number one, never throw late over the middle.
00:41:33Brady moves to his right, throws back across his body late in the play.
00:41:37What a pick, though, huh?
00:41:38And that's the result of a 13-play drive for the Patriots comes up empty.
00:41:44Mike Shanahan and his team looking for big plays.
00:41:48He really gets one there.
00:41:52Tom Brady, his first 163 passes.
00:41:57No intercepts.
00:41:59NFL record.
00:42:01Old record was 130 by Warren Moon.
00:42:04Now they swing it out, and again, Desmond Clark,
00:42:06the guy you were talking about, Steve, figuring so prominently in the game plan.
00:42:09They blanked him out today, and he continues to catch the ball.
00:42:13Six catches for 94 yards.
00:42:15Well, it's been a problem the last few weeks in Denver.
00:42:17They've been trying to find a guy to replace Ed McCaffrey,
00:42:20who they lost on opening day.
00:42:22Well, forget it.
00:42:23Maybe it's not going to be one of your wide receivers.
00:42:25Let's use Desmond Clark and see if we can let him fill the void,
00:42:28and he's done that today.
00:42:30Still a lot of time left.
00:42:32Gracie patiently setting his team,
00:42:34looking to run clock with the running play on first down.
00:42:39Well, the Patriots stuff it.
00:42:41They brought everybody up.
00:42:42Oh, there's defensive call with strictly play the run.
00:42:46Next Sunday, the NFL on CBS is back with a doubleheader.
00:42:49First, the Ravens take on the Steelers,
00:42:51and in Game 2, the Browns visit the Bears.
00:42:54That's now a 4-15 start, a doubleheader game on CBS.

00:43:12The Bears.
00:43:13It was a countdown going on in Chicago among many,
00:43:16and when Coach would be fired, Dick Juran,
00:43:19now he's got a shot at being Coach of the Year,
00:43:22the way they're playing.
00:43:23And Gracie gets his own tip ball,
00:43:25and quickly goes to the ground at the 30-yard line.
00:43:28Brandon Mitchell jumped up and Gracie threw it right at him,
00:43:31and alertly, or actually not too alertly,
00:43:33he should have batted it to the ground.
00:43:36Turned the game last week when he blocked the first kick of the game
00:43:39by the Colts.
00:43:41See, this is just reflexes.
00:43:42Brian Gracie, if he had us do it again, he would know better.
00:43:45The best thing to do is just bat it down as an incomplete pass,
00:43:47but instead it's a 6-yard loss.
00:43:51But he does complete one to himself.
00:43:54Your statistical wizard there, Don,
00:43:56against the completion and the reception.
00:43:59But now third and long comes up.
00:44:01Six different players catching balls.
00:44:04Gracie stands in.
00:44:05He's going deep.
00:44:07And a nice breakup.
00:44:09The ball is broken up by Otis Smith.
00:44:13Long ball to Eddie Kinnison.
00:44:14I mean, the ball was right there, but so was Otis Smith.
00:44:18This is exactly what the Patriots needed, a defensive stand.
00:44:22They've got the ball back.
00:44:23Denver's going to be forced to punt.
00:44:24Otis Wilson, Otis Smith, I'm sorry, just perfect coverage.
00:44:29Now on the sideline, Eddie Kinnison had no chance on that catch.
00:44:40Teams have burned a lot of timeouts early in this game, in this half.
00:44:44And now Denver is signaling a timeout before they punt the ball,
00:44:48which is unusual on fourth and 16.
00:44:53The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Dr. Pepper and your local Dr. Pepper bottler.
00:44:59Dr. Pepper makes the world taste better.
00:45:02And by Burger King, home of the Whopper.
00:45:1024 to 20.
00:45:12The Broncos lead, but they're now ready to punt the ball.
00:45:15Tonight on 60 Minutes, did Saddam Hussein have a hand in the terror attack
00:45:19on the United States?
00:45:20Leslie Stahl reports from Iraq.
00:45:22That's tonight on 60 Minutes, followed by Oscar and Richard Dreyfuss
00:45:25in the new hit series, The Education of Max Bickford.
00:45:28Then a magical wedding dress passes through the lives of five different couples,
00:45:32time daily stars in the CBS Sunday movie, The Wedding Dress,
00:45:36all tonight on CBS.
00:45:39Now Tom Ruin, ready to boom the ball.
00:45:42He can kick it far.
00:45:44Troy Brown, back to return the punt.
00:45:46Line drive kick.
00:45:48Patriots will return this.
00:45:49Brown backpedaling to his 17.
00:45:52Weaving ahead, Blake Belichick says,
00:45:55nobody has better special teams than the Broncos,
00:45:58and they show it there.
00:45:59You were a specialist, Steve, going to seven Pro Bowls for the Bills.
00:46:03A lot of it coming on kick coverage.
00:46:05A lot of it coming on kick coverage.
00:46:06What's the key to getting them in fast?
00:46:08Desire.
00:46:09I mean, that's all there is to it.
00:46:10You've got to just stay on your feet, don't get knocked off your feet,
00:46:13and run like your life depends on it.
00:46:16That was a 54-yard punt and a 6-yard return.
00:46:19So now the young quarterback, Tom Brady, 24 years old,
00:46:23starting just his fifth game as a Patriot since Drew Bledsoe was hurt.
00:46:28The pressure's on.
00:46:31The Bronco defense has really risen up as this game wears on.
00:46:34Brady, late fix, makes a throw.
00:46:36It's blocked at the line of scrimmage.
00:46:4097, Keith Washington, Chester McLaughlin also with a hand up.
00:46:46This is a crucial drive for the Patriots, Don.
00:46:48Now's when Brady's going to have to step up and be a great quarterback,
00:46:52not just a backup who's playing well.
00:46:54They need him on this drive to take them down and get some points out of it,
00:46:58give them a chance to win.
00:46:59They're running out of time here in the fourth quarter
00:47:01with ten and a half minutes to go.
00:47:05Second down and ten.
00:47:09Pitch back.
00:47:11Running hard and getting across the 30-yard line
00:47:13before a good open field tackle.
00:47:15Antoine Smith gains about seven yards on the play.
00:47:19You think about this as Antoine Smith gets up limping.
00:47:21There's the guy who's been through it.
00:47:23I mean, he's a guy.
00:47:24Now, he's calling the plays into Brady.
00:47:26And you think, too, when you call him, you say,
00:47:28Hey, Tom, look at this on this snap.
00:47:30Do this on this snap.
00:47:31He can give him a few extra pointers while he's on the radio with him.
00:47:34And that's an interesting way to do it.
00:47:36I mean, having the star player be the guy to talk to your backup
00:47:41who's playing well.
00:47:44He has thrown the ball now 30 times, completed 22 for 170 yards,
00:47:48but they've considerably shut down his passing yardage in the second half.
00:47:52There's George Coghill, number 48, shaking up, but George is all right
00:47:57and should be ready to go after one play away from the action.
00:48:04Ball position just across the 30.
00:48:06It's third and two, and this is crucial.
00:48:08I mean, they've got to stay on the field.
00:48:10They can't let themselves be put in the position to have to give the ball
00:48:14back to Brian Greasy and the Broncos.
00:48:16They've got to get some points on this drive,
00:48:18or something special has to happen later.
00:48:22Marshall or Kevin Falk is in to run the ball behind Mark Edwards.
00:48:28Snap, family markers down all over, throwing a catch to Edwards.
00:48:34He advances the ball to the 34-yard line.
00:48:36If the play went, it would be enough for a first down,
00:48:38but the flags were down right at the snap.
00:48:40Well, Mark Edwards made the mistake.
00:48:42He made the catch, but it was his mistake.
00:48:44Moving forward.
00:48:46Legal motion.
00:48:47Yeah, there was a man in motion across the formation,
00:48:49and only one guy can do that at a time,
00:48:51and Mark Edwards stood up to do it as well.
00:48:54Two men moving and not resetting.
00:48:57Five-yard penalty, still third down.
00:49:01You just can't do that.
00:49:03What happens is, is the player comes across in motion.
00:49:06You see this all the time.
00:49:07Watch Mark Edwards.
00:49:08He'll twitch and start to move there, and that's illegal.
00:49:11You can't have two guys moving at the same time,
00:49:13or you can't have two guys moving at the same time.
00:49:15You can't have two guys moving at the same time,
00:49:17or the receiver has to stop as well and stop again and then restart.
00:49:24That makes it a third down and seven play.
00:49:27Brady with three wide receivers.
00:49:33Here comes the rush.
00:49:34Brady looks, makes a throw, and it's caught for a first down.
00:49:37Troy Brown is not done until he gets out to the 42-yard line.
00:49:41They needed seven, and they end up getting 16,
00:49:44and another terrific play by the young quarterback.
00:49:47What a great route by Brown.
00:49:48He comes in.
00:49:49You watch him.
00:49:50He'll run in and then back out at the top.
00:49:53Great playing, great patience by Brady, waiting for him to come open.
00:49:57Good time by the offensive line.
00:49:59This is why the Patriots have been successful in the last month.
00:50:02Brady, not only has he thrown the ball accurately,
00:50:04he's had time to see the defense.
00:50:08The plot thickens.
00:50:09The pressure builds.
00:50:11And Brady and the Patriots have a first down.
00:50:14Give to Falk, protecting the ball with both arms.
00:50:17Broncos give up yardage grudgingly straight ahead.
00:50:20Mobley with the tackle.
00:50:22And a gain of about three yards on the play.
00:50:24Second down and seven.
00:50:26That's interesting.
00:50:27We saw Antoine Smith come out off the field a little while ago,
00:50:30limping badly.
00:50:31Now the guy in there is Kevin Falk in a crucial drive in the fourth quarter.
00:50:37You always want to have your best guys in there,
00:50:38but New England rotates their guys more than anybody,
00:50:41so Falk is going to be prepared for this drive.
00:50:45Troy Brown had caught that last one.
00:50:46He said, Steve, in that San Diego game after it was over,
00:50:49that nobody would believe we couldn't win after the way Brady led us in the
00:50:54huddle.
00:50:55They came back from ten points down with just over five minutes to play to
00:50:58win 29-26.
00:51:02When you step into the huddle in the NFL, Don,
00:51:04they always say stuff about having a presence in the huddle,
00:51:07and it really all comes down to how you perceive your quarterback to feel,
00:51:11how confident he is and whether he knows what he's doing.
00:51:14Some guys, you step in there and they can say three words and you know
00:51:17they've got it.
00:51:18Other guys can talk all day and you never believe it.
00:51:20Well, we've got to see what he can do with his arm
00:51:22and what the Bronco defense can do.
00:51:24They've been coming hard at front four,
00:51:26generating pressure straight up the middle.
00:51:28Here's a blitz picked up.
00:51:29Brady looks, makes a throw.
00:51:31Open man, but it's over.
00:51:33Shot and intercepted by Delta O'Neal.
00:51:37How prophetic the words of Belichick, who told us yesterday,
00:51:40if you throw it near O'Neal, there's a very good chance he's going to grab it.
00:51:44And he did.
00:51:45For those of you expecting to see 60 Minutes, you're watching the NFL on CBS
00:51:49and the game between the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos.
00:51:53I'm Don Pricky along with Steve Tasker.
00:51:55Our score is 24-20.
00:51:58The Broncos in the lead.
00:52:0060 Minutes will be seen in its entirety immediately following this game,
00:52:03except on the West Coast.
00:52:09So Brady picked off for a second time in this game
00:52:12and for the second straight possession he's picked off.
00:52:15The previous one in the end zone, Delta O'Neal picked off
00:52:18Trent Green of the Kansas City Chiefs this season four times in one game.
00:52:23Now the Broncos will try to run the ball and the clock.
00:52:26Not much on first down as Orlando's Gary carries.
00:52:31We're coming to you in Vesco Field at mile high.
00:52:34A dramatic game under a full moon in the mile high city
00:52:38as the Denver Broncos were down 10-0.
00:52:41Later they were down 20-10.
00:52:43They've rallied to take a 24-20 lead.
00:52:46Now after intercepting the previously unintercepted quarterback
00:52:51for the Patriots, Tom Brady, twice,
00:52:54they look to run clock and the ball.
00:52:57Brian Greasy under the run.
00:52:59He makes a throw and a tremendous fingertip catch by Carswell.
00:53:02And he's out across the 30-yard line
00:53:05and he has a first down for the Broncos.
00:53:08Knocked out of bounds by Otis Smith.
00:53:10This has been a game in which Denver has done
00:53:13everything they've needed to do offensively
00:53:16and the defense has overcome all the problems they've caused themselves.
00:53:20Here you see Greasy finding one more guy.
00:53:23He's hit just about everybody who was eligible today.
00:53:26They're buying himself a little time
00:53:28and that's the kind of thing that has given him problems with his shoulder, Don.
00:53:31Late in ballgames he's taken some heat and some hits that have hurt.
00:53:36All the guys that the Patriots are bringing up,
00:53:39they're looking to play run.
00:53:41Run it is.
00:53:42Trying to turn wide and cutting back Orlando's Gary.
00:53:45He's got nothing but the white-shirted Patriots to sweep him under.
00:53:49Led by the cornerback Otis Smith.
00:53:52Still the clock continues to run.
00:53:54The Patriots' dilemma compounded by the fact
00:53:56they have no more timeouts remaining.
00:53:58That's right, and there you see Tom Brady
00:54:00who was victimized by Delton.
00:54:02He threw the ball up on the big corner route
00:54:04and you see there he was 0 for interceptions
00:54:07on his first 163 attempts
00:54:09and now he's got 2 in his last 3.
00:54:12We spoke with him yesterday and you get the feeling
00:54:14it's not going to bother him.
00:54:16He's going to bounce back very well.
00:54:19But Greasy right now engineering his team very nicely
00:54:21with a 2nd down and 10 play coming.
00:54:25They go to a reverse and they get an open channel.
00:54:27A first down and more as the ball is handed off.
00:54:32Running around nearside and Eddie Kennison
00:54:34is ahead for a gain of 12 yards and a first down.
00:54:38Well this is what the Broncos need.
00:54:40Just get first downs, run the clock,
00:54:43use their field position to their advantage.
00:54:46The fact that the Patriots can't stop the clock,
00:54:48all Denver has to do is stay on the football field
00:54:51offensively and they win this football game.
00:54:54Great play called by Mike Shanahan,
00:54:56keeping the ball on the ground
00:54:58and yet doing something a little bit daring.
00:55:01Both these teams, 3 and 3, but very different 3 and 3s.
00:55:04The Broncos with the ball have lost 3 of their last 4.
00:55:08The Patriots have won 3 of their last 4.
00:55:10Greasy takes a look.
00:55:11Pump fakes.
00:55:12Here comes the rush.
00:55:13McGinnis gets him a sack back inside the 30.
00:55:17A phenomenal play by Willie McGinnis.
00:55:20He's had back surgeries and injury problems,
00:55:22but his coaches say this defense works when McGinnis is in there.
00:55:26And that's a huge play for about a 12-yard loss for the Broncos
00:55:30and that could be the thing that makes it possible
00:55:33for the Patriots to get the football back.
00:55:36You're right, Don.
00:55:37McGinnis has really struggled the last couple of years
00:55:39with injuries, but when he's healthy, Don,
00:55:42he can bring the heat on the quarterback.
00:55:44Well, he has 2 sacks today, Willie McGinnis.
00:55:48Former number 1 pick out of Southern California back in 94.
00:55:55Second down and 22.
00:55:57Greasy goes to the run.
00:55:58They're playing a position football.
00:56:00They'll punt the ball back to the Patriots
00:56:02and bet on their defense that they can stop them
00:56:05from taking it into the end zone.
00:56:07Denver has 2 timeouts left if it comes to that,
00:56:10but the Patriots have none.
00:56:12And on a 3rd and 20, Denver I think is just making sure
00:56:17that they don't give up a turnover,
00:56:18try and get some positive yards,
00:56:20and now they're thinking field position.
00:56:24Belichick was talking about Delvon Neal.
00:56:26He said, you throw near him, he's going to pick it off.
00:56:28And he just got the last one that Brady threw.
00:56:323rd down, 19.
00:56:35Greasy's going to take one big shot over the top.
00:56:37Here's the rush again.
00:56:38There's a throw and a connection.
00:56:40And is it a first down?
00:56:41It is not.
00:56:42He is just short of it
00:56:43as the balls advance to the 49-yard line.
00:56:47Scottie Montgomery, who was just activated,
00:56:50makes a big play.
00:56:53Watch it.
00:56:54This is a good play call for this situation.
00:56:57It's a safe throw, but you give your guy a chance
00:57:00to make a run for the first down.
00:57:02You don't risk a long throw, an interception,
00:57:04or an incompletion either
00:57:06because now the clock continues to run,
00:57:08and the clock is the ally of the Broncos.
00:57:11Well, 18 yards they gained on the pass.
00:57:13Played to Bucky Jones, making the hit that stopped it
00:57:15a yard short of the first down, and he did 19.
00:57:20Troy Brown is back.
00:57:21Tom Ruhland to putt.
00:57:26Good directional putter.
00:57:27He angles it near sideline.
00:57:29The ball will carry him into the hands, actually.
00:57:32Didn't go out of bounds.
00:57:33Fielded by Troy Brown at the 17-yard line.
00:57:38Penalty marker is down on the field.
00:57:40A couple of them are down.
00:57:46It's a 33-yard punt.
00:57:47No return.
00:57:48Personal foul.
00:57:49Signaled against the Patriots.
00:57:51So a bad situation gets worse for Coach Belichick.
00:57:54Personal foul.
00:57:55Unnecessary roughness.
00:57:5758.
00:57:58Return team.
00:57:59Half the distance to the goal.
00:58:01First down.
00:58:02Matt Chatham, a special teams player,
00:58:05You can see that Belichick says,
00:58:07You're not going to walk away, Wade.
00:58:09I want to yell at you just once more.
00:58:11There's no excuse for that, Don.
00:58:13Not at this point in the game.
00:58:15You need a touchdown to win, and you just cost your team a
00:58:18first down with a silly penalty.
00:58:21Well, they got the ball, but they'll get it inside their
00:58:2310-yard line.
00:58:25So this is the stuff that legends are made of.
00:58:28But will it be snuffed out as the quarterback,
00:58:33Tom Brady, has his team positioned 92 yards from the
00:58:36Bronco end zone.
00:58:38The worst starting point of any possessed in this day for the
00:58:42Patriots.
00:58:43And no timeouts.
00:58:44That's right.
00:58:45No timeouts.
00:58:46And no help from the Bronco fans,
00:58:48who are really lighting it up with the noise.
00:58:50Brady lets her go long, sprinting after the ball.
00:58:54And incomplete.
00:58:55Charles Johnson going for the ball.
00:58:57Double coverage.
00:59:00These guys can really run these corners.
00:59:02Tonight on 60 Minutes, did Saddam Hussein have a hand in the
00:59:05terror attack in the United States?
00:59:07Leslie Stahl reports from Saddam's Iraq.
00:59:09That's tonight on 60 Minutes.
00:59:11Followed by Oscar winner Richard Dreyfuss in the new hit series,
00:59:14The Education of Max Bickford.
00:59:16Then a magical wedding dress passing through the lives of
00:59:19five different couples in the CBS Sunday movie,
00:59:22The Wedding Dress.
00:59:23Tonight on CBS.
00:59:25Second and 10.
00:59:26Nearside throw.
00:59:27Patton with the catch.
00:59:28Short of the first down by a couple of yards.
00:59:30Ball positioned at the 17-yard line.
00:59:33Jimmy Spencer on the tackle.
00:59:35You wonder right now,
00:59:36Tom Brady is going to be able to do his best John Elway
00:59:39imitation here in Denver.
00:59:42No timeouts.
00:59:43Three and a half minutes to go in the game,
00:59:45and he needs a touchdown.
00:59:47Hits back.
00:59:48Antoine Smith turns it up.
00:59:50He gets a first down for the Patriots.
00:59:52Out to the 22-yard line.
00:59:54Bert Berry makes the step.
00:59:57Well, this is a guy that brought this club,
00:59:59the Denver Broncos,
01:00:00back more in the fourth quarter to win games than any player in
01:00:05NFL history.
01:00:06Tom Brady,
01:00:07just at the very beginning of his career,
01:00:10has a chance to begin that streak.
01:00:12But he does not have the mobility that John Elway has,
01:00:16so he's not a running threat,
01:00:17but he can sure gun it as he triggers another strike down into
01:00:20the hands of David Patton.
01:00:22Kenoa Kennedy quickly there.
01:00:24Drew Bledsoe.
01:00:25And Tom Brady,
01:00:26they talk about a quarterback controversy,
01:00:27but these two guys and three others,
01:00:29their teammates,
01:00:30went to the Yankee playoff game.
01:00:31They drove down after practice a week ago,
01:00:33last Monday night.
01:00:35They're very good friends.
01:00:37Right now,
01:00:38Brady needs all the help he can get.
01:00:39Throw and a pick.
01:00:41It's going to be a run back.
01:00:42Gennard Walker with the knockout punch.
01:00:44It's over.
01:00:46As Brady,
01:00:47going so long without interceptions,
01:00:49now throws three in his last three possessions.
01:00:55And it's over.
01:00:56It's over.
01:00:57It's over.
01:00:58It's over.

01:04:44.
01:04:45.
01:04:46.
01:04:47.
01:04:48one to nothing down the stretch
01:04:49run of this game.
01:04:50Yeah there's going to be bigger
01:04:51and better days for Tom Brady.
01:04:52He's had he's played well today
01:04:54but in trying to win the game as
01:04:55you see there sometimes it
01:04:58doesn't work.
01:04:59We try to do too much and it
01:05:02costs you.
01:05:03You can't say enough about the
01:05:04way the Broncos have come back
01:05:05and this is a team under
01:05:07pressure.
01:05:08The expectations are so high in
01:05:09this area for this team because
01:05:11of the success record.
01:05:13You lose two games in a row in
01:05:14the division the first time
01:05:16they've done that in six years
01:05:17and it's like the sky is
01:05:19falling in.
01:05:20But last year they went on to
01:05:21win eight of their last nine to
01:05:22go eleven and five and make the
01:05:24playoffs and they're ready to go
01:05:25on a run again.
01:05:27Starting with this Brady gets
01:05:28time triggers the ball went to
01:05:30the wrong guy.
01:05:31It's all come a cropper at this
01:05:33point as the ball is picked up
01:05:35by Delta O'Neill.
01:05:37He takes it down to the five
01:05:39yard line.
01:05:40Last four possessions for the
01:05:43Patriots for interceptions.
01:05:47And that's 60 minutes did Saddam
01:05:50Hussein have a hand in the
01:05:51terror attack on the United
01:05:52States.
01:05:54Leslie Stahl reports from
01:05:55Saddam's Iraq.
01:05:56That's tonight at 60 minutes so
01:06:01with this game today the
01:06:03Broncos will go back in the win
01:06:04column after this recent sinking
01:06:06spell they've lost three of their
01:06:07last four but Brady anybody
01:06:10knows and will tell you this is
01:06:12not a guy who's going to go back
01:06:13and cry over spilt milk and bad
01:06:16luck.
01:06:17He's going to come back with a
01:06:18vengeance next week at Atlanta.
01:06:19Yeah he's he's made some throws
01:06:21now the game is almost and it
01:06:23looks like the Denver Broncos
01:06:24are going to win it.
01:06:25He's just trying everything he
01:06:26can throw in the ball out.
01:06:28He's not thinking about his
01:06:29drills like he did early on and
01:06:31obviously it gets to that point
01:06:32in a game like this.
01:06:33And you know you start to make
01:06:35the wrong decisions.
01:06:37The executive producers of the

01:07:03and we thank them all the men
01:07:05and women of CBS Sports bringing
01:07:07you NFL football on a day when
01:07:09Mike Shanahan and his Broncos
01:07:10look to be in deep trouble and
01:07:11they were but in Shanahan style
01:07:15and he's a great guy and he's
01:07:16a great guy and he's a great
01:07:17guy and he's a great guy and he
01:07:19gets the ball and sees his
01:07:20Broncos rally back and score a
01:07:22huge win.
01:07:23These two teams came into this
01:07:24game three and three each but
01:07:25the Patriots came in thinking
01:07:28playing on the high note they've
01:07:29won three of their last four.
01:07:30They're on an uptick.
01:07:31The Broncos come in and it's
01:07:34almost comical.
01:07:34It's like they're trying to
01:07:35salvage an entire season when
01:07:37they're really as good as
01:07:38anybody else in the league.
01:07:39Thanks to our CBS statistician
01:07:41Joe Sullivan is Mike Shanahan
01:07:43with reason to smile.
01:07:44And now they come back and maybe
01:07:46the Broncos are going to go
01:07:47another of their runs to the
01:07:49playoff.
