I remember the first night
that I brought her home
she stunk so bad,
but I didn't wanna stress her out
by giving her full bath.

So I just gave her
a bat with wet wipes.
And she just melted.

I think it was the first time
in probably a long time
that she felt like
she was genuinely cared for.

00:00I remember the first night that I brought her home, she stunk so bad.
00:04Hi darling.
00:04I didn't want to stress her out by giving her a full bath,
00:07so I just gave her a bath with wet wipes and she just melted.
00:11I think it was the first time in probably a long time
00:14that she felt like she was genuinely cared for.
00:16I will always remember that moment.
00:18I'm Malia and this is Mabel's story for GeoBeats.
00:21I was working with a rescue based out of Las Vegas.
00:24They've got some weepy eyes.
00:26And one of our sister shelters reached out
00:28and they had a 12-year-old blind underweight cat that they wanted to be placed.
00:32And I said, awesome, I'll take her.
00:34She sounded perfect.
00:35And whenever I went to go pick her up, she was a mess.
00:38Look at this little alien.
00:40I was shocked at how tiny she was and how frail she looked.
00:46Good girl.
00:48She had stomatitis, recurrent ear infections and oral growth.
00:51She was blind from untreated glaucoma, had a lot of chronic food allergies.
00:55The first few weeks were really a touch and go.
00:58I really did think she was just a hospice case.
01:01So I was mostly focused on earning her trust and letting her know that she was safe
01:06and just improving her quality of life however I could.
01:09I also tried to be respectful of her feelings
01:12and let her approach me as much as possible.
01:14And so we spent a lot of time just sitting together.
01:17Hi, beautiful.
01:18I would bring a book into her room and I would just sit there.
01:21Or I would bring my dinner into her room and we would eat together
01:24because she was really nervous to eat by herself.
01:26So I just was like, okay, we'll eat dinner together every night.
01:29And that just became the theme.
01:31Caring for an animal that is that fragile can be difficult, but it's always worth it.
01:35They're really gifts to the world.
01:36Mabel is 15 years old now.
01:38I thought she was going to be a hospice case,
01:40but it's been over three years and she's better than ever.
01:46She's everything wonderful in the world.
01:48We live in San Francisco now and she goes on adventures all the time.
01:52We'll go on smell tours, see the fishermen's wharf.
01:55We go to the beach.
01:56We go to parks.
01:57I'm very big on consent-based practices.
02:00Everything with her is based on communication.
02:03I ask her if she wants to put a harness on and I hold it up to her.
02:05And if she engages with it and acts like she would like to put it on, then I'll put it on.
02:09She's really good about memorizing spaces.
02:17And she's also really good about asking for help.
02:19So if she gets confused or lost or she climbs up somewhere
02:23but she can't figure out how to get down, she'll call out to me.
02:26If we're out and about and she feels uncomfortable,
02:29she'll climb on my shoulder and just sit there and that's kind of her safe spot.
02:35I admire her.
02:36She's one of the greatest teachers I've ever had in my life.
02:38I learn so much from her every single day.
02:44She's really so wise and so incredible.
02:47And she might be small, but she has a lot to share with the world.
02:54Hi, Dolly.
02:55She demands respect, which I admire too.
02:58I knew that we were supposed to be together and we were supposed to help take care of each other.
03:02She is probably the toughest person that I've ever met in my life.
