00:00 - Baby fox.
00:01 - It's a dream to be near a little baby fox.
00:03 It's a magical experience.
00:05 Look at that baby fox.
00:07 I am Robin from Foxtails, Florida,
00:09 and this is Phoenix's story for GOP.
00:12 - Okay.
00:13 - We take in and provide rubber homes for foxes
00:16 that are raised in either fur farms or our pet surrenders.
00:19 (laughing)
00:20 Phoenix was born in a fur farm along with his siblings.
00:23 Give me a butt hug.
00:25 There's one.
00:26 And what happened was the mother chewed
00:28 all the baby's tails off,
00:30 making them unusable for the fur farmer.
00:33 The mother saved the lives of that whole litter
00:35 by chewing off their tails.
00:37 So they were rescued.
00:39 Fox, Darius, Mitten.
00:40 When we picked him up, he was just a little fluff ball.
00:42 My husband was just overwhelmed.
00:45 He was almost crying.
00:46 We are heading home.
00:48 Just holding him until we got all the way home.
00:50 About a six hour drive.
00:51 Day one, he lived in the house with us.
00:53 (crying)
00:54 He started to call for his litter mates and really cry.
00:58 It was so heartbreaking.
01:00 (crying)
01:02 We brought him in bed with us.
01:06 You shouldn't, but we did.
01:08 And he did much better.
01:09 He always made sure to use his litter box.
01:11 Ouch, baby fox's bite.
01:13 He chewed off a few things,
01:14 but he was very fun to have around.
01:17 Come on, you did it.
01:18 I would wiggle my fingers next to the top of the sheets
01:21 and he would do his fox hop.
01:22 I got one.
01:23 He loved to play with us.
01:26 Bring his favorite toys into bed
01:28 and just kind of hang out.
01:29 When he had about two, three months,
01:33 we started to let him go outside.
01:35 And boy, he started bonding with his adoptive siblings,
01:39 Winston and Turner.
01:41 Good morning, buddy.
01:44 He would still come in the house,
01:46 but his bonds started to get tighter with them.
01:48 And my husband kept saying to me,
01:49 are you sure he needs to stay outside?
01:51 But they prefer to be with other foxes.
01:53 Are you my little girl, Wilson?
01:55 And they are just the greatest little family.
01:58 These two are acting like daddies.
02:01 A lot of times the foxes will start to treat a baby
02:04 like it's their baby.
02:05 And they'll start bringing him food.
02:07 They would take him all their favorite snacks
02:09 and just drop it in front of him
02:10 and he would get the pick of anything that he wanted.
02:13 Each one of the foxes have chosen their own path
02:16 as to how they want to interact with little Phoenix.
02:19 Winston, we call him Winnie.
02:20 He is the one that likes to wrestle and play.
02:23 Really rough.
02:24 Oh, Winnie, he's tough.
02:26 Turner, he's the one that he curls up with
02:28 and takes naps with and eats his favorite food with.
02:31 I have always loved foxes.
02:35 There's a certain mystery to foxes,
02:37 the way they spend their lives.
02:38 Biggest misconception I want to talk about
02:40 is people thinking that they are just like dogs.
02:43 You have to be a certain kind of crazy
02:44 to have one as a pet.
02:45 They're destructive.
02:46 They want to dig a den in your couch.
02:48 They smell like skunks.
02:50 You can't discipline them because they are very sensitive.
02:53 If you were to scream at a fox
02:55 because it's ripping your carpet apart,
02:56 you may never be able to talk to or touch that animal again.
02:59 They hold grudges.
03:01 They're nothing like dogs.
03:02 And that's why most foxes that are purchased as pets
03:06 are rehomed within the first three months.
03:08 Phoenix, all his siblings got adopted
03:10 by other fox sanctuaries.
03:12 He will live his life out here
03:13 just like everybody else that lives here.
03:15 If they have no interest whatsoever
03:17 in having me touch them or pet them or anything like that,
03:20 that's fine.
03:21 Phoenix is here to be a fox.
03:23 I have to respect that.
