Javier Bardem | Don't Read The Comments
Transcript
00:00 Damn, Javier looks fit.
00:02 I need to know the workout prep.
00:04 Oh really?
00:05 Thank you for bringing up the good ones.
00:07 It's only since two years ago that I'm doing some weights
00:10 and I love it.
00:11 I'm not getting any younger.
00:13 I'm 54.
00:13 We need to build muscle in order to have a healthier old age
00:17 as the experts say.
00:19 So I'm finding it very encouraging and fun as well.
00:23 I enjoy it actually.
00:24 I like doing it.
00:26 Hi, I am Javier Bardem.
00:27 As we all know,
00:28 internet is a place with a lot of people
00:30 and that means a lot of opinions, good and bad.
00:33 And today we're gonna read some of them
00:36 in Don't Read The Comments.
00:38 (upbeat music)
00:40 I am curious how physically hard it was to film
00:46 'cause the entire cast looks mad fit.
00:49 It wasn't easy.
00:50 I don't know what they did,
00:51 but I know that having to wear that steel suit in the heat
00:56 for so many hours
00:58 and be able to not sweat.
01:00 Fremen don't sweat.
01:01 Me, I'm a sweater.
01:03 And we have some problems sometimes
01:05 where it's like, okay, cut.
01:06 You cannot sweat.
01:07 You have to be in shape for that.
01:09 Momoa says Javier is a boss.
01:11 Wonder if they worked out together.
01:14 No, no, I would never work out with Jason Momoa.
01:18 You're kidding?
01:19 He's so strong like Jesus.
01:21 He's super fit and strong and he's super sweet
01:24 and fun and nice and adorable.
01:28 I remember in 2019, my kids were like six and nine
01:32 and he was throwing them from the pool
01:35 to the other side of the pool in the water.
01:37 And they were flying, literally flying.
01:39 And they loved it.
01:40 And I said, oh, what adorable human being.
01:42 He's so good at playing villains,
01:45 but what hero should he be cast as?
01:47 I think Stilgar from "Doom Part II"
01:49 is kind of a hero, actually.
01:51 He's a hero to his people.
01:52 He's a hero to the cause.
01:54 When I first read the books,
01:55 I immediately felt drawn to Stilgar character
01:58 because he's iconic.
01:59 Does he get to ride a sandworm?
02:01 Yes.
02:02 On the second part, "Doom Part II," yes.
02:04 And I was looking for it in a big way and it was amazing.
02:08 And also kind of thrilling because they build
02:11 this real size back of the sandworm on the set
02:16 that you have to hop in and they were moving it
02:21 like side to side, up and down,
02:24 throwing wind and sand to your face.
02:26 Talking about being fit,
02:27 you have to really be strong in order to hold it there.
02:30 And the way it looks in the movie is phenomenal.
02:32 So it was fun.
02:33 He was terrifying in this movie.
02:35 How did he get into the mindset of a psycho?
02:38 I don't know.
02:41 I guess I have a psycho inside of me.
02:44 Who doesn't?
02:45 I need to know what I stand to win.
02:47 Everything.
02:48 Just call it, friendo.
02:50 By that I mean, the actor is forced to understand
02:54 every aspect of himself or herself
02:57 in order to be able to convey those emotions.
02:59 We all have many dark sides inside that hopefully
03:03 by being rational and educating ourselves,
03:06 we don't let them out.
03:07 But we are animals and we have instincts
03:10 and the actor is obliged to be in contact
03:14 with those instincts, putting their rationality away.
03:17 And that's what the character is in this case.
03:20 I need to know whose idea was it
03:22 for him to have this haircut.
03:24 The Coens, the Coen brothers.
03:26 I let my hair grow because I didn't know
03:28 what they wanted to do with my hair style.
03:31 And Paul LeBlanc, which was an amazing hairdresser,
03:34 saw a picture that the Coen brothers brought to him
03:37 about a guy in a brothel in Texas in the '60s
03:41 that was having this haircut.
03:43 Paul did like, (imitates cutting)
03:44 and in a second I had this thing on my head
03:46 and I went like, "Shit, okay.
03:48 "I have to live with this for the next three months."
03:50 It was a fantastic idea because it's very clean
03:53 and methodical and mathematical.
03:55 Like, everything has to be perfect.
03:58 That's the way he wanted things to be.
04:00 Watched "Skyfall" again last night.
04:02 Anyone else think that Javier Bardem
04:03 will be a great Joker?
04:05 It's a great role, but it's been so well accomplished
04:09 by so many great actors that I don't want
04:11 to put my feet on that ground.
04:13 Jack Nicholson, Arthur Ledger, J-Lethal,
04:16 and Joaquin Phoenix.
04:17 Come on, enough.
04:18 I wonder if he considered a rugby career before acting.
04:21 No, I didn't because now rugby's professional sport,
04:25 but when I was playing, it was amateur.
04:28 I quit playing because it happened that my first movie,
04:32 "Jamon, Jamon," and the second one was coming out
04:34 while I was playing, and you could see
04:36 that most of the players of the other team
04:39 didn't care much about the ball, much more about my nose.
04:42 Like, okay, here's a movie star.
04:44 We're gonna take care of him.
04:46 And I said, okay, it's time for me to quit.
04:48 [laughs]
04:49 Fun fact, Javier got drunk the night
04:51 before he had scenes the next day.
04:53 He did it so his character would be even more off
04:56 and irritable with a slightly haggard look during shooting.
05:00 No, that's not true.
05:02 No, no, no, that was just me without coffee.
05:06 I had a great time with Josh, that's for sure.
05:08 This was my first movie with an American production,
05:12 American crew, and I felt kind of isolated a little bit.
05:16 It was the first time that I would leave home
05:18 and be outside of Spain, my comfort zone.
05:21 And Josh took so good care of me,
05:24 and he was so adorable, and he really made me feel welcome
05:29 and protected, and since then, I adore him,
05:33 and I think he's beyond the great actor he is.
05:36 He's a fun man to be with.
05:38 He's so smart and so clever and so fun.
05:41 Javier looks like a fantastic villain.
05:44 He has the right atmosphere about him to be terrifying,
05:46 and you can tell he's having a fun time.
05:48 Yes, well, in "Pirates of the Caribbean,"
05:50 I have a great fun.
05:51 That role in a movie like that is about that.
05:54 It's about having fun and going off the limits.
05:56 We live in this fantastic world where pirates, ghosts,
05:59 try to hunt Jack Sparrow.
06:01 They are definitely related, right?
06:04 I know, I get that a lot.
06:06 Jeffrey Dean Morgan, what a great actor.
06:08 He's way more handsome than I am.
06:10 I'm always very pleased that they say that we look alike
06:13 because I think he's very handsome.
06:15 I don't think he's getting the best part
06:17 of that comparison, and we haven't met yet.
06:20 I'm waiting for the day that we both will meet
06:22 and say, "Hey, hey, brother, how you doing?"
06:25 He apparently worked as a stripper
06:27 from one day early in his career.
06:29 I need more details.
06:30 I'm gonna give you the details.
06:31 It was very funny.
06:32 I step out of a cake for a girlfriend of someone.
06:36 I was 19, 20, and then we went to a disco to celebrate,
06:41 and then I did it again there without cake this time,
06:46 and they hired me.
06:47 And since I was kind of having a good time,
06:49 I'm kind of drunk, I said, "Yeah, I'll do it."
06:51 When I woke up the day after,
06:52 I realized I have to show up on a Saturday night
06:55 to do it in front of people, and I did.
06:58 But I took my mother and my sister with me.
07:00 (laughs)
07:02 So I will feel less alone, and I did it for one day,
07:05 and then I left because it was like,
07:07 "Shit, this is not my thing."
07:08 (laughs)
07:09 He's been in so many great movies,
07:11 I wonder if he's taking home any props from set.
07:13 No, really, I'm not very much into collecting anything.
07:17 No, I have the teeth from "Skyfall."
07:20 They were cool, but I'm not good at collecting anything.
07:22 I feel like I go there, I do it, and I leave,
07:26 and it stays there rather than bringing it with me.
07:29 Dune's musical score still gives me chills.
07:32 Yeah, wait until you hear "Dune Part II" musical score,
07:37 which has some elements and tunes from the first one,
07:40 but it's a different world, and it's crazy good.
07:44 It's absolutely mesmerizing.
07:46 Okay, so I've heard what internet has to say,
07:49 only the good parts.
07:50 Thank you very much.
07:51 I responded what I could, and thanks for watching.
